- 0:00Speaker 1: One day, we get a call from the gas station.
- 0:03Speaker 1: They told us that we needed to stop letting our
- 0:05Speaker 1: people use their microwave to heat their pee.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Then they hop on a golf cart and start driving
- 0:11Speaker 2: around the facility in mascot costumes, flipping off every security
- 0:16Speaker 2: camera they can find. This is the Bad Hire, the
- 0:20Speaker 2: show with the best stories about the worst employees.
- 0:23Speaker 3: We fired him.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Of course, people are crazy.
- 0:26Speaker 3: It's like an hr nightmare.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Right One Bad Hire stole all of it crazy stuff.
- 0:31Speaker 1: She got what she deserved.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Oh. I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
- 0:37Speaker 2: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
- 0:41Speaker 2: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
- 0:44Speaker 2: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they're cautionary
- 0:48Speaker 2: tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started,
- 0:54Speaker 2: all right, Hi everyone, and welcome to The Bad Hire
- 0:57Speaker 2: The Podcast. We're hiring disasters, meet guaranteed firings. I'm back
- 1:03Speaker 2: today with Nathan and Emma. Yes you do, you're good?
- 1:13Speaker 4: All right?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Ready for some stories?
- 1:15Speaker 2: You ready for some stories? All right? Every week we
- 1:18Speaker 2: dive into the wildest, the weirdest, and the most jaw
- 1:21Speaker 2: dropping hiring fails from offices, job sites, organizations, nonprofits, you
- 1:27Speaker 2: name it, wherever that bad hires happen, so you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: send it to us. Don't forget. We have a contest
- 1:35Speaker 2: running this year. Send us your stories that enters you
- 1:39Speaker 2: into the contest. It should be a bad hire story.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It could be a bad interview. It could be a
- 1:43Speaker 2: bad first day on the job. It could be a
- 1:45Speaker 2: bad just a flame out after some period of times something,
- 1:48Speaker 2: you know what, you know, those stories you love to tell.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We think, we think everybody's got a story, especially in
- 1:53Speaker 2: the recruiting and hiring business. Everybody's got a story, probably
- 1:56Speaker 2: lots of them that you love to tell when you're
- 1:59Speaker 2: hanging out, uh with your friends. So we want to
- 2:02Speaker 2: hear those stories. People love to hear them, and so
- 2:06Speaker 2: send them in. What We'll send them into the badhire
- 2:08Speaker 2: dot Com. What we're gonna do will select the best
- 2:12Speaker 2: after the end of the year. The winner gets ten
- 2:14Speaker 2: thousand dollars. All right, nice, sound good? Yeah? All right,
- 2:18Speaker 2: all right, I've I've I've just got one today. So
- 2:22Speaker 2: but it's a couple of little stories rolled into one,
- 2:27Speaker 2: so I'll kick it off.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Interesting, okay, Oh, it's probably like a couple of like, oh,
- 2:38Speaker 5: I hired these three people, and this person did this,
- 2:40Speaker 5: this person did this.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Maybe I don't know, you're predicting my stories. This is
- 2:47Speaker 2: the story of the greatest job exit I've ever heard.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It's good interrm.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I like that. So as a recruiter, So I, as
- 3:00Speaker 2: a recruiter, place a guy in a role, not just him,
- 3:04Speaker 2: him and his best friend.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Always a bad idea of.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Same company, same contract, and it's perfect. They love the job,
- 3:14Speaker 2: the company loves them. Everybody's winning. You're thinking, all right,
- 3:20Speaker 2: this is what is supposed to look like. Fast forward
- 3:23Speaker 2: to the end of the contract. The company extends both
- 3:26Speaker 2: of them full time offers like rollover offers. Basically, we
- 3:31Speaker 2: want you here permanently. Right, that's a dream scenario for
- 3:34Speaker 2: everybody involved. The only catch is that the rollover process
- 3:38Speaker 2: is taking a little longer than they expected. And this okay,
- 3:42Speaker 2: so this was over ten years ago, right, So it's
- 3:46Speaker 2: in the middle of nowhere. Court records apparently weren't online
- 3:50Speaker 2: in that location, so the background check literally required someone
- 3:56Speaker 2: to go pull paperwork by hand at the time. So
- 4:00Speaker 2: the company's working on it. So I guess they're saying,
- 4:04Speaker 2: we didn't do one previously, so they are just contractors before,
- 4:08Speaker 2: and we didn't screen our contractors before we send them
- 4:11Speaker 2: to you. Uh so the company's working on it. But
- 4:13Speaker 2: these two guys decide they're done waiting on their background checks,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and instead of passking okay, instead of asking HR, instead
- 4:22Speaker 2: of being patient, instead of doing anything remotely normal, they
- 4:27Speaker 2: choose complete chaos. So they are somehow fined. Where the
- 4:31Speaker 2: company stores the company mascot costumes.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Okay, do you get one of them?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Company?
