- 1:41Hey there, friends. Welcome back to Trust Your Inner Sense. And before we begin, I just want to send out a heartfelt thank you to Emily Sobers for leaving such a beautiful review.
- 1:53Not only did she leave a review, but she's one of our stylist community. She actually sent me a t-shirt from her gorgeous salon. So Emily shared that the podcast inspires us to share our stories so we can encourage and support one another. And that truly captures the intention behind these conversations. So Emily, thank you for highlighting that. And if you're, if you haven't subscribed yet, please do so. And if you feel inspired to write a review, I would absolutely love that. So thank you, Emily.
- 2:24Well, today's guest is somebody that I'm super, super excited about.
- 2:29We've, you know, known and respected one another for so many, so many years. I can't even know. I mean, we should have talked about how many years that is, Jeannie, but this is Jeannie Girnaud and she She's the founder of Beauty Heroes and a passionate advocate for healthier, more conscious beauty. What I love about Jeannie's story is that it began with a deeply personal experience and a desire to create something better, not just for herself, but for us all. Through her work, Jeannie has helped countless people discover products that they can trust while raising the standard for ingredient integrity, sustainability,
- 3:09and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: live lighter, love more. is a beautiful reminder that the choices we make every day can support both our own well-being and the health of the planet. I'm so grateful to have her here today. Please join me in welcoming Jeanne Girnaud. Jeanne, thank you so much for taking the time to come and talk with me today. This is so much fun, and I feel like a little bit long overdue. I mean, you're right here in our backyard, but it doesn't seem like we get to see each other as often as I would love. Yeah, well, we can certainly change that.
- 3:43and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And like, you know, I do feel like I see you and Greg are so active, and so busy and doing so much that it is really truly inspiring to me. Oh, thank you. Well, you know, one of the things that I love most about your message is, you know, the idea of living lighter and loving more and not compromising not only ourselves but the planet. You're like such a huge advocate for or underlining that as we are. But sometimes I think we have so many messages that that part of the consciousness or the idea that when we're using less and consuming less, we're actually helping the planet. So I don't know, I feel like, yeah, that is just so inspiring for me. And I don't know, I would love to know a little bit more about, like, you know, how that inspiration came to you and maybe who you were before entrepreneurship, because I've kind of only known you as an entrepreneur. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I think Live Lighter really for me is aspirational in the sense that I really come from a place of balance. I don't feel like I am really advocating for us all, like really doing something extreme in our lives, just really coming to a place of balance. and doing things that make sense. I feel like there's more than enough for everyone. And there is really this opportunity to serve our planet by just being in balance. It doesn't mean we have to do something super extreme. And that's how I've always felt about— it's really just a common sense approach to our lifestyles. And that's how I started Beauty Heroes. That's the mindset that I went through my entire career. And so to answer your question, before being an entrepreneur, I was actually, I was a career, I had a whole career as a spa director. I grew up in Hawaii and I like to say that like the hotel lobbies of Waikiki were my playground. Oh. And yeah, and I basically grew up in the hospitality industry experiencing it and I ended up sort of naturally going to school to study hospitality management. I thought I wanted to work in fine dining restaurants because I loved creating this memorable experience around food.
- 6:18and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And what I discovered— so I studied hospitality management, I actually went into fine dining, and I found that that lifestyle was really not that unsustainable. You really have to throw your whole body into that career. And At that, right at that sort of inflection moment, spas were starting to really become a real part of the hospitality industry where it like you could study it, you could, you know, it was disciplined. And so I sort of went into spa and then started learning about products and ingredients, just like in food, right? Like you have all, you know, the quality of the product, the finished product really comes from the quality of the starting ingredients. And so I really brought that approach to when I was looking at product from sort of that background in food. And it was just common sense to me, like, right, you would only want to put things on your body, hair, skin that were good for you. And that was sort of what kicked off my lifelong journey in Trying to understand ingredients in our products.
