- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Business Roundtable podcast. I'm your host
- 0:17Speaker 1: David Carr Founderers Doing Your Business, where we bring great
- 0:20Speaker 1: leaders onto this podcast, those that are in business, those
- 0:23Speaker 1: that are helping organizations grow, align, be sustainable, And I'm
- 0:28Speaker 1: really excited about the conversation today. We're going to get
- 0:31Speaker 1: into the topic of money, which all businesses face, but
- 0:34Speaker 1: not maybe from the topic that you're typically approaching, and
- 0:38Speaker 1: maybe it's not just earning it, but what we're going
- 0:40Speaker 1: to talk about is how does that show up in
- 0:42Speaker 1: our lives, our leadership, our relationships, and really our long
- 0:46Speaker 1: term legacy. Many business leaders are really externally struggling on
- 0:52Speaker 1: all of that, like hey, how to make more money,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and then internally carrying that pressure, that stress, perhaps disconnection
- 0:58Speaker 1: and uncertainty that you feel like you're alone. And I'm
- 1:01Speaker 1: excited because uh Nicholas and Michaels is going to be
- 1:05Speaker 1: here on the podcast today. He has actually written a
- 1:07Speaker 1: book which we're going to highlight here as well, called
- 1:09Speaker 1: Rich by Choice. You're gonna be able to check that out.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But one of the things I really liked about Nick,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and you're going to learn more about this is just
- 1:16Speaker 1: his approach to money education, learning about it, and I
- 1:21Speaker 1: think that's a very different conversation. And I want to
- 1:23Speaker 1: just say thanks for coming on the podcast. Nick, wonderful
- 1:26Speaker 1: to have you here today.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Hi David, I'm excited to be here. Thank you so
- 1:30Speaker 2: much for having me.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Absolutely. One of the things you when you and I
- 1:34Speaker 1: were talking before we started recording this podcast is you know,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you're asking me in different questions and I appreciated your
- 1:40Speaker 1: perspective on things, and one of them I wanted to
- 1:43Speaker 1: ask you is like, you know, how much money do
- 1:47Speaker 1: we actually need to live the life that we want? Like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you know, I think we get into this conversation and
- 1:52Speaker 1: I think you start to unpack it in your book
- 1:54Speaker 1: is I just started reading it and I really enjoy
- 1:56Speaker 1: some of the exercises, But what does that look like?
- 1:58Speaker 1: How much money do I actually need to live on
- 2:00Speaker 1: to give me the life I really want?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and Dave, that's a fantastic question. And you know
- 2:06Speaker 2: that's something I really try to educate people about because
- 2:09Speaker 2: I hear that all the time where people say, Nick,
- 2:12Speaker 2: I saw this commercial, I read this that I need
- 2:14Speaker 2: a million dollars, Nick, I need five million, ten million,
- 2:16Speaker 2: hundred million, whatever that dollar amount is. Is that that
- 2:19Speaker 2: is and that, and I try to tell them that's wrong.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And the reason I tell them wrong is it's different
- 2:26Speaker 2: for everybody, you know, And it's nothing that people are
- 2:30Speaker 2: wrong and they're silly for doing it, chasing the number.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But what I have to do is just take a
- 2:35Speaker 2: break and take a deep breath and really understand what's
- 2:37Speaker 2: important to them, who's important to them, what's the life
- 2:40Speaker 2: that they're gonna lead that's gonna bring the most joy
- 2:42Speaker 2: because it's not a dollar amount. Yes, a dollar amount
- 2:44Speaker 2: will equal that life that's gonna make them happy. But
- 2:47Speaker 2: then start with the dollar amount, start with the life
- 2:49Speaker 2: that you want. That's I mean, because that's what the
- 2:51Speaker 2: book's about. Yes, rich money, but rich in life. Because
- 2:54Speaker 2: if you're just rich in money and you have nothing else,
- 2:55Speaker 2: I'm promise me you're not gonna be happy. That's that's
- 2:59Speaker 2: the point is is to understand who you are, where
- 3:02Speaker 2: you want to be, and then you start decided a
- 3:05Speaker 2: dollar amount that you need because everybody's different.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, And I'm glad you said that, Nick, because
- 3:11Speaker 1: we I think we get in this comparison game like, well,
- 3:14Speaker 1: this person's that person. Are you married or you're single?
- 3:17Speaker 1: To you have children. Where are you living in the world?
- 3:20Speaker 1: You know, are you an employee or an entrepreneur? And
- 3:24Speaker 1: I mean, to me, I'd love you to maybe unpack
- 3:27Speaker 1: a little bit more because to me, that's overwhelmed. Why
- 3:29Speaker 1: do you feel like people are so overwhelmed, even quite
- 3:34Speaker 1: honestly when they appear successful. Why do you why do
- 3:37Speaker 1: you feel that?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, when you talk about a peer successful, I think
- 3:41Speaker 2: about this research study that I read one time I talk.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It says, outwardly successful inwardly stress. So a lot of
- 3:47Speaker 2: people try to appear successful by this or that, but
- 3:49Speaker 2: inwardly they're they're not happy. And that's huge. And I
- 3:52Speaker 2: was just recently out of high school. I go around
- 3:54Speaker 2: to high schools around Texas and teach money and teach
- 3:57Speaker 2: life to two seniors. I told talk about this exist
- 4:00Speaker 2: topic here recently and it had to do with Facebook.
- 4:02Speaker 2: So since Facebook coming out, and I'm not against Facebook.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I have a Facebook. It's wonderful I could keep up
- 4:06Speaker 2: with family and friends. But since Facebook comes out, okay,
- 4:09Speaker 2: it has come out, we see depression has gone up,
- 4:12Speaker 2: especially with well all people, but highly in teenagers. And
- 4:16Speaker 2: the reason why is it's the comparison game. What you
- 4:19Speaker 2: just talked about people wanting this or wanting that. And
- 4:22Speaker 2: if you think about Facebook, everybody puts their successes on Facebook.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know that the big dinners, the parties of travel,
- 4:30Speaker 2: which is great. I love that no one puts their
- 4:32Speaker 2: credit card bill on Facebook. No one puts the argument
- 4:36Speaker 2: or spat they had with their spouse on Facebook. You know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you don't put those things when you're button head with
- 4:40Speaker 2: your teenage kiddo. And then those are all part of life.
- 4:43Speaker 2: But the reason I bring that up and I talk
- 4:46Speaker 2: to kids about that is because in the book it
- 4:48Speaker 2: has them do an exercise and it walks them through
- 4:51Speaker 2: step by step to get a real good understanding of, Hey,
- 4:53Speaker 2: what's going to make you happy? Well? I mean when
- 4:56Speaker 2: you're one hundred and ten years old, I call it
- 4:57Speaker 2: the rocking chair test, and you're looking back over your life.