- 4:39Speaker 2: They put them on. Then they hop on a golf
- 4:42Speaker 2: cart and start driving around the facility in mascot costumes,
- 4:47Speaker 2: flipping off every security camera they can find. They parked
- 4:52Speaker 2: the car, walk off the job, and they are never
- 4:55Speaker 2: seen again.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I'm not going to sound like our comments on our
- 4:58Speaker 3: videos right now.
- 4:59Speaker 6: That is not They.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Were days away from full time offers, and they chose
- 5:06Speaker 2: an all the time bad higher exodents.
- 5:08Speaker 6: Just did not wait for two days. They blew up
- 5:10Speaker 6: their careers.
- 5:11Speaker 3: There's no way that actually happened.
- 5:14Speaker 1: If this was you, we need you to comment.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was me.
- 5:19Speaker 3: If you submitted this story on Reddit ten years ago.
- 5:22Speaker 2: No, no, no, I think you said that it was
- 5:24Speaker 2: ten years ago.
- 5:25Speaker 6: This story.
- 5:25Speaker 3: If you submitted this story on Reddit and just said
- 5:28Speaker 3: that it happened ten years ago. Please let us know
- 5:31Speaker 3: if it's actually real.
- 5:33Speaker 2: We want to know this has really happened.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, like it said, instead of doing anything sane or normal,
- 5:38Speaker 1: here's what handles every time we say or that can't
- 5:41Speaker 1: be true, right, or I don't think this one's true
- 5:44Speaker 1: or someone.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That's probably the first one where I've been like, there's
- 5:46Speaker 3: no way that's all.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The others, it's been a couple more like okay, first
- 5:50Speaker 2: one for me, you know which one it really got me.
- 5:52Speaker 2: It was the one where there's like, hey, we changed
- 5:54Speaker 2: the rule book, you know, the employees. So the guy
- 5:58Speaker 2: said I get three warnings writing anyway, you know, and
- 6:02Speaker 2: I was like, okay, I think that's like I couldn't
- 6:05Speaker 2: believe that one. It's like some folklore hr story told you.
- 6:08Speaker 2: It's like a joke. Yeah, joke, right. But every time
- 6:12Speaker 2: you every time we uh say oh that can't be true,
- 6:17Speaker 2: there's like always someone it says, no, I had something
- 6:21Speaker 2: exactly like that happened too, which is also like this
- 6:24Speaker 2: unlimited and that's what that's what's been wild about all
- 6:26Speaker 2: them one is getting submitted to us.
- 6:28Speaker 6: It's like, okay, well this person.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I guess could be like submitting a completely fake story
- 6:32Speaker 1: to try and win the contest. I guess you could
- 6:34Speaker 1: do that, but the sex with somebody's lived experienced, I guess,
- 6:38Speaker 1: so maybe you'd verify somehow. But it's not just pulled
- 6:40Speaker 1: from Reddit. I guess somebod these are pulled from Reddit
- 6:42Speaker 1: and stuff like that. But yeah, that's crazy, all right,
- 6:46Speaker 1: they sound very dumb.
- 6:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I've got one quick story, and then we got a
- 6:51Speaker 1: couple video clips of stories that people have been submitting
- 6:55Speaker 1: their stories and asking to be a guest on the show,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but when they're in some other state far away from
- 6:59Speaker 1: where re record here in North Carolina, I just pulled
- 7:02Speaker 1: them onto a riverside clip, so we record on riverside
- 7:06Speaker 1: just like zoom. So if you do have a story
- 7:08Speaker 1: and you actually want to be on the podcast as
- 7:11Speaker 1: a guest, we can't make it to our studio in
- 7:13Speaker 1: North Carolina, just hit us up and we'll have you.
- 7:15Speaker 2: At the very least, we've posted a couple of full.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Length episodes of like the full recorded virtual episodes, but
- 7:22Speaker 1: the very least, we'll take your stories and have them
- 7:24Speaker 1: here on the show. So anyways, you got a couple
- 7:25Speaker 1: of those two. But first, I've got one quick story.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:29Speaker 1: At my company, we had a drug testing facility that
- 7:32Speaker 1: we sent our people to that was about five minutes
- 7:35Speaker 1: away from our office. One day, we get a call
- 7:38Speaker 1: from the gas station that shared a parking lot with
- 7:41Speaker 1: the drug testing facility.
