- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:15Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:22Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Check him out on Yahoo Sports.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Charles McDonald, what's going on?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Nothing much.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It's a week in black history this week as Mike
- 0:33Speaker 3: Tomlin and the Steelers split. You got Baltimore, the Ravens owner,
- 0:38Speaker 3: going absolutely loco. So I was talking to Ryan before
- 0:42Speaker 3: we got on. I was like, usually this week and
- 0:43Speaker 3: a half is a little quieter, where you kind of
- 0:46Speaker 3: focus on the playoff teams.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You got your fires in the background.
- 0:48Speaker 3: But no, we had a seismic shift in the NFL
- 0:51Speaker 3: that unfortunately has caused this week to be– really, week
- 0:55Speaker 3: and a half to be a lot more work than
- 0:57Speaker 3: I'm used to it being at this time of year.
- 0:58Speaker 1: But for a lot of– I was like, look at
- 1:00Speaker 1: Charles setting up the whole show and then I realized
- 1:03Speaker 1: it all came back around to him.
- 1:08Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:09Speaker 1: This was not about the television show. This was about
- 1:11Speaker 1: him thinking about how he thought he was going to
- 1:13Speaker 1: be chilling this week.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yes, I did think I was going to be chilling
- 1:16Speaker 3: this week. I thought, because this is the best part
- 1:18Speaker 3: of the year as a national writer where you cut
- 1:21Speaker 3: down on the amount of games. You go from basically
- 1:25Speaker 3: every team playing every week and now we got four
- 1:27Speaker 3: games this weekend. It's perfect, but Fortunately, the NFL decided, no,
- 1:31Speaker 3: we have to go through like an era-defining shift in
- 1:35Speaker 3: our head coaching talent.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I just pray for those guys who take those jobs.
- 1:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I have a quasi-black history moment that has happened this week,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and it is not about football. I don't want to delay.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You're supposed to get to the show at the top
- 1:49Speaker 1: of the show, right? But I want to put a
- 1:51Speaker 1: pin in this because I want to talk about it
- 1:52Speaker 1: right before the break. It is a very simple observation,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but somebody don't let me forget about this.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin, I did something on YouTube. Those of you
- 2:01Speaker 1: who are audio listeners, we do YouTube exclusives. A lot
- 2:04Speaker 1: of times when something hot happens, we turn that thing
- 2:06Speaker 1: right back around fast on YouTube, trying to get that money.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You understand what I'm saying?
- 2:11Speaker 1: And so, you know, you might want to jump on
- 2:13Speaker 1: the 21st century and head over there every now and
- 2:16Speaker 1: then and see what we got going.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Plus, I be looking good or a bitch. So, Tomlin,
- 2:23Speaker 4: to me, This made sense.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And it sounds like I said there that I didn't
- 2:28Speaker 1: think the Steelers were that upset that he decided to go,
- 2:31Speaker 1: but it doesn't sound like the Steelers were very happy.
- 2:33Speaker 4: That he decided to go, right?
- 2:35Speaker 1: It seems truly, or maybe they just really love that
- 2:38Speaker 1: man enough that we gonna ride this story out for real.
- 2:40Speaker 4: But they seem really.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That was not their plan. It was Tomlin's idea. Tomlin
- 2:47Speaker 1: walked away from $ 16 million a year, which I'm going
- 2:50Speaker 1: to be honest with you.
- 2:51Speaker 4: You got me fucked up. Y'all going to have to
- 2:53Speaker 4: fire me in front of everybody, right?
- 2:56Speaker 1: $ 16 million? I will take a little bit of embarrassment.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But also- it was time, right? Shout out to him.
- 3:04Speaker 1: If that was, if it was a demonstration of a
- 3:07Speaker 1: measure of shame, I give him all the credit in
- 3:09Speaker 1: the world because you get fired for what happened on Sunday, right?
- 3:14Speaker 1: The only reason that we wouldn't think that he would
- 3:17Speaker 1: get fired for that.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Is because he works for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 3: And I, I have to imagine that the more I
- 3:24Speaker 3: sit with it, it does seem like it was kind
- 3:26Speaker 3: of on his own accord because he seems like he's
- 3:29Speaker 3: already got some TV stuff set up. Yeah. uh which
- 3:32Speaker 3: you know that doesn't happen like from sunday night to
- 3:34Speaker 3: monday morning uh or monday morning tuesday morning whenever uh
- 3:37Speaker 3: whenever that game was uh and we have seen reports
- 3:40Speaker 3: about maybe he wants to get into tv kind of
- 3:43Speaker 3: rumbling this season and now boom mike thomas done and
- 3:46Speaker 3: he's gonna go to uh seems like he's gonna go
- 3:48Speaker 3: to cbs for like at least a year and then
- 3:50Speaker 3: get back into it so salutes to mike man like
- 3:53Speaker 3: you got to go out on your own terms like
- 3:55Speaker 3: unfortunately it was uh a brutal way for your, your
- 3:59Speaker 3: term to end with the Texans just kind of running
- 4:01Speaker 3: all in your backyard in the second half of that game.
- 4:04Speaker 3: But like 19 years of no losing seasons. I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: now that like it's over, like we should be able
- 4:12Speaker 3: to kind of step back and say that is insane
- 4:16Speaker 3: because they have trotted out some crap out there. Basically
- 4:20Speaker 3: since Ben Roethlisberger had to retire. And the fact that
- 4:23Speaker 3: you've never dipped under 500 for all those years, even though,
- 4:26Speaker 3: I understand like fans getting tired of like, man, like
- 4:29Speaker 3: we're getting.
- 4:29Speaker 2: To the wild card. Nothing's happened.
- 4:31Speaker 3: We're clearly not a good team as our record says.
- 4:34Speaker 3: But the fact that he got to go out on
- 4:36Speaker 3: his own terms is great. And now we get to
- 4:38Speaker 3: see without like, you know, sadness of him leaving, what
- 4:42Speaker 3: the hell this looks like without him there. Because that's
- 4:45Speaker 3: like maybe the most interesting part of this to me.
- 4:47Speaker 3: How much like was he dragging whatever they had assembled
- 4:51Speaker 3: to the playoffs? Like how much of that was his
- 4:52Speaker 3: coaching acumen? How much of that? was the roster assembled
- 4:56Speaker 3: because none of us believe in them when they get
- 4:59Speaker 3: to the playoffs, even though they're scraping and fighting their
- 5:02Speaker 3: way there. I don't think anyone picked them to beat
- 5:03Speaker 3: the Texans. No one's picking them to beat like the
- 5:05Speaker 3: Chiefs when they run into them earlier towards the end
- 5:10Speaker 3: of Ben Roethlisberger's career. And now we get to see
- 5:14Speaker 3: someone else get to try to do this. I wonder
- 5:17Speaker 3: if it was a situation where they kind of wanted
- 5:19Speaker 3: to rebuild and I can understand not wanting to do
- 5:22Speaker 3: that because once you decide to take that plunge to
- 5:25Speaker 3: the bottom, there's no guarantee you're going to be back.
- 5:27Speaker 3: The fact that he got to keep that record, have
- 5:29Speaker 3: a respectable season, win the division, I think that's cool.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Salute to him for pulling that off.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Now it's time.
- 5:36Speaker 3: It was definitely time for both parties to move on,
- 5:38Speaker 3: but this and Baltimore, it's the closest thing you can
- 5:42Speaker 3: probably get to Tuscaloosa in the NFL, just given the
- 5:46Speaker 3: stakes of what's going on. Probably more so than Baltimore
- 5:49Speaker 3: because they have a quarterback, but Those Steelers fans, like
- 5:51Speaker 3: they're not going to tolerate.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Like if you start.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Going three and 14, five and 12, that's not going
- 5:56Speaker 3: to be cool for that long.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So that's going to be interesting because they I'm 45
- 6:02Speaker 1: years old.
- 6:04Speaker 4: They've never been terrible in my life.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Like just flat out terrible. Right. A two and two.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Bill Belichick put up a terrible season. on the way
- 6:15Speaker 1: out the door in New England, right? This franchise over
- 6:18Speaker 1: the span of three coaches, and it's also impressive when
- 6:21Speaker 1: you consider, and this is the thing that people don't know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: prior to Chuck Knoll, you could make an argument that
- 6:28Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steelers were the worst franchise in the NFL, right?
- 6:33Speaker 1: The original Rooney running the team was a little bit
- 6:36Speaker 1: more concerned with his primary business, which was the rackets.
- 6:41Speaker 1: to be talking about the football team, right? The 1970s
- 6:45Speaker 1: came around and the Steelers were relatively early adopters of
- 6:50Speaker 1: two things.
- 6:53Speaker 4: HBCU talent and supplements.
