- 0:00Music.
- 0:58I am a vintage, mass-marketed children's toy from the 80s, standing right in
- 1:05front of you, holding a very sharp scalpel.
- 1:10I'm turning human again? If I don't get out of this body soon, I'm screwed.
- 1:15You little shit! Do you know what you've done?
- 1:19Hi, I'm Chucky, and I'm your friend to the end. I like a little killing now
- 1:25and then. What's wrong with that?
- 1:25Music.
- 1:43Hey everybody, welcome back to Citizen Frame, and welcome back to another Citizen Frame Retrospective.
- 1:50Today's series well this next four five
- 1:54or six podcasts are going to be chalice play
- 1:57that's right the challenge the chalice play franchise we've
- 2:01been promising it for quite some time now now we're giving it out that's it
- 2:07thank you for joining us well over the last while obviously for the podcast
- 2:12but i've always been a chucky fan but i have been re-immersing myself in chucky
- 2:17and I've started watching the TV series.
- 2:20So already I'm sort of getting Chucky fatigue a little bit, but I still enjoy
- 2:24it. But, you know, let's talk Child's Play 1 and 2.
- 2:29All right. Yeah, so as you mentioned, we're going to be doing two films in one.
- 2:34So Child's Play 1 and 2 for this podcast and 3 and 4 for the next, etc, etc.
- 2:38Like we did Nightmares in the Friday 13th.
- 2:43So we're just going to jump into it. Yep. Good old Chucky. Starting with Child's
- 2:47Play 1. I remember seeing this in the theater.
- 2:49I was fucking, I loved Child's Play when I was younger. What was I?
- 2:5516 maybe when it came out? But I remember seeing the theater,
- 2:58seeing it quite a few times.
- 3:00Yeah, that surge of all these films coming out that were so good.
- 3:03Lost Boys came out around that time.
- 3:08Hellraiser, they came out that time. Child's Play. He had Waxwork.
- 3:13All these different films were coming out at the same time,
- 3:17But yes, I remember Child's Play, as I've often discussed on this podcast,
- 3:21I didn't get to see these films because I was a kid.
- 3:24It was like 12, 13 when Child's Play came out. I didn't get to see it until
- 3:27it was released in video.
- 3:28But I remember absolutely loving it.
- 3:31And it still holds up, in my opinion.
- 3:35Well, let's see how that holds up stands up. Yeah. See how my hold up holds up.
- 3:44How your hold up stands up. Yeah. That's what I said.
- 3:48That might make my comment made more sense. Well, they both make sense technically.
- 3:51No, yours is stupid. Right, whatever.
- 3:53Yours is dumb. No one's going to believe it. Heidi-ho, want to play?
- 4:00He just ruined it. Movie's the worst movie ever right now. So Don Messini,
- 4:04who's the creator of the Chuckies, he pretty much got the idea from a,
- 4:09you know, pretty much his dad was a marketing ad exec. So he pretty much got
- 4:12the idea from consumerism.
- 4:14So I think it was in college, Berkeley or somewhere. I can't remember where
- 4:17he went, but that's where he came up with the idea for Chucky.
- 4:22And he knew it was going to be rewritten a couple times. John Lafayette did
- 4:27some rewrites. Actually, he did the most successful rewrite.
- 4:29And Tom Holland got his hands on there as well.
- 4:32Now, Tom Holland at the time was known as a screenwriter.
- 4:35He had very, I personally think, great success.
- 4:41They weren't hits at the time, but they became really cult hits,
- 4:43which was obviously the underrated, now very popular, Psycho 2. Yes.
- 4:48And the awesome, people need to see it, Class of 1984. Yeah.
- 4:53And two very good films. And then he obviously went on to direct Fright Night,
- 5:01which is considered one of the probably… Oh, it's a classic.
- 5:04A fan fan. Yeah, it's brilliant.
- 5:05A fan fan. Apparently, Mancini and Holland did not get on over Holland's changes
- 5:11to Mancini's original script and story, and Holland got Mancini banned from
- 5:16the set when they were filming it.
- 5:18Yeah, there's a reason why Holland's not back for two, and we'll dive into that.
- 5:24But Holland, I don't want him to speak. I wasn't there. Yes,
- 5:27of course, same here. But even Holland's, I watched the documentary.
- 5:31I'm a Holland fan, so no disrespect to Holland, but it seems like a lot of the
- 5:36crew weren't fans of Holland. Right.
- 5:38And the way he directs, so forth, and he was not invited back.
- 5:42David Kirshner made that quite clear in part two. Okay.
- 5:45He was not even a choice. so some,
- 5:49eggs were broken there but we always say too many egos in the kitchen well you
- 5:53know this is not a surprise to me you know not the Holland stuff but you know
- 5:58people not getting on during the movie making process you know what I mean it's
- 6:03as old as movie making itself you know these things happen including the rewrites things,
- 6:08well one of the things they changed Tom Holland changed which I agree with Tom
- 6:13Tom we're good friends too Of course.
- 6:15Like you and Eager as well, you used to be, but does it have fallen out now? Yeah.
- 6:20As I like to call it, Nasferat. Nasferat, no.
- 6:25Get it? Yes. Nasferat, too. Nasferat, no. Yeah, that was even worse than my
- 6:29joke earlier. Nasferat, no.
- 6:31I should change that. I'm going to change the title. All right.
- 6:34All right. I'm sorry, we're talking good film. So the original concept was that
- 6:41the doll was going to become Andy's alter ego.
- 6:44It's going to become his lashing out at the people he's been bullied and so forth.
- 6:49And then the doll would protect him, which is kind of the way they go with in
- 6:55the new version. The reboot.
- 6:57No, the reboot. And the series, yeah. Because, again, keep in mind the reboot.
- 7:02Well, we'll dive into that one. it was actually
- 7:06originally called batteries not included but at
- 7:09the time spielberg had a film coming out called but
- 7:12yeah batteries not included so they decided
- 7:15not to go that way and they had the working title was
- 7:18bloody buddy thank god that was
- 7:21not the title that's terrible yeah there's obviously influences here from i
- 7:26mean the sort of you know possessed doll sort of thing in horror films is a
- 7:31trope that has been around for a long long time you know I mean there's obviously
- 7:35inspirations here from the Twilight Zone episode you know about the talking doll with Tilly Savalas.
- 7:40Talking Tina and then you go back even
- 7:42to the 1940s Dead of Night you know with Michael Redgrave and the ventriloquist's
- 7:47stomach you can list a bunch yeah Tales from the Crypt had one with Joan Collins
- 7:53I think was being attacked by a voodoo thing that was the other one Michelle
- 7:57Black Trilogy of Terror Michelle Black. Yeah.
- 8:02Yes, that's right. And then you had Magic. Yeah. They have V.
- 8:05Hopkins, the ventriloquist.
- 8:08So, yeah, it's not, you know.
- 8:11But I think this was the first time they peppered in a hint of comedy.
- 8:18So it's more of a comedy horror, the first Child's Play. Yeah.
