Transcript
- 0:06[SPEAKER_02]: Do I then need to devote my life to proving to everybody the big foot exists?
- 0:11[SPEAKER_02]: Seems like once people have this encounter, their life becomes about that.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_02]: Why can't you just be like, oh, that's cool, I actually saw a big foot.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_02]: No, they're like, no, everybody has to believe.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know, I don't get that obsession happening there.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_05]: Because people are calling you crazy Carl.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_05]: Episode 1,120, we have Carl Mandrioli and Ben McCollough, backpacking and blisters.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're listening to the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_01]: We talk with adventurers from around the globe to bring you the inspiration and motivation you need to get started in the outdoors or to keep you moving if you're already there.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: Now here's your host, Kurt Lindville.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_05]: Hey friends, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_05]: I'm laughing right now because the two gentlemen can lay a call you gentlemen, is that all right?
- 0:59[SPEAKER_05]: Sure.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_05]: But the two gentlemen I have with me today are Ben and Carl from Backpacking and Blisters.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_05]: Another podcast, and if you don't know that you should go listen to it.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_05]: And yes.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, I'm being really candid.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_05]: They just said we don't know what we're going to talk about.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_05]: What are we going to do and I said I'm pressing record.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_05]: So Yeah, we're jumping into the season.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_05]: We don't know what we're going to talk about podcast Perfect.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a pros do it.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: I apparently were doing it wrong, but having outlines and structure.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's a kill.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Or no, we don't have to take notes.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_05]: I'm pretty lucy goosey and it gets me in trouble sometimes, but I know you guys can do this
- 1:36[SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to throw this out there.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_05]: I think it's great to let my listeners and viewers know about other podcasts because I trust them to respect the person who shared and to come back.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_05]: But the reality is, I think that if you take care of your listeners, then they appreciate that allegiance and they don't forget you.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_05]: And I understand everybody likes to listen to a variety of content.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_05]: So let's start by contrasting our two podcasts.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: similar to you, it's like a story-based podcast, but we say tips and tales with the sense of humor on the lighter side, and we try to be very inviting.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: We want people to kind of come out and enjoyness and adventure out there with us, and we don't want to make it seem as if, you know, we just want to make it seem accessible.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: So that's kind of the goal, but
- 2:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it feels like, I guess our podcast is getting big.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_02]: If Ben, if we're on, Adventure Sports Podcasts, it would be pretty big time, right?
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: We never know if anyone's listening because, you know, we go off comments and like some people be like, great.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: And that's it.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_05]: Well, and I don't mind sharing with you guys calls to action.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_05]: don't go really all that great the response rate is lower than you would expect and it's not that people aren't listening and they don't care because anytime you run into someone who does you know participate with the podcast there are always just like dude that is it's so helpful it's been this and it impacted me and my buddies and we did that and wow and thank you and
- 3:13[SPEAKER_05]: How come no one ever said that until we bumped into each other?
- 3:16[SPEAKER_05]: But anyway, I think it's real that you're making a difference.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_05]: It's just people feel, at least, I do all say this.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_05]: When I'm listening to you on your podcast, I feel like I know you, because I'm listening to you.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_05]: And after listening for so many episodes, ours, however long it takes,
- 3:44[SPEAKER_05]: But at the same time, you don't know me as a listener, and it's like a one-way friendship almost, a one-way intimacy Sometimes I feel that way with Carl, so I get it, I totally agree with you saying Everyone's trying to convince the giver But we didn't, we didn't get on together to talk about podcasting actually, did we?
- 4:06[SPEAKER_05]: We want to talk about it
- 4:11[SPEAKER_05]: We want to talk about adventure, we want to talk about how we can help people get out in the nature and you guys I've listened to a lot of your episodes over the years and you always seem to have
- 4:27[SPEAKER_05]: helpful anecdotes might be one way to say it right and you actually gave me a list of things we could talk about I'm gonna read the entire list because they're kind of funny.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I get for it.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_05]: Um eight life or death situations you will encounter that's one subundation point.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_05]: Yes The absolute best national parks for backpacking and I'm like really
- 4:50[SPEAKER_05]: Well, the reason is, I love to visit national parks, but if I want to go back packing, I go somewhere else.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_05]: There, fair.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_04]: And that's just me.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's just me.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's just me.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_05]: For full disclosure, I don't know if I can name eight, so how to intentionally sabotage a backpacking trip.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_05]: That's our favorite.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_05]: Maybe we should talk about that one because I have never approached it from that
- 5:18[SPEAKER_05]: cause some mayhem.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_05]: And then top 10 ways people die on the trail.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_05]: Really.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_02]: Which sounds.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_02]: Sounds more bid, but really it's in a strange way meant to be an encouraging topic because how you think or what you're afraid of out there is not on the list.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like your biggest fears, you know, like monsters getting you the bad guys, the villains out there.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then come capture like not on the list, not even the top 10.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_05]: Well, here's the funny thing.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_05]: I watch someone actually do the top 10 most dangerous animals in the world the other day And I don't know if it was accurate or not, but I think they're pretty close The most dangerous animal on earth is a mosquito Yeah, it kills more of the people on your list Every year in historically.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that's that's the one that people are like what mosquito?
- 6:03[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I don't want it to bite me But what that's what I should be worried about Probably a lot more than a mosquito than the bear
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_05]: Correct.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I can take a mosquito.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_02]: You can take one of the hazardous.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I can take a mosquito.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: I can't take a bear.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I work on that.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_05]: And full disclosure here, I have interacted with black bears more times than I can count literally and I'm not exaggerating and it's has to do with where we lived and a bunch of stuff like that, dozens of encounters.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_05]: But I've never had to deal with a grizzly so if I start talking about bears it's not a polar bear I'm talking about okay, that's a different animal.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_05]: It's not a codiac.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_05]: That's not what I'm talking about.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_05]: But anyway We've had we've had those experiences.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I've actually had some grizzly experiences to But you're right the mosquitoes is on the list for sure.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_02]: Well, not the number one way people die Related to creatures it is but in terms of it's like overall like likelihood of passing away it's not there.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_05]: May I guess what the number one is?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_05]: Uh, yeah, go ahead.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if I'm right.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_05]: But I think it's, I think it's exposure and hypothermia.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_02]: That's on the list.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but not number one.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_02]: Banking over the number one is.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Number one is it, uh, boredom on the trail.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I'm in the middle of the road.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that is correct.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_02]: We die of boredom.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's, um, it's falling.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_05]: actually.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, falling to your death, which could mean a lot of different things like when I go to you, somebody, and there's this massive waterfall, and people are swimming in a pool just above it, as they're about to get swept over.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, well, that's probably in the falling category versus the swift water category.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_05]: I did that once, but I wasn't swimming.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_05]: I was walking across the frozen ice above the waterfall.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_05]: Where was that?
