Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Okay, So we're here with Derek Shelton, manager of the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins. He's a little angry, by the way, at
- 0:17Speaker 1: our production staff because he didn't make the front end
- 0:20Speaker 1: right there, the manager's meeting.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What are we doing you guys?
- 0:24Speaker 3: New guys in there? I don't return production. It's unbelievable.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna yell at producer lady for the fact that
- 0:32Speaker 1: she didn't put you in.
- 0:33Speaker 3: That's good, and we run it.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Watch it'll be when this goes when this is Yes,
- 0:42Speaker 1: but do we put you Do you have a picture
- 0:44Speaker 1: of you in full Twins uniform.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'm sure Dustin can find a picture.
- 0:47Speaker 1: But we only have pictures of Dustin shirtless or really tight. Yes, yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 1: for super Scott to go super like so small. Really
- 0:58Speaker 1: it's a contest between him and dust And that's why
- 1:00Speaker 1: Scott couldn't come because the shirt cold, because they would
- 1:03Speaker 1: be over there having a legs off the whole time
- 1:05Speaker 1: shirt within the in the Fort Myers area. Yes, the
- 1:08Speaker 1: one medium shirt.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yes, yes, exactly. By the way, and when we put
- 1:13Speaker 3: you in, do we have to put your watch in?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah? Orris, you gotta go. A lot of guys wearing orses.
- 1:18Speaker 1: A lot of managers. They love the manager, Yeah, do they?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Because I asked Boonie about this and he was the
- 1:24Speaker 1: first one I noticed.
- 1:25Speaker 2: He's the first one. He's the og. Booneye is the og.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And then I think it went to Alex and I
- 1:30Speaker 2: and now it's kind of becauld.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But do you change your watch because you changed it?
- 1:34Speaker 3: If he changed the.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I changed it on all Booney stole the yellow from
- 1:39Speaker 2: me because I had the yellow first. So with uh
- 1:42Speaker 2: with the oars the big one, and then Schneid's wears
- 1:44Speaker 2: the big which is the actual right when it's the
- 1:47Speaker 2: big blue. But yeah, I'm getting ready to place my
- 1:49Speaker 2: new order it. Now there's sick but Booney Boney mixes
- 1:53Speaker 2: it up more than I do.
- 1:54Speaker 4: But you gotta be careful. Do you have to get
- 1:56Speaker 4: that monitored by the league, Because when I was playing
- 1:59Speaker 4: for the Rulers, Craig Council got in trouble because they
- 2:03Speaker 4: sent him a letter and they said he was wearing
- 2:05Speaker 4: an Apple watch, but it was really it was a
- 2:08Speaker 4: Mickey Mouse watch that he wore one day and all
- 2:11Speaker 4: the arms on.
- 2:12Speaker 3: The clock were broken.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But Major League Baseball sent him a letter that said
- 2:17Speaker 4: it was a you can't wear you can't wear Apple
- 2:19Speaker 4: watches on the you know when the Red Sox were
- 2:21Speaker 4: doing on their cheating and all that stuff like, so
- 2:24Speaker 4: do you have to get yours, take a picture of
- 2:26Speaker 4: it and get it monitored by There's there's.
- 2:29Speaker 2: No, uh, there's no. We're not getting any data here.
- 2:32Speaker 2: We're just looking cool, just looking stylish. No, it's just
- 2:37Speaker 2: all for show. It's it's for a cool looking band
- 2:41Speaker 2: and you know shiny, So yeah, we're going that way.
- 2:43Speaker 2: There's no you have said you have red Navy, red
- 2:47Speaker 2: mortaring a navy. I got a sick one that has
- 2:49Speaker 2: an ultimeter on it, because you know you definitely need
- 2:51Speaker 2: that on the field.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Step step you're on.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you got a yellow one for for the city
- 3:00Speaker 2: cannects because our city cannects are blue. So yeah, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: mean you gotta gotta make.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It look cool. Okay, listen, I'm all for it.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'mut out to our guy vjvjs or.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I love I love your energy.
- 3:12Speaker 5: You seem like you're in a good mood. I never
- 3:14Speaker 5: understood the pirates a decision, but I really understand Minnesota
- 3:17Speaker 5: wanting you to be at the helm. There's kind of
- 3:20Speaker 5: an emphasis of development versus competitiveness. How do you balance
- 3:25Speaker 5: that as a manager. Obviously you've been around the organization
- 3:27Speaker 5: the last couple of years as the bench coach, but
- 3:29Speaker 5: how do you balance Uh, you know, the the goal
- 3:31Speaker 5: moving forward.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I think that's a goal for for every manager in
- 3:35Speaker 2: markets like this Alon And it's a great question because
- 3:38Speaker 2: guys are getting to the big leagues a lot faster
- 3:40Speaker 2: than like when AJ and Kratzy were coming up. No,
- 3:44Speaker 2: because of the fact that you've got a ton of
- 3:45Speaker 2: minor league at bats. Don't take it personally. We know
- 3:47Speaker 2: the Joe Maher pictures, but I think there's so much
- 3:51Speaker 2: development that still goes on that we have to balance it.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We have to continue to teach. It's a large focus
- 3:57Speaker 2: within our camp right now is making sure that we
- 3:59Speaker 2: are developing.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Do you know these guys, how quickly do you do
- 4:05Speaker 1: you learn? Because you are coming from a different organization,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and then you say, well, we have to balance developing
- 4:10Speaker 1: and then the big league guys, how quickly do you
- 4:12Speaker 1: learn an organization?
- 4:13Speaker 2: Well, a lot of conversations in the off season, you
- 4:15Speaker 2: watch video, but still learning, you know. I got asked
- 4:17Speaker 2: the question yesterday by our local media, like have you
- 4:20Speaker 2: decided on this and I'm like, I've seen in person
- 4:22Speaker 2: thirty at bats, forty at bats. We're at this point
- 4:25Speaker 2: of spring training, so we have to use the full
- 4:27Speaker 2: spring training or at least up until the last three
- 4:29Speaker 2: or four days to evaluate. And then you guys, know,
- 4:31Speaker 2: the evaluation of spring training is still hard because the
- 4:35Speaker 2: fluctuation of innings, the fluctuation of how much you're playing.
