- 0:23Hello everybody, welcome back to the Easy Double podcast.
- 0:26I believe we're on episode 18. Feel a bit out of sorts because
- 0:31I missed one last week. Thankfully I'm back with the
- 0:33boys. I'm joined with or joined by
- 0:37Owen Smith. How are you?
- 0:38Free long run on Sunday morning. I'm doing well, had a big day
- 0:43yesterday and then went to a concert last night, so I'll
- 0:46normally get my long run done pretty early on a Sunday
- 0:49morning, but I'm going to push it out till the afternoon for
- 0:52this recording and then I'll probably go back to bed after to
- 0:55be honest. Yeah, works well the the slow
- 0:59start for the long run after you you just telling us off?
- 1:02How many steps did you do yesterday?
- 1:0546,000 steps between the two sessions and then walking around
- 1:11at a Zac Bryan concert. So yeah, the legs are slight, a
- 1:16little bit tired. I have a down week next week
- 1:17though, so yeah, it's all right. Yeah, no wonder you knackered.
- 1:22I wonder what distance that that equates to in terms of like half
- 1:25I've walked. It's probably like 40 yard K
- 1:28isn't it? It's about 1000 steps a
- 1:30kilometer. I'll.
- 1:32Check here now. Sometimes, like if I just get
- 1:35out of bed and go for like a 10K jog, I'll end up on maybe 8000
- 1:40or so steps like first thing in the morning.
- 1:42So you've probably walked fair few kilometers there.
- 1:46And the average step length for males is 2.6 feet, so 46,000
- 1:51steps equals 22.6 miles. What's that?
- 1:57What's a marathon? 21 A.
- 1:58Marathon is 26 and 2. I'd say though, I'd say that
- 2:02you'd when you're running, your stride length would be
- 2:05comfortably more than yeah than that you'd have to be around a
- 2:08marathon that's. Crazy.
- 2:10Good day. And we're also joined by Dean
- 2:14Menzies, holding the 4th as per usual down in Perth.
- 2:19How are you doing? Good mate.
- 2:21On holiday with the family from tomorrow.
- 2:23So yeah, looking forward to that.
- 2:25And yeah, what is it Sunday afternoon?
- 2:30So very, very relaxing. Looking forward to having a
- 2:33chat. Bit of bit of house admin to be
- 2:36done, then wrap up before you go away.
- 2:38Yeah, we're, yeah, we've successfully farmed out the kids
- 2:42to my parents, which is very nice.
- 2:44We're hiring a motorhome tomorrow and then heading down
- 2:48South, so we'll add a little bit of work to tidy up and then
- 2:51we'll pack the pack the motorhome up and yeah, head head
- 2:56off. Try and squeeze in a run first
- 2:58thing tomorrow and then away we go.
- 3:00Have you booked onto a couple of sites then, or just one site or
- 3:04what? Would you believe I haven't
- 3:05booked all of the sites yet? Just hails aware of that.
- 3:16She is and it's winter so so access is is easier but this
- 3:23reminds me I need to cook insurance.
- 3:25And stuff. But we should look, it's a, it's
- 3:33like being a turtle. You sort of got a home.
- 3:35The the car's the home, worst case scenario, isn't it?
- 3:37So we should be. Yeah, exactly.
- 3:39Don't even need the size, just pull inside the road.
- 3:42Just do a drive through Maccas and away we go.
- 3:46You know, in, in France, they have on the, because the
- 3:50motorway or the highway, whatever is a toll road.
- 3:53So you have to pay to be on it. So the service stations like
- 3:56every 20 K or so and they're all very well maintained because
- 4:00it's on the toll road. So you can just pull in park in
- 4:03the service station overnight and they have showers like nice
- 4:06facilities in there in the morning and off you park.
- 4:09So I guess you can look at that as like your accommodation fee
- 4:14essentially to be paying to be on the toll.
- 4:16We, yeah, back when my old housemate, his mum leases
- 4:21motorhomes and we used to hire them for the Bustleton like Half
- 4:26Iron Man and Iron Man competitions that are down
- 4:28South. And yeah, we wouldn't book a
- 4:31campsite. We would just drive around,
- 4:34follow the race. Not that that's probably the
- 4:36recommended thing to do. Enough with the the caravan and
- 4:40then the motor home. So I'm sure we'll get get back
- 4:42to that. Next week we'll hear about your
- 4:44adventures, so I just wanted to thank Owen for his hosting
- 4:49duties last week. Fantastic job I did TuneIn
- 4:53unlike some, but yeah, it was a good episode lads.
- 4:58We tried. There was you missed like the
- 5:01busiest week ever. It was crazy the amount of
- 5:03running. We were like me and you were
- 5:05like, oh shit, what results do we put in?
- 5:09I think you knew. That's why he planned it,
- 5:11planned it that way, just to teach us a lesson.
- 5:14Yeah, be like going off and the financial year.
- 5:19Literally. By the way, on the on the stag
- 5:23that I was on last week, the stag's dad, he was in.
- 5:26He was a seriously talented runner back in his day.
- 5:29He has 1402 in his locker and a 2938.
- 5:34Might have to replace us on the pod.
- 5:36Yeah, no, maybe we could dial him in one one week.
- 5:39We should actually. Because he used to run for Have
- 5:43you heard of Salford Harriers Owen?
- 5:45Yeah. Isn't that Josh's team?
- 5:46No. Yeah, it is, isn't it?
- 5:48Yeah, I got one of their best, Yeah.
- 5:54That's good. Like people who run like back in
- 5:57the day, we always think what could they run today like that
- 6:00fourteen O 2 what was that worth today on a like a flat Rd. 5K in
- 6:05the Super shoes. I don't think because this guy
- 6:08would be now in his 60s, I could be wrong but I don't reckon back
- 6:13then a 5K and A10K was what it is now.
- 6:18As in like there's that much focus on having a good time for
- 6:21it. They used to run like 5 miles
- 6:22and stuff and 10 miles so. It would have been three mile
- 6:25for the 5K. Yes, and maybe his he'll have a
- 6:28three mile time, which is perhaps a little bit better on
- 6:31paper because they would have put more focus into that than a
- 6:345K Yeah. Anyway, let's get cracking with
- 6:39these results because there are a lot.
- 6:41It's a strange one this because we're recording on the Sunday we
- 6:45missed some. So it feels like we're ahead of
- 6:47time because we're going early, but then we're also behind the
- 6:49game. Anyway, we'll acknowledge what
- 6:52was last week. So there was Stockholm Diamond
- 6:54League, at which there was a women's 800.
- 6:58Georgia Hunter Bell, the British athlete, got up in lane 3,
- 7:03almost lane 4. She came from absolutely
- 7:05nowhere. She was, I watched her back
- 7:07yesterday, coming on to the final 100 meters.
- 7:10She was sick. And then she got out into lane 3
- 7:13and absolutely dropped it in a 157 as well.
- 7:17So it's pretty quick stink. What's the fastest Keely's run
- 7:22in the past five years? It's under 155.
- 7:26I think 154 no. Really, she's that 8, the 800
- 7:33and the women's seems wide open based on Keely just not being
- 7:37around. Yes, I know she's she's training
- 7:39and stuff, but she every time she tries to race she keeps
- 7:42picking up a niggle. So it's interesting to see what
- 7:44will happen with that. I heard that Mary Moira was
- 7:49being weird in that race though. Oh yeah, the commentator was, it
- 7:53was fuming because what was he, what were they saying that she
- 7:57she wants it slow because she fancies herself kicking it down?
- 8:01So they had a Pacer and obviously the Pacers going out
- 8:06to run pretty quick, but straight away Mary Moira was way
- 8:10off the pacer and then the hole grew, decided to sit behind Mary
- 8:14Mora as well. So the compensator was like,
- 8:16what are they doing? They're like the plane into her
- 8:18hands. They're letting her have it how
- 8:20she wants, like just go with the pace.
- 8:22But anyway, Georgia Hunter Belgaro.
- 8:24Mary, she's run one 54150. Kelly, that's so.
- 8:28Fast. What's the world?
- 8:29What's the world? Record?
- 8:30153 I think. Have you seen that world record?
- 8:33No, who? Who has it?
- 8:34It's. From like, from like a different
- 8:37era. They're like, they're like
- 8:39musculature of the athlete is very suspicious looking.
- 8:44They're built like a gridiron player.
- 8:46We'll, we'll get to it after this, after this recording, I'm
- 8:50going to go and take it out. Maybe might as well link it to
- 8:54the story as well now, OK? Be part of our double trouble
- 9:00later. There was a women's 3K also, of
- 9:05which Linden Hall, the Australian, was the winner in
- 9:09830.01. So the context, George Griffiths
- 9:14has the national record then 824.
- 9:18So that's a fantastic run from London.
- 9:21I can't remember how this race played out, but I think it was
- 9:24obviously come down to a kick again.
- 9:26And Linden's got that 815 hundred, doesn't she?
- 9:30Yeah, I think the front too. Didn't they gap Lyndon a little
- 9:33bit, but then that sort of then Lyndon sort of like managed to
- 9:40catch up to them with maybe 600 to go and then she was just too
- 9:43fast. I think she just closed.
- 9:45But you said she's just too quick.
- 9:47I've put in the in the show notes here because there's two
- 9:50British girls and Fitzgerald and Hannah Nuts all in 3rd and 4th.
- 9:54Dug up what the the UK national record was out of curiosity.
- 9:58So these two girls have run 832 and 833 and Paula Radcliffe
- 10:03still has it, believe it or not, from 2002.
- 10:07She's run 822 in 2002, which is just insanely fast.
- 10:12Like she was so good, wasn't she?
- 10:15Yeah. She ran like. 30 O1 as well.
- 10:18Hey, yeah. That in in as Fitzgerald, she
- 10:22she's really, really young, isn't she?
- 10:24Yeah, I don't. She might be.
- 10:26She's not his sister. But you know Jake Smith who who
- 10:29done London? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:31He I think he coaches her or something.
- 10:33He's always posting about her. She's 19.
- 10:37Wow. Because she ran cross country
- 10:40last year? European cross country.
- 10:41I think she could have won her ships there thereabouts.
- 10:44What in the under 20s? Yeah.
- 10:45Or maybe under May. Yeah, Under 20.
- 10:48Under 20, yeah. It was a men's 800 meters, of
- 10:52which Emmanuel Wang, Yang Yi, who we've spoken about a few
- 10:55Times Now. This year he won in 14195, which
- 11:00is a world lead. He ran away.
- 11:02Well, he didn't run away. Well, he did off the start line.
- 11:06He just hit the front and went with it the whole way.
- 11:08He beat Sajati in 142.27. So Surgiology is I think, an
- 11:16Olympic medallist. Like he's one of the best.
- 11:18Disney when it comes down to it. And Josh Howie, the American guy
- 11:21in 3rd. So he actually ran the third
- 11:24fastest USA time in that. We also had Bryce Hoppel, the
- 11:31other US athlete who we've referenced a couple of times.
- 11:35He had a bit of a stinker. He was once they hit 200, he was
- 11:38kind of pushed 200 to go. He was pushed to the back and
- 11:41then as you come around that bend 100 to 200 to go, he's just
- 11:46way out the back of it and he's ran 147.
- 11:49But it's almost to the point where you can just almost chalk
- 11:52it off because it's like that bad of a run.
- 11:54He's pretty much gave up or something's gone wrong.
- 11:57We had a men's 5K. Now.
- 11:59This was, I reckon, the the major talking point of the ninth
- 12:03because Andreas Omgren, the Swedish athlete in his home
- 12:07stadium in Stockholm, ran a European record taken away.
- 12:13We won't add any comments, but let's just leave it as Mocha
- 12:16tears European record, which if you know, you know, it sounds
- 12:21like it's been a long time coming that that was no longer
- 12:24his record for various reasons. So he's around 12:44 now.
