[upbeat rock music] Now. Now. Now, now, Steve Now, Steve. [upbeat rock music] Good day, evening,
• 0:16
time of the day you're listening to our fine podcast. People, how's it going? Do you think there's ever more than two people listening at any one time? [laughs] Mm. Whoa. All likelihood is no. Whoa, that's deep.
• 0:29
Hey, everybody. It's Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 130 for crying out loud. I can't believe we haven't bled every listener off we've ever had by now. Right, right.
• 0:38
But thanks for supporting us with your ear holes and whatnot. Uh, JK... Hey, wait a second. First of all, we're in the- Hello... we're in the new... Hey, there's JK over there.
• 0:48
We're in the new, well, not quite complete studio. Yes, this is shaking off the rust of our nomadic adventures- Yeah... with, uh- Yes, yes.
• 0:57
We spent some We're, we're running off a big-ass red extension cord at this point. But, uh- I've got my little Matt Gates again. He's back. Punch him in, punch him in the face. Punch him in the face. Twin. Twin.
• 1:06
Punch him in the face. Punch him in the face. If you keep getting this noise- Punch him in the face... this is me. All right. So this is officially the podcastmke.org studio. This is no longer part of the bike shop.
• 1:14
This is for people in Milwaukee to come and do shows and, you know, produce them here and stuff. Stuff. And such. We have all the gear. We got all the good stuff. Hey, thanks to our sponsor, podcastmke.org.
• 1:30
All right- Oh... as I was getting into it before, though, JK to my right. Hello. Hello. Mr. Tony Burger to my left. Hey there. And one big old football split in the uprights right there, Mr. Sam McMahon. Howdy.
• 1:42
How's it going over there? Good. Good. Thank you. Mm-hmm. We... Well, Sam was... Tony made Sam come, I think, or something. I was looking for something to do after Spanish class. Oh, there you go.
• 1:53
How's ""La escuela de España"" fucking I don't know. Whatever. How's that going? [laughs] Bien. Bien. A donde esta- Did, did we talk about your crazy motorcycle ride- Love to... you're planning last podcast?
• 2:06
Eh, don't think we did. Uh, we mentioned it, but- We touched on it... broad stroke it because I, it's a, it's a grand adventure if indeed it can be pulled off with- And-... current state of affairs of world bullshittery.
• 2:17
And- Yeah, I've been tracking that.
• 2:19
But, uh, leave, uh, 1st of January, and, uh, trailering my motorcycle down to San Diego, where I'll jump on that sucker, ride it through Baja until I can get the ferry to the Mexican mainland, follow Mexico and the western border, um, down through, uh, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras.
• 2:40
Nicaragua. Am I threatening you? [laughs] Costa Rica, Panama. I got a, a f- person lined up to take me on a ferry around the Darien Gap. That'll take- Ah, that, that's one of the big challenges- Yeah...
• 2:52
down there, isn't it? That's a big one. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. It takes about four days. Probably cost me a pretty penny. I, I did watch Long Way Up, and I was like- Yeah... "Yeah, they, they"- I've not seen that.
• 2:58
Oh, it's worth watching. Uh- Especially- It's a four-day ferry ride? No. Yeah, it stops at an island for a day and- Oh, wow. [laughs] Yeah, it's, it's a ways. It goes all the way from Panama- Bring the Dramamine...
• 3:09
to, to, uh, Colombia, which I'll get dropped off in Colombia, and I'll continue on through the western coast of South America. Um, Ecuador,
• 3:19
I'll hit Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, and ultimately the goal is to try to get to the bottom, but in three months I really don't know if that's gonna happen because, one, I'm gonna volunteer with Motorrad Angels, which provides, uh, medical supplies, equipment, and sometimes even professionals, like literally throw a doctor on the back of your motorcycle and- [laughs]...
• 3:43
tote him up into the mountains. Wow, that's pretty rad. [laughs] Isn't that a great idea? Yeah. So you're, so you're gonna use your bike to- Yeah... facilitate this, uh- Yeah.
• 3:50
And I'll, I'll volunteer wherever they need me. I don't really care... really? Uh, they got a, they're represented in, like, 37 countries or something. So that's big.
• 3:59
You know, spending a decent amount of time in Baja is big. I, I've always wanted to do that. And then the biggest part is Julie will meet me for probably a month, I hope, uh- Close...
• 4:09
tentatively Costa Rica, you know, 1st of February or so. And, uh, we'll rent a beach house and hang out. But all in all, the trip will take about three months.
• 4:18
I bought a, uh, specific motorcycle for it, a older Suzuki V-Strom. Uh, fairly inexpensive to purchase. Roughly the cost that it'll cost me to ship it home is what I paid for it, so.
• 4:31
Right, so you're not gonna ship it home, I imagine. [laughs] Yeah. Uh, ult- ultimately the plan will be to sell it for pennies when I get to wherever I'm getting to- [laughs]...
• 4:39
and then fly home or, I mean- I, I almost think that would be a good service because there's lots of people going north to south, and there are people going south to north. Yeah.