- 4:37Speaker 2: You have to rely on the back of the baseball
- 4:39Speaker 2: card a little bit, because, I mean, you know this,
- 4:41Speaker 2: you played for a long time. What you do in
- 4:43Speaker 2: a major league game is way more important than what
- 4:45Speaker 2: you do in spring training.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Have you seen anybody that your preconceived idea was wrong
- 4:50Speaker 4: or maybe you are able to make a different evaluation
- 4:55Speaker 4: of them, somebody that since you've come in camp and seen.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Well, I think with Pitcher, you get a like seeing
- 5:01Speaker 2: TODs Bradley in person. You know, you don't understand ninety
- 5:04Speaker 2: seven is different for everybody, but you see the ball
- 5:06Speaker 2: come out of his hand, you see him attack. I mean,
- 5:08Speaker 2: he goes down and pitches against New York the other day.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And when you go to New York, you go to Tampa,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you're gonna get a big boy lineup. You're gonna get
- 5:14Speaker 2: their good players, and you're able to gauge off that
- 5:16Speaker 2: you watch Luke Keishael and how he runs the bases
- 5:19Speaker 2: and the intensity that he brings. I think there's little
- 5:22Speaker 2: things that you're never going to find out from, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 2: watching players on video or watching the new workouts until
- 5:28Speaker 2: you get him in game situations.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Has anything changed?
- 5:31Speaker 1: Falvey? Derek Falvey was here and then all of a
- 5:33Speaker 1: sudden he was right? Was he the one that brought
- 5:36Speaker 1: you here? Is he the main person that was I
- 5:38Speaker 1: don't think evolved in.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I think he was part of it because of the
- 5:42Speaker 2: fact that I was here before and Derek and I
- 5:43Speaker 2: had a relationship. But the interview process here was intense.
- 5:47Speaker 2: When you do interview, you to me with all the
- 5:48Speaker 2: pole ouds, No, I'm at that.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Joe, Carl, Tom, Billy, Bobby.
- 5:53Speaker 2: At that point I met with Joe and then I've
- 5:54Speaker 2: spent since then, spent a lot of time with Tom.
- 5:57Speaker 2: But in terms of coming here and doing interview process,
- 6:00Speaker 2: it's different because when you interviewed for managerial jobs, it's
- 6:03Speaker 2: a situation where they don't know you. So a lot
- 6:07Speaker 2: of the first part of the conversations is pleasantries. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: how is this with this group that sat out and
- 6:12Speaker 2: they knew me. I was here for two years and
- 6:13Speaker 2: it was just right from the jump. So it was
- 6:15Speaker 2: probably more intense than any any managerial interview I've been through.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You won, Derek, was something you would have.
- 6:21Speaker 5: What's something you would you want to do with the
- 6:24Speaker 5: twins that perhaps you didn't do when you were managing before,
- 6:28Speaker 5: Like you always want to do better than the year before,
- 6:31Speaker 5: right with something in terms of development of your managerial career,
- 6:34Speaker 5: would you like to take a step forward this season?
- 6:36Speaker 2: I think there's two components to that, and one of
- 6:39Speaker 2: it happened in the offseason, was just how you build
- 6:41Speaker 2: your staff. The first time you build your staff, you
- 6:44Speaker 2: really don't understand, you know, the complexity of a major
- 6:47Speaker 2: league staff and how they interact with your players, and
- 6:49Speaker 2: how you have to have different skill sets, how they
- 6:51Speaker 2: have to compliment the manager. So when we built our
- 6:54Speaker 2: staff this year was really cognizant of that. You know.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The first two hires we made were LaTroy Hawkins, who
- 6:59Speaker 2: bat high you probably played higher, you know, eighteen years
- 7:02Speaker 2: in the big leagues, and then Gretty Sizemore, guy that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: At one point, you know, every guy's doing over here.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Every time AJ puts slider down, they hit it. Grady
- 7:12Speaker 1: hit it in the seats, you know.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I mean we went after major league experience first because
- 7:16Speaker 2: I think the one thing that that I did learn
- 7:18Speaker 2: is how important that is. We have a lot of
- 7:20Speaker 2: skillspet set experts in our game today, but guys that
- 7:23Speaker 2: have been around the game, that have stood in the
- 7:25Speaker 2: box or stood on the mound. I felt it was
- 7:26Speaker 2: really important to add to our group. So I think
- 7:28Speaker 2: that's the first component. And then with today's players, and honestly,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I think it's something I screwed up in Pittsburgh and
- 7:34Speaker 2: need to do a better job of. Is you have
- 7:36Speaker 2: a conversation with a player and then you interpret how
- 7:42Speaker 2: you think they're going to interpret it, and you don't
- 7:43Speaker 2: have the follow up to make sure that what was
- 7:46Speaker 2: said is what was heard. And want to make sure
- 7:48Speaker 2: that that I personally do a better job of that
- 7:51Speaker 2: this time around.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Do you feel like you were in a place to
- 7:54Speaker 4: be able to make that follow up or did you
- 7:56Speaker 4: feel like you're a little hamstrung when you were in
- 7:59Speaker 4: Pittsburgh or is it just something that you're just learning
- 8:02Speaker 4: now as you know the second time around too.
- 8:05Speaker 2: No, I wasn't hamstrung at all. It was something that
- 8:08Speaker 2: you learned, and you know when you get four months
- 8:10Speaker 2: to go home and sit and reflect on it like
- 8:12Speaker 2: I did last year and actually do this side of
- 8:16Speaker 2: it where you're always right, I mean shocking. I was
- 8:18Speaker 2: always right before I was on this. Okay, this is
- 8:21Speaker 2: a bad so just this is the analogy of this.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Using this so kratsy and a lot, I'll direct this
- 8:26Speaker 2: at you because A J hasn't been wrong since two
- 8:29Speaker 2: thousand and one.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Since nineteen seventy six, seventy six, Yeah, shocking.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I bet your wife thinks that too. I think you
- 8:39Speaker 2: get a chance to sit home and reflect on it
- 8:40Speaker 2: and you're like, hey, I should do this differently, and
- 8:43Speaker 2: you know, I got the chance to do that's all summer.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That's great. Krats brought out Pittsburgh. So since you're taking
- 8:49Speaker 1: shots to me, it's my turn. Are you mad that
- 8:51Speaker 1: they're went out and spent money because you kind of were.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You kind of were in a weird spot right like
- 8:56Speaker 1: you went there and you're like, oh man, we got
- 8:59Speaker 1: some players and they didn't kind of And then here
- 9:02Speaker 1: comes Skiens and Jones and Keller and then Bubba Chandler,
- 9:06Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, here we go, and there still
- 9:07Speaker 1: won't do anything. And then all of a sudden they're like, hey, Dereck, thanks,
- 9:10Speaker 1: but now we're gonna go out and get Brandon Lao
- 9:12Speaker 1: and right all these guys.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm where my feet are. You know, I'm happy
- 9:16Speaker 2: with where I'm at. I love the group here. I'm
- 9:18Speaker 2: happy for that group. I'm happy for that fan base.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You know, that fan base deserves a winner. I'm happy
- 9:22Speaker 2: for Ben that they have the ability to go out
- 9:25Speaker 2: and spend some money, and they've done some good things
- 9:26Speaker 2: this offseason. And then on top of having Schemes which
- 9:29Speaker 2: is dynamic and the best pitcher in the game or
- 9:32Speaker 2: one of the best with scooball and then they have
- 9:34Speaker 2: Connor Griffin coming and I mean, this kid's going to
- 9:36Speaker 2: be special. He's going to be a superstar. So I'm
- 9:39Speaker 2: happy for that fan base. I mean, it was my
- 9:41Speaker 2: first opportunity to manage in the big leagues. I'm always
- 9:43Speaker 2: going to cherish that. But the fact they're going out
- 9:45Speaker 2: and doing those things, like there's no ill will at all.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Somebody else that didn't get brought back with Pittsburgh Andrew McCutcheon.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I don't know if you followed it, but do you
- 9:54Speaker 4: feel like that could have been handled differently in the
- 9:57Speaker 4: sense that you know what Cutch means that city and
- 10:00Speaker 4: what that city means to Cutch. Do you feel like
- 10:03Speaker 4: they could have handled it differently in the sense that
- 10:06Speaker 4: honored him differently or is he still do you feel
- 10:09Speaker 4: like he's still a viable big league piece that adds value.
