- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:19actually makes sense.
- 0:25I want to talk about house hunting, house
- 0:27shopping.
- 0:29My mom is one of those people who
- 0:31is just kind of perpetually interested in houses.
- 0:35She might have an afternoon where she's running
- 0:37some errands, you know, maybe on the way
- 0:39to get something from Target or pick up
- 0:42some groceries.
- 0:42And she's just like, oh, look, a for
- 0:45sale sign.
- 0:45Let's go look at it.
- 0:47And it's like, she has no need for
- 0:49a new home.
- 0:50She and my dad are not like real
- 0:51estate investors.
- 0:52They're, they're content in their current environments.
- 0:55But she's just, she just wants to know
- 0:57like, oh, that's what it's going for.
- 0:58Look what neighborhood it's in.
- 1:00And, and wouldn't it be nice to think
- 1:01about possibilities here?
- 1:03And it's just part of her imaginative approach
- 1:05to American suburbia is houses are there to
- 1:10be looked at.
- 1:12And, and when my wife Katie and I
- 1:14were renting, we sometimes did similar things.
- 1:18For us, it was more aspirational.
- 1:19It was like, oh, wouldn't it be nice
- 1:20to, to live in a house like that?
- 1:21Or could we afford to live in a
- 1:22house like that?
- 1:23Or what would it be like to have
- 1:24that kind of backyard?
- 1:25Or what do we think about this kind
- 1:27of neighborhood?
- 1:28This all still remained pretty abstract.
- 1:31It was, it was academic.
- 1:32It was imaginative.
- 1:33It wasn't really about how we were living
- 1:34our lives in the moment.
- 1:36And the year was 2021.
- 1:39And we kind of had this plan that
- 1:40we would maybe start hunting for a house
- 1:42in 2023.
- 1:43So still, you know, nothing urgent.
- 1:45We were going to church in a city
- 1:47called Aurora in Illinois.
- 1:48That's still where we live and do ministry
- 1:50and other things.
- 1:52And so I occasionally after church before driving
- 1:54home, I would be like, well, let me
- 1:55just drive through the east side of Aurora
- 1:57and see, oh, that's an interesting house.
- 1:59I wonder how much that is, you know,
- 2:01pop on Zillow, take a look.
- 2:02But, but still, it was just, it was
- 2:04just a bit in our toes in the
- 2:05water.
- 2:06Okay, then in the fall of 2021, I
- 2:08took another look at our budget and I
- 2:09was like, we don't have to wait till
- 2:112023.
- 2:13Like we do this now, like we could,
- 2:15we could just save up for a few
- 2:17more months and we have a down payment
- 2:18like we should, we should do this, we
- 2:19should go.
- 2:20And suddenly, I went from this like meandering
- 2:23sort of interest in houses to like actively
- 2:27seeking houses.
- 2:28I was on Zillow.
- 2:29I was setting up notifications of different search
- 2:31parameters.
- 2:32I was driving through neighborhoods in Aurora all
- 2:34the time.
- 2:34I was calling my buddy who was a
- 2:35real estate agent.
- 2:36I was, it changed.
- 2:38I was on a mission.
- 2:39I was seeking.
- 2:40I was going to, I was going to
- 2:41find that house.
- 2:43Not no matter what it costs, because we
- 2:44definitely had a budget limit, but like, I
- 2:46was going to make it happen.
- 2:47We were going to find an answer.
- 2:49We were going to find a point of
- 2:50resolution and we did and we bought our
- 2:52home on Cinco de Mayo 2022 before interest
- 2:55rates continued to skyrocket even higher.
- 2:57So I'm glad, glad we did when we
- 2:59did.
- 3:00And we found, we found that home on
- 3:01the east side of Aurora, much closer to
- 3:03our church.
- 3:04It's been a great place for us to
- 3:05live.
- 3:05I'm in that house as I record this
- 3:07episode in my little office.
- 3:09And it's, it's amazing.
- 3:11I'm so glad for God's provision in our
- 3:13lives.
- 3:15What's the point of this illustration?
- 3:17There's a difference between having a kind of
- 3:20meandering interest in something and actively seeking it.
- 3:27Because when you're actively seeking it, you rearrange
- 3:29your life to make the pursuit possible.
- 3:32You are trying to get to an answer.
- 3:35And that is the next threshold of our
- 3:37five thresholds we've been looking at.
- 3:39So we've already seen how for many people
- 3:41who come to faith in Christ that go
- 3:43through these five stages or five thresholds, starts
- 3:46with trusting a Christian friend, then becoming curious,
- 3:49which may be intellectual, then becoming open, open
- 3:52to personal change, which we just talked about
- 3:54in our past couple episodes.
- 3:56And then the fourth threshold is seeking, seeking
- 4:01after God, when the pursuit becomes urgent, when
- 4:05it becomes clear.
