- 3:15Speaker 2: this is amazing.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Hold on, let me just take two seconds just to

- 3:58Speaker 3: world greatest.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Just keeps flowing.
- 4:00Speaker 3: But first, be first, before we bring out the great
- 4:03Speaker 3: Irvin Magic Johnson. We gotta make a motion picture out
- 4:06Speaker 3: of this. Of course, you know we have an intro,
- 4:08Speaker 3: but we gotta really state to state. We gotta set
- 4:10Speaker 3: the stage. So let's let's do it. Let's do it,
- 4:13Speaker 3: please av team. Let's let's get it going.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Man has a smile that lights up a television screen
- 4:21Speaker 5: from here.
- 4:22Speaker 2: The bangor made on my Irvin Magic Johnson.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Back then, I was dreaming that I was playing the
- 4:27Speaker 6: NBA and that that would be a businessman.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So we got a reach back and give back. So
- 4:40Speaker 2: those are less fortunate. Can we do that, my Irvin
- 4:45Speaker 2: Magic Johnson. I'm in the prizing.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I keep the ghetto like the hood before an a
- 4:49Speaker 1: gentry five.
- 4:50Speaker 5: So when I can't die, Nat gottamental just what I thought.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I've got a twelve guys. When I first started, nobody
- 4:59Speaker 2: thought about urban America. Didn't think they could make money,
- 5:02Speaker 2: but now they know they do.
- 5:03Speaker 6: I know there worth the number one group of people
- 5:05Speaker 6: going to the movies at that time, but we didn't
- 5:07Speaker 6: have no theater.
- 5:07Speaker 2: We built six and zeros across the country's top ten
- 5:10Speaker 2: highest grossal theaters of the nation.
- 5:12Speaker 7: In nineteen nine, game Mate Johnson became the first person
- 5:14Speaker 7: to reach a franchise agreement with the Clock each ot and.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Went from building three to a building one hundred and
- 5:19Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The Multi Bowl was already negotiated, aid a record price
- 5:23Speaker 3: for the Dodge over two billion dollars.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Our TV deal just came out at eight hild and
- 5:28Speaker 5: they say, oh, they're the smartest guys.
- 5:30Speaker 6: We want to bring that doctor pride back to our fans,
- 5:33Speaker 6: to our players, to the Los Angeles to me.
- 5:36Speaker 5: I've got time to myself.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I want to You're a billionaire here building there. I'm
- 5:42Speaker 2: going with him.
- 5:43Speaker 6: I have over delivered to my customer base for thirty years.
- 5:49Speaker 2: He got the magic. And when I was at this
- 5:53Speaker 2: level and I could deal with you. But I'm not
- 5:56Speaker 2: at that level no more.
- 5:57Speaker 6: See I went here, then I went here, Now I'm here,
- 6:00Speaker 6: So the deals got to be here.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, buddy, get on your feet.
- 6:09Speaker 8: Make some noise.
- 6:10Speaker 2: That was Isaac Johnson.
- 6:12Speaker 8: Let's go time.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Oh how does this feel? You played in front of
- 6:46Speaker 3: twenty thousand people? How does this feel to see this
- 6:49Speaker 3: for financial literacy?
- 6:50Speaker 2: The hell you speak?
- 6:51Speaker 5: This is amazing what both of you brothers have built.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Because we need education and we need to learn how
- 6:59Speaker 5: to work with each other because once we get the
- 7:02Speaker 5: financial literacy, the.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Education of money.
- 7:06Speaker 5: We already got the work ethic, we already got the knowledge.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And everybody out here is hungry. But you too are
- 7:12Speaker 2: the key here.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Let's give it up for both of them, because we
- 7:15Speaker 5: wouldn't be here without that. And let me just say,
- 7:21Speaker 5: God is so good and all the time.
- 7:26Speaker 2: All right, let's go. Then emailed it. He didn't. That
- 7:31Speaker 2: wasn't plan. You know, that was not we didn't prob that. Look,
- 7:34Speaker 2: I promise you that wasn't no disrespect. But he'd been
- 7:40Speaker 2: to a few cookouts.
- 7:42Speaker 3: All right, everybody, take your seats. Take your seats, please,
- 7:44Speaker 3: please please, Oh man, they said, call for the ice off.
- 7:50Speaker 3: This ain't nothing but God, brother, it's nothing but indible.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's incredible. Yes, yes, wow.
- 7:57Speaker 5: And it can only happen in Atlanta too. You gotta
- 8:00Speaker 5: do it in tl It only happened in atl.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Only in Atlanta, only in Atlanta. All right, all right,
- 8:07Speaker 3: ladies and gentlemen. So yeah, let's try to clear the
- 8:08Speaker 3: ours if we can.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So magic. I want to start right off.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You're one of the most successful entrepreneurs, our coach, are
- 8:16Speaker 3: one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. But
- 8:18Speaker 3: everybody has mistakes and failures, right, So my first question is,
- 8:22Speaker 3: what's one financial mistake you made in business that you
- 8:27Speaker 3: learned from or might have been painful.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Well, along my journey and along all of our journeys,
- 8:34Speaker 5: we're all going to make a mistake, and we might
- 8:37Speaker 5: make two mistakes, right. But my first mistake was when
- 8:41Speaker 5: I was actually nineteen years old.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I had just won the.
- 8:46Speaker 5: National championship and I beat that dude named Bird.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I don't know, I heard of them, And.
- 8:53Speaker 5: So all the shoe companies came to recruit me to
- 8:57Speaker 5: sign with them. And this is why this conference is
- 9:02Speaker 5: so important, because conference offered me the most money.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And so when you black and you broke, you take.
- 9:09Speaker 5: The most money, right, And so I decided to go
- 9:13Speaker 5: at Converse.
- 9:14Speaker 2: But Phil Knight came in.
- 9:17Speaker 5: And he said, I can't offer you the same amount
- 9:20Speaker 5: of money as Converse, but I can give you something
- 9:24Speaker 5: called stock. And I passed on the stock, not knowing
- 9:33Speaker 5: anything about stock at nineteen years old. You know how
- 9:37Speaker 5: much money forty six years later that stock would be
- 9:43Speaker 5: worth today? A billion five ooh, So I wish I
- 9:49Speaker 5: was this herban fact when I was nineteen years old.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But let me just say to all of us, make
- 9:57Speaker 2: sure we.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Educate ourselves about with you about stock.
- 10:01Speaker 2: You know, we want to own and so I.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Didn't know anything about it, but God put me in
- 10:08Speaker 5: a position to make up for it, right I'm doing Okay?
- 10:12Speaker 3: Well, I mean, let me just follow up all that,
- 10:15Speaker 3: because that story is a crazy story. When did you realize,
- 10:19Speaker 3: oh man, I might have messed up a little bit? Like,
- 10:21Speaker 3: did somebody educate you, like, yo, this this is equity,
- 10:24Speaker 3: this is stocks, Like, at what point in your journey
- 10:26Speaker 3: did you realize?
- 10:27Speaker 5: Okay, I realized I messed up when Michael Jordans came
- 10:30Speaker 5: out with Air Jordan.
- 10:31Speaker 2: That's when I knows.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I could have owned some of that, right, So I
- 10:40Speaker 5: messed up big time. And but you know that that's
- 10:46Speaker 5: what happens you're not educated, and so now I educate
- 10:51Speaker 5: myself about everything. And that was a huge mistake on
- 10:55Speaker 5: my part. But also my family didn't know money. See
- 10:59Speaker 5: a lot of times you're going to be the first
- 11:02Speaker 5: generation of wealth and knowing money in your family, and
- 11:06Speaker 5: so it's important that you're successful so that your siblings
- 11:12Speaker 5: or people in your family or friends can follow your lead.
- 11:16Speaker 5: And that happened to me now that I'm successful, others
- 11:20Speaker 5: in my family are successful as well.