- 10:13Speaker 2: To a team. He is definitely a viable big league piece.
- 10:17Speaker 2: ABS is going to be interesting with Cutch because I
- 10:20Speaker 2: don't know if there's anybody in the game that dominates
- 10:23Speaker 2: the strike zone as well as he does. I mean,
- 10:25Speaker 2: you play as long as as he has. I think
- 10:27Speaker 2: he's in his eighteenth season, and when he comes back
- 10:30Speaker 2: and tells you it's a ball or strike, it's a
- 10:31Speaker 2: ball or a strike. I mean, he's that good at
- 10:34Speaker 2: So there's definitely a fixture in terms of the first
- 10:36Speaker 2: part of that question. Kratsey, I don't know, because I
- 10:39Speaker 2: don't I didn't follow it close enough. I don't know
- 10:41Speaker 2: what the conversations were between Touch and the Pirates, so
- 10:44Speaker 2: it'd be really hard for me to to kind of
- 10:46Speaker 2: answer that.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Let's talk about your team now, not for the pirate
- 10:49Speaker 1: Craftsman's talk pirates just because he's still bitter at them
- 10:52Speaker 1: for calling him up originally.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So let's let's.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Ignore the pirates a little bit.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You're in Minnesota now. I came up with Minnesota right
- 11:00Speaker 1: and was here for a while, and I still know
- 11:03Speaker 1: a lot of people in Minnesota. Give give my friends
- 11:05Speaker 1: some hope for the Twins this year in twenty twenty six,
- 11:08Speaker 1: because there's I get text and phone calls and say, oh, man, Twins,
- 11:12Speaker 1: here we go again.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Give give us some hope.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, a good, good point. I think starting pitching you,
- 11:17Speaker 2: I mean, you know, even without Pablo, Yeah, even without Pablo.
- 11:20Speaker 2: And that is a blow. And if there's going to
- 11:23Speaker 2: be if you're going to take that, it happens early
- 11:26Speaker 2: in spring training, so at least you can get your
- 11:28Speaker 2: other guys work. But everybody likes to talk about, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 2: all the trades that happened last year at the deadline here.
- 11:34Speaker 2: But when you get a guy like Mick abelback and
- 11:36Speaker 2: you watch him go out and as good as he's
- 11:37Speaker 2: been in spring training, and then you have Joe Ryan,
- 11:40Speaker 2: who's a top end starter, you know, you have Sime
- 11:43Speaker 2: and you have Zebbi you have, you have Bailey Over,
- 11:47Speaker 2: you have that group you can win with pitching, and
- 11:50Speaker 2: again we're still trying to figure out our bullpen and
- 11:52Speaker 2: adding pieces to it. You have Byron Buxton, you have
- 11:55Speaker 2: a young player like Luke Kishel. There's a lot of
- 11:57Speaker 2: good things that could happen and then very you know, honestly,
- 12:01Speaker 2: we play in a division where no one has really
- 12:03Speaker 2: separated themselves, which I think is a good thing, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: it's going to be competitive and I'm looking forward to that.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think we made a really good move this offseason
- 12:11Speaker 2: and adding Josh Bell to our group. Number one, he's
- 12:13Speaker 2: a guy that you know can hit. But number two,
- 12:16Speaker 2: it adds another veteran presence in our clubhouse with Buck.
- 12:19Speaker 4: You were with the Rays before and you saw how
- 12:22Speaker 4: they could develop some pitching. It's different in every organization.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Have you seen anything You mentioned the bullpen. You got
- 12:29Speaker 4: to figure out how that's going to work. The Twins
- 12:32Speaker 4: have never gone out and bought their bullpens. I mean,
- 12:34Speaker 4: I think Glenn Perkins was probably the last guy that
- 12:36Speaker 4: they spent any money on. And I don't even think
- 12:39Speaker 4: I said it right. It's probably not Glenn Perkins. Something
- 12:40Speaker 4: of a different one. But anyway, have you seen something
- 12:43Speaker 4: that they're like, Hey, trust us, these are the guys
- 12:45Speaker 4: that we call up. This is the things that we
- 12:47Speaker 4: look for. Or is it kind of more your melding
- 12:50Speaker 4: and talking to the pitching coach and saying, hey, I
- 12:52Speaker 4: want this type of guy out of the bullpen. I
- 12:54Speaker 4: think it's organizational and I think we've seen over the
- 12:57Speaker 4: past that you can go out and spend money on
- 12:59Speaker 4: bullpen and then you know, bullpens don't function.
- 13:02Speaker 2: It's the most valuable, volatable place in our game. One year,
- 13:06Speaker 2: it goes back and forth. You know, guys are good,
- 13:08Speaker 2: guys are not good. So we're just looking for that consistency.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And I think the Twins, obviously over the course of
- 13:14Speaker 2: the last five or six years, maybe even longer, that
- 13:17Speaker 2: have done a good job identifying arms h and putting
- 13:21Speaker 2: them in the right position. So it's it's as much
- 13:23Speaker 2: an organizational blend as it is you know, my personal
- 13:25Speaker 2: opinion or our pitching group's personal opinion on it.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So we had Tito Francono on the other day and
- 13:32Speaker 4: he was like, when he was gone out of the game,
- 13:35Speaker 4: he goes he goes man that ninth inning.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's like a drug. He's like, I love it.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Do you get that feeling when it's you have a
- 13:43Speaker 4: lead and it's time to make them call to the
- 13:46Speaker 4: bullpen and you go ahead and do it, or even
- 13:47Speaker 4: if it's the eighth or the ninth inning, do you
- 13:49Speaker 4: get that like adrenaline spike that Tita was talking about.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I think you do. And you know, I think it's
- 13:55Speaker 2: more to your point, it's the eighth inning, it's the
- 13:57Speaker 2: ninth inning, sometimes it's the seventh inning, depending on where
- 13:59Speaker 2: you're at in the order. But yeah, that's that's that
- 14:02Speaker 2: rush you get. And honestly, it's something in Tito kind
- 14:05Speaker 2: of highlighted. It's something you miss when you're watching a
- 14:09Speaker 2: game when you're not involved in it. You don't get
- 14:11Speaker 2: that same rush. And it's nice to be able to
- 14:15Speaker 2: be back, to be able to get that rush in
- 14:16Speaker 2: the eighth and ninth inning.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Derek quick question before we let you go Anthony Bonda,
- 14:21Speaker 5: Los Angeles. All the ladies in LA were so sad
- 14:24Speaker 5: that the lot Los Angeles Dodgers let Bonda go away.
