- 2:12talking to 27 year MLP official scorer, the one, the only Howie
- 2:20Carpin. How are you, Howie?
- 2:24Hey, great to be with you guys. Impressive.
- 2:27Well, you know my father's name and may rest in peace.
- 2:30My father's name was Howard. And I used to when my father
- 2:33used to walk into the room, I used to go Howie and my friends
- 2:38used to start cracking up and laughing.
- 2:40So you know, it kind of, you know, I miss it.
- 2:43I miss doing out my, my father was an important part of my life
- 2:46and his name was Howard. And and now I have another
- 2:48Howie. So I had to do the Howie.
- 2:50So how are you, Mr. Howie? Doing well.
- 2:54Thank you right to be with you guys.
- 2:56Well, you look good and, but before we get into your, your
- 2:59career and what you're doing right now, I, I have to ask you,
- 3:03how old are you? I have 7171.
- 3:06You're 71 and you've been in, you've been in baseball,
- 3:09involved in baseball for 27 years.
- 3:12No longer 46 years. 46 that's impressive.
- 3:16That's impressive. That's that's half.
- 3:18That's more than half of your life.
- 3:22It's a long, it's a lot of ball games and I saw a Java his whole
- 3:25career. So you know, I saw him a lot of
- 3:27times and made a lot of great relationships over the years.
- 3:32It's been very special. Well, it's, it's pretty special
- 3:35when you hear that you've been involved with baseball and the
- 3:38MLB for over 40 years. And I, I want to get into what
- 3:42you've been doing over the last 27 and you've been official
- 3:47scorer for that long. And what does an official scorer
- 3:50do when it comes to the MLB? Well, to put it simply, you
- 3:54create the box score, you're involved with the stats,
- 3:57everything except one loss. You know, you make you make the
- 4:03subjective judgement calls on hits and errors, pass balls and
- 4:07wild pitches, earned runs and unearned runs, and you're
- 4:12responsible for a whole bunch of things and end up in the box
- 4:15score. And then in baseball, it's taken
- 4:18pretty seriously. You know, the stats are kind of
- 4:21like sacred almost. So you have a big part in in how
- 4:25things are played out. And sometimes you actually
- 4:28affect the players contracting in indirect ways.
- 4:31And it's a big responsibility. It's a lot of pressure.
- 4:34We call it the hot seat, especially in New York, where
- 4:37they take their baseball very seriously and we get to work.
- 4:40Two teams in New York. Not a lot of not a lot of cities
- 4:44can claim that. LA, you know, you got the Angels
- 4:46and the Dodgers and you know, Chicago, you have the Cubs and
- 4:49the White Sox and obviously the Yankees and Mets in New York.
- 4:53And right now I'm senior scorer in New York.
- 4:56And, you know, it's a big responsibility, but I enjoy it
- 4:59immensely. It's it's pressurized at times.
- 5:03You know, it depends on the circumstances of a game.
- 5:06But you know, I've seen a lot of baseball over the years.
- 5:08And to this day, I still enjoy good.
- 5:12I'm privileged to get in the ballpark for free.
- 5:15You know, I don't have to pay. And I get a prime seat up in the
- 5:18press box and interact with a lot of great people.
- 5:22So you're Anthony Volpe's best friend?
- 5:23Is that what you're telling me? Not always.
- 5:29Well, he's going to need a lot of friends because he was
- 5:31absolutely putrid this year. Speaking of, another putrid
- 5:34player is Chuck Knobloch. So over the years, the Yankees
- 5:37have had interesting players. Oh, by the way, we're Gold Glove
- 5:41winners and then became just absolutely horrible defenders.
- 5:45I just had to add that one. So go ahead, Speedy.
- 5:48I was going to ask, you mentioned that like a lot of the
- 5:51players having being an incentive value in their
- 5:53contract, one extra hit, one extra, I guess a different type
- 5:56of out for a pitcher, stuff like that kind of thing.
- 5:58Like any personal like experiences with like stories
- 6:02that you could tell over the years of like maybe players that
- 6:03have kind of up to you or managers and maybe it came up to
- 6:06you with any kind of instances like that.
- 6:08Well, how many hours do you have?
- 6:09I've got a lot of experiences, but I'll give you some of the
- 6:13main ones over the years. Speaking of Maine, I don't know
- 6:16if you guys remember a guy named Brent Maine.
- 6:19Jabba may know him. He was a backup catcher for the
- 6:22Royals and the Mets, and it was a interleague game in 2002 at
- 6:27Chase Stadium. Royals and Mets and Maine came
- 6:32up with the bases loaded and two out.
- 6:36Yeah, it was 2 out. And he's not exactly a speed
- 6:40demon on the bases, so he hit a like a swinging bunt toward
- 6:45third and he falls down coming out of the batter's box.
- 6:49Edgardo Alfonso was the 3rd baseman that day.
- 6:53Now he could have simply gloved the ball and rolled it to 1st
- 6:57and he would have had mane by two steps.
- 7:00But for some strange reason he tries to play it barehanded like
- 7:04it was what we call a do or die play.
- 7:06So I called it an E5, no RBI because it was 2 out and he
- 7:11would have had them at first. So apparently after the game,
- 7:17they they called me, the Royals called me up in the press box,
- 7:21called me on the press box phone.
- 7:24And the public relations director got on the phone and
- 7:28said, did you look at the call? And I said yeah.
- 7:31And I said I'm not changing it. And then they put Brent Main on
- 7:33the phone and he wasn't exactly friendly, let's put it that way.
- 7:39He got on the phone and they the first words out of his mouth
- 7:43came in a very angry tone. How the F can you make that
- 7:48effing call? And I told him I said, look you,
- 7:51you fell down coming out-of-the-box.
- 7:54And he didn't deny it. And then he got mad at me for
- 7:57another call that didn't even involve him in the game.
- 8:00It was another Royals batter with a line drive to MO Vaughn
- 8:05at first who simply had a pick up his arms to catch it and went
- 8:10off his glove into right field. He didn't even have to leave the
- 8:12ground. I called that an error because
- 8:15that's a Major League first baseman.
- 8:16He's got to make that play. And then he goes, how how can
- 8:20you make that F and call? And I said, well, in my
- 8:22judgement, that's an error. And then he said that's horse,
- 8:26you know, crap judgement. And then he slammed down the
- 8:30phone. So I thought the incident was
- 8:31over. Anyway, in those days in 2002,
- 8:35we had to make out the box score manually.
- 8:38Now we do it by computer, the box score form, which ends up as
- 8:42the box score that you see in the papers.
- 8:45So after it was done, my job was to take it down to the PR office
- 8:50where they would fax it to Elias.
- 8:53Elias Sports Bureau keeps the stats.
- 8:56And I ran into Gary Cohn on the way toward the office and he was
- 9:00working radio that day. Apparently he was all over me
- 9:03for the call. And we got into a little
- 9:05argument over it. And then I I just squashed it
- 9:08right then and there. I said, look, I got to go.
- 9:10So I went down the office, gave him the form and went home that
- 9:13night. And one of my best friends
- 9:15called me on the phone. He said, you know, Gary was all
- 9:19over you on the radio today. I said, so that's his
- 9:22prerogative. Anyway, I thought it was over.
- 9:24That was a Sunday. Then on Monday, a guy named Bob
- 9:28Raisman, who writes the media column for the Daily News,
- 9:31called me up. He got wind of the incident
- 9:34because my mentor was there that day, Bill Shannon, who did a lot
- 9:39of games for over 35 years, and he was the one that got me the
- 9:42job. But when he wasn't scoring a
- 9:44game, he would he would go down the locker room as like, you
- 9:48know, like a Stringer for The Associated Press.
