- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I'm team series and your daily influence and today I want to talk about something often gets overlooked in leadership business and relationships and that is credibility is built in small amounts and when people think about credibility, they often think about big things big decisions, big speeches, big accomplishments, big ways.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: But in my experience, credibility usually isn't earned in the big moments.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's earned long before the big moments ever arrived.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's built in the ordinary interactions, no one talks about, to quick response to a message.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: The promise you said you'd keep and did, how you handled a mistake, how you showed up on something was uncomfortable, how you treated someone when there was nothing to gain.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason this matters is simple.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: Trust may be the long-term result, but credibility is built in the daily input.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: Every small interaction leaves an impression.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: And over time, those impressions become reputation.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: So today I want to spend a few minutes talking about how credibility is often one or lost in the smallest moments.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: So one of the fastest ways credibility
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: Not the major strategic commitments, the level ones.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'll send that over later today, I'll call you tomorrow, I'll follow up next week, I'll be there at nine simple things, easy things, but people remember him when those things consistently happen, trust begins to build naturally.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: Not because you've asked for trust, but because you're behavior earned it, the opposite is also true.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: repeatedly missing the small commitments weakens credibility faster than most people realize.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: A leader can have brilliant ideas, but if people can't rely on the follow-through credibility starts to erode.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: Smart management teaches this constantly.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Behavior repeated becomes culture and credibility is no different.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: People watch how you handle difficult moments.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: but credibility becomes visible when pressure shows up.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: People pay attention to how leaders respond when things get messy.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: Do you stay calm?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: I know I have a struggle with that.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: And my team here, in our team here, would attest to, that's probably one of my biggest challenges.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: Do they own your mistakes?
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: I'm good at that.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: Do you become defensive?
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: not really, but if you do, do you shift blame?
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: Or do you look for justification?
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: Do you avoid the hard conversations?
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: Or do you step into it directly and respectfully?
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, those go together?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: I have no problem being direct, but sometimes because of the way I act emotionally, respect could appear to be lost.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a leader's response to a difficult moment's
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: communication because pressure reveals consistency and consistency creates credibility.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: Especially in how accountability is handled, people notice quickly whether accountability applies equally, whether the standard applies to everyone or only to certain people, fairness builds credibility, selective accountability destroys it and people rarely forget
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: People remember I made them feel and ordinary in our actions.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's maybe the most underestimated part of credibility.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: People remember tone, people remember body language, people remember timing, people remember whether they felt or feel respected, whether they felt heard, whether they felt dismissed, whether they felt safe telling you the truth.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: Often they will remember every word of a conversation, but they will absolutely remember how that interaction felt.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do you make space for someone?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do you rush them?
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: Do you listen?
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Do you interrupt?
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: Do you respond with curiosity or judgment?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: These moments feel small while they're happening, but they aren't small.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: They stack.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: And eventually they become the story people tell themselves about your leadership.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, it's the story they tell others too.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: Credibility is often formed quietly, without an announcement, and long before anyone says anything out loud.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: So look, if there's one thought I'd leave you with today, it's this.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Credibility is rarely built in the spotlight.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's built in the everyday moments in consistency and follow through in accountability, in tone,
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: in honesty and in how you respond when things are easy and especially when they're not.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: Trust is often the long-term outcome.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: Credibility is one of the daily inputs that creates it.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: And culture is what happens when those behaviors repeat across an organization over time.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're leading a team, running a business, building relationship,
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: pay attention to the small moments because what feels ordinary to you may be highly memorable just someone else and often leadership is one or loss right there.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for listening, I'm Brian Smith, the I&T series hand your daily influence and I hope you'll join us again for another episode soon.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good day.
