- 1:44Speaker 5: I have.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I'm all over the board today, man, Like there's just
- 1:50Speaker 4: there's like so many different kinds of things that are
- 1:55Speaker 4: happening right now. And I want to want to jump
- 2:00Speaker 4: in right with with with Marshall, you know, and and
- 2:04Speaker 4: Coach Huff Now early in the season, and I'm curious
- 2:10Speaker 4: about how you guys will will relate to this and
- 2:13Speaker 4: and and where you take it. Early on in the season,
- 2:18Speaker 4: I think everybody, not I won't say everybody, but there
- 2:22Speaker 4: were a lot of people saying him and Neil Brown
- 2:25Speaker 4: looked like they weren't gonna make it right.
- 2:27Speaker 2: And all of a sudden things change.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Now, all of a sudden, we're hearing that you know,
- 2:35Speaker 4: there's a possibility that you know, he may be he
- 2:38Speaker 4: may go somewhere else. And there's some conversation Coach Hoff
- 2:44Speaker 4: and and we're talking and and there's some conversation I
- 2:48Speaker 4: was reading some of it, like from different folks or
- 2:50Speaker 4: saying like, you know, now all of a sudden, we
- 2:53Speaker 4: don't want him to leave, or if he leaves, that's
- 2:57Speaker 4: that's not really wrong.
- 3:00Speaker 6: How is to me?
- 3:02Speaker 4: I think he has a right to make this choice
- 3:05Speaker 4: however he wants to, if he if he wants to
- 3:07Speaker 4: step out, go somewhere else. Even more so because of
- 3:14Speaker 4: and I don't mean and I don't want to say
- 3:15Speaker 4: really because but he has seen how how fickle fans
- 3:20Speaker 4: can be. And at the end of the day, I'm
- 3:23Speaker 4: I put this whole kind of thought process of firing
- 3:26Speaker 4: coaches on fan base. I put it on the fan
- 3:29Speaker 4: fans that you can't do that I can necessarily know
- 3:33Speaker 4: if you're not winning. I'm listening to you, both of y'all.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I'm listening to both of y'all gonna sit here and
- 3:38Speaker 4: say nothing.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Go ahead, Lisa, No, No, it's not on the fan base.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I mean, I really feel like, you know, he's winning.
- 3:48Speaker 6: He's doing things in Huntington and other schools are like, hey,
- 3:52Speaker 6: they're giving him the decida and you know, he's got
- 3:55Speaker 6: to listen to people I agree, And I really don't
- 4:01Speaker 6: feel like though this is on the fan base at all.
- 4:05Speaker 6: I mean, I feel like this is something that I
- 4:08Speaker 6: think Huntington wants to keep him. I really do.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I think that too. I think that too. But but
- 4:13Speaker 4: early on there was the conversation about he might need
- 4:17Speaker 4: to go. Well, I think fan bases are gonna, you know,
- 4:20Speaker 4: obviously just be fanatic. They're gonna be fans, right, so
- 4:23Speaker 4: they're gonna want to see you win. And I think
- 4:25Speaker 4: the thing that coach Huff does good is he's going
- 4:28Speaker 4: to schedule those tough games he scheduled at Ohio State.
- 4:30Speaker 4: He's going to schedule that Virginia Tech. He's going to
- 4:32Speaker 4: schedule that Notre Dame. So he's gonna see exactly where
- 4:35Speaker 4: his talent is versus those Power five talents. Do you
- 4:38Speaker 4: think do you think those games have a lot to
- 4:42Speaker 4: do with where the season has taken a turn? Yeah?
- 4:46Speaker 4: I think so, because I mean, when you when you're
- 4:49Speaker 4: measured against the best, when you're competing against the best,
- 4:52Speaker 4: that again, it's gonna let you know exactly where you stand,
- 4:56Speaker 4: exactly what you need to do good at, exactly what
- 4:58Speaker 4: your strengths are. So that way, when you come back
- 5:00Speaker 4: down to your conference play, I think you're going to
- 5:02Speaker 4: be more prepared. And I think he does it good.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I like that he does that. I like that he
- 5:06Speaker 4: plays the very best. And I think that what we're
- 5:08Speaker 4: going to have to get used to, at least in
- 5:11Speaker 4: regards to our major university's Marshall and WVU, is exactly
- 5:15Speaker 4: how do we measure success? You know, because like I like,
- 5:19Speaker 4: I'm told I've spoke about this on the streets a
- 5:22Speaker 4: thousand times. Right when you're a WVU, it's going to
- 5:26Speaker 4: be very hard for you playing in the Big twelve
- 5:29Speaker 4: to compete for recruits in Texas. It's going to be
- 5:31Speaker 4: very hard. When you're a Marshall and you're playing in
- 5:34Speaker 4: the Sunbelt, it's going to be very hard for you
- 5:35Speaker 4: to recruit for recruits in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, in Louisiana.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So your recruiting base is thrown off because you're not
- 5:42Speaker 4: playing in the back in the Big East no more. Right, So,
- 5:45Speaker 4: I think how you measure success is going to be
- 5:48Speaker 4: a little bit different. And I think specifically with coach Huff,
- 5:51Speaker 4: I mean he's pitted you know, fifteen I think fifteen
- 5:54Speaker 4: sixteen players in the NFL since his since he's been
- 5:57Speaker 4: at Marshall. So I think how we measure says whether
- 6:00Speaker 4: that's are you getting guys to the next level, are
- 6:02Speaker 4: you winning? Are you going to bowl games? Are you
- 6:04Speaker 4: graduating guys? That's going to be the measure in addition
- 6:08Speaker 4: to your WNL record, at least that before you jump in.
- 6:12Speaker 4: I just I'm going to make this case again. I've
- 6:15Speaker 4: said this a thousand times. I sit in I was
- 6:19Speaker 4: part of the selection committee who was for coach Huff and.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm telling you sitting and listening to him.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Talk about his strategy, how he was going to do
- 6:30Speaker 4: things like it was systematical and it was like something
- 6:34Speaker 4: I had never heard in my life. He's a nick
- 6:36Speaker 4: saving guy. Yeah, and so so Lisa, I'm I've got
- 6:40Speaker 4: a chance to hear this man talk about a plan,
- 6:43Speaker 4: having a step one to step whatever to get to
- 6:47Speaker 4: where he's where he wants to go.
- 6:50Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to agree with everything he said, but
- 6:53Speaker 6: I'm also going to say that Southern miss wants him. Okay,
- 7:00Speaker 6: you know he's listening to them. Of course they have
- 7:03Speaker 6: deeper in il, they have more connections with the portal.
- 7:07Speaker 6: I mean, I love Huntington. I love Marshall. I went
- 7:12Speaker 6: to school there. You know, it's it's it's my home.
- 7:17Speaker 6: But when you look at what they could offer him
- 7:21Speaker 6: compared to what hunting To can offer him besides Tutor's biscuits,
- 7:30Speaker 6: he's got to listen to them. And I think now
- 7:34Speaker 6: it used to be that we had our fate in
- 7:37Speaker 6: our own hands, like we were like, okay, whether or
- 7:39Speaker 6: not we want to keep him. But now that he's winning,
- 7:42Speaker 6: and now that he's attracting attention from these other schools,
- 7:46Speaker 6: it's not it's out of our hands. I really feel
- 7:49Speaker 6: like that. I really feel like he's kind of he
- 7:53Speaker 6: has a possibility to move on to a school that
- 7:56Speaker 6: has more resources than he had.
- 8:00Speaker 4: The Honey, And I think to add on to that
- 8:03Speaker 4: location too, Like I said, you're competing in the sun
- 8:06Speaker 4: Belt and you're if you know, Southern Misses the school,
- 8:11Speaker 4: you're right in the heart of the Southern the sun
- 8:13Speaker 4: Belt conference, right, So your recruiting base. Not that it's
- 8:17Speaker 4: going to be necessarily easy to recruit, particularly with you know,
- 8:19Speaker 4: in I L and transfer portal, but at least you're
- 8:22Speaker 4: you know you're not you know, you don't have to
- 8:24Speaker 4: sell your location I'll say that well, and and to
- 8:27Speaker 4: to that and add to that, there's no way I
- 8:32Speaker 4: think a coach moves to another school without talking about
- 8:35Speaker 4: the potential of n I L.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I mean that's the reality. Where is where?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Where are the funds that will help me make that change?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Because now we can't be crazy and assume that somebody's
- 8:49Speaker 4: not going to follow him.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. I mean in I L.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Is part of the deal. Now, It's just it is
- 8:55Speaker 4: what it is. You're not You're not taking a job
- 8:58Speaker 4: without figuring out who was the pockets, where's the money
- 9:01Speaker 4: coming from, how much he got and different things of
- 9:04Speaker 4: that nature. That that is what it is. Were you
- 9:07Speaker 4: trying to say something, Lisa?
