- 0:53our listeners. Thanks so much for all of your support, and today's adventure
- 0:59of Frank Race is called the Adventure of the Six Week Cure. The Adventures
- 1:06of Frank Race starring Paul Dubon. The War changed many things, the base
- 1:19of the Earth and the people on it. Before the war, Prank Race
- 1:23worked as an attorney, but he traded his law books for the cloak and
- 1:26tagger of the Oss and when it was over, his former life was over.
- 1:30Two adventure had become his business, the Adventures of Frank Race. Now
- 2:39we joined Frank Race for the Adventure of the Six Week Cure. Raino,
- 2:47Nevada, a simple city like any other American city, the one made notorious
- 2:53for its gambling clubs and per harboring the sickest people in the world. The
- 2:57temporary home of would be divorce is taking a six week cure from the yels
- 3:00of marriage. You could see there's strained white faces on the streets and in
- 3:05the restaurants, in the clubs, the faces of women not quite sure what
- 3:08had happened. I'm not quite sure why they were here. I'm not quite
- 3:12sure where they were going tomorrow. You know something, Rice, All my
- 3:17life I've been hearing about gay divorces. But the babes around here do not
- 3:22look so gay to me. There's nothing gay about a marriage that doesn't work
- 3:24mark for most of them. This is the bitter end of a screen that's
- 3:29never fun. May well leave us, not stay around. It'll be poor
- 3:31parents. You got your business, be insurance company, all fit up,
- 3:35Leave us, get back to the York. What's your rash. We can
- 3:37take a little vacation, some great fishing in the mountains here. Oh I
- 3:39no, you don't know. You don't not with me. I remember the
- 3:42last time I got more hookshin on myself and I get into the fish,
- 3:46besides which I wind up eating nothing but bread, because it is the only
- 3:50pool we have which don't have bones. All right, Marcus, you win.
- 3:53Besides, I'm not so sure that should go fishing. What do you
- 3:57mean? There is a dish sitting at that table open the corner, and
- 4:00she has been making parises with her eyeballs ever since we come in here,
- 4:04and she ain't no trout where. Oh it's it's Olga Petrov. You know
- 4:12I will certainly do know her, Olga, Olga baby. Oh Race,
- 4:17I wasn't sure it was you, Olga Petrov. If there's a better ballerine
- 4:21in the world, I've never seen her. She moved with infinite grace,
- 4:26and your heart left your body to walk beside her on stage. Rov.
- 4:29It's been so long, race Paris, just before the germs took over,
- 4:34left without saying goodbye. Boris was jealous, remembered, and with good reason.
- 4:39I was beginning to fall in love with you. That's a nice race,
- 4:42that's very sweet. Oh, oh, excuse me, Olga. This
- 4:45is Mark Donovan, my very good friend. Hello, mister Donovan, baby
- 4:48singing again. By the way, how is Boris? He's fine, He's
- 4:55here with you. He's here race, but not with me. Don't tell
- 5:00yes, I'm here for what. You're so quaintly cold? A six week
- 5:03cure divorced. I'm really very sorry to hear that. Where are you staying,
- 5:09Race, Well, we're really not staying. We came in on the
- 5:11plane this morning to settle a claim. We're going right back. Grace,
- 5:14please stay for a little while. I'm in trouble, desperate, torrible.
- 5:18I am staying at a dude wrench ten miles out on the highway. There
- 5:23are accommodations open. Mark will drive us out. We can talk it over
- 5:26on the way. What when wrong, Olga? I know you didn't take
- 5:38your marriage lightly. I guess I am a war casualty race. Even at
- 5:43this late date, the bell at is ruined temporarily in Europe. They can't
- 5:47support it, not on the scale Boris demands. They can barely find food.
- 5:51I know. So we came to America. You know Boris, You
- 5:57know how he likes to live like an emperor. He found somebody to financy
- 6:00tour patron of the arts. I would hardly say that he was financed by
- 6:04a man named Joe Rockland, big Rocky of the Hood, financing a ballet
- 6:09company. That's right, Race, Big Rocky, as you call him.