- 7:43Speaker 6: They told us that we needed.
- 7:44Speaker 1: To stop letting our people use their microwave to heat
- 7:47Speaker 1: their pee because somebody had heated it so long and
- 7:51Speaker 1: it had turned black and they had to evacuate the
- 7:54Speaker 1: gas station due to the smell.
- 7:57Speaker 6: So that's the whole story.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So I guess people are trying to cheat on their
- 8:02Speaker 1: drug tests because like when you do a drug test,
- 8:05Speaker 1: they see if it's warmed, because you can't just like
- 8:07Speaker 1: bring in somebody else. And so people were trying to
- 8:10Speaker 1: cheat by sneaking over to the gas station, micro waving
- 8:13Speaker 1: the pea, and then sneaking back in with someone who's cleaned.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I have never been into a gas station that has
- 8:18Speaker 3: a marketwave where.
- 8:21Speaker 6: Seven elevens they have, like the hot dogs, they got
- 8:23Speaker 6: the pee, it's.
- 8:23Speaker 2: All right there. You know what this no, you know
- 8:26Speaker 2: what this tells me about you. It's like someone always
- 8:31Speaker 2: goes and gets your stuff for you're in your car
- 8:34Speaker 2: and you're like, can you get me you know, a
- 8:39Speaker 2: coffee drink?
- 8:40Speaker 3: And I'm not going in by myself.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Especially not this one. That's stay away from this, guess
- 8:46Speaker 1: a microwaving every kid station.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I have just never noticed at.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Least seven eleven. To be fair, I don't really eat there,
- 8:54Speaker 1: so I never I don't think I ever used it before.
- 8:56Speaker 1: What you have walked, I think you have to work
- 8:58Speaker 1: in construction to eat there, for sure.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I mean there's they're like.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Is that a big construction.
- 9:04Speaker 2: No, No, it's if you go into a circle K
- 9:08Speaker 2: circle case of like turned it into those right.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They have like the eighty nine cent burritos, which are amazing,
- 9:15Speaker 1: But initially they started out.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Building like way you can get hot dogs, and they
- 9:19Speaker 2: started building other food stuff. And you know, a lot
- 9:22Speaker 2: of construction any a lot of outdoor you know where
- 9:26Speaker 2: you you might be, you might be dirty, right, so
- 9:31Speaker 2: you don't you're not going to go sit in a restaurant.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Maybe you don't want to run through a drive through.
- 9:35Speaker 2: You can come here. You can kind of load up
- 9:37Speaker 2: on you know, your your energy drinks, plus grab something.
- 9:41Speaker 7: I've been into gas stations where obviously they're before I've
- 9:45Speaker 7: been obviously, I've been into the gas gas stations where
- 9:50Speaker 7: like they have like the warmers in there with the
- 9:53Speaker 7: food on it.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Is that what they're talking.
- 9:56Speaker 1: The talk adjacent to there? Yeah, so you're you're right,
- 9:58Speaker 1: there's they got the Taketo's and the pizza if you
- 10:00Speaker 1: had like a seven eleven or something like that. But
- 10:02Speaker 1: then we're kind of around the corner some places how
- 10:05Speaker 1: to place it, like the whole thing you can pump
- 10:06Speaker 1: your own nacho cheese nachos. Next to that is like
- 10:10Speaker 1: the is the microwave for like again like the frozen
- 10:13Speaker 1: burritos or something like that.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Marcus, he's there all the time, right, Yeah, he likes it.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, that's not That's not the first spot
- 10:23Speaker 3: I go to where I go into a.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Gas st It's all open at midnight a year round,
- 10:29Speaker 1: like all day, twenty four hour.
- 10:30Speaker 2: The last time my buddy was in town, we ended
- 10:32Speaker 2: up at one like a minute. Sounds fun before we
- 10:35Speaker 2: dive back into the chaos on the bad hire. This
- 10:38Speaker 2: episode is brought to you by be Checks. Hiring shouldn't

- 11:20Speaker 2: I'm bad. Wait, so we're gonna do We're gonna do
- 11:24Speaker 2: a couple of riverside reacts. Is that right? Do a
- 11:26Speaker 2: couple of segment reacts?
- 11:27Speaker 6: No?
- 11:27Speaker 2: No, I call these segments. I don't know. Come come
- 11:29Speaker 2: to a segment on the show. Talk to her. Sure,
- 11:31Speaker 2: we'll interview you.
