- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Because no matter how different our past may look, we are all in this together.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Hello, welcome to Homeschooling a Life Unfiltered with Court and Jess.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: We are back after a long summer break.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Um this is our like we've had some episodes coming, some that we've recorded, but this is our first episode live coming back with you for this fall.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: And today we're just gonna talk about how it's going, how our school year went, how our end of our summer wrapped up, the good, the bad, and the ugly and comical, because I had some comical start to my year.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Like it was a little ridiculous over here.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: I still feel like we're getting going.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, how's how's it going, Jess?
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Like it's been a year since we chatted.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: For sure, yeah, on the podcast, although we chat every day otherwise.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but yes, no, our I have been super happy with how our school year has gone.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I gave a talk for Venture Upward.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Um gosh, was it in June?
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know, but I think that was our podcast, our first podcast.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Yes, it was.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: And it's always good, right?
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know when you're preparing to to share a message or to put together a talk like that, it always helps to kind of refocus you as well and re-sharpen you.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and so uh I just was re-motivated to really stick to my guns to have a really strong start to my school year.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: And that really all boiled down to like the, you know, do it, do it imperfectly today and then do it again tomorrow.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and so we've been incredibly consistent with school at the start of the school year.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I've been really happy with the results.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: It has not been perfect.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: There have been days where, you know, I didn't have the book we were gonna read picked out ahead of time for our like our morning basket time.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: We do just like one fun.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: My daughter is 11 in sixth grade, but she still enjoys being read too.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: And I've shared on this podcast before, I do not love reading out loud with my kids like novels, but I really love reading out loud short books that you can finish in 15, 20 minutes.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: And so that um, and I think it stems from when I was young, I went to uh um um just a normal elementary school and Lakeview Elementary in Albert Lee, Minnesota, and we had such a great librarian, and we would get to go down for story time all the way, like the entire time, like through fifth grade, and she would just read us some great books.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: And so uh there have been days where I roll into morning basket time and I haven't picked up my book, right?
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Or um I pick one and it's a dud, or you know, just different things like that.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: So it hasn't been perfect.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Um I'm sorry, I'm sick too.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Our math curriculum order is uh delayed, is our math curriculum is backstocked.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: So we've been piecemealing it until we get her um math curriculum.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: And so it's not been perfect, but we've done it imperfectly every single day.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: We've seen such good results.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Um, we are back on our World Watch kick um that Courtney introduced me to.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: We love it so much.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: It's such a great start to the day.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: We do it over breakfast.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Um I did, I think one thing that was key for me this year is I love to plan and think big.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: And Courtney's starting to laugh because she knows it about me.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: The bigger the better.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: And so I always set myself up for failure at the beginning of the year by saying, like, oh, we're gonna do all these great new curriculums.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: And we've talked about this before, like the music appreciation, classical music, all these things.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: And so I started smaller with our morning basket time specifically, and then I'm gonna add to it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: And we're now three weeks into school, two or three weeks, I can't remember.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: And today I just added in something because we're just like we're getting through it.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: We're done by noon every day.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Um, our morning basket time has been super consistent, so I felt like I could add something.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: So um today we added just and my daughter just loved it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Today we added to our morning basket time.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Um it's called uh something, it's like a survival, it's like a how to survival guide.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: It's like how to survive anything.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: So, like right now we're going through animal attacks, like how to survive.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: It is so weird and morbid, but my kid loves things like that.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: And so today we just talked about um the start of the chapter about animal attacks and how you and it goes through like alligators and grizzly bears and all these things and how you can survive something like that.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and she's laughing because she knows too.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I have some real phones of like bears, alligators, and sharks, right?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Those are my three.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um they're a little rational.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Um, so anyways, it was fun to be in a place at the beginning of this year where we are starting out strong, we're super consistent, and I didn't overplan us so much so that we've gotten to add something in.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: So, like that feels great, so much better than getting to this, you know, three weeks in and feeling like we just never have enough time, there's too much to do.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: So I'm crabby and she's crabby, and then nobody's having fun.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Um, so this feels really good where we're at.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: And then my older kids who because we have, and I think Courtney, you did this a little bit differently, but um, I do morning time just with my non-high school kids.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: And what do you do?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, once my kids get to high school, um, they do like Rory freshman year, they typically stay freshman and software-ish, but once they do the EBIT, like that, um, the school with the whatever that they do, um, they um they don't because they're gone.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And I I tried when my very first like Sydney started a million years ago, um, trying to like move moving time so then it was like after she got home, but it was just like I couldn't do it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Like by then I was just done, or there was other things happening, and it just didn't, it didn't work.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, so I just do it, which that was hard to like embrace that that it's okay to do it without all the kids.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: It's sad for sure.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: And then it's always hard too because we do scripture study during morning basket, so then it's like okay, where am I then where do I get that family scripture time in with the other kids?
