- 0:00Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back. Our second hour of our program
- 0:03will take you until 2:00 off the bench at that time, 2 until 5.
- 0:07Hawk Central goes tonight, by the way, Hawk Central tonight
- 0:11coming up later on this evening. Still to come, Stephen M simple
- 0:15head to Lincoln. But right now let's talk some
- 0:16baseball. He's our guy.
- 0:17Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com. One week or not quite one week
- 0:22approaching, one week in the book.
- 0:23Matt, good to talk to you as always.
- 0:25Love this segment. I want to start with ABS because
- 0:28I can't get enough of it and I'm going to.
- 0:30I go out of my way to find where CB Buckner is behind the plate.
- 0:33I don't care if I want to watch the teams or not, I just want to
- 0:38see this guy that's clearly overmatched and shouldn't have
- 0:41his job get overturned time after time after time.
- 0:44I love IBS, your thoughts? Yeah, I something I hadn't
- 0:49thought about, which I feel stupid for not having thought
- 0:51about it, but it adds an extra layer of the interactive crowd
- 0:56participation because you'll see if if somebody in the opposing
- 1:00team challenges something and then they're wrong, then there's
- 1:03a big roar from the home crowd or vice versa where somebody at
- 1:07home challenges the call and they wanted the crowds all into
- 1:09it. Like that's another extra little
- 1:12wrinkle. But I think the main takeaways
- 1:14for me is it's good to have this.
- 1:16There are so many big pitches that can change the complexion
- 1:19of that bat, which in turn can change the complexion of the
- 1:21game. The umpires don't want to be on
- 1:23the hook for those. We have the opportunity to fix
- 1:26that. It's so good that it's a media
- 1:28and doesn't take long. As opposed to sometimes when
- 1:31there's A tag on the bases and it's 3 minutes and you're like
- 1:34what are we even doing here? Just get it over with.
- 1:36It doesn't happen with this. It's just cut and dry.
- 1:39Did it hit the strike zone or not?
- 1:41It's great how fast it is. And, and, and I think another
- 1:45thing, and I've heard several broadcasts talking about this,
- 1:49you know, I, I have to flip around so I, I don't hear every
- 1:52broadcast what they say, but I have to imagine it's happening
- 1:55in a lot of broadcasts. And they're pointing out, I
- 1:57think this is going to give people a new found respect for
- 2:00actually how good the empires are because most of the misses
- 2:04every once in a while you get bad ones.
- 2:06And yet there are bad empires in general, as you said, Ken, but
- 2:11for the most part, they're pretty much right like 95% of
- 2:15the time. And when they do miss it, it's
- 2:17by what, .1 inch? So I hope that most people
- 2:23understand they're so good. By no means is this Major League
- 2:27Baseball saying we don't trust these guys.
- 2:29We're just giving the avenue to not like have them get doxed
- 2:33after a huge call and have their lives ruined.
- 2:35Anything like that. It's, hey, we've got this
- 2:38mechanism, we can fix the bad calls.
- 2:40And most of the empires seem to go with it.
- 2:42You know, like right when there's a challenge, they'll
- 2:44kind of say, all right, they're challenging it, they step away,
- 2:46they're smiling a lot of time. I I think it's great.
- 2:50Yeah, I do too. And I'm I'm glad you mentioned
- 2:52that about how the empire is receiving it.
- 2:53I'll go back to oh God, 15 years ago.
- 2:56So so Tim McClellan and the late Eric Cooper, both the Moines
- 2:59guys, they used to they were in here all the time.
- 3:01It kicks. You know, they had a show on
- 3:03Tuesday night, believe it or not, I'm side view was
- 3:05phenomenal. If you were based, it really
- 3:07was. So I remember asking them when,
- 3:09when replay came, you know, their thought they didn't like
- 3:12it a bit, did not like it, no place for it in the game.
- 3:15But very quickly they changed their tune and we're much more
- 3:20receptive to it. So I'm wondering those umpires
- 3:23that really don't aren't loving the ABS, if they'll come around
- 3:27to seeing the benefits and how this does make the game better.
- 3:32And you think about some of the historic terrible calls.
- 3:36We can think about Denkinger. We can think about Jim Joyce at
- 3:40first base on the Armando Galraga Perfect game.
- 3:43You could see how much it just tore Joyce up.
- 3:45He knew he missed it. He was accountable.
- 3:47If there's replay there, that's a perfect game and he's not on
- 3:50the hook for that. I don't think that you want to
- 3:52be umpires for the most part. You know, you have some famous
- 3:56ones that people know for being good, and there are some who
- 3:59make the Hall of Fame. But for the most part, the only
- 4:01time you talk about an umpire is to talk about how much he stuck.
- 4:04And if we can fix some of those misses, then you can avoid that
- 4:08fate to to an extent. One other thing I've noticed or
- 4:12noticed right before the year began, a couple people pointed
- 4:15this out is the incredible shrinking baseball players that
- 4:18is happening across the league. Suddenly guys that were 6 foot
- 4:22one are back down to being 5 foot 10.
- 4:24And we're seeing this happen in a lot of different ones because
- 4:27it goes by right, your measurements.
- 4:29Do I have this right, Matt Snyder?
- 4:30That this is a way that things are measured and, well, it's not
- 4:33worth it to steal an inch anymore on your baseball?
- 4:35Card. It's not, no, because every
- 4:39individual player has an exact height and that's how they
- 4:41determine the height of the strike zone.
- 4:43So the plate's always going to be the same, obviously, but the
- 4:45height, obviously Jose Altuve's strike zone is much different
- 4:49than Aaron Judges. So every player has an official
- 4:51measurement. And I actually got a chuckle out
- 4:53of that. It took me back to like my
- 4:55freshman year in high school when we looked at the football
- 4:57program the first year and I was like, why is this?
- 5:00Show me as two inches taller, like 15 lbs more.
- 5:03And my dad was like, oh, that's just what they do.
- 5:06That's what they're trying to make everybody look bigger.
- 5:08That's awesome. Good self.
- 5:10Well, let's get to let's get to the plane.