- 11:22Speaker 2: He trail blaze.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Everybody knows, like we grew up in the eighties, obviously
- 11:27Speaker 1: watched your Hall of Fame career, and everybody just knew
- 11:30Speaker 1: that magic smile.
- 11:32Speaker 2: He's the nicest guy in the world.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And then you hear people who've played with you and
- 11:37Speaker 1: they said, he's the most competitive person I've ever met
- 11:40Speaker 1: in life. So I wonder, how did you transition or
- 11:44Speaker 1: did you have to transition when going into the business field.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Were you just as competitive it's not even more?
- 11:50Speaker 5: Oh, I'm competitive right now. I don't want to lose
- 11:53Speaker 5: at anything. And you take that same competitive drive that
- 11:58Speaker 5: you had on the basketball court and you put it
- 12:01Speaker 5: in business. Listen, I go to bed at eight o'clock,
- 12:04Speaker 5: I'm up at four o'clock. I work out for two hours,
- 12:07Speaker 5: and then I'm in the office all day. I'm driven.
- 12:11Speaker 5: I'm driven, and I'm driven. I don't need nobody to
- 12:14Speaker 5: pat me on the back or anything. I'm self motivated.
- 12:18Speaker 5: So that plays in my favor. Right, and so everything
- 12:24Speaker 5: that I learned as a basketball player I've taken into business.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I'm a disciplined man, right, I do all the.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Research because I had to research my opponents back in
- 12:36Speaker 5: the day.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Now I research.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Companies and businesses, and so I'm also when you think
- 12:43Speaker 5: about I'm a perfectionist. I like to do everything the
- 12:47Speaker 5: right way. And that's the key for all of us
- 12:50Speaker 5: out here. The way you're gonna grow your brand and
- 12:53Speaker 5: keep your brand. You gotta be particular about what you
- 12:58Speaker 5: let come in right and what you put out there
- 13:02Speaker 5: on social media and all that because that goes.
- 13:04Speaker 2: To your brand earners. What's up?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Look, this episode is brought to you by Square Banking.
- 13:10Speaker 1: One of the things we love most is seeing neighborhood
- 13:13Speaker 1: businesses level up. This iss West Indian spired writing our
- 13:16Speaker 1: community that started with a small takeout counter. Now with
- 13:19Speaker 1: Square they've been able to expand into a full sit
- 13:22Speaker 1: down restaurant and even started catering events across the city.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's the kind of growth that inspires us, and it's
- 13:29Speaker 1: powered by Square. Square is built for all types of businesses,
- 13:33Speaker 1: from the corner bagel shop that turned into a local chain,
- 13:36Speaker 1: to the specialty market with thousands of unique items, to

- 13:43Speaker 1: Square Banking, growth gets easier you've got more control over

- 14:18Speaker 1: with Square loans report growth. So go to Square dot com,
- 14:22Speaker 1: slash go, slash ey l to learn more about how
- 14:25Speaker 1: your business can grow with Square. That's s q U
- 14:29Speaker 1: a r e dot com, slash g O, slash e
- 14:34Speaker 1: y L.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Block Inc. Is not a bank.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Banking services provided by Square Financial Services Inc. And Cutting
- 14:40Speaker 1: Bank members. FDIC loans are subject to credit approval. So
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'm very very particular about.
- 14:49Speaker 5: The companies I get involved in as well as what
- 14:52Speaker 5: I send out on social media, because I don't want
- 14:55Speaker 5: nothing to hurt my brand or dilute my brand.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It's interesting if I just asked follow up when you
- 15:01Speaker 1: were playing, it was obvious the competition was there. Was
- 15:03Speaker 1: this guy in Chicago, and there was this guy in Boston.
- 15:07Speaker 1: In business, how do you look at it? Are you
- 15:09Speaker 1: looking at companies, are you looking at other entrepreneurs or
- 15:12Speaker 1: maybe some of your contemporaries who used to play sports
- 15:15Speaker 1: as not competitors, but hey, they sent a benchmark we
- 15:19Speaker 1: got to go hire.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Now, I think when we get to this level, you
- 15:23Speaker 5: cheer for Michael Jordan and his business. You cheer for
- 15:27Speaker 5: Robert Smith, you cheer for any brother who or sister
- 15:30Speaker 5: who is doing very very well. See, I'm not no hater.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I cheer for them, and then I also try to
- 15:36Speaker 5: learn from them. If they got something that will helped
- 15:39Speaker 5: me be successful, I'm gonna steal it, take it and
- 15:42Speaker 5: grab it right and put it into my business. So
- 15:46Speaker 5: what we need to do is, really, I saw Bob
- 15:49Speaker 5: Johnson change the landscape, right, and so when I saw
- 15:53Speaker 5: Bob do bet, that really inspired me to really say,
- 15:58Speaker 5: I want to be like Bob Johns. But at the
- 16:01Speaker 5: same time I said it, I also want to go
- 16:03Speaker 5: past Bob Johnson.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Right in my own mind, I was saying that, right, And.
- 16:08Speaker 5: So I always look at success of black people and say, wow,
- 16:14Speaker 5: that's wonderful and also how did they get there?
- 16:19Speaker 2: What road did they take?
- 16:21Speaker 5: And if I can learn from them, whether that from
- 16:25Speaker 5: their success or their mistakes, I'm going to get up
- 16:28Speaker 5: under them to try to do just that.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Crap it up for that for sure. Ain't no hater.
- 16:37Speaker 3: So I mean, you've told the story about Starbucks. But
- 16:41Speaker 3: my whole thing is how do you go from opening
- 16:43Speaker 3: one business to having several hundred different type of businesses
- 16:48Speaker 3: scaling without losing quality.
- 16:51Speaker 5: What the hardest thing to do is a scale of business, right,
- 16:54Speaker 5: because you may have enough money to start that first business, right,
- 17:01Speaker 5: But the hardest thing is, now am I in a
- 17:04Speaker 5: financial situation where I can build the second one? So
- 17:08Speaker 5: what I did was Starbucks. I let the first one
- 17:11Speaker 5: build the second one. I didn't take any money from
- 17:14Speaker 5: the profits we made. Then I let the second one
- 17:16Speaker 5: build the third one, and fourth one, and on and
- 17:19Speaker 5: on and on. I didn't take no money out until
- 17:21Speaker 5: we build fifty stores.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And so why is that important?
- 17:27Speaker 5: Because it was important to scale the business.
- 17:31Speaker 2: But also put myself in a position where I could.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Sell those stores back to Starbucks and Howard Schultz. We
- 17:40Speaker 5: built one hundred and twenty five Starbucks, and now I
- 17:43Speaker 5: was able to sell all of them back. That was
- 17:45Speaker 5: my excess strategy. And make sure you always have an
- 17:48Speaker 5: extra strategy. You might not decide to sell, but at
- 17:53Speaker 5: least you got the strategy in place, so if you
- 17:56Speaker 5: do decide to sell.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You're ready to do just that. That's important right to me.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It speaks about being mentally prepared. Right, so I know,
- 18:05Speaker 1: as your before you.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Go into that next one, let be given this, I
- 18:09Speaker 5: go for it. And then also two, don't sell too early.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I'm gonna say that one more time. Don't sell too
- 18:20Speaker 5: early because a lot of time they gonna come with
- 18:25Speaker 5: this check and know you might be in a position
- 18:29Speaker 5: and they know you won't take You're gonna take that check,
- 18:33Speaker 5: and then they turn around say you sell it for
- 18:35Speaker 5: five or ten million, But then three or four years
- 18:38Speaker 5: later that guy sells it for two hundred million. So
- 18:42Speaker 5: make sure you understand that sometimes you can still hold
- 18:46Speaker 5: on to the business and help it grow so that
- 18:51Speaker 5: you can sell it for the two hundred million instead
- 18:54Speaker 5: of somebody else. So make sure you understand that timing
- 18:58Speaker 5: is everything.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:59Speaker 5: So I had to stand up and tell him that
- 19:01Speaker 5: because so many of our brothers and sisters sold their
- 19:04Speaker 5: business too early. Absolutely, And I'm gonna give you an
- 19:08Speaker 5: example of that. I know Ryan is here, young brother
- 19:14Speaker 5: stand on a Ryan.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 5: So this young brother we had, he was in Stanford
- 19:22Speaker 5: NBA program, but we recruited him to join our company.