- 14:26Speaker 5: So watch out Minnesota because here he comes. Two part question,
- 14:30Speaker 5: what do you think he brings to a good bullpen
- 14:33Speaker 5: that you had mentioned he had a lot of electric
- 14:35Speaker 5: innings for LA in his time there. But also is
- 14:38Speaker 5: he still setting up as the barber for your club?
- 14:41Speaker 2: He has not set up for the barber yet. And
- 14:44Speaker 2: you know, he's a guy that I actually had history
- 14:46Speaker 2: with because I had him in Pittsburgh. Love the guy.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I did not know that about the ladies, but that
- 14:51Speaker 2: will definitely come up in a conversation, probably as soon
- 14:54Speaker 2: as this interview is over. So I love that. But
- 14:57Speaker 2: what he brings to our bullpen is swing and miss.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean he has ability to get left handers out.
- 15:01Speaker 2: He has ability to get right handers out. Uh you
- 15:03Speaker 2: know the slider that he can throw backfoot to right handers.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And when you have a left hander that is kind
- 15:07Speaker 2: of neutral like Anthony is, it's a definite separator, especially
- 15:11Speaker 2: with the three battered rule. But did not know the
- 15:13Speaker 2: ladies component of this in LA, but that will be
- 15:16Speaker 2: used against him very quickly. But he was a guy
- 15:19Speaker 2: that when he came available, I was really excited to
- 15:22Speaker 2: add to our bullpen.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Yeah it's the tats.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Just watch it's the tat. Okay, all right, there we go.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Are you the type of manager that has to have
- 15:31Speaker 1: your own thing or do you do you allow X
- 15:34Speaker 1: players and managers to come back to Twins camp? No,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we have got are you asking for a specific reason?
- 15:39Speaker 1: Like yes, I wanted to hear you're a direct Yeah,
- 15:42Speaker 1: we have a bunch of people. Morning was here before,
- 15:43Speaker 1: he was at the WBC with Canada. Tonya Leva just left.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I mean Moletor's coming in today. So yeah, we have
- 15:50Speaker 1: we have guys around.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Because I was.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Wondering, does TK come in? Do you bring like TK
- 15:54Speaker 1: and garden Hier.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Now I don't know when this is being aired, but
- 15:57Speaker 2: Guardy will be making an apparently very quickly.
- 16:00Speaker 3: What about Tom Kelly?
- 16:01Speaker 2: TK is not and but t K is around target field?
- 16:05Speaker 2: And the great thing about t K did you play
- 16:07Speaker 2: for t K? Yes, you're that Yes, yes I am.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I'm not that great like you though, but I'm not
- 16:13Speaker 2: there for a few years. And let's see how that.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Uh No, but t K. I think the great thing
- 16:18Speaker 2: about t K, and you would love this actually because
- 16:20Speaker 2: of the fact that you were here, is at my
- 16:22Speaker 2: opening press conference, t K pulled me aside and had
- 16:25Speaker 2: a conversation with me about some things that he thought
- 16:28Speaker 2: about should be the Twins way, and.
- 16:31Speaker 3: It was brilliant tell me because I want to know.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Okay, so yelling at young guys him like like the
- 16:38Speaker 1: PfP don't even get it's how it started. And t
- 16:43Speaker 1: K pulled me aside and talked to me about it.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And we have implemented some of the things that that
- 16:47Speaker 1: he felt were important, because you know, he's the ultimate
- 16:51Speaker 1: twins Man. We used to go out to the little
- 16:52Speaker 1: field out there and it's called the t K oh
- 16:55Speaker 1: I know in the Stelly field too. The Stelly's out
- 16:57Speaker 1: there now too, yes, And we used to sit out
- 16:58Speaker 1: there for hours and just I would stand there.
- 17:00Speaker 2: We're not out there for hours and we have not
- 17:03Speaker 2: had anybody get screamed at first base wise. But Morty
- 17:05Speaker 2: did tell me something that was really impactful during camp.
- 17:08Speaker 2: He's like, you know, TK used to tell me, if
- 17:11Speaker 2: I can stand out here and get on you on
- 17:12Speaker 2: this field in March and you can handle it and
- 17:15Speaker 2: you can't handle it, how are you going to handle
- 17:17Speaker 2: it at the Metrodome in October? And it rains true
- 17:21Speaker 2: the game?
- 17:22Speaker 1: Did Morneault also tell you the story about when Tom
- 17:24Speaker 1: Kelly told him, Hey, we need to go work on
- 17:26Speaker 1: fielding and and Morneau looks at him and goes I
- 17:29Speaker 1: got this bad.
- 17:29Speaker 3: He was in the cage. He goes, as long as
- 17:31Speaker 3: I got this, I don't need to go out.
- 17:32Speaker 2: He left it out and that actually happened. I would
- 17:34Speaker 2: like to know what the backside of that conversation from
- 17:36Speaker 2: he was out there on the field.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Let's just say the next.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And also next time you see TK asking about David Ortiz,
- 17:45Speaker 1: who's in the Hall of Fame.
- 17:46Speaker 3: He almost killed them One day.
- 17:47Speaker 1: We used to call it Iwo jima, the like the
- 17:49Speaker 1: night field out there and we were doing pop up drills.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Tom Kelly would always go to the far field. He
- 17:54Speaker 1: was a manager, right, he'd go to the far field.
- 17:56Speaker 1: David was playing first, I was catching. I was young,
- 17:58Speaker 1: so he didn't talk to me. Hits a pop up
- 18:01Speaker 1: and it falls, and he was so mad. He took
- 18:03Speaker 1: his fungo and he threw it and David had to
- 18:06Speaker 1: jump over it.
- 18:07Speaker 6: That would not be good, no good to be hit him.