- 5:12What we've seen so far this year, again, four or five games
- 5:16into it. Just maybe a take away for two.
- 5:19Let's do the good prior to the slow start.
- 5:22What have you seen that surprised you in a positive
- 5:24fashion a handful of games into the year?
- 5:27Yeah, I mean, there's only so much we can do right?
- 5:30Because we don't want to go crazy and overreacting.
- 5:34Rangers pretty good. I mean, to start in Philly and
- 5:38then go to Baltimore and be sitting three and one right now.
- 5:42And that game they lost in Philadelphia on opening day.
- 5:45Gosh, like basically 2 swings to the bat, three run, home run and
- 5:50A2 run home run for the Phillies.
- 5:51They're right. They're really close to being
- 5:53undefeated. Impressive for me the Guardians
- 5:58to go into to Seattle and make 2 out of that series and then go
- 6:02to LA and win again. I, I don't love the roster, but
- 6:06we we can have this conversation every year with the Brewers and
- 6:08the Guardians. It's just they get as much
- 6:11possible out of the talent that they have.
- 6:13So those are probably the main ones.
- 6:16I thought the Braves were going to be a good bounce back team
- 6:19and they took two or three from what I think is going to be a
- 6:21good Royals team and they shut down what I think is going to be
- 6:23a good offense from the age. And you know, on the flip side,
- 6:27the A's OM four now, it is a really tough task when you go
- 6:31from spring training in Arizona and you're going to be home at
- 6:34Sacramento to go to Toronto and then go to Atlanta.
- 6:37So that's a tall order to start the season.
- 6:39But OM4 and not a ton of offense so far for them.
- 6:42Very disappointing. Two teams that were certainly
- 6:45under the radar but caught the eye of both the hosts here, the
- 6:48Pittsburgh Pirates and the Sacramento or just the A's,
- 6:52whatever we're calling them until they make their way to
- 6:54Vegas on two teams that we were not alone.
- 6:56There was a lot of buzz here. Slow starts out of either of
- 6:58them concerns or it's baseball. We're four games in.
- 7:03Well, on the Pirates, you can make the argument that they
- 7:06should, that they almost could have swept them back.
- 7:08I mean, they were O'Neil Cruz. If they had a real center
- 7:11fielder, they probably get that of the first on Opening Day and
- 7:14you never know how the rest of that game goes.
- 7:16And then they lost an extras when they had a lead in the
- 7:19second game. But you know, you do have O'Neil
- 7:23Cruz as your center fielder and stuff like that is going to
- 7:25probably happen. So that counts part of the part
- 7:28of the game. I, I, I thought they didn't have
- 7:32that much roster depth for me. I was a little less bullish on
- 7:35them than other people were, but you know, again, gosh, it's only
- 7:39four games and going to at Mets and at Reds start the season.
- 7:43Not the easiest thing to start the season 4 because the Mets
- 7:47are probably going to be pretty good and the Reds look really
- 7:49good so far. Took two or three from a playoff
- 7:52Red Sox team and then got the great pitching from Chase Burns
- 7:56in the Bolton last night getting that 2 nothing win.
- 7:58I'm headed to Cincinnati tomorrow for Paul's games
- 8:02against the Reds. And interesting.
- 8:04Yeah. Like, how do schemes bounce
- 8:06back? I don't think that opening day
- 8:07was fully his fault, but we can't completely let him off the
- 8:11hook. I mean, he was walking, guys.
- 8:13He wasn't getting outs. But yeah, there was tough
- 8:16contact. And yeah, there were fly balls
- 8:18that should have been caught. So it'll be interesting to see
- 8:20how he bounces back. I assume he's going to be
- 8:23dominant and amazing. Four games into actually three
- 8:26games in and I was just stunned by the way Giants fans.
- 8:29I don't know what they expect. I mean, it's the Yankees that
- 8:33are in the they're dugout. It's not like it's the Rockies.
- 8:36The Yankees are pretty good. This just in.
- 8:38But the wait, Giants fans, I mean, they he does not have a
- 8:43very long runway. If it's if if you listen to the
- 8:45fans, they do not like. How do we say his name?
- 8:47Vitello. Tony.
- 8:49Yeah. Tony Vitello, the new skipper of
- 8:52the Giants. I'm shocked.
- 8:53Four games in and they want him gone.
- 8:56Well, part of it is college guy. And then after the game he tries
- 9:01to take accountability and say which I'm good, I like
- 9:04accountability. But he said, oh, I that's
- 9:06probably on me. I shouldn't have given him a
- 9:07fire and brimstone speech. It's like, all right, well,
- 9:10these aren't kids. What do you do?
- 9:11You go into Major League Baseball players and you're
- 9:13yelling and screaming and, like, punch in the wall or, like, most
- 9:18guys are going to roll their eyes at that and be like, dude,
- 9:20we have 162 of these. This isn't college.
- 9:22You need to make an adjustment here.
- 9:24But they got the W last night. He got his win.
- 9:26He got under his belt by the skin of their teeth.
- 9:29They had that 3 nothing lead. It shrunk down to 32 in the
- 9:32night, but they got the win. Yeah.
- 9:34Like, you're going to go through bouts where you don't hit in
- 9:37that ballpark. And the Yankees pitching staff
- 9:39is among the best pitching Staffs in baseball.
- 9:41So it might have just been a bad timing thing, but I can see why
- 9:46him trying to come right out of the gates and manage like his
- 9:49college is not going to rub fans the right way.
- 9:50And again, like last night, he completely changed the lineup
- 9:53around and it's like this is 162 game grind.
- 9:57You can't react like that. But of course it works.
- 10:01So I'm sure that he'll he'll leave the line up the same for
- 10:04the next game until they lose a couple more than he'll switch
- 10:06things up again. We'll see.
- 10:09I expect them to be mediocre, just around 81 wins again for
- 10:13like the fourth straight year. A reminder once again, Mets
- 10:16weekly column with his power rankings.