- 7:34and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Yeah, that's amazing. I want to just dial it back for a minute to the hotel lobbies of Waikiki, because I wouldn't have been the person that would have known what you were talking about. And I'm sure a lot of my listeners maybe have never been there before, to Waikiki. But my son actually went to the University of Hawaii. So I had the pleasure of being able to, you know, go back there many times. And I think, is it the Outrigger? I mean, it's been so many years. Is that the beautiful one in the Right toward, uh, at the beach right there. Is that the Outrigger or is— There are so many more hotels than when I grew up, but when I grew up, like there was like the Hilton Hawaiian Village and there was the, you know, all these like really the Moana Hotel, all these, you know, beautiful luxury hotels that line the beach, the Royal Hawaiian. Yeah. And I, and I think with the first time that I saw that area was I was kind of astounded. Like, I didn't realize that that's kind of what Hawaii was as well. Like, just, it feels like this really kind of cool little city within— I mean, and I'm sure it was, it's much more built up then. But do you have a story or something like that that you can kind of share with our listeners to give them the vibe of what it's like over there? Because it's so different than any place in the United States.
- 8:54and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Well, I just went back there in April, and I hadn't been back in quite a few years. And, and so I grew up in Hawaii in the, like, late '70s, '80s, and early '90s. Okay. So it is a little bit of a different Hawaii than it is now. But actually going back this year, what I was reminded was how, you know, sure, a lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same.
- 9:25and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Hawaii definitely has a hospitality vibe that I haven't experienced many places in the world. The aloha spirit is just really special and welcoming. And I think, you know, people really do want to share Hawaii with the world respectfully and be respected, you know, the islands. But Hawaii is so much more than Waikiki. I just happened to live— my parents were immigrants.
- 9:55and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: They landed in Hawaii. And Hawaii in the'80s was— it was just such a melting pot.
- 10:02and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Mm-hmm. It was, you know, it was like a little bit of like old Hawaii was kind of modernizing. So I sort of like saw like new hotels and new developments and the convention center was all being built. Now it is the, the, you know, Honolulu and the Waikiki of today. But it, you know, I definitely have those memories of like old, old Hawaii, and they're very special. And if you were there at that time or know people, you know, we kind of all have that same collective memory. Yeah. Did you just run around in your bathing suit all the time? Is that— that's kind of like what I— Yeah, I did.
- 10:40and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: I always like joke about that, that like we literally Didn't we just— I went to a girls' school and we wore a uniform and we just wore our bikinis under our uniform and we'd like go swimming at lunch.
- 10:52and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: We'd tan during lunch, you know, and I mean, it was just, it was really fun. It was really, really fun. Love that. Okay, well, now we're going to fast forward. I just had to flash back for a second because I wanted to hear a little bit about that.
- 11:06and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And that sounds absolutely like an amazing childhood. And then, you know, getting into hospitality And then, you know, this idea of becoming a spa manager and everything like that.
- 11:18and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And, you know, just maybe heading towards entrepreneurship. I guess what I'm wondering is when did that quiet whisper become impossible to ignore? And when did you take the leap or what was the turning point from taking the leap to being a spa director and then being an entrepreneur, then moving into being an entrepreneur? Yeah, it's one of the things I wish I had started younger. I mean, I think everything happens right on time ultimately, but I see younger entrepreneurs these days and I have a little bit of envy because it takes so much energy. I really started Beauty Heroes. I was like 37, 38, and, you know, going to hospitality school and I was really sort of directed by, you know, everyone around me. to have a career.
- 12:13and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And I honestly just feel like I went through life and no one ever— entrepreneurship wasn't presented as an option. Mm-hmm.
- 12:25and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So I think throughout my younger years, I had ideas for things that I might have wanted to do and even kind of wrote some business plans. On paper and in my head, but never really felt like I had the confidence to pursue that or even the opportunity or the option. So it really was sort of me. I had to grow up and grow into like a fully formed, like, adult. Who is really thinking for themselves and thinking, wait a second, this actually could be an option. And that had to really come from inside me. And that's what happened.
- 13:16and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Yeah. Well, I know you have a very personal story.
- 13:20and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Would you be willing to share that? Yeah. Well, I think, you know, I— so the idea for Beauty Heroes, I will say, first of all, my My interest in ingredients and healthy beauty came from just really a desire to ensure that I was making decisions that would make sure that the people that were coming to my spas had only healthy ingredients put on them. I was very concerned with other people's health, and I didn't want to make decisions that would negatively impact their health. And I had learned early on in my career there were ingredients to avoid and I was doing my best to avoid them. And that really kicked off my journey in just trying to understand products and formulas and ingredients. But when I was 31, 32 and wanted to start thinking about having a baby, I was diagnosed with infertility and I was diagnosed with a hormone disorder and infertility.