- 7:57[SPEAKER_05]: That was in Rocky Mountain National Park,
- 8:04[SPEAKER_05]: almost died guys my guardian angel worked over time I I totally started sliding over the waterfall and oh really I saw a little nub of a boulder like a half inch tall sticking up out of the ice and I dove for it and I grabbed it with my fingertips and that's why I'm alive to talk to you today.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: I had a near-death experience with the waterfall as well.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: That's that's crazy.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Did yours.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: Mine involved just literally falling into the waterfall and it involved a search and rescue you having to rescue me out of the waterfall before I got swept over the engine.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was your 70 falls, which has three drops and like it was in between the second and third drop.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: So, or first.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: Why did you do what we like jumping on purpose or did you just
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, if you just want to jump into a waterfall, then you're like, do the last couple of weekends or something, it's right.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: I will find you, stay alive, and then you just jumped off the cliff.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, so that the title of this podcast is things not to do.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_05]: We found it.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and we can talk about sabotaging bad packing trips that still qualifies with that title, right?
- 9:12[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think so.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_05]: There is.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_05]: Let's see, one more topic of conversation is, improve your next adventure by bringing these ridiculous items.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_05]: And I actually heard one of the podcasts you guys did where you were talking about this kind of stuff.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_05]: And that was very helpful.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay, what's the most ridiculous I'm e-bring you're out on the trail?
- 9:32[SPEAKER_05]: Are the most ridiculous item I bring?
- 9:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_05]: Boy, I try not to do that.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_05]: I usually word that question.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_05]: You were never ready for that.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_05]: The way I word it is, what is the one thing that you take that no one would expect you to take that you actually want to continue taking on the true.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_05]: That's usually.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_05]: No, I, uh,
- 9:54[SPEAKER_05]: I've always answered that.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_05]: It pretty obviously.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_05]: I don't like to skimp on my sleeping pad.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_05]: So I'll carry some extra weight.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's good.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: You want good sleep, but that's less fun than our answers.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_05]: I would say, like, in one other thing I bring this is it is ridiculous.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_05]: I like to bring way too big of a knife.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: All you need is a pin knife.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_02]: Do you just need a tiny little way or where you have it?
- 10:19[SPEAKER_05]: The knife?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_05]: I usually hang it on the outside of my backpack.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_05]: But, I like bushcraft.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Is it strapped in, Typh?
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm sorry.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: Ben, say it again.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: Is it, is your knife leg just dangling?
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Or do you have it like strapped in, strapped in?
- 10:36[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, it's, it's strapped in enough that it doesn't bother me.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, but as particular you know that the main reason is because I like bushcraft and I like something that I can actually Uses a larger tool, but it's totally unnecessary on the trail.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_05]: All you really need is just an inch and a half Of cutting blade.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_05]: That's it.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_05]: Maybe not even that much.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm bringing one.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: No, you don't.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's in my first time.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_02]: I just got back from a 10 day backpacking trip with some heavy miles.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think I, I used it all the time.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a waste of one ounce.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, house.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_05]: Keep in mind, guys, that Travis and I owned 180 tack.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_05]: And we sold natural fuel backpacking stoves.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_05]: And so if you couldn't split a wet stick, you couldn't burn it.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_05]: So that was another reason I took something big enough to split small sticks with because you can always have a life saving fire.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_05]: If you can split sticks.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_05]: And your little one inch blade struggles with that.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: It does.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_05]: You could carve down any some dry wood, but it's hard.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: But you're talking about like hobbies in the back country.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: You're talking about bush crafting, like you're investing your weight in something you're used to have fun outside, which is totally a gym.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_02]: And where our ridiculous items are like we went to Olympic National Park, which is in the Northeast.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's in Washington State, known for big foot encounters.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: And one of our buddies packed in a full big foot costume.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: and then merge in the forest.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_02]: So that's a lot heavier than whatever your knife is, or one of the things you bring it on group trips, especially if you're bringing folks that we don't know very well, is I'll bring this like felt thing that I can hang up and make a jeopardy board out of it, and we'll play Jeopardy and kind of, yeah, they get to pick categories like one of the questions.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_05]: You're trying to save Ben's life.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_05]: because he gets bored to death all the time.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_05]: It's all about me.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_05]: That's what I always try.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_05]: How can we keep Ben entertained?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_05]: You know, guys, I had to tell you this.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_05]: I used to take young people, teenagers into the woods and group trips.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_05]: And I loved it.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_05]: Absolutely love it.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_05]: No, young people out there keep doing it.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_05]: It's fantastic.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_05]: But I took a bunch of city kids who had never been back packing.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_05]: And when it got dark, we were way up in the wilderness.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_05]: glorious location and when it got dark they got nervous because they were outside in the woods in the dark for the first time in their lives probably most of them right and so when teenagers get nervous what do they do they make a lot of noise the carry on they start cracking jokes and teasing each other and it got louder and louder and louder and louder and I was like man they are missing this moment they're having fun it probably was a jeopardy game they were having fun
- 13:26[SPEAKER_05]: But they were missing the moment, and I said, okay, okay, you have to experience this.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_05]: So we separated into groups and spread out a little bit.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_05]: I said, I want you to just be quiet for a moment and look at the stars, listen to the night sounds, see if you can encounter what nature is doing around you.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_05]: And when they finally got quiet, which took a lot of doing, they were so uncomfortable with this.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_05]: the the water on the high cliffs on the precipitous mountains around us started freezing and triggering rock slides.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_05]: And so we were listening to massive rock slides come crashing down the mountains off in the distance.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_05]: And they couldn't even hear that because they were making so much racket.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_05]: But then suddenly their eyes opened up and they're like, oh, you know, and they started to have a nature experience in rock slides calm them down.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_02]: And well, we weren't under the rocks like, I mean, well, yeah.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, wait, can you do an impression of yourself, trying to get them to be quiet?
- 14:27[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, are you like, everybody quiet?
- 14:31[SPEAKER_02]: Or the whistle?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like, enough out of you.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, whistle.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what'd you do?
- 14:35[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I, so I've done multiple things, and I'm no good at it.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_05]: I used to be a teacher as well, and I wasn't good at it, didn't either, but if you're in front,
- 14:49[SPEAKER_05]: You can just quit talking.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, yeah, and if they have any mode to come of respect, they will eventually quiet down and say, why are you not talking?
- 14:58[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they get so.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that actually is a... I'm laughing because it didn't work for our jeopardy game, Karl's not talking.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they don't.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: I just kept on arguing.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: Like, stare at them, you're like, hey, try to play the game.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_05]: That's right.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_02]: We're trying to have fun guys.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_05]: The whistle, though, Ben, I think the whistle's pretty good.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because it's a different kind of noise.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_05]: You're not trying to scream over anybody.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_05]: It's just you make a noise and they look like what was that?
- 15:27[SPEAKER_05]: You say, hey, wait.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_05]: I've got something.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_05]: I've got something right here.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Any chance that whistle created the mudslide?
