- 0:25afternoon with us. Coming up at 2O clock off the
- 0:28bench. Lucas and Sean will be here.
- 0:30But in the meantime, we've got a lot to get to, including in 15
- 0:33minutes. Mike Palm is going to join us.
- 0:35Circus Sports had hoped to be able to unveil their new app in
- 0:38the state of Iowa today. They want to make sure it's
- 0:41ready to go and there'll be no hiccups along the way.
- 0:45So they're going to postpone it by a few days.
- 0:47But we'll get the latest from Mike Palm on that.
- 0:49And while we've got him, there's nothing, no reason why we
- 0:52couldn't pick his brain on what happened this past weekend.
- 0:54And maybe a little bit of MLB playoffs.
- 0:56And then Vinnie Iyer at the bottom of the hour, he covers
- 0:58the NFL for the Sporting News, sportingnews.com.
- 1:03He also hosts Locked On fantasy football podcasts on the Locked
- 1:07On Network. So Vinny will be here at 12:30.
- 1:09Matt Snyder covers baseball for CBSSports.com.
- 1:13He kicks off our number 2. We'll do our weekly segment, MLB
- 1:17segment with Matt Snyder. And then at 1:30, well, more
- 1:22Sporting News personnel the in the Bill Bender will join us
- 1:27from Sporting News covers college football and then
- 1:30Trent's plays of the day circus sports sponsor those.
- 1:33So Week 4 is come and gone. Curtain fell on the on Monday
- 1:36Night Football last night. 2 brutal games, quite honestly.
- 1:39I mean, they really were. They're just just terrible
- 1:42games. But football is football after
- 1:45all, and you can clean something of it.
- 1:47I love to watch Bo Nicks throw the football.
- 1:50I love to watch Justin Fields run the football as that
- 1:53touchdown was a thing of beauty. But there's not much going on
- 1:56with that Jets team. The Dolphins are.
- 1:57They're terrible and they found a way to get by them.
- 2:00So off the baseball we go. Boy, baseball got some huge news
- 2:03yesterday with the the 2025 numbers.
- 2:07I'm not sure. Did you see the viewership and
- 2:08attendance numbers? I saw that they were up.
- 2:10Oh, up. I mean way up.
- 2:14Fox was up 9%, FS 110%, ESPN 21%, TBS 29%, MLB Network 13% up
- 2:22NHK what is that NHK whatever it is, it was up 20% and MLBTV was
- 2:29up 34%. Attendance for the third
- 2:32straight year continued to grow. 71.4 million fans bellied their
- 2:37way through the turnstiles into Major League ballparks this
- 2:40year. So for the tough day yesterday,
- 2:43for the game is dying crowd, the game seemingly is alive and
- 2:46well. They could figure out the TV's
- 2:48and the blackout restrictions. Who knows where this rocket ship
- 2:51would take off to. But a good day for baseball.
- 2:54And boy, we've got a good day for baseball coming up here
- 2:56today. Yeah, it's a series that are all
- 2:59intriguing in their own way, of course.
- 3:00The red story, getting in the back door even with the loss and
- 3:03what the Marlins did to the Mets over the weekend.
- 3:05Do you? Give the Reds any chance.
- 3:07Yeah, I mean to. Win a game, can they?
- 3:10They can't win the series, can they?
- 3:11It's only a three. Game series.
- 3:12Why can't they? It's baseball.
- 3:13Yeah, but it's the Dodgers in the other dugout.
- 3:16Sure. And I like hunter green a lot.
- 3:18I mean, Hunter green is unbelievable, but it's the
- 3:23Dodgers in the dugout. But no shot.
- 3:26I mean, it's baseball. You can't say no shot.
- 3:28It would be an it would be a huge surprise if Cincinnati gets
- 3:32through this series. Yeah, I I'd like.
- 3:33No, I wouldn't. I mean, OK, this is what taints.
- 3:37I don't like this about me. You know I want the Dodgers to
- 3:40win because of my Betty app, right?
- 3:43I would like to see Cincinnati pull off this story, but I don't
- 3:48think they will. I don't think so either, but the
- 3:51price says that they're -200 the Dodgers to win the series.
- 3:53But three-game series, anything can happen.
- 3:55You know the interesting thing, we've had twelve of these NOW
- 3:57series as they've manufactured it, and yesterday we could have
- 4:01had an epic Game one. 16 I know. Can we bring this back?
- 4:04No, sadly, we can. Why?
- 4:05I don't know. I'm not.
- 4:07I'm with. You are are planes.
- 4:09Do they shut down? If you put it no, you can still
- 4:12get there these. These cities that have Major
- 4:15League franchises, their airports open, then it's not
- 4:18like it closes up, right? Right.
- 4:19They can land the plane at 2:00 in the morning and ask the
- 4:22personnel there to get everybody off the plane.
- 4:24I mean to think if we would have got Mets Reds game 163 winner
- 4:29out. Yeah, no, sign me up.
- 4:31We had the Blue Jay-Z. To to play for what they were
- 4:34playing. Don't go too far there.
- 4:36Well, why not? Well, you play as a head.
- 4:38Fan so I don't. Want that?
- 4:41You played head for, head for. Years.
- 4:42If it would have been the Yankees who would have got the
- 4:44one seed, then I agree with. You absolutely take your fandom
- 4:47away though. We did this for years and years
- 4:50and years. And to think that then The Game
- 4:52163, the importance of that with a bi attached to it, what that
- 4:56that would have been incredible as baseball fans were robbed of
- 4:59it. We'll just go to the the season
- 5:02series. Do you remember one pitch of
- 5:05Reds Mets this year? Because I sure don't.
- 5:07No, exactly I don't. Yet that's what determines who
- 5:10gets in the playoffs and who's sitting.
- 5:12Bring it back. Bring back Game 160.
- 5:14Three. Yeah, not good.
- 5:15Probably not going to happen. Getting back to my original
- 5:18point as these three-game series only two times in 12 of these
- 5:21series. Has it gone 3?
- 5:23Have we seen the three games? Isn't that wild?
- 5:25I was. I'm glad you found that number
- 5:26because I was thinking that, boy, we don't see this a lot.
