- 0:23with you and do so until 2:00. At that time off the bench on
- 0:27Roberts, Lucas Strain until 5, overtime Iowa 5 until 6.
- 0:31Here's what's coming up on our program in the next couple of
- 0:34hours. We're going to have both of the
- 0:35voices, radio voices, join us in our number one.
- 0:39We'll start things off with Gary Dolphin.
- 0:41He'll be here 25 minutes after the hour.
- 0:44We'll talk to Dolph about the Hawkeyes, what he saw in week #1
- 0:47some of his memories of this series.
- 0:50Gary Dolphin, the voice of the Hawks coming up here at 12:25.
- 0:54And then John Walters, he'll join us about 12:45.
- 0:58Get the Cyclone perspective on things from John Walters. 12:45
- 1:03At that time, we'll switch to our number 2 and switched out of
- 1:07Cyhawk programming and head into the cap man.
- 1:10Off we go to Chicago. He's presented each and every
- 1:13week by Centurion Stone of Iowa, David Kaplan talking Chicago
- 1:17sports. Obviously, the Bears, the Cubs
- 1:19had a nice win last night as they take their second straight
- 1:21over the Braves. Game three of that series goes
- 1:24tonight. So the cap ban on Chicago sports
- 1:26coming up at 1:00, centuring stone of Iowa sponsors.
- 1:30And then Frank Schwab, who covers the NFL for
- 1:33yahoosports.com. He'll join us at 1:30 as we inch
- 1:37our way to week number one of the National Football League
- 1:40week. Game one tomorrow night, Eagles
- 1:43and the Cowboys, that numbers opened at 7, went to 7 1/2.
- 1:47You said it got to 9 at one point.
- 1:48Yesterday, yeah, drop back down to 8, a flat 8 but yeah, 9 was
- 1:52the high watermark, according to a gal bill over at V sin Sign up
- 1:57for the newsletter if you're a gambler, I.
- 1:58Don't know why I don't. I I don't either.
- 2:01Well, I do know why I don't know.
- 2:02I seldom open my e-mail. That's the problem.
- 2:04You are an odd duck. You do not have your e-mail on
- 2:08your phone. No, and you will check it not at
- 2:11work. Nope.
- 2:12Well, not this work, right? You'll do it at the Home Office
- 2:15once a day. No two or three days unless I
- 2:20know something's coming. Anyways, that's that's our
- 2:23program We look forward to. We're glad you're with us here
- 2:26until 2O clock. You've got some interesting
- 2:28little Nuggets we'll get to because we can't bet player
- 2:32props and I'm glad we can. I say it every year I don't I
- 2:35think we, we can bet on enough. There's enough on the menu.
- 2:39If you really have to make a bet, you're going to find a way
- 2:42to do so. But one of the things you can't
- 2:44find a way to do so legally is bet on player props when it
- 2:47comes to college sports athletes.
- 2:50And I hope that stays the way in place here because it's bad
- 2:52enough for these poor kids and some of the A holes out there
- 2:56that, you know, lose their $10 bet.
- 2:58And it's because of you didn't handicap it wrong.
- 3:01The whatever something went wrong in the game that you
- 3:06didn't think would happen. It's sports after all.
- 3:08Things are going to go wrong. But I'm glad we can't bet.
- 3:10So we'll get into that. Did you watch Hard Knocks at all
- 3:14last night? The finale of the series?
- 3:16Nope, I watched the episode 2 episodes ago with the.
- 3:18Bears did you and. That was it.
- 3:20I watched the finale last night just 'cause I wanted to just I
- 3:24I'm not gonna go back and watch 2-3 and four.
- 3:26I watched the cut down day last night and just the Bills and
- 3:30because that series used to mean so much to to me.
- 3:32But how the mighty have fallen, right?
- 3:34Because it was it was a behemoth when it first came out.
- 3:37It was appointment TV. Not so much anymore.
- 3:39There's just so darn many of them real quick from baseball
- 3:42last night, a nice win for the Cubs.
- 3:44Had to have it as they, you know, try, I guess, to stay
- 3:48within shouting distance of the Brewers.
- 3:50I don't think it's going to happen.
- 3:52But you know, they won last night and we'll we'll see where
- 3:55it goes. They will send tonight Kate
- 3:58Horton, who is one of the stories of the year when it
- 4:02comes to the Cubs to the bump and we'll talk to Kathy about
- 4:05that. All right, let's get into Cy
- 4:06Hawk and some of these now for those of you listening on one of
- 4:10our affiliates over in eastern Iowa that bleeds into Illinois
- 4:14across the river. Which one would that be?
- 4:16The Quad Cities? That would be Quad Cities.
- 4:17Yep, and that's an AM It is correct.
- 4:20Yep. So if you're listening to us
- 4:22there, you may have an apps sports betting app over in the
- 4:27state of Illinois. Again, we here in Iowa can't.
- 4:29But for yucks and giggles, I always like to try and guess as
- 4:32to where some of these numbers may fall when it comes to, you
- 4:37know, passing yards, I'm guessing rushing.
- 4:39How many do you have of these? As many as you want.
- 4:43Yes, we have any time. Touchdown score, first touchdown
- 4:47score, passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards,
- 4:50alternate totals. How about a little defense team
- 4:53totals? We got it all here so we can
- 4:55break it down. And more than anything, this
- 4:57isn't because I mean, a majority of our audit, more than a
- 5:00majority of our audience is in the state of Iowa.
- 5:02But I think it's a good jumping off point of just seeing at
- 5:05least we're the odds makers see these numbers and if it marries
- 5:08with what we think we're going to see on Saturday.
- 5:10So it's a fun way to look at it instead of me just guessing what
- 5:13it is. Sure, these are actionable props
- 5:15that are out there, just not in the state of Iowa.
- 5:18Yeah, it's going to be I, I keep going back and forth on this
- 5:22game, Trent, you know, years that Iowa State doesn't have a
- 5:25chance, they win, you know, and likewise, Iowa, you think that
- 5:30this is the Iowa State's year and the Hawks pull it off.