- 18:13Speaker 6: But unfortunately he didn't hit anybody. But I got I
- 18:17Speaker 6: was able to get some knowledge and listen.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I look back on TK. When I was young, we
- 18:21Speaker 3: all did not like him, But now I look back
- 18:23Speaker 3: and he had a lot of really good ideas. Just
- 18:25Speaker 3: maybe the execution wasn't the best.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Well, I think the thing that we found out about
- 18:29Speaker 2: TK is his ideas stand the test of time, you know.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And I think with good teachers and good leaders, those messages,
- 18:37Speaker 2: you know, stand the length of time. And I really
- 18:38Speaker 2: appreciate I told someone. They asked me, they said, well,
- 18:41Speaker 2: what was your conversation like with t K at your
- 18:44Speaker 2: press conversation said it was not a conversation. It was
- 18:46Speaker 2: a monologue. It was one way. It was one way directed.
- 18:50Speaker 3: But I loved I appreciate the time that he took
- 18:52Speaker 3: the time, and he cares that much about it.
- 18:54Speaker 2: He was great.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I looked back, So Shelton, thank you. And by the way,
- 18:57Speaker 3: Molnors coming, Molly's gonna be looking for your job.
- 18:59Speaker 2: He had this one.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I know.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I was sat next to him for a while. Well, Selty,
- 19:06Speaker 1: thank you, man. I really wish you know them but
- 19:07Speaker 1: the best. And people know this about me. One thing
- 19:09Speaker 1: that I will say. People know me as a white sock,
- 19:11Speaker 1: but I still consider myself there's a small sliver.
- 19:14Speaker 3: I mean, that's a twin.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I love that. Until you get on the south side
- 19:16Speaker 2: and well, of course.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Chelty, Shelty, though, wait before we go, he almost
- 19:21Speaker 4: didn't shake your hand. He almost didn't shake hand. I mean,
- 19:25Speaker 4: I couldn't get a handshake. He's a white sock. He's
- 19:29Speaker 4: a white sock. You're an al Central opponent now, so
- 19:33Speaker 4: that's why he didn't do it, his little cal Rawley
- 19:35Speaker 4: Randy of Rosarina.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I'm Caldough. You're you'rery that sixty you hit. I'm advancing,
- 19:45Speaker 1: you're not. Thanks Italy, Okay, all right, thank you, Chelsey
- 19:51Speaker 1: all I gotta go. Yeah, I'm here with Royce Lewis
- 20:02Speaker 1: twin Star. By the way, Eric, if you want to
- 20:04Speaker 1: lose weight and stop eating sweetses, do like I didn't
- 20:06Speaker 1: give it up for lent, so it's easy, you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: just just become Catholic overnight and just give it up
- 20:11Speaker 1: for forty days and you'll over right.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I went to Catholic school. A good food, that's training, Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 3: pretty much.
- 20:25Speaker 2: What do you like to eat?
- 20:26Speaker 4: I love ice cream? I love ice cream. But what's
- 20:29Speaker 4: what's that thing for you that you're like? I know
- 20:31Speaker 4: I shouldn't have it, but I'm I'm gonna get after.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I love ice cream, chocolate chip cookies. I think
- 20:38Speaker 3: those are hard ones to beat. Man hogging'dss coffee is
- 20:40Speaker 3: my go to really. Yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 1: The ice cream, the ice cream you put that, you
- 20:44Speaker 1: know you can put the There's these restaurants to have
- 20:46Speaker 1: this thing of skillet and they bring out this cookie
- 20:47Speaker 1: and then they put the ice cream on top of
- 20:49Speaker 1: it and melts.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's called a perzuki.
- 20:53Speaker 4: It's called a perzuki. Pizza cooks.
- 20:55Speaker 3: I'm all in on the perzuki. It's it's good in
- 20:57Speaker 3: Fort Myers too. We got one like ten minutes away.
- 20:58Speaker 3: So it's really Oh yeah, I know where to do.
- 21:00Speaker 3: So you go there all the time. No, No, I
- 21:02Speaker 3: actually haven't been there anytime. They weigh these guys in now.
- 21:06Speaker 1: They weigh these guys in now every day when they
- 21:09Speaker 1: walk in and do their body changed a lot.
- 21:11Speaker 3: It's totally changed, even since i've you know, come up
- 21:14Speaker 3: and it's just different. But it's unique and I think
- 21:16Speaker 3: it's growing. You can tell.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Okay, So I told this story the other day and
- 21:20Speaker 1: I got to ask Roysis since he's we're in Twins camp.
- 21:23Speaker 1: When I was at the Twins, we didn't when I
- 21:24Speaker 1: first got here, we didn't even lift weights.
- 21:26Speaker 2: We didn't even know.
- 21:26Speaker 3: We didn't have a weight room here. We had nothing.
- 21:28Speaker 3: We just we bare.
- 21:30Speaker 1: We didn't have a string coach. Really we had one,
- 21:32Speaker 1: but he was just kind of there because they didn't
- 21:34Speaker 1: like it.
- 21:36Speaker 3: We also.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Had like no food restriction, so now they have dinner
- 21:41Speaker 1: and everything here for you. Oh yeah, so do you
- 21:45Speaker 1: eat three meals a day at the ballpark? Because for me,
- 21:47Speaker 1: it was like we got a like hot Rod, who
- 21:49Speaker 1: was one of our assistant clubies, is the equipment guy here.
- 21:53Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, when you guys were here, there was
- 21:54Speaker 1: peeb and jay and maybe a tuna fish sandwich.
- 21:57Speaker 3: So what you guys get three meals a day at
- 21:59Speaker 3: this place?
- 21:59Speaker 1: Now?
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yeah, they serve breakfast and lunch, no dinner the day games,
- 22:03Speaker 3: no dinner because everyone's pretty much gone by, okay, so
- 22:06Speaker 3: it's really nice. Honestly, I get the same meal every
- 22:08Speaker 3: day for breakfast. Lunch is great. Breakfast it's an egg
- 22:12Speaker 3: scramble with bell pepper, spinach and sausage and him, gosh,
- 22:15Speaker 3: you get change. So it changed so much leaned out
- 22:18Speaker 3: over here, you know what I mean? Changed so much?
- 22:20Speaker 4: All right, last last Twins throwback question, because AJ and
- 22:25Speaker 4: the Joe Mauer poster behind you are what we what
- 22:29Speaker 4: what We'll discuss the whole time here, but last one.
- 22:32Speaker 4: This is how much it's changed too. AJ used to
- 22:36Speaker 4: have to pay for his extra sets of equipment because
- 22:40Speaker 4: the team wouldn't.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Pay for No. No, no, no, no, no no. Let's
- 22:45Speaker 3: get the story straight.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It wasn't extra.
- 22:47Speaker 1: It was we asked for a fleece. We asked when
- 22:50Speaker 1: the first fleeces came out. The Twins said, no, we
- 22:54Speaker 1: play in the Metrodome.
- 22:55Speaker 2: We don't.
