Latest / NewLife OnDemand / Janet Parshall Commentary - The Quicksand of Materialism
Transcript
- 0:01S1: It's been said that there is a growing conviction everywhere,
- 0:04S1: and especially among thoughtful people, that unless revival comes, other
- 0:08S1: forces will take the field that will sink us still
- 0:11S1: deeper into the mire of humanism and materialism. I think
- 0:15S1: we're sinking now.
- 0:16S2: Here to unpack present day issues from a biblical perspective
- 0:20S2: is Janet Parshall.
- 0:22S1: AI is no longer the future. It's here now. Christians
- 0:26S1: are having to grapple with how this technology will intersect
- 0:28S1: with their lives, if at all. And honestly, the people
- 0:31S1: behind the machines know just how to tempt us into
- 0:34S1: a deeper relationship with their technology. Consider the new gadgets
- 0:37S1: being offered to us as a way of simplifying and
- 0:40S1: streamlining our lives. Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Samsung have all
- 0:46S1: introduced new devices. Meta has a handheld device powered by
- 0:49S1: its muse personal AI agent. First, there's the Plod Note pin,
- 0:54S1: which is a wearable device about two inches long and
- 0:57S1: an inch wide, and it can record and transcribe meetings.
- 1:01S1: You pin it to your clothes, you put it on
- 1:02S1: your wrist, or you can wear it as a necklace.
- 1:05S1: In a world sinking deeper into materialism, clearly this will
- 1:08S1: become the must have accessory of the year. Then there's
- 1:11S1: Microsoft's Access badge again, a portable device that's parallel to
- 1:16S1: your typical work badge. But this new toy comes with
- 1:19S1: a touch screen, a camera, and an audio recorder. Additionally,
- 1:23S1: the device has fingerprint based security and a microphone. Next,
- 1:27S1: there's something for meta that sounds like a toy being
- 1:29S1: marketed to fifth graders. It's called the Muse Charm that
- 1:32S1: looks like a Tamagotchi handheld digital pet. In reality, it's
- 1:37S1: a pocket sized keychain with a two inch display and
- 1:40S1: two cameras. This must have new toy for grownups is
- 1:43S1: designed to declutter your inbox, make dinner reservations, or whatever
- 1:47S1: else you would like. The new muse AI personal assistant
- 1:51S1: to assist you with. Mark Zuckerberg says his new product
- 1:54S1: is always available to talk to you, and sadly, millions
- 1:58S1: have already downloaded the AI agent. And if you're looking
- 2:02S1: for a new pair of glasses, don't worry because AI
- 2:04S1: has got you covered. Meta is using their muse program
- 2:08S1: for eyewear and posted on a blog that all you
- 2:10S1: have to do is ask about a product on a shelf,
- 2:13S1: a flyer on a wall, or a long list of
- 2:15S1: school supplies, and muse can take action and it comes
- 2:18S1: in over 100 styles. These are just a few of
- 2:21S1: the shiny new things that the Giants who live in
- 2:24S1: the Silicon Valley want you to think you can't live without.
- 2:27S1: Forget potential violations of your privacy or the stealing of
- 2:31S1: data you don't even know is being sold, or the
- 2:33S1: corpulent data centers that raise your electric bills and corrupt
- 2:37S1: the landscape. The evangelists for AI will hard sell you
- 2:41S1: until you buy into the idea that you can't live
- 2:43S1: without their new gizmo. Buyer beware and be very careful.
- 2:48S1: The quicksand and materialism is swallowing us up. Those are
- 2:52S1: my thoughts. I'm Janet Parshall.
