- 0:00Hey friends, happy Wednesday. It is friendly.
- 0:04I'm so grateful you're spending a few minutes with me, and maybe
- 0:08you're on a walk or driving or just listening in a quiet space.
- 0:13My prayer is that this time would ultimately draw you closer
- 0:18to Jesus and help you walk more faithfully with Him.
- 0:21So today we're going to be in Matthew chapter 18, verses 6
- 0:26through 9, where Jesus is giving us a very direct warning about
- 0:30temptation and sin. And I believe it's one that we
- 0:35all benefit from hearing. And before I go into reading it,
- 0:38because it's got some, just like I said, direct language, it's
- 0:44going to sound harsh, but I will get into just why it's so
- 0:48important that we take this seriously.
- 0:52So it's titled Jesus Warns against Temptation.
- 0:56If anyone causes one of these little ones, those who believe
- 0:59in me, to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large
- 1:03millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths
- 1:07of the sea. Woe to the world because of the
- 1:10things that 'cause people to stumble.
- 1:13Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they
- 1:18come. If your hand or your foot causes
- 1:21you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away.
- 1:24It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to
- 1:28have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.
- 1:33And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw
- 1:37it away. It is better for you to enter
- 1:40life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the
- 1:44fire of hell. OK, so like I said, I will be
- 1:49going into why it is so important that this is so
- 1:52direct, but I do want to go into some context before.
- 1:56So in the passage prior, Jesus is talking about childlike
- 2:00faith, and you can go back and read it, but he's basically
- 2:03pointing to a child and showing us this is what true greatness
- 2:08looks like in the Kingdom, to be humble, to be dependent, and to
- 2:12be trusting. And if you think about it,
- 2:15children are trusting by nature. They rely fully on their
- 2:20caregivers and their parents. And in the same way, the more we
- 2:25trust our heavenly Father, trusting that he protects us,
- 2:30that he is our provider, that he gives us his best and his
- 2:34perfect plan and timing, the more our faith grows with this
- 2:38trust. And there's kind of a holy
- 2:41weakness here. It's not a weakness that comes
- 2:44from a lack of faith, but it's a weakness that says, God my
- 2:49Father, I need you like I cannot do life without you.
- 2:53And it's from that kind of dependency that it produces
- 2:57humility and sincerity and our genuine hearts.
- 3:02But then we go into the shift and Jesus, he gives a very, very
- 3:08serious warning to anyone and everyone who causes one of his
- 3:12children, ultimately believers, to stumble.
- 3:16And scripture goes into two two main ways that this happens.
- 3:21It could be through temptation or through neglecting or
- 3:25demeaning their trust, so taking advantage of them and just
- 3:30stripping them of dignity. And Jesus takes this very
- 3:34personally because to harm, influence, or even mislead
- 3:38someone who is walking in childlike faith, which is what
- 3:41he commends, that is not something that he's going to
- 3:45treat lightly. So I also want to just underline
- 3:50that this doesn't mean we're going to.
- 3:52We're supposed to walk through life passively or be naive.
- 3:56We do have an enemy who, like Scripture says, is prowling
- 4:00around us like a roaring lion. And he's consistently looking
- 4:04for ways to tempt us, to distract us and draw us away
- 4:08from God. And he will use people of this
- 4:12world to influence us and get us to turn away, try to get us to
- 4:17turn away. So we're called to grow stronger
- 4:20and mature in our faith while we still remain fully dependent on
- 4:26God our Father and be his child. So that's why spiritual
- 4:30mentorship really, really matters.
- 4:33Mature believers were called to watch out for newer Christians.
- 4:39You may hear this referred to as like baby Christians.
- 4:42But we are called to help them recognize temptation, to walk
- 4:47with them through life as they learn how to resist sin.
- 4:51Because growth, it takes time. And just like if you're training
- 4:57for a race, like a marathon or something, it's gonna have to
- 5:01take time and practice to get better and build that endurance
- 5:06and resistance. And so no one is going to grow
- 5:10strong just overnight. But it's through this
- 5:13encouragement and this accountability and godly wisdom
- 5:17that makes such a huge difference and can help you grow
- 5:20even faster. So I just want us to ask
- 5:23ourselves, one, if I've been following Jesus for a while, who
- 5:28is someone in my life today that I can pour into maybe that I can
- 5:32mentor or help motivate. And two, if you're newer in the
- 5:38faith, who can I learn from and be held accountable to?
- 5:44Because no matter how old we are, y'all, we all need mentors.
- 5:49I personally, I have several. I have one who has been my
- 5:53mentor since high school. I love her so much and we've
- 5:56gotten to do live together for several years now.
- 5:59And then I have one that's even older than her that pours into
- 6:02me. And now I also mentor someone
- 6:05who's younger and below me. But this is how the body of
- 6:09Christ grows in the faith. So it's so important that we
- 6:12don't forget about the importance of accountability.