- 7:00Speaker 1: They got in early on these things, and they've never
- 7:04Speaker 1: been bad after that. They have not always been as
- 7:07Speaker 1: excellent as the rhetoric would have you believe. They had
- 7:10Speaker 1: a run of four Super Bowls in six years. That
- 7:14Speaker 1: kind of gives us... I mean, look, it was what
- 7:17Speaker 1: it was. Like, the 1970s were incredible. The 1980s were not,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and the 1990s were pretty good. I think it's probably
- 7:24Speaker 1: the fairest way that you could characterize this. But they've
- 7:27Speaker 1: never been terrible. And so for Tomlin... A, who wants
- 7:31Speaker 1: to be there while we just going to be sorry
- 7:33Speaker 1: for a couple years because they still going to blame.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Like after a while, it's like any other relationship, man.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It's got tired of shit after a point. It don't
- 7:39Speaker 1: mean he a bad dude necessarily, but they get, look, man,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I've been hosting this podcast here for eight years. I've
- 7:46Speaker 1: been talking into microphones for 25 years. Some of y'all
- 7:49Speaker 1: can finish my sentences. right some of y'all ain't here
- 7:52Speaker 1: no more because you just got a little sick of
- 7:54Speaker 1: my shit man we don't see things you know things
- 7:57Speaker 1: are a little bit different you start criticizing me for
- 7:59Speaker 1: everything that I do it happens because these are the
- 8:02Speaker 1: nature of human intimate relationships and the relationship between Pittsburgh
- 8:06Speaker 1: Steelers fans and the Pittsburgh Steelers coach is an intimate
- 8:09Speaker 1: relationship so if he were to go to three and
- 8:12Speaker 1: fourteen after they got sick and tired.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Of ten and seven Bruh.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 4: That's not an option.
- 8:19Speaker 1: If y'all going to do this, somebody else going to
- 8:21Speaker 1: have to be present for the bottom out.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Right.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Agreed.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But do you, like, how exactly does that work for
- 8:32Speaker 1: them on the bottom out? Because truly, and you tell
- 8:34Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong here, because you pay attention to
- 8:36Speaker 1: this on a much more granular and molecular level. Are they, like,
- 8:42Speaker 1: how are they, they're, they're not simply a quarterback away.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So quarterback plus what away?
- 8:47Speaker 3: Ooh, I mean, I think the, the game, I know
- 8:52Speaker 3: they beat Baltimore, but the game, the two games were
- 8:54Speaker 3: DK list. Yo, they do not have a whole lot
- 8:58Speaker 3: of like offensive firepower in general, which, which is what
- 9:03Speaker 3: kind of made some of the stuff that they did
- 9:04Speaker 3: so impressive this year, because there were streaks where, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 3: over the, really over the, the, the first like 10
- 9:10Speaker 3: or so games where, Points per drive, yards per drive,
- 9:13Speaker 3: they were a top 10 offense, even though it did
- 9:15Speaker 3: not look like it. It did not feel like it.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Every little piece is drugged to the mud, and you're
- 9:22Speaker 3: really fighting for your life to get five or six yards.
- 9:26Speaker 3: That's not really a sustainable way to live. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 3: we saw the Chiefs last year where they have an
- 9:33Speaker 3: offense that is good down and down, but there's no explosives.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Then eventually you kind of get dragged to the mud
- 9:38Speaker 3: and you get to the playoffs. You're like, no, no, no.
- 9:40Speaker 3: We actually need someone to come in here and actually
- 9:42Speaker 3: make some big plays for us to make this a
- 9:43Speaker 3: little bit easier. They don't have that. See, what I
- 9:48Speaker 3: thought was interesting about their offseason was when they traded
- 9:51Speaker 3: away George Pickens because I thought that, hey, if you're
- 9:53Speaker 3: going to do this Aaron Rodgers thing, why not just
- 9:56Speaker 3: throw DK and George out there, maximize this, give it
- 9:59Speaker 3: the best shot. you got because if you don't want George,
- 10:02Speaker 3: then his contract expires anyway and you'll still get the
- 10:04Speaker 3: third round comp pick on the back end. So they
- 10:06Speaker 3: kind of just made the George Pickens trade a year early,
- 10:09Speaker 3: which I thought was A little strange for having a
- 10:12Speaker 3: 41-year-old quarterback.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I know it's George.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I know it's George.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I will simply say that they knew him better than
- 10:19Speaker 1: anybody else.
- 10:19Speaker 3: They did.
- 10:20Speaker 4: And they were like... Ya basta. I've had enough.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And look, if Mike Tallman is saying I've had enough
- 10:27Speaker 3: of this, then I got to take him for his word.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Because that guy put up with some bullshit. And yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 3: this is big three. It's like AB, Le'Veon, Big Ben.
- 10:36Speaker 3: But there's guys past that on that team who were
- 10:39Speaker 3: some cantankerous personalities.
- 10:40Speaker 4: And those are just the famous ones.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:42Speaker 2: They're just famous ones. Exactly.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:44Speaker 3: So if Mike Thomas said, I'm good on the George
- 10:46Speaker 3: Pick and stuff, I got to take him as word
- 10:47Speaker 3: for that because he has buckled down through some real lunatics.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But man, it just never felt like they had a
- 10:55Speaker 3: real chance. And it kind of like, I think this
- 10:57Speaker 3: year was the best iteration of the post Big Ben
- 11:00Speaker 3: slop that they put together. Because when I was covering
- 11:03Speaker 3: the Jets in 2019, the Steelers came to New York
- 11:08Speaker 3: and they played Duck Hodges at quarterback.
- 11:12Speaker 2: For a full game.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I think it was Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges played
- 11:17Speaker 3: quarterback in that game. Remember, they never went under 500
- 11:20Speaker 3: during the stretch. I say all this to say, good
- 11:25Speaker 3: luck to the next person that steps in there.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Because I.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Think Steelers fans don't understand how high the standard that
- 11:34Speaker 3: Mike Tomlin actually set. Because I feel like if I
- 11:37Speaker 3: put this, if I were to take this group of
- 11:41Speaker 3: players and I stuck them with like the Falcons supporting
- 11:44Speaker 3: cast or coaches from last year, like, Hey, I don't,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to win 10 games. You know,
- 11:49Speaker 3: if you're some of these other guys that got fired,
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to win 10 games. But
- 11:53Speaker 3: that's what the expectation is set. And I mean, it's like,
- 11:57Speaker 3: I don't mean this like disrespectfully, but like Steelers fans,
- 12:00Speaker 3: like they kind of have like a little cult thing
- 12:03Speaker 3: going on where it's like, this is the Oracle and
- 12:07Speaker 3: it's the best. And it's always been the best, even though,
- 12:10Speaker 3: you know, They haven't always been the best. They were
- 12:12Speaker 3: the best a long time ago. You kind of got
- 12:15Speaker 3: to get that right. Like, I don't even know where
- 12:17Speaker 3: they go from here because it's been so long since
- 12:20Speaker 3: they've had to do a coaching search, since they've even
- 12:21Speaker 3: contemplated one.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And now.
- 12:25Speaker 3: you still have Omar Khan there who is in charge
- 12:27Speaker 3: of putting together this roster that we don't think is
- 12:29Speaker 3: very good.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Right. Who's going to pick the next head coach, it seems.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Well, my Pittsburgh question, and I've never had a great
- 12:37Speaker 1: answer for this because I had a decent answer for
- 12:39Speaker 1: it early in the tenure, but I personally didn't know
- 12:40Speaker 1: that much as it went, which is exactly how much
- 12:43Speaker 1: power does Mike.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Tomlin have in that building, right? Because the roster....
- 12:50Speaker 1: Very often, if not in most cases, the coach has
- 12:52Speaker 1: the final say on the rosters. The other guy, like
- 12:55Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan has the final say on that roster in
- 12:57Speaker 1: San Francisco. It's John Lynch's job to go get the
- 12:59Speaker 1: guys that he wants on the roster.
- 13:01Speaker 4: But quite often, that's the case.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Even examples of guys that you don't, I mean, Kyle
- 13:06Speaker 1: Shanahan obviously is like a luminary at this point. But
- 13:08Speaker 1: like Kevin O'Connell, for example, gets to say so.
- 13:11Speaker 4: On the roster.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So whose fault is it exactly that they've had the
- 13:15Speaker 1: guys out there that they've had?
- 13:16Speaker 4: I've never had a great answer personally.
- 13:19Speaker 1: For how much of that to attribute to Tomlin or
- 13:21Speaker 1: how much of that is above you? Because I was
- 13:24Speaker 1: thinking about what the coaching job is at Pittsburgh. And
- 13:28Speaker 1: on one level, Dominique and I were having dinner last night.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And it's like, yes, Dominique and I did have dinner.
- 13:33Speaker 1: For those of you who listen.
- 13:36Speaker 4: After my. That is the best coaching job. in the NFL, right?
- 13:43Speaker 1: Like that is, we have that conversation about college all
- 13:46Speaker 1: the time because there's so many different factors that go
- 13:48Speaker 1: into what a particular college job is. But I think
- 13:51Speaker 1: history has demonstrated with us, this is the job where
- 13:54Speaker 1: they'll give you a chance to work yourself out of
- 13:56Speaker 1: a bind. But it's also a job where through the years,
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's been very top-down in what they have wanted.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Chuck Snow won four.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Super Bowls, and upstairs is still telling him to fire
- 14:10Speaker 1: Tony Dungy as his defensive coordinator.
- 14:14Speaker 4: You're still going to get that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin came in as a defensive coordinator from the
- 14:19Speaker 1: Tampa Bay School of Defense and ran a 3-4 for
- 14:22Speaker 1: two decades there. in Pittsburgh, even though it evolved later
- 14:25Speaker 1: into something more of Tomlin's vision, but they got ideas
- 14:29Speaker 1: about how they should play football as a franchise, but
- 14:32Speaker 1: they're going to give you time.
- 14:34Speaker 4: To figure this out.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Like if you're young, you take, obviously you take this job.