- 22:55Speaker 3: We don't have the money for it.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It's seventy two degrees every day, so we don't need
- 22:59Speaker 1: the flee And we're like, but every other team has
- 23:02Speaker 1: them and they wear them when they come to the Metro.
- 23:04Speaker 3: No, guys, we can't have it. So we had a player,
- 23:06Speaker 3: Mike Fetters, buy him for the whole team. Good player,
- 23:09Speaker 3: good teammate, right, good, thank you, But no, I think
- 23:12Speaker 3: that's a little tough. You know, you still have eighty
- 23:13Speaker 3: one games not in the Metro Dome. Thank you. I
- 23:15Speaker 3: need that fleece, right. Plus it's swaggy, that's good.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Look.
- 23:18Speaker 1: That was when they like nowadays everyone has seven hoodies,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know, this and that, shorts and all this stuff.
- 23:24Speaker 3: We had nothing. I like the old school baggy look.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Even in the NBA you bring that kind of look back.
- 23:29Speaker 3: It looks way better. The pajamas. Yeah, the pajamas.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I like it.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I like, how's how's camp going. It's going wonderful. Man.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I feel like I've finally grown into a good routine
- 23:38Speaker 3: and understood like where I need to be in camp
- 23:40Speaker 3: for the season and get ready for March twenty sixth.
- 23:42Speaker 3: And it's it's exciting having quality at bats for the
- 23:46Speaker 3: most part. You know, I'm still human. I'm going to
- 23:48Speaker 3: chase that change up that looks really enticing to it.
- 23:49Speaker 3: But it's fun. It's going really good.
- 23:52Speaker 2: What do you what do you need?
- 23:54Speaker 4: You said, I feel like I know what I need
- 23:56Speaker 4: to do to get ready for the season.
- 23:58Speaker 2: What does that look like?
- 23:58Speaker 4: What is the difference?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the biggest difference, honestly was two things. One confidence
- 24:04Speaker 3: and two is a good routine. Having a great routine
- 24:07Speaker 3: in which I come in every morning, I do the
- 24:10Speaker 3: same thing. It's pretty much like rinse, clean, repeat, and
- 24:14Speaker 3: that's all I'm doing right now in spring and it's
- 24:15Speaker 3: really nice. It's pretten fun and honestly, if it makes
- 24:18Speaker 3: my body feel better too, so yeah, I think for me, honestly,
- 24:21Speaker 3: it was just like having a good you know routine
- 24:23Speaker 3: in the off season too. That started right away, which
- 24:25Speaker 3: is you know, running and feeling confident my legs again,
- 24:28Speaker 3: lifting heavy so I have you know, enough power and
- 24:31Speaker 3: gain that power and I feel like every day I
- 24:32Speaker 3: can come to the ballpark and hit a home run
- 24:34Speaker 3: and not feel like it's coming off the back week.
- 24:36Speaker 3: And so those are two things for me that I
- 24:38Speaker 3: focused on right as well as you know, eat and
- 24:40Speaker 3: ride and just having fun with my family and taking
- 24:43Speaker 3: advantage of that off season. Carried over really well into
- 24:46Speaker 3: spring and have been kind of just on that repeat schedule. Up.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I guess that's that, crowds.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Sorry crowds. I thought you were going it's me. You'll
- 24:57Speaker 1: put the camera on me. Oh it slash. My slack
- 25:00Speaker 1: is whack today, so just ignore the slack. I'm trying
- 25:03Speaker 1: to keep up and it's jumping around. So third base
- 25:07Speaker 1: for you, how do you stay on the field at
- 25:10Speaker 1: third base every day? Because when you're on the field,
- 25:12Speaker 1: you're an unbelievable player. How do we get you to
- 25:14Speaker 1: stay at third base every day?
- 25:16Speaker 3: I think it's just going out there and playing third
- 25:17Speaker 3: base every day too. This is gonna be huge, you know,
- 25:19Speaker 3: playing less DH at the end of last season. That
- 25:22Speaker 3: was huge and it helped me kind of be healthy
- 25:24Speaker 3: for the last eighty games there where I was available
- 25:26Speaker 3: and ready to go for Rocko whoever, wherever you needed me.
- 25:30Speaker 3: And playing third now that I feel like I've kind
- 25:32Speaker 3: of settled in and got that confidence as well. Over there,
- 25:35Speaker 3: it was just so uncomfortable at first. You know, it's
- 25:37Speaker 3: a totally different position than short even though yeah, I
- 25:40Speaker 3: left side the endfield, but at shortstop you have that time,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you have a little bit more range naturally, just by
- 25:45Speaker 3: being you know, ten feet further back, whatever it is.
- 25:47Speaker 3: And at thirty you really got to cut the distance
- 25:49Speaker 3: and get those plays, get those short hops, and once
- 25:52Speaker 3: you catch the ball, they should be out, you know.
- 25:54Speaker 3: And so we're working on making those good throws. And
- 25:56Speaker 3: it all starts with your feet. And I think that
- 25:58Speaker 3: is is key for me, is just go out there
- 26:00Speaker 3: every day and that'll help me be out there every day.
- 26:02Speaker 1: What's the difference? Explain that to people. Is it just quicker?
- 26:05Speaker 1: Is everything just quicker? The angle is different? What because
- 26:07Speaker 1: you came up as a short stop, right and obviously
- 26:11Speaker 1: now you're at third base, is just the angles? Is
- 26:13Speaker 1: the quickness of the game what's the biggest difference that
- 26:15Speaker 1: you've noticed.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the toughest place for me are you know,
- 26:19Speaker 3: going down the line farther away from first balls hit
- 26:22Speaker 3: one hundred and sixteen off of you know, Stanton's bat
- 26:24Speaker 3: coming at you know, and you're playing like middle depth
- 26:27Speaker 3: because double play depth, and those are the kind of
- 26:30Speaker 3: ones that are like you get you back on your
- 26:31Speaker 3: heels a little bit more and as you settle in,
- 26:33Speaker 3: you're like, okay, like, you know, I need to play
- 26:35Speaker 3: underwater over here, I got plenty of time as soon
- 26:37Speaker 3: as you catch it, like they should be out. And
- 26:39Speaker 3: so I think, you know, the best players in the game,
- 26:41Speaker 3: they kind of play so smooth over there. Manny Machado.
- 26:45Speaker 3: You know, Bragman does a great job. There's a bunch
- 26:46Speaker 3: of guys, but all those guys they play underwater. Keep
- 26:49Speaker 3: Brian Hayes is wonderful and when you watch them, it's
- 26:51Speaker 3: like slow motions. So that's that for me is the key.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Well, then, any advice for Bobaschet because he just went
- 26:56Speaker 1: from short to third with the Mets. If you could
- 26:58Speaker 1: talk to Bobachet, what would your advice be for him?
