- 0:35Here is your host, Pastor David! Welcome to the
- 0:50Voices of Life, a ministry of the Church for
- 0:52Life. I'm Pastor David, and today we're going
- 0:55to discuss faith and technology. Not just the
- 1:00how technology works, but... into what it means
- 1:05for our souls, our communities, and our calling
- 1:09as followers of Christ. Today we have with us
- 1:13Dr. Elias Mercer. Dr. Mercer is a distinguished
- 1:16technology ethicist and AI researcher whose work
- 1:21bridges worlds of faith, innovation, and human
- 1:25purpose. With a background in computer science
- 1:28and theology, Dr. Mercer has become a leading
- 1:31voice in exploring how emerging technologies
- 1:34can serve humanity without compromising moral
- 1:37integrity or spiritual depth. He is known for
- 1:42his ability to translate complex digital concepts
- 1:45into accessible, value -based conversations,
- 1:49helping audiences understand not just what technology
- 1:54can do, but why. It should be guided by compassion,
- 1:59stewardship, and truth. Dr. Mercer, thank you
- 2:04for joining us. Thank you, Pastor David. I'm
- 2:08grateful to be here. Technology is changing faster
- 2:11than any generation before us, and the church
- 2:14has a profound opportunity to guide that change
- 2:16with wisdom and hope. I want to begin with something
- 2:22foundational from a theological perspective.
- 2:26How should believers understand human creativity
- 2:30and technological innovation? I believe innovation
- 2:39is part of the imago Dei, the image of God. In
- 2:43Genesis, God creates shapes, forms, and brings
- 2:47order out of chaos. Humans made in his image
- 2:50naturally create tools, systems, and technologies.
- 2:54Technology isn't foreign to scripture. Noah built
- 2:58an ark. David used a sling. Solomon engineered
- 3:01the temple. Paul used Roman roads and letters,
- 3:04the technology of his day, to spread the gospel.
- 3:09Innovation becomes dangerous only when it becomes
- 3:12idolatry. But when it serves God's purposes,
- 3:15it becomes an extension of his creativity through
- 3:18us. Technology isn't the enemy. It is the heart
- 3:27behind it. Dr. Mercer, Scripture talks about
- 3:33wisdom. How does biblical wisdom guide us in
- 3:39a world shaped by algorithms and automation?
- 3:47Biblical wisdom is rooted in reverence for God.
- 3:49The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 3:52AI can process information, but it cannot produce
- 3:56wisdom. Wisdom requires moral grounding, spiritual
- 3:59discernment, and relational understanding. Technology
- 4:03accelerates decisions. Wisdom slows them down.
- 4:06Technology expands our reach. Wisdom shapes our
- 4:10motives. Technology gives us options. Wisdom
- 4:13gives us direction. So wisdom becomes the filter
- 4:19through which we decide how to use the technology.
- 4:23Is that correct? Exactly. Without wisdom, technology
- 4:28becomes noise. With wisdom, it becomes ministry.
- 4:37I find one of the biggest spiritual questions
- 4:40today is identity. How does technology shape
- 4:45or distort our understanding of who we are? Technology
- 4:53amplifies whatever identity we bring to it. Social
- 4:56media can create comparison, insecurity, and
- 4:59performance -based identity. AI can tempt us
- 5:02to outsource thinking or creativity, but scripture
- 5:05reminds us. Our identity is not in our productivity,
- 5:09our online presence, or our digital footprint.
- 5:12It is in Christ. Technology becomes dangerous
- 5:15when it becomes the mirror we use to define ourselves.
- 5:19But when our identity is rooted in God, Technology
- 5:22becomes a platform for purpose rather than a
- 5:25source of pressure. That's a message our generation
- 5:28desperately needs, for sure. Let's go deeper
- 5:34into AI. What ethical responsibilities do believers
- 5:39have as AI becomes more integrated in our daily
- 5:43life? I mean, it's integrated in our search engines,
- 5:46whether we're verbalizing or typing. It's all
- 5:51around us. It even creates images and different
- 5:55types of stories for us to see. I think soon
- 5:59movies, maybe the actors and actresses will be
- 6:01out of a job. So where are we going with this?
- 6:07There are four major responsibilities. One, truth.
- 6:12Ensuring AI is used to spread truth, not misinformation.