- 6:16So then Jesus, he uses language that it feels intense and you
- 6:22hear cutting off a hand, plucking out an eye, like, OK,
- 6:26so how does that apply to our day and age 'cause I don't think
- 6:31he's telling us to do quite literally that.
- 6:33But he, he's not calling for literal self harm.
- 6:36He's using this strong imagery to make a point.
- 6:40We must take sin seriously because guys, sin does not just
- 6:45affect our actions and our physical, it affects our hearts,
- 6:49our minds, it affects our eternity.
- 6:53So when Jesus says to cut things out of our lives, he is
- 6:56referring to tools, resources, habits, routines, relationships,
- 7:03environments, these things that consistently lead us or point us
- 7:08to sin. So I want to be a little
- 7:11vulnerable here because I think it helps for practical
- 7:15application. But I'm going to give you all a
- 7:17few examples of things that I've had to cut out permanently or
- 7:22just for a time to kind of jog y'all's mind and make you think
- 7:26about your own things. So for me, social media, it was
- 7:30becoming a distraction and honestly, I found myself
- 7:34comparing to a lot of just posts and it's everybody's highlight
- 7:39reel basically. And so I asked the Lord and just
- 7:45felt convicted that I was wasting time on it too.
- 7:47And so I took a 40 day fast from it, really just to refocus on
- 7:52God and see myself through His eyes and His lens.
- 7:58I even cut out certain movies that I used to watch or TV shows
- 8:02that were not honoring him. In high school, I confess, I
- 8:07worked out to rap music. I would live to it.
- 8:09It made me feel really strong. But I noticed that it affected
- 8:15how I spoke and my own thoughts and so I had to change that up
- 8:19and cut out rap music and by the grace of God I don't listen to
- 8:24that anymore. My last one is I used to track
- 8:28macros a lot and use a scale to weigh my protein and just all
- 8:34that stuff. And I think it started off with
- 8:36good intentions, but it led to obsession and really just an
- 8:42unhealthy focus on my appearance.
- 8:44And so I had to cut that out. And none of these things I don't
- 8:48think were sinful on their own. Maybe the rap music, because I
- 8:51don't think blaring a bunch of bad words in your ear is good,
- 8:55but they were all leading my heart in the wrong direction and
- 8:59that's why I had to take them out.
- 9:01So the bottom line, the truth is plainly stated.
- 9:05Kill sin before it kills you. This is not something to toe the
- 9:10line on. Jesus is direct because He wants
- 9:13the message loud and clear. He does not want his children to
- 9:17stumble. So also just before we start to
- 9:21point fingers and in our head be like oh that person needs to
- 9:25hear blah blah blah or whatever. Scripture calls us to examine
- 9:29our own lives first and sin, no matter how we try to classify
- 9:33it, however big it is in your head or however, however small
- 9:37sin separates us from God and it does not belong in our lives.
- 9:41So the Bible is clear. I'm going to give you all 2
- 9:44verses that are just I think so straightforward and really
- 9:49helpful to hear. First John 36 it says no one who
- 9:53abides in him keeps on sinning. And then Romans 6 one through 2.
- 9:58Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound?
- 10:02By no means. So I just want y'all to listen
- 10:08to these scripture, these verses and reflect on it.
- 10:13Take a moment and honestly ask, is anything competing for my
- 10:17focus with God? Is anything keeping me from
- 10:20holiness and purity? What steps am I taking to combat
- 10:25those things? So as I pray, just come to the
- 10:31Lord right now and really focus your attention and your heart on
- 10:35Him. Heavenly Father, God, we bow
- 10:39down before you with open hearts.
- 10:42Would you search us? Would you bring to light
- 10:45anything in our lives that does not honor you?
- 10:48Illuminate it. Father, give us courage to
- 10:53remove and cut out what is leading us away from You, no
- 10:57matter how uncomfy it is. Lord, we want to grow and mature
- 11:02in our faith and pure holiness. Teach us how to grow in maturity
- 11:07while staying fully dependent on You as children with a childlike
- 11:12faith. Lord, may we protect one
- 11:15another, encourage each other, and walk in humility and love.
- 11:21Lord, this is a bold prayer, but it is a holy one.
- 11:25Would You break our hearts for what breaks yours?
- 11:31God, we do not want anything in our lives that separates us from
- 11:35You. We want lives that reflect you
- 11:38fully and we want to be transparent and we just, we give
- 11:44you everything. We love you, we trust you, we
- 11:48depend on you. We ask this, we ask this all in
- 11:51your name. Amen.
- 11:55Well guys, I hope you all enjoyed this episode and yeah it
- 11:59was, it was a good one for me to sit on too.
- 12:02So praying that the Lord speaks to you all through this and I am
- 12:07so excited for the next one. Have a good day.
