- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist and also happen to be
- 0:10a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every. Day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions. Possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the world, so welcome to the.
- 0:22Coop and let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. It's very, very early morning
- 0:32and part of the reason I'm doing this so early and in the garage
- 0:35is yesterday. Well, the last two days I have
- 0:39been taking on the interior renovation of the chicken coop.
- 0:43And one of the interesting things about me doing this is I
- 0:47talked about this that you know, they like change.
- 0:49I love to be creative and dive in.
- 0:54In the process of doing this inside.
- 0:57I knew, I mean, chickens are messy.
- 0:58Let's face it. And we had a, we have a huge
- 1:02coop. It's 20 feet.
- 1:05I think it's 20 feet or 24 feet by 14 feet.
- 1:09It's very big and double doors that open up.
- 1:11It's like a giant shed. It actually was built by the
- 1:15Amish, which is I love saying because they make amazing
- 1:18things. And it was delivered, built off
- 1:22site and then delivered, which is another amazing thing to
- 1:25watch happen with this little tiny cart that comes in and puts
- 1:29it where it's supposed to go. But anyway, I don't want to
- 1:31digress down that hill. The coop inside originally I had
- 1:35painted it. We added box lay boxes for them
- 1:39and they were, you know, when I had fewer chickens, they had
- 1:42plenty of of room to lay eggs. Well, as it turned out, they did
- 1:46not have enough room to lay eggs.
- 1:47So I wanted to incorporate more lay boxes and remove the
- 1:51sections inside that we had built in for the baby chicks
- 1:54when we had them and come up with a better system for that
- 1:57because we only have those for a very short period of time and
- 2:00then we have big chickens way longer.
- 2:03So weighing the priorities out chose to go ahead and do this.
- 2:07Now in the process of doing it, we had to RIP out the two
- 2:10brooders that we had in there for the baby chicks to give the
- 2:13big chickens more space. And then I had to decide where
- 2:16am I putting more lay boxes? And I didn't want to cut another
- 2:19hole in the wall to build a like a bump out for lay boxes, which
- 2:23is what we did the first time and that still works great.
- 2:26And they love them all, but they argue and sometimes there's two
- 2:29hens in one box because they all have to lay eggs at the same
- 2:32time. So I got this idea that we were
- 2:35going to put these little shelves that popped out of the
- 2:38wall along the side wall, and then they could jump up onto
- 2:41those shelves. And I say a shelf, but it's more
- 2:44like a box that hangs. And then they could jump up in
- 2:47there and they could lay eggs. And I would then want to paint a
- 2:51mural that goes along with those little shelves.
- 2:54So in the process of this, which sounds like, OK, that's enough
- 2:58work as it is, Kim Then I decided, OK, I'm going to
- 3:02repaint the entire inside of the coop because it's gross.
- 3:07Like if that's just what happens when you have chickens.
- 3:09So I had to clean it all out, wipe it down and then I take the
- 3:15and paint the walls. Well, of course I have to
- 3:18because inside is you want it to be as bright as you can for them
- 3:21because that's what makes them lay.
- 3:22So it has to be bright white. When you paint bright white, you
- 3:25have to go pretty thick to make sure it's covering everything
- 3:28and the rollers going on the wood that is in a shed.
- 3:33Mind you, it's not like the highest of quality woods finish
- 3:36wise. It's great wood, but it's just
- 3:38not finished. So it sucks up the paint.
- 3:40So all these little factors started adding up and what was
- 3:44supposed to be a one day project of my vacation turned out to be
- 3:48roughly a three day project of my vacation.
- 3:52And I'm happy to say that except for the mural portion,
- 3:57everything else is done. The inside has been painted, the
- 4:00whole coop has been scraped out, cleaned, scrubbed, all fresh
- 4:04straw. Everything has been manicured
- 4:07and fixed. And now I just have to and the
- 4:11and the new boxes are mounted on their painted bright yellow
- 4:14popping off the white wall and I just have to paint the mural.
- 4:18Now here's where this gets to the point of today.
- 4:22So we've talked before about how things can become bigger than we
- 4:27thought. So in the process of doing this,
- 4:29this became much bigger than I thought and I had a choice.
- 4:33Mind you, the weather during all of this was it and still is
- 4:38extremely humid. So I am outside.
- 4:41I am drenched from head to toe in this coop doing this work.
- 4:45There aren't fans out there. There's no electricity so that
- 4:48the chickens can't get in trouble because coops burn often
- 4:52and so you keep electricity away as much as you can.
- 4:56And mind you, here I am dripping wet painting and having I'm
- 5:03right-handed. So you like you, you continually
- 5:05use your right hand so I can feel my arm burning.
- 5:09And I have to talk my aunt myself off the ledge because I
- 5:12have to tell you how many times did I hear myself say, what did
- 5:17I decide to do this for? Like what was the reason?
- 5:21And I had to keep reminding myself, what was the reason?
- 5:24Why did I do this? And in that process of coaching
- 5:28yourself, you all have to coach yourself at some point or
- 5:31another. We all have to coach ourselves.
- 5:33And this was my point of doing it.
- 5:34I had to coach myself. So I'm in there.
- 5:36I'm talking to myself and I'm saying, what did you do this
- 5:38for? Because you wanted to be a
- 5:40certain way. OK, great.
- 5:41Well, now you're on your path to that.
- 5:43It took longer than you thought. So what?
- 5:45So what are you going to give up?
- 5:48And that was the question I kept asking myself, are you going to
- 5:51give up? And the answer is no.
- 5:53What's the point of doing it and then deciding to give up?
- 5:57So I want you to realize, and the reason I'm being very raw
- 6:01and honest about this is because we all want to do that
- 6:03sometimes, even me. And guess what?
- 6:07I didn't give up. And I got through it.
- 6:09And I can't wait to put up pictures of it when I finish the
- 6:11mural. All right, my friends, don't
- 6:14give up. I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:16Bye.