- 8:21Although it's funny because with Child's Play, we talked about this with,
- 8:26where at least the 513s had a good steady 4-5,
- 8:31films and then it kind of went batshit crazy and then
- 8:35you had the nightmares in particular the nightmare in elm
- 8:37streets you you can't the problem
- 8:41i have nightmares was it went from a very
- 8:44dark pedophile serial killer of children to this
- 8:47camp lovable one-liner jokester from
- 8:51the second one on but child's play
- 8:54even though this one's a little darker than what we're about
- 8:57to jump into and rest of the series could can
- 9:00make that transition it could get
- 9:03away with that transition if that no no totally because essentially the story
- 9:07here while in this first film it is handled very seriously or more seriously
- 9:12than the others and a very much the serious tone very much works ultimately
- 9:17it's a completely preposterous story of a doll coming to life you know a serial killer,
- 9:23putting his soul into this doll, this inanimate object.
- 9:27But the fact that it's a bit of a stroke of genius, actually,
- 9:31how well they pulled this off.
- 9:34Yeah, and Kevin Yeager and the FX team nailed it out of the park. They do an amazing job.
- 9:43And then Kevin Yeager would meet his wife. That's right, Catherine Hicks. Catherine, yeah.
- 9:48So the movie cost $9 million to make. It made $44 million, so kudos.
- 9:53Let's dive into Charles Lee Ray. Yeah.
- 9:57As we know, Charles Lee Ray, the name came from three infamous madmen,
- 10:04Charles Manson from the Manson Murders, Lee Harvey Oswald from the JFK assassination,
- 10:09and James Earl Ray, who assassinated Dr.
- 10:13Martin Luther King. I always thought, as well, there was a sort of play on Henry Lee Lucas's name,
- 10:19you know, the serial killer, the American serial killer, But I may be wrong,
- 10:23No it's what you said No I've read up on that
- 10:25what you're saying as well But in my head For many
- 10:29years I always thought It was a play on Henry Lee Lucas I would say as well
- 10:34before the days of You know the internet Everybody having the internet on their
- 10:37phone And IMDB for many years I thought the actress playing the mother Catherine
- 10:43Hicks was the very same Actress who played Tina In Nightmare on Elm Street Because she does look like her.
- 10:50She looks nothing like her. She does. She really does.
- 10:55She looks... Your comparisons to people...
- 11:00You've got to be legally blind. No, no, no, no. There is a similarity there.
- 11:04There's not. You sit there and you try to like... No, no. Anybody listening
- 11:08to this podcast would just want to beat you with a stick right now.
- 11:12That's because you all know that it's not her because of the IMDB and the internet.
- 11:16But back when I was a kid... No, I knew it right away. I knew right away everyone
- 11:20knows her from Star Trek 4 She is actually in Star Trek 4 Yeah, the Voyage Home Yeah,
- 11:26that's where we all kind of got introduced to her In my 12 year old,
- 11:3013 year old mind I thought that this was Amanda Bice,
- 11:36who'd just grown up a bit and was now in Child's Play but I've done similar
- 11:40stuff like that over the years especially before the days of the internet,
- 11:44You're just a closed No, not at all she does look like her with the hairstyle
- 11:49and stuff with the blonde hair she does no I'm going to stick by I'm going to
- 11:52stick by 12 year old me sorry.
- 11:56Wow wow go ahead we're talking I just let's move on I'm sorry yeah please fill
- 12:06up with Jesus Christ let's move on,
- 12:08so we got Catherine Hicks Chris Sarandon Alex Vincent Brad Dorff and Dina Minoff,
- 12:13very limited cast awesome I love it you've got Chris Rannon,
- 12:17who's hot from Tom Holland's Fight Night.
- 12:19Very nice to see him. Very sad he didn't return for a second.
- 12:23Alex Vincent, a kid actor. Not bad. You know, he's leading this,
- 12:27so you've got to give him credit.
- 12:29I think for whatever age he was, six or seven at the time, he does a very solid job.
- 12:34He does alright. He's a little whiny.
- 12:38There's some times where I was rooting for Chuckie. Well, there's one line in
- 12:41particular near the end where he goes, this is the and friend.
- 12:46You know where he's trying to sell gravitas?
- 12:48But you know what I mean? Yeah, but I mean he's a six year old kid so we let him away a bit.
- 12:55So I like the beginning. It's a chase sequence. Detective Mike,
- 13:00Mike Norris, Chris, is going after Charles Lee Ray.
- 13:04He's pretty much a serial killer at this point.
- 13:06And it's kind of funny. I've just noticed this and again through the podcast
- 13:10eyes, even when Chuckie's to come to come, that are yet to come, you...
- 13:19Charles, he raised a whiny little bastard and you see it right when Eddie,
- 13:24the getaway van leaves him as he's being chased. Yes.
- 13:27And as he gets shot, he's got this whiny tone to him and he tears up a bit.
- 13:36And it does show in the other one how childlike his character kind of can be,
- 13:44even though he's this brutal killer.
- 13:46Well, Brad Dourif, you know, he does that sort of serial killer.
- 13:52Psycho sort of role very well, and he's done it multiple times.
- 13:55And more seriously, in Exorcist 3, you know, he's a Gemini killer.
- 14:00He had a similar role in an episode of The X-Files. So he does that sort of,
- 14:04you know, psycho serial killer very well.
- 14:07But yes, he is a bit sort of whiny and sort of, I know what you mean.
- 14:11Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the whole point is what works with Dourif is he plays emotion well.
- 14:17What I mean by that, you got a whiny character who's about to be caught by the
- 14:21police, makes him kind of human, I guess you can say, for that brief moment.
- 14:25The scene where he's being set on fire and you get to near the end,
- 14:28you can hear him. You can hear his pain.
- 14:31He sells it. It's just his voice. You know, it's not, you know,
- 14:35it's a doll being set on fire, but he sells the doll being on fire because of
- 14:40the way, you know, he sells it. He just does. The way he plays it.
- 14:45And it's amazing just for such a small little role. He signed off for a three-picture
- 14:49deal because I think they thought they had a hit on their hands, which they clearly do.
- 14:53But it's amazing. Brad Dorff, one of the finest performances of all time and
- 14:57one of the most soul-destroying performances of all time is the movie called
- 15:00One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Oh, absolutely. Believe in it.
- 15:03And his character, Nerds Cratchit, two of the most polar opposite characters in the same film.
- 15:10And it is a soul-destroying performance. If you guys horror fans out there who
- 15:14like Brad Dorff, you need to check out his original work.
- 15:18And then my favorite performance, my favorite performance by Brad Dorff will
- 15:22always be the Gemini killer in Legion of Exorcist 3.
- 15:26100%. And it's just his voice. Even in Chuck, he's got the ham up.
- 15:32He hams up the voice a bit. But in that Legion, he can deepen his voice a bit
- 15:36that it's almost, ironically enough, demonic.