- 12:28Did you see this? Yeah, yeah, I watched that part
- 12:32of the the because it had was the pole vaulter, the Swedish
- 12:38pole vaulter I. Forgot his name?
- 12:42Mondo Duplantis, he he was, he was jumping like was it before
- 12:47or after? But like the stadium, I think
- 12:49after Mondo jumped as well. And so you had this like the
- 12:53stadium was excited for this 5K. And then there was also they
- 12:57sort of knew that he was having like a world record attempt in
- 13:00the pole vault as well. So it was sort of just like they
- 13:03like crescendoed the mate really well.
- 13:05Like it was getting pretty excited.
- 13:07And I think with the pacing lights, that's what's been so
- 13:09good with distance running now as well as pacing lights.
- 13:12You can you get to it's like a, you know, in the swimming when
- 13:16they used to have the black line and you used to follow the world
- 13:18record line in the swimming like that was that's what the pacing
- 13:22lights are doing, particularly when they're setting them for
- 13:23like European records or national records.
- 13:26So it was good to watch because he was out by he just blew the
- 13:30field apart, didn't he? Yeah.
- 13:31What was it like the last mile or so?
- 13:33He just destroyed them and went solo.
- 13:35And as you say, like Mondo was jumping and the crowd were like
- 13:39kind of carrying this guy round lap on lap because he was just
- 13:42like, don't know the way they would use to describe it as
- 13:44robotic. Like his form is impeccable,
- 13:47isn't it? Yeah.
- 13:49He's glorious so much. What did he run like 401 or
- 13:52something for the last 1600 meters or something?
- 13:55It's like a 228 last Ki think. And you can see him starting to
- 13:58strain on his face, but like his version of looking strained.
- 14:03He looks so comfortable. It's just like a slight twinge.
- 14:08So what did he run? Was it 124445?
- 14:11What was the? Yeah, 44.
- 14:13Which was the second faster than that race a week or so ago,
- 14:16which which was won by I've got his name now the American Nico
- 14:23Young. And so they had a whole host of
- 14:26guys sub 250 where he said, I think he was the only one right.
- 14:30That was he was he was well clear.
- 14:32Kyle Robinson was Kyle Robinson was sub 13.
- 14:36But it it he, he looked a long way away, didn't he?
- 14:39Yeah, which is crazy, isn't it? Like, imagine he runs sub 13 at
- 14:43the front. It looks unbelievable.
- 14:45And then because you're 15 seconds behind the winner, it's
- 14:48almost like, oh, did you run sub 13?
- 14:51Did you? Yeah, but like this, Christ,
- 14:52what? 4th or 5th Australian ever, sub
- 14:5613. Yeah, and only a few seconds
- 14:58off, like I think the Australian record's 1255.
- 15:00So like his run in the context of Australian running history
- 15:04was remarkable, but I don't think he would have felt that
- 15:07when he was a 100 meters off the front.
- 15:09Yeah, I think that Australian record's been a long time
- 15:12coming, isn't it? And with the form that Kyle
- 15:14Robinson's in this year like, you wouldn't be surprised if it
- 15:17goes. It should be interesting
- 15:19actually with like the Aussies in terms of qualifying for world
- 15:23champs because you've got Kyle Robinson who's run the time and
- 15:28then you've got sort of Seth O'Donnell who potentially, you
- 15:30know, if he runs close to the standard, you would think you'd
- 15:34get some preference with selection given his national
- 15:39national champ. And then Rayner's run the
- 15:41standard. Remember he ran that indoors.
- 15:43And then Stewie Mcswain apparently is like he was in
- 15:46that last Diamond League. I think he ran 1315, but
- 15:48suddenly just getting fit again. So yeah, should be good.
- 15:52Santa Donald's gone Mia though, yeah.
- 15:54I don't know what's happened there.
- 15:57Few things on this one. How is Mulgateer his record
- 16:00still standing if he's got popped?
- 16:02Yeah, I know it must have been from pre.
- 16:05Yeah, but like, let's be real here, if he's doping, he just
- 16:10didn't pissed out like. I mean, if he's been found to be
- 16:14doping after the fact, that doesn't mean that, well, I mean
- 16:18if you put two and two together, he's ran a European record so
- 16:21he's hardly going to have done that whilst clean is he?
- 16:24I'm pretty sure as well, like when he ran, I remember him
- 16:27running it was like a London Diamond League or Birmingham and
- 16:31like it was pissing wet looked shithouse the weather and he ran
- 16:35away from everyone ran sub 13 like solo like in miserable
- 16:39weather. I don't know if that's when he
- 16:40ran 12:45 but like it was during COVID.
- 16:44Like he he had it from a while ago so it just still stands.
- 16:48But yeah. That isn't the annoying thing
- 16:50about these doping things, the way they come out like so long
- 16:53after, because I remember. So watching Mercatea during that
- 16:57time, like when he was in in form slashed open and because
- 17:01they're the ones like running really well at the time, like
- 17:04you kind of get behind them and you start to like them.
- 17:07So you're thinking now like, which guys am I watching and
- 17:10like rooting for? And they're eventually going to
- 17:12end up getting popped, or hopefully not, but it's annoying
- 17:15The. The gentleman we spoke about
- 17:18last week, that was fifth at Paris, the Kenyan athlete that
- 17:24just got done for doping with his biological passport.
- 17:27He he represents a like a professional team over in Japan,
- 17:33which was yeah, I know. So I'm assuming that will be
- 17:37terminated. And I don't know if perhaps he,
- 17:40I think maybe he'd spent some time in Kenya.
- 17:42So I don't know if it was during his time there that there's the
- 17:46irregularities. But yeah, I don't know it's you
- 17:49associate Japan with such like a clean history of yeah.
- 17:53So I doubt that. Yeah, I don't, I, I would
- 17:57imagine internally it would be not very well received at all
- 18:01the news. Yeah, that that guy loves to be
- 18:03careful. Otherwise, Matt Fox will be his
- 18:06next training partner. Oh my God there and that Mando
- 18:14Duplantis I looked up. Every time he breaks a world
- 18:17record he gets like 50,000 at least 50,000 thirty U.S.
- 18:20dollars. You see what he does?
- 18:23He's done it 12 times. Yeah, but do you see what he
- 18:25does? He he literally puts.
- 18:27It up. Yeah, and there's also, I don't
- 18:29know if the world records the difference between indoors and
- 18:32outdoors. Also might double up.
- 18:34Yeah, No, can't. Well, suppose the conditions are
- 18:37really there. Yeah.
- 18:38And you, I don't know if you have the same run UPS like I
- 18:40know in some of them, but yeah. How much more has he got in his
- 18:47locker now? Like in training he could be
- 18:48jumping 30 centimetres higher and he just knows he's got
- 18:51another 30 world records obviously.
- 18:54They read Somewhere in the Jump 34.
- 18:56Yeah, yeah. And so 28 wasn't it?
- 18:59I think you wanted to clear 28 I think on the last weekend
- 19:03that's. Crazy.
- 19:04It's genius though. Just clear it by a centimeter
- 19:06and then, yeah, go again when the time and the money's right.
- 19:10It doesn't really seem fair in a way.
- 19:13Like, that's the game, isn't it? You exploit the rules when the
- 19:16Yeah, that's yeah. Yeah, the last thing I wanted to
- 19:19mention from that 5K race, Carl Hocker was in there and he
- 19:23finished down in 7th and 1309, which I'm not going to say is an
- 19:27awful time, but you just know we would have been looking for
- 19:30quicker than that because he's he's already ran sub 13 and at
- 19:35the end of the indoor season this year in February.
- 19:37So and if you've seen him in Grand Slam, he hasn't really
- 19:42been that well, he's been competitive, but he's never been
- 19:45on the on the positive end of things.
- 19:47Like he hasn't really won any of these races against care against
- 19:51the Goose. And then he he just, he wasn't
- 19:54in this one. So I mean isn't need to peak
- 19:57until September. So we'll see.
- 19:59But. The Olympic hangover.
- 20:02Yeah, it is hard to like keep it up, like keep that level up,
- 20:07like you're going to fall off eventually.
- 20:08So hopefully it's just falling off now to pick it up in
- 20:11September. It's interesting like we, we
- 20:14talk about the sport like growing from a commercial point
- 20:17of view and like more media attention and stuff and then you
- 20:21don't actually realise the impact on the athletes.
- 20:23So on his YouTube channel I was watching one from would have
- 20:27been one of the grand Slams. And straight away after the race
- 20:31he has to go and do all his media obligations.
- 20:33And then he's like talks to the camera afterwards and says I was
- 20:37wanting to do a workout on the back of the race because he was
- 20:40racing at 8 or 15, whatever. And he was going to do a few
- 20:43reps afterwards. And he's like, but I've just
- 20:46spent an hour with the media now.
- 20:48I'm all cooled down. I've lost all my adrenaline.
- 20:50So like the, the media obligations have just ruined my
- 20:53workout essentially. And you don't realise that, do
- 20:56you? But it's part of the game, I
- 20:58guess. I've won.
- 20:59Well, not everyone has to deal with it really, because Kyle's
- 21:03the Olympic champ, so he'll be the most high in demand, I
- 21:06guess. But you're sort of paid for it
- 21:08as well. Like like that's his job.
- 21:10Like he has to. I heard this about the golf as
- 21:13well. This totally off topic, but I'm
- 21:15Rory McIlroy during that U.S. Open.
- 21:17He he like refused to like talk to the media for a day or two.
- 21:22And like that's basically like refusing like doing a part of
- 21:26your job, Like like it's part of the job.
- 21:28Like you have to do it. Like that's what you're becoming
- 21:30at Leafer. It's like being on the grid and
- 21:32refusing to talk to Martin Brundle.
- 21:34How dare then? Basically, yeah.
- 21:39Although I think sometimes using that analogy, like Max would
- 21:43just give a one word response you can blast through the media
- 21:47if you want to. I would imagine Jacob and some
- 21:49of those guys would navigate it in their favour when they need
- 21:52to basically just be horrible to be interviewed so that they
- 21:55could get on with their rehab. It's the same.
- 21:58Again, off topic, it's the same with most Salah.
- 22:01There's a Liverpool journalist who said Salah just walks
- 22:05through the the media zone every single time And then his
- 22:09contract was approaching expiring and he came out and
- 22:12just like said a few words alluded to the fact that he's
- 22:15unsure in his future. And they just know what they're
- 22:18doing because it just gets people talking and gets the ball
- 22:20rolling. But they can manipulate it for
- 22:23their advantage I guess as well currently anyway, more from last
- 22:27week. There was Portland Track
- 22:29Festival, which happened to think on the Sunday as well.
- 22:32So we'll just skim over this, but Donovan Brazer, who's a 2019
- 22:37world champ in the 800 meters, I think he's been out injured
- 22:40pretty much for six years since that.
- 22:43And the week before he ran first run back, he ran a 144.
- 22:49And I tune into a bit of the later on stuff as well.
- 22:52And they're American based. So like they, they have a big
- 22:55bias towards all the stuff that goes on in America and they were
- 22:58like losing the head saying like this is absolutely insane.
- 23:01It's like one of the best runs ever.
- 23:02Like what on earth is going on? Where's he come from?
- 23:06And then the week after a Portland track festival here,
- 23:09he's around a 143.81. So he's back in a big way.
- 23:14And that US 800 team, there's like 6 of them running 140
- 23:20threes and, and below. So when it comes to the
- 23:24nationals, where they're going to do the selections because US
- 23:27has done from nationals, isn't it, it's going to be
- 23:31unbelievable to follow. Yeah, I never heard of this lab
- 23:33before. His name popped up on the Cop
- 23:36Club podcast like, a couple of times, like, like ages ago.