- 9:50Apparently the players all surrounded him that day because
- 9:54they thought he was doing the game.
- 9:56But it turns out that Bob Raisman got wind of the
- 10:00incident, called me up. You know, we interviewed me
- 10:03about 10 minutes. I gave my comments.
- 10:06I said to my wife, I'm going to get my name in the Daily News
- 10:09tomorrow. And then I pick up the paper on
- 10:12Tuesday. And it was the column was all
- 10:14about that incident, the whole a whole page column about that
- 10:18incident where they have in my scrapbook that that was probably
- 10:21one of the most notable things. And then there was the, you
- 10:24know, pop up with a Rod and Jeter in 2005 against the
- 10:29Orioles. Jabba wasn't there yet.
- 10:32That was you, so I remember that.
- 10:35Yeah, you remember that and I do remember, in fact, ESPN did a
- 10:38feature on me last year for SportsCenter and they showed
- 10:42that play. I first called error on a rod
- 10:45because, you know, I only had the front angle of it from from
- 10:48the press box and then somebody came over and said you may want
- 10:52to look at it because Jeter bumped into his back and made
- 10:55him drop the ball. Now in the official scoring
- 10:58rules, if that happens, like those collisions in the outfield
- 11:01where a guy's under the ball and the other guy runs into him and
- 11:04knocks the ball loose, the guy who makes contact gets the
- 11:08error. So I had to change that about an
- 11:11inning later to E6. And when the report that was the
- 11:15height of the A Rod Jeter feud. You know, it was really when
- 11:18things really boiled over. And when the reporters asked
- 11:22Jeter about it, he didn't know that the change was made.
- 11:25And he, let's put it this way, he was not happy about it.
- 11:28I happened to go downstairs to the locker room that day, you
- 11:32know, just to get some clarity on the play.
- 11:35And, you know, I heard Jeter called me over to his locker.
- 11:39He was already dressed. And we talked about it.
- 11:41And I said, look at the video. And then as as I left the locker
- 11:45room to go upstairs at the old stadium, the elevator was by the
- 11:50entrance where the players would go out, you know, into the
- 11:53parking lot. And I'm standing by the elevator
- 11:56and E Jeter comes out with his suitcase, or is it, you know,
- 11:59his roller bag. And he calls me over again in
- 12:01front of all the reporters because we were a bunch of us
- 12:04waiting to go upstairs. And he he asked about it again.
- 12:07I told him, look at the video. You bumped into him.
- 12:09I said, those are the rules. I have to abide by that.
- 12:13Then that became a whole big story.
- 12:14The next day, one of the one of the reporters wrote that Jeter
- 12:17Butten holed me up against the wall, which wasn't true.
- 12:20There was no physical contact. But our relationship got
- 12:25strained for a while. And then, you know, things, you
- 12:27know, cleared up a number of years later.
- 12:29But Jeter was a guy who, you know, if he, he thought you
- 12:33crossed him or whatever, you know, he, he was not a forgiving
- 12:37type. And our relationship was
- 12:39different after that call. But look, I'm doing my job, you
- 12:43know, I mean, I, I understand where the players are coming
- 12:46from on certain things. I mean, you know, I, I was a
- 12:49player in college. I played Division Three.
- 12:51I played ten years in the Bronx Sandlocks.
- 12:54You know, I wasn't a Major League talent, but I knew what
- 12:57it took to make a play. So that kind of helps me in my
- 13:00job. And, you know, having done it
- 13:03for 27 years, I think I'm doing something right.
- 13:05They didn't get rid of me, so I'm still here.
- 13:08And, you know, I enjoy it to this day.
- 13:10But those are just some of the things that can happen.
- 13:13The confrontations are not as as prevalent as they used to be now
- 13:17because they have what they call an appeal system where you can,
- 13:21the players actually can file an appeal to get a scoring call
- 13:25overturned. So now there's a committee that
- 13:27rules on those appeals. It's a bunch of former players,
- 13:30three of them, in fact. Dan Otero, former pitcher,
- 13:34Gregor Blanco, former outfielder and Raja Davis, former outfit
- 13:40who hit that home run in the 2016 World Series in Game 7 for
- 13:44Cleveland, say. I've gotten a relationship with
- 13:47him directly as we talk a lot about the calls.
- 13:50But you know it, it's an interesting concept what goes on
- 13:54with the scoring because so many people take it seriously.
- 13:57Fans, players and baseball personnel included.
- 14:02Hi, there's got to be and you've done it a long time and I this
- 14:06is a loaded question, but we all have like those special games,
- 14:10whether it's moments, whether it's like, you know, there's got
- 14:13to be one game or one situation that stands out to you the most
- 14:18in all your years. And the game can it can be good
- 14:22or bad reasons for it, But tell us about one game or one
- 14:26situation where it just for good or bad, you just can't ever
- 14:29forget it. Well, I've done a number of very
- 14:33famous games. I did the final game at Chase
- 14:35Stadium in 2008. I did Rodger Clemens 300th win
- 14:39at Yankee Stadium when he also had got his four thousandth
- 14:43strikeout. And I did a I've done 2 combined
- 14:47no hitters by the Astros over the Mets, actually 19 years
- 14:51apart. But probably the, the most
- 14:53memorable game, memorable game I'll remember is Game 4, the
- 14:572001 World Series when Tino Martinez tied it up in the
- 15:02bottom of the ninth. The stadium job of that night
- 15:06was literally shaking the building, the foundation, You
- 15:10could feel it. It was almost like a mild
- 15:12earthquake. The stadium was rocking, I mean,
- 15:15literally rocking at that point, and I'll never forget it.
- 15:19And then Jeter ended the game in the bottom of extra innings.
- 15:23You know, when he became Mr. November because the game went
- 15:25up past midnight. It was October 31st, the date of
- 15:28the game. And then when he ended the game,
- 15:31the same thing happened. The place was just erupted.
- 15:34It was an incredible experience that I'll never forget.
- 15:37That's probably the most notable game I can remember.
- 15:40But I've done, I've done a lot of, you know, wacky games in, in
- 15:43my career too. I mean, I had a 19 inning Red
- 15:46Sox, Yankee game that went over 7 hours.
- 15:49So, you know, that's, that's the beauty of it.
- 15:52You never know what you're going to get on a certain night.
- 15:55And then there's nights where you see something that you never
- 15:57saw before. I had to get, I did a playoff
- 16:00game last year, yeah 20/20/24 against Cleveland where we had
- 16:06two obstruction calls on the same play and that had never
- 16:10happened in a playoff game. You know, with the scoring with
- 16:13that was a little confusing as to someone gets an error on the
- 16:17play, but it happened on the same guy.
- 16:19Tim Hill was the pitcher. He obstructed the runner twice,
- 16:23but he only luckily only got 1 error out of it.
- 16:26But you know who where he gets the error, where the real
- 16:29obstruction was, you know, the umpires had the huddle and and
- 16:32make that knife. I was told that that was the
- 16:34first time ever that there were two obstructions on the same
- 16:37play in a postseason game. So there's a lot of crazy things
- 16:41that happen that are really not accounted for in the rule book,
- 16:44and sometimes you just have to use your common sense to make a
- 16:47call. We are talking to 27 year MLB
- 16:50official scorer Howie Carpen. He's written over 14 sports
- 16:55books and he works for SiriusXM Radio and Kinder's Corner.
- 17:00You know Howie, there's a lot when it when it comes to
- 17:03baseball on the transition. You've been around baseball for
- 17:06over 40 years so you see it at all.
- 17:08And now the transition from Bud Selig to Manford and, and
- 17:13Manford could be gone in 2026. He says he's going to retire.
