- 0:01Our number 2 welcome back. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 0:03eye with Sports Radio Network. I'm Trent Condon, joined today
- 0:07by Brad Rose, the former AD at Valley.
- 0:11All over the place. Where were you before Valley?
- 0:15I was at Fairfield, Fairfield AD and for that I coached at
- 0:20Ankeny. I was a head baseball coach at
- 0:21Ankeny and then before that at Tumwa.
- 0:24Had some success with the Hawks. Yeah, yeah, we had some really
- 0:27good, good players. I got a little something for you
- 0:29a little later from one of your former players.
- 0:30We're, we're going to get into that a little bit later on.
- 0:32And I think I've made Rosie a little bit nervous.
- 0:35Right now, though, it's time to talk Hawkeyes as we do each and
- 0:38every Friday with Tom Caker from hawkeyereport.com as Tom joins
- 0:42us once again. Tom, as always, appreciate your
- 0:45time over there in the Quad Cities and back home.
- 0:48Now for the Hawkeyes. 2 games, 2 huge games with Purdue and
- 0:52Nebraska on tap after the disappointment of the loss
- 0:55against Maryland. First of all, how are you doing
- 0:57over there, Tom? Doing well and you're right,
- 1:01these next two we're going to be important I think for Iowa
- 1:07regardless of what happened on Wednesday.
- 1:09But I think it adds even more importance because now that NCAA
- 1:15resume, which I didn't think had any, you know, the the resume
- 1:21was interesting because they were winning the games that were
- 1:24supposed to win. Pretty much.
- 1:27They didn't have any warts on it.
- 1:28Now it's got a wart, now it's got a ward, and it doesn't have
- 1:32a signature. What I would call a signature
- 1:35win on it either. There's some nice wins, there's
- 1:37some decent wins. There's a couple of quad ones in
- 1:39there. But yeah, that big one, that one
- 1:41that's really going to resonate. And maybe the biggest
- 1:43opportunity is going to be at senior Day there at the end of
- 1:45the season as they got Michigan come to town for that one in
- 1:48March, but plenty of basketball before that.
- 1:51Let's go back first to Wednesday night against Maryland at the
- 1:54weird 5:00 central tip off time for that one.
- 1:56Didn't matter. They were on the East close.
- 1:58Their their college guys are going to be fine obviously at
- 2:00any time of day. But Maryland, a team that
- 2:03doesn't shoot it really well, they were just driving by Iowa.
- 2:06It's the defensive performance, maybe that gave me more pause.
- 2:09I know they missed their what, last 12-3 pointers?
- 2:12Yes, that's concerning in its own right.
- 2:13But it was what happened on the defensive end.
- 2:15To me that says, oh boy, are we running into some issues here?
- 2:19Because overall though, they had a six game-winning streak after
- 2:22the Indiana game. I could argue in all those
- 2:24games, and certainly for the first half against Washington, I
- 2:27wouldn't play their best basketball even during the win
- 2:29streak. Yeah, they have.
- 2:33I think the the way I phrased it after the game was they've been
- 2:36playing with fire and they finally got burned because
- 2:40they've just been, it's been this growing reliance from the
- 2:44other guys on the team. And I asked Ben McCollum about
- 2:46this today too. It just seems like everybody's
- 2:50kind of just like, well, then it'll just bail us out.
- 2:52Let's get the ball to Bennett. He'll just bail us out.
- 2:54And and Bennett was doing that. I mean, you see his scoring
- 2:59spiking up and and these 30 plus point games, but that was just
- 3:06not sustainable. And Ben McCollum said he
- 3:09addressed it to the team that, yeah, they are been deferring it
- 3:13too much and that those guys are talented on offense too and they
- 3:18can score. And it's not like Bennett is is
- 3:22going all ball hog either. He doesn't, you know, he'd
- 3:25rather pass the ball than shoot it, I think half the time.
- 3:28And but he just does what he has to do to win and they've but
- 3:33it's but it's a growing concern that defensively he's the first
- 3:37thing he mentioned about the game on Wednesday was the
- 3:40straight line drives right to the rim.
- 3:42I mean, the Mills kid was just going there all the time and and
- 3:47Coit was going there whenever he really needed to as well.
- 3:50So and that's been something that has been occurring more
- 3:54often, even against other teams, against Washington and against
- 3:58the, you know, you saw Zoom Diallo do that the first half
- 4:01quite a bit and then they kind of locked him up a little bit
- 4:03more in the second-half. But that's something they're
- 4:06going to have to address. More balanced scoring is going
- 4:09to have to be addressed. And, and you've got the Purdue
- 4:13team that's, you know, coming in this week and then Nebraska
- 4:19early next week. So the two huge games coming up.
- 4:22No doubt a Purdue team that survived after nearly blowing
- 4:25The Big Lead against Nebraska in overtime, getting the win in
- 4:28that one. And maybe the most concerning
- 4:29part, Yeah, they're big. That that's always a concern
- 4:32against this Iowa team that isn't exactly big.
- 4:34But I don't think Fletcher Lawyer is going to go 4 of 17
- 4:37from three. Again.
- 4:39That's my concern is he goes in there and suddenly, well, he
- 4:41might make 4, but it's only going to take 7 as opposed to
- 4:4317. This team could shoot it from
- 4:45the outside. They got bigs inside.
- 4:47I know Iowa played well in that first match up.
- 4:49It still just doesn't feel like a very good match up though for
- 4:52the Hawkeyes. It isn't when you look back at
- 4:55that, that that box score. Iowa was 12 of 25 from three in
- 4:59that game, you know, basically shooting 50%.
- 5:03Kale Combs had who has not been playing well at 43 point field
- 5:07goals in that game at a career high 16 points in that contest.
