- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
- 0:02Speaker 1: Show on Mike Cristino off that Michigan State a game
- 0:05Speaker 1: Huskies won by seven, probably could have won by fifteen.
- 0:08Speaker 1: They played well and spurts the game disrupted by too
- 0:12Speaker 1: many fouls. But Dan, that's something last year they got.
- 0:16Speaker 1: You gone in trouble at times, too many fouls, the
- 0:19Speaker 1: opposition getting on the line way too much. Uh, how
- 0:22Speaker 1: are you going to fix that as you go forward
- 0:24Speaker 1: here in this season?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we're not good at getting fouled, and
- 0:30Speaker 2: we're bad at that fouling. So I mean I would
- 0:36Speaker 2: say this, you know, for us, the problem last year was,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you know, we we we we did such a terrible
- 0:43Speaker 2: job of getting fouled and we didn't steal the ball.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You know.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So like if we're going to play the ball hard,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you know, we're going to make people uncomfortable, and we're
- 0:52Speaker 2: going to pressure and we're going to chase people off
- 0:54Speaker 2: the three point line, and when we're going to be
- 0:56Speaker 2: physical and we're going to straight passing lanes and we're
- 0:59Speaker 2: going to get after people and make them uncomfortable, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 2: just to mitigate the.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You know, the amount of times we're going to put
- 1:06Speaker 3: them at the line.
- 1:07Speaker 2: We've got to steal the ball more, you know, and
- 1:11Speaker 2: have a better defense that creates quicker bad shots that
- 1:15Speaker 2: gets us out in transition, you know, like the fouling
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know the other night. You know, some of it
- 1:22Speaker 2: was just poor technique, poor discipline. Some of it was
- 1:26Speaker 2: us coaches this time of year valuing more guys getting
- 1:31Speaker 2: after each other physically and playing hard in practice over
- 1:35Speaker 2: you know, hey, guys, get your hands off each other.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You know, we're at that point now.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think we uh, you know, first you're trying to
- 1:42Speaker 2: get you guys to be physical.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Play hard, you know.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Uh, and then now we could hopefully clean up some
- 1:48Speaker 2: of the lack of discipline fouls or bad technique fouls
- 1:53Speaker 2: by not being in a stance, bad hand placement, bad awareness, laziness.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it looked like Melachi Smith and Silas memory that
- 2:04Speaker 1: you're two transfer guards can put pressure on the ball
- 2:07Speaker 1: in the perimeter. Again, we've seen them twice in a game.
- 2:10Speaker 1: What's your take on You've been watching these guys now
- 2:13Speaker 1: for a few months. Is that something that you kind
- 2:16Speaker 1: of be able to do? Do you think as you
- 2:17Speaker 1: face this tough early schedule.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I mean they're better.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, you know, that's a it's a critical position, uh,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you know for any team. And uh, I would say
- 2:28Speaker 2: these guard spots in general, you know, like across the board.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I mean you're talking about you know, the guards that
- 2:34Speaker 2: we've had that were you know, two way players and
- 2:37Speaker 2: could also like pass the ball and and make plays
- 2:41Speaker 2: for others. And it's a you know, Tristan Newton and
- 2:44Speaker 2: Cam Spencer, uh, you know, and and and and Stefan Castle.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, you know, like the reason why we've been
- 2:52Speaker 2: successful is you know, we've had guys that could guard
- 2:56Speaker 2: and also like make plays at the offensive end, not
- 2:59Speaker 2: just for them. So you know, we did not you
- 3:03Speaker 2: know with the guard play at both ends of the court.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Versus Michigan State was uh, you know, was subpar. I
- 3:09Speaker 2: mean I thought that, you know, and again it's early,
- 3:13Speaker 2: the team's going to get better, but coming out of
- 3:16Speaker 2: a game, I was, you know, really the only guy
- 3:19Speaker 2: that you felt great about the way they played was
- 3:22Speaker 2: Jade Ross.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to get to him in the second.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Quick thought though on when you had Tristan Newton, I
- 3:30Speaker 1: recall his first half a year maybe longer. He was
- 3:33Speaker 1: trying to figure out what you wanted, and you were
- 3:35Speaker 1: trying to get him to do what you needed and
- 3:37Speaker 1: and all that stuff, and he and he got better,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and he got better, and then in tournament time he
- 3:42Speaker 1: was tremendous and then the next year. Uh, is it
- 3:45Speaker 1: difficult for a guy like Silas Demriy coming from Georgia
- 3:49Speaker 1: to get to where you need him to be, you