- 15:36[SPEAKER_05]: Well, it would be possible.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_05]: We could trigger avalanches and everything else.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_05]: You never know, but It was a beautiful experience and you know what the kids were very very uncomfortable But isn't that why we go back packing and go into the wilderness?
- 15:48[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, it becomes our home It's my home.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_05]: I'm sure it's your home, but at first it's so we can learn we can have a different experience I mean, people are talking about going to Mars.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_05]: They've not even been into the woods here yet You want to have a different experience going counter nature
- 16:05[SPEAKER_02]: Are you anti-mars explorations?
- 16:08[SPEAKER_05]: No, I'm all for it.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_05]: But I do believe it's a suicide mission and I don't want to volunteer anyone for it.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_02]: Are you familiar with the face on Mars and what are your thoughts on that?
- 16:21[SPEAKER_05]: What do they call it?
- 16:22[SPEAKER_05]: Caledonia or something?
- 16:23[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_04]: You think it's not gonna happen?
- 16:26[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_05]: I think it's a trick of a light on a natural feature and it's really cool.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_05]: You know?
- 16:33[SPEAKER_05]: What about the pyramid in Antarctica?
- 16:36[SPEAKER_05]: Have you looked at that one?
- 16:37[SPEAKER_02]: I got to look at that one.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_05]: It's very confusing until the sun changes its angle and then it's a mountain again.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_02]: The one on Mars they re-released a picture.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_02]: They said that they had a picture from a different angle.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_02]: Um, that reveals it's not really a face, but then NASA never actually like release that picture, they just set it and then later they release the same picture and it had been like Visually manipulated with a photo shop and text proved that it was visually manipulated so just something about and it looked just like Ronald Reagan
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is why we usually have an outline curve so we don't go off on these tages.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_05]: Well, you guys gave me an outline more than we could cover in five shows.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: Easily.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_02]: Not, we could just give you top of ideas, but yeah, we had a CIA guy on our show recently and he was talking about the most difficult places, or the most dangerous places to go backpacking in the world, the most dangerous country specifically.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_05]: and we were asking about all this conspiracy theory stuff so yeah yeah if you want more more secrets like you can dig into that episode that was going well i have fun with that stuff but i'm i'm not someone who just like i'm not the true believer but i think it is so fun to explore and here's here's my perspective we'll go back to big but you're already brought him up yeah and her they they're actually two genders of big feet
- 18:03[SPEAKER_05]: I would be so happy, I think it would be such a glorious thing if someone had absolute proof.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_05]: If we could say there was a giant bipedal primate that was so elusive that it managed
- 18:24[SPEAKER_05]: truly convincing way with all of the millions of people that are traits and through the woods with high quality cameras these days strapped to their hip.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_05]: Everybody has one.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_05]: Where's big foot?
- 18:35[SPEAKER_05]: I want big foot to be real because I think it would be great for nature to kind of say, hey, look what I can do and you can't.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I think it'd be awesome.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think so too.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: I will say this though.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: So I was in Sequoia National Park a couple of weeks back and we were finishing I was with my wife we were finishing up the trail and in the parking lot next to our car was a black bear.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and my wife's
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, send my panicking, but I have a unhealthy lack of fear of wild animal.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, I'm going to get up and just think of black bear.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, Jessica, my wife.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, get the camera out, film me.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go shoot this black bear away.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_02]: And so then I go and I chase the black bear off and, you know, like, like, bravado fashion.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: And then I was like, all right, let's check out what footage you got.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: And she's like, oh, I got, I guess I turned the camera on at the beginning, but right.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought I didn't record, but I hit, when I hit record is actually hitting stop.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: She got none of it.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think in the moment, if you're face art,
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: some sort of intense situation like it's not as easy as you think to turn that camera on.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_05]: Well, if Bigfoot walks up to me in the woods, I'm gonna say, dude, I've been waiting for you for so long, sit down by the fire.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_05]: Let's have a conversation.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: That would that would work.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_05]: And actually, I've had similar situations walking up on people in the woods.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_05]: I wasn't sure if they were big feet or not, but anyway, they invited me to sit down and have a conversation too.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_05]: I appreciated that.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_02]: People that were dressed as Bigfoot invited you to have a conversation.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_05]: No, they were just hairy guys.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_05]: I was hairy.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_02]: I was hairy.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_02]: I was hairy.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: Here's okay.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_02]: Here's what I don't understand about it, because we have a lot of fun time at Bigfoot periodically.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: So if I'm out on the trail and I see Bigfoot, like I truly like that is Bigfoot undoubtedly, whether I get one camera or not, like I'm convinced I just saw Bigfoot.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's that's cool.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_02]: Do I then need to devote my life to proving to everybody that big foot exists?
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like once people have this encounter, their life becomes about that.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_02]: Why can't you just be like, oh, that's cool.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: I actually saw a big foot.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: No, there are like, no, everybody has to believe.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't get that obsession happening that.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because people are calling you crazy, Carl, literally calling her.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: I would tell him, I'd be like, yeah, whatever.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was just joking about that.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: We have the guest on that thought she saw it, remember?
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: She was, yeah, and she called her crazy.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, she was.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I might have, but she was like, I went back.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't even have anything to prove.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, we totally people get kind of crazy with that.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_05]: Well, the ones that I am most impressed with are the ones who don't want to talk about it.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_05]: Never wanted to talk about it.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_05]: There's like I had an experience and if you draw out out of them You're like, well, that's pretty weird They it's hard to find those people because they're not talking about it.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_05]: You don't know but I've had experiences in the woods that I can't explain have you guys You've had like weird experiences.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're all explainable though I don't know what now you got us curious what like give us one of those what's a size hairy men What have you
- 21:37[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, here's one that I was was delightful and my son tried to explain it the other day and he's probably right and I'm disappointed because I loved it so much We're at a high-alpine lake.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_05]: We'd just a day hike trip in so we were probably five or six miles in and this this beautiful pristine mirror of the lake would suddenly get little ripples
- 22:03[SPEAKER_05]: that would, would shoot across the lake at a pretty good speed, like a meter a second.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, pretty good.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_05]: Pretty pretty fast.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_05]: And they were leaving a wake on the water just like an eagle that dragged its foot across the surface.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_05]: The thing was, there was no eagle.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_05]: There was no wind to cause it.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_05]: There was no bug on the surface to cause it.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_05]: And it wasn't a fish.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_05]: And I, in my mind, I was watching Fantasia, you know, the Walt Disney film, and I was watching those, those freezing ferries that would drag their toe across the water and cause it to freeze and for all the crystals to form.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_05]: That's what it looked like, and I thought I don't know what this is, but it's super cool in some magic moment for me because it's mysterious.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_05]: Now is there an explanation?