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: And the reality is you might just not every single day.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: We don't, and that's so sad.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but they have their individual scripture study and all that.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Um but um we do do world watch though with anybody who's home over breakfast.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: So that has been kind of fun.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Um, we actually today we missed it on Friday.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Um, well, we don't watch World Watch normally on Fridays, we just do it Monday through Thursday because we have our co-op.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but because it was 9-11 and I realized that I don't know that I've done the best job of really sharing like the the really like the depth of 9-11.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, certainly they know about it, all the things, but um, and so we just spent a little bit more time on it this year, especially with the anniversary and uh the 25 years, and then um we watched World Watch from Friday so they could see the 9-11 tribute.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: And it was really they did a really nice job.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Um wait, I have a tip for you.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: It was a very good one, I 100% agree.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Um, for co-op because we also have co-op on Fridays.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: And so sometimes we still eat breakfast, right?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: So we still normally try to do like just that piece of it during breakfast.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Um but on the days that we don't, we'll do it in the car.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Like they'll just hold up my phone and kind of watch it, but then we play it through the speaker so I can still hear it.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: No, we are back in we're back in our town now.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: So but it's still a 20-minute drive.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: So it's it's still a 20 minute drive.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: So 10-minute world walk, you can do it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: That's a really good idea.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and I apologize, I have to have cough drop in when we're doing this, so I apologize to everybody, but um, you don't want to hear me hacking.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Wait, really fast, also really fast.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I just went and looked, and it doesn't look like actual um like your one your talk hasn't actually been posted yet.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: So we'll make sure we get that posted.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Um, so, anyways, um oh, the talk that I was referencing at the beginning of this.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, just to let everybody know that's perfect.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and so uh I highly encourage you to watch that episode um to before you if you if you're getting to this episode and you haven't seen it yet, go back and watch it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's really it's really a good one, I think.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Um but the older kids, um, it's gone really well.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: I've been super impressed with how diligent they've been in their studies without needing mom like kind of just right over them, you know, and hovering.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: And did you do it?
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: Did you do it?
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: And so I think that really just again goes back to that early training of being really consistent, teaching the value of the work that they're doing, giving them the study skills they need and things like that, because it pays off once they're teens and you don't have to argue every minute for them to get their work done.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, super good.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: We are doing a few new curriculums this year.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Um we're doing, we've done Singapore math in the before, um, but not with every kid.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: So we're continuing that this year.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and then we're piecemealing together a science, um, which is different for me than I've done before, but it's gotten really, really good.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Um, we're doing anatomy right now.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: And then we're also doing 180 days to just get like the base, like the general science concepts, so that I can be super super specific and focused, knowing that just a little bit of time each day doing those 180-day workbooks covers all like the big general topics in science.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I like those workbooks.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: They've been I've actually been really impressed.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: I wish they weren't black and white.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Because like they're Hannah's doing one on sales right now, and oh, it would be nice to just be so nice to have color, but it's it's been totally fine.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Um, I've been really happy with like the content of it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's pretty good.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Um, and then we are doing fix it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: This is Hannah's first year of doing fix it grammar.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: So we're doing fix it grammar, she's in sixth grade, along with her IEW stuff, and that's gotten really good.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Everything else I think we've talked about on this podcast before.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's been really good.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: I for as part of our anatomy unit, we're doing this really great um in-depth book on dermatology, but it's written for kids.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Like as she's, you know, before she kind of gets into that stage with like acne and all of those things that teenagers, it's been super helpful.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: I've even learned some things as well.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: So um, that's been really fun.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: We aren't all the way through the book yet.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Um, it'll take a couple more weeks, but it's been really good to bring in science that's gonna be really relevant to her, like really soon.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's gone great.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: How about your your year so far?
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Well, I started out with, and I think I put this on the like our our Instagram.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: I ended up the day we started school, we ended up not having internet for two days at our house, right?