- 19:27Speaker 5: But he negotiated the w NBA Sparks deal that we
- 19:32Speaker 5: had and thank you for that too, that we entrusted
- 19:37Speaker 5: this deal in this young brother's hand. Now we've owned
- 19:42Speaker 5: this the Sparks for a few years. We haven't made
- 19:47Speaker 5: a dime, right, It's been a tough going for the
- 19:52Speaker 5: w NBA. Except now, hold on. There was a time
- 19:59Speaker 5: when we said, shall we sell this? And we kept
- 20:03Speaker 5: saying no, let's hold on to it. Now a group
- 20:07Speaker 5: out of Boston just bought the Connecticut Sun for three
- 20:12Speaker 5: hundred and twenty five million.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Oh thank god. We didn't sell too.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Early, right, right, right, because now we only paid ten
- 20:25Speaker 5: million dollars for the franchise. So when you think about
- 20:29Speaker 5: that return we're gonna have, it's amazing.
- 20:31Speaker 9: So don't sell too early. Okay, I just wanted to
- 20:34Speaker 9: point that out, Troy. I can just follow up real
- 20:38Speaker 9: quick because it's right on path. I'll just follow up
- 20:40Speaker 9: real quick because my next question is right on the
- 20:42Speaker 9: path of what you said. My next question was going
- 20:45Speaker 9: to be why did you liquidate? So you you just
- 20:47Speaker 9: explained that that you that you liquidated just Starbucks.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Can you walk us.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Through why you liquidated, the deal of liquidation, and what
- 20:58Speaker 3: you did with the money after you liquidated.
- 21:00Speaker 2: That's a great question. Should should I? Should I stay?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Should we stay? I'm gonna just let's sit here. I'm
- 21:14Speaker 2: gonna I'm gonna just do it like this. I'm never
- 21:19Speaker 2: gonna change. So listen.
- 21:23Speaker 5: So when we built that hundred, we had a deal
- 21:25Speaker 5: to build one hundred and twenty five Starbucks, and we
- 21:29Speaker 5: did that in five six years. We were making so
- 21:34Speaker 5: much money that Howard came in and said, well, first
- 21:38Speaker 5: of all, let me take you back. They said it
- 21:41Speaker 5: could never happen. Starbucks wouldn't last in the black community.
- 21:46Speaker 5: H We proved them wrong, right, proved them wrong. We
- 21:56Speaker 5: had to make some changes to make sure that Starbucks
- 22:00Speaker 5: was successful in our community.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So we don't eat scone, So we.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Had to take the scones out of my Starbucks. Sweet
- 22:16Speaker 5: potato pie peace Cobb Loska.
- 22:18Speaker 2: To me, kay.
- 22:21Speaker 5: So when you walked into my Starbucks, the field was different.
- 22:25Speaker 5: The desserts were different, and definitely the music was different.
- 22:31Speaker 5: So I customized it.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Oh this is important. Now get with me right here.
- 22:40Speaker 5: I customize it to my customer.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Oh, very very important.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I never made it about me where black folks fell is.
- 22:55Speaker 5: You make it sometimes about you and your likes, Oh,
- 23:02Speaker 5: not about what the customer like. So remember, always make
- 23:07Speaker 5: your business about the customer, and then you will get
- 23:13Speaker 5: the returns that you're looking for.
- 23:16Speaker 2: So I knew it was time. Howard Shows came to me.
- 23:19Speaker 5: And said, listen, we don't have to wait these next
- 23:23Speaker 5: four years. We're making a lot of money. The multi
- 23:27Speaker 5: balls already in the contract. So I start timing times
- 23:33Speaker 5: that revenue. Who shoot, I'm good, VICKI. That's my financial person, VICKI.
- 23:41Speaker 5: I go to Vicky for finance. I said, oh, I'm good.
- 23:45Speaker 5: So I said, yeah, it's time for me to sell.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And sure enough I sold Starbucks. And who would have
- 23:52Speaker 5: ever thought that the Dodgers would be for sale? So
- 23:57Speaker 5: I used the money that came back to me from
- 23:59Speaker 5: this our books sell and put it into the Dodger deal.
- 24:05Speaker 2: No stop, stop, stop, stop stop. Why did I do that?
- 24:09Speaker 5: First of all, there was no people of color being
- 24:12Speaker 5: owner in Major League baseball. That's one reason. The second
- 24:18Speaker 5: reason is I'm buying the Dodgers. The Dodgers got the
- 24:26Speaker 5: biggest brand it's in baseball, them and the Yankees, those
- 24:29Speaker 5: were the two biggest brands. So I knew it was
- 24:32Speaker 5: gonna be a home run. And now I'm gonna give
- 24:34Speaker 5: you the numbers. When we bought it two point two
- 24:37Speaker 5: billion twelve years ago, the highest anybody had ever paid
- 24:43Speaker 5: for a North America sports team. Forbes just came out
- 24:48Speaker 5: with the list with value that seven point five billion.
- 24:53Speaker 5: So again, understand what you're buying when you buy something, right,
- 25:00Speaker 5: that brand is so important. I knew we would hear
- 25:03Speaker 5: the home run, and sure enough we were able to
- 25:07Speaker 5: do that.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I'm not sure should should we? I know, I know
- 25:09Speaker 2: going back, I don't all right, I'm gonna go back.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna leap.
- 25:12Speaker 5: I just can't sit down when I'm trying to go
- 25:14Speaker 5: with my people.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I just thought you was gonna go behind the back path. Yeah, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 2: I was ready. I'm in pocket. I was weighing. I
- 25:21Speaker 2: had my hands ready for the past. Since man ain't
- 25:23Speaker 2: not no, I know, I know, so, I mean, I'm
- 25:25Speaker 2: just a little slower now at sixty six years old.
- 25:28Speaker 2: We saw the jump shot too on the on the Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 2: we'll get to that.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Well, you talked about a lot there, but one of
- 25:34Speaker 1: the things that was missing and gets you missing we
- 25:36Speaker 1: kind of talked about the backstage is Yes, ownership is
- 25:40Speaker 1: important from a financial side, also from a representation side.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Talk about the importance of that, because in order to
- 25:47Speaker 1: see something right, in order to be something, we have
- 25:49Speaker 1: to see at first. So talk about the representation. Because
- 25:51Speaker 1: there was a generation where we watched it, we don't
- 25:54Speaker 1: know how.
- 25:54Speaker 2: They did it. You're doing it a lot different.
- 25:56Speaker 1: We've watched you play, We've watched you make these business moves.
- 25:59Speaker 1: We've watched you put stores in locations that people wouldn't.
- 26:02Speaker 1: We've watched you become successful. You've left clues for us.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Talk about the representation park, Well, i'm gonna talk about you. Well,
- 26:14Speaker 1: we got to remember something. It's not just about the money.
- 26:19Speaker 1: It's about having a seat at the table.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Oh wait a minute, I didn't hear. Nobody wasn't.
- 26:29Speaker 5: What is our biggest challenge is that we don't.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Have a seat at the table.
- 26:37Speaker 5: So when you become successful, you're able to now have
- 26:41Speaker 5: a seat at that table, and then you can help
- 26:45Speaker 5: the city change. They include you on decisions that happen
- 26:50Speaker 5: in the city or in different areas of the city
- 26:55Speaker 5: that you live in.