- 10:18A much listened read every single week and he usually joins
- 10:22us once we get into the heart of baseball season on Mondays as we
- 10:25react to it. I thought you had a really good
- 10:27note in yours as you have the Cubs sitting at #10 and your
- 10:30updated power numbers. Pete Crow, Armstrong, three bun
- 10:33hints all last year. He's got 2 already this season.
- 10:36Just to put that in the back of the bind a little bit, maybe
- 10:39bump up that batting average and on base percentage just a little
- 10:41bit more. Overall, though, your thoughts
- 10:44on the Cubs. Love the start we saw from Kate
- 10:45Horton. Love what we saw out of Cabrera
- 10:48so far in the season. Your thoughts overall on the
- 10:50your Cubs? Yeah, there's always a wrestling
- 10:53match in my head at the start of the year between analysts and
- 10:56fan. And then from a fan perspective,
- 10:59really angry losing opening day, really angry to lose two of
- 11:02three from what looks like a bad national team.
- 11:04Of course, they kicked the crap out of the Phillies last night
- 11:06and there's three and one now. Stuff like this happens.
- 11:11I will say it kind of when Ken brought up the Giants fans and
- 11:13they like, it did cross my mind at how I felt in the Cubs.
- 11:17It's like you have the entire offseason to wait, then you get
- 11:20excited for the season and then if you're the Giants, you get
- 11:24your butt kicked for three games and look absolutely thoughtful
- 11:26and doing so. It's hard to not overreact
- 11:29because these are the only games we've had to go on.
- 11:32And you get so excited for the season and you get all the
- 11:35pageantry of opening day and everybody comes out and then you
- 11:37lay an egg. Your team lays an egg and you're
- 11:39like, why was I even excited? You go through those emotions
- 11:43and it's just we got to we got to get back into the grind.
- 11:47But for the Cubs, I would say I would much rather be 3 and one
- 11:51than two and two right now. But in the grand scheme of
- 11:53things, everything's fine. And I still think it's going to
- 11:56be a really good team this season.
- 11:57And I still think that the Cubs are going to win the Central.
- 12:00But of course, seeing the Brewers pull off that win on
- 12:03Sunday, I was like, man, they're just they're going to do this
- 12:06crap again all year, aren't they?
- 12:07So I don't know seems. Like it?
- 12:09Let me bring up the Blue Jays. I love the fact that the
- 12:11strikeout numbers. Gossman strikes out 11 Opening
- 12:14day. Cease outdoes him the next day,
- 12:16struck out a dozen. Eric Lauer, who wasn't even
- 12:18going to be in the rotation or is only going to be in there
- 12:21briefly, he strikes out nine now.
- 12:23Cody Ponce goes down last night. Bieber's a ways away.
- 12:27The Blue Jays off and running. Would you say that?
- 12:30Yeah, I think so. I mean, last night was weird.
- 12:33I know. Losing 14 five to the Rockies of
- 12:36all teams, it's probably a little jolt to the system there.
- 12:39But hey, you're, you're when you start 3 and O you have the
- 12:42luxury. You can drop one there.
- 12:44I assume they bounce back and they take the series from the
- 12:46Rockies and then they're going to be 5 and one through 6 games.
- 12:49And that is awfully, awfully good.
- 12:52Need to get the, as you've mentioned alluded to a little
- 12:55bit there. That rotation.
- 12:56You need to get healthier. The rotation between Bieber and
- 12:58you, Savage especially, but there's depth losses there with
- 13:01Barrios and and Boden Francis, though, hey, Lauer's the type of
- 13:06guy that you can plug in there. Hopefully Ponce is OK.
- 13:09That's a bummer. Did all that work back to Major
- 13:13League Baseball? And then that happens.
- 13:14And then the bullpen only can only string itself together for
- 13:18so long. But man sees increased use of
- 13:23the change up. We've hardly seen that from him
- 13:25before. If that's an added element to
- 13:27his arsenal there. I mean, we've seen him finish in
- 13:30the top five inside on voting twice before.
- 13:32That could be quite a 1-2 combo with Gossman and Seized.
- 13:35And if you look later in the season, you know what you Savage
- 13:39can do, You know what Bieber can do all of a sudden?
- 13:42That's quite a rotation right there.
- 13:44So some news from earlier today, a guy that we've been hearing
- 13:47about for the last couple of years now, Cole Emerson
- 13:50potentially making his way up now before his debut, he got an
- 13:53extension. We saw this with Jackson Cheerio
- 13:55with the Brewers, and that was kind of all eye opening.
- 13:58So we've seen it before. Maybe it's not as big a surprise
- 14:01as when Jackson got his with Milwaukee.
- 14:03But take us in a little bit here.
- 14:05And is this going to become the norm for these top flight guys
- 14:09even before they're in the majors?
- 14:11Hey, let's get them signed up for a while.
- 14:14There was a wave of them a while back and then teams got away
- 14:18from them because a couple didn't work out.
- 14:20I Scott Kingery comes to mind with the Phillies.
- 14:22There was something there and it just didn't really come to
- 14:26fruition. And then teams go away.
- 14:27I think everything goes in waves.
- 14:29So I have no doubt that teams will try to find a good price
- 14:34point. But there's also, if you have a
- 14:36top client talent like let's say Polsky for example, he's not
- 14:41going to sign like a six in eight years, $60 million deal.
- 14:44He's just not. So I I assume teams will get it,
- 14:46will continue to try and there are, there are targets you can
- 14:50always find, OK, this guy's not going to try to break the bank.
- 14:54We think he's going to can be an everyday regular for a long way.
- 14:57So let's shoot and and somebody like the Brewers, especially
- 15:00with Jackson Chario, that that looks like it's going to be a
- 15:02great deal. But I don't know if we're going
- 15:05to see it more frequently. It's just something to keep in
- 15:08mind as there are top prospects coming up.
- 15:10If it looks like he's going to be a regular, even a friend's
- 15:13All Star, maybe teams will take a shot there and say, hey, let's
- 15:17hit on something here. I know he'd already been in the
- 15:19majors for a little bit, but something like Ozzy Albee's
- 15:22where you get an incredibly team friendly deal and that can help
- 15:26you sign guys elsewhere and build around that.