- 22:50[SPEAKER_05]: I could probably come up with a dozen.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_05]: But my son, who's a amateur entomologist finally said, no, there's a water insect that's under the surface that skims the surface tension as it shoots across.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember what it was.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: Just ruined it for you.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, it's a bug.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_02]: Of course it's a bug.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_02]: But it was also a magic moment.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: So I was thinking more lake monster to be honest, but this was visible lake monster.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_05]: Interesting.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_05]: What about you, Ben?
- 23:21[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_05]: If you have moment in the words that you could not, you could not explain.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I can explain, but, you know, we went on a backpack and trip together, I was saying, well, this is like weird encounters, and we found poop on the trail, and one of the guys decided to pick it up in a bag and examine it.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's probably the one I can't explain, this is why I didn't do that and ship it back home for his lab to check it out.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, we call those smart nimbills.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_05]: Have you heard this one though that's what you do with your city slicker when you take them into the woods and they see something the trail They what is that you see what those are smart and pills because what do you mean?
- 24:05[SPEAKER_05]: I say well, we take them and it makes us smarter Eat two and then And so if you can convince them to sample the merchandise and he goes that that tastes like crap Then you say see you're getting smarter already Have you have you have you convinced three did you that before?
- 24:25[SPEAKER_05]: Hmm, I don't think, no, I have, but not with SCAT.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, okay, but I have done it.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_05]: Have you ever eaten a green persimmon?
- 24:37[SPEAKER_05]: I have not, though.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_05]: That's the worst thing in the world, okay?
- 24:41[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, a green person, and you have to be in a place where wild persimmons grow.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_05]: But once they're right, they're delicious.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_05]: We make cookies out of them, right?
- 24:49[SPEAKER_05]: So everyone's heard of the persimmons, and you, so here these fruit on this tree, you pick one, you say, oh, look, it's a persimmon tree, persimmons are delicious.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_05]: You pop it in your mouth, and you try to just keep a straight face because it is the most disgusting experience.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_05]: You've ever had.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, but technically edible still, though.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I wouldn't swallow it.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_05]: It's a little too green.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_05]: But poop's kind of edible.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_05]: Anyway, the whole point is, if you can keep a straight enough face that they try it to, yeah, you have arrived.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_05]: It is definitely a smart nimpill.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: Well, here's how we do it, because we, I think we've done a couple episodes on like trail pranks.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_02]: And so our, our way is you bring in some like junior
- 25:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then you hike ahead and put them in a pile and they resemble like deer and elk scat.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then you're the one that eats it and you're like, I think I know what kind of scat this is.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_02]: You're kind of convinced the newbie.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_02]: And then you eat it and then it grosses them out.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: And then you can decide whether or not to tell them whether that it's just candy.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_02]: But all right.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_05]: The only problem is when you forget what pile, you left the junior bat.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's how you got to be kind of.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_05]: And so Carl, based on that, what is your trail name?
- 26:05[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have a trail name.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_02]: I'll tell you the close of come.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not a trail name guy.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like we did this whole thing about like I'm a stick in the mud with trail names.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_02]: I just think it's weird like when people are like hey I you know like I just was hiking with cave man yesterday and then fire lips like interrupted us doing this and like I don't know how many people are like I don't know just weird.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's a weird cultural thing, but I
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: I was on the Colorado Trail, and we were doing what's called the collegiate loop, which is like a loop around the collegiate peaks in Central Colorado, and it's kind of like an abbreviated version of the Colorado Trail.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_02]: And so, but on one of the sides of the loop, we ended up hiking with a group of throughhikers, and so we were with them for a number of days, and they all had trail names and whatever.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_05]: So we were just a group of five dudes and so we get ended up getting called the dad's and that was funny That's the closest thing I got The dad's well, I think I'm a bit older than you are Carl by a bit and yeah I managed to get someone to call me uncle instead of dad and that was a big win
- 27:08[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think you're that much older than her.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I'm 23, how old are you?
- 27:16[SPEAKER_05]: I'm pushing 50.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_05]: Well, it's all kinds of fun.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_05]: Let's go ahead and talk about eight life or death situations that you will encounter because that's an interesting topic.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_05]: Maybe you can help some people out.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_02]: Eight light.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_02]: You want to go first, Ben?
- 27:34[SPEAKER_02]: You got one.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_02]: Personal experience.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: of eight encounters.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't have we going off the list or you want to use your personal one, you can take it from the last year choice.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so my mind is I said to boredom, but in all actuality for me, it's just getting lost and panicking, I think would be one of the encounters.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: when you get lost people just start freaking out rather than just take the pause and think about where they're at, what they can do, slow everything down and we start to panic, that's when we start making mistakes, go the wrong way, lose sense of direction.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_02]: And before Ben continues, I would like to pre-apologize for all of Ben's answers.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's about to share because they've been unvetted and I don't really know if those are live or not situations.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like, how is that life of death people have low-keyed or beacons?
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: They can just press the red button, right?
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: No, I didn't.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: I had to find my way out of a trail and scale down mountains almost fell.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_02]: He tells us about that story and how did you almost die?
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so we got up.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: We were hiking in El Paso.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, you can see the town.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: So we're not far from town.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: But we got all the way up in the trail just disappeared because it was shale.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so we couldn't go back down because it was sketchy.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: So we're out of the panicking.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: We just were like, let's follow the riverbed that was dry.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: And it was kind of the better of the situations.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we didn't have self-service.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: We just decided to come down.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: But we had to...
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: like kind of waterfalls that probably exist at some point.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, kind of where this gets your moments of our talk.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_02]: You weren't really lost if you're, you're like semi-loss, but the day was, you're off trail trying to do dangerous maneuvers.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you couldn't go back down the way you came.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: You had to find out how to get there.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: And you could see the town, but how do you get there?
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so... Or you could just press red button and the helicopter.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have the red button.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: I know, like, you carry it all the time.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: You press it when you're at Costco, you know, and you just want to find your wife and get out of there.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know... Red buttons on your phone now, buddy.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think you can press red button.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all right.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: You do yours.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_00]: Let's tear apart your your counter.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: You can tear apart.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: Well, have you had a little curve.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_02]: Have you had that experience?
- 29:45[SPEAKER_02]: Is that is that a legitimate answer by Ben?
- 29:47[SPEAKER_05]: You can be the judge lost the trail.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_05]: Didn't know how to get back.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_05]: Couldn't go back to what you came.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_05]: You know, down is a lot harder than up.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_05]: And I have been there.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_05]: I I was free climbing a cliff in the winter time.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_05]: and I ran out of handholds and decided that without a rope it wasn't worth it so I started to try to go back and realize all the handholds are like the one way kind the two they're not really there in the other direction and there's ice and my fingers are freezing and I've lost my sense of touch and I'm like I can't even feel a rock anymore and there's a gal with me and I said stop around in the snow because it was a boulder field
- 30:29[SPEAKER_05]: It's a stomper out on the snow, I need a flat place where I won't break my leg because I didn't want to go between two boulders and snap, you know, that would be good.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_05]: And so she tromped around on the snow and I tried to down climb until I fell and then I launched myself to the place that she pointed at.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, how did you land like you land like on your in your life?