- 23:39Olly Horror would like mass about our coaching and all this.
- 23:42And I wasn't interested in running back in 2019.
- 23:45Like, I had no idea that he was like, actually a world champion.
- 23:48And I used to have to come back after six years of being
- 23:51injured. Like it's crazy to run 143.
- 23:54Gives me a bit of hope. Six years got a while yet?
- 24:00Gee, here we go. What have you had out?
- 24:04Six weeks. Feels like 6 years let me tell
- 24:11you. I it it does on the other on the
- 24:13other side of the podcast line, I'm I'm well enough, but I don't
- 24:16know about you Owen. He's.
- 24:21Only because you can visually see what that six weeks has done
- 24:24to me. I didn't think you'd be fit to
- 24:27record when we started, but we're here we are.
- 24:32Getting through it, you're training for the, you're
- 24:33training for the beer mile. Yeah, you've been.
- 24:36It's fit. It's funny actually, I was
- 24:39speaking to one of my mates back in Perth, but a Scottish lad and
- 24:43he's all into like his health and fitness but he doesn't run.
- 24:46And he obviously knows that I am in as well from a running
- 24:49perspective. And I was like, oh, it's just
- 24:51like, it's fun catching up with people, but like, just just
- 24:54ruins you. And he's like, oh, yeah, you're
- 24:56not much fit, lad, though you can't keep up with your mates
- 24:59Like, well, quite literally. Yeah.
- 25:00That's a good analogy. Not much fit from a different
- 25:03perspective. Relentless anyway.
- 25:08Jess Hull won in the women's 800 as well in a 158.69.
- 25:13So I think it's so impressive the way she keeps dipping her
- 25:16toe into these eight hundreds and she's right at the front and
- 25:20competing in them. Like I always considered they're
- 25:22just solely a 1500m runner. Never knew she had the wheels to
- 25:25run an ace. But these times are like they're
- 25:28up there, aren't they? But like this was after around
- 25:32soundtrack was cancelled so she probably was training for the
- 25:35800 so she just had to find any at all to just race still.
- 25:39Yeah, 158. From the front as well.
- 25:41Like that was hers moving on into the week on, I think it was
- 25:47European time is Tuesday night. There's a Meath.
- 25:50I don't know if this name rings any bells.
- 25:52Dean, you have a bit more of a historical understanding than US
- 25:56parvo Naomi Games. He must have been a Finnish
- 25:59athlete from back in the day. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:02One of the top Finnish athletes, I don't want to throw the Fins
- 26:05under the bus, but were they like there was A and do you
- 26:09remember we spoke about some of the Finnish gold medalists from
- 26:11light distance athletes from from their time, I don't know if
- 26:14they were like early on blood doping or, or what, but they
- 26:18during their time were the yeah, there was a, there was a few of
- 26:21them that were ahead of the pack.
- 26:26You know what would be interesting?
- 26:27A little bit of spin off if sometimes we like dance around
- 26:32things like that, we mention it, but like we haven't got the deep
- 26:36understanding to like go into it fully.
- 26:38If we don't like a little deep dive on some of these, like
- 26:40random things like that finish scene from back in the day,
- 26:46explore whether it was dope and or whether they're legit.
- 26:49Yeah, and don't fear, at that time things like that weren't
- 26:52illegal either. Yeah, troops they were.
- 26:54Just a different time. Pushing it as hard as they
- 26:56could. Yeah, really.
- 26:58Anyway, at this meet in Finland, in a place called Turku TURKU,
- 27:04there was a men's 1500 metres won by an Ethiopian athlete,
- 27:08Gamma in 333.49, which if you consider some of the other 1500s
- 27:15that have been going on recently, that's not actually
- 27:17that fast. I think the guy who's won the
- 27:20Gamma has just ran the standard by 100th of a second because I
- 27:25think it's 333.5. And then second was Nordas, the
- 27:30Norwegian athlete. So him, Cattle, Carl Doyle, the
- 27:35Irish guy and Andrew Cosgren are the names which are jumping out
- 27:41to me from this result sheath. So are you surprised by the fact
- 27:46that Kyle Doyle is beating Andrew Koshkin hero?
- 27:49I am like I am Andrew sort of been doing some longer stuff.
- 27:53So he's he's like doubled in a few 5 KS recently.
- 27:57So I don't know if his like focus is switching like he's run
- 28:01I think 1311 or 10 in the 5K. So I do think that's where like
- 28:09he'll eventually go like he could, that could be his like
- 28:12best event. And and again, he's probably
- 28:15just trying to get strong. Like he doesn't need to be
- 28:16peaking until September. So I'd say that was just a a
- 28:21nice little head out for him. But Kyle Doyle, man, he's
- 28:24running well. And yeah, he's one to watch
- 28:27over. And if we glance our eyes all
- 28:29the way down the results to 13th was a guy, Tom Keane, British
- 28:33athlete, he was when I told the Jake Whiteman story the other
- 28:38week. He's Whiteman's training
- 28:40partner. He was over in Melbourne with
- 28:41him, Big Liverpool fan Tom, so good luck.
- 28:46That Vatican 8, Adrian Ben, he's the 800 meter guy.
- 28:51He runs the 800. So for him to run 336, like, to
- 28:55be honest, it's a slow race. You'd expect him to like kick
- 28:57them all. But yeah, it's just interesting
- 29:00that he's stepping up as well. Look at the Gandhi.
- 29:04Just for context, that Paavo Nurmi won nine golds, 3 silvers
- 29:08at the Olympics. So could move back in the days,
- 29:12back in the 1920s. But just for context.
- 29:14So we don't before someone writes in and we've not.
- 29:19So yeah, quite the champion of his era.
- 29:22Oh wow, how's that? Like he's won nine golds and
- 29:25we're sat here talking about like a games named after him and
- 29:28we don't even know who he is. Yeah.
- 29:30Time Born in 1897, he was ancient.
- 29:35Look at the guy in 5th Sheppo Sheis.
- 29:38He's literally called Sheis. It's actually Tashite, he said.
- 29:42Yeah, that's what he'd say. Anyway, it was a men's 5K which
- 29:48was won by a Belgian guy, John Hayman's in 13 O3.
- 29:53So again, these have just missed the standard here.
- 29:55You'd imagine that they were going for it coming so close,
- 29:58but looking at the field potentially there's not really
- 30:02the same calibre that there has been in some of these Diamond
- 30:04League 5 KS. What was what stood out to me
- 30:07here was, remember when we'd done the episode where Brett and
- 30:12Izzy done the great Manchester 5K and we're talking about the
- 30:16Uruguayan athlete who was there? This guy's in this field as
- 30:20well, Santiago Katrov. And then I also noticed him.
- 30:23He was on the start line of the Paris Diamond League.
- 30:26So I mean, it could be bloody Nekharbado, but he's clearly got
- 30:30a good agent who's getting them into these races.
- 30:34So in that race was Hemrick Inger, Britsen Inger Bricks.
- 30:38Jesus Christ, I can never say it.
- 30:39Someone say it. Inger Britain.
- 30:42Inger, Britain. So I was surprised to see his
- 30:46name on one of these like top races still because I don't
- 30:50think he's raced for a while, or if he has I've missed it, but
- 30:52he's still running 1320. That's crazy.
- 30:56The chap as what's his hamstrings is it that he's
- 30:59issues with? I think something like that.
- 31:01But to be able to just whip out 1320 is yeah.
- 31:05Especially when you see the James West and Rory Leonard, who
- 31:09are two of the top British distance runners at the minute,
- 31:13they're further down the results running 1327 and 1313.
- 31:17And when you isolate them from a British perspective, like
- 31:21they're two of our best guys and Hamrick just comes from nowhere
- 31:26and runs 1320, it's like, wow, there's just levels to it.
- 31:30Like you try and blame the weather, but like for your man
- 31:34John Hayman's to run 13 O3, you can't even blame the weather
- 31:38because that's like pretty fast. Like the 1500 was like the
- 31:42shorter distance would get away. You like the weather doesn't
- 31:45have to be perfect for like 1500, but for a 5K you'd really
- 31:48feel it if the weather was was bad.
- 31:50So yeah, I don't know. James W Royal Leonard.
- 31:53Maybe it's travel to Finland. How long is the flight to
- 31:55Finland from the Uki? Do not need 2 hours but.
- 31:59Yeah. But it's not probably quite hard
- 32:03to get there. Where'd you go?
- 32:04Helsinki I guess. Yeah, they're only, they're only
- 32:09opening up their season then to UK wise.
- 32:11So I don't think that. Was true there was a women's
- 32:141500 what stood out here was there's two British girls in
- 32:19second and third behind the Canadian so Gabriella debuts
- 32:23Stafford one in a 402 and the two British girls reve Walcott
- 32:29Nolan and Aaron Wallace was second and third in 402 and 403
- 32:34which they've just missed the qualifier for worlds.
- 32:37I think it's a 4/01 for the women but just thought it's
- 32:42worthwhile mentioning because no doubt they're going to be having
- 32:45a few more stabs at that standard and may well end up
- 32:48making part of the team next set of results.
- 32:50I think this was either Wednesday or Thursday nights.
- 32:54There's a meet titled the BMC Record Breaker.
- 32:57So for those who don't know, BMC stands for British Milers Club.
- 33:02They're essentially the highest level track meets you're going
- 33:06to get on the UK racing circuit and the same entry standards
- 33:11which you need to meet some race at a BMC essentially.
- 33:15So this was down at the same Mo Farah athletics track which is
- 33:19part of Saint Mary's University. So for any athletes in the UK
- 33:25who are looking to go to university and want to pursue
- 33:28running, there's essentially 2 which they'll choose from ones
- 33:33Loughborough or Loughborough, potentially the most popular.
- 33:36And then second is Saint Mary's. The good thing about Saint
- 33:39Mary's is it's based down in London, whereas Loughborough's
- 33:43kind of in the middle of nowhere.
- 33:46And this is also where our boys from front runner, the Toms,
- 33:50Kieran and Adam Well and obviously Greenie, they've done
- 33:54a few sessions down at Saint Mary's since being over there
- 33:57and they were actually racing there this night.
- 33:59So we'll get get to the results. There's a men's 800 meters which
- 34:04was won in 146 as you don't know who the guy was who won it, but
- 34:09Callum Elson, who we've spoken about, you know, the distance
- 34:13project on YouTube, he was last in a 149, but I don't really
- 34:18think 800 meters is his thing, is it?
- 34:20So this must have just been purely like a not training run
- 34:23but just getting the stimulus from running fast essentially.
- 34:27Yeah, he did. He win, was he?
- 34:29He won a medal at the the one and only time the World Rd. mile
- 34:34champs were run, so he's more of like a Miller than a 800 meter
- 34:38guy. Yeah, and then even from the
- 34:40mile, I think he'd scale up rather than scale down.
- 34:43So yeah, this, this wasn't his, wasn't his do, but he's in the
- 34:48in the B race. Tom Moorcroft from Front Runner
- 34:51ran A1 4803 so then if you think if you think about the a race,
- 34:57Callum Nelson was last in the 149.
- 34:59He could have beaten Callum Nelson in that A race, which
- 35:01would have been pretty cool for Tom.
- 35:03But that's a PB forum and also a club record.
- 35:06So glad to see Tom doing big things over in Europe there in
- 35:10the men's 1500. I sent this through two years
- 35:13early in the week the nines because I told you that the
- 35:16front runner guys are at this meet and the the poster boy for
- 35:21it, quite literally on the image is the guy I've mentioned before
- 35:24who kind of first got me into running and 1st done my training
- 35:28plan. Joe Wigfield, because he's he's
- 35:29from Wallasey here where I live and he's kind of been on the
- 35:34cusp for a while, but not quite close enough.