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: So it was it was like a comedy of errors, it was kind of ridiculous of just like we had these gung-ho plans, and I kind of like ease into school typically, like I'll start a little bit of this and we'll start a little bit of this, and um, and this August, I mean everybody here, like in Arizona, right, started school the last week of July, beginning of August.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Like that's when our public school started.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: And I was just not ready.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm I was mentally not ready at that point.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: So I was like, nope, we don't have to, like, we can start a little bit later.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And so we kind of like slow rolled it out a couple weeks later.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Um, but that was when the internet went, and I was like, oh my gosh, this is just I give up.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Like it was so silly.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: It was just and some, I mean, obviously, we don't need internet for everything, but even like the stuff that we don't have needed internet for, like, there's still components of it that, like, okay, here's an online pizza, go watch this video that like it was just dumb.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And so we kind of just did what we could for a few days, and we started like in the middle of the week, like on a like a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday kind of thing.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: And by Friday, I was like, I give up, like we're just done.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Like, let's just we're gonna try again next week.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Like, we're just gonna try again next week.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but then after that, it's going well.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Um, I agree that I love to plan, but I am such an over planner.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Like, I um I I think every homeschool mom sets them themselves up for failure at the beginning because we're just like, oh, this looks good, and this looks good, and this looks good, and yep.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And so I set family school up with all these things that we're gonna do, and we've done history.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Like we've really been focused, like we do our beautiful, we do our scripture study, and then we've done our history, we've done some read alouds.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Um, I really am enjoying the history.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: We're doing beautiful feet, but we're doing um like modern American history.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: So it starts with the Civil War, which we really have not done a ton of like in-depth stuff.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: We're reading across five Aprils, which I've actually never read.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: It's really good.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Um, it's about a family like that lives in like Illinois or Indiana or something out, one of the northern states, but like they have all this family from Kentucky because like that's where they're from, which but Kentucky is like the Confederate, like that's the South.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: And so it's just super interesting.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: And like one of the brothers went back to Kentucky with the family to fight with the South, and other three of the brothers are fighting at the North, and it's just really real life about like you know, like brothers fighting brothers.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: That was what that war was about.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: But we've not really done a bunch with it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, tell me the name of the book again.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Across five Aprils, five Aprils, yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: A-P-R-I-L-S.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, April.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: Like the month, okay.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Like, I think it's because it's a was it must be like across five years, across five Aprils, like five years time.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I have no idea that just came to me just now, but that would make sense.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: No, that's really good.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna put it on our list.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I am reading it out loud to the kids, and I think it would be a really hard book for them to actually read to themselves because there's a whole bunch of like like how they spoke was not like English.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean it was English, but it's not like modern day, yeah, but it's like not phonetically because they they talked in like like with an accent and slang and like like of the you know what I mean?
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Like Kentucky is like Kentuck, but it's spelled super wonky, but like that's what they're saying.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: So it's just I think it would be a hard book for me to like hand to Macy to read because she'd be like, I need to put it on my husband's list then, yeah, or maybe a read aloud.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: I was thinking it might be it might be a good read aloud.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Um, but anyways, I it's part of our thing, and so we're working on our timeline and like so that is going really, really well.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: But now we're talking, what is it?
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: It's like the third week of September.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: So we've probably been doing school six weeks, do you think?
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you started before we did.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so maybe six weeks of school, but like we're only through lesson four of math or uh history, which isn't terrible because I actually traveled two of those weeks.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: So there's two weeks that we don't do family school and I travel.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So actually that's making me feel a little better now that I think about it like that.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, we're so behind.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: But I haven't added in, like, I had all these like writing things and these math things.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Like, I haven't, you know, you pick your poison, but like, where's the focus?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: And we're kind of into the history thing right now.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's neat and interesting, and everybody's into it.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna do that for a little while.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: You guys are into history.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: I'm wearing off on you.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, I've always loved history.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I just um it's science that's not my jam.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: We did start our science co-op and we just started science co-op last week uh because it makes me do science.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Like I have to do it with other people.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Um, this year we're doing um uh what are we doing?
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: We're doing ecology and botany.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: Like we're doing like kind of you know, nature things.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: But we actually have somebody in our our church who like that's his like profession is all about plants and like agriculture and like where things grow and how that environment works together.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And so he's gonna do some field trips with us, like in Arizona, local Arizona, um, about some different areas.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: So that will be kind of fun.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, science is just better with people.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: It just is.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: It's just one you're muted.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: You're muted.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry, yes, 100%.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: It is definitely better with people.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but language arts is going good and math is going good, and like that's been able to keep going when I'm gone.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: And so I feel like we have a really good groove.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Um, like the books that are going and the like it was a little bit rocky just getting started with just the internet and just all the expectations.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And then I threw in a couple weeks of travel in there, and then we had people get sick, and it just, you know, it's just like it's one thing, it's not another.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Like it's just is that is real, it is real, real life are over here in the lost house.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think being flexible, like you said, you know, you just decided, okay, we're gonna scrap this week and we're just gonna not start till next week is really important.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And um, this year for us, my older kids that are in high school, a who are high school age, um, or real act, I always say high school, but it's it's more middle school-ish when they start challenged for CC.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Um, they start a few weeks earlier than my younger foundation's kids.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: And this year, I was getting like a like the first week I got a lot of like the I'm bored, you know, because the older all doing school.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: And so we moved school up by like two weeks.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, because why not?