- 17:16But with all these different rule changes and the transition
- 17:20of the rule changes, do you like these rule changes?
- 17:23And do you think baseball should be tampered with the way it has
- 17:27been? I don't like the runner on
- 17:29second rule and extra innings to start.
- 17:32I'd like to see a change in that rule to at least play 3 real
- 17:36extra innings. And then if you get to like the
- 17:3813th, 14th inning, then start using that runner as I told you
- 17:43I would, did a 19 inning Red Sox, Yankee game.
- 17:46And as much as I love baseball, it's a passion.
- 17:49The games can get draggy when they they go into those extended
- 17:53extra innings when nothing's happening.
- 17:55Now you had that 18 inning game in the World Series just
- 17:58completed. You know that that that's real
- 18:00drama. I mean, that keeps you, you
- 18:02know, captivated for the time, but for a regular season game,
- 18:06it can really drag, you know, when nothings happening.
- 18:09But that, you know, I, I don't like it that it occurs in the
- 18:1210th. I'd like to see it, you know,
- 18:14change to at least play 3 real extra innings or 4 or whatever
- 18:18and then start to use that in the later innings.
- 18:21The pitch clock has been beneficial.
- 18:23I mean, it's hurts. It hurts it some of the pitchers
- 18:27in a way or or the hitters that they can't step out-of-the-box
- 18:30so much to upset a pitcher's rhythm at times, which was a
- 18:34strategic part of the game. I remember I did the 2022 Wild
- 18:37Card Series with the Mets and Padres.
- 18:40I did the deciding game three and the Padre hitters kept
- 18:44stepping out-of-the-box against Chris Bassett because they knew
- 18:47they would upset his rhythm. Bob Melvin was the manager of
- 18:50the Padres. He had Bassett the year before
- 18:53with the A's. And he kind of knew something
- 18:55about Bassett to upset his rhythm.
- 18:58And I never saw the Padre pitters step out so much.
- 19:01You can't do that anymore. But it does speed up the game.
- 19:04I I understand some of the rule changes, but I'm a
- 19:06traditionalist. You know, I go back to the old
- 19:09days without the designated hitter, you know, for both
- 19:12leagues where pitchers battered all the time.
- 19:14And I realized these changes had to be made.
- 19:17And, and it goes along with the territory.
- 19:19I mean, as scorers, our job has changed, you know, with that,
- 19:22along with those changes, with the rules.
- 19:25So look, changes are going to happen.
- 19:26You can't and nothing you can do to prevent it.
- 19:28You have to adapt. And I've tried to adapt over the
- 19:31years as well. So I want to ask about you work
- 19:34for Kiner's Corner, Ralph Kiner, obviously one of the best
- 19:36baseball players and one of the best broadcasters, like
- 19:39collectively all around like impacting the game so much.
- 19:42I remember when I started watching baseball in around
- 19:432005, like he was in the SNY booth like after when he was
- 19:48older too. And I always loved seeing him.
- 19:50Do you have any really cool stories of Ralph that you know?
- 19:54I didn't really interact with Ralph a whole lot while he was
- 19:57still broadcasting. I was early in my career.
- 20:00And, you know, his later years, the last few years when I first
- 20:04started scoring, but I do remember when he would come into
- 20:08the press room after a game, you know, he was so revered that
- 20:13people would would go over to him and, you know, offer to get
- 20:17him a drink from the bar or just, you know, they wanted to
- 20:21do things for him. He was so well liked.
- 20:23He was a really nice man. I mean, you know, very, very
- 20:26cordial, very well liked, revered by all the people that
- 20:30worked there. And he treated everybody the
- 20:33same. He didn't really, you know,
- 20:34treat anybody any special. So that that's basically what I
- 20:39remember about him. I'm more in tune with the, you
- 20:42know, more recent guys like Ron Darling, Gary Cohn and Keith
- 20:46Hernandez. You know, they, they like, you
- 20:48know, we have a good relationship going, you know,
- 20:51even though I had that incident with Gary all those years ago,
- 20:54but you know, we've, you know, mended the ways and, and they
- 20:59love talking about me on the games.
- 21:00They mentioned me a lot during the game.
- 21:02I remember. That funny?
- 21:05Sorry. I said I remember that a lot
- 21:06like our scorer Howie has this like I remember here again, now
- 21:10I get the interview. It's.
- 21:12Cool. You know, you know, it's funny
- 21:13when they mentioned me on a game, my phone starts to light
- 21:16up with texts from my friends and said, oh, you got a shout
- 21:19out on TV and I'm not looking at the phone while the game's going
- 21:22on, but I'll check in between innings.
- 21:25And, you know, we have our interactions and Gary's, you
- 21:28know, all three of them have been very complimentary of me
- 21:31over the years. And I really appreciate that.
- 21:33One time, true story. One time Gary verbatim actually
- 21:37called me the best scorer that ever lived.
- 21:39I don't know if I can live up to that kind of, you know, praise.
- 21:41But you know, we got along well with the with those 3 and I'm
- 21:45honored to interact with them because, you know, they're
- 21:48regarded as maybe the best three man booth in the sport.
- 21:53So as a baseball fan, you obviously been fortunate enough
- 21:57to to be a part of the game for a long time in a in a job sense,
- 22:01but you're also a fan and we all have our favorite players.
- 22:05Who is who is your favorite player growing up and then now
- 22:09like as you've been able to call so many games, watch so many
- 22:12games, make decisions, your favorite player to watch.
- 22:16Well, my favorite player growing up was Mickey Mantle.
- 22:19I'm watching, I've been watching baseball since 1961, you know,
- 22:24and I grew up on Mantle and I was a big Mantle fan.
- 22:28You know, I, I have friend friendly relationships with a
- 22:31number of the players. And you certainly know this guy,
- 22:34Willie Randolph, you know, he, he was so nice to me in the
- 22:37early going when I was a young reporter.
- 22:40He treated me like an equal and, and we got, got to have a real
- 22:43good relationship over the years.
- 22:45And I remember when he he was the met manager, you know, I was
- 22:48close to him at that point. I was a big fan of his as a as a
- 22:51manager. I thought he got the the short
- 22:54end of the stick the way, you know, that he was dismissed and
- 22:58everything like that. He's one of my favorites since I
- 23:02got in the business. You know, Derek Jeter was a
- 23:05friend for a while until, you know, that incident with the pop
- 23:08up. So, you know, you get to these
- 23:11relationships with guys, you can't root, you know, openly.
- 23:15You have to be neutral. But I grew up a Yankee fan.
- 23:18I was a big, I'm a big Yankee fan.
- 23:20To this day inside, you know, I still root for them when I can.
- 23:24I can't do it at the ballpark. Obviously, you have to be down
- 23:27the middle. But you know, I still root for
- 23:30the Yankees. I like the Met people, too,
- 23:32because the Mets have treated me well over the years.
- 23:34I wasn't a big Met fan growing up, but I watched a lot of Met
- 23:37games in the old days on Channel 9, WOR in New York.
- 23:41You know, they were on all the time and we got to see the
- 23:43National League that way. So, you know, I've had some
- 23:47thrills over the years. One time I got to meet Willie
- 23:49Mays. I got to meet, you know, I was
- 23:53friendly with the late Tom Seaver, who actually, when he
- 23:55started broadcasting, he would come out of the booth, ask
- 23:59scoring questions because he was fascinated by the whole, you
- 24:03know, official scoring and he wanted to learn about it.
- 24:06I was flattered that he would come up to me and ask me
- 24:08questions, and we got a relationship out of that.
- 24:10So like I said, that's that's the great part about it.
- 24:14You know, the relationship with the players.