- 5:29Here's the Reds, a first time in Major League history to have a
- 5:32team that no qualifying batter hit above 270, no qualified
- 5:37batter hit 25 home runs, no pitcher 115 games.
- 5:40No pitcher was able to strike out more than 200 batters.
- 5:44And here the Reds are getting their way into the playoffs and
- 5:48we'll see where it goes. You know, Speaking of baseball,
- 5:50I'm, I'm not sure I want to bring this up with Matt Snyder.
- 5:53Maybe I do. And I know you probably didn't
- 5:55see this. You'll probably be aware of it.
- 5:57And I wasn't aware of it until I went back and watched because
- 5:59Saturday we were watching college football.
- 6:01Did you see what the Cardinals did to Michael Bush on Saturday?
- 6:05Threw at him? No.
- 6:06No, actually walked him. OK, so he had a home run, a
- 6:11double and a triple. He was a single away, single
- 6:15away from the cycle. And they walked them on purpose.
- 6:21If I was a Cardinal fan, I would love it if I'm a fan of baseball
- 6:26or a fan of any other team. And certainly a Cubs fan.
- 6:30I mean, I'd say it was the Padres and the Brewers.
- 6:35I just think that's, I don't know, Again, if I was a Cardinal
- 6:39fan, I think I'd probably love it.
- 6:40Right? Yeah, you get that part of it.
- 6:42But I thought that was a little bushly.
- 6:44I'm with you. Right.
- 6:45Didn't love it. Didn't love it.
- 6:46No, not at all. I mean, it's it's it's a cycle
- 6:49and hopefully we'll get another chance to do it.
- 6:50But, and there's no guarantee, obviously he's going to get a
- 6:53single right, but I never had that opportunity to do so.
- 6:56So I have the records here for the playoff teams against other
- 7:00playoff teams, along with the run differential.
- 7:03And this has been a pretty good determining factor if you're
- 7:05trying to figure out who's real, who can actually make a run year
- 7:08after year after year. At the top of the list is the
- 7:11Phillies. They're 31 and 20 against
- 7:13playoff teams, plus 32 run differential.
- 7:16Up next, the Brewers, 36 and 26. The Blue Jays top the American
- 7:20League list 38 and 28 + 31. The Dodgers are 32 and 24, but
- 7:26they have the largest run differential plus 45 for them.
- 7:29And then after that, though the Reds do have a winning record,
- 7:3333 and 32, they're -16 normally not good.
- 7:37The Cubs are +2, but do have a losing record, 31 and 32, just
- 7:41under 500. But the one that I thought maybe
- 7:44would, well, two of them that bear mentioning and certainly
- 7:47bear mentioning for you, because the Padres are always a team
- 7:50that we seem to talk about one way or the other before the
- 7:53season, middle season and the season playoff.
- 7:54Can they make a run? 24 and 3410 games under 500
- 7:59against playoff teams, but more importantly, they have the worst
- 8:02run differential in National League teams -47 that's
- 8:06substantial. Who do you like in that series?
- 8:09The Cubs. You do.
- 8:10I do, yeah. I think you're too close to it.
- 8:13No, I think Matthew Boyd has not been great down the stretch and
- 8:17that and that's worrisome. Pavetta has not been good in
- 8:21Wrigley Field in his career. He has struggled in this
- 8:23environment. The record has been poor.
- 8:25That is 1 aspect that I look at. Padres lineup is good, no doubt
- 8:29about it. They also had some banked up
- 8:32pieces that bullpen. I think that is concerning for
- 8:34them. I like the Cubs bullpen more in
- 8:36the current iteration that I do the Padres and and it's just a
- 8:40staff for the Padres. Pavetta.
- 8:42King, cease. Cease.
- 8:45That's of. Course, that's a whole lot of
- 8:47yuck, No, Certainly the guys that we've seen this year.
- 8:49Well, look, it would it would be fine if the Cubs advance.
- 8:52It'd be great for business. The longer this team goes, the
- 8:54better it gets. But we'll see.
- 8:56I mean, and they would get the Brewers, the Brewers, the
- 9:01Phillies won the National League.
- 9:03No, this is the 450. The Three Six would play the. 2
- 9:08Which is the Phillies? Yep.
- 9:10OK. So the Brewers are awaiting the
- 9:12winner of this. Here's another aspect of the
- 9:14playoff set. I don't know if I have it right.
- 9:16I don't know why. It does bother me a little bit
- 9:20that we do have a true bracket that we don't have.
- 9:24The top seed gets the lowest remaining seed in the next
- 9:27round. I don't know the reasoning
- 9:29behind it or the justification of why.
- 9:31Probably the same reason they don't play 163 games.
- 9:33That's what they agreed to. I I don't know.
- 9:35Yeah, yeah, I know. I get your point.
- 9:37But that's what the NFL does. Obviously.
- 9:39Lowest top seed gets the lowest remaining seed.
- 9:41And in baseball, you don't have to have a bracket.
- 9:44There's nothing that says, oh, yeah, this makes this isn't the
- 9:47NCAA tournament, right? Where obviously that makes a
- 9:49whole lot more sense. The College Football Playoff.
- 9:51Yeah, you want a bracket there for baseball in this shortened
- 9:54kind of environment that we're in.
- 9:56I personally think it would make more sense if anybody has a
- 9:58reason, because I don't see it. We play 162.
- 10:02We talked about 162. Well, shouldn't you be rewarded
- 10:05then with the lowest team that makes it on into the next round?
- 10:09I want to talk before we get to Mike Palm.
- 10:11Rocco Bodelli, your manager will let get the line up these phone
- 10:15calls and we'll talk to them if they want to come on.
- 10:18But Rocco Bell Deli, I think the twins did him a favor that
- 10:20yesterday. Bochy, he was I I guess it was a
- 10:24mutual decision for him and the Rangers to part ways.
- 10:27It sure seems likely that if indeed he wants to manage again,
- 10:31that he'd be given the opportunity to go back to San
- 10:35Francisco. I mean, Buster Posey's a general
- 10:37manager there. But if you're Bochy, do you want
- 10:40to do that? I mean, you've got you've got
- 10:43your legacy is intact in San Francisco.
- 10:46If he goes back and it doesn't doesn't go well, if there's not
- 10:50a playoff appearance, if they're, you know, a nice team.