• 4:47
And if you could go down there and there was a market for used bikes like that that had just come from the north, so obviously it's battle proven- Yeah... to then rent it or sell it to somebody going the other direction.
• 4:59
Yeah. I, that's a no-brainer. Would you buy a bike from a local guy you don't know or from somebody that just rode, you know, whatever, 10,000 miles or whatever it is- Yeah... website...
• 5:08
on a bike that made it and is still running well and it's, like, sorted and all that stuff? Yeah. That's a no-brainer. I do plan on hitting the Pan American Highway website as well as Horizons Unlimited to- Been on it...
• 5:18
to, uh, present just that. Uh, anybody that wants to do this ride the opposite direction, you know, give me some money, take my bike. I'll give you- [laughs] Give me money.
• 5:28
I'll give you b- I'll give you your money back when you get to my house, honestly. I, I just- Oh, right on. Yeah, I don't even want rats. It's like a, a f- a, a f- a ferry service or what do you call it? Yeah.
• 5:38
I don't, I, I, you know, I don't plan on keeping the bike. I have other bikes to ride, and, uh, this one is a tool for the job, so. Right on.
• 5:44
Oh, so that idea of kinda ferrying the bike reminds me of the coolest job I ever heard of. My dad had it.
• 5:52
He would run Mercedes 300 SL Gullwings from the Port of Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, where the dealer was, and they'd drive them that whole way. Ooh. [laughs] I believe they were good for at least 155.
• 6:07
Would be surprised if they didn't tax that at some- But I just thought, what a great job. You go to LA, you pick up a Mercedes, and you drive it to the dealership. Uh That sounds lovely. Doesn't it?
• 6:17
[laughs] Oh, that sounds like fun. Yeah. And especially in Laos, they're so iconic. I mean- Yeah...
• 6:23
back then they didn't have any clue what it was gonna become probably, just like another, you know- Yep, another Mercedes... German to- Another German car. Right.
• 6:28
They were, I think they were decent for the day, but they weren't like, "Oh, my God, it's one of the most iconic cars of all time."
• 6:34
It's one of those ones that I think about if I were to go back in time and I could pick out a couple of cars to store- Right on...
• 6:40
that'd be, you know, that and there's a couple others out there that are just stupidly expensive. Well, yeah, I don't know. Hey, hey, everybody. We got a caller. Hey, welcome to the show, Mr. Caller. What's your name?
• 6:53
Can you tell us about that? Have you called in before? What's happening? Hmm. All right. I hear you knocking, but you can't come in. Hmm. Hmm. What is the wrong buttons? I don't know.
• 7:07
Everything is- We're in a new studio. Yeah, we're- This is- Hold on a sec there, sir. We are knocking off rust. Hmm. No, that's good. He just said, "This is good." I don't know what's going on here.
• 7:21
He doesn't know what's going on here. He's approaching the T with a great bit of apprehension. Hello, Dave? [laughs] Dave. What, what- Shit. Tr- Fu- Dave is here. Shit. But Dave's not here.
• 7:39
Man. And... None shall pass. You know what I can do? Give me a... I got a pencil here. Uh-huh. I can just call Dave back and bypass all this- Yeah... dumb fuckery here. I just have to write his number down.
• 7:56
You're writing on the, your brand-new bikepacking book. I know, this is true. Um- He was like, "What the shit?" So, so what now? I mean, he literally, like, took this out of plastic about, like, 10 minutes ago.
• 8:05
Dave, Dave, Dave can hear us, but, uh- [laughs] Oh, Dave can hear us. We cannot hear Dave? Why can Dave hear us? Why can't we hear Dave? This is bullshit. Dave. Thing, thing, thing, thing, thing.
• 8:13
Everything plugged in right? Um, as far as I know, I think everything's plugged in right. I don't know. Hmm. It's the same setup we've been using for how long now? Right. Right.
• 8:26
Moist is what he said of- Is it in all the way? "Is it all in all the way?" is what Tony just said. Shh. He heard it, what he said. [laughs] This is- Oh... kind of a fun game in a way. [laughs] I know.
• 8:41
So instead of mucking about with this, I will just, uh, call him direct because... Oh. 'Cause that's what we do around here. We roll with the punches. [laughs] She sent me one, two, three different phone numbers. Uh-huh.
• 9:00
Let's see if this works. I mean, come on. There we go. Hey. Nice. Hey. June. No one's listening. I, I'm in, I think. [laughs] Hello? Damn. Is it me you're looking for? [laughs] Hey, Dave. Hello. How are you?
• 9:18
It's been a long road. Well, I don't know. Some- something in our move must have been janked up, 'cause we couldn't... Uh, you could hear us, but we could not hear you. Yeah. Uh-huh. Well, well. Yeah.
• 9:29
Anyway, well, that's a little bit of a first day in the semi-new studio jitters. We're, we're- Well, you, you warned me. I [laughs] I, uh... Oh. Almost spilled my beer. That would be bad. Yeah. Uh, hey, everybody.
• 9:42
It's Dave Slabosky, in case you don't recognize the- Seely Dave... dulcet, dulcet tones of Seely Dave. Yeah. Yeah. So what, um- Uh...
