- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 184, can you believe it? Lucas: It's been a journey. Today, we're adding two more verbs to your Malay toolkit. Luna: Ooh, I love verbs. Are they as useful as 'makan' and 'minum'? Lucas: Absolutely. Today: 'baca' which means 'read', and 'tulis' which means 'write'. Luna: Baca and tulis. Okay, say them again slowly? Lucas: Sure. Baca.... Baca. Tulis.... Tulis. Luna: Baca, tulis. Got it. So 'I read' would be 'Saya baca'? Lucas: Exactly right. 'Saya baca' means 'I read'. And if you want to say what you read, like 'I read a book', it's 'Saya baca buku'. Luna: Saya baca buku. That's clean. So 'buku' is book, which we learned before. Lucas: Yeah, from our fruit episode? No, that was 'pisang'. 'Buku' was from the school items episode. Good memory though. Luna: I try. Now for 'write' — 'Saya tulis'? Lucas: Yes. 'Saya tulis' means 'I write'. For example, 'Saya tulis surat' — I write a letter. Luna: Saya tulis surat. 'Surat' is letter, right? Lucas: You're on fire today. Yes. Luna: Okay. Let me try a full sentence. 'Dia baca buku'? Lucas: Perfect. 'Dia baca buku' — he or she reads a book. Now let's do 'Dia tulis surat'. Luna: Dia tulis surat. That's 'he writes a letter'. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a few more. 'Kita baca majalah' — we read a magazine. Luna: Kita baca majalah. 'Majalah' is magazine. That one I remember from the library episode. Lucas: Nice. And 'Saya tulis nama' — I write a name. Luna: Saya tulis nama. So if I'm filling out a form, I can say that. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put them together in a mini conversation. Imagine you're at a bookstore. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: I'll say: 'Saya baca buku ini.' You can respond: 'Saya tulis surat.' Luna: Saya baca buku ini. Saya tulis surat. Hey, that works. Lucas: Good. Now, you know what? If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, we want to remind you that listener support keeps this show ad-free and going. Luna: Yeah, it's true. We love making these episodes for you. Lucas: If you'd like to support us, you can buy us a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's 'buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo'. Luna: Every little bit helps us keep teaching. Now back to baca and tulis. Lucas: Right. Let's try another combo. 'Kita baca surat khabar' — we read a newspaper. Luna: Kita baca surat khabar. 'Surat khabar' is newspaper. That's new for me. Lucas: It is. 'Surat' is letter, 'khabar' is news. Put together, it's newspaper. Luna: Cool. So 'Saya baca surat khabar' means I read a newspaper. Lucas: Exactly. And 'Dia tulis cerita' — he writes a story. Luna: Dia tulis cerita. 'Cerita' is story. That's from the... hmm, I don't remember that one. Lucas: It's new today. 'Cerita' means story or tale. Luna: Okay, so 'Saya baca cerita' would be I read a story. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick review. What does 'baca' mean? Luna: 'Baca' is read. Lucas: And 'tulis'? Luna: 'Tulis' is write. Lucas: Great. Now say 'I write a letter' in Malay. Luna: Saya tulis surat. Lucas: And 'He reads a book'. Luna: Dia baca buku. Lucas: Awesome. One more: 'We read a magazine'. Luna: Kita baca majalah. Lucas: You've got it. Let's do a final conversation. Imagine we're at a cafe. I say: 'Saya baca majalah. Awak baca apa?' Luna: You read a magazine and ask what I read. I'll say: 'Saya baca buku.' Lucas: Nice. And then you ask: 'Awak tulis apa?' — what do you write? Luna: I reply: 'Saya tulis surat.' Lucas: Perfect. That's a solid mini dialogue. Great work today, Luna. Luna: Thanks! I feel like I can actually use these. Baca, tulis — simple but powerful. Lucas: Exactly. Keep practicing these sentences. Say them out loud. Write them down if you can. See you next time for more Malay. Luna: Bye bye!
