- 1:36now it's time for today's episode of Pat Noovack for Hire. This one is
- 1:41called Wendy Morris, So let's take a lesson God Novay. Well him sure
- 2:16unpack Nova for Ohio. That's what the sign out in front of my office
- 2:38says. Pat Novak for Hire it's up there and block letters, but down
- 2:45on the waterfront and San Francisco, good printing doesn't mean a thing. You
- 2:49get that on the death certificate. If you're trying to make a living John
- 2:53here, you're not going to have a new standing in the community except in
- 2:57a police lineup. I read for bats and do anything else that goes with
- 3:01a weak will and a strong stomach. It's not all bad. Once in
- 3:06a while, something happens. It makes you feel good for a moment,
- 3:12like remembering somebody get kissed a long time ago. But most of the time
- 3:16you buy your beard a hard way. So much all right, because most
- 3:21people learned to fall in love with a dollar bill and forget about trouble,
- 3:25and everything sounds all right. But sometimes it isn't like saying happy newly hear
- 3:30to a lifer. I found that out Wednesday night. I was sitting in
- 3:35the office with a sports page, reading about those big tears that Washington Senators
- 3:39were setting, and I saw Crockett oat him for the first time. He
- 3:44was a big, red faced guy, and Levings stood out in the station
- 3:46and made a pattern as if he slept on an alligator bag instead of a
- 3:49pillow. He walked over to the desk instead of to get quiet and a
- 3:53loud voice. I want to talk to humist to Novak ahead, pile of
- 3:58a lead. I don't even got him. You've heard of crocodile him.
- 4:00I don't get around tell me about it. I'm a lawyer. I want
- 4:03you to watch a client for me. The name is Wenda Morris. If
- 4:06you hard to watch, you get upshot eyes just looking at her. He
- 4:10drinks a little? What's a little? How should I answer? That's the
- 4:13way you like a plaint of court? What's a little? Od him your
- 4:15GPS? So you'll leave it there. You can make a quarter Jim disappear
- 4:18while anybody else is looking for the corps school. What am I supposed to
- 4:21do? Hide the bottle with a no bank a full girl? Not?
- 4:25If this couldn't do that, I'm afraid this is more serious. It involves
- 4:29her husband. Let her take a drink and lose him. It'll save your
- 4:31money. It involved her husband, or if somebody's supposed to be your husband,
- 4:35right, he's got a bad memory. Very well, say girl for
- 4:39Novak. Five years ago she married a man but the name of Stanley Morris.
- 4:43Immediately after it he went into the uniforms. You make this stuff.
- 4:46It's she's been gone over since until a month ago, spend most of that
- 4:48time overseas the rest of the government hospital. You know now that he's back,
- 4:54something very peculiar has happened. I don't think the man is a husband.
- 4:58That's a hard part to play. He got any theory. I think
- 5:00she suspects too. I don't know why I feel that way. He seems
- 5:04to have picked up where he left talk. He knows everything about it right,
- 5:08seems normal. But I'm sure the man is an impact lord god to
- 5:11find a corner and patch up that story. You can't get that near sighted
- 5:14on five years booze, You don't understand it's novak. He was seriously injured.
- 5:18That makes that identification hide. You think Stanley Morris is dead. I
- 5:23think you guys heading her along the line and this man took his place.
- 5:26That's a lot of trouble just to stare aboard the room with a boozie Normalf.
- 5:29He can shirt with someone else on her money. That's why I want
- 5:32you to watch her, particularly tonight. Quieter at is Stanley full of temper.
- 5:36It's been leading up to this he wants her to go to a gambling
- 5:40club, and I know he's too friendly with the owner of the club.
- 5:43I want you to go along as a friend. I look, mister,
- 5:45I wouldn't go as her friend to a masquerade ball. If you're making it
- 5:47deal, make it out in the open, do it your own way,
- 5:49Novak. It's three hundred dollars ORNs anything way you can. Yeah, there's
- 5:53the club he'll take you. Just pick her up a fish, a bread.
- 5:57Just you know about him, you understand Jims. In fact, that's
- 6:00the only risk you run. I told her she drinks most of the time.