- 14:39Speaker 1: If they give the opportunity, I am just very curious
- 14:41Speaker 1: to know who's going to be the guy that they
- 14:43Speaker 1: decide to take. Because with Tomlin, they got the word
- 14:45Speaker 1: on the street that he had had a great interview
- 14:48Speaker 1: with the Miami Dolphins, who unfortunately believe Mike Tomlin was
- 14:51Speaker 1: a little too hip hop.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin, too hip hop.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Well, hold on. Think about it this way. I talked
- 14:57Speaker 1: about this on the YouTube video. The Dolphins were like,
- 15:01Speaker 1: too hip-hop, but the Pittsburgh fucking Steelers were like, sounds
- 15:06Speaker 1: okay to me. We're not talking about he didn't go
- 15:11Speaker 1: to the Dolphins and he went and coached Grambling.
- 15:14Speaker 4: No, that's not what we're saying.
- 15:16Speaker 1: He went to Pittsburgh and they were like, I have
- 15:20Speaker 1: no idea what those guys are talking about.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I still don't.
- 15:25Speaker 3: When I hear him talk, I'm like, Mike Thomas, he
- 15:27Speaker 3: seems to be the guy who knows more soul music
- 15:29Speaker 3: than you might know rap songs.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I'll tell you a similar story on this. When I
- 15:37Speaker 1: was doing the show for HBO, one of the cool
- 15:40Speaker 1: things about doing that was I was in very consistent
- 15:43Speaker 1: communication with pretty high-level people there. It's a different game
- 15:47Speaker 1: when you're the host of a show in the world
- 15:50Speaker 1: that they're in there or whatever. And so I was
- 15:52Speaker 1: talking to him by a showrunner one day and HBO
- 15:58Speaker 1: had no idea that there was this corner of the internet,
- 16:03Speaker 1: those not just who observe sports, but specifically who observe
- 16:06Speaker 1: sports media and just flat out hate my guts and
- 16:11Speaker 1: think that I am like, I'm about to burn it
- 16:14Speaker 1: down with the revolution at every turn that I'm just.
- 16:18Speaker 4: The people at HBO were like, did you know that
- 16:21Speaker 4: there were these people who felt, they just couldn't believe it.
- 16:24Speaker 1: They're just like, are you talking about the same guy
- 16:26Speaker 1: that we talked to at work?
- 16:28Speaker 4: Like, he seems pretty cool from what I can tell. Like,
- 16:32Speaker 4: what are these people's problems? And that is how the
- 16:34Speaker 4: Steelers felt immediately off of that.
- 16:38Speaker 3: That's funny too. I was, I was parted with a,
- 16:40Speaker 3: with a friend, Jason Goff last week. And he was,
- 16:43Speaker 3: he was kind of on the same vein telling people like, Hey,
- 16:45Speaker 3: you know, you, You see Charles get slandered by all
- 16:47Speaker 3: this Adore stuff on the internet, but I want to
- 16:49Speaker 3: tell you, he actually does like black people.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's kind of his game. I can relate to that.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I can relate to that because I've been fighting for
- 16:58Speaker 3: my life for these past few months, man.
- 17:01Speaker 1: At least in that case, Goff understood, even if he disagreed,
- 17:06Speaker 1: why it was that they felt that way. The Steelers
- 17:09Speaker 1: or Tom Blue were probably like, I mean, I guess.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Like, how about the Steelers found that out way later?
- 17:18Speaker 4: And they were like, huh? Ain't that something?
- 17:22Speaker 3: It's so strange. And the Dolphins, I mean, look what
- 17:25Speaker 3: they've been involved in since Mike Tomlin was hired.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Nothing. Absolutely.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Dolphins, what they've been involved with. Maybe this is the
- 17:32Speaker 1: lesson for the Steelers. Well, the Dolphins have been involved
- 17:34Speaker 1: with since they decided that Don Shula going nine to
- 17:37Speaker 1: seven wasn't good enough.
- 17:38Speaker 4: And look, they knew who they were going to hire.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Like they didn't just do that and be like, oh,
- 17:43Speaker 1: we're going to see what it is. They went and
- 17:45Speaker 1: hired a dude who won two Super Bowls. And as
- 17:48Speaker 1: much as we all think that Jerry Jones is a
- 17:50Speaker 1: fool and Jerry.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Jones doesn't know what he's doing.
- 17:53Speaker 1: The case against Jimmy Johnson as a Hall of Famer
- 17:57Speaker 1: is that he went to the Dolphins and never got
- 17:59Speaker 1: a crack at.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Right?
- 18:01Speaker 4: Jerry's argument is anybody could have done it here. Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 3: I've grown on my feelings on Jerry, I guess, like
- 18:12Speaker 3: over the past few years, only because they're never bad.
- 18:16Speaker 2: You know?
- 18:16Speaker 3: And in the same way with the Steelers, like, I
- 18:22Speaker 3: think it gets lost when you have these things that
- 18:24Speaker 3: are relevant all the time.
- 18:25Speaker 2: We're talking about them all the time.
- 18:27Speaker 3: How hard it is to be relevant all the time.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I mean, we talk about the Steelers. They won nine
- 18:35Speaker 3: games with the Duck Hodges, Mason Rudolph combo. Kenny Pickett
- 18:41Speaker 3: was drafted 20th overall because the old general manager, Kevin Colbert,
- 18:44Speaker 3: he said, Basically, he said, oh, wow, you know how
- 18:47Speaker 3: Ozzie Newsom left the Ravens, Lamar Jackson, I'd like to
- 18:50Speaker 3: leave the Steelers a quarterback too. Here's Kenny Pickett. They
- 18:53Speaker 3: still won, you know, nine games, eight to ten games.
- 18:57Speaker 3: That is really, really difficult to do. And I think
- 19:02Speaker 3: we kind of get so used to these characters being
- 19:05Speaker 3: around and being subjects of discussion that you start to lose, like,
- 19:10Speaker 3: respect for some of the work that they've done and
- 19:13Speaker 3: they put together. I mean, you can look at Jerry Jones.
- 19:15Speaker 3: The Cowboys are probably one of the best drafting teams
- 19:17Speaker 3: over the last two decades.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and one thing we don't do with the Cowboys
- 19:21Speaker 1: is when they make a pick that we think is silly,
- 19:23Speaker 1: like that guard they took from Tulsa, who's like a
- 19:25Speaker 1: Pro Bowl-level guard.
- 19:27Speaker 2: You can play left tackle, too.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's like a couple other of those where
- 19:30Speaker 1: they make these picks that we think are silly, and
- 19:33Speaker 1: then it's like, oh, look at that.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. And, oh, man.
- 19:39Speaker 4: They got a 10-year starter and a quarterback in the
- 19:41Speaker 4: fourth round.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that they didn't even want, really. That one I'm
- 19:44Speaker 3: not giving them as much credit for, because they're.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Trying to get.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'll just say that they've been quarterbacked for the last
- 19:49Speaker 1: 20 years yeah with guys that have their shortcomings don't
- 19:51Speaker 1: get me wrong yeah but the last 20 years they've
- 19:54Speaker 1: been quarterbacked by an undrafted free agent and a fourth
- 19:56Speaker 1: round pick and there weren't a lot of teams that
- 19:58Speaker 1: would trade their quarterback situation for theirs.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Right you knew immediately that dac was good you knew
- 20:02Speaker 3: pretty immediately that tony romo was good um And the
- 20:06Speaker 3: idea that you can just kind of like just come
- 20:07Speaker 3: in and someone else is going to do it to
- 20:09Speaker 3: the same degree.
- 20:11Speaker 2: It's tough, man.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Like you said before, you got to take these jobs
- 20:14Speaker 3: if you get offered them. But can you imagine walking
- 20:17Speaker 3: into Baltimore right now as the new head coach?
- 20:20Speaker 2: That is a pressure cooker. Pressure cooker.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So let me ask you this about that because that
- 20:26Speaker 1: raises an interesting question. We feel confident because of the
- 20:30Speaker 1: last three hires that the Steelers have made that they're
- 20:33Speaker 1: going to look for somebody in their– early to mid
- 20:36Speaker 1: thirties and hope that they're making a two decade higher.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I don't think Baltimore can afford to think like that.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I feel like they are on a much more win-now
- 20:46Speaker 1: clock with the roster they have, and I think it's
- 20:49Speaker 1: worth noting, I don't think that you can assume a
- 20:53Speaker 1: 17-year career for Lamar Jackson. It's a different skill set.
- 20:59Speaker 1: It involves taking a lot more hits. He's not Cam Newton,
- 21:02Speaker 1: where he has been running QB power for all these years,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and Newton had the arc of a running back.
- 21:07Speaker 4: It's not that necessarily, but.