- 5:32Last year, last year, last year, Iowa State finds a way to win
- 5:37the football game. 21 three against North Dakota in week
- 5:39one, they didn't look very good. They didn't I would dominated
- 5:42the second-half against Illinois State.
- 5:44Oh, they're throwing the football.
- 5:45Look at Reese Van der Zee. They got it all.
- 5:47They're in Kinnock. They're not going to lose 2 in a
- 5:49row. No, no.
- 5:49No, no, no. And the narratives died.
- 5:51And they did and out the window. So we'll see where this one
- 5:54goes. It's a total coin flip.
- 5:55I understand why the number is what it is.
- 5:57All right, So I want to start with the quarterbacks because
- 5:59that one, this one really intrigues me, both of them,
- 6:01because I think Rocco Beck's number is going to be, you know,
- 6:05obviously north of 200 at some point.
- 6:07But Mark Gronowski's the one to me that that I'm fascinated
- 6:11'cause he threw for, as we recall, 44 yards against Albany
- 6:15in week #1. That is going to live in infamy
- 6:17one way or the other. It's going to.
- 6:19It's either going to be this was the start of another terrible
- 6:24quarterback play for Iowa or an anomaly.
- 6:27So did you, because we were on the air when the stories broke,
- 6:30so we weren't able to like, you know, absorb them, if you will.
- 6:34His press conference. Yeah.
- 6:36Anything from his press conference that leads you to
- 6:38believe that it was the jitters. Again, you're 50 years senior,
- 6:44you've played in championship games.
- 6:46How can you have the jitters? It's not like Michigan or Ohio
- 6:49State or Penn State was on the other sideline.
- 6:52It was freaking Albany. But it was.
- 6:54A dream of his to play in the Big 10.
- 6:56It was a dream of his to to be an Iowa Hawkeye and they brought
- 6:59him in. Wasn't a dream to play throw for
- 7:0144 yards. It wasn't, but there are certain
- 7:03people wired this way. I'm sure you played hockey with
- 7:05guys like this, guys that they just got too charged up and then
- 7:08you have to find a way to be able to.
- 7:10Drew Tate was the same way. In fact, that story came out his
- 7:12first career start. A lot of the same things.
- 7:14I believe he had cramping in that game.
- 7:17Like we said, it wasn't overly hot day in Iowa City either.
- 7:20Normally it's 90° and it's a preseason.
- 7:22That's when you see cramping. Did we see anybody else cramp
- 7:24up? It was a he just might be a guy
- 7:27that gets too charged up. I think it's concerning, but at
- 7:30least there's reasoning behind it.
- 7:32OK, you know what? And, and part of it, too, part
- 7:34of the reasoning is because of the bad taste that the Hawkeye
- 7:37fans have in their mouth because a lot of them ponied up for Kate
- 7:40McNamara. Absolutely right.
- 7:41And here we go again. And he said I wasn't going to do
- 7:44it. And damn it, I wrote that check
- 7:45and I'm all in. Am I leaving my Hawks?
- 7:47I bleed black and gold and this is what I get 44 yards?
- 7:50OK, enough about him. Let's move on.
- 7:53Let's get to the the to his his passing prop.
- 7:58I would. I'm going to a complete flyer
- 8:02135. Yards, you are almost right on.
- 8:07136 1/2 is the number currently at FanDuel. 136 1/2 is the
- 8:12number. Little juice on the over -114
- 8:15but basically that is the #136 1/2.
- 8:19Gun to your head right now. You got to bet it.
- 8:22Well, he's going to have time to throw the football because
- 8:24everybody has time to throw the football against Iowa State.
- 8:27And that's not his criticism. That's how they play defense.
- 8:31I love their linebackers. I like their secondary based on
- 8:38what I saw last week under. Under.
- 8:40What would you do? Under have to see it, have to
- 8:43prove it. 136 1/2 in the year 2025.
- 8:48If he does go under that number, do they win the football game?
- 8:50They still can. Because of what the we, we're
- 8:53going to get to the rushing. Folks, they've done it too many
- 8:55times to say that they. Can't.
- 8:57All right, let's get to Rocco Beck's number because this was
- 8:59clearly north of 200. And I think that Iowa State is
- 9:03going to do some damage through the air.
- 9:06I don't think they're going to be able to run the football.
- 9:09I think it's it's, it's the tight ends, it's the receivers.
- 9:14If I was setting the number on Rocco Beck, I would go 242.
- 9:19You're very close again, 236 1/2 is the number currently at
- 9:22FanDuel Caesar's has at the same place prize picks as one of
- 9:26those that you can do over under numbers.
- 9:28Those are the three that I see currently in the market.
- 9:30DraftKings also has these and yes, 236 1/2 is the number
- 9:34passing yards. He had 276 last year, of course,
- 9:37aided by a 75 yard touchdown by Jay Leno.
- 9:40But I would go over. You would.
- 9:43I would questions in the middle of the defense with the middle
- 9:46linebacker spot. You have safety plays.
- 9:49Xavier Wampa do. You look great.
- 9:51Hasn't look great his whole career.
- 9:53Lumber was running around. Lutber was.
- 9:55Okay. I thought TJ Hall got targeted
- 9:57like three straight times. Sean Lee was the best cornerback
- 10:01that they had on the field. And then you don't know after
- 10:02that. Yeah, I'm over 230. 6 an hour.
- 10:04I think if Iowa State is going to win the game, they need to be
- 10:07over. Conversely, you didn't think it
- 10:10was the same way with Gronowski. All right, so here's what
- 10:12fascinates me because I have no idea who they're going to do.
- 10:16They name the position total rushing yards or do they break
- 10:20it down by player? These are by player and I just
- 10:23have three people listed here. In total, or just three Hawks?
- 10:28In total. Yes, so they only put up 1 hawk.
- 10:31Yes. And obviously, it's got to be
- 10:35Washington. Washing I found a new one here
- 10:39so the one that I have here just had Gronowski because of the
- 10:42questions I'm. Sure, a quarterback.