- 27:00Speaker 3: I mean, I think Bo is very talented, he'll figure
- 27:02Speaker 3: it out. But I think the best thing I would
- 27:04Speaker 3: say to Bo would be just, you know, cutting the
- 27:05Speaker 3: distance was so huge for me, and it took me
- 27:07Speaker 3: like a year and a half to figure that out myself.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And so and when when what I mean by cut
- 27:12Speaker 3: the distance is like, if the ball is here and
- 27:14Speaker 3: you can go, you know, like let's say ninety degrees
- 27:16Speaker 3: towards it to pick it up, that's two more hops.
- 27:19Speaker 3: But if you go at a forty five and get
- 27:21Speaker 3: it and it's only one more hop, it gives you
- 27:23Speaker 3: that much more time to get the runner out it.
- 27:25Speaker 3: You know, it's a longer throw. You can set your feet,
- 27:27Speaker 3: take your time. And typically runners, especially in the big
- 27:30Speaker 3: leagues playing on one hundred and sixty two games, they
- 27:32Speaker 3: see you catch the ball and they see you set
- 27:33Speaker 3: your feet right, they're probably gonna not give it one
- 27:35Speaker 3: hundred and twenty percent effort down the line. So it
- 27:37Speaker 3: gives you a little bit more time.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Outsider's point of view, when people when your name's brought up,
- 27:42Speaker 4: when Byron Buckston's Name's brought up, they say, man, the
- 27:45Speaker 4: sky's the limit. The sky's the limit. They can stay healthy.
- 27:48Speaker 4: And I've heard you say about your routine and everything
- 27:51Speaker 4: and getting that under wraps. What can you and or
- 27:54Speaker 4: what have you been able to glean from Byron going
- 27:57Speaker 4: through the different injuries, weird injuries here and there, and
- 28:00Speaker 4: then putting together a full season and then boom, Byron Boxer.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know he's a top ten MVP candidate.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Buck is amazing, man, I'll tell you that right now,
- 28:11Speaker 3: real quick. But you know, the talent. I think when
- 28:13Speaker 3: you have so much talent, you got a quick twitch ability.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I think sometimes it's harder to harness that. And I
- 28:18Speaker 3: praise the Bobby Wits and the guys that are able
- 28:20Speaker 3: to you know, have that quick twitch ability but also
- 28:22Speaker 3: stay healthy because they're able to harness that ability. And
- 28:25Speaker 3: I think that's the name of the game, honestly, is
- 28:27Speaker 3: you know, you have so much God given ability and
- 28:31Speaker 3: honestly responsibility for the game to be out there and
- 28:33Speaker 3: be healthy and for your team. And I think harnessing
- 28:36Speaker 3: that in is something that's been huge. And I think
- 28:38Speaker 3: for me this year that's the biggest takeaway as well
- 28:40Speaker 3: going in the spring is I was able to harness
- 28:42Speaker 3: that ability. I don't have to run one hundred and
- 28:43Speaker 3: twenty percent down the line. I'm able to, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 3: take my time understand when hey, I'm out. These guys
- 28:49Speaker 3: are really good to They drive Mercedes too, you know,
- 28:51Speaker 3: and so just play the game and have fun doing it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Humble Bragg by the way, too, they drive Mercedes too,
- 28:56Speaker 1: not that they drive Mercedes, but too.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Yeah, Lewis drives and Mercedes. Good to note, Royce, you
- 29:02Speaker 5: have a new manager at the Helm, but it's not
- 29:06Speaker 5: a guy you're unfamiliar with. Obviously, Derek Shelton's been there
- 29:09Speaker 5: for the last couple of seasons. What has his managerial
- 29:12Speaker 5: style have been like with you in terms of I know,
- 29:14Speaker 5: guys are always talking about level of communication, open communication,
- 29:17Speaker 5: and he seems to be that guy. What more can
- 29:19Speaker 5: you tell us about what you've noticed as him as
- 29:21Speaker 5: your skipper.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Yeah, honestly, the huge communication piece, but also the set
- 29:27Speaker 3: and the standard of you know, everyone's gonna be working hard,
- 29:29Speaker 3: everyone's gonna be going on the road in spring. Everyone's well,
- 29:31Speaker 3: you have to go on the road. Yeah, we've been
- 29:32Speaker 3: going on the road. You got them great pants? Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 3: the great pants are in the locker room. Bucks. They
- 29:36Speaker 3: don't have them great pants. He's he's on the road,
- 29:39Speaker 3: he's in Houston. So, uh no, it's just set in
- 29:43Speaker 3: a standard. You know, like we're a younger team obviously,
- 29:45Speaker 3: and so to be able to, you know, have that
- 29:47Speaker 3: opportunity to set the standard for the young guys to
- 29:49Speaker 3: see a good example, you know, from Buck, from Josh Bell,
- 29:52Speaker 3: from Guaranteini, all these guys that have been there, done that, Ryan, Jeffers,
- 29:56Speaker 3: Joe Ryan, even like his first game, guys on the
- 29:59Speaker 3: road like Temple Ba. So you know, we're not like
- 30:02Speaker 3: leaning towards favorites. We're all playing as a team. He
- 30:04Speaker 3: got twenty six different leaders in that locker room, and
- 30:06Speaker 3: that's how we're gonna play. And Sheltey's doing a great job. Yeah,
- 30:08Speaker 3: but that doesn't mean just because your leader doesn't that
- 30:09Speaker 3: means you don't go on the road. Yeah, sometimes you
- 30:12Speaker 3: got some time now. Yeah yeah, I guess so, but
- 30:15Speaker 3: I don't feel like that. I don't I never act
- 30:17Speaker 3: like that.
- 30:18Speaker 4: Okay, So yeah, Royce, don't change, don't let him, don't
- 30:22Speaker 4: let don't let that salt just get all over your
- 30:25Speaker 4: all over your nice uniform. Ajl aj.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah he's got he's got LaTroy here now, trust me,
- 30:34Speaker 1: he ain't seen salty yet.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Now, there's there's some salt, But my question was gonna
- 30:39Speaker 4: be Shelton was the bench coach. Derek Shelton was the
- 30:42Speaker 4: bench coach when he was here. Now he's the manager.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Is it hard for some guys when you see somebody
- 30:48Speaker 4: that was in a different role now being the hefe
- 30:51Speaker 4: Is it hard to have the same relationship because it's like, well,
- 30:56Speaker 4: you know, I was this, now I'm this?
- 30:59Speaker 3: Or has Shelton been able to.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Meld into that, to easily ease into that role and
- 31:06Speaker 4: be the same guy that he was before?
- 31:08Speaker 3: Yeah, great question. Absolutely not with Shelta. You know, I
- 31:11Speaker 3: think he was born to be a head coach. I
- 31:13Speaker 3: truly do. I think he leads. He's like a born leader.