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know, a couple things start slowing down physically and
- 21:14Speaker 1: the decline could be a little bit.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Bigger based on that. You got to get this while
- 21:19Speaker 4: it's here.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 3: In a weird way, the back half of the season,
- 21:23Speaker 3: it kind of made me a little more positive about
- 21:27Speaker 3: what Lamar could look like long term because basically the
- 21:31Speaker 3: first month of the season when he was healthy, he
- 21:34Speaker 3: was on track to throw like 40 touchdowns again. All
- 21:36Speaker 3: his numbers were top three in the league. And then
- 21:40Speaker 3: since that Chiefs game, like week four or five, he
- 21:43Speaker 3: barely practiced the entire season. Wasn't really healthy. Wasn't doing
- 21:47Speaker 3: the bare minimum just to get to game days when
- 21:49Speaker 3: he could. And you, as the season goes along, like
- 21:53Speaker 3: obviously he's physically diminished, but man, the arm talent was
- 21:57Speaker 3: still there. Like the ability to throw down the field
- 21:59Speaker 3: was still there. Like we saw it in the Steelers game,
- 22:01Speaker 3: saw it in a couple of games before that to
- 22:02Speaker 3: close the season where you're like, okay, maybe even when
- 22:07Speaker 3: he can't move, like he's just developing such a good
- 22:09Speaker 3: thrower that your window there will be a little longer.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But it was a little harrowing sometimes to see when
- 22:16Speaker 3: he's out there hobbling and you're like, man, I don't
- 22:19Speaker 3: even want to think there because I don't want those
- 22:22Speaker 3: people who back in the day to be right.
- 22:24Speaker 2: But they're not right. I mean, they're not right because
- 22:25Speaker 2: he's won two MVPs, right?
- 22:27Speaker 1: He's so much better than anybody truly thought that he
- 22:30Speaker 1: was going to be. And I think he's better than
- 22:33Speaker 1: he gets credit for, even with the two.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Plus MVPs.
- 22:39Speaker 1: How about we start calling it three-time first-team All-Pros?
- 22:42Speaker 2: Three-time first-team All-Pros.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Because they did that thing. You remember when they did
- 22:47Speaker 4: that thing? He's so good. And look, those postseason moments, hey,
- 22:52Speaker 4: they matter. They're a thing. They've been an issue. I
- 22:55Speaker 4: do feel like this year would.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Have been interesting because he's gone a long way toward
- 22:59Speaker 1: rectifying that, right?
- 23:00Speaker 4: Like, that was how I felt about it. But, hey, hey,
- 23:04Speaker 4: you better get it done now. Like, as soon as possible.
- 23:07Speaker 2: As soon as possible, yeah.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Well, Before we go into this break, I was going
- 23:11Speaker 1: to talk about this black history thing. It's kind of
- 23:13Speaker 1: sort of black history, but it's not really black history.
- 23:16Speaker 4: But I saw something very interesting that I didn't know.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And so there's an interesting thing about the NFL, which
- 23:23Speaker 1: is the NFL now is kind of like a golden
- 23:25Speaker 1: age of black agents.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Like it's a lot of black agents.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I think that most of us would say the number
- 23:30Speaker 1: one agent in the game right now is David Mulgetta. He's,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know, you got him, you got Nicole Lynn, you
- 23:35Speaker 1: got other people. It's enough of them that we ain't
- 23:36Speaker 1: got to know everybody's name, right? And I did remember
- 23:41Speaker 1: seeing once Mulgedon was on Twitter and somebody asked something
- 23:43Speaker 1: about why all his clients were black. And he said,
- 23:46Speaker 1: because the white guys don't hire us.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Right? I know Nicole Lynn represents Bailey Zappy, H-Town. You
- 23:54Speaker 4: know what I mean?
- 23:54Speaker 1: But they're like, yeah, we can't get no audience with
- 23:57Speaker 1: them white dudes. The NBA is a little bit different.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And I saw something interesting that I just wanted to
- 24:03Speaker 1: find a way to get into the show.
- 24:04Speaker 4: And this is where I'm doing it. It's not really
- 24:06Speaker 4: black history, but you'll still feel me.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I'm following you. Okay.
- 24:11Speaker 4: So did you see this thing with Rich Paul?
- 24:13Speaker 1: He does this podcast with Max Kellerman that I don't
- 24:16Speaker 1: understand for any of the parties who are on camera.
- 24:19Speaker 2: That's what I feel about all these podcasts.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, but I don't. It confuses me on many levels
- 24:26Speaker 4: that this podcast exists.
- 24:28Speaker 1: But the podcast is there. And Rich Paul be out
- 24:30Speaker 1: here giving these takes, man.
- 24:32Speaker 4: And I mean, it's not a big.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Deal except for the fact that you're an agent. And
- 24:36Speaker 1: he'd be talking about what's going on with the teams
- 24:38Speaker 1: of his clients. And his number one client is obviously
- 24:41Speaker 1: LeBron James. And now, granted, we know they ain't really
- 24:43Speaker 1: got a whole lot of clout over there. And maybe
- 24:45Speaker 1: this is his way, right, of trying to flex or
- 24:48Speaker 1: exert anything. But he did this pod the other day
- 24:51Speaker 1: where he was talking about how they should trade Austin Reeves.
- 24:56Speaker 1: And it was in the name of how you build
- 24:58Speaker 1: around Luka Doncic.
- 25:00Speaker 4: But I think he wanted to send him to Memphis.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Yeah, he'd be the highest player on Memphis or some shit.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I was like, shut up, shut up.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's trying to move him to Memphis. Okay, right?
- 25:11Speaker 2: For what, though?
- 25:12Speaker 4: Why? I don't know.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Like, the details don't matter because you're not going to
- 25:16Speaker 1: get me to listen to Rich Paul talking to Max
- 25:18Speaker 1: Kellerman about the NBA.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I'm just 24 hours in a day. I don't have it, right?
- 25:24Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But I saw something very interesting that Austin Reeves' agent
- 25:29Speaker 1: was at Staples Center before Tuesday night's game, and he
- 25:34Speaker 1: pulled up on Rich Paul to have a conversation. Oh, no.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And apparently it was a five-minute conversation. And the difference
- 25:41Speaker 1: between the NFL and the NBA is that Austin Reeves'
- 25:45Speaker 1: agent is a brother named Reggie.
- 25:51Speaker 4: I don't know anything about Reggie.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I don't need to know anything about Reggie.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Clearly, I don't know Reggie's last name, right?
- 25:57Speaker 2: No.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I have to say, though, I started to look at
- 26:01Speaker 1: Austin Reeves a little bit differently when I found out
- 26:05Speaker 1: he had an agent named Reggie.
- 26:06Speaker 4: But it made me wonder, was it a case for
- 26:09Speaker 4: him where, you.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Know, white people got low self-esteem when it comes to basketball?
- 26:13Speaker 1: That only a brother named Reggie would be able to
- 26:15Speaker 1: see or recognize his talents.
- 26:17Speaker 4: That the white folks, it'd be a brick wall to
- 26:19Speaker 4: the white folks. They wouldn't be able to get it.
- 26:23Speaker 3: I don't know, but the whole thing, I don't even
- 26:27Speaker 3: like knowing who these agents are in the first place.
- 26:30Speaker 3: You know, it's just like, so why do you have
- 26:33Speaker 3: this podcast where you're talking about your client's team? Why
- 26:37Speaker 3: is another agent pulling up on you at a game? Like,
- 26:41Speaker 3: this has become a little bit too self-involved, guys. Like,
- 26:43Speaker 3: you guys are supposed to be in the background. You know, like,
- 26:46Speaker 3: this is an extension of the insider trend that's drove
- 26:51Speaker 3: me crazy where it says, oh, you know, so-and-so assigned
- 26:54Speaker 3: with so-and-so per so-and-so of this agency. I'm like, dude,
- 26:57Speaker 3: I don't even know all that. I don't need to
- 27:00Speaker 3: know any of this stuff. But, Shout out to Austin Reeves.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Shout out to Austin Reeves for putting money back in
- 27:05Speaker 3: the community. You know, we can really use some of
- 27:08Speaker 3: that these days.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I mean, I'll still note that Austin Reeves wears number
- 27:11Speaker 1: 15 because they are. Now, to be fair, Anthony Richardson
- 27:16Speaker 1: used to do that too.
- 27:17Speaker 4: But at the same time, Austin.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Reeves, I mean, like, you know, you got you a
- 27:22Speaker 1: Reggie or Reggie got you.
- 27:23Speaker 4: I'm not sure which. We'll be back.

- 29:57Speaker 1: we are back on the right time with Charles McDonald,
- 30:00Speaker 1: and I have not called you Charles Robinson yet.
- 30:02Speaker 4: That means I almost did it right there. I was
- 30:05Speaker 4: this close.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I was waiting for it today.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Hey, man, I'm sorry.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Hey, so, all right, I'm going to just talk about
- 30:11Speaker 1: this right quick. You saw the mistake Stephen A. made
- 30:13Speaker 1: on Tuesday.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I was watching live as it happened, and it
- 30:20Speaker 1: was an unfortunate situation, man. He was talking about Christian Kirk,
- 30:25Speaker 1: the wide receiver. And he accidentally called him Charlie Kirk.
- 30:30Speaker 1: And of course, you know, the internet, particularly those who
- 30:33Speaker 1: believe that Stephen A. has betrayed them in some form
- 30:35Speaker 1: or fashion, went to town on that. And I'm like,
- 30:38Speaker 1: for the grace of God, there goes I. The difference
- 30:40Speaker 1: between me and him is I just started laughing about
- 30:42Speaker 1: it immediately. But I mean, I've been calling Justin Jefferson,
- 30:45Speaker 1: Jordan Jefferson for years on this show. I don't feel
- 30:50Speaker 1: like I don't have the right to judge a man
- 30:52Speaker 1: under those circumstances.
- 30:53Speaker 4: But damn, tough break, homie. Tough, tough break.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that was one of those moments where I was like, man,
- 30:59Speaker 3: when I was younger, I might have tweeted something that
- 31:01Speaker 3: would get me in trouble right now.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Hey, man.