- 30:51[SPEAKER_05]: I've zoomed like yeah, on my legs my feet and I like twisted my knee and got up and hike down I was okay, but I've been there bin where down doesn't work anymore.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_05]: So I I say that's legit.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: We we actually learned about a solution for that if you have that.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: like experience again.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_02]: So if you ever watched the movie for uh first blood with uh Sylvester's alone jump on the tree.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, we had one of your- one of your guests on the show.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_02]: You had Moose Muttlo on.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: Um the search and rescue guy.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: We had him evaluate movie scenes.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: We actually haven't released this episode yet.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, and so he said that that one was actually like a legitimate like you probably get more marked up than what happened to- to Rando, but that was a legitimate way to get down.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 31:34[SPEAKER_05]: Well, there were no trees handy, but I would have tried it.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_05]: I have done that before.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: I got one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one,
- 31:56[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I would say it this way I've lived at Altitude for over 20 years and if you're going to be a fair weather hiker You've given up maybe two-thirds of your year.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_05]: Mmm, gotcha, that's fair, yeah, you know, so, but
- 32:12[SPEAKER_05]: as a full explanation.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_05]: I also started taking my sons and nephews and whoever wanted to go on winter camping trips and snowkaving trips and stuff like that.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_05]: So we did quite a bit of winter things just to see what it was like and learn the skill set that keeps you alive.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_05]: Which by the way, I said exposure in hypothermia.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_05]: Remember?
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's my winter camping.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: We admitted to 9 o'clock and then burnt all our clothes, pillows, shoes and more.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_05]: We're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood, we're out of firewood
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and that takes me to my life or desiguation.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's your thing, Storm.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's the one because I've experienced this three times now.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: And really, you're very unlikely to get struck by lightning or much less die by lightning.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's like eight people per year across the country that the die by lightning.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_02]: So it's unlikely.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: But I've been climbing a mountain pass.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_02]: as the storms rolling in and I'm typically part of a group and there's somebody with me that is is hiking at a much slower pace and they do not feel the intensity of the storm coming in right and there's nothing that I can say to motivate them to take faster uh... there's times when they'll strip reject me from like trying to take you know gear out of their pack whatever they're like I'm fine I'm like no you're gonna die because there's lightning coming and we got to get over the past and there's a little bit more
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can picture Carl in them going at it.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's Carl's trying to take his backpack and throw it off the cliff.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it comes at that point.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes it's just like a quick storm whatever.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_02]: But sometimes like if you decide, look, you're just not going to make this pass.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: We got a hunker down.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: You could be hunker down for hours.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: And that's it.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: You never know.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: If you get miles to go before camp,
- 34:12[SPEAKER_02]: that's not a good investment in time.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm always on the like I calculated risks I where I want to like go for the past and I found myself in the situation three times most recently just a few weeks ago and I don't know that I have a good solution for it other than just like let's just get after and go everything I've tried it like motivating taking gear away trying to explain the situation like none of that works they just kind of slowly plot towards the past and I just like to put me in danger where you guys think
- 34:41[SPEAKER_05]: That's dangerous.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_05]: That's dangerous.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_05]: I've interviewed a few guides recently and one of the things that they talk about is how to make the group decision and to call it, you know, because people disagree.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_05]: People have different modes of wanting to encounter things and tolerances for risk.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm like, yeah, that's a skill set to be able to call it and say, hmm, we're not doing this.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I can't get you fast enough over the ridge, so we're going to go back and find a safe place to enjoy ourselves.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not a strong enough leader to be the guy.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, I'm not the type of guy who's like, you either hike and twice the speed, or we're going to go dive in these bushes.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_02]: Decide now.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like I'm not saying that.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_02]: What?
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard because when you're with adults, like, you know, you kind of... Yeah.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_00]: feel like they could take care of themselves.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's some point, but you're also responsible.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really weird dynamic that we talk about quite a bit on the podcast with.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like it does make their own decisions.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_02]: And you can say it like, look, I'm calling it.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_02]: This is, this is not going to happen.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_02]: Let's be safe.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_02]: And they could say, no, I'm going to keep going because I don't believe you.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_05]: No controller that.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_05]: Well, Ben.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_05]: You said that you guys have talked about it quite a bit on the podcast.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_05]: It most recently when we talked about it on the Adventure Sports podcast, it came back to establishing the decision matrix before you start the hike.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_05]: That's like I'm with adults here, we can all make our own decisions, but if we disagree what are we going to do and you have the conversation before you start.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because it's not embarrassing at the trailhead.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_05]: Right, it's embarrassing on the mountain.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Carl ran into that where, like, I think it would trip it was, but where they wanted to go find a river, something, and basically half the group wanted to split and have a mutiny.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's the kind of leader I am where people with some people having mutiny.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_05]: Well, there's something to it.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_05]: And, you know, I've been blessed in that I've rarely worked with a group where we came into that like the real strong tension.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_05]: There was one climb where we're trying to traverse a ridge.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_05]: And there was a newbie that didn't know how to do it.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_05]: And he he got terrified and he a grown man started crying.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, shaking and crying and trembling and his buddy the one who brought him Let's go.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_05]: What are you done?
- 37:04[SPEAKER_05]: You know calling around and we can do this and I finally had to call it and it was very uncomfortable But I said listen You are up for it.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_05]: He's not you're experienced.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_05]: He's not I'm not risking his life for you.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_05]: I'm going back
- 37:22[SPEAKER_05]: OK, so the whole group went back and he could have kept going, but it would have been very unwise for him to do so, but you know, I did call it and it wasn't a complete mutiny.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_04]: But.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_05]: This was.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: The only time I came was we had a mission trip and I was like, you guys are on your own, you know, but we got the airport.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was the last day.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, you guys might miss your flight finding a bathroom, but I got too far as I could.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: So they might still be in Miami for a lot now, you know, there you go, right?