- 26:57Speaker 2: So it's like the power and so that's what it's
- 27:04Speaker 2: all about.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Yes we can it's a lot of people can make money,
- 27:08Speaker 5: but we need to be represented. That's what you two
- 27:12Speaker 5: brothers are doing right now, giving all of us a chance.
- 27:17Speaker 5: You're representing the culture of these young people.
- 27:20Speaker 2: They see you and they see what you built.
- 27:25Speaker 5: This is amazing and this is just what we needed,
- 27:30Speaker 5: right and so now hold on one second, you're driving
- 27:36Speaker 5: twenty thousand people. The mayor got to come see you.
- 27:40Speaker 5: What wait a minute, two black men driving twenty thousand
- 27:44Speaker 5: here in the city. Oh, I got to have a
- 27:48Speaker 5: meeting with them too. And then it just continues on. So, yes,
- 27:53Speaker 5: we want to be successful, but also we want to
- 27:55Speaker 5: have a seat at the table to be able to hope,
- 28:00Speaker 5: be change agents on what's happening in our community, but
- 28:04Speaker 5: also what's happening in the city too as well.
- 28:06Speaker 2: So that's what it's all about.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So you've invested in everything for movie theaters, Starbucks, the Dodgers.
- 28:18Speaker 3: What is your fourth Obviously you have a great vision.
- 28:21Speaker 3: What is your foresight to know something is going to
- 28:24Speaker 3: be profitable ten years, twenty years, a good investment to
- 28:29Speaker 3: put your money in.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Well, I think, first of all, I was ready to town.
- 28:40Speaker 2: First of all, you.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Got to research the industry or the sector. So when
- 28:45Speaker 5: you research the sector or the industry that you're investing in,
- 28:50Speaker 5: you can see if it's been growing.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Right, So we'll go back probably five or.
- 28:54Speaker 5: Ten years to see if that sector that I'm going
- 28:58Speaker 5: to invest in has been growing. And if I see growth,
- 29:02Speaker 5: then I said, Okay, look like it's gonna be a good.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Investment for me.
- 29:09Speaker 5: But then we have an investment team of people try
- 29:11Speaker 5: to break out down the investment, making sure it is
- 29:15Speaker 5: the right move for us to make both financially and
- 29:19Speaker 5: align it with our brand. Right because anything that you
- 29:23Speaker 5: bring in you gotta align it with your brand. So
- 29:26Speaker 5: it's very important. So right now we have contracts select
- 29:31Speaker 5: so Magic Charles Johnson is doing a wonderful job.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Child's where are you?
- 29:37Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, Chiles, Brother Robbie is with them down us
- 29:41Speaker 5: here yep. So when we think about we have more
- 29:45Speaker 5: house contract Federal Reserve, we have contracts at the airport,
- 29:49Speaker 5: we do delta, the headquarters on and on and on.
- 29:53Speaker 2: We knew that industry was.
- 29:54Speaker 5: Gonna grow because people gotta eat right, and so we
- 29:58Speaker 5: understand that and has been grown. We're over a billion
- 30:01Speaker 5: dollars in revenue now with this small company.
- 30:06Speaker 2: That's just shot. You said a billion dollars of revenue
- 30:09Speaker 2: and two people clap Can we clap it up? That's
- 30:11Speaker 2: not an everyday thing.
- 30:12Speaker 5: No. Well, the reason that's important is that we started
- 30:20Speaker 5: from the ground on up, and so we wanted the
- 30:25Speaker 5: same thing that happen for all of you.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Take, take your ideal, your strategy, start your company and
- 30:31Speaker 5: build it right and so and scale it. And we
- 30:37Speaker 5: were talking about how to scale. But scaling is so
- 30:40Speaker 5: hard because you got to have the financial resources and
- 30:44Speaker 5: then you got to have the right team in place.
- 30:46Speaker 2: If anything, I can tell you this is.
- 30:49Speaker 5: So important and it's gonna hurt a lot of feelings
- 30:51Speaker 5: in this in this audience.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Please do not hire your family.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Oh oh oh oh unless they have the expertise. Whoa
- 31:08Speaker 5: whoa whoa woa, unless they have the expertise. One has
- 31:12Speaker 5: made more black businesses fail in America. Uh oh, because
- 31:19Speaker 5: you hired your family member and they didn't have the
- 31:22Speaker 5: expertise or they thought they could show up instead of
- 31:25Speaker 5: nine o'clock. They showed up at twelve o'clock. I paid
- 31:30Speaker 5: mine to stay away. Here you go to check or
- 31:32Speaker 5: be on the way. No, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidd.
- 31:34Speaker 5: I'm just kid. I'm just kidding. Make sure, though, if
- 31:39Speaker 5: you're gonna be in a family business, make sure he
- 31:41Speaker 5: spell out roles and once everybody know their role, make
- 31:46Speaker 5: sure that they over deliver in that role. So so important.
- 31:54Speaker 5: I'm gonna stay I learned my lesson.
- 31:57Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna give me a game. I was waining.
- 31:59Speaker 1: But you brought up a billion dollars in revenue, and
- 32:02Speaker 1: so that that word stuck in my head.
- 32:04Speaker 2: We have a common theme here at Investment US.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Every year we've been able to bring a billionaire to
- 32:10Speaker 1: the stage.
- 32:11Speaker 2: I love that thing. I love that fae. I love
- 32:15Speaker 2: that fame. Now the billionaires that we brought looked like us.
- 32:21Speaker 2: That's what There you go, there you go.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Twenty twenty five list comes out Hervy Magic Johnson a billionaire.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Well, oh yeah, stand only your feet for.
- 32:40Speaker 8: That, right.
- 32:46Speaker 2: I wonder.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The kid that's walking on the campus in east Landson, Michigan.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Your white to the man who's standing here today? Was
- 32:58Speaker 1: that on the vision board? And what was that moment
- 33:01Speaker 1: like when it? I mean for us in our minds,
- 33:03Speaker 1: we already thought you were there, But now that it's
- 33:05Speaker 1: been reported, what was this moment like for you?
- 33:08Speaker 5: Well, when I first started to know, it wasn't on
- 33:10Speaker 5: the vision board. It was just being successful. See, my
- 33:13Speaker 5: whole business thesis was to be successful for other people
- 33:19Speaker 5: of color could come behind me.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Okay, now remember this.
- 33:27Speaker 5: See when I went to ten nine, ten banks, they
- 33:30Speaker 5: all turned me down. They wanted the picture, they wanted
- 33:33Speaker 5: the autograph, but they didn't want to loan me the money.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Then I went up to Calpurr's this pension fund to
- 33:44Speaker 5: get money because I was gonna start my real estate fund,
- 33:48Speaker 5: and they turned me down three straight years.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Same thing. See, this hasn't been easy.
- 33:54Speaker 5: A lot of you think that, oh he magic Johnson,
- 33:57Speaker 5: so it was easy. No, that actually worked against me.
- 34:01Speaker 5: But I love the challenge. See, I'm not gonna run away.
- 34:06Speaker 5: I knew my business thesis was strong. I knew my people.
- 34:11Speaker 5: I knew what they wanted and what they like, So
- 34:14Speaker 5: all I had to do was deliver it and then
- 34:17Speaker 5: over deliver it to them.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Once I started my business, and so as I.
- 34:22Speaker 5: Became successful, first the Starbucks, the theaters, Magic Johnson theaters,
- 34:27Speaker 5: and then I said, hey, I got to really get
- 34:29Speaker 5: into a bigger business. So I needed somebody else's money
- 34:35Speaker 5: to do that, to grow and have sustainability. So once
- 34:41Speaker 5: the finally the bank said yes, I took that one
- 34:45Speaker 5: hundred million dollars and turned it into what it is today.
