- 0:00Former fitness executive Ben Midgley and his gubernatorial
- 0:04campaign filed an ethics complaint on Monday alleging
- 0:08that rival Bobby Charles team created an anonymous political
- 0:12site targeting Midgley without public disclosure as required by
- 0:16Maine law. The complaint, filed with the
- 0:18state Ethics Commission and obtained by the Bangor Daily
- 0:21News, argues that Charles campaign appears to have skirted
- 0:24campaign finance disclosure law and worse, purposefully lied by
- 0:28creating a communication that attacked one of their opponents
- 0:32and included an incorrect financial disclosure in this
- 0:35negative communication. When the Charles campaign
- 0:38thought that they had been caught, they then attempted to
- 0:41cover up their involvement by removing the website.
- 0:44Their desire to prevent a surging candidate from advancing
- 0:47to the Republican nomination clearly clouded their judgment.
- 0:51The complaint comes as the Republican primary heats up
- 0:54among seven contenders seeking to replace outgoing Democratic
- 0:58Governor Janet Mills. If you've been watching, by the
- 0:59way, any of the debates, you would certainly agree with that
- 1:02because it is starting to turn into a food fight.
- 1:06It is getting much more contentious.
- 1:08There are many more attacks crossing all over the place
- 1:12amongst the candidates in these debates.
- 1:13And, and well, now it now it's real.
- 1:17Now it's real Before they could just kind of float above it all.
- 1:19You know, they could be they're, they're, they're not going to
- 1:22devolve or descend into that kind of gutter politics, Sir.
- 1:28No, we're above that. And then once we get to 0 hour
- 1:31and people are voting and there's absentee ballots and,
- 1:34you know, decisions are being made, all of a sudden, you know,
- 1:37now is the time to remind everybody that that guy over
- 1:39there is a scumbag. Let's get him.
- 1:42You looked at the that actually been Mitchley exposed.
- 1:46Actually, you know, funny enough, I know it exists and
- 1:49didn't bother. I'm looking at it right now.
- 1:51Ben Midgley exposed. Woke Jim CEO wants to run Maine,
- 1:5827 years a Democrat. There he is, Midgley.
- 2:02Is Midgley exposed? It's Midgley exposed.com if
- 2:05you're looking. For.
- 2:05Right. Yeah, wow, what a what a evil
- 2:08looking picture of him too. Well done.
- 2:11I mean black and white. The way they doctor him up right
- 2:14and then they they make. Yeah, I'd like to see that
- 2:16original picture. Yeah, well, he shaded off over
- 2:19on to the right there. You know, it looks like
- 2:21sinister, I guess. Yeah, they get like a blackboard
- 2:23behind him, which I bet you is not the original background.
- 2:26And he's black and white and he's got a very serious that
- 2:29looks like a general corporate headshot that they've made into.
- 2:35A I just like woke Jim CEO. That's great.
- 2:40I'm I'm surprised they didn't say Jim bro like Jim bro Jim
- 2:45bro. Ben Midgley woke as F.
- 2:48Yeah, but and to to go back and refresh everybody's memory, he
- 2:53started, he was one of the people behind Planet Fitness, I
- 2:56believe, and it started his own. I can't remember what.
- 2:59Crunch. Was crunch fitness OK?
- 3:00All right, that would be his. OK.
- 3:02And both very successful. Corporate woke?
- 3:05I'm looking through the thing here.
- 3:06Corporate woke ISM It was built around DEI focused corporate
- 3:11America and now he wants to bring the same progressive
- 3:13corporate mindset to Augusta. Those are all buzz phrases for
- 3:17for conservative Republicans. DEI woke, Yeah.
- 3:21Yeah. Well, anyway, these things are
- 3:23very. I've made these.
- 3:26OK. I've made these.
- 3:27These things are as old as time. As long as the Internet has
- 3:29existed, there's been attack websites like this.
- 3:31So it's kind of par for the course.
- 3:34It's actually fairly well made, well made overall.
- 3:36I'm sure that most of the stuff inside of it is just garbage,
- 3:39but that's usually true of attack sites.
- 3:42It's just, you know, opportunistically nonsensical
- 3:44unless it's a grand planner attack site.
- 3:46I got to tell you, like that stuff is just using what he
- 3:49actually said and what he's actually done.
- 3:52This is like interpretive. That's my that's always my line
- 3:55with these like hit pieces that people drop in like oppo
- 3:58research. Like if they're dropping, you
- 4:01know, this person did this and it's true, you know, then OK,
- 4:07it's like, that's fine. Like I have no problem with
- 4:09that. And it's probably a service to
- 4:10talk about when you talk like the woke CEO thing, like that's
- 4:14definitely an interpretive analysis of his time as Aceo of
- 4:18Crunch Fitness. Like was Crunch Fitness actually
- 4:21like that? Was it not actually like that?
- 4:22Like you'd actually have to do a little bit of a digging and
- 4:26figure out what you think of it if you actually knew anything.
- 4:29So it's interpretive, it's an analytical and that kind of
- 4:32stuff I just don't really usually take very seriously.
- 4:34So anyway, so he's suing over it.
- 4:37He's suing over it. That was my story was that the
- 4:39complaint has now been filed by the Midgley campaign.
- 4:41I've been looking at the same story.
- 4:43I'm going to make it into my mix here.
- 4:45I'm, I'm trying to figure out if they actually can they know for
- 4:49sure that he created it because one of his campaign strategist,
- 4:53Charles campaign strategist doesn't remember being created.
- 4:58I, I don't know, you know well. The disclosure on it says
- 5:01independent political commentary not paid or authorized by any a
- 5:05candidate or candidates committee.
- 5:07So they are claiming to be just random, you know people.