- 15:29So yeah, I mean, Emerson looks like a really, really good
- 15:34prospect. So there's a chance that this
- 15:36could turn into a very, very club friendly deal, you know,
- 15:40going back 15 years or so, something like Ryan Braun, Evan
- 15:44Longoria, again, they were in the majors before they signed,
- 15:47but they were really, really early in their Major League
- 15:49stance when they signed long term deals that ended up being
- 15:51very club friendly. PCA signed one this weekend as
- 15:55well. Hey, let me ask you about the
- 15:57Cardinals. I don't think they're going to
- 15:58be very good, but they might be fun.
- 15:59I I've watched I've watched a couple of innings this weekend
- 16:03in between basketball. Obviously that Weatherholt, he
- 16:06gets your attention. Rookie playing second base.
- 16:08We know Mason Wynn is worth the price of admission on any given
- 16:12day. I'm not sure they're going to be
- 16:14able to pitch, but maybe this is a team that, look, the
- 16:18attendance numbers aren't going to be what they were, I don't
- 16:20think. But maybe this is a fun team,
- 16:23and maybe that'll give Cardinal fans something to at least have
- 16:25hope for. Look, if you're going to root
- 16:28for a bad team, I would much rather be one that can hit and
- 16:31can't pitch, one that can't hit at all, right?
- 16:34Because you don't want to watch 2, nothing, 21 losses every
- 16:38single game. It would much rather be 8:00 to
- 16:415:00 and you have a chance to come back no matter what the
- 16:43score is. Much like on opening day against
- 16:45the Rays where they gave up that Hugh Jennings that responded
- 16:48with the Hugh Jennings. Yeah, between Weatherholt,
- 16:51Herrera, when you know, there's still Nolan Gorman and Jordan
- 16:56Walker are not too old at all. They could still get things
- 16:59figured out. You could see power up and down
- 17:01that lineup for sure. And there's been very
- 17:04encouraging fans from Walker. He's still not even 24 years
- 17:07old, and Gorman's not even 26. So between all those names in
- 17:11there, yeah, it could be a very exciting offense in support of a
- 17:15staff that just can't pitch. So hey, that's always a lot of
- 17:18fun. As I said, if you're going to
- 17:20have to go through a rebuild, it might as well be a team that can
- 17:23put a bunch of big crooked numbers on the board instead of
- 17:271 where it's just pulling teeth and thinking, man, the pitchers
- 17:29have to be perfect so we can't win.
- 17:31That's just not fun. Matt, as you've known in our
- 17:34decade of conversing about baseball, I sometimes I take you
- 17:36down weird directions. So they got another one here for
- 17:38you to kick off our baseball season conversations.
- 17:41So we started talking about the ABS system and a way that's
- 17:45taking away pitch framing. But what if we go the other way?
- 17:49What if it now becomes a pitch that is a strike and now the
- 17:54catcher tries to make it look like a ball?
- 17:56And then you have them waste a challenge because of, I mean,
- 18:00could we see and these these catchers have done such a great
- 18:03job of becoming great framers and it's such an important part
- 18:06or became such an important part of the job that is going to
- 18:08dissipate a little bit here. Could we go the complete
- 18:11opposite direction? Now I'm making strikes and
- 18:14framing it to look like a ball. I had never even thought of
- 18:18that. So, you know, at some point
- 18:22there will be a team, whether it's somebody like the Brewers
- 18:26or the Rays and the way that they always try to find these
- 18:29avenues that no one else is looking at.
- 18:32The Astros under Jeff Lew now, when he first took over, yeah, I
- 18:36could totally see a team trying to figure out how to exploit it
- 18:39and re teaching the catchers. The only thing I would say in
- 18:41the near term is these pitchers are so good.
- 18:45The stuff moves so much so fast, there's hardly any reaction
- 18:49time. The catchers are robotic in how
- 18:51they train themselves and how they do things.
- 18:53It'd be awfully hard to try to change course.
- 18:57So we would have to. It would be years down the road
- 19:00when they were more used to this kind of extreme framing.
- 19:05Nowadays where you know, they used to if the ball was a little
- 19:08outside the corner, they used to just move the glove in a little
- 19:10bit or maybe like turn their hand to the side.
- 19:12Now they start way outside and like catch it with their glove
- 19:15on the move in the middle of the zone and the moving target.
- 19:19I don't know how you unteach yourself that and go to the
- 19:22opposite way. That seems like it would be
- 19:24really, really hard. But the fact that they have
- 19:27evolved shows that it's possible to to change habits.
- 19:30So maybe that was an interesting one.
- 19:33Yeah, it is last thing for me. Speaking of changing habits, my
- 19:36habit was ESPN on Sunday night. No longer will that be the case,
- 19:40did I? I watched the Guardians in the
- 19:42Seahawk are the Seahawks and the Mariners on on Sunday evening on
- 19:46Peacock, watched Hancock. Unbelievable out of him on on
- 19:51Sunday night, but your thoughts on the broadcast overall and
- 19:55what did you think? Apparently the analysts it's
- 19:57going to be revolving analyst of course, Panetti is the constant.
- 20:00Your thoughts on Peacock? What they put on on Sunday
- 20:03night, assuming you saw it. Very encouraging start.
- 20:06I think Bonetti is outstanding and it's such a good idea to go
- 20:11with one color analyst from each team because we've seen for
- 20:14years on social media fans get used to in baseball.
- 20:18This isn't like the NFL where we watch a different national
- 20:21announcer every single week. Fans get used to your regional
- 20:24guy and there's so many games. You can't expect someone like
- 20:28John Smoltz to know everything about every single team.
- 20:30You just can't. It's unreasonable.
- 20:33So you get one expert from each team in there and the fans are
- 20:37used to that guy or woman, whatever the case may be, who
- 20:42you hear that person talking to you every single game.
- 20:45That's your comfort zone. You have an outstanding play by
- 20:48play guy. You have your color guy.
- 20:50I think about for the Cubs, JD will be in the booth with
- 20:52Panetti. That will be amazing.