- 15:41Well, the great thing to prove how great of an actor Brad Dorff is,
- 15:44here he's essentially playing the same type of role but with a subtle tweak
- 15:50to his performances in that Chucky is tongue in cheek to his performance as
- 15:55a little tongue in cheek but then with Exorcist 3 you know what I mean he's full on sinister,
- 16:01unbelievable yeah.
- 16:05But we move on yeah he's taking the bullet and now he knows he's pretty much
- 16:09done for so he's got to transfer his soul to whatever's available obviously it's Chucky though,
- 16:16and he promised to get revenge on the people that fucked him like Mike and Eddie and so on.
- 16:21I love the mumbo jumbo that he says whenever he's doing the spell,
- 16:24you know, give me the power I beg of thee it's just pretty campy a little he-man there,
- 16:31yeah, yeah, but even you know the sort of basically the made up mumbo jumbo
- 16:36words, I think they're made up anyway I was waiting for them to quote what do
- 16:40you call it, the Necrocomicon,
- 16:42yes, yes, well yeah He kept screwing up the words.
- 16:46Yes. Yes. Yeah. Klaatu barata necktie. Necktie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:54I do like when we introduced Andy. And Catherine Hicks is, I think,
- 16:58very good in this film. Brilliant here.
- 17:00Properly, he is playing this dead straight, and she is really convincing here.
- 17:04Yeah, and so is Chris Sarandon.
- 17:06Yes. And then you got Brad Dorff. So you've got these wonderful actors who are
- 17:11really selling their roles.
- 17:13And Catherine Hicks, you feel so sorry for her. She's just a working-class single
- 17:16mom, and she's trying to get her to kid's birthday stuff, and he ends up getting
- 17:21clothes. I mean, who the fuck wants clothes?
- 17:24And they're like, fuck off, I don't
- 17:25want fucking clothes. But she's being practical, you know what I mean?
- 17:28And like you say, she's a struggling young mother, single mother,
- 17:31because she's lost her husband.
- 17:33Apparently the backstory that isn't revealed but was cut is the father died in a car crash.
- 17:39But then apparently one draft of the script was going to reveal that Charles
- 17:44Lee Ray was actually the father of Andy.
- 17:47I'm glad they didn't go down that route. No, that would have been creepy.
- 17:51Yeah. I like the fact that... See, they should have gave her a more little,
- 17:54I mean, the movie's not that long. They could have given her a little backstory.
- 17:58That would have been all right. Like, even a conversation with Mike the cop,
- 18:01she could have said, listen, we don't have to deal with this.
- 18:03We already had to deal with tragedy once, and that could have been mentioned.
- 18:07And it even makes you for more. You know what I mean?
- 18:11Yes. They never get why they cut little stuff like that out.
- 18:14I would say, though, that, yeah, she, see the whole sort of,
- 18:17especially in the early scenes,
- 18:19she is very believable as this struggling young single mother yeah yeah of course.
- 18:27And he's very good in it you kind of feel sorry for him when he gets clothes.
- 18:31Yeah he is good yeah I'll be like fuck this shit I know a good guy toolbox who
- 18:38am I supposed to do with this shit,
- 18:41yeah and that's the way kids react to stuff like that you know what I mean you
- 18:45don't want stupid clothes when you're a kid you want the latest toy in this case a good guy doll.
- 18:51Yeah, there's a scene where something's bothering me where the boss threatens
- 18:54her. You got to work late. No, you don't. By law, she doesn't have to work late.
- 18:59He threatens to fire her and everything. Well, it's my kid's birthday.
- 19:02I'm off the clock. I don't have to work for you.
- 19:05Yeah. And she pretty much threatens her, and this is where we get Maggie's death
- 19:09because she's going to babysit.
- 19:10Well, Maggie- It's like, I'll tell you what, though. That guy bothers me because
- 19:15by law, he couldn't get away with that.
- 19:17Well, I mean, yeah. I mean, you're sort of in a pecking, but I ain't in a pecking.
- 19:20So it didn't bother me that much I do have to
- 19:23sort of set it up but I was more distracted by
- 19:26the fact that the mate Maggie she is
- 19:30basically the go to stereotypical 80s
- 19:33best friend to the female lead you know what I mean I was thinking of you know
- 19:37Sarah Connor's mate in the original Terminator all these types of 80s films
- 19:41always seem to have that had a female lead their best friend was always a bit
- 19:47quirky and you know a bit opinionated and inevitably end up getting bumped off, you know.
- 19:53But, you know, she works. She's decent in the role as well.
- 19:58Yeah, she works. And then when she does get it, I do love her death.
- 20:02It's cool. She's shut out the window and then you see the body slam in the car.
- 20:05The two best scenes for me are her death scene and also the scene shortly after
- 20:11where basically Andy's mum threatens Chucky.
- 20:16This is when Chucky properly comes to life for the first time.
- 20:19You go, you fucking stupid bitch.
- 20:21You know, that sort of thing. They're my two favorite scenes, actually, of the film.
- 20:25Well, mine's the, the burning.
- 20:28Right. So, so you got these little good guy shoes, then they're in the,
- 20:34what do they call it, the fucking flower. Yes.
- 20:38Right now, right away, Detective Mike there, he thinks, you know,
- 20:42who else is going to be here? The kid's shoes.
- 20:45Yeah. You know, so he checks his kid's shoes and.
- 20:49And I like the fact they bring back Alex Vincent, the actual actor in future series.
- 20:54Yes, absolutely. Because, you know, I was always curious what he looks like.
- 20:58I like when they do that. They don't do it much anymore.
- 21:01Like Miko Hughes. I've never seen him much anymore.
- 21:04But he wasn't really in a franchise like Chalice Play.
- 21:08No, like Pet Sematary and Kindergarten Cop. You know? Yeah.
- 21:13Alex Vincent, he's done well. You know what I mean? He does the conventions a lot as well.
- 21:17And I think he's a big fan favorite, you know, at the conventions and stuff,
- 21:19and he's always stayed loyal to the series.
- 21:22Maybe he hasn't been offered quite as many roles since, but good on him.
- 21:27You know what I mean? He's still stayed loyal to it and to the fans.
- 21:30Yeah, I know. He's doing it for himself.
- 21:33And so after her friend gets chucked out a window, the next day she brings the kid to school.
- 21:40You really don't think you can have a day off after that?
- 21:43After witnessing a murder? Yeah. Do you think maybe give him a day off? Would that be cool?
- 21:49Yeah, but to be fair, Chucky had to get him to school so that Chucky could go
- 21:53and get his getaway driver. This is my favorite part.
- 21:57The mom drops him off, hugs and kisses. He then sneaks out right away,
- 22:02takes the L train in Chicago through the worst part of Chicago you can go to
- 22:07while carrying a doll bigger than him.
- 22:10And I do love when you finally get a POV shot at Chucky because he's telling
- 22:15him to bring him to Eddie's house.
- 22:16Really good shot, actually. I do like the POV of Chucky. It's this little short camera. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:23It's running across the street. See, up until Chucky's actually revealed as
- 22:27being properly alive, there's some great tension played with,
- 22:31you know, the glimpses of Chucky running in the background and stuff,
- 22:33in the apartment and stuff.
