- 1:00Yankees in Fenway Park losing four games.
- 1:04The next batter is D'Amato Garcia, ground ball to the left side by Belanger into center field for a base hit.
- 1:13Garcia singles to center field.
- 1:17But the Red Sox have played better in Yankee Stadium this year than they have in their home of Fenway Park.
- 1:23So it'll be interesting to see what happens this weekend.
- 1:26Palmer last Sunday worked seven and two-thirds innings against this Toronto club.
- 1:30Gave up only one earned run. That was a solo home run to John Mayberry.
- 1:35He was not the pitcher of record. The Orioles and Dennis Martinez lost that game an extra innings.
- 1:41In that game, three home runs for Eddie Murray.
- 1:46Howell is the batter with a runner at first base.
- 1:49Hitting.257 coming into the game tonight with eight home runs and.48 RBI.
- 1:54D'Amato Garcia is the runner at first base.
- 1:57He has 12 stolen bases all the year. He's been caught stealing 13 times.
- 2:04Palmer looks to first. Here's the first pitch to Howell. It's high. One ball and no strikes for Cobb.
- 2:09Lowenstein straight away in left field.
- 2:11Bumbray shaded to the left field side and center.
- 2:14Singleton well off the line and right. That's the Oriole outfield.
- 2:17Lowenstein, Bumbray and Singleton.
- 2:20Throw to first and the runner is back.
- 2:22Around the infield, Eddie Murray is at first.
- 2:24Dower is at second base tonight.
- 2:26Belanger at short.
- 2:28DeSensei is at third and Graham is behind the plate.
- 2:30Here's the 1-0 delivery. Breaking pitch. Swinging at an inch.
- 2:33He's got a piece of it. One ball and one strike.
- 2:37Roy Howell in the series in Toronto the four games played some very, very good defense.
- 2:44He'll be a free agent this year and the Orioles may take a look at him.
- 2:47They're going to need some third base backup help if DeSensei has that operation.
- 2:53Palmer again looks to Graham for the sign.
- 2:55Here's the pitch to Howell.
- 2:56Many lines. Well, a vicious line shot off to the left side into the box seat.
- 3:00So it looked like nobody was injured on that one.
- 3:02The Orioles beaten the Toronto Blue Jays eight times this year.
- 3:18They lost two games. That was in Toronto last weekend.
- 3:21Palmer looks the runner back to first base this time.
- 3:26Now he'll look in to get the sign from Graham.
- 3:29Again, the look to first. Here's the pitch. A fast ball or a change up is fouled off into one of the VIP boxes upstairs.
- 3:36Everybody jumps for cover, but everybody's OK.
- 3:42That one got pretty close to the owner.
- 3:45One ball with two strikes to come.
- 3:47Here's the next pitch to Howell.
- 3:49He had a tendency to go for it, but laid off and was a little high on the bomber change up.
- 3:53Two balls and two strikes to come.
- 3:55The on deck batter is Big John Mayberry.
- 4:02There's one out. No score on the game. We're just getting underway.
- 4:05Jim Palmer looking for victory number 16. The runner goes. Here's the pitch. Ground ball out to the manager.
- 4:10He cannot make the play at second. The throw to first in time is enough to get Howell.
- 4:15So Howell has retired sixth three. Garcia was running on the pitch, and he gets to second base with no problem.
- 4:21You look at Palmer's record, 15 and 10 this year, and people say, well, Palmer's had kind of an off year.
- 4:28I think too many people expect 20 wins every season from Jim Palmer. He could line up with 17 or 18 victories, and that is pretty good.
- 4:36In fact, it's very good in Major League Baseball, 17 or 18 wins.
- 4:42And Palmer has been pitching in some very tough luck at times this year.
- 4:46You can look back at a few games he lost.
- 4:51Two outs now, and here's Mayberry.
- 4:54Has a 10 game hitting streak on the line tonight, and he has five home runs in 10 games.
- 5:00Batting 248, 26 home runs, 77 RBIs, and Graham and Palmer having a bit of a communication problem, and Jim wants to get it straightened out, so Danny hustles off the mound.
- 5:11Mayberry is hitting 229 against the Orioles this year.
- 5:19D'Amato Garcia is the runner in second base. Palmer gets the sign. Now he'll look back to second.
- 5:34Here's a pitch to Mayberry, and it's high, and inside one ball and no strikes to count.
- 5:40The on deck batter is the designated hitter, Steve Braun.
- 5:50A gamble look to second. Here's Palmer's pitch, and that's low.
- 5:54Two balls and no strikes.
- 5:56Of course Palmer realizes that Mayberry went deep against him last Sunday in Toronto. He'll be careful with him.
- 6:02He was trying not to walk Mayberry when he set him to that pitch last Sunday that went out of the ballpark.
- 6:12A look to second. Here's the next pitch, and a breaking pitch again. Does not find the strike zone.
- 6:17Three balls and no strikes to count. Palermo is the home plate umpire tonight.
- 6:21Palmer and Palermo had run in after run in in Detroit recently when the two met.
- 6:26Palermo was behind the plate. He's considered one of the best ball and strike umpires in the league, but he's had problems with Palmer.
- 6:34The next pitch to Mayberry is high, and he walks.
- 6:40So Mayberry walks on four pitches, and that'll bring up Steve Braun. He started the year with the Kansas City Royals.
- 6:46He was released by the Royals, and then picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 6:50I remember seeing a telegram in Earl Weaver's office from Steve after he was released. The telegram said something to the effect.
- 6:58Have big league experience. We'll travel. And he wound up with the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 7:04Palmer, who has a photographic memory, will tell you that when Palermo has been behind the plate.
- 7:09Here's the pitch by Jim, and a fastball is a call strike as it hits with the letters just in the other portion of the plate.
- 7:14With Palermo behind the plate, Palmer's record is one win and six losses.
- 7:27Runners at first and second. One strike delivery is on the way, and a breaking pitch is high. One ball, one strike to come.
- 7:35In fact, Palmer's beefing with Palermo led to the ejection of Earl Weaver in Detroit.
- 7:47Jim's ready to work. The runners at first and second. Here's the pitch.
- 7:51That is ball two. Two balls and one strike to come. Palmer's run average is 3.84. He's making his 31st start tonight.
- 7:59He's 2-0 against the Blue Jays this year. We mentioned he worked Sunday and was not involved in the decision.
- 8:06He beat them on June the 25th, here 6-3. Here's the 2-1 delivery. Line drive, center field base hit.
- 8:14Bumbree charges. The runner is rounding third. It gets by Bumbree, and Garcia will score easily.
- 8:19Mayberry will go down to third base now. They will have no play at second.
- 8:24So the Toronto Blue Jays take a 1-0 lead. Braun singles to center field. Garcia comes home on the play.
- 8:33It got by Bumbree. So Mayberry took the opportunity on the arrow by Bumbree to allow Braun to go to second base, and Mayberry is now at third.
- 8:44And Lloyd Mosby is up.
- 8:551-0 Toronto. Mosby on the air, a 2-37, with eight home runs and 39 RBIs.
- 9:07He hits the Orioles at a 3-0-8 clip this year with two home runs.
- 9:14Runners at second and third. Palmer to the left-hander Mosby, a breaking pitch banged on the ground by Eddie Murray down the line.
- 9:20One run will score as Mayberry comes across with a second run. Here comes Braun with a third run.
- 9:25And Mosby goes into second with a stand-up double down the line and right field, and it's 3-0 Toronto.
- 9:35That ball got by Eddie Murray right on the line at first base.
- 9:40Scoring two more runs, three runs on Bumbree, it's Griffin's time at the inning.
- 9:45And he was out on a fly ball to center. Garcia then singles, Howell grounded off.
- 9:50Mayberry walked and Braun singled and now Mosby is double.
- 9:55And the batter is Baylor. Against the league, Baylor is a 2-43 hitter with a home run and 16 RBIs.
- 10:02Lifetime against Palmer, a 387 hitter, 12 for 30 runs.
- 10:06The home runner at second base now is Mosby. Palmer's fast ball is banged on the ground out to Blander, picks it up on the short hop,
- 10:13throw the first in time to retire Baylor 6-3, but not before the Blue Jays pick up three runs on three hits in the end of a hand-hitting play.
- 10:20The score is Toronto 3 Baltimore.
- 10:24Baltimore manager Oweever says the New York Yankees are going to have to win the American League East flag on their own
- 10:30without relying on the Orioles to lose.
- 10:32The Birds fetching another half game closer to the Yanks on Thursday by downing Detroit 7-3.
- 10:38Ken Singleton's two run singles in the seventh snap the 3-3 tie and foot Baltimore ahead to stay.
- 10:44The Yankees split a pair of decisions with the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 10:47They won the completion of the game suspended from Wednesday night 8-7 in 13 innings,
- 10:51but Toronto's Lewis Leo fired a two hitter to give the Jays a 2-1 win in the regularly scheduled contest.
- 10:58The Bronx Farmers now lead the East by 5 with 16 to play.
- 11:02Realistically, it's going to be awfully tough for the Orioles.
- 11:06You know, you get into situations like this where you're talking about the mathematical prospects,
- 11:10and of course mathematically the Orioles are not eliminated, but realistically it's going to be awfully tough.
- 11:16But then you can start talking realism with the Philadelphia Phillies, can't you?
- 11:20Back in about 1964, so they blew that big league, so there's always a chance.
- 11:24And that's what makes the game of baseball so interesting. Anything can happen.
- 11:29The Kansas City Royals will play either the Yanks or the Orioles in the American League playoffs.
- 11:34Kansas City slugger George Brett serving notice to both clubs that he's over the effects of a hand injury.
- 11:39Brett went 2 for 3 to raise his average to 398 as the Royals bump California 5-2.
- 11:46Brett is now 4 for 8 in the two games since his return.
- 11:54Well, the Orioles are in that groove again. I don't know whether you should call it a groove.
- 12:05Perhaps a rut might be a better way of describing it.
- 12:08I haven't got the numbers at my fingertips, but it seems so frequently in this month of September
- 12:13they have spotted the opposition a couple of 2 or 3 runs in the very first inning.
- 12:17And it has happened again tonight. Toronto leading 3-0.
- 12:21Bumbly Dowell or Singleton will start the Orioles in an effort to get caught up immediately.
- 12:25And they're out against Jackson Todd in his most recent start last Sunday in Toronto.
- 12:30This young right-hander went 8 and 1 third innings, allowed two runs.
- 12:34Both of those were Eddie Murray home runs.
- 12:37He gave up 6 hits but did not figure in the 13th inning 4-3 Toronto victory.
- 12:44Todd tonight makes his ninth start of the year.
- 12:48He has completed 3 of his previous 8 starts, 59 innings, 59 base hits.
- 12:55He has pitched to an earned run of 3.36.
- 12:59And in 8 starts Todd has been touched for 8 home runs.
- 13:05Well here is Al Bumbly, Al having an outstanding year, hitting 312 on the year.
- 13:11And he needs just 19 more base hits for 200.
- 13:15It's going to be tough, but it's not impossible. Todd?
- 13:18Well Al has hit in 29 of his last 34 games in a 3-31 quip, 50 for 151.
- 13:26Lead-off batter for the Orioles, Bumbly will be followed by Dowell and Singleton.
- 13:29The Birds need 3 to catch up to Toronto, we're only in the first inning.
- 13:35Here's the pitch to Bumbly, and a fastball as well, one ball and no strikes to count.
- 13:40As Chuck told you, Todd had the Orioles in a headlock in Toronto last Sunday.
- 13:46Until the 8th inning, the only runs of him came on Eddie Murray home runs,
- 13:50the attempt to bond his from Bunnett foul into the box.
- 13:54Jackson Todd was called up from Syracuse, August the 8th,
- 13:57and he's already compiled a 4-1 record, he's doing better with Toronto than he did with Syracuse.
- 14:02He was 7-9 when he was called up.
- 14:07Making his 9th start, he has 3 complete games.
- 14:10Looking for his fourth consecutive win.
- 14:131-1 delivery to Bumbly, fastball lined over the head,
- 14:16Griffin out into center field for a base hit.
- 14:19So Bumbly singles to left center, and the Orioles have a hitting start.
- 14:25Here are the first innings, that'll bring up Rich Dower.
- 14:29Now Dower performed the unusual last night, he struck out.
- 14:33Only the 16th time Dower has fanned this year in 551 plate appearances.
- 14:42He's called the toughest strikeout of the American League,
- 14:45has a 281 average, one home run of 56 RBI.
- 14:49Draw to first and Bumbly is back.
- 14:51North Sound was always a threat to go with 40 stolen bases.
- 14:54He's only been caught stealing nine times.
- 15:01Dodd looks to first base, here's the pitch to Dower,
- 15:03bounces in the dirt in front of the plate, so the count is two balls and no strikes.
- 15:08In the outfield tonight, Hudson, Paul Hudson is in left.
- 15:12Reversible Bob Baylor is playing center field tonight, and Mofi is in right field.
- 15:17Witt is behind the play, foul on the third, and Griffin is at short,
- 15:21Garcia is second, Mayberry is at first.
- 15:24Jackson Dodd, draw to first and Bumbly dives back in safely.
- 15:29He was released from the Phillies organization in spring training last year
- 15:33and signed on with Syracuse and was called up by Toronto at the end of the year.
- 15:37Made his major league debut in the National League with a Mets in 1977.
- 15:46In 59th inning so far, he's given up eight home runs, walking 24, striking out 27.
- 15:54Look to Bumbly, there he goes, here's the pitch to throw to second base,
- 15:57Bumbly flags and he's safe.
- 16:00And the count on Dower is now one ball and one strike.
- 16:09He now has 41 stolen bases in 50 attempts this year.
- 16:20And Bumbly by the way now just has to get 18 in for the first Oriole ever to get 200.
- 16:28One ball, one strike to count to Dower.
- 16:30The pitch to Dower, ground ball to the left side, picked up by Griffin.
- 16:33He'll not make the play a third to throw to first in time,
- 16:35and Dower is retired as Bumbly hustles down to third base.
- 16:39So Dower is off 6-3.
- 16:41Alfrengo Griffin took the one hopper at short.
- 16:44He looked at third base for the possibility of getting the speedy Bumbly ball,
- 16:48but he did not have a chance and threw the first to retire Rich Dower.
- 16:53Ken Singleton, he went three for four with three RBIs last night
- 16:57and recorded his 19th game-winning RBI.
- 17:00He leaves the American League in that category.
- 17:03He raised his batting average to 288.
- 17:06He has 90 RBIs at 22 home runs.
- 17:14Bumbly at third, the first pitch to Singleton, ground ball.
- 17:17Off to Garcia at second.
- 17:18He'll get it on the short hop, throw to first in time as the run scores,
- 17:22and it's a three-to-one game.
- 17:24Singleton grounding out to Garcia at second
- 17:27and Bumbly taking the opportunity to score the Orioles' first run from third base.
- 17:32So it's a three-to-one game.
- 17:34Here comes Eddie Murray.
- 17:37And here's the story on Murray.
- 17:38He was batting just 217 against the Toronto Blue Jays
- 17:43before he entered exhibition stadium last Thursday night.
- 17:46But that four-game series up there, Eddie went 10 for 19,
- 17:50but you believe that was five home runs and eight RBIs,
- 17:53and he scored seven runs.
- 17:55Lifetime against these Blue Jays, Eddie is batting 348.
- 18:03Two outs, nobody on, three-to-one game.
- 18:05Murray batting left-handed.
- 18:06Here's the pitch to Eddie.
- 18:07And it's a ball one, one ball and no strikes.
- 18:09Eddie became the youngest player in Oriole history.
- 18:12I had him drive in 100 runs last night.
- 18:19One-oh pitch is on the way to Eddie.
- 18:21Swing and a miss.
- 18:23One ball and one strike, and Eddie was not cheated on that rip.
- 18:27Hitting an even 300 tonight, coming into the game with 29 homers
- 18:30and that 100 RBI.
- 18:40Down the hill with a one-one pitch to Murray.
- 18:42High fly ball off to left field should be no problem for Hudson.
- 18:46Moves under it, makes the catch, and Eddie is retired on a fly ball
- 18:49to right field.
- 18:50The Orioles pick up a run at the end of one, Toronto three, Baltimore one.
- 18:55Elsewhere in the American League on Thursday,
- 18:57Milwaukee sweeping a doubleheader for Minnesota, nine to eight and five to nothing.
- 19:01Jim Rice is four RBI, self the Red Sox overpower Cleveland eight to three.
- 19:06Mickey Rivers had four hits to help Texas, feet open 10 to six,
- 19:09and the White Sox nipping Seattle five to four.
- 19:14The home run ball is all that makes the Los Angeles Dodgers tick.
- 19:17At least that's what's been working for them lately.
- 19:20Like a trio of bombs going off, the Dodgers exploded for three home runs
- 19:24to beat San Diego seven to three.
- 19:27The blasts by Dusty Baker, Ron Say, and Mickey Hatcher
- 19:30enabled the Dodgers to stay a game up on Houston in the National League West.
- 19:34The Astros did some long ball hitting of their own on the way to attend
- 19:37the two blitz in Cincinnati.
- 19:38Joe Morgan and Jose Cruz each slam two run homers to lead the way
- 19:42for the usually light-hitting Astros.
- 19:44In the only other National League game, Chris Shamless' two run homer
- 19:48gave the Atlanta Braves a two to one win over the San Francisco Giants.
- 19:54The contenders in the National League East all have a day off for rest and travel Thursday.
- 19:59First place Montreal resuming action in St. Louis,
- 20:02second place Philadelphia playing in Chicago.
- 20:04That game is already completed and Chicago won it in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 20:10The winner, Bruce Kear the loser, four runs, nine hits and two errors for the Cubs,
- 20:15three runs, eight hits, and no errors for the Phils.
- 20:18Third place Pittsburgh hosting the New York Mets,
- 20:20and the Astros leading the Phils by game and a half for the Pirates by five,
- 20:24but right now the Phils are out by two.
- 20:29Well, we'll go down to the top of the second inning,
- 20:31three to one the Blue Jays Palmer against Paul Hutchins here in the top.
- 20:35First pitch to Palmer, a swing and a miss.
- 20:38The game is playing tonight because Barry Bonnell was back in Toronto,
- 20:41or was back in Toronto yesterday,
- 20:43as Mrs. Bonnell gave birth to the Bonnell's third child, a ten pound baby boy.
- 20:50Palmer's one strike pitch at the ball, one ball and one strike to go.
- 21:00Palmer's next delivery and it's fouled off to the right side.
- 21:03Paul Hudson signed with the Blue Jays in 1975 while he was 17 years old.
- 21:15Blue Jays lead it by a score of three to one,
- 21:17coming up with three runs on three hits in the first inning.
- 21:19Palmer's next pitch, it's a ball, two balls and two strikes to go.
- 21:26We'll see Hudson, Witt and Griffin in this inning for the Blue Jays.
- 21:29Jim works again.
- 21:31Next pitch, line drive, center field, base hit for Paul Hudson.
- 21:38And the fourth hit given up by Jim Palmer.
- 21:43Ernie Witt, the catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, steps in against Jim Palmer.
- 21:48A 2-42 hit, it was five home runs and 23 RBI as the left-hander.
- 21:54And we see some activity off the Oriole bullpen as Dennis Martinez is up and warming.
- 22:00Dennis was the loser against the Toronto Blue Jays last Sunday as he came out of the bullpen
- 22:05and extra innings and just didn't have it.
- 22:11Well, look to first, here's a bitch at high.
- 22:15We mentioned to you Palmer beat the Toronto Blue Jays in a complete game, 6-3 here June the 25th.
- 22:20On July 1st he went 8-2-3 innings against Toronto, defeating them by a score of two to nothing.
- 22:25Tippi Martinez came in to pick up a save in that game.
- 22:29Palmer's 7-4 lifetime against Torello.
- 22:32Look to first, the throw that way and the runner is back in time.
- 22:37These two teams will play tomorrow night, that again on Sunday afternoon.
- 22:43Palmer's pitch, sales side, two balls, no strikes to come.
- 22:50The Yankee Boston Red Sox game is just about to get underway in Yankee Stadium.
- 22:55As soon as we get a score, we'll pass it along to you.
- 23:00Palmer again with a look to first, here comes a 2-0 delivery, ball three, three balls and no strikes to come.
- 23:06There's been very little jawing or peeping about Steve Palermo's call of balls and strikes tonight
- 23:11as Palmer has just been out of the strike zone time after time and he is usually a very good control pitcher.
- 23:18Walking 67 this year while striking out 99.
- 23:223-0 delivery, it's high, no question about it.
- 23:27Let's pause now for station identification. This is the Baltimore Orioles, baseball and work.
- 23:32This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 23:42Well, there's nobody else for the Blue Jays. Hudson single to open the inning.
- 23:46He's just gone to second on the walk to Ernie Witt.
- 23:49Now Ray Miller is out having a talk with Jim Palmer as Dennis Martinez continues to warm up the Oriole bowl pass.
- 23:56Now Palermo's going to go out and try to break up this mound coverage. Chuck?
- 24:01A while ago we wondered aloud how many times Orioles starting pitchers have given the opposition a lead in the first inning here in the month of September.
- 24:09Seems as though that's happened quite a few times. Well, really it hasn't.
- 24:13It's happened only six times in the month of September and four times the Oakland A's.
- 24:21I tell you, when you look back at the 80s season if the Orioles don't win it and you're looking at what happened down the stretch,
- 24:26you look at the Oakland A's and the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays splitting a series last weekend.
- 24:32Oakland coming to town taking three out of four.
- 24:38Palmer's at first and second. Here's the pitch. He squares the putt. It's right back to the mound. Palmer picks it up.
- 24:43He'll go to third base and the runner at third base is out.
- 24:48Now Palmer took the gamble and it paid off.
- 24:52Griffin was batting. He putted right out in front of the mound and there are very few pitchers in this game of baseball that could have made that play.
- 25:00Palmer will get off the mound as fast as anybody in baseball.
- 25:03He charged off the mound, looked at third and went there right away to cut down the lead runner.
- 25:11So Griffin reaches on a fourth.
- 25:18Oxnard has cut down and the batter is now Demosso Garcia. He's single to center field his first time up.
- 25:29Runners at first and second with one out. Here's Palmer's pitch and it's low on a fastball. One ball and no strikes to come.
- 25:42Garcia, a 282 hitter.
- 25:46Witt is at second base and Griffin's at first. Palmer's next pitch and it's high again. Two balls and no strikes to come.
- 25:58Lumbre is shaded just slightly to the left field side. Longstein pretty well off the line, straight away in left field, Singleton straight away in right.
- 26:07Palmer's next pitch and it's fouled off to the right side into the seat so the count will be two balls and one strike.
- 26:29Three to one, the Blue Jays lead it. The first game of the three game weekend series.
- 26:35Grant Flash is assigned. Palmer now looks back to second. Here's the two one delivery and it's a called strike.
- 26:41It just nicked the outside corner. And Garcia's a little unhappy with that call. Roy Howell is on deck.
- 27:00Williams is on second and Griffin off first. Here comes the two two pitch swing at an end.
- 27:06And I'll tell you what, Garcia takes a bad pitch who was high and a little tight.
- 27:12Boy, Chuck Howell. That's so typical of the manner in which Palmer will work.
- 27:16Now the pitch before that is a called strike and an upset Garcia jumps a little bit.
- 27:20He's a little angry over the call, a little unsettled as Palmer goes back with a waste pitch. Garcia's shaped.
- 27:27Now Garcia's in the dug up. Roy Howell is up. He grounded off the short his first time up.
- 27:36Palmer trying to come off the ropes here in the second inning.
- 27:42He looks to second. Here's the pitch to Howell's swing at an end. One strike to count to Roy.
- 27:50The inning started with a base hit by Hudson with then one. Hudson was cut down as Griffin reached on a one five fourth.
- 27:56Garcia's down on strikes. One strike to count to Howell. Left hand of hitter against Palmer.
- 28:01The pitch to him and he falls one off. Looks like it might make the upper deck on the left side. And it does.
- 28:08Rex Parny might give that man an error.
- 28:12Looks like he had the ball. Didn't it, Bill Ross? And then just let it fall out of his hands.
- 28:21Half-side at Yankee Stadium. Roy Howell hit it inside the park home run in that suspended game.
- 28:26It looked like the Blue Jays were going to walk off with it, but the Yankees came up with four runs to tie it.
- 28:31Then won it in the 13th. Came up with four on the 10th.
- 28:35Here's the pitch at the call strike three. On a change up from Palmer to Howell. He knew it. That's it.
- 28:41At the end of an inning and a half the score is Toronto 3 Baltimore 1.