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like you're a pretty good leader there, Cura on the trips and a lot of the I the ones for my list are from years ago when we're still trying to figure out How to be good leaders on trips and so and a lot of times so one of the guys we invited just has a problem with authority And it's not even that anybody's all that authoritative on the trip It's just like he just knows better than everybody else, so yeah, and so a lot of the problems that we've found like
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: Can it kind of be sourced back to this one person so like Ben mentioned the mutiny trip like he was a guy who's like I feel comfortable trying to lead the group into a dangerous situation away from the game plan And so and so once we figure that out what you're saying is the solution is like you just get ever to agree And so one of his problems was he would like intentionally leave gear behind like critical gear And he's like, I don't think I need this like what critical gear
- 38:44[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, it was different every time, but like the most common one was the the rain jacket like I don't think it's going to rain, so I'm not going to want to carry this weight and then he struggled with hypothermia one year and so so I think my solution was like a look if this guy ever comes again, he's probably not going to come but if he does I'm going to say like you have to adhere to the gear list.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_02]: and we're going to do a gear check at the trailhead.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_02]: And if you're missing something critical, that's fine.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_02]: We'll drive the two hours back to town to get what you need.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to send my erect the first day and I'm going to hold your hand the whole way on the trail.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's awesome.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_02]: So that's anyway.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's kind of how that goes.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 39:30[SPEAKER_02]: like you forgot or you've lost a critical item.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_02]: So we were just mentioned the gear list and you'd be surprised that even with the gear list, people literally just checking things off as they go for whatever reason, like really important items don't always make their way to camp.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_02]: Things like so we've had multiple guys not have sleeping bags when they get to camp.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_02]: I had this when I figured out the trehub, but like I had my all of my backpack and clothing packed in a duffel bag,
- 39:59[SPEAKER_02]: before a trip to involve my family and my daughter who was a lot younger this time uh... was going through the car and she's like uh... i don't know what this death of bags here for and so she unbeknownst to me yanks it out so we should drive the whole way boy and i have my work clothes ready to go back back in and so for whatever reason like i don't know your kids can pull a sleeping bag out like to make a blanket for like oh this is really warm and cozy like you don't know why it comes out but for whatever reason we've had people not have sleeping pads not you know not have that insulation has sleeping bags critical items not making their way
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: I was 10 pulls, we went that winter camping trip.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't have 10 pulls because somebody didn't pack the tent with the tent poles, and we didn't check before we went.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: We just like, it feels like it's all there.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, it's two stupid mistakes, yeah.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_02]: To that point, they had a backpack and guide.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like, he's a guide and he went on our show and he split the tent between him and his buddy and his buddy at some point on the trail like the tent poles maybe got caught in bushes.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_02]: They got yanked off his pack.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: They write the camp and a dangerous spot without the ability to put a tent up.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_02]: That's that's that's that's my next one my list.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you know one thing that we usually take is a lightweight emergency blanket tarp And the reason for that is if the tint doesn't work you can just breathe out yourself Yeah inside of that tarp and you'll get through the night it can save your life and it does a way much so why not have a backup right?
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right Because you don't want the wait
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a firefighter.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: We got to fire camp at like three, three o'clock in the morning and we all set up our tents and we look over and there's three guys cuddling together Just in the, and just right outside the woods, I'm like those guys are like I can't breathe in.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: I need my tent.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: I need my tent.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_00]: I want to feel safe Like that little bit of screen just makes you feel so much safer from, you know, Baratax or birds or whatever.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_02]: So this is the first fire-keep you warm though.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we're far away from that.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_05]: Just Dylan to hike closer to the fire.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, right?
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: So much better there, right?
- 41:58[SPEAKER_00]: We did that the next time.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like we got out there, my daughter who's on the fire department with us got cold and we just pushed her towards the embers and we're like, yeah, just hanging out here.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_02]: So we pushed her towards the fire.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's good.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_02]: Good father.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, we did say embers.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's good.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: But that's on my list is the heat stress because that's how my idea with a lot is Yeah, I can deal with cold, but heat I just I feel like I didn't ever get acclimated even living in a past so and you know 110 degree weather will come up I'm in Northern California now And we'll do a hike even a day hike just for a mile up a thousand foot elevation gain and some days I can just crush us where we can
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: We can usually do that hike in like 24 minutes and some days it's like 42.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, you know, is that your next life situation is heat stress?
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's heat stress.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: That is mine.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: I just said that.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: I said my next on my list is heat stress.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, you're saying it's causing you to double your hiking time.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because it just slows me down like I'm taking breaks in that shade.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_00]: We did a hike in too song with my different daughter.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is father of the year award here.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_00]: I showed this on the podcast, but we didn't we didn't check out the hike ahead of time.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: We're just like, oh, it's a simple route.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: We saw three year old on the trail.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think they only went like 10 feet in.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it got 117 degrees in dicey because there was no shade.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: We had one water bottle, a small water bottle between the both of us.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I wound up running ahead to see how close we were to the car.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_00]: Thankfully, we were to close.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: Got the car started.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: My friend quick ran with my daughter.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_00]: We went to Walmart and threw in one of those ice chests that holds all the ice.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, that for me, I think he is where I just, I don't think of it, you know, it's just like we're gonna hike in it, but how do you prepare, how do you worry, you know, do the right things, hydrate ahead of time is probably the thing I don't do.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I'm big on hydration, but guys, I have spent most of my adventuring at altitude, like I said, cold weather is my domain.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_05]: and I drove through needles on the way to California and the temperature is 119 on the car thermometer and I was terrified.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_05]: I just thought if someone dropped me in the middle of the Colorado Rockies in the winter time, I'd be okay.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_05]: You know, throw me out of a helicopter.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_05]: I would make it back.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_05]: But you throw me out in the desert out here.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_05]: I don't think I'd last 24 hours.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_05]: I do not know what to do.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: I am so ignorant.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_00]: Dig a hole maybe, and just wait, I don't know what to say.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_05]: Thank you so much.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_05]: Well, heat stress is terrifying, Ben.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_05]: I feel like you can't escape it.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_05]: You can get warm in the cold, but how you get cool in the heat if you don't have
- 44:46[SPEAKER_05]: What do you do?
- 44:47[SPEAKER_02]: That's why he threw his kid and like one of his ice cabinets it stores all the bags of ice like that's what he's talking about like he put her inside that ice closet Right, I love that's for real.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and I guess you know on the the PCT There are places where you could get into that kind of trouble.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_05]: I think I think on the continental divide trail.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_05]: It's very unlikely You could probably get heat exhaustion though pretty easily on the Appalachian trail
- 45:14[SPEAKER_05]: It depends on the part of country you're in.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, even without heat, you can still get the dehydration and it turns into heat, you know.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: We interviewed Jeff Peltier, Peltier.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: Peltier.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: Peltier, and he did that.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: He did what he was running through and 100 in what 10 degree weather.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_00]: And he had a team with him.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_00]: And he said he had a drink.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: Two liters of water plus all the salt stuff because it was evaporating.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, per hour, just to stay hydrated.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_02]: Right, so if you're talking about getting dropped in the middle of the desert without a water source, yeah, like that's not what you want that's terrifying, it's not like it's an area, we don't like that scenario.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_02]: Here, I'll throw a scenario at you at both of you, you tell me how you'd handle this one, because I think there is a solution to this one.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_02]: But if you go back packing long enough, mountaineer and whatever, and you're in the mountains, not even the mountains, but just you're just out in the wild.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_02]: At some point, you're going to have an animal take your food.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_02]: Get your food, eat your food.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_02]: It may not be a bear.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_02]: It might be a critter, but at some point, you're going to have your animals get a hold of your food.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_02]: And if you're far away from, you know, civilization, trailhead, whatever, then you're stuck with that food.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_02]: Now, it's going to take a long time to dive starvation,
- 46:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's still, it's a, it's a critical situation where you've got to exert yourself very, you know, hard to get those miles back to the trailhead.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_02]: So what do you do if you find yourself without food because of the animals?