- 9:10Speaker 6: I mean that that's why Huntington has issues with keeping
- 9:14Speaker 6: a coach, you know. I mean, let's just look at reality.
- 9:18Speaker 6: I mean, he could go there and have way more
- 9:20Speaker 6: resources and probably do as well. It's not better than
- 9:25Speaker 6: he does Huntington. I mean, let's just reality.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Let me ask this to both of you. It seems
- 9:33Speaker 4: it seems like almost every year there's something around coach tough.
- 9:38Speaker 4: You know, something is here, Is here a bigger coach
- 9:45Speaker 4: than maybe what we give him? Credit for that he
- 9:49Speaker 4: that he because there's a lot of there's been a
- 9:51Speaker 4: lot of conversation about different things around him that he
- 9:57Speaker 4: could he could go to he can get Is he
- 10:01Speaker 4: bigger than what we what we are appreciating him for.
- 10:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm gonna yeah, I.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Would say yes. And I think we have to understand again,
- 10:11Speaker 4: he comes from I mean, he came from Alabama. He
- 10:13Speaker 4: came right Nick Saban's coaching tree, right, so he has
- 10:16Speaker 4: that sort of pedigree. And I would also say, I mean,
- 10:18Speaker 4: you know, obviously Marshall isn't Alabama or Notre Dame. But
- 10:21Speaker 4: I think if you look at Marshall's facilities, you look
- 10:24Speaker 4: at what we have, what we have to offer, it's
- 10:27Speaker 4: a pretty good job. And I think even regionally far
- 10:30Speaker 4: as you know, being in the Tri state area where
- 10:32Speaker 4: you can recruit West Virginia, Huntington, Kentucky, Virginia, So I
- 10:36Speaker 4: think you do have a good base here. It is
- 10:38Speaker 4: a It is a great job. Hopefully, like I said,
- 10:41Speaker 4: I would like to see him stay. Hopefully it's not
- 10:43Speaker 4: a stepping stone job for him. But I mean I
- 10:45Speaker 4: wouldn't be mad if it was.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, Lisa.
- 10:50Speaker 6: No, I wouldn't beat mad either. I agree. I agree
- 10:52Speaker 6: with Hollins. I mean, you know, he's got to do
- 10:55Speaker 6: what's best for him.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 6: Absolutely, you know we I think our fan base lost
- 11:01Speaker 6: faith at the beginning of the season and last season,
- 11:06Speaker 6: but look what he's done for the program. I mean,
- 11:09Speaker 6: those kids love him. Those kids love him. I think
- 11:12Speaker 6: he's a great recruiter. You know, I'm with Carl. I
- 11:17Speaker 6: think some kids will follow him if he gets there.
- 11:19Speaker 4: And he's pitting guys in the NFL too, Yes, you
- 11:22Speaker 4: know he's pitting guys in the league.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yes, that post today on Facebook.
- 11:27Speaker 4: I mean, you're looking at that and you could compare
- 11:30Speaker 4: that to just about anybody. That's what I'm saying to me,
- 11:33Speaker 4: and that's what I was trying to allude to earlier.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I think when you look at success, we could talk
- 11:38Speaker 4: about wins and losses, and that's cool. When we all
- 11:40Speaker 4: want to win the conference and you know, bring back
- 11:43Speaker 4: the Chad Pennington Randy Moss days. For sure, we want that, right.
- 11:46Speaker 4: But I think if I'm a parent, if I you know,
- 11:50Speaker 4: if I'm a player, and I and that's my goal
- 11:52Speaker 4: and that's what I aspire to do, is go to
- 11:54Speaker 4: the NFL, and I'm looking at what he's done over
- 11:56Speaker 4: the past three seasons, pitting fifteen sixteen guys in the league.
- 11:59Speaker 4: That might be a selling point for me be a freshman.
- 12:03Speaker 4: And and you're being recruited there and you you hear that,
- 12:07Speaker 4: what do you think That's what I'm saying. I mean
- 12:10Speaker 4: that that would have it would have mattered where he
- 12:14Speaker 4: was at. He tells me he's got ten players in
- 12:16Speaker 4: the NFL. Where's the paper at I'm signing on? You
- 12:20Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, because if that's your dream, and
- 12:23Speaker 4: that's a whole lot of kids dreams. He but he's
- 12:27Speaker 4: the guy to go through.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Yeah, and he's taking Marshall to a Bowl every year
- 12:31Speaker 6: since he's been there. I mean, we can't we can't
- 12:35Speaker 6: argue that back. And he's successful. And I don't know
- 12:39Speaker 6: what Marshall's thinking. I know I've heard rumors that Huntington
- 12:44Speaker 6: was done, that they already have somebody in the background
- 12:48Speaker 6: and the shadows that they want there that is getting
- 12:52Speaker 6: a staff together. And you probably have heard that too.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I have heard that.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Okay, so you know, now that he's winning, we're all like, oh,
- 13:01Speaker 6: wait a minute, maybe maybe you know what we're thinking
- 13:05Speaker 6: too quickly and getting rid of him, and but you
- 13:09Speaker 6: know what I mean, I just feel like you can't
- 13:13Speaker 6: blame it on the fan fan base really, because.
- 13:17Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not blaming I'm not blaming the fan base.
- 13:23Speaker 4: But I think not just Marshall's fan base, I think
- 13:27Speaker 4: the in general fans have the ability to jump ship
- 13:33Speaker 4: in a.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Couple of losses, look anywhere, you know. I mean, yeah, that's.
- 13:38Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. As to me, I'm thinking as
- 13:41Speaker 4: a fan, I'm I don't like, I'm not upset Vikings
- 13:46Speaker 4: lose the game. I'm not upset. You know, they don't.
- 13:49Speaker 4: They don't necessarily bother me to it. But you're not
- 13:52Speaker 4: a fanatic neither. No, I'm gonna put yourself in their place.
- 13:55Speaker 4: But when you're not associated as a player, you're a
- 13:57Speaker 4: fanatic about you know, but the team. But you but
- 14:01Speaker 4: but you have but you have to think, you have
- 14:03Speaker 4: to put yourself in a place of like what is
- 14:07Speaker 4: normal in winning football games, basketball games, baseball games. It's
- 14:11Speaker 4: not like you can just go out there and you
- 14:13Speaker 4: just assume a team is five hundred and you only
- 14:17Speaker 4: lost one game or no games. You can't automatically assume
- 14:19Speaker 4: you can win that game. We see that all the time.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Fans do that though, that's what fans do. But if
- 14:26Speaker 4: there are any fans that are listening in on this show,
- 14:30Speaker 4: I'm trying to make the case. I'm trying to make
- 14:32Speaker 4: the case to just enjoy your team. It's gonna be
- 14:36Speaker 4: ups and downs to just and and it ain't it
- 14:38Speaker 4: ain't always the coaches. That's why they fans. We need
- 14:41Speaker 4: you to be crazy. We need you to be emotional,
- 14:44Speaker 4: we need you to be passionate about this. We need
- 14:46Speaker 4: you to.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Merge.
- 14:49Speaker 4: We need fans like that. We can't have melancholy, just
- 14:52Speaker 4: middle to row fans. No, I want them to I
- 14:54Speaker 4: want them to be I want them to be happy.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I want them to be mad. But you can't. You
- 14:58Speaker 4: don't have the place to put the blame on somebody. Yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 4: I think there's a perspective. I mean I would agree
- 15:04Speaker 4: with you. There there's a perspective. And like I said,
- 15:07Speaker 4: when you look at coach Huff, I mean he took
- 15:08Speaker 4: those big games. Obviously those are not only you know,
- 15:12Speaker 4: you're measuring yourself against pretty good schools, but you're also
- 15:15Speaker 4: it's a check involved in that. So you're bringing resources
- 15:17Speaker 4: back to the program. And it's gonna be a rough start,
- 15:19Speaker 4: you know, because you're gonna have guys beat up. So
- 15:21Speaker 4: that started the season is gonna be rough when you
- 15:23Speaker 4: start that way. But I think what he's proven is
- 15:26Speaker 4: that as the season's gone on that he's able to
- 15:29Speaker 4: win and he's actually got into the rhythm. And in addition,
- 15:32Speaker 4: like I said, to me, the biggest point of coach Huff,
- 15:34Speaker 4: he putting guys in that league and you can't argue.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And I'm to your valid, valid, valid point. If I
- 15:43Speaker 4: see that, and I say, I'm a Marshall fan, that
- 15:46Speaker 4: to me is having an impact on the players in
- 15:50Speaker 4: which you touch, and that is that is greater than
- 15:55Speaker 4: a win a bowl game to me at the end
- 16:00Speaker 4: of the day, if you're touching each one of them.