- 6:13He's in love with me and he's forcing you in Boris to split. I
- 6:16wish that Brosseau. If it were, we could run away, but it
- 6:20isn't. There's another woman, another woman. Boris must be blind. He
- 6:26isn't in love with her, at least I don't think so. But she's
- 6:30very wealthy. That's an attraction Boris cannot resist. I want to tell me
- 6:34who she is from Maitland Wilson, Maitland's wife. But she's still married.
- 6:42She's here too, race getting a divorce. We are all what you call
- 6:46one big, happy family. She started to cry and I put my arms
- 6:51around her. She wasn't meant for cheers, not this baby. Her perfect,
- 6:56almost taboo exotic like everything else about her. Even if fran Maitland had
- 7:00all the money in the world, Boris Petrov was a chump to give this
- 7:03up. I'm sorry. Yes, all I know about dancing her life I
- 7:11learned from Boris. He has been all things to me. I don't relish
- 7:17the thought of being alone, I know. And you're gonna find it difficult
- 7:20to be alone with Big Rocky after you, very difficult. The barbed triple
- 7:30X Dude Ranch was very much on the sedentary side so far as the guests
- 7:34were concerned. The most strenuous activity seemed to be the lifting of cocktail glasses,
- 7:39but there was nothing sedentary about the owner of the ranch, Male Westcott.
- 7:43She was pressing seventy by doing it the hard way. This gentle old
- 7:46lady, believe it or not, could sit on a Mustang like Roy Rogers.
- 7:49She could also pilot her own helicopter. Understand you're race. I've never
- 7:55been checked out in a helicopter. She's good for keeping the herging side most
- 7:59ranchers think of. Though it's something new and range riding. They'll come around,
- 8:01Missus Westcott. Maybe you'd like to come with me some day and see
- 8:05how big this ranch really is anytime. Get you away from these crazy females
- 8:09for a while. Women wanting to be without their men folks make them me.
- 8:13Oh, been looking all over? Boshan paused, what do you want
- 8:18that pool woman? Missus Bryan ain't back m ride yet. You must be
- 8:22lost. Someone ought to go find it. You were supposed to go with
- 8:24her. Well, I have other things to do. Sure, shining up
- 8:28to that cry and Maitland Now I told you to stay away from again.
- 8:31I don't go yelping at me, coming range, I'm coming. Excuse me,
- 8:35mister Race, I'm going to close down. Oh girl's great. A
- 8:39character. He spoke from just behind my left shoulder, but I didn't have
- 8:43to see his face to know him. Joe Rockland Big Rocky, hardly the
- 8:48type to be calling anybody else as character. I turned and looked into those
- 8:52small black eyes. He was wearing a boat tie, and if it had
- 8:56been the kind that'd lit up, it would have spelled murdered, done cheaply.
- 9:00You're getting a divorce, Race, I'm not married. Rocky ordering several
- 9:05kinds of divorces. Sometimes the guy gets his arm broke. That's a kind
- 9:09of a divorce from musing it anymore. Sometimes a guy gets tired of living
- 9:13and signs off. He could call it a divorce. What you're saying,
- 9:18what you mean aren't the same, I hear, smart, Race, I
- 9:22sort of feel there ain't no reason for you to be an arena. I'm
- 9:24a friend of Olga Petrovs. She's playing a tough hand. I want to
- 9:28stick around until the cards are counted. Boris and me can take care of
- 9:31that. I don't remember inviting you to my wedding. I'm coming anyhow,
- 9:35just to make sure there's no shotgun pointing at the bride. So you really
- 9:41did come for a divorce the tough kind. Well, from now on,
- 9:46I'm your lawyer, going to handle the whole thing for you, starting with
- 9:50a prop and arm. I'm afraid you're even going to supply the arm roun
- 9:54me To's all right, I'll get out of here and see you again till
- 10:03I'm sorry. Everybody. We're old friends. He gets playful. Yesh thak
- 10:09here, pretty good, don't ye es, guy? That's like my husband.