- 6:16Two, dignity. protecting the value of every human
- 6:19being three justice preventing bias inequality
- 6:24and exploitation four compassion using ai to
- 6:28serve not harm ai magnifies human intention if
- 6:33the heart is aligned with christ ai becomes a
- 6:35tool for healing education accessibility and
- 6:39ministry so the church must be part of the ethical
- 6:47conversation. We need to have our voices heard
- 6:51when it comes down to what is the spiritual religious
- 6:56needs. Absolutely. If the church stays silent,
- 7:01others will define the moral boundaries of technology.
- 7:10So Dr. Mercer, how can technology support spiritual
- 7:14formation? without replacing the personal relational
- 7:18nature of discipleship. I mean, that's that human
- 7:23touch we always talk about and that characteristic
- 7:26and quality that humans have. Technology can
- 7:33support discipleship, but it cannot be discipleship.
- 7:36Apps can remind you to pray, but they cannot
- 7:39pray for you. AI can explain scripture, but it
- 7:42cannot obey it for you. Live streams can connect
- 7:45you to church, but they cannot replace embodied
- 7:48community. Technology is a supplement, not a
- 7:51substitute. But when used well, it can deepen
- 7:54learning, strengthen habits, and expand access
- 7:57to teaching. That's a healthy balance. I can
- 8:08definitely see that. All right, let's talk about
- 8:12distraction. How does constant connectivity affect
- 8:16our spiritual lives? I mean, I think to the families
- 8:19where when they sat down for dinner, they used
- 8:22to have very meaningful conversations and sometimes
- 8:24these families find each other all just texting
- 8:28other people, looking down, not even looking
- 8:31at each other. And that just seems like not only
- 8:35a distraction, but an interruption in the family
- 8:38unit and the spiritual strength and health. of
- 8:42the family distraction is one of the greatest
- 8:50spiritual battles of our time silence is disappearing
- 8:54stillness is disappearing and yet scripture says
- 8:58be still and know that i am god technology isn't
- 9:02the enemy but unrestrained access to it can drown
- 9:05out the voice of god That's why digital Sabbath,
- 9:08quiet hours, and intentional disconnection are
- 9:11essential spiritual disciplines today. Disconnection
- 9:16becomes a form of worship. Yeah, I can see that.
- 9:19You know, I used to make it a habit once these
- 9:22smartphones and everything came about that every
- 9:25Sunday right after church, I would go shopping
- 9:28and I would leave my phone at home. And they
- 9:32say, oh, but what if you're into an accident?
- 9:34What if something happens? Well, what used to
- 9:36happen? I mean, there's plenty of people out
- 9:38there with phones that are going to call, do
- 9:41something. So if I need help, I think there's
- 9:43plenty out there. But, yeah, I used to kind of
- 9:45do a little self -disconnection there. So that's
- 9:49maybe something people need to do. Exactly. Rest
- 9:53is resistance. Okay. That makes sense. Well,
- 9:58as we look ahead. What role do you believe the
- 10:03church must play in the future of technology?
- 10:06I mean, we talk about integrating the church
- 10:09into the discussion. How do we do this and what
- 10:14part do we play? The church must become a moral
- 10:18compass in a world of innovation. We must teach
- 10:21ethics. We must model compassion. We must defend
- 10:25human dignity. We must guide conversations about
- 10:27identity. mental health and purpose technology
- 10:31may shape the tools of society but faith shapes
- 10:34the heart of society the future needs spiritual
- 10:37leadership more than ever and you know and that's
- 10:47a calling we cannot ignore not at all well dr
- 10:52mercer thank you for helping us see that faith
- 10:55and technology are not enemies They are partners
- 10:58when guided by wisdom, compassion, and purpose.
- 11:05Thank you, Pastor David. My hope is that believers
- 11:08will not fear innovation, but steward it. Technology
- 11:11is powerful, but God is sovereign. And thank
- 11:20you all for joining us. May you use every tool
- 11:23available to bring light, wisdom, hope. into
- 11:27the world around you. Let us close this session
- 11:33with a brief prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank
- 11:37you for this time together. We thank you for
- 11:40bringing this information to the people, the
- 11:43families, on how they best can use technology
- 11:48for the betterment of their spiritual health
- 11:51and their religious relationship. We ask that
- 11:54you keep all of us safe. in our travels. Again,
- 11:58thank Dr. Elias Mercer for his comments, and