- 35:38And he's ran a 336 from 50 metres off off the front.
- 35:43Like there's loads of videos and he's just tearing it up the home
- 35:46straight like no one's even with him.
- 35:48So this is a big step forward for him.
- 35:51Like he's he's closing the gap. And the reason why I sent it
- 35:54through two years was because I've seen the start list and
- 35:58Scott Beatty, who is one of the guys from Macau who we've done
- 36:02the YouTube Diaries on before. So the the Hoker group, that
- 36:06Rory Leonard, the Callum Nelson that Scott Beatty is a part of,
- 36:12he was also in the field and I said Joe Wigfield's running
- 36:16against this guy here and yeah, he's beating him.
- 36:19Scott Beatty was back in fifth. There's also an Irish guy in the
- 36:22field. I have no idea how to.
- 36:25If I thought I couldn't pronounce cattle, how on earth
- 36:28to pronounce look? Please try.
- 36:31OK, Louis. Louis.
- 36:38It's in Irish though. So for context for the
- 36:41listeners, Louis, as Owen says, is spelled LUGHAIDH.
- 36:53No, I think, I think it's Louis, but I'm 99% sure that's Louis.
- 36:57Yeah. Oscar Elga in Irish.
- 36:59That's so funny. I've done on your.
- 37:05Yeah, I don't know who he is. Then where are these next?
- 37:09Oh, this Paris Diamond League now isn't it?
- 37:11Yeah, yeah. He had the women's 1500 was won
- 37:16by Nelly chapter chair. So she is she's very
- 37:19distinguishable. If you've seen her, she's like
- 37:21quite tall and skinny and she kind of stands out.
- 37:24But Jesus Christ, she puts the rest of these to the sword.
- 37:27Like you can tell that she's the dominant player here because
- 37:30kind of like it's her race, her race to lose, which she almost
- 37:34did. Sarah Healey was closing like a
- 37:36train. So Sarah is the Irish girl we've
- 37:39spoken about quite a bit because she's been in incredible form.
- 37:42And yeah, she was eating up the yards.
- 37:44She tried to go down the inside. And if it wasn't for this
- 37:49chapter chair shutting the door, Sarah had the momentum and I
- 37:52think she would have run past her.
- 37:53So they've they both ran 357, which is just like moving Lyndon
- 37:59Hall was back and forth, Georgia Hunter Bell in 6th and then
- 38:03there was a couple more Brits and Aussies in the field.
- 38:06So we had Gemma Ricky, who is also part, I think she's part of
- 38:10that M11 training group part Keeley Hodgkinson's thing and
- 38:15Georgia Griffith back in 13th in a four O 1, which kind of shows
- 38:19the depth of this race. Like that's still very fast.
- 38:23And Abby Caldwell was 16th with four O 7.
- 38:27So not her best race. We had a men's 800 meters won by
- 38:31a Spanish guy, Mohammed Atui in a 142.73.
- 38:36So like these, this 800 is starting to brew now.
- 38:39Like there's been a lot of talk over the past few years that
- 38:42they're going to run a world whack up world record because I
- 38:46think the the men's 800 record is one of the current long
- 38:49standing ones, which hasn't been round in the past five years or
- 38:52so. And they've been dancing round
- 38:54it, so there's 5-6 guys who potentially could do it, and you
- 38:59don't know who it's going to go to, but you kind of feel like
- 39:02it's just a matter of time before someone does it.
- 39:05There's Josh Howie and Bryce Hoppel, the two American guys
- 39:08who we spoke about from Stockholm last week in second
- 39:11and third in a 143 dead and a 14311.
- 39:15The British guy Max Burgeon, who we said open this season in a
- 39:20143 the other week, also run the 143 here and Irish boy Mark
- 39:26English in 6th also with a 143.98.
- 39:29When was this on? This was Friday night.
- 39:33OK. So good being being in Europe
- 39:37whilst these are on from a spectator point of view.
- 39:39Like I literally come in. Didn't even, well I knew it was
- 39:43on but I'd forgotten. Puts on the TV and it's on.
- 39:47It's on BBC like even if you don't have a don't pay for a
- 39:50streaming or a package, it's free to air and then because we
- 39:54have sky, I don't know if it's just standard.
- 39:57If you put it on halfway through, you can press restart
- 40:02like watch from the beginning. So I missed like the first 40
- 40:06minutes and then just restarted it like live whilst it's on and
- 40:09then you can just skip through just.
- 40:11Skip through. Yeah, it's on around so that the
- 40:14Finland meet was on the Tuesday and this is on the Friday.
- 40:18Yeah, that's just for context for like the next 5K results
- 40:21because some of the boys run faster.
- 40:24Go on. Then you mean Stockholm or?
- 40:28When did that Uruguayan guy run? He ran in Finland, was it?
- 40:32Oh yeah, he was at that. Pablo Naomi games.
- 40:36Yeah, right. Not the not the Swedish Diamond
- 40:39League. No.
- 40:40And now at the Paris Diamond League, he's after coming 10th
- 40:44in 1259, which is an area record.
- 40:48So what did he run a couple of days before that?
- 40:51And he ran thirteen O 8. So it's crazy what a few days
- 40:55can do. Backed up within 72 hours and
- 41:00ran a South American record sub 13.
- 41:03That's mad. How can you?
- 41:04Because clearly if he's if he's run South American record there
- 41:09in 1259, thirteen O 8, he's absolutely on the limit, isn't
- 41:12he? He's probably gone for it there
- 41:15and how, how can you recover that quick to then do it again?
- 41:18That's what I don't get. Like he he's definitely carrying
- 41:20some fatigue and he's definitely running in the days in between.
- 41:25Like, I don't, yeah, that's crazy.
- 41:28But anyway that race was won by Yarmouth Kabjalcha in 1247 and
- 41:35then Belou Branu from where's that Brani that country is it
- 41:41Bahrain? Bahrain.
- 41:44He ran 1248 for an area record and Graham Blanks was 1249 and
- 41:513rd Jimmy Grezier from France he was fourth in 1251 which was a
- 41:58national record. He seems to be breaking a record
- 42:00every time he runs a 5K. He's a starboy is me for France.
- 42:04Although. You see in the results 3 French
- 42:07guys under 13 minutes. Shit, yeah.
- 42:09Come here. Is that Al Bakali?
- 42:11Yeah, yeah, he's in there. Wow, looks like a giraffe in
- 42:15there. He is a big boy, yeah.
- 42:18He's huge. That's.
- 42:19Why more of a giraffe? Him or Kajelcha?
- 42:21Nah, like him, he he makes kajelcha look like he's like
- 42:25elegant, Yeah, like he's a Ethiopian, but well, sorry, he's
- 42:30an Ethiopian, but you know, like healing Gabra Selesi or someone.
- 42:35But yeah, they they got gapped early, like like everyone got
- 42:39strung out pretty fast. But this race was because a lot
- 42:41of those guys. Speaking of backing up, we
- 42:44covered them Owen last week. A lot of those guys when when
- 42:49they won, when the winner was in 1245, like they all raced the
- 42:53what was the what was the Diamond League before Stockholm?
- 42:57Was low. Was.
- 42:58Low, yes. They were all in Norway racing
- 43:01that 5K then, and then they haven't had that short of backup
- 43:04as that Harvard Nurmi Games athlete.
- 43:07But yeah, they did back up, but they went out.
- 43:10They were more aggressive, though.
- 43:11I think the pace lights were more aggressive and Jude Thomas
- 43:15was pacing it. I think they went.
- 43:18Through fast didn't. He yeah, they went through 3K in
- 43:22was it like 737? I think, yeah, yeah, seven
- 43:2436737, which is like, whereas I think the other day when they
- 43:29went through, they went through in like 742.
- 43:32And then not only did they go through fast, then Kajelcha ran
- 43:37to like he ran like a 59 high. I think for like as soon as the
- 43:42pacemakers dropped off, he like, and I think that's where he's at
- 43:45his best because you know how he sort of didn't feature in that
- 43:47other race where they sort of kicked it down over the top of
- 43:49him. Whereas he can like suffer.
- 43:51He like ran everyone into the red and then basically faded.
- 43:56Like he ran a 64 second second last lap.
- 43:58And I don't know what he ran for his last lap, but it wasn't that
- 44:00fast. But he's just so strong, like he
- 44:03was just able to like suffer in that part where and just gap.
- 44:07He just gapped everyone and then no one could run over the top of
- 44:09him. Yeah, he's a he's a risk taker,
- 44:11isn't he? He he ran a few laps in the
- 44:14middle when he was gapping them like 59 sixties and then maybe
- 44:18the 12 to 800 meter to go lap was a 64 and you're like, oh
- 44:23shit, he's he's going and then you're just watching them come
- 44:26back on him, aren't you? Like the 100 meter gap became a
- 44:30had no coming up at home straight like Danny needed
- 44:33another 50 meters or so and and the guy in second with the
- 44:36runner on top of him. But like he's judged it well.
- 44:39He knows what he's doing. And it was just it's cool to see
- 44:42himself put him on the line like that and know that it's going to
- 44:45be tough and maybe the end isn't going to be pretty.
- 44:47But he was going for the record, I think at the end of the day,
- 44:50wasn't he? And it just wasn't wasn't quite
- 44:52there, but he's came away with the win.
- 44:55Another interesting storyline within that is the 2 American
- 44:59guys, Green Blanks and Nico Young.
- 45:01They're having a bit of a tussle to see who's kind of like the
- 45:05the main, the main guy for them. So Nico Young ran the American
- 45:10record last week and that meet that you're referring to and
- 45:15Green Blanks has came back and beaten them here.
- 45:16So that's one to watch as their season goes on and they come
- 45:20into the US champs. Do you guys ever watch the US
- 45:24trials ahead of a major championship?
- 45:27So much drama. It's like it's almost better
- 45:31than some of the like, championship racing I reckon.
- 45:34Because you just, we're not exposed to it fully.
- 45:36But you just know there's like so much politics as well going
- 45:39on. Yeah.
- 45:40But then they cut through that because then they just select
- 45:42top three, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 45:44Which is why I think MU ended up missing out on the last
- 45:48Olympics, isn't it? Yeah, like if there was a status
- 45:52element to it or like whatever, she'd obviously be on the list.
- 45:56But she didn't finish top three. She wasn't there.
- 45:59It was a men's 1500 meters as well, which like these, how
- 46:04quick and fast are these races becoming and frequent?
- 46:08So this one was born by Azerine Habs, French athlete, home
- 46:12Diamond League in Paris. Like the crowd carried them to
- 46:16this. I mean, he ran it himself, but
- 46:19he had so much support from the home crowd.
- 46:21He's ran a 327.49, which is a world lead and is, yeah, I was
- 46:28going to say one of the fastest times I've seen for a while, but
- 46:30obviously because it's a world lead.
- 46:32What's that all time? Yeah, that's.
- 46:36Great that we're talking about it on Let's Run afterwards span.
- 46:39Like should he be listed after because it's like Elgar Rouge.
- 46:43I don't know if it's like Morseli.
- 46:46Oh, who's the Kenyan, the tall aspell Kiprop?
- 46:49Is it aspell Kiprop who who got dumb for doping?
- 46:52But he he ran something ridiculous in Monaco one year
- 46:56prior to then. But yeah, and then it's then
- 46:59it's this performance and now talking about it, the Let's Run
- 47:02chat sort of dominated. It was dominated by this French
- 47:08athlete. And was it there's an 18 year
- 47:10old Kenyan that was second or thirds from 3:27?
- 47:14I, I literally had to like, like, look more at this because
- 47:19his name's Koech Fanuel Kipsogi. It's his second recording, 1500.
- 47:253/27/72 for a World under 20 record.
- 47:29Yeah, it. Is crazy second.