- 6:03When she doesn't do the patchb some cheese instead, I don't do any
- 6:10good. It's not the flavor she likes her. So no, that is
- 6:13the punch. The night one old Tom walked out of there, I knew
- 6:28he was the kind of a gun to put the wolf at your door if
- 6:30we could get one wholesale. On the way up the pier, he stopped
- 6:32and looked out at the bay as if he intended to do away with it
- 6:35before morning, and then he turned and disappeared around the corner. I sat
- 6:42there for a while, I went over his story. I was sure it
- 6:44wouldn't hold any more water than i'd gross the holes, but I had nowhere
- 6:46at checking. Finally, about seven o'clock I closed the office and I went
- 6:50by the address he gave me. It was a modernistic apartment up on Telegraph
- 6:55Till for one of those places where they let a guy out of the basement
- 6:58long enough to think murals on the front. This one had a guy waving
- 7:01a blond wave in front of a tin o monk named Fause. One day
- 7:05More's apartment was up on the second floor, and when I rang the butter,
- 7:11she opened the door with the NINEX. Was emotional, like a cat
- 7:14getting ready to eat it's young. Obviously right away what Odin was talking about.
- 7:20You ever build a house, you watch somebody like her in the blueprints
- 7:25leaned against the doorway, and she was wearing a take the evening garnment.
- 7:29I supposed to let you know that nature had given her a square or she
- 7:32didn't say anything at first. She just kept fingering her glass and looking at
- 7:35you as a few news who was full of gin and comfort. It makes
- 7:41a nice rattle, are yoused to know that? Yeah? I rattled too,
- 7:44and me in, Oh no, that's you do are y all paid
- 7:50to like me? Will it drink help me to know that? Yeah,
- 7:55I'll get Let me talk at Teather. He said you got first. It's
- 8:00you mentioned them talk up things for related there's sole confession with the medical profession
- 8:03to your husband. Where I thought that was a problem. Sounds poring.
- 8:07There must be a way to spot old husband. Oh, I wouldn't know.
- 8:11Do you think Daniel Norris is dead? I don't know much. You
- 8:13know that you carry it away as long as i'm face No, Stanley,
- 8:18there's no bargain. I don't know. I suppose I compuse the hangover with
- 8:22love about as lively as a dish rag in a steam bag. It doesn't
- 8:28make any difference now to know that I'm frightened. It's got to help him
- 8:31for three hundred dollars, that's all. Where is this gramblings joy a Hungary
- 8:35boulevard. It's called the mother Load. The sense of humor belongs to Frankie
- 8:39Famine. He's funny enough to deal with, Stanley. I don't know.
- 8:43Danny's been out there every night for two weeks now. He's forcing me to
- 8:46go. There must be a reason. That must be a reason for what
- 8:50don't chempt his family. Isn't you know that? My husband? I've never
- 8:56heard of you. Those rank He's got me worried, he's offended. What
- 9:00is he good? A trick? My husband is doing stand. We don't
- 9:05know anybody well enough to take him with us. You don't have to feel
- 9:09a burden all taken as you welling out that lead. Now looks mister on
- 9:11here in a straight deal, cash and kerry, and you'll cut it through
- 9:13from now on that mouth your's cost. You do look better with your lips
- 9:18turned in, all right. If you're liking it, goes, I'll have
- 9:22to make another reservation. Hand me the yeah, yeah, let's go,
- 9:33Wendy, you find that job. I hope they got a good price for
- 9:48my head, because when I started down, shoulder blades are the best I
- 9:50could do for height. I rolled over once and then I stretched out on
- 9:54the floor as heard as a piece of chillings. I'm in the theater's seat.
- 9:58I don't know how long I actually sed that woman in the so must
- 10:01have been about an hour. When the phone began to ring. I tried
- 10:03to get up once or twice, but I couldn't get a box car off
- 10:07my chest, and the phone kept ringing like a piece of crystal in a
- 10:09hailstorm. I finally made a ladder out of my knees and got to the
- 10:13phone. Yeah, how's your head a little right? What's on your mind?
- 10:20Something's gone wrong? I have to meet you, not at these prices.
- 10:22I just got a message from Crocododum. I'm leaving now. I want
- 10:26you to meet me in room three fourteen of the Gallbery Hotel. Where is
- 10:30it a third great trapped on Paul Street. It's important. Will you come?