- 5:12The thing that really concerned you though is Iowa is not a
- 5:17great rebounding team this year. I just haven't been.
- 5:20And you look at what what Purdue did at Nebraska, they had over
- 5:2450 rebounds, including twenty on the offense event.
- 5:28And if they're and the offensive boards has been an issue for
- 5:34Iowa in terms of getting those defensive rebounds, they just
- 5:37have not done that consistently. And they've allowed some
- 5:42offensive rebounds. So that has got to be a concern
- 5:44because, you know, Oscar Clough and Trick Hoffman ran par.
- 5:50Those guys were all just kind of playing volleyball with the ball
- 5:53and the on the glass in that, particularly in the second-half
- 5:57against Nebraska. Because Nebraska, you know, even
- 6:00though they were down 22 points, they probably should have won
- 6:02that game. But they, you know, Purdue
- 6:04missed a bunch of free throws and, and, and kept allowing
- 6:09offensive rebounds. Yeah, that was kind of
- 6:11heartbreaking. They came all the way back and
- 6:13then they just. Slip on the floor.
- 6:16Thomas Brad Rose I just, you know, as I watch those games, I
- 6:19watched, you know, USC or Minnesota be able to isolate a
- 6:23kid that hadn't scored very much and ends up scoring.
- 6:26I can't remember which game that was.
- 6:27The kid scored about 27 on us. My question is more about how do
- 6:32we get Banks and and and Cook and some of the other kids?
- 6:36How do we get them back into the offensive flow?
- 6:40I feel like our Iowa's defense is always going to travel.
- 6:44I think they'll do things even though they're undersized a
- 6:46little bit to to make things hard for other teams.
- 6:49But how do we get those other guys involved offensively?
- 6:52Yeah, you were the guy you were referencing Kim Woods.
- 6:55Yeah, that's. The the 30 plus points in that
- 6:58game and 27 of them I think or 28 of them in the second-half.
- 7:04You know you've he went, as Trent would determine, he went
- 7:07all Charles Bugs. My my favorite reference, yes he
- 7:10went Charles Bugs on the Hawkeyes.
- 7:12No hey Gatewood. Since then he's actually played
- 7:15really well for USC. I watched him a couple of
- 7:16different times because he came in with 26 points all year long.
- 7:20Had 33 against Iowa. He has been playing well.
- 7:22So apparently you just need to play Iowa and that ignites the
- 7:24switch for players. Well, I hate, I don't mean to
- 7:26change my own question, but my concern there was they were able
- 7:28to isolate. They were and.
- 7:30And that was sort of like, oh, like, oh moment like, hey.
- 7:35Yeah, and Ben and Ben will not play zone, just just not going
- 7:39to do it. So it's just not something he's
- 7:41going to do. So they're kind of, you know,
- 7:43limited and they're going to play man, but they're going to
- 7:46try and help with gaps and they're they're not against
- 7:49Dublin. So the but you're right, the
- 7:54offensive side of things for Iowa too, is, you know, some of
- 7:57those guys are just not scoring well.
- 7:59Fogharis had those three games in a row or he was in double
- 8:02figures. By the way, Iowa 11 and O this
- 8:05year and Alvaro Fogarist is in double figures.
- 8:08And the last two games he had six points against Northwestern.
- 8:11Not a great game, but it's OK. And then at Maryland, he scored
- 8:17as many as Trent did in the game, which is 0.
- 8:20So I that's, you know, he's he's got to be one of their top three
- 8:26scores of the game, in my opinion.
- 8:29Banks has been, I think pretty good.
- 8:32A Cam is sort of came in, you know, sort of like a garbage
- 8:35man. But right now Combs is not
- 8:37giving him a lot offensively coops hitting probably 1/3 a
- 8:42game. But you know, you'd like to see
- 8:44a little bit more from Cooper Koch.
- 8:47And then is that Howard's really struggled.
- 8:50The guy that really kind of helped him, gave him a little
- 8:52bit of spark was Brendan Housen Talked to him today a little bit
- 8:56and he came in and hit a couple threes, but then he missed,
- 8:59missed his last five. And that I thought, I thought on
- 9:05Wednesday they just settled for too many 3 pointers late game
- 9:08between Bennett and House. And because Maryland had some
- 9:12significant foul trouble and they should have really tried to
- 9:15get in the lane, get to the get to the hoop, and they didn't do
- 9:19that and kind of just stumbled for the threes and they weren't
- 9:21falling. I guess the good news is they're
- 9:23not broken. Yeah, it didn't seem like they
- 9:25were in rhythm either. So they got no offensive boards
- 9:27off of those shots either, because it wasn't.
- 9:29It seemed out of rhythm a little bit.
- 9:31You mentioned Koch, he had a couple of good looks too.
- 9:33Those are just looks he has to have.
- 9:34He's he's too good of a shooter to miss that many open looks
- 9:37like he did in that one. It's frustrating, no doubt.
- 9:40But I think when they began this group of games, this seven game,
- 9:44if you would have told any Hawkeye fan, hey, you're going
- 9:46to go 6 and one, I think every single one of them would have
- 9:49said yes, absolutely, sign me up for that.
- 9:51After the three-game losing streak, it was just the fashion.
- 9:54Win six in a row, then lose to Maryland and then that leaves
- 9:56people kicking themselves. Now we talked about Maryland,
- 9:59it's Nebraska after that. Then you got to go to Wisconsin.
- 10:02Then you got Ohio State coming in, who's a tournament team,
- 10:04still got Michigan and another Nebraska match up here.
- 10:07Closing stretch, incredibly difficult.
- 10:09Are they ready for it? Ben McCullum going through it
- 10:11for the first time in the Big 10.