- 47:31Ever recorded 1500? That's man.
- 47:34Yeah. So I don't know this that was
- 47:35going to be the double trouble. It's sort of like, I don't know,
- 47:38how do you know what to get excited about in terms of, I
- 47:42don't know, do you get a bit skeptical with some of these
- 47:45results if you don't know the story?
- 47:47Yeah, you do 100%. It's the same with them.
- 47:53You can't, you can't. You gotta be careful for own
- 47:55shade, haven't you? But like this Habs, he's having
- 47:57an unbelievable year. And I mean, he's obviously been
- 48:00a good athlete prior to this. But then you you look at like
- 48:04that Mokatea storyline that just it reads a little bit similar,
- 48:08but. Yeah.
- 48:09And particularly as you're, Oh yeah, I don't know one.
- 48:12Yeah, it's making, making large improvements, particularly as
- 48:16the you get pointer and pointer, it becomes less likely.
- 48:20And then you would think as you get older in your career, it
- 48:23would be hard physiologically harder.
- 48:25Like you don't have your age, your body's aging.
- 48:28I mean, that being said, it's funny, right.
- 48:30So we don't say the same thing for Blanks or George Mills
- 48:36performances. You know, we don't have the same
- 48:38skepticism. But I think when you're familiar
- 48:40with their storyline, you see how much work they're putting in
- 48:43and you can follow, particularly the ones that have the channels
- 48:45and stuff. You sort of like George Mills's
- 48:48two performances, sort of he's been threatening to do that for
- 48:51a while, I reckon. And so you sort of like, oh,
- 48:54that, that all makes sense. Whereas it's the ones that you
- 48:56sort of completely unfamiliar with for various reasons that
- 49:00where it's like, oh, I don't know.
- 49:02Seen George Mills's interview afterwards and it's it's pretty
- 49:06cool. Like the guy says to him how
- 49:09much he happened to sacrifice to, to do this and deliver these
- 49:13performances. And he's like, mate, it's not
- 49:16sacrifice. I love it.
- 49:18This is like what I'm here to do.
- 49:20And it's just like, yeah, fair play.
- 49:22That is the right answer. Like and that's really better
- 49:26place #1 was habs #2 was that 18 year old Kenyan and then three
- 49:31was George Mills in three 2836, which is like for a 5K guy to be
- 49:37able to run a 328 is just again not.
- 49:41So that's on the back of Snatch and Moe's 5K record last week,
- 49:45isn't it? Yeah.
- 49:46And that 328 that he's run there him as the fastest ever Brit
- 49:52besides Josh Kerr. So he's he's also now run faster
- 49:55than I mean, not the Farrow was a 1500m runner, but second
- 49:59fastest ever here as well. So I think he's going to be in
- 50:02with a shout when it gets to Tokyo.
- 50:04If he can continue building on this, it's going to be so good.
- 50:08Like you've got Jacob to come back into all of this as well.
- 50:11Like what do these races look like?
- 50:13If he's in it? It's just, it's mental.
- 50:16Like the little thing I'm taking from this is I think we need a
- 50:19race more frequently. Like especially like contract
- 50:23season. Like these boys are banging out
- 50:26like 5K twice a week. And fair enough one might go
- 50:29shit, but one of them is going really, really well.
- 50:34So it's nearly worth the gamble to just book in for a load of
- 50:37races and just try and nail. At least you might nail one or
- 50:41two of them. Need to need to get on the
- 50:43bicarb I think. Yeah, I'm looking actually, now
- 50:45that I'm here, back in Europe, there's a cheaper bicarb from
- 50:50what's it called? I think it is called bicarb.
- 50:52It's this. Yeah, little English company.
- 50:55Yeah, I've heard that you might we might be able to get it
- 50:57because I think the one that the Morton products not been like
- 51:01cleared for purchase here, but I've heard that there might be
- 51:04another, it might be that that we can buy here.
- 51:07So I need to look into that. It's more reasonably priced as
- 51:11well. Yeah, the Morton's like, I can't
- 51:13remember how much per use, but it's a lot.
- 51:15I think it's 70, €70 for four. That's crazy.
- 51:20So put that Aussie dollar and you're paying a lot of money,
- 51:23yeah. I thought that buying a couple
- 51:25of gels for a session was expensive but shit.
- 51:28Best not turn to track and get on the bicarb then.
- 51:32I've hopefully a 3K in the next couple of weeks so I might buy.
- 51:38Am I trying to buy some of that bike app for it?
- 51:41Did you run a 3K in Perth? Never.
- 51:43I've never run. I ran a 3K in like 2019 and I
- 51:49ran like 859. So technically that's my that's
- 51:54my PV. So you would have gone quicker
- 51:58through your 5K right? Yeah, I think I ran through 8845
- 52:03in the 5K. So yeah, it's exciting.
- 52:08Thankfully that rounds off the results.
- 52:10Jeez, that was a. Big Oh wait, there's one more,
- 52:12one more. There's a race in Ireland.
- 52:15There was a local well near me. There's a Dun Chocolate 10K and
- 52:19it's one of the like a main, one of the main like 10K road races
- 52:22in Ireland. And that was won in 2930 by
- 52:28David Mcglin from Waterford AC Second was Tige Donnelly in 2937
- 52:34and third was Hugh Armstrong in 30 O 1.
- 52:38So for use they don't know. Ireland went through a heat wave
- 52:41over the last couple of days and it was actually it was crazy
- 52:46warm. It was like 26°.
- 52:49Whoa. Yeah no it was warm and it was
- 52:53humid like yesterday. For my 2 sessions I don't want
- 52:56in a singlet and the other one topless.
- 52:59I was like, what? Both yeah, so that's good
- 53:03running from them lads. But yeah, that's.
- 53:06No, Owen, I heard on the news, sorry.
- 53:09I heard about the heat wave thing.
- 53:10Well, obviously I felt it, but they, they said on the news, the
- 53:14definition of heat wave is 3 consecutive days being over a
- 53:20certain threshold temperature. And I was laughing to myself
- 53:23thinking about that temperature's like 20° or
- 53:26something. I'm just looking now.
- 53:28It's probably 18. It varies per region, which is
- 53:32mad. So like typically I don't know
- 53:34how it works in Ireland. Where's the Where's the hottest
- 53:36place? I think it's Wexford which is
- 53:41below like an hour to blow Dublin.
- 53:44Yeah. So it's hotter down South.
- 53:46It's always hotter in London than it is up by me a couple of
- 53:50degrees. So, yeah, but there's another,
- 53:54there's a National Five Mile in Ireland next week, next Sunday.
- 53:58So I don't know if we'll get to because we record on the Sunday
- 54:02morning that will race will be happening when we are recording.
- 54:05Maybe we'll we can do a recording Sunday evening and
- 54:10we'll just slip. I'll slip it into the episode.
- 54:12We'll be covering, yeah. Yeah, like them boys.
- 54:15Tell us about your training, Dean.
- 54:17Do you want to go first? Now you can.
- 54:18I always go first. Right.
- 54:21Oh boys, just a quick one. Hans Strava, Mr. Ranch, Jake
- 54:25Barclough on the 20th of June, right?
- 54:30He just done a little was an 8K run.
- 54:33And if you look at the comments, this Andy Wright guy, he's after
- 54:38putting in a full like rap song into the comments.
- 54:45No, I swear on my life. It's like yo, rant to Japan.
- 54:50The the only, the one and only man's lat, slow, never slow,
- 54:54scrap in the park every stride, yo boom, guys.
- 54:58And this is so long. I serve it like give it a look.
- 55:02Rant to Japan. Fans are freaking nuts.
- 55:06What do they call the Ranch to Japan Army?
- 55:08Yeah, in the last couple of weeks he is just like explode.
- 55:13I don't know, it's crazy, but give that a look on the 20th.
- 55:17Of as has, he replied. He has replied.
- 55:20This is special. I have no words.
- 55:24I've got my SO I'm sorry. Surely it's after the the hotel,
- 55:30the hospital incident with the Yeah, but that made it that goes
- 55:36beyond running. I was talking with my cousin
- 55:38who's recent, more recently got into running and we were both
- 55:40talking about that video. Like, I think it goes beyond
- 55:44just running, you know, transcends running that sort of
- 55:49content. Did you see by the way, he on
- 55:53the back of those medical bills and stuff?
- 55:55Well, he just like mentioned that it was so expensive and
- 55:58he's been weighed in by subscribers.
- 56:01They've all started donating. Yeah.
- 56:03Yeah, and we, we were chatting about how how we stopped
- 56:07covering our own cost to this podcast.
- 56:10Maybe that's all we need to do, just complain about it a little
- 56:13bit. Get anonymous donations.
- 56:18Right. Anyway, my training week, Monday
- 56:22I done 60 minutes in the morning, followed by a few hill
- 56:27strides and then in the morning. In the evening, sorry I just
- 56:31done 30 minutes like really easy.
- 56:33It was my first like running easy double in a long long time.
- 56:39Tuesday I had double threshold so the morning session was at 2
- 56:45by 15 minutes with a 5 minute flow in between and then in the
- 56:51evening I had 4 by 5 minutes. This evening session it was like
- 56:58the start of the heat wave so and I didn't I wasn't expecting
- 57:03it. I wasn't expecting it was just
- 57:04really clammy and warm 20. Six degree heat wave I Yeah, no.
- 57:10This wouldn't have actually been this have been like 21. 22 or
- 57:13something, yeah. But yeah, I struggled big time.
- 57:17I think I've lost all of my. You literally can't take it
- 57:21seriously. It's hot over.
- 57:22Everything you know, one, it's different.
- 57:26No, it's different. I swear I feel like like
- 57:29yesterday 26° is the equivalent of like 45 in Perth.
- 57:34It's just for the two times like 2 * a year.
- 57:37You don't train in perfect weather, but yeah.
- 57:40Basically it was. One are you, Owen?
- 57:45Pardon. Do you get much wind?
- 57:47Yeah, that certain loops you do get hit with wind and that loop
- 57:52there was was a pretty. Wind.
- 57:55Yes, so basically the heat, the wind, there might have been a
- 57:59few hills on the loop. I was doing as well.
- 58:01So they're all the reasons I'm giving for it's sort of annoying
- 58:08and I don't know, you just said so used to like rattling off
- 58:12like B plus sessions when you have a bad one.
- 58:15It sort of dwells, sort of dwells on you.
- 58:18I don't know, you're like, oh shit, I'm not in the shape I
- 58:20thought I was in and all this, but you sort of just have to
- 58:23like forget about it. It's like, did you did you?
- 58:26No, I didn't. No, no, I didn't.
- 58:29No. Did you bet you just knew that
- 58:31it was harder because your heart rate was and pace?
- 58:34And the pace is like my legs were just dead.
- 58:36Like this is the last hard week in a four week block basically.
- 58:42So like I've been slowly increasing, increasing,
- 58:44increasing. So this is the hardest week and
- 58:48then I'll drop down to recover. So in my head I'm just like, get
- 58:51through this week. I'm tired legs, and I can
- 58:53recover next week. And in terms of workouts, like
- 58:56when have you ever done, because this will be 4 workouts per
- 59:00week, right? Yeah.
- 59:01And have you ever done 4 workouts per week?
- 59:04No, it's only two or in Australia, I don't actually 3:00
- 59:07every second week. So no, this is, yeah, the most
- 59:10I've been doing. Yeah.
- 59:12So that was Tuesday. Wednesday in the morning, I done
- 59:1760 minutes. And yeah, I was struggling at
- 59:20this one. I literally just dragging myself
- 59:23around. And then in the evening I do a
- 59:26circuits class. So I done circuits class
- 59:29Thursday. I done 70 minutes in the morning
- 59:33my legs are starting to come around at the end of this run
- 59:36and then I do weight training in the evening so lifting a little
- 59:41bit heavier and Friday was total rest didn't do anything Saturday
- 59:47I had so this is yesterday. I don't 5 by 5 minutes so got
- 59:53out early to try and avoid the heat force.