- 10:33Yeah? And I'm sorry about your head. I have to r wait
- 10:39till I get that. You're gonna rub one of your own. She was
- 10:50right about that hotel. In a good season, they couldn't have drawn chance
- 10:54in mind. I got there about a quarter to ten. I rode up
- 10:58to room three four There was nobody there. Oh. I sat down and
- 11:03started to wait. The floor was quiet, except down at the end of
- 11:07the hall. Somebody was playing a phonograph record. The music was thin but
- 11:11loud, and I knew it with old records, a way back when this
- 11:15bird Bits was a man instead of a memory. It stopped after a while
- 11:18and I looked at my watch It was after ten, so I left the
- 11:22hotel and I went out to the gambling joint. I toured the room,
- 11:26but I couldn't find Wendy or stand. I got a guy at the window
- 11:28and he remembered somebody like Wendy, so I asked about it. He just
- 11:33pointed over at Frankie Fanon's office and went on making change. I crossed over
- 11:37and knocked at the door. The guy that opened it had a face like
- 11:43three pounds of warm putty. It was moist and thinking he got the idea.
- 11:48They put the color in with a spray again and if his heart was
- 11:50made of the same stuff, they drained the oil out first. Yeah,
- 11:54my name's Novak, who was arguing, I want to talk to you.
- 11:58Yeah, where's Wendy Morris? I don't know she was in here tonight.
- 12:03It's a jail term. I don't follow women home. Am I supposed to
- 12:05buy that? Look, Junior, I don't care whether you live or die.
- 12:09I haven't seen her. How about her husband? He owes me gough
- 12:11what else? Ask his wife? He said, I owe you to me.
- 12:16I don't know what you're doing here, but you'd better make your point.
- 12:18Thank I lesk fanon if you've got a party. I don't want to
- 12:20blow out the candles, but I want some answers. You know she got
- 12:22boosted in here tonight. Why I brought her in for word games? I
- 12:26told her if her husband didn't square his fill, I'd working at a Hamburger.
- 12:30Now. She offered to bring the funds. And that's all the tough
- 12:33you get. Mister, kick the girl on your way out. I need
- 12:37the money. Come in, shows up and tell me which one's Novak?
- 12:43I am? What's on your mind? The other guy's lucky. I'm Craig
- 12:46mumhamicide. Where's hellman? He's got a mouthful of canary novak. That's right.
- 12:50I just left room three fourteen of the Galborth Hotel. So today two
- 12:54of us made it. Then the girl didn't. No Vaki's trying to tell
- 12:58you, Wendy Morris's how do you know she's dead? The only reason cops
- 13:01through? You want to see your novak? No, she was better alive.
- 13:05Come on down anyway. Maybe I didn't try hard enough. When I
- 13:18walked out of there, I felt like a voice teacher with adenoids. Whoever
- 13:20Craig was, he was smart and he tagged all the bases because as we
- 13:24moved through the lobby emotion to me and the desk clerk nodded. Well.
- 13:28I didn't worry about that desk clerk because he hadn't said no for years.
- 13:33But when we got to the room three fourteen, I needed tena passage.
- 13:37There were three or four Craig's band grouped along a dim hall like dirty shadows,
- 13:39and inside Wendy Morris was stetched out looking in the wrong direction. There
- 13:45was a white sheet draped over and I wondered where the hotel had borrowed that,
- 13:48But Craig wanted to talk. You must have had a big beef novak.
- 13:52Sorry, we were friends. Oh but that was fun. I was
- 13:54supposed to meet her here. She didn't show. The desk clerk says she
- 13:56did not while I was here. I was in that game when joined by
- 14:00the best. Clerk says, you asked about Wendy Morris, then you came
- 14:01up here and killed her. That's the way. I'm going to a book.
- 14:03Check on her husband. You can fit him in near the top of
- 14:05the list. She got one. There's a lot of blonde there to keep
- 14:09indoors. Huh. Good blondes run like salmon. Wait a minute, Craig,
- 14:13give me a cheat. Well, well, Creig, you better not
- 14:18book me for Wendy Morris. If you do, you'll mix up all we're
- 14:20on duty angels. Because somebody killed the wrong woman. This isn't Wendy Morris.
- 14:24You must be wrong. Or how does anybody know? They look different,
- 14:26they got different personalities. Take your pick, Craig, but somebody got
- 14:28the wrong woman. Take another look. I don't need another with Wendy.
- 14:31The first looks for names and faces. Yeah, if you take a second
- 14:33look, mistress for love. I guess Craig likes to pack is dead because
- 14:48when he found out the woman on the floor was somebody else, he started
- 14:52to shake a little in his mouth hung open like a broken screen door.