- 5:11Oh, I just started a very professional looking micro site
- 5:14that was here to deliver very well researched background on a
- 5:20major political opponent of the front runner.
- 5:22We just randomly did this. It's like, yeah, sure you did.
- 5:25Like if this is what you believe.
- 5:27And if you think this guy sucks, like say so with your name on
- 5:31it. I mean, one of the things I've
- 5:33always believed about politics is that if you're actually, I
- 5:36mean, you know, pick whoever, if you're talking about somebody
- 5:40and you're, you're dropping negative stuff on it and the
- 5:42negative stuff is accurate and true, then you shouldn't be
- 5:45afraid of having your name on it.
- 5:47And if it's not accurate and true, then you shouldn't be
- 5:50saying it. So pick one.
- 5:53If you believe in this, throw your name on it.
- 5:55That's what I say. Back to that story.
- 5:57The Charles campaign, which took down a site attacking Mason and
- 6:01Marge, did not immediately respond to a request for comment
- 6:03from the Bangor Daily News Strategist for his campaign said
- 6:06Friday that he did not recall the site.
- 6:10The trio and real estate executive David Jones have
- 6:12ramped up criticism of Charles, the trio being Midgley, Bush and
- 6:18Mason, as well as David Jones. They argue that he promises to
- 6:22slash $4 billion from the state budget and that that is an
- 6:24unrealistic plan and that he is a divisive figure who would face
- 6:28a steeper challenge in the general election.
- 6:31Midgley's campaign manager, Lauren LePage, called on the
- 6:34Ethics Commission to review and investigate midgleyexposed.com
- 6:38and a March 26th campaign expenditure of $50.00 to a A
- 6:42Charles strategist for Godaddy's web services.
- 6:47The site was registered on GoDaddy on that same day.
- 6:51Even if the site was not from the Charles campaign, it marked
- 6:53a clear attempt to influence voters without proper
- 6:55disclosure. She wrote the site she cited,
- 6:58excuse me, the state's required language for a non affiliated
- 7:02political communication not paid for or authorized by a
- 7:06candidate. This, by the way, has some very,
- 7:10very familiar echoes of an old dispute from many moons ago.
- 7:18If anybody remembers this, you should look this up, Jason
- 7:20Taylor, just for your own, your own education, your own
- 7:25background about this, that I'm about to tell you.
- 7:29Back in 2010 when the gubernatorial race that year
- 7:33happened, same situation wide open, like 8 Republicans
- 7:36running. You had I think 7 Democrats, 6
- 7:40Democrats, 7 Democrats. You had independents like Elliot
- 7:43Cutler in that race. And Elliot Cutler started to
- 7:47become a big problem, a big thing for the Democrats in
- 7:50particular. In fact, he was the 2nd place
- 7:52finisher that year. There was an anonymous secret
- 7:56microsite that was created called the Cutler Files.
- 8:01The Cutler Files. And boy, when they've liked to
- 8:05have put some additional things in those files back then now in
- 8:09retrospect right back, but it was, you know, it's like his
- 8:12time as ADC lawyer is, you know, you know, the shady deals and
- 8:16all the, you know, this is typical attack site stuff.
- 8:19But it was there was no disclosure.
- 8:20I mean, there was nothing. It didn't even say like, hey,
- 8:22this is a whatever. It was just a site.
- 8:24Like there's nothing on it. And it became a big story in the
- 8:28thing because no one knew who did it for a while.
- 8:31We do now, but nobody knew who did it.
- 8:33And there were accusations that were go flying back and forth
- 8:36all over the place about who was responsible for it and you know,
- 8:39somebody's breaking the law or whatever.
- 8:41There was lawsuits filed, Cutler got litigious, etcetera.
- 8:44Eventually it came out that Dennis Bailey, who used to be
- 8:48the communications director for Angus King, worked for Baldacci
- 8:51too, I believe, and was the at the time campaign manager for
- 8:56Rosa Scarcelli. Remember that name?
- 8:59Anybody remember Rosa Scarcelli? I do not, but you do that.
- 9:03I think my audience might. But anyway, she was one of the
- 9:05Democratic candidates that year. So democratic in fighting here.
- 9:09Well, sort of but but he he like that was Cutler was an
- 9:12independent. So it was like Democratic
- 9:15attacking independent. OK.
- 9:17And I think it was just because Dennis didn't like Cutler.
- 9:19Like I I don't even think it was a political thing.
- 9:22I think he was just like this. Is so Cutler was independent
- 9:24then OK, he. Was.
- 9:25Well, yeah, I mean, he was a lifelong Democrat, just like
- 9:27Angus King, but he decided my pathway is easier as an
- 9:30independent, just like Rick Bennett did.
- 9:32Rick Bennett's doing the same in reverse.
- 9:33I. Just like the phrase, I'm
- 9:34independent. Just like Maine.
- 9:36It's on Angus's side right there, independent.
- 9:38The original Angus King the. Original Angus, not the third
- 9:42junior. He never goes by junior, by the
- 9:44way. Never goes by junior, but he is
- 9:47he is a junior. But it's it's the third or the
- 9:49the third how the? 3rd is the third I I by the way,
- 9:54Angus has, I think a good Angus. Little Angus has a good sense of
- 9:58humor about that because he did not give me an ounce of crap
- 10:00when he came in here and I did the interview with it.
- 10:02I. Think he's Judy or two.
- 10:04Chuckles about it, I think. I hope.
- 10:05I hope because it's in good fun, friends.
- 10:08I mean, when you have the last name King and you have 1/3 next,
- 10:12I mean, how much more aristocratic can it sound?
- 10:15You'd have to play with it. It's fun come.
- 10:17On He's not even British. He's not.
- 10:19Well, no, not that we know. Not that we know.
- 10:22Maybe he's hiding an accent?