- 59:55No I'm still feeling good. I feel like because my.
- 1:00:01Session or on a Tuesday and a Saturday, like I've got
- 1:00:04Wednesday, Thursday and I'm totally off on a Friday.
- 1:00:07It's like I've come back around like I'm recovered by the
- 1:00:09Saturday. So that felt good.
- 1:00:12And then I done 8 by 4 minutes off, one minute recovery in the
- 1:00:18evening. So that was a big enough day.
- 1:00:20And then today I've got 90 minutes and after 45 minutes I
- 1:00:26can like pick it up for 10 minutes and then like come back
- 1:00:29down. So I'll pick it up to like my
- 1:00:32like my LT1 pace for 10 minutes and I'll bring it back down.
- 1:00:37But all up that will be nearly 130 kilometres for the week and
- 1:00:43the plan now, next week I'll have a down.
- 1:00:47Walk in last night. Yeah.
- 1:00:53So next week down week. So that's going to be my
- 1:00:55structure for the foreseeable like 3 hard weeks and then I'll
- 1:01:00recover it because I my body needs that recovery week just to
- 1:01:05download week. And like I'll still probably
- 1:01:07cover probably 80 to 90 kilometers.
- 1:01:10It's just like all of like one session a day and and just try
- 1:01:14and let the body absorb the training.
- 1:01:16Ideally I'd like to race on that week as well, just like see what
- 1:01:20the training's been doing. So yeah, I'll see what happens.
- 1:01:24But yeah, I'm going in the right direction.
- 1:01:27SO3 decent weeks under my belt. So yeah, I'll see what happens.
- 1:01:31And enjoying the to work like the double threshold, like just
- 1:01:35enjoying the day, like when you're doing that, not feeling
- 1:01:37like work and life's too too difficult.
- 1:01:40No, no, yeah, I've gotten into a nice routine now.
- 1:01:43Just it's hard in the, I feel like in Australia people go to
- 1:01:46bed earlier and whereas in Ireland people like, I don't
- 1:01:50know if it's just me and people like see up to like 10 or 11,
- 1:01:54which is probably actually normal.
- 1:01:55It was still broad daylight at 10:00 PM as.
- 1:01:58Well, yeah, so I like to wear an eye mask in bed because it's so
- 1:02:01bright, just like peer and shoot the curtains.
- 1:02:04We're literally like the opposite right now because it's,
- 1:02:08was it the like our winter solstice, our shortest day was
- 1:02:11yesterday, I think. And you notice that like, it's
- 1:02:14dark by maybe 5:30 PM So yeah, everyone's getting to bed
- 1:02:19earlier and sleepy. And like, even in our house,
- 1:02:22everyone's generally sleeping in a bit longer.
- 1:02:25But yeah, so do some week for me and just need to keep it going
- 1:02:29for another back amp. We'll probably keep on going for
- 1:02:32another couple of weeks, but yeah.
- 1:02:35Actually graduate soon. Yeah, Hello, Race.
- 1:02:41Yes, in my week Monday usual double to and from the office.
- 1:02:47I did start with some stride Monday morning, like my office
- 1:02:53is right next to like this steep St.
- 1:02:56Mount St. It's like a like a steep hill.
- 1:02:58So I did some hill sort of strides just before I went into
- 1:03:03work, which I always feel better after I do that like everything
- 1:03:07feels better. So I need to get into a habit of
- 1:03:09doing that a bit more. Tuesday I ran into the office
- 1:03:12and then ran down to the track and we had a 2K threshold into
- 1:03:18Deke's quarters and like it did like 2 weeks ago it just so we
- 1:03:23started the threshold and then it started absolutely.
- 1:03:26But like bucketing down and the the rain, it might, it might be
- 1:03:30like an Irish heat wave, like we're very not wet, well
- 1:03:34prepared for quite wet weather. So and the track, it's sort of
- 1:03:39just that when it gets really heavy, the track just doesn't
- 1:03:41clear the water. And so it was fine for the
- 1:03:45threshold. But then yeah, when we did the
- 1:03:47decks, it was just really wet, which is annoying, but got
- 1:03:51through it. 2K threshold was 611 and then the Dicks, I think I
- 1:03:55was like 70 seconds for the ONS, 40 for the floats.
- 1:03:59But yeah, everything felt fine. So like the week before last
- 1:04:02when I went down to the track, it was like a bit of a failed
- 1:04:04mission because I was coming off the back of that 50K so I wasn't
- 1:04:07able to complete the session. Whereas, yeah, I didn't feel
- 1:04:10nothing. Felt too bad, which was good
- 1:04:13cool down. Wednesday was a bit of a mess.
- 1:04:16I tried to get out for a run in the afternoon, started running,
- 1:04:21and then it started from my house.
- 1:04:23It was working from home and it was really wet.
- 1:04:26So I turned around to run on the treadmill because I just
- 1:04:28couldn't be bothered running in the wet for now, and then jumped
- 1:04:31on the treadmill and the treadmill was skipping around.
- 1:04:33So I lasted about two KS on the treadmill before I spat.
- 1:04:35The chewy went out and ran in the rain and then absolutely,
- 1:04:40but it wasn't raining and then it started bucketing down.
- 1:04:43So then I was, I don't know, I lasted like half an hour, so not
- 1:04:47much of it. It was like three runs that
- 1:04:49maybe total 10 KS. Thursday, double threshold, it
- 1:04:53was 3 by 8 minutes in the morning.
- 1:04:54So that's just around like manga.
- 1:04:58Yeah. Nothing particularly notable,
- 1:04:59just everything felt not too bad.
- 1:05:00And then Thursday afternoon was I was caught at work late, so I
- 1:05:06missed the group. So I did this by myself.
- 1:05:10So it's 3 minutes, 2 minutes, one minute with the same rest as
- 1:05:13it was on times 2. So it's 24 minutes of running,
- 1:05:19doing it by yourself and just with a long day of work, I just
- 1:05:21and doing a workout in the morning, I don't know.
- 1:05:23And not not, I just wasn't all that excited to do it, so I did
- 1:05:27it. Nothing felt amazing, but we
- 1:05:29also had a big workout on Saturday so I sort of wasn't
- 1:05:32getting too excited for it anyway.
- 1:05:34Is that pitch black then as well by the time you're doing that?
- 1:05:38Yeah, it's just, yeah, it's just dark by yourself running around
- 1:05:42late Monga. Everyone had cooled down.
- 1:05:44I think everyone was cooling down or had cooled down by this
- 1:05:46stage so. So hard mentally that when when
- 1:05:50you know that like others are finishing up and you're like
- 1:05:53trying to get yourself up. Yeah, I couldn't.
- 1:05:55Yeah. So I did it, but I was not.
- 1:05:58Yeah, exactly. I just wasn't.
- 1:06:00Like how, how does Lake Mungo now in terms of how busy it is
- 1:06:03compared to like a summer's evening or something?
- 1:06:06Yeah, no, it's completely dead. Yeah.
- 1:06:08There's like, not yeah, yeah, there's very few people out
- 1:06:11there, but yeah, a few of the nights, to be honest.
- 1:06:14So some of these Tuesdays we've copped some wet weather, but
- 1:06:17like tracks like Lakeside on like a Thursday night a couple
- 1:06:22of times, it's just completely still cool, crisp evening.
- 1:06:25Like it's beautiful to run around when it's like that.
- 1:06:29And it was like that. It just had no atmosphere
- 1:06:31because everyone was going home but did it.
- 1:06:34And it was probably good not to have gone too hard because we
- 1:06:36had. So yeah, Friday I squeezed in a
- 1:06:39smaller run in the morning and then ran home from the office in
- 1:06:43the afternoon. And then Saturday we had a
- 1:06:46larger workout. I think it'd been a couple of
- 1:06:48week. RAF was sort of this, I'm not
- 1:06:50going to race in the next few weeks.
- 1:06:51So this was sort of, and the group was doing, there's a big
- 1:06:54group ahead of Gold Coast Marathon or half Marathon doing
- 1:06:57like some big workouts. So we sort of, a few of us
- 1:07:00joined in to do them just to sort of have some added training
- 1:07:05stimulus given there was the opportunity for that.
- 1:07:07So rather than just our regular Saturday morning, we did Max and
- 1:07:11I had 11 by 1K on one K off. But the offs weren't
- 1:07:16particularly off. So I think the hope was to maybe
- 1:07:19run around three O 7 for the ONS and 319 for the offs.
- 1:07:23And again, it's sort of bucketed down maybe 15 minutes in, which
- 1:07:27was super annoying. It was pretty wet, a wet
- 1:07:30morning. So we ref sort of said just
- 1:07:33start at 310 pace and see where you get to.
- 1:07:36And yeah, it didn't really progress much from that.
- 1:07:38We're pretty soaked by maybe 5 KS into it.
- 1:07:42But yeah, it's sort of, I did all the reps didn't feel too
- 1:07:46bad. I didn't feel like I was
- 1:07:48completely all out. So yeah, it was 11/22 KS 315
- 1:07:52average. For 3:15 average.
- 1:07:54So you were around 3:20 or something for the offs?
- 1:07:57Yeah, so it kept them. The offs were all pretty similar
- 1:08:00and then yeah, the ONS were around that 310.
- 1:08:03You and Max done the whole thing together.
- 1:08:06Max and I were together for about 6 reps and then yeah, he
- 1:08:09said, he said his legs were, I think his legs were starting to
- 1:08:12seize up. So he's never run that far
- 1:08:14before. And I think he was pretty
- 1:08:16wrecked by the end. Like he jumped on the air spin
- 1:08:19bike or some of the elliptical or whatever cross trainer to for
- 1:08:23his cooldown. I think he was pretty wrecked by
- 1:08:24the end of it, just these quads were destroyed I think.
- 1:08:29Because that's 22K of warehouse volume and then you warm up,
- 1:08:33cool down. Are you fueling throughout that
- 1:08:35or not? I had some toast before I left
- 1:08:38and I took a gel with me. So I had a gel that was that's
- 1:08:43about it. Yeah, it's probably not ideal is
- 1:08:48I'm bad with that sort of stuff like, and I literally have a box
- 1:08:51of gels, you know, like Vlad supplies me with all this stuff.
- 1:08:55I, I don't know why I didn't take more of it.
- 1:08:57I don't know. I just thought it's a half
- 1:08:59marathon so I don't need to. It's probably not, because it's
- 1:09:02not. It's not like titled.
- 1:09:05If it was titled as a marathon workout, then you would probably
- 1:09:08take it more seriously. But.
- 1:09:09Every 15 minutes I'll be grabbing something off the
- 1:09:11table. But because in my head it was
- 1:09:13just like 1/2 marathon workout, I didn't.
- 1:09:16I literally thought I was being smart carrying a gel with me.
- 1:09:20But yeah, you're probably right. I probably should have, could
- 1:09:21have had a bit more than that, but I didn't.
- 1:09:24Which leads me into my long run. I didn't take anything on my
- 1:09:27long run today. Two hours, 15, just laps around
- 1:09:33herdsmen with Josh joined us for a couple and yeah, ticked it
- 1:09:37off. Just under 30 KS, so I think
- 1:09:40that's like 157 case for the week.
- 1:09:44Are Are you sure you're not? Running out of jealous?
- 1:09:46Because that's unusual for you to not take any, isn't it?
- 1:09:49Yeah, I've just been, I don't know what I'm doing, to be
- 1:09:52honest. I don't know.