- 34:49Speaker 5: But stop, stop, stop, stop stop. Anything I've done is
- 34:53Speaker 5: not just for me. It's so that you can come
- 34:58Speaker 5: behind me. Because now they said, oh that black man
- 35:01Speaker 5: was successful, we'll take a chance on another one.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Because if I.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Fail, then they ain't not gonna take a chance on
- 35:09Speaker 5: another one.
- 35:10Speaker 2: So that's what it's about.
- 35:12Speaker 5: So when you build your business, you don't even other
- 35:16Speaker 5: stand and it's not just about you. You're giving another
- 35:21Speaker 5: young person, young lady, young man, a chance and an
- 35:25Speaker 5: opportunity to say wow, if she made it or if
- 35:29Speaker 5: he made it. I think I got a chance too.
- 35:33Speaker 5: So what I always have my theme is I turned
- 35:37Speaker 5: the impossible into possible. That's what it's all about, right,
- 35:43Speaker 5: That's what it's all about. So I'm still on the
- 35:48Speaker 5: basketball court. I just don't have the little hot pants
- 35:50Speaker 5: on no more. I'm wearing suits. But I just want
- 35:56Speaker 5: to win and be successful man, and nobody's gonna outwork me.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Nobody.
- 36:03Speaker 5: I'm a smart guy because I'm smart because I put
- 36:06Speaker 5: smart people around me, and then I pay them.
- 36:09Speaker 2: To do their job. That part. Always remember that.
- 36:15Speaker 5: Hire smart people, pay them to do their job, and
- 36:18Speaker 5: they'll help you become successful.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Clap it up for that.
- 36:26Speaker 3: So some other deals that people may not know you
- 36:30Speaker 3: were involved in that didn't necessarily go your way, but
- 36:33Speaker 3: great learning experiences.
- 36:34Speaker 2: I'm sure twenty four hour fitness is it plan?
- 36:40Speaker 3: No, twenty four hour Fitness TGI Friday, Yi Friday, Can
- 36:43Speaker 3: you tell them about that experience?
- 36:45Speaker 5: Yeah, because some has failed, right, every business is not
- 36:49Speaker 5: going to be successful. We had the number one TGI
- 36:54Speaker 5: Fridays in the West in Los Angeles, and we were
- 36:58Speaker 5: able to really do a fantastic job of over delivering
- 37:02Speaker 5: to the community.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Then I built the second.
- 37:05Speaker 5: One here in Atlanta, and Atlanta supported me like crazy,
- 37:11Speaker 5: but we were not ready for the volume of customers
- 37:15Speaker 5: that came through our door, and we made a lot
- 37:18Speaker 5: of mistakes and we had to close that Friday because
- 37:23Speaker 5: it was on us, not on the people of Atlanta,
- 37:27Speaker 5: and I learned a valuable lesson that we got to
- 37:30Speaker 5: make sure we hire the best and talented people and
- 37:35Speaker 5: they can drive unbelievable customer service. And we did not
- 37:39Speaker 5: deliver that to the people of Atlanta. But the next businesses,
- 37:44Speaker 5: you learn from that one and make sure the next.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Businesses that you do a better job.
- 37:49Speaker 5: And we've been better because of those mistakes we made
- 37:52Speaker 5: back then, so every.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Business has not hit the home run.
- 37:57Speaker 5: And then also too, a lot of businesses I own
- 38:01Speaker 5: hit singles and doubles, and that's okay. If you get
- 38:05Speaker 5: enough singles and doubles, you're gonna make a lot of
- 38:07Speaker 5: money anyway. So I think for me, it's learn from
- 38:12Speaker 5: your lessons, learn lessons from your failure, excuse me, and
- 38:16Speaker 5: then make sure that it doesn't happen again.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Amen. Amen, I'm just making sure. I'm just making sure
- 38:30Speaker 2: I'm taking so well. You thought it was coming out, yeh, yeah, yeah,
- 38:32Speaker 2: yea yeh. I'm just making sure.
- 38:33Speaker 1: So I want to talk about legacy a little bit
- 38:36Speaker 1: because backstage I showed you some of my emails.
- 38:39Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, it's a true story.
- 38:41Speaker 1: I got this email and it said Alicia Johnson, and
- 38:44Speaker 1: I said, who's that I don't I never ordered from there,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and my wife said, don't worry about that.
- 38:50Speaker 2: And then the next.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Week it said Alicia Johnson again, and I said, what
- 38:55Speaker 1: is that? She said, oh, he's just these sunglasses I got.
- 38:58Speaker 2: I don't worry about that.
- 39:00Speaker 1: And then for the next six months, every three days
- 39:02Speaker 1: I get another email from Alicia Johnson. So I said,
- 39:05Speaker 1: I gotta figure this out. Who's this Alicia Johnson? Come
- 39:08Speaker 1: to find out it's a close attachment to you.
- 39:12Speaker 2: It's your daughter.
- 39:13Speaker 1: So I want to talk about legacy and watching your
- 39:16Speaker 1: kids walking their journeys of entrepreneurship obviously Dre and the
- 39:20Speaker 1: EJ doing their things and their respective industries. What's that like,
- 39:24Speaker 1: watching your kids carve their own path and creating Because
- 39:27Speaker 1: I didn't know it was your daughter, it was the
- 39:29Speaker 1: product that sold.
- 39:30Speaker 2: What's that like for you? Well, it's a great moment.
- 39:33Speaker 5: We all want our kids to be more successful than ourselves,
- 39:37Speaker 5: you know, and so for me to be able to
- 39:41Speaker 5: watch my kids be happy, first of all, and also
- 39:47Speaker 5: to look at their dad or their mom and say, hey,
- 39:54Speaker 5: I want to be like them.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Right. So, my daughter she went to Ft and she.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Love sunglasses, She loved the dress, so she said to
- 40:06Speaker 5: me one day after she graduated, said Dad, I want
- 40:10Speaker 5: to start my eyewear line and I want you to
- 40:13Speaker 5: get me the seed money. And I said, okay, where's
- 40:21Speaker 5: a business plan? She said what, I'm your daughter. I said,
- 40:27Speaker 5: m M, you got to have a business plan. So
- 40:30Speaker 5: she went crying to Cookie, Dad don't love me, you know,
- 40:36Speaker 5: And so Cookie said, is that what he said? She
- 40:41Speaker 5: said no, Well what did he say? He said, I
- 40:43Speaker 5: have to have a business plan, so well, go right one.
- 40:47Speaker 5: So she came back two days later with a half
- 40:52Speaker 5: good business plan and I said no. She stormed out
- 40:58Speaker 5: the room again, and I said, you need two things,
- 41:04Speaker 5: you know, the p and ls. Where's the money section
- 41:08Speaker 5: the real business? And so she finally put that in
- 41:13Speaker 5: and I said, okay. So she's been very successful selling
- 41:18Speaker 5: them online. She built a great business for herself. I mean,
- 41:23Speaker 5: I'm you know, I cry every time I think about
- 41:26Speaker 5: it because again she took my trade on working hard.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Nobody's going to outwork her. And then this is what
- 41:34Speaker 5: really touched me about a year ago. We're riding and
- 41:39Speaker 5: she says to me, Dad, thank you for taking me
- 41:43Speaker 5: through getting a business plan. Six of my girlfriends started
- 41:48Speaker 5: their companies at the same time. I started mind and
- 41:52Speaker 5: they all failed, and I said, that's my job as
- 41:56Speaker 5: your father. You hated that I took you through that exercise,
- 42:00Speaker 5: but it has helped you in the long run. So
- 42:03Speaker 5: make sure that you have a solid business plan, everybody,
- 42:07Speaker 5: that's so important, and then adhere to that.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:11Speaker 5: You can always make adjustments, but adhere to your business plan.
- 42:15Speaker 2: And then my son Ej. I love him.