• 9:51
what initially, I mean, just to jump right into it, unless you wanna get some pleasantries out of the way or whatever, but, uh,
• 9:59
I, I, I, I had seen the thing about the Cable, uh, pump track, and I'm like, "Oh, that's gotta be sweet." So I wanted to get the lowdown on the pump track. Yeah. Yeah.
• 10:11
So, um, if, if you go onto the, your Google machine and, and google concrete pump track, the first hit is gonna be the Monster Pump Track out in San Diego, and, and that's about it.
• 10:29
So, um, we, but we now have a concrete pump track up here in our- Oh... little town of Cable, Wisconsin, population 825 or whatever it is. Hmm. Um, and, uh, and it's all thanks to Scott, um, King of Cable.
• 10:48
Uh, that's his, uh, Instagram hashtag king, Scott King. Um, but if you wanna look him up on social, it's, it's @kingofcable on Instagram. And, uh- King of Cable. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 11:02
Well, his name's Scott King- It's like a-... and he lives in Cable. He was- I like it. That's good Smartest guy in the Sherpas. He was the maintenance guy at the famed, um...
• 11:11
For the, for the, uh, skateboard camp at the famed, uh, Lake Owen Camp, summer camp, which, which ran for about 27 or 30 years on Lake Owen.
• 11:22
His l- family owned this sports-focused camp, and you could go there and d- be trained, um, in whatever, like, your discipline was, whether it was skateboarding, BMX, like Nordic skiing, all, uh, you know- Boomeranging...
• 11:39
bi- bicycling, all kinds of stuff. They had like, even like Olympic level coaches and stuff like that at this tiny little, um, skate camp and other stuff.
• 11:48
But so Scott was the maintenance guy there, so he learned to ride, um, there. And then he built his own jump line and s- uh, snowboard park and stuff on his own property-
• 12:03
Which, um, if you wanna, and you can put links maybe in the show notes to this stuff that- Yeah...
• 12:09
I just had the, uh, the Dusty Dutchman, um, and Fruit Punch were up here and, uh, they, they went, they did a really nice video of some of the riding they did at, at Scott's.
• 12:20
The pump track wasn't open yet, but, um, but they did ride at Scott's. I got 'em hooked up on Scott's property, and then they rode at the Cable Bike Park, which Scott built last year.
• 12:32
So Scott has been, you know, doing that sort of riding for a long time, um, you know, gap jumps and whale tails and all that sort of stuff, but there was nowhere here to do it.
• 12:43
He'd built his own park at his own property, um, but he wanted there to be a place to do it for, for everybody else.
• 12:51
So he just brought up this, four years ago or so, he, like, approached the town of Cable and said, "Hey, I'd like to build a bike park here in the town of Cable Recreation Park, and, uh, pa- I'll have a dirt jump park and, uh, with some wood features, and then I'll build a concrete pump track."
• 13:11
And, and they said, "Well, ha- we know you work at Lake Oahe, but have you ever built a concrete pump track before?" And he said, "No." [laughs] Um- Oh...
• 13:20
but, um, but they trusted him, and he raised the money with the help of a couple other local people that are good at fundraising up here, and, um, raised the money and then invested, you know, got him and his, um, and his buddy, uh, Rasta, um, AKA Brandon, um, spent countless hours, uh, on this.
• 13:42
And, and that doesn't even count, like, all the millions of hours spent, like, trying to convince, you know, a town that, that this would be a good idea, getting the town to donate the property for it, all that sort of stuff.
• 13:54
So last year the, the bike park opened. The plan was always to have a concrete pump track and all-wheel-friendly pump track. I think that- Most pump tracks are- Right, and-... are dirt or asphalt.
• 14:04
Right, and they're high maintenance. Concrete is low maintenance. Right. You know, it can last- Yep... for whatever, 10 or more years, and not have to be ever maintained except to sweep the thing off now and again.
• 14:16
Right, and, and asphalt is, is less maintenance, but it's not as friendly to, like, skateboards or to scooters- Right... and stuff like that. Right, I'm- So- I have scars on my arm to prove that one. There's- [laughs]...
• 14:27
black marks on my right arm from crashing on asphalt, for sure. Right. Right. So he wanted to do it right. Um, and, and he did. So I, you know, I-
• 14:38
coincidentally, um, my, my daughter is dating, uh, a professional skateboarder from Milwaukee, Mitch Schmidt, who, you know, is the guy that runs the brand maintenance at, uh, at Four Seasons.
• 14:53
And, and Mitch went to skate camp with Scott and, and worked for Scott. So I had this sort of, like, weird...
• 15:02
Even though I'm not a big, you know, I haven't skateboarded since, you know, nose wheelies and, um, kryptonics- [laughs]... you know, wheels and- All right, Stacy Peralta. [laughs] You got, you got the resume there, sir.
• 15:16
You know? Right, Dogtown and Z-Boys days, you know. [laughs] Um, that was my, my experience with it, so I'm not a modern skater at all.