- 10:44DraftKings does have one for Terrell Washington Junior, so he
- 10:49is the only running back that I see listed.
- 10:52And it's impossible to bet because you know how the car the
- 10:55carries are going to break down. Right.
- 10:56Is it going to be his Xavier Williams game?
- 10:58Is it going to be jazzy on Patterson who had a great
- 11:00performance few years ago including that?
- 11:02And when he finally got his opportunity, Lady against
- 11:05Albany. Yes, a worn down.
- 11:07Albany, a worn down Albany. He looked good.
- 11:10He did. I couldn't bet this money with
- 11:12your. I couldn't make this bet with
- 11:13your money. 60 is denouncible for Terrell Washington.
- 11:17What's? Gronowski.
- 11:18Gronowski is 29. Might go over.
- 11:21I think he's going to. I think he's going to have some
- 11:23broken plays. But remember, in college, sacks
- 11:25are a part of it. That's.
- 11:26True. All right, let's do Iowa State.
- 11:28This is equally as intriguing to me because I don't know how
- 11:33those carries are going to break out.
- 11:34And the only guy listed is Carson Hansen.
- 11:36See, I think they're missing. I think Sam is going to lead the
- 11:38team in rushing. Carson Hansen 52 1/2.
- 11:42They don't even list Rocco back. I'll Rocco's also in there, yes,
- 11:45but for running backs, it's just Carson Hansen 52 1/2 the number,
- 11:48Rocco 16 1/2. Remembering that sacks are in
- 11:53there, how many times I would get to?
- 11:56This week they've done they've done a pretty good job of
- 12:01keeping them clean so far. Oh, boy.
- 12:05All right, let's go to let's go to receiving yards.
- 12:08All right. And I do they list Gabe Berkel.
- 12:12Yes, Gabe Berkel is listed in here.
- 12:16Brahmer Eskelsen. And is that it?
- 12:18Those are the three and then two guys for Iowa that I see listed
- 12:22here. And Phillips, is he one of them?
- 12:25Ah, da, da, da. Go back to that page.
- 12:26No. What?
- 12:27Seth Anderson and Jacob Gill are the two Hawkeyes, All right,
- 12:30Bramer, Berkel and Eskelton, the 3-4 Iowa State.
- 12:33So who's got the highest total of those three?
- 12:36It's you, Eskelson. Eskelson is the top 37, 1/2 the
- 12:44number for him. OK.
- 12:45And everybody's Berkel and Bramer both below that.
- 12:47Berkel's 33 1/2, Bramer's just 22 1/2.
- 12:50So where are these 236 yards going to come from?
- 12:53Yeah. Everybody else.
- 12:54Maybe it's a little Townsend sprinkled in there.
- 12:57How about so a? Lot of guys, yeah.
- 12:58When, when are we going to hear from him?
- 13:00I think it's coming. You think it's coming.
- 13:02Think it's coming. Banged up during camp.
- 13:04I think he's going to be there. Maybe they unleash him a little
- 13:07bit more. Yeah, on Saturday.
- 13:08Is there a field goal? Kicking prop?
- 13:11Longest field goal. Let's see here I'm scrolling
- 13:14through, nothing listed. Come on, that's a good one.
- 13:18They just can't be choosers. Well, we can't be here, but I'd
- 13:22love to know because both got both kickers in this game
- 13:25obviously have proven they've got it.
- 13:27They've got some distance behind them.
- 13:29Any time touchdown score, that's a fun market.
- 13:32All right. Your betting favorite is Carson
- 13:35Hanson. Yeah, that's him.
- 13:37That's him. I could see that he's going to
- 13:39get the ball inside the 4-5 yard line.
- 13:42Who's is there a big, big price out there for AI?
- 13:46Don't know a Wegen. Is there a Flora is there?
- 13:51I mean, some of these, some of these special teams guys to take
- 13:54one of the house, both of them are going to score, are going to
- 13:56take one of the house this year. Not saying it's going to happen
- 13:59on Saturday. You can get anytime touchdown
- 14:01score. Well, how about Caden Wechen
- 14:04plus 650? That's it.
- 14:06That's all you want. You can also remember he caught
- 14:08a touchdown. He also plays wide receiver.
- 14:10He does jet sweeps. Yeah, No, no, I need more than
- 14:13that. What about?
- 14:14What about flora? Flora not listed for the anytime
- 14:17touchdown market. All right, who are who's listed?
- 14:20Terrell Washington's the first choice for Iowa.
- 14:22He's plus 140 Rocco on a sneak plus 220 Berkel plus 230
- 14:27Granowski plus 240I like that one.
- 14:30He runs the ball and I think they're going to use him in goal
- 14:32line situations +2. 40 Who's putting these prices out there?
- 14:35I think that I think they're changing you first touchdown
- 14:39score. Yes, that's a fun market.
- 14:41So if it's Iowa State, it's a tight end.
- 14:44Well, if you want a tight end, you can get a good price.
- 14:46How about 15 to one for both Burkle?
- 14:48And Bramer, that's where I'd be shopping.
- 14:49Conversely, when it comes to Iowa, I think they're going to
- 14:56run it in. Washington and Gronowski with
- 14:59the same number, plus 850. Sam Phillips get any love in
- 15:03this exercise? Sam Phillips, first touchdown of
- 15:06the game. He is not listed in that one.
- 15:09Jacob Gill, 18 to 1. Seth Anderson, 20 to 1.
- 15:14They're sold at 22 to one for the first touchdown of the game.
- 15:18Let's see, how about a little Zach Wortworth for you?
- 15:2135 to 1, 2nd and goal from the 2.
- 15:24Little play action or or. See.
- 15:26Not that. This one that you're referring
- 15:28to right now, this was not a prop that would bother me if it
- 15:31was available in the state of Iowa.
- 15:33The first touchdown, first touchdown or just touchdown
- 15:35markets in general? That doesn't bother me because
- 15:38if if you lose your bet there, you can't, you know, attack a
- 15:41player because the quarterback didn't look your way or or you
- 15:45were on the sidelines when you know that you were taken out and
- 15:48here comes Carson Hansen to run the ball in if you bet some on
- 15:51this thing. So that one doesn't bother me,
- 15:53but it's the individual ones that.