- 31:06Speaker 1: He's going through one of those patches, man. I mean,
- 31:09Speaker 1: maybe at some point he can get himself out of it.
- 31:12Speaker 1: He's going through it. Look, sometimes you the person that
- 31:15Speaker 1: the whole school made jokes about.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Right?
- 31:19Speaker 1: It happens so easily that you become the person that
- 31:23Speaker 1: everybody doesn't like.
- 31:25Speaker 2: You know?
- 31:26Speaker 1: The wisest thing I think that Stephen A did that week,
- 31:28Speaker 1: at least that appeared to be, it sounds like he's
- 31:31Speaker 1: a little too busy with politics to wade into that
- 31:33Speaker 1: situation y'all had.
- 31:35Speaker 4: With that woman at the Jaguars press conference.
- 31:39Speaker 3: That situation has blown my mind.
- 31:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 31:42Speaker 1: And so right fast, I want to explain this to
- 31:44Speaker 1: people who don't know what's going on.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I will not give you an opinion on it. I
- 31:48Speaker 1: will just tell you what the situation is. So Liam
- 31:52Speaker 1: Cohen was doing his press conference after the Jaguars loss
- 31:56Speaker 1: and a woman named Lynn Jones, who works for the
- 31:58Speaker 1: Jacksonville Free Press, which is the black newspaper in Jacksonville,
- 32:03Speaker 1: gave him a very, very, very heartfelt, encouraging message to
- 32:08Speaker 1: keep his head up in spite of defeat. And it
- 32:11Speaker 1: looked like he was really emotional in that moment. And
- 32:14Speaker 1: it led online to to a couple of discussions, one
- 32:18Speaker 1: of them being about this general decorum in the press
- 32:24Speaker 1: room and certain rules for behavior, we'll put it, that
- 32:29Speaker 1: people have.
- 32:30Speaker 4: There on one hand.
- 32:31Speaker 1: And then on the other hand, it was about Black
- 32:35Speaker 1: people and stuff. Is that the broadest way for me
- 32:40Speaker 1: to describe it?
- 32:41Speaker 3: I think that's the broadest way to describe it. And
- 32:43Speaker 3: I mean, I don't even really have an opinion on this.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I would recommend that you don't, brother.
- 32:49Speaker 3: No, no. My opinion on this is we are really
- 32:53Speaker 3: stretching the bounds of what needs intense discourse. I watched
- 32:58Speaker 3: that video and I was like, eh. Okay, that's unusual.
- 33:02Speaker 3: I've been to a lot of press conferences, don't normally
- 33:04Speaker 3: see stuff like that. But the fact that this has
- 33:06Speaker 3: been explosive for multiple days now, I'm like, whoa.
- 33:09Speaker 1: This is something that journalists... need to understand or media
- 33:14Speaker 1: people more broadly need to understand. We overpopulate the sample
- 33:19Speaker 1: on Twitter specifically.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Yes, definitely.
- 33:22Speaker 1: And the people who are not us follow a lot
- 33:25Speaker 1: of us, right? Like this is, it's a great place
- 33:27Speaker 1: to share media. Historically it has been, all right? Now
- 33:30Speaker 1: I think it's a terrible place for everything. But everybody,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I use everybody very broadly, but on the internet, often
- 33:39Speaker 1: has this misunderstanding, especially people who don't have big followings,
- 33:45Speaker 1: that everybody can see what you're talking about. So your
- 33:52Speaker 1: message may be intended for your colleagues, but everybody can
- 33:59Speaker 1: see it. And they don't necessarily know the rules that
- 34:03Speaker 1: you and your colleagues have, or what it is that
- 34:05Speaker 1: you're talking about. But you need to understand, everybody can
- 34:10Speaker 1: see what it is that you're saying.
- 34:14Speaker 4: And that's probably why you shouldn't. Right?
- 34:19Speaker 1: Unless you're ready for people from all these corners bringing
- 34:22Speaker 1: everything they have into a conversation that you are trying
- 34:25Speaker 1: to have, particularly if you're trying to not just have
- 34:27Speaker 1: it not just directed to a specific set of people,
- 34:30Speaker 1: but a conversation that you're trying to have within that
- 34:33Speaker 1: set of people.
- 34:34Speaker 4: You got to go to the private Facebook group for that.
- 34:36Speaker 4: You got to go to the group chat for that.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That out there, that's not how that's going to go
- 34:40Speaker 1: for you.
- 34:42Speaker 3: No. I mean, I don't use Twitter anymore, so I
- 34:46Speaker 3: didn't really see much outside of what people sent me.
- 34:49Speaker 3: And man, I'm seeing like soliloquies and long ass, like
- 34:52Speaker 3: thought out, man.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I'm like, yo, keep it in the group chat.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Because first of all, These people don't like us, you know,
- 35:00Speaker 3: and of course, and to see people complaining about, oh,
- 35:04Speaker 3: you know, this lady in this press conference, it's not
- 35:07Speaker 3: going to resonate.
- 35:08Speaker 2: With your audience, man. It's never going to resonate. They
- 35:11Speaker 2: don't care. They don't like us. So keep it, keep
- 35:14Speaker 2: it offline.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Again, I'm amazed by people who at once love the attention,
- 35:18Speaker 1: but also forget that other people are looking.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Because once other people are looking, it may not sound
- 35:25Speaker 1: the way you think that it's going to sound.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Right?
- 35:29Speaker 1: It might not land the way you think it's going
- 35:34Speaker 1: to land. But anyway, so I'll throw this out here
- 35:38Speaker 1: as we detour back into the other stuff. I am
- 35:42Speaker 1: told that you have a pro Nick Sirianni take.
- 35:47Speaker 4: And I want to be clear.
- 35:49Speaker 1: I don't think it's appropriate for me to pretend as
- 35:54Speaker 1: though there's something so crazy about having a take in
- 35:59Speaker 1: support of a man with a Super Bowl ring and
- 36:02Speaker 1: a career record of 59 and 26.
- 36:06Speaker 4: However, the hell are you talking about right now, bro?
- 36:09Speaker 2: No, okay, okay.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Let me start this off by saying, I don't know
- 36:15Speaker 3: what this man does, okay? Like, I don't know what
- 36:19Speaker 3: he does well here. But you just read it off.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Maybe this is like a little contrarian part of my brain.
- 36:26Speaker 3: It probably is a big contrarian part of my brain,
- 36:28Speaker 3: just considered no one else is really saying this in
- 36:33Speaker 3: defense of Nick Ceriani. But the guy, he's 59-26. Two
- 36:38Speaker 3: Super Bowl appearances. He's a hair away from winning the
- 36:42Speaker 3: first one against the Chiefs and then obviously blew him
- 36:44Speaker 3: out the water in the second one. He's got to
- 36:47Speaker 3: be doing something right. Like, he's got to be doing
- 36:50Speaker 3: something right. Because he's had a 70% winning percentage over
- 36:56Speaker 3: five years in the goddamn NFL. Like, something has to
- 37:00Speaker 3: be going right here. And look, I'm trying to put
- 37:04Speaker 3: this delicately. I've never been the highest on Jalen Hurts.
- 37:09Speaker 3: So to me, like, the fact that you're winning all
- 37:11Speaker 3: these games... is even a little bit more impressive. And
- 37:15Speaker 3: I know that they have like the all-star talent around
- 37:18Speaker 3: and they have one of the best Super Bowl, one
- 37:19Speaker 3: of the best defenses in the history of the league
- 37:21Speaker 3: last year that gave Patrick Mahomes the worst game of
- 37:24Speaker 3: his career, like probably up until this season.
- 37:28Speaker 2: He's got to be doing something right.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Like the football guy in me, I can't look at
- 37:33Speaker 3: all of this resume and say, no, you're just worthless.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Like you don't do anything. You're a loser.
- 37:37Speaker 3: But also I don't know what he does either because
- 37:40Speaker 3: when he was in Indianapolis, As offensive coordinator, he wasn't
- 37:44Speaker 3: the play caller. Obviously, he's not the play caller in Philadelphia.
- 37:47Speaker 3: He cycled through OCs. Cycled through some DCs, too. But
- 37:52Speaker 3: you hit on Vic Fangio, and boom, you're a Super
- 37:53Speaker 3: Bowl champion. Maybe it's the ability to just kind of
- 37:57Speaker 3: cut through all the nonsense where these guys are bickering
- 38:00Speaker 3: with each other, but he'll be bickering back at them, too.
- 38:02Speaker 2: So I don't even know if that's true. My Nick Siri.
- 38:06Speaker 3: My Nick Siriannon take is you've got to be doing
- 38:09Speaker 3: something right, man. Something has to be going well here
- 38:13Speaker 3: because you don't win this many games. How can you
- 38:17Speaker 3: be a loser and win like 70% of your games
- 38:19Speaker 3: in the NFL? That's the part that I can't fully
- 38:22Speaker 3: get myself out there on.
- 38:23Speaker 4: I say the same things about Barry Switzer.
- 38:27Speaker 2: See, that's a little too old for me. I don't
- 38:29Speaker 2: know that much about Barry Switzer.
- 38:30Speaker 4: No, I'm just saying Barry Switzer with the Cowboys. We
- 38:33Speaker 4: said the same exact thing.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Switzerland won a Super Bowl, NFC Championship game, you know
- 38:37Speaker 1: what I'm saying?