- 46:41[SPEAKER_00]: Ah, is there four people in the trip?
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: Because three might make it back.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_02]: These assumptions that nobody has the food that you have very little food at this point.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_02]: Regardless of the group size.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, Kurt, you go first.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_05]: Well, we were, I don't know, like four days into a backpacking trip that was so remote that we didn't see another soul for eight days, but one morning, the bear had left his scat right under the bear line, and I was like, wow.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_05]: I'm glad we put that up correctly, you know, because I thought it's a four day hike out of here.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_05]: And we would have been in that very situation, no food.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_05]: Obviously, you can make it day after day after day on water alone, if you move slowly and take care of yourself.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_05]: But it's hard to exert yourself without fuel to burn.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_05]: So I taught my kids wild edible plants.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_05]: and we know how to fish without a hook.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_05]: And there are ways.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_05]: And we've sampled things as we hike through the woods just to make sure we remember what's going on.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_05]: And one of the games we play.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_05]: is I'll just say okay how many edible plants do you see just wherever we're standing at the time and usually we can come up with six or seven oh nice wherever we are in the woods that's not in the middle of the desert at 120 degrees though yeah yeah I thought this is where the smartening pill came in this is all they can go with the smartness yeah you and your family are well prepared that I am yeah I wouldn't assume that they're near me at any point so I can't even identify poison
- 48:21[SPEAKER_05]: Well, you got to be careful right because there are a lot of lookalikes and that's that's a little bit terrifying.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_02]: So I rule a thumb when I start shoving plants on my mouth as if it tastes like poison just spit it out.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if that's a good.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_02]: Stop.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_02]: But that's.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_05]: So I'm thinking about Ratatouille at this point.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_05]: Good, good, good, good, spit it out for you much.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_05]: We're gonna watch.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you do small quantities, a carl, then it's better.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if it's poisonous, it's adapter, like Princess Sprite, you know, you just throw a bit of poison.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: Build up your immunity.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, I think that your scenario, you sound better prepared.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's not even in the life of your destination for you.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, if you're talking about having to exert yourself, one way to reduce the exertion would obviously be to ditch your gear, just bring essentials to make it out, right?
- 49:11[SPEAKER_05]: That's the way about carrying your food.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that you're already letting your little belly, right?
- 49:16[SPEAKER_02]: But the other thing is your scenario, which kind of played off mine, involves you being alone.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_02]: And unless you're traveling off trail like you're more, you tend to be pretty likely to run to somebody at some point.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_02]: And so you have to be humble enough to be willing to beg for food, or know how to ask for lightly for food.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I've been in that situation where I've had to do that, or even ask for water if you got a water.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_02]: People don't always say, yes, strangely, but if you ask enough people, eventually earn somebody who's nice.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, if I've been asked plenty of times, and I'm always happy to give so, yeah.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's a realistic situation, but it's humbling.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_05]: I think we need to cycle back to Bigfoot because you always have that option.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_05]: Bigfoot will bring you food if you can find one in your nice.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_05]: They know how to find food in the woods.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I didn't know we were going to get out of our big food.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: What we know about big food from watching shows is that big food likes to take your food.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like if you have apples, big foods really apples.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_02]: My other co-host Derek, like he lost a bet one season and so I'm that same strippling with National Park, he had to go into Bigfoot territory and we're an apple necklace and He made it all alive though.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_00]: He made it make it all alive.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_00]: Made it out alive.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_05]: It's such a puzzling thing.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_05]: Here's what I like about Bigfoot and it's not going to be one of you saying it'll kill you in the woods most likely.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_05]: it's that we all need a monster under the bed.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_05]: The thing that goes bump in the night.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_05]: The fascinators and the pin our fears on.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_05]: You know, and the big foot has always been mine.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_05]: I just love that.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_05]: The idea that
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: you know the the nine foot tall big hairy thing is going to pick me up and carry me off I mean that's like wow that would be something yeah we actually had an alien encounter one of our trips and there you go it was right when I was having my dessert I could not be more annoyed uh there's an alien that's a great dessert that they interrupted your food yeah uh pray tell more
- 51:21[SPEAKER_02]: You're taking an interesting story and wrecking it.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_02]: Come on then.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna you're gonna exaggerate on it or elaborate on it This is your story All right, that's one of our trips and one of our guys dressed up as an alien start making a whoop noise and there you Yeah, he wanted to do it at three in the morning But then he realized everyone might be more mad waking up to sleep, so he did it around dinner time
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: But that's what we bring on the trips to the community from getting bored.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this was somebody in his 70s and this was at night time just to clarify and so he was trying to get a reaction at everybody and
- 51:59[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that the whoops sound really like made people think of aliens, but it was that.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: It was fun.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: I feel bad for the people all capping next to us because we had Pinotas and aliens and all that.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: It was summer camp all over again.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_02]: And that's your point for everyone's like the monster into the bed or the scary thing.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like a lot of people.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I've been on bad patentrums where people just serve.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_02]: cannot sleep if you think that any point like a mountain line is going to tear through their tent right and get them but none of these things big foot monsters bears mountain lines none of these are in the top ten ways you're likely to die in this real just one of them.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_00]: We had one guy he fell asleep in the back of his pickup truck and woke up to a bear just scratching scratching
- 52:42[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that I mean like that's his encounter like he didn't die.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_02]: It just the bear was a curious smell something and did it so you literally Peabat a story that undid exactly what I just said prior No, because he made it out a lot of people down about the one side you're like what actually bears can wake you up by scratching you
- 52:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but he was not in a tent so there wasn't the barrier and it was just middle of nowhere So yeah, I'm just letting people know that the worst that happened sometimes is like a bear's there So you don't try to get people outside and it's like actually you might want to stay inside Yeah, microclothes.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want people in the woods with me Carl.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_05]: I want people less people I want to enjoy nature I gotta tell you this one because it's gonna defeat your tent story.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_05]: Maybe oh
- 53:27[SPEAKER_05]: Don't tell me because I like my tent and that's what we back packed with tarps a lot instead of tents Okay, and I have multiple reasons for doing this for one you can have a very light setup for another I love to be able to see out.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_05]: I want to see the bear
- 53:44[SPEAKER_05]: If I if I hear the bear stomping around my tent and I can't see him.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's that's really the monster under the bed for me But if I can watch him go by then I'm okay.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_05]: I see what he's up to one morning I woke up to some noises and I looked up and there was a female moose Then her calf.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_05]: I'll get this right eventually And they were in our camp
- 54:07[SPEAKER_05]: And so whispering, we're in the tarp under the tarps, right?