- 10:54Like they have been 80. Two.
- 10:55Yeah, 82 and 8083 and 79. You, you won all those World
- 11:01Championships in San Francisco. Do you want to do that at his
- 11:04age? I hope he doesn't.
- 11:06I hope. He does if he wants to.
- 11:08You always say you hope that they don't.
- 11:11You don't like to see these reincarnations because of.
- 11:14Because of what they've. Built.
- 11:15I'm not going to forget Bruce Bocci in the World Series if he
- 11:18goes back, but when I talk about Michael Jordan, I don't talk
- 11:20about the Bullets or the Wizards.
- 11:21And a lot of people do, though why I don't know, but a lot of
- 11:25people do. It did absolutely nothing.
- 11:27He is still the best basketball player I've ever seen.
- 11:29Me too. He drugged that crap
- 11:31organization on the brink of a playoff and.
- 11:33He told him from day one he was going to, and actually he did.
- 11:35What were they, 40 and 42 after winning like 20 games the year
- 11:38before? That's what Michael Jordan and
- 11:40maybe it grew his legacy. 4 of me.
- 11:43I think it's too easy just to look at the baseball reference.
- 11:46Oh yeah, at the end, it didn't go very well.
- 11:48I remember the high moments, I remember those big moments and
- 11:51for me the legacy very rarely is tarnished.
- 11:54And I heard all the time growing up Willie Mays and the Mets,
- 11:56Willie Mays and the Mets, well, I don't see any highlights of
- 11:58that. What I see as I look at the
- 12:00baseball reference, I see the highlights and I think of him at
- 12:02his apex of when he was he was the best player and maybe still
- 12:06consider the best all around baseball player might be of all
- 12:08time. A lot of people would say that,
- 12:10and not because of the. Mets.
- 12:11There's not as many of them left right anymore.
- 12:14Yeah. Fairpoint.
- 12:15All right, let's get Thunder Joe then.
- 12:17Mike Palm is coming up. He we're going to get the latest
- 12:19from Mike Palm on Circa. Hello, Joe, How are you?
- 12:23Well, I'm OK, Ken, you know I respect you, but I got to put
- 12:26back on in Bush league. OK, pardon.
- 12:29Cardinals still had a chance to send Chicago out to San Diego,
- 12:33and Mike Michael Bush was already a four for four with a
- 12:37AA triple and two home run. So the walk there, yeah, it's.
- 12:42Game. What was the score in the game?
- 12:44I don't know the answer to that. What was the score at that
- 12:47point? It was like 5 five to two or six
- 12:49to two at that point. You still got to play it though.
- 12:52And I think the two home runs are like, OK now.
- 12:55I had even like 2 double S. He might, he might, he might
- 12:58have pitched to him, but the two home runs were overlooked.
- 13:01Yeah, no, that's, that's fair. I mean, I I didn't realize he'd
- 13:04had two. Obviously he was seeing the ball
- 13:07very well that day. It's just the fact that it was
- 13:09Cubs Cards. I think as much as anything, if
- 13:12it would have been, you know, fill in the blank picture net,
- 13:14well, it doesn't need to be a National League teammates
- 13:16because they play everybody. Now.
- 13:18If it would have been anybody else, then maybe it would have
- 13:20been a little bit more palatable.
- 13:22But because it's that, you know, that rivalry, I guess it kind of
- 13:25rankled some people. Well, and I'm not, I'm not the
- 13:27biggest marble fan out there. I was actually hoping.
- 13:30I'm surprised he's. Yeah, right.
- 13:32I. Thought I thought he'd get
- 13:33candidate Yadi Yadi Yadi has actually been guest guest
- 13:37coaching a few times this year. I think they're grooming in.
- 13:39So I think this is probably Marmos last year, but we'll see.
- 13:42Thank you, Joe. Appreciate the call as always.
- 13:45Yep, good to hear from you. All right, let's head out to Las
- 13:47Vegas. Mike Palm, VP of Operations at
- 13:49Circus Sports. Hi, Mike.
- 13:50Trenton, Ken, how are you? Good.
- 13:52Morning fellas, How are you doing?
- 13:53Well, so it's September the 30th wanted to have you on get the
- 13:56latest on where the Circa app is.
- 13:59All of us Circa customers were given were sent an e-mail this
- 14:03pastel Friday, I think it was giving us an update as to, you
- 14:06know, what's coming and why the why September 30th is not going
- 14:10to be met. And I think you're doing the
- 14:11right thing. I mean you the phrase is you
- 14:14only get one chance to make a first impression.
- 14:17But it's a new app and a lot of people have been waiting for
- 14:19this and for it to not be ready and not to have all the bells
- 14:22and whistles. You don't want to do that.
- 14:25So I think it's prudent that you guys are, you know, delaying
- 14:27this, delaying the launch by a few days or whatever it turns
- 14:30out to be. Yeah, we haven't set a date.
- 14:34Certain probably the goal is in the next week to launch, so stay
- 14:39tuned for further details when it's ready.
- 14:41The big thing was all the payment options, Kenny.
- 14:45It's not necessarily the dust and bolts of the app and what
- 14:50new features there are, but we didn't want to launch this and
- 14:54have fewer payment options that we actually have yesterday,
- 14:58which would have been the case if we launched today, because
- 15:00we're still integrating. You have to integrate all the
- 15:03different payment options, whether it's your debit card or
- 15:05whether it's a PayPal or whatever.
- 15:07You still have to integrate it to the new gateways, right, to
- 15:10the new software that you have. So that's really what the delay
- 15:13is, is integrating the payment methods, payment as well as, you
- 15:17know, some deposits as well as withdrawal.
- 15:18So we didn't want to go in with a substandard product as far as
- 15:22that was concerned. We do.
- 15:24We have an exciting promotion coming up probably about a week
- 15:29after we launched. So we're kind of keeping those
- 15:31dates flexible, but it'll be great and it won't be just for
- 15:34new customers and it'll be for existing customers as well.
- 15:37Good. Stay tuned for that.
- 15:39That gets me excited, gets kind of excited as well.
- 15:42Let's jump. Because I just trained my
- 15:44account on World Series. Exactly.
- 15:47Yes, no surprise on that front. Mike.