- 20:54J DS awesome and you get used to those guys.
- 20:58I think it is an outstanding idea.
- 21:00I wish somebody would have come up with it sooner.
- 21:02It'll be very interesting to see if they start going to that for
- 21:06the playoffs, how that works, because the playoffs is
- 21:09different. You know, usually the color
- 21:12guys, they're free to go for the playoffs, so they might have to
- 21:15earn a little extra pay. But I just speaking from
- 21:18experience as a fan, if the Cubs are on a Fox broadcast, no
- 21:23offense to John Smoltz, I would much rather see JD in the booth
- 21:26but small just because he's with the Cubs every single day and he
- 21:29knows them very well. Yes, he does.
- 21:31So it's a great. Team.
- 21:32I think it's a brilliant idea. Cardinals and Detroit Verlander
- 21:37scheduled to pitch Sunday Night Baseball.
- 21:39It's still a Peacock of when does NBC pick it up?
- 21:42Any idea? Maybe after the NBA, I'm.
- 21:43Guessing. I don't know.
- 21:44I don't know. I actually I have Fubo and they
- 21:46have a dispute with NBC so I have to be a Peacock anyway, so
- 21:50I don't know. Monday or two.
- 21:53Here's another thing I want to say about what they've done so
- 21:55far. Mariners, Guardians, and then
- 21:58Tigers, Cardinals. How cool is it that they're
- 22:00actually rotating and revolving teams instead of just having it
- 22:03be like Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers, Giants every?
- 22:06Single. Week Sunday Night Baseball on
- 22:09ESPN had really devolved into it's only a handful of national
- 22:13teams. It's nice to see something
- 22:14different. Good stuff.
- 22:16Talk to you next Tuesday, pal. Appreciate you coming on.
- 22:19As always, love this conversation with you.
- 22:21We'll talk to you in a week's time.
- 22:22Thank you, Matt Snyder. Take care.
- 22:24Good to talk to you. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com as we
- 22:27do our weekly conversation on Major League Baseball.
- 22:31You'll have to use your schedule allows check it out.
- 22:33Peacock. So Bonetti.
- 22:36He does Detroit. I wonder who.
- 22:38I can't remember who the analyst is.
- 22:39I can't either. I can't.
- 22:40I can't think. I don't get there very often for
- 22:43Tigers games. Yeah, I, I love the idea that
- 22:47they're doing. And did you check, was that also
- 22:51on that, remember the NBC Sports Network on DIRECTV?
- 22:54What was that? No, I didn't.
- 22:56I forgot about doing that. Yeah, what was that?
- 22:586 Something 6/18. Something like that, yeah, right
- 23:02around where FS 2 is. Yes.
- 23:04Because we learned that during basketball season that the games
- 23:08that were on Peacock on your DIRECTV right was a dedicated
- 23:11channel there and then you can flip.
- 23:12I wonder I'll I'll look this week.
- 23:14I will as well, potentially. Oh, it's Easter.
- 23:17It's Easter. By the end of the evening, yeah,
- 23:21you're done. Kids get the candy, right?
- 23:23They'll be having a good time. You've been up doing family
- 23:25stuff since Bright and. Early.
- 23:26That's right. Dad's going to watch a little
- 23:27baseball. Flip it on, What did you say it
- 23:30was? Cards Tigers not.
- 23:33Brutal 2 Midwest teams. I like it.
- 23:36All right, we'll take your time out.
- 23:37We'll get Brian Walton sometime this week as well.
- 23:39I'm not saying we'll have them all season long.
- 23:41You will. But who knows?
- 23:42It might be a fun team. No, no.
- 23:46Simple. Next, Miller and Condon on the
- 23:49Iowa Sports Radio Network. It's.
- 23:52Time for SIP, Stephen M Simple talks with myself and Ken on
- 23:58Nebraska football. I mean I have.
- 24:00A radio show. We have callers.
- 24:01I pay attention to my Twitter notifications and all that.
- 24:05There's definitely some. Frustration.
- 24:07We talk Cornhuskers, and you never know what else is going to
- 24:10come up with 30 years on the Nebraska beat.
- 24:16Here's Stephen M Simple. As long as they're paying me to
- 24:18talk, I'm just going to keep doing it.
- 24:21I'm Miller Condon, just passed 1:30 on a Tuesday.
- 24:25We take you until 2:00. Transplays of the day Circus
- 24:28sports sponsor. Those those coming up here in
- 24:30about 15 minutes. Let's put a bow on Nebraska's
- 24:33basketball season. Men's basketball, spring
- 24:36football has already come and gone.
- 24:38And Stephen M Simple joins us to talk spring football as he does
- 24:40each and every year. Hello, Sip Trenton Kent, thanks
- 24:43for coming on. This really caught me off guard.
- 24:45I had no idea that it the calendar had moved.
- 24:48Normally these events, I think our and I think Nebraska's been
- 24:52the same As for the most part as I when I was state like the
- 24:55third weekend, fourth weekend in April.
- 24:57The spring game comes and goes, but this year was early.
- 25:01What was behind that sip? Yeah, it is typically, it is
- 25:06typically earlier or excuse me, later.
- 25:08Yeah, mid-april to late April. What rule has said, Matt?
- 25:14Rule is that, you know, when you get all these new guys games,
- 25:20the Portal 16 kind of wanted to get them going.
- 25:25I don't know if acclimated to the right world, just just get
- 25:27them in the program, get them in football, just get them wrong.
- 25:33And then he also talked about kind of there's there's this
- 25:40stuff, there's a notion of when you start early, if you get
- 25:45banged up, you get more time to recover.
- 25:48So there's some of that. Yeah.
- 25:51It was kind of an those are the main things.
- 25:54It was very odd here, kind of odd to be done this early.
- 25:58It was odd to start that early. But they're done now.
- 26:02They're not done with football. You know, they go in, I hope.
- 26:06I don't know a lot of college football fans.
- 26:09It's kind of hard to understand the schedule, I think.