- 14:56I didn't blame him much. I tried to think back and piece it together,
- 15:00but it wouldn't work out. It almost made sense, like the broken
- 15:03phrases of an old conversation, but not enough of it came back, and
- 15:07it was still something missing. What happened to Wendy Morris? And how about
- 15:11this girl on the floor? Where did she get her drag with heaven?
- 15:15I looked down at her again. She was pretty if you like quiet girls.
- 15:18She had a vacant look in her eyes, as if the brains had
- 15:22checked out without letting her know, and the color was starting to leave her
- 15:24face. The light was bad and he had to look close to see her
- 15:28skin. There were little splotches of pink and the rest was white, like
- 15:33stimps that hadn't been boiled long enough. Craig was worried, and that's something
- 15:37he couldn't hide. I don't know, Craig. We didn't need her soon
- 15:39enough to know. You should have checked the hotel register, says Wendy March.
- 15:43Who'll reddit for you? How you're tough, Craig. How about you
- 15:48got the whino sked stuff. Keep on talking, I'll get you some help.
- 15:56Come on in. He likes to make a safety I'm the bed,
- 16:00no back. How'd you get your boys, Craig, They look tired.
- 16:03I'm the bed, No back, all right, Joe, take your time.
- 16:07Yeah. Another to hold his head back against the bed. Where's Wendy
- 16:12Morris? No back? I don't know, Copper. You sure you're from
- 16:18homicide so it's against the law. Don't tell anybody. I'll make a statement.
- 16:23No back, yeah, here's a statement about you, Craig. We'll
- 16:29find out down Tom, you can save some teeth. Where's the other girl?
- 16:34I don't know? Hold him up? Yeah, where's Wendy Morris?
- 16:37Craig, you can go put his head against the bed. It's for exercise
- 16:48now, Craig, all right, he's not a season passed. We don't
- 16:52have to hang on to him. Craig's boys left me hanging on the foot
- 17:14of the bed with somebody's dirty call and an old garter the maid forget to
- 17:18pick up. Last month, I felt my way down of the lobby and
- 17:22into the street. Most of the time. One question kept going through my
- 17:26mind. Craig was going to run me in before. Why had he changed
- 17:30his mind? So I found out when I started to turn the corner.
- 17:34Craig had a tail on me, and he was real hard to spot,
- 17:37like a red nash at the top of the mark. He moved out from
- 17:41under a light near the pool room on the corner, and I watched him
- 17:44in the windows as we walked along. After a while, I quit worrying
- 17:48about him because I knew in a pinch he couldn't follow a conversation with a
- 17:51printed form. So I had a lot of ground to cover, so I
- 17:53looked up jack O Madigan. He's a good guy, and he was a
- 17:57smart one too. He found out if your eyes get red enough, you
- 18:00don't need rose colored glasses. I finally found them at the cafe house,
- 18:04as tight as a tennis racket in the rain. God ress, g marry,
- 18:10gentlemen. Let nothing you dismay some belated Christmas carols. Patchy, the
- 18:18piano player, Quitch, and everybody else dropped out show. I'm doing it
- 18:22a cappella by myself, all right, Jacko. Christmas eluded me, Patsy.
- 18:26I got up through Christmas Eve, and then I seem to have missed
- 18:30Christmas entirely. Did they hold it this year? Well, it wouldn't happen
- 18:34if you get up in the morning. I refuse to get up early,
- 18:37Patsy. I refuse to get up in the morning until the streets have been
- 18:41made. The only things that should be around at that hour are peasants and
- 18:45a bunch of random views. Chaco with a listen. I'm in trouble.