- 10:16Sorry to evoke unpleasant memories, missus, missus towner. This is Robert
- 10:20Sawner, but you can call me Solvia because you're just like him. That's
- 10:26like my big, tough husband. What's your name? Brace, Frank Brace
- 10:33serious? Thank you? It's like Robert. He's just a man. It's
- 10:39another hell. I'll be rid of him in another week. What do you
- 10:45think of that? Congratulations. I'm lonesome. I don't like to be alone.
- 10:52I'm almost thirty and I don't like I gave him ten years. No,
- 10:56I'm alone. You could go back to him, Sylvia. Ever think
- 11:01of that? I don't think of anything else. I can't you know why
- 11:07he doesn't want me back? Because I had him arrested for hitting me.
- 11:11I should I kill him? You better come outside? People are standing,
- 11:15No I care. I'll come out now. I'll get a grip on yourself
- 11:26yours. I never want to see another man like that as long as I
- 11:31live. Give me that hardy seem away with the ladies. Hello, Boris,
- 11:43I get told me you were here. Age told me a lot of
- 11:46things too. What are you setting a rough for? We are getting a
- 11:50divorce, that's all. It should not distib you. You're really fundable game.
- 11:56Of course you may have some rough competition this time. Don't be a
- 11:58full Boris. That girl never looked at anybody but you. You've been her
- 12:01whole life. She will find another life, just as I will find another
- 12:05one. But Fran Maitland, your new life might be more interesting than you
- 12:09think, more interesting and less peaceful. Is that so, mister Race.
- 12:13I hadn't seen her come around the end of the ranch house, but suddenly
- 12:16she was there, a striking woman of thirty five. Everything about it was
- 12:22reckless, her face, her figure, the way she wore her clothes.
- 12:24I had met her once before, investigating the loss of some jewelry, and
- 12:28once met Fran Maitland was not easily forgotten. Let's hear your theory about life
- 12:33with me, mister Race. It might driden my day. I've been bored.
- 12:35That's your trouble. Baby. You get bored too easily, and it
- 12:39takes a new man to snap you out of it. Are you volunteering,
- 12:41Race, or someone's like this? I never volunteer. I do not like
- 12:46your attitude, Race, I love it. I'm finding you more and more
- 12:50intriguing. Race. Don't try too hard. I don't fit into your collection
- 12:54of oddities. I'm not an artist like Boris, and I can't match Buzz
- 12:58Westcott's drawl. What do you mean by at the days? Yeah, I'll
- 13:00tell you what he means. He means I've been riding with Rescut while you've
- 13:03been chasing after Sylvia Toner. She's younger than I am bors darling, but
- 13:07she doesn't have any money. Her husband won't settle it down. Well.
- 13:11I can see you two lovebirds have a lot to discuss. Excuse me.
- 13:22Mark and I had only one interest, keeping an eye on Auga Petrov,
- 13:24and we avoided the rest of the guests until night came. It was Marl
- 13:28Westcott who broke up a dull evening for us by taking us for a ryde
- 13:31or helicopter. I do they share every once in a while at night check
- 13:35up on rush. Didn't you know? I don't see I can spot him
- 13:39from up here. We've got a powerful spot by all. Just have to
- 13:41shine it down when I see something suspicious going on. When she parted a
- 13:46herd up ahead there, you see him in the moonlight. Oh yeah,
- 13:48yeah, yeah. When we get over him, we'll lying off. Hey
- 13:50what a gimmick. Do you think a Texas Rangers would give up their ponies
- 13:54willing to fly things like days instead? I'll hang right over him. Now,
- 13:58turn on that night where race? Sure look at that. He didn't
- 14:03scare her anything. See the light way up here, Mark, They're used
- 14:05to a thing called the sun. It comes up every morning. Yeah,
- 14:09you're right. Wait a minute. Look there on the other side of the
- 14:13herd. It's one of our horses. Yes, and he saddled something.