- 38:37Speaker 4: Had really good players. It's a.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Everything you say, and you said before we got on
- 38:44Speaker 1: that it was a contrarian take, and I disagree.
- 38:46Speaker 4: I think that it's a very logical take. It is a...
- 38:48Speaker 4: What's the homie's name? O'Kam... Akam, Akam, whatever his name is. Akam.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Akam's razor, yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go. There we go.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Hey, that's one of those you just always read it.
- 39:00Speaker 1: You'll never hear nobody say it out loud, right? It
- 39:06Speaker 1: all falls in line with what you are saying.
- 39:09Speaker 2: It does.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Comma, however, he gives clown. I'm not saying, it's hard
- 39:17Speaker 1: to say he is a clown, but he gives clown.
- 39:21Speaker 1: He gives, we're counting down the days till we fire
- 39:23Speaker 1: this guy.
- 39:24Speaker 2: He does.
- 39:25Speaker 4: And guess what? Might win a Super Bowl before that happens.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Dude, it might get bad.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Like this is still a really good team like the
- 39:32Speaker 3: framework at least like obviously you have some some serious
- 39:36Speaker 3: issues to figure out on offense but I mean you.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Look at defense you got issues to figure out on
- 39:40Speaker 1: offense a lot of which have to do specifically with
- 39:43Speaker 1: the quarterback.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Yeah that's that's the part that we still haven't like
- 39:47Speaker 3: quite gotten to because I think one of the most
- 39:51Speaker 3: fascinating things about Jalen Hurts to me as a player is,
- 39:54Speaker 3: I'm not sure people have caught on to the fact
- 39:58Speaker 3: that they've, I think Kellen Moore is a perfect example,
- 40:02Speaker 3: but they've run through all these different offensive coordinators over
- 40:06Speaker 3: the past few years. The offense ends up at the
- 40:09Speaker 3: same spot basically every single time. Now you have years
- 40:13Speaker 3: like where where the efficiency of the offense, like the
- 40:16Speaker 3: first year they made the Superbowl and they pushed the
- 40:18Speaker 3: Chiefs to the brink, like that offense was great. But,
- 40:22Speaker 3: you know, ultimately like it's the same core concepts. Like
- 40:25Speaker 3: you're running a lot of four verts, a lot of
- 40:27Speaker 3: inside zone, a lot of RPOs and no matter who
- 40:31Speaker 3: the OC is, no matter who the play caller is,
- 40:33Speaker 3: like it always kind of gets whittled down to that.
- 40:35Speaker 3: And I think Kellen Moore is like the perfect example
- 40:38Speaker 3: to look at this lens through because, Like that guy,
- 40:41Speaker 3: he was the OC for the Cowboys with Dak Prescott,
- 40:43Speaker 3: was the OC for the Chargers with Justin Herbert. Now
- 40:46Speaker 3: he's a head coach for his own team with New
- 40:48Speaker 3: Orleans Saints. You've got three different examples that show you
- 40:52Speaker 3: that how he called that offense last year for Philadelphia
- 40:56Speaker 3: is not how he likes to run things. You know,
- 40:58Speaker 3: he's a much more traditional like pro style. Like if
- 41:00Speaker 3: you go back and look at some of like the, the,
- 41:04Speaker 3: the early Dak Prescott stuff and Scott Linehan was their
- 41:06Speaker 3: offensive coordinator. Like that's where Kellen Moore is kind of
- 41:08Speaker 3: cutting his cloth. So, To me, it's kind of like
- 41:12Speaker 3: the Russell Wilson conundrum, right? You can run through all
- 41:15Speaker 3: these OCs, but ultimately the offense is going to play
- 41:17Speaker 3: out the same way. We're going to have to take
- 41:19Speaker 3: our deep shots and we're going to have to play
- 41:21Speaker 3: around Russell's limitations, but the problem here is I think
- 41:24Speaker 3: Russell was a much more talented and skilled player than
- 41:28Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts is. You're always going to be bogged down
- 41:32Speaker 3: to a degree just from a throwing skill point. Now,
- 41:35Speaker 3: it's not to say he's a bad quarterback or a
- 41:38Speaker 3: bad football player or anything, but It's kind of telling
- 41:40Speaker 3: to me that no matter who's calling your plays to
- 41:43Speaker 3: different levels of success, you still end up kind of
- 41:46Speaker 3: running this pretty simplistic offense. And if you have one
- 41:50Speaker 3: of the best defenses in NFL history, like you did
- 41:52Speaker 3: last year, or you have Saquon Barkley rushing for more
- 41:55Speaker 3: yards than anyone has in the total course of a season,
- 41:58Speaker 3: regular season and postseason combined, then yeah, you could win
- 42:01Speaker 3: a Super Bowl. But where people lose me, I guess,
- 42:03Speaker 3: is the idea that he is the driving force for
- 42:07Speaker 3: the winning just because He's the quarterback. Cause at this point,
- 42:10Speaker 3: like I've watched the past two seasons. It's not just
- 42:14Speaker 3: this season. It was last season too. When Kevin Petula
- 42:16Speaker 3: was not the OC and AJ Brown gave that sassy
- 42:19Speaker 3: ass answer. What's wrong with the passing game, the passing.
- 42:22Speaker 3: They had eight games last year where it's like, like,
- 42:25Speaker 3: you know, average to below average efficiency. This is supposed
- 42:28Speaker 3: to be a franchise $ 50 million quarterback. Why are we
- 42:30Speaker 3: not holding like to that standard? Sometimes I know that
- 42:33Speaker 3: the Superbowl helps a lot, but man, I would if
- 42:36Speaker 3: I was an Eagles fan, like I would want a
- 42:38Speaker 3: little bit more from Hertz, honestly, because your hamstring, your
- 42:41Speaker 3: hamstring sometimes.
- 42:42Speaker 1: But Hertz says the other thing in common with Russell Wilson,
- 42:45Speaker 1: which is the whispers of how his teammates feel about him,
- 42:51Speaker 1: which is an interesting discussion of the buttoned up, highly professional,
- 42:56Speaker 1: do everything you're supposed to do, black guy. does not
- 42:59Speaker 1: receive the same level of baseline respect as the white dude.
- 43:04Speaker 1: And I want to be clear, it sounds like you
- 43:07Speaker 1: be your own people, okay? Like, I'm not blaming this on,
- 43:12Speaker 1: I'm noting the difference between how the white guys and
- 43:15Speaker 1: the black guys are treated.
- 43:17Speaker 4: I'm not talking about who it is that's doing the treating.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Right for whatever reason those guys and maybe it's just
- 43:24Speaker 1: these two right to be fair but you don't hear
- 43:27Speaker 1: when it's a guy like like you don't hear anybody
- 43:29Speaker 1: talk about they don't like Kirk Cousins he seems to
- 43:32Speaker 1: be the.
- 43:32Speaker 4: Same type of guy as these.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Dudes are you know I know I know what I'm
- 43:36Speaker 3: getting with Kirk I don't I don't I don't have
- 43:38Speaker 3: to talk too much to him you know so yeah
- 43:40Speaker 3: I don't.
- 43:41Speaker 1: But but you know it's it's an it's an interesting
- 43:44Speaker 1: part in this I said last year And people got
- 43:46Speaker 1: really mad at me about it, but it's the truth,
- 43:48Speaker 1: and it's still borne out, Super Bowl notwithstanding. Every team
- 43:53Speaker 1: that Jalen Hurts has quarterbacked since he left high school
- 43:57Speaker 1: has been held back by his shortcomings as a passer.
- 44:00Speaker 4: And this was Alabama?
- 44:03Speaker 1: Alabama had to bench him at halftime in the national
- 44:05Speaker 1: championship game? This was Oklahoma where he finished second in
- 44:09Speaker 1: the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
- 44:11Speaker 4: So it's always hard and difficult to explain with him.
- 44:16Speaker 1: But they're going to have to figure out at a
- 44:19Speaker 1: point where how much higher do we need the ceiling
- 44:23Speaker 1: for our quarterback to be? Or how long can we
- 44:25Speaker 1: consistently expect that we're going to have the best roster
- 44:28Speaker 1: in the NFL or one of the two or three.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Best rosters in the NFL? Because the system is designed
- 44:32Speaker 4: for you to not be able to continue to do that.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Right, and I think some of their struggles this year
- 44:37Speaker 3: is where you've just seen... I don't want to say
- 44:42Speaker 3: guys take a step back, but really guys are just
- 44:44Speaker 3: getting older. This NFL shit ain't forever. You have small windows.
- 44:51Speaker 3: And also, it's like, dude, Sternell's been winning for five years.
- 44:54Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 44:55Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe he's okay. Maybe he's figured something out.
- 44:59Speaker 2: I don't know. But these windows are so small that.
- 45:04Speaker 3: The idea that you've even been able to maximize this
- 45:07Speaker 3: is such an incredible triumph.
- 45:12Speaker 2: To me.
- 45:13Speaker 3: The fascinating disconnects to me, and it's not just Jalen Hurts,
- 45:16Speaker 3: there's a lot of quarterbacks. We watch these games where
- 45:20Speaker 3: they're on national TV and we see the poor throw.