- 5:00Speaker 2: What has to happen? Specifically? Do you go, David'll be like,
- 5:04Speaker 2: I lived an amazing life. I mean I did it
- 5:07Speaker 2: because you're not thinking about the money at that stage.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You're thinking about a wife, a life well lived. And
- 5:12Speaker 2: so once you get an understanding of not just an idea,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but a detailed plan, then the comparison game goes away
- 5:20Speaker 2: because then, like right now, my wife and I do
- 5:22Speaker 2: these exercises which I talk about in the book, and
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'll see people on Facebook. I'm happy for them, God
- 5:27Speaker 2: bless them. I really mean that. But I don't want that.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And it's not that I'm better or worse. It's just
- 5:32Speaker 2: because I have an understand of, Hey, these are the
- 5:34Speaker 2: things that are going to make me happy. This is
- 5:36Speaker 2: what I'm working for. And so I think that's a
- 5:38Speaker 2: big thing David to where people if you don't know
- 5:41Speaker 2: exactly precisely what you want, it's easy to fall into
- 5:45Speaker 2: the comparison game of I want this or that or
- 5:48Speaker 2: that looks fun.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Right. That's a great point. I love that question of
- 5:51Speaker 1: what do you want. I work with clients on that too,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I would say most of the time people aren't
- 5:56Speaker 1: clear on what they want, why and why do they
- 6:01Speaker 1: want it? You know, we live in a world where
- 6:03Speaker 1: bombarded with marketing messages to buy this, that and the other,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and they think that that's gonna give me a new car,
- 6:10Speaker 1: go on a vacation or whatnot. And they're spending all
- 6:13Speaker 1: this money. They're earning money and then they're spending money, right,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and this is going gets to the point where I'm
- 6:19Speaker 1: gonna you know, there's a lack of understanding and they're
- 6:21Speaker 1: not educated about what it takes to earn the money
- 6:24Speaker 1: and then what it takes to spend the money and
- 6:26Speaker 1: what's that looking like? And so if you know what
- 6:28Speaker 1: you really want to your point, if it's you can
- 6:32Speaker 1: design your life. I think that's what I hear you say, Nick,
- 6:35Speaker 1: And that's why you said I love the title rich
- 6:38Speaker 1: by choice. I'm choosing how I want to have my
- 6:42Speaker 1: life versus I think a lot of people aren't thinking
- 6:45Speaker 1: through this and they're making decisions. And I want you
- 6:47Speaker 1: to get more into this about why what happens when
- 6:50Speaker 1: people aren't truly educated about the money and that essentially
- 6:53Speaker 1: that that's coming in and out of their life. What
- 6:55Speaker 1: do you what do you see there?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Oh? Absolutely? Because I always say, you know, you can
- 6:59Speaker 2: have a life of design or you can have a
- 7:02Speaker 2: life by default. Life by default means you're just you're
- 7:05Speaker 2: kind of like a sailboat in the wind without a motor.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You're just going with the currents wherever they flow. You
- 7:10Speaker 2: here and flow, and there's spontinaty. There's some fun parts
- 7:13Speaker 2: of life of being spontaneous, but you don't want your
- 7:15Speaker 2: whole life to be like that. You want to have
- 7:17Speaker 2: a charted map and course of understanding. Uh what's important
- 7:21Speaker 2: and that's and what's important to is not just material things. Okay,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and that is important, But you talk about this this
- 7:27Speaker 2: this podcast is you know, the steward your business and
- 7:29Speaker 2: stewardship you know is everything that you're blessed with. Your relationship.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Your core values helped the most all the things that
- 7:36Speaker 2: go into it of understanding of hey where am I going?
- 7:40Speaker 2: And I use one word, uh, you know, being intentional,
- 7:43Speaker 2: And so that's that's the first thing of understanding that.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Then the next step is using your money to align
- 7:50Speaker 2: with that. Because this world is a paradox. I mean
- 7:53Speaker 2: it really is. It can be an amazing, beautiful, fun
- 7:56Speaker 2: world full of adventure, but it also be a dark, scary,
- 8:00Speaker 2: painful place, and so you want more of this in
- 8:05Speaker 2: the simple fact is you need money in this world.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You do, and the smarter you are with money, the
- 8:10Speaker 2: better decisions you will make with money. It can help
- 8:12Speaker 2: the line and get you to where you want to be.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I often see it through your business, you know, unresolved,
- 8:18Speaker 1: stressed or impacts because of like you're saying it facts
- 8:22Speaker 1: their leadership, because whether it's financials or communication overwhelmed, these
- 8:26Speaker 1: things will show up in the business at some point,
- 8:29Speaker 1: right And unfortunately, I've seen, you know, I'm business owners
- 8:33Speaker 1: not do this well like your point, and they use
- 8:36Speaker 1: their business as a piggybank or whatever, and they're like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: hold on, we're not running this well. And it's impact.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's not only affecting us, but our employees potentially in
- 8:43Speaker 1: other families. And so, you know, you have been through
- 8:48Speaker 1: a lot in your life. I want to kind of
- 8:50Speaker 1: get this a little bit so people can lean into
- 8:51Speaker 1: this that Nick isn't just coming from theory here. One
- 8:55Speaker 1: thing that really struck me as I did my research
- 8:58Speaker 1: and learn more about you having done the guess, is
- 9:00Speaker 1: that you spent you know, you read I think over
- 9:04Speaker 1: like three hundred books that I saw and all these interviews,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and you spend a lot of time understanding because you
- 9:10Speaker 1: talk a little bit about your journey through hardship and
- 9:14Speaker 1: how did that shape your own relationship with money and understanding.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Oh absolutely, my life has been on a roller coaster ride.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I've been up, I've been down, I've been sideways. So
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've lived it I've also helped families all of the
- 9:26Speaker 2: world go through this, and I've researched it as well.
- 9:30Speaker 2: But yeah, going back to my childhood, I was actually
- 9:32Speaker 2: raised pretty wealthy. I mean, we weren't rich, but we
- 9:34Speaker 2: were coming from My dad was a business owner. My
- 9:37Speaker 2: mom we were stay at home mom. Four boys for
- 9:39Speaker 2: wild and crazy boys by the way, but never a
- 9:42Speaker 2: dull moment. So and when I was ten years old,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I didn't even know what money was. I really didn't.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I just knew that, hey, life's pretty good. We get
- 9:50Speaker 2: to travel and there you know, free time, a lot
- 9:53Speaker 2: of peace in the home. But then, David, it changed overnight,
- 9:58Speaker 2: it did. I remember, like as yesterday, my mom came
- 9:59Speaker 2: in my room, my safe place, and I remember she
- 10:04Speaker 2: she looks worried. She sits down next to me, puts
- 10:06Speaker 2: armor on me, says, your dad and I are getting divorced.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And and David, I didn't know this at the time,
- 10:12Speaker 2: but those words literally shouted my childhood because it seemed
- 10:15Speaker 2: like overnight my mom went from a stay at my
- 10:17Speaker 2: home mom of four boys, pretty comfortable lifestyle to a
- 10:21Speaker 2: single mom of four working three jobs just to keep
- 10:23Speaker 2: things going. And as you can imagine, like, things weren't
- 10:27Speaker 2: that much better for my dad either, I mean, And
- 10:29Speaker 2: what I remember was it wasn't the stuff, because we lost,
- 10:32Speaker 2: went from a big house to a tiny house, a
- 10:34Speaker 2: wealth of freedom, a life of freedom to you know,
- 10:36Speaker 2: hardship and pain. But that's what I remember. It's not
- 10:38Speaker 2: the stuff that I remember. It's the pain and hardship
- 10:43Speaker 2: physically mentally that it takes on somebody, and it took
- 10:46Speaker 2: it on my mom and my brothers, and that stuck
- 10:50Speaker 2: with me. But but my life comes full circle to
- 10:53Speaker 2: where yes, I was able to, you know, live out
- 10:56Speaker 2: of that, grow, become successful in business. But then here
- 10:59Speaker 2: it comes again, David. When I my wealth threw as
- 11:02Speaker 2: I got older, my happiness wasn't growing with it. I
- 11:06Speaker 2: was a business, I was successful in bank accounts, investment assets, DA, DA, DA,
- 11:10Speaker 2: but my happiness wasn't growing with it. So that's where
- 11:15Speaker 2: I learned that money is not everything. Money is important, yes,
- 11:18Speaker 2: and being a good steward of it, yes, learning about it,
- 11:21Speaker 2: controlling it, mastering it, yes, But it's not everything. And
- 11:25Speaker 2: that's where the book talks about being yes, rich with money,
- 11:28Speaker 2: but you want to be rich in life. And so
- 11:31Speaker 2: I've lived it and I felt it and my number
- 11:35Speaker 2: one goal is to help people now because I've been
- 11:37Speaker 2: I'm on the other side of it now. Yeah, and
- 11:40Speaker 2: I want to share what I've learned.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that was inspiring as I was reading your book, Nick,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and there's a portion where you're talking about, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 1: literally millions of dollars being offered up to you, but
- 11:52Speaker 1: you recognize what was the cost of that? Not financial?