- 16:03Speaker 6: But this is you're you're talking about the educated fan. Yeah,
- 16:10Speaker 6: the fan is in the sands to he'll win. They
- 16:13Speaker 6: want to see their team wins. They're not looking at
- 16:15Speaker 6: who the guy got in the NFL. They're not looking at,
- 16:18Speaker 6: you know, the connection he has with the players. The
- 16:21Speaker 6: run of the mill fan, not the educated fan, is
- 16:25Speaker 6: out there to see the Herd have a victory. And
- 16:30Speaker 6: that's the difference. That's the difference I think, and I
- 16:34Speaker 6: don't know what's going to happen. I wish him well.
- 16:37Speaker 6: I think he I think he's been an awesome asset
- 16:40Speaker 6: to Marshall Athletics. I hope he's face. But you know what,
- 16:45Speaker 6: I can't blame the guy if he gets.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Do you let me ask you this, do you think
- 16:49Speaker 4: he goes? Do you think if if he's offered the
- 16:51Speaker 4: position at Southern Miss, do you think he takes it
- 16:53Speaker 4: and goes? Just speculation?
- 16:57Speaker 6: Okay, okay, because.
- 16:58Speaker 2: It's a it's a rebuild a game.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, I really feel like speculation with it's an upgrade.
- 17:09Speaker 6: It really is. I mean, I don't want to say
- 17:11Speaker 6: that it's not, you know, I don't. I don't want
- 17:14Speaker 6: to put Marshall down, but I feel like it's upgrade
- 17:17Speaker 6: for him. And I feel like he's got more resources
- 17:20Speaker 6: at that level. And that's that's where I think he
- 17:24Speaker 6: might jump ship.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Huh. But now their record if I if I if
- 17:29Speaker 4: I look that up right, they don't have a winning record,
- 17:32Speaker 4: So it's it's still a rebuild. And and but again, okay,
- 17:39Speaker 4: I buy into the resources. But my question to you
- 17:45Speaker 4: would be, do I want to go through this process. Again,
- 17:49Speaker 4: I want that's not and that's my point. I mean,
- 17:51Speaker 4: because like I said, again, you you kind of got
- 17:53Speaker 4: things rolling at Marshall, and I can see a situation
- 17:56Speaker 4: in Marshall in the next couple of seasons they can
- 17:59Speaker 4: have that you know, nine and three, they can be
- 18:01Speaker 4: at ten and two. You know, they could really be
- 18:04Speaker 4: propelled themselves, maybe in the top twenty five, top fifteen.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And now you go to a situation again to your point, Lisa,
- 18:10Speaker 4: you got more resources down there, You're in a better locale,
- 18:14Speaker 4: but got to start all over, gotta start off, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 4: I mean, is that worth it?
- 18:19Speaker 6: I will say this, Marshall's gonna pony up. They got
- 18:23Speaker 6: to take care of him. They've got to reassure him that, Okay,
- 18:27Speaker 6: we've got your back, we want you here, we want
- 18:29Speaker 6: you the long term. We're going to do things to
- 18:33Speaker 6: keep you here. I mean, there's so many scenarios in
- 18:37Speaker 6: the in this whole debaccle in my opinion, but I
- 18:42Speaker 6: wouldn't be surprised if be jump shipped. Honestly, that's just yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I mean again, I can't necessarily argue that, but I
- 18:51Speaker 4: think there is I don't think it's clear cut. I
- 18:54Speaker 4: think there's things to consider if you're you know what
- 18:56Speaker 4: I'm saying on both sides, I say and huff because
- 19:00Speaker 4: I started to start over. It's tough man.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 4: And and even with the resources, you still you still start. No,
- 19:08Speaker 4: you still start because you're still competing in n I
- 19:10Speaker 4: l transferport, You're still competing.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 6: You know, maybe he wants to challenge. Maybe that's how
- 19:15Speaker 6: he's built.
- 19:17Speaker 4: I can make that case. I could see that. I
- 19:19Speaker 4: could see that in him too, that like, hey, I
- 19:22Speaker 4: did it here and I can go somewhere else. And
- 19:25Speaker 4: if I'm going to have maybe more resources, why don't
- 19:28Speaker 4: I go there?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Because it make it be quicker, a quicker process there than.
- 19:32Speaker 4: It was here.
- 19:34Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I don't know. Well, I'll say this, and I'm curious
- 19:38Speaker 4: with what you both say and how you respond to it.
- 19:42Speaker 4: For Marshall, I hope he stays. I think, Yeah. I
- 19:48Speaker 4: think for the players who have had a chance to
- 19:52Speaker 4: play for him and understand who he is and how
- 19:56Speaker 4: he operates, I think a challenge of an new coach
- 20:01Speaker 4: I think would be extremely difficult. And I don't know
- 20:05Speaker 4: how I don't leave and follow him. Yeah, And I
- 20:09Speaker 4: think I like he you know, he has a lot
- 20:10Speaker 4: of local kids. I think if you look at the
- 20:12Speaker 4: pain Brothers, the running back to the tight End, you
- 20:15Speaker 4: look at the kids he's got from Cabo Mill ind
- 20:17Speaker 4: the Spring Valley. I would really love to see, you know,
- 20:21Speaker 4: you know, our local in state guys really, you know,
- 20:26Speaker 4: consider Marshall, you know, our elite talent here because I think,
- 20:30Speaker 4: you know, we can really build and I like kind
- 20:32Speaker 4: of I just like what he's done with you know,
- 20:33Speaker 4: some of our in state talent. So I would hope
- 20:36Speaker 4: he stays. But again, I would understand if he left
- 20:39Speaker 4: going Green Pass, particularly if the check is bigger. Now,
- 20:41Speaker 4: if that check bigger, you know, like to point, people
- 20:45Speaker 4: got a pony up, so and that's gonna be that
- 20:47Speaker 4: might be tough challenge for Marshall at this juncture.
- 20:53Speaker 6: I'm with you. I'm with you, guys. I mean, I
- 20:55Speaker 6: think he's the best thing that's happened. I really hated
- 20:58Speaker 6: the way Doc left, you know that that upset me.
- 21:02Speaker 6: But then when he came in and did what he did,
- 21:05Speaker 6: I felt like it was a good move in the
- 21:07Speaker 6: in the long run. But I'm like you, guys, I
- 21:11Speaker 6: really feel like that Huntington's gotta they've they've got to
- 21:15Speaker 6: show him that they that you're our guy. You're our
- 21:19Speaker 6: guy and in it for the long haul, and we
- 21:21Speaker 6: want to keep you here. So we'll see how it
- 21:24Speaker 6: pans out. I don't know, but I mean that that's
- 21:28Speaker 6: a lot to ask in this day and age with
- 21:31Speaker 6: n I L and transfer portal, We've all talked about
- 21:34Speaker 6: that many many a time. Not to beat the dead horse,
- 21:36Speaker 6: but you know, you go where your opportunities and your
- 21:42Speaker 6: resources are.
- 21:43Speaker 2: We'll see best coach since Bob Preuitt.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Uh. I just asked the question, second, is he's the
- 21:58Speaker 4: second best coach? It could be the third. You may
- 22:01Speaker 4: say it's the third. I mean I think that's still
- 22:03Speaker 4: it's still early kind of to say that. I mean
- 22:05Speaker 4: he's three seasons in, right, that is that. Yeah, I
- 22:07Speaker 4: think it's three seasons in. So, like I said, I
- 22:09Speaker 4: think that's early because I mean it's harder like because
- 22:12Speaker 4: I think Doc has some pretty pretty good years. Yeah,
- 22:15Speaker 4: but like I said, I mean three years and you're
- 22:17Speaker 4: putting that many guys in the league. To me, that
- 22:19Speaker 4: just that stands out to me. That's what gets me.
- 22:22Speaker 4: That's what gets me. That's what makes it I think
- 22:25Speaker 4: so relevant to what he's actually doing and what these
- 22:29Speaker 4: kids like, whether he can bring that that caliber of
- 22:33Speaker 4: a player in, or he can bring a player in
- 22:36Speaker 4: and develop them to that level, whatever whichever one of
- 22:39Speaker 4: those it is, and he's still producers. And that's why
- 22:41Speaker 4: I like Marshall highlighted that. I'm actually like, I like
- 22:44Speaker 4: that they put that out there because that's relevant. It's relevant,
- 22:47Speaker 4: and it's like I said, if you're a kid, if
- 22:49Speaker 4: you're talent, and you're really, like I said, to your point, Lisia,
- 22:52Speaker 4: not Lisa, to your point, if you're not only an
- 22:56Speaker 4: educated fan, but you're also an educated parent and player,
- 22:59Speaker 4: then you're gonna realize that, right.