- 45:25Speaker 3: For this example, we see the poor throw that Jalen
- 45:27Speaker 3: Hurts made to close out that game against the 49ers
- 45:29Speaker 3: where he threw it in the triple coverage to a
- 45:31Speaker 3: completely covered Dallas Goddard. And you watch him make that decision.
- 45:36Speaker 3: You know he's a franchise quarterback. And then you immediately go, ah, Petullo,
- 45:39Speaker 3: the OC, like his fault. Hey, you know, that is
- 45:45Speaker 3: going to come back next year because it was there
- 45:48Speaker 3: the year before too.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Like these are trends that you can follow.
- 45:51Speaker 3: So what I get worried about with the Eagles and,
- 45:54Speaker 3: you know, how he's been so good at this, maybe
- 45:56Speaker 3: this concern doesn't even matter, is like as you start
- 45:59Speaker 3: stripping pieces, you know, as– A.J. Brown continues to read
- 46:03Speaker 3: more books on the sideline and decide that this ain't
- 46:06Speaker 3: for him. You know, maybe Devonta Smith, we've seen him
- 46:09Speaker 3: get frustrated sometimes too. You know, the offensive line is
- 46:12Speaker 3: getting a little bit older at tackle with Lane Johnson
- 46:15Speaker 3: and Jordan Mailata. You know, he's not, he ain't Walter Jones,
- 46:19Speaker 3: you know? So it'll be interesting to see what happens
- 46:24Speaker 3: there as like the pieces start to get stripped away
- 46:26Speaker 3: because I think there's some real fear that if it's not,
- 46:31Speaker 3: the Monstars around them, if it's not like all these,
- 46:33Speaker 3: you know, Pro Bowl-level players, because this is what it
- 46:35Speaker 3: looks like when they're there. And like A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith,
- 46:39Speaker 3: those guys are still in their prime. They're still in
- 46:40Speaker 3: their 20s, man. If this is what it looks like now,
- 46:42Speaker 3: what's it going to look like three years from now?
- 46:44Speaker 3: And I think that's where I kind of get concerned
- 46:47Speaker 3: for the Eagles because he is not a load-bearing quarterback.
- 46:49Speaker 3: He's good enough for what they have, but that's not
- 46:54Speaker 3: always going to be the case, like that they have
- 46:56Speaker 3: this or they continue to hit at this rate.
- 46:58Speaker 1: I kind of wish that football was a little bit
- 47:01Speaker 1: more like a regular job because can you imagine like
- 47:06Speaker 1: in some other job, the equivalents or.
- 47:08Speaker 4: The analogs to A.J.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Brown and Devontae Smith and then five o'clock come and
- 47:14Speaker 1: they get off work and they pull up to that bar,
- 47:17Speaker 1: loosen up that tie, undo that button and they ask
- 47:22Speaker 1: for a double. And then they just sit there and
- 47:24Speaker 1: they just start complaining.
- 47:26Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? Just start unloading.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Man, this dude today, this dude today. But it shouldn't
- 47:36Speaker 3: be this frustrating, you know? It shouldn't be this frustrating. Like,
- 47:40Speaker 3: you have a supporting cast that any quarterback would kill for.
- 47:46Speaker 3: And this place, like, this is all about, like, right place,
- 47:49Speaker 3: right timing. Like, this is not a slight against Jalen
- 47:52Speaker 3: Hurts that he's here. But I mean, how many quarterbacks
- 47:57Speaker 3: could you put in that offense? Like just one for
- 47:59Speaker 3: one swap. And you feel like you can blow the
- 48:01Speaker 3: roof off of anyone, basically. Because that to me is
- 48:06Speaker 3: one of the most interesting thought experiments that obviously you
- 48:09Speaker 3: can never do in the NFL. If we could just
- 48:11Speaker 3: swap quarterbacks like one for one, one for one, what
- 48:14Speaker 3: would this stuff look like? And I feel like I
- 48:17Speaker 3: know enough about the supporting cast and what I've seen
- 48:21Speaker 3: over the past few years to know that they're not
- 48:22Speaker 3: being maximized.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Both. Two games this year, they had a full half
- 48:29Speaker 2: with zero completions. Zero. Zero.
- 48:33Speaker 3: And going back to last year even, they have these
- 48:37Speaker 3: halves where they can't throw the ball at all. And
- 48:41Speaker 3: I don't understand why you can watch someone miss a
- 48:44Speaker 3: throw and then you have to say, well, no, he's
- 48:46Speaker 3: actually one of the seven to eight best quarterbacks.
- 48:49Speaker 2: In the league.
- 48:49Speaker 3: No, he's in a good spot. And it's been fun
- 48:52Speaker 3: to watch, and that's about it to me.
- 48:55Speaker 1: It's difficult to answer, but I'm going to ask you
- 48:57Speaker 1: one more question before we get out of here.
- 49:00Speaker 4: Who going to coach the Falcons, bro?
- 49:06Speaker 2: Man. I think they want John Harbaugh. That's what it
- 49:10Speaker 2: seems like.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Okay, so who go coach the Falcons?
- 49:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Oh man. I look, I want my, my top choice
- 49:21Speaker 2: is Kevin Stefanski.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Cause I, I, man, I, you just want the Shador
- 49:26Speaker 1: people to never get off your neck.
- 49:29Speaker 2: I mean, he's a two time coach of the year.
- 49:30Speaker 2: They had the best screen game in the NFL last year.
- 49:34Speaker 2: They were doing a lot of cool stuff. I don't
- 49:36Speaker 2: think that the guy, that guy's forgotten.
- 49:38Speaker 3: How the coach, because the two quarterbacks that they pick
- 49:42Speaker 3: didn't pan out for them last season.
- 49:43Speaker 2: So that's my number one, but who will they pick?
- 49:46Speaker 2: Probably someone a little bit underwhelming.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Uh, I mean, this Matt Ryan stuff, I gotta say, I, I,
- 49:53Speaker 3: I am very thankful for his time as a Falcon. Uh,
- 49:58Speaker 3: he's obviously you know one of the greatest players in
- 50:00Speaker 3: franchise history but like yo you're really just gonna let
- 50:03Speaker 3: him run the whole thing like the whole thing when
- 50:08Speaker 3: when is he coached like any scouting front office like
- 50:12Speaker 3: management stuff really he just gets to be in charge
- 50:14Speaker 3: of all of it that fast i don't know because.
- 50:17Speaker 2: It seems to me like his only qualification is knowing the.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Owner which is, you know, it being Matt Ryan being
- 50:24Speaker 4: Matt Ryan, right?
- 50:24Speaker 3: Like he's, he's, he's, he's probably the best player, you know, not,
- 50:28Speaker 3: not the best player to me, Julio Jones.
- 50:30Speaker 2: That's, that's, that's number one. Uh, but as far as like, Mr.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Falcon, like you're probably looking at Matt Ryan for that.
- 50:37Speaker 4: He's the most important player in the history of the franchise.
- 50:39Speaker 3: By far, by far. Um, But man, that's a lot
- 50:43Speaker 3: of decision-making. But luckily, it's the Falcons, so there ain't
- 50:46Speaker 3: going to be too many people expecting that much from you.
- 50:49Speaker 3: If you mess up, that's just kind of another day.
- 50:52Speaker 3: But man, I don't know who's going to be coaching,
- 50:54Speaker 3: but I know I'm probably not going to be happy
- 50:55Speaker 3: with it. I could see them doing... I want Stefanski.
- 51:01Speaker 3: I would take Harbaugh because I know he's probably going
- 51:03Speaker 3: to build a good staff. The one that's scary to
- 51:04Speaker 3: me is Clint Kubiak because... like nobody's a little concerned
- 51:08Speaker 3: that two years in a row, two different spots, your
- 51:10Speaker 3: offense just kind of hit the wall mid season.
- 51:11Speaker 2: And you can't really do anything.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Like when you watch Kubiak, Clint Kubiak, it's like, it's
- 51:18Speaker 3: like a, now that's what I call Shanahan's offense out.
- 51:21Speaker 3: You know, it's just like the greatest hits, but it's
- 51:23Speaker 3: not actually like, like strung together in a coherent way.
- 51:26Speaker 3: And that's kind of why they end up in these ruts.
- 51:28Speaker 3: It's like, Oh, we have another play action pass to JSN.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Well, let's do that. Let's do that.
- 51:31Speaker 3: But you know, I got more questions there. Like the
- 51:34Speaker 3: idea that he's to, Surefire candidate. I'm not quite buying
- 51:37Speaker 3: that one.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Bruh, I saw something where Diana had tweeted after Harbaugh
- 51:42Speaker 1: left Baltimore that maybe Baltimore would be excited about Cliff
- 51:48Speaker 1: Kingsbury and what he could do with Lamar Jackson. Yeah,
- 51:52Speaker 1: and I'm just like, wow, we are going to keep
- 51:55Speaker 1: doing this, huh?
- 51:57Speaker 4: He is a college offensive coordinator.
- 52:00Speaker 1: I think that he could be very good as a
- 52:02Speaker 1: college offensive coordinator. but he stayed getting fired if people
- 52:06Speaker 1: want to give him better jobs.
- 52:07Speaker 4: It's amazing.
- 52:09Speaker 3: I was a little surprised that Cliff got fired this
- 52:11Speaker 3: time because I did not think that he was necessarily
- 52:15Speaker 3: the problem.
- 52:15Speaker 4: What were they going to do this year?