- 10:13Are you confident that they're going to have their head above
- 10:16water? And I'm not going to have to
- 10:18find another term like I came up with a free and fade.
- 10:21The Fran, the the Fran fade. Here's the good news is that
- 10:25four of those games are at home. So we kind of think that they'll
- 10:30they will get that one and tell you, you know, everybody's kind
- 10:32of saying, well, they'll win at Penn State.
- 10:34Penn State's kind of sneaky went out to Washington the other
- 10:38night and won. And they have kind of the the
- 10:42type of players that have given Iowa trouble, those guards that
- 10:45can get to the rim. And so they're going to have to
- 10:50that's not and and you know, it's a that that's a Saturday,
- 10:5311 AM Central sleepy. There'd be nobody there.
- 10:59You know, that's a sleepy spot for for Iowa.
- 11:02So they've got to take care of business at home.
- 11:04And probably honestly, they probably got to get two of the
- 11:08four at home. And then, you know, when at Penn
- 11:12State, then you you've got three wins out of this.
- 11:15But you know, if you would have told me before the seat, I think
- 11:19I picked Iowa to be 21 and 10 for the year.
- 11:22So there are a couple three wins away from that right now.
- 11:26And if they can get three more wins and I I think they've met
- 11:30expectations this year, but this is this is a huge game.
- 11:34These next two, I think are really, really important for the
- 11:38psyche of the team and for the psyche of the Iowa fan base
- 11:41that's seen the chair pulled out from underneath them more than
- 11:44once are. You are you saying the Hawkeye
- 11:46fan base is fickle? Come on, Tom.
- 11:48I don't know that they would be fickle, but they're they're
- 11:51easily disappointed. That's true.
- 11:54What do you enjoy most about Coach McCollum?
- 11:56What do you enjoy most about him?
- 11:59His honesty, he's just really, he's almost too honest sometimes
- 12:06where he's just he's really just, you know, just so honest
- 12:12about what's going on. You know, I brought up the thing
- 12:15about the about the players kind of deferring.
- 12:17He's like, yeah, you're right, you know, And to talk to him
- 12:19about it, you know, it's like you're not used to that from
- 12:24coaches or they kind of talk around things and don't give you
- 12:30real introspective answers. And and he is really good about
- 12:34that and he's really accommodating and really
- 12:36welcoming. It's not kind of standoffish
- 12:39where, you know, Fran, towards the end, he could he could run
- 12:42hot and cold. I mean, he you know, he's like
- 12:44his personality was just there's some nights you'd talk to him
- 12:47and get yes, no, and that was it.
- 12:50And then there's other nights he'd be really expansive in his
- 12:53answers. Ben's always expansive in his
- 12:55answers, then open to just about any question too.
- 12:58Very thoughtful and that's yeah, my conversations with the
- 13:00McCullum. It's it's been different
- 13:02certainly and and enjoy it. But yeah, there are times maybe
- 13:05it's just a little bit too much there.
- 13:07I definitely get that perspective.
- 13:09I got one question for you on Iowa woman's basketball.
- 13:11Brads got one for you on Iowa wrestling as we wrap up here,
- 13:14Tom, a needed win for the eyeball women.
- 13:17You beat Washington, you give up 25 in the first quarter.
- 13:20It's like here they go again. They can't play any defense.
- 13:22He lose McCabe and now he can't play deep.
- 13:24But they buckle down in the final 3/4, give up just 31
- 13:27combined points over those three.
- 13:29They get the victory. Now.
- 13:31They got this weird 11 AM tip off against Nebraska.
- 13:33Monday. They go to Purdue after that.
- 13:36The road slate is an overly difficult Michigan still on
- 13:39there. Where are you at right now with
- 13:40this team? A much needed victory.
- 13:42Is it? Is it enough to kind of cure
- 13:44their ills, if you will? Yeah, I think it will.
- 13:48It's going to help him. I think moving Strumlow into the
- 13:51starting lineup was was a really smart move from from Jan just
- 13:55because Taylor had started before and she seems pretty
- 13:58comfortable in that role. And it kind of takes some of
- 14:01that pressure off of Addie deal. There's just there's already so
- 14:04much pressure on her because everybody thinks, well, she's a
- 14:07five star, she's got to be great and she's got to do all this and
- 14:10do that. And it's it's not that easy.
- 14:13And she was, I thought, just really getting comfortable in
- 14:17that role, coming off the bench and starting to thrive when
- 14:22Taylor McCabe goes down. So I know they tried to like
- 14:25press the hot hand a little bit that daddy was coming along, but
- 14:28that was probably not the direction.
- 14:31But now you've got Tremolo out there.
- 14:32I think she's playing well. But this Presidents Day game at
- 14:3611 AM is going to be interesting.
- 14:39Nebraska is pretty good and I always got some challenging
- 14:44games ahead, but we'll, we'll see.
- 14:46I feel better about them. I think the big thing for them,
- 14:49they've got to keep winning enough games to be able to host
- 14:53for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
- 14:56That's got to be their goal. Win 3 out of five, probably in
- 14:59good shape. Don't take a big loss of the Big
- 15:0110 tournament and that's enough. Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 15:04I think that would be enough because they've got some good
- 15:08wins. They do.
- 15:09They've got they've got a good, good resume of of victories and
- 15:15they they hit a little bump in the road.
- 15:16But you know, I don't know that any of those.
- 15:20I know people pointed out Minnesota, but Minnesota's net
- 15:23is really good and they're just that's a that's a team that's
- 15:28that's good. I think the margin was the big
- 15:30surprise for the the loss of the golf.