- 42:17Speaker 5: He's fabulous, you know, EJ gonna be EJ. And he's
- 42:20Speaker 5: in entertainment doing a wonderful job. And then my son
- 42:25Speaker 5: Andre works for me. Now it's it's kind of cool
- 42:28Speaker 5: to go into office and see my son side by
- 42:31Speaker 5: side and doing his thing with me. And so it's
- 42:35Speaker 5: been it's been a joy to watch our three kids.
- 42:38Speaker 5: And now we have two grandchildren. So it's a blessing, man,
- 42:41Speaker 5: a real blessing, real blessing.
- 42:47Speaker 2: So I got to talk about mentorship.
- 42:50Speaker 3: You are a rookie, the Lakers, sensational player, and I
- 42:56Speaker 3: believe you kind of isolated.
- 42:57Speaker 2: It was a level of isolation.
- 42:59Speaker 3: In the locker room because you made friends with the
- 43:02Speaker 3: owner of the team, doctor Jerry Buss.
- 43:06Speaker 2: So you would have to bring this up. Go ahead.
- 43:11Speaker 3: So yeah, walk us through not only that relationship, but
- 43:15Speaker 3: he taught you and what made you, at that young
- 43:18Speaker 3: age have the foresight to go against the peer pressure
- 43:23Speaker 3: of the older veterans and put yourself in that position.
- 43:26Speaker 2: That's a great question. Look, I was curious, man.
- 43:28Speaker 5: I knew I wanted to be a businessman, but I
- 43:31Speaker 5: had to get up under somebody who was already doing
- 43:34Speaker 5: it and so he could give me knowledge. So it
- 43:38Speaker 5: happened to be the owner of the Lakers, doctor Jerry Buss, and.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I told him my dream.
- 43:43Speaker 5: After I was done winning championships with him, I wanted to.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Own businesses. And now you heard.
- 43:51Speaker 5: What I said first, right, you didn't miss what I
- 43:54Speaker 5: said first, right after I'm done winning what? Okay, after
- 44:01Speaker 5: I'm done doing what? See, I had to be serious
- 44:07Speaker 5: with that basketball first, and once I did what I
- 44:11Speaker 5: was able to do on that court in the summertime,
- 44:16Speaker 5: I would then go and spend a lot of time
- 44:19Speaker 5: with him for he can teach me. But I knew
- 44:22Speaker 5: that it wouldn't have worked out if I wasn't successful
- 44:25Speaker 5: on the basketball court. So I handled that business, got
- 44:28Speaker 5: up under him. So three years in, next thing, I know,
- 44:35Speaker 5: I'm coming into the locker room and the guy said, Irvin,
- 44:40Speaker 5: we got to talk to you.
- 44:42Speaker 2: I said, okay, what's going on. I thought we were gonna.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Talk about Larry Bird and the Celtics or something, how
- 44:46Speaker 5: we're gonna defend him or something. They said, no, you
- 44:51Speaker 5: can't be hanging around the owner.
- 44:53Speaker 2: No more.
- 44:55Speaker 5: It's an unwritten rule that players can't hang out with
- 44:58Speaker 5: the owner. All the guys now they head like, yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 5: So I took my time because I'm never gonna react first,
- 45:08Speaker 5: I said, what can I say? I said, Okay, you
- 45:12Speaker 5: guys are millionaires. Here a billionaire. I'm hanging out with
- 45:15Speaker 5: a billionaire because oh stop stop shop, because he's.
- 45:20Speaker 2: The only guy that can help me go where I
- 45:24Speaker 2: want to go. You see.
- 45:27Speaker 5: See, sometimes we forget about that and then don't let
- 45:31Speaker 5: your friend. See don't let them say you can't go.
- 45:45Speaker 5: See a lot of time our friend just because they
- 45:48Speaker 5: want to stay where they are, They.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Want us to stay there too.
- 46:01Speaker 5: If I would have listened to them, I wouldn't be
- 46:03Speaker 5: on this stage today.
- 46:05Speaker 2: See. So I stayed with that man.
- 46:09Speaker 5: He taught me so much and that's why I'm successful.
- 46:14Speaker 2: What did I do?
- 46:15Speaker 5: I took the knowledge that he gave me and brought
- 46:18Speaker 5: it to the black community right and started building my business.
- 46:22Speaker 5: So gain knowledge, as much knowledge as you can, be
- 46:27Speaker 5: as smart as you can, study as much as you can,
- 46:31Speaker 5: and always whether it's on your phone. I know a
- 46:35Speaker 5: lot of time we don't read the newspaper. I grew
- 46:37Speaker 5: up in the newspaper era, so I still read the newspaper.
- 46:40Speaker 5: You guys, get everything on your phone. Make sure you
- 46:43Speaker 5: just keep up with what's going on, the trends, what's happening,
- 46:47Speaker 5: whether it's that with AI. Now, black folks, we gotta
- 46:50Speaker 5: study AI, so we have to do that, right, So
- 46:55Speaker 5: just keep up on what's going on out here.
- 46:58Speaker 2: It's very important. So again, no, I won't gonna let.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Them all they should be concerned about when I come
- 47:06Speaker 5: down shaking and bacon and I throw that. No, look,
- 47:12Speaker 5: they better be worried about delivering that basket.
- 47:16Speaker 2: That's it.
- 47:18Speaker 5: What I do on that court, that's their concern. What
- 47:21Speaker 5: I do off that court wasn't they concern. Okay, I'm
- 47:24Speaker 5: gonna handle my business on that court.
- 47:29Speaker 1: You handle your business in the boardroom as well. And selfishly,
- 47:32Speaker 1: I talked to you backstage about it. One of the
- 47:34Speaker 1: things I'm most proud of is that there now owner
- 47:37Speaker 1: of the Washington Commanders.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Yes, sir, childhood team of mind.
- 47:45Speaker 1: But having black ownership in the NFL is probably one
- 47:48Speaker 1: of the hardest things to do. Ye talk about that
- 47:51Speaker 1: moment and partnering with Joe Harrison. What was that like
- 47:53Speaker 1: being a part of our ownership group pitching to the
- 47:56Speaker 1: NFL to say we need to change this franchise. Feel
- 48:00Speaker 1: like you've done a great job. I appreciate that.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Man.
- 48:02Speaker 5: Well, first of all, you know, I got every team
- 48:07Speaker 5: almost in terms of in every sport, I got a
- 48:10Speaker 5: team almost right, and so the NFL was the last one.
- 48:15Speaker 5: And I never thought it's gonna happen because I didn't
- 48:19Speaker 5: see us. We see ourselves on the field and we
- 48:23Speaker 5: take care of our business as players on that football field.
- 48:27Speaker 5: We also we seen it in the coaching ranks and
- 48:30Speaker 5: now sometimes even in the executive roles, but we hadn't
- 48:34Speaker 5: seen it in the ownership role. And so once that
- 48:39Speaker 5: happened for me, I was so blessed, not just for me,
- 48:43Speaker 5: but now what they've done in Atlanta, and we should
- 48:46Speaker 5: clap for that because you got.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Black ownership here with the Falcons.
- 48:50Speaker 5: You know, now Denver black ownership, so now we're starting
- 48:57Speaker 5: to see us being those roles as owners. Why that's
- 49:01Speaker 5: important not only for myself, also for the players, right,
- 49:05Speaker 5: they feel better about it as well. So it's been
- 49:08Speaker 5: great for Cookie and Eye to be involved with the
- 49:11Speaker 5: commanders and two in two years, we've turned it around.
- 49:16Speaker 5: We're heading in a positive direction. The fans are back
- 49:20Speaker 5: and always about that quarterback boy. We got a brother
- 49:23Speaker 5: that can, he's a bad boy and Jay Daniels and
- 49:27Speaker 5: so we're excited about him and.