- 22:35It's really well set up. Well, I think they're just like...
- 22:39We knew it wasn't Andy, but the reason I don't think they really showed you
- 22:43anything was because they wanted a hint that maybe we're fooling you.
- 22:47Maybe Andy is the one doing it.
- 22:49Yeah, well, exactly. Nobody knew at the time that this was a franchise and Chucky
- 22:53was going to be a runaway star.
- 22:55This was a one-off. Well, I know there was a three-pitcher deal,
- 22:58but essentially, for all intents and purposes, actually, I didn't know there
- 23:03was a three-pitcher deal until you said earlier, but for all intents and purposes,
- 23:06this is a one-off horror film.
- 23:09Well, I think with Brad Dorff, they always give the lead a three-picture deal,
- 23:14especially in the mid-'80s where all these horror films have sequels flying out.
- 23:19So they had to make sure they had him locked.
- 23:23So I don't think it was anything like you'd get now, you know what I mean, financially.
- 23:28But yeah, I do like he's his buddy.
- 23:33Eddie is walking around the house. He's hearing something. And he had a little pitter-patter of feet.
- 23:37And then you see this little hand. this is when he knows on Andy his little
- 23:40hand doll hand turning on the gas.
- 23:44Nice explosion really yeah and really good effective I mean all of the deaths in here are all pretty,
- 23:52effective in fact I know I said the one you know throwing the babysitter out
- 23:55the window was my favourite scene along with the mother you know finding out
- 23:59about Chucky but another one of my favourite scenes is where Chucky goes to visit Dr.
- 24:04Death yeah the voodoo the voodoo guy yeah that's my point I mean,
- 24:08all the tests are decent. They're all different too.
- 24:10Yes. They don't kind of, you know, here it comes with the knife.
- 24:13And there's a point to them? So there is, you want to make it?
- 24:17So after the explosion, the detective has him in custody.
- 24:23And this is a good scene. There's a nice scene where the kid is sitting in a
- 24:29little, not really an interrogation room, just a regular room,
- 24:32and the cops trying to get- Sort of is, though.
- 24:34And some of the cops trying to get information out of him.
- 24:37And he insists that it was the doll who did it, Chucky. And there's a shot where
- 24:42Mike, again, Chris Ren, and this goes to the acting, is looking up at the ceiling
- 24:48like, I don't want to hear this because this poor kid is delusional. Yeah.
- 24:51And he feels right there, he feels sorry for him.
- 24:54And you can see that the way he sells it because Mike also mentions it again
- 24:58to her, to the mom going, listen, I was in that room. I didn't like what I was hearing.
- 25:03Yes. So he has her back, but at the same time his hands are tied.
- 25:08What the fuck is he supposed to do? And that's a great little character arc for him.
- 25:12Yeah. also as well I would say as well special shout out to his cynical partner
- 25:17you know the guy with the 80's moustache oh you mean Nasratu yeah.
- 25:24And he's very much like what the fuck you know talking dolls you know give me
- 25:29a break you know I was totally on his side and Chris Sarandon's actually you
- 25:34know because in reality if someone if some screaming mother or some kid came
- 25:38to you and said well actually it wasn't us that did the murders. It was the kid's doll.
- 25:43And he, like you say, he sells it. You know, this sort of, oh,
- 25:47here we go again, not this shit type attitude, you know? Yeah.
- 25:52So, when the mother, he's got to stay overnight, the kid. Yes.
- 25:58In the really creepy kid's asylum. Yeah, I mean, I know this was the 80s,
- 26:03but it feels more like the Victorian asylum or something, you know?
- 26:07For kids. It's pretty harsh. One who flew to cuckoo's nest for kids.
- 26:10Yeah, And also the guy from the Incredible Hulk TV series. He's the doctor,
- 26:15the guy with the glasses.
- 26:17Who would he play in the Hulk? He was like, I think he was like David Banner's
- 26:22mate. He's in all the episodes.
- 26:23I mean, I haven't seen it in many years. I don't remember the Hulk.
- 26:27But again, your pointless lookalikes and your pointless people extra number two. Thank you for that.
- 26:35Don't mention it. So the best part, one of my favorite parts is when she's home by herself.
- 26:41And the Chucky doll won't shut up. And she's like, shut the fuck up, you little bastard.
- 26:46And she's going to chuck out the box and the batteries come out of the box. It's a good scene.
- 26:52And she walks over to the Chucky doll very slowly.
- 26:56And opens up the back and there's no batteries in it. That is such a good reveal. It's so fun. Yep.
- 27:02And also, a short, you know, following this, she then, she has enough and she
- 27:07threatens to, this is the one I was referring to earlier, where she threatens to burn the doll.
- 27:11Speak, you little shit, you little bastard. Yeah.
- 27:14She goes, you filthy slut, I don't teach you to fuck with me.
- 27:17Yeah, and that's whenever Chuckie like properly, fully reveals,
- 27:22you know what I mean? You stupid fucking bitch.
- 27:25With the wee sort of angry face and stuff. It's in equal parts really funny,
- 27:30but also pretty creepy and terrifying as well. Yeah. Really well done.
- 27:34This is where the film, and I'm shocked if anyone protests Chucky,
- 27:38because come on. I mean. Yeah, exactly.
- 27:41I can see it was an actual child, you know, set out parts and,
- 27:46you know, but it's not, it's a fucking doll.
- 27:49How do you get offended by something like this? Anyone could
- 27:52take any of the Chucky film series is beyond me but we will
- 27:54get to the big controversies whenever we're doing child's play
- 27:57three the big controversies here in the uk with child's play
- 28:00three but we'll get to those but yes i agree
- 28:03how anyone could yes it's foul moved but
- 28:06it's completely over the top and how anyone could in any way take chucky or
- 28:11the film series overall seriously is you know they obviously haven't watched
- 28:16it for a start no no they did they just heard about it yeah exactly so i another
- 28:22good scene is the car fight scene between Mike and Chucky.
- 28:27And he's got him by the neck, obviously, with a seatbelt, whatever he's got going around his neck.
- 28:31And he uses the cigarette burn, and he burns his face.
- 28:36And this is when Chucky starts to realize, shit, why did I feel that?
- 28:41Because at this point, he didn't realize he can't feel pain.
- 28:44He thought he was invincible, technically, at this point.
- 28:48But he's now finding out when he goes to Dr. Death, when he finds out that,
- 28:52no, you have to transfer quickly or you'll be stuck in that body and it becomes human.
- 28:57Yes, exactly. And that's why he's starting to feel pain and that's why he gets the gunshot.
- 29:01Now, this whole chase scene is so well done. And then you've got the knife going underneath the seat.
- 29:06And you're like, geez, any guy can feel that.
- 29:09Oh, totally. He starts speeding up the car on him. The car obviously crashes.