- 11:32Speaker 1: This is an episode with Steve. Steve is amazing. He's
- 11:35Speaker 1: one of my favorite guts I've talked to. He's out
- 11:37Speaker 1: in Los Angeles and he cool background. Yeah, he is
- 11:41Speaker 1: a very cool background. I think we might post more
- 11:43Speaker 1: of his clips, like on our social media and stuff
- 11:45Speaker 1: like that. But this is one of the stories that
- 11:47Speaker 1: he told me.
- 11:48Speaker 8: It was a kid who came in looking for a
- 11:50Speaker 8: tech spot and he literally went from high school to
- 11:54Speaker 8: a ninety day coding camp. He never went to college,
- 11:57Speaker 8: never got a job, never worked anywhere, straight out high school,
- 12:00Speaker 8: three month coding camp. I had an interview with him.
- 12:02Speaker 8: You wanted one hundred and forty thousand dollars to start,
- 12:05Speaker 8: and this is eight years ago, and even today that's
- 12:07Speaker 8: as a starting salary. I think one forty's probably on
- 12:10Speaker 8: the high side. And I said, look, I'm not doubting
- 12:13Speaker 8: that you're able to do this, but you've never had
- 12:15Speaker 8: a job. I said, I don't know how you're going
- 12:17Speaker 8: to be as an employee. You have zero references, you
- 12:20Speaker 8: have zero experience, and you look good on paper. You
- 12:23Speaker 8: check all the boxes you know, regarding software development. But
- 12:25Speaker 8: I just in good conscience, I can't hire you right now.
- 12:28Speaker 8: And I said, look, the other thing you should be
- 12:30Speaker 8: aware of is when you come into an interview, it's
- 12:32Speaker 8: going to be slanted towards the employer. You're there to
- 12:35Speaker 8: kind of serve their needs initially at least. Yeah, they're
- 12:37Speaker 8: going to compensate you, but that's the balance. You do
- 12:39Speaker 8: the work they pay you, and it can't be the
- 12:41Speaker 8: first thing out of your mouth is what are my
- 12:43Speaker 8: days off? Or can I work?
- 12:44Speaker 2: You know, certain days.
- 12:45Speaker 8: From home you didn't know.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And again I didn't.
- 12:47Speaker 8: Hold men in the personally, I'm just trying to help them.
- 12:49Speaker 8: But I said, you straight out of high school and
- 12:51Speaker 8: you have zero experience with a work and the money
- 12:53Speaker 8: you're asking for is pretty healthy. I said, I'm not
- 12:56Speaker 8: going to hire you. I might hire you at half
- 12:57Speaker 8: that and maybe you can come back in six months
- 12:59Speaker 8: or a year when you've got something under your belt,
- 13:01Speaker 8: but I just can't do it. It was shocking to me.
- 13:04Speaker 8: That's where we are and this is you know, la
- 13:06Speaker 8: and it's kind of the tech stuff. But again, your
- 13:08Speaker 8: choice as a company, as a hiring person to bring
- 13:11Speaker 8: somebody on your team, you don't always have to say.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Us, okay, they're a lot crazy, but yeah, that's crazy.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So at eighteen, or maybe maybe twenty two.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Especting that much out of right out of high school
- 13:23Speaker 3: was just insane to me.
- 13:25Speaker 2: At did a three month coding camp and I'm good
- 13:28Speaker 2: wing to be the top.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Three months is enough. It's also crazy because I did
- 13:33Speaker 3: a lot of that in college.
- 13:34Speaker 6: And it's still I.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Like Steve, but he did say the kid checked all
- 13:38Speaker 2: the boxes, and I'm like, wait, he's just out of
- 13:42Speaker 2: high school and he went to a three month coding camp.
- 13:44Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe on paper, it's like, do you know how
- 13:48Speaker 2: to do this? I know I do that. Do you
- 13:50Speaker 2: know how to do this?
- 13:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:50Speaker 1: I know I did, But what's your experience? It's like, oh,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I did a coding camp I found on YouTube.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a fun thing to say, oh, yeah, I
- 13:58Speaker 3: can do that.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Now we've had we actually have hired developers out of both.
- 14:03Speaker 2: We actually ran an experiment one time and hired out
- 14:07Speaker 2: of a coding camp and out of like four degree
- 14:12Speaker 2: university degree. And and I think we found out they're
- 14:16Speaker 2: both talented. Both could write code. Yeah, in the end, So,
- 14:21Speaker 2: you know, I think there's it's it's up to the student,
- 14:24Speaker 2: you know, what they might be looking for for year,
- 14:26Speaker 2: experience and opportunity to grow. And I learned a lot
- 14:30Speaker 2: more than just everything, you know, compressing too, and.