- 23:01Speaker 6: So yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean, I really feel
- 23:05Speaker 6: like he could bring the players in, the quality players.
- 23:08Speaker 6: It's that, like like you just said, the ones that
- 23:11Speaker 6: understand what he can bring to the table. But I
- 23:19Speaker 6: just don't know. I don't know how this is going
- 23:20Speaker 6: to play out. I see, I really like him, but
- 23:26Speaker 6: things to me look a little grim. I mean, I
- 23:28Speaker 6: really I don't know if and keep him. I really don't.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I don't think. I don't think. I don't think he'll stay.
- 23:36Speaker 4: I don't that that's my fine after this season? You
- 23:38Speaker 4: think he's Yeah, I think if there's any particular opportunity
- 23:42Speaker 4: that he can get this season, I think I think
- 23:45Speaker 4: he goes because I think he may have. I think
- 23:49Speaker 4: in this season I think it may have maybe he
- 23:51Speaker 4: was kind of shocked of all the kind of outside
- 23:54Speaker 4: noise or is it just like you know, you just
- 23:58Speaker 4: he might have played it off. He might, But you just.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Want to go bigger. I mean that bigger goals.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Because yeah, because look, I've done this. I came here
- 24:05Speaker 4: and I've done this here. Yeah, right, I can. So
- 24:09Speaker 4: I'm not afraid of that team that's got to losing record.
- 24:12Speaker 4: We can rebuild there. I rebuild that. I come right
- 24:16Speaker 4: after Marshall and I go right there and rebuild that.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Then you might be Alabama talking about big. Now you're
- 24:22Speaker 4: talking about a big house to go to. Yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 6: How old is Top? How old is he? How old? Top?
- 24:30Speaker 4: Forties? Really forties?
- 24:31Speaker 2: I was going to think early forties when I was
- 24:33Speaker 2: a young. Yeah, he's not older, girl.
- 24:36Speaker 6: He's got plenty of time to climb that ladder. So,
- 24:38Speaker 6: I mean, you know, it's not like he's you know,
- 24:41Speaker 6: in his fifties or you know, looking to retire somewhere.
- 24:45Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Yeah, he's still on that track.
- 24:48Speaker 4: But I but I say, man, the money they're giving
- 24:51Speaker 4: these coaches, and not only just the money that you're
- 24:54Speaker 4: getting for you know, if you're winning losing, but if
- 24:56Speaker 4: you get to a point where you have some big wins,
- 24:59Speaker 4: you go to this big Who I mean about money? Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 4: I mean you look at what happened, like Jimbo Fisher
- 25:03Speaker 4: right where you're you know, you did good, you want
- 25:06Speaker 4: national champions The things kind of fell off the rail.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I mean it's buyout was like fifty sixty million. You
- 25:11Speaker 4: know what I'm saying. So if I was a coach,
- 25:13Speaker 4: I might be playing for the for the buyer. Let
- 25:15Speaker 4: me go ahead and get let me go ahead and win,
- 25:16Speaker 4: let me go ahead, get some depthies under my belt
- 25:18Speaker 4: in the National Championship. Then I'm just sit back. Y'all
- 25:21Speaker 4: gotta buy me out here, y'all gotta fire me, and
- 25:24Speaker 4: I need that sixty seventy million dollars bout.
- 25:26Speaker 6: I was just like college, just like, show me the money.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I'm just saying it's there and you kind of have to.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I'm thinking that you rushing back. You've seen rushing back. Yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 4: I think at that kind of level when you're in
- 25:39Speaker 4: that level. It is about the money because you're coaching.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Your coaching is not in question. It's about how much
- 25:47Speaker 4: will you pay me to come and coach your team? Yeah? Man, So,
- 25:51Speaker 4: like I said, this money all the way around that thing,
- 25:54Speaker 4: from your salary to your buyout, to your to your
- 25:56Speaker 4: nil deals, to your endorsements and everything like that. Right, So, man,
- 26:00Speaker 4: So I ain't mad at him, man at all. Yeah,
- 26:05Speaker 4: all right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna switch it.
- 26:07Speaker 4: I know we're probably gonna end up going to a
- 26:10Speaker 4: break before we kind of jump into it. But high
- 26:14Speaker 4: school football, Yes, high school for me. Okay, we know,
- 26:22Speaker 4: we know, we know. It's it's it's win or go home. Yeah, okay,
- 26:28Speaker 4: So okay, so I just got this the signal. Man,
- 26:32Speaker 4: we're getting ready to take a break. I'll be right back.
- 26:35Speaker 4: All right, all right, we'll be right back.

- 27:35Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
- 27:37Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen. Uh, this is Carl Lee
- 27:41Speaker 4: and I got Hollis Lewis, and I think we may
- 27:44Speaker 4: still have Lise Odi on the phone.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I'm still here, Okay, all right, okay, high school football, man,
- 27:59Speaker 5: it is a little little bit of everywhere.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Well let me say this too, that the playoffs have started.
- 28:04Speaker 4: So it started I think last week after we had
- 28:06Speaker 4: a conversation about the Supreme Court rulers. So it's back
- 28:10Speaker 4: on last week. And what I found out too, is
- 28:12Speaker 4: that every two years. So actually the four A class
- 28:16Speaker 4: that only currently has sixteen teams that actually won't be
- 28:20Speaker 4: changed next year. So they'll they'll I think the rules
- 28:23Speaker 4: as it stated is they'll change every two years, so
- 28:26Speaker 4: we'll look for a change in twenty twenty six possibly
- 28:29Speaker 4: to you know, expand that thing out. All right, well,
- 28:32Speaker 4: let me ask this question. Okay, so let's say if
- 28:36Speaker 4: I'm Triple A and I win Triple A championship two
- 28:39Speaker 4: years in a row, is that is that the kind
- 28:42Speaker 4: of change they're looking at. No, that doesn't really I
- 28:45Speaker 4: don't think that's gonna matter. But I think I think
- 28:47Speaker 4: how they're going to do it is simplify. They're just
- 28:49Speaker 4: going to do it by enrollment, I would imagine. Again,
- 28:51Speaker 4: that's just my educated guess that when they go to
- 28:54Speaker 4: change it again, which I think they have to expand
- 28:56Speaker 4: that four A class at least at least to get
- 28:58Speaker 4: twenty twenty five teams in there, it's gonna be strictly
- 29:00Speaker 4: based on a roll, but they're not gonna fool with
- 29:02Speaker 4: no complex formula that's vague and maybe even overly broad
- 29:08Speaker 4: I would hope, so yeah, I would hope. So yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 2: It's just my speculation, but I don't know.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Yeah, we've had or I shouldn't say we've had, but
- 29:18Speaker 4: high school football has had a has had an interesting
- 29:21Speaker 4: like weekend of can we call it drama? Yeah?
- 29:27Speaker 2: Always something Yeah, And.
- 29:33Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna speak specifically for myself. When it
- 29:36Speaker 4: comes to dealing with referees, there is zero chances of
- 29:44Speaker 4: you ever having any impact on an official. Zero. You
- 29:49Speaker 4: can yell, you can cuss, you can threaten, you can
- 29:53Speaker 4: do all of that, but there's zero impact that you're
- 29:58Speaker 4: gonna have on a game. They're gonna call the.
- 30:02Speaker 6: Game, right, I mean, if anything, they're gonna rule it,
- 30:07Speaker 6: they're gonna hold it against you.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Right, Well, did you did you all see the Yukon game,
- 30:12Speaker 4: the basketball game. I saw a clip and look, I'm
- 30:17Speaker 4: telling you like it was. It was out of control.
- 30:22Speaker 4: I mean, the coach was going crazy, they were making
- 30:26Speaker 4: they were calling out and again I'm not a basketball player,
- 30:31Speaker 4: but if if the official makes that call. This was
- 30:36Speaker 4: like a weekend of like the reality of officiating and
- 30:41Speaker 4: what can you what? Because I guess my question is
- 30:43Speaker 4: is you can't do anything about it? Why are we
- 30:47Speaker 4: why the only thing we're doing, The only thing we're
- 30:50Speaker 4: doing is getting some kind of a technical, a technical
- 30:55Speaker 4: that ends up causing.
- 30:56Speaker 6: You to lose the game, right, right right?