- 15:55The yardage, yeah. That type of thing.
- 15:57Because that just leads to a holes.
- 15:59Yeah, it does. And it's, it's unfortunate, but
- 16:02that's the world. And it can lead to chicanery,
- 16:04too. You know, it can real, real
- 16:06quick. Do we?
- 16:07We're going to talk some NFL and we haven't really got into this.
- 16:09Maybe we should do more tomorrow.
- 16:11Have you locked in your survivors ever pick for week #1
- 16:13yet? I haven't locked it in, I
- 16:15haven't sent it in, but I am a very, very strong lean that I'm
- 16:18going to go with the public and I'm going to take Denver, take
- 16:21the Denver Broncos. They will be the top choice.
- 16:23I think they will too. Or will they be because the
- 16:26Eagles now, I mean the the point we talked about to start the
- 16:30show, the point spreads gone the other way the the all favoring
- 16:33Eagles. I think the Eagles are going to
- 16:36get a lot of play on Thursday night.
- 16:37But the Eagles have prime time affairs later in the season,
- 16:41right? Well, I would try and save them,
- 16:43but I think there's a lot of people that would use the
- 16:45Eagles. So I got to tell you who we're
- 16:46playing. And when I first heard who we're
- 16:48playing, I thought, Oh my God, what a waste of money.
- 16:53But the more I think about it, look, we've never seen October.
- 16:57No, that's true. It's not like the my formula has
- 16:59been working. We're playing Jacksonville.
- 17:03Jacksonville at home against Carolina, right?
- 17:07They're a 3 1/2 point favorite. Do you like the pick?
- 17:12No, I just, I've lost too much money on Trevor Lawrence.
- 17:16Yeah. Well, OK.
- 17:17Where are you on Carolina? Are they going to be improved
- 17:20this year? Well, they can't be worse
- 17:21defensively because they're the worst defense in NFL history in
- 17:24terms of points allowed a year ago.
- 17:26So they can't be worse. Huge question marks of wide
- 17:29receivers. Xavier Leggett, I don't know if
- 17:30he has it. They had a young guy that came
- 17:32in that there was getting a lot of buzz.
- 17:33What we saw from from Young at the back half of last year
- 17:36looked good. What was the product of a team
- 17:39that was out of it and just kind of throwing it around?
- 17:43Carolina's going to be better. Yep, I'm with you, but it's not
- 17:46awful. We are taking Jacksonville and I
- 17:51do like this pic and this wasn't one of my radar to begin with.
- 17:54We're going to take the Steelers.
- 17:55Going with the Steelers, we're. Going to take the Steelers to
- 17:57beat the New York Jets. On the road you're going with
- 18:01the road team we're. Going with Aaron Rodgers, we're
- 18:04going on the Road 2. Years ago that didn't go very
- 18:05well in the first game. No, I didn't see much.
- 18:07Of it, no. Yeah, we're going to take the
- 18:11Steelers. Right.
- 18:12Do we? Do we both?
- 18:14We only have two plays, the only two entries this year.
- 18:16Well, it'll probably be 10-7 at the half, Jets, and you're going
- 18:20to. Be you think it will be Oh.
- 18:21Yeah, because the Steelers never win, but.
- 18:23There's so much steam on Pittsburgh, Trent.
- 18:25There's a lot of folks that thinks Pittsburgh's a dark horse
- 18:28Super Bowl. I just need him to win Week 1.
- 18:30Gary Dolphin is coming up next. John Walters will follow Gary in
- 18:33here. Miller and Condon taking you
- 18:35until 2. Glad you're with us on a midweek
- 18:38Wednesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 18:40Network. I'm Hillary Congon, welcome
- 18:46back. Appreciate you being with us on
- 18:48a Wednesday. Still to come this hour, the
- 18:50voice of Iowa State, John Walters, Gary Dolphin
- 18:53momentarily hour number two, David Kaplan off to Chicago.
- 18:57We will go with the cap man in his weekly Wednesday spot.
- 19:00Let's get to Gary Dolphin. You'll be down the hall from us
- 19:04here on 1040 WHO with a Hawkeye call and he joins us.
- 19:08Gary Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on on this Wednesday.
- 19:10How are things with you, Dolph? Hey, Hi, Kenny.
- 19:13Yeah, Trent, good to be on with you guys.
- 19:15Haven't talked in a while. Yeah, it's, it's a wild week as
- 19:19always, but I love it, you know, especially if you're from this
- 19:21state and you've experienced a game, whether in person or
- 19:25listening and hugging your radio or watching.
- 19:28Well done. Yeah.
- 19:30Got me indifferent this week. It should be a great game.
- 19:32No, absolutely isn't. I know it's cliche, but you
- 19:35truly can throw the records out, especially since 97.
- 19:38Was it 98 when everything changed with the with the
- 19:41McCartney finally getting that done and it's been phenomenal
- 19:45ever since then. So let's go back to Week 1.
- 19:47Obviously, no one expected to see Mark Gronowski.
- 19:50There's, you know, a lot of speculation as to what was
- 19:53behind it, nerves, etcetera. Has to be better this week.
- 19:56When you watched him, when you from your perch high above at
- 19:59Kinnock Stadium, what did you see out of the new signal caller
- 20:02for the Hawks, Gary? Well, it's his first game, you
- 20:06know, at this level and he's, he's played Division One teams
- 20:09before. So it's not like he hasn't seen
- 20:12defenses, especially the, the, the likes of Albany.
- 20:16You know, I think he might, I think my view is he pressed too
- 20:19much. I, you know, we know what he can
- 20:21do. He's, he's got 10,000 yards
- 20:24passing. He knows where the end zone
- 20:26IS13334 career touchdowns. And he did throw a touchdown
- 20:30pass and he scored a touchdown pass.