• 15:23
But, um, but my daughter's boyfriend is, and so I had this connection to Scott and, um, and he just went ahead and did all this on his own. I mean, CAMBA had nothing to do with it.
• 15:35
It was really just Scott's vision and, um, and it's turned out beautifully. That bike park is incredibly popular.
• 15:44
Um, it's, and it's progressive, so, you know, you can go there with your kid on a Strider bike, and your kid on a Strider bike's gonna have fun, and you can, you know, take the big log jump and stuff like that.
• 15:56
On the Strider, right. And- Yeah. Yeah, right. [laughs] I love taking my Strider somewhere. [laughs] Hey, look what, look what I didn't forget from the other place. [bell ringing] I was thinking about it.
• 16:06
I was like- Ah... "Goddamn." We're, we're- Are we at the top of the hill? We're at the- Are we at the top of the hill? We've suddenly approached the top of the hill. Yeah, we've become the top of the hill.
• 16:14
[laughs] Uh, J- JK brought our show beer, not necessarily the beer we're gonna finish the night with, but it... Tell us a little bit about the beer, JK. It's part of the Iron Maiden, uh, Trooper line. Of course it is.
• 16:27
Ah. It's the Sun and Steel Sake Lager- Ah... by Iron Maiden. I, I like it, and it's- It's-... kinda low boozahol, too. Yeah. Yeah, J- no, JK hit it perfect. It's old man Iron Maiden beer.
• 16:39
Yeah, it's Iron Ma- Iron Maiden dad beer. I mean, it's dad beer. Yeah. Dad beer? Iron Maiden dad beer. It's not old man beer. It's like, it's, it's- It's dad beer... it's like, so it's, you know- Dad...
• 16:46
okay if, if, if you have the gluten, uh, problem, I don't know, I'm only guessing, that it's a rice- Because it's, because it's a rice beer- Yeah... it might be gluten-free. Could be. That's what I'm, uh...
• 16:57
It should say on the bottle if they wanna make money or can it... they're not really leaning into that because it's, I mean, it's, the cover art is Bruce Dickinson. Yes, that's Bruce Dickinson.
• 17:05
It is a, it is a product of England. Oh. Uh, Dave, what are you, uh, currently imbibing upon in and/or- Uh, well, I-... an old fashioned?...
• 17:13
I just came from the, I just had a burger at the Sawmill where I had a couple of 420s, but, um, then, uh, uh, then I, uh, came home and, uh, I just made myself a, a Manhattan with, with Knob Creek, so.
• 17:28
[laughs] There you go. Good, good call. There you go. So how, so, um, how's the website going? Uh, I, I'll, I'll put this again in the show notes, Life Above 8.
• 17:37
Yeah, so, um- Spelled, spelled out eight, not the number 8, which doesn't necessarily- Right, so-... mean anything, but...
• 17:43
right, so, uh, so I did a little, uh, video of the, um, of the pump track, so if people wanna get an idea of what it's like, I, there's a video on- Oh, nice... uh, linked on my website.
• 17:53
Also, I got a new YouTube channel with all of two videos on it. Yes, I subscribed. Life Above 8. [laughs] Thank you, guys. I subscribed. Yes, subscribe. [laughs] Gotta get to 100 to get that- Wait, what?
• 18:03
Let me, let me look it up right now. [laughs] I, I saw the call- Let me look at this... call to arms. I was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm on it. I'm on it. I'm on it." I like that-
• 18:11
Yeah, nine- 98 views and 47 subscribers or something [laughs] But I'm a, I'm a social media, you know, um- Butterfly... influencer, for sure.
• 18:22
[laughs] But, um, no, so I did a little video, and you can find that on Life Above 8. Um, it's got some photos of our construction project. I helped out with a lot of the construction during, only during the...
• 18:35
I mean, those guys did all the work of moving all the dirt and, and building all the forms and putting in the rebar and stuff. And then, but then when it came to pouring concrete, uh, they needed extra people. Sure.
• 18:45
Two people weren't enough. So there was a bunch of folks that, that joined in and helped, and I did that for a week or two and helped with the, the concrete pouring.
• 18:54
And then I, I, uh, stick around and helped with the landscaping afterwards as well, but- Oh, yeah, here we go. Hey, you got 768 views already on this thing. Oh, nice. Yeah It's better than I thought. I, I, I- Oh, wait.
• 19:04
Whoa... I am an influencer. Stupid- There we go. Stupid- Volume... volume. I thought it was me. [laughs] Um, yeah, I mean, you know what?
• 19:11
I was so bummed that I let the pump track at the old Rays in Milwaukee- Disappeared... get out of my view because- That sucks... I wanted to buy that thing and set it up somewhere 'cause it was so badass. Right.
• 19:21
It would've had to be- It was... it would've had to be inside, though- It was the best... and it was just finding space for that thing- Well-... was spendy. 'Cause it was, you know- I know, but it would've been possible.
• 19:30
It wasn't that big. It would've been possible. And, uh, and you know, like, there's that one little, um, uh, sk- there's that little bowl in the garage in River West.