- 1:09:52I just didn't think. It's just just bad planning when
- 1:09:57I'm running out the door, to be honest, I, I think if I'm not
- 1:09:59hungry when I leave the house, I'm like, I'll be all right.
- 1:10:02And then you get out there and you're like, it's not smart.
- 1:10:05Wouldn't have minded one. What are you still starting at
- 1:10:086:00 AM or 603? No, I think the the group's
- 1:10:12fallen apart, to be honest. So, yeah.
- 1:10:16And so it's been a bit easier. Hails will get up and do her run
- 1:10:21and then they normally head out. They're normally got to catch up
- 1:10:25in the morning. So I'll help with that and then
- 1:10:27I'll go for my run so it starts a bit later.
- 1:10:29At least you can wait for daylight then as well.
- 1:10:32Yeah, it's a bit more pleasant running when it when the sun's
- 1:10:34up. We started that workout
- 1:10:35yesterday in the pitch black. So mileage for you. 158.
- 1:10:40Very nice. We're bubbling nicely, fellas.
- 1:10:45How are you going on, Ryan? Well, I said on my little insert
- 1:10:48last week I'm going to stop doing the training updates
- 1:10:50because nothing's really happening.
- 1:10:52However, like I've still been cross training and stuff.
- 1:10:55And then I got a massage because someone told me on the stack
- 1:10:59last week, I said they had planter stuff back when they
- 1:11:02used to run, said they tried the shockwave, didn't work.
- 1:11:05And in the end they just got someone to massage it.
- 1:11:08Like really get the thumbs in and just grin and bear it.
- 1:11:11So I wasn't happy to hear this, but I thought, well, I'm going
- 1:11:14to have to give it a go, aren't I?
- 1:11:16So booked in with this woman, Southwest Sports therapy on the
- 1:11:20world. And she, like, really went to
- 1:11:23work on my calf and my Achilles and, like, the sole of my foot.
- 1:11:28And at first she was like, good Lord, this is like concrete.
- 1:11:33No wonder, like, you're ruined. And that's an observation that
- 1:11:36Raff's made in the past. He was like, you've got dead
- 1:11:38stiff feet. You need to get the Chinese
- 1:11:41women to get the hands into them.
- 1:11:44And by the end of the session, she was like, I'm getting some
- 1:11:51more movement now. It is loosening up and stuff, so
- 1:11:55I don't want to jump the gun. It does feel a little bit
- 1:11:57better, but I'm still not going to run or anything this week
- 1:12:00because what's the point of another week, another massage,
- 1:12:04keep cross training And then maybe like when I get back to
- 1:12:07Perth now I'll I'll hopefully give it a crack.
- 1:12:11It's maybe it's reached the point as well where I probably
- 1:12:13should give it a go. And I'm now a little bit scared
- 1:12:16like am I going to make it worse or not?
- 1:12:18But obviously there comes a point we need to try so.
- 1:12:21Have you tried them needling? No.
- 1:12:24And you've had success that as well?
- 1:12:26Yeah, I just feel like a needle can get to places that like
- 1:12:30hands can't, but I don't know. If it as well.
- 1:12:33Pardon. She done one of those cups.
- 1:12:35You know what people get on the back, the suction thing.
- 1:12:37Yeah, yeah, She had one of them on the foot like.
- 1:12:40Yeah. It'd be worth your while looking
- 1:12:42up through needles. Like, has there been any, like,
- 1:12:45proven success with needles? Yeah.
- 1:12:48Does that hurt now after the massage?
- 1:12:51No I reckon the pain is coming down and in the gym.
- 1:12:54Yesterday of joined the local gym for a week just so I can
- 1:12:57cross train and stuff. I actually done some drills and
- 1:13:02felt fine, so I was thinking maybe I should just go for a
- 1:13:05run, see what happens. So is that a gym in Liverpool?
- 1:13:10In the world, yeah. And how much are you looking at
- 1:13:13a week for that? Offensive to be fair, £25 for a
- 1:13:16week's pass $50. Oh, it's no Revo.
- 1:13:19Yeah, no, it's it's a good gym now.
- 1:13:22Good. Yeah.
- 1:13:23Tell you what is it's an, it's a hybrid Rockstarz gym.
- 1:13:26Oh. God here.
- 1:13:29We go. That's what they're all up to in
- 1:13:34there. The world's gone.
- 1:13:35Oh, but I actually seen Instagram Reel of this, like the
- 1:13:39World Championships of them hybrid rockstars.
- 1:13:42And then they were doing the sled push, right, the sled push.
- 1:13:46And one of the guys got a dodgy lane.
- 1:13:50So the carpet that he had to push the sled on was like, it
- 1:13:54wasn't sliding as easy as it was in other lanes.
- 1:13:57Seen that? Yeah, I think I'm saying that he
- 1:14:01was pulling the rug from underneath himself.
- 1:14:03Yeah, he was going crazy. He was not a happy rock star,
- 1:14:08but but yeah, Oh my God. When you compare that to running
- 1:14:15it doesn't make any sense. Like it's like doing the 5K
- 1:14:19champs Dean you go and run a flat course and yours has got
- 1:14:23hills in and usually run against each other.
- 1:14:25It's like the hell. But I guess that that just rubs
- 1:14:30off on the hybrid Rockstar organization.
- 1:14:33Sums up, yeah. Something that I don't
- 1:14:37understand, something that upsets me generally is like
- 1:14:39course certification. So like, how do you know?
- 1:14:42Because a lot of the times people compare their time
- 1:14:45because, you know, it's the same activities, same disciplines
- 1:14:48every time. But how accurate is the 1
- 1:14:51kilometer? They're definitely measuring it
- 1:14:53off a Garmin watch like 100%. Yeah, it yeah, from what I've
- 1:14:58seen, looks suspicious. Some of them.
- 1:15:00You need that trundle wheel. Need at least a trundle wheel,
- 1:15:04yeah? I don't know why the the hybrid
- 1:15:07topic reminds me of this, but did you see that?
- 1:15:10I don't want to upset anyone with this, but the reel I shared
- 1:15:14to my personal Instagram the other day about the the nose
- 1:15:17tape. No, go on.
- 1:15:19You know, there's things, the things that people wear across
- 1:15:21the nose there. Yeah, this guy.
- 1:15:23'S making the piss. Sorry.
- 1:15:25I think like there's like a brand breathe right like it like
- 1:15:28it's it's a flexible metal bar that goes over the bridge, ear
- 1:15:32nose to help expand your nasal. Passage yeah, this.
- 1:15:37So I'm not going to put it on the on the podcasts thing, but
- 1:15:41I'll send it to you and if anyone's interested in having a
- 1:15:44laugh, they can go and find it. But this guy's tipped his nose
- 1:15:48upwards. Oh, I seen it.
- 1:15:50I seen it. And he's just walking around
- 1:15:53like, oh, I can breathe so much more air because I remember like
- 1:16:00seeing people start to wear them.
- 1:16:01And I was like, genuinely intrigued.
- 1:16:03Is there any benefit to it? So for I'll do a bit of reading.
- 1:16:07And in summary, they say it does open up your your nasal passage,
- 1:16:12but you only breathe through your nose in day-to-day, like
- 1:16:16when you low heart rates, like it's easy breathing, when you
- 1:16:20actually come to demand more air, you start breathing through
- 1:16:23your mouth. So like these people wearing it
- 1:16:26for exercise? That's double trouble.
- 1:16:28That's double trouble. That thing is scam.
- 1:16:32You cannot get enough air through your little nostrils
- 1:16:35when you were running. It's irrelevant, no.
- 1:16:37Galen used to wear them. Oh, here we go.
- 1:16:41If Galen Robb jumped off a bridge, would you?
- 1:16:45That logic, that's bad logic. I'm just saying maybe he's, I
- 1:16:49mean, he's, he's tried a few things.
- 1:16:52So, you know, I, I didn't see him wearing them at London, but
- 1:16:55I have seen him with them back in the day.
- 1:16:57It might have been in his collegiate days.
- 1:17:00As well, we often, we often talk about scientific training
- 1:17:04measures, heart rate, lactate, whatever.
- 1:17:06Maybe we should do a couple of sessions with the nose tape on
- 1:17:10the nose tape off and see the effects.
- 1:17:13Bit of anecdotal, see if we find an improvement.
- 1:17:16If it works, it works, you know. Publish a paper on it.
- 1:17:19Easy double. If someone wants to send them
- 1:17:22our way, yeah sure, but I'm not spending my money on the nose
- 1:17:26drips. No, no one's sending those nose
- 1:17:29strips after this conversation. So we have digressed.
- 1:17:37However, there are a few more things that I'd wanted to talk
- 1:17:40about in terms of news. So get in the Britain was found
- 1:17:45predominantly not guilty of all the charges and accusations
- 1:17:49brought towards him from Jacob and the brothers and the sister
- 1:17:53this week, besides 1. He was found guilty of beating
- 1:17:57his daughter, but he was cleared of everything towards the boys.
- 1:18:02Now you shouldn't just brush over the fact that he's been
- 1:18:04found guilty of beating his daughter because to me that's
- 1:18:07like the worst one there is. But they know in the articles
- 1:18:10that I've read and the way that's being communicated, it's
- 1:18:13like it was a win for him almost because he got off with
- 1:18:16everything else. But it's like, well, you beaten
- 1:18:18your daughter up mate, just because he avoided jail, I think
- 1:18:22is the headline. And it's a shame, really, for,
- 1:18:24like, yeah, Hope and his brothers to go through all of
- 1:18:27that. Like, some of the things that
- 1:18:28they actually accused them of doing.
- 1:18:31It's like they said he threatened to drag him out of a
- 1:18:34car and beat him to death. Jakob said he would routinely be
- 1:18:38punched around the head until he vomited.
- 1:18:41Like, it's pretty brutal stuff. I mean, obviously, this is the
- 1:18:43stuff he's been cleared of. So court decides at the end of
- 1:18:47the day. But it's pretty heavy.
- 1:18:49Like next on of a similar vein, not positive news, but you know,
- 1:18:56we've we've spoken of podium 5K the the fast 5K's that are put
- 1:19:02on in the UK. They use a couple of locations,
- 1:19:06Barrowford, Leicestershire and yeah, we've given the brief on
- 1:19:11it before, but to get pros down to these meats and stuff, the
- 1:19:15race director, Chris Barnes been banned for life over
- 1:19:19inappropriate relationships and racist language.
- 1:19:22So I mean, the reading here is pretty grim as well.
- 1:19:26I won't quote it because actually I don't really want to
- 1:19:29say the sort of stuff, but the headline says it all.
- 1:19:31Racist and inappropriate relationships.
- 1:19:34If anyone's interested in the story, the articles on the
- 1:19:38Guardian. But yeah, it was come back it's.
- 1:19:41Shocking. And lastly, there was a lot of
- 1:19:44talk last week, obviously, but Grand Slam track being cancelled
- 1:19:47And then did you see they? And now I'm like, I'm looking at
- 1:19:50like, was it a publicity stunt? Because then two days later,
- 1:19:53they signed this media deal with Sun Sun Media Dial.
- 1:19:58Something Sundial Media Group. And they're confirming that
- 1:20:03they're back for 26. There's all these new payment
- 1:20:07formats from this partner. So I mean it is interesting
- 1:20:10like, but don't know whether you're coming or going with it.
- 1:20:14I think they had to release something because everyone
- 1:20:16thought they cancelled for financial reasons and like,
- 1:20:21looking back, like opening up that thing that the grand
- 1:20:25soundtrack in Jamaica was the worst thing they could have ever
- 1:20:28done. Like the meat visually was shit.
- 1:20:31There was no, there was no fans there.
- 1:20:35The times were really slow. The weather was shit.
- 1:20:38Like it couldn't have gotten off to a worse start.