- 18:49I'm not surprised because you're a counterfeit, Patsy. You're a piece of plate
- 18:53in a room full of stirring. You're like some of the rest of these
- 18:56people, running around in a hurry play, just plunging into anything. Look
- 19:02at the papers. Some people have spent years shooting a rocket one hundred and
- 19:07ten miles into the air. Watch the youth, Will you listen? Fotch
- 19:11the use? When you get one hundred and ten miles up, all you
- 19:15can do is turn around and come on back down again. We're killing time
- 19:19one hundred and ten miles in the air instead of learning to spend it down
- 19:23here. All right, Oh, it's depressing Petsy running around in a frenzy
- 19:29like a rooster in a barnyard full of ducks. I'm ready to take to
- 19:33drink. Are you all through? Jackal? Yes? Humanity is a tough
- 19:37life. What kind of trouble? I bought a murder wrap for three hundred
- 19:41bucks. If it's a bargain, why complain? Who's dead? I don't
- 19:45know who she is? Homicide foundering a hotel on Powell Street. I tagged
- 19:48by before the murder serves her Right, if I were a woman, I
- 19:52wouldn't trust you in the middle of Stamford Stadium with eighty thousand people. It
- 19:56was the wrong woman. Who was supposed to be a gowning Wendy Morris,
- 19:59but she didn't show that was shrewd of her. I was hired by a
- 20:02lawyer named Crocodile him to watch her. Why she's a dipso she must have
- 20:07some faults. Odum suspects her husband. He was in uniform, and now
- 20:10that he's back, Odum figures he's a fraud out for the girl's money.
- 20:14Can't the girl tell the difference? This is not sure. I don't think
- 20:18she was observing. Now, look, this is a big story, Jacko.
- 20:19I can't fill in all the holes. You got to help me.
- 20:22I want you to check on crocodile Er money. I need some money.
- 20:25Oh, you'll booze it away and I'll hurry, Jacko. If you need
- 20:26money, got a job. I can't go to work, Patchy. I'm
- 20:30a victim of my own conscience. I'm stuck with a dilemma. I'm willing
- 20:36to go to work, but I work too cheaply, and on the other
- 20:38hand, I'll not support slave labor, so it's morally impossible for me to
- 20:45go to work. Good Night, lover. It was about eleven thirty when
- 20:56I left Jocko and the two beatings begin to catch it up with me.
- 21:00I had enough headache to pass out through a Bay Meadows crowd on a bad
- 21:03day. The tail behind me again to look tired, so I dropped by
- 21:07headquarters to give him a rest. I asked for the head of homicide,
- 21:10but the desk told me that Helman was on his honeymoon, and they kind
- 21:12of laughed when they said it, as if they thought he'd got the girl.
- 21:15There on a bench warrant all laid done at headquarters was identified the dead
- 21:19woman. Her name was Emily van Kirk, and she had no record.
- 21:23I dropped by the hotel and the first break showed down there. The desk
- 21:27Kerk knew about Emily van Kirk. He'd mixed the rooms up and he'd put
- 21:30Wendy in the wrong one. That meant that maybe she was at the hotel
- 21:34after all. It also meant that Emily was in the clear. She was
- 21:37just a girl on her way to Seattle, and she got a longer ride
- 21:41than she paid for. I called Wendy's but I couldn't get an answer,
- 21:45so I got by my place to wait for Jocko. Stanley Morris was there
- 21:48chewing his fingernails. When I walked in, he was up to the wristwatch.
- 21:51Said no, that question my wife. You're hiding her. He's good
- 21:53enough to hide. But this isn't the ninth Where is she? She must
- 21:56have gone to you after that hotel. How do you know she was it?
- 21:57Did you drop by two? Does that make any differs a difference for
- 22:00me? We're all out of phones. Now. Tell me about that hotel.
- 22:04Cocket Otem told me to come there. Why, I don't know.
- 22:08I was supposed to be there ten thirty. It was some kind of a
- 22:11crazy scheme. It was a dead girl. Next up in one. Sorry
- 22:14it wasn't. Wendy put them tried to break up this marriage. I wish
- 22:18he had. You don't know her the way I do. She's a cold
- 22:22blooded animal, the only cold blooded animal that doesn't there for building a case.
- 22:27I don't know whatever I suppose you would. There's a certain localized beauty
- 22:32you would go for, but nobody else would have her. Find out what
- 22:34she is? A puff atter with a good figure. We're good company.
- 22:41Somebody's coming in the door, Washington. There goes the light stand that he
- 23:00couldn't have died any faster with a priority. I got to the door and
- 23:03drew on the light switch, but whoever it was had gone and the hall
- 23:06was dark. When I got back to Stan, he was lying there like
- 23:08a well trained sponge. He wasn't a good enough guy to bleed in the
- 23:12living room, so I dragged him into the kitchen and left for the back
- 23:15way. I had to get word to Jocko's, so I left the message
- 23:18at his place, telling him to get in touch with me At Wendy's.