- 15:50You talked about kind of some of the bells and whistles.
- 15:52You mentioned that to us in the past in a rating, some more of
- 15:55the things that are becoming in vogue, certainly in the gambling
- 15:58space, the same game, parlays, things like that.
- 16:00Can you tell us a little bit more about some more of the
- 16:02features that we'll see with the new Circus Sports Iowa App?
- 16:05Yeah, but the goal is to to be able to offer same game parlays.
- 16:10The goal is to have continuous live betting available, right.
- 16:14Not the not the book it at the half any book it at the
- 16:17commercial breaks, right. So that's, and then the cash
- 16:20out, which I think is a huge, which is a huge thing.
- 16:23Well, so I mean that's, that's ultimately the things that we
- 16:27are are hoping to add to make our, our app, our tech more
- 16:31competitive because we think that the, the product that the,
- 16:34the limits, the pricing is best in class.
- 16:37Now we have to get our menu deeper and we have to get more
- 16:41vetting options available for our customers.
- 16:43I know that you like to personally like to play in game
- 16:46and play. Are you surprised it's gotten as
- 16:49big as it seemingly has gotten? Because, you know, listen to
- 16:52guys on and Visa, talk to my friends.
- 16:54Everybody likes to bet in game. I don't like the number.
- 16:57I'm going to wait till the start of the game.
- 16:58People are really taking advantage of that now, Mike.
- 17:02Yeah, I mean, I always have since the dawn of it.
- 17:05I just felt you can handicap the game all you want pre flop
- 17:11before the game kicks off or the first pitch is thrown and you'll
- 17:15get larger limits and slightly better pricing for that.
- 17:19But until you actually see, you know, do you actually see can
- 17:23the Iowa defensive line hold up against Indiana?
- 17:26Can you know? You have to, you see the game
- 17:28and you see a few series in football.
- 17:30You see a pitcher come out. You know, there's certain
- 17:32pitchers like Yamamoto for the Dodgers.
- 17:34You will know him in the first inning for the game because if
- 17:37his sliders not working, he's going to get roughed up.
- 17:39And if it is, he's almost unpittable.
- 17:41I think there are advantages that overcome the five cents
- 17:45more in Jews to pay for the end game betting.
- 17:48And so it's a growing market. I said five years ago would be
- 17:51the most rapid, probably growing market.
- 17:54You know, props are probably right there with it.
- 17:57Percentage of percentage of volume in the prop market as
- 18:00opposed to betting on sides and totals is probably growing just
- 18:04as fast. As we get ready for the series
- 18:07here with Major League Baseball, in fact underway with the Tigers
- 18:09and Guardians early pitch out there in Vegas for that one, I'm
- 18:13sure Derek and company and all the Michiganders are in.
- 18:15Detroit, by the way. As they jump on early, what have
- 18:19you seen with these series, these wild card rounds series,
- 18:22anything that has jumped out in terms of the betting market here
- 18:25with the four series that we get?
- 18:27Well, I think, I don't know this is a surprise, but you know that
- 18:30the public will bet the Dodgers at any price.
- 18:33That's they just will. Whatever price you put up there,
- 18:36the public's going to bet the Dodgers.
- 18:37So they'll be every series the Dodgers in.
- 18:39It's going to be the most bet upon series.
- 18:41I was surprised Syllable was a dog today.
- 18:46I bet them I got plus 1/18 on the Tigers today.
- 18:50And I also played -102 first five with school.
- 18:53So I mean, he has been the best pitcher all year in the American
- 18:56League. I know they've struggled down
- 18:58the stretch, and I know they blew up in that sixth inning
- 19:01where everything went wrong in Cleveland, what, 5 days ago.
- 19:05But I mean, he was also ahead to nothing in that game going to
- 19:08the bottom 6. So he's come out, he's already
- 19:10hitting 100 on the gun in the first inning here.
- 19:12So we'll see if they can scratch out a few runs against Gavin
- 19:15Williams. Obviously this is the biggest
- 19:17start of his life. Yeah, no doubt one of the most
- 19:19improbable innings, that last out against Cleveland, that 6th
- 19:22inning. Crazy.
- 19:23Are your thoughts on San Diego and Chicago?
- 19:25I might got to ask you about the Cubs.
- 19:27I thought it should be a pickup series and it looks like it
- 19:29really is. I mean, the Cubs are very slight
- 19:31favorite in game one. You can argue that the Padres
- 19:34will have the better starting pitching.
- 19:37I think home field means a lot. I think if the series was in San
- 19:40Diego, the Padres would probably be $1.35 or $1.40 favorite at
- 19:44the hope for kind of cooler weather in Chicago.
- 19:46But I think of all the series that that that's the biggest
- 19:49toss up of them all. And the Cubs got themselves to
- 19:52the spot, you know, and Matt Boyce been terrific.
- 19:55I remember sitting at Sloane Park spring training, watching
- 19:58him throw 82 and 83 miles an hour.
- 20:00I could have never imagined he'd be starting game one of the Wild
- 20:02Card Series. But you've got him, you've got
- 20:04Horton, you've got, you know, Imanaga.
- 20:07So I think it'll be a great series.
- 20:09And let's hope the Cubs can advance.
- 20:11And the Cubs, Brewers would be a heck of a lot of fun.
- 20:14Definitely would sign up for that.
- 20:15Major League Baseball, very excited they get Yankees, Red
- 20:17Sox here in the opening round. First time in a long time we've
- 20:20seen this series happen in the playoffs.
- 20:23Betting wise, anything that you've got seen there?
- 20:26Kind of hard to swallow. One thing that I looked at, you
- 20:28guys have right now, Red Sox in three games.
- 20:30If you're looking for a price that's plus 360, but I'm going
- 20:33to guess a lot of Yankees money coming in.
- 20:36Been a yellow Yankees money and deservedly so.
- 20:38They've played great the last six weeks of the year.
- 20:41You thought the Yankees were, you know, everybody was betting
- 20:44the Yankees no playoffs. I mean, and they had tied
- 20:47Toronto. They did everything they could.
- 20:48They win every game at home the last week of the year.
- 20:50I mean, they're playing really well.
- 20:52They've got the starting pitching.
