- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is the 25th of January.
- 0:17It is the Monday, the start of a new week and good on you for
- 0:20inviting me into your day. Great to have your company as we
- 0:24are kicking off the last week in our yearly Bible reading plan.
- 0:30Next year we are starting a whole new year, a whole new
- 0:34plan. I know, I know, it feels a
- 0:36little bit strange doing it in February, but oh boy, on the 1st
- 0:39of January, around Christmas time, who's around to organise a
- 0:42new yearly Bible reading? Anyway, here we are and in the
- 0:46year to come we are going to be reading all sorts of amazing
- 0:49things, going into first John and then Hosea and into the
- 0:53Gospel of Mark heading into Easter.
- 0:55Oh so much good stuff coming our way.
- 0:58But that is all to come because right now we are in the thick of
- 1:02the Gospel of Luke walking around with Jesus.
- 1:06And Jesus is going to be hanging out with Zacchaeus today as we
- 1:09do our reading and then finally arrive and enter into Jerusalem.
- 1:15As of course we know that his ultimate mission is one of self
- 1:19sacrifice for you friends, and for me to save us.
- 1:23So, Holy Spirit, as we go back in time with these words
- 1:27captured so long ago, open the eyes of our hearts to see Jesus
- 1:32more clearly, feel his presence more nearly.
- 1:35All right, friends, let's do it. Let us read together Luke
- 1:40chapter 19. Jesus entered Jericho and made
- 1:53his way through the town. There was a man there named
- 1:56Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector
- 1:58in the region, and he had become very rich.
- 2:02He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over
- 2:05the crowd, so he ran ahead and climbed a Sycamore fig tree
- 2:08beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
- 2:12When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by
- 2:16name. Zacchaeus.
- 2:17He said, quick, come down, I must be a guest in your home
- 2:22today. Zacchaeus quickly climbed down
- 2:25and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy, but
- 2:29the people were displeased. He is gone to be the guest of a
- 2:33notorious Sinner, they grumbled. Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood
- 2:37before the Lord and said, I will give half my wealth to the poor
- 2:41Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will
- 2:45give them back four times as much.
- 2:49Jesus responded. Salvation has come to this home
- 2:52today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of
- 2:56Abraham, for the son of man came to seek and save those who were
- 3:01lost. The crowd was listening to
- 3:04everything Jesus said, and because he was nearing
- 3:07Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that
- 3:11the Kingdom of God would begin right away.
- 3:13He said a noble man was called away to a distant empire to be
- 3:18crowned king and then return. Before he left he called
- 3:22together ten of his servants and divided among them 10 lbs of
- 3:26silver, saying, Invest this for me while I'm gone.
- 3:31But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to
- 3:34say We do not want him to be our king.
- 3:38After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the
- 3:41servants to whom he had given the money.
- 3:43He wanted to find out what their profits were.
- 3:46The first servant reported, Master, I invested your money
- 3:50and made 10 times the original amount.
- 3:54Well done, The king exclaimed. You are a good servant, you have
- 3:58been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be
- 4:02governor of 10 cities as your reward.
- 4:05The next servant reported, Master, I invested your money
- 4:09and made five times the original amount.
- 4:12Well done. The king said.
- 4:14You will be governor over 5 cities.
- 4:17But the third servant brought back only the original amount of
- 4:21money and said, Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.
- 4:26I was afraid because you were a hard man to deal with, taking
- 4:29what isn't yours and harvesting crops you didn't plant, you
- 4:34wicked servant, The king roared. Your own words condemn you.
- 4:40If you knew that I'm a hard man who takes what isn't mine and
- 4:44harvests crops I didn't plant, why didn't you deposit my money
- 4:48in the bank? At least I could have gotten
- 4:50some interest on it. Then turning to the other
- 4:53standing nearby, the king ordered, Take the money from
- 4:56this servant and give it to the one who has 10 lbs.
- 5:00But master, they said here ready has 10 lbs.
- 5:04Yes, the king replied. And to those who use well what
- 5:07they are given, even more will be given.
- 5:10But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will
- 5:14be taken away. And As for these enemies of mine
- 5:18who didn't want me to be their king, bring them in and execute
- 5:22them right here in front of me. After telling this story, Jesus
- 5:29went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples
- 5:33as it came to the towns of Beth, Phage, and Bethany on the Mount
- 5:36of Olives, He sent 2 disciples ahead.
- 5:39Go into that village over there, he told them.
- 5:42As you enter it, you'll see a young donkey tied there that no
- 5:46one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
- 5:49If anyone asks why are you untying that colt just say the
- 5:54Lord needs it. So they went and found the colt
- 5:57just as Jesus had said. And sure enough as they were
- 6:00untying it, the owners asked them why are you untying that
- 6:04colt? And the disciples simply replied
- 6:07the Lord needs it. So they brought the colt to
- 6:10Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.
- 6:15As he rode along, the crowd spread out their garments on the
- 6:18road ahead of him. When he reached the place where
- 6:21the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers
- 6:25began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for
- 6:29all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
- 6:32Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord, peace
- 6:36in heaven and glory in highest heaven.
- 6:40But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, Teacher, rebuke
- 6:44your followers for saying things like that, he replied.
- 6:48If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into
- 6:53cheers. But as he came closer to
- 6:56Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
- 7:01How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way
- 7:05to peace. But now it is too late and peace
- 7:09is hidden from your eyes. Before long your enemies will
- 7:13build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close
- 7:17in on you from every side. They will crush you into the
- 7:21ground and your children with you.
- 7:24Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place because
- 7:28you did not recognise it when God visited you.
- 7:33Then Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out the
- 7:36people, selling animals for sacrifices.
- 7:39He said to them, the scriptures declare my temple will be a
- 7:43House of prayer and you have turned it into a a den of
- 7:46thieves. After that he taught daily in
- 7:50the temple. But the leading priests, the
- 7:53teachers of religious law and the other leaders of the people
- 7:56began planning how to kill him. But they could think of nothing
- 8:01because all the people hung on every word, he said.
- 8:15Oh Lord, there is nothing that escapes your understanding and
- 8:19your knowledge, and as we stand here before You in prayer, we
- 8:24know that You see right to the depths of our heart, to our
- 8:27motivations, to our fears, to our misunderstandings, and you
- 8:34love us anyway. Oh Jesus, thank you for your
- 8:39decadent, wonderful, overarching love.
- 8:43Love that would drive you to walk those streets toward
- 8:47Jerusalem where you knew that your doom awaited you, but still
- 8:51you did it because you love us and you know that we need saving
- 8:57and you're the one to do it. Oh our wonderful Saviour, we do
- 9:02love you and we're so grateful for you and we pray that you
- 9:06stand by our side and that we would know it every step we
- 9:11take. Today we pray this in your
- 9:13saving name, Jesus, Amen.