- 24:16When I was first starting out in the business, I was just a radio
- 24:19guy, you know, you know those guys, Jabba, they'd hold your
- 24:22mic and get a sound bite and sell it to a station.
- 24:25And a lot of the players didn't respect the guys like that
- 24:28because they didn't think they took the job seriously.
- 24:30But I wasn't like that. I took the job seriously even
- 24:33though I wasn't a beat reporter, really didn't get to know the
- 24:37players on an intimate basis like a lot of the beat reporters
- 24:40do. And, and I would ask serious
- 24:42questions that the beat reporters needed for their
- 24:45answers. So I built the relationship and
- 24:47and a reputation that way that people knew I was a little more
- 24:51serious than just your, you know, average radio guy who was
- 24:54just there to ask the generic question like, how do you feel
- 24:58or what's it feel like? And, you know, that would drive
- 25:01me crazy. I hated that and the.
- 25:03Same. The same question they asked
- 25:05every time. Yeah, exactly.
- 25:07And to get grouped in like that really bothered me because I was
- 25:10serious about it. And, and then things changed
- 25:13when I got the scoring job, you know, there was more interaction
- 25:17with the old timers, you know, like you, you weren't there when
- 25:21Dick Young was there, you know, but I'm sure you heard his name
- 25:24a number of times. You know, if Phil Pepe was there
- 25:27and you know, Bill Madden, you know about, you know, he, you
- 25:31know, he treated me a lot differently once I got the
- 25:34scoring job, you know, with a little more respect and a little
- 25:37more acknowledgement that I was a serious baseball reporter than
- 25:41just a guy who held the microphone.
- 25:43I hate reporters and I hate when they try to interact and they
- 25:46try to declare something that you're thinking in your head
- 25:49when you have no idea what that person is thinking in their head
- 25:52when they're getting interviewed.
- 25:54And that's why whenever I interview somebody, I completely
- 25:57go off off the, the cuff. I don't really, really want to
- 26:02stick them with something that everybody asks them because to
- 26:05me it's a turn off when you're, when you're speaking, you're
- 26:08interviewing somebody, you want them to remember you.
- 26:10You don't want them to say, oh, there's that idiot asking me the
- 26:13same old garbage. Everybody else asks me.
- 26:16And so I never, when I interview people, I don't ever want to hit
- 26:19them with anything. When we were at the Super Bowl,
- 26:22Howie and, and we were, we were interviewing people and we don't
- 26:26have the privilege of like a lot of these guys do.
- 26:28So we have to be on our toes because we don't have a time.
- 26:32Well, this guy has this time you have 15 minutes.
- 26:34Could you interview him? So we don't have time to figure
- 26:37out how we're going to ask the question.
- 26:38We just got to go right at it and ask him a question or ask
- 26:41him enough questions before they have to go.
- 26:44It makes you a better interviewer.
- 26:46It also gives you the opportunity to find out what and
- 26:49how you want to attack something and off the cuff that other
- 26:53people probably can't do or are uncomfortable doing, like
- 26:56Speedy, Speedy. If Speedy doesn't, if Speedy
- 26:59can't write something down, he's not going to interview you
- 27:02because he feels uncomfortable trying to dig a little bit
- 27:05deeper when he doesn't want to dig deep.
- 27:08So I'm one of those guys that will dig and dig and dig until I
- 27:13dig a six foot hole and ready to bury you.
- 27:15So that's what I like to do. And Jabba, that's How I Met
- 27:18Jabba. And Jabba I'll never forget.
- 27:21And I'll go back at it all the time because I say it all the
- 27:23time. Now that he's a part of the
- 27:25show. I, I said, well, how did you
- 27:27meet Jabba? And I said, well, he was
- 27:30actually a person that came on the show and I interviewed and
- 27:33they said, well, well, well, how did it all happen?
- 27:35So we reached out to him and Jabba told Speedy, I'm going to
- 27:38give you guys 20 minutes. You got 20 minutes to ask as
- 27:41many questions you possibly can. And I got to get the hell out.
- 27:44So. So I'll never forget it.
- 27:46We get him on the show and Jabba's sitting there and he's
- 27:49hanging out. And it went from 10 minutes to
- 27:5220 minutes to 30 minutes to 40 minutes to 50 minutes to an hour
- 27:58to an hour and 20. And before you know, it's an
- 28:01hour and 30 minutes. And at the end of the show, I
- 28:03said, hey, Jabba, I thought you said you would only have 20
- 28:06minutes. He says, wow, this went fast.
- 28:08He's like, I can't believe how fast it went.
- 28:10So I said, well, I can. And ever since then.
- 28:14And then he came on again and I said 20 minutes.
- 28:16He says no, we won't have a time limit because I don't know when
- 28:20that's going. To end it's funny, the second
- 28:21time we had about a fish actually asked more questions
- 28:23than me. Yeah, I'll never forget it.
- 28:27But now he's obviously a part of the show.
- 28:30So it's it's pretty funny when you have somebody on the show or
- 28:32we, we even get guests that come on the show and tell us, well, I
- 28:36got 1520 minutes. I say, yeah, I'll write 1520
- 28:39minutes that never, it never seems to happen that way.
- 28:43But before we let you go my friend, because it says you've
- 28:46written 14 sports books, tell us how we can find your sports
- 28:51books and what what book really sticks out from all the rest.
- 28:55Well, I have a page on Amazon, so that that basically is where
- 28:58you can find all the books. My last book is probably my
- 29:02favorite. It's about sports phone.
- 29:04I, I, I know you guys are too young.
- 29:06You don't really know what sports phone was basically in,
- 29:09in the 1980s, there was a thing called sports phone where you
- 29:13could dial A number and get a sports report and get updated
- 29:18scores. This is before you had all the
- 29:19access on telephones and computers and all that kind of
- 29:23stuff. You know, tickers on the, on the
- 29:26ESPN screen and all, all the access you have nowadays.
- 29:30Sports phone was a place to get your updated scores.
- 29:34Now, admittedly, you know, it catered to the gamblers because
- 29:38they were very interested in their scores.
- 29:41And there you go. 976-1313, a sports phone launched careers
- 29:46and broke new ground. I worked there for 12 years.
- 29:49That's where my career got started in, in sports media.
- 29:53I had no connections. I didn't really know anybody.
- 29:56I, I interned at WMCA in, in New York and then I knew they were
- 30:01doing a sports show with a guy named Art Rush Junior, who was a
- 30:04pioneer because he was the first black sportscaster on local
- 30:08television. Art was very, very in tune with
- 30:11sports. He knew a lot of people.
- 30:13I worked with Art and then Art got me credentials to go to a
- 30:16Yankee game. And you know, the first time I'm
- 30:18on the field, it was like such a thrill and in the dugout and
- 30:22places like that. And I met the guy from sports
- 30:24phone and luckily they were expanding.
- 30:26I had no, I was getting married in two weeks and I had no job.
- 30:30So it was a trying time. In 1980, July 19.
- 30:34You still with the same woman? I'm still with the same woman.
- 30:37Yeah, go 45 years it. Was the sports book that.
- 30:41Was it My wife said. My wife worked in media.
- 30:44She was in, she was a newscaster on the radio, WCBS.
- 30:49So we were both in the business and we kind of went through the
- 30:51same trials and tribulations. But sports phone is where I got
- 30:54started. You would call up and we would
- 30:57update it every 10 minutes. It was a recording.
- 30:59You call up the line and you get a, a sports report like your,
- 31:03your man Mr. Fishman just gave you.