- 20:53Can the bullpen hold off? Remember the bullpen right after
- 20:56the All Star break was a disaster, so should be a great
- 20:58series. I mean the Red Sox were a
- 21:00darling pick for a while too because they were outside.
- 21:02So people have the Red Sox at good prices to win the American
- 21:06League in the World Series. I do have a ticket and the Red
- 21:09Sox at 35 to one, a small ticket, but it's nice to be
- 21:13alive to some of these, right? The big thing for me is the
- 21:15Brewers at 30 to 1 to win the National.
- 21:17League. Nice.
- 21:17Speaking of being alive, I'm alive into October with our
- 21:20survivor for the first time ever, I made October Mike ball.
- 21:23I thought I had two going into the weekend.
- 21:25I had the Packers, unfortunately that went by the wayside, but I
- 21:28had the Broncos last night and I see October for the first time,
- 21:31so I can do it. Good to see.
- 21:34Hey Mike. Well, we'll wait for more on on
- 21:37what day that will be. We'll look for the promotion the
- 21:39week following. We will talk to you on Friday.
- 21:42Perhaps by then you'll have more information.
- 21:44Know you're busy. Thanks for giving us a few
- 21:46minutes and it'll be worth the wait once it does come to life
- 21:49in the state of Iowa. You have a great day, Mike.
- 21:52Enjoy Super Tuesday guys. Absolutely it is.
- 21:55We will. Good stuff.
- 21:56See MM Palm, vice president of operations at Circa Sports.
- 22:00I like that Super Tuesday. It is a super.
- 22:02Boy, hell yeah. I love these days.
- 22:04We'll take a time out. We'll come back Vinnie Ayer.
- 22:06We'll talk NFL with Vinnie. We have a couple of minutes.
- 22:10Well, we'll do it after Vinny. Well, Miller and Condon talking
- 22:13sports with you. Glad you're with us on Des
- 22:14Moines sports station 106.3 KXNO and the Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:18Network. Hi, 1230, welcome back Miller in
- 22:23Condon, Iowa sports radio network.
- 22:26He keeping you up to date on the Detroit Cleveland series.
- 22:30Midway through two in Cleveland Tigers 1 zip over the guardians.
- 22:34Let's talk some NFL, shall we? Vinny Iyer writes about it for
- 22:38the Sporting News sportingnews.com.
- 22:40He also hosts locked on fantasy football part of the locked on
- 22:43network and Vinny joins us. Vinny Trenton, Ken, as always,
- 22:47thank you for finding some time for us.
- 22:49Vinny, I got to start with the Baltimore Ravens.
- 22:52I know that you have slid them down significantly in your power
- 22:55rankings all the way out of the top 10.
- 22:57Not saying that's unfair. They do not look like what some
- 23:00people, myself included, thought might be the best team in the
- 23:02NFL early in the season or prior to the season with all those
- 23:06mounting injuries. Vinny, particularly on defense
- 23:09and now Lamar Jackson is is banged up.
- 23:13I can't write them off yet, but boy, it's a tough hill, is it
- 23:16not? Yeah, I mean, their schedule
- 23:20opens up a little bit. I know they still have a chance
- 23:23in the division because the Steelers are not running away
- 23:27with it at this very moment. They do have a two game lead.
- 23:30The Bengals, we know are weekend without Joe Burrows.
- 23:33We don't know when they'll get back on track.
- 23:35The Browns are not really piece of competition, but the AFC as a
- 23:38whole is better with the Colts and Jaguars off to surprisingly
- 23:42good starts here. So that helps.
- 23:44And the Chargers and Chiefs seem to be on track a little bit.
- 23:48And then maybe the Patriots would be a factor in the playoff
- 23:51race as well. So look, the Ravens are just not
- 23:54playing well. That's the biggest concern.
- 23:56It's not like they can flip a switch and start winning.
- 23:59But on the bright side, if you're Ravens fan, you'd say,
- 24:02look, we played some of our hardest games.
- 24:05I mean, the Bills game was a tough one not to win.
- 24:09If they've won that game, maybe things will be a little
- 24:11different at 2:00 and 2:00, much more than one and three.
- 24:14But so far, there are losses into the Lions, Ravens and
- 24:18Chiefs. Now, they probably figure they
- 24:20should have had a better shot than Lions being a home game.
- 24:23So you could say maybe 3 and 1 was their best scenario here.
- 24:27So they're underachieving by two games, but you can justify those
- 24:31results. But now it's time.
- 24:34Now that that margin error for error is gone, you have to
- 24:37pretty much be on point the rest of the year.
- 24:39Let's go to the team that was on the other sideline that didn't
- 24:42move to two and two. Kansas City, certainly an eye
- 24:44opening performance out of them, not just winning the game, but
- 24:46in the fashion that they did. Vinny, when you look at this
- 24:49squad and you look at this Kansas City team, there was
- 24:52people hoping to throw some dirt on them.
- 24:54Certainly doesn't appear to be the case Now they're healthier
- 24:56and they're getting Rishi Rice back here pretty soon.
- 24:59You look at this squad and it looks like more of the same.
- 25:01Can you make the argument they might be the most complete team
- 25:04in the AFC? Well, I think that's been the
- 25:07case for a while. I think that's why they've been
- 25:11the dominant team in the FC and that's why other teams have not
- 25:14been able to breakthrough except for the Bengals in recent years.
- 25:16So that's basically business as usual and everyone wants style
- 25:20points, I think from the Chiefs, not only them, but the Eagles at
- 25:23four and O. But they don't need to do that
- 25:26anymore. They've already proved
- 25:27themselves. It's like the Patriots, when
- 25:29people used to RIP in the Patriots like they have only one
- 25:32goal is to stay healthy, play well and get to the Super Bowl
- 25:37and win it. So I think the Eagles have kind
- 25:40of crossed over to that threshold.
- 25:42The Chiefs have already been there.
- 25:43Like they don't really care about 2:00 and 2:00 where
- 25:46they're at. They obviously don't even care
- 25:48about home field because they've been able to get it done without
- 25:50home field before. So I think they're just
- 25:53methodical. They may not be as exciting as
- 25:56people want, but I think some of that exciting Patrick Mahomes is
- 25:59starting to come back with. They were Worthy back.