- 14:29and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And it was so interesting because I had up until that point just been like the most healthy person. I'd never really had a health concern. I wouldn't even really know how to navigate that. I was very lucky. And so to be diagnosed with something was just a new experience for me. And I, it really forces you to, to look inside. And it's even more, I would say it's more, even more daunting because here you are wanting to like have a baby, which is really, you know, when you're thinking about it, first of all, you have your partner that's involved and you're sort of wanting to like, you know, that's, that's one thing you want to be successful. But you also want to like have life and, you know, have another person. And so it's just this, you know, it was really kind of this big deal for me as it is for so many of us.
- 15:29and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And, and I was just like, gosh, you know, in my work, I was really thinking about talking a lot about hormone disrupting ingredients. And then in my personal life, I was thinking a lot about this hormone disorder that I was diagnosed with. It was PCOS, which has now evolved into something else, which is such a great evolution and understanding of that condition. And I, one day, it just like this light bulb went off. I was like, oh my gosh, hormone disruptors, hormone disorder. I've got a hormone disorder. Mm-hmm.
- 16:07and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And I really need to maybe look at the hormone disruptor.
- 16:11and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And all of a sudden, I was always so concerned with how these ingredients would be affecting other people. And for— it was just fascinating. I was like, oh my gosh, I really need to look at how this is affecting me. And so as the story goes, I really took a magnifying glass to everything in my home and discovered that there were like hormone disrupting ingredients in like my mouthwash and in my laundry detergent and in my you know, shampoo. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 16:49and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Because in the spa industry, we were, you know, in my spa, day-to-day spa life, I wasn't really working so much with hair care because I wasn't working in a salon. So hair care was a little bit like, you know, you had hair care in your locker rooms for your, you know, but you weren't really like, you know, vetting brands for that. And so I wasn't looking at it in that way.
- 17:11and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So I was now like finding it in my hair care.
- 17:15and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And so that was— and, you know, it's so interesting because shortly after I did that, that was like year 2 and a half where I finally made that connection. So I had spent like 3 years in a deep infertility depression. Wow. Basically from diagnosis to like conception. And it was 2 or 3 months before I actually got pregnant naturally that I had really taken that magnifying glass to everything in my home. And I do think that like the hormone disruptors, first of all, nobody really knows how they affect anybody's specific body.
- 18:00and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And It was— I feel like for me, it was like that subtle shift of, you know, and also maybe just the awareness, right? Where I was like, oh, all of a sudden I'm taking care of myself to a new level. And I ended up getting pregnant naturally and having a really successful pregnancy. So, yeah, it was personal. It was professional and turned personal.
- 18:28and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Wow, that's incredible. Well, for you, it seems like, you know, you really had to educate yourself. Like, can you tell me a little bit more about that? Like where you started and how that all, you know, I mean, it sounds like it was probably very empowering for you to be able to do that, to kind of take your own health. Can you tell me a little bit more about that journey? I mean, what was that like? Yeah, I mean, I think I started educating myself on ingredients first by asking questions of of the brands that I was working with in, in my work. And then what I discovered was that people didn't really know what was in their products. I'm talking about, you know, a long time ago. Now there's definitely a lot more education out there, but there was no internet. And even the early days of the internet didn't have ingredient information on them.
- 19:24and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: The early days of the internet were like MySpace, right? And like being able to find a restaurant and maybe download their menu. So it took a really long time for the internet to be what the resource that it is today, where you can look up studies, where you can look up, you know, you can find different perspectives.
- 19:43and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And so I started out educating myself with textbooks, and I would create like cheat sheets and index cards, and I had them on my desk in my office as a spa director. And when I would get products sent to me, and be looking at them, I would literally look at the back of the ingredient list and pull out my index cards or pull out my textbooks. Okay. And that's kind of how I went along my education and then applied that to my personal life. And, you know, when I was looking for ingredients in my home, but that was very, very like, you know, expert levels, like a lot of work. And I think that's what kind of led me to want to start Beauty Heroes. I was like, it shouldn't be this much work to be able to know what's in your products. And it still is so much work. It's in many ways, as you probably know from, you know, working with Innersense, that there's so much ingredient innovation, which is wonderful. There's a lot of positives that are coming from it. And yet it just creates more information for us to understand and know. Absolutely. You know, so yeah. Yeah. No, that's amazing. That's incredible. Yeah, the textbooks. I love that. I love that. And the note cards. Whoa. Yeah.