- 28:46All-time Monday winter spectacular bid is the solid favorite in a field of three.
- 28:51For Saturday's Woodward Stakes at New York's Elmline Park.
- 28:54The first leg of the championship series, the Marlboro Cup, belongs to Winter's Pale,
- 28:59the speedy gelding who captured the event by four and a half lengths two weeks ago.
- 29:03Trainer Bud Delfin says that it doesn't matter whether there are two or 22 horses in the race.
- 29:08He says we're in great shape right now and we are ready.
- 29:11The Woodward, a waste for age race, should be a three horse contest between bid, Winter's Pale and speedy Dr. Patches.
- 29:18Elmline Stakes winner, Tamper and Phil, is also the winner, but will be scratched unless bid or Winter's Pale are withdrawn first.
- 29:28Linebacker John Mooring, touched by the Detroit Lions earlier this season,
- 29:32has signed with the injury-plagued Cleveland Browns to fill the vacancy left by Jerry Shirk.
- 29:36Mooring, a 6'3", 230 pounder, was released by the Lions after the first regular season game.
- 29:41And the 23-0 was an eighth round pick by Detroit last year.
- 29:46San Diego Clippers coach Paul Silas has announced his retirement as a player after 16 seasons.
- 29:52And brought some three NBA championship teams.
- 29:55Silas retired in the offseason as a player coach,
- 29:58but feels it would be impossible to devote his total energy to coaching if he is still active as a player.
- 30:04Silas was 17 games short of breaking John Hallercheck's record of 1,270 games.
- 30:10In 16 seasons, he scored 11,782 points and grabbed 12,357 rebounds.
- 30:21Well, in Wrigley Field, Chicago this afternoon, the Cubs came up with a two run, bottom of the line, 50-50.
- 30:26The Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.
- 30:28Fifth, the winner, and the star is the loser. That's a very tough defeat for the Phillies who are trailing by a game and a half.
- 30:36As activity started today, right now Montreal will be in St. Louis.
- 30:40So the Phillies now are two yards behind Montreal, depending on what happens in St. Louis later tonight.
- 30:46The plan will be in San Diego.
- 30:48The big one on the west coast of the National League, of course, is Cincinnati in Los Angeles.
- 30:53In Los Angeles, we have Houston by a full game. Houston will be in San Francisco.
- 30:59Those games will start until about 10.30 Baltimore time.
- 31:03Here's the first pitch to John Lornstein, and it's inside one ball with no strikes.
- 31:08The Brother Low comes in with a game of nine batting, 3-0-2.
- 31:16Next pitch to Lornstein, ball two, two balls and no strikes to go.
- 31:20There's a rumor afloat that in that game in Toronto last Saturday when the fog got so thick you couldn't see the outfielders.
- 31:27And every fly ball that's in the outfield was a dangerous adventure. Next pitch to call strike of the means to a London out.
- 31:34There's a rumor afloat that Lornstein was smart enough to plant three baseballs out into that field.
- 31:39Nobody was going to get anything by him in a heavy fog.
- 31:42Here's the two on delivery ground ball to the right side.
- 31:44It's picked up by Garcia. Flips it underhanded. Does they bury it first? And Lornstein is down 4-3.
- 31:50In fact, Bob Baylor made a catch down the line and was a great catch in that game.
- 31:55You just saw him come up at the last minute, and some of the Orioles were suspicious about Bobby Baylor the veteran.
- 32:01Maybe he had a baseball in his back pocket.
- 32:04Lornstein is down. The designated hitter, number 10. Jerry Crowley, the Orioles' designated hitter. The king of swing.
- 32:16299 hitter with high and low bounce at 41 RBI. The pitch to Crowley sails up side. One ball and no strikes to go. The on deck batter is Dan Grant.
- 32:26Next pitch is a call strike. One ball and one strike. Never put that aging veteran tag on Crowley.
- 32:38He's been around so long that people think that he's up in years, but he's not. He's younger than Al Bumper. He's the same age as Singleton.
- 32:45Here's the 1-1 pitch. Breaking pitch as well. Two balls and one strike to go.
- 32:50And he's got more than a few productive years left.
- 32:562-1 delivery all the way to Crowley, and he did not check his swing on time. Two balls and two strikes to go.
- 33:04There's a good chance that Crowley could be the regular designated hitter for the Orioles next year from the left side. That is barring a trade.
- 33:142-2 delivery fastball to the right side. Garcia makes a neat pick up. Throws to first in time. The throw is high, just high, but may very well hold on. Crowley goes down for three as did Lowenstein.
- 33:27That will bring up Dan Grant.
- 33:29That is 7th, the catcher, number 37, Dan Graham. Dan Graham hit his 12th home run of the year last night. That's the most for an Oriole catcher since Dave Duncan hit 12 home runs back in 1975.
- 33:45Jackson Tide to Dan Graham. Here's the pitch. Ground ball foul down the first baseline. Three runs on four hits for the Blue Jays. One run off, one hit for the Orioles.
- 33:59That was only the third home run of the season, the left field for Dan Graham. They play him to pull the ball in the right field usually. Here's the one strike pitch to Graham swinging out of it.
- 34:15Dan is batting 3-0-5 in his last 38 games, bringing his average up to 2-63 from 2-18. He has 36 RBIs in his last 37 games. Right now with two outs and nobody on, he's in the hole to Jackson Tide.
- 34:32Two strike delivery gets away from the catcher. So the count is one ball and two strikes. Graham is still alive. The sensei is on deck.
- 34:47The Blue Jays have lost 13 straight games here at Memorial Stadium. The last time they won, 2-0 victory. Typical Jim Palmer game. He lost it to Dave Lemenchek.
- 35:02Pitch to Graham and he fouls it and it looks like it might have come off the leg of the catcher Witt, Ernie Witt. One ball and two strikes to go.
- 35:15Witt's going to stand up and shake it off and Palermo will probably take a little more time before he settles down behind the plate just to give Ernie time to try to shake it off.
- 35:25Palermo is the umpire behind the plate. Al Clark is at first. Phillips is at second base and McCoy at third. One ball and two strikes to Dan Graham.
- 35:37Witt flashes the serve. Here's the pitch. Line drive, right field, that'll fall in for a base hit.
- 35:46Well in a 1-2 situation, the answer with the pitcher, but Graham just lines one off the right field for a base hit.
- 35:54Only the second or he'll hit of the night. Off of Jackson Tide.
- 36:02DeSensei, 2-44 batting average, 12 home runs, 53 RBI. And he's a 375 hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays this year.
- 36:13Graham takes the short lead at first base. Tom looks that way and here's the pitch to DeSensei. Swing and a miss and a ball with his way out of the strike zone.
- 36:31Melanger is on deck.
- 36:37One strike pitch, ground ball to the left side. The high hop played by Griffin, the throw to second base is in time to cut down Graham on the fourth and end the inning.
- 36:46At the end of two innings of play, the score remains Toronto 3 Baltimore 1.
- 36:50The Philadelphia Flyers have been fined $5,000 by the National Hockey League.
- 36:55The fine was levy because of the criticism by the Flyers of the National Hockey League officiating after the final game of the Stanley Cup Series this spring.
- 37:03In that series, the New York Islanders defeated the Flyers 4-2.
- 37:08The Fort Lauderdale Strikers may have a little bit of the New York Cosmos in them after all.
- 37:13Through the years, the Cosmos have resembled a long running soap opera, the shooting triangle of players, coaches, and upper management.
- 37:21But this time around, Coach Heinies Weiswolder has resorted some sense of order to the Cosmos and have abandoned most of the melodrama.
- 37:30Fort Lauderdale, getting ready for Sunday's soccer bowl in Washington, has earned its share of theatrical credits this season.
- 37:36Coach Cor Vanderhart has openly quarreled with his players.
- 37:40General Manager Bob Limahl has blamed Vanderhart for the team's erratic play, and that dispute had to be resolved by the owners.
- 37:47But the Strikers finished the regular season with an 18-14 record and won three straight playoff series against California, Edmonton, and San Diego to win the American Conference.
- 37:58The Detroit Giants have signed their number one draft choice this year. Larry Drew who sticks to and weighs 180.
- 38:05He played for Missouri where he set a career record for his fifth. No terms were announced.
- 38:11The two main rivals for the number one ranking in men's tennis, Bjorn Borg of Queens and John McEnroe of the United States, will play in the Six-Man International Tournament in Milan, Italy, November 27th through the 30th.
- 38:24Well, among the fans in the stadium tonight, a group from Villa Julie College has pre-game ceremonies.
- 38:29The students have presented a plaque to the Orioles expressing their support of the ball. Good idea.
- 38:35Big John lays it off Mayberry and Palmer's breaking pitch is high. One ball and no strikes to go.
- 38:41John walks his first time up. Palmer works again and the change up is high. Two balls and no strikes to go.
- 38:53They play Mayberry to go to right field.
- 39:07Duo delivery, a fast ball is a call strike as it catches the letters just on the other portion of the plate.
- 39:17Palmer's next pitch, a fast ball is popped up to the left side. The sensei will make the play just behind the bag of thirds and Mayberry is out on a pop-up.
- 39:31D. Braun, single to center field and drove in a run his first time up.
- 39:39A 2-13 hitter. Mollsby is on deck. Palmer's pitch, a fast ball, is ball one. One ball and no strikes to go.
- 39:55Jim is right back again and he's out of the strike zone again. So Palmer is definitely having control problems here in Baltimore tonight.
- 40:09Palmer and it's fouled off to the left side.
- 40:25Two-one pitch is on the way and it's high again. Three balls and one strike to go.
- 40:31Braun gets away from Palmer and I think we'll see somebody get up on the bullpen again. Here's the three-one delivery, a call strike.
- 40:39Three balls and two strikes to go.
- 40:45Braun steps up.
- 40:51What a great night for baseball in Baltimore. Wind is blowing right down the flagpole. Full-count pitch swings and a miss.
- 41:00So Braun is a strike up and Mollsby comes up. He doubles down the line and right field his first time up, scoring two runs.
- 41:21Palmer now will look into Drain Graham for the side. Here comes the first pitch to voice.
- 41:26It's high. When Palmer's been out of the strike zone tonight, usually he's been upstairs on occasion way upstairs.
- 41:32One and all to come. The next pitch, and they popped him up out in the shallow center field.
- 41:39Langer is going back. Bumpery is coming in. Langer will give way to Bumpery. He makes the catch.
- 41:43The Blue Jays are retired and the third at the end of two and a half score is Toronto three, Baltimore one.
- 41:49Thomas Hollywood Henderson is at liberty again. The controversial linebacker has been put on waivers by the San Francisco 49ers.
- 41:57Henderson signed with the 49ers this year after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys. That was following a dispute with Coach Tom Landry.
- 42:06That batting race in the National League has thinned out just a little bit.
- 42:11Templeton and St. Louis and Brooklyn and Chicago were just hundreds of a percentage point apart earlier in the week.
- 42:17But Templeton now hitting 325. Buckner hitting 322. Heath Hernandez at St. Louis is at 318.
- 42:24Lakeland Bride of Philadelphia hitting at 314 and Cruz of Houston at 313.
- 42:30George Brett of Kansas City who went two for three in the game against California Thursday is hitting 398.
- 42:38And that ballgame involving Kansas City getting underway very shortly.
- 42:43Kansas City at home and hosting the Oakland A's where Brian Kingman will be on the mound for the A's and Paul Slytherin for Kansas City.
- 42:51That game will be getting underway in about 15 minutes or so.
- 42:55Cecil Cooper of Milwaukee is next in the American League at 355. Miguel Delaunay of Cleveland hitting at 349.
- 43:03Mickey Rivers of Texas at 331 and Rod Carew of California at 331.
- 43:08You know for years the National League always had a higher batting average through the top eight or nine hitters.
- 43:14But this year the lowest of the top five in the American League, that's Rod Carew of California at 331,
- 43:21is hitting six points better than Templeton leading in the National League at 325.
- 43:28Well we'd like to extend our very best yet well wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hitler who are both recouping for illnesses at Baltimore County Hospital.
- 43:43Yet well soon Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hitler, there are denorial fans, I know they're listening to that.
- 43:50The Langer lead it off, the first pitch to mark is the ball, one ball and no strikes to go.
- 43:58The Langer went three for four last night against the Tigers.
- 44:03Jackson Todd and his next pitch to the Langer is ball two, two balls and no strikes.
- 44:10Todd's giving up two hits, a single to Bumbray, and a single to Dan Grant.
- 44:22Soon as we have a score out of Yankee Stadium in New York, Yankees and the Red Sox will pass it along to the Yankees.
- 44:33Soon as we have a score out of Yankee Stadium in New York, Yankees and the Red Sox will pass it along to you.
- 44:44Two-oh delivery to Blander and it's low, three balls and no strikes to come.
- 44:59Three-oh pitch to Blander, he was taking all the way and it's a called strike on the inside corner, three balls and one strike to come.
- 45:12Blander has looked up to Ripken to get the sign, let's see if they'll have the green light this time.
- 45:16Three-one pitch is on the way, here it is and it's a called strike, three balls and two strikes to come.
- 45:24Blander was taking all the way.
- 45:27The mark will be followed by Bumbray and Dower.
- 45:31Three-two pitch, it's line foul, now towards the third base area by Cal Ripken.
- 45:37Thinking about Cal Ripken, young Cal who has finished the season in Charlotte, has been doing a little working out here at the park the past few days.
- 45:46Boy has he put on an awesome display and he hit the ball a ton.
- 45:51Tom Giordano said yesterday he hit 14 over the fence.
- 46:00Poke out to Blander.
- 46:03Six pitches high and inside a Blander walk.
- 46:14That's the first walk given out by Jackson Tom and here comes Bumbray.
- 46:21Bumbray has singled in the first inning, no second base.
- 46:28Was advanced to third as Dower grounded off the score and has singled and grounded off to the right side, accounting for the Orioles only run on the night.
- 46:36Blander's at first. Here's the pitch to Bumbray, squares the button, it's foul, that's the third base line.
- 46:49Pretty nice gesture by Bumbray, picked up Ernie Witt's face mask, fell into the dirt, knocked Giordano and hit him back to it.
- 46:59A few guys in this league that might step on it. Blander again with the lead at first.
- 47:07One strike pitch and it's time for a ball and there was no indication of a bump that time by Bumbray.
- 47:13Again he'll look up to Cal Ripken to get the sign.
- 47:18Some years ago in this game Tom, a fellow would lean over and pick up the other guy's mask and hand it to him and probably would have been fine.
- 47:29Don't do anything at all to make his job easier, make him bend over and pick it up in his cell.
- 47:32You know who feels that way, don't you? The fellow coaching up in first base, Frank Robinson.
- 47:38Here's the one-one pitch, it's ball two, two balls and one strike to Cal.
- 47:42Whenever Frank got hit by a pitch, he never charged the mound or anything like that. He'd dig in on him and on more than one occasion he'd go deep.
- 47:53The look to Blander at first, two-one pitch is on the way to Bumbray, fly ball well hit right field.
- 48:00Right field are going back, still going back, that one is gone.
- 48:03Now now Bumbray's home run to right center field. Blander will run third and he'll score.
- 48:12And here comes Darrell Bumbray with his ninth home run of the year and we got a tight ball game.
- 48:33Well Bumbray has just felt it number nine into the seat.
- 48:43Three to three and now it's the batter. There's nobody else.
- 48:47Breaking pitch to Dower is high.
- 48:54The on deck batter is single.
- 48:58That matches Bumbray's career high home run. Nine, here's the next pitch to Dower and he fouls one back.
- 49:04In 1976, now that nine-round difference.
- 49:13Three to three, three runs on four hits for the Blue Jays, three runs on three hits for the Orioles.
- 49:21It's to Dower, fly ball center field, Bobby Blander has it measured.
- 49:32What a year Bumbray has had. You have to sit down this year and vote for the most valuable Oriole player.
- 49:37You're going to look very closely at Bumbray. You'll have to look very closely at Eddie Murray.
- 49:44And Steve So will be given some consideration.
- 49:48So Dower is out on a fly ball to center field and that will bring up Singleton. He grounded out his first time up.
- 49:56Here's the first pitch to Kett. It's a called strike.
- 50:04Bumbray now has 183 hits. 17 more to reach the magic 200 number.
- 50:10Hitch to Singleton is lawed in. One ball one strike to count.
- 50:14The club record is 194. That belongs to Brooks Robinson.
- 50:21One-one pitch to Singleton. Swing and it looks like Singleton will try to get into the season as well.
- 50:26One ball and two strikes to count.
- 50:32Eddie Murray is on deck.
- 50:36We're back at square one.
- 50:39A pitch to Singleton. Ryan Dyer left field base hit.
- 50:44Singleton goes to the opposite field.
- 50:48Ryan Dyer to left field. The inning started with the Lancer walk.
- 50:51Bumbray then went deep. Now he's out on a fly ball to center field.
- 50:55Now Singleton has singles. Here comes Eddie and you'll hear the chant.
- 51:07I don't know if Eddie was pulling my leg or not today.
- 51:10There's players in the clubhouse before the game.
- 51:12Eddie was talking about getting a new car.
- 51:15Nobody said he was going to get a Mercedes.
- 51:17Eddie said, no, and I said, Eddie, you're getting a new car?
- 51:19He said, yeah. I said, what kind? He said a Rolls Royce.
- 51:24I'll tell you what. When he signs a new contract, he could probably buy two.
- 51:30I have a tendency to think he was pulling the old way car.
- 51:35It's a three-three game. Singleton's at first base.
- 51:38There's one out and Eddie Murray's out.
- 51:40Murray was out on a fly ball. The left field was first time up.
- 51:44Now look to Singleton. Now Eddie will step out.
- 51:48Eddie is very methodical when he's up at the plate.
- 51:51He'll step out after every pitch.
- 51:54Usually he'll walk to the front of the batting block.
- 51:57Again, the look to Singleton. Here's the pitch to Murray.
- 52:00That's the ball. One ball and no strikes.
- 52:02He'll kick a little dirt with one foot down the other.
- 52:04He'll go back into the corner and kick the dust out of his baseball shoes before he'll step in again.
- 52:10He does it after almost every pitch.
- 52:14One out, delivery to Murray, and swings and fouls one back.
- 52:17Let's see if he does it now. There he goes, one foot down the other.
- 52:20He'll go back into the corner of the batter's box.
- 52:22Takes the bat. See if he'll knock the dirt out again.
- 52:27There he goes. Right foot down the left foot.
- 52:30Back to the right foot again.
- 52:31Not quite as bad as that fellow Mike Hardgrove at the Cleveland Indians.
- 52:39Next pitch to Murray and he fouls another one back.
- 52:42And he'll go through the routine again.
- 52:45He actually has time to get a fight to eat when Hardgrove is up.
- 52:55Lowenstein is the on-deck batter.
- 52:59All knotted up to three a piece and he's trying to change that.
- 53:03Looks to single it in first.
- 53:04Here comes the one-two delivery.
- 53:06Fishes foul ball on the ground up to the first base side and into the seat.
- 53:17The opposing pitchers are not too crazy about the time at any case to get ready.
- 53:21I'll tell you, whatever he's doing, it's working.
- 53:23One-two pitchers on the way to Murray.
- 53:27Swing and a miss.
- 53:29Strike three and Eddie's down on the stretch.
- 53:31Second out of the inning and that'll bring up John Lowenstein.
- 53:34He grabbed it out on the first side.
- 53:36The Orioles scored a run of the first inning.
- 53:39And the Toronto's looking to bring it up and lead.
- 53:41Swing of the bat.
- 53:43Bumpery is nice on the run of the first five up here at the third.
- 53:47And my good friend, the mayor of Vymontown, Bimmy DiPietro, has just come up to see us.
- 53:53Here's the first pitch to Lowenstein.
- 53:55Ground ball right side and it's going south.
- 54:03One strike to count to Lowenstein.
- 54:09You know, when you look at baseball's free agent market, boy, that's a way to build a team.
- 54:14Well, maybe not always.
- 54:17At bat right now, Lowenstein.
- 54:19What a job he's done for the Orioles.
- 54:21Picked up by Hank Peters for the $20,000 on a waiver truck.
- 54:24In the on-deck circle, Jerry Crowley.
- 54:26The Orioles did not have to sign a big check to get Jerry.
- 54:29Looked to burst the pitch to Lowenstein.
- 54:31Swing and a miss.
- 54:32Two strikes to count.
- 54:33Eddie Allen was done so well for the Orioles.
- 54:38Picked up from the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
- 54:41From the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
- 54:52Whip will flash the sign.
- 54:54Looked to burst the pitch.
- 54:55Two strikes to count to Lowenstein.
- 54:56Here's the next pitch to John Lloyd.
- 54:58Right center field made pitch.
- 55:00Singleton will hold up a second base.
- 55:02Will the Orioles stay alive here on the third of it?
- 55:05Singleton is now at second base.
- 55:08Lowenstein is at first.
- 55:10And here comes the Crow.
- 55:12Terry Brown without his first time up.
- 55:15This summer, Terry had a baseball school that was held at
- 55:18Mercy High School on off the Lock Raven football park.
- 55:21And it was a major success.
- 55:23I think he'll do it again next year.
- 55:27Brown is at first and second for the Crow.
- 55:29And here's the pitch to count.
- 55:31Brown is at first and second for the Crow.
- 55:35And here's the pitch to Crowley.
- 55:36And it's a ball.
- 55:37One ball and no strikes to count.
- 55:39As the designated hitter, he bats 304.
- 55:42And as the pitch hitter, considered probably one of the
- 55:45best if not the best in the game.
- 55:47He's batting 321.
- 55:49Lowenstein at first.
- 55:50Singleton second.
- 55:51Here's the one ball pitch to Crowley.
- 55:53They pop him up at the shallow left field.
- 55:55The left fielder comes on.
- 55:56Hudson puts the glove up and makes the catch.
- 55:59Crowley and the Orioles are down with a third, but not
- 56:01before the Orioles come up with two runs at the end of three.
- 56:03Baltimore three and Toronto three.
- 56:08This is Neil Dupree from American Entertainment Radio.
- 56:10I'm George Engel.
- 56:11The alarm is over around Damascus, Arkansas.
- 56:13The people who live near the Titan missile site have gone
- 56:15home again with assurance that everything's under control
- 56:17after last night's fire and fuel explosion.
- 56:19The airport says no damage to the warhead, but ABC's John
- 56:22McCrutty has learned it was close at best.
- 56:24ABC News has learned that not only was there a five-megaton
- 56:27nuclear warhead atop the Titan missile that caught fire last
- 56:30night, but that when the fuel in the missile exploded, that
- 56:33warhead was catapulted right out of the silo onto the ground
- 56:37nearby.
- 56:38Emergency Air Force teams determined that there was no
- 56:41radioactivity around the warhead, and it was then moved
- 56:44out of the missile site to an unknown location for further
- 56:47examination.
- 56:48John McCrutty, ABC News, the Pentagon.
- 56:50Reagan and Anderson are preparing for the debate while
- 56:53Reagan's campaign chief accuses the president of a dirty trick
- 56:55by mentioning racism in connection with a GOP candidate.
- 56:58The House today okayed two super funds for cleaning up oil
- 57:01and chemical spills in America's waterways.
- 57:03I'm George Engel, ABC News.
- 57:06Taking a look at the upcoming schedule for football games on
- 57:09the parade of sports.
- 57:11On Saturday, actually it'll be Sunday UTC, Sunday at 0-1-3-0.
- 57:17I must give you the correct UTC time, Sunday at 0-0-3-0.
- 57:21College football, 10 states at Texas A&M.
- 57:25Then on Sunday, the National Football League doubleheader
- 57:28first came to St. Louis Cardinals at the Detroit Lions,
- 57:31and then the New England Patriots at the Seattle Seahawks.
- 57:34And then the Monday night game, the New York Giants at
- 57:37Philadelphia.
- 57:40The Phillies were defeated by the Cubs by a count of four to
- 57:42three in some parts of Philadelphia.
- 57:44The Pirates and the Mets were at it right out of Pittsburgh.
- 57:46The Pirates scored the same count as the Orioles were in there.
- 57:51My James behind the division leading Montreal Expos,
- 57:54and they are now leading the Mets 2-0 at the end of two innings
- 57:57of play.
- 57:58We have not had any at all from New York.
- 58:00Others are back down to the Red Sox.
- 58:02This is the first inning the Yankees have had.
- 58:04Okay, Tom.
- 58:05Thank you, Chuck.
- 58:06Bob Baylor is going to lead it off for the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 58:09Three to three game as we go to the top of the fourth.
- 58:11Here's Ballmer's first pitch to Baylor.
- 58:13There's the line drive to center field base hit Baylor.