- 14:33Speaker 3: You actually to prove your abilities to them.
- 14:37Speaker 2: That's probably. Yeah, there's something about going you know, there's
- 14:39Speaker 2: something about going to school that says to me about
- 14:41Speaker 2: someone I'm capable of getting up, going, you know, going
- 14:44Speaker 2: to class, getting things done, not only in subjects I love,
- 14:47Speaker 2: but in subjects I don't. Right, that's a huge one.
- 14:49Speaker 2: If I love coding and I go to a coding
- 14:51Speaker 2: boo camp, like, man, I just landed and the stuff
- 14:54Speaker 2: I love. I was like, but you know, work every
- 14:56Speaker 2: day is not exactly stuff you love. You still to
- 15:00Speaker 2: get it done. You still got to get an a
- 15:01Speaker 2: on it.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's like, not that I know anything about coding,
- 15:04Speaker 1: but imagine that having some years under your belt of
- 15:08Speaker 1: actually actually doing in the real world, like for an
- 15:11Speaker 1: actual company, would probably speak volumes to someone who's hiring
- 15:14Speaker 1: for someone like that, versus.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Definitely going through like a coding camp. You have probably
- 15:18Speaker 3: have certain prompts that you have to go through. So
- 15:20Speaker 3: I feel like it's very organized as compared to like,
- 15:25Speaker 3: if you're in the real world and doing some type
- 15:27Speaker 3: of coding, then it's going to be different every day
- 15:29Speaker 3: compared to what you're doing if you're just doing a
- 15:32Speaker 3: simple little yeah you know prompt.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, dude, doing a prompt in camp or you know,
- 15:39Speaker 2: even so, what's next? What do you got?
- 15:41Speaker 1: I got one more story with Veronica, who's also in hiring,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and she was telling me about a story who did
- 15:49Speaker 1: not go as planned. I guess I lead as the
- 15:52Speaker 1: leading Okay, I guess that's how they all are, but
- 15:54Speaker 1: this is Veronica.
- 15:55Speaker 9: I had this great candidate who absolutely nailed the interview process.
- 16:00Speaker 9: You know, great energy, super personable, asked very thoughtful questions.
- 16:05Speaker 9: You know, the type of candidate that you're in a meeting,
- 16:07Speaker 9: you're in a call, and everybody gets off and it says, okay,
- 16:09Speaker 9: when can he start?
- 16:11Speaker 2: It was that great.
- 16:12Speaker 9: We made an offer, accepted immediately. He stayed in touch
- 16:16Speaker 9: with me throughout, and we tend to hire a couple
- 16:19Speaker 9: months prior to their start date because we have firm
- 16:21Speaker 9: start dates. I was surprised and actually liked that he
- 16:24Speaker 9: stayed in touch, constantly checking in during the background check,
- 16:28Speaker 9: excited messages about his start date, and genuinely pumped up
- 16:31Speaker 9: to be here, to be joining the team. Fast forward
- 16:34Speaker 9: to his first week of work. I get a message
- 16:37Speaker 9: from his GM, the general manager, that stops me cold.
- 16:41Speaker 9: He's like, he's missing. He's not late, not logged off early,
- 16:45Speaker 9: but missing. He hadn't showed up for training for two
- 16:48Speaker 9: days straight and so I'm thinking that can be right.
- 16:51Speaker 6: You know.
- 16:51Speaker 9: The GM asked me if I heard from him. I said, no,
- 16:53Speaker 9: unfortunately I haven't. He didn't text me or anything, which
- 16:56Speaker 9: was already strange. Then the GM, the general manager, dropped
- 17:00Speaker 9: the next bomb. They reached out to his emergency contact,
- 17:03Speaker 9: his mother, and she hadn't heard from him in two
- 17:05Speaker 9: days either. Even says that she filed the police report.
- 17:09Speaker 9: At that point, you know it's no longer hiring issue,
- 17:12Speaker 9: is more of a human issue. Months go by, we
- 17:14Speaker 9: don't hear back from him or no updates. We eventually
- 17:19Speaker 9: reopened the position one day. Months later, Curiosity got the
- 17:23Speaker 9: best of me and I said, let me just do
- 17:25Speaker 9: a cool Google search because I want his name. I
- 17:28Speaker 9: was like, let me see if I can find some information.
- 17:30Speaker 9: And there it was in a newspaper article, smiling featured
- 17:35Speaker 9: promoting his brand new business, inviting people to join him
- 17:38Speaker 9: in his new big endeavor. And it was at that
- 17:41Speaker 9: moment I realized something. Sometimes candids don't ghost you, they
- 17:45Speaker 9: vanish and rebrand.