- 20:32Certainly the numbers aren't where Tim Lester wants them to
- 20:36be. And I I just think he pressed
- 20:39too much couple he threw right into the dirt and and that's
- 20:42very unlike him. But first game jitters.
- 20:44I'm not sure. Probably some of that.
- 20:47I can assure you his shoulder is is fine.
- 20:50It has been since June. He's been throwing.
- 20:52I've been watching him in practice.
- 20:54He's throwing very well. Now, granted, he's going up
- 20:57against the Iowa defense in practice every day, but that
- 21:00wasn't the Iowa defense out there last week.
- 21:02So Mark knows he's got to get better and and he will.
- 21:05He's a terrific young guy and he's a he's a very heady
- 21:08quarterback. And I think that's where this
- 21:10game lies Saturday is the improvement of Gronowski at
- 21:13least throwing the football. You know what Rocco Beck has
- 21:16been doing the first two weeks of the season.
- 21:18So as usual, the quarterback position will ultimately decide
- 21:22this, along with a couple of other factors.
- 21:24Year ago Iowa was able to run the football very well coming
- 21:27out party for Caleb Johnson after the first half he against
- 21:29had against Illinois State and then what he get it did against
- 21:32the Cyclones. There will be no Kamari Bolton.
- 21:34So how do you anticipate the running backs are going to be
- 21:37divvied up here? Two years ago Jazzy on Patterson
- 21:40had a tremendous game over in Ames.
- 21:42What do you expect to see a running back coming up this
- 21:44weekend? Well, hopefully more of the same
- 21:47if you're a Hawkeye fan. I mean, and then thank goodness
- 21:49Xavier Williams, now he's been he's been showing that kind of
- 21:54savvy. I mean, for a freshman, he's
- 21:57been showing that kind of savvy all all fall camp.
- 22:00And I think we haven't even mentioned the offensive line
- 22:03yet. And I think that's key.
- 22:05This is this is one of the top rated offensive lines returning.
- 22:08You've got Logan Jones and Jennings Dunker, who were rated
- 22:12by Pro Football Focus the highest at their positions for
- 22:15seniors coming back anyway, and they're both going to be playing
- 22:18on Sunday next year. And then you've got 2 salty
- 22:21guards and Peeper and Bo Stevens and and then obviously left
- 22:26tackle. That's a little bit of a mystery
- 22:28yet, but this kid Lauk from Indianapolis is is the real
- 22:32deal. And Jack Dotzler has gotten good
- 22:34experience, too. You know, it's a little
- 22:37disappointing to me last week that the tight ends weren't more
- 22:39involved, particularly Astringa. They've got good tight ends with
- 22:43Ortworth and Astringa. Maybe not the TJ Hawkinson or
- 22:46Sam Laporta level, but, but they're very, very good.
- 22:49So I look for those guys to be more active.
- 22:51You know, I heard something chuckled this week.
- 22:53Well, Iowa wasn't showing much last week for Iowa State.
- 22:57Yeah. OK.
- 22:59Well, hopefully they show it all this week then.
- 23:01But I I think you'll see a much more active offense.
- 23:04The defense just keeps doing what they're doing.
- 23:06But to the running game, whether it's Xavier, you know, he's 225
- 23:11lbs. He reminds me a lot of Caleb
- 23:13Johnson. And who knew who Caleb Johnson
- 23:15was a year at this time? And so that this might be the
- 23:19the the second X man that has a a breakout year for the
- 23:23Hawkeyes. And you know, behind him, Jazz
- 23:25Patterson is longer and lankier and can hit the hole.
- 23:29He's got great speed. Ty Washington is a terrific
- 23:34speedster. They used him a lot, as you guys
- 23:36know, on the slot last year and ran jet sweeps with him and and
- 23:40look for maybe some of that. But I think they've got a not a
- 23:43three headed monster, but certainly a three headed group
- 23:46of guys that now that Xavier's had a game under his belt, I
- 23:50look for the running game to be solid.
- 23:52It has to be if they're going to win the game on the road.
- 23:54You know, when it comes, when it comes to Iowa, you know, tight
- 23:56end you, etcetera, they've had, they've had such an
- 23:59embarrassment of richness. Some of those positions, you
- 24:01know, there's one that I think kind of gets overlooked a little
- 24:03bit, and that's the return game. And they've been blessed with
- 24:06some great ones and I think they've got another one.
- 24:08This Ouijan, every time I watch him play Gary, it seems like
- 24:12they've got him bottled up and he finds a way to get out of,
- 24:15get out of it and find a hold and just keep running.
- 24:18I think Ouijan's going to go down as, you know, a part of
- 24:20that group that was that. I was been so fortunate to flip
- 24:23the field. When it comes to kick and punt
- 24:26returns, Ouijan's a good one. That's a great point, Kenny.
- 24:29I go back to what Albany coach, Coach Ambrose said last week.
- 24:34And you know, he's had, he was offensive coordinator at
- 24:36Delaware when they had great offenses with the Blue Hens.
- 24:39So he knows something about kids that can score and can take it
- 24:43to the other end. And that punt that Ouijian
- 24:46fielded last week, running about 20 yards with a full out Sprint
- 24:51to catch the ball, the wind was playing tricks with it and and
- 24:55caught it at his kneecaps and then still shook two or three
- 24:59tacklers and got 18 yards on the punt return.
- 25:01That's what he does now. If he gets in the open, he's
- 25:03gone because he's got great speed and, and I'm sure Coach
- 25:07Campbell and his staff have, especially the special teams
- 25:10folks have looked at Weijia long and hard.
- 25:13I mean, they've seen him for a couple of years now.
- 25:15But he is so excited, excited to be playing as a receiver, a slot
- 25:20receiver as well as return. He can't get on the field
- 25:23enough. That's what he'll tell you.
- 25:25And so he's an excited he's he's he's a kind of a, a mini version
- 25:28of Tim Dwight. I'm not saying he's Tim Dwight
- 25:31the man. He can make it happy and he
- 25:32won't happen. And he wants to touch the
- 25:34football, kind of like Cooper De Jean did when he was here.