- 31:16Speaker 3: He leads very well, very smooth, very easy. It's like gravitational,
- 31:20Speaker 3: like everyone kind of goes towards him, asking questions, very
- 31:23Speaker 3: open to you know, his style coaching, which I really
- 31:26Speaker 3: you know, want to applaud him on that for one.
- 31:28Speaker 3: But also the staff he put together is helping him
- 31:31Speaker 3: be better persons as well. You know, having Grady Sizemore,
- 31:33Speaker 3: La Troy Hawkins back here, it's gonna help all of
- 31:36Speaker 3: our young guys gain some knowledge. But also just kind
- 31:38Speaker 3: of calm us down a little bit when times gets stressful.
- 31:40Speaker 3: There's gonna be points in season when we go, you
- 31:42Speaker 3: know too and eight a ten game road stand or
- 31:45Speaker 3: something crazy like that. And to have those guys that
- 31:48Speaker 3: have played the game at a high level and played
- 31:50Speaker 3: it very well is gonna be huge for for us
- 31:52Speaker 3: going forward. No doubt. Is there anybody left from when
- 31:55Speaker 3: Shelton was here? Though? Was Buck even here? Yeah? Buck
- 31:58Speaker 3: was here?
- 31:58Speaker 1: Buck was the only one, right my first big league
- 32:00Speaker 1: spring training camp? Okay, so yeah, because I'm like you,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I know you weren't here when in the big leagues
- 32:04Speaker 1: when Shelton was here, you no, But if my first
- 32:06Speaker 1: big league camp, so I met him. He's the one
- 32:08Speaker 1: that sent you down. The office was Rocco, But you know,
- 32:13Speaker 1: Sheldon had everything to do with it.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Right, Actually, I'm sorry it wasn't Rocco. Oh, Molly was
- 32:18Speaker 3: still here? Where is that old part? Man? He's around,
- 32:22Speaker 3: he's around, he's good man. He's supposed to be here.
- 32:25Speaker 3: I'm looking for I've been looking for him. I haven't
- 32:28Speaker 3: seen him here yet. You're right, that's a good point.
- 32:29Speaker 3: But he's I played crazy, right, what a player? Yeah?
- 32:34Speaker 3: He played with some stud players, played.
- 32:35Speaker 2: With some old people. That's what I did.
- 32:38Speaker 3: All right before we let you go.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I have to ask you this because I've always I've
- 32:41Speaker 1: never gotten a chance to ask because you have one
- 32:43Speaker 1: of the great quotes of all time, and you I
- 32:45Speaker 1: don't know if it's I'm gonna attribute to you.
- 32:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:48Speaker 1: And you said something like I don't slump, or I
- 32:50Speaker 1: don't believe in slumps or do you remember what you said?
- 32:54Speaker 1: There was something about like I won't go over twenty
- 32:56Speaker 1: or I don't do slumps. Do you remember what you said?
- 33:00Speaker 3: Yeah, like the word like I don't I don't think
- 33:02Speaker 3: of it as like a slump. I think of it
- 33:04Speaker 3: as like you know, because I think when you put
- 33:06Speaker 3: yourself in that mind frame of like, oh I'm slumping,
- 33:09Speaker 3: just that's like, oh, everything's going wrong for me, and
- 33:12Speaker 3: it's very negative. I think that's what I was trying
- 33:15Speaker 3: to portray. I think if you knew who I was
- 33:16Speaker 3: as a person, you'd be like, oh, okay, like I'm
- 33:18Speaker 3: not a cocky guy. I'm not gonna say I'm not dude,
- 33:20Speaker 3: I'm a hitter. We're gonna get out a lot, of course,
- 33:23Speaker 3: so I expect to get out. It's gonna happen a
- 33:25Speaker 3: ton more. But when I said that, I meant initially like,
- 33:27Speaker 3: I don't do that, that word, like, I don't put
- 33:29Speaker 3: myself in that negative headspace. I really just because they're like, oh,
- 33:33Speaker 3: you went over three yesterday. I was the first time
- 33:35Speaker 3: you went hit list da da da. I remember all
- 33:37Speaker 3: about it. Trust me, that was a tough time for me.
- 33:40Speaker 3: People take my words out of context.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, shoot, that's what it was awesome because
- 33:44Speaker 1: what you said, though I took it the way you
- 33:45Speaker 1: said it, like I don't want to talk. I'm not
- 33:48Speaker 1: going to talk like that because it brings me down,
- 33:50Speaker 1: makes me think bad. And I think some people were like, oh,
- 33:53Speaker 1: this guy goes over five, like you know, oh we can't.
- 33:55Speaker 3: He doesn't.
- 33:56Speaker 1: He thinks he's too cool, right, And I didn't think
- 33:57Speaker 1: it like that at all. Yeah, I wish I would
- 33:59Speaker 1: have had that, cause I'm like, go for seven. I'm going,
- 34:02Speaker 1: oh my gosh, Tom Kelly is not going to play
- 34:03Speaker 1: me for a month.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Oh gosh.
- 34:05Speaker 3: It's so easy to freak out and get stressed out
- 34:08Speaker 3: and bring that home. And I don't accept to do that,
- 34:12Speaker 3: you know, I choose to leave it at the field,
- 34:13Speaker 3: like you know, at the end of the day, it
- 34:15Speaker 3: is a game that we're playing for fun, and you
- 34:17Speaker 3: got to, you know, accept that blessing and just remember
- 34:19Speaker 3: that how much fun you're having. Like I'm playing out
- 34:22Speaker 3: there like I'm a ten year old kid, and when
- 34:23Speaker 3: I'm not doing that, it does feel like I'm a
- 34:25Speaker 3: alove and it's not very fun. And so I choose to,
- 34:28Speaker 3: you know, play like a ten year old and not
- 34:30Speaker 3: be in that negative headspace. I love it. I love it.
- 34:32Speaker 3: To explain.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Please, we're gonna talk after he leaves, and I want
- 34:35Speaker 1: to learn how to do that, because that's amazing.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Yeah, Usually it takes a much more veteran player to
- 34:40Speaker 5: realize you can leave it at the game and just
- 34:43Speaker 5: try to let it go. You have to have a
- 34:44Speaker 5: memory of a goldfish, like Ted Lesso says, Right, Royce,
- 34:47Speaker 5: we appreciate you very much, man, stay healthy. You are
- 34:50Speaker 5: such a good star in this game. We're looking forward
- 34:53Speaker 5: to seeing what you can do this season. Thanks for
- 34:55Speaker 5: taking the time.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Hey, thank you guys. I really appreciate it. Man, it's
- 34:58Speaker 3: been great. See a j man not not salty, all right,
- 35:03Speaker 3: He's pretty salty. I'm not gonna lie
- 35:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I