• 19:41
You know, there's that little key club with the skateboard. River West has got that garage with a, a bowl built in. Yeah, off of... Yeah, Fratney. And, um- Yeah. So, you know, that would've been...
• 19:52
You know, just needed a, a, a three or four car garage or something like that. Yeah, I don't think it would've fit in a two car, but it- No...
• 19:58
you know, it, you know, the, the b- the building was so big, I think the track is actually bigger than you might think it was. Yeah, it probably was. No, it's got a high ceiling.
• 20:05
It was probably f- probably, uh, it wasn't the size of a football field or anything. No, but- It was like a quarter of a football field, I bet...
• 20:11
but at the, but at the peak of that thing- It, it was also like eight feet high... it was peak, too. Right. Right, it was deep. Did you ever see the construction pictures of it? Yeah, it was awesome.
• 20:17
It was super kickass. They, they used every- Yeah, it was deep... they made a form out of plywood with, with the, the bowl cut, the radius of the thing- Right...
• 20:25
changing every one of them, and they were only about eight or 10 inches apart. They were small. Right, and that- That's why that thing was so rock solid. It was just awesome. Right. It was incredible.
• 20:32
That's the way you gotta do it. That's how you crank. And I don't remember if they built it with Skatelite or, or what they used, but, uh- Uh, some, some dude from Milwaukee, I believe.
• 20:39
In fact, I'm trying to track him down [laughs] so we can build one in our, our new cavernous space. Well, hey, you know, that's what Mitch does, and Mitch is my, my daughter's, um, boyfriend, Mitch Schmid.
• 20:50
I can't remember his hashtag or whatever it is. But, um, he's sponsored by Skatelite, so- Oh, right on... uh, and he built... So yeah, I can hook you up with, with that if- We should at least-... you want...
• 20:59
at least get a conversation going- Yeah... 'cause I'm sure it's not gonna be cheap, but I wanna figure out how it makes sense to do it and not lose my ass on it. Could draw some income to this place, too. Right. Right?
• 21:08
Well, it, it, it- And well, th- th- this place is so cool because there's so much going on here, and we have an opportunity to take over another, like, 50,000 square feet on the other side of the alley from us. Oh.
• 21:18
So it's like- Oh, that'd be cool... well, let's get this place going. Yeah, absolutely. Well, let me hook you up with Mitch and, uh, and he can, uh, give you some ideas. You can private message me on that. Yeah, I will.
• 21:30
[laughs] I will. So, um, so yeah, so the skate, so the pump track is open now. It's, it's wildly popular again, uh, just like the, the bike park is. And, um, and three cheers to our king of cable for, for... You know,
• 21:46
you look at it and all the, the effort for, for weeks and weeks that those guys were out there, and he's got his own skid steer and all that sort of stuff that he's using.
• 21:54
But, um, but really if you've done any of these things in the past, like, what people don't realize is the three years of, of meetings and, and keeping your mental energy, [laughs] you know, going- Yeah, for sure...
• 22:10
and people look at you like you're crazy and you wanna do this, and it's, "What's your motive? What's, what do you g- get out of this?" All that sort of thing. And- It's altru- altruism, baby... so three... Yeah. Yeah.
• 22:20
Right. [laughs] Making people happy. Three cheers to Scott and to Rasta for, for making that happen. Yeah, that's, that's fantastic. Yeah.
• 22:28
I just, I, I, you know, you were, uh, saying how long it takes to plan and this and that, and my son is 15 right now. Yeah. And he's already... Basically all he has to do is his project to be an Eagle Scout.
• 22:40
He's already completed every other one at 15, which is, like, you know, couple years- Really young, yeah... couple years in advance. Right, yeah. But he's gonna- Right... he's gonna just kinda coast and then
• 22:50
I'm like, "Dude, at least do something today. Call the county or send them an email and ask them..." 'Cause he wants to do a bike shelter on the Oak Leaf Trail, and I'm like, "That's a- Yeah... big endeavor."
• 23:00
Some of the other Eagle projects that have gotten kids Eagle in our troop are much less strenuous than that by a long ways, and I'm like, "You know, that's, that, that's raising money. That's coordinating construction."
• 23:13
Well, here I got a- It's all that stuff, you know? Well, I got a shortcut for you on that, too, if he wants to do something like that. [laughs] He should- Yeah, let's, let, let's, let's get Dave on all of our problems.
• 23:22
[laughs] He should, he should talk to, uh, Amelia Cagle because the, the Cagle Foundation put up all those signs and stuff like that, and they've got a- Oh, that's such a good suggestion.
• 23:33
I'm glad you called today 'cause that is a fantastic [laughs] idea. Yeah, totally. I, I- It'll short, it'll shortcut all kinds of things to just talk to her.
• 23:41
Um- I don't want it just to be because he knows somebody kinda thing, though, 'cause I know you- No... and he knows- He's still gonna have to do, he's still gonna have to do the work, you know? Oh, yeah.
• 23:49
[laughs] No, you just have to be playing the show in his, uh, oh, I'm just editing it. Oh, wait, you should listen to the sound quality and the content here, boy. And then you listen to it, and the bug is in the ear.