- 31:06But it was only a minute long and it would be updated every 10
- 31:09minutes with scores updated. The latest scores you would get
- 31:13every 10 minutes. And now the, the gamblers loved
- 31:15it. I mean, you know, there was no
- 31:17other access that you could get these scores so, so fast and up
- 31:20to date. So it was a big deal in the 80s
- 31:23and then when WFAN came into being an ESPN with the ticker
- 31:27and then the computers and the phone, sports phone became
- 31:30obsolete. But the, the list of alum that
- 31:33came through there is, is endless.
- 31:35The talent that I'm, I'm a proud, you know, alum of sports
- 31:39phone. I'm, I'm, I'm proud to be a
- 31:41small part of it. I mean, you talk about the
- 31:43people that came through there. Gary Cohn worked there, Howie
- 31:46Rose, Steve Torry, who's on SiriusXM.
- 31:51You know, there's so many people that came through there and and
- 31:54basically got their start in the business.
- 31:55So that's probably my favorite book.
- 31:58You know, I've done a number of Yankee and Met books, done a
- 32:00number of hockey books. So proud to have my name on a
- 32:04book. It's a real thrill to see when
- 32:06your book comes out. Look, you know, I'm not going to
- 32:08win any Pulitzer Prizes, that's for sure.
- 32:11But you know, I like the fact that I've been able to do it.
- 32:14The computer makes it easy for your research and I've always
- 32:17enjoyed writing, so that's kind of like a hobby of mine.
- 32:20We really appreciate the time, my friend.
- 32:22And one of these days you got to come, you come out and hang out
- 32:26with us and maybe we'll go to a game and we'll hang out in the
- 32:30the press box and, and kind of get your take on what's going on
- 32:33in the baseball game. I mean, I, it would be very
- 32:37interested in, I'd be very intrigued on how you look at the
- 32:40game, You know, because it's, you've been, you've been
- 32:43watching the game a lot longer than I've been alive.
- 32:45I mean, you said 46 years. I'm 43 years old.
- 32:48So when you. Started doing it.
- 32:50Yeah, when you started, I was three years old, so I'm getting
- 32:55up there in age. But it's amazing how you've
- 32:58really just continued doing what you're doing and and really
- 33:02building a great career. And we really appreciate the
- 33:05time, my friend. Anytime you want to have me
- 33:07back. Love to come back with you guys,
- 33:10enjoyed it. Absolutely.
- 33:12And by the way, that was Nathan kind of locked you in with us
- 33:16and and I know it was like a last minute thing.
- 33:18We really appreciate you coming on at A at such a short notice,
- 33:21so. That's OK anytime.
- 33:24Like I said, just give me some advance notice.
- 33:26Well, thank you, Howie, and let's do it one time.
- 33:29All of us. Howie.
- 33:31Come on, guys. Howie, all right, don't you do
- 33:36it. You're trying.
- 33:36To great to see you Java. Good to see you as well.
- 33:41We know Java's not going to do that.
- 33:43You know that he doesn't have to.
- 33:47Howie, thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.
- 33:49Happy. Thanksgiving.
- 33:49Yeah, you too. To you and your families, thank
- 33:51you. Joey Carpin, 27 year MLB
- 33:55official scorer, 46 years in the sports world.
- 34:00It's a. Pretty and you'd be surprised
- 34:02how much we either hate or love them.
- 34:04We know. We know who we know who the
- 34:06official score is like don't let it fool you.
- 34:08Like people like people don't realize how like big of a job
- 34:12that is. Like we know who the official
- 34:14scorer is. Like we know.
- 34:17Well, there you go. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 34:20for the second-half of Save Your Tears Mom, what's 1?
- 34:25Thing. That you can't talk to me about
- 34:27my sexual fantasies. Say yourself.
- 34:32It is not ideal, but if it's what means it is not ideal, but
- 34:34if it's just not ideal, but if it is, what means you can't
- 34:38treble stamp a double stamp. You can't treble stamp a double
- 34:40stamp Lord, you can't dribble stamp with double stamp.
- 34:42Blood blood. You guys, I'm not bad.
- 34:46Now it's time for save your tears.
- 34:52All right, guys, welcome back. To Save Your Tears, we're going
- 34:56to go into the ward for this week's Week 13 games.
- 35:01In fact, we are just going to pick the Thanksgiving slate
- 35:06because of the three games on Thanksgiving.
- 35:08They're all really good games. We got the music going.
- 35:12Let's get right into it. In case you don't know what the
- 35:14games are, it's the Packers versus the Lions, Chiefs,
- 35:17Cowboys and Bengals. Ravens at night.
- 35:22So $5 player at quarterback. Again, if you're not able to
- 35:26watch with us, we do have video both on Spotify and Apple you
- 35:29can tune into. Also, we are on YouTube all over
- 35:32socials. Make sure you check us out
- 35:34wherever you can, $5 Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, followed
- 35:39by Dak Prescott, $3 Lamar Jackson, followed by $2.00 for
- 35:44Jordan Lovin. You can get Jared Goff for a
- 35:47dollar this week. Oohee.
- 35:51Coming off of a monster performance from one of my
- 35:55fantasy teams, Jameer Gibbs, it is the $5 running back this
- 35:59week, followed by Derrick Henry. Javonte Williams is at 3, Kareem
- 36:05Hunt for two and Chase Brown for a buck.
- 36:08Speaking of Chase, Joe Burrows back.
- 36:10We're not going to put Burrow into the quarterback list this
- 36:13week. Not exactly sure.
- 36:15You know, we'll give him a week to see where he's at.
- 36:16Going to be a little too much of A wild card and it's a stack
- 36:19quarterback room anyway. But we know that he's the one
- 36:21that's going to be thrown into the $5 receiver #1 Jamar Chase
- 36:26followed by #4 dollar Receiver is a big time player right here.
- 36:29George Pickens, but a big week last week.
- 36:32Rashi Rice, another big week last week at $3.
- 36:36Real loaded category there, boys.
- 36:38Romeo Dobbs at 2 and Jameson Williams, who was held catchless
- 36:42last week for a dollar. In wide receiver two, we got
- 36:46Amman Ross St. Brown for five, CD Lamb for
- 36:49four, Zay Flowers at 3, Christian Watson for two and
- 36:54Xavier Worthy only a dollar. Some value this week boys and a
- 36:59tight end, Travis Kelsey, Mark Andrews for four, Jake Ferguson
- 37:05at 3, Mike Kasicki comes in at $2.00 and the Lions back up
- 37:10Titan cuz San LaPorte is on the IR.
- 37:13Brock right for a buck. Since I won this last week I
- 37:18will make the order. We shall start it off with the
- 37:22one and only Immortal Knitting. All right, let's hear.
- 37:28Let's see here I got Jared Goff, Jamir Gibbs, George Pickens,
- 37:35Christian Watson. And help them out with the math
- 37:393 left what? What's the math?
- 37:43You got 3 left. OK, I got Jake Ferguson.
- 37:48Wow, you spent all your money this week, Nathan.
- 37:52Out of character, I've got Goth, Gibbs, Pickens, Watson and
- 37:58Ferguson. Next up is going to be Tommy.
- 38:03Poops. All right, I kind of was
- 38:06struggling on who I'm gonna pick a quarterback.
- 38:08I think I'm gonna go Lamar Jackson.
- 38:12Then I'm going Jameer Gibbs, Rashi Rice and I should have
- 38:18$4.00 left so I'm gonna go Zay Flowers and Brock Wright.
- 38:24All right, so I've got Lamar Gibbs, Rice, Flowers and Brock.
- 38:34Right. Followed up by Jared.
- 38:40All right, I am going to take goth at a dollar as well as
- 38:44Chase Brown and then I'm going to go Jamar Chase CD Lamb, Mark
- 38:49Andrews. Brown, Chase, Lamb, Andrews.
