  Speaker 1: see the water below me rushing past between the slats

  Speaker 1: of that little bridge. And so I just couldn't move.

  Speaker 1: moment where I was so frozen, I was scared. I

  Speaker 1: was really scared. My parents were on the other side

  Speaker 1: of this little bridge and they were saying, come on,

  Speaker 1: come on, you've got to get over here. Come on,

  Speaker 1: let's go. And I wanted to obey, but I was
• 1:01
  Speaker 1: just terrified. I didn't know if that bridge was going
• 1:04
  Speaker 1: to be able to hold me. I was worried that
• 1:06
  Speaker 1: maybe my foot might go between one of those slats.

  Speaker 1: And as I look back, it's so funny because it
• 1:10
  Speaker 1: was this little bridge and it was perfectly safe, but boy,
• 1:16
  Speaker 1: it did not feel that way. We're starting out on
• 1:19
  Speaker 1: a new series where we're going to talk about brave enough,
• 1:23
  Speaker 1: what it means to have courage in your life. What
• 1:26
  Speaker 1: is brave enough? And we see so many examples in
• 1:30
  Speaker 1: God's word of people who would have told you that
• 1:33
  Speaker 1: they were scared, that they were afraid to cross over
• 1:35
  Speaker 1: into something, but all they needed was simply to be
• 1:38
  Speaker 1: brave enough to take the next step. I love this
• 1:44
  Speaker 1: little fact. You know how I like my words, my
• 1:46
  Speaker 1: fancy words. The word courage, which is often a word
• 1:49
  Speaker 1: we use to describe someone being brave enough to do something,
• 1:53
  Speaker 1: to have courage. The first part of that word comes
• 1:56
  Speaker 1: from a Latin word, cor, and that means heart. So
• 2:00
  Speaker 1: to be courageous means that you're really acting from the
• 2:04
  Speaker 1: heart because that's where your feelings are and where you're
• 2:07
  Speaker 1: making decisions and that you also are deciding what you
• 2:11
  Speaker 1: will do, even if you're scared. And so to have
• 2:14
  Speaker 1: courage means that it comes from the heart. There were
• 2:18
  Speaker 1: plenty of people all across scripture who knew exactly how
• 2:23
  Speaker 1: you and I feel when we feel stuck, where we
• 2:26
  Speaker 1: want to do the right thing, or we want to
• 2:28
  Speaker 1: try the thing that we feel like God is leading
• 2:30
  Speaker 1: us to do, but we're just so scared to take
• 2:33
  Speaker 1: the next step. There was a man in the book
• 2:36
  Speaker 1: of Judges, and his name was Gideon. Now, what I
• 2:40
  Speaker 1: love is that God calls him a mighty warrior, but
• 2:43
  Speaker 1: He wasn't really acting like he was all that mighty.
• 2:46
  Speaker 1: He was actually acting very scared because there was an
• 2:50
  Speaker 1: enemy who was in his land. And that enemy would
• 2:52
  Speaker 1: come along and just be terrible to the people in
• 2:56
  Speaker 1: the land. They would take their food. They would take
• 2:58
  Speaker 1: all the things that they needed to live. And so
• 3:00
  Speaker 1: Gideon was hiding. He was working with his wheat crop,
• 3:03
  Speaker 1: but he was hiding to take care of it where
• 3:06
  Speaker 1: the enemy couldn't see him. And that's where God sent
• 3:08
  Speaker 1: an angel to encounter him. and said, Gideon, you are
• 3:11
  Speaker 1: a mighty warrior. Now, I have to tell you, Gideon,
• 3:14
  Speaker 1: I think, felt a lot like I did standing in
• 3:16
  Speaker 1: front of that little rickety bridge thinking, God, don't you
• 3:20
  Speaker 1: see what's going on here? Don't you see this huge
• 3:23
  Speaker 1: enemy that's around me? Why on earth would I take
• 3:25
  Speaker 1: a step out and do what you're asking? Because part
• 3:28
  Speaker 1: of what God wanted Gideon to do was to be
• 3:31
  Speaker 1: brave enough to listen to God and and to go
• 3:35
  Speaker 1: confront the enemy who was being so terrible to Gideon's people. Now,
• 3:39
  Speaker 1: Gideon was doing really, in some ways, what was a
• 3:42
  Speaker 1: smart thing. He was trying to avoid getting into a
• 3:45
  Speaker 1: fight with these terrible people. But God was asking him
• 3:48
  Speaker 1: to do something more. And here's the thing. God didn't
• 3:52
  Speaker 1: give Gideon all the steps right at the beginning. He
• 3:56
  Speaker 1: didn't tell him exactly how this was going to be accomplished.
• 4:00
  Speaker 1: He just needed Gideon to be brave enough to trust God,
• 4:05
  Speaker 1: and to take the next step. Joshua 1.9 says, And
• 4:08
  Speaker 1: that's how it turned out for Gideon. The way that
• 4:11
  Speaker 1: God had him go into battle, the way that God
• 4:13
  Speaker 1: helped him win that battle was was so different, was
• 4:26
  Speaker 1: so creative than anything that Gideon would have come up
• 4:29
  Speaker 1: with on his own. And that's the beauty of being
• 4:31
  Speaker 1: brave enough, is that God will show up in the details.
• 4:35
  Speaker 1: God will show up with a better plan. But you
• 4:37
  Speaker 1: and I, we just need to take that first step.
• 4:40