- 29:14And this is where Chucky still feels he's kind of invincible. and
- 29:17then there's a great slow-mo shot where he suits where Mike
- 29:21shoots him and he flies back and he
- 29:24runs and now he panics because he doesn't realize oh
- 29:27shit why am I feeling pain yeah exactly and I love those claustrophobic scenes
- 29:32where he's in the car Mike's in the car but it's basically turned upside down
- 29:36he's got a seatbelt and stuff on he's kind of struggling to get out but yet
- 29:39Chucky's running around the car and stuff again brilliantly effectively directed and that's not.
- 29:47Forget about the animatronics are incredible.
- 29:51Oh great, yeah. And even the little people, the dwarfs, or I don't want to call
- 29:55them now, little people that they put in the costume work well.
- 30:00Apparently, do you know who played Chucky in some of the scenes? Who?
- 30:05Andy Barclay's younger sister in real life. Oh really? Yeah, yeah. There you go.
- 30:11They used a mix of basically puppeteering, animatronics, and also little people
- 30:20and actual children. Yeah.
- 30:25I remember the famous story in Halloween, the original, where Michael Myers
- 30:31got the mask on, and we see the point of view of Michael Myers,
- 30:34he's going to grab the knife. Yeah.
- 30:36That knife was actually Deborah Hill's hand.
- 30:39The producer. Right, because obviously the child actor. Deborah Hill was 20-something,
- 30:44but she was very So it looks like she had a little kid's hand.
- 30:48So they used her hand to do that.
- 30:50But it's very clever how they can do that kind of stuff and how they adapt to
- 30:53it and how they can, what do we, you know, and a lot of it's on the cuff.
- 30:57They got to, what do we do when you got to film the shot?
- 30:59They'll go, Hey, you over here, you got a small hand. Come over here. You know, that's.
- 31:03Exactly. Yeah. A hundred percent. And it works. We'll certainly hear it those
- 31:06anyway. You know? Exactly.
- 31:09The voodoo guy, he gets it. Poor bastard. I love him. He's great. Poor bastard. Yeah.
- 31:16You are an abomination.
- 31:19Yeah. He gets his legs all broken as well with the voodoo doll. Yeah.
- 31:25That was good. And the voodoo guy, the voodoo guy is quite good at it because
- 31:30he sells it quite, quite well because he knows he's dead.
- 31:34And especially when he has the voodoo doll in his hand, it's a nice little.
- 31:37Yeah. Your own dojo. Chuckie says. Yeah.
- 31:42Yeah. Yeah, it's ironic death he gets, I guess. So-
- 31:47There's a shot where you see little Chucky running up the stairs to the kids'
- 31:53asylum because he finds out that he needs Alex's body because he's the first
- 31:58one he opened up to about who he really is.
- 32:01So that's the only person he can transfer his soul to.
- 32:05And this is the famous shot where Tom Holland kept yelling at him,
- 32:08I need you to cry, kid. His parents were on the set at the time.
- 32:12And he whispers something in his ear, something horrible about your parents
- 32:15are dead or something like that. And he admits to doing this.
- 32:18And he did a William freaking on a child and
- 32:22the kid started crying and that shot you see
- 32:25him crying screaming for help and nobody
- 32:28was coming to help him because Chucky's coming to get him no one believes him and
- 32:31he starts crying and Tom Holland actually went up to the parents and said I'm
- 32:37sorry about that but I hadn't and she was no it's for his craft like Jesus it
- 32:41totally works because you feel so sorry for this kid in this scene because the tears are real.
- 32:51You know, you see movies like Smile. We talk about Smile 2, Prey Smile 2,
- 32:56or even the original Smile where
- 32:58both people are put in a situation where nobody's going to believe them.
- 33:02You've got the ex-druggy and then you've got the therapist, mental therapist,
- 33:08who seems like she's having a breakdown.
- 33:10No one's going to believe either of these people and their situation.
- 33:13And Andy's actually the exact same thing. and now so's the mother.
- 33:17And quite frankly, so's the mother. It's even worse for Andy because nobody
- 33:21believes kids anyway. And he's telling the truth here.
- 33:26So the final showdown is the best part of the film.
- 33:31It closes well. It's paced well. It's got some good banter as you mentioned with the partner.
- 33:39It's just I love the fact when she throws him behind in the fire and she's going
- 33:48to set it on fire and she's got to be on the cage,
- 33:52and obviously Andy lights the match and sets him on fire and that whole effect, whether it obviously,
- 33:59it's probably more mechanical but there's probably a stunt double and some camera
- 34:04technique they'd used but again,
- 34:06Brad Dorff selling it, the pain that he is going through and even if you think
- 34:10about it it's melted plastic Well, human flesh as well, because he's turned into human as well.
- 34:16So it's a mixture of plastic and human flesh.
- 34:19But even before they actually light the match, you know, you can see him like,
- 34:23you know, desperate, like trying to escape and stuff. It works really well.
- 34:27Yeah. And each time you see him, he's weaker because he's got the bullet wound
- 34:31now. His face is starting. He's taking hits.
- 34:34Whether it's with baseball bats and so forth. So he's not this invincible being
- 34:38in his mind that he thought he was. He's more vulnerable.
- 34:42But the voodoo guy, before he dies, tells him you have to shoot him in the heart. His last breath.
- 34:50So after they chop off his head, his arm, his leg, he's still coming after him.
- 34:55And that's where the partner gets grabbed by the throat.
- 34:59And when Mike shoots him, it's the best.
- 35:02It's a great shot because when he shoots him in the heart, you can see the blood
- 35:06and the heart piece and the muscle fly back in the back of the wall.
- 35:11And that shows that he's human.
- 35:14You saw a little blood here and there but until you saw him shoot the heart
- 35:17that's where you know this thing was human. It's a really nice touch. Yeah.
- 35:22And it's an important detail actually. Plus continuity again.
- 35:25Alright. Yeah, so that's the end of Child's Play. Child's Play was a big hit.
- 35:30Of course we know it's a horror standard. They come up with a sequel.
- 35:35Tom Holland was not invited back. Some kind of feud there as we previously just discussed.
- 35:40This time, the writers are taking over. John Lafayette who kind of fine-tuned
- 35:45the script is now director and Tom Machini is full story band.
- 35:50And they wanted Andy by, they decided they wanted Andy by himself.
- 35:55Now, they interviewed during a documentary Catherine Hicks and she was not happy.
- 36:00She didn't mind not coming back, but she did not like the fact that she was
- 36:04thrown into a mental institution,
- 36:06because she, see the whole film is that
- 36:09she's trying to prove her sanity and prove her kid's sanity and they
- 36:12did prove that so they made
- 36:15like a one nine fix and that wasn't fair to their character and i got her point
- 36:19100 although i would say at the end of child's play one whenever mike's partner
- 36:26eventually realizes that the doll is alive you know mike says to him now do
- 36:31you believe me he turns around and goes, yeah, but who's going to believe me?
- 36:35So I can accept that because, let's face it, in real life if somebody fucking,
- 36:41a grown adult claimed that a doll was responsible for a series of murders.
