- 0:00Speaker 1: So how many pounds did you lose in the off season.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Yes, it was You know, we always hear these coaches
- 0:08Speaker 2: talk about all the team's gains and whatnot, but you
- 0:10Speaker 2: never hear the actual data. It was nice to hear
- 0:12Speaker 2: Matt Ruhle share the different data of the muscle added,
- 0:17Speaker 2: the fat pounds loss, the weight room gains, the mile
- 0:19Speaker 2: prower testing results. So you know they're where they should
- 0:24Speaker 2: be at this point. Now now you're in training camp.
- 0:27Speaker 2: But from all accounts, it was a good offseason for
- 0:30Speaker 2: this team, as it's been a long off season, as
- 0:33Speaker 2: we know, was springball ending on March twenty eighth.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You know, I guess now I Bozepic has a patch
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the Nebraska jerseys, we'll know what's going on. But
- 0:44Speaker 1: everybody was fat, Seano. I mean, we thought the diner
- 0:46Speaker 1: Ryola was fat, and he was fat. Offensive linemen were fat.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Everybody was fat, and I don't know why. It was
- 0:52Speaker 1: such a big mystery. We could all see it. What
- 0:55Speaker 1: were they doing last year? That I should say? What
- 0:57Speaker 1: did they do this year that they haven't been doing
- 0:59Speaker 1: in previous years in the offseason.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, they added six hundred and seventy seven pounds of
- 1:04Speaker 2: lean mass, and they lost one hundred and eighty eight
- 1:08Speaker 2: pounds of fat on the roster and there's one hundred
- 1:10Speaker 2: and it's one hundred and sixteen players on the team
- 1:13Speaker 2: right now, and I'm not sure if all the newcomers
- 1:16Speaker 2: are included in that data, but it is. It does
- 1:19Speaker 2: really jump out when you hear some of those numbers.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But I'm sure a lot of it is just maybe
- 1:24Speaker 2: some of the approach in the weight room, but obviously
- 1:26Speaker 2: the diet part of it. I mean, anybody that is
- 1:28Speaker 2: trying to lose weight knows it's not allays exercises. It's
- 1:31Speaker 2: more the diet and what you're doing. So I'm sure
- 1:34Speaker 2: they honed in on some nutritional things as well. And
- 1:37Speaker 2: then they've got the resources. With the amount of money
- 1:40Speaker 2: they spend in that area over there with Flick hospitality, Yeah, hey.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I got one hundred and sixty five million dollar training center.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You'd think they'd have some quality food in there. Wouldn't
- 1:49Speaker 1: just be fruit loops and applejacks all right. Now, let's
- 1:52Speaker 1: visit about the first press conference that Matt Rule offered.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He likes to talk, and that's probably be something Nebraska
- 2:01Speaker 1: shouldn't be doing right now. But what were your impressions
- 2:04Speaker 1: of his of his position given what we heard about
- 2:07Speaker 1: this time last year.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, honestly, there wasn't a lot of big,
- 2:12Speaker 2: grasping headlines that came out of I mean, the biggest
- 2:14Speaker 2: thing was the news of the hiring of David Benning,
- 2:17Speaker 2: who will leave the broadcast and bigger out wrap up
- 2:20Speaker 2: and join the football staff. But from a news perspective,
- 2:23Speaker 2: he continues to downplay the overall transition of the four
- 2:27Speaker 2: two five because they played so much foreman front last year.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Does not really see that as that big of a deal.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But yeah, other than that, there wasn't a lot of
- 2:38Speaker 2: just big headlines that came out of there. A couple
- 2:40Speaker 2: of injury things, but you know, Larry Miles is a
- 2:42Speaker 2: true freshman, will be out six to eight weeks as
- 2:45Speaker 2: a receiver. I mean, that's not a big story. Now,
- 2:47Speaker 2: this is the week where you'll start to probably see
- 2:50Speaker 2: a few more guys get banged up. They'll put on
- 2:51Speaker 2: full pads today for the first time, and then on
- 2:55Speaker 2: Friday and or excuse me, Saturday this week they'll they'll
- 2:58Speaker 2: probably have their first scrimming. So this will be kind
- 3:01Speaker 2: of more of a week or camp kind of locks
- 3:03Speaker 2: in and the players are still in the dorms for
- 3:06Speaker 2: a couple more days before they move out.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So let's visit about Damon Benning. This is one of
- 3:10Speaker 1: the higher profile former players. You hadn't played in thirty years,
- 3:14Speaker 1: but here's a guy who was the star high school
- 3:16Speaker 1: player up here in Omaha. He was an iback during
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Clinton Childs, Lawrence Phillips, Calvin Jones days. They've made
- 3:23Speaker 1: him director of player Development. Now what exactly does that mean?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Well, you know Gus Felder held the role before, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: you know he's a former Penn State player, and you're
- 3:34Speaker 2: just kind of a liaison to the players, a resource
- 3:37Speaker 2: to the players. You're someone that can deal with the kids,
- 3:41Speaker 2: talk with the young just be there as someone that
- 3:44Speaker 2: played the game that might know what a kid's going through,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and just be that there is just a support arm.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's a role that they've somewhat had always.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It's kind of obviously grown and gotten bigger and bigger
- 3:58Speaker 2: as the budgets have grown as well. Where I mean
- 4:00Speaker 2: ten years ago, this was not like a high paying
- 4:03Speaker 2: job you had on your deal, but now it's it's
- 4:06Speaker 2: one of them. It's a it's a solid role, and
- 4:08Speaker 2: Felder did it the last three years and bening Wal
- 4:11Speaker 2: step in this year.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So he'll essentially be kind of a counselor to the guys.
- 4:15Speaker 1: When a guy's having problems with his position coach, or
- 4:18Speaker 1: guys having problems with his girlfriend, or he's not doing
- 4:21Speaker 1: good in school, he he's got somebody that he can
- 4:23Speaker 1: relate to. And Damon does have those personal skills. He
- 4:26Speaker 1: is very relatable. He's got his own son on the team,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and this is somebody that that that hopefully will call
- 4:34Speaker 1: him a player and keep him focused on football in school.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Is that the job?
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no one here in the locker room and talking.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know he might be and you're at practice observing things,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and yeah, you're just doing a lot of other things
- 4:47Speaker 2: besides the behind the scenes. It's not a coaching job, obviously,
- 4:49Speaker 2: you're not out there drawing up plays and coaching. And
- 4:53Speaker 2: and I've known Damon and worked with them a long time.
- 4:55Speaker 2: That will be a big change. Number one, not being
- 4:57Speaker 2: involved in the broadcast. And we've broadcasted the high school
- 5:00Speaker 2: football championship games together for a good ten to fifteen
- 5:04Speaker 2: years almost, and then he's been on bigger out to
- 5:05Speaker 2: wrap up as one of our co hosts on the show,
- 5:10Speaker 2: and then obviously the Husker Radio broadcast, so that part
- 5:13Speaker 2: of it too will be a huge deal because David's
- 5:15Speaker 2: obviously made such a name doing the broadcast over the
- 5:19Speaker 2: last several years, then coaching as well, and the high
- 5:22Speaker 2: school ranks here at both Omaha North and Omaha Westside recently.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Before that, he was a head coach at Omaha Northwest
- 5:29Speaker 2: and an assistant coach before that at Burke.
- 5:30Speaker 1: All right, okay, big guy, thanks, we'll talk to you
- 5:33Speaker 1: on Wednesday. I've until we have game week. It'll be
- 5:35Speaker 1: shot on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays.