- 58:17So, an extra for the Blue Jays in the fourth of this three-three
- 58:20game.
- 58:21Paul Hutchins is now the better.
- 58:23Hutchins single his first time up for second.
- 58:27The three Toronto runs coming in the first set.
- 58:30The Orioles scoring one in the first and down eight twice in
- 58:33the third.
- 58:39Hutchins single his first time up.
- 58:42Three runs on five hits for Baltimore.
- 58:44Three runs on five hits for Toronto.
- 58:47Ernie Winn is on deck.
- 58:51Ari Holden with the runner in first base.
- 58:53There's the pitch to the right-handed batter.
- 58:55Eight players to butt at the goal front.
- 59:04They're playing Hutchins straight away on left.
- 59:07The ball is shaded to the left-field side and single
- 59:12straight away in right-field.
- 59:15If he goes to front again, Hollis will just look
- 59:17about Baylor back to the back and first.
- 59:21Kenny will look that way.
- 59:22Here's the pitch and it's now back.
- 59:25Baylor has played every position for the Toronto Blue
- 59:28Jays this year with the exception of catcher and
- 59:32first thing.
- 59:33He's even pitched a few in.
- 59:36Not mistaken, he's been at three games in the pitcher.
- 59:43Two strikes to count to the batter, Paul Hutchins.
- 59:46And he fouls another one back.
- 59:56Off-hitter has been at three games in the pitcher,
- 59:59two in the third inning.
- 1:00:00And he's giving up two runs on four hits.
- 1:00:02There's a walk and no strikeout.
- 1:00:09Hudson is in the hole, two strikes to count.
- 1:00:12Palmer shakes off Dan Grant.
- 1:00:14Now he's ready to go to work.
- 1:00:15Here's the pitch and it's a called strike three.
- 1:00:19A good change up from Palmer to Hudson.
- 1:00:23And it's the fourth strikeout of the night for Jim Palmer.
- 1:00:32Ernie Witt walks in the second inning.
- 1:00:40With a left-handed batter, a dead full hitter to right field.
- 1:00:50On deck now is Alfredo Griffith.
- 1:00:57Red Sox has failed to score in the first inning
- 1:00:59in Yankee Stadium tonight.
- 1:01:01Here's the pitch to Ernie Witt.
- 1:01:03It's a ball, one ball and no strikes to count.
- 1:01:08Ernie Witt once played with the Boston Red Sox in 1975.
- 1:01:15Dennis Martinez is up again with the Oriole Bullfeds.
- 1:01:20Throw to first and Baylor has jumped back in time.
- 1:01:25Baylor walked against Palmer in last Sunday's game.
- 1:01:28Stole a base and as Graham threw the ball away,
- 1:01:31went to third base and then scored on a sacrifice fly
- 1:01:33for the only other run off of Palmer
- 1:01:35besides the day-bury home run.
- 1:01:37Throw to first again and Baylor is back.
- 1:01:42Think about Palmer pitching in South Buck.
- 1:01:45You think it was Saturday afternoon here at Memorial Stadium.
- 1:01:47Nationally televised game, Palmer loses to the Red Sox
- 1:01:49going the distance.
- 1:01:51Again, the throw to first on the side.
- 1:01:53Jim lost that game one to nothing.
- 1:01:56The only run scoring as a result of the Estremski doubles
- 1:01:59on left field, actually it was the Blue's
- 1:02:01that are playing Estremski to go to right.
- 1:02:04They went to left field and that proved to be the only run
- 1:02:06of the game for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:02:10That's where the team was healthy.
- 1:02:12Throw to first again and Bob Baylor is back.
- 1:02:15At the end of one at Yankee Stadium,
- 1:02:21there is no score in the game.
- 1:02:28This time, Palmer just stares Baylor back to the bag
- 1:02:31and which steps out.
- 1:02:34Dennis Martinez is up for the second time
- 1:02:36behind at the bullpen.
- 1:02:37He was up for the first inning
- 1:02:39and again here in the fourth inning.
- 1:02:42Again, Palmer looks to Graham.
- 1:02:44Now it looks to first.
- 1:02:45Here comes the one ball delivery.
- 1:02:46It's high and away.
- 1:02:47Two balls and no strikes to count.
- 1:03:05A pitch and he fouls it back
- 1:03:07until the count will go to two and one.
- 1:03:09A night game tomorrow,
- 1:03:10then the Blue Jays and the Orioles on Sunday afternoon.
- 1:03:14Then the Boston Red Sox move into town
- 1:03:16for what could be three extremely important games.
- 1:03:21Monday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday night.
- 1:03:24The Orioles then will go on the road to Cleveland and Boston
- 1:03:27before returning home to close out the season
- 1:03:29against the Cleveland Indians
- 1:03:31on the third, fourth and fifth of October.
- 1:03:33That's on the weekend.
- 1:03:36Throw to first and Baylor's back again.
- 1:03:42I tell you, Baylor at first base
- 1:03:44is really nagging Palmer.
- 1:03:49Again the throw and Baylor's back.
- 1:03:52I guess Jim just has a picture of Baylor
- 1:03:54running down to second base on the stolen base last Sunday
- 1:03:57then getting to third and scoring an unearned run.
- 1:04:05There is one up, two and one on the count to Ernie Witt.
- 1:04:08We'll get around to him one of these days.
- 1:04:11Another throw to first.
- 1:04:13Palmer may throw more balls to first in this inning
- 1:04:16when he does the home plate.
- 1:04:26You'll watch pitches finally on the way the runner goes.
- 1:04:28There's Graham's throw to second base
- 1:04:30and Baylor dives in safely with a stolen base
- 1:04:33just ahead of the tag by Valencia.
- 1:04:36You get the feel when the Palmer definitely knew
- 1:04:38he was going to go two and two now to count to Witt.
- 1:04:41That's the 11th and 12th stolen base
- 1:04:43on the year for Bob Baylor.
- 1:04:56Two balls and two strikes to count to Ernie Witt.
- 1:04:58Baylor now at second base.
- 1:05:03Alfredo Griffin is standing,
- 1:05:05observing every thing Jim Palmer does very closely.
- 1:05:11Here's the 2-2 pitch, ground ball to the right side.
- 1:05:13Murray can't make a play on it.
- 1:05:15It's down into a right field for the base hit.
- 1:05:16Baylor rounds third and he'll score the go-ahead run.
- 1:05:20On a single to right by Ernie Witt that gets by Eddie Murray.
- 1:05:24Baylor comes all the way home and now you know
- 1:05:26why Palmer was so concerned about that runner at first base.
- 1:05:32And here comes the skipper.
- 1:05:34Earl Weaver walks slowly to the mound.
- 1:05:39And that could be it for Jim Palmer.
- 1:05:44And that is it for Jim Palmer.
- 1:05:46Weaver decides to make the move as the Blue Jays
- 1:05:48go up the front four to three.
- 1:05:50The wall of this picture makes the state of the ball
- 1:05:52much more pause for this message.
- 1:05:55Like Smith of Philadelphia, the leading home run hitter
- 1:05:57in the major leagues with 39.
- 1:05:59Bob Horner of Atlanta, next with 33 in the national league.
- 1:06:02Mercy of Atlanta and Baker of Los Angeles, 29 each.
- 1:06:06Veggie Jackson is the American League home run leader with 37.
- 1:06:09Ogilvy of Milwaukee with 36.
- 1:06:11Thomas of Milwaukee with 35.
- 1:06:14The RBI leader in the major league,
- 1:06:16Peter Cooper of Milwaukee with 112.
- 1:06:19Also in the American League, Oliver of Texas with 106.
- 1:06:22Ogilvy of Milwaukee with 102.
- 1:06:25Mike Schmidt is the National League RBI leader with 105.
- 1:06:29Andric of St. Louis with 102.
- 1:06:31And Garvey of Los Angeles with 97.
- 1:06:34On the floor, Montreal is the National League
- 1:06:37stolen base leader.
- 1:06:39He now has 92.
- 1:06:40Omar Moreno, Pittsburgh next at 88.
- 1:06:42Collins of Cincinnati with 69.
- 1:06:46Anderson of Oakland leads the American League
- 1:06:48in stolen bases with 81.
- 1:06:50Jackson of Kansas City has 69.
- 1:06:52And Delaunay of Cleveland has 55 stolen bases.
- 1:06:57Martinez.
- 1:07:00From the Oriole bullpen in relief of starter Jim Pollard
- 1:07:03comes Dennis Martinez, former tonight,
- 1:07:05three in the third, sixes.
- 1:07:07Two walks, four strikeouts, and four runs.
- 1:07:11He's responsible for her.
- 1:07:12He went over there at first base.
- 1:07:14And from the bullpen comes the young right-hander,
- 1:07:16Dennis Martinez.
- 1:07:18Martinez on the year for the Orioles
- 1:07:21has had kind of an up and down sort of a year.
- 1:07:25It started on the down side because he had shoulder
- 1:07:28and arm problems.
- 1:07:29Man muddied for quite a little while.
- 1:07:31And then as he got back in shape,
- 1:07:33he seemed to pitch reasonably well.
- 1:07:35And now in the late months of the season,
- 1:07:37or weeks of the season, he has been assigned to the bullpen
- 1:07:40because there's just no room in the starting rotation
- 1:07:43for Dennis Martinez.
- 1:07:45There are some fellows who can start
- 1:07:47and come out of the bullpen.
- 1:07:49And there are some fellows who find that that very difficult.
- 1:07:53And it seems to be, as Dennis' case,
- 1:07:55it's a little difficult for him to come out of the bullpen.
- 1:07:58He has won five, lost four.
- 1:08:00This is his 20th ballgame.
- 1:08:02He's made 11 starts.
- 1:08:0473 and two-third innings of work.
- 1:08:06He has pitched to an earned run of 4.64.
- 1:08:10Now one out, Toronto four, the Orioles three.
- 1:08:13Runner at first base is Ernie Witt.
- 1:08:15Alfredo Griffin will be the first batter to face Dennis Martinez.
- 1:08:19And we'll go right back to Tom Lahr.
- 1:08:21Thank you, Chuck.
- 1:08:22Alfredo Griffin looking for his first hit on the line.
- 1:08:27He's 0 for 2.
- 1:08:30Runner at first base is Witt, and a fastball swing and a miss.
- 1:08:33Dennis had some good velocity on that one.
- 1:08:35One strike to count to Alfredo Griffin.
- 1:08:40Dennis Martinez in relief of Jim Palmer.
- 1:08:43The outfield is pretty well spread out against Griffin.
- 1:08:47Singleton is well off the line and right.
- 1:08:50One strike pitch to Alfredo.
- 1:08:52Just misses one ball and one strike to count.
- 1:08:54Mullenstein straight away at shallow and left field.
- 1:08:59And Bumbry has cut to the left field side against the switching ribbon
- 1:09:02who is batting left-handed against Jim Palmer.
- 1:09:07One-one pitch from Dennis' slider.
- 1:09:09Swing and a miss.
- 1:09:10One ball and two strikes to count.
- 1:09:12At the end of an inning and a half, still no score.
- 1:09:15The game between the Yankees and the Red Sox and Senway Park.
- 1:09:25Witt leads off first base.
- 1:09:27Dennis will gaze that way.
- 1:09:28Here comes the one-two delivery.
- 1:09:30Swing and a miss.
- 1:09:32Strike three.
- 1:09:35I'll tell you, Dennis looks better against Alfredo Griffin
- 1:09:37than he did the entire day on Sunday in Toronto.
- 1:09:41D'Amaso Garcia is up with two outs and a runner in first.
- 1:09:45Garcia, Singleton scored in the first inning
- 1:09:47and went down on strikes to Jim Palmer in the second.
- 1:10:00Garcia, right-handed hitter.
- 1:10:01Here's the pitch and he fouls it.
- 1:10:04Fouls it into the box.
- 1:10:05One strike to count.
- 1:10:07The outfield is playing just about the same way
- 1:10:09for D'Amaso Garcia as they did for the left-hander Griffin.
- 1:10:14Hollenstein is backed up a bit in left field.
- 1:10:17He played Alfredo rather shallow.
- 1:10:22Garcia, two-eighty-two hitter, has some power.
- 1:10:24Four home runs and 44 RPIs.
- 1:10:26He fouls one into the upper deck.
- 1:10:28So the count will go to two strikes,
- 1:10:30and the advantage in this situation is to Dennis Martinez.
- 1:10:34Graham now sets the sign and the target for Dennis.
- 1:10:49He'll look to first base.
- 1:10:50Here comes the two-strike pitch.
- 1:10:52The throw to second as the runner goes, and he's tagged out.
- 1:10:57So that will retire the side as Ernie Witt is caught stealing.
- 1:11:01And at the end of three and a half, the score is Toronto 4,
- 1:11:04Baltimore 3.
- 1:11:07Steve Carlton of Philadelphia leads the National League
- 1:11:09in pitching victories, 22-8.
- 1:11:12Jerry Royce of Los Angeles, Jim Bibbia of Pittsburgh,
- 1:11:14next at 17-5.
- 1:11:16And Nikro of Houston is at 16-12.
- 1:11:20The winningest pitcher in the Major League,
- 1:11:22Steve Stone of Baltimore at 23-7.
- 1:11:26John of New York at 21-8, North of Oakland at 20-8.
- 1:11:30Bruce Sutter of Chicago leads the National League in saves
- 1:11:33with 26.
- 1:11:34Huma Cincinnati and Allen of New York have 22.
- 1:11:37Fingers of San Diego has 21 saves.
- 1:11:40Dan Clusenberry of Kansas City is the Major League leader
- 1:11:43in saves with 33.
- 1:11:45Gossage of New York with 28.
- 1:11:47Palmer of Chicago with 27.
- 1:11:53This is Friday, September 19th, stateside,
- 1:11:56and on this date in baseball, in 1968,
- 1:12:00Danny McClain of the Detroit Tigers became the American League's
- 1:12:02biggest winner since 1931 when he posted his 31st victory
- 1:12:06of the season, a 6-2 decision over the New York Yankees.
- 1:12:10Nicky Mantle of the Yanks cracked his 535th rear home run,
- 1:12:14enabling him to move into third place on the all-time list.
- 1:12:18So on this date in baseball, in 1968,
- 1:12:25San Diego Clippers head coach Paul Silas announced his retirement
- 1:12:28as a player Friday after 16 seasons and lost on three championship
- 1:12:32teams in the NBA.
- 1:12:34He said it was just too difficult to both coach and play.
- 1:12:40Well, we're very happy to recognize the presence tonight
- 1:12:42at Memorial Stadium of the Golden Girls.
- 1:12:45They're 12 of them.
- 1:12:46They're from the Catonsville Recreation Council.
- 1:12:49They're at the game.
- 1:12:50They were the nine 10-year-old champions.
- 1:12:52We're very happy to have them here tonight.
- 1:12:54Hope that they'll enjoy themselves and that they can come back again.
- 1:12:57Howard Oaks, I know, is having a good time tonight.
- 1:13:00Howard is from Catonsville.
- 1:13:01He's here this evening with a number of his neighbors and friends
- 1:13:04in the Schlitz Block in Section 6.
- 1:13:07They are guests of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
- 1:13:10Okay, Tom.
- 1:13:12Well, Jack, with Mimi DiPietro, my guest tonight,
- 1:13:15I might as well mention that the 15th District Democratic Club of Essex
- 1:13:19is represented here tonight, 44 Strong.
- 1:13:22And they're wishing the Orioles well.
- 1:13:25And the birds need to get something going right here.
- 1:13:27They're down 4-3 as we go into the bottom of the fourth inning,
- 1:13:30and Dan Graham is going to lead it off.
- 1:13:36Graham's single his first time up to right field,
- 1:13:38and the pitch to Dan is low, one ball and no strikes to come.
- 1:13:42While I have Mimi here, I just want to remind you
- 1:13:44that I know the season's going to be over soon,
- 1:13:46and there are an awful lot of people coming into our town on weekends
- 1:13:48throughout the course of the season to see the Orioles.
- 1:13:53Here's the one-ball pitch to Graham.
- 1:13:55High-fly ball off to right field, going to stay in the park.
- 1:13:58Moseby backing, makes the catch with one hand, and Graham is off.
- 1:14:02Even though the season will be over in a few weeks,
- 1:14:05maybe a month or so if we happen to get into the playoffs of the World Series,
- 1:14:08I want you to take the opportunity if you live in Washington or Pennsylvania
- 1:14:11or Delaware through the fall season to come to Baltimore just for a visit.
- 1:14:17I'll tell you what we have done in the downtown area of this city
- 1:14:20is recognized worldwide.
- 1:14:23Here's the pitch to DeSensei.
- 1:14:25Ground ball left side by Howell, a third out into left field.
- 1:14:28Where a base hits, DeSensei rounds the bag at first, and he'll hold up.
- 1:14:32DeSensei, set a scorching grounder to the left side.
- 1:14:35Howell on a diving play, got the glove on it.
- 1:14:39It then cams off to the right by Alfredo Griffin out into left field
- 1:14:43for DeSensei hits.
- 1:14:45And the jewel of Baltimore City is the Inner Harbor Harbor play.
- 1:14:50You owe it to yourself to come to our town on a weekend or at any time
- 1:14:53just to take a look and see what has happened.
- 1:14:57And remember, if you're coming to see the Orioles play,
- 1:14:59make Baltimore part of your day, downtown Baltimore especially.
- 1:15:05DeSensei is at first base, Villanger is up.
- 1:15:07Here's the pitch to Mark, and it's a call strike on a fastball.
- 1:15:12Villanger walks his first time up on the third inning.
- 1:15:15Four to three, Toronto.
- 1:15:19A look to DeSensei.
- 1:15:21Here's the pitch to Villanger, and it's a ball, one ball and one strike to come.
- 1:15:25Four runs on six hits for the Jays, three on six for the Orioles.
- 1:15:39And a look to DeSensei, here's the one-one pitch, it's inside,
- 1:15:42two balls and one strike to come.
- 1:15:47Jackson Todd works very well against the Orioles last Sunday in Toronto,
- 1:15:52giving up two runs and eight in the third inning, home runs by Eddie Murray.
- 1:15:58Here's the pitch to Villanger, ground ball over the head of the third baseman,
- 1:16:03Howell, who will make the fourth play on DeSensei.
- 1:16:06He's trying to decide just a soft chopping ground ball to the left side of the mound.
- 1:16:11It looked for a moment like Alfredo Griffin was going to come in to make the play,
- 1:16:15but out of nowhere comes Roy Howell to pick it up and throw out the lead runner.
- 1:16:19So DeSensei is cut down and Villanger reaches on the fourth.
- 1:16:30How bummer he is to the batter, he's two for two tonight.
- 1:16:34Singles stole the base and scored a run of the first inning and a two-run homer in the third.
- 1:16:42Villanger leads at first base with two outs.
- 1:16:45Here's the pitch to Bumbridge, where's the bump and he takes the pitch to tie,
- 1:16:48one ball and no strikes to come, now or is on deck.
- 1:16:57Two completed, Yankee Stadium, no score on the game.
- 1:17:00Villanger goes at first base, here's the throw, Mark slides and he's safe.
- 1:17:07Villanger steals the base and that's number six on the year for Mark.
- 1:17:13So Villanger, the tie run, is now in scoring position at second.
- 1:17:22The count now to Bumbridge, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:17:29Villanger takes a bit of a breather at second base.
- 1:17:34Bumbridge steps back in, Villanger with the lead at second.
- 1:17:38Cobb to look to second base, here comes the two-oh pitch to Bumbridge,
- 1:17:41a tie ball free on a breaking pitch, three balls and no strikes to come.
- 1:17:57Bumbridge with again will set the target after he gives the sign.
- 1:18:01Villanger at second, three-oh delivery to Bumbridge, he was taking all the way,
- 1:18:05the pitch is flowing in and now walks.
- 1:18:08So the Orioles got a bit of a fire going here on the fourth inning with two outs.
- 1:18:14Bumbridge been aboard every time he's been up tonight.
- 1:18:18Rams start at the inning, he was out on a fly ball to right field, a sensei,
- 1:18:23he's single, he went to Dower tonight, has grounded out,
- 1:18:31has been out on a fly ball to center field.
- 1:18:33Here's the first pitch to Dower, one ball to Cobb.
- 1:18:37The sensei was cut down on the fours, Villanger reached, and now Bumbridge is one.
- 1:18:42Single in the on-deck batter, one ball and no strikes to Cobb to Rich Dower.
- 1:18:48The runners at first and second, a pitch to Dower and it almost cut away from the catcher
- 1:18:54so the count goes to two and oh.
- 1:19:03With runners in scoring position this year, Dower, a fellow at the plate,
- 1:19:07is batting three-forty-six, forty-four to one-twenty-seven.
- 1:19:13Villanger at second and Bumbridge at first, good speed on the bases, two and oh the count to Dower.
- 1:19:18Here comes the next pitch to Dower, face hit left field, Villanger's around third,
- 1:19:23Villanger is headed home, here comes the throw, Villanger hits the home plate safely,
- 1:19:28and it's a fly ball game at four-four.
- 1:19:33Now Dower does it again, ties the game up, a face hit to left field.
- 1:19:42And I want to tell you, Villanger was flying around that bank at third.
- 1:19:48He didn't slide.
- 1:19:53And it's a four-four game, and as we mentioned to you a moment ago,
- 1:19:57it's a three-forty-six batting average for Dower with runners in scoring position.
- 1:20:02Well, up that little more now.
- 1:20:05Can't single him a batter. Here comes Dennis Menke, pitching coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 1:20:14He's walking slowly out to the mound, there is activity.
- 1:20:18Schraub is up and working, and Paul Mirabella, Schraub and Mirabella,
- 1:20:24are working in the Toronto Blue Jays bullfist.
- 1:20:31Dower is tying up with two outs.
- 1:20:35Dower is single to left field, and now Ken Singleton is a batter.
- 1:20:42Singleton grabbing out his first time up, and single to left field, opposite field, single his next time up.
- 1:20:52And you just kind of have the feeling that sometime real soon,
- 1:20:55Ken Singleton is going to have them ducking in the bleachers.
- 1:20:59Dower is at second base, and Dower is at first.
- 1:21:03Four-to-four game.
- 1:21:06Here's the pitch to Singleton, and it's a ball-one.
- 1:21:09One ball and no strikes to count. Eddie Murray is on deck.
- 1:21:20One-all delivery is on the way to Ken Singleton with a called strike,
- 1:21:24a change-up from Jackson's side.
- 1:21:34The runners are first and second. Singleton awaits the one-one pitch, and it's high.
- 1:21:39Two balls and one strike to count.
- 1:21:41Four runs on six hits for Toronto, four on seven for the Orioles.
- 1:21:54Dower and Bumrey with their lead.
- 1:21:56Here's the two-one delivery to Singleton.
- 1:21:57Line drive center field is going to be a base hit.
- 1:21:59Bumrey is around third. Bumrey is headed home.
- 1:22:01And Bumrey is in with the go-ahead run, and Dower slides into third base, and he's out.
- 1:22:07That third base tag-down by Alfredo Griffin is going to be a beef.
- 1:22:11It looked like a fairly good call, but the Orioles score the go-ahead run.
- 1:22:15So at the end of four innings of play, the score is Baltimore five and Toronto four.
- 1:22:21Talking about a beef on that play, one of the television stations in Washington sent a camera crew up to Baltimore to do a feature story on umpires.
- 1:22:31And it so happened they had Bill Haller's umpiring crew mic.
- 1:22:34They had microphones, wireless microphones, on the umpires.
- 1:22:37And as luck would have it for that television crew, Earl Weaver was ejected for about the third or fourth time of the season.
- 1:22:44But there was probably about 32 bleeps in the two-and-a-half minutes of the discussion.
- 1:22:50But the interesting part of it is, and if you have ever umpired before and you've gotten into a serious dispute on a play, I think you will agree with me,
- 1:22:57usually what happens is a very small part of the entire discussion, which was involving a lot of shouting on Earl Weaver's part.
- 1:23:07But a lot of that discussion very little bit revolves around the actual play, which is a bock call made by the first base umpire Bill Haller.
- 1:23:14But I can tell you what was discussed.
- 1:23:16First of all, it was discussed that Weaver thought that Haller's crew was out to get the Orioles.
- 1:23:22Then I think the discussion went to whether or not Earl Weaver would make the Hall of Fame.
- 1:23:27They discussed whether or not Weaver had a winning record as a manager.
- 1:23:31Weaver pointed out that he didn't, that Haller didn't even know anything about baseball.
- 1:23:35Then I think it got back to the fact that Weaver thought Haller's crew was out to get him, and the fact that tomorrow night,
- 1:23:42now this is not this game, but it was the game played yesterday,
- 1:23:45that Haller would even have a better chance to get the Orioles because he'd be working the plate.
