- 0:00SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 0:00SPEAKER_04: I had to go find the video.
- 0:02SPEAKER_04: I appreciate what you're saying.
- 0:03SPEAKER_04: Obviously, someone with cancer.
- 0:05SPEAKER_04: That's expensive.
- 0:06SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't mind donating to help someone with cancer.
- 0:09SPEAKER_04: I want you to listen to the because I was just telling Ali so if if you hadn't heard about this, there's a video that went out last week.
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: A lot of the news uh outlets picked it up.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: Kind of went viral of this old man bringing suitcases, obviously, that you know were being delivered to the person that was traveling back to their house up a flight of stairs.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, when I l yeah, when I lose when I lose my luggage, he's I've had this happen.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: I had luggage lost in Denver and somebody dropped it off to me at uh well it's actually your old co-host, Amanda.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: They brought it to her house.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: That's what he was doing.
- 0:41SPEAKER_04: Okay, now I understand.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: It's like that.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: Now, of course, he's going up a flight of stairs because it's like a second floor apartment and all this, and it looks like heavy bags.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: So listen to this and you tell me how you feel.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: This is the moment caught on camera that captured hearts around the country.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: The video we first showed you last week appearing to show 81-year-old Don Johnson lugging suitcases up the stairs.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Hold on, Don Johnson.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: The old actor, yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: All right, well.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: For his courier job, all he said to help pay for his wife's cancer treatments.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Cancer treatment is very expensive.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: The video posted by a GoFundMe user named Aaron H.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: GoFundMe says Aaron H doesn't exist, and she wasn't a stranger.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Hi everyone, my name is Amy Johnson, and I'm the daughter of Don and Josephine.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: GoFundMe telling NBC News.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Aaron H was actually their daughter, Amy, who told them she believed their story would be more compelling, coming from someone they didn't know.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: In that so-called doorbell video, Amy telling GoFundMe, she shot that too.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Look closely, you can see the camera appearing to sway at various points.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Amy taking to social media over the weekend, saying the GoFundMe account was hers all along, but insisting the rest of the story is real.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: My mother is suffering from pancreatic cancer, and my dad is delivering luggages.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: I gotta stop it right there because I think she's a top-notch scam artist all the way around.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah?
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: I don't think that I uh do I think mom might be suffering from a uh a a cancer?
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Possibly.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: Or she's taking advantage of her elderly parents and using a pocket it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: She's using them to get this.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, I just I mean, the crocodile tears now to help.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: GoFundMe since shut the page down, refunding all the donations.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: A company spokesperson telling us our trust and safety team identified factual misrepresentations, which directly violates her terms of service.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, vaguely hasn't responded to NBC News' specific questions about the story.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Amy has set up a new crowdfunding page and has already raised tens of thousands.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Of course she has, because she's a professional scam artist.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: So this is why I never do any GoFundMe's whatsoever.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: If somebody ever sends us a link, I'm like, yeah, I'm not gonna do it because I just always feel like there is some sort of scam attached, even if it's legit.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: And what am I supposed to do at this point?
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Like, let's say you're doing a GoFundMe for can't like let's say Scott had cancer.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Am I supposed to upload his all of his doctor notes?
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: In this case, the only way that I will believe that she is not a top-notch scam artist is literally if a medical record is provided that the mother is in the midst of this.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Because right now I'm watching that video and I had literally just I I believe that she's a professional uh actress uh when it comes to tears, not in the sense of like Hollywood professional actress.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: I mean she was able to turn that on right there.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: Sorry, she's upset because she's out$700,000.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Now, maybe the parents would have gotten something.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: I don't believe the parents necessarily are the big scam artists here.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: I think it's her, and I think she used her parents.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: And yeah, I don't I don't buy until I see a record that says for sure.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: Well, there's two problems here.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: I now need to see a record that mom has uh well, they said pancreatic cancer.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: So that's one.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: But that's now you can easily fake too.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: Now I need to see a pay stub of what his job really is.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: And well, but you can fake that that I think you can fake as well, but you can easily fake medical records, doctors' notes, things like that, which is another reason why, even if you show me this stuff, I'm still skeptical and I'm still not donating to your GoFundMe.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: So she just proves even more on why I don't do it, despite the fact that I bet you her mom does need something.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: And I want to help her mom because I I mean, just like in the heart sense, and I'm really not going to.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: But let's let's be real.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: I'm not.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: I'm not.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: So, but I want to help if I have to.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: But don't you want something now?
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: Now knowing the backstory of this and that the whole thing was not it might have been staged or anyway, it was refilmed to present this in the most dramatic way, and now she's on there crying about it, you know, and the and the parents are sitting next to her trying to show support.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: Don't you want to see something that proves to you okay, this is legit.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: What what if it comes out that mom had melanoma they cured 20 years ago because she suntanned too much?
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Not that it's not cancer, not that it can't spread, but yes, I want to see the the actual and and can I also get a doctor to talk on there too?
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Because I want the mom to say, give the doctor his okay, because I no HIPAA laws need to be violated right now.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: But I want her doctor, Doctor Smith, to say Well, now I want to see his credentials and make sure they didn't just hire some guy to be a doctor.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: And this is why I don't give to GoFundMe.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: God, this is such a scam.