- 26:02And if Worthy and Rice can stay healthy together for this team,
- 26:06I think they're going to become a lot more dangerous, especially
- 26:09when Travis Kelsey is becoming a limited factor.
- 26:12But I think the way that Hollywood Brown and Taekwon
- 26:15Thornton and other guys have contributed this, this can be a
- 26:18very dangerous Chiefs passing game down the stretch, even if
- 26:21you don't see Chelsea all of a sudden turn back the clock.
- 26:25I'm looking for a team video. I spent last night trying to
- 26:27find a team that's kind of in under the radar right now and
- 26:31that's kind of how you listed them in your power rankings.
- 26:34And I came up with the Seattle Seahawks is the team that, you
- 26:37know, I didn't give much chance prior to the season.
- 26:39Tough division. Obviously the Rams are there the
- 26:42Niners a lot of love for that easy schedule.
- 26:45Sam Darnold, we saw him fall apart late in the year, last
- 26:47year in Week 17 and then obviously in the first playoff
- 26:50game. But Mike McDonald's a terrific
- 26:53coach. The defense is absolutely
- 26:55loaded. The Seahawks, are they maybe one
- 26:57of those under the radar? Keep an eye out for this type of
- 27:01team. Yeah, I mean, they're definitely
- 27:04playing well. I mean, the defense you figure
- 27:06was going to improve with Mike McDonald, That's where they're
- 27:08at. They're kind of have pretty
- 27:10strict formula. They're going to for some
- 27:13turnovers, play some defense. They're a lot like the Vikings
- 27:15game plan, except they do a little bit more of the running
- 27:18than they do with the passing. So they're kind of following
- 27:21that blueprint with the the former Ravens defensive scheme.
- 27:26So when you look at that look, they're going to be in it and
- 27:29it's a good test this week. They're hosting the Buccaneers.
- 27:31The Buccaneers also a good opportunity after their first
- 27:35loss, a tough one at home to the Eagles.
- 27:37How do they respond? How do they kind of just say
- 27:41we're short handed, but game day from Mayfield is playing well.
- 27:44So this is a good test for Seattle to see again.
- 27:48Can they hang with some of the better teams in the NFC
- 27:52consistently go forward? That's what we have to see.
- 27:55I mean, they didn't look all that good against the 49ers in
- 27:58their first Test. So we'll see how this one goes.
- 28:00So we saw the return of Micah to Dallas and a 4040 tie.
- 28:05Just an incredible football game.
- 28:06So much fun and entertaining. Is this what the Cowboys are
- 28:09going to be this season though? Really entertaining, going to
- 28:11score a ton of points, give up a ton of points and and is that
- 28:14enough for them to at minimum maybe hang around and Dallas
- 28:18could be a team with the right kind of December that could find
- 28:21themselves maybe into the wild card mix?
- 28:24Yeah, I mean, the NFC has got some holes for sure.
- 28:28And there's no guarantee on a lot of these teams.
- 28:31I mean, you figure Eagles are going to make it.
- 28:35Maybe you feel confident about the Buccaneers, then maybe the
- 28:38Rams, right? But there's everything else
- 28:40that's kind of up in the air in terms of how we're going to see
- 28:44these things play out with all these divisions.
- 28:47And the North is the division to watch to see if there's multiple
- 28:51teams coming out of it again. But when you look at the whole
- 28:55landscape, right, Yeah. The Cowboys, they showed some
- 28:58signs on defense. But look, the Packers were
- 29:00supposed to be this dominant defense.
- 29:02They shared cracks, too. So to me, I don't think there's
- 29:05a team that can just win with defense anymore.
- 29:08Like you have to have ability to outscore the other team and step
- 29:12on the gas. We've seen it with the Lions.
- 29:14We're seeing it with the Rams now.
- 29:16You have to be able to do that in certain games.
- 29:19The Eagles and most approved capable do that.
- 29:21So again then the profile to be competitive, I think how to put
- 29:27this in perspective, I think that the tie for the Cowboys was
- 29:30huge. I think the Packers had to be
- 29:32disappointed about that tie, but I think the Cowboys can gain a
- 29:36lot of confidence. A Packers were supposed to go in
- 29:38and roll us the and a big lead. We came back, we fought, we got
- 29:44if you're playing hockey terms a point out of it.
- 29:47You know that they didn't expect to get in the standings.
- 29:50So it's that high can come into play and they get The Jets this
- 29:53week. So there should be every
- 29:54expectation they get to 500. Vinny Iyers, our guest from The
- 29:58Sporting News. Vinny, I watched as most people
- 30:00did Monday Night Football last night.
- 30:04Joe Burrell, I don't know when he's going to be back, if he is
- 30:07that best. It sounds like, you know, early
- 30:10December. And I'm not sure if there'll be
- 30:11anything to play for at that point or any reason to come
- 30:14back. But the reason that he could
- 30:16come back is if they make a change at quarterback.
- 30:19I know you've suggested Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins is still
- 30:22out there. What's the likelihood that the
- 30:24Bengals shop for a veteran quarterback?
- 30:27A stopgap until Joe Burrow is ready to go?
- 30:30Browning, nice story. Last year or two years ago,
- 30:33whatever it was when he came in, obviously not the the it's not
- 30:37going the same way this year. Do they need to add a veteran?
- 30:39Do you believe they will? Well, I think I I just don't get
- 30:44how you can look at those two games and say we're in a good
- 30:47spot, right? It's just not possible.
- 30:50I mean it wasn't even competitive.
- 30:52It's a difference between struggling, OK, the Vikings and
- 30:56Broncos defense is not easy. Not 2 favorable back-to-back Rd.
- 31:01starts to take over for an elite quarterback, right.
- 31:03It's all that fair. He hasn't played at home and
- 31:05Browning might be playing better at home, but they get Detroit
- 31:08this week. So I mean that type of offense
- 31:13is not going to beat Detroit. So, I mean, I don't know if
- 31:17teams look at it that way. Are they just trying to be
- 31:19competitive in these games and kind of inflate, oh, yeah, we
- 31:22can slow down Detroit enough to win the game.
- 31:25Like, I think there's kind of a fallacy to think that, right?
- 31:29I mean, you have to think about what can we do to win games?
- 31:32What's the problem area right now?