- 21:14and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Well, geez, one of them— do you? Good for you. I still have index cards. Yeah. That, that would be a good art, like a good art projects or something like that. Like OG, like now they're apps, Right? Yeah, exactly. Well, I mean, I love hearing about your story about your pregnancy, and that's incredible that you were able to successfully get pregnant. And I know you love being a mom, and I would love to talk a little bit about Charles, if that's okay with you.
- 21:48and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And the first question I have is, how has becoming a becoming a mother changed things for you?
- 21:56and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: I think you— it puts, puts so much in perspective.
- 22:00and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: I think that being a mom is the easiest thing for me. I feel very lucky for that. Like, that's the fun part of my, uh, life.
- 22:16and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So I would say, like, yeah, I would say, um, I think also being a mom, what's so interesting is like you realize, you know, everything's, everything's brought to our life. Our business is brought to us. I definitely feel like Beauty Heroes is like such a teacher for me. I feel like Charles is such a teacher for me.
- 22:38and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So I think that I'm always learning and curious and, you know, you get to learn about yourself through, through your children. And, but I feel really lucky. My kids are a lot of fun.
- 22:54and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And I have, you know, the more fun I have, the better, you know, the better it is. And I think it's just really also, you know, really connected me to my joy.
- 23:11and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: It keeps me connected to my joy. Yeah. That's amazing.
- 23:15and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Well, I read about Charles getting his first job. I'd love to hear that story. Yeah, actually, it's his second job. I'm sort of proud because he's got 2 jobs now.
- 23:27and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Oh, that's incredible. Yeah, I think, uh, you know, his first job— my first job was on the streets of Waikiki at Zorro's Pizza at the pizza place that was the rage, um, back in the day. And his first job is also at the pizza place. Oh, I love that. And so it's really close to home. It was really like a wonderful start— starter job, and he's still working there. Um, but we— this summer he wanted to challenge himself and he got a second job, and he's working at one of the busiest restaurants in San Francisco. Wow. On Pier 39. Wow. And it's like such a funny story because he got this job. They really needed somebody. So they really needed a busboy at this job. And he's, you know, just 16. So he can't serve yet because you have to be 18 to serve because you serve alcohol. And so he got this job on a Monday. He trained for 3 hours on a Thursday and his first full day was 4th of July at Pier 39. 4th of July is the busiest day of the year, but this 4th of July was the 250th anniversary of the United States.
- 24:54and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And they were closing the Golden Gate Bridge, which I think was only like the 4th time in the entire history of the bridge that they closed the bridge. to do these fireworks. And so it was truly like probably the busiest day of this century was his first day on the job. And so it makes for a really great story where he, you know, it's like his first day as a busboy in San Francisco is on the busiest day of the year at the busiest place. And it was just like, it was hysterical. I mean, I think, you know, we just kind of laughed at it and I was like, all right, you're going to have an experience.
- 25:31and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And it was. And I went, my husband And I went and picked him up at the end of the day and he was like, whoa.
- 25:39and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So it was, it was a great growth moment. I love that. Well, I want to go back to your philosophy of live lighter, love more. You know, it feels so much more than just your company motto. What does it actually mean to you in your life today? Like, how are you kind of moving that forward? I, you know, first of all, there's so many different ways you can layer live lighter, love more. I think for me personally, I just think about wanting to have fewer things that are higher quality.
- 26:15and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Mm-hmm. And that is something that you grow into. I started really thinking that way in my mid to late 30s. When you're younger, you just kind of don't you don't have that primer. And I think some people do, some younger people do. I'm really always surprised and I love when I see younger people in that, but I think naturally it comes to you later in life. And so it's really just, how can I value quality over quantity in every place of my life? And But with the business, I think we're always really, you know, I feel like if you have products that really work and that really feel good and that you love, you need fewer of them. Mm-hmm.
- 27:05and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: You're not, you know, and in terms of how we talk about product at Beauty Heroes, it's really not always about the new. It's not always about— new is fun and exciting. And I think, you know, it's just like anything.
- 27:20and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Of course, I want to enjoy new things in my life and have new experiences, but not just for the sake of new, you know, not for the sake of just being on this wheel of like, okay, I'm done with the old. It's like, okay, well, maybe just what do I value?
- 27:40and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So that's really how I think about it. It's all a balance. Like I said, I am in no way, you know, just some saint of, you know, of doing live lighter, love more the best of anybody at all. It's just a day-to-day little decisions that we make and wanting to, you know, I think a lot about Hawaii. Hawaii is a huge inspiration for me. I think a lot about what goes from us as humans into the environment.