- 17:50Speaker 6: You're interested so interesting.
- 17:52Speaker 1: She told me that story, and I was like, what,
- 17:55Speaker 1: Like he disappeared and then just kind of his.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Mom fought a police. Then Slider, he's like, oh.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Here he is a start up.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Now two days of training, well, now there's two things
- 18:06Speaker 2: crazy right. Two days of training and he realized, oh,
- 18:08Speaker 2: I don't like corporate bro.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, just the employer, but ghosted.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I'm sorry mom, mom too. Yeah, what could he have started?
- 18:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:20Speaker 1: It's some kind of text startup about vanishing and disappearing
- 18:24Speaker 1: for the world. I guess, I don't know.
- 18:26Speaker 3: That's very strange.
- 18:27Speaker 2: She's weary. And then and then to the ghost my mother.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I'd have had to go. I'd have had to have
- 18:36Speaker 2: been disappeared for like three months from my mom would
- 18:38Speaker 2: have considered called the cops. Yeah, heard from him. He
- 18:42Speaker 2: might be dead. He must he must be busy. Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 2: his mom called the cops after two days. Yeah. Yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 2: I mean that's that's a man. I'm telling you right now.
- 18:52Speaker 2: That's well, that's what that's. Someone is connected to their mom.
- 18:56Speaker 2: You're talking like two three times a day. She's in
- 18:59Speaker 2: I didn't hear about the second day. She's like, oh,
- 19:01Speaker 2: this is this is a cop batter. This my son
- 19:04Speaker 2: days call me that the he's probably dead. Yeah, this
- 19:08Speaker 2: is your mom. You take your often, you talk to
- 19:12Speaker 2: your mom? What every day? Every day?
- 19:15Speaker 6: Oh?
- 19:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I can't have to.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Oh that's right, Yeah, I guess. So that was.
- 19:22Speaker 6: She literally said.
- 19:23Speaker 3: She literally said the other day, if if she was
- 19:26Speaker 3: ever like on a game show, and the question was
- 19:29Speaker 3: you have to call one person and if they pick up,
- 19:32Speaker 3: if they pick up the phone, you win like X
- 19:33Speaker 3: amount of dollars. She said that she would call me.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I will always pick up the phones.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Great. Is that true?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah it is, Yeah, it's it's And if I don't
- 19:42Speaker 3: call right back, It's.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Twelve forty nine on the Saturday night, I'm most likely awake.
- 19:49Speaker 2: You're hanging with your friends. Yep, right downtown Charlotte. Boom
- 19:54Speaker 2: phone rings, yep, true. Mom.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I would immediately answer because I would think something's wrong.
- 19:59Speaker 3: She's never up l Let's see what it would make
- 20:02Speaker 3: me think something was wrong. So of course I would answer.
- 20:03Speaker 6: Let's see what about that.
- 20:05Speaker 2: She would be like, where are you at? What do
- 20:07Speaker 2: you do?
- 20:08Speaker 3: He's got my location?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Okay, yes, she's in the middle of downtown Charlotte. She's worried,
- 20:15Speaker 2: look about your dad.
- 20:16Speaker 6: Let's see what she has to say about She's around
- 20:18Speaker 6: the corner.
- 20:19Speaker 2: He would the world.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I don't know if he would worry, if he if
- 20:23Speaker 3: he could see where I am, and he's not going
- 20:25Speaker 3: to call and say where are you right, it's not
- 20:29Speaker 3: gonna waste his time.
- 20:30Speaker 1: If that gets stop sharing their locations with me, so
- 20:33Speaker 1: something would be I guess like your mom would call
- 20:35Speaker 1: the cops after yes, the day, after two days, Hello.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Would to take her? What do you mean, Helen, would
- 20:40Speaker 2: it take her call the cops? Yeah? Probably one day. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 2: probably your choice as fast as our brand ambassador there, Yeah,
- 20:52Speaker 2: started his own gig. That was very random.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I mean the fact that you'd ghost your employer that
- 20:58Speaker 1: you're talking to is like one thing, but like your
- 21:00Speaker 1: family doesn't hear from you, and you're like, I started
- 21:02Speaker 1: a company, yeah, for someone who was so.
