- 0:03>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Welcome back to 4Q, the podcast where.
- 0:06>> Dr. Terry Simpson: We make sense of food, health and the madness of government.
- 0:09Priorities armed, um, only with science,
- 0:11sarcasm.
- 0:12>> Dr. Terry Simpson: And a blood pressure cuff.
- 0:16I'm Dr. Terry Simpson, your chief medical
- 0:18explanationist, and this is Fork U
- 0:21Fork University, where we make sense of the
- 0:24madness, bust a few myths, and teach you a
- 0:27little bit about food and medicine.
- 0:33And today, we're talking about the
- 0:35grand performance of banning petroleum based food
- 0:38dyes while gutting the science that can
- 0:41actually save lives.
- 0:43First, let's tackle the food dye
- 0:46panic. The headlines scream you're
- 0:49eating petroleum. Let's calm down and
- 0:51use some chemistry. Petroleum and isn't
- 0:55gasoline.
- 0:56>> Dr. Terry Simpson: It's ancient dead plankton turned into
- 0:59hydrocarbons. The same carbon and
- 1:01hydrogen building blocks.
- 1:03>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Found in avocado oil, olive oil, and.
- 1:06>> Dr. Terry Simpson: The Omega 3 supplements you love.
- 1:09>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Food dyes like Red 40 are
- 1:11purified.
- 1:12>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Mostly tested molecules made safely from those
- 1:15hydrocarbons. Saying you're eating gasoline
- 1:18because Red 40 comes from hydrocarbons is
- 1:21like saying you're eating explosives because table
- 1:23salt contain sodium. And the
- 1:26best part, the same people
- 1:29screaming about petroleum in food dyes are
- 1:32happily swallowing methylene blue, also
- 1:35made from petroleum derivatives.
- 1:38So are your vitamins. Science.
- 1:40It's not just when it's convenient.
- 1:43You're not eating gasoline. You're eating
- 1:46molecules, some tested for safety
- 1:49that just happens to come from ancient
- 1:51carbon. Meanwhile, in the real
- 1:54world, while we celebrate dye free
- 1:56gummies, the federal government is slashing public health
- 1:59funding, including food inspection programs,
- 2:02bird flu monitoring, injury
- 2:05prevention initiatives, research
- 2:07grants that fund actual nutrition and
- 2:10safety studies. We're setting ourselves up for
- 2:13dirtier food, slower outbreak
- 2:16responses, and a world where emerging public
- 2:19health threats don't get studied because we blew the budget
- 2:22keeping cupcakes slightly less neon.
- 2:25And who's in charge of this science? Heavy decision
- 2:27making. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The
- 2:30man who, as far as anyone can find, never
- 2:33took a single science course
- 2:36in college. Naturally, he's now in charge of
- 2:39the agency that oversees America's scientific
- 2:42backbone.
- 2:42>> Dr. Terry Simpson: But, hey, he's doing exactly what he.
- 2:45>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Was hired to do. Advocate for things that make food
- 2:48babe and the Instagram wellness crowd happy.
- 2:51Forget real science. Forget investing in
- 2:54systems that keep our food, water and people safe. As long
- 2:57as lettuce doesn't run away with your colon, everything's
- 2:59great. Also in real science, milk might
- 3:02not be so innocent. A recent study found that full fat
- 3:05milk consumption is associated with a higher.
- 3:07>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Risk of developing metabolic dysfunction associated with
- 3:10fatty liver disease.
- 3:13If you're keeping track of acronyms and you shouldn't
- 3:16particularly among highly educated populations.
- 3:18>> Dr. Terry Simpson: I know it's correlation.
- 3:21You know that $7 full fat latte
- 3:24might be sneaking toward your fatty liver
- 3:27one creamy sip at a time. And here's the real
- 3:30kicker. We desperately need more follow up and research
- 3:33on findings like these. But if we keep cutting scientific
- 3:35grants to wage war on brightly colored cereal, don't
- 3:38expect many answers anytime soon. So
- 3:41next time you hear about a major public health victory because artificial
- 3:44yellow.
- 3:44>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Dye got banned, just remember, you might.
- 3:47>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Dodge the neon cupcake, but you'll still.
- 3:50>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Be dodging pathogens, unsafe, um, milk
- 3:52and.
- 3:53>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Preventable diseases with fewer
- 3:55scientists left to catch them.
- 4:01>> Dr. Terry Simpson: This podcast was written and researched by me, Dr. Terri
- 4:04Simpson.
- 4:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: And while I am a board certified.
- 4:06>> Dr. Terry Simpson: MD, which frankly gives me more credentials and Robert F.
- 4:09Kennedy Jr. I am not your
- 4:11MD.
- 4:12>> Dr. Terry Simpson: This podcast is for medical education and entertainment
- 4:15purposes only.
- 4:16>> Dr. Terry Simpson: If you need a personal medical advice, please consult
- 4:19a real board certified physician. Not a
- 4:21chiropractor, not an eastern trained shaman,
- 4:24and definitely not some random YouTube guru
- 4:27or RFK Junior 4Q is
- 4:30distributed by our friends at Simpler Media and made possible
- 4:33by the pod God himself, Mr.
- 4:36Evo Tara. And
- 4:39remember, stay skeptical, stay
- 4:41curious, and always fork
- 4:44responsibly.
- 4:49>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Nivo.
- 4:51>> Dr. Terry Simpson: I guess we have to have those.
- 4:52>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Dull Canadian Fruit Loops. You know, in
- 4:55Canada they allow all of those colors. They
- 4:58just like their Fruit Loops
- 5:00dull. I don't get it.
- 5:05>> Speaker C: Yeah, I'm pretty sure you've outgrown the fruit
- 5:08loops stage, Dr. Simpson.
- 5:11Anyhow, Canada and food
- 5:13poutine. I don't really care what it's made of,
- 5:16it's delicious.