- 15:33My Tom, my question about wrestling is, you know, I have a
- 15:37lot of wrestling friends, a lot of a lot of coaches I know and
- 15:41certainly the state of Iowa's with Iowa and Iowa State
- 15:44wrestling. What's the panic level?
- 15:47What's the panic level like over in Iowa City with I mean, we've
- 15:50always been, I mean, since I was a kid, Iowa wrestling's been
- 15:54right there, you know what I mean?
- 15:56So how's the feelings over there?
- 15:59Remember those the movie War Games where they had the DEFCON
- 16:03levels and everything and it was like DEFCON 5 was pretty calm,
- 16:07but when it got to one, it was like we're all going to die
- 16:11here. It's probably about DEFCON 2
- 16:13right now for Iowa Wrestling Boy.
- 16:16They're just, there's a sense of frustration that I haven't seen
- 16:23and, and I've seen some kind of grumpy wrestling fans in the
- 16:26past, but it is, it's really bad right now to be honest.
- 16:32This is not the performance is there or anything like that.
- 16:37They're just they're doing the best they can.
- 16:39But the Iowa wrestling has had a place in college wrestling.
- 16:47That's, you know where it's where Penn State is now.
- 16:50That's where I will wrestle. Iowa wrestling fans believe that
- 16:53Iowa should be, and they're right to feel that way because
- 16:57of what Dan Gable was able to accomplish.
- 16:59But you know, they are really struggling right now because
- 17:04they don't. I think the thing that
- 17:07frustrates Iowa wrestling fans the most is that the team does
- 17:11not. They're not aggressive.
- 17:14You know, they're not getting takedowns.
- 17:16I mean, the second-half of the Penn State, I mean they didn't
- 17:20have one takedown. I think though Ohio State won
- 17:23the second-half, they didn't have any takedowns or maybe 1
- 17:26takedown. It's that you that's not Gabe
- 17:30Dan Gable wrestling. That's not what I think.
- 17:33Iowa fans would feel better if they were.
- 17:35Those guys were going out and going down swinging, but they
- 17:37just haven't done that. Yeah, the Writer Block Kid has
- 17:40been a lot of fun to watch. Yeah, but I can't tell you that
- 17:43I've seen a lot of aggressiveness out of the other
- 17:45kids. You're right.
- 17:46It's different and not what Hawkeye wrestling fans are used
- 17:50to. Our buddy Hawkeye, Andy, he'll
- 17:51be there in attendance tonight. We'll see if he could actually
- 17:54see a couple of takedowns. And Tanner, he's got things
- 17:56covered over at Hawkeye Report for you, Tom, him, Kyle Huseman,
- 18:00you guys got a lot going on. Baseball season underway today.
- 18:03First pitch against K State. He got softball.
- 18:06That is happening and a new soccer coach over there as well.
- 18:10Yeah, new soccer coach seems like a really good hire for best
- 18:14guess, too. I mean, you know, comes over
- 18:17from Dean Ward, comes over from Xavier, where he's won 31 games
- 18:22in the last two years. I think the big question we've
- 18:24got to find out is what's his Premier League team?
- 18:27He's a Brit, so we've got to find out what is, what is, what
- 18:31scarf he's got and that'll decide where, you know, how much
- 18:35we like him, you know? No doubt, Tom Caker,
- 18:38hawkeyereport.com joining us as he does Fridays on Miller and
- 18:42Condon. Tom, thank you for your time.
- 18:44All right. Thanks guys.
- 18:45Yes, Tom Caker, hawkeyereport.com, part of On
- 18:48Three Media. Brad Rose with me today for the
- 18:52Hawkeyes. I I heard it a couple of times.
- 18:54We. So you're a Hawkeye fan?
- 18:56Yes, I, I probably leaked that out.
- 18:58I, my grandfather worked at Iowa State, Betsy Hall in the botany
- 19:01department. But I and I grew up when I was
- 19:04younger around there. Then we moved when I was a kid
- 19:07down to southeast Iowa and Hayden Frye and the Hawkeyes.
- 19:11And I live next door to an Iowa wrestler, you know, so Dan Glenn
- 19:15was my neighbor. And so quickly we became Hawkeye
- 19:18fans. Hawkeyes, Hawkeyes.
- 19:20Hawkeyes. Yes, same thing.
- 19:22And when we grew up, and I'm a little bit younger than you, but
- 19:26I talk about this all the time, the Hawkeye Basketball Network
- 19:29statewide, I watched it in KIMT up in Mason City.
- 19:32It didn't matter if you're in Eastern Iowa and it was on KWWL
- 19:35or Sioux City or here in Des Moines, you got every single
- 19:39Iowa basketball game. And the way that that just
- 19:41gripped certainly the faint of my generation was incredible.
- 19:45You saw kind of as it was formulating and turning into
- 19:47that. Kids today, they have no idea
- 19:52the importance of what Iowa basketball meant.
- 19:54Yeah, No idea how. And we just were glued to it.
- 19:57You knew what you know, you knew in fifth grade, the Hawks are on
- 20:01tomorrow night, you know, and even even Iowa Wrestling, Iowa
- 20:04Public Television or whatever, whoever was broadcasting, we
- 20:08jump on and watch it, you know, But at Iowa Basketball Network,
- 20:11Lou Olson, and then, you know, George and Doctor Tom.
- 20:14I mean it Just it it. One just picked up after the
- 20:17other one just kept improving on it.
- 20:19Time after time after time. Well, Brad Rose is with us.
- 20:22We got a little bit more coming up with Rose, but coming up
- 20:24next, we're going to be joined by Mike Palm, his standard
- 20:27Friday hit, as well as we hit our Friday guests from Circa
- 20:30Sports. We're going to talk a little bit
- 20:32about what's happening in the world of wagering next.