- 21:04Speaker 2: So like really all about it the whole time. It
- 21:07Speaker 2: feel like it'd be so easy to go to the
- 21:09Speaker 2: GM and go instead of just ghosting the guy, just
- 21:11Speaker 2: be like yeah, you know what. After two days of training,
- 21:14Speaker 2: I realized this isn't for me. Yeah you know, yeah, Yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 2: I'm going to rent a m I'm going to rent
- 21:19Speaker 2: a Lamborghini and pretend it's mine and go on social
- 21:22Speaker 2: media see if I can.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Get a Yeah, you think you would speak up after
- 21:25Speaker 3: like after, she said he had followed up multiple times
- 21:28Speaker 3: throughout the whole hiring cross what she said was a
- 21:31Speaker 3: month long thing, months long process, because she said that
- 21:34Speaker 3: they would it would tell them like their start date
- 21:38Speaker 3: will be months from now.
- 21:39Speaker 2: There's been a couple of stories where like the company
- 21:43Speaker 2: someone ghosted and the company actually got worried. I think
- 21:45Speaker 2: we were talking about the other day. I was like,
- 21:46Speaker 2: what it did culture that company? Their first response was
- 21:49Speaker 2: to be worried for the person. Yeah, you know, to
- 21:52Speaker 2: do a wellness check.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And you know, I think anytime we have a story
- 21:57Speaker 1: on this show about somebody ghosting somebody, that always seems
- 22:01Speaker 1: like the most relatable one because I think anything in
- 22:04Speaker 1: the recruiting and hiring world that has to do with
- 22:06Speaker 1: ghosting and like just never hearing back from somebody you
- 22:08Speaker 1: thought it was going well on either side, whether it
- 22:10Speaker 1: say the candidate or like, the happens all the time.
- 22:14Speaker 1: And I've been there before, Like I was looking for jobs,
- 22:16Speaker 1: like oh this is going so well, Like I nailed
- 22:18Speaker 1: that interview, and the you just like never hear from
- 22:20Speaker 1: them again.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I ghosted, do what I think?
- 22:22Speaker 6: That's why That's why I had to follow it back.
- 22:23Speaker 6: I showed up at your doorstet like, hey about that
- 22:26Speaker 6: job ghost on me?
- 22:28Speaker 2: Stalked me on my Lamborghini. That's so funny, all right,
- 22:33Speaker 2: it was up today? Is this you?
- 22:36Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 22:36Speaker 4: I think so all right, I've got two stories. I'll
- 22:41Speaker 4: start with this one. I haven't reread this one before
- 22:48Speaker 4: beginning this episode, so I don't really remember.
- 22:51Speaker 2: So we'll see how it goes.
- 22:52Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So we're expecting a lot of stumbling with long words.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Maybe, I don't know.
- 22:56Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Today I had to fire an employee who was with
- 23:00Speaker 3: me for almost exactly a year. I have a team
- 23:02Speaker 3: of fourteen employees. We had several verbal warning conversations in
- 23:07Speaker 3: different iterations, and I saw improvement at first. Recently we
- 23:10Speaker 3: had some major issues with them arriving late, running behind
- 23:13Speaker 3: with clients, and charging inappropriately. We had written warning meeting.
- 23:17Speaker 3: We had a written warning meeting, which was met with
- 23:20Speaker 3: a lot of defensiveness from the employee. For context, it's
- 23:23Speaker 3: a hair salon today. I asked them if they were
- 23:27Speaker 3: going to finish their client in time or if they'd
- 23:28Speaker 3: be running behind. They assured me they'd be finished on time.
- 23:33Speaker 3: They were a full half hour late for their next
- 23:35Speaker 3: client and charged the first client, who who they had
- 23:38Speaker 3: spent seven hours with incorrectly. I had my manager meet
- 23:42Speaker 3: at work and we met with the stylists and let
- 23:45Speaker 3: them go. They acted surprised, but we reminded them of
- 23:48Speaker 3: every meeting we had leading up to it. Frankly, I
- 23:51Speaker 3: was very sad to have let them go, but it's
- 23:53Speaker 3: not sustainable. The morale has already been low, and I
- 23:56Speaker 3: know this would be a big, a big blow. It's
- 23:59Speaker 3: a small team and several of them are very good
- 24:01Speaker 3: friends with the with the person who.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Was just fired.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I'm not sure how to show up for the team
- 24:08Speaker 3: to let to let wait see now now, I'm already
- 24:13Speaker 3: struggling to let them know this really shouldn't have been
- 24:16Speaker 3: a surprise for the person who got fired. I know
- 24:19Speaker 3: I have to be vague. I don't want anyone to
- 24:20Speaker 3: be worried about their job. And then it just ends
- 24:23Speaker 3: with the question any tips for getting morale up and
- 24:26Speaker 3: making sure the team still trust us.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Wait to go back?
- 24:31Speaker 6: Was that a seven hour haircut that they gave?