- 11:56Speaker 1: I mean, yes, there's a financial cost, but with the
- 11:58Speaker 1: cost of my soul if you my living my purpose.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And I want to have you on the podcast because
- 12:04Speaker 1: I get a lot of people to come that want
- 12:05Speaker 1: to be on the podcast, and that's you know, for
- 12:08Speaker 1: different reasons, but I think coming from at the end
- 12:11Speaker 1: of the day. You have a book, which is great,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and I know you want to We'll provide links to
- 12:14Speaker 1: that United Connecting on LinkedIn. It's fantastic. But the end
- 12:17Speaker 1: of the day, we want to have people that have
- 12:19Speaker 1: a servant's heart on the on the podcast that want
- 12:21Speaker 1: to lift up other people, that want to help them
- 12:23Speaker 1: along their journey and be one voice that somebody else
- 12:25Speaker 1: could listen to and say, oh man, I'm not alone,
- 12:28Speaker 1: or my parents were divorced, or I went through my
- 12:31Speaker 1: business collapsed or you know whatever that keeps me. But
- 12:33Speaker 1: there's hope, there's somebody else that's been there, that's ahead
- 12:36Speaker 1: of they can listen in and lean into. And I
- 12:39Speaker 1: think you, guys, again, as you're going through this, you
- 12:42Speaker 1: have comments or feedback as we're coming on the podcast,
- 12:45Speaker 1: or please leave it so that way Nick can follow
- 12:47Speaker 1: up with you. You know. And I feel like there's
- 12:50Speaker 1: a different life that I hear you live living now,
- 12:52Speaker 1: which I say, it's a richer life that is now.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Money is part of that, but you and it's not everything.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And that's I think a whole different conversation that I'm hearing.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Oh absolutely absolutely. Like I said that this world's a paradox,
- 13:09Speaker 2: money is a paradox as well. And you're what I'm
- 13:11Speaker 2: about to say next is going to blow your mind.
- 13:13Speaker 2: But money is everything, but money is nothing. It really
- 13:16Speaker 2: is when you think about it. I mean, it is
- 13:17Speaker 2: everything because that's the world we live in. You need
- 13:20Speaker 2: it to eat, for health care, things like that, but
- 13:23Speaker 2: it's really nothing. And when it talks about what truly
- 13:26Speaker 2: matters in this world. And so what you want to
- 13:28Speaker 2: do is you want to get very in tune with
- 13:31Speaker 2: yourself and very detailed of of what really does matter, David.
- 13:34Speaker 2: I mean who matters? What matters? What are your core values,
- 13:37Speaker 2: what's your purpose in this world? And then you align
- 13:39Speaker 2: align your money with those things. That is what I've seen,
- 13:42Speaker 2: and I teach people how to do that. That's what's
- 13:44Speaker 2: going to bring more to or more peace less, pain
- 13:46Speaker 2: less struggles. That's what I'm passionate about because when I
- 13:49Speaker 2: when I talk to my clients and I work with
- 13:51Speaker 2: families all over the world. Yes, I'm really good at
- 13:54Speaker 2: the money and the dollars of math. I've always been
- 13:55Speaker 2: great at math. But when I get so excited about
- 13:59Speaker 2: is we start mapping out the life. I mean that
- 14:02Speaker 2: that's fun. Of the things they want to do, the
- 14:04Speaker 2: things they're worried about that we get to provide strategies for,
- 14:07Speaker 2: but it's the life that that gets us all excited.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Absolutely. Yeah. I think I think a lot of business
- 14:14Speaker 1: owners can relate to that drive to create that stability that,
- 14:18Speaker 1: like you said, be there for the people they really
- 14:21Speaker 1: care about emotionally and not just financially. And that to
- 14:25Speaker 1: me is definitely in alignment with what I do at
- 14:27Speaker 1: Stewart your business as well, because as I'm having you
- 14:29Speaker 1: on the podcast. I'm more looking at leadership in the
- 14:31Speaker 1: business and the people. But that's the work we do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: And so if you infuse this together, how you're going
- 14:36Speaker 1: to be so much better of a richer? I would
- 14:40Speaker 1: say joy filled life. What would you say is the
- 14:44Speaker 1: difference between you know, financial success and really finding that
- 14:48Speaker 1: financial I would say, Drilly joy in the world. The
- 14:52Speaker 1: happiness is kind of circumstantial. But you know here I
- 14:54Speaker 1: financial success, okay, great, but there's between that financial I
- 14:58Speaker 1: would say joy that that point where you've come to
- 15:02Speaker 1: now talk a little bit about that.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll even get I'll give you example, because financial
- 15:06Speaker 2: success just could be commas and dollars and a bunch
- 15:09Speaker 2: of zeros, and that's wonderful, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 15:12Speaker 2: But I would say financial joy and peace is all
- 15:15Speaker 2: the other things that come along with it. So I
- 15:18Speaker 2: remember this like it was yesterday. You know, I was
- 15:20Speaker 2: my wife and I were newly married, you know, early
- 15:23Speaker 2: on in our marriage, and we just couldn't get on
- 15:26Speaker 2: the same page when it when it came to money,
- 15:28Speaker 2: and we weren't we weren't fighting or on the brink
- 15:31Speaker 2: of divorce. We just couldn't come together and it was
- 15:33Speaker 2: my fault, David. It was. And when I talk about
- 15:35Speaker 2: the roller coast ride where success was growing, business was going.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I was one of the fastest financial advisors, growing clients
- 15:41Speaker 2: all around the world, becoming a partner at my firm,
- 15:43Speaker 2: I mean, all the things you would think of success, right,
- 15:46Speaker 2: But again, my happiness and joy wasn't moving up as
- 15:50Speaker 2: quickly as the monetary success was, and I couldn't put
- 15:53Speaker 2: it together. And yeah, and my wife and I couldn't
- 15:56Speaker 2: get on the same page. We were driving home from
- 15:59Speaker 2: a week in little weekend getaway and we're having a
- 16:02Speaker 2: little another money debate talk where we just couldn't get
- 16:05Speaker 2: things aligned. And she said something, she said, I just
- 16:10Speaker 2: want to know that we're in this together. And when
- 16:13Speaker 2: she said that, in my mind at that time, I
- 16:18Speaker 2: couldn't put together like what are you talking about. I'm
- 16:20Speaker 2: living my life for you or I mean, this is me.
- 16:23Speaker 2: I'm doing everything I can. But at that point I
- 16:25Speaker 2: had to go seek advice for mentors. You know what's
- 16:29Speaker 2: going on? This is that? And come to find out,
- 16:31Speaker 2: I was making a huge mistake, David, that I as
- 16:33Speaker 2: a financial advisor. I thought me being a financial advisor
- 16:35Speaker 2: to the family kind of handling the finances was me
- 16:38Speaker 2: helping the family, right, But I was young and I
- 16:42Speaker 2: was dumb, I mean really playing point I was. I
- 16:44Speaker 2: didn't understand the whole concept. Yes, in my mind, I
- 16:47Speaker 2: know Lee cleve become one flesh, but I didn't really
- 16:50Speaker 2: understand what that truly means and a living that out
- 16:54Speaker 2: in this world today. And so I give the exercise
- 16:58Speaker 2: in the book that we did. My wife and I
- 16:59Speaker 2: coming together to sit down and talk about those opening
- 17:01Speaker 2: questions is important conversations of really charting out a life
- 17:06Speaker 2: together and what's important to her, what's important to me
- 17:10Speaker 2: not just dollars and cents, but what does that really
- 17:12Speaker 2: look like? And our core values? What kind of kids
- 17:16Speaker 2: do we, you know, want to raise? What kind of
- 17:18Speaker 2: relationship does that look like? Time very important? What kind
- 17:22Speaker 2: of time flexibilities are we going to have? And So
- 17:26Speaker 2: when we did that, David, that completely changed our lives.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I mean our yes, wealth took off in a wonderful way.