- 39:00What a stacking right there. That is an interesting strategy,
- 39:04$2.00 at quarterback and running back, everything else at the
- 39:07pass catching positions. All right, we'll go to.
- 39:14Speedy. All right, I'm going to take a
- 39:16similar approach to Tommy. I'm going to do 3 threes, A5 and
- 39:20A1, but I'm going to go a different direction.
- 39:22I agree with him on Lamar and Gibbs.
- 39:23I'm going to do that, except I'm going to go with Jameson
- 39:26Williams, Zay Flowers and Jacob Ferguson.
- 39:31Jameson Flowers and Ferguson. All right, I'm going to go last
- 39:47this time, so I'm going to have Mr. Errol Marx go next is.
- 39:53It me. All right.
- 39:59Who's the lines playing Packers? All right, I'm going to go golf.
- 40:12I'm going to go, Gibbs. I'm going to go Rice.
- 40:21How many is that? 99?
- 40:23I'm going to go all right. I'm going to go CD lamb.
- 40:37And how many do I have? Two, Two.
- 40:38I'm going to go Mike, Just sickie.
- 40:43All right, I got Goff, Gibbs, Rice, Lamb and Yaseki Jabba.
- 40:53All right. I'm going to go Dak Prescott,
- 40:59then I'm going to go. Derrick Henry, Rishi Rice.
- 41:08Then I'm going to go. You know what?
- 41:14I'm going to go. Would I have 4:00 left Right?
- 41:18Yes, you're at 11 right now. Then I'm going to go Xavier,
- 41:27Worthy and Ferguson. All right, so I got Worthy and
- 41:35Ferguson for ya. All right, I'm last here.
- 41:41All right, Yeah, I'm just going to go with the ones I know I
- 41:43want to do. I'm definitely taking Jamar
- 41:45Chase in this game. No Patti Higgins after being
- 41:50knocked out and Burrow and Chase didn't play last week as he was
- 41:54suspended. I think he's going to get a lot
- 41:56of points. Who else do I know I want?
- 42:00I'm going to take Kareem Hunt at running back.
- 42:05No one did that. Think there's value there?
- 42:12I like Xavier worthy this week. I think he's due for a touchdown
- 42:18and he's been OK Harold, I think you're selling him a little
- 42:20short. I think he's been a good #2
- 42:22receiver. Not as good as maybe as they
- 42:24thought, but I think he's solid. And how much does that give me
- 42:29left? 7 Left 3.
- 42:32I got 7 left. Oh man, this is nice.
- 42:38Who has the worst defense that they're facing?
- 42:43Oh, it's Lamar. Lamar gets to face the Bengals.
- 42:46I'm definitely taking Lamar this week and that gives me Mark
- 42:51Andrews from Lamar. Look at that combo.
- 42:55So I've got Lamar, Hunt, Chase Worthy and Andrews as my
- 43:01grouping. I'll share the screen just to
- 43:03show everybody back at home the full board once it comes up.
- 43:09Here it is. So you see, we got a bunch of
- 43:13Jared Goff, 3 Goffs, 3. Lamar's at quarterback.
- 43:17We got 3 Gibbs. A lot of variety after that at
- 43:21receiver. A lot of Rashi Rice this week.
- 43:25Looks like we've got some CD Lamb action.
- 43:29Ferguson pretty popular at tight end, guys.
- 43:32Again, if you don't win, you're not allowed to complain about.
- 43:36It I had to take a shit. You got to save your tears.
- 43:38Another toe job that went over like a farting church.
- 43:43All right, ladies and gentlemen, a new segment.
- 43:47This is the second time we're going to be using it.
- 43:49We call this what's beef? I'm a nut.
- 43:56I'm a nut. Do you know what beef is?
- 43:59Do you know what beef is? Which one are you afraid?
- 44:04I'll fight you both together. If you want.
- 44:06I'll fight you about 1 poor time.
- 44:07Behind the back. I'll fight you.
- 44:08Stand on one foot. I'll fight you with my eyes
- 44:11close. What are you scared?
- 44:13Watch your mouth. Guaranteed to be.
- 44:17And I'll see you one more time. All right.
- 44:22Ladies and gentlemen, I hope everybody enjoyed that drop.
- 44:24It's the first time we drop the drop.
- 44:27And now let's go into it. Well, with the tall guy, I
- 44:35thought just like that's not cool.
- 44:36I've seen them do dirty stuff before.
- 44:39I remember in the playoffs 2022, it broke my teammate's elbow.
- 44:44Dirty hit. That was very reminisce.
- 44:47That made me think of that. I don't like seeing that done.
- 44:52Do it or rookie, that's not cool.
- 44:54I'll compute you all the other basketball.
- 44:55Don't be dirty. That's not it, right?
- 45:01Nothing of intelligence, depth. It was really just his just
- 45:10running his mouth and he's running his mouth for a long
- 45:14time and it's funny to run your mouth when you're on the bench.
- 45:19It's kind of the story of his career so far, just leaving us
- 45:23want more. You know, we all want to see him
- 45:26out there and do his best, but he's just been and a lot of
- 45:31other stuff get in the way of that and we need that.
- 45:35We need our best players to be out there.
- 45:38And when you're a star, it comes with a great responsibility.
- 45:43I hate to see that called a waste.
- 45:46All right, So those were two drops, So I'm going to get into
- 45:49it. First of all, I have actually a
- 45:52story that I posted up over the last 24 hours.
- 45:56It's called clay dreaming, jaw rambling, the battle of who can
- 46:00embarrass themselves faster. So two guys that to me are
- 46:04obsolete this year and both guys averaging 17 points.
- 46:09And, and, and again, I don't think Klay Thompson is the same
- 46:13player he was with Golden State. I mean, with all the injuries
- 46:16and and all the backlash over the last couple of years and,
- 46:19and really going to the the Dallas Mavericks and probably
- 46:22regretting he went to the Dallas Mavericks because The Mavericks
- 46:25are a shell of what they thought they were going to be.
- 46:28But here's the thing. John Moran's going after Klay
- 46:32Thompson on the floor after the game is absolutely classic.
- 46:38Honestly, now John Moran is a shell of what he was and what he
- 46:42should have been and what he should be this year.
- 46:44This is a guy that's had problems on and off the court,
- 46:48the gun situation and then his game, the transition of his
- 46:52game. This guy at one point was the
- 46:54most electrifying, athletically gifted point guard.
- 46:58When he came into the league, what he was doing for the first
- 47:00two years was incredible. Everybody was saying this guy
- 47:03was a top three-point guard. He went from a top three-point
- 47:06guard, but not not even in the top 10.
- 47:09Right now he has fallen off completely.
- 47:12I don't know what's going on with the organization, if
- 47:14they're planning to move him or how they're going to move him
- 47:18after extending him the way they did.
- 47:20And they're really stuck in a long spot.
- 47:22Here's the thing with the the Klay Thompson.
- 47:24Klay Thompson don't get along with anybody.
- 47:26The Patrick Beverly situation, Patrick Beverly saying something
- 47:30about his his girlfriend make the stallion and he came out
- 47:34Patrick Beverly. But Patrick Beverly is just
- 47:36trying to bring in advertisements and sponsors.
- 47:38He's just trying to be funny. He's not a basketball, he's not
- 47:42an NBA player anymore. He's trying to bring in some
- 47:44kind of money for his product. And, and I understand the fact
- 47:48that Klay Thompson doesn't want to be spoken about, but this is
- 47:50the same guy that went out there over the years when he was
- 47:53playing for Golden State, not only fighting with his own
- 47:56teammates, he had a problems with Draymond Green.