- 20:34Mike Palm joins us, a also native Iowan that's next on
- 20:38Miller and Condon, the Iowa Sports Radio Network. 1:30 on a
- 20:49Friday, it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:52Network. Trent Solo here for the next
- 20:55couple of weeks. But I got great people hanging
- 20:57out with me today. Brad Rose, the athletic director
- 21:01recently retired over at West Des Moines Valley.
- 21:03We're going to talk with Brad a little bit more, dig into his
- 21:06life and some other high school questions that have popped up
- 21:09about the future of high school athletics.
- 21:11Couple of ones we're going to get to with Brad.
- 21:13But right now it's time to talk gambling in the sports world
- 21:17with Mike Palm from Circa Sports, the biggest sports book
- 21:20in the world, as he joins us each and every Friday on Miller
- 21:23and Cotton. Mr. Palm is always good to talk
- 21:25with you. What's happening out in Vegas?
- 21:27A quiet weekend I'm going to anticipate after last week's
- 21:29Super Bowl. Mike, you got us there.
- 21:37You. Go Yeah.
- 21:38Can you hear me? Yep, got you now.
- 21:39Yeah, yeah. You don't have the full NBA
- 21:42slate All Star weekend. Of course, the NHL is shut down
- 21:45for the Olympics over there in Italy.
- 21:48No MMA event this weekend. I think the Pebble Beach will
- 21:52see an increase right with with really competing just against
- 21:56college basketball this week. And it's not a bad Saturday.
- 21:59But yeah, it's a strange weekend for sports.
- 22:02Certainly is the All Star game. I mean, I have to guess you guys
- 22:06have no right no kind of handle on something like that.
- 22:09Does does the game get anything? Do people bet on who's going to
- 22:12win the three-point contest, the dunk contest?
- 22:15What are we talking about here when it comes to these these
- 22:17events that have certainly dissipated throughout the years
- 22:20in terms of just the sports, less what we've seen sports
- 22:23wise? You know when you go back even
- 22:25not that many years and you had decent handle on the Pro Bowl
- 22:28and the NBA All Star game and now it's basically 0 on both
- 22:32this new four man, I don't want to take the time to learn it.
- 22:36The only thing really that gets any action now is a three-point
- 22:38contest. Nobody cares about.
- 22:41You don't have the superstars in the dunk contest anymore.
- 22:44Nobody really cares about it. But the three-point contest, at
- 22:47least you get some of the top long distance shooters competing
- 22:50in it. But even then, you know, we're
- 22:51going to, we'll write, you know, 1520 thousand total on the
- 22:54event. Gotcha.
- 22:55A little bit different than what you saw last week with the Super
- 22:58Bowl and the right that you guys were doing on that and and the
- 23:00$1,000,000 wagers that were happening in Circa for our radio
- 23:04audience. I know we talked earlier this
- 23:05week on the TV side for our show on MC22.
- 23:08Fill us in a little bit the details which for you guys at
- 23:11Circa felt like the Seahawks winning.
- 23:13Maybe you guys were in a difficult position, but that two
- 23:16week period ended up working out pretty well for you guys at
- 23:19Circa Sports. Yeah, we were in a tough spot
- 23:21because of the Seahawks futures from August from that one
- 23:24gentleman and you know, having 50,000 on the CX at 75 to one.
- 23:31But he himself, right after the championship Sunday, that 1.1
- 23:36million on the Patriots plus 188, and then we did not have
- 23:40any other $1,000,000 bets until Sunday.
- 23:44A gentleman that's made several large wages with us before
- 23:47wanting to bet the Seahawks called a Sunday morning one to
- 23:49bet a million money line. OK, so he came down, but by the
- 23:53time he got here like around 1:00, the price had moved two
- 23:56cents. It was 2 cents heavier than one
- 23:59when he talked on the phone and he said, well, I want to make it
- 24:02at that price, so move it, move it back two cents.
- 24:04And we said, of course, no, you get the bet what the number is
- 24:07right now. So he went to The MGM and bet
- 24:09it. So we didn't take that.
- 24:12You know, we didn't lose that on the Seahawks.
- 24:14And then about an hour before the game, one of our largest NFL
- 24:19betters said, hey, I'm really long on Seahawks futures, not
- 24:22with us. He said, I would like to get a
- 24:24million on the Patriots money line.
- 24:26And so he came down with about 30 before the game betted.
- 24:28So what looked like was going to be, you know, 1,000,000, 1/2 or
- 24:32so loser for us to the to the Seahawks actually ended up we
- 24:36win just a little less than a million to the result of the
- 24:38game. Props, no props that hurt us.
- 24:41You know, MVP was fine. The first touchdown score was
- 24:44fine as long as there was a touchdown, so yeah.
- 24:48And the under was good for us, so it worked out fantastically.
- 24:52As you can imagine, football season comes to a close and
- 24:54we're always looking about content for you guys at Circa.
- 24:57I'm sure you're already starting the planning stages of next
- 25:00football season and with it with it the great contest that you
- 25:02have there with Circa Survivor and Circa Millions.
- 25:06Anything that you can share or is it still in the preliminary
- 25:09stages? You're just kind of planning
- 25:11what the contests are going to look like.
- 25:13You did something different this year with Grand DC MO and the
- 25:16thousand $100,000 entry that was available and you guys certainly
- 25:20outpaced what a lot of people thought you were going to get
- 25:22for that one. Anything as we look to the
- 25:24contest for 2026. Well, you know, we've already
- 25:28started discussing guarantees. What will they be?
- 25:31Do we still need them? Interestingly enough, with this
- 25:34Australia game, if they're going to play it on a Wednesday to
- 25:37open the year and still have a Thursday, which they will right,
- 25:41and still and a Friday, if they're going to have a
- 25:44Wednesday, Thursday, Friday of opening week, maybe that's its
- 25:47own week itself. And.