- 25:37He hated to call for a fair catch, but the region's the same
- 25:40way. And look for him to make a play.
- 25:43You know, you guys have watched this series almost as long as I
- 25:46am. This typically comes down to a
- 25:47turnover or a special teams play or a great field goal kick like
- 25:52last year for the kid from Iowa State.
- 25:55So don't be surprised if that happens again.
- 25:57I think what 10 of the last 13 games have been 10 points or
- 26:01less and I think the last 7 or 8 have ended in A1 score game or
- 26:06seven of the last 8. So it, it is what it is.
- 26:09It's Iowa State. It's in state.
- 26:11If you like the clones, if you like the Hawks, if you don't
- 26:14even follow football, the state grinds to a stop to either
- 26:17listen or watch this game. That's what it is.
- 26:20Great game and really going to be a fun one.
- 26:22Iowa State favored by three, 3 1/2 in the market right now.
- 26:25Hey, Dolph, let's jump over to the defense.
- 26:27A lot of new faces out there. A lot of guys that getting their
- 26:30first extensive reps, including Jaden Harrell in the middle,
- 26:34Zach Luttmer. What do you see as some of those
- 26:35new faces defensively on Saturday?
- 26:38Well, Luttmer, I really love he. He kind of emerged in the
- 26:41second-half of the season last year on special teams, I might
- 26:44add, and then and then got a shot on some third downs and
- 26:48some run contained. He's a big burly kid from
- 26:51northwest Iowa and he'll hit you.
- 26:53He'll drive you into next week and he'll he'll be a great
- 26:56compliment to when they go to the cash and they they they can
- 27:01drop him down there. But he and Wampa should be a a
- 27:03pair of outstanding safeties as the season wears on corner.
- 27:07I thought TJ Lee and and excuse me, TJ Hall and Deshawn Lee
- 27:13played much better in the second-half than the first half.
- 27:15You know, they need to step their game up a level or two
- 27:17this year up front. No worries, except for depth at
- 27:21the one tackle. They're a little thin there
- 27:23simply because they've lost so many good players.
- 27:25Why a black? Most most notably of late, but
- 27:28Aaron Graves is an All American and in waiting you got two of
- 27:32the better defensive ends in Llewellyn and and Herkut.
- 27:35So what what kind of pressure do they want to put on Rocco Beck
- 27:40him in the box almost every year we say that about the Iowa State
- 27:44quarterback Purdy to to Beck got to keep him inside the the hash
- 27:49marks. If they get outside they're
- 27:51very, very lethal. The linebackers you got both
- 27:54Jaden Harrell and Jaden Montgomery, who played a lot
- 27:57last week. I I don't know if that that
- 27:59position has been settled yet, but Carson Shire and Jackson Rex
- 28:04Roth are definitely slotted in at those two other outside
- 28:07linebacker spots. And then those 3 red shirt
- 28:11freshmen are biting through iron just waiting to get in there.
- 28:14You saw a little bit of Preston Reece last week.
- 28:16What he's going to be what he is, but I can tell you and
- 28:20watching Cam Buffington from Winfield and Derek Montrose from
- 28:25from Williamsburg, you know, Seth Wallace said.
- 28:28You know, they're going to get down the field eventually as to
- 28:30when we just got to keep him patient.
- 28:33And that's hard to do when you know those three kids because
- 28:36they're they're the future of the position for sure.
- 28:38No doubt about it. Last thing for me, I let Trent
- 28:40finish up with the Gary. Appreciate you coming on.
- 28:42Obviously a milestone potentially if I was to win.
- 28:45I got to think you've called all of them unless you had a family
- 28:48engagement. All of Kirk's wins as he's about
- 28:51to become college football's all time winning as coach.
- 28:54Guessing when he got here, nobody saw this one coming, but
- 28:57kind of a feather in your cap that you've been on the
- 29:00microphone for all of them. Yeah, 205 of them, Ken and and
- 29:04and of course, 120 losses or whatever it is, but it's he is
- 29:09such a low key far the furthest you could be from patting
- 29:16himself on the back. He he doesn't want to hear about
- 29:19two O 6 this week or next week or the week after.
- 29:24Whenever it happens. He lives for the moment.
- 29:27He loves to coach. He said, I don't play golf.
- 29:29I don't play tennis. I'm going to coach and enjoy my
- 29:3214 grandkids. And he's he stayed that way
- 29:35consistently. And you know, he'll he'll be
- 29:38he'll if it happens Saturday, he'll be he'll be very emotional
- 29:41in the locker room. We all we've all watched coach
- 29:44shed a lot of tears down through the years.
- 29:46But you know, last Friday night and seeing the Hall of Fame get
- 29:51together in Iowa City, Bob Bullsby went into the end of the
- 29:54hall, the letter winners Hall of Fame.
- 29:56And, and I asked him about the, the coaching hire 26 years ago.
- 30:01And he said, well, Kirk wasn't the popular hire, obviously, but
- 30:06he he said he turned out pretty good.
- 30:08And, and what Bob Bullsby said he saw in him was a guy that is
- 30:12so organized and is such a hard line coach and loves being
- 30:17around kids, loves being around practice, almost enjoy spring
- 30:20ball more than any other time of the year because he doesn't have
- 30:23to worry about an opponent. I mean, that's who he is, you
- 30:26know, from blue collar Pittsburgh and to think he's
- 30:30lasted 2526 years at in this day and age of college football is
- 30:35truly remarkable and I don't see him giving it up anytime soon.
- 30:39So Dolph will let you go on this.
- 30:40What's it going to take for the Hawkeyes to pull the upset?
- 30:42A spot they haven't been very often in this series, an
- 30:46underdog? What's it going to take on
- 30:47Saturday to get the W? Mark Gronowski's got to be Mark
- 30:51Gronowski. You know, the running game.
- 30:54I, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cyclone stack 789 guys
- 30:57in the box until Gronowski proves himself and, and I think
- 31:01he'll step up and play much better.
- 31:02But to me, it still comes back to special teams.