- 47:59He's had problems with other players on his team not getting
- 48:02along with people in the locker room.
- 48:04Even at the tail end of his career.
- 48:06He had problems with Steph Curry and they weren't getting along
- 48:10his final year or final two years over there at Golden
- 48:13State. This is a guy that's had
- 48:14problems keeping relationships. Hopefully keeps this one with
- 48:19making it Megan the Stallion. I I mean this problem with him
- 48:23and John Moran and John Moran is perfect for the tabloids.
- 48:26Then he comes and attacks John Moran saying that and I think
- 48:29he's right. You want to see your best
- 48:31players on the court, but this guy can't keep himself out of
- 48:34the tabloids and out of trouble. There's no question.
- 48:37That's the problem right now with John Moran.
- 48:41But John Moran is still only, what, 2324 years old?
- 48:45He's got a lot of basketball left.
- 48:47How much basketball left does Klay Thompson have?
- 48:50And nobody likes this guy. It's it's not even the Dallas
- 48:55Mavericks in the organization. I'm sure there's a lot of rough
- 48:58stuff going on in that locker room because he don't he doesn't
- 49:02really talk to anybody. He's a very quiet guy.
- 49:06Again, going back to the Golden State Warriors situation, they
- 49:09did. He just couldn't get along with
- 49:11his teammates. And that Jordan Pool thing, you
- 49:14know what, the dream on green thing and and it happened.
- 49:17Who do you think started that whole thing?
- 49:19It was Clay Thompson that started that whole beef.
- 49:22And then the LeBron James take, you know, we all know LeBron
- 49:26James says a lot of silly things.
- 49:28When LeBron James goes back on some of the players he couldn't
- 49:31stand playing against, it wasn't Draymond Green, it was Klay
- 49:34Thompson. He was he was the name that
- 49:37LeBron James brought up in many conversations on his podcast on
- 49:41guys that he couldn't stand in the league.
- 49:44And I can't stand in the league over the years.
- 49:46So it says a lot about the fact that nobody likes Klay Thompson
- 49:52and John Marant, who besides the stuff that he's done on and off
- 49:56the court, a lot of the players think that he's still gifted, He
- 50:00still has an opportunity to be successful in the league.
- 50:03I I just think John Moran is in the wrong place right now.
- 50:06I think he needs to go somewhere where he could be controlled,
- 50:09maybe a coach, a veteran coach that's been in the league, AKA
- 50:14adjacent kid or somebody of that magnitude.
- 50:18I don't think he's going to play with Klay Thompson.
- 50:20It would be interesting them playing on the same team because
- 50:22I know Klay and Draymond didn't like each other.
- 50:24So I I think Clay has always been stuck in between a place of
- 50:31who he is and and what he is. Even when Kevin Durant was over
- 50:35there, Klay Thompson was one of the best players in his
- 50:37position, but he was forgotten because you had Kevin Durant and
- 50:40Steph Curry there. So he was just the other guy and
- 50:44that's the way I believe Klay Thompson's going to be
- 50:46remembered, not the Splash Brother, the other guy.
- 50:50And that's what he is like the step brothers he is.
- 50:53It was so funny when that that that picture of this day was him
- 50:56and Steph Curry and Steph Curry was the one sitting down and and
- 51:01Klay Thompson was 1 putting his hand on Steph Curry.
- 51:05That's his been his whole career.
- 51:07He's just been the other person, the other guy.
- 51:11And to attack John Morant, it's funny.
- 51:13I don't think it's going to go anywhere.
- 51:15It's just another way for them to to be stuck in the way this
- 51:20league is trying to find something to say about a player
- 51:24you don't like and try to draw them in to create some kind of
- 51:28conflict. Yeah, I was going to say like
- 51:30John Moran to somebody that has already inflicted a conflict on
- 51:34himself as it is too, but now. Do you hear anybody speaking bad
- 51:36about him honestly? Yeah, I mean.
- 51:39Do you really hear any player in the league besides the the stuff
- 51:43that he's done on off the on and off the court?
- 51:46Have you ever heard anybody say anything bad about John Moran?
- 51:50Yeah, I was going to say this is a much more tame instance
- 51:52compared to this. All he's doing is trying to pump
- 51:54up a teammate in Cam Spencer. That was a good three-point
- 51:57shooter on that Yukon second championship team.
- 51:59He's a rookie. I I forgot if he was a first or
- 52:01second round pick from the Grizzlies and he had a great
- 52:04night. So he's he's trying to pump him
- 52:05up. It didn't seem like an instance
- 52:06where it is. OK, maybe.
- 52:07Yeah, he took it personally taking Oh, the clay top said the
- 52:10shooter is not from Golden State, but again, this seems
- 52:13kind of mild in that kind of instances.
- 52:14OK, clay top is going to fire about his back in his rings Now
- 52:17John Moran off the court. Yeah, that's a whole other
- 52:19problem. And he's going to have to get
- 52:20something straight if he wants to get his career back on track
- 52:23because he's having a bad year on the court, too, in addition,
- 52:25off the court. But still, yeah, like you said,
- 52:27it's really not a player issue with him.
- 52:28It's just more of a media and legal authorities issue with
- 52:32John Marin more than anything else.
- 52:33And Klay Thompson is just petty from three years ago when they
- 52:36had that feud with Dylan Brooks and Gary Payton and all that.
- 52:38And Jarrett's been mentioning in the comments section, too, He
- 52:41took shots at Jaron Jackson for whatever reason, when Jaron
- 52:43Jackson was a defensive player of the year or something like
- 52:45that. It seems like Klay Thompson's
- 52:47going an extra level of petty. And Shawn didn't go after
- 52:49anybody but Klay. I mean, honestly, he didn't go
- 52:52after Cooper flag. He didn't go after anybody.
- 52:56He went after clay and clay takes everything so personal.
- 53:01He really does for all for all the years that he was over there
- 53:04when he played the the the heat, Remember the heat and and and
- 53:09the fact that he had a problem with certain players on the heat
- 53:11and then had problems with the Lakers with the Golden State
- 53:14Warriors said something about LeBron James, how big of a bitch
- 53:17he is and and all this other that crying.
- 53:20I mean, the Golden State Warriors for years have always
- 53:24been the cry babies of the league.
- 53:26Now you all of a sudden have guys, their coach coming out in
- 53:30and saying what he said over the last what last week saying that
- 53:35the league is not protecting the players and they should slow
- 53:38they they should spread out the games or cancel certain games or
- 53:42only have 70 games. Why?
- 53:43Because they're getting older and and they're not the same
- 53:45team they once were, young and energetic the way they've been
- 53:50over the years. And they don't have stops in
- 53:51there in his prime or Steph Curry or Draymond Green in their
- 53:54prime or even a Kevin Durant in their prime.
- 53:56So they're finding ways or Andrew Wiggins finding a way to
- 54:00complain and bitch. It's very Golden State like.
- 54:04And now we're going to go to Klay Thompson, who is the
- 54:06epiphany of the Golden State. Warriors Yeah, Klay Thompson
- 54:09tries to play the victim a lot. We've seen Steve Kerr try to
- 54:11play the victim a lot. Meanwhile, you're encouraging
- 54:13this kind of behavior from Draymond Green and claiming it's
- 54:16good leadership of the stuff that he does with the Warriors,
- 54:19with the Warriors locker, and which for a while it was.
- 54:21And then their own players, their own fans started to turn
- 54:23on them. And hence why you've seen a lot
- 54:25of these veteran corps gone at an incident.
- 54:27Was it a flagrant foul? Yes.
- 54:29Was it something that was as malicious as Draymond Green?