- 30:59Speaker 4: And now you talk about a coach, what's a coach
- 31:02Speaker 4: tell you as a player about getting a technical? How
- 31:04Speaker 4: what does he say to you about stay in Colm,
- 31:06Speaker 4: You gotta stay calm, you can't get upset. But when
- 31:10Speaker 4: I see you do it and you get a tacked
- 31:13Speaker 4: and we lose the game, what example are you getting me?
- 31:17Speaker 4: I think there's room if you are a coach and
- 31:21Speaker 4: you are experiencing something like Dan Harley experience, where you're
- 31:24Speaker 4: looking at just a series of bad calls you as
- 31:27Speaker 4: a coach, it's almost like I have to stand up
- 31:31Speaker 4: for my players, and I have to and at that point,
- 31:34Speaker 4: I'm almost allowed to lose my coup to voice my
- 31:38Speaker 4: opinion to the referees, and I have to make a
- 31:40Speaker 4: statement to like, hey guys, this ain't I'm gonna handle this.
- 31:44Speaker 4: I'll take it on, I'll take the text. I'll get
- 31:46Speaker 4: kicked out, i'll get fined, but I have to say
- 31:49Speaker 4: something to let these referees. Let the referees, let the conference,
- 31:53Speaker 4: like whoever commissioners, let whoever know that this is wrong
- 31:56Speaker 4: and we can't do this, and they have to fix
- 31:57Speaker 4: it during endgame. So you have to say I think
- 32:01Speaker 4: in that situation, you got to say something and it
- 32:04Speaker 4: might and it might cause you to get kicked out,
- 32:05Speaker 4: and I think your players are going to respect. Hey, hey,
- 32:07Speaker 4: coach roll for us on that one. Okay, Lisa and.
- 32:12Speaker 6: I agree to a point with Hollis, But I also
- 32:16Speaker 6: think those referees they're not paid enough to to really
- 32:21Speaker 6: call a game in favor of one team or another.
- 32:23Speaker 6: I really think they're out there doing the best they can.
- 32:26Speaker 6: And you may agree or disagree with what they call,
- 32:29Speaker 6: but I really feel like what we've got out there,
- 32:32Speaker 6: they're they're they're not biased. I mean, unless you want
- 32:36Speaker 6: to go down this rabbit hole of conspiracy theory and say, well,
- 32:39Speaker 6: you know they were for this team or just this
- 32:42Speaker 6: team or whatever. I really feel like those referees are
- 32:45Speaker 6: out there doing the best they can, and I don't
- 32:48Speaker 6: I mean, you can, you can voice your concerns. You
- 32:51Speaker 6: can say, Okay, I don't give this car, or you know,
- 32:54Speaker 6: I agree with just a whatever, But I don't feel
- 32:57Speaker 6: like they're out there trying to sabotage game. I don't
- 33:00Speaker 6: see that.
- 33:01Speaker 4: I agree with that. I don't think they're purposely trying
- 33:04Speaker 4: to sabotage games. But just like a team, a coach
- 33:07Speaker 4: or whoever, they can have a bad terrible night. I
- 33:10Speaker 4: think refres have a bad terrible night too. Agree, But
- 33:14Speaker 4: and they're bad or terrible night may cast it you
- 33:17Speaker 4: the game. So so if I'm the coach and you're
- 33:20Speaker 4: having just an awful night calling this game, you're missing
- 33:23Speaker 4: everything that's in front of you. I gotta say something.
- 33:27Speaker 4: But if you, as the coach, are having a bad night,
- 33:30Speaker 4: or you and or we are talking about but but
- 33:33Speaker 4: and or your players having your your star players having
- 33:36Speaker 4: a bad we what do we say? Everybody's everybody's that's
- 33:40Speaker 4: that's possible.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Everybody else haveivale.
- 33:43Speaker 4: If I'm having a bad night or my players are
- 33:45Speaker 4: having a bad night, then then we just lost the game. Right.
- 33:49Speaker 4: But if I'm having a good night, if I have
- 33:51Speaker 4: a miniocre night, and now my refs, who are supposed
- 33:54Speaker 4: to likely to say it's supposed to be unbiased, right,
- 33:57Speaker 4: who is supposed to be impartial, and you're having a
- 33:59Speaker 4: bad night, that's gonna cost me outside of what I
- 34:02Speaker 4: can control. I gotta say something to you and you say, okay.
- 34:07Speaker 6: And you know I mean, as a coach, how do
- 34:09Speaker 6: you know that? I mean, unless you you have the
- 34:12Speaker 6: TV in front of your face, how do you know
- 34:15Speaker 6: that that that they're really that bad a call?
- 34:17Speaker 4: We we know you donet been on the sidelines, coach,
- 34:21Speaker 4: and you know you know, but I don't say nothing.
- 34:24Speaker 4: That's fine that you talking about reasons, but were talking
- 34:26Speaker 4: about whether you say some or not. But you know
- 34:28Speaker 4: that referees is stinking it up that night. And if
- 34:30Speaker 4: I know it, what's the benefit of me getting a fifteen?
- 34:33Speaker 4: Because it's about It's not about it ain't even about
- 34:37Speaker 4: that game, particularly in the game sport like basketball, where
- 34:39Speaker 4: you can lose a couple of games. All right, that's
- 34:40Speaker 4: that's fine. It's about the perception to your players. Because
- 34:45Speaker 4: your players know you they haven't they stinking it up.
- 34:47Speaker 4: The fans know they stinking it up. The coach know
- 34:49Speaker 4: the refereees is stinking it up this night. And as
- 34:52Speaker 4: a and as a as a coach, I got a
- 34:54Speaker 4: ride for them. Particularly if you're sticking it up and
- 34:57Speaker 4: all the calls is going against me. Here's what I'm
- 35:00Speaker 4: do and and at least he's so locked in, I'm
- 35:03Speaker 4: gonna just address this to you, all right, this is
- 35:06Speaker 4: what I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna call a time out,
- 35:10Speaker 4: I'm gonna bring my team over, and I'm gonna tell
- 35:13Speaker 4: my team, Okay, look, this is not it's not going
- 35:19Speaker 4: our way. This is not going our way.
- 35:21Speaker 2: The calls are not gonna go our way.
- 35:23Speaker 4: But there's a place in time in life that you're
- 35:25Speaker 4: gonna be in a situation that life is not gonna
- 35:27Speaker 4: point you in the right direction, and you don't get
- 35:30Speaker 4: a chance to fight your way out of that. You
- 35:32Speaker 4: have to rethink everything that you're doing and get back
- 35:35Speaker 4: on some track that will get you going when you're
- 35:37Speaker 4: doing to I feel you you're right on that, and
- 35:39Speaker 4: I ain't saying you not right, all right, But what
- 35:42Speaker 4: I'm saying is that particularly let's just say this, say this,
- 35:45Speaker 4: and I was at a game recently and I won't
- 35:47Speaker 4: call the the the teams or anything, that I was
- 35:50Speaker 4: at a game recently, and it's ref I'm not saying
- 35:54Speaker 4: he was picking on this particular player because this picture
- 35:56Speaker 4: say he's rowdy, he's a passionate guy, right, but the
- 36:01Speaker 4: calls got a little tiki tac. And I'm saying at
- 36:04Speaker 4: that point, you as the coach, you gotta ride for
- 36:08Speaker 4: your team. You gotta ride for that player. Because everybody's
- 36:11Speaker 4: accountable on the field, is there, everybody on the court,
- 36:15Speaker 4: Rather though, Lisa, listen to me, Now, there has to
- 36:22Speaker 4: be a place in there where you have to be
- 36:28Speaker 4: the example because and to me, I'm thinking, I'm going
- 36:33Speaker 4: to try to be the example. That's I don't care
- 36:36Speaker 4: what the call is now, I don't care how bad
- 36:38Speaker 4: it is because I can, I can yell and scream
- 36:42Speaker 4: and I have I know for a fact, I've had
- 36:44Speaker 4: one hundred pass interferences and I probably only had I
- 36:46Speaker 4: probably only really had fifty. But what was I going
- 36:49Speaker 4: to do? What was I going to do? But I
- 36:55Speaker 4: say this, you're you're right ninety percent of the time.
- 36:59Speaker 4: That's the right mindset and that's the right thing to do.
- 37:02Speaker 4: I'm talking about in those five to ten percent of time,
- 37:05Speaker 4: like what Dan Hurley experienced, he should have been going crazy.
- 37:08Speaker 4: Who he should have been gonna cause he was because
- 37:11Speaker 4: he lost the game. And that's lit he lost the game.
- 37:13Speaker 4: You win the locker room. You win the locker room.