- 31:06You know, the Hawkeyes got an All American kicker and they've
- 31:08got a freshman All American punter now a sophomore and field
- 31:11position is so important for the Iowa defense and if you can make
- 31:15him drive the field 12/13/14 plays, odds are good to even
- 31:19Rocco Beck can make a mistake and and that's what I was hoping
- 31:22on. Great stuff Dolph, appreciate
- 31:24you doing this for us, Gary. Really do enjoy the game
- 31:27Saturday. Thank you.
- 31:28OK, guys. Good to be with you.
- 31:30Good to talk to you, Gary Dolphin, Voice of Iowa.
- 31:32John Walters, The Voice of Iowa State.
- 31:34Next. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 31:35Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 31:38Welcome back, 1245 David Kaplan, Hour number two, Frank Schwab,
- 31:42yahoosports.com. Thanks to Gary Dolphin.
- 31:45Let's get the voice of Iowa State.
- 31:46He's John Walters. He'll have the call down the
- 31:49other hall from where we sit on 100.3.
- 31:52The bust, the flagship here in Iowa, John Trenton, Ken, thanks
- 31:56for finding time for us. You know what I want to put out
- 31:58there before we get into the game itself.
- 32:00I can't tell you how I'm impressed by kind of the the
- 32:03game day officer who's ever in charge.
- 32:06I watched AK State team almost get beat after their trip to
- 32:09Dublin and I thought coming into the South Dakota game that this
- 32:12team's going to it's going to linger the jet lag, blah, blah,
- 32:16blah. That was not the case at all at
- 32:19Jack Tri Stadium. Meanwhile, K State's night and
- 32:22day. I think those people deserve a
- 32:23ton of credit for having this team prepared not only to go
- 32:27over there, but then to come back and be ready to go.
- 32:30No, I totally agree. All that homework they did on
- 32:32the way NFL teams handled it and other college teams have handled
- 32:36it through the years, I think really paid off.
- 32:38And Matt had the full attention of his players, you know, and he
- 32:41said something this week when he was asked about kind of the
- 32:43extra juice that comes with the side Hawk game.
- 32:47And he said, yeah, there there is some extra juice.
- 32:49But he said you can't let that affect the way you prepare for a
- 32:53game. You know, it has to be the same
- 32:54every single week. And so I think that was really
- 32:58evident last week. I mean, I think that really
- 33:00showed that they do treat every game and every preparation the
- 33:03same way, because that was a classic example of a place where
- 33:07it could really hurt you if you didn't.
- 33:08And boy, they looked really sharp.
- 33:11They did and ready to go from the get go.
- 33:14Offense was clicking and 19 of 20 for Rocco backed.
- 33:18It feels like he has elevated his game to yet another level of
- 33:22what we saw in Ireland, what we see here.
- 33:24What have you seen from him? A guy that certainly put in the
- 33:26work to hone his craft and how he seemingly has taken that next
- 33:30step here in another season as a starter.
- 33:33Well, I don't know if I've ever heard somebody affectionately
- 33:36refer to someone as a psychopath, but that's what
- 33:39Taylor Mauser referred to Rocco as yesterday.
- 33:41And he was complimenting his preparation and how much he
- 33:45handles adversity well and and all those little things that are
- 33:48intangibles that make for a great quarterback.
- 33:50And I think Rocco has just matured so much.
- 33:53And, you know, he has such a command.
- 33:56I think that's the word I keep coming back to is he's in
- 33:59command, you know, command of the huddle, command of standing
- 34:03there at the line of scrimmage, watching how the defense is
- 34:05reacting and what he can do to change the play, perhaps command
- 34:08of practice, just command of the team.
- 34:10You know, he's a captain and he just, it always feels like he's
- 34:14in charge and he's comfortable with that.
- 34:15He feels great in that role and it gives you a great feeling as
- 34:19a football team because you always feel like he's going to
- 34:21make a play when it matters most.
- 34:23We saw that last year when they had five go ahead drives in the
- 34:28final moments of games. That's incredible to do in one
- 34:31season and he was at the heart of all of that, including the
- 34:34win in Iowa City. And so it does give you a lot of
- 34:36confidence as a football team to have a guy like that, especially
- 34:39at that position. Xavier Townsend looks as though
- 34:42he's got a whole lot of shake and a whole lot of game and we
- 34:45didn't see that over in Dublin. Got a glimpse of it last week,
- 34:48John and when he got the football in his hands, Certainly
- 34:51fun to watch and dangerous seemingly.
- 34:54Do you anticipate, should Cyclone fans anticipate, that
- 34:57his role will just continue to grow as he gets over what was
- 35:00ailing him during the fall camp and more comfortable in his with
- 35:04his new role at Cyclone football?
- 35:07100% I think that's true. I think absolutely.
- 35:10And I was talking to Eric Cap today and Eric said his number
- 35:13one take away from the game against South Dakota was not so
- 35:16much Rocco, because he knew he would be good and he was and all
- 35:20the other things that happened. But he said Xavier Townsend was
- 35:23his number one take away from that game to get him showing a
- 35:26little bit of what he can do because they need somebody
- 35:29that's a playmaker, you know, in that role.
- 35:32And Jalen Dole gave him so much of that a year ago.
- 35:35And so, yeah, I think Townsend's role will continue to increase.
- 35:38Obviously, he's the guy that can return punts and kicks to if you
- 35:41need him to. He's a guy that we saw the end
- 35:44of round last week where he scored the touchdown.
- 35:47You find different creative ways to make sure to get the ball in
- 35:49his hands. And just like they did with
- 35:52Jaylen Nolan, I think that's a great fit with Taylor Mauser
- 35:54because I think he loves the creativity part of trying to
- 35:58find a way to put the ball in a playmaker's hands and give him a
- 36:00little space. And you know, football,
- 36:02basketball, any sport, to me, it's the offensive team is all
- 36:05about trying to create space and the defensive team is about
- 36:08trying to take it away. And Mouse is pretty good at
- 36:11creating some space. And if he can get Townsend out
- 36:13there with some room to do that wiggling, there could be some
- 36:17juicy wiggles happening at Jack Tracy Stadium on Saturday.