- 54:31All the crap that he's done in his career, chokeholding Rudy
- 54:33Gobert and kicking, kicking Steven Adams in the nuts and the
- 54:37stuff he did with the Sons and all that stuff, No.
- 54:40I think there's, I think you could shut the music and IA job.
- 54:45I don't know if you have your take on this.
- 54:47They're always like, it just feels like he's just trying to
- 54:49stay relevant when like there's other ways to do it.
- 54:53You've had a great career, but like, why do you continue to
- 54:55like draw other people when you're really the one like
- 54:58antagonizing it anyways? It's just everybody takes
- 55:00everything so personal. Like I just, I don't get it.
- 55:03Like you're an athlete. Like fans are gonna be fans,
- 55:05players are gonna be players like the end of the day, don't
- 55:08let them affect your money or you like I just it some of it
- 55:11just like guys are so soft now it just it makes no sense to me
- 55:14and he. He wants to be in the tabloids.
- 55:16He wants to be upfront if you're dating Megan.
- 55:19The look at his girlfriend. Yeah, if you're if you're going
- 55:22to all these the BT awards and you're showing up to all these
- 55:26awards, of course you're going to be center stage.
- 55:28You're going to be the center of attraction.
- 55:30You want to deal with that. You're you're bringing yourself
- 55:33in front of the the media and stuff like that.
- 55:36So John Morant, yeah, he's been a media antagonizer.
- 55:40He he's done some stupid things over the last couple of years.
- 55:43He's also 2324 years old. He's still a kid.
- 55:47He still has a lot of time to develop.
- 55:49And again, he might be in the wrong place and maybe he really
- 55:52hasn't developed into the player.
- 55:54Like Clay's right about this. There are things that he has
- 55:56done that's affected his game, has not really put him where he
- 56:01he should be. And I out of that drift, when
- 56:03you talk about RJ Barrett and you talk about Zion Williamson,
- 56:09Zion Williams, I, I, I, I would say he's the best player in that
- 56:13draft by far. He's the best player out of
- 56:15those three. But here's the problem.
- 56:17As gifted as he is, as, as he plays the game and and at a high
- 56:21pace, he's really taken away from his game for all the things
- 56:26that he's done on and off the court.
- 56:28So his game has really not developed the way you thought it
- 56:32was going to be. I thought he was going to
- 56:34transition his shooting ability. Remember when he came to the
- 56:37league, he wasn't much of A shooter.
- 56:38He got better, but he he really hasn't developed that shot where
- 56:42I thought that if he developed that shot, which Russell
- 56:45Westbrook couldn't because he's the prototypical player, he
- 56:48really is Russell Westbrook, but a better version of them and and
- 56:53it but is he now because he's falling off of Russell Westbrook
- 56:57got better and better every single year.
- 56:59If this kid figured out how to shoot the ball, do you know how
- 57:02good John Morant would be? We're talking about that about a
- 57:06player right now in Detroit that I said you can argue Kate
- 57:10Cunningham, who you could argue is the best point guard in the
- 57:13league right now and up for an MVP.
- 57:15He's better than Kate Cunningham.
- 57:17He really is. The gifts, the athletic ability
- 57:20that this guy has is tremendous. But we might never see it
- 57:25because of his problems and and some of the things that he
- 57:29brings to the forefront. It seems like he doesn't really
- 57:31want to play the game of basketball.
- 57:33It's all about money. It's all about fame.
- 57:35It's not about the game. And that's something I got to
- 57:38give LeBron James a little bit credit.
- 57:40As much as much as LeBron James has been stuck in those
- 57:43situations, LeBron still has been a great player.
- 57:47LeBron still developed and became the superstar that
- 57:51everybody believed he was going to become and then became a
- 57:55multi billionaire because he used his name to transition it
- 57:58into a money making gravity, you know, grab for the league.
- 58:02So unfortunately, John Morant is not LeBron James.
- 58:06He's not even close to LeBron James, and his game is just not
- 58:11flourishing. And I think that if you're a
- 58:13basketball fan, you wonder maybe this is the wrong place.
- 58:16Maybe Memphis is not the place for him, and maybe it's time to
- 58:20move him. If somebody would take him and
- 58:23go to an organization, maybe a city where he can be controlled
- 58:27and develop his skill, which could be, you know, it could be
- 58:31elite if he figures that out, that Clay is right.
- 58:35But everything else that he said about him completely wrong,
- 58:38completely. Warrior School of pettiness.
- 58:41I want to say this about the NBA players.
- 58:43Out of all the sports, they're the most when it comes to prima
- 58:47donnas and trying to figure out ways to create things that
- 58:51aren't there. And Draymond Green's done it for
- 58:54years. Brooks has started to do it with
- 58:57the Olympics with the Canadian team.
- 59:00I don't know if anybody's checked that out on Netflix.
- 59:03This is this is the problem with the NBA is that the NBA has
- 59:07allowed the players to run the league.
- 59:10And when you have this going on on the court, think about it,
- 59:14The game is over and you have John Morant who's not even
- 59:18playing in the game, and Klay Thompson going at it and yelling
- 59:22at each other and, and saying whatever they're saying, cursing
- 59:25at each other and calling each other out.
- 59:27And the, that the NBA didn't suspend these guys.
- 59:31I, I think you need to do something, suspend these guys,
- 59:35give them a game suspension so they understand not to embarrass
- 59:39the league. Because to me, the league is it,
- 59:42if it was David Stern there, if he was still the, the
- 59:46commissioner of the league, both guys would have been suspended,
- 59:50absolutely would have been suspended because we've seen
- 59:53David Stern do less things, less harsher things to players doing
- 59:57less things after a game and suspend them.
- 1:00:00So I just think that the NBA needs to take the bull by its
- 1:00:03horns. They don't know how to do it.
- 1:00:05And that's why Adam Silver to me is the worst commissioner in
- 1:00:08sports because he doesn't know how to control the players.
- 1:00:11And that's my opinion to it. And I, I, I feel, I feel for
- 1:00:15some of the. The the fans, because this is a
- 1:00:18very popular sport and it's growing internationally huge.
- 1:00:23And you're talking about 5 international players that a lot
- 1:00:27of people believe will be drafted in the in the top 15
- 1:00:30this year. Five of them and three of them
- 1:00:32could be drafted in the top ten. That's how it's growing
- 1:00:35internationally. And you have players like Klay
- 1:00:40Thompson and John Morant or Russell Westbrook and all these
- 1:00:44players, they all have podcasts now and they can do whatever
- 1:00:47they want and say what they want because it's freedom of speech.
- 1:00:51But if the league dropped a hammer on them and said, listen,
- 1:00:53you can't say this, You can't do this on your podcast, You can't
- 1:00:56interact or, you know, consider attacking this while you're
- 1:01:00playing in the league, Maybe the NBA would have more control over
- 1:01:03the players on what they say because, you know, they have
- 1:01:07they can do whatever the hell they want.
- 1:01:09So I think it's a really bad situation for the NBA and it
- 1:01:12seems like it's getting worse with sports betting.
- 1:01:14So this this isn't to me. There's no hidden, you know, hit
- 1:01:19a ball trick here. I think that the NBA Adam Silver
- 1:01:22should be fired. That's what I think.
- 1:01:25And I think that ownership needs to figure out how to control the
- 1:01:27players after the new CBA comes out.
- 1:01:29I don't know when the new CBA is, but something needs to be
- 1:01:33done with these players and keeping their mouth shut when
- 1:01:35they shouldn't be opening up. That's just my opinion.
- 1:01:38It was a great show. I want to wish everybody happy
- 1:01:40Thanksgiving. It's, it's a holiday to spend
- 1:01:44with their families. I, I mean, the holidays really