- 26:11But they they started up back work again on Monday, yesterday,
- 26:16OK, Five different weeks and they're still training.
- 26:19They still go all down there. You know, there's still a lot of
- 26:21weight training. There's still football activity.
- 26:25It's not like they shut it down. So it's a little different in
- 26:28the way they track. Quarterback position is going to
- 26:31certainly look different. Give us kind of the headlines,
- 26:33if you will, coming out of spring practice and I guess the
- 26:36big questions that still remain after you get a little glimpse
- 26:39of them. Well, the the big headline is
- 26:44Anthony Calandria is the start UNLV.
- 26:46Yep. Yeah, they brought in a kid from
- 26:49UNLV, a senior, and it's a much different look than Dylan Rayola
- 26:54because he runs. No, he's not.
- 26:56He's not run first. He can really scoop.
- 26:59I mean, on his first series, there's a third and four and he
- 27:04and he rolled to his left, didn't see anything downfield,
- 27:10just tore up field 12 yards first down.
- 27:13You wouldn't have saw that last year.
- 27:16And now he's fast. He does everything fast.
- 27:19He talks fast. He runs out on the field fast.
- 27:22He runs off the field fast, calls, plays fast.
- 27:26This, this does everything fast. They're going to run some tempo
- 27:29looks like, by the way, So that that that was something too.
- 27:37Now, I don't they're not going to be a tempo team per SE, I
- 27:39don't think. I do think you'll see more of
- 27:42that. And he's a clear cut #1 there's
- 27:44really a battle for two between. You guys might remember TJ Latif
- 27:49because he played against Iowa and then they brought in Daniel
- 27:52Kalin from Virginia, who's actually a Bellevue West kid,
- 27:56Bellevue, NE kid, so who've been at Virginia.
- 28:01So that's they're in good shape at quarterback.
- 28:04What's the knock if there is one on Calandria Sip?
- 28:09Oh, turnovers. Is it?
- 28:11Yeah. Interceptions.
- 28:13Yeah, I seem to have a. Lot his his ratio at Virginia.
- 28:17He was at Virginia before UNLV. His ratio at Virginia was 26
- 28:24touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.
- 28:30OK, yeah. Now he, he improved at UNLV.
- 28:36He was 27 and 9 there, 27 TV's, 9 interceptions.
- 28:42Kind of kind of got it under control, had a big year.
- 28:46Here's the Mount W player of the year.
- 28:48He he's interesting. I mean, he's smaller, but he's
- 28:55not. I'll tell you what, he's not
- 28:58evil When you see him at the podium.
- 29:01I mean when you see him out on the field, you're like, oh, I
- 29:03don't know if he can do this. He's so small.
- 29:06Maybe when you, when you see him in like the in a press area at
- 29:09the podium, he's put together. I think he can probably handle
- 29:12it. Offensive line a year ago you
- 29:16told us it was going to be better than I was.
- 29:18You missed on that one sip and that's OK.
- 29:20We can't get them all right. But Brendan Black and Iowa State
- 29:22guy, he's over there. How the online looking very
- 29:25difficult at times to exactly pull a whole lot of online in
- 29:29spring practice. Certainly.
- 29:30What were your thoughts on upfront?
- 29:32I hope I didn't say that. You did.
- 29:36You did I, Don't forget. Oh God, we kind of it kind of
- 29:44got better as the year went on last year, but they weren't as
- 29:46good as I that's for damn sure. I they should be better.
- 29:52They that's a way different. Look, they're going to have
- 29:55three. They brought in three guys from
- 29:57the portal. They're going to start.
- 29:58You mentioned Brendan Black, he's going to start at right
- 30:01guard. Paul Mbanga from LSU is going to
- 30:06start at left guard, right tackles, tree Baba latte he came
- 30:13in from South Carolina. So there's three guys that they
- 30:17really like. There's this start that's it add
- 30:21to add to they really like their center Justin Evans and he's
- 30:26legit. And then they like their left
- 30:28tackle who's also a transfer, but Chancellor last year and
- 30:32from Alabama, Richard, I like him up front.
- 30:36I think I like him up front on Austin.
- 30:39I don't like him up front on defense, but the they it's the
- 30:42hey, I don't want to jump ahead too much steal questions, but
- 30:46it's the same story here. It's everything is about being
- 30:52able to trying to stop the run. I mean that's and I don't know.
- 30:57I don't know. We'll just have to see on that.
- 30:59I'm not. They brought in a couple guys.
- 31:02One kid from Pit looks like he's viable.
- 31:07Maybe they got another guy from Boston College and show too much
- 31:11on Saturday. Then it's the same guys.
- 31:15I'll say this sip and I think I can speak for Trent before we
- 31:17move over to basketball. When it comes to Brendan Black,
- 31:20we we watched him as a freshman. I thought this guy's the limit
- 31:22for this kid. He was a nasty, nasty, nasty
- 31:26SOP. But then it kind of, I mean, he
- 31:28wasn't bad by any means, but he never took that strep, right,
- 31:31Trent? That's a perfect way to.
- 31:32Characterize it. We both loved him as a freshman.
- 31:35Hopefully he's got something left.
- 31:36Let's go to basketball. Sip comes to an end.
- 31:38But by all, by any measure, right, Obviously it didn't end
- 31:41well in Houston the way that the fan.
- 31:43Base wanted great well for for Nebraska fans.
- 31:46Yeah, I'm just saying by any measure, that's a successful
- 31:50season. No longer do you have to hear
- 31:51that they've never won a game in the tournament.
- 31:54That box was checked. A pretty successful year for
- 31:57Hoiberg squad, all things considered.
- 32:01Oh God. Right through here.
- 32:03I mean, yeah, they've never been won a game in the NCAA
- 32:07Tournament, you know, So getting to the Sweet 16 was, I mean, how
- 32:13it was amazing. Now, it wasn't amazing in the
- 32:15sense that Bros, they were picked 14 in the Big 10, for
- 32:20what that's worth. But then they won 20 in a row,
- 32:23you know? So, you know, the expectations
- 32:26got pretty high around here about the time they beat
- 32:30Illinois at Champaign, right? Then they, then they then they
- 32:35damn near beat Michigan in Ann Arbor without two of their main
- 32:39guys. So you know, yeah, now.