- 36:20You know, the tight end position has been built into a strength
- 36:22here recently for Iowa State and maybe they got the best group
- 36:25they've ever had and they had a couple of good ones a couple of
- 36:28years back. Bramer, an absolute nightmare
- 36:30matchup, 6 foot 7, the athleticism that he has and Gabe
- 36:34Burkle, well, he continues to turn heads.
- 36:36The other, the crazy thing is John, they've had plenty of
- 36:39times where they've had a tight end or two, but you go Tyler
- 36:41Moore, what he's been giving him, Cooper Alexander looks like
- 36:43he's got a bright future. They have depth at this position
- 36:46unlike anything I can remember. Yeah, that's exactly accurate.
- 36:51You know, when they had Charlie Koehler and Dylan Saner and
- 36:54Chase Allen all at the same time and they played three tight end
- 36:58personnel frequently, they were playing to their strengths and
- 37:03it created match up nightmares for opponents.
- 37:05And I think this group is doing the exact same thing.
- 37:07And you know, Keaton Roscopf is another guy that can get in
- 37:10there at that kind of that full back type spot along with Tyler
- 37:13Moore and create some havoc that way.
- 37:16And Trip Walsh is a good football player.
- 37:18I mean, the list keeps going. And you you mentioned Cooper
- 37:20Alexander. We haven't even seen him catch a
- 37:22pass yet. And he's going to he's going to
- 37:25be a terrific pass catcher for Iowa State.
- 37:27But they had 13 receptions from their tight ends last week.
- 37:31I said to Taylor Mauser today, would you like to see that
- 37:33number closer to 20? He said, yeah, actually 25 or 30
- 37:36would be right at my wheelhouse. So yeah, it's fun to see those
- 37:40guys so involved and I do. You mentioned the nightmare part
- 37:43of it. That's exactly what it is for
- 37:44defensive coordinator, because we saw at times last week Hanson
- 37:48and Sama both on the field at the same time.
- 37:50We saw plays where Iowa State had one tight end, 2 tight ends,
- 37:53three tight ends, 4 tight ends in the game at the same time.
- 37:57And there's so many different things you have to prepare for
- 38:00that it's got that would be kind of a headache for defensive
- 38:03coordinators to know that there's all these formations and
- 38:06all these looks that I was thinking give you.
- 38:08And then you've got a quarterback that can see what
- 38:10the defense is reacting to and adjust it on the fly.
- 38:13I love the fact that Rocco's been sent up there, some of
- 38:16those 14 personnel moments with multiple plays in mind and
- 38:20they'll split them out wide if their defense reacts a certain
- 38:22way or keep them in tight. And it's just up to him.
- 38:26And so love that versatility. And I think it really creates
- 38:29some problems for teams trying to get ready.
- 38:31Yeah, I think Roscop was the one that threw the block on Beck's
- 38:34touchdown in Dublin with that edge rusher that looked like he
- 38:37had Rocco dead to rights. And here comes Roscop across the
- 38:39grain and just picked him off and Beck just sashayed into the
- 38:44end zone. Well, what's the key to this
- 38:46game in your mind, John? How is Iowa State going to knock
- 38:48off the Hawks? They're favored to do so by
- 38:51about a field goal. How does Iowa State win this
- 38:53game in your mind? We've got about a minute left,
- 38:55John. Sure.
- 38:56I think #1 slow the run of Iowa, which is so much easier said
- 39:00than done. Terrific running backs, great
- 39:02offensive line, great tight ends.
- 39:04They're going to want to establish that run game.
- 39:06And last year they were 18 punts, I mean, starting each
- 39:10other down in the game of chicken and, you know, both
- 39:13trying to establish the run. But what you saw happened last
- 39:15year was I was stayed. And this is the second part for
- 39:17me. They got away from saying, OK,
- 39:19we're going to run it on 1st down every time.
- 39:21And that's when they opened up the offense a little bit more.
- 39:24And we heard Coach Mauser say this week that he's not afraid
- 39:27to fail. I think Iowa State has to be
- 39:29more multiple on 1st down and not predictable and throw the
- 39:33ball some and you know they threw for about 3 times as many
- 39:36yards as they rushed for a year ago.
- 39:38They might have to do that again.
- 39:39It worked, they won. It would do whatever it takes to
- 39:42move the ball and move those chains.
- 39:43John, thanks for popping on. Appreciate it on game week.
- 39:46Know you're busy. Thank you, John.
- 39:48Enjoy the game. We'll talk to down the road.
- 39:49Appreciate it, John. Sounds good.
- 39:51Thanks guys. Yeah.
- 39:51Good to talk to John Walters, the voice of Iowa State.
- 39:54Thank you to him. Thank you to Gary Dolphin, both
- 39:56voices with their thoughts on Cyhawk 2025.
- 40:01I think I found a a key combo of numbers for you.
- 40:06OK, Speaking of Rocco, with a clean pocket, Rocco is 31 of
- 40:114273.8 percent, 436 yards, 5 touchdowns, no interceptions
- 40:16under pressure, 2 of 625 yards. Hasn't had a lot of pressure but
- 40:20hasn't been good when it's there.
- 40:22But you can't get pressure with the blitz because it gets the
- 40:25blitz. Rocco backed 11 of 16150 yards,
- 40:283 touchdowns. Iowa's front 4 has to generate
- 40:32pressure. Well, they got the guys.
- 40:34They got the guys it this, this is one of the kind of behind the
- 40:39game, within the game, you know, watching is, is Iowa State's
- 40:42offensive line better? Is.
- 40:44It going to hold up, is it? Going to hold up.
- 40:45Brendan Black's numbers from PFF have not been good.
- 40:48No, I should've seen this is his first game as a freshman when we
- 40:52both were like wow they got something here.
- 40:54Hour 2, Cappy kicks it off Frank Schwab on the kickoff of the
- 41:00NFL. Miller and Condon one hour to
- 41:01go. Thanks for being with us, Iowa