- 36:45You keep saying that as an excuse, but that's still not keeping true to what
- 36:50the first one was trying to do.
- 36:52You're, you got these, I mean you've got three credible witnesses,
- 36:57two of them are cops and you're doing the first film of Disjustice and the funny
- 37:01thing us as the same writers.
- 37:03So what you're doing here is you're pretty much wiping out everything that Catherine
- 37:07Hicks, Chris Sarandon did.
- 37:10And with these bad one-line fixes, they could have said something different.
- 37:15It didn't make any sense why you just institutionalized it like that.
- 37:19And I don't think that's fair.
- 37:21I really don't. And Catherine Hicks is completely, completely right.
- 37:24We just went, we just discussed a second ago, well, about how her performance
- 37:28and she's got to sell that she's not crazy and blah, blah, blah.
- 37:32And now you just, at the end, that's thrown out by just throwing it under an institution.
- 37:37Well, in terms of the character, I can understand that happening to the character.
- 37:42But I would say that I would have liked Catherine Hicks to come back because
- 37:47she's basically so good in the first one.
- 37:49And she deserved to come back.
- 37:51I've read up on stuff where it says that essentially the writers just wanted
- 37:55to go in a different direction. But just, aren't they? I don't know.
- 37:58Obviously, I wasn't there.
- 38:00And I don't know exactly what went on. but yes I would very much have liked
- 38:03to have seen Catherine Hex back because she's very very good in the first one
- 38:08she was on the set because she married Kevin Yeager yes because her husband,
- 38:12she was pregnant at the time of the making of the second one so this one we
- 38:16got Andy back Alex Vincent we got Jenny Agotter plays Joanne we got Garrett
- 38:21Graham who plays Phil Simpson we got Christine Elise as Kylie Brad Dorff of
- 38:25course is back and of course we got Mrs.
- 38:27Kettlewell which is a wonderful character and I always like to see we've talked
- 38:31to her a few times, Grace Briskey as Grace Poole.
- 38:35Yes, Laura Palmer's mother from Twin Peaks. Sure, we go that one if you'd like.
- 38:40Jenny O'Gutter, who we just talked about recently with Darkman,
- 38:44she's famous for, obviously, American Wealth of London.
- 38:47She said this was the worst film she's ever been on.
- 38:50And she says it was the worst experience she's ever been on.
- 38:53And she said, and I can see this, this movie is 87 minutes long and like 30
- 38:59minutes of it's in a factory.
- 39:00They said they cut so many scenes that she was really proud of and I never get
- 39:05that with horror films why cut some decent scenes to give the actors a little
- 39:08you know a little meat on the bone why just you know even her death is off screen
- 39:14so I understand why she'd be a little upset exactly.
- 39:18Yeah, and I would say as well, you know, what we do get here with her,
- 39:22overall, she is sadly wasted because she can act.
- 39:27And you know what I mean? She has what it takes. And she's just a little bit
- 39:33more than a supporting character here, which is sad to see.
- 39:36I would have liked to have seen so much more of her in this, essentially.
- 39:42And, you know, yeah, I sort of agree with her. I think she's right.
- 39:46I think she has been badly missed here.
- 39:49I got her back on that one. Her and Catherine Hex are both completely right. I remember Chris ran in.
- 39:53Yes. He goes, they did have a scene with me.
- 39:57They were going to have a scene with me, but then they decided not to do it.
- 40:00And I was like, I'm cool. I got to survive a horror film. I'm all right.
- 40:03And so he was all right with it. I would have liked to have seen him back as well. Yeah.
- 40:08It would have been nice to have a cameo at the very end to help them.
- 40:11Yes. Or something. Yeah. Like have a mysterious stranger following them.
- 40:15He was the mysterious stranger or something or even like they did with Maniac
- 40:20Cop and Maniac Cop 2 why are you comparing these two well it's the same era.
- 40:26One's a piece of shit and these are pretty good and Maniac Cop,
- 40:31Bruce Campbell is the star and then they bring him back for the second one to
- 40:34kill him off in the first scene so at least he came back for the sequel that
- 40:38will be being bumped off pretty quick spoiler alert.
- 40:43We'll get to those. I do like the opening sequence. Pretty much it's a data dump.
- 40:46But I do like the fact that I don't know why the Chucky doll isn't in the evidence
- 40:50room, but it's not. Oh, that's explained?
- 40:54Yeah. That's a kind of. The cops don't want anything to do with it.
- 40:58So the big toy manufacturer gets the doll back. That's how they explain it. Give me a break.
- 41:03It's a data dump. Yes. But I do like how they show they clean it up.
- 41:07It's scraping the burnt rubber. and he just got the shell, the metal shell there.
- 41:13And I think it's kind of neat how they saw the making of the doll.
- 41:16I do think that's kind of cool. Yeah.
- 41:18And to have to bring Chucky back, so there's always going to be some sort of
- 41:22convoluted bullshit reason.
- 41:24So it sort of works in terms of convoluted bullshit reasons to bring the killer back from the dead.
- 41:30Yeah, the two executives are like, yeah, the tabloids are hurting our business
- 41:33and the police don't believe the mom. I think she's in a psych ward somewhere.
- 41:37And the police just gave us the doll. So let's just rebuild it.
- 41:42Why? Why not just throw it away?
- 41:44Yeah, exactly. Yeah, so they rebuild the doll. Why? I don't get why they're rebuilding it.
- 41:49Because I have to bring Chucky back or else the film would only be five minutes.
- 41:53Oh my God. Again, it's a bullshit excuse. And they're all pretty obnoxious and unlikable as well.
- 41:58It's like when his assistant, you know who Chucky sort of kidnaps very soon,
- 42:02I'm saying, yeah, mom, what do you want me to do with the doll?
- 42:04And your man goes, stick it up your ass. That's right, because they're putting
- 42:08the eye thing in. And you know those things are coming back.
- 42:13They're putting the eyes in, and the electrical surge brings back Chucky.
- 42:18Give me a fucking bite. Heart convenient. That's stupid.
- 42:21But I'm going with it. Yeah. I'll tell you what. This is a dumbed-down version of what we just watched.
- 42:27That's exactly what this is. But I don't care. I'm going with it. I don't care. Yeah.
- 42:31Well I mean yeah well I mean we'll get to it in our overall wrap up but yeah
- 42:37I do have other issues with it but I would agree that it is very much it's like child's play,
- 42:43child's play the film light you know it's just for me it's just a lot of could
- 42:49be down to the editing as well in fact going by what Jania Gutter said I think
- 42:52a lot of it is to do with the editing just plays off as just a bunch of set pieces and scenes,
- 42:58the finale is quite good actually and actually that opening that we've just talk about?
- 43:02Yeah, the finale's not bad, but it gets a little long. We'll talk about it.
- 43:06But so we meet the Simpsons and Kylie and... Don't!
- 43:11Yep. I do love... Andy, this is your room and he's got all these fucking brand
- 43:15new toys and shit. I'm like, cool.
- 43:17Then you open up the closet and this big good guy doll falls on him.
