Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Those cheers are for an incredible rescue from Columbia's earthquake.
- 0:11Speaker 1: A woman has been pulled alive after being trapped in
- 0:14Speaker 1: the debris for more than thirty six hours. She is
- 0:17Speaker 1: covered by that blue blanket. Now, the search for survivors
- 0:21Speaker 1: is getting more desperate as time continues to pass. The
- 0:25Speaker 1: first forty eight to seventy two hours are considered the
- 0:28Speaker 1: critical window to find anyone alive, and while Cruz work
- 0:34Speaker 1: around the clock searching for more survivors, the number of
- 0:37Speaker 1: dead and missing continues to rise. CBS News reporter Lilia
- 0:41Speaker 1: Luciano is tracking those developments for us. She is in
- 0:44Speaker 1: one of the hardest hit cities, Perreira. So Lilia, can
- 0:48Speaker 1: you take us through the scene where you are and
- 0:49Speaker 1: what you're hearing from people there? ARTHI.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm holding my microphone very close to my mouth because
- 0:58Speaker 2: what we are witnessing right now a very active search
- 1:01Speaker 2: and rescue scene. Right now, what you're seeing is a
- 1:04Speaker 2: bit of a bucket brigade where people are moving smaller
- 1:07Speaker 2: pieces of debris out of the way. But for the
- 1:10Speaker 2: last half hour or so, we have been hearing these
- 1:13Speaker 2: crews begging. The crews are begging for silence, so they
- 1:16Speaker 2: raise their arms to signal silence. And so when that
- 1:20Speaker 2: silence comes, of course I have to stop talking or
- 1:23Speaker 2: I'll have to whisper. And at that point they start
- 1:26Speaker 2: calling out if you can hear us, make a noise,
- 1:30Speaker 2: make a sound. They are still actively looking for survivors
- 1:34Speaker 2: in that building. The building next door is where you
- 1:37Speaker 2: saw that woman that you were just talking about that
- 1:40Speaker 2: viewers saw in that video being rescued last night. We
- 1:43Speaker 2: were here throughout the night, and these moments of silence
- 1:48Speaker 2: at night are a lot easier. It's easier for a
- 1:50Speaker 2: cruise to search, but they cannot stop searching. I just
- 1:54Speaker 2: interviewed a neighbor who lived on the fourth floor of
- 1:56Speaker 2: that building, and she was telling me that one of
- 1:59Speaker 2: her neighbors was rescued alive the day before, but her daughter,
- 2:02Speaker 2: who is thirteen years old, was still stuck alive, according
- 2:06Speaker 2: to the mother, within a couple of columns there. So
- 2:09Speaker 2: we keep hearing them saying Lamina, Leamina, the girl, the girl.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So we are not sure whether they have heard something
- 2:16Speaker 2: or not, but they keep calling for silence. The search
- 2:19Speaker 2: is desperate. As you said, time is of the essence,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and what you're seeing is even more than the search
- 2:24Speaker 2: and rescue professional crews. You're seeing neighbors who are organizing volunteers.
- 2:30Speaker 2: They do these chains of bringing debris out, these bucket
- 2:35Speaker 2: brigades as some call them, to facilitate their search. There's
- 2:39Speaker 2: also dogs there sniffing, brought in canine units, the units
- 2:44Speaker 2: from the local fire department. From there, they're calling for silence,
- 2:49Speaker 2: so at this point we have to respect the silence.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And at this point they just listen, and somebody says,
- 2:56Speaker 2: if you're alive, make a sound. All we hear is
- 3:01Speaker 2: some dogs barking, some noises from the street. It's very
- 3:04Speaker 2: difficult for them because there are street vendors with these loudspeakers.
- 3:09Speaker 2: There are motors rumbling, there's motorcycles everywhere. And now, okay,
- 3:15Speaker 2: they've started asking to clear debris. We are not sure
- 3:19Speaker 2: whether it is that they heard something, but of course
- 3:22Speaker 2: everyone here is highly hopeful. They saw what they call
- 3:26Speaker 2: miracles in Venezuela, where it was days and days that
- 3:29Speaker 2: people were stuck in the rubble and they were still rescued.
- 3:32Speaker 2: So the woman I interviewed who lost her home, she
- 3:35Speaker 2: wasn't home, but she saw the building crumbled. She was
- 3:37Speaker 2: just right here across this park, says it's not just
- 3:40Speaker 2: a thirteen year old girl. She believes there are still
- 3:43Speaker 2: about six people who could be stuck in that building.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Well, that is some incredibly challenging and precise work that
- 3:50Speaker 1: is being carried out. Certainly we hope for another incredible scene. Lilia,
- 3:54Speaker 1: thank you very much for your reporting. We appreciate it.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Thank you, Arthur.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That is Lilia Lucilla with CBS News in Pererra, Colombia,