- 1:23:50Haller's took two and a half minutes or so and nothing after the first comment involved that bock call.
- 1:23:57So when they go out there, chances are they're not even talking about what the call was that started the dispute.
- 1:24:03But I'll tell you what, it was quite a show, and some poor tape editor probably spent half the afternoon cutting all the profanity out.
- 1:24:10But it was quite a show, I'll tell you.
- 1:24:13D'Amato Garcia lead off against Dennis Martinez as they go to the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:24:20And the first pitch is a called strike on a good-looking vendor from Dennis.
- 1:24:24One strike to count to D'Amato, who has singled and gone down on strikes tonight.
- 1:24:28That call at third base as we looked at it on the replay.
- 1:24:32It looks like a pretty good call from up here at first.
- 1:24:34I'll tell you, it was a very close call, and Weaver and Dar may have had a piece.
- 1:24:39Another vendor in there for a called strike, two strikes to count.
- 1:24:45But if it was a bad call, and you spend a lot of time talking about bad calls, that's a definite sign that you're not in first place leading the division.
- 1:24:52Two strikes to count to Garcia.
- 1:24:58How is the on-deck batter?
- 1:25:00First lead at five to four.
- 1:25:02A ground ball foul on the left side over into the Oriole dugout.
- 1:25:10Into the bottom of the third inning in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:25:12There's still no score on the game.
- 1:25:14And at Kansas City tonight, Willie Wilson has stolen his 29th consecutive base in the first inning.
- 1:25:20George Brett had to sacrifice five to drive in a run.
- 1:25:25George is only batting three ninety-eight.
- 1:25:31The fastball is fouled off to the right side.
- 1:25:33They say Reggie Jackson has been in kind of a bad mood lately.
- 1:25:37One of the things that has Reggie in a bad mood is that slowly dawning on Reggie, that despite the great gear that he's having,
- 1:25:44George Brett might wind up the most valuable player.
- 1:25:49Earl Weaver and Jim Frye conferred by phone yesterday.
- 1:25:53Earl from his office here at Memorial Stadium.
- 1:25:55Two strike pitch, ground ball off to George Blanger.
- 1:25:57George, he's up with it on the short hop, right with the phone on first base, and Garcia's off six-three.
- 1:26:03Earl called Jim Frye to congratulate him on winning the title of the American League West.
- 1:26:07The two had a very nice conversation.
- 1:26:09They remain very close friends.
- 1:26:11And finally, Jim Frye said, well, to tell you the truth, Earl, I've only been working with a couple of players this year.
- 1:26:17I've been spending most of my time giving instructions to Brett and Willie Wilson.
- 1:26:22And it cracked both men up.
- 1:26:25I'll tell you, those two would make a lot of guys that couldn't manage him.
- 1:26:28Here's the pitch to Howell.
- 1:26:29A fastball is a called strike.
- 1:26:34Let's knock on wood.
- 1:26:35Dennis appears to have it tonight.
- 1:26:36He didn't have it last Sunday in Toronto.
- 1:26:42Change-up is knocked foul off the first base line.
- 1:26:46Dennis came into the game for Jim Palmer in the fourth inning.
- 1:27:02Two-strike pitch, and it's high.
- 1:27:03One ball and two strikes to count.
- 1:27:13Martinez works again.
- 1:27:14There's a ground ball up the middle into center field for a base hit.
- 1:27:18Just out of the range of Mark Belanger charging over towards the bag from short.
- 1:27:30So Howell has the first hit off of Martinez.
- 1:27:32Single to center field, and here comes John Mayberry.
- 1:27:35Walks and scored a run on the first inning and pops up his sixth time out.
- 1:27:44Good power as John Mayberry.
- 1:27:46Here's the pitch to him, and it's a called strike.
- 1:27:49One strike to call, Mayberry.
- 1:27:53Twenty-six home runs this year, and he's hit 21 or more home runs in eight of the last nine seasons.
- 1:28:00Howell was the runner at first base.
- 1:28:02The Martinez pitch is a called strike, too.
- 1:28:05Looks like a good breaking pitch from Dennis.
- 1:28:07Mayberry kind of talking to himself as he's in the hole with one out, a runner at first base.
- 1:28:12Two strikes to count.
- 1:28:14The on-deck batter is Steve Brown.
- 1:28:18Five to four Orioles.
- 1:28:23Dennis will look into Dan Graham.
- 1:28:25He'll steer over to first base.
- 1:28:27Two-strike pitch is on the way, and it bounces in front of Graham out towards Dennis Martinez
- 1:28:31and the runner will hold him.
- 1:28:33Now, Steve Palambo wants to take a look at that baseball.
- 1:28:36He's going to take it out of the game, and Dennis will get a do-it.
- 1:28:38Some controversy among the Orioles about the baseballs they've been getting.
- 1:28:42One baseball, their maiden Haiti, has one dot, and another baseball has, I think, four or five dots.
- 1:28:48It seems like the ones with four or five dots fly out of the ballpark.
- 1:28:53The ones with one dot seem to stay in a bit more.
- 1:28:56Here's the one-two delivery to Mayberry, and it's a ball.
- 1:28:59Two balls and two strikes to count.
- 1:29:01The Orioles were in Toronto.
- 1:29:03The Blue Jays had nothing but those five-dot or four-dot baseballs, and they were flying out.
- 1:29:08It seems the Orioles seem to be getting most of the one-dot delivery to them here at Memorial Stadium.
- 1:29:16Here's a pitch to Mayberry.
- 1:29:18Swing and miss, and he goes down on the rank.
- 1:29:23A second strike-off for Dennis Martinez.
- 1:29:26The designated hitter, Steve Robb, is the best.
- 1:29:32Now the dot on the baseball indicates the plant or the particular machine that does the sowing.
- 1:29:38It's not all done by the same machine.
- 1:29:44A look to Berth.
- 1:29:45Here's a pitch to the designated hitter.
- 1:29:47Oh, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:29:49If the ball flies out of the park for one team, it's going to fly out of the park for the other team as well.
- 1:29:56One ball and no strikes to count to Brawn.
- 1:29:58How is it first thing?
- 1:30:00The Martinez fastball is a call strike.
- 1:30:02He burned one in.
- 1:30:04One ball and one strike to count.
- 1:30:06I wouldn't be surprised if the velocity on the fastball of Dennis Martinez is right up there near the 90s tonight.
- 1:30:12It might be the best of the year for Dennis.
- 1:30:19One-one pitch is on the way, and a change-up is low.
- 1:30:21Two balls and one strike to count.
- 1:30:23Two outs, the Orioles lead it five to four.
- 1:30:30The on-deck batter is Lloyd Mosby.
- 1:30:34Two on-pitch is ball three, three balls and one strike to count.
- 1:30:45While Brawn is only hitting 213 all the year, he's hit 316 in 30 games since joining the Blue Jays.
- 1:30:50Here's a pitch to Steve and his tie for a ball.
- 1:30:54So the tying run goes to second base, and the go-ahead run, the first base on the walk, given up by the McArthur team.
- 1:31:01The first is coming on for Brawn. Here comes Lloyd Mosby.
- 1:31:04Double in two runs in the first inning, and was out on a fly ball to center field his next time, up in the third inning.
- 1:31:11Mosby, our left-handed batter, and the Toronto Blue Jays people have high hopes for this young batter.
- 1:31:17I tell you, when you look at Lloyd, he just looks like a baseball player.
- 1:31:20Got a good feel. Swings a pretty good batter.
- 1:31:28And now, the grand is going to go out and have a few words with Dennis Martinez.
- 1:31:31There are two outs. Brawn is the runner at first base, and Powell is at second base.
- 1:31:35Five to four, the Birds lead it.
- 1:31:39They're into the third inning at Yankee Stadium, and there's no score on that game.
- 1:31:43A Yankee loss tonight, combined with an Oriole win, and the Birds can fold it within four.
- 1:31:49The Yankees keep trying to brick up the tunnel in the American League East, and the Orioles keep knocking holes in it,
- 1:31:54and they can see a little light down at the other end.
- 1:31:59The runners at first and second.
- 1:32:05Mosby awaits the pitch from Dennis Martinez.
- 1:32:08It's on the way, ground ball. A big chopper right back to Dennis.
- 1:32:11He feels it neatly in the photo first in time.
- 1:32:14Mosby and the Toronto Blue Jays are retired at the end of four and a half.
- 1:32:17The score is Baltimore 5, Toronto 4.
- 1:32:20The front running Montreal Expos in the National League's East Division.
- 1:32:27Winter's Tale was scratched from Saturday's $217,000 Woodward stakes because of, let's see, why exactly did they do it?
- 1:32:36Well, the scratches may be because the trainers of Dr. Patches and Tamper and Sill had to reevaluate their positions
- 1:32:43with the outside possibility that both Dr. Patches and Tamper and Sill will be scratched.
- 1:32:48The Spectacular Bid could go post-word at the anticipated 520 Eastern Daylight Time starting time Saturday.
- 1:32:54In that event, there would be no paramutual betting, and Spectacular Bid's owners would automatically pick up the winner's share.
- 1:33:01However, horsemen at Belmont Park believe that either Dr. Patches and Tamper and Sill or both will leave the starting gate with Spectacular Bid,
- 1:33:08and they feel that it's unlikely that both Jan Nehru, Dr. Patches' trainer, and Joe Kady, Tamper and Sill's conditioner, would permit that walkover.
- 1:33:17Well, if you're a George Steinbrenner agent, you better get on the phone to Tampa or New York or down to the Yacht or the Dock.
- 1:33:25Paul Mirabella has come into the game for the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 1:33:29Mirabella was announced as a starter against the Orioles in the first game in Toronto.
- 1:33:34Steinbrenner had the effuntery to call the American League president and complain that the Toronto Blue Jays weren't trying against the Orioles.
- 1:33:44And that set off a surge of reaction in Toronto. Everybody was upset. Mirabella worked alright.
- 1:33:51He went a day and two thirds, getting up six hits in four runs. He walked seven and struck out three.
- 1:33:57So Mirabella is in the game for Jackson Todd, and Eddie Murray is up. Chuck?
- 1:34:02Alright, Tom, thank you very much and good evening, everybody. Here is Murray.
- 1:34:06Lowenstein Crowley on the three-o to face the south ball, Mirabella, in the bottom of the fifth, Baltimore five at Toronto four.
- 1:34:14And the Fortsiders first offering to Murray, ground ball, sharp to hit third base side, off the glove of the diving third baseman, into foul territory.
- 1:34:21And Eddie Murray has reached with a hit off the glove of Roy Howell. He dozed toward the foul line, touched the ball to third territory, and tarred off the glove into foul territory.
- 1:34:32And he has reached for the base hit. And now rather than John Lowenstein, it's going to be Gary Renneke.
- 1:34:40Number 35. Renneke will bat for John Lowenstein. And Renneke's kind of fallen on tough times.
- 1:34:47He's had just three hits in his last 34 at bat, dating back to the 29th of August.
- 1:34:53And he would love nothing better than to break out of it, kind of get hot.
- 1:34:57Over the last two weeks of the year, the pitch is a little inside to Renneke. Ball one.
- 1:35:06On the year, Renneke is hitting 249. Murray with a pretty good lead at first. The pitch, the change, breaking ball, again, is low inside.
- 1:35:14The count now, two balls for belt strikes. Eddie Murray has reached on a base hit off the glove of third base and roll.
- 1:35:20Marabella four wins, 11 losses on the year. Renneke, big strapping right-handed swinger, stands right in on top of the plate as Marabella sets the draws.
- 1:35:33Here's the strike call by the guy doing that job, Steve Palermo.
- 1:35:37Denny Ayala is now in the on-deck circle to bat for designated hitter, Terry Crowley.
- 1:35:45Marabella ready to work. He checks the lead of Murray. His 2-1 pitch to Renneke. Ground ball foul off the third base side and it's two balls, two strikes.
- 1:35:56Blue Jays are here again tomorrow night at Memorial Stadium. Hope that you can be here.
- 1:36:017.30 is game time. And then they'll wind up Sunday afternoon. Now, tomorrow night, a very big night.
- 1:36:08Steve Stone will try for win number 24 once again. The 2-2 to Renneke. Marabella throws. Here's the foul out of play for the messages.
- 1:36:18Stone with an absolutely magnificent year of 23-7. He goes against Dave Steeve. Steeve is one of the very promising young right-handers on this Toronto staff.
- 1:36:31Sunday afternoon, Mike Flanagan and Jim Clancy another, then the pitch. Look out, it's hit Renneke in the middle of the back. A breaking ball driving in.
- 1:36:40On Renneke, he turned and darted out of the way, but was not quick enough to avoid the pitch. So down to second base goes Eddie Murray.
- 1:36:47Renneke is hit by the pitch. And to the plate now will come Denny Ayala. And here is Rex Barney's announcement.
- 1:36:55For the Orioles, that's number 25. Number 27 is Denny Ayala.
- 1:37:02Denny Ayala is hitting 282. And the first word from the Yankees in a little while is that the Yankees have scored a run at the bottom of the third.
- 1:37:11Yankees won. Lost to nothing at the end of three innings of play. And now let's watch Ayala.
- 1:37:20Oriole runners at first and second and nobody out. The set of the pitch to Ayala he darted and then held back. A ball is blown outside.
- 1:37:30Murray, the lead runner at second base. Renneke, the runner at first base. Both of those big guys are pretty darn good runners.
- 1:37:38Now the one-uping pitch. Mirabella checks the lead of Murray. Now throws. Here's a ball two high and outside.
- 1:37:47Repeating the Yankees won. Lost to nothing. They have completed three. Renko against Teahawks tonight.
- 1:37:54And the Red Sox are without their stellar star of so many years, Carl Jastremski, who has hung it up for the year.
- 1:38:03Now the two-nothing. Hold on a minute. Ayala requests time. And backs out of there.
- 1:38:07And I see now that Ernie Witt is talking to the plate up by our Steve Palermo about Ayala being out of the box.
- 1:38:17Drawing a line where Ayala can stand and then just scratch it out and move right in on top of it.
- 1:38:23Two faults and no strikes. Mirabella's pitch to Ayala. Hold on a minute. Time is called. The pitch will not count.
- 1:38:34Now Palermo I guess is going to go back and Witt is still complaining that Ayala is not in the box.
- 1:38:40And now Palermo is laying it on Witt right now. And Witt is giving it back to Palermo.
- 1:38:47Witt just apparently made a complaint that Ayala was not in the box.
- 1:38:51And Palermo lined the box out again and told Ayala to get in there. Here comes Maddux now, the manager of the Blue Jays,
- 1:38:57to try and protect his catcher Ernie Witt. And Palermo after outlining the box and okaying Ayala's position,
- 1:39:04apparently got another word or two from Ernie Witt and he said, now look, that's enough.
- 1:39:10And everything is okay and we're back to the action of the ballgame. The two-ball, no strikes, pitch to Ayala.
- 1:39:18Now we get second base running to get first. The Toronto left-hander draws. Swing and a miss. Strike one, two-all.
- 1:39:35Mirabella peers for the sign, flashed by Ernie Witt. And here is the two-one offering to the waiting Ayala.
- 1:39:43Swing and a miss. Hard break and stuff and I'll tell you something, Mirabella really turned that loose.
- 1:39:49Two balls, two strikes to Ayala. What a heck of a pitch to Mirabella just now.
- 1:39:56Howell at third. Shortstop and now Frito rips at the second base.
- 1:40:00And it's Demasto Garcia, the fourth, May Darien first around the Toronto infield. Two-two-pitch, Stucky,
- 1:40:06swing and a miss and Ayala goes down. Mirabella reached back as they would say and got whatever extra he needed to strike out
- 1:40:14Denny Ayala for the first out here in this fifth inning.
- 1:40:20And the new batter now was to have been Dan Graham, but rather than Dan Graham, manager Earl Weaver is coming with Rick Dempsey.
- 1:40:28Dempsey will bat for Dan Graham. Between Graham and Dempsey, what a job they have done for the Orioles this year.
- 1:40:39Dempsey brings with him a batting average of 264. He's in eight home runs and knocked in 38.
- 1:40:47Graham, of course, has his 12 home runs. That's a total of 20 home runs.
- 1:40:56And 85 runs batted in between Dempsey and Graham in 550 at bat.
- 1:41:06Now here is Dempsey.
- 1:41:08The Toronto left-hander, Mirabella is ready. He throws, drag, rips over the inside corner of the knees to the looking depth.
- 1:41:25Well, three pitch hitters, one right after the other. Renneke hit by the pitch, Ayala struck out and now Dempsey.
- 1:41:31And the one strike pitch to the waiting Rick, no, Mirabella just backs off the rubber and Murray checks back toward the bag.
- 1:41:38Five runs, nine hits to the Orioles, four runs, seven hits to the Blue Jays.
- 1:41:47And the pitch to Dempsey. He hits a little outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:41:51Even straight away down in the left field corner is Paul Hodgson, the center fielder Bobby Baylor. It's a fifth toward the alley in left center and pretty deep.
- 1:42:01And well off the line in right field toward the alley in right center is Lloyd Mosby.
- 1:42:08One out and the one-one pitch on the way to Dempsey.
- 1:42:11Here it is. Frank calls one ball, two strikes now to Dempsey and I'll tell you, Mirabella threw some pitches to Ayala that were just flat out looked unhittable.
- 1:42:21And the last pitch he threw to Dempsey was about as hard as I've seen anything thrown here tonight.
- 1:42:27He really turned it loose.
- 1:42:31Now the one-two offering.
- 1:42:33The set by Mirabella and the pitch to Dempsey. Outside for a ball, he kind of pulled the spring just a little. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:42:44The remarks made by Mr. Steinbrenner about Mirabella and the Toronto Blue Jays, you know, taking it easy on the Orioles was insulting to the Blue Jays ball club as a whole.
- 1:42:54And particularly galling to the young left-hander we're watching right now, Mirabella.
- 1:42:58Here goes the pitch's swing and a miss and Dempsey goes down and strikes an off-speed breaking ball. Back-to-back strikeout.
- 1:43:07It looked as though maybe Eddie Murray was on his way. He made a good ball start for the second base and then quickly breaks.
- 1:43:14So Mirabella, after giving up an infield hit to Eddie Murray and then hit Renegi with a pitch, has fanned pinch-hitter Ayala and also fanned pinch-hitter Dempsey.
- 1:43:24And now, Doug DeSensei. DeSensei, going into tonight's ball game, has hit 375 against Blue Jays pitching. And Doug tonight is one for two.
- 1:43:39Mirabella's pitch to DeSensei. Swing and a ground ball. Slowly hit down the first base line. The second base and gets to it.
- 1:43:44Quick throw to first. It's been time to get Dempsey, or rather DeSensei, and the inning is over.
- 1:43:49No runs on the base hit. Two men are left out and it's the end of five innings of play in Baltimore tonight. It's the Orioles 5, Toronto 4.
- 1:44:01The ON Australia rallied in the final leg to win the second America's Cup race against Freedom.
- 1:44:06The Australian victory means the best of seven series against the United States yard is now tied at one race apiece.
- 1:44:12The victory is the first for a Cup challenger in ten years. It came after Australia trailed Freedom by two to three phone lengths at the final mark.
- 1:44:20Australia led throughout much of the race, but the Dennis Connor led Freedom caught the Australian on the fourth leg and passed it after the decide rounding the fourth mark.
- 1:44:29And Illinois State Appellate Court ruled that the University of Illinois quarterback David Wilson is eligible to play in Saturday's game against Missouri.
- 1:44:38The ruling came some 20 hours before kickoff at Columbia, Missouri.
- 1:44:42It overturned Wednesday's ruling by an Illinois Circuit Court judge, which had left Wilson ineligible for the Big Ten football contest.
- 1:44:51Hey, for you people listening in the American Forces Network area, Germany, know that big bowling alley you got over there in Mannheim?
- 1:44:57Well, I guess there's a little bit of flap going on about that.
- 1:45:00I just have a story here that says the report by the U.S. Comptroller General criticized the Pentagon for building a two point four million dollar bowling alley in West Germany.
- 1:45:09Apparently that bowling alley is larger than authorized, but not to worry.
- 1:45:14One of the spokesmen over there says that the grant came from profits from post exchanges and other installations.
- 1:45:21He says, hey, that thing is being used 24 hours a day.
- 1:45:24He says we have enough as we can handle over there.
- 1:45:27Enjoy that bowling alley on the scoreboard.
- 1:45:31There's a word from Kansas City.
- 1:45:32George Brett has sacrificed flying his first time at bat.
- 1:45:35Whether Wilson is twenty ninth consecutive stolen base that has left an American League stolen base record.
- 1:45:43Here are the Blue Jays, the top of the sixth inning Bob Baylor leads off.
- 1:45:47He's one for two and swing the foul into the upper deck and out of play strike one.
- 1:45:51Now the pinch hitting of Dempsey keeps him in the ballgame.
- 1:45:54The catcher likewise Renneke saves the game.
- 1:45:57Now the left fielder Renneke and left Dempsey now catching.
- 1:46:00Couple of changes made by skipper Earl Weaver on the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:46:04Dennis Martinez in relief of Jim Palmer.
- 1:46:07The one strike pitch to Baylor, a good looking breaking ball just a little outside on the count of the ball and the strike.
- 1:46:13Baylor Natalie has a hit tonight, but a stolen base and a run score.
- 1:46:20Now the one to one offering, a strike to call great looking breaking ball again from Dennis Martinez.
- 1:46:31Baylor hits out of a very pronounced open stand, but he does kind of strive right towards the mound.
- 1:46:37And the one to pitch to Baylor, pops him up right in the middle of the infield coming down the line.
- 1:46:41Dowell and LeShore everybody, all four infielders, now they give way to Ballanger.
- 1:46:45And he had an ice cream cone that almost got away from him.
- 1:46:49Everybody with the exception of pitcher Martinez charged into the pop up and Ballanger made the catch right behind the mound.
- 1:46:56The Red Sox won, the Yankees won in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:47:01Now here is Paul Hodgson, this young man started as an infielder a lot of times.
- 1:47:09He also had to undergo shoulder surgery and he is a native of Canada.
- 1:47:14He's waiting in a bit for the breaking ball from Dennis Martinez.
- 1:47:21The ball was born in Montreal in Quebec.
- 1:47:26Now the one strike pitch, here's a fly ball well hit deep left field.
- 1:47:29Renneke going back right at the wall, leads the score.
- 1:47:33Home run Hodgson and the Blue Jays decide the ball game.
- 1:47:38And I think this will be his first major league home run.
- 1:47:46That's exactly right and it will tie the game Hodgson with his first major league home run.
- 1:47:59Five-five Toronto on the Orioles at the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:48:03Now it's been that way since the very first inning when Toronto scored three against starter Jim Palmer.
- 1:48:09The Orioles came back with one in the bottom of the first inning and then tied it with two in the bottom of the third.
- 1:48:15Now the pitch is a little bit high for the left-handed batter, Ernie Wythe.
- 1:48:24Toronto took a four-three lead in the top of the fourth inning only to have the Orioles take a five-four lead in the bottom of that fourth inning.
- 1:48:30Now it's tied up again.
- 1:48:33Five-five, swinging a fly ball toward the gap right center.
- 1:48:36Bumbree is there, coasting over now with center fielder next to Tass for the second out of the inning.
- 1:48:41Two down.
- 1:48:44And here comes Alfredo Griffin, the switch hitter.
- 1:48:47And he is all for three tonight.
- 1:48:50Fly to center, reached out of field of choice, struck out.
- 1:48:56The Yankees are also tied. They're 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning in New York.
- 1:49:01Here in Baltimore it's 5-5.
- 1:49:07Now the Martinez pitch to Alfredo.
- 1:49:10A little low on outside, ball one.
- 1:49:19Dennis is ready to go again, the rocking motion by the Oriole right hander, the fast ball is in high in the air out of the shallow left.
- 1:49:26Back to shortstop on the left fielder.
- 1:49:28And it is the left fielder, Renneke, making the catch of the last moment for the final out.
- 1:49:32At the end of five and a half, Toronto five, Baltimore five.
- 1:49:38In the National League, New York and Pittsburgh are now through five innings of play.
- 1:49:41Pittsburgh has just scored two in the bottom of the fifth to take a four-three lead.
- 1:49:47The Orioles are now in the bottom of the third inning in Kansas City.
- 1:49:50The Orioles leading it by the score of one to nothing.
- 1:49:53California and Texas are through two at Texas.
- 1:49:56And the Angels lead one to nothing.
- 1:49:58Seattle and Milwaukee, bottom of the third.
- 1:50:00At the county stadium there's no score.