- 17:33Speaker 2: We got on the same page, our marriage, everything started
- 17:36Speaker 2: to blossom and grow. It sounds so simple. And you
- 17:41Speaker 2: might be listening to this podcast right now and going
- 17:42Speaker 2: well done, Nick, I mean no, no, I see so
- 17:45Speaker 2: many people kind of doing that same thing, and it's
- 17:48Speaker 2: no one's fault. I mean, we live in a fast
- 17:50Speaker 2: paced world. Life comes out as fast, especially when you're
- 17:52Speaker 2: young and married or any phase of life, especially if
- 17:54Speaker 2: you're an entrepreneur. You're wearing twelve different hats at once, right, David,
- 17:58Speaker 2: that's what you help people with. So this is just
- 18:01Speaker 2: one area and there's many that that I was able
- 18:06Speaker 2: to receive help and learn and grow and how that
- 18:10Speaker 2: positively affective life. I mean nowadays my wife and I
- 18:12Speaker 2: we own businesses together. We do I mean, and it works.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I mean a lot of people say, how do you
- 18:17Speaker 2: do it? No, it does. It works because we spend
- 18:19Speaker 2: a lot of time of just being aligned. Now does
- 18:22Speaker 2: that mean that I'm perfect? No, I still have to say, Babe,
- 18:25Speaker 2: I messed up, I'm sorry and apologize all the time.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I still have to do that. But there's things like
- 18:31Speaker 2: that along the way that help you become richer in life,
- 18:35Speaker 2: not just with money.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I love how you said that you know, even though
- 18:39Speaker 1: you are a finished money, you were coachable enough to
- 18:41Speaker 1: realize that you needed a mentor. Nick. There's always somebody
- 18:46Speaker 1: I like to say, to the right of us, ahead
- 18:47Speaker 1: of us, and there's always the left of us behind us,
- 18:50Speaker 1: and you're offering for those folks that are maybe to
- 18:53Speaker 1: the left of you in a very carring and uplifting way.
- 18:56Speaker 1: You're saying, hey, I don't make the same mistakes I
- 18:58Speaker 1: made here, let me help you along the way. And
- 19:03Speaker 1: what I love hearing is being married for almost twenty
- 19:05Speaker 1: one years myself, is it's not going to just help
- 19:07Speaker 1: you in your bottom line financials. It can actually help
- 19:09Speaker 1: you and if you're married in your primary relationship and
- 19:13Speaker 1: ideally with your children when they as well. So it's
- 19:16Speaker 1: not just financial, it's actually the health of relationships. And
- 19:20Speaker 1: I would argue, and maybe you know you've worked with
- 19:22Speaker 1: people throughout their life, is they look back in their life,
- 19:25Speaker 1: it's what's the quality of my relationships? Not the dollars
- 19:30Speaker 1: in my bank account right now?
- 19:32Speaker 2: It's one very key area that we talk about. Who's
- 19:34Speaker 2: important it is so no I love that, David. You know,
- 19:38Speaker 2: I was part of a men's group many years ago,
- 19:40Speaker 2: and in this men's group it aged from twenty five
- 19:43Speaker 2: years old all the way up to seventy five years old,
- 19:45Speaker 2: vast diversity. But I remember it that there are six
- 19:47Speaker 2: individuals that got up there and that shared their life stories.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And these from the outside looking in, you would think
- 19:52Speaker 2: are wildly successful. I mean wildly successful, and they are.
- 19:56Speaker 2: They're wonderful and incredible men. That they also shared some
- 20:00Speaker 2: personal things, the things that they struggle with along the way.
- 20:03Speaker 2: What I quickly realized, I'm so grateful for this, I'm
- 20:06Speaker 2: so grateful for them for being vulnerable, is that we
- 20:09Speaker 2: all struggle. I mean, at the pure core of it,
- 20:13Speaker 2: as human beings, we're all trying to do two things.
- 20:15Speaker 2: One is overcome hardship increase joy every single human being
- 20:19Speaker 2: in this world. But guess what, we all make mistakes
- 20:22Speaker 2: and we all have struggles. Don't be afraid to reach
- 20:27Speaker 2: out and just go hey, I'm struggling with this, big
- 20:30Speaker 2: or small, because I promise you many people out there
- 20:33Speaker 2: are struggling with the same thing. And you can either
- 20:36Speaker 2: keep doing the same thing you're doing and not getting
- 20:38Speaker 2: better and experience pain and struggle, or you can just go, hey, David,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I'm dealing with this. You've been married, you have a
- 20:45Speaker 2: lot of life wisdom. Help me, and most people will
- 20:49Speaker 2: absolutely help you because they've probably been through it too.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Well, that gets to one of my follow
- 20:56Speaker 1: up questions because I think, and I appreciate you leading this,
- 21:00Speaker 1: Nick in that those mistakes don't define us. They're just
- 21:05Speaker 1: part of our journey. And I think for my own
- 21:10Speaker 1: personal faith journeys and why I'm a Christian as I
- 21:13Speaker 1: understand like, hey, that doesn't find me, and I have
- 21:15Speaker 1: a me personally, a savior that came in and said, hey, look,
- 21:18Speaker 1: we're gonna make things better and I'm gonna love you
- 21:20Speaker 1: a much better way of life, and so that you
- 21:23Speaker 1: can love and care for other people but fundamentally be
- 21:25Speaker 1: where I come from. But what what do you see
- 21:28Speaker 1: people sacrificing or you know, going through that they're not
- 21:32Speaker 1: talking about Nick. That's really because I'm hoping that will
- 21:36Speaker 1: unlock some people today that they're like, I don't know
- 21:38Speaker 1: if I could talk about this, or you know, it's
- 21:42Speaker 1: just me and and and and because I like your book.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It's rich by choice. So they're choosing, they're choosing, you know,
- 21:49Speaker 1: the good things, bad things, and they're they're just it's
- 21:52Speaker 1: a sacrifice. They're choosing some things that aren't ultimately going
- 21:55Speaker 1: to get them where they want to go. What are
- 21:56Speaker 1: they You've seen, Nick, are working with folks that are
- 22:01Speaker 1: finally like I've been choosing this, but I'm finally letting
- 22:03Speaker 1: it go so they can actually have a life by design.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Absolutely, and to be quite honest with David, it's a
- 22:11Speaker 2: whole gauntlet of things. I mean, there's a lot of
- 22:13Speaker 2: different topics out there, because if you want to be
- 22:16Speaker 2: rich in life, there's a lot of different areas faith, relationships,
- 22:19Speaker 2: health and wellness, positive mental growth, mindset, there's a lot yes, money,
- 22:23Speaker 2: business helps, So there's a lot of different things. People
- 22:26Speaker 2: and myself included, we don't intentionally try to make mistakes
- 22:30Speaker 2: so we can make our lives tougher. Like no one's
- 22:31Speaker 2: doing that. They're not. They just people want to do
- 22:34Speaker 2: the right thing, just like you and I. They're trying
- 22:37Speaker 2: to do the right thing, they just don't know what
- 22:39Speaker 2: to do. And so that's the goal of the book
- 22:42Speaker 2: is to give simple, little baby steps and strategies they
- 22:45Speaker 2: can start to implement. Because life is all about trajectory.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Think about it, Small little changes today completely change your
- 22:53Speaker 2: trajectory down the road. And people, you don't have to
- 22:55Speaker 2: completely change your life, which if you do that wonderful,
- 22:58Speaker 2: but you don't have to. It's just a little bit
- 23:01Speaker 2: of changes. The biggest thing is to understand something's not
- 23:05Speaker 2: working like you know it, Like if you're listening to
- 23:07Speaker 2: this podcasts, just like myself and David. If something's not working,
- 23:10Speaker 2: you know it. You know it's causing you stress, you
- 23:12Speaker 2: know what it is. So you have two options. You
- 23:14Speaker 2: can just keep doing it and what does Einstein's stay
- 23:17Speaker 2: The definition of insanity is keep doing the same thing
- 23:19Speaker 2: over and over and expecting different results. Or you can
- 23:22Speaker 2: go searching for answers. And that's what I do. When
- 23:23Speaker 2: it came to my wife, we were struggling. I see
- 23:25Speaker 2: a lot of that. Number one thing is spouse is
- 23:28Speaker 2: not being able to get on the same page. And
- 23:29Speaker 2: then it's not just with money, but it could be
- 23:31Speaker 2: in life, in business. And we have a couple of
- 23:33Speaker 2: tact except that help with that because what they like, oh,
- 23:38Speaker 2: when two people get with one two minds get together
- 23:40Speaker 2: on one plan, there's a third power there. It's incredible.