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: You know, it's either have her sit here saying, I'm bored, I'm bored all day, or let's just okay, then let's just start school.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: I didn't I didn't necessarily tell her that that I had moved up because of that, but um, it worked out really well and things are going really well.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Um the other thing that I added that was gonna share really quick is have you ever heard of this book or seen this book?
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: No, super fun.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: I think you would really like it.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Um it is, and you have to kind of look at it and make sure that the kids would get them.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Um, but you have like a case and you read it to the uh person, and then there's clues, and they have to figure it, they have to figure it out.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Um it's super fun.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Actually, kind of want to do one to you right now.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: I think it's oh I was like, I need an example.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: You know me, I'm a visual person.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Um, so we did a really actually I have the perfect one that we did.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Um, let's see.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Something easy.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: It's been a long day.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I'll give me something easy.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Well, it's along the lines of the thing that you were just talking about, so I think you'll get it.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is a good one.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Okay, this one I haven't done yet.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Some they're not all educational like this, but a lot of them are.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: In the dark of night, a daring woman performed feats that few in their right mind would have considered.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Over many years, she put herself and others in harm's way with her hair-raising adventures, but in the end, she escaped unscathed.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: After meeting her, people were never the same again, were never the same again.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Who is this person and what was she famous for?
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Amelia Earhart?
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: No.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Um, people think this woman was a great American heroine.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: What she eventually did for other people, she first did for her family.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Uh in her eyes, all people were equal.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Like Harriet Tutman, maybe Harriet Tubman.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Yep, yep.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: But it's really fun.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Like the one we did this morning was like this couple gets into this car and they go 120 miles an hour, and the husband pushes his feet into the floorboard, into the floorboards, and they flip upside down, and then they come to a screeching halt and they walk away unharmed.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And it was on a roller coaster.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: They were on a roller coaster.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, super fun.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Some of them are about like literature-based, some are movie-based, like they're just really fun.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Some are um, like one was describing um somebody who is a basically a serial killer, and they uh are never arrested for their crimes.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Well, they were the bug guy, like the exterminator.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's fair.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, selling bugs.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: People that are listening and not watching, can you tell us the name of the book with the author?
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, such a good point.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: It's called um, and I I think I got it, I might have gotten it on a thrift store, so I don't even know if it's right, but um 30-second mysteries case files.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Um and it's by Spinner Books.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, so mysteries case files.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, so the one that I was looking for originally was something about brother fighting brother, and um it was the civil war.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: I got a 30 second mysteries game book.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Let me see if I just yeah, case files.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: 30 second mysteries case files.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I'm looking to see if I can find the IAMs.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: I'm just curious.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: There's 280 mysteries total, so it's super fun.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Um, we also have an analogies book, which is really good prep work for like the ACTs, SATs.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: And we start that really young, um, like fourth grade.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: And so she has, and that's really kids really like analogies too.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: And so we have an analogies book.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: So she gets to pick every day.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Does she want to do something from the analogies book or does she want to do um a 30-second mystery?
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: I loved analogies.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: It looks like it's you can buy it used for$2.39.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Well, there you go.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: The other thing, just like a side note for any of our listeners who have um either kids away at college or who are on missions, this is super fun to do on their calls home.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Like sometimes, right, you get a kiddo that calls home from their mission or from college and they just want to talk, but they're you know, you they might not have anything to do or they want to feel and they want to feel involved, right?
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: So, like our daughters the other day did a um a board game via Zoom with our daughter in college.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: But then when our missionary called and he just wanted to talk, um, we did the 30-second mysteries as a family, and it was so fun.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a good idea.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fun.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Used for all kinds of things, but anyways, yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Well, it sounds like we both are off to a great start, so that's super fun.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm glad that it's going well for both of us, and it won't be perfect.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: And so if your your is off to a rough start, do not feel bad.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Courtney and I have both been in those really rough start years.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Maybe there's a few pieces of advice that you could pull out uh or listen to my talk that I gave, um, and maybe that'll help get you back on the right track.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just every day is a new day, and that's okay.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: And like you just start over fresh or a week.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Like sometimes you just need to be like, oh, that's okay.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: This week is just we're gonna try again next week.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: We'll do it better.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I that's kind of the joys of homeschooling for me, but it took me a really long time to get to that place to be like, oh yeah, it's okay, cool.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: We'll try again again tomorrow.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: We are back, so we shall have episodes every week moving forward um for this school year.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: And if you have ideas and you have things that you want us to share, please make sure you let us know.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: We have lots of ways to get a hold of us, but um, like and comment and share with your friends.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: So we would love for the word to get out.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So thanks everybody.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Bye.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Bye.