- 31:35The problem area right now is you're not getting the ball to
- 31:37your wide receivers. And that's where your money is
- 31:41on this team when it's not Joe Burrow.
- 31:43So go get somebody who's going to put the ball in the hands of
- 31:46these wide receivers. I mean, there's lesser backups
- 31:48doing this, right? Even if Tyra Taylor knows, OK,
- 31:51I'm going to put it in the ball in the hands of my play makers
- 31:54and just try your best. I mean, look, there's offensive
- 31:57line issues, They're not a great running team, all that stuff.
- 32:01But maybe that's why they need somebody who can create a little
- 32:05bit more. And Russell Wilson can still do
- 32:07that. He's slowed down with his arm
- 32:08and his legs, but he's also very cheap and he's not having a job
- 32:12right now, and I think he'll be something to watch like Jame or
- 32:17Jameis Winston will take anything here just to make the
- 32:20Bengals a little bit more competitive because it's kind of
- 32:23frustrating to watch their receivers do nothing.
- 32:26Speaking of frustrations, there's a feels like there's a
- 32:28lot of it for A.J. Brown cryptic tweets and I found
- 32:31this that absolutely fascinating.
- 32:33First more games of the year, the Eagles have been hit yards
- 32:37per play by every single opponent, yet they're four and O
- 32:40very difficult to do. I mean yards per play.
- 32:42Right now they're hanging out the likes of Cleveland,
- 32:44Cincinnati and Tennessee. That's what is happening in
- 32:47Philadelphia. Two years ago, though, they got
- 32:49that ten and one start. I think we could all see there
- 32:51were concerns there. Do you have concerns with this
- 32:54Eagles team or there is doing what they need to put piling up
- 32:57the wins? They'll be fine.
- 32:58How do you look at it? Yeah, I did mention earlier the
- 33:02Eagles are kind of like the Chiefs.
- 33:03They don't need you over dissecting their dial points or
- 33:07how they got to wins. They're in the bottom line
- 33:09business really. This is that's what we're doing
- 33:12here in the NFL, right? The bottom line, are you winning
- 33:15games? And I think people again, comes
- 33:18back to the Patriots, people have that same frustration.
- 33:21How do they win with this roster, with this type of
- 33:24offense and defense? Will they change every week to
- 33:27adjust to their opponents and find the best way to attack them
- 33:30and beat them, which a lot of teams do not do?
- 33:33Well, honestly, the Eagles just kind of OK, you're going to take
- 33:36away this, we're going to do that.
- 33:37Or we think we were going to go in and do this, but then we
- 33:41couldn't. So we're going to adjust and
- 33:42pivot to this and this grind out of win.
- 33:45I think that's frustrating to some people when you look at the
- 33:48Eagles and Chiefs and how they win.
- 33:51But that's the price that comes with this.
- 33:54Really good, right? You're just good.
- 33:57So you can find different ways to win.
- 33:59You don't have to light up the stat sheet to do things.
- 34:02And I think, look, the Eagles are just fine.
- 34:05I mean, they still have not lost the game, but Neil Hertz,
- 34:09Devonta Smith, A.J. Brown and Stakewon Berkeley play
- 34:13and healthy together. I mean, that's all you need to
- 34:15know. Like when those four guys are in
- 34:17the lineup, they win. And A.J.
- 34:19Brown can tweet all he wants about this, but he's getting
- 34:22well paid to do a lot of things for the Eagles when they need
- 34:27it. And he's a Super Bowl champion,
- 34:28so I don't know what else he wants.
- 34:31Like, you know, your time will come.
- 34:33You're going to be needed in a bigger spot.
- 34:36I mean, so just it's a marathon here.
- 34:39It's not coming down to, oh, I didn't get the ball in one game.
- 34:42So what I mean, there's a lot of games that you need to get the
- 34:44ball in, so. Good stuff.
- 34:47Vinny Iyer from the Sporting News Locked on Network where he
- 34:49has his daily fantasy football pod.
- 34:52Fat locked on network. Sporting News for Vinny.
- 34:54Vinny, thanks for jumping on. Appreciate it.
- 34:56We'll talk to you down the road. Thank you, Vinny Iyer.
- 34:59Yep. Thanks guys.
- 35:00Good to talk to you, Vinny Iyers.
- 35:01We check in on the NFL. Checking in on the wild card.
- 35:05The Tigers have a runner on 3rd. There are two outs as they bat
- 35:08the top of the third. They're up 1 zip.
- 35:11Take your time out, come back, finish up the hour.
- 35:12Miller and Condon glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:15Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 35:26Welcome back. Final segment here in the first
- 35:28hour of the program, our number two more baseball conversation,
- 35:33our friend Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 35:36We'll stop by. We'll pick his brain how he sees
- 35:38the playoffs, maybe a couple other topics as well with Matt
- 35:42Snyder and then we'll talk to Bill Bender from the Sporting
- 35:46News where he covers college football.
- 35:48Trent's plays of the day circus sports sponsor those those
- 35:51coming up here in about total is more from an hour from right
- 35:54now. We missed a keyword.
- 35:56Is it too late to? Go back, let's.
- 35:57Try it. Let's do it then.
- 35:58OK, The keyword this past hour, this hour was bills.
- 36:02I think you still have time to go to kx&o.com.
- 36:04The keyword bills, bills, KX and o.com boys habit, right?
- 36:08You get out of that habit, you forget about it.
- 36:10But it's Bills. We got another one coming up
- 36:12here in about half an hour or thereabouts.
- 36:15So back to the NFL for just a second.
- 36:18Is there is there another the radar team for you?
- 36:20Like to me it's the Seahawks. I'm not saying they're going to
- 36:22win the Lombardi Trophy, but I I didn't give them much of a
- 36:25chance prior to the season. It would be them.
- 36:29I think as I try and identify that, you know, team that's kind
- 36:33of lingering in the middle of the pack that just come back and
- 36:36maybe take a look in a month or so.
- 36:38I think it's still Atlanta for me.
- 36:41And that that loss that they had two weeks ago to Carolina, you
- 36:46know, this head scratcher, right?
- 36:47I mean, there's, there's a couple of those every single
- 36:50year. Like not just the team loses,
- 36:51loses in that kind of fashion. I still think we're going to
- 36:55have kind of look back at that. I don't same thing.