- 14:18What is it? I don't know, but we better go down and find
- 14:20out, my Westcott said. The helicopter down, and we walked around the
- 14:24herts where the horse stood. The animal was nuzzling the thing we had seen
- 14:26on the ground. It was the body of a woman. I knelt over
- 14:31her A point at branding iron had been stabbed through her throat. It was
- 14:35Sylvia Tunner. When she was dead, we'll return to the adventures of Frank
- 14:46Race. And just about one minute and I'll back to the adventures of Frank
- 15:54Race. Sylvia Tarmer had had her last drink and her last heartache. Box
- 16:06stood guard over the body while Mark Westcott and I pulled back to the ranch
- 16:08house to call the authorities. There wasn't much to be done, so I
- 16:11went to the cottage to turn in. You don't go in Race. It's
- 16:18a nice night. It was Rocky again. This time he wasn't playing it
- 16:22on the physical side. It was using science. The science of a deadly
- 16:26automatic had produced the desired chemical reaction. It dispelled my inclination to ignore him.
- 16:32I figured we might take a little walk down the road het a curty
- 16:37We could take a spin night. Ear who knows might give you the money
- 16:41or lead poisoning. That's a possibility. You're essential to catch a fatal disease
- 16:47like Sylvia Tommer. I get a theory about her Race. I think you
- 16:52killed me. I think I can clear myself you and Sylvia had quite a
- 16:56beef today. You would trying to get room atic in broad daylight the day
- 17:00how to scratch you up a bit? Chors, don't you've spent quite a
- 17:03yard. It gets more interested. Go ahead, she rides off. He
- 17:08wasn't round all afternoon, So it figures you followed. I was in my
- 17:11cottage. Yeah, but the cops won't know that you followed the See he
- 17:15was mad about them scratches and your pretty person who you blow your top and
- 17:21killed. You ought to change your brand. Whatever you're smoking. You can't
- 17:23sell that to the police. Oh, I ain't finished. I'm coming to
- 17:26the best place you went for a plane ride? And who spotted the body?
- 17:32You? That is something guy always does to cover up. Only after
- 17:37the call for the bulls goes hop, you get nervous. Yes, so
- 17:41you hop into your rented car, which I have done by the road.
- 17:45You drive out to a lonely spot. Then you take this automatic, which
- 17:48also happens to be you. I just lifted it, and you blow your
- 17:52brings out. Neat, very neat. But there's one weak point. Yeah,
- 17:59what you kid? Give me that gun? So are here fistic and
- 18:03come on, let it go into the bush's Rocky place. What is somebody
- 18:11with a long range rifle trying to get into the Keep lowing the gun backs
- 18:15awaken blast who's back mine? Keep low and stay happy? Whoever it is
- 18:21to the product and wouldn't stay around. Lights are going on in the other
- 18:25cottages. You're right now, you can get lost rock again. Don't come
- 18:27back, You, my friend, are a real sweet pal. What strong
- 18:37Marcus? Leave me night? Cacus with it name? It was no condition
- 18:41to be company for me and I'm coyotes Harland's well, thanks for lovely It
- 18:47was fully as interesting here. Rocky had me set up for an obituary that
- 18:49would have blackened the family is Scutcheon English? Do you think Rocky qroked the
- 18:55dame? I don't know anybody could have done it. There are too many
- 18:57people and too many reasons. Even Robert Tonner is a possibility, Sylvia's husband.
- 19:03He might be around someplace, but he's very unlikely. Why because he'd
- 19:07have no reason to be taking rifle shots at me or Rocky. I gotta
- 19:11find out who was behind that rifle, who they were shooting at and why?
- 19:14And also we tossed this crown and will makes maskter. We could whip
- 19:18up a billy of a cake mark. Tomorrow we start a mingle with the
- 19:21guests. Sooner or later one of them will make a mistake. The next
- 19:32morning, a tennis match got underway and I found myself teamed in the doubles
- 19:34with fran Maitland. Our opponents were Olga and Boris Petrov. Nice recovery race,
- 19:41He's a top opponents. Watch it very good, guilt, great delicious,
- 19:52you are still very good race. Well, we have a win.
- 19:53I don't think I could leave that net as easily as you and Boris do
- 19:56it. For a little liquid refreshment, I'll go back to skate shooting in
- 20:00the future. It's it's less sprenuous. Who's a bit on the boards?
- 20:03He comes like the features of the pliniques, brace buzz Westcott looks like there's
- 20:07something wrong. You've been better, come help. We've got to get away.