- 23:22I went up there to sit on her door step and a wait. If
- 23:25it took all night, I wasn't gonna freeze, though, because she opened
- 23:29the door as soon as I knocked. She was still wearing that crape down
- 23:33and she was yawning and stretching her arms. Oh you might not want to
- 23:38bring her home to mother, but you'd want to start anyway. Do you
- 23:41always look at grybin this way, Patsy, I feel like ease, And
- 23:45I'll bet you get a kitchen full of apples. Do I argue or come
- 23:47in? You may argue, but do it in here. When'd you get
- 23:51back? Why? Somebody just killed Stan? If you're sure, O,
- 23:53the drinks are on me. He didn't like you eat it with the eaven
- 23:56if he had anything to stalk with. Don't have a malley, Patsy.
- 23:59Look, lady, I'm nursing a murder rap and I need some answers with
- 24:02Stanaphony. He's the same guy I'm marry. If that's what you mean?
- 24:04What sure? Or four hours ago? I wanted an answer? Then?
- 24:07What time? You're too far ahead? Patsy, Come to a trump and
- 24:11have a drink. Lady, has anybody ever told you about a slow burn?
- 24:15I got one now I'll bet you have, darling. Oh, this
- 24:18room isn't big enough for games. Baby, give me a Patsy. We'll
- 24:23find a guy with a bang of wild oats. Stop shadow boxing, all
- 24:30right, baby? H See that's what makes the poor so happy. They
- 24:40don't have phones. Yeah, betchy, this is Joko. What'd you find
- 24:45out Crockey Otum is in love with Wendy Morrish? Does they go both ways?
- 24:49A different way of exchange? I got something else too, I will
- 24:55is a big temptation. Go ahead. If she bows out, all the
- 24:59dome goes to a Maybe the guy is a fraud. Oh he's going to
- 25:03have it straightened off. What else? The funny part of the will.
- 25:07If they're both dead, all the dough goes to Crockett Otum. You better
- 25:11see him in a hurry. Oh, that doesn't make sense. If he
- 25:15killed her and got all that dough, it had cost him that much to
- 25:17get another like her. Maybe not. You haven't seen her, Jacko.
- 25:19He wouldn't pass that up. She's nice and speedy. Oh, I can
- 25:22explain that. When you're over fifty. You don't mind the speed. It's
- 25:26the free wheeling you hate to think about. When Jacko hung up, I
- 25:38knew we had a good pair of seats. That story of stance finally made
- 25:42sense. It was only one reason why he could have been called there at
- 25:45ten thirty, and for the first time I tumbled why Craig had let me
- 25:48go back in that hotel room, everything was right in place, like a
- 25:51mixed master in a bride kitchen. I dropped my headquarters and left a note,
- 25:55and then a girl and I ran into Craig down at the desk.
- 25:56I briefed him on what had happened, and we rode up to Odem's apartment.
- 26:00When we got to the living room, things turned stormy. Hello,
- 26:03Novac, it's too late to start a party. You're gonna like this one
- 26:07otum. That's right, darling, you'll love it. This is Craig some
- 26:08homicide. He wants you for murder. It doesn't sound right. Craig Novak's
- 26:12calling it to see him. I talked to stand before he died. He
- 26:15tipped your mid crocket. He couldn't chip a water glass. He was smart
- 26:18enough to know you sent for him. That's why he didn't show it.
- 26:21Ten thirty. You better have it than riding. No, I don't need
- 26:22it that way. I got Craig. He won't let you out that easy.
- 26:25What's he talking about, Craig, I'm aside. I'll shake him down
- 26:27too fast. You're with a walk him dead now, Craig, I let
- 26:30the note they know you killed a girl? Are you crazy Craig to come
- 26:33up here? I can't argue now. He's too lucky O him. I
- 26:34got all seven tonight, Craig, crocod Odum sold you bad good. He
- 26:37did everything wrong. Thanks. I'm gonna leave you, but don't let the
- 26:41bag get too hippy. Wait a minute, Craig, you're not gonna let
- 26:44me hang for this. If you won't, they burn in the states,
- 26:47Stay away from that door, Craig. Sorry, Otem, you jumped me
- 26:49in, but I got fat cards. I want to see you play him
- 26:52alone. Can you get by this gun? I'll make a try. Hang
- 26:56on your sin. You a hand? No, you anything to help you
- 27:06die here? How's old him? He'll keep Yeah. I'm sorry, Novak,
- 27:18what they do wrong? Everything, but mostly when you let me go
- 27:23up in that hotel room. Yeah, I should have pinched you then.