- 3:52Speaker 1: know immediately?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Is that going to be a process? Yeah, I mean
- 3:56Speaker 3: it is.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know, I think you know, Silas playing to his identity,
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, starting at the defensive end and setting a
- 4:06Speaker 2: tone defensively without fouling, you know, and then and then
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, obviously he's shown he's got an ability to
- 4:15Speaker 2: you know, to shoot the ball, but you know, we
- 4:17Speaker 2: need him to be a guy that's in the paint, uh,
- 4:21Speaker 2: you know, getting to the free throw line, finishing at
- 4:23Speaker 2: the rim, you know, or or or or spraying the
- 4:27Speaker 2: ball to his shooters, and and eventually when when when
- 4:30Speaker 2: he gets when Taris is back, you know, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: his centers that can really finish. So you know, he's uh,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, he's got the attributes to do it, but
- 4:42Speaker 2: it's a hard thing to do, you know, like it's
- 4:44Speaker 2: hard to play as well as Tristan play. Once he
- 4:47Speaker 2: really understood, you know, like how you need to prepare,
- 4:53Speaker 2: like your your your his feel for our offense, his
- 4:57Speaker 2: his understanding of like his ability to re on the ball,
- 5:01Speaker 2: like and you know, it's hard to get there. It's
- 5:06Speaker 2: a process.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, right, exactly.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You mentioned Jaden Ross last year thirty three games, eleven
- 5:12Speaker 1: minutes a game, a little over forty percent from the
- 5:15Speaker 1: field his career. I was fourteen against New Hampshire at
- 5:18Speaker 1: eleven the other night, and he looked more like a
- 5:20Speaker 1: guy that could impact the game when he's in the game.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I mean, isn't that what you're trying to get from him?
- 5:27Speaker 3: He had thirteen or eleven? Well, I don't know. I
- 5:30Speaker 3: look again. I think it was eleventh, but I could
- 5:32Speaker 3: be wrong. I hope I think it was thirteen. I
- 5:35Speaker 3: hope it was thirteen. I thought it was thirteen. You're right, listen.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So what I said about him is like different, a
- 5:43Speaker 2: chance to be a real difference maker. He's exactly what
- 5:47Speaker 2: you're looking for in basketball in terms of positionless guard,
- 5:52Speaker 2: multiple positions. He's got to you know, he shoots the ball,
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's clean. You know, he's bouncy, plays with a lot
- 5:59Speaker 2: of energy. It's just it's all belief. You know, it's
- 6:03Speaker 2: all just taking you know what that that that evening.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You know, we see that a lot here behind closed doors. Uh,
- 6:13Speaker 2: on a daily basis, we see that a lot. We
- 6:16Speaker 2: see that a lot plus that h plus some. So
- 6:20Speaker 2: you know, I think that was a big step for him.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I think it will be a big step. Is just
- 6:24Speaker 2: you know, the coaches, the team that you know, continuing,
- 6:27Speaker 2: the fans just supporting, like this guy is one of
- 6:32Speaker 2: the few guys that we have on our roster that
- 6:35Speaker 2: that that's got some real special abilities to impact the
- 6:39Speaker 2: game at that size, that athletic ability, defensive potential, threes,
- 6:45Speaker 2: getting to the rim, being able to finish athleticism. I mean,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and he's a great guy, and he's a Yukon guy.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean that was a big step for
- 6:52Speaker 2: him to do it against Michigan State, Uh, like a
- 6:56Speaker 2: real opponent and a real physical team.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Fine.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Note here I was talking about those five freshmen. We'll
- 7:02Speaker 1: be talking about them as a season unfolds. But in
- 7:05Speaker 1: ninety one ninety two, Jim Calhoun had seven freshmen on
- 7:08Speaker 1: his roster. Don Marshall Donnie Marshall, Brian Fair three guys
- 7:13Speaker 1: ended up being a thousand points scores for you Khon.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So you know, well, you know the world isn't the
- 7:19Speaker 1: same anymore. But you know what I mean, Freshmen start
- 7:22Speaker 1: developing and become huge parts of what you're doing.
- 7:25Speaker 2: They do and it's the best part of it. You
- 7:28Speaker 2: know that there's a lot of parts of it that
- 7:30Speaker 2: have become transactional, but and that's just part of it.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You got to adapt. But the fun part is like
- 7:38Speaker 2: recruiting a big Eric or Furfey or solo ball and
- 7:42Speaker 2: then you're part of this like three year process. Alex
- 7:45Speaker 2: Caraban like homegrown boys.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yep, and they've been a lot of success with those
- 7:50Speaker 1: homegrown guys. Coach, thanks so much, New Haven Monday.
- 7:54Speaker 3: We'll see you at Gamble Pavilion. Let's do it. See
- 7:57Speaker 3: you then, all right?
- 7:58Speaker 1: As Dan Hurley back and more, the Yukon men's basketball