- 25:48Survive. With the with the ability, let's
- 25:53say and this is another debate point, we in our text the last
- 25:5624 hours, if you lose on that week, can you get back in before
- 25:59the Sunday game, which effectively would be week 11B
- 26:02then, right? Yes, I think it's very
- 26:05interesting. So we have to wait for the
- 26:07schedule to come out, but we're already thinking about that.
- 26:10That is an interesting 1. So what have you guys heard?
- 26:12I know you have some ends with the NFL and scheduling.
- 26:16Is it a better than 5050 chance that we're going to get the
- 26:19season opening in Australia on that Wednesday?
- 26:21Is that what you guys are hearing?
- 26:23Yeah. Well, I think it's around the
- 26:2475% chance that's what's going to happen from our context.
- 26:28So once we once we heard that, we said, let's let's be creative
- 26:32with this. I love that that is certainly
- 26:35going to do well. And for somebody like me, I, I
- 26:38put my entry in every year and it's wasted money and it goes
- 26:40down the drain and and I lose it.
- 26:42We laugh about it here on the radio every single year.
- 26:44But for so many people that I'm sure think that they have a real
- 26:48chance. How many more people are going
- 26:50to be sticking around Vegas and are going to be staying in Las
- 26:52Vegas knowing if I get knocked out Wednesday, Thursday or
- 26:55Friday, I can buy back in. You guys have to anticipate if
- 26:59that's the case in what you guys do, you're going to have a lot
- 27:01more people, which is already a huge week with week one of the
- 27:04NFL. They're going to be sticking
- 27:05around through the weekend. You know, this might become, I
- 27:08used to say, you know, we say March madness #1, Super Bowl #2
- 27:12and then Wild Card weekend and opening weekend, you know, 3 and
- 27:153A. I I think opening weekend is
- 27:18going to become clearly the third biggest weekend in Las
- 27:20Vegas every year. Going to be huge, no doubt about
- 27:22it. One other thing, we're seeing
- 27:24the continued talk about what the future of the College
- 27:27Football Playoff is going to look like.
- 27:29You're fighting Irish got an even better in starting next
- 27:32season and able to get in if they're in the top 12 to the
- 27:35playoff. But the Big 10 has continued to
- 27:37try to push a 2014 bracket. They wanted to have the ability
- 27:41to have play in games and get more TV inventory that went
- 27:44along with it. Is it just inevitable we're
- 27:47going to get to 16 and then likely 24?
- 27:51Should we just do it now, get to the point, the end point that we
- 27:53think we're going to get to with 24 teams or you push back?
- 27:57Let's just keep it how it is. How do you look at it?
- 27:58The College Football Playoff? Are we going to get to 32?
- 28:02I mean, are we going to go to 64?
- 28:05How soon? You're going to have to, you're
- 28:06going to have to start stopping what you're going to have to
- 28:09start. I saw the Big 10 starts the
- 28:12second week of December. I mean, you're going to get to
- 28:13the point where they're going to be starting the playoff right
- 28:15after Thanksgiving. I don't know, I think football
- 28:19is such a different animal. The Cinderella doesn't really
- 28:22have a chance. I mean, me and Miami was a
- 28:24Tennessee, but not really right. I mean, so this teams like the
- 28:28James Madison and all this they did over 60 minutes.
- 28:31They're not winning these games. So I'm I'm comfortable.
- 28:36I'm comfortable at 16. I'm comfortable at 12.
- 28:39I just, I thought 6 wasn't enough.
- 28:44Once we got to 12, I'm fine either way.
- 28:47There's always going to be the teams that have the arguments
- 28:49that they were left out. It was Notre Dame this year.
- 28:52I didn't think they had an argument against Miami.
- 28:53I thought it was against Alabama.
- 28:55But So what? Somebody's in and somebody's
- 28:57out. This did what you know the Big
- 28:5910 and FCC are going to want 7 guaranteed spots and this and
- 29:02that. I, I, I just think if you can't
- 29:04finish in the top 4 in your conference, should you really be
- 29:07in the playoff? It's an argument that's a good
- 29:10one, no doubt, and definitely there's that kind of push back
- 29:14for it as well. And how many games do you want
- 29:16college teams playing? The NFL is already juggling
- 29:19with, boy, the 17th game, all the extra games, you know, are
- 29:22we getting too many injuries? Teams are, you know, losing guys
- 29:26every year, and I mean college. I mean, how many games do you
- 29:28want to play? I like your idea of staying
- 29:30staying where it's at or 16th the most.
- 29:32And, and Mike, you remember when Northern Iowa made their run all
- 29:35the way to the national championship game?
- 29:37I remember talking with Mark Farley afterwards and he brought
- 29:40up just how dead that team was. I mean, they were, they don't
- 29:43have the scholarships obviously at that level that they do at
- 29:45the FBS level. But he said we got to that end
- 29:48of the season and we were we're held together by Scotch tape.
- 29:51I mean, it was just these guys have played a lot of football
- 29:53and that was of the year. I think it was just a 16 team
- 29:55playoff back then in one AA when they made it to the championship
- 29:59game. You are putting a lot on these
- 30:00guys just physically. And did we learn that again this
- 30:03year in the NFLI mean with the injuries that we've seen now
- 30:06they want to go to an 18 game schedule.
- 30:08How do you keep these guys healthy?
- 30:09Play in this kind of game, Mike? I would also trend play every
- 30:13game except the national championship game on campus at
- 30:16the highest seated. I think it's ridiculous.
- 30:19You go to go to the Orange Bowl and Oregon had 200 people there.