- 32:44Now you just wonder what? What next?
- 32:48Let me interrupt. Is Frager staying SIP?
- 32:52Yeah, good, good, because they can obviously build on him.
- 32:56They got Sanford for another year.
- 32:58That's huge, those two guys. Frager made some big shots
- 33:01against Iowa and Price. Sanford was unbelievable.
- 33:03But we also heard it on your station SIP and losing to Iowa
- 33:09after what the past what 10-12 years have been and everything
- 33:12outside of. Volleyball is Co host.
- 33:14Yeah, yes. Not real pleased about that one.
- 33:17I mean, how much did it sting for the fan base going inside
- 33:19their mind and getting the Sweet 16, having this incredible
- 33:23success that the program has never seen seen before?
- 33:26And then again, to have a season come to a close, losing to Iowa.
- 33:31That's kind of complicated. I think the overriding feeling
- 33:35though, what I've got. And I didn't know how it would
- 33:37be in the moment. Like, you know, as it was
- 33:39happening and it was clear I was going to win the game.
- 33:42And then in the immediate aftermath, I honestly didn't
- 33:45know how to size it up from the point of view of others.
- 33:51I don't get, I mean, that's what I'm trying to do because I don't
- 33:55get emotional about stuff. I'm paid not to, you know, So I
- 33:59I just like to hear from other people around me.
- 34:02And the sentiment I got in the in the aftermath was that most
- 34:08people were just happy with the season.
- 34:11And it so wasn't like Jake. Jake is Jake.
- 34:16I love it. I've done a show for him for 10
- 34:18years. He's very emotional.
- 34:22But I know, I think by and large, people are just happy to
- 34:27get that far. And you know, it sucked that
- 34:31they had to lose to Iowa, but I don't think it, if you're asking
- 34:34me, did it ruin what Nebraska accomplished?
- 34:37No, it didn't. Maybe in the minds of a few
- 34:40people, Some people. I don't think the preponderance
- 34:46of the fan base it it was. So I don't think it was so
- 34:50crushing that it just marred the rest of the conversation.
- 34:55I don't think that it. Last thing, do you know what Sam
- 34:58Hoiberg's going to do? Is he going to follow the old
- 35:00man into coaching? Do you know?
- 35:02Yeah, I think what what Sam is said he's going to do, Kenny, is
- 35:06you're going to try to play, you know, you're going to try to
- 35:09play pro basketball somewhere. It's not in the NBA, but
- 35:14somewhere I say that. After all, I know he's starting
- 35:17for the Pistons next year, but I, I, I was going to try to
- 35:23play. He's going to try to play.
- 35:25I didn't get that. Then then if it doesn't work or
- 35:29what he's done, he's going to get into.
- 35:31Broadcast is he? I did see him do a couple of
- 35:34interviews and I think he did a game actually, and it wasn't a
- 35:37basketball game, but he he put it on the game.
- 35:40Maybe he did a headset. He was wearing a headset for
- 35:42something. It sounded pretty good.
- 35:44Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 35:45Sip. Well, he did a women's
- 35:47basketball game that. Might probably be what it is,
- 35:48yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:50So, yeah, he he's, he's not. He doesn't want to get into
- 35:53coaching. His dad counseled him,
- 35:56counseled, counseled his boys don't get into coaching too much
- 36:00stress, which it is. But but so, yeah, he's going to
- 36:06go a different route. I mean, Sam was magnificent this
- 36:09year. Just magnificent.
- 36:10He really was true. Absolutely.
- 36:12SIP. Thanks for jumping on, putting a
- 36:14bow on it. Appreciate the relationship.
- 36:16How we do. We'll talk to you.
- 36:18Talk to you down the road. Thank you.
- 36:19Stephen M. I hope so take.
- 36:21Care, Yep you will take care. Good to talk to you.
- 36:23Stephen M Simple from 93.7 over in Lincoln where he does morning
- 36:28drive with Jake. Yes, I.
- 36:30Didn't know his name was Jake. Gets emotional.
- 36:32Jake the head Jake was. Did you play the audio?
- 36:37I Yes it was. Great, it was really good.
- 36:39We get this far. Can you imagine?
- 36:40And this was before they got beat just kind of greasing the
- 36:43skids for to get this far and there's a team, the other team
- 36:47on the floor is those God forsaken.
- 36:49They beat us in everything. It's true.
- 36:51It's they've they cost burst a lot of dreams, right?
- 36:56What is it, 10 out of 11 now in football?
- 36:59Crazy. 8 out of 11 in men's basketball.
- 37:03Yeah, in women's basketball. The only thing is volleyball, it
- 37:07is wrestling. Iowa had their worst dual season
- 37:10in decades. They still beat Nebraska.
- 37:13It's to beat Nebraska. And probably their highlight
- 37:15victory of the season came against the Huskers.
- 37:17Even on the wrestling mat. Let's keep that going.
- 37:20That's fun. I enjoy that.
- 37:21No, I I think the entire state does DC and it's.
- 37:25Even some hot Now basketball. Men's basketball is different
- 37:28because of the Hoiberg angle. Yeah, but Cyclone fans have to
- 37:31hate. You mean yes?
- 37:32Right, you can't hate it as much because of Hoiberg.
- 37:34You, but they got their nose rubbed in the carpet a whole
- 37:38bunch on the football field. Cyclone fans did by Nebraska.
- 37:42Oh sure, Cyclone fans hate them. Absolutely.
- 37:45And then the mocking applause as you're coming off the field
- 37:48after they beat 84 to 10. Yeah. 145 Trench blaze of the
- 37:53day are next. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 37:56with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:58I'm Miller. Condon, welcome back.
- 37:59By the way, the boys off the bench today at WCI Pools and
- 38:03Spas. Giving away that hot tub today.
- 38:05Yeah, believable. Like what was it, 16 grand?