• 24:00
If, if he listened to this show, he'd probably disown me as a dad. [laughs] Pretty sure of that deal. I don't know. Oh. I was, I was just spitballing. All right, Dave. So I got, I got one other little bit of news. Okay.
• 24:12
Um, so bikepacking.com, Logan Watts from bikepacking.com, um, thanks to Logan for finally publishing my waterfall route.
• 24:20
So- Oh, right on Well, so this is like a- The 384-mile route is on bikepacking.com and people can- It has, it has been referenced several times in things I've seen already, and I think that's fantastic, dude. Yeah.
• 24:34
Well, that, that website is, gets so much reach. You know, it's, it really is the, the place to, to look, so.
• 24:41
So- I mean, I've got a lot of those routes on my Life Above Eight website as well, um, but I, I don't have the worldwide reach that, that those guys do. Right.
• 24:50
So, so thanks to Logan and, and all the, uh, Lucas and, and all the guys at bikepacking.com for sharing that. So is one of those guys, does he own a publishing company or something?
• 25:00
'Cause I just got the Bikepacking Journal number six. Yeah. Which, by the way, I wrote your phone number on the cover of it, and I haven't even opened the magazine up yet.
• 25:08
[laughs] Just in case I had to call you back 'cause of our, uh, technical shenanigans. But- [laughs]... he, I mean, these things are, like, you know, it... What is it, 60 bucks a year to be a member of this collective?
• 25:19
Yeah, of that collective. And, I mean, these two, uh, are at least worth half of that money, if not more. The, the magazine? Plus, you use the site all the time. It's like, really, go ahead and support these guys.
• 25:31
I mean, I'm, I, I just, they do such a good job. They do what I'd like to do, but- Right... don't have the other three guys yet that can really kinda push this thing forward, you know?
• 25:39
Look at, out here, as he's looking at us three. So the guy that started- Those guys have real jobs. They're not gonna help on some money-losing project. The, the guy that started bikepacking.com was, was Logan Watts.
• 25:51
And, and Logan was an industry guy, and he's got design background and stuff like that. He also knows code and things like that. So, so although it's a WordPress-based website, it's heavily, you know, customized.
• 26:02
Yeah, for sure. And Logan, Logan can do all that, and he's a pretty good designer as well. Um, and then he partnered with a number of- That's why I hate him. He can do everything. [laughs] I know.
• 26:12
[laughs] He partnered with another, with a bunch of other very talented guys.
• 26:16
And relative to the Journal, um, Lucas Winsenberg, who was a Minneapolis guy for a long time, lived in Berlin, I'm not sure where he's living right now.
• 26:26
Uh, but Lucas published that, that, um, God, I can't remember the name of it. But it was a similar thing. Like, it was like an inch thick, like worldwide travel, um,
• 26:39
you know, bikepacking, uh, touring, um, annual that, that Lucas published out of, out of Minneapolis.
• 26:46
So I think between the two of them, um, those guys have, have got all the, you know, the tools necessary to produce something- Yeah. I mean, they smell good, Dave... as, as good as they do. Open it up and smell it.
• 26:59
I know. [laughs] It just smells good. I'm like, "Oh, my God, does that thing smell good." I know. You wrapped it- I got a new thing- Yeah, yeah... that's gonna make me happy for a week... you had wrapped it.
• 27:04
I didn't get mine yet. You handed it to me. I didn't get mine yet. And I'm like, "Yes, me." But the mail's a little slower up here, so. Oh, yeah. You're up in rural bumblefuck up there, so. Yeah. Right. So.
• 27:11
Uh, right on, man. We'll see. Well, thank God you, uh, had the time to call in today, 'cause otherwise it would have been us looking at Sam and stuff and- Well, and Craig. Daikaiju. [laughs] And Dave. Oh. Yeah.
• 27:22
Oh, well, okay. Daikaiju. First of all, we could bring a couple things up- El Rongo... real quickly. El Rongo. Uh, Daikaiju on the 18th, September 18th. Uh, that would be s- tomorrow, uh, in, uh- And tonight is El Rongo.
• 27:35
El Rongo. El Rongo. From, from Giuseppe's. Which I also, uh, sent a note to, um, Mr. Scanlan to say, "Can we put one of your songs at the end of our show?" And he said, Barry said yes, and we're killing it.
• 27:44
And he said, uh, uh, I'll send you some. Okay. So there should be a El Rongo tune-out- Dinger, yeah... for the end of the show. Oh, yeah. For people that don't- Nice...
• 27:54
have the scruples to see Daikaiju, there is also The Flaming Lips playing at Summerfest. And also David, uh, not David Byrne. [laughs] Fucking Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew. Yeah, there's some great shows.
• 28:06
And da, blah, blah. All at the same fucking time. But it's Daikaiju. Oh. They always ruin it by doing that. Exactly. Daikaiju. All right, Dave, thanks very much for- Okay, guys... calling in. All right.