- 24:35Speaker 3: I think I think it's probably a color, some type
- 24:38Speaker 3: of color.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Seven hours.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I would tell you that I don't think that Emma's
- 24:41Speaker 2: surprised at all, and.
- 24:42Speaker 3: It's like, okay, yeah, sometimes sometimes hair appointments take really long.
- 24:47Speaker 3: It depends on how what type of color you're doing,
- 24:50Speaker 3: Like definitely, if you're like bleaching it, you'll probably have
- 24:53Speaker 3: to go through it several times because the first round
- 24:55Speaker 3: of bleach probably make it look young.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And you can have a cut, you have your hair, you.
- 25:00Speaker 3: And then style, yes, so that takes a long time
- 25:03Speaker 3: time and then they're doing your hair and then they
- 25:08Speaker 3: probably styling, and then.
- 25:10Speaker 2: They can do then they can do the die whatever
- 25:13Speaker 2: the color, and then.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It's just sitting like in the hair chair from like
- 25:18Speaker 1: it like for like a nine to five, just like
- 25:20Speaker 1: sitting there just like there's like work on my head
- 25:21Speaker 1: the whole time.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It's like a long time. Yeah, well yeah, it takes
- 25:26Speaker 2: six minutes of your haircut, I think, right, yeah, it
- 25:29Speaker 2: was size and get out of there.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yeah that's crazy.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Oh gosh, all right, uh my next story you ready, Okay,
- 25:39Speaker 3: all right, let's hear it.
- 25:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:42Speaker 3: We hired a senior engineer let's call him Bob. Bob
- 25:45Speaker 3: based on a long resume and one repeated claim. Whenever
- 25:48Speaker 3: we asked how much of a project he done, the
- 25:51Speaker 3: answer was always all of it. For a small company,
- 25:54Speaker 3: that sounded perfect, But once Bob started, things unraveled fast.
- 25:58Speaker 3: His code wouldn't compile because he insisted header files were
- 26:01Speaker 3: optional quote unquote optional in hardware.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Reviews.
- 26:05Speaker 3: He'd randomly reroute boards and add components, just because months
- 26:10Speaker 3: in he still needed constant help with basic tools, and
- 26:13Speaker 3: his simple code task turned into a total rewrite that
- 26:16Speaker 3: made everything worse. That's when we realized something was off.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Later I met one of his former co workers who
- 26:21Speaker 3: casually mentioned he had written all of the code at
- 26:24Speaker 3: Bob's startup. Turns out, when Bob said he did all
- 26:27Speaker 3: of it, he meant he told other people what to do.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Manager lesson learned always ask what all of it actually means.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good advice. Yeah, so what did you do?
- 26:39Speaker 6: Oh, it's all it's all been done.
- 26:41Speaker 2: It's been done by somebody.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Yeah, what did you do all of that?
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yes, I have whites people do it. Yeah, we've had that.
- 26:49Speaker 2: And the story where the real similar The guy was
- 26:52Speaker 2: supposed to be a coding expert and he was like, well,
- 26:55Speaker 2: I had seen people do it, so I assumed, oh, yeah,
- 26:58Speaker 2: I've seen tip tiktoks about coding.
- 27:00Speaker 6: I know all about it.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Yeah three months, Yeah, I could get it done. I'll
- 27:04Speaker 3: figure it out.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I did the whole thing.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 1: That's also a common theme where it's just people over
- 27:09Speaker 1: stating what they know how to do in one way
- 27:11Speaker 1: or another, like they either completely make it up or
- 27:15Speaker 1: they go and read it and read some of these
- 27:17Speaker 1: threads for people who talk about getting jobs, and they
- 27:19Speaker 1: will straight up tell you, oh, just lie and say
- 27:22Speaker 1: you can do it all once they once.
- 27:23Speaker 2: You, here's how you wou'd you get there? They can't
- 27:26Speaker 2: fire you.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, here's how I lied on my resume and
- 27:30Speaker 3: got the job.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Wow, it's right, that's crazy, it's nuts. Yeah, I don't know,
- 27:38Speaker 2: all right. I always ask what all of it means?
- 27:40Speaker 2: How much of that? How much of the social media
- 27:43Speaker 2: you're doing now, how much of all of the social
- 27:47Speaker 2: media posting that you're doing? Now, that's what does all
- 27:51Speaker 2: of it? We're saying.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Last time, if if, if you see a snarky reply
- 27:55Speaker 1: to your snarky comment, that's Emma being snark.
- 27:58Speaker 2: That's Emma doing all of it. Yeah, that's right, all right,
- 28:02Speaker 2: But that's it for us today. That was good, good