- 27:29I mucha send a hearted guy. You're a bum, Craig. I can
- 27:33move you down a step lower. Even you're a liar. I checked you're
- 27:36not working for the city. They never heard of you downtown. I'm not
- 27:41gonna make it, Novak. Lay my head down, Yeah, how about
- 27:48it down easy? Goodbye, Craig. I hope you have a long night.
- 28:19If Craig made the morning, he had to cheat. They patched up
- 28:23Odam and got most of the story out of him. Jocko was right.
- 28:27Odum got tired of chasing the girl and went after the money instead. He
- 28:32drummed up that phony story to Planter reason for a quarrel, and then he
- 28:36tried to pay it off in that hotel room. He offered a cut to
- 28:38Craig, for the heavy duty work. Wendy was supposed to show up at
- 28:42ten fifteen Craig could kill her and wait. When Stan showed up at ten
- 28:47thirty, Craig was supposed to stage a fight and kill him. That way
- 28:51he'd be in the clear, and so would Odim. They'd say it was
- 28:53a husband and wife quarrel, and Craig had a phony shield to back him
- 28:57up. Dreamed up that story about being a cop, but the whole scheme
- 29:03went. Hey, why when the desk clerk mixed up the rooms, Craig
- 29:06killed the wrong woman and Stan got there late. That's why he got scared
- 29:10when it turned out to be somebody else, so he let me go.
- 29:12Odum was afraid that Stan had showed up and knew the story, so he
- 29:17had a ticket right away. The guy who telled me was handy for that.
- 29:22When did I first tumble something wrong? When I was sure, the
- 29:26crocoddled him and told a lie. He said the girl was a dipso,
- 29:30but when I got there, she was drinking soda with her whiskey, and
- 29:33a good dipso won't waste that much time. Well, it works out all
- 29:38right. Helman was on his honeymoon, so he didn't have any questions all,
- 29:45but his wife did. Vaca Hire was previously released by Amy Lee,
- 31:07the American Broadcasting Company or listeners in the United States and rebroadcast for our men
- 31:11and women overseas. This is the United States Arm Forces Radio Service, the
- 31:17Voice of Information and Education. Welcome back. Well, here we see an
- 31:52example of handling an absent actor. The only flaw on this is that you
- 32:00had two bodies drop and no actual police showed up on the scene because the
- 32:06one that they portrayed was a fake policeman, which you know, I think
- 32:09obvious reasons that they did that that way, rather than making him a crooked
- 32:14policeman, because even with a pat Novak for hire, there were limits to
- 32:19how bad you can make the police look. But that does leave a bit
- 32:22of a plot hole here. Well, now we do have an email or
- 32:27a voicemail. I've been meaning to play this for a few days. This
- 32:30is from Deana. She sent this back on June twenty third, so let's
- 32:36go ahead and take a lesson. Hi, this is Diane Nicole. I've
- 32:39enjoyed your show so much, Adam, and I'm a little late though in
- 32:44listening to them, and I just wanted to answer the pronunciation of the composer
- 32:51of the music from Johnny Dollar Steam. It's Dmitri Shostakovich. Someone has probably
- 32:57already told you because it's been a while, but just in case, I
- 33:00thought, I thought I would call love your show. Thanks bye, Thanks
- 33:05so much for the voicemail. I do appreciate it and apologize it took me
- 33:09so long to get to it on the show. This was, of course
- 33:15thee the our opening theme, which is actually taken from the closing of many
- 33:20of the Armed Forces Radio Services versions of pat Novak for Hire. And for
- 33:24some reason I just struggled with pronouncing this name correctly. But that is the
- 33:30name. For those of you who are wondering where the opening theme comes,
- 33:35it comes from pat Novak for Hire and it's by this composer. And I
- 33:37appreciate you taking the time to call, and you can leave your own voicemails
- 33:43at two eight no one one bright D that's too eight no one one four
- 33:46seven eight three and show related comments are the main thing we'd like to receive
- 33:52there for technical issues things like that email still works best. Well, that
- 33:57will do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with the adventures of
- 34:01Philip Marlow, and then be sure and listen to us again next Tuesday for
- 34:07another episode of Pat Novak for Hire. In the meantime, send your comments