- 20:12What's happened that mister rock found him out on the range. You've been
- 20:15shot. The bullet had gone through a big Rocky's back, and if he
- 20:25had known who fired it, it was knowledge. He never passed on.
- 20:27He was dead, but his demise filled in one bit of information he and
- 20:32not I had been a target of the long range rifle of the night before.
- 20:34How long you reckon? It's been dead right, I should say since
- 20:38early this morning, about five am. Anybody who was conscious of that deserves
- 20:42to be shot. How can you say such a thing? Have you no
- 20:45heart? We'll go all right, send Golly. This is no place to
- 20:48be choosing upsides. You slot with him yesterday? Did you not the race
- 20:51that I did? Boris? And I may fight with you today if you
- 20:53don't get out of the way and keep quiet. Look at this wound whistcut
- 20:57I want boy ended the back between the short blades and came up to the
- 21:02stomach. It follows a downward course. Does that have a significance, Grace?
- 21:07Yes, it means that the shot might have been fired by somebody mounted,
- 21:10might have come from the top of that hill. That too, that's
- 21:11possible. It comes small must at the range. All of you get off
- 21:19the range and get back to the ranch and stay there. Missus west Scott.
- 21:22There's no point in blaming anybody for this until we ain't blaming anybody but
- 21:26myself, mister Race. I never locked this gift business, and I'm closing
- 21:29it down today. Now, I want everybody off the place by sun.
- 21:32Now I wait a minute, I reckon. I got something to say about
- 21:33that. Wait, you just reckon again. This ranch is mine until I
- 21:37dine. I ain't close to that yet. You don't like it, you
- 21:40can tear off through the rest now long I'm on the wagon and follow me.
- 21:42I'll go with you, mister Westcott. I don't need an extra hand.
- 21:48Mister race you can go back with your brains. I don't want you
- 21:51to put them off the ranch just yet. If you do, the murderer
- 21:53may never be caught. That's none of my affair. I ain't the shearing.
- 21:56No, but you're a suspect. You mind explaining that the shot that
- 22:03killed Rockland was fired from a point above and behind him. It could have
- 22:07been fired by a rider, or from the top of a hill. Might
- 22:11also have been fired from a helicopter. I'd have to have a reason,
- 22:14wouldn't I. Your son might have been the reason you told him to stay
- 22:18away from the guests. Sylvia Tanner fluctuated between loneliness and hysteria. Maybe Buzz
- 22:22was getting involved with her. That wouldn't make me kill mister Rockland. It's
- 22:26always easy to tie up the second murder if you have a motive for the
- 22:29first. Sort of got your crowd, haven't you, mister Race. I
- 22:33don't like it, but that's the way it is. All right, I'll
- 22:37meet you halfway. Everybody can stay for twenty four hours. Listen, Race
- 22:52off your rocket. What do you want to go? Ride in the night.
- 22:55Set yourself up like a clay pigeon. It's the only way to play
- 22:56it. We have a much time. You go into the high and just
- 23:00drop a hint that I've discovered something. It may force a move. Yeah,
- 23:03like the mold big rocky guy. He rode out of here, Tony
- 23:06come back very unhealthy? Yes he did, but it's man rode out of
- 23:11here? Did he ride out? There was no horse near him, and
- 23:15it was too far from the walk. I don't get it. He was
- 23:18packed out. Mark, he was killed here and carried out there. Get
- 23:19your flashlight out open that crowd. He yeah, it's just a chance.
- 23:25I'll show you if I find it. One side boy, come here,
- 23:29all right, Mark, all the light close? Yeah, no, try
- 23:33that room there. Yeah. Sure, but if you'd only tell you what
- 23:36here? It is here? It is, look right, it's always got
- 23:38a strake of dirt on him. It isn't dirt, mark us, it's
- 23:41blood, dried blood on his hide. And now I know I'm mistaken.
- 23:45What's that? I was looking for one murderer and there were two, or
- 23:49rather there were two. You mean Rocky was one of him. Yes,
- 23:52he killed Sylvia to keep her away from Baris. He was sick. There
- 23:56were other suspects with good motives. Yeah, yeah, yeah, But hop
- 23:59Brock. Within an hour, you're still going to spread a little propaganda in
- 24:02the ranch house. All right? What do you wanted to say? Tell
- 24:04him that Rockman wasn't killing on the range. Tell them I'm checking the scene
- 24:07of the murder. But Race, you don't know why, Yes I do.