- 1:50:05In the National League, Montreal and St. Louis are in the bottom of the third at St. Louis.
- 1:50:10And Montreal leading that game by the score of one to nothing.
- 1:50:15Also in the American League, Cleveland is leading Detroit by the score of three to nothing.
- 1:50:19The Tigers are now hitting in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:50:22Cleveland coming up with three in the top of the fourth.
- 1:50:25And as you may have heard, Boston and New York are tied at one-one in their ball game.
- 1:50:36A federal judge has sent the contract to the student of Hartford,
- 1:50:39where the forward Blaine Stouten, the National Hockey League president,
- 1:50:42has sent John Ziegler for arbitration.
- 1:50:45Stouten has shared the National Hockey League's goal scoring title
- 1:50:48with Los Angeles' Charlie Zimmer last season,
- 1:50:50at side of ruling that he was a free agent and $600,000 in damages from the Wailers,
- 1:50:55who he claims failed to offer him a contract by the July 1st League deadline.
- 1:51:00U.S. history judge Jose Carbanes refused to rule on the merits of the case,
- 1:51:05saying that under the league's collective bargaining agreement,
- 1:51:08the dispute had to be arbitrated by Ziegler.
- 1:51:11Blaine Stouten from playing with any other professional hockey team
- 1:51:14before that arbitration is resolved.
- 1:51:18Well, as we go to the bottom of the sixth inning, it's all tied up at five-five.
- 1:51:23Mark Belanger's going to lead it off.
- 1:51:25He'll be followed by Bumpery and Dower, and we'll go back to Chuck.
- 1:51:28Well, Belanger tonight is 0-4-1.
- 1:51:31He has walked and hit into a fourth play, but he has scored two runs.
- 1:51:34The pitch is low for Ball to Belanger.
- 1:51:37He also has stolen the base, which was directly responsible for the fourth run.
- 1:51:44Now Mirabella into the booth.
- 1:51:46The left-hander's one-numbing pitch for Belanger hit high in the air in the center field,
- 1:51:49moving over to his right and coming on.
- 1:51:51It's Zahler, the center fielder, makes the catch,
- 1:51:53and that will be the first down of the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:51:57Now the batter will be Al Bumpery.
- 1:51:59Bumpery tonight is on a two for two-nine,
- 1:52:01and he has scored three of the Oriole five runs that knocked him two up.
- 1:52:09Bumpery hit his ninth home run tonight.
- 1:52:11Stan Stewart is beginning to limber a little bit in the Oriole bullpen.
- 1:52:15What a great relief.
- 1:52:16John Stewart gave the Orioles here the other night.
- 1:52:23Bumpery in the first inning, single, and stole his 41st base of the year.
- 1:52:28It was knocked in a couple of moments later by Kenny Singleton.
- 1:52:31Bumpery in the third inning hit a two-run home run.
- 1:52:34Here's the ball to the bowing side of Bumpery.
- 1:52:38Left-hander, left-hander, and Mirabella throwing very hard.
- 1:52:46And the one-numbing pitch, Mirabella to Bumpery.
- 1:52:49Ground ball sharply hits to the glove side of the first base,
- 1:52:51but they there are there, throws for the bit to covering,
- 1:52:53Bumpery slides, but he is out of first base.
- 1:52:56Bumpery goes into his slide, kicks the bag.
- 1:52:59He felt he beat the pitcher, Mirabella, covering at first base.
- 1:53:03It was one of those, as the umpire would say, a bing binger.
- 1:53:06And apparently Mirabella got there with the first thing.
- 1:53:11Dayberry made a fine play going to the glove side
- 1:53:14and then threw to the pitcher covering.
- 1:53:16I'll tell you, it was awfully close to first base for the umpire
- 1:53:19Clark right on the scene.
- 1:53:22The rules at Bumpery is the second out of the inning.
- 1:53:26Fine play from Dayberry and good coverage from the part of Mirabella.
- 1:53:29Here now is Rich Dowell.
- 1:53:31Dowell right in the middle of the Orioles, two-run fourth inning
- 1:53:34with a base that's not going to run.
- 1:53:36Strike at the knee to Rich Dowell.
- 1:53:41Dowell has one kind of a hitter with the base is empty
- 1:53:44and a different kind of a hitter with people on.
- 1:53:47He has hit well above 350 now with that in scoring position.
- 1:53:51The swing, now to Powell Ball.
- 1:53:54Out of play, two strikes down to Dowell.
- 1:53:59Well, the Yankees failed to score at the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:54:01It's Boston one, the Yankees one.
- 1:54:03And now they're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:54:07Red Sox will be here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of next week.
- 1:54:12Two-strike pitch on the way to Dowell.
- 1:54:14A little bit outside low.
- 1:54:17One and two.
- 1:54:20Dowell has struck out an average of only one
- 1:54:22in every 34 trips to the front.
- 1:54:26Now the one-two pitch.
- 1:54:28Breaking ball hit into left field.
- 1:54:30It's going to drop for a base pitch.
- 1:54:32Dowell just reached out and banged the curve ball into left field
- 1:54:35for his second hit of the evening.
- 1:54:38And the Orioles cancel the ball game.
- 1:54:42Here now is Ken Singleton.
- 1:54:45Now Singleton went two for three
- 1:54:47against starter Jackson Powell tonight.
- 1:54:50And is facing the left-hander Mirabella for the first time.
- 1:54:54Singleton, of course, will then be a right-handed batter.
- 1:54:57I guess we should mention it more often when they are switch hitters,
- 1:55:00but Singleton is a right-hander.
- 1:55:02Hits 288.
- 1:55:04And as a left-hander, he hits 288.
- 1:55:08Now the pitch to Singleton is outside for a ball.
- 1:55:12A big difference, of course, it holds on.
- 1:55:14Fifteen if it hit as a left-handed batter.
- 1:55:16Seven as a right-handed batter.
- 1:55:20Dowell with the lead at the first base, two down.
- 1:55:22And Mirabella's pitch to Singleton.
- 1:55:24It changes and is too high.
- 1:55:26Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:55:27Ernie Wichters, wait a minute.
- 1:55:28Let's go out and talk this over.
- 1:55:30He did not like the last pitch.
- 1:55:32Watch Mirabella to kind of put that one away.
- 1:55:37Ken Singleton facing Mirabella
- 1:55:40in the bottom of the sixth inning of the 5-5-5.
- 1:55:44It's the opening game of a very important three-game series.
- 1:55:47Well, everything the Orioles play from here on out will be very important.
- 1:55:51Skye calls Singleton over the inside corner of the deep.
- 1:56:00Singleton went into a slump, a very brief one, two for 21.
- 1:56:03He certainly has shaken that up last couple of nights with pitch.
- 1:56:06Here's a high foul out of play for the upper deck.
- 1:56:13In the last two ball games, he has had five hits and nine at bat.
- 1:56:17So now it is seven hits in his last 12 at bat.
- 1:56:25That's the way you shake a slump.
- 1:56:29Two for 21 and turn around and go seven for 12.
- 1:56:33Mirabella's ready.
- 1:56:34The 2-2 offering to Singleton.
- 1:56:36Here's a swing and a miss and he's struck him out.
- 1:56:38The inning is over.
- 1:56:39At the end of five, sixth inning to play,
- 1:56:41the score Baltimore 5-Toronto 5.
- 1:56:45What really happened at that missile silo?
- 1:56:47I'm Keith Berman.
- 1:56:48About 1,000 residents evacuated from the area at Damascus, Arkansas,
- 1:56:53are now returning home, leaking fuel from a Titan II missile exploded
- 1:56:56in its underground silo overnight, injuring 22 Air Force personnel.
- 1:57:00ABC News has learned that when the explosion occurred,
- 1:57:03the nuclear warhead on top was catapulted out of the silo onto the ground nearby.
- 1:57:07Then it was determined that no radiation had escaped.
- 1:57:10The strategic air command will neither confirm nor deny this ABC News report.
- 1:57:14The U.S. hostage crisis in Iran is winding up to a 200 rather than a 321.
- 1:57:19Ford Motors recalling about a quarter million Ford and Mercury cars built in 1974
- 1:57:24is to replace possibly defective engine cooling fan blades.
- 1:57:28Effective on Monday, an FHA or VA insured home mortgage loan will cost you 13%,
- 1:57:33up one full point.
- 1:57:34A judge has refused to allow the body in the grave of Lee Harvey Oswald
- 1:57:38to be dug up from a positive identification.
- 1:57:40Keith Berman, ABC Contemporary News.
- 1:57:43Checking the upcoming schedule on the parade of sport for events.
- 1:57:49A lot of football coming up on Saturday stateside.
- 1:57:53That'll be 0030 UTC Sunday.
- 1:57:57College football, 10 states, will be at Texas A&M.
- 1:58:01Then the pro football doubleheader on Sunday.
- 1:58:05And that'll be the St. Louis Cardinals at the Detroit Lions,
- 1:58:08followed by the New England Patriots at the Seattle Seahawks.
- 1:58:11And then the Monday game stateside, the New York Giants at the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:58:18Well, we're going now to the seventh inning.
- 1:58:20It'll be D'Amato Garcia against Denny Martinez.
- 1:58:23And the right-handed first offering is low and outside of the right-hand-swing D'Amato,
- 1:58:28who's single to the first and struck out at the second.
- 1:58:32And then he's out in the ground ball, the short of the fifth inning.
- 1:58:36The 1-0 for Martinez.
- 1:58:37Ground ball hits slowly toward the shortstop.
- 1:58:39Belanger there to pick up on the throw, and he is out at first base.
- 1:58:44Belanger had to kind of lean on that throw.
- 1:58:47The ball not hit that sharply, and D'Amato went down the line.
- 1:58:50He's putting it to seed.
- 1:58:51Here now is the Carrot Top.
- 1:58:53The redhead, Roy Howell, who is 1 for 3 tonight.
- 1:58:58He's said that against the league, it's at a 2.57, but believe me, he really has had probably
- 1:59:03as many productive gains against Oriole pitching as he has anyone else in the league.
- 1:59:09Cleveland and Detroit, a 3-3 tie.
- 1:59:11They have completed four innings.
- 1:59:13Milwaukee, 3-0 over Seattle.
- 1:59:15They're on the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:59:16Pitch to Howell to strike.
- 1:59:17Letter high on the outside portion.
- 1:59:20California's Angels lead the Rangers, 3-0 on the bottom of the third.
- 1:59:24Kansas City, 1-0 over Oakland.
- 1:59:25They're on the bottom of the third.
- 1:59:27Minnesota, 2-0 over the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:59:29They're playing at a foul ball right behind the plate.
- 1:59:32Two strikes.
- 1:59:34Speaking of Minnesota, how about a young man named Gary Ward of the Minnesota Twins,
- 1:59:39who's the first man in the 27-year history of the Milwaukee County Stadium to ever hit for the cycle.
- 1:59:47Pitch, swing the foul, going to be out of play.
- 1:59:50No one has ever hit for the cycle at Milwaukee County Stadium in this 27-year history until this young man,
- 1:59:56Gary Ward, did it for the Twins in the first game of the doubleheader.
- 2:00:01Last night.
- 2:00:03And the two-strike pitch.
- 2:00:05Fly ball, well hit, deep in center field.
- 2:00:07Bumbray trying to catch up with it on the warning track.
- 2:00:09Leaps, he's got it.
- 2:00:11Bumbray did get there.
- 2:00:12Made the leap, caught the ball, hit the wall, and held on.
- 2:00:17Those kind of catches are almost commonplace for Al Bumbray in 1980.
- 2:00:27This ball was really hit.
- 2:00:30Howell unloaded on it, and Bumbray with his great speed was able to run it down with a leap.
- 2:00:36Lost the ball, hit the fence, and still held on.
- 2:00:40Two down now in the Toronto 7th, but the batter is John Mayberry.
- 2:00:44Archie that throws a high pop off the third base side.
- 2:00:47DeSensei, the third baseman on the skin of the infield, makes the grab.
- 2:00:50The inning is over.
- 2:00:51At the end of 6 1⁄2, it is Toronto 5 and Baltimore 5.
- 2:00:57Charter boat ticket sold for the second race in the America's Cup Series turned out to be a bargain for spectators
- 2:01:03and kind of a headache for the boat owners.
- 2:01:05The 35 to 50 dollar stubs gave their owners a seat for the race Thursday and again Friday.
- 2:01:11When the second head-to-head contest was rescheduled by the New York Yacht Club,
- 2:01:15Thursday's race was abandoned because the foreign challenger Australia and the U.S. Defender Freedom
- 2:01:21failed to finish the 24 and 3⁄10 mile course within the time limit set on the race, 5 hours and 15 minutes.
- 2:01:27Cup tickets are sold by the race rather than the date, and excursion boats licensed by the State Public Utilities Commission
- 2:01:34must give their owners a free ride until the race is completed.
- 2:01:38The general manager of Viking Tours said that's just a gamble you take with this type of racing.
- 2:01:43The race cancellation took 10,000 dollars out of Viking's pocket.
- 2:01:47It sold approximately 400 tickets Thursday at 35 each and about 70% cashed in the rain checks.
- 2:01:53And another look at the race Friday.
- 2:01:57David Erickson refunded half the 50 dollar fare to about 25 passengers who booked a seat on the Schooner Young America Thursday,
- 2:02:04but couldn't make it for the repeat performance.
- 2:02:06The 130 foot tall ship licensed for charter to the public said Erickson,
- 2:02:11who brought the square rigger from Atlantic City, New Jersey, in hopes of making money for the ship's sailing training program.
- 2:02:17It's a non-profit tax event sailing vessel owned by Historic Gardeners Base and Maritime Museum,
- 2:02:23cost about a thousand dollars to take that ship out for one day.
- 2:02:27Well let's quickly run down the National League scoreboard for you.
- 2:02:30The Cubs over the Phillies 4-3 at the end of 6th Pittsburgh leading the match 4-3.
- 2:02:36Montreal and St. Louis 1-1 at the end of 4.
- 2:02:39Later in Latter-day San Diego, Cincinnati and Los Angeles, Houston and San Francisco in the American League in the bottom of the 5th inning.
- 2:02:46The Yankees and the Red Sox are all tied up at 1-1.
- 2:02:50Chuck, LR55 tie head-to-hub of the bottom of the 7th with Eddie Murray.
- 2:02:54And he started to go and held back on the swing of all low and inside with.
- 2:02:58Now Eddie is the right-hander, gets 297 with 9 home runs.
- 2:03:03The left-hander gets 301 with 20 home runs.
- 2:03:07And he's the right-hander now against Toronto's Paul Marivella, the 1-0 to Murray.
- 2:03:13Outside, 2-0 now to Ed.
- 2:03:16What a great year, and this young man is just going to have good year after good year.
- 2:03:21He's got a great attitude, wonderful instinct for the game.
- 2:03:25And as they would say, he's got his head screwed on right here.
- 2:03:30Here's the 2-0 pitch way outside, kind of all three.
- 2:03:34Eddie is one of those fellows that if you didn't know him, you'd say he's kind of flakmatic.
- 2:03:38He doesn't show a lot of emotion, but he's just a very solid individual.
- 2:03:42He never gets too high, never gets too low.
- 2:03:44And once you get to know him a little bit, you recognize the fact that he's got a pretty good sense of humor too.
- 2:03:49Now the 3-0, Marivella to Ed Murray. He takes and a strike is called.
- 2:03:55Now we'll look to Cal Ripken down the third-base side, see whether or not he'll be taken again.
- 2:04:02Now if you're managing, sitting in this girl, we repeat the dugout.
- 2:04:06Would you have Murray taken or hitting on the 3-1?
- 2:04:09Let's just say he's hitting. Let's see whether or not he does.
- 2:04:12Marivella's 3-1 set. He takes ball four, one outside.
- 2:04:17So Marivella has given up a walk to Ed Murray to start the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:04:22And for the Toronto South ball, that's his first three tickets.
- 2:04:26Here now is Gary Renneke, the first appearance that Gary made against Marivella.
- 2:04:33He was hit by the fifth. It's apparently didn't do any damage.
- 2:04:37They have completed five innings now at Yankee Stadium. It is still Boston 1 and the Yankees 1.
- 2:04:43Marivella to Renneke. Swing and a fly ball well hit. Centerfield back and waiting.
- 2:04:48Baylor is there, makes the grab. And that will be the first count.
- 2:04:52One away as Renneke hits the ball right on the button, but right at center fielder.
- 2:04:57Here now is Denny Ayala in his first plate appearance against Marivella. He's struck out.
- 2:05:04Ayala is the Orioles' designated hitter. Tonight it started with Steve Stone in this spot.
- 2:05:10And naturally before Stone could bat at the second inning, Terry Fowley was announced as the new designated hitter.
- 2:05:17Fowley went over to Ayala. Here's the ball game in the fifth inning.
- 2:05:22Fowley with a good lead at first. Millar-Ballard stares that way. Comes to the plate. Here's the foul right up to three.
- 2:05:27Now the play. Strike one.
- 2:05:30The Orioles fighting desperately to keep their head above water and to close the gap.
- 2:05:43That five game gap between themselves and the Yankees.
- 2:05:47Now the one strike pitch for the waiting Ayala.
- 2:05:50Swing and a ground ball foul off the third base side. Now two strikes. A hard swinging muscular Denny Ayala. He's not as strong as you get to be in this game.
- 2:06:09One out in the beginning. Runner at first base, Ed Murray. We're in a 5-5 tie here at the bottom of the seventh in Baltimore tonight.
- 2:06:16The starters are gone. Jackson Todd started for Toronto. He's gone. Mirabella's in there. Two strikes pitch to Ben Ayala.
- 2:06:22The left hander throws way outside. A ball and two strikes. Palmer started and Denny Martinez is taking over for him.
- 2:06:30Well, 12,706 paid tonight at Memorial Stadium. And the one-two pitch.
- 2:06:38Here's a line foul to the deep left field corner. Barlow and Mike Willis are up and throwing out of the Toronto bullpen.
- 2:06:55A ball and two strikes to Ayala.
- 2:06:58We've seen Denny hit some shots about as hard as anybody in the league this year. The set by Mirabella and the one-two pitch to Ayala.
- 2:07:08Here's a line drive and it's caught by the leaping second baseman. And Murray alertly got back to first base.
- 2:07:15Ayala hit another line drive. It looked as though Mirabella almost got a glove on it. A piece of it.
- 2:07:21And the second baseman, Garcia, was soaring into the air and grabbed it for the second down. He hit it two down down.
- 2:07:28And Rick Dempsey, like Ayala before him, he also stuck out against Mirabella in the fifth.
- 2:07:40The set for Toronto left hander throws. Missing low and inside and a ball one. Mirabella looks toward the plate up by Palermo.
- 2:07:46And it's caught the vase.
- 2:07:53Well, the Blue Jays managed a victory in three games against the Yankees.
- 2:07:58Came awfully close to two out of three, too. The pitch gets high for a ball.
- 2:08:04This goes to show, as people have said for so many years, that this game of baseball is very unique.
- 2:08:12And some of the strangest things can happen. Like Toronto leading seven to three, going to the bottom of the tenth inning.
- 2:08:18It's an extended game, you thought, well, boy, if they ever had a chance to win one, that was it.
- 2:08:22There goes the runner, Murray, a swing and a fouling pop-up, third base side. Roy Powell, the third baseman, coming down the line.
- 2:08:28And fouls round. He's got it and the inning is over. At the end of seven, Toronto five, Baltimore five.
- 2:08:34At Kansas City, the Royals have just scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning against the Oakland A's.
- 2:08:40And after three full innings of play, Kansas City six, Oakland nothing. Kingman started for the A's.
- 2:08:46Beard now pitching. Slithorpe continues to pitch for Kansas City.
- 2:08:50George Brett hit a sacrifice line his first time at bat. So, of course, he's not charged at the time of bat.
- 2:08:56His second trip in the third, bingo, base hit. He's now one for one and is hitting 400.
- 2:09:03So, George Brett, after coming back from that hand injury, doing quite a job. He is now batting 400.
- 2:09:09Kansas City leading in that game six to three.
- 2:09:12Willie Wilson established in the American League a consecutive fill-in base record on Thursday with his 28.
- 2:09:18He just grabbed number 29 earlier in that ball game.
- 2:09:23The Milwaukee Brewers say third baseman Don Money will miss the final two weeks of the season.
- 2:09:28Money's suffering a knee injury earlier in the week in a game against Seattle.
- 2:09:32The Brewers say that Money will undergo knee surgery October 3rd in Milwaukee.
- 2:09:36Money hit 256 this season with 17 homers.
- 2:09:40National Hockey League president John Ziegler announced Friday the Philadelphia Flyers have been fined $5,000
- 2:09:46for criticizing the officiating during the 1979 Stanley Cup playoffs against the Islanders.
- 2:09:52Ziegler said the fine was levied after an investigation into comments made by Flyers owner Ed Snyder
- 2:09:58about Chief Referee Scottie Morrison during the last game of the Stanley Cup Finals, May 24th.
- 2:10:03The Islanders won that with a 5-4 victory over the Flyers.
- 2:10:07Well, whenever baseball fans begin to talk a little bit about the most valuable player in the American League,
- 2:10:13you know the names of Gossips jump up, the names of Reggie Jackson also is in there.
- 2:10:18And I guess this fellow's name will be mentioned a little bit too.
- 2:10:21George Bratz Singleton, the third innings, won for one.
- 2:10:24His batting average at the moment is an even 400.
- 2:10:29Here is Steve Braun, left-hand swinging designated hitter for Toronto.
- 2:10:34And the dentist, Martinez, pitched to Braun.
- 2:10:37Fastball ripped over the outside corner of the letters, strike one.
- 2:10:42Braun single to not get the first Toronto run of the ball game in the first inning.
- 2:10:45Struck out in the third, drew a walk, the next time up in the fifth.
- 2:10:48Here's the ball, high and outside.
- 2:10:51A little bit for Royals, Blue Jays, and was purchased from Syracuse Club earlier this year by Toronto.
- 2:11:00Fly fly ball hit to left field, waiting for it out there is Gary Raneke in the club, and that'll be the first out.
- 2:11:09One away on the top of the eighth inning, the batter now, Lloyd Mosby.
- 2:11:14Now Lloyd doubled down the right field side to knock in a couple of runs in the Toronto three runs first inning.
- 2:11:20Since that time, he has slide to center and bounced to the mound.
- 2:11:25This young man is an outstanding prospect.
- 2:11:30Even so, he's got a chance to become quite a player, the dentist, Martinez, curves a little high, ball one.
- 2:11:38Tom Marvich, a little while ago, he looks like a player.
- 2:11:43One other pitch on the way, Dennis works, breaking ball hit about two feet in front of the plate.
- 2:11:48Countdown to two balls, no strikes.
- 2:11:53But successful players come in all sizes, don't they? In all shapes.
- 2:11:58Some are tall and slender, short and stocky.
- 2:12:05It's still one-one, the Yankees, the Red Sox, Yankees are batting on the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:12:10Pitch is down low, three balls, no strikes.
- 2:12:13When Dennis worked against Toronto last Sunday, this is what gave him trouble, control.
- 2:12:18And he walked three in that effort.
- 2:12:22It's still one-one, the Yankees, the Red Sox, Yankees are batting on the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:12:26Pitch is down low, three balls, no strikes.
- 2:12:30When Dennis worked against Toronto last Sunday, this is what gave him trouble, control.
- 2:12:35And he walked three in that effort.
- 2:12:37So far tonight, he's only given up one walk, pitch outside and a ball four.
- 2:12:42So Mosley is the tie-breaking run now as he goes to first base with one out.
- 2:12:48After the plate comes the right-handed batter, Bobby Baylor.
- 2:12:51Baylor has bounced a short, singles, scored a run, and bounced a short again.
- 2:12:56Let's take a look at the schedule of the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 2:13:13They'll be going back home.
- 2:13:15Here's a pitch a little bit high to Bobby Baylor, ball one.
- 2:13:19I don't know which ball club does the best job when they visit Baltimore on steam crafts,
- 2:13:23but I'll tell you something, the Toronto Blue Jays have got to be given some serious consideration.
- 2:13:29They really do a job on our Maryland steam crafts.
- 2:13:38Now the one-hunting pitch to the waiting Baylor.
- 2:13:40Noah throws the first, back safely goes Mosley.
- 2:13:43Big, tall, rangy young man as Mosley.
- 2:13:45Got pretty good speed.
- 2:13:51He's ready to go.
- 2:13:53Look over the shoulder to check Mosley, the set and the pitch.
- 2:13:55Baylor hits a foul ball, a line foul against the rolled up tarp down at the first base side.
- 2:14:00One ball, one strike to them.