- 23:43Speaker 2: So that's really really important. And here's the next thing
- 23:47Speaker 2: I'll share with you, David, talking about what you just described.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Most people think that once the destiny they reach the destination,
- 23:54Speaker 2: they're happy, Like once I get to one million, once
- 23:56Speaker 2: I get to one hundred million, whatever, dog once I
- 23:58Speaker 2: sell my business or grow the business to this remnistry.
- 24:00Speaker 1: And be happy.
- 24:01Speaker 2: It's actually not true from psychological research states that it's
- 24:05Speaker 2: once they start taking the steps, the actions, and they
- 24:09Speaker 2: can be small to getting to that desired goal. Is
- 24:12Speaker 2: when increase, peace, joy, happiness, all those things fulfillment start
- 24:17Speaker 2: to start to go up. So my recommendation is identify
- 24:21Speaker 2: or take some time to think about your life, take
- 24:23Speaker 2: some time to think about where you are struggling, and yes,
- 24:26Speaker 2: absolutely seek help. But once you start taking that first
- 24:29Speaker 2: step and moving your life and changing your trajectory, I
- 24:34Speaker 2: promise you stress, anxiety, pain, hardship, that's going to start
- 24:39Speaker 2: to slowly decrease and the other positive things are going
- 24:42Speaker 2: to increase. It's not going to happen overnight, but that
- 24:45Speaker 2: is it, because it could. We could be on here
- 24:46Speaker 2: for the next six hours talking about all the things
- 24:48Speaker 2: that we as humans struggle with, which we do. We
- 24:50Speaker 2: all do. But the goal is is find someone if
- 24:54Speaker 2: you don't seek out help, not just anybody. The Bible
- 24:57Speaker 2: talks about wise individuals seek wise counsel and that and
- 25:01Speaker 2: that's what I love about what you do, David. In
- 25:04Speaker 2: entrepreneurship and in stewardship is that you're giving people an
- 25:07Speaker 2: avenue for education.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely yeah. And I think to your point, Nick,
- 25:14Speaker 1: I like the life by design, and I want you
- 25:16Speaker 1: to talk a little bit more about You talked about
- 25:19Speaker 1: your wife and you guys got online. Now you have
- 25:21Speaker 1: multiple businesses. It isn't talk a little bit about. It's
- 25:26Speaker 1: not just set it and forget it. It's like, and
- 25:28Speaker 1: I've learned this over the years of like, let's just
- 25:31Speaker 1: use recalibration. I like my right because some things get
- 25:34Speaker 1: out of whack even though you really said it right.
- 25:37Speaker 1: We set the alignment, we talked, talk a little and talk.
- 25:40Speaker 1: This applies to businesses too, because I think about vision
- 25:43Speaker 1: values and to your point, you just said there's little increments. However,
- 25:47Speaker 1: if we're not paying attention, and that increment shifted a
- 25:50Speaker 1: little bit. We were setting in one way and we
- 25:53Speaker 1: kind of look up and it's not the way. So
- 25:56Speaker 1: can you talk a little bit about how you have
- 25:58Speaker 1: been able once you go and get that foundation of set,
- 26:02Speaker 1: how do you maintain that, how do you actually get
- 26:04Speaker 1: it so that you're not having to do wide swings
- 26:06Speaker 1: like oh my goodness. And there's a lot of people
- 26:08Speaker 1: careful right in the market. Now, goodness, A want my money.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Stop this, there's I'm not going to you know, talk
- 26:14Speaker 1: about the fear or the challenge of how to weather
- 26:16Speaker 1: those things that inevitably are going to come.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely, you know. Number one thing is education is
- 26:22Speaker 2: the gateway to success. I mean, continue to educate yourself
- 26:25Speaker 2: and where you specialize, whether what type of business you are,
- 26:28Speaker 2: try to become the best you can help the most
- 26:30Speaker 2: people possible. If you do that, number one, success is
- 26:33Speaker 2: going to rise. But the next thing is, if something's
- 26:36Speaker 2: important to you, track it. I can't tell you how
- 26:40Speaker 2: powerful that is. If something's important, do you track it,
- 26:43Speaker 2: monitor it, talk about it. Like if you start with
- 26:46Speaker 2: the end in mind, know where you need to get
- 26:49Speaker 2: to to to accomplish the goals, and then go back
- 26:52Speaker 2: from there. Just like if you're a football player and
- 26:55Speaker 2: I just bring this up because the NFL combined, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 2: they do all these tests, right, So if my goal
- 26:59Speaker 2: is to fay press a certain amount and run a
- 27:01Speaker 2: certain speed, welly, that's the end of mind. That's where
- 27:03Speaker 2: I know I need to get to. But then I
- 27:05Speaker 2: create workout programs to know where I need to be
- 27:07Speaker 2: three months beforehand, six months beforehand, a year before and
- 27:10Speaker 2: just do that same thing with business. It may not
- 27:12Speaker 2: be three months, six months, it might be three years,
- 27:14Speaker 2: five whatever it might be. But you will have to
- 27:16Speaker 2: track it. That's the number one thing. I mean, you've
- 27:19Speaker 2: got to monitor it. And the more attention you pay
- 27:22Speaker 2: for it. So yes, the whole set and forget it,
- 27:25Speaker 2: that's not really going to work. But also too, David,
- 27:28Speaker 2: I think a big thing is as I go through
- 27:30Speaker 2: different seasons of life, as probably you, our goals and
- 27:34Speaker 2: desires change. But I would here's what I would do,
- 27:38Speaker 2: and here's what we did. We get very specific and
- 27:41Speaker 2: very detailed, where it's not just hey we want X
- 27:44Speaker 2: amount of money and there's nothing one that's a great
- 27:46Speaker 2: place to start. But we first talked about, hey, what's
- 27:48Speaker 2: the exact life, you know, like when we're this age,
- 27:50Speaker 2: where are we living, what's our free time? It's Tuesday
- 27:52Speaker 2: afternoon at three o'clock, what are we doing where? What
- 27:56Speaker 2: kind of relationship we ever get? We have four kids, Okay,
- 27:58Speaker 2: so when they start to kids of their own, statistics speaking,
- 28:02Speaker 2: one of them I hope not. I hope they all
- 28:03Speaker 2: stay close to home, but one of them might be
- 28:05Speaker 2: across the country for us. Okay, are we going there
- 28:08Speaker 2: just for holidays? Do we have a second home there? Like?
- 28:11Speaker 2: What is that relationship? Look at how involved do we
- 28:14Speaker 2: want to be. There's no right or wun I'm not
- 28:16Speaker 2: coming from a place of judgment of anybody of what
- 28:19Speaker 2: they decide to do. But the point is for us,
- 28:22Speaker 2: we got very clear on these things. And guess what,
- 28:24Speaker 2: there's a financial strategy that goes along with these decisions. Again,
- 28:28Speaker 2: not better or worse. So we start getting very detailed
- 28:32Speaker 2: of what that looks like like to us. Traveling that
- 28:36Speaker 2: time with our kids when they're younger is very important.
