- 0:00SPEAKER_01: And try to see if
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: that can become a real thing.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Well, would you consider self -pubbing considering you have such an loyal audience on Substack?
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Have you noticed very many artists doing self - published graphic memoirs?
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Well, It's interesting because my friend Sophia just did a self-pub, not a self-pub,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: a graphic memoir.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It's a great memoir.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: It's a graphic memoir called Film Nerds.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And she did it through, I think, Andrews McMill Publishing.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I'm not 100%.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And Hilary Campbell did the same thing.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: She did The Joy of Snacking, which is another illustrated graphic memoir.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: They're two great New Yorker cartoonists.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: They're really fun writing style and drawing style.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And I think they...
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: After this sort of process, they were kind of going,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I wonder if I would have had more fun and success with this.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And by success, I mean, like,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: there's just like less pressure to like hit all these benchmarks
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: with the marketing department and the distribution and sales team and all this sort
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: of stuff and having to, you know,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: curate it to whatever the market wants this second.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: If I just sell pub, you know, and I do think about that.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I do think like, you know, sometimes if you do sell pub, I'm looking at Nishant.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you know Nishant, Jen.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: He's self-pubbing and he's crowdfunded this book.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: He already hit the, I mean, within, I think, like 48 hours or something,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: he hit his goal of crowdfunding his new book because he went
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: with a traditional publisher previously and he wasn't totally thrilled
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: with how it all kind of went.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: He didn't write the book that he wanted to write.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Yes, I understand.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: I think with a graphic memoir, I probably need the help of an editor to tell you the truth.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And I think just the body of work would be so intense.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I think maybe for something like a thinking in watercolor type book,
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: maybe it could be a little bit more of a self-published book.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I'm not against the idea.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I think I've been around the block a couple of times now,
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: so I would know more about how to leverage it to make it work for me too.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: But I think it depends on the book and maybe something a little bit more niche,
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: a little bit more specific.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Why not be a good idea? Yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Your book is great.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's kind of a timeless book and I know that it took you a while to make,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: but it is a very useful thing, especially for people who, you know,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: they're not trained artists.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: You know, they're people who are curious.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: They're curious about the form.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: They're curious about, you know,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: they've probably always kind of been wanting to do it or they've always kind of,
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Wanted to sort of read about someone else's journey with it.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And it's a really nice, low pressure kind of read in that sense.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: You know, there's no like, hey, it's not prescriptive is what I'm trying to say.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, it has a point of view, you know, I think.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: I'm unfortunately read some Amazon reviews.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Don't ever read the reviews for yourself.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: It's a really good exercise, but um I think Thank you.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Know a lot of people have said like oh it's not what I thought it was
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: or it's different or but that's kind
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: of what makes it stand out you know it's just yes it's not about copying things
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: that you see it's more of the philosophy of using watercolor and looking
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: at the world around you and I think that's what's interesting about being
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: an artist It's not
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: about the rules of how you should or shouldn't do things.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And once again, I wrote a post on Substack recently,
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: which I thought was kind of interesting,
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: but was about looking to the past to figure out what's in the future.