- 2:14:02Bobby Baylor, I guarantee you, I think that when Baylor goes back to Toronto next week or Sunday night,
- 2:14:08there are going to be a couple of cases of steam crafts aboard that airplane taking him home.
- 2:14:16One ball, one strike to Baylor.
- 2:14:20Noah throws the first, back safely goes Mosley.
- 2:14:27The Orioles, five runs and ten hits.
- 2:14:29Toronto, five runs on eight.
- 2:14:31They have a tie run, the first major league home run in the career of Paul Hodgson.
- 2:14:35Quicker throw to first base by Dennis.
- 2:14:37Back safely again is Mosley.
- 2:14:41Although in this situation it's quite obvious that Dennis, the Orioles,
- 2:14:44think that Baylor and Mosley could have nothing going.
- 2:14:49The set by Dennis and the one-one pitch.
- 2:14:52Here's a looping line drive caught by the second baseman, Dower.
- 2:14:55No chance of doubling the runner at first base, Lloyd Mosley.
- 2:14:59Baylor's gone on a soft line drive to Dower for the second out of the inning.
- 2:15:03And now here is the aforementioned Paul Hodgson.
- 2:15:07It is first major league home run with nobody aboard in the sixth inning to tie the ball game.
- 2:15:12I mentioned he was from Montreal.
- 2:15:17Signed a pro contract on his 17th birthday in 77.
- 2:15:22He had an off-season shoulder operation.
- 2:15:27And then started his professional career at third base and then switched to the outfield.
- 2:15:37He started with Eulica hitting four, 74, and seven games.
- 2:15:41Then hurt that shoulder sliding into a base.
- 2:15:43Here's a check swing foul right behind the plate.
- 2:15:47And the count will be strike one, this is Hodgson.
- 2:15:541978 of the Pioneer League, Paul played for Medicine Hat and he hit 279.
- 2:16:06Paul Rangety, right-handed swinger.
- 2:16:14Tomorrow night, 730 game time.
- 2:16:16Tomorrow night, Steve Snow will be after win number 24.
- 2:16:21As an Oriole, and we hope that a lot of you can be here to root him on.
- 2:16:26To Martinez, one strike pitch for Hodgson.
- 2:16:28Here's the foul ball right up the screen and out of play.
- 2:16:31Two strikes now to Paul.
- 2:16:36Paul is having an excellent game tonight to go with his first major league home run.
- 2:16:40He had a single.
- 2:16:41Yes, a second inning.
- 2:16:48Moe's D with a pretty good lead at first base, two out.
- 2:16:51And the two strike pitch, well, it looked like Dempsey wanted a pitch out.
- 2:16:55Dennis really didn't get the ball out there far enough, the one that he harmed.
- 2:17:00He did get it out of the strike zone.
- 2:17:02Hodgson couldn't do anything with it.
- 2:17:04And Mosby at first base had no intention of doing anything.
- 2:17:13Now the one-two offering to the right-hand swinging, Paul Hodgson.
- 2:17:18Dennis is taking a long time, now ready to go.
- 2:17:22He kicks and throws just outside, two balls and two strikes.
- 2:17:36Now it's been a seed-saw kind of a battle tonight at Memorial Stadium.
- 2:17:39Right now it's a 5-5 tie.
- 2:17:42Dennis is ready, the two-two to Hodgson, Brown foul right at the plate, so it counts a hole.
- 2:18:08Time right now, here comes Skipper Earl Weaver on the dead run out of the Oriole dugout.
- 2:18:14He wants Dempsey to join him on the mound, and he'll talk a little bit with Dennis.
- 2:18:18If there is any activity in the Oriole bullpen.
- 2:18:20So this is just a little skull session on the mound right now between Manager Weaver and Dennis and catcher Rick Dempsey.
- 2:18:31That's one of the things about Skipper Earl Weaver that I guess we haven't talked a heck of a lot about.
- 2:18:37Don't misunderstand, he does not interfere with his pitching coach.
- 2:18:40He believes his pitching coach has got a job to do and understands it well enough to get it done without any help.
- 2:18:45But Earl does kind of stay pretty close and in very close contact with his pitcher.
- 2:18:51Now the two-two.
- 2:18:52Here's a swing and a ground ball up the third base line.
- 2:18:54Shortstop and Andrew has the throw to first base.
- 2:18:56It is in time to get Hodgson for the final out of the inning at the end of seven and a half, Oriole five, Blue Jays five.
- 2:19:06In college football, one game of note being played on Friday night.
- 2:19:10That's Albany State of Georgia and Florida A&M.
- 2:19:13Florida A&M having the better of it late in the third quarter.
- 2:19:16It's Florida A&M 32, Albany State two.
- 2:19:22Outside linebacker Bo Harris, who only thirsted, announced his retirement from professional football, was back in the Cincinnati Bengals camp.
- 2:19:29According to Harris, it was a personal matter.
- 2:19:32Let's just say he found a way to solve it without retirement.
- 2:19:35He said, I went in thinking I was going to retire, which I did indeed announce.
- 2:19:39But he said, for us to Greg, that's the Bengals head coach, is very understanding.
- 2:19:43And he says, I've been there before, so no problem.
- 2:19:46Let's get on with it.
- 2:19:49Drivers from all over the country are converging on Pocono International Raceway in preparation for the 30th running of the CAM2 Race of Champions.
- 2:19:57Last year's winner, Richie Evans from Rome, New York, leads the field of the nation's outstanding modified drivers.
- 2:20:02That included Jeff Modine from the Pleasant Grove, North Carolina, Greg Sacks from New York,
- 2:20:07Sonny Seaman of Vernon Center, New York, Phone Stevens of Connecticut, and a number of other drivers.
- 2:20:14The 100 car field includes drivers from Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
- 2:20:20The fastest 46 cars in time trials in two weeks from the special Sunday morning qualifying races
- 2:20:25will take the green flag at 1 o'clock Sunday for the 300 lap, 225 mile race on the three quarter mile oval.
- 2:20:33The fifth annual Mini Stock Car Race of Champions will be held on Saturday.
- 2:20:37Six of the assorted modified Mini Stocks will take the field, representing 17 states and Canada.
- 2:20:46Bottom of the sixth at Yankee Stadium, all tied up at 1-1 between New York and Boston.
- 2:20:51They're going into the top of the sixth and the dry tonight, and the Tigers lead 3-4 to 3.
- 2:20:56In Milwaukee, bottom of the fifth, Milwaukee leads Seattle 3-0.
- 2:21:01California has a 3-2 edge over Texas in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 2:21:05Oakland and Kansas City at the end of four. Kansas City leads at 6-0.
- 2:21:09Chicago's at Minnesota, and Mini leads Chicago 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 2:21:15Chuck?
- 2:21:16Well, here is Doug DeSensei in the bottom of the eighth inning. DeSensei tonight on a one for three evening.
- 2:21:21DeSensei, Melanger, and Bumrey are the new batters to the left-hander Paul Marabella.
- 2:21:27He's done an excellent bit of work to keep into the ball game.
- 2:21:30He's been swinging the ground ball down third base side.
- 2:21:33Powell comes up with a nice pick up the throw.
- 2:21:35The first is in time to get Doug DeSensei for the first out of the inning.
- 2:21:39And on that play will pause for station identification.
- 2:21:42This is the Orioles Baseball Network.
- 2:21:45This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:21:50DeSensei's ground ball down the third base side, not sharply hit, and Howells came charging down the line.
- 2:22:01Made a glove hand pick up and a snap throw to first justice time to get DeSensei.
- 2:22:05Now the batter is Melanger. The pitch, blown away, ball one.
- 2:22:09Clark Walsh that scored when Bumrey hit his ninth home run of the year back in the third inning.
- 2:22:15Hit it to a fourth place, told the base and scored again on the fourth inning.
- 2:22:19Here's a five off toward the gap, left center field.
- 2:22:21Baylor cruises over at the center field to make the catch for the second out.
- 2:22:26Two down, down. The batter's going to be out.
- 2:22:30Bumrey, Bumrey on a two for three night with two runs batted in and three runs scored.
- 2:22:36That's the total base.
- 2:22:39Bumrey now needs 17 more hits for the 200 mark.
- 2:22:52Two out of the inning, nobody on, and Marabella ready to go.
- 2:22:55The left hander's pitch to Bumrey, drag, rips over the outside corner, let her hide.
- 2:23:03Marabella has allowed but two Orioles hits, it's three plus innings.
- 2:23:07Breaking ball, hit of the dirt at the second base and comes up and a head high hop.
- 2:23:11Garcia's throw to first is the final out of the inning at the end of eighth.
- 2:23:14Orioles five, Toronto five.
- 2:23:19In the National League, Montreal now leading St. Louis by the score of three to one.
- 2:23:24Montreal trying to put some distance between it and the rest of the race in the National League's
- 2:23:30division, Philadelphia already losing earlier in the day.
- 2:23:33Philadelphia knocked off by Chicago four to three.
- 2:23:36Four runs, nine hits, two errors for the Cubs, three eight and oh for Philadelphia.
- 2:23:40Locke, Brewster and McGraw for Philadelphia.
- 2:23:43Russel, Tidro, Hernandez and Smith for Chicago.
- 2:23:46Smith got the win, he's two and oh.
- 2:23:48Brewster the loser, his record is two and one.
- 2:23:51And you ask how well does the last place team 24 games out of first place draw on an afternoon?
- 2:23:56The answer, 4352 at Wrigley Field.
- 2:24:02So that loss, Philadelphia at the moment is two games behind Montreal.
- 2:24:0779 wins, 67 losses for the Fills, but that will quite possibly go to two and a half if Montreal
- 2:24:14hangs in there with that three to one lead over St. Louis and winds up winning this ballgame.
- 2:24:19Should Montreal lose the ballgame?
- 2:24:22Well then Philadelphia will remain a game and a half back.
- 2:24:25Pittsburgh is leading New York by the score of four to three.
- 2:24:28That ballgame in the bottom of the sixth at Three Rivers Stadium.
- 2:24:32Lynch and Miller for New York.
- 2:24:34Roden is pitching for the Pirates.
- 2:24:36So Pittsburgh four to three over New York, bottom of the sixth at Pittsburgh.
- 2:24:42Atlanta and San Diego just getting underway.
- 2:24:44Alexander against Murrah.
- 2:24:46Alexander is 13 and eight.
- 2:24:47Murrah is six and seven.
- 2:24:49Later on Cincinnati at Los Angeles, Houston at San Francisco.
- 2:24:53Well we're ready to go now to the top of the ninth inning at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 2:24:57A five-five tie is on the board.
- 2:25:00And it's been that way since Hodgson's home run back in the sixth inning.
- 2:25:03And here now is Ernie Witt.
- 2:25:06Ernie, a left-handed swinger to the right-handed offering to the dentist.
- 2:25:10Witt has walked, singled, and fly to center field.
- 2:25:15Now the Martinez pitch to Witt.
- 2:25:17Here's a high fly ball into center field.
- 2:25:19Coming on is center fielder, Bumrey.
- 2:25:21And he's there to make the catch for the routine fly for the first half.
- 2:25:25One away.
- 2:25:27And the batter now will be Alfredo Griffin.
- 2:25:30All for four tonight, fly to center.
- 2:25:32Reached in the field, a choice, stuck out and flying to left.
- 2:25:35Alfredo Griffin.
- 2:25:41Yankee, Floretz on one-one at the end of sixth.
- 2:25:50The Martinez pitch to Griffin, he's square the bun.
- 2:25:53He's got a ball low and outside.
- 2:26:07Now the one-nothing pitch.
- 2:26:08Martinez throws.
- 2:26:09Swing and a pitch.
- 2:26:11One ball, one strike.
- 2:26:12Well, apparently a little foul tipped into the middle of the catcher, definitely.
- 2:26:16As we follow the tie, Kohana's late on fire for their most.
- 2:26:19One ball, one strike.
- 2:26:25Martinez rocks over the rubber and delivers.
- 2:26:27Here's the punt foul right back to the screen.
- 2:26:30Ball and two strikes.
- 2:26:36Well, out of five-five tie at the top of the ninth inning,
- 2:26:38you'd have to say that's a pretty good idea, I think.
- 2:26:40On behalf of Alfredo Griffin, kind of punt his way on.
- 2:26:46With a count of all the two strikes, Dennis now wants another baseball to work with.
- 2:26:50Floretz provides it.
- 2:26:54Alfredo was a left-handed batter against Dennis
- 2:26:56and played well toward the alley in the left-center field by Al Bumbrey.
- 2:27:00Shattow was favoring the line in the left-field corner by Gary Renneke, the one-two pitch.
- 2:27:06Breaking ball hit a bird off the first-base side.
- 2:27:14The attendance at Memorial Stadium tonight, 12,706.
- 2:27:29One out, nobody on, and the Martinez with the arm down,
- 2:27:31the right-hander throws just missing.
- 2:27:33Oh, outside, right at the outside corner, right at the knees.
- 2:27:36Took a little off the pitch, but it was just a bit out of them strikes.
- 2:27:43And the two-two pitch.
- 2:27:49Martinez works, popping up off the third-base side.
- 2:27:52Melanger, the shortstop of the skin of the infield, is calling for it.
- 2:27:56That's the second out of the inning, two down at the top of the ninth.
- 2:28:01And the batter now, Donesto Garcia, who's single, struck out and then twice,
- 2:28:06rounded out to the shortstop, Melanger.
- 2:28:11And the home run by Paul Hodgson tied the game in the sixth inning.
- 2:28:15Dennis is not allowed a base hit.
- 2:28:18The only man to reach was Lloyd Mosby in the eighth inning with a one-out walk.
- 2:28:23Pitch outside, ball one.
- 2:28:33Well, the Yankees and the Red Sox are in the same kind of a ball game in New York tonight
- 2:28:37as the Orioles and Toronto.
- 2:28:42High foul ball is hit down the first-base side.
- 2:28:45It's going to be into the season out of play.
- 2:28:48One ball, one strike now to Garcia.
- 2:29:09Dennis shakes off a sign from Rick Dempsey, now gets the one he wants.
- 2:29:13And here is his one-one offering.
- 2:29:15Ground ball hit down the third-base side to Sensei has deep behind the back.
- 2:29:18The long throw is okay.
- 2:29:20Three-up, three-down go the Blue Jays at the end of eight and a half.
- 2:29:23Orioles five, Toronto five.
- 2:29:26The Australians squeezed a magnificent first victory out of the United States Defender Friday
- 2:29:31in a seesawing America's Cup contest, finished after dark under the blue beacons of Coast Guard cutters.
- 2:29:37Australia nabbed almost a half a minute late at the first mark,
- 2:29:41expanded it to nearly a minute by the fourth mark, lost it entirely on the next to the last leg,
- 2:29:46then grabbed it again only a half mile from the finish line.
- 2:29:49The Aussies have thus nodded the best of seven series at one race apiece.
- 2:29:54The odd Australia started a fifth downward leg with a 46-second lead.
- 2:29:58Then in whispering breezes, Freedom crept past Australia's around the final mark with a 21-second advantage.
- 2:30:05The American 12-meter grabbed the commanding lead on the final upwind leg,
- 2:30:09then Australia crawled ahead tacking a startling 32 times in a dying breeze
- 2:30:14to win unofficially by a minute with only a few minutes to spare toward the deadline.
- 2:30:19On the fourth leg, Freedom managed to carve out only one second off the Aussies' 47-second lead,
- 2:30:24even though the Challengers dropped their spinnaker overboard and lost some ground
- 2:30:28while they struggled with flailing lines starting that leg.
- 2:30:32The winds were very light, just six to seven knots.
- 2:30:36What a job Dennis Martinez has done from the bullpen so far tonight.
- 2:30:42It relieves the Jim Palmer, five and two-thirds innings, giving up just a run on two hits, striking out two, and walking only one.
- 2:30:49Look at the scoreboard, they're into the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium tonight, New York, and Boston all set up at one-one.
- 2:30:55Dower's going to lead it off, we go to the bottom of the ninth inning, and back to you Chuck.
- 2:30:59Well here is Dower, let's take a look at some of those gains in the National League.
- 2:31:03Nothing to report yet on Cincinnati and Los Angeles, they'll not start until 10.30.
- 2:31:07Houston and San Francisco will start at about the same time, so that's another 20 minutes or so.
- 2:31:12Montreal three, Cardinals one, they're in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 2:31:17And the pitch to Dower, low and inside for a ball.
- 2:31:20The Pirates four, the Mets three, they have completed seventh inning.
- 2:31:25And this afternoon the Cubs, with a two-run ninth inning, beat the Phillies four to three.
- 2:31:30Now the one-hitting pitch to Dower.
- 2:31:35Here's a line drive to the right field, it's going to drop for the Bay fifth, mostly part of the charge.
- 2:31:40Then decided, wait a minute, I better be sure of this.
- 2:31:44And Dower starts the ninth with a solid shot to right field, his third hit in five trips tonight.
- 2:31:53And we're going to get Drongo Hayswood running for Rich Dower.
- 2:32:00Hayswood will run, and this is Hayswood's Major League debut.
- 2:32:06He has never been in a big league ball game and now is running for Rich Dower.
- 2:32:14And out of the Toronto Bullpen they've got Willis the left-hander and Barlow the right-hander, warming.
- 2:32:23And the batter will be Ken Singleton.
- 2:32:26Drongo Hayswood, a young man who has a lot of potential.
- 2:32:30The set by Mirabella and the pitch to Singleton has a place for Glow, ball one.
- 2:32:37Red Sox and the Yankees, they're now in the bottom of the seventh inning and it is still the Yankees one.
- 2:32:43The Red Sox one, to the best of our knowledge, it's Renko and Te'an.
- 2:32:50Now the one-nothing pitch inside ball two to Singleton.
- 2:33:00Two and O to count to Singleton, the runner at first base for Rich Dower is Drongo Hayswood.
- 2:33:09Mirabella ready, the two-nothing to Singleton.
- 2:33:13It's a ball three just outside. Mirabella physically deserves over the ball.
- 2:33:19And Ernie Witt the catcher is also doing a little yanking to Salermo.
- 2:33:25I'll tell you one thing, I have to give this Toronto ball club a lot of credit.
- 2:33:30They are not the kind of a club that's going to win a championship for a little while,
- 2:33:33but boy they have played in great fashion against the Orioles and Yankees.
- 2:33:37Three-nothing to Singleton, ball four is too high.
- 2:33:40Down to second base goes Hayswood.
- 2:33:44Singleton has walked.
- 2:33:47That will be the second walk issued by Mirabella.
- 2:33:51And now Mark Corey is going to run for Ken Singleton.
- 2:34:01Singleton is out of the ball game.
- 2:34:03Dennis Menke has gone to the mound and it looks as though he might.
- 2:34:06Yes he is, he's going to take the ball from Mirabella who has given the Toronto Blue Jays
- 2:34:11a pretty darn good relief since tonight in Baltimore.
- 2:34:14And while the new pitcher makes his way to the mound, let us pause for this message.
- 2:34:20In case you missed it, here's what happened in the National League on Thursday, just three games.
- 2:34:26Houston over Cincinnati 10-2, Atlanta beat San Francisco 2-1,
- 2:34:30and it was Los Angeles over San Diego 7-3.
- 2:34:34The Dodgers were leading those Thursday games.
- 2:34:36Montreal leading Philadelphia by a game and a half,
- 2:34:38Pittsburgh 5-back, in the West the Dodgers leading Houston by one,
- 2:34:42and Cincinnati 5-and-a-half back.
- 2:34:44However, earlier on Friday, Chicago over Philadelphia 4-3,
- 2:34:51Smith, the winning pitcher in relief, Bruce is a loser.
- 2:34:54Four runs nine hits, two errors for the Cubs, 3-8 and 0 for Philadelphia.
- 2:34:58The Cubs winning it in the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 2:35:00so at the moment Philadelphia trails by two games,
- 2:35:03and it won't fluctuate a half a game either way.
- 2:35:05Thursday in the American League, Boston 8, Cleveland 3,
- 2:35:08Baltimore 7, Detroit 3, New York 8-7 and 13 in the completion of a suspended game over Toronto,
- 2:35:14and Toronto won the second game 2-1, Milwaukee 2-2 for Minnesota,
- 2:35:19Kansas City over California, Texas beat Oakland 10-6,
- 2:35:23and Chicago dropped Seattle by the score of 5-4.
- 2:35:27So in the East, New York leading Baltimore by five games,
- 2:35:30Kansas City has already clinched in the West.
- 2:35:32Kansas City at the moment leading Oakland by some 17-and-a-half games.
- 2:35:38He goes four innings plus two batters.
- 2:35:44They're both his responsibility at first and second.
- 2:35:47He did not give up a run.
- 2:35:50He did give up three hits.
- 2:35:52He struck out three and he walked two.
- 2:35:54Willis is now into the game, and we'll take a look at Mike's record so far.
- 2:35:58It's 1-0. In 14 games, his ERA,.93.
- 2:36:05He's worked a total of 19 in the third inning.
- 2:36:08He's given up 14 hits, only two runs.
- 2:36:10He's only given up the home runs each one time.
- 2:36:13He has walked eight while striking out 11.
- 2:36:16So Willis is in the pitch for the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 2:36:19There are runners at first and second, pitch runners.
- 2:36:22Hayes-Wood is at second base, and Corey is at first.
- 2:36:26Dower led off the inning with a single.
- 2:36:28Hayes-Wood went in to run for him.
- 2:36:30Single and then one in, and walk.
- 2:36:32Corey went in to run for him.
- 2:36:34Willis indicates that he's headed out, so as far as warm-up activity is concerned.
- 2:36:39And here comes Denny.
- 2:36:41Eddie Murray the batter with Oriole runners.
- 2:36:44Hayes-Wood is the lead runner at second base.
- 2:36:47Mark Corey running for single at first base.
- 2:36:51And Toronto defensively figures that maybe Eddie Murray of the Orioles will go to the
- 2:36:56bond against the left-handed True Ball of Mike Willis, the fifth.
- 2:37:00He takes low ball one.
- 2:37:03No indication of a bond from Eddie Murray.
- 2:37:11Now the last time I saw Willis against the Orioles was Friday night up at Toronto, the 12th of September.
- 2:37:18He came on in the eighth inning in relief of Joey McLaughlin who did a heck of a job.
- 2:37:23He gave up only one base hit in an inning and two thirds, the fifth.
- 2:37:28Ground ball at the third base, but he shot up and told a second that's one on the first
- 2:37:32and a double play, and Hayes-Wood moved in two third base.
- 2:37:36Murray hits into a 5-4-3 double play.
- 2:37:41And Mike Willis is proving again that he is more than adequate coming out of that bullpen.
- 2:37:48And now Gary Renneke in the bottom of the ninth inning with two out in a 5-5-5.
- 2:37:56Gary Renneke will face Mike Willis.
- 2:38:02Now Renneke enters the ball game as a pinch batter in the fifth inning was hit by a pitch.
- 2:38:11Then in the seventh inning he broke the pitch by Mirabella very well, hit it deep to center, and Baylor ran it down.
- 2:38:18Two out now, runner at third is Hayes-Wood, the pitch to Renneke.
- 2:38:22Fly ball, center field, Baylor is waiting for it.
- 2:38:25And the Toronto center fielder wraps it up for the final out.
- 2:38:28Willis has throttled the Orioles again at the end of nine, Baltimore five, Toronto five.
- 2:38:36They're back home but plenty scared.
- 2:38:38I'm Keith Berman.
- 2:38:39The 1,000 residents evacuated from their homes in Damascus, Arkansas are home again.
- 2:38:43They're still talking about that overnight fire and explosion of rock the Titan II missile silo injuring 22 Air Force personnel.
- 2:38:50No radiation escape, we're told.
- 2:38:52The Strategic Air Command will either confirm nor deny an ABC News report
- 2:38:56about the Titan's nuclear warheadless catapult out of the silo when the explosion occurred.
- 2:39:00The Pentagon says not to worry, the fail-safe technology worked.

- 2:39:10to view what they call the evidence of crimes and spying equipment.

- 2:39:34Keith Berman, ABC, contemporary news.
- 2:39:37At Kansas City, the Kansas City Royals and the Oakland A's, after six innings of play,
- 2:39:43after five innings, it's Kansas City 10, Oakland nothing but the big news, George Brett.
- 2:39:49Second time up, sacrifice fly, no charge to bat, second time at bat, base hit, batting average an even 400.
- 2:39:55Second time up, officially, fair setting, base hit, he's two for two, and batting 401.
- 2:40:08Well, at X-Ring ballgames this year, the Orioles have had it a little bit tough.
- 2:40:12They've won four and they have lost six.
- 2:40:15The Blue Jays have done a whole lot better in X-Ring ballgames, they've played quite a few more.