• 28:16
And we'll talk to you within four weeks, otherwise you're fired from this show. [laughs] Okay. All right, man. Thank you. All right, boys. All right, bye. Bye. Good night. Dave, uh, Seely Dave. Seely Dave.
• 28:28
Seely Dave Schlabowski up there from, uh, Northern Wisconsin. I keep sniff, I keep sniffing. You know what? It's- I keep sniffing on his Airbnb listing. Oh, God, dude.
• 28:35
'Cause I'm looking at something else, and I'm going like- Now you have another reason to go up there, the pump track- Yeah, yeah... and fucking cable- Exactly... which is not very far away. And I'm just like, "Oh, man."
• 28:42
Is that where you visited a few weeks ago- Oh... we're about to go? Mm, yeah, it's been a bit, but yes. Okay. And I would go up there, and I told Dave this.
• 28:48
I said, "Dave, can I live in this place and never, ever go home?" And he's like- [laughs]... "If that's what you want." [laughs] And I said, "You are so fucking tempting me on this." [laughs] No, don't.
• 29:00
[laughs] I, I don't know. I mean, uh- I mean, just, yeah, the w- the pictures just do a little dance to me. I'm like- I, I don't know if, I don't know if I would just do it on my own or Wendy could come up there.
• 29:08
[laughs] I'm not even really sure. I'm like, I was so happy up there. A- and you know, it's been a, kind of a bummer, uh, last, you know, year and a half- Right, right... plus.
• 29:17
And not just because of, you know, whatever's going on with the whole world, but in my world things have been kind of, you know, messed up too. Yeah.
• 29:25
And when I was up there, I did not have a care in the world, and I'm like, "I'm not gonna answer calls. I'm not gonna do anything, and I'm just gonna exist up here." Have a fucking great time.
• 29:34
It is a great spot to exist. There you go. And you know what? In the winter, I've been up there about 500 times in the winter too. It's awesome. [laughs] Gorgeous, quiet.
• 29:43
The only thing I do not wanna do up there ever is put a fucking line in the water and try and catch a fish. Well, it's not my thing either- Well... but I understand. Oh.
• 29:52
There's fish- I'll blast some shit that's running with horns on or whatever, and I'm not- I don't worry about that, but that's just me. There are fish mongers and restaurants. Not fishing. Ain't fishing. They're...
• 29:58
Da, dum. Oh, well, if we actually had to catch them, then prepare them, then eat them, that's not a bad idea. Yeah. Yeah. That sounds like a lot of work. Right? When I could just go to the store. [laughs] All right.
• 30:12
Sam, thank God you sat there the whole time and barely said a word. Although you did, you did- I talked at the beginning. Yeah, you did kinda do the opening of the show. Yeah. It was awesome. Yeah. Uh, so here's...
• 30:23
Well, okay. Where were you? Well, what I wanted w- Where were you at the start of the show? [laughs] One of the reasons why I even wanted Sam to have a headset on his helmet-...
• 30:29
is that he is, uh, doing a p- uh, at least participating in the- Judging... organizing and/or judging of a strongman sanctioned competition at Black Husky, which obviously everybody knows is our favorite beer.
• 30:44
Uh, but yeah, uh, Phil, w- so this is the 25th? The 25th of this month, yes. Uh- The September 25th. Black Husky is on the corner of Bremen and Locust in, uh, our former home, River West.
• 30:55
Well, we're still in River West, I guess, but- Eh, it is... we're not on the Lo- we're not on the Locust crappy street part of River West. Anyway. Uh, yeah. The brewery's awesome. Low, low- 'Cause that corner's good...
• 31:05
low, low, flow. 25th of this month, uh, Tim and Tony asked me to help, to, to help to run, to donate some equipment, and to do some judging.
• 31:17
Uh, I'm no longer involved in the, in the strongman world, but if friends ask, I will help them. So anyway. So in the weak man's world now, or?
• 31:26
So do you judge, so like do you judge like when we're at Nomad and stand on the corner and just judge everything that goes by? It's like, [laughs] you, you, you. You judge the judging?
• 31:34
Only, only if they're lifting something. Oh, there you go. Okay. Uh- So there are criteria- Yeah...
• 31:38
for judging and- So it'll be, it'll be kind of a- It's not full inception [laughs] It'll be kind of a, a local level type contest, um, with different weight classes, and they'll have beginner, intermediate.
• 31:48
Um, but there'll be five events. One'll be a tire flip, actually keg carry and tire flip, so keep- Again, why don't they just roll the fucking tire? It'd be way easier. That's cool.
• 31:58
Yeah, I, I saw some of the, uh [laughs] I saw some of the training videos- Yeah. Um-... in Holland. Everyone's like, "Ah." I, I get, I get it, but man. The, the, the tire- Man, my damn back. My damn back hurts.
• 32:07
Man, cavemen had freaking wheels, and they rolled them. They didn't flip them. My back was hurting watching it. [laughs] Stop it. Let him finish. 'Cause you're not doing it right. I know. [laughs] Uh- This I know.