- 43:21You know what that reminded me of? I just remember Ricky, Billy,
- 43:24whoever's fucking name is from Santa. Silent Night. I was just about to say the same thing.
- 43:29Punished. I was just about to say the exact same thing.
- 43:33That's what it reminded me of with Billy in Silent Night, Deadly Night,
- 43:36where he's had all this traumatic shit going on with Santa basically murdering his mother.
- 43:42And they came in to get him a job as a department store Santa.
- 43:46This is what this reminded me of.
- 43:48They banned, or basically, I don't know if they bought it for Andy,
- 43:51but they basically did it all there. No, no, she said, I forgot that was there.
- 43:54Yeah, but it isn't Chucky, it's Tommy. It's Tommy, that's right.
- 43:58So when Chucky takes the plastic head over one of the executives,
- 44:03he finds out where Andy went because the executive has all the paperwork.
- 44:09Yeah, how convenient. All the police reports and everything.
- 44:14Yes, exactly. Then Chucky, not only that, Chucky then uses his very 80s sort
- 44:19of car phone to ring basically the foster headquarters,
- 44:25with Laura Palmer's mother from Twin Peaks, and I mean he just said yeah this
- 44:30is Andy's Uncle Charles yeah,
- 44:33Is there no security to go through? Especially a kid that's went through so
- 44:37much traumatic shit that Andy Partey's went through.
- 44:41Why aren't you with Andy then if you're his uncle? Why do I have custody of him?
- 44:46This could be anyone. You know what I mean? This is a child who was stalked by a killer.
- 44:51I have to admit, the one thing the film has for it, despite its massive plot
- 44:57holes and plot conveniences, this is fucking fast-paced. It doesn't stop.
- 45:03Yeah, well, I mean, like you said, it's only like 87 minutes or whatever,
- 45:07and yeah, it does go back pretty quick.
- 45:11So it does. I would say, you know, it does, you know, especially with the scenes
- 45:16coming up here with the teacher and stuff, there is a lack of tension and urgency. Yeah.
- 45:21It is very predictable. The deaths are predictable, and they seem just shoot
- 45:26in, shoehorn in, as they say.
- 45:28Yeah like like i said just a series of set
- 45:31pieces and scenes sort of you know that
- 45:34that are good ideas in and of themselves but in terms
- 45:37of like i like a story a linear story there's no real tension built or you know
- 45:43urgency and a full of dipshit characters as well like the the fucking foster
- 45:47sister to andy i do like the the scene where chucky finally shows up and he's
- 45:53you just they just show it and he's in the bottom of the stairs,
- 45:57and that's where Chucky sees Tommy the fake you know the other good guy doll,
- 46:02and he beats the shit out of it and he buries it.
- 46:07Why would why would he go to all the hassle of getting his wee toy spade and
- 46:11burying it when he can just throw it out of the way somewhere I mean well it's
- 46:15obviously so it will be discovered later on I love the next day where,
- 46:19you know one of those relics that the mom has it gets broken The ornament, yes.
- 46:25Yeah, they're all being blamed. And the next shot, Kylie smoking in the washing
- 46:31machine. Then she hands him the smoke. Yeah.
- 46:34You would never see this now in cinema. It was the 80s, man. You know what I mean?
- 46:39It was the 80s. Kids smoke. And he tries to puff. He tries to puff. Yeah.
- 46:43That's awesome. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Kids, you know, seven-year-old kids smoked
- 46:47tea and smoked in films still back then. You know?
- 46:51Yeah, but yeah, you would never in a million years. You don't even,
- 46:53you don't even, you aren't even allowed to see adults smoking in the bulk of films now.
- 46:58Never mind six year old kids.
- 47:01Yeah. You know? Yeah.
- 47:04The scene where Andy decides to go down and talk to the good guy doll,
- 47:10which is no longer Tommy. It's actually Chucky.
- 47:12Yes. And he goes, he just stares at it.
- 47:17And the dog goes, hi, I'm yes. Tommy. He forgot his name.
- 47:23That's actually a really, that's actually probably the best line.
- 47:26It is the best line. He's almost about to say Chucky and he's paused. Oh, Tommy. Yeah.
- 47:32But they refer to it again too when they're going to chase after Andy with Kylie
- 47:38and Chucky in the car and the cop goes, what's your name?
- 47:41And he just turns to him, Chucky. Yes, that's right.
- 47:46It's a good moment. It does have some decent moments, but it's not as well.
- 47:51You know what the truth is? John Lafayette's a newer director.
- 47:54You needed Tom Holland behind the lens here to bring us a little more,
- 48:00I guess you can say class and I hate saying it, a little more class to this.
- 48:06You actually take that, you do have class with some good actors,
- 48:09Garrett Graham who I like from The Phantom of Paradise and those cars.
- 48:12I like Jenny O'Gotta as we talked about. The other ones are up and coming.
- 48:16I like Grayson Briskey who's misused in this.
- 48:18So you do have good actors in there peppered in.
- 48:21You're just not utilizing them properly and it's just,
- 48:26a bunch of scenes put together yeah and and the scenes they're fun but man what
- 48:33we just came from this could have been a lot better,
- 48:35yeah there needed to be more of a sort of coherency in terms of the sort of
- 48:41dramatic tension like we're saying it is just a bunch of scenes yes there is
- 48:45some funny stuff and some enjoyable stuff but it doesn't really overall you know as a sort of.
- 48:54Part of the original and it's just not pulled off and
- 48:56i think that's just down to not the writing but the direction actually
- 48:59yeah and that's john laffia god
- 49:02rest his soul he passed away quite young but yes i don't
- 49:05think the director he was really uh director i think he ended up directing man's
- 49:09best friend with lance hendrickson about a killer dog but i don't know then
- 49:13phil gets it you know falls down the stairs breaks his neck and there's andy
- 49:17in the middle of everything the mother starts losing the plot and then he killed
- 49:21jenny a gutter on the sidelines you don't and you give her her death.
- 49:24Now, if I was in a slasher film and I'm not being killed on scene,
- 49:28on the set, or if I'm not going to be seen in my death, I'm going to be pissed.
- 49:32Especially someone who can actually act and someone with the class of Jenny
- 49:36at Goddard. I mean, she should have been the main star here.
- 49:38Even the smaller parts he gave us, it would have been nice to see a scene where
- 49:43she's defending herself and you feel sorry for her because she just slashed her husband.
- 49:49Mom's ornament is crushed. trying to take care of this kid.
- 49:53She's actually very nice to him, even though he's kind of causing a ruckus,
- 49:57even though it's not his fault.
- 49:59But if you gave her some kind of a fight between her and Chucky and she's getting
- 50:03slaughtered, give us that at least.
- 50:06Jenny Agutter should have been the main character here, without a doubt,
- 50:10carrying the film, and she could no doubt have carried it, you know,
- 50:14because she has a real touch of class about her, always has done.
- 50:16She is sadly, sadly wasted here. Yeah.