- 30:23And what does this do for the sport to see empty stadiums keep
- 30:26these games as long as the campuses can support this, I
- 30:29would keep these games on campus.
- 30:31I mean, I see, you know, the Winter Classic for the NHL.
- 30:33They finally got it out of Texas and Florida.
- 30:36Next year they hit a home run Rice Eccles Stadium.
- 30:38They can't announce the date yet because they're not sure of the
- 30:41format and maybe Utah's in and maybe they're hosting games.
- 30:44I would make that change. I think that's the biggest
- 30:46thing. They need to do everything on
- 30:47campus until the final game. That's a great idea.
- 30:50You have singing exactly what I've been talking about.
- 30:52Also, Mike, we are in simpatico certainly on that one.
- 30:56Circus Sports, you can download the app here in the state of
- 30:58Iowa along with our neighboring states down in Missouri, now
- 31:01avail and of course over in Illinois here as we go across
- 31:04the state of Iowa and into our surrounding states, download the
- 31:07Circus Sports Iowa app. Mike, as always, appreciate the
- 31:09time. We'll talk to you again soon.
- 31:11Thanks gentlemen. Have a great weekend.
- 31:12You too. That is Mike Palm.
- 31:14He is the VP of operations at Circa Sports.
- 31:17And next time you're in Las Vegas, make it downtown and see
- 31:21the crown jewel of downtown Circa.
- 31:24Beautiful resort there. The stadium swim experience is
- 31:27absolutely amazing. And March Madness right around
- 31:30the corner. Mike told me Wednesday on TV.
- 31:32They do still have a couple of rooms available if you're
- 31:35looking to head out there for the NCAA tournament.
- 31:37Well, Mr. Rose, we're talking about the College Football
- 31:39Playoff. Then the creep continues.
- 31:42Went from 4 then to 12. We're going to get to 24 I think
- 31:47eventually at some point. You brought up a very pertinent
- 31:50point, though, and I'm sure you even see it at the high school
- 31:54level. Think of the Valley teams that
- 31:56have got to the championships and one state championships and
- 31:59even these high school kids that play a nine game regular season
- 32:02by the time they get to the Dome for the semifinals in the
- 32:04championship, that's a lot of football on those kids too.
- 32:07At least we moved away from back when we had the playoff games
- 32:10that opened on Wednesday. Wednesday.
- 32:11Monday. Wednesday, Monday, Friday and
- 32:14playing what turned out to be what, three games in 11 days or
- 32:17something like that. That's.
- 32:17The best possible competition, right?
- 32:19Going to Fridays was a good move.
- 32:21Yes. And pushing that thing back just
- 32:23a little bit more, it's a lot. Football's a lot.
- 32:26It is so physically demanding and the offensive line, the
- 32:30Patriots, well, they couldn't black Yeah, because they're left
- 32:32tackle as an ACL tear, right? I mean, we we have these kind of
- 32:36things that are happening and the injuries of football, it's a
- 32:38different animal. But the problem there doesn't
- 32:41seem like there's an easy. Solution.
- 32:42Well, it's just like, you know, Richard Sherman when he used to
- 32:44argue, you know, you want us to play on Thursday, then you want
- 32:47us to, you know, four days rest and play.
- 32:49And I think they really have to take a look at that.
- 32:51And I would be, I know I love the NFL, I love watching games
- 32:57and I'm part of a fantasy Football League, the demon
- 33:00fantasy Football League. So we, we, we love the games and
- 33:03we love doing that stuff. But I do think you have to think
- 33:06about safety and longevity of these players.
- 33:08And even at the high school level, I've, I've said, why
- 33:10don't we just play eight games? Then everybody makes the
- 33:12playoffs and playoff game is week 9.
- 33:15And then if you look at it, it, it's, it's not that much harder.
- 33:17You can still seed it. But when you get it, I know
- 33:20there's teams that are O18 and probably shouldn't be in the
- 33:22playoffs, but we every other sport, you make it, every
- 33:25baseball team gets to go, every basketball team gets to score,
- 33:27every wrestler gets a chance. You know, every soccer team and
- 33:32they all they all get to play. So but football is the only one
- 33:34we have to have a selection. And I know it sounds crazy.
- 33:37You don't want to the number one team playing the 64th best team
- 33:41probably in high school sports, but you could do some type of
- 33:44play in. And anyway, I think in college
- 33:48it it could be that way too. And even in the pros, you know.
- 33:50Because high school football, currently 5A comprises 40 teams.
- 33:54Is that right? I can't answer that I should
- 33:57know that, but I I think it's if it's 40 or 4840 or 48.
- 34:01But there be buys then built into that and you do that and if
- 34:04you win your district or win your conference, however the
- 34:07setup is, then you get a buy in the first round, you get a
- 34:09little bit of rest and then you move from there.
- 34:11I think like college, no ones against the best four teams.
- 34:15Maybe there's some question on who should get to buy.
- 34:17But the teams that are out like Notre Dame, they would have
- 34:21loved to play in game. Oh, absolutely.
- 34:22You know what I mean? And and they they think they
- 34:24were as good as Miami, which in all fairness, they were pretty
- 34:27close, right? So they're thinking themselves,
- 34:29why couldn't we made a run? You know, and I mean, there's
- 34:33all of us Iowa and Iowa State fans.
- 34:35We have our own scenarios of how those two teams could have got
- 34:37in, you know? You made a run, You never know,
- 34:40right? Just get in there and that's the
- 34:41path that everybody's trying to take.
- 34:43We're due for one final time out.
- 34:44We'll come back on the other side, put a cap on things, got a
- 34:47few other things and found out Rosie's a fantasy player.
- 34:50We'll see how long he's been playing fantasy football and
- 34:53he's got a championships on the mantle.