• 32:15
[laughs] Flat back, butt down. [laughs] Um- Butt down, bro. [laughs] But yeah, the, the tire weighs about 600 for the, for the men. Um, the keg'll weigh, I'm not sure, maybe it's 200 or 250.
• 32:27
Have to carry the keg, drop the keg, and flip the tire back. And then after that they'll have to...
• 32:34
I think they're doing a farmer's walk, which will be X amount of weight in each hand, kinda like carrying a milk, milk jug on a farm. Ooh. Uh, if for the heavyweight men, it'll probably be like 290 in each hand.
• 32:46
Maybe 250. Ugh. I'm not sure. That's not very much. That's a lot for me. No, it's not. I f- I feel like- That's not very much [laughs]... I w- if I dropped it on my foot, it would be bad...
• 32:53
it's, it's all about the training that you put in ahead of time. It is, that is not a significant amount of weight. Oh. Um, does take a strong grip. And then there will actually be a beer stein that he had made.
• 33:06
Um- All right. Okay. Let, let me pause you right here, 'cause this is, uh, pimping out our location here, podcastmke.org, in our little thing here, and they're not there right now.
• 33:16
Right next door, right through this concrete wall is the House of Rad. And those guys, even though they play music extremely loud, and it would be very interesting to try to do a podcast with it, made that stein.
• 33:30
Yeah, it's pretty cool. Oh, okay. And, and, and so Tim, I, he had picked it up, and he was rolling out of the gate, and I was coming in. I'm like, "What are you doing here? Delivering beer, I hope?" He's like, "Nope."
• 33:40
[laughs] So, uh, he, we got out of the things, and I, I held the thing, like- That's pretty cool... it, it's this huge stein, and you gotta hold it out in front of you for as long as you can kind of deal. Right. Nice.
• 33:51
Just like the whatever's the one arm thing that Nor- Yeah, yeah... whatever Norwegians or whatever. And it'll, they'll have, uh... it'll, has the ability to be plate loaded, so you can drop five pounders in there.
• 34:01
Oh, geez. Oh. I, I could drop five pounders in somewhere, I'll tell you that much. [laughs] Um, and it'll be, it, it- It was hey, a little bit hot there, Rob... it was hot dog day two days ago, I tell you.
• 34:11
There'll be, uh, overhead press, and then everybody's favorite, there'll be Atlas stones. What, so what is the largest Atlas stone for the- Three and a quarter?... strongest individuals? At your- Just, just, uh...
• 34:21
oh, for, for- Well, at the... you're gonna use in this contest... for this contest? 285. We, we would top out, you know, your first guess. A little bit over three and a quarter. Okay. Probably 350. My stone series, um,
• 34:34
goes from 170 to 425. And are they all the same diameter? No. Uh- No. So the heavier they get, the bigger they are? Yeah. 'Cause you can't just load them with gold or something to make them heavier?
• 34:44
Uh, we do add some lead shot to some of them to make them heavy, because sometimes to get heavy enough to challenge you, they get so big you can't reach your arms around them.
• 34:53
So there are certain molds that we'll add lead shot to, but these guys, they won't need it, you know. [laughs] They're- Yeah, you, like you said, it's kind of an amateur level, uh, local competition.
• 35:07
Yeah, it's an amateur level, local to intermediate. And that's, that's awesome. 400 pound? My, my heaviest one's four and a quarter. Um, yeah, every 30 pounds from 170 to 425. Wow. And, uh, so...
• 35:18
but anyway, there'll be six of them. We got whiskey barrels that they'll load them onto. Uh, it'll be cool. That's everybody's favorite. But in addition to that, he'll have food trucks there.
• 35:28
Obviously plenty of beer to drink and just- Yeah, it's all the Oktoberfest celebration... yeah, the, the street'll be closed. It'll be, it'll be good... and, uh, it'll be a fun time. Oh, it's gonna be a kickass time.
• 35:37
Yeah. Well, I got a bunch of people from work coming. There's actually an event on the- Really? So I can talk bad about you? You can. [laughs] They won't believe you, but. Yeah, they will. Yeah, no. Um, I'm pretty sure.
• 35:46
Oh, trust me, they will. All right, Tony- But yeah, it'll be fun... Tony's trying to pass electrical inspection. JK's, uh, contemplating kicking his job in the fucking ass. Sam's gonna do this judging thing.
• 35:57
[laughs] What are you doing, Greg? Or Ben. Just, just trying to get the electricity in this place. Yeah, just trying to get electricity turned on. That's all I'm trying to do.
• 36:05
Although we did get mailboxes today, which is nice. Big fucking deal. Let's get some work done. I- Hey, you gotta appreciate the brass on the- Oh... Titanic sometimes. All right then, everybody. No, it's not that far.
• 36:16
[laughs] I don't even... What button do I push again? I think it's this one. I have one of them. I'm gonna push this button right here and see what's happening. [imitates air horn] Thank you, everybody.
• 36:22
I'm gonna push this button. Thanks, Sam, for being on the show. Thanks JK and Tony for even doing 130 of these for some dumb asshole reasons. [laughs] And I'm gonna play, I'm gonna play some Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden.
• 36:35
  [rock music]