- 1:20:42So yeah, hopefully they like 100 grand is like a lot, a lot of
- 1:20:47money. Like even if they halved it like
- 1:20:49it would be good. The good thing about about us is
- 1:20:52like we don't have any commercial agreements with
- 1:20:56anyone. So we'll literally just say in
- 1:20:57our opinion, whether it's a bad opinion or a wrong opinion,
- 1:21:00whatever. We're just we are speaking
- 1:21:02honestly. So like city is mug.
- 1:21:05You know that Chris Chavez, they got involved with a bit of a
- 1:21:09partnership with them, didn't he?
- 1:21:11And I heard them trying to explain it the other day and it
- 1:21:14was a bit difficult to listen to because, you know, he's kind of
- 1:21:17endorsed by them and he's trying to be a bit of a sympathizer or
- 1:21:22apologize for them. And it's like, come on.
- 1:21:26I think he's involved. He recruits the athletes for
- 1:21:28them. Oh man.
- 1:21:31But anyway, this SMTG partnership that says they'll
- 1:21:35secure strategic commercial partnerships for Grand Slam
- 1:21:39tracks 26 season and beyond, with 10% of all related
- 1:21:43sponsorship sales by SMTG paid directly to the Grand Slam track
- 1:21:49races. The partnership will include
- 1:21:51interactive digital content and athlete driven storytelling.
- 1:21:54Which you can tell they tried to do that with how it is now
- 1:21:57because care started his YouTube.
- 1:22:00So over we're doing theirs, a new media platform.
- 1:22:03This one's interesting, a new media platform that allows fans
- 1:22:07to Co create, share and own pieces of the narrative.
- 1:22:11So I don't know, I think everyone's turned into, if they
- 1:22:14weren't already a skeptic, they are now very skeptical.
- 1:22:17But let's just see what happens. Did you listen either of you
- 1:22:21guys listen to the Coffee Cup podcast when they spoke about it
- 1:22:24a little bit and they were. I think Ollie Hall was in Europe
- 1:22:28when and he was saying there was some rumours circulating ahead
- 1:22:32of the announcements that it was that they were going to can LA
- 1:22:36meet. And so it sounded like and there
- 1:22:38was talk about athletes not getting paid and some the major
- 1:22:41sponsor or sponsors pulling out and those sorts of things.
- 1:22:44So at least with this sort of positive news, it sounds like
- 1:22:47those sorts of rumours around it folding sounds like that's not
- 1:22:50happening, which is really good for the sport, right?
- 1:22:53Like, you know, when you were talking about like George Mills
- 1:22:57or, or who maybe it was you, Ron, but we were talking about
- 1:23:00how much, how little they, some of these guys are getting paid,
- 1:23:02right, in terms of financial support.
- 1:23:06So at least if there's more competition.
- 1:23:08So didn't the Diamond League increase money a sort of a
- 1:23:11little bit in response? So like, yeah, as as shitty as
- 1:23:15Grand Slam's been to follow, like it's been pretty average to
- 1:23:18we've been, I was excited for it ahead of it starting and then
- 1:23:21the first mate was terrible to view.
- 1:23:23And so there's in terms of like an experience for for viewers,
- 1:23:27it's been bad, very bad. But if they get that right and
- 1:23:32there's really good money for some of these athletes and maybe
- 1:23:36they do it in a better way where like I don't know if there's
- 1:23:39such a high amount of money and such drama ahead of like people
- 1:23:44sort of earning a decent check or I don't know, they need to
- 1:23:48make it so it's worth something for people to want to follow.
- 1:23:50And you can feel the excitement of the athletes sort of ahead of
- 1:23:54those races. If they can capture that and we
- 1:23:56can follow that, then I think it's still got a place and it's
- 1:23:59good in terms of it brings up it all the the rest of the sport
- 1:24:02and athletes are getting paid more and canmore solely focus
- 1:24:05themselves on being full time professional athletes.
- 1:24:07And I think it's a good thing. But yeah, it was certainly ship
- 1:24:11viewing experience for the first year, I think.
- 1:24:13It was Andrew Costa. Stories about.
- 1:24:16That like likes of him, like he hasn't won a Diamond League or
- 1:24:20anything like that. So his only source of income is
- 1:24:22True Athletics Ireland and I don't know whether new bands are
- 1:24:25paying him and whatever prize money he gets then.
- 1:24:28So for him to come second and ground soundtrack and get like
- 1:24:3150 grand, like in that situation, like that is like
- 1:24:35light training that changing like that will support that will
- 1:24:37fund I don't know how many training camps for him.
- 1:24:40So in that way, like, it's so, so good.
- 1:24:43But you don't feel that and that's the issue, like you don't
- 1:24:46get that. You don't feel excited for him.
- 1:24:49And I think if you had a better way of sharing his story in the
- 1:24:54lead up to those races and building some drama and, and,
- 1:24:57and letting us know what it means for them and what that's
- 1:25:00going to do for their season. Then all of a sudden when you're
- 1:25:02watching that race and you see him kicking over the top and
- 1:25:05stuff, you're like, holy shit, how cool is this?
- 1:25:07Yeah, like there should be even a little sub series on the
- 1:25:10challengers because like they are sort of like the underdog,
- 1:25:13like the racers are like the cram, little cram, whereas the
- 1:25:16challengers can. Yeah.
- 1:25:18And some sort of like the races maybe get some sort of base
- 1:25:21salary that they for signing up. But then these challenges if
- 1:25:25they create an upset by beating them should get some sort of
- 1:25:28added financial incentive which which makes it quite exciting.
- 1:25:32And then even like, say live golf, you know, like live golf
- 1:25:35or like that's huge money in golf, but a lot of them don't
- 1:25:39they get cut. So like a lot of the top player,
- 1:25:42like they don't survive in live golf unless your your ranking
- 1:25:46for the year is is at a certain amount and that it's the same as
- 1:25:50like in the Premier League. It's same with like even the PGA
- 1:25:53when you're losing your tour card like that sort of around
- 1:25:56the fringes is super exciting. Like the like if they could race
- 1:25:59for a spot or something like that would be awesome, like a
- 1:26:02spot on the permanent roster or something like that.
- 1:26:04Because imagine if you're then now locked in for a full season
- 1:26:07where you're guaranteed a wage, which in athletics that really
- 1:26:10doesn't happen. But if Grand Slam could ensure
- 1:26:12some sort of financial support, then all of a sudden for the
- 1:26:16next year you sort of know that you can commit yourself fully to
- 1:26:19certain races and to to rather than having to work or whatever.
- 1:26:23Win yourself a contract. Yeah.
- 1:26:25What's matters? I don't think I've told you
- 1:26:28this. I don't know why, but if you can
- 1:26:30put two and two together, you will.
- 1:26:33You'll realise what the source was, and you'll know that the
- 1:26:37source was reliable. But a few months ago someone
- 1:26:41told me that when they were putting together the Jamaica
- 1:26:45meat that Kyle Merba, who's responsible for getting all the
- 1:26:49athletes, he contacted Dave from Ritzenheim and was asking about
- 1:26:55the on guys and set was saying like, can you please just send
- 1:27:00anyone? Is there anyone who'll come?
- 1:27:01Like we're struggling. We can't get athletes signed up
- 1:27:04and none of them wanted to go. Wow.
- 1:27:08Yes, it's how I thought. Maybe they just didn't.
- 1:27:11That was the opposite. I didn't.
- 1:27:12I thought maybe they did it, They weren't asked.
- 1:27:14So that's interesting. Anyway, is that?
- 1:27:16A big answer, Yeah. We'll call it a rumour.
- 1:27:21Nothing's fact that comes out of my mouth.
- 1:27:24I'm not saying it's fact. It's all my opinion.
- 1:27:27Same. Even the ranks.
- 1:27:31Result. This is where we insert like a
- 1:27:34legal debrief or something distancing ourselves from
- 1:27:38statements. All the doping accusations we
- 1:27:42made all. Right, lads, I think that's a
- 1:27:45wrap. Yeah.
- 1:27:47Do you vent them planned for next week guys when you go back
- 1:27:49to Perth around? A week on Tuesday.
- 1:27:51I'll save another. You might get another bit.
- 1:27:53The heat wave over here, even though it's raining right now in
- 1:27:56Ireland, I'm looking at the window here.
- 1:27:58It lasted a day. Oh, isn't next week is Kippy
- 1:28:02Aegon's thing? Isn't it on the 26th the
- 1:28:04breaking 4? Yeah.
- 1:28:06Is it? Yeah.
- 1:28:08Well, let's do like a little. Let's everyone pick a pick a
- 1:28:11time, pick a, pick an estimate. If we get the second then we'll
- 1:28:15dealt with. Oh, it owes us extra coffees.
- 1:28:20Coffee in the croissant. So you have to send.
- 1:28:24US 404.5. I think she'll go 359 his.
- 1:28:30Team took down as a coffee Dean. Yeah, he's just racking them up
- 1:28:35for I'll go, I'll go. Yeah. 4 O you go four O 4.
- 1:28:40Four O 4.5. Oh yeah, I'll go four O 5.
- 1:28:43Like it's not legal. What she's doing is not going to
- 1:28:45be legal. It's going to be like Kipchogi
- 1:28:47breaking too. Like it's not legal, it's not
- 1:28:49going to go down in the history works as well.
- 1:28:50I know the how though. She.
- 1:28:52Was on World Athletics verified? So I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:28:57she does do it. Yeah, I just can't.
- 1:28:59I think. I still think the gap's too big.
- 1:29:01Who knows? I could be.
- 1:29:03Quick on when Kipchogi broke too.
- 1:29:05Was his shoes that super high stack or were they just outflow
- 1:29:09on? They were, yeah.
- 1:29:11No, they they were Alpha, I think.
- 1:29:14Alpha fly. Yeah.
- 1:29:14Oh, OK. OK, OK.
- 1:29:17They weren't anything beyond 40 mil, although there's talk of
- 1:29:20them being designed specifically for his fortune rah rah, but I
- 1:29:24didn't think they were. They didn't look anything
- 1:29:26unusual. Like I think the the 4% was born
- 1:29:29out of his first attempt and then it was just the next
- 1:29:32iteration of that was the breaking 2 issue.
- 1:29:35You know, Speaking of buying coffees, this is just going to
- 1:29:38allow me to plug the The interview with RAF seems to have
- 1:29:42been received well. Like people enjoyed it and
- 1:29:45stuff. Hopefully they got a lot out of
- 1:29:47it or at least something out of it.
- 1:29:49But Josh messaged as usual with a listener question for RAF and
- 1:29:56shock. We didn't go through it because
- 1:29:58it wasn't PG. Well, he was, he was asking him,
- 1:30:01he was asking him what he got for Secret Santa and he wanted
- 1:30:06he wanted me to live. Call him in to the interview and
- 1:30:10he said I'll buy you all coffee if you can dial me in and I'll
- 1:30:13ask him that. Oh.
- 1:30:16Dear guy, No that that's on the Patreon.
- 1:30:20The Patreon that we're putting out there for free.
- 1:30:24That would be priceless. Oh my God.
- 1:30:26And might also be the right time to say, watch this space.
- 1:30:30There could be another interview coming up.
- 1:30:33Oh, don't drop any hints. Don't drop any hints.
- 1:30:39Big. Probably one of the biggest
- 1:30:41names in running genuinely. At the moment, don't would say.
- 1:30:45Worldwide. Worldwide.
- 1:30:46No, Worldwide. Don't say anything.
- 1:30:50Don't drop a hint. Just the hard keep joking I.
- 1:30:54See, it's for dropping. That this end recording button
- 1:30:58is growing in size it's. Going to be our longest 1 yet
- 1:31:03too. Not much of an edit either,
- 1:31:06right? Let's wrap it up.
- 1:31:07Cheers. Yeah, boys, good luck.