- 28:38Speaker 2: So that's an investment, it absolutely is. So we set
- 28:41Speaker 2: money aside because we believe that that creates memories of
- 28:46Speaker 2: our kids and soon to be down many years down
- 28:49Speaker 2: the road, grandkids will be able to experience with us
- 28:51Speaker 2: and that's valuable to us. So remember we're not just
- 28:54Speaker 2: talking about our business revenue stream at X or our
- 28:57Speaker 2: ex income or X asset net worth. No, it's what
- 29:02Speaker 2: does that life give us that's important to us. So
- 29:06Speaker 2: that's really where I'd say you want to start.
- 29:08Speaker 1: That's great, and I think most people wouldn't expect that
- 29:11Speaker 1: from a financial Somebody has a financial background, like well,
- 29:13Speaker 1: what mutual funds should I invest in? Or whatever? And
- 29:15Speaker 1: it's like, hold on, where are you going with this?
- 29:19Speaker 1: And then you find it sounds to me like Nick,
- 29:21Speaker 1: then you find the right and one thing is upstood
- 29:23Speaker 1: on your book. I thought it was and I think
- 29:25Speaker 1: a lot of Unfortunately this is the probably the financial
- 29:28Speaker 1: planners get a bad rap for a legitimate reason where
- 29:31Speaker 1: they're being sold X product by this product thing. Well,
- 29:35Speaker 1: how is this an alignment? And I get this all
- 29:37Speaker 1: the time as a business owner. I'm getting pitched all
- 29:40Speaker 1: the time. Hey do you need more leads? You know this,
- 29:42Speaker 1: but do you understand what I'm trying to accomplish with
- 29:45Speaker 1: the business? H So why would I buy from you
- 29:48Speaker 1: if you don't understand where I'm going? And I love
- 29:51Speaker 1: that you help work with family businesses, Nick, And I
- 29:53Speaker 1: think you know if a business owner is saying, well,
- 29:55Speaker 1: I want to you know, I want to hire more staff,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I want to grow in this, or you're like, okay,
- 30:00Speaker 1: well then let's think about what does that need to
- 30:02Speaker 1: look like? Yeah, you know, right, and and and and
- 30:07Speaker 1: taking that time and talk a little bit about folks
- 30:10Speaker 1: that you might encounter that because I've work with a
- 30:13Speaker 1: lot of entrepreneurs that are going really hard and fast,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and to them, I think and they know here sometimes,
- 30:20Speaker 1: but it's hard for them to speak to them to
- 30:22Speaker 1: slow down a little bit, because what's the what's that saying?
- 30:26Speaker 1: You might be putting in the ladder on the wrong
- 30:28Speaker 1: wall or climbing up the wrong side, and like you
- 30:30Speaker 1: get up there, like oh, I meant to be on
- 30:31Speaker 1: that one, and they're going talk a little bit about
- 30:34Speaker 1: the business owner or leader that is pushing and they're like, well,
- 30:37Speaker 1: I don't have time to slow down and consider this.
- 30:41Speaker 2: No, man, what you brought up is is a huge
- 30:43Speaker 2: thing that I see because when most people become an entrepreneur,
- 30:46Speaker 2: they do it for the resources, the time, the flexibility, yes,
- 30:51Speaker 2: monetary things like that. But then when they start getting
- 30:54Speaker 2: into entrepreneurship, they just go go go go, go, go,
- 30:57Speaker 2: go go go. All the reasons that they got into
- 30:59Speaker 2: entrepreneurship kind of go by the wayside. It's not their fault.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I'd been there. I get it, because when you're an entrepreneur,
- 31:05Speaker 2: I mean, like I said, it's going fast paced. You
- 31:07Speaker 2: want to grow, and you think that being busy equal success,
- 31:13Speaker 2: and that can be true, but it's not always true.
- 31:16Speaker 2: So a couple of things that I would do, and
- 31:18Speaker 2: I call this ten X in your business. And it
- 31:20Speaker 2: doesn't matter if you're new or you've been in business
- 31:22Speaker 2: an entrepreneur for twenty thirty years. Everybody wants to ten
- 31:25Speaker 2: x their business, right who doesn't want to? And so
- 31:30Speaker 2: the first thing you want to do to ten ex
- 31:32Speaker 2: your business is do exactly for your business what I
- 31:34Speaker 2: just talked about, Chelsea and I do for your life.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Get very crystal clear on what your business what you
- 31:37Speaker 2: want to look like. And that is, yes, from a
- 31:39Speaker 2: revenue and profit standpoint, but it's also from a resource standpoint.
- 31:43Speaker 2: You know, who are you helping, how are you making
- 31:45Speaker 2: a larger impact? What kind of time and flexibility do
- 31:47Speaker 2: you have on your calendar. That's the number one thing
- 31:50Speaker 2: that you want to do because again by design, be intentional,
- 31:55Speaker 2: charge your course and change your trajectory. The next one
- 31:59Speaker 2: I've seen. I've seen these numbers and they're fascinating. On
- 32:01Speaker 2: talking about ten extra business, you need to understand as
- 32:04Speaker 2: a business owner what you're good at and what you
- 32:07Speaker 2: love to do. It's called your unique ability and you
- 32:10Speaker 2: can write this out you're listening. Find your unique ability.
- 32:12Speaker 2: And if you don't know, ask your spouse, ask your
- 32:15Speaker 2: number one, two three, you know, managers, employees that would
- 32:18Speaker 2: t are your team that work with you, ask them.
- 32:20Speaker 2: You'll say what am I great at? And not only that,
- 32:23Speaker 2: you find what you're great at and what you love
- 32:26Speaker 2: to do and you fill your calendar with that and
- 32:28Speaker 2: that that's number one way because if you do that,
- 32:31Speaker 2: that's a ten x in your activity level. Then you
- 32:34Speaker 2: have the next pier down is what am I good
- 32:37Speaker 2: at but I necessarily don't love to do, but I'm
- 32:39Speaker 2: good at it that activity and those activities are going
- 32:42Speaker 2: to two x your business because you're still good at it,
- 32:45Speaker 2: but it just doesn't bring you life, joy and things
- 32:47Speaker 2: like that. But then if you go down this pyramid
- 32:50Speaker 2: is what don't I like to do and what am
- 32:53Speaker 2: I not good at? And then you need to delegate
- 32:56Speaker 2: because that actually is a negative to the ten extra
- 32:59Speaker 2: your business. Most most businesses haven't seen these numbers played
- 33:03Speaker 2: out and like a profit revenue ten x two x minus.
- 33:06Speaker 2: So you need to get understandable what activities fill your
- 33:09Speaker 2: calendar and where do they fallow? Am I good at it?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Do I love it? The next thing you want to
- 33:14Speaker 2: do is who not how? Who not how? Who not how?
- 33:18Speaker 2: Is find the who that can get you to where
- 33:22Speaker 2: you want to be the who. So if I'm not
- 33:24Speaker 2: good at something, I don't like it, who is good
- 33:26Speaker 2: at it? And who does love it? Because they're going
- 33:29Speaker 2: to help me ten x my business. So the goal
- 33:31Speaker 2: is to fill the business calendar with all ten xes.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You've got to take time again. It starts with the
- 33:37Speaker 2: end in mind of understanding crystal cleare where you own
- 33:39Speaker 2: your business to be in the life that's going to
- 33:40Speaker 2: give you and the people you're going to help so important.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Then you feel the activities. The next thing is the
- 33:48Speaker 2: last thing I'll share and I can talk about this
- 33:49Speaker 2: all that get really exactly mind the gap, Mind the gap.
- 33:53Speaker 2: And what I mean by mind the gap is there's
- 33:55Speaker 2: a book out there called The Gap in the Game,
- 33:57Speaker 2: and there's two different types of gap. The Gap in
- 33:59Speaker 2: the Game is a wonderful if you haven't read it,
- 34:00Speaker 2: read it. And what it talks about is focus on
- 34:02Speaker 2: the game, not where I want to be. Yeah, focus
- 34:06Speaker 2: on that, but don't forget to look at where I was.