- 49:30Speaker 2: And to do it in d C Man Chocolate City,
- 49:35Speaker 2: the DMV.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Brother Man, it's a it's a beautiful thing. So again
- 49:43Speaker 5: I can't stop working though. Let me tell you guys something. See,
- 49:49Speaker 5: when you get there, it's hard to get there, but
- 49:53Speaker 5: it's even high harder to stay there. M So when
- 50:01Speaker 5: you get there, you just starting.
- 50:06Speaker 2: I know they waiting on me to make a mistake.
- 50:08Speaker 2: I already know that.
- 50:16Speaker 5: So that's why I'm so careful about what I do,
- 50:19Speaker 5: what I put out there on social media, how I
- 50:26Speaker 5: am as a husband or father, now a grandfather.
- 50:32Speaker 2: So it's so important.
- 50:36Speaker 5: Because your business, that sussess can go just like that,
- 50:41Speaker 5: just as fast as you got it.
- 50:42Speaker 2: It can go just that fast.
- 50:45Speaker 5: So make sure that you're making all the right decisions
- 50:49Speaker 5: in the right moves, which is very important.
- 50:53Speaker 2: And so I always think back.
- 50:58Speaker 5: When I when we got the commanders man and cooking
- 51:03Speaker 5: our we were on the plane, I said, baby, I
- 51:08Speaker 5: remember when we had the peanut butter but no jelly.
- 51:13Speaker 2: I remember when.
- 51:14Speaker 5: We had the kool aid but no no sugar.
- 51:19Speaker 2: See, I went.
- 51:19Speaker 5: Back to how I grew up and and I just
- 51:23Speaker 5: sat there on the plane thanking God for putting me
- 51:26Speaker 5: in this position. But stop, stop, stop. But also I
- 51:31Speaker 5: know what to do with it. Oh oh oh oh see.
- 51:38Speaker 5: You gotta know what to do with it when you
- 51:39Speaker 5: get blessed, and make sure you bless others. That's why
- 51:44Speaker 5: I've been blessed, because I blessed others, and that's that's
- 51:49Speaker 5: what's important. So yeah, I'm feeling good, and it's a
- 51:52Speaker 5: great thing to be in the NFL. We gotta keep keep,
- 51:57Speaker 5: Hopefully more minorities will keep being in an ownership role.
- 52:02Speaker 5: And I think what you're doing here today, there's some
- 52:08Speaker 5: future owners. You're gonna have a lot of billionaires out here,
- 52:12Speaker 5: because that's what it's all about, multi multi millionaires. Now,
- 52:25Speaker 5: put yourself there every time I did something. I put
- 52:31Speaker 5: myself there and then I went after it. All right,
- 52:36Speaker 5: write this in your phone right quick? See long now
- 52:44Speaker 5: the days of five ten years, that's over with. Now
- 52:50Speaker 5: everything you should go after should be three years. Okay
- 52:57Speaker 5: in terms of hey, I want to start that business
- 52:59Speaker 5: or I want to coomplisice.
- 53:00Speaker 2: This, give yourself three years.
- 53:04Speaker 5: I want you to then go home, talk to your partner, wife, husband, whoever,
- 53:10Speaker 5: and say, honey, give me three years. I went to
- 53:16Speaker 5: Cookie and said, I need three years to be on
- 53:19Speaker 5: the road. I got to build my business, but it's
- 53:24Speaker 5: our business. Can you handle the kids for three years
- 53:28Speaker 5: without me being there a lot? She said, honey, go
- 53:32Speaker 5: do your thing, and look what happened. You see because
- 53:41Speaker 5: if you get longer than three years, that means you
- 53:45Speaker 5: you haven't put one hundred and fifty percent into building
- 53:48Speaker 5: this business. But you gotta have sign off with your
- 53:52Speaker 5: partner because they have to understand that, hey, date night,
- 53:56Speaker 5: what it used to be might not be there. So
- 54:02Speaker 5: when she or he buys into that, now you good.
- 54:08Speaker 5: So that's very very important. Three I do everything in
- 54:11Speaker 5: three years. I told my wife, I'm gonna have a
- 54:13Speaker 5: plane in three years. Let me do all save up
- 54:16Speaker 5: the money. Let me understand the plane industry. What happened
- 54:22Speaker 5: three years? I got the plane boom. You know, you
- 54:26Speaker 5: just keep going so all the things I want to
- 54:29Speaker 5: do three years. I can't wait to see what happens
- 54:34Speaker 5: to this in three years. Ah, I can't hear you.
- 54:39Speaker 5: Come on now, they are already billionaires. You know why
- 54:53Speaker 5: because they're blessing you with knowledge. See, God gonna bless them,
- 54:57Speaker 5: both of them. Oh, they they on their way because
- 55:05Speaker 5: they blessing you with so much knowledge, so much access.
- 55:12Speaker 2: What a black what the black people need? Access? Man? Man,
- 55:20Speaker 2: I gotta come back.
- 55:22Speaker 5: You don't even have to pay me when I come
- 55:24Speaker 5: back next time, you don't even have to pay me.
- 55:25Speaker 2: I'm coming back older two holder two.
- 55:41Speaker 5: Stop, stay up, stop, stop, stay up now. Thank thank you,
- 55:48Speaker 5: love your back to love your back for real. I
- 55:51Speaker 5: want you to know something and hear this. We were
- 55:54Speaker 5: both taught, all three of us, was talking about this
- 55:59Speaker 5: the last year generation, a couple generations back, all those
- 56:02Speaker 5: successful black men and women took the knowledge to the
- 56:06Speaker 5: grave with them. That hurt our community.
- 56:12Speaker 2: See.
- 56:13Speaker 5: I'm standing here in front of you because I want
- 56:17Speaker 5: you to be successful and always remember it's enough room
- 56:23Speaker 5: for everybody. We forget that, we forget that. Look what happened.
- 56:32Speaker 5: Let me now sit down, Look what happened. Now. I
- 56:36Speaker 5: gotta give you this look Junior Bridgeman before he passed away,
- 56:44Speaker 5: basketball player, billionaire Lebron Michael Jordan. You see, it just
- 56:53Speaker 5: keeps going. It's enough room for everybody.
- 56:57Speaker 2: And when Michael and I see each other, we patty
- 57:00Speaker 2: each other on the back. Man, can you believe it?
- 57:05Speaker 2: Can I beat him?
- 57:06Speaker 5: Now? He got that one on one thing. See, I'm
- 57:10Speaker 5: always gonna be honest with myself.
- 57:14Speaker 2: The only thing I beat.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Michael in is them no little passes and leadership.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Oh talking about it.
- 57:29Speaker 5: It ain't no question, just like it ain't no question
- 57:32Speaker 5: what he.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Gonna do to me, dunks and all that.
- 57:36Speaker 5: But you know that's what makes him a bad boy
- 57:39Speaker 5: and the best that's ever done it.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Don't don't get it twisted. I love Lebron, but mm
- 57:45Speaker 2: hmm no, no, no, no, yeah, we got that documented,
- 57:51Speaker 2: that documented. Okay, I shot you heard that. Hold up?
- 57:54Speaker 2: You know Lebron's I love my boy. I love him.
- 57:58Speaker 2: But when Michael.
- 57:59Speaker 7: Jordan took go on with that Tarlil, hold up, hold up,
- 58:05Speaker 7: hold up, listen, because a lot of you wasn't born then,
- 58:09Speaker 7: nineteen ninety one against my Lakers right hand, we thought
- 58:13Speaker 7: we had him.
- 58:16Speaker 5: He looked as we went down, he switched it to
- 58:22Speaker 5: the left. Here Tom went left, spunning against the glass
- 58:30Speaker 5: and good. There's nobody alive that's been able to do
- 58:34Speaker 5: just that. That boy is too bad, I'm telling you
- 58:37Speaker 5: right now. But Lebron is a bad boy too. He's
- 58:42Speaker 5: a bad boy, but he's not Michael. Appreciate that magic.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Look at it.