- 37:16Speaker 4: I don't know you're gonna win, and I'm telling you
- 37:18Speaker 4: you're gonna win. You you lose the game, fine, you
- 37:21Speaker 4: get fine, Fine, you may even get suspended, Fine, but
- 37:24Speaker 4: you're gonna win. The boys or the women, they gonna
- 37:27Speaker 4: ride for you like Coach ride for us.
- 37:30Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 37:30Speaker 4: In moments like this, it ain't about the game, it
- 37:33Speaker 4: ain't about the winner losses, it ain't about nothing else.
- 37:35Speaker 2: But you're gonna catch that that locker room you won
- 37:38Speaker 2: him for the.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Rest of the year. And I guarantee you from this game,
- 37:41Speaker 4: they are gonna ride harder for Coach Hurly than they
- 37:44Speaker 4: ever rolled before. That's what I'm saying. Moments like this,
- 37:47Speaker 4: you win the locker room, and that's what you And
- 37:49Speaker 4: that's why we've seen Bob Knight get kicked out, kick
- 37:53Speaker 4: chairs go crazy. We seen and every time, not every time,
- 37:56Speaker 4: some of that stuff he was, you know, he was
- 37:57Speaker 4: probably just being too emotional. But in those special moments
- 38:01Speaker 4: where really the referees really was sticking it up and
- 38:03Speaker 4: he had a legitimate right, he won them boys, he
- 38:06Speaker 4: won the locker room. That's what that moment was about.
- 38:09Speaker 4: That's a locker room win. I'm selling him right down here.
- 38:12Speaker 4: I'm preaching to him now. I'm preach to you now, but.
- 38:19Speaker 6: I'm gonna preach back them.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Okay, you may.
- 38:23Speaker 6: Have won the locker room, but what kind of example
- 38:26Speaker 6: did you set for those boys? Okay, to the next game.
- 38:30Speaker 6: They go out there thinking, Okay, you know what I mean,
- 38:32Speaker 6: I may mess up. I mean I may you know here,
- 38:35Speaker 6: I might, I might just do a little personal foul
- 38:37Speaker 6: here and there because coach coach will take care of it.
- 38:40Speaker 6: I mean, there's the other side of it. I understand
- 38:43Speaker 6: what you're saying, hollis that you know you win the
- 38:45Speaker 6: players that they feel like coach has your back. But
- 38:48Speaker 6: you also have to teach respect for I don't want
- 38:54Speaker 6: to say authority, but respect.
- 38:57Speaker 4: So yeah, that's that's that's authorities, right and and so you.
- 39:02Speaker 6: Know, yeah, you know that they may be all fired up,
- 39:04Speaker 6: but they're kids. And in the ultimate lesson of life
- 39:09Speaker 6: as a coach, do you teach kids to respect what
- 39:14Speaker 6: is going on in the game? And you learn that
- 39:18Speaker 6: these reps, yeah, they suck, they think tonight, but you
- 39:22Speaker 6: know what, the in the overall picture of it, we
- 39:25Speaker 6: are going to be the better person or overcome it.
- 39:28Speaker 6: You know, what if you lose a game because of calls,
- 39:32Speaker 6: you probably shouldn't won a game anyway.
- 39:34Speaker 4: But but I think, but I think and to your point,
- 39:37Speaker 4: and I think everything is in context, right, I think
- 39:40Speaker 4: he would be able to and I think he probably
- 39:42Speaker 4: did explain himself in totality like look, this is the reasonable,
- 39:45Speaker 4: Well this ain't the example. But you know, I think
- 39:48Speaker 4: that I'm sure we are allowed. We are allowed to,
- 39:52Speaker 4: like I said, if that's not your motive, Operandez, you're
- 39:55Speaker 4: allowed to have those moments. And I think because we're
- 39:58Speaker 4: talking about kids, these are grown in too and grown women, right,
- 40:01Speaker 4: I think they're gonna understand in that moment, right, they
- 40:06Speaker 4: understand that, like why you reacted that way in that
- 40:09Speaker 4: specific moment, and that may not be a reflection of
- 40:12Speaker 4: your overall character and how you you know, I don't,
- 40:14Speaker 4: I don't. I don't. I don't judge him on his
- 40:16Speaker 4: character or or who he is as as as a
- 40:18Speaker 4: man or as a coach. I'm not judging that. I'm
- 40:21Speaker 4: I'm judging that moment and in that moment, what I'm
- 40:25Speaker 4: doing is I'm also, now, how do I tell you,
- 40:28Speaker 4: as my player, don't say anything because it's my responsibility
- 40:33Speaker 4: to deal with that. You told us that what you
- 40:35Speaker 4: would say. I remember every game, or at least every
- 40:39Speaker 4: I would say every game, you said, let me deal
- 40:41Speaker 4: with the referees. That's what you would say. That's my job.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Your job is to go out there and play. Listen
- 40:46Speaker 4: to the coach of woo woo. Let me deal with
- 40:49Speaker 4: the referees. That's your job as the coach. And and
- 40:52Speaker 4: the way and and and my way of handling it
- 40:55Speaker 4: was simply, I'm gonna ask the question and I wasn't
- 40:59Speaker 4: got a call.
- 40:59Speaker 2: And that's write ninety percent of the time, we ain't.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Talking about that, So we're talking about them little five
- 41:06Speaker 4: to ten percent of the time. That's where you might
- 41:08Speaker 4: have to just go out and kick them. You know what, LISTA,
- 41:11Speaker 4: that ten percent cost them a game, and that's fine.
- 41:14Speaker 2: I don't.
- 41:14Speaker 4: You won the locker room. You won the locker room,
- 41:17Speaker 4: and you won your players. You won your players respect.
- 41:20Speaker 4: So you're gonna go in. You're gonna go in and
- 41:22Speaker 4: tell the guys that we lost this game because of
- 41:24Speaker 4: the officials.
- 41:26Speaker 2: No, no, I.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Don't think you sayd what do you say?
- 41:29Speaker 6: We're true?
- 41:30Speaker 4: What's that? Go ahead? List? I'm sorry?
- 41:33Speaker 6: Oh no, no, No, I'm just saying that's never true.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I agree with that.
- 41:39Speaker 6: To the cause of referee. Then you that that that
- 41:44Speaker 6: cannot be the reason why you lost the game. There's
- 41:47Speaker 6: so many other players that you had opportunities to not
- 41:51Speaker 6: come down to a referees call. So I'll never buy.
- 41:56Speaker 4: That because if you leave it to the official, the
- 41:59Speaker 4: chances of you it's greater. We're not talking again. We're
- 42:03Speaker 4: not talking about one or two calls. We're talking about
- 42:05Speaker 4: a series of calls that was wretchet. We're talking about
- 42:08Speaker 4: a series of We're talking about a game which they
- 42:12Speaker 4: looked like they had blinders on.
- 42:14Speaker 2: So I don't know if.
- 42:14Speaker 4: I don't think all those calls were bad some I'm
- 42:18Speaker 4: say some of them. But what I'm saying in that situation,
- 42:21Speaker 4: you go in the locker room, you say, look, guys,
- 42:23Speaker 4: it was up against us today. If things weren't right,
- 42:26Speaker 4: we probably could have did X y Z better. Once
- 42:29Speaker 4: we break down the film, we'll see exactly what we
- 42:31Speaker 4: could have did better. But you know, it was a
- 42:34Speaker 4: situation in which I didn't feel like we were being
- 42:37Speaker 4: treated fairly. My guys, You guys weren't being treated fairly,
- 42:40Speaker 4: and I had to come in there and make it known. Now,
- 42:43Speaker 4: now did I overreact? Did da da da da da?
- 42:46Speaker 4: Then you can go down that road. But if I
- 42:48Speaker 4: don't feel like you're being treated fairly, I'm coming to
- 42:51Speaker 4: ride with you no matter what. In those small and
- 42:55Speaker 4: we don't see these situations every day. Now we're seeing
- 42:59Speaker 4: this might be won two games a year that possibly yeah,
- 43:03Speaker 4: so you gotta go crazy, you gotta go off.
- 43:07Speaker 6: It's not a current exact currents that games are decided
- 43:11Speaker 6: by referee call.
- 43:14Speaker 4: And I will and and and like I said, I'm
- 43:16Speaker 4: I'm watching the game now. Were some of those touchy
- 43:21Speaker 4: touchy Yes, some of them I would I would like, well, yeah,
- 43:25Speaker 4: that that actually is a foul. But once you got
- 43:27Speaker 4: into it, it got so close and the and the
- 43:30Speaker 4: call started going one way it. I can understand them
- 43:36Speaker 4: it being ugly for them, but once they got once
- 43:39Speaker 4: they got the tech, it was like, oh, y'all done now,
- 43:42Speaker 4: but now that's that you got two shots. Now you
- 43:45Speaker 4: got the ball. I almost compare to like John Thompson
- 43:48Speaker 4: when he had like Alonzo morning and and Patrick Ewing.