- 34:08Speaker 2: So if I'm always thinking about, hey, I should be here,
- 34:11Speaker 2: I need to be there, that's depressing. But if I
- 34:13Speaker 2: look back and even for my own self, look out
- 34:16Speaker 2: far and my wife and I have come over the
- 34:17Speaker 2: last three years. It's amazing and I'm so grateful. I
- 34:20Speaker 2: thank God every day. I still have goals of where
- 34:23Speaker 2: we want to be and more people we want to help.
- 34:25Speaker 2: But don't just focus on the glass half empty. Focus
- 34:28Speaker 2: on the glass half full and keep that confidence and
- 34:30Speaker 2: momentum going well. Now, when I say mind the gap
- 34:32Speaker 2: and this way is I read this wonderful parenting book
- 34:36Speaker 2: and it talked about minding the gap and it said, hey,
- 34:39Speaker 2: look yourself in the mirror and say, I want to
- 34:41Speaker 2: raise kids with these core values. Now what's the gap
- 34:45Speaker 2: between how I want to raise my kid and these
- 34:48Speaker 2: different core values and who I am as an individual?
- 34:52Speaker 2: Very very important. If I'm trying to teach my kids
- 34:54Speaker 2: to have integrity and don't lie, but then they see
- 34:57Speaker 2: me steal something from w not paid for something I
- 35:01Speaker 2: accidentally from Walmart or HP and not go back and
- 35:03Speaker 2: pay for it. So the gap between who I'm trying
- 35:05Speaker 2: to raise and who I am as a person very
- 35:08Speaker 2: very important. When I say that, do that in business,
- 35:11Speaker 2: if you're trying to tenax your company, you want to
- 35:14Speaker 2: get the right people on the bus, and the better
- 35:16Speaker 2: we grow as individuals, success is going to follow. And
- 35:19Speaker 2: you know that in entrepreneurship and stewardship. So mind the
- 35:23Speaker 2: gap if you want these type of employees, people that
- 35:26Speaker 2: are positive mental growth minds, that people that want to
- 35:28Speaker 2: be in the trenches and grow with you. Is there
- 35:31Speaker 2: a gap between who you are as an owner and
- 35:34Speaker 2: the type of person you are and the type of
- 35:36Speaker 2: employee that you want to have. Not many people talk
- 35:39Speaker 2: about this. This is really really important because you're a leader.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I just like I'm a leader, and I'm not coming
- 35:44Speaker 2: from a place of judgment. I'm not perfect, but I
- 35:46Speaker 2: have certain core values that I'm trying and I talk
- 35:49Speaker 2: about these things with my kids, but with our team,
- 35:52Speaker 2: and these are things that they'll see me work towards.
- 35:55Speaker 2: That's really important. I read this one book. It's the
- 35:57Speaker 2: only book I've ever heard, and I've read one hundreds
- 35:59Speaker 2: one hundreds books, and this is the only book I've
- 36:00Speaker 2: ever heard this. They say you cannot be mad at
- 36:03Speaker 2: your team or your employees if you're on halfway across
- 36:06Speaker 2: the world, sipping dackries on an island and you're yelling
- 36:09Speaker 2: at them for not working harder. Okay, there's nothing wrong
- 36:12Speaker 2: with you know, taking a vacation, but they said, if
- 36:14Speaker 2: you're just vacationing all year wrong long, and you're getting
- 36:17Speaker 2: managed you employees for not working harder, there's a disconnect there. Now,
- 36:22Speaker 2: at some point down the road, yes, you can have
- 36:23Speaker 2: a self sustaining business. Or wasn't talking about that, but
- 36:25Speaker 2: it just it talks about minding the gap. And David,
- 36:29Speaker 2: that's powerful.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, you brought so many different points in there, Nicholas,
- 36:33Speaker 1: and I love it because very it's very common what
- 36:36Speaker 1: I do at steart of your business. In fact, the
- 36:39Speaker 1: five voices of assessment to your point of understanding who
- 36:41Speaker 1: you are to lead yourself and your teams besides outside
- 36:44Speaker 1: of your technical skills. I'll make sure I put that
- 36:46Speaker 1: in the link here in our show notes because free
- 36:49Speaker 1: you can go take that to your point. A lot
- 36:51Speaker 1: of folks don't understand that, Nick, and they will try
- 36:54Speaker 1: to mimic or try to be somebody that they think
- 36:56Speaker 1: is a good leader or whatnot, and it may not
- 36:58Speaker 1: be authentically them. So I think getting that feedback is
- 37:01Speaker 1: very valuable and to your point too. I even do
- 37:03Speaker 1: an exercise just like you said of taking folks about
- 37:06Speaker 1: documenting their time. How long does it take you do X,
- 37:09Speaker 1: Y and Z thing? Is it in your your your
- 37:12Speaker 1: sweet spot where it's like things that you should be
- 37:14Speaker 1: mentoring and training at somebody else or bringing them in
- 37:17Speaker 1: and finding the people. And again I'm a connector. I
- 37:20Speaker 1: love bringing and doing those things. And I know my
- 37:22Speaker 1: strength is also not sometimes the very detail oriented and
- 37:25Speaker 1: some strategy, and that's where you need to pair up
- 37:28Speaker 1: with somebody like yourself, Nick that it's saying, look, I'll
- 37:31Speaker 1: look at these things and I'm gonna ask you the questions.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna help tee it up for you. So sometimes
- 37:35Speaker 1: people are not always driven that. I remember when I
- 37:37Speaker 1: started my business, for one of the first things I
- 37:39Speaker 1: did was hire a bookkeeper because I knew that my strength,
- 37:43Speaker 1: that's I'm not my best aware of energy to be
- 37:45Speaker 1: looking at all the numbers and getting the receipts align
- 37:47Speaker 1: and all these other things. I had to be focused
- 37:49Speaker 1: on other elements in the business there and so understanding
- 37:54Speaker 1: that is a liberating thing. And to your point, it
- 37:55Speaker 1: really creates that ten X and that creates that self
- 37:59Speaker 1: managing company. And so you know, look at yourself like
- 38:02Speaker 1: you're saying, and just be honest with what I'm doing.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Is it going to create the legacy the impact that
- 38:09Speaker 1: I really want? Or am I said getting caught into
- 38:13Speaker 1: busyness And that kind of leads me. As we're getting
- 38:15Speaker 1: close into the podcast, I do want to ask you
- 38:16Speaker 1: a little bit about where you've seen people successful in
- 38:21Speaker 1: what they would look back and they would say, I
- 38:23Speaker 1: lived a good life. I lived a successful life. I
- 38:27Speaker 1: the legacy that I'm proud of they left, you know,
- 38:32Speaker 1: one hundred million dollars or one hundred dollars. I don't
- 38:34Speaker 1: you know what it looks like in the bank, because
- 38:37Speaker 1: some people want to leave a big best thing. People say,
- 38:39Speaker 1: I don't want to have anything. I want to spend
- 38:41Speaker 1: it all absolutely absolute out wherever they wanted to go, right.
- 38:46Speaker 1: You know, speak a little bit about what you've seen
- 38:49Speaker 1: as you're helping business owners or leaders at the end
- 38:52Speaker 1: of their whatever that point is for them, and they
- 38:54Speaker 1: feel like I did, they could go in and say,
- 38:57Speaker 1: well done, good and faithful servant. I did what I
- 38:59Speaker 1: was to do.