- 36:57I don't think they're winning anything big.
- 36:59They're not making a run to the NFC Championship game, but a
- 37:03playoff team. I still believe that there's
- 37:05enough there. They have improved the pass rush
- 37:07enough, coupled with Pennix, his growth, his maturation, that
- 37:11they're going to be fine. I mean, he's got weapons all
- 37:12over the field. Yeah, no, he does.
- 37:14It feels like finally, maybe Pitts, maybe the light bulbs
- 37:17coming out for him. Obviously London is an absolute
- 37:19stud. They got good veterans like
- 37:22Mooney. So the peace is there.
- 37:23Football, you know, going back to that, that game, that Sunday
- 37:27night game against the Vikings, he just, he's such an incredible
- 37:30athlete. He is just one of those special,
- 37:33special types. So I think there's enough there
- 37:35certainly in the NFC that would be a team that I haven't given
- 37:38up on 2:00 and 2:00, but I think they're they're still going to
- 37:40be definitely be part of the mix.
- 37:41Top team in the NFC? Is it the Eagles for you?
- 37:44No. It's not the Eagles, all right.
- 37:46Is it the AND? There, there's something off
- 37:49there. With the Eagles, yeah, you don't
- 37:51like their offense. Well, I hate their offense.
- 37:52They didn't complete a pass in the second-half.
- 37:54I. Know it's hard to believe and
- 37:55they're four and O they had a big lead.
- 37:57It's a good thing because Tampa, if it would have showed at them,
- 37:59is it the Lions? Maybe?
- 38:01Yeah, I kind of feel the same way.
- 38:03It was so dreadful. They get beaten in a fashion
- 38:06that they did. New coordinators, new offensive
- 38:09line, a lot of new, yet the talent's still there.
- 38:12And because of that, if I power rated right now, because if the
- 38:16Lions and Eagles are playing this weekend on a neutral, who
- 38:18you taking? I'm taking the Lions.
- 38:19See, and, and that's kind of how I like to look at it with my
- 38:22power rankings that we do. Heck, if they played the Bucks
- 38:25this weekend on a neutral, Yeah. Maybe right?
- 38:27I might take Tampa now. I wouldn't take San Francisco or
- 38:30Seattle. How about the Rams?
- 38:32The Rams, yeah, they they had them beat.
- 38:34They had them beat. They dominated that game for
- 38:373/4. I can't believe they lost the
- 38:39game and. Maybe it's also the memories of
- 38:42two years ago, as I mentioned with Vinny, what happened to
- 38:45them. Even with that great start, it's
- 38:47something felt off and something, again, just feels
- 38:49off. AJ Brown's talking about, you
- 38:51know, he's quoting Bible verses about, you know, not saying
- 38:54anything and getting out of here when you're doing things like
- 38:56that. That's a problem.
- 38:58He had 9 targets in the game, 9 targets, 2 catches.
- 39:01Yeah. Is something off with Jalen
- 39:04Hurts? Do you think there is?
- 39:06I don't know. No, I don't think so.
- 39:08Obviously, I'll might have a different opinion after they
- 39:11play Denver this yes weekend. So let's go.
- 39:13Can they beat somebody good please so.
- 39:15I think Denver's gonna give me a game.
- 39:17You do. Well, I do too, because I do.
- 39:19I don't believe in Philadelphia, so that's not going to barely be
- 39:22the elixir for me. Look.
- 39:23At Denver's defense and and let me stop right now because I was
- 39:26screaming at the TV at Riley Moss or leading that football
- 39:29game again last night because here we go again.
- 39:32And it was here we go again. And then all of a sudden was it
- 39:34wasn't. I don't know what they did.
- 39:36I don't know what Riley Moss did.
- 39:38Or maybe it's a combination of just heating up Jake Browning.
- 39:42But T Higgins was a non factor anymore.
- 39:44Chase was a non factor when it was Riley Moss on him.
- 39:47But Moss got off to a terrible start again.
- 39:49But it was he the rest of the game, he was fine.
- 39:55Is it the Chiefs in the in the AFC or is it Buffalo?
- 39:58And I know you don't like their. Defence I don't if.
- 40:01This weekend, Buffalo, Kansas City neutral field.
- 40:05I've taken Kansas City. I hate to say it.
- 40:09I know you do. I bet the Chiefs against
- 40:12everybody that's got a prayer in the NFC last night.
- 40:14Every single one of them. I just can't.
- 40:16I had to do it. I had to do it.
- 40:19Why do we have to have these conversations every year?
- 40:21Late September, early afternoon. I try to tell you all spring and
- 40:25summer, you won't listen. No, you dig your heels in.
- 40:29Yes. And here we are once again.
- 40:30It's been a decade, yeah. A freaking decade of domination
- 40:35in the AFC West. I mean, we'll see if Buffalo had
- 40:40a defense. I think that they've got a
- 40:41chance out of the North. I just don't see the Ravens.
- 40:45I mean, I hope that they can turn it on.
- 40:48Just stay close, win the division, you get a home game.
- 40:51You don't need to have to be the one or the two.
- 40:53Just win the division. Is that defense beyond repair?
- 40:55Yeah, I think it is. I think it is.
- 40:58I mean, they're going to get some of their dudes back, but
- 41:02Cincinnati? No.
- 41:03Can the? Colts keep building.
- 41:06I mean this, these offensive numbers are unreal and it's not
- 41:09just the non punting things. I mean, you dive into the DVOA
- 41:12and some of the other numbers that are out there gave the.
- 41:13Rams a hell of a game, yeah. Absolutely.
- 41:15And I was shocked. That's where I walked away most
- 41:17impressed maybe with the Colts in a loss than I do the three
- 41:20victories. That was eye opening.
- 41:21No, it was all right. Back to baseball.
- 41:24My free and my screen is frozen up, so I can't tell you what's
- 41:26going on. Oh, no.
- 41:28In MLB, it's still 1 nothing. We're playing the top of the
- 41:33fourth, all right, Matt Snyder on baseball, Bill Bender on
- 41:36college football, Miller in Condon on Des Moines Sports
- 41:39Station, 106.3 kicks and.