- 43:51Speaker 4: He would tell them, look that first shot to come
- 43:54Speaker 4: in the lane, to go up. I don't care if
- 43:56Speaker 4: it's got in or not. You knocked that thing into
- 43:58Speaker 4: the stands. We'll take the will take the penalty, will
- 44:01Speaker 4: take whatever. And I'm saying as a coach sometimes I
- 44:04Speaker 4: ain't saying all the time. I'm saying one or two
- 44:06Speaker 4: times a year, every other year, every couple of years,
- 44:09Speaker 4: you gotta take that and you gotta ride for your boys. Okay,
- 44:12Speaker 4: Now with saying that, yeah, I'm guilty. And again this
- 44:17Speaker 4: is this is prior to all the CTE stuff. One
- 44:21Speaker 4: of the things that I would say when I was
- 44:22Speaker 4: coaching at State to the defensive guys, especially the guys
- 44:26Speaker 4: in the secondary, A dude, come across the middle, but
- 44:29Speaker 4: we'll take fifteen. Well, West, what I'm saying, we'll take
- 44:33Speaker 4: that first fifteen. And that's what I'm saying that I
- 44:35Speaker 4: ain't got nothing to say. And as a coach, you
- 44:37Speaker 4: might have to take that fifteen from time to time.
- 44:40Speaker 4: And I just think this time, particularly being early in
- 44:44Speaker 4: the season, you just coming off a championship. This was
- 44:47Speaker 4: my They they don't know what they done did to
- 44:49Speaker 4: that program. I guarantee you they're gonna be in the tournament.
- 44:52Speaker 4: And I would almost bet money I'm not even a gambler.
- 44:56Speaker 4: But I would almost puck like a prop bet that
- 44:58Speaker 4: they're gonna be in that championship again. Base Stop what
- 45:00Speaker 4: happened there? They don't fueled that team, to fuel that
- 45:03Speaker 4: coach for the whole season. Na, I'm telling you, I'm
- 45:07Speaker 4: telling you, well, well I don't know how to start
- 45:10Speaker 4: telling my best we start.
- 45:14Speaker 6: Let need you the flip side of the guys, the
- 45:16Speaker 6: flip side. So you you you're as a coach, you're
- 45:19Speaker 6: not agreeing with what the referees are calling. Right, you're
- 45:22Speaker 6: out there, you're doing the things or you're you know,
- 45:26Speaker 6: doing whatever it is. And so then the referees get
- 45:30Speaker 6: kind of because we're all human, they're human, we're all
- 45:34Speaker 6: out there a sporting event. We're all humans. So then
- 45:37Speaker 6: they got in their mind, well this coach is mass
- 45:40Speaker 6: Oh sorry, probably shouldn't say the're on the air, but anyway,
- 45:44Speaker 6: So don't you think that that kind of like puts
- 45:49Speaker 6: it in the favor of the they're gonna call call
- 45:53Speaker 6: tiki tack calls because they think that you are being
- 45:58Speaker 6: what I said.
- 45:59Speaker 4: I would agree, I mean, I agree with you on that,
- 46:02Speaker 4: I agree with it, but again we're not I don't
- 46:03Speaker 4: think we're talking about just like the average game. I
- 46:05Speaker 4: think we're talking about those just unique circumstances like what
- 46:09Speaker 4: happened the other night against All. I mean it was.
- 46:15Speaker 2: It was perfectly set up and structured for this mess.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it was.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I mean everything possible was in line.
- 46:23Speaker 4: For this and it's gonna be good. I think this
- 46:24Speaker 4: is gonna be This is gonna be great for Yukon.
- 46:27Speaker 4: All Right, we don't have much time, but I want to.
- 46:29Speaker 4: I really want to jump into Dion Sanders and his
- 46:34Speaker 4: conversation on Travis Hunter.
- 46:41Speaker 2: He's upset because he didn't get he didn't get he didn't.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Get one of the awards. We didn't getting considered for them.
- 46:46Speaker 4: He didn't get considered for award, which goes to the
- 46:51Speaker 4: best best defens wasn't even wasn't even in the top three. Okaye, Okay,
- 47:01Speaker 4: Why do you think that? Why do I think it happened? Yeah,
- 47:05Speaker 4: because it's deon. My my personal reason. I think it's
- 47:08Speaker 4: de on. I think if he would have been in
- 47:13Speaker 4: the three and the three, if he was in the
- 47:16Speaker 4: three in the selection, he wasn't even in the three,
- 47:21Speaker 4: and this is the best player in the country. That
- 47:26Speaker 4: happens to be a defensive back. It just happens to
- 47:28Speaker 4: be a defensive back. How can he not be in
- 47:32Speaker 4: the three?
- 47:33Speaker 6: So why is he not?
- 47:35Speaker 2: I mean, I think again, I.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Think there's I think there's the reality of how much
- 47:41Speaker 4: can we give the prime? How much can we really
- 47:45Speaker 4: So you think this has to do with Dion, I
- 47:47Speaker 4: think it's see and again, and I definitely think he
- 47:50Speaker 4: should have been considered, if not won award. But I
- 47:53Speaker 4: would also say, I think what maybe whoever's on that
- 47:56Speaker 4: committee or whoever's choosing those players, I think they may
- 47:59Speaker 4: be looking at For example, I think they I think
- 48:03Speaker 4: sometimes number one, I think they're looking at, well, he's
- 48:05Speaker 4: probably gonna get the Heisman anyway, or he's gonna get
- 48:07Speaker 4: considered for that, So we don't so we can't. So
- 48:10Speaker 4: you're right, I'm not saying that. I'm just trying to
- 48:12Speaker 4: jump into the mind so we can kind of shift
- 48:14Speaker 4: this award. We can look at other players and three
- 48:18Speaker 4: and two. What I also think and I would be
- 48:20Speaker 4: interested who's on this committee because I think one of
- 48:23Speaker 4: the knocks they tried to make about Travis Hunter is
- 48:25Speaker 4: that he doesn't have enough tackles. And what they don't
- 48:28Speaker 4: realize is that if you a cornerback specifically or a safety,
- 48:32Speaker 4: and you got a whole bunch of tackles, your defense
- 48:34Speaker 4: got a whole bunch of problems. Whole bunch of problems.
- 48:36Speaker 4: And number one, if you don't have a bunch of interceptions,
- 48:39Speaker 4: that might actually be a good thing because that means
- 48:42Speaker 4: people ain't throwing to you. So I think how they're
- 48:45Speaker 4: maybe assessing the defensive back position. And if you're only
- 48:48Speaker 4: looking at stats, then it may go the other way.
- 48:51Speaker 4: But you have to actually look at the game. But specifically,
- 48:55Speaker 4: when you talk about a defensive back, you have to
- 48:58Speaker 4: look at the game. You cannot look at that stat shee.
- 49:00Speaker 4: That doesn't really tell you the story, right, Yeah, miss Lisa.
- 49:05Speaker 6: Oh, I'm really torn on this. I feel like he
- 49:10Speaker 6: should have been nominated for this award, But I also
- 49:15Speaker 6: feel like, you know, I love Prime. I think he's great,
- 49:19Speaker 6: but I think sometimes his presence intimidates people and and
- 49:25Speaker 6: maybe they they want to back away from him and
- 49:29Speaker 6: maybe look at other players because of the fact that
- 49:32Speaker 6: he's playing for Prime. I don't know, but I really
- 49:37Speaker 6: feel like he should have been nominated. I think it's sad.
- 49:42Speaker 6: I don't know what the reasoning could be. But you know,
- 49:47Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 49:48Speaker 4: I think they're looking at stats and and I think
- 49:51Speaker 4: that you can. You cannot look at a defensive back
- 49:53Speaker 4: and just you cannot look at the stat sheet.
- 49:55Speaker 2: No you you you can't.
- 49:56Speaker 4: You legitimately have to really watch the game. Watch what
- 49:59Speaker 4: I'm saying. I think every other position and I would
- 50:02Speaker 4: say this defensive back in offensive linemen, yes, you can't
- 50:07Speaker 4: necessarily just look at the stat You have to watch
- 50:09Speaker 4: the game. Everybody else you can kind of assess thats
- 50:12Speaker 4: and kind of you maybe that may be your starting point,
- 50:14Speaker 4: but those two positions, you got to watch the game.