- 2:40:20They have won nine and lost six.
- 2:40:22Kiko Garcia, now the Orioles' second baseman, the new right fielder is Mark Corey,
- 2:40:27and it'll be Roy Howell against Dennis Martinez in the top of the tenth, and we turn you back to Tom Lahr.
- 2:40:32Thank you, Chuck. Here's the first pitch from Dennis Martinez, swinging a miss at a breaking pitch from Dennis.
- 2:40:36Dennis has gone five and two-thirds tonight, giving up a run on two hits, striking out two and walking one.
- 2:40:42He's in this game in relief of Jim Palmer.
- 2:40:46Howell is the leadoff batter for Toronto, the next pitch of Martinez's high, one ball and one strike.
- 2:40:52Roy tonight is one for four, he's singled in the fifth inning.
- 2:40:56He'll be followed by Mayberry and Steve Braun.
- 2:40:59Here's the one-one pitch to Dennis, and he follows it back, one ball and two strikes to come.
- 2:41:05Toronto took the early lead, three to one.
- 2:41:07The Orioles got one back in the first, then they tied it in the Toronto one-off.
- 2:41:12In front, now we'll get to that in just a moment.
- 2:41:17Now we have a fan running onto the field towards Doug DeSensei, and now this entire crowd is going to be inconvenient.
- 2:41:25I was starting to tell you about the scoring.
- 2:41:27Now the entire crowd is going to be inconvenienced by some dingbat who has just run onto the field, and now he's headed for center field.
- 2:41:35And I'll tell you what, Baltimore's finest will get the cups on him in a few minutes.
- 2:41:44The Orioles tied the game in the third inning, and Toronto went up in front four to three in the fourth inning,
- 2:41:54and the Birds came back to take the lead five to four, Toronto tied it in the sixth inning.
- 2:42:00We now see that they have that man in custody, and we're ready to get back to the game of baseball.
- 2:42:07One ball, two strikes to count the house.
- 2:42:09Dennis down the hill with his next pitch swing, and he got a piece of it.
- 2:42:13One ball and two strikes, a breaking pitch from Dennis Martinez.
- 2:42:17When Dennis pitched against the Blue Jays at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto last Sunday, he was the loser, and he just was not very effective in that game.
- 2:42:27The 90's been very sharp. Knock on wood.
- 2:42:37One ball, two strikes pitch is on the way, and it's lined down into the left field area, and it's a foul ball.
- 2:42:45Roy Howell goes to the opposite field, and that one wasn't far, a foul by too much.
- 2:42:49Sammy Stewart and Tiffy Martinez are warming up the Oriole bullpen.
- 2:42:53Bobby Brown has hit a home run on the seventh inning with nobody on for the Yankees, and they've taken a two-to-one lead over the Red Sox.
- 2:43:00The outfield is pretty well spread out against this left-hander.
- 2:43:06Again, Dennis will come home with a one-two pitch. It's on the way, and there's a looper hit out in the center field.
- 2:43:11Bumpery charges in, and he'll make some hits, and Howell is the first out in the tenth inning.
- 2:43:16That'll bring up Mayberry.
- 2:43:19And Mayberry has a ten-game inning streak on the line tonight.
- 2:43:23He has not yet extended it to eleven. He walked in the first inning of the quarter run, popped up in the third, went down on strikes in the fifth, and pops up again in the seventh.
- 2:43:32Big left-handed batter against the right-handed pitching of Dennis Martinez with one out and nobody on. It's all tied up at five-five.
- 2:43:40First pitch is a ball. One ball and no strikes to come. Steve Brown, the designated hitter, is on deck.
- 2:43:46They play Mayberry to go to right field.
- 2:43:49One ball pitch, and it's a called strike. One ball and one strike to count.
- 2:43:56Good heartbreaking stuff from Dennis Martinez.
- 2:44:01So the Bobby Brown home run of the seventh puts the Yankees up two-one against the Red Sox.
- 2:44:10Here in Baltimore, five runs on eleven hits from the Orioles, five runs on eight hits. Well, the Serrano Bluejays, and now it looks as if...
- 2:44:19Well, it looks like he might have given him the sun. What do you think, Chuckie?
- 2:44:22It looks to me as though by Palermo's gesture he's invited Mayberry to take his act to the dugout.
- 2:44:29Now, you could misinterpret that gesture, but it looks to me like Palermo was just saying, hey, that's enough. I'm not going to listen anymore. You're gone.
- 2:44:38Well, the count is one ball and one strike, and by the reaction to the manager, Chuck, Bobby Maddux, you know, if he was going to stay in the game, he wouldn't be coming out and put up the beef.
- 2:44:47But Palermo, you know, usually they'll give the thumb or the direct side to the dugout.
- 2:44:51Steve Palermo, just in an underhanded manner, pointed over towards the Serrano dugout, and that looks like a different Mayberry with the count of one ball and one strike.
- 2:45:01I'll say one thing, John didn't put up much of a fuss. He went over and got his say, and now he's slowly walking off the field.
- 2:45:09And Bobby Maddux is now still going at it with Palermo. He's pointing out a guess to the scoreboard.
- 2:45:15And, you know, the Toronto Bluejays, they're not laying down for anybody. They played the Yankee stuff in Yankee Stadium. They played the Orioles stuff last weekend.
- 2:45:24Here we are on the 10th inning tonight of a 5-5 game, and their man with the big net, John Mayberry, 26-hole run, gets what I think is a mighty quick thumb in this situation.
- 2:45:36I don't know about you, Chuck, from Palermo, and it seemed to happen to Weaver in Detroit last week, but here's a player who's very important. He must have done pretty bad.
- 2:45:44Well, apparently Mayberry had to say something that would be, you know, really, really uncalled for, or Palermo would not have reacted the way he did.
- 2:45:54But that's a very difficult, you know, blow for the Bluejays.
- 2:46:01Mayberry just had to say something that was very, very out of line, and Palermo just told him to leave.
- 2:46:07And it'll be Willie Upshaw. Willie Upshaw will now take over for John Mayberry.
- 2:46:16Mayberry now is in there with 26-hole runs and 77 runs batted in, and now Upshaw will move in. He has yet to hit a home run.
- 2:46:27He has three runs batted in. He's only been up here for 25 ball games and is hitting 163.
- 2:46:34Kansas City's George Brett, single again in the fifth inning. He's now two for two tonight, Tom. And the Brett batting average is 401.
- 2:46:43Boy, that fry advice is really paying off, isn't it? Apparently they're listening a little bit, yeah.
- 2:46:50Birdmeier is now pitching for Boston in the seventh inning. Bobby Brown-Homert for the Yankees up there to make it now to New York 2, Boston 1, and they're still at the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:47:01One ball, one strike, and here is Upshaw against Dennis Martinez. Sorry, Tom.
- 2:47:06Dennis will look in and get the sign from Dempsey.
- 2:47:10Here's the 1-1 pitch to Willie Upshaw at a tie, two balls and one strike. The sentry a third for the Orioles. The Langer is short.
- 2:47:17Kiko Garcia now the second baseman. Eddie Murray at first. Dempsey behind the plate. Graham started the game.
- 2:47:22Murray in center field and Renneke in left. 2-1 pitch is on the way to Upshaw, and he fouls one off on the left side.
- 2:47:31Gary Renneke straight away in left field. Al Bumpery against this left-hander is cut to the left field side, and Corey is playing straight away against Willie Upshaw in right field.
- 2:47:43John Mayberry has been thrown out of the game.
- 2:47:49Murray with a long look to Dempsey, rather Martinez, and here's the pitch, and they pop him up to the left side.
- 2:47:55The Langer is moving over under. That is DeSensei, and Mark will give way to Doug, and he'll make the catch.
- 2:48:03So Upshaw pops up to DeSensei, and you better believe that Bobby Gattick is really doing the slow burn now.
- 2:48:09Here's a guy with a 10-game innings streak on the line. Five home runs in 10 games.
- 2:48:14Hasn't had a hit tonight. Maybe you'd say he's due. Now Mayberry must have said something to Steve Palermo.
- 2:48:21I imagine he had to use some kind of profanity to get the thumb that quick.
- 2:48:25Here's Braun with two outs and nobody on, and Martinez pitches in there for a call strike.
- 2:48:34Braun is one for Fordham, and one for three with a walk.
- 2:48:39Dennis is one strike pitch. Call strike two. Martinez changes up and brings one in at the letters.
- 2:48:45Two strikes to count with two outs.
- 2:48:53Dennis will work again. Here's the pitch, and it's low. One ball, two strikes to count.
- 2:48:58The Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays all nodded up at 5-5. We're in the top of the 10th inning.
- 2:49:08A pitch, a ground ball foul on the right side. Someone's up in the Oriole bullpen, but I'll tell you what,
- 2:49:12they're not warming up, they're just standing and looking at what's going on here.
- 2:49:20Sammy Stewart and Tippie are up, just keeping an eye on Martinez. He's sparkled and released tonight.
- 2:49:28Two outs for the Blue Jays. Braun trying to keep them going here in the 10th inning.
- 2:49:32The on deck batter is Mosley.
- 2:49:35One-two pitch. It's low ball two. Two balls and two strikes to count.
- 2:49:46The starters in this game, Jim Palmer. He has long departed.
- 2:49:55Here comes the 2-2 delivery high fly ball right field, Corey going back, Dill going back. Home run.
- 2:50:01D. Braun. The lights have not gone up, but they have dimmed somewhat as Braun goes deep against Dennis Martinez,
- 2:50:11the first home run for Braun this year.
- 2:50:16And the Toronto Blue Jays have taken the lead by a score of 6-5.
- 2:50:22Mike Miller, Lloyd Mosby.
- 2:50:30Lloyd Mosby is now the batter.
- 2:50:38Mosby steps in against Dennis. Here's the first pitch to Lloyd.
- 2:50:43And it's a ball, one ball and no strikes to count.
- 2:50:46Mosby tonight is one for three, two run double. And he's walked. The pitch to him has fouled off.
- 2:50:57Jackson Todd, the starter for the Toronto Blue Jays. He's at his shower.
- 2:51:05Now Steve Braun, if you're a Blue Jays fan, takes a great time to get his first home run.
- 2:51:10He's not known as a power hitter. Here comes the 1-1 delivery. It's high.
- 2:51:14Two balls and one strike to count.
- 2:51:25Dempsey. That's the target again for Dennis.
- 2:51:28Pitch is on the way and a line drive out into left center field. That's going to fall in for a base hit.
- 2:51:35A big turn by Mosby at first and he'll get back.
- 2:51:38So Dennis started the inning getting a high ball to center field.
- 2:51:43Then Upshaw popped up. Upshaw came in to take the place of John Mayberry who was thrown out. Braun goes deep to right field.
- 2:51:51Mosby singles to left center. And now here's pitching coach Ray Miller.
- 2:51:56And there is activity underway in the Oreo bullpen.
- 2:52:02Toronto has taken the lead 6-5. Six runs on ten hits for the Blue Jays and five runs, eleven hits for the Orioles.
- 2:52:11Now the birds have come back. Walden wants tonight. They'll have to do it again now.
- 2:52:17Bob Baylor is up.
- 2:52:20Baylor grounded out his first time up in the first inning.
- 2:52:23Then he singled in the fourth, dropped up in the sixth and lined up in the eighth inning.
- 2:52:29Gostich is now pitching for New York in the eighth inning.
- 2:52:38Mosby the runner at first base.
- 2:52:43Now the pitch almost gets away from Dempsey. One ball and no strikes to count. The Yankees leading Boston 2-1.
- 2:52:51I think the best line I heard on Gostich this year was by Lowenstein. They asked him, you know, was that a strike he threw you in?
- 2:52:56Lowenstein said to him after an appearance here at the stadium, it sounded like a strike.
- 2:53:02The runner goes. Here's the pitch. It's high. Dempsey fires one out to second base. Carthi and Kiko drops the ball.
- 2:53:11Mosby was going on the pitch. The count is now 2-0 to Bobby Baylor.
- 2:53:17Credit Mosby with a stolen base.
- 2:53:19And it's his third on the year.
- 2:53:29Mosby now in scoring position. 2-0 the count to Baylor.
- 2:53:36Dennis looks to second. Here's the pitch to Bob Baylor. There's a high fly ball out to left field, shallow left field.
- 2:53:42Kiko runs it. He moves under it. Makes the catch. And that's all for the Toronto Blue Jays. And now before they pick up a run on the draw, an all-run.
- 2:53:49Again, the nine and a half to score is Toronto 6, Baltimore 5.
- 2:53:53All-time Monday winner spectacular bid is the solid favorite in a field of three for Saturday's Woodward Stakes at New York's Belmont Park.
- 2:54:01The first leg of the championship series, the Marlboro Cup, belongs to winner's tail, Espeedy Gelding, who captured the event by four and a half lengths two weeks ago.
- 2:54:11Trainer Bud Delfin says that it doesn't matter whether there are two of 22 horses in the race. He says we're in great shape and we are ready.
- 2:54:19The Woodward Wait for Age race should be a three-horse contest between bid, winter's tail, and Speedy Dr. Patches.
- 2:54:27Belmont Stakes winner, Temperance Hill, is also entered.
- 2:54:31But will be scratched unless bid or winter's tail are withdrawn first.
- 2:54:41Linebacker John Mooring, cut by the Detroit Lions earlier this season, is signed with the injury play, Cleveland Browns, to fill the vacancy left by Jerry Scherck.
- 2:54:48Mooring is 6'3", weighs 2'30", and was released by the Lions after the first regular season game.
- 2:54:54The 23-year-old was an eighth-round draft pick by Detroit last year.
- 2:54:58Well, we're going to the bottom of the 10th inning before we get there.
- 2:55:03Maddox Bobby is out talking to Palermo again, and I would think this gentleman of many years standing in baseball is letting Palermo get a little bit of a blast.
- 2:55:12And Palermo, of course, who is the umpire with the ability to dispatch players from the game if he thinks that their conduct is, you know, contrary to what it should be.
- 2:55:22I'm not sure whether Maddox is out of the ballgame or not. He might have been thrown out.
- 2:55:26But the problem for the Orioles is immediate. They need a run. They need it right now.
- 2:55:32And it will be Benny Aiello, Nick Gensley, and Doug DeFente in the bottom of the 10th inning against a fellow by the name of Mike Willis, who at his last 12 appearance for the Blue Jays has not given up a run.
- 2:55:47And he puts water all over the fire for the Orioles in the ninth. They have runners at first and second.
- 2:55:52He got Murray to ground into a double play and then Longstein with double and a fly ball to center field.
- 2:55:57That was the end of that. I have a take the pitch high. One ball and no strikes to count.
- 2:56:02The screwballer, Mike Willis to Benny Aiello. Here's the next pitch and a check swing foul ball back off the screen.
- 2:56:09He's got a kind of a pitch. If you're sitting up here in the stands and you see him throw it, you say, gee, I ought to be able to hit that pitch to Kingman Town.
- 2:56:16The only trouble is it starts bombing and floating when it reaches the plate.
- 2:56:22Well, the Orioles need a run to tie at bottom of the 10th inning. One on one to count to Benny Aiello.
- 2:56:28Here's the pitch to Benny and there's a fly ball out to shallow left field. Alfredo Griffin is calling for it. He makes the catch.
- 2:56:35And Benny Aiello is up number one in the 10th.
- 2:56:44Batter is Rick Dempsey. Dempsey came on the pitch to hit the gram and the 10th inning went down on strikes and he popped up in the seventh inning.
- 2:56:53Dempsey's looking for a hit tonight. This could be a very demoralizing loss for the Orioles.
- 2:57:01The pitch to Dempsey is high for a ball. Ryan Opside, one ball and no strikes to count.
- 2:57:12Dempsey steps in. Here's the one-all delivery. There's a line drive left field base hit.
- 2:57:18So Dempsey singles the left.
- 2:57:26All-line drive on one skip that made it to the outfield and that will bring up Doug Vicenta.
- 2:57:31Now Vicenta is the Orioles leading hitter against the Toronto Blue Cays this year.
- 2:57:38And Eddie Murray went on his off-squat in the four-game series of the exhibition stadium.
- 2:57:43Doug on the year hitting very well against Toronto 375.
- 2:57:52Dempsey the runner at first. Desensei is up. Here's the pitch to Doug and it's a ball. One ball and no strikes to count.
- 2:57:59I don't think there's anybody on this club right now that would like to deliver more than Doug Desensei.
- 2:58:04We had some remarks about Doug being in the doghouse for a statement he made after the Orioles lost to Tigers 8-3.
- 2:58:15And what he says is that Dempsey said bring in the dogs, put up a fire, the hunt is over.
- 2:58:21Right now he'd like to keep the hunt alive.
- 2:58:24The one ball pitch to Desensei, the ground ball on 12-3 to Griffin. It's off his club out into right center field for a base hit. Dempsey will go all the way to third.
- 2:58:35Desensei on what looked like a routine ground ball out to Alfredo Griffin.
- 2:58:41He had ran up his leg and out into right center field and they're going to give a base hit.
- 2:58:47An error brother, an error to the shortstop Alfredo Griffin. And Alfredo Griffin, this is one problem he's had this year.
- 2:58:57He has committed 34 errors to second base. Dempsey wasted no time going down to third base on the error by Alfredo Griffin.
- 2:59:07He just misplayed the ball and ran up his leg and jammed out into right center field.
- 2:59:15Well the Orioles are alive and well here in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 2:59:23There is one out. Mark Black was the schedule batter and now Earl Weaver is calling on Lee May.
- 2:59:36You talk to Lee about the 1980 season, the one thing he'll tell you is that, I think he'll tell you I'm disappointed that I haven't made more of a contribution.
- 2:59:46Well he's got a chance right now. He'll try to figure out the stuff of this junk baller.
- 2:59:54Mike Willis, one out, runners at first and third and Lee May is pinching in for Belanger.
- 3:00:00Here's the pitch to May, there's the ground ball and it's a fair ball to the left side of the third base line.
- 3:00:06Dempsey comes home to try the game and Desensay will hold it up at third base as Lee May goes into second base.
- 3:00:13The big slumper from Birmingham does it. A ground ball right up the line at third. Howell went over trying to make the play on it.
- 3:00:21He couldn't. Lee May delivers and we're all mad up at 6'6 and they're off their feet at 33rd Street.
- 3:00:33Chuck, you've got a couple of points that I'd like to make right now.
- 3:00:39Number one, I'm sure a lot of people wondered about Earl Weaver and the bunt in the ninth inning with runners at first and second and Eddie Murray at the plate.
- 3:00:47And then I'm sure some people wondered about Earl Weaver with Lee May who looks at a third strike for the base as long as Gervado in the top 13 in England.
- 3:00:57That's the kind of a manager Weaver is. He'll stay with the people he believes in. They made him what he is, brought him where he is and Lee May has just delivered a big base at the diet.
- 3:01:07As Bumbree is being given now an intentional walk with first base open, they are giving Bumbree an intentional walk and the Orioles have tied at 6'6 here in the bottom of the set.
- 3:01:19And you know Chuck, the fans feel great for Lee May. We feel good that he got the hit. But I'm telling you, those guys in the dugout feel better than anybody.
- 3:01:26How true. Lee May has done so much for the Orioles club for so many years and he has just got the ground ball between the diving Howell, the third and the fly.
- 3:01:38Rolled out in the left field, caromed off the box deep railing, may doubles, they had to stop the sensei a third base.
- 3:01:44And Lee May went to charging in the second and now Bobby Maddox is out there and he wants to talk to his third base, the Howell and his pitcher Mike Willis from the catcher tonight Ernie Witt.
- 3:01:56And the new batter for the Orioles will be Kiko Garcia. And behind Kiko it's Mark Corey.
- 3:02:06And now Palermo, the plate umpire, is headed for the mound and Bobby Maddox has apparently dispatched whatever information he found necessary.
- 3:02:15And I know this when Maddox walks off the mound, he deliberately looks away from the umpire Palermo.
- 3:02:22And now Maddox gets backpedaling into the dugout.
- 3:02:27And the batter will be Kiko Garcia. And here he comes and to get back to the action let's get right back to Tom Harn.
- 3:02:36Well here's another guy that has had problems at the bat this year, Kiko Garcia.
- 3:02:45He's had a horrendous year at the plate and he certainly is in a position now where he would love to contribute.
- 3:02:53A 1.99 hitter with a base is loaded, one out here is a pitch to Kiko and he fouls one back over three.
- 3:03:00Against Toronto, Kiko is a 3.81 hitter.
- 3:03:05As Sensei is at third base, Lina is at second and Bumbree is at first.
- 3:03:11Wouldn't like Mike Willis like to come up with a pitcher-sat friend right now to double play.
- 3:03:16The Orioles have tied it up. One strike to count to Kiko.
- 3:03:22There's no room for Garcia.
- 3:03:26Fly ball would tie it. Here's the pitch to Kiko and he fouls one off to the right.
- 3:03:32So the count to Garcia, two strikes, you would say the advantage usually of the situation goes to Mike Willis.
- 3:03:39Now the Toronto outfield is playing very shallow against Kiko Garcia. They know the fly ball is going to win the game.
- 3:03:46They're playing shallow and just about straight away against Garcia. They want to try to cut off that run coming home.
- 3:03:53Two strikes to count to Kiko. Willis is in one way and another chance.
- 3:03:56Here's the pitch to Garcia and he bumps down and gets a set. They caught up coming home and Desensei is tagged out.
- 3:04:04For the second out, Garcia is out on a strikeout.
- 3:04:09The squeeze play was on and Desensei was caught up for the second out. So the lights go out for the Orioles in the tenth inning.
- 3:04:17At the end of ten, it's Toronto six and Baltimore six.
- 3:04:22At Kansas City, the Royals pretty much putting it to Oakland after six. It's Kansas City thirteen. Oakland nothing.
- 3:04:30So the attention has been the case for the past several weeks. It's focused on George Brett.
- 3:04:35The first time up, he hit a sacrifice fly so he was not charged at the time.
- 3:04:40At that second time up, base hit, raised his average to 400.
- 3:04:44Next time up, base hit, raised his average to 401.
- 3:04:47Next time up, whoops, fly down to center field.
- 3:04:51So now he's two for three and his average is right at 400.
- 3:04:56George Brett hitting at 400, two for three.
- 3:05:00Earlier in that game, Willie Wilson stole his 29th consecutive base for Kansas City.
- 3:05:06And that establishes a new American League stolen base record for consecutive field.
- 3:05:12He established the record of 28 on Thursdays and now he's just surpassed his own record.
- 3:05:19Elsewhere on the scoreboard, California leading Texas five to two in the eighth inning in Arlington.
- 3:05:24Tanana for California, Matlack and Llewelyn for Texas.
- 3:05:28And Minnesota are now on the top of the eighth at Bloomington.
- 3:05:31Chicago leads it three to two.
- 3:05:36Well, we're ready to go to the 11th inning.
- 3:05:38Six-six now. The Orioles got the tie run in and they tried desperately to squeeze the winning run home.
- 3:05:46And Garcia just couldn't get the bat on the ball and Druckau trying to drop the squeeze.
- 3:05:52But they had defense. They hung out the drive between the plays on Thursday.
- 3:05:57Now we have some changes in the infield. It'll be Kiko Garcia moving over to shortstop.
- 3:06:02And at second base it'll be Lenz Cicada. Cicada is now at second base.
- 3:06:07Garcia is now the shortstop.
- 3:06:10And for the Toronto Blue Jays, one of the reasons that we're still battling in overtime tonight in Baltimore
- 3:06:17is the young man who's going to lead off to the top of the 11th, Paul Hodgson,
- 3:06:21hit his first major league home run back in the sixth inning to tie the game.
- 3:06:28Thank you, Chuck. And Hodgson will step in against Dennis Martinez.
- 3:06:31As Chuck told you, he went deep against Dennis. The first pitcher, Martinez, was high in type.
- 3:06:37The Orioles, the Amah has to send for a third. Garcia is at short. Lenz Cicada is at second.
- 3:06:42And Murray's at first.
- 3:06:44The pitch was high at tight top. It is next to bat, foul. One strike to the car.
- 3:06:51The next pitch swings at a miss. Dennis took something off that one. Two strikes to the car.
- 3:06:56Renike's in left. Murray in center. And Kors is in right.
- 3:07:08Next pitch to Hodgson's swing. And that's going to be the strikeoff, Victor, to Dennis Martinez.
- 3:07:15The only players who started this game for the Orioles who are still in it, Eddie Murray at first.
- 3:07:21Does since they have third. And now, Murray in center field.
- 3:07:26Ernie Witt steps up. He is one for three with a walk tonight.
- 3:07:40They play Ernie Witt to pull the ball to right field.