- 28:16and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And that is— that's really a huge inspiration for me.
- 28:21and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And I think it just naturally was instilled by, by my upbringing.
- 28:25and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Yeah. Well, I mean, I think people would love to hear a little bit about your storefront and what you do at Beauty Heroes. And can you speak to that really quickly? I know. I mean, I'd love you to paint an image of like where you're at and what you guys do there. It's just such a lovely little space. Most of your listeners know we're in Northern California. You are in the East Bay, which I love, and I'm in the North Bay. So we're about an hour from each other. Here in Beauty Heroes is based in Novato, California, which is the last town before you hit Sonoma and Napa. So we're like 25 minutes from San Francisco and a half hour from Napa, California, right in the middle. And I started Beauty Heroes in 2014 and opened our store in 2019. And when I opened the store, I didn't want it to be like any other beauty store in the world.
- 29:23and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: I wanted it to have sort of a hospitality vibe to it. And so it's an experience store. When you walk in, you'll notice it's very spacious.
- 29:35and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And when you walk in, you see a lot of Innersense. First of all, Innersense has a really beautiful presence there as one of our longest, if not our longest standing line at Beauty Years. We've been partnered with you since the very, very early days since 2014.
- 29:55and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: But the idea is that there are these micro experiences throughout the store that you can discover products that really work for you. We are brand agnostic. We have over 100 brands that meet our specific Beauty Heroes ingredient standard from all over the world. And that means that they don't contain silicones or, you know, those petro-derived acrylates or synthetic fragrance and a lot of the ingredients that are harmful to people as well as the environment. And And it's organized in a way that as you go through the store, you're going to touch, feel, smell, and test different products. We have a beautiful holistic treatment room where we do facials and we have a brow bar.
- 30:50and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: We have our flight bar where we create these experiences with brands that can come in and we do beautiful events.
- 31:01and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And just our team is super educated. They're amazing. They, you know, you go— we do a lot of training here at Beauty Heroes so that our beauty and wellness educators can help you, can talk about like if you come in and you had a bad night's sleep, help you talk about like maybe a product that might support sleep. And also if you have frizzy hair, help you figure out which shampoo and conditioner, which styling products, And which lipstick to wear, you know, based on texture and what you like.
- 31:36and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: It's really about like finding your perfect match, finding your hero products. That's what Beauty Heroes was named after. And products that, you know, you can trust are going to be, you know, good for you. And that, you know, that somebody, me, has looked at this ingredient list and really cares And, and really cares all the way. I love that. And they can find you online as well. Yeah.
- 32:06and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So we ship globally. We ship every day. I— we ship here from our Northern California warehouse. So we do everything in-house, customer service, fulfillment, and our store is only 2 blocks away. And so I'm here at our corporate offices and warehouse now. And we ship, like I said, 6 days a week all over the world. Amazing.
- 32:29and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: That's so cool. Yeah. Well, Jeannie, what does the future hold for you? What's inspiring you right now? What are— what's your next steps? Yeah. So at Beauty Heroes, one of the things that we're working on, one of the things that I'm working on is actually— and I think you are the first person I'm telling, and this is a huge step for me, like really a big step. Um, and that's that, um, I'm starting a YouTube channel. Oh, amazing. I know it looks like I'm really comfortable on camera or on voice, by voice, but I'm not. It— this is taking a lot for me to step into that sort of confidence. Uh, so that is something, and trying to find, I think I have hopefully a fun, unique, and interesting way of looking at what we do and this industry.
- 33:29and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And so I'm hoping to bring that to life. So that is something that I'm really focused on here. And yeah, we are looking forward to just telling brand stories in new ways. We love doing it in person and at events.
- 33:48and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: So we have some really fun events planned this fall at the Beauty Heroes store.
- 33:52and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Fun. Well, that's exciting. Congratulations.
- 33:56and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: Well, I really appreciate you being here today. This was such a fun conversation. It just seemed like it flew by really, really fast. So we'll have to definitely get a coffee date on the books. Would be really fun. Yes, I love, I love all of your guests and the way that you talk to them about, you know, trusting themselves.
- 34:18and transparency in the beauty industry. Her motto: And this has been really an honor to be in this conversation with you today, Joanne. Thank you. Well, thank you so much, Jeanie, for sharing your wisdom, your heart, and your journey with all of us today.