- 34:54We continue. It's Miller and Condon, welcome
- 34:56back one final time. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 34:59Iowa Sports Radio Network, joined by Brad Rose, former
- 35:03athletic director at West Des Moines Valley.
- 35:05Baseball coach at Ankeny and one of your Ankeny Hawks said it was
- 35:08a big hit back there in the early 2000s.
- 35:10You guys played a practice? Yeah, we did.
- 35:13I can't believe you're cranking that.
- 35:15I think you like that one yes. I want to find you here.
- 35:18It was a tweet. I got to see find the name of
- 35:21your former player that well, he's he's getting up there now
- 35:24just a little bit. Here it is as we go back
- 35:26through, scroll through Nathan Pick.
- 35:28Oh, yeah. Nathan Pick.
- 35:29Yeah. Said that was a banger back in
- 35:312000, 2001, 2002 season for you. Love that.
- 35:37Well, as we wrap things up, Brad Rose with us here today, You've
- 35:41seen a lot of great athletes that have come through the halls
- 35:43of Valley High School, through the CIML, through the state of
- 35:47Iowa throughout the year. So during your time, I posed it
- 35:50to you a little bit earlier. Who's the top of the list?
- 35:52Who's the name? When you think of Oh yeah,
- 35:54there's no doubt this was the best athlete that I've seen.
- 35:56Who are those names that jumped to top of mind?
- 35:59Well, first of all, I'm missing. No matter what I say, I'm going
- 36:02to miss some people. You know what I mean?
- 36:03And you're. Going to be kicking yourself
- 36:04tonight. There's people from all over the
- 36:06league. It's, it's first of all, I
- 36:07don't, I don't think the, the, the fan base out there really
- 36:10understands if you spend 17 years going to CIML events and
- 36:15state tournament advances, many, you know, 40 state championships
- 36:20and probably 18 second place finishes that we had at Valley,
- 36:24The number of athletes that just the, the, the talent is
- 36:27incredible. I mean, Eli Reardon always is
- 36:29one of my favourites. And I said Maddie Kubik earlier,
- 36:33just through leadership, at the same time Maddie Kubik was
- 36:35playing volleyball, Hannah Locken was playing as well and
- 36:38she went to Baylor and became an All American as well in
- 36:40volleyball. So you had two high school
- 36:42Americans on the same volleyball team and yet we got second
- 36:45because Centennial was so good. They had three Division One
- 36:48players. You know, someone like Zoe Young
- 36:51who went to Maryland and LED us to two state basketball titles
- 36:53under Joe Segrist in in basketball.
- 36:56You know, some of my favorites like Trev Urak and Zay Robinson
- 37:00and those guys that played on the three peat team with BJ
- 37:03Windhorse's teams. It's really hard.
- 37:06So those I mean, Rocky Lombardi. Oh yeah, probably.
- 37:09I mean, you know, he he lost on a very controversial in in state
- 37:14wrestling. People forget he was a great,
- 37:16great wrestler and his brother won it later.
- 37:19But that when Rocky shook hands to the official and, you know,
- 37:22in his own mind as a true wrestler would, you know, he
- 37:25felt like he should have gotten two more takedowns and it
- 37:26shouldn't have been close. And you know, that that's just a
- 37:29mark of a champion, you know what I mean?
- 37:31And but right now, my my one of my favorite kids is Trevion
- 37:34Carson, who's up in North Dakota State playing basketball.
- 37:37He was a former Valley kid and just really is is really shined
- 37:42and people probably never heard of him.
- 37:43They forget he led us to our won our first state title there.
- 37:46And and then there's kids like, you know, someone like it.
- 37:50There's this name is going to shock everybody, but like a a
- 37:52Pat Gray, a kid from Waukee that played three or four sports.
- 37:56I always enjoyed competing against him.
- 37:58I thought he was a great leader. And but you know, we've you
- 38:01know, all the guys that you're used to hearing about that.
- 38:04I think Alex Honnold stands out too, as well, and the kids I
- 38:07coached in in in youth teams growing up.
- 38:10Trevor Baumler's down at TCU pitching.
- 38:12He had a great year last year as a freshman.
- 38:14He's going to be a sophomore there.
- 38:15Cooper Nicholson is a junior out at North Carolina.
- 38:18You know those kinds of kids. You know, Brady Blake's going
- 38:23to, he's in junior college now. He's going to be at Creighton
- 38:25next year. Those those kids coaching
- 38:27baseball, being able to be a dad and still be able to do my job
- 38:30and coach on my son's team. Kid like George Nahas, who I
- 38:34know, you know, is a great kid too.
- 38:35All those kids are are are a lot of fun.
- 38:38I I would be I don't even know if I can list I the one I
- 38:41remember one of the great stories I remember is Jake
- 38:44Campos was walking down the hall at valley.
- 38:46He's going to like a like a advanced calculus class.
- 38:50You know, he's 68270 and I going to go to Iowa State and there's
- 38:53this little kid about he's about 100 lbs walking next to him.
- 38:56I, I, I saw him both said I don't this kid was in 7th grade.
- 39:00He was coming up to take the same class Jake was taking.
- 39:03That sounds, you know, and he's what, a better bodyguard than to
- 39:06have Jake Campos walking down the hall with you?
- 39:07Nobody's going to be messing with you, no doubt.
- 39:10Rosie, this has been a lot of fun.
- 39:11Thanks for hanging out with me today.
- 39:12A lot of great stories and I have a feeling we can do a lot
- 39:15more of this, certainly throughout the the coming weeks.
- 39:17Whenever Ken's gone, we'll invite you to come back and
- 39:20we'll tell some more stories. I'd love to do it.