- 24:11Rocky was killed in his own cottage. That explains the course of the
- 24:15bullet. He was in bed, asleep in the murderer fired the rifle from
- 24:18the window above the head of the bed. Let's take myself out in his
- 24:22cottage. Go past the word Race. I'm here, Fran. Couldn't we
- 24:37have a little light. We don't need it, baby, It's more romantic
- 24:41this way. Besides, I found but I was seeking what did you find?
- 24:45Race? I dug a rifle slug out of Rocky's Memphis. It was
- 24:49clever of you to change the linens, but made you suspect me. Rocky
- 24:53was a rough customer. Your infatuation with Boris was wearing thin. You wanted
- 24:57to dump him. That didn't jail with rock He's planned, so he made
- 25:00threats, but you beat him to the gun. I'm determined woman. You
- 25:04should get to know me better. I don't think I'd get to know you
- 25:07for very long. Though my horse settlement is quite liberal razor, I might
- 25:12make you forget a lot of things. Money and me. That should be
- 25:17a tempting combination. Money and you are attempting, but I imagine there's a
- 25:22rather forbidden pistol in your hand, isn't there? Yes, I try to
- 25:26be more clever the last time. Her rifles seem to be a rather unlikely
- 25:29weapon for a woman to use, not for you, Fran, you made
- 25:32a mistake. You mentioned skey chewing is one of your favorite pastimes. Why
- 25:36don't you move out of the shadows race to give you a better shot.
- 25:38That might make it quick and pains. I have some bad news for your
- 25:41Fran. Mark Donovan steered you here deliberately right at this moment, he's outside

- 25:56saw you did? She's painted. She'll lift the stand trial. Why
- 26:00are you sure get that? I'll get name out of a pickle. I
- 26:03wonder Mark, Boys has nobody to run through now, so he'll stick to

- 28:06us again this time next week for another dramatic chapter in the Adventures of Frank
- 28:11race, Art Gilmore speaking, this is a Brussel's production. Welcome back.
- 28:55Well, this is someone interesting episode. I don't know this uh particular program
- 29:00would have been made if it had been a network shown having to go through
- 29:07the network process as it dealt with the topic of divorce and I think in
- 29:14a very sensitive way as they took a look at this, you know,
- 29:23these tragic situations that had occurred. This episode, of course, was set
- 29:30before the liberalization of so many divorce laws meet it easier to divorce in most
- 29:37states. But you'll hear a lot of Golden Age references to going to Reno
- 29:42or to Las Vegas, which was particularly noted for offering the quickie divorces.
- 29:51But as they say, episode illustrates quick was not always painless. Daniels shares
- 29:59a note over on Facebook notes that there that there's a new Father Brown TV
- 30:04series running in Britain on BBC one, Mark Williams playing Father Brown. Looks
- 30:10like they've updated some stories to the modern day with some new stories as well.
- 30:15Hopefully BBC America will pick this up. I would love to learn from
- 30:19our UK listeners what their thoughts on the show are. Right, I have
- 30:27to admit that I am always a bit leery of some of the more modern
- 30:33day adaptations. It's particularly noteworthy with Father Brown. He's definitely not the type
- 30:41of character end up in popular modern detective fiction, with a very distinct outlook
- 30:48and a personality that's us at times politically and correct. I'm hopeful that they
- 30:53did not obliterate that, but I would love to hear from listeners, and
- 31:00I will try and get definitely to try and take a look at the series.
- 31:04It becomes more available in the US, either on DVD or perhaps who
- 31:10knows, it may be on Mystery Masterpiece. And even though I don't get
- 31:15regular or television to the house, they have those the ones they play on
- 31:19Mystery on their website for a while. So all right, well that'll do
- 31:26it for today. We will be back tomorrow with an episode of A Life
- 31:30in Your Hands, and then join us back here next Monday for another adventure
- 31:33Frank Race. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen A right