- 58:53Speaker 8: Look at that face right there.
- 58:57Speaker 2: Oh my staying on that. I always wanted that.
- 59:00Speaker 3: I ask you this question as a basketball fan, that
- 59:03Speaker 3: Barcelona experience. I mean, we watched documentaries and all that.
- 59:07Speaker 3: What was it like being with the greatest players of
- 59:10Speaker 3: all time, greatest team of all time? What's the story
- 59:13Speaker 3: that maybe nobody knows?
- 59:14Speaker 2: Like, what's that?
- 59:14Speaker 3: What's a great memory from you on that dream team? Okay, well,
- 59:19Speaker 3: let let me first put it in perspective. First. See,
- 59:26Speaker 3: see I learned.
- 59:27Speaker 5: I'm a visual learner, and also I learned what I
- 59:30Speaker 5: read and so on and on.
- 59:32Speaker 2: So we go to Spain. I'm jumping ahead and reason
- 59:37Speaker 2: for that.
- 59:38Speaker 5: So we go to Spain and they're having this big
- 59:42Speaker 5: reception and we're on this yacht. The air conditioning go
- 59:47Speaker 5: out in the yacht, so they had us all go
- 59:50Speaker 5: off the yacht and go back on the bus. Another
- 59:54Speaker 5: yacht pulls up, so we all get on the second yacht.
- 59:58Speaker 5: So we're talking to the guy and I'm talking to
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: the guy, excuse me, and I said, man, that's crazy.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: A second yacht came up. Well, who's yacht that broke down?
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: He said?
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: The guy said, it's my yacht. I said, well, who
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: yacht is this one? He said, this one is mine too.
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: I said that let me know wealth, wealthy rich. It
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: is a whole different thing. And I said, wow, I
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: want to be like him. I tell him this story.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Mickey Erison, or the owner of the Miami heat He
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: changed my life because that let me know that I
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: had a long way to go. And I thank him
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: for talking to me that whole time. So we're Monico
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: and Prince Raynier to us in the Big Castle and
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: we're up there. So we're in Texas. All the guys
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: were over here talking. Prince Rayner and Commissioner Stern was
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: over there. So I get up and I go over.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: I got to meet this dude who run all the
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: money co. See that's who I am. Man, Hey, brother,
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: y'all cool. But this dude here, so I go introduce myself.
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: He said, Oh, Magice, I know who you are. I said,
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: how do you run all of this?
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: You know? Drop some knowledge on me? Man. I stood
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: over there for about thirty.
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: Minutes talking to him about Monico.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: And on and on and on. You know what he did?
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: He called his son and daughter over and introduced me
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: to them. Said, as long as Magic is here, you
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: hang out with Magic. So they took me to the
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: nightclubs and on and on and on.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: But guess what now his son the same one I
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: was hanging out with.
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: It's the Prince of Monico, now right, I said. See,
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: that's why I'm glad. I ran over there and Matt
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: the man. But why am I saying this? Sometimes you
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: gotta step out that group that you in.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Oh oh oh, oh oh oh.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: You keep hanging around the same people, you only gonna
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: get the same results. Oh, get out of your comfort
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: zone when you go to that function and it's somebody.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Over there, go on over there.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Hey, I'm so and so just want to say I
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: admire you, or how did you get to where you
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: are it takes two or three minutes, but sometime we are.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: No, I don't want to bother them or I'm not
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: I'm gonna go over there and get me that knowledge
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: that I'm looking for, and it has.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Paid off for me. So you that elevator speech is real.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: So when you got those three minutes riding up that elevator,
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: take advantage of that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: So the Dream Team was the greatest.
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: Basketball I've ever been involved in. And to be the
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: point guard on that team and represent the NBA and
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: our country, and but just to be able to hang
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: out with Michael and play with him. Finally, Larry Bird
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: and Charles Barkley, the Slimmer was the Slimmers, Child Barklay,
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullen, Clyde Drexer,
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: and I mean it was just amazing. We just job,
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: you know, we just it's the greatest team ever assembled.
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: And so I'm excited to say I was on that team.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: But before we go, you talked about the yachts, you
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: talked about your image on social media.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: We saw you on the treadmill.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I mean, we saw you on the tread mill. We
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: saw you with the basketball court on the yacht. It
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: talks about earning your leisure, which is obviously our name
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: and our brand, but being able to vacation and find
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: balance and find peace with your family. Talk about the
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: importance of that and all this man, because it's chaos,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: but you find tell them.
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: Well, I can't do this without that. You know, I
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: love dating my wife. So when I go on those
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: six weeks, we're able to date.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: And there's like two veried people here. They clubs like
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: that section right there.
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: And so it's a lot of fun.
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: And because you know, when I'm grinding, I'm grinding, so
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: I'm working, So this gives me a chance to be
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: with my family. And then last but not least, when
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: I was traveling is important, right, so you can.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: See the world.
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: And I love traveling, Cookie and I just love it.
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: And so I remember when Denzel see Denzel introduced yachting
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: to me, and I seen that I was able to
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: open it up for a lot of other blacks to
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: now go. And Cookie and I have been yachting now
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: for thirty two years. So it's a blessing to to
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: do it. But at the same time. This is what
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: I want you to take from that. When I was
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: in Montico in nineteen ninety two, we just talked about this.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: I saw the yachts down there, and I told myself,
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: one day, I'm gonna be on one of them.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: See it didn't happen right away because I didn't have
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: enough money. But what did I do? In three years?
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: I say I'm gonna be on that yacht. And what happened?
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: In three years? I was on that yacht. See what
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: you say, you've been yachting for three years, or you
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: will be yachting in three, four or three years. See
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: that's that's that's it. We just listen. We want to
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: open it up for our people to know that traveling
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: is wonderful.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: It's not about the yacht. Whatever you can do.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: I just saw Luda, Chris and Kevin Hurt out there.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: That's great, let's keep doing it. But the main thing
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: is understand that you can do it one day if
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: that's what you want to do. Now, everybody stand up.
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: No phone in your hand. I don't want nothing in
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: your hand. First of all, let's give God some glory
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: because we're here right. I can't hear you come on now, now,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: I've given you some nuggets. These two gentlemen, for the
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: last three days, but also for the last years, have
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: been giving you unbelievable nuggets on your business.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: How to take yourself to the next level. I can't
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: hear you. Come on.
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: God has placed two vessels in your life right.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Here, two kings. And you know what.
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: It hasn't been about them. It's been about.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: You and.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: M h.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: All right, So let's start off with the If somebody
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: gonna be a millionaire in the.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: Next three years, clap two times.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: All right, doc, if you're gonna be a more time.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Millionaire in the next three years, clap. Okay, okay. I'm
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: about to draw this one. I'm about to draw this one.
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: I'm about to draw this one.
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: Billionaires let me here.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: But all right now, just do me a favor.
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: I don't care who next to you, because it's gonna
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: take a village to do this. I wanna grab people
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: hand right quick. Let's go right next to you. Bow
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: your heads because God gonna put that favor on you
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: and it's gonna happen. Oh Heaven and Father, we say
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: thank you, thank you, and thank you. Why are we
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: saying thank you because you woke us up this morning.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: Thank you for these two incredible men who have decided
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: to bless not only themselves in their own families, but
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: all of us in this auditorium.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: You are using them so.
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: That they can bless others and they can be successful
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: right along with all of these incredible people.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Now, I know that you have the power and.
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: The tools to make everybody in this room successful. And
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: if they follow you and keep you on their hearts,
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: they will definitely be successful. So touch everybody, Bless everybody

- 1:10:09Speaker 5: Jesus name, we pray, Amen, God bless you.
