- 0:01When in doubt, overload. There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #12123 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:13Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Isabella Rose Smith. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:20You may think saying it once should be enough, but upgraded
- 0:23thinking knows you have to overload the aim to change the
- 0:26story. Here's the story back in message
- 0:30893. I told you about 1 of Admiral
- 0:33William Mcraven's military sayings.
- 0:35When in doubt, overload. When Navy Seals were blowing up
- 0:38underwater obstacles and weren't sure how much explosive to use,
- 0:42they were taught to use more, always put more energy, more
- 0:46focus, more power into the situation than seemed necessary.
- 0:51Toby Lutke is the founder and CEO of Shopify.
- 0:55He says he used to be terrified of public speaking.
- 0:57It's a common fear. Jerry Seinfeld jokes about
- 1:00funerals and choosing between being the person in the casket
- 1:02and the person at the podium. Most people would rather be in
- 1:05the casket. So Toby tried something.
- 1:08For about a week, he spent roughly 10 minutes a day
- 1:11writing. I like public speaking.
- 1:13I love public speaking over and over.
- 1:16A week later, he says he loved it.
- 1:19Toby says it's not a placebo. He says repeating writing
- 1:23changes your brain, and when your brain goes to work matching
- 1:27your behavior to your new identity.
- 1:30He also says it works best when you know what you're doing.
- 1:33You go in on purpose. He doesn't stop there.
- 1:36He writes message in a bottle notes to himself, which are
- 1:39scheduled messages to his future self.
- 1:42After his annual keynote, he writes down what worked and what
- 1:46didn't. So next year he starts ahead.
- 1:48It's spaced repetition on the ideas he wants to keep.
- 1:52He even says society creates rituals because rituals are
- 1:55largely affirmations on repeat. Henry Ford is credited with
- 2:00saying whether you think you can or think you can't, you're
- 2:04right. What are you telling yourself to
- 2:07think? Overloading is the principle
- 2:10these daily messages are built on.
- 2:13It's the principle my book is built on.
- 2:15Repetition is persuasive, and the person you need to persuade
- 2:20the most is you. You don't change a story by
- 2:24mentioning it once. You overload it.
- 2:28When you're trying to design a change in your life, overload
- 2:31the aim. Write it over and over.
- 2:34Read books about it, listen to instruction on it.
- 2:37Record voice memos of yourself telling you what you need to do,
- 2:41and play them back. When charge might clear, the
- 2:45obstacle might the seals. Don't bet on might though,
- 2:50neither should you. If you really want to change,
- 2:53try overloading. The better story to tell
- 2:56yourself is when in doubt, I overload.
- 3:00Tell me a story of something you've overloaded to from
- 3:03chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 3:07what's one thing you tell yourself every day if you knew
- 3:10it would stick. You can get a free copy of my