- 38:08Yes, I believe so. That sounds right, yes.
- 38:10I'm right in Urbandale, Northwest Urbandale Drive in
- 38:13Urbandale. They're coming up.
- 38:15I think they're going to give it away today at 4:00.
- 38:18You can't rich to win. It's hard.
- 38:20It's closed. The contest is closed.
- 38:22This in conjunction with our 25th anniversary here at Des
- 38:26Moines Sports Station. One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 38:29All right, Trent Condon plays of the day, sponsored by Circa
- 38:33Sports. You bet.
- 38:35Both basketball games yesterday. You laid the lumber.
- 38:37You were rewarded in both of them.
- 38:40We were. We had a four in one day
- 38:41yesterday. A baseball hitting, too.
- 38:43Yeah, we hit we two out of three there or only lost those God
- 38:46forsaken White Sox pulled off a victory and ended the undefeated
- 38:51run out of the Marlins as once again we have no undefeated
- 38:54teams. Left keep rubbing that into
- 38:56who's the last team is there? How many teams are still
- 38:59winless? Oh, that's a good. 1A's Yes, the
- 39:03answer's one. That's it.
- 39:05The A's, The only team that has yet to win a ball game.
- 39:07O and four start. And everyone just beating
- 39:10everybody up. I mean, right now the Twins are
- 39:13just a game and a half back of the wild card.
- 39:14Race they're they're right there.
- 39:17Magic number. Have you calculated it?
- 39:19Too many, Yeah, too many is the number for that.
- 39:22God forsaken. They're awful.
- 39:24They're that bullpen. Yeah, it's not good.
- 39:26It is gross. It's not good.
- 39:28Yeah, I watched. Like I said, I think I got to it
- 39:31in the 4th inning yesterday on 668.3.
- 39:33I think it is now on DTV. But yeah, they're not good.
- 39:38Not at all. And they're off today.
- 39:40Are they against the Royals? They are, yes.
- 39:44Back at it against the Royals on Wednesday.
- 39:46So. Yesterday must have been
- 39:47obviously for an afternoon game. Royals home opener.
- 39:49Home opener and. They always build in that day
- 39:51after because they will lose that the gated mission.
- 39:54So we'll go through that and the Twins home opener is.
- 39:58Got to be. Friday against the Rays.
- 40:01Bailey Ober will get the ball in day Game 310 on Friday
- 40:06afternoon. We'll get a couple of day games
- 40:08on Friday, actually quite a bit. A lot of other home openers
- 40:10that'll be happening. There's no perfect solution.
- 40:12When you start the season this early, you're going to play
- 40:15games of cold weather happens every year.
- 40:18There was been games, I think it was Cleveland one year where it
- 40:21just started downpart snowing. I mean just Blizzard conditions
- 40:25and it was like the middle of April.
- 40:27I. I sat in one Opening Day for
- 40:29year number two of the Colorado Rockies when I lived in Denver
- 40:31was against the Phillies. It was snowing sideways.
- 40:34Snow inside. Was it cool?
- 40:36Cool is in temperature. Cool.
- 40:38Just cool to be there. Just cool to be there.
- 40:40We're hammered. So yeah, plenty, plenty of Coors
- 40:44banquets flowing through the veins at that point.
- 40:46Makes it a little bit more fun, but you're not going to stick it
- 40:49out for three hours. No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 40:51You know me, I don't stay anyways.
- 40:52That's true. That's true. 3 baseball plays.
- 40:55We got no college basketball. I mean, tomorrow they're back
- 40:57though. The right there's no WNIT,
- 40:59there's nothing I mean and I was trying to dive deep, but they.
- 41:03Don't get NIT and the Crown tomorrow.
- 41:05That is correct, yeah. We'll get both of them going. 3
- 41:07baseball plays all one, even money.
- 41:11The Reds get to go with Williamson.
- 41:13I know a lot of people are excited about Chandler.
- 41:15He had a great debut a season to go start number one of the year.
- 41:19I didn't. I got a nudge towards Cincinnati
- 41:21at this point, so I'll grab the plus 100 with the Reds.
- 41:25The A's got to win a game. Oh, it's.
- 41:26Today. Today is the day.
- 41:29What's Savali, who is just, I mean, you talk about that
- 41:33prototypical plug them in as your number 5.
- 41:36He's going to be fine. Not good, not great, not awful.
- 41:40He's in the right spot. He's.
- 41:41Just he's your 5th starter, you go there and that's Savali and
- 41:45he gets it done against the Bravos.
- 41:47It's going to be a big number, plus 139.
- 41:49Well, that's not as big as I thought.
- 41:50Still good? We're going to grab another
- 41:52number here, Give me Tampa. I just, there's something about
- 41:55Shane Mcclanahan that I love that that hard throwing lefty, I
- 42:00don't know if he's ever going to hit his apex, but boy, we talk
- 42:03about upside. I still think it's there.
- 42:05Now he's going up against Woodruff.
- 42:06Not an easy assignment. We'll take the plus money here.
- 42:09Tampa on the road plus 1/12 in Milwaukee tonight.
- 42:12All right, so you've got the Brewers, you've got the A's and
- 42:15you've got the Reds, all right? And no basketball tonight.
- 42:20Not dipping your toe in NBA waters.
- 42:22Nothing. Like that?
- 42:23Not yet. There was a couple that I will
- 42:26tell you the NBA in today's environment too.
- 42:29It's impossible to watch, Trent. You can't put a bet in now at
- 42:33155 like I do every you don't know who's playing and with all
- 42:36these teams tanking on top of it, it's.
- 42:38Brutal. It is.
- 42:39Told you I tried to watch on Sunday night and there was no
- 42:42other nothing on I I couldn't do it.
- 42:45I couldn't do it. Well, that's going to do it for.
- 42:48Us you got hockey tonight. I've got hockey.
- 42:51Jets in action? They are, they play in Chicago,
- 42:53so I'm going to watch Chicago at Wrigley Field and Chicago at the
- 42:56United Center Chicago kinda night.
- 43:00That's going to do it for us. Appreciate you being with us.
