Transcript
- 0:09Hi there. Welcome to another mental health
- 0:11moment from the Life Live Better podcast.
- 0:13This is a place where we take just a couple of moments to care
- 0:16for our minds. I'm Paula, and today I plan to
- 0:19share some simple and practical reminders about self-care.
- 0:24We all could use that, right? Let's start with an important
- 0:29one. self-care is not selfish. You know, I think it's often
- 0:33misunderstood as some kind of indulgent option.
- 0:38But in reality, self-care is maintenance.
- 0:41It's just like sleep, hydration, movement.
- 0:44I mean, it is essential for our healthy functioning.
- 0:48Another key factor is self-care is not just relaxation.
- 0:53You know, bubble baths and vacations are lovely, but
- 0:55self-care also includes setting boundaries, saying no, going to
- 1:00therapy, managing our stress and and doing things that support
- 1:05long term stability. You know, even when they're not
- 1:08particularly fun. Another fact is that self-care
- 1:13looks different for everyone, you know?
- 1:15For one person it might be social connection, and for
- 1:18another person it might be solitude.
- 1:21For some it's exercise, for others it's rest.
- 1:23You know? There's just no universal
- 1:26formula. It's just what genuinely
- 1:29restores and sustains each of us.
- 1:33Another fact is that small actions really do matter.
- 1:38Self-care doesn't have to be dramatic or time consuming.
- 1:42So drinking water, stepping outside for some fresh air or
- 1:46going on a short walk during a break, maybe turning off the
- 1:49notifications on your phone or just pausing to take a breath,
- 1:54those are all really valuable forms of self-care.
- 1:59Now, self-care is also preventative.
- 2:02We kind of think about it when we're already exhausted and
- 2:06overwhelmed. But its greatest power lies
- 2:09inconsistency. Regular self-care reduces
- 2:14burnout, it will improve our emotional regulation, and it
- 2:18supports resilience. So we have to do it before we
- 2:21flame out. Another important truth is
- 2:25self-care is not about perfection.
- 2:28You don't need to have this elaborate routine or flawless
- 2:32habits. Imperfect, realistic self-care
- 2:37is more sustainable than these ambitious plans that we
- 2:41sometimes create and they cause us more pressure.
- 2:44So here's something to consider right now.
- 2:46Instead of asking what should I be doing for self-care, try
- 2:51asking what do I need right now? Right now, today you need rest,
- 2:56movement, quiet, support, solitude, connection.
- 3:01Your needs will guide your answer.

- 3:11your mind because it's the only one you've got.