- 3:07:46Martinez pitch. And it's a ball one. One ball and no strikes to come.
- 3:07:56Six to six.
- 3:08:01Next delivery to Witt. High five, all foul over in the seats as Desense gets changed.
- 3:08:07Six runs off. Ten hits for the Toronto Blue Jays. Six off. Thirteen for the Orioles. Each team has an error.
- 3:08:15For sure, like the Orioles might put this game to bed with a victory in the last inning.
- 3:08:21I'll tell you, Mr. Willis and Madison James.
- 3:08:26The squeeze was put on and it didn't work.
- 3:08:32One-one pitch. And it's fouled into the box. One ball and two strikes to come. Alfredo Griffith is on deck.
- 3:08:38You know, he has to feel a little better right now because it was an error by Alfredo his thirty-fourth on the year.
- 3:08:45That went to the Orioles tying it up at the tenth.
- 3:08:53Now the Blue Jays lost it. Griffith would have had it on the go-horses.
- 3:08:58Nobody on. One-two pitch for Martinez is on the way and the breaking pitch is high. So the count will go to two and two.
- 3:09:07Sammy Stewart and Tippie up on the bullpen but not warming.
- 3:09:16Fastball on the ground. Out to Garcia and Short. Takes him on the high hop. The go-to first in time.
- 3:09:22And with his out. Six-three. So there are two outs with nobody on.
- 3:09:27Going down. Alfredo. Seven minutes.
- 3:09:31And here comes Alfredo. He is hit with in five trips to the plate tonight.
- 3:09:46Against Martinez he's gone down on strikes. Out on a fly ball to the left and he's popped up.
- 3:09:53First pitch to the switch hitter batting left handed is a called strike from Denman.
- 3:09:59These two teams will be here again tomorrow night.
- 3:10:03One strike pitch is fouled back so the count is two strikes.
- 3:10:19If there's ever a team that's not laying down for anybody, they will claw and fight.
- 3:10:24There's a two strike delivery. It's low. Griffin had a notion to go for it but didn't it.
- 3:10:30The Toronto Blue Jays close.
- 3:10:33Well George Brett struck out. I don't believe that. He's now only batting 399.
- 3:10:40One-two pitch ground ball foul.
- 3:10:43Sometimes you can look at a team like the California Angels with the Orioles face that.
- 3:10:47They just look like a listless team. They got up for one game here against the Orioles.
- 3:10:51They played well against them but when you look at the Blue Jays, it's not a team loaded with superstars and high salaries.
- 3:10:58A lot of guys trying to survive in the bigs.
- 3:11:02One-two delivery to Alfredo Griffin and it's high. Two balls and two strikes to count.
- 3:11:09Nesci thought sure that it was a called strike three.
- 3:11:13So did Martinez as he broke for the dugout but Steve Palermo says no way and there's not much beeping going on.
- 3:11:19Two balls, two strikes to count to Alfredo.
- 3:11:24Now Dennis wants a new baseball.
- 3:11:28Alfredo is batting left handed but Corey well off the line at right field.
- 3:11:34Lumbric up to the left field side and Bernanke guards the line at left.
- 3:11:39Two-two pitch.
- 3:11:41Good looking breaking pitch but just a bit out of the Steve Palermo strike zone.
- 3:11:47So the count goes full. Three balls and two strikes with two up.
- 3:11:54Six to six game.
- 3:11:57Dennis down the hill with a three-two delivery and it's fouled off to the left side into the box seat.
- 3:12:06Not the only thing left now as far as the Kansas City Royals are concerned. It's called the George Brest beat.
- 3:12:12Will he hit 400?
- 3:12:13I'll tell you there's one fellow rooting for him to hit 400. His name is Ted Williams.
- 3:12:20Again here comes the three-two delivery to Griffin and the pitch is high and Alfredo walks.
- 3:12:28So the go ahead run of the 11th Griffin walks and here comes Ray Miller.
- 3:12:34Out the dog with Dennis Martinez.
- 3:12:38And they're going to plan strategy for Tommaso Garcia who's scored his first time.
- 3:12:43Then went down on strikes to bomber.
- 3:12:45Round about the fifth, sixth, fifth, seventh and ninth inning.
- 3:12:54I'll tell you if you want to see a club that plays a pretty good baseball this weekend come out and look at this Blue J Club.
- 3:12:59They're loose as a goose. They don't have a thing to lose.
- 3:13:03They're fired up as a result of the Steinbrenner nonsense.
- 3:13:08They've been playing some pretty good baseball lately.
- 3:13:11Who would think that after a depressing loss to the Yankees when the Yankees came back last night to score four runs to the tenth and win in the 13th.
- 3:13:18Who would think that the Blue J's would win the second game and that a pitcher by the name of Luis Leal would pitch a two-hitter against the Yankees.
- 3:13:30While Tommaso's up with Griffin at first base.
- 3:13:38Look to the runner. Here's the pitch to Griffin and it was in the dirt.
- 3:13:42Tommaso was going to go for it but held back. One ball and no strikes to the count.
- 3:13:46And Alfredo Griffin just splurged over the idea of trying to go to second until he looked down at Rick Dempsey.
- 3:13:53Dempsey with a menacing look on his face and that ball in his hand that he's cut away from for a moment said I dare you.
- 3:13:59The end of eighth at Yankee Stadium 2-1 New York over Boston.
- 3:14:06Throw to first and Griffin dives back in safely.
- 3:14:21Again the throw to first and Alfredo is back.
- 3:14:26Coming into the game tonight Alfredo Griffin at 16 stolen bases but he has been thrown out 23-9.
- 3:14:36Dennis again looks over the shoulder to Alfredo Griffin. Here's the pitch to Garcia. They pop him up to the left side.
- 3:14:41It should be no problem for Dempsey. It should be a piece of cake near the line. Makes the catch and then hits.
- 3:14:46With a Toronto Blue J's in the 11th.
- 3:14:49And at the end it's 10-1-1.5 from Memorial Stadium. The score continues Toronto 6-Potamor.
- 3:14:55Final score in from Milwaukee. The Brewers shutting out Seattle 4-0 on a five hit shutout by McQuarrie who's now 4-7.
- 3:15:04Four runs, nine hits and one error for Milwaukee and for Seattle no runs, five hits and one error.
- 3:15:12So Bob McQuarrie with that five hit shutout, four and seven. Rick Honeycutt the starter and Honeycutt the loser drops nine wins and 17 losses.
- 3:15:23As you probably heard from Tom Marr, George Brett struck out in his final time at batter the last time he was up.
- 3:15:30That was in his sixth inning as the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals are now in the top of the seventh with Kansas City with a lot of at bats for everybody leading that game 13-0.
- 3:15:40A single run in the first, five more in the third, four more in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
- 3:15:45But Brett is two for four in that game and he's now dropped to 3-99.
- 3:15:51His first time at bat he sacrificed, he singled his next two trips and then flied out and now has just struck out.
- 3:15:59Well we go now to the bottom of the 11th inning of Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and it's a six, six, five, six runs, ten hits and error.
- 3:16:06Toronto, six runs, 13 hits and error. Baltimore and Mark Quarrie is going to make his first plate appearance.
- 3:16:15Quarrie will be the leadoff hitter and following him will be Eddie Murray. Out of the mound is the true ball throwing Mike Willard who believes has shown the Orioles some absolutely stunning relief.
- 3:16:30Not only here but up in Toronto the last time we saw him. He's had an inning in the third in excellent shape.
- 3:16:36He has pitched his way out of two nasty jams here tonight in the late inning. Tom?
- 3:16:42This is the first pitch to Mark Quarrie out of the call strike. Talk about somebody who at five o'clock in batting practice can hit the ball a mile and a half at Quarrie.
- 3:16:52One strike to count to mark the next big tech swing. A little soft liner out to the first baseman to add Quarrie O'Gough.
- 3:17:05Eddie Murray now to batter. Murray lines up.
- 3:17:19Eddie Murray's up. Willis will work to Murray and it's a call strike. Eddie was out on the fly ball his first time up and then went down on the strike.
- 3:17:35He's on the fifth, walked in the seventh and grounded into a double play on the ninth. Willis has come out of a couple of jams. He's pulled a Houdini act on the Orioles tonight.
- 3:17:49Next pitch to Eddie and it's one ball and one strike to count. The on deck batter is Gary Renegi.
- 3:17:57Eddie Martinez is throwing in the Oreo bullpen. It looks like Farlo is up in the Toronto pen.
- 3:18:08Here comes the one, one pitch to Eddie from Willis and he fouls it off. One ball and two strikes to count.
- 3:18:16Like to know if Charlie Bree is registering this guy Willis on the radar gun down there. He does not have an overwhelming amount of alopony on his pitches.
- 3:18:31Six to six. Eddie could end it with one swing of the bat. Here comes the one, two pitch. Check swing ground ball foul.
- 3:18:47Willis has the batters kind of lunging with that off speed stuff that he brings up there. Quite a few check swings. Corey the first batter. Check swing soft liner out to the first baseman upshot.
- 3:19:01John Mayberry was thrown out of this game after complaining to Palermo with a one, one count upshot came in and popped up. And he's now the first baseman.
- 3:19:13He's now taking his time. One ball and two strikes to count with one out to nobody on. Willis is ready to work. Here comes the one, two delivery fastball on the ground.
- 3:19:23He's in the center field for an Eddie Murray base hit. An Eddie Murray single to center field. Eddie's second hit on the night. That will bring up Gary Rennick. There's one out and the birds trying to put this game on ice.
- 3:19:43The Red Sox have given it up again. This time in a close contest at Yankee Stadium. Two to one thick cream. Franco the loser, Tia the winner. And for the Goose Cottage chalk up save number 29.
- 3:19:59Yankees win it two to one. All the more importantly Orioles win. Here's the pitch to Rennick and it's a ball. One ball and no strikes to count. Danny Aiello is the on deck batter. Rennick came into the game of the fifth inning and was hit by a pitch.
- 3:20:15Next pitch Gary, ground ball. Down to Howard the third. Throw to second for one. Back to Fred and it's in time for the double play. Five four three double play. And at the end of 11 innings the score is Toronto six Baltimore six.
- 3:20:31On the scoreboard Cleveland and Detroit are now on the top of the ninth at Detroit. Oshinko and Monge for Cleveland. Shraksheter and Lopez for Detroit. And the Tigers lead four to three. Brookens hit his eighth home run of the season for Detroit with one on in the fourth.
- 3:20:47The line score for the Yankee Boston game two run seven hits no errors for New York. One run eight hits no errors for Boston. Franco Bergmeyer and Stanley for Boston. Theon and Gossage for New York. Theon the winner seven and nine. 29 save of the season for Gossage.
- 3:21:03Franco the loser he's nine and eight. Brown hit his 12th home run for the Yankees with none on in the seventh. Milwaukee four nothing over Seattle. Four nine and one for Milwaukee. No runs five hits in an error for Seattle. Honeycutt and McClure both went the distance. McClure the winner four and seven. Honeycutt the loser nine and 17.
- 3:21:22California and Texas are now in the bottom of the ninth at Arlington and California leads six to two. Tenana for California. Matmac and Llewelyn for Texas. Oakland and Kansas City are in the bottom of the seventh in Kansas City. The Royals lead 13 to nothing.
- 3:21:38Kingman Beard Jones and Hamilton for Oakland. Swithorne for Kansas City. George Brett is two for four. His batting average right now is at three ninety nine. Right now this pause for station identification. This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 3:22:00Well Dennis Martinez is out of the game. He came in a relief with Jim Palmer. Goes seven and two thirds innings. Giving up two runs. Hope on home runs. Debron and Hudson. Dennis gives up four hits. Striking out three and walking three.
- 3:22:15Tippi Martinez now comes into the game and hold on to your rocking chairs because this is far from over. Tippi's record is two and three. His ERA is two point three point two seven. He fits a total of seventy one and two thirds innings. Has ten saves to his record.
- 3:22:34He has walked thirty two while striking out sixty and he's given up the whole run. Five times. Y'all push and Nelson Paul Mirabella. Had a very good relief outing for the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. Let's go to the scoreboard now.
- 3:22:50The Yankees win again. Beating Boston two to one. Beating the Boston Red Sox with a fifth straight time. In Detroit the Tigers lead Cleveland at the end of eight four and three. In Milwaukee tonight the Brewers shut out Seattle four to nothing. In Texas in the bottom of the ninth.
- 3:23:06In California you lead Texas six to two. Kansas City coming open thirteen to nothing. Chicago and Minnesota seven and a half complete. Chicago leads at three two. Now here's the shot. Thank you Tom. Here we go. The top of the 12th inning.
- 3:23:21Left handed swinging Roy Howell leading off against Baltimore's Tippi Martinez. Look out here's a ball right up under the chin of Roy Howell. He kind of was riding in right over the top of the plate. Tippi's first offering kind of took off and ran up and in it.
- 3:23:38Roy Howell and he seems to be OK. The place to be when you get a pitch like that is someplace else. Roy got there as quickly as he could. Ball one. Howell tonight has one hit in five trips.
- 3:23:53He's got a single to center field back in the fifth inning. We're waiting for Roy to get everything back together again. He's perfectly all right and now we're ready to go. Now the one other pitch is a swing and a ground ball to the second baseman.
- 3:24:11He makes a pick up a throw and Howell is the first out of his welcome. Now the Yankees have won it over the Red Sox and they are using a formula that Earl Weaver designed last year here in Baltimore.
- 3:24:29The Yankees tonight call upon that deep depth. They got the home run from Bobby Brown tonight. Win it two to one over the Red Sox. Here now is Willie Upshaw and a strike just called and a check swing.
- 3:24:43Upshaw started trying to stop it. Apparently he did not get it done. One strike is rung up by Palermo who threw Mayberry out of the ball game back on the tenth inning when Mayberry beat Filbert called strike. Now a ball is outside to Willie Upshaw.
- 3:25:03One ball one strike down Upshaw. It has only played appearance. He popped to the third baseman. Swing and a miss to the curve ball. There are some nights when Tiffy will bring one of the dark on the curve balls from the league to the mound.
- 3:25:21And he's kind of sneaky quick. Now the motion for the one two offering. It's outside. Two balls two strikes. The Orioles know that the Yankees have won. They know what they have to do.
- 3:25:35Now they split four games against Toronto in Toronto. The Blue Jays are hammering away. Swing and a miss. Upshaw goes down. Strikeout number one for Tiffy. The second out of the top of the twelfth of the batter now is going to be Steve Vaughn.
- 3:25:52This left handed plowder tied the ball game. They'll actually put the Blue Jays in front six to five with a two out solo home run of the tenth inning. The Orioles have come back with a run of their own thanks to a Toronto area in the bottom of the tenth inning to stay alive.
- 3:26:17Martinez and his first offering to Vaughn is outside low and a ball. One ball no strike.
- 3:26:27As I mentioned earlier tonight the Blue Jays have been a lot better than the Orioles. An extra inning ball game. Strike is called to Vaughn. The Orioles an extra inning. They've won four and lost six. Toronto an extra inning. They've won nine and lost six. The one one pitch.
- 3:26:47A ball and two strikes now to Steve.
- 3:27:00Now the one two offering.
- 3:27:04Two balls two strikes.
- 3:27:20And the count will fill three and two. With two out nobody on in the top of the twelfth of the sixth sixth tie.
- 3:27:31Renike the Oriole left fielder. A bit toward the gap and left center field is bumpery against Steve Vaughn. Down comes the three two. Ground ball hit right at the second base from Ticano. He has.
- 3:27:41The end of the 11 and a half. Toronto six Baltimore six.
- 3:27:50A play by Vitter and Ben Ogilvie drove in two runs with a double and a single. We give the Milwaukee Brewers a four nothing victory over Seattle. McClure making his fourth start after two hundred twelve relief appearances allowed just four singles in one walk to improve his record to three and one as a starter. He's four and seven overall. Ogilvie doubled home Milwaukee's final run in a three run third inning and single in the Brewers final run of the game in the fifth.
- 3:28:15with their first two runs and the third on run scoring singles by Robin Yauts and Gorman Thomas.
- 3:28:22Bobby Brown hit his 12th home run of the season, deleted off the 7th inning, snapping a 1-1 tie,
- 3:28:27and giving the New York Yankees a 2-1 victory over Boston.
- 3:28:30Brown's homer came off Steve Ranko and made a winner of Louis Teon for the first time since June 20th.
- 3:28:36Teon went 7 innings and gave up 5 hits. He walked one and struck out 4.
- 3:28:41Rich Gossage fits the last two innings to earn his 20-nock save and stretches string of scoreless relief appearances to 17 games.
- 3:28:55Let's update you on the national...
- 3:28:58Chuck just came up with a great mind.
- 3:29:00The Chicago Cubs in the National League over Philadelphia 4-3, Pittsburgh over New York 4-3,
- 3:29:06Montreal and St. Louis at the bottom of the eighth inning assault tie with a 7-repeat.
- 3:29:11And by the end of San Diego, at the end of three, San Diego leads it 2-1.
- 3:29:15This is actually the Los Angeles 1-0 in the first inning.
- 3:29:19Houston is there to score in their first inning against San Francisco.
- 3:29:22Benny will lead it off. We'll go back to Chuck.
- 3:29:25It'll be Benny Ayala here in this last half of the 12th inning.
- 3:29:29Ayala tonight has fanned, lined to second and popped to short and Mike Willis went in the ballgame of the ninth inning.
- 3:29:36Just in to furb, has a tough bin for an error, charged the shortstop grippin.
- 3:29:41That thing would have been over. Now here's a fall too high to Benny Ayala.
- 3:29:46He'll wait for the fastball for the both part where Willis throw it out of the strike zone.
- 3:29:51His threat butterfist is the screwball.
- 3:29:54He went down to learn that screwball and down to the minor leagues and he apparently has a very, very good screw.
- 3:30:02Now the 1-0 pitch. Here's the strike of Benny to Ayala. One ball, one strike.
- 3:30:09Like a hard breaking ball from Mike Willis. Now the 1-1 pitch for the waiting Ayala.
- 3:30:16Here's the screw. He hit in the dirt off the third base side.
- 3:30:19The foul ball. Strike two. One ball, two strikes.
- 3:30:32Rick Dempsey is due right behind Ayala and then behind Dempsey is the big play.
- 3:30:39The 1-2 pitch outside for a ball. Two and two.
- 3:30:43Last half of the 12th inning, Oriole Stadium in Baltimore.
- 3:30:50Willis works to Ayala. Ground ball sharply hit his foul outside the bag at third.
- 3:31:06Willis is allowed only two Orioles, three Orioles.
- 3:31:10One by Dempsey, another by Lee May and one by Eddie Murray.
- 3:31:20Game into the ball game with Renike. First and second nobody out in the ninth inning.
- 3:31:23They've got Eddie Murray. They hit into a double play.
- 3:31:25And Renike in a fly ball to center. Here's the swing and a foul out of play behind the play.
- 3:31:33With one out of the tenth inning and Toronto leading six to five.
- 3:31:37Dempsey single to left field.
- 3:31:39Desense hit what looks like it was going to be a double playground ball to the left side of the shortstop.
- 3:31:44Griffin got there. It count off the glove and off the shoulder and rolled out to the right center field.
- 3:31:49Dempsey raced to third. And Desense raced Lee May with the pinch hitter.
- 3:31:53And he hit a ground double over the bag at third.
- 3:31:55Here's a high fly ball fairly deep in left field. Back to left fielder.
- 3:32:00Near the warning track and Hodgson is there to make the catch.
- 3:32:04And he retires. Denny Iowd.
- 3:32:09Great sight that is in the ball park.
- 3:32:11That's the ball left the bat.
- 3:32:13You can just see the crowd getting up on their feet and trying to push and help the ball out of the ball park.
- 3:32:21Mike Willis one victory without a loss.
- 3:32:24That's returning to the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 3:32:27And now here is Rick Dempsey.
- 3:32:29He's pitched 19 in the third inning.
- 3:32:31So that's giving up one home run.
- 3:32:33Here's a ball one down low to Rick.
- 3:32:36He kind of squared on the pitch and gave an indication of a button.
- 3:32:39Took it all away.
- 3:32:48And a one nothing pitch.
- 3:32:50It's a strike over the outside corner of the letters.
- 3:32:52One ball, one strike to Dempsey.
- 3:32:54One out, nobody on.
- 3:32:55Bottom of the 12th tied 6-6.
- 3:33:06So what a pitch to Dempsey.
- 3:33:08It's a little over by two balls to the strike.
- 3:33:12Two one's pitch on the way to Dempsey.
- 3:33:16A nine foul.
- 3:33:18That's a good sign.
- 3:33:20It's out of play.
- 3:33:22These stones will be gunning for victory number 24 tomorrow night in this ball yard.
- 3:33:26730 is game time.
- 3:33:28We hope a lot of you who were unable to be here tonight to see this win between the Orioles and the Blue Jays might be able to make it tomorrow night.
- 3:33:35If not, we'll see you tomorrow night.
- 3:33:38Mike Flanagan would love to see you here on Sunday afternoon, which is going to be man appreciation day.
- 3:33:44There's going to be a lot of really great gifts given away in a drawing right after the ballgame on Sunday.
- 3:33:51Now the 22-50.
- 3:33:56A point and a foul.
- 3:33:59Pretty soon we ought to be getting a little information about those West Coast games in the National League.
- 3:34:12Houston is San Francisco and Cincinnati is in Los Angeles.
- 3:34:19They've got a very important ballgame tonight in that other league.
- 3:34:23Now the 22-50.
- 3:34:25Rocks over the rubber.
- 3:34:29The lefty sits.
- 3:34:31It's high and away.
- 3:34:32Ball free.
- 3:34:33Well, the Reds have taken a 1-0 lead over the Dodgers after the first inning of play.
- 3:34:38And Houston did not score at the top of the first inning.
- 3:34:43Montreal and the Cardinals, 7-7 tie going to the ninth inning.
- 3:34:49Thank you, Tom.
- 3:34:503-2 pitch to Nesbitt, a high foul ball down from the field side and out of play.
- 3:35:05The Orioles have out hit the Blue Jays tonight, 14-10.
- 3:35:09And a 6-6 tie on the scoreboard.
- 3:35:12There have been three home runs to the ballgame, two solo home runs.
- 3:35:17The first home run is by Paul Hodgson of the Jays, another by Steve Long.
- 3:35:22The 3-2 to Dempsey, a ground ball base hit in the hole and on through to left field.
- 3:35:27Now Dempsey had a base hit to left field the last time he looked at the lefty, Mike Willis.
- 3:35:32Matter of fact, almost the very same spot.
- 3:35:35And now the batter will be Doug DeSensei.
- 3:35:39In the tenth inning with Dempsey at first and one out.
- 3:35:43DeSensei hit a ground ball a bit to the left side of Griffin.
- 3:35:46It could be a double play, but Griffin did not come up with it.
- 3:35:49It tared off his shoulder out of the right center.
- 3:35:52And that was all the opportunity the Orioles needed to get off the deck and tie the game.
- 3:36:02A crowd of 12,706 this evening in Baltimore, and most of them are still here.
- 3:36:07Here's a ball high and outside to Doug DeSensei.
- 3:36:13Doug has one hit tonight and five trips.
- 3:36:17Willis works again.
- 3:36:18Here's a long drive, but it's hooking.
- 3:36:20It may be a foul ball, and it is down on the upper deck of the left field corner.
- 3:36:25Boy, DeSensei really jumped on her.
- 3:36:28He got his pitch and he just overpowered it.
- 3:36:31Pulled his foul down the left field side into the upper deck.
- 3:36:34And Doug is walking around, talking to himself a little bit right now.
- 3:36:38That apparently was the kind of a pitch that DeSensei was hoping for, and he just was out in front of it too much.
- 3:36:47They've got 6'6 Mike Barlow throwing out of the Toronto bullpen right now,
- 3:36:53but Willis has been all the Orioles can handle, believe me.
- 3:36:56Now the set by Mike on the 1-1 to DeSensei.
- 3:36:59Fly ball well hit down in the right field corner, chasing over the right fielder.
- 3:37:03He can't get it.
- 3:37:04Home run! Home run to DeSensei!
- 3:37:08It's just gone into the first row of the seat.
- 3:37:11And just like that, the ball game is over.
- 3:37:15Dempsey scores the seventh run, and here comes DeSensei with run number eight.
- 3:37:21He fouled one just a moment ago to left field,
- 3:37:25and now hit a line drive into the corner in right that went into the front row of the seat.
- 3:37:31For DeSensei, 13th home run, and a come from behind 8-6 win for the Orioles.
- 3:37:39Well, that's it.
- 3:37:40The Orioles win at 8-6.
- 3:37:41We'll be back with a recap for you right after this message.