- 39:01Speaker 2: It is and when you use the word back there
- 39:03Speaker 2: just saying going to the word legacy and I love
- 39:06Speaker 2: that word, and I think sometimes that that word when
- 39:09Speaker 2: it's used, it can it can have a misleading direction
- 39:13Speaker 2: to it because legacy or estate planning people think about
- 39:16Speaker 2: documents and legal what we trust, wills, DA DA DA DA,
- 39:20Speaker 2: business evaluation, things like that. My grandpa passed away several
- 39:26Speaker 2: years ago, and he was a wonderful man, and my
- 39:29Speaker 2: stepdad gave the talk at his funeral, and he and
- 39:34Speaker 2: I remember it. I was wearing a gray suit and
- 39:37Speaker 2: a white shirt and I was on the far right
- 39:38Speaker 2: side of the the chapelain was an old, old chapel
- 39:42Speaker 2: with wooden pews, and and but he started to talk
- 39:45Speaker 2: of saying, you know, his grandpa's life was like a
- 39:48Speaker 2: pebble being thrown into a pond. And when you throw
- 39:51Speaker 2: a pebble into a pond and pictures beautiful, you know,
- 39:54Speaker 2: blue pond and right in the middle of nature. And
- 39:57Speaker 2: every time you throw a pebble in there, there's a
- 39:59Speaker 2: ripple effect that goes around. And he talked about my
- 40:03Speaker 2: grandpa his life being that pebble, and the ripple effect
- 40:06Speaker 2: was all the positive ripple effects he's had on all
- 40:10Speaker 2: the people he loved, not just his family, but every
- 40:12Speaker 2: second of every day, you're influencing others, and if you're
- 40:16Speaker 2: a business owner, you have a huge impact and influence
- 40:20Speaker 2: on others. And so when I talk about that, you
- 40:23Speaker 2: talk about stewardship, and most people think stewardship's money, and
- 40:26Speaker 2: it is, but stewardship is everything, every single thing you
- 40:31Speaker 2: were blessed with. How are you using that to have
- 40:35Speaker 2: a positive ripple effect? And that talk caught my attention
- 40:39Speaker 2: because not only first thing it was Okay, I'm part
- 40:43Speaker 2: of my Grandpa's ripple effect. Think about it. I am
- 40:45Speaker 2: an extension of that, but I'm also creating my own
- 40:50Speaker 2: ripple effect. So when I talk about legacy again, it's
- 40:55Speaker 2: how am I positively influencing all those that I can counter? Yes,
- 41:00Speaker 2: my my wife, my children very important, and it's not
- 41:04Speaker 2: just from a monetary standpoint, but it's the core values
- 41:07Speaker 2: and then the habits and the skills and and and
- 41:10Speaker 2: love and so not just my family but everyone. So
- 41:13Speaker 2: that's what I mean like legacy is how have you
- 41:16Speaker 2: positively impacted all those and all that you've been blessed with?
- 41:20Speaker 2: And that's when you start thinking about that. A there
- 41:23Speaker 2: could be a little bit of pressure, you know, you've
- 41:25Speaker 2: heard of it, but just but think about the opportunity
- 41:29Speaker 2: that you have, and especially if you're a business owner,
- 41:31Speaker 2: because that ripple effect is not only the people that
- 41:33Speaker 2: you serve and the people that you help, but also
- 41:36Speaker 2: your team and community at large.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Absolutely, Now I so appreciate you, you know, saying that
- 41:42Speaker 1: yesteuortionship is a very powerful We're all entrusted your right
- 41:45Speaker 1: is and money. It's I looked at at our people,
- 41:47Speaker 1: are all of this, our family what is entrusted to us?
- 41:50Speaker 1: And so I know we're getting into the podcast. I
- 41:52Speaker 1: would love to go along and we'll have to have
- 41:54Speaker 1: you come back.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Nick.
- 41:55Speaker 1: It's been a great conversation. But so you know, with that,
- 41:59Speaker 1: we like to begin with the end in mind. You know,
- 42:01Speaker 1: what would you encourage somebody to do and that they
- 42:05Speaker 1: can after this podcast that they start putting into practice
- 42:10Speaker 1: in their life so that they can do a life
- 42:11Speaker 1: by design like you said earlier, and I holy subscribe
- 42:14Speaker 1: to that, live a life by design and then really
- 42:17Speaker 1: can look back and say I stewarded, well I did
- 42:20Speaker 1: you know. But it starts with that, Like you said,
- 42:22Speaker 1: that little bit, there's a little would you would you
- 42:24Speaker 1: what would that see? What would you plan them and
- 42:26Speaker 1: help them encourage them to do absolutely.
- 42:30Speaker 2: I'm going to give them a free gift and it's
- 42:32Speaker 2: an exercise to where they can follow it step by step.
- 42:34Speaker 2: And it's actually from a chapter in our book that
- 42:37Speaker 2: we have received so many positive and encouraging letters and
- 42:42Speaker 2: responses and emails and that, and that's really I mean,
- 42:45Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for that. Yes, the awards, this or that,
- 42:47Speaker 2: it's wonderful. But when you receive that something's positively impacting
- 42:51Speaker 2: someone's life and they're grateful for it, that brings a
- 42:53Speaker 2: smile to my heart. And if you go right now
- 42:56Speaker 2: to Rich by choicebook dot com www dot rich by
- 43:01Speaker 2: Choice book dot com. Right there, there's going to be
- 43:04Speaker 2: a green box that says free gift. And what you'll
- 43:07Speaker 2: do is you just type and or click on it.
- 43:09Speaker 2: What says compounding by Choice. So you click the green
- 43:11Speaker 2: box says free gift. The next drop down say compounding
- 43:14Speaker 2: by Choice. And what I love is and this chapter
- 43:17Speaker 2: is very powerful. When you think people think about compounding, David,
- 43:20Speaker 2: what's the number one thing they think about is a
- 43:22Speaker 2: compounding interest. That's what most people think about. But what
- 43:27Speaker 2: this shows and you'll discover, is that every area of
- 43:31Speaker 2: our lives, David, every area of our lives is compounding
- 43:34Speaker 2: right now, and it's either for positive or for negative,
- 43:38Speaker 2: and we have a choice. And so there's a step
- 43:41Speaker 2: by step strategy that has you understand the key areas
- 43:46Speaker 2: in your life. Yes, family, me being a father, being
- 43:49Speaker 2: a husband, a business owner with my wife, my health
- 43:53Speaker 2: and wellness, my faith. You know, there's a lot of
- 43:55Speaker 2: different categories. And what it does is it helps you
- 43:59Speaker 2: create strategy and it gives you ideas and examples too,
- 44:02Speaker 2: but it helps you understand small little daily and weekly
- 44:07Speaker 2: actions that you can kind of incorporate into your life.
- 44:10Speaker 2: And it starts to tick your life in those areas upwards.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And so that's what I love and people are seeing that.
- 44:17Speaker 2: And so when you start to think about every area
- 44:19Speaker 2: of your life is compounding, what are you doing about it?
- 44:22Speaker 2: Is it important enough to you? And that could be
- 44:25Speaker 2: business money is in there. So I this is one
- 44:28Speaker 2: area that I'm it's really possitively impacted my life. Give
- 44:32Speaker 2: it away, Rich by Choice book dot Com, green box,
- 44:35Speaker 2: free gift, second job, Compounding by Choice. It's free, it's
- 44:39Speaker 2: going to send it to you, follow it along and
- 44:42Speaker 2: I it's going to I hope it helps you as
- 44:44Speaker 2: much as it's helped me and thousands of people around
- 44:46Speaker 2: the world.
- 44:47Speaker 1: That's wonderful, Nick, thank you for sharing that with our audience.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And I agree, you know, nothing stays static. Either things
- 44:52Speaker 1: are being built up or breaking down. Like that's a
- 44:56Speaker 1: compounding one way or the other. It's you know, and
- 44:58Speaker 1: so what do you want to have a life that
- 45:01Speaker 1: is you're proud of, you're thankful for, or you're living
- 45:03Speaker 1: a life of you know, not the despair. And we
- 45:07Speaker 1: want to be empowering people. We want people encouraged and