- 50:16Speaker 4: And again speaking to your perfect example of you know,
- 50:20Speaker 4: getting interceptions one season and then not getting them the
- 50:24Speaker 4: next season, because if you got x number of if
- 50:28Speaker 4: you're playing corner and you get x number of interceptions
- 50:31Speaker 4: one season, and we and we we've tested you, and
- 50:34Speaker 4: we realized, Okay, no, we don't want to go there.
- 50:36Speaker 4: They're gonna go the other way. They're gonna go all
- 50:38Speaker 4: the way and you ain't gonna get a chance to
- 50:41Speaker 4: get no intercept break up breakups.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Your stats are gonna be horrible. Yeah, the only thing you.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Got it starts and the thing is and and the
- 50:49Speaker 4: thing is is a defensive back. I would almost say
- 50:52Speaker 4: the least that you got, almost it's almost the better,
- 50:56Speaker 4: because that just means that ain't nobody coming at your way.
- 50:58Speaker 4: They're they're really a void and you and you got
- 51:00Speaker 4: a whole side or a whole quarter of the field
- 51:02Speaker 4: that you're just completely shutting down. You look at guys
- 51:05Speaker 4: like Ronnie Lott, those kind of safeties, they're not getting
- 51:09Speaker 4: that for the most part, they don't get a lot
- 51:11Speaker 4: of interceptions because they're not. Nobody's really throwing a post
- 51:14Speaker 4: route when you know, when you know that dude is
- 51:17Speaker 4: right there because me is the receiver, I'm not going
- 51:19Speaker 4: in there, So don't even think about real skin. And
- 51:25Speaker 4: I think the fact that knowing you have to understand
- 51:28Speaker 4: that reality in order to to judge or the critique,
- 51:34Speaker 4: and because if you don't, you're gonna cheat, you're gonna cheap.
- 51:36Speaker 4: That maybe based off that so maybe based off that
- 51:40Speaker 4: far as that committee or that select whoever does that
- 51:42Speaker 4: selection of the Thorpe Award, maybe they're saying, well, look,
- 51:46Speaker 4: these guys, they're being tested, they're going to these guys,
- 51:49Speaker 4: and these guys are performing when they got the action
- 51:51Speaker 4: their way. So based off that these these guys are
- 51:55Speaker 4: the best seeing.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Versus seeing action, we're not seeing action.
- 51:58Speaker 4: So based off these guys are actually in the midst
- 52:01Speaker 4: of the action, then there may be more deserving for
- 52:04Speaker 4: this specific award. Although we're saying Travis Hunter is probably
- 52:08Speaker 4: the best player overall. You see what I'm saying, I do,
- 52:11Speaker 4: And that's really great a knowledge, it really is.
- 52:14Speaker 6: It doesn't matter because he's already said, already saying.
- 52:21Speaker 4: He's gonna get one right.
- 52:26Speaker 6: From when he wanted. So he's gonna get one.
- 52:29Speaker 4: I bet he gives it to it. But but I
- 52:31Speaker 4: don't think he. I don't know if he can appreciate it,
- 52:33Speaker 4: but I don't know if he deserves it. Like I said,
- 52:35Speaker 4: if you're looking at the best I'm just saying following
- 52:37Speaker 4: me because I actually may be reconsidered if you're looking
- 52:40Speaker 4: at the best defensive back. Again, I'm saying you can't
- 52:43Speaker 4: look at statue. You have to look holistically. But if
- 52:46Speaker 4: I'm saying, like, look, these are the three guys that
- 52:49Speaker 4: are actually seeing the most action. They're seeing everything come
- 52:52Speaker 4: their way, running backs, passes, all that, and they've actually
- 52:55Speaker 4: performed well in the midst of the action, then they
- 52:58Speaker 4: may be the better choice for that specif civic award,
- 53:01Speaker 4: although they although you know, Hunter probably is more right
- 53:04Speaker 4: for a Heisman type of ward. But I think to
- 53:07Speaker 4: not get considered is the problem. I'm not saying he
- 53:10Speaker 4: probably should have won it, but I'm saying he's number three.
- 53:13Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not sure he should have won it,
- 53:19Speaker 4: but I'll say, you gotta get considered. But I but
- 53:21Speaker 4: if I'm looking at it, and I'm saying, like, look,
- 53:23Speaker 4: these guys saw the action and they performed in the action,
- 53:26Speaker 4: where he's not necessarily seeing the same level action just
- 53:29Speaker 4: because of who he is and his his acumen right now,
- 53:32Speaker 4: so I'm saying I would probably give it to one
- 53:35Speaker 4: of the others guys, but you gotta you gotta consider him.
- 53:37Speaker 4: That's that's kind of just crazy to not considering.
- 53:41Speaker 6: But like I said before, I think I think it's
- 53:44Speaker 6: it is definitely a sign or a look at you know, proms.
- 53:51Speaker 6: I mean that they're they're tired of him. I think
- 53:53Speaker 6: the media is tired of him.
- 53:55Speaker 2: I don't know if this is a prime thing, but
- 53:58Speaker 2: but I don't know.
- 53:59Speaker 4: One of the interesting question hollis that you ask is
- 54:02Speaker 4: like you don't know who's on the committee. That's what
- 54:04Speaker 4: That's what bothers me is these committees make these decisions
- 54:08Speaker 4: and nobody knows who who's even making it, or the
- 54:11Speaker 4: criteria or what the criteria is, Like, what are you
- 54:14Speaker 4: judging it on? What made you decide that he wasn't
- 54:17Speaker 4: even in the top three? Because I can understand there.
- 54:21Speaker 4: I think I can sort of maybe without knowing him,
- 54:24Speaker 4: and I think I can sort of climb into what
- 54:26Speaker 4: they're thinking about it, you know what I'm saying. Again,
- 54:28Speaker 4: But to your point, are they watching the games? Because
- 54:32Speaker 4: if you're not watching the games and you're looking at
- 54:35Speaker 4: a stat line, that's going to lead you down a
- 54:37Speaker 4: different road.
- 54:38Speaker 2: Absolutely you know what I mean? Absolutely so.
- 54:41Speaker 4: And it's one of those things where you have so
- 54:43Speaker 4: many you know, obviously defensive backs to consider because what
- 54:46Speaker 4: I would really like him to do, like I think
- 54:49Speaker 4: it should be maybe a bigger panel, and they nail
- 54:52Speaker 4: it down to let's say ten guys, right, and then
- 54:55Speaker 4: those ten and then those ten guys, then who's ever
- 54:57Speaker 4: the selection committee? They have to watch every single game
- 55:02Speaker 4: once he gets narrowed down, because you can't watch every
- 55:03Speaker 4: one hundred and subplus game, right, but once he gets
- 55:06Speaker 4: narrowed down, Okay, we can sit in these five or
- 55:08Speaker 4: ten guys. Then you got to go back and watch
- 55:10Speaker 4: every single one of those games and you have to
- 55:12Speaker 4: do an analysis game by game, and then you come
- 55:15Speaker 4: up with it. They could have done that with the
- 55:16Speaker 4: three games. They could have done three games.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Not three three tumping three guys.
- 55:20Speaker 4: No, when when they got down to three guys, they
- 55:22Speaker 4: could look at those games.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Okay, even that, whatever you get.
- 55:26Speaker 4: Once you get down to the last group. But I'm saying,
- 55:29Speaker 4: like I'm saying, like, get a bigger group. Like what
- 55:31Speaker 4: I'm saying is get about ten groups. That's gonna narrow
- 55:34Speaker 4: you down to three, your three finalists, and then from
- 55:37Speaker 4: the finalists you go from there. You see, you sit
- 55:40Speaker 4: nail it all the way down because I because again.
- 55:42Speaker 6: Easy, it's so easy for us to look from the
- 55:45Speaker 6: outside end and say this, this should happen, that should happen.
- 55:49Speaker 6: You know what I mean. I don't I don't know
- 55:50Speaker 6: what the committee looks like that. I think they're doing
- 55:53Speaker 6: the best they can.
- 55:54Speaker 4: But if you getting paid to do it, you gotta
- 55:56Speaker 4: you can't be paid.
- 55:57Speaker 2: You can't do that. You can't beat that far off.
- 56:00Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't be that far. You cannot be you
- 56:01Speaker 4: cannot have him. I mean, a potential Player of the Year,
- 56:04Speaker 4: come on, is not even in the position that he's playing.
- 56:08Speaker 4: He's not even nominated. That's crazy. I mean that that's yeah,
- 56:12Speaker 4: that's I mean, how does that work?
- 56:14Speaker 6: I just love you?