- 50:21Yeah. And then you got the Miss Kettle Death. Yeah, the teacher. Which-
- 50:27is kind of just kind of i mean he beats you with a ruler that's so fucking stupid
- 50:32how many beatings do you have to beat somebody with to kill him with a ruler
- 50:35i know plus the fact that chucky is like two foot tall and could you not have
- 50:40defended herself better at least with some of the other chucky deaths she just
- 50:44lies there why don't you get up and kick it.
- 50:46Yeah exactly exactly just boot her out of the way i do quite like chucky in
- 50:51this scene she's actually very good in Donnie Dargo as you know this sort of
- 50:55you know this sort of member of the sort of leader of the Perks.
- 50:59Well no she's yeah she's a character actor she's been around for years she's
- 51:03done hundreds of films she was good in Speed she's good in Devil's Advocate
- 51:07she plays Keanu Reeves' mom she always plays. She plays similar types of characters.
- 51:11She does she always plays someone who's very boisterous yes.
- 51:15But she's good she's no I mean like the actors are there to do their
- 51:18job I just thought the death was kind of stupid it was
- 51:20just to get I don't know I just thought it was for another death
- 51:23basically yeah yeah because they were maybe
- 51:27thinking oh the audience will maybe be getting a bit bored now we
- 51:30need to throw in another death yeah let's do the teacher over you know even
- 51:34though it's never referenced again at all for the rest of the film although
- 51:38things do happen here in a small time frame like the first film actually was
- 51:42that the events of this film happen over a short time period like a couple of
- 51:47days just like the original Yeah,
- 51:49I think three days or something like that. Yeah, something like that.
- 51:53So when Phil breaks his neck, the poor fucker is thrown back into the Institute. Yes, sir.
- 52:03And Kylie's on the swing and conveniently that's where he buried the body of
- 52:08the other Tommy, of the real Tommy.
- 52:10And she's like, oh my God.
- 52:13And then that's where we find Jenny Agutter's dead.
- 52:17So Kylie's now, this should have been reversed.
- 52:21Kylie should have been a good, Kylie could have been a good character like she
- 52:24is now, always very accommodating to Andy, but she should have been killed off
- 52:29with more of a struggle. and a gutter sees her dead, sees the doll.
- 52:33She puts the pieces together. I just put this child back in asylum.
- 52:37He shouldn't be there. I'm going to get him out. That would have made more sense.
- 52:41Yeah. And then, yes, exactly. Well, yeah, I totally agree.
- 52:45Because, yeah, instead we get just Jenny a gutter basically already dead after
- 52:50being killed, but we don't see the death on screen.
- 52:52It's almost like she says, I want off the set. You're rewriting everything.
- 52:55Kill me now and make me off camera. That's what she probably said. Yeah, possibly.
- 53:00Possibly. Well, I do like the banter. So she's driving Kylie,
- 53:04and she's got a race to get to the asylum, which is very easy to get into.
- 53:10And I just love the line where he's like, she's being a smartass to him,
- 53:14and he finally turns to her, shut up and drive, bitch, before I kick your fucking teeth in.
- 53:19Yeah. No, it's a horrible line to say to anybody, especially a woman,
- 53:23but come on, it's Chucky.
- 53:25It's Chucky. But it's not real. Yeah, exactly. It's Chucky.
- 53:30You would be disappointed if Chucky wasn't foul-mouthed and really abusive, you know.
- 53:35I don't want the polite Chucky, trust me. Yeah.
- 53:39Yeah. Then they end up in the toy factory. This scene could have worked.
- 53:43I mean, it works to certain... I like the assembly line thing,
- 53:46but first of all, there's no workers here watching the assembly line, but one guy?
- 53:52I was just about to say that, actually. The fact that, basically,
- 53:57this is a factory but with no workers I know it's a night shift but just one
- 54:01guy that's not the way factories work no assembly line would be moving right now,
- 54:05you have to have checkers and it's quick and here's the best part I love how
- 54:11now obviously we're having fun it's kind of like a fun house it really isn't
- 54:14it they have to go through all these assembly lines where they could be gouged
- 54:19or ripped apart because that's the only way they can get to an exit,
- 54:23so this whole factory the only way to get to an exit door,
- 54:27is through an assembly line yeah the whole factory is basically like a fun for
- 54:33a ride essentially i mean it's
- 54:35very colorful and all as well and you know it's full of children's toys,
- 54:39suspiciously there's no workers there well apart from one who gets bumped off
- 54:42and actually not a bad scene you know with his eyes it's quite a good death
- 54:46but or he gets chucky eyes put in his own eyes but yeah it's all a bit convoluted
- 54:52but it's not bad the hot rubber it's entertaining you know what this is.
- 54:56The hot robber scene is pretty good.
- 54:58Again, he sells it with him screaming in pain. Yes. But.
- 55:02What I found out about this film is it's not as fun and thrilling as the original
- 55:10was. The other one is also compelling.
- 55:13Yes. Just how are they going to get out of this? But what I felt this was,
- 55:18was almost like a kid's version of what we just watched.
- 55:22Yes, it does. It's, you know, as we discussed,
- 55:26there are some good things here, including sort of some excellent actors that,
- 55:31you know, if it hadn't been used right,
- 55:33could have really elevated it into something just as tense and as good as the
- 55:37original but instead it becomes a bit of a nonsensical run around when you really examine it.
- 55:43I can sort of overlook things like plot holes and plot conveniences with the
- 55:49Chucky film but it's lacking overall, I think, and it actually becomes quite forgettable.
- 55:58In fact, I saw this whenever it was first released on video and I could remember
- 56:04very little about it whereas I could remember practically all of the original,
- 56:09you know from watching it as a kid to watching it as an adult yeah I remembered
- 56:15most of it because I saw it a few times I mean I shouldn't like it but because
- 56:20it's still in vain of the original,
- 56:23minus the character arcs story.
- 56:27And some other elements that made the first one, I guess you could say credible.
- 56:33The first one is very credible and warrants a sequel this one takes away what
- 56:38made the first one credible now they keep true I always said that the sequel,
- 56:43if you copy and paste one and two together you play it with one film and it
- 56:47works it works it does work like that it can work as one film so it gets a pass
- 56:52from me on that it is entertaining Brad Dorff is the best thing in it period.
- 56:58But yeah seeing it now it just It needed that serious tone to it,
- 57:04especially dealing with a child who just lost his father,
- 57:08now his mother, and now he's in a stranger's house. He seems pretty okay with it.
- 57:14So we needed a little more. Give us five, 10 more minutes with Jenny Agutter
- 57:19and him dealing with that. Yeah.
- 57:22It feels like sequel by numbers. Yeah. And rushed.
- 57:26Yes. so rushed in every way actually in terms of the whole production of it
- 57:32and the choppy editing and stuff and whatever was going on with Jenny Goddard,
- 57:37yeah it does feel too generic alright guys that's a wrap up for Chalice Play
- 57:421 and 2 we'll be back with Chalice Play 3 and 4 I think it's just Chalice Play