- 54:10[SPEAKER_05]: And whispering, I just kind of nudged my songs and woke them up.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_05]: So they wouldn't like trigger a panic or something.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_05]: And this, this calf stuck its nose into my son's tarp and went nose to nose with my son because he was so curious about what was going on because we're so deep in the woods I didn't know what people were.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_05]: And that was probably the most dangerous encounter wildlife encounter I've ever had.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_05]: Because.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: Well, how did you send react?
- 54:41[SPEAKER_02]: What do you do?
- 54:43[SPEAKER_05]: He smiled.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_05]: You didn't like stayed still.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_05]: He didn't pet the... No, no petting.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_05]: Oh.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_05]: All right.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's not an option.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_05]: It's no petting allowed.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_05]: Our biggest fear is getting the...the cow moves upset.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_05]: Because moves are the most dangerous animals in Colorado.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_05]: And if they get mad, they're just way bigger than we are.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_05]: One good kick and you're in trouble.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_05]: So sure, but I guess the point is I like to see the animals in the woods, and I don't like the tent barrier.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_05]: So Ben, what do you think of that?
- 55:16[SPEAKER_00]: I like the tent.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_00]: I like the tent.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_00]: If it's out there I can yell and if it, you know, if it's something bigger than I don't know if I want to see it.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and one of the things we talked about on our show too is we come up with solutions these things where we have inventions and we'll run these inventions by CEOs and try to convince them.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_02]: to, you know, basically just make stuff.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that having some sort of tent with like a, you know, see through ultra light material is the solution.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_02]: You're in your tent, but you can still see outside.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_02]: I like it.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: Or like electric fans or I'm just top of your tent and you don't keep it out.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_05]: So you know, if I could bring that.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_05]: They make all sorts of bear and trigger alarms.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_05]: You know where you can string some monofilament around and if it gets triggered it will wake you up and scare things off and I I've never used that if you guys tried that I'm not No, like I'm going back to I have an unhealthy lack of fear while animals so I I like want to have these encounters like that's right It's fun for me, but If you watch wilderness family you're more the old soul wilderness family Carl
- 56:21[SPEAKER_00]: And you just have to have your kids bring wild animal like the baby's home.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then, because what happens is the dad's always returning the baby animal to the mom.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: And then winds up getting attacked.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_02]: So that's what you had to do.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it does.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_02]: OK.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_02]: Just train my kids that way.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, just think we got down through the lift yet.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_05]: I just looked at the clock and we were reading up the time.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_05]: This is so much fun.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_05]: I think we had some good ones there, right?
- 56:47[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think you're going to close your mind.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_05]: I guess the moral of the story is the things that you're really, you think you're afraid of in the woods are not the things you need to worry about.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_05]: Exactly.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_02]: For most people, corrects.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_05]: Yep.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_05]: Ice people.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_05]: I always warn people against type of thermia, you know, and I, like I said earlier, that will sneak up on you and that'll do you in and a heartbeat.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_05]: exposure to sun and biting insects and stuff and that can wear you down.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_02]: And if you get a rain jacket and a still with fuel like that will solve a lot of those problems.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_05]: That'll take care of so much.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: Not all of them, but a lot of them.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_05]: I haven't experienced this spring that I'd never had before.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_05]: I don't normally have seasonal allergies and I'm mentioning this on the show, but I got stranded in the desert and Utah, but
- 57:44[SPEAKER_05]: and some of my buddy was we're on motorcycles and he was going out to see if he could you know come back and rescue my broken motorcycle but i laid down under this juniper tree not knowing that it was throwing pollen it was springtime and it was i mean it was raining pollen on me i didn't realize it
- 57:59[SPEAKER_05]: I had the worst allergy attack I've ever experienced and I was completely incapacitated.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_05]: I couldn't see, couldn't breathe right.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_05]: Wow.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_05]: And I thought, you know what, in a survival situation?
- 58:11[SPEAKER_05]: Something this simple is so debilitating, it could really, really impact your survival odds.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_05]: Luckily I got away from the tree and about an hour and a half later I came back to my senses.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_05]: Wow.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_05]: I never thought of that.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_05]: Something that simple.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_05]: That's that's the kind of stuff you wouldn't think of.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because you don't always know what you're vulnerable to you, right?
- 58:31[SPEAKER_02]: You don't always know.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I did you know that you had Juniper.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_05]: No, I've never reacted to it before, but when it came to the game.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, right.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_05]: Well, do you cover that much pollen, too?
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 58:43[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's overwhelming.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_05]: The thing.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_05]: So anyway, there are all sorts of interesting things.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_05]: Well guys, tell everybody again about your podcast and how they can listen to it if they want to.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, thanks.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_02]: Appreciate the opportunity.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_02]: So we're, yeah, backpacking.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_02]: Mission podcast, tips and tales of the sense of humor.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_02]: And we, yeah, we have a mix of, we have some different hosts.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_02]: Ben's one of the main ones when we have guests on.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_02]: And we got guests, yeah, all sorts of guests like we mentioned before.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_02]: And you can find us on all the audio apps.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_02]: We're on YouTube.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_02]: But I think most people find us on audio apps.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_02]: That's where most of our audiences.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_02]: And we would love to have you join the family and have some fun with us.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_02]: And, um,
- 59:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we even do like we talked about kind of getting people outside like we even do Patron trips or part of our Patron family like they'll come out on trips with us and we have a good time and and play our Japanese games and and the alien story I've been was sharing that was one of the the Patron members that brought the costume.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 59:42[SPEAKER_02]: You never know who's going to show up.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_02]: So I've been what I miss.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's it.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_00]: We just have a lot of fun and a good time.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_00]: We get a variety of guests like we had to see IA analyst to survivalists, to the history channels, Oak Island guys on, so just kind of a variety of guests and stuff, but we have a good time and we try to try to entertain people.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it's family friendly.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: And there we go.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that sounds great.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_05]: And everyone out there in the Adventure Sports podcast, let's let's see what happens if all of you Listen to the next back-packing and blisters episode all at once.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, so it's always one of the good ones Carl
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_05]: So, look them up and listen to at least one episode and you know what, I enjoy their podcast and I listen to it from time to time and I think maybe you guys have listened to the Adventure Sports podcast once or twice too, so I thank you for that.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm subscribed.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'm subscribed.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_02]: I'd listen.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_02]: And we even... Yeah, you even... Inspires for our guests.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_02]: Like we mentioned earlier, Moose Butler came on our show and I didn't... I hadn't heard of him before until he was on your show and I was like, oh, he's really compelling.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_02]: So... No.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, your show has been an inspiration to us for sure.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_05]: Well, very, very cool.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_05]: Well, guys, thanks for your time.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_05]: I was fine.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_02]: I like you too.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_05]: All right.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I guess we better wrap it up because it's getting long, but hey, this is what Adventure Sports, you know, it's what they're all about.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_05]: It's the interactions with other people, the social time together, the fun, the storytelling.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_05]: So make sure that you find your sport and get out there and have some fun.