- 52:17Speaker 3: I mean, someone should have just manned up and fired
- 52:20Speaker 3: the entire coaching staff, but that's a problem for probably
- 52:24Speaker 3: next year that we're going to run into.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Man, Cliff as your head coach? We already seen that.
- 52:30Speaker 2: We already seen that.
- 52:31Speaker 3: And that is one of those like, well, you should
- 52:34Speaker 3: have just kept John Harbaugh at that point and just
- 52:36Speaker 3: run it back.
- 52:37Speaker 4: Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You can't
- 52:38Speaker 4: come sail to the people.
- 52:39Speaker 2: No, you can't. You can't do that. And look, if
- 52:41Speaker 2: you want Cliff to.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Run the offense, I might be inclined to listen to that.
- 52:44Speaker 1: But I thought of Cliff just because you mentioned your
- 52:46Speaker 1: offense hits the wall.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah.
- 52:49Speaker 3: And that's what happens. And you know what can't happen
- 52:51Speaker 3: with Lamar Jackson right now? Because he might explode. Like,
- 52:54Speaker 3: you running out of ideas on offense.
- 52:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Like, see, that's another piece of this. Like, the bar
- 53:00Speaker 3: has been set so high For this job, Todd Monken,
- 53:05Speaker 3: who basically was the savior post-Greg Roman and revolutionized that offense,
- 53:10Speaker 3: got them throwing the ball in a more professional manner.
- 53:14Speaker 3: He said, at the end of the season, when John
- 53:18Speaker 3: got let go, I guess I didn't coach Samar well enough.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Bro, you got him an MVP.
- 53:23Speaker 3: You helped him do 41 touchdowns, four interceptions last year.
- 53:29Speaker 2: If that's not good enough, then... Dude, that job, it's Alabama.
- 53:34Speaker 2: It's Alabama.
- 53:35Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 53:36Speaker 4: They can't afford you to just go get a young guy.
- 53:38Speaker 2: No, no.
- 53:39Speaker 3: Like the youngest person you could probably get that the
- 53:42Speaker 3: city and the team would buy into, which I actually
- 53:44Speaker 3: think is kind of a good idea, would be.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Like Brian Flores, depending on what's going on with him.
- 53:48Speaker 3: Because that dude has no business being a defensive coordinator
- 53:51Speaker 3: still in the NFL.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I mean, I know what's going on there. But hey,
- 53:55Speaker 2: someone's going to have to bite the bullet.
- 53:59Speaker 4: I do not recommend hiring that man.
- 54:04Speaker 2: But he's already got the quarterback. He was right about Tua.
- 54:07Speaker 2: He was right about Tua.
- 54:08Speaker 4: He was right about Tua.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I don't think hiring that man is a great idea.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Some people are really, really good defensive coordinators. There are
- 54:20Speaker 1: parts of interacting with other human beings that None of
- 54:26Speaker 1: those Belichick guys. That's the thing with me. I am
- 54:29Speaker 1: out on all the Belichick guys. None of them have
- 54:32Speaker 1: worked out. The closest to working out is Bill O'Brien.
- 54:35Speaker 1: And what's his issue? Interacting with human beings.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Well, okay.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Brian Daybold. What's his issue?
- 54:45Speaker 1: Interacting with human beings.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Angry little elf sometimes. Brian Floyd is like The thing
- 54:54Speaker 3: that's kind of fascinating to me is when he got
- 54:57Speaker 3: the job, they were so bad that I'll never forget this.
- 55:01Speaker 3: Dominique was going on TV saying that it was unethical.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Like the roster.
- 55:05Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He and I were on this together.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:08Speaker 4: He did a great job.
- 55:10Speaker 2: They won 10 games year two.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:12Speaker 3: And nine games year three. And you know what they've
- 55:15Speaker 3: done since then? Like they've gotten worse since he left, basically.
- 55:19Speaker 3: Or they plateaued.
- 55:21Speaker 4: I'm just telling you. Or asking you.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Where's the person from that Miami time with a good
- 55:28Speaker 1: thing to say?
- 55:29Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Who are the coaches that worked with him who have
- 55:36Speaker 4: a good thing to say?
- 55:38Speaker 2: Oh, probably not many. Probably not many.
- 55:40Speaker 4: This is all I'm saying is.
- 55:43Speaker 1: I, if you decide to hire him, I understand why
- 55:47Speaker 1: you might.
- 55:49Speaker 4: I would not hire that man.
- 55:51Speaker 3: I would be interested to know what he's learned. in
- 55:54Speaker 3: the past four years since he left Miami, because he's
- 55:58Speaker 3: been with Tomlin who, you know, pulled him out the
- 56:00Speaker 3: ashes and basically resurrected his career and let him call
- 56:03Speaker 3: plays for the Steelers. And they had a really good
- 56:04Speaker 3: defense that year goes to Minnesota with Kevin O'Connell, who
- 56:08Speaker 3: I still think is one of the brightest, uh, offensive minds. And,
- 56:11Speaker 3: you know, does the same thing there, uh, as a
- 56:13Speaker 3: defensive coordinator where like, dude, they won a game with
- 56:16Speaker 3: three passing yards against the lions. Sorry, bring it up
- 56:18Speaker 3: to close the season on, on Christmas. Uh, I would
- 56:22Speaker 3: be interested just to know what he's learned, at least
- 56:24Speaker 3: in an interview, because it's so hard to just find
- 56:28Speaker 3: someone who you just, and for like the Ravens, like
- 56:30Speaker 3: this is their biggest problem to start with. You're like
- 56:33Speaker 3: someone who you just plow them in and you know, oh,
- 56:34Speaker 3: my defense is fine. Because like, who's the best player
- 56:38Speaker 3: in the Vikings defense? I don't know, but they're good.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Like they're really good.
- 56:42Speaker 4: He's an excellent defensive coordinator.
- 56:45Speaker 2: He's so good that you might think about saying if
- 56:47Speaker 2: we already have Lamar, We need to fix our defense.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Maybe we just throw him the keys.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Maybe we hire him as our defensive coordinator and pay
- 56:57Speaker 1: him lots of money.
- 56:58Speaker 2: That is true. His contract is expired, so he's a
- 57:00Speaker 2: free agent.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Hey, man, there's something to be said for the guy
- 57:03Speaker 1: that you can make the head coach of the defense,
- 57:04Speaker 1: which is not the same thing.
- 57:05Speaker 4: As the defensive coordinator. You know what I mean? Those
- 57:07Speaker 4: guys are just like, okay, that's your side of the room.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Not even talking to you about it.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever you say we're going to do.
- 57:15Speaker 5: All right, cool.
- 57:15Speaker 4: You ain't even really got to come to these other meetings.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:18Speaker 4: If you could just send me an email, that would
- 57:19Speaker 4: be fantastic.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:22Speaker 3: I got to ride for flow, though, especially this year
- 57:25Speaker 3: where there's nine head coaching openings.
- 57:27Speaker 5: Come on.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Someone's got to bite. Someone's got to bite.
- 57:30Speaker 1: I mean, it's the– No, they don't. You know damn
- 57:36Speaker 1: well they don't.
- 57:39Speaker 2: He's only 44, bro. What if things have changed? What
- 57:41Speaker 2: if they've changed?
- 57:42Speaker 4: They don't have to do anything right.
- 57:45Speaker 3: He apologized in a press conference to Tua when he
- 57:48Speaker 3: was the coach.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Of another team.
- 57:50Speaker 3: That's... Okay, that actually might be enough to say no,
- 57:54Speaker 3: because that was strange to me.
- 57:55Speaker 4: No one is obligated to do anything, and we ain't
- 58:00Speaker 4: even talked about the fact that he's suing them.
- 58:02Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 58:03Speaker 4: We ain't even get there.
- 58:06Speaker 3: Yeah, well, because I think if he was suing them,
- 58:08Speaker 3: he would have been hired probably last year or something
- 58:10Speaker 3: like that.
- 58:11Speaker 4: I'm not as sure of that as you are.
- 58:15Speaker 3: Maybe I'm off on this, but I just feel like
- 58:18Speaker 3: the results have been so overwhelmingly good.
- 58:20Speaker 1: I think that he has done an excellent job as
- 58:23Speaker 1: the defensive coordinator.
- 58:26Speaker 2: No interest. No interest.
- 58:28Speaker 4: Not for me. Not for me.
- 58:31Speaker 1: That is Charles McDonald, by the way, ladies and gentlemen.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Check him out at Yahoo Sports covering the NFL. My brother,
- 58:37Speaker 1: I appreciate you.
- 58:39Speaker 3: I'm going to put a headline up. Imani Jones doesn't
- 58:41Speaker 3: want black men to receive power.
- 58:42Speaker 4: Don't do this.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Don't do this.
- 58:44Speaker 4: Don't do this. I got you, Brian. Fight some power. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:49Speaker 4: So that's your plan, huh? Try to get them off
- 58:51Speaker 4: the Shador hunt.
- 58:52Speaker 3: That's right. This black man from Honduras, that's my guy.
- 58:58Speaker 3: That's going to be my beacon out of this.
- 59:00Speaker 4: I see.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Charles McDonald. Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining
- 59:03Speaker 1: us here on The Right Time. We do this four
- 59:06Speaker 1: times a week. Ryan Brumley handling everything behind the scenes.

- 59:21Speaker 4: We'll talk to you guys in a couple of days.
- 59:22Speaker 4: Take it easy.