- 4:07So this again is from the book I
- 4:09once was lost by Don Evertson, Doug Shoup,
- 4:11a seeker on a quest.
- 4:14Those who have recently traveled the path to
- 4:16faith tell us that after trusting a Christian,
- 4:19becoming curious about Jesus, and finally being open
- 4:22to change in their life, they still weren't
- 4:24necessarily wanting to come to conclusions.
- 4:26For each of them, there was another shift,
- 4:28a fourth threshold to come.
- 4:31They needed to lean into the journey they
- 4:32were on and decide to purposefully seek final
- 4:35answers, a resolution, they needed to become seekers.
- 4:40Having a friend become a seeker is a
- 4:42delightful part of the journey to faith in
- 4:44Jesus.
- 4:44It is fun and dynamic.
- 4:47We may not notice a big change in
- 4:49their behavior when they switch from just being
- 4:50open to change to actually being a seeker.
- 4:53But to them, the internal shift is rather
- 4:55dramatic.
- 4:57Their choice to become a seeker is when
- 4:59the penny drops.
- 5:00I have some questions that I need answers
- 5:02to.
- 5:02I need to make a decision about Jesus.
- 5:06True seekers are on a quest.
- 5:08They want to connect dots and come to
- 5:10conclusions.
- 5:11Their questions aren't dodging techniques or casual inquiries.
- 5:15They are genuinely looking for some concrete answers.
- 5:19Okay, I have been, by God's grace, at
- 5:22this moment with some different friends.
- 5:24And it is so exciting.
- 5:26It is so exciting when somebody is actually
- 5:27like, I got to figure out what's going
- 5:29on with Jesus.
- 5:31I need to move just from this place
- 5:33of sort of meandering openness to spiritual things
- 5:36to a resolution.
- 5:39Am I going to follow Jesus or not?
- 5:43Do you?
- 5:43So of course this is incredibly exciting because
- 5:45of the urgency.
- 5:46And the urgency is actually supported by the
- 5:48research.
- 5:49The research that InterVarsity and others did in
- 5:52kind of finding and naming these five thresholds
- 5:54shows that people tend to stay in it
- 5:57for only about three months.
- 6:00Now, why is that?
- 6:01Well, because it's extremely uncomfortable.
- 6:03Just like we talked about how people may
- 6:04be hesitant to be open, because it involves
- 6:07kind of re-evaluating your very self, your
- 6:09need for change, the idea that Jesus could
- 6:11have an influence on your life, seeking is
- 6:14even more dramatic.
- 6:15Because now it's like, okay, I'm not just
- 6:17open to the idea of change.
- 6:18If the if the change is real, like
- 6:20I'm probably going to go for it.
- 6:21It's that movement forward to a crisis.
- 6:25And that requires rearranging your entire life.
- 6:27If the good news is true, if Jesus
- 6:29actually is who he said he is, you
- 6:31have to rearrange all of your life priorities
- 6:33forever.
- 6:34So of course, it's a pretty radical undertaking
- 6:37to honestly and thoroughly seek Jesus in that
- 6:41way.
- 6:42And people can't stay there forever.
- 6:44The cognitive dissonance of weighing two different ways
- 6:47of living life is too powerful for people
- 6:49to remain on the fence when they have
- 6:52that sense of urgency.
- 6:53They have to get to a point of
- 6:55clarity.
- 6:56And that sense of weighing the cost of
- 6:59considering what would it do to me and
- 7:02do to my life if I actually embraced
- 7:04this way.
- 7:06That's exactly the stakes that Jesus sets when
- 7:09he talks about what it means to follow
- 7:11him.
- 7:12So this comes from Luke chapter 14, starting
- 7:15in verse 25.
- 7:17Large crowds were traveling with Jesus and turning
- 7:19to them.
- 7:19He said, if anyone comes to me and
- 7:21does not hate father and mother, wife and
- 7:24children, brothers and sisters, yes, even their own
- 7:27life, such a person cannot be my disciple.
- 7:30And whoever does not carry their cross and
- 7:32follow me cannot be my disciple.
- 7:34Suppose one of you wants to build a
- 7:36tower.
- 7:36Won't you first sit down and estimate the
- 7:37cost to see if you have enough money
- 7:39to complete it?
- 7:40For if you lay the foundation and are
- 7:42not able to finish it, everyone who sees
- 7:44it will ridicule you, saying this person began
- 7:46to build and wasn't able to finish.
- 7:47Or suppose a king is about to go
- 7:49to war against another king.
- 7:51Won't you first sit down and consider whether
- 7:52he is able with 10,000 men to
- 7:54oppose one coming against him with 20,000?
- 7:57If he is not able, he will send
- 7:58a delegation while the other is still a
- 7:59long way off and will ask for terms
- 8:01of peace.
- 8:02In the same way, those of you who
- 8:04do not give up everything you have cannot
- 8:06be my disciples.
- 8:08Okay, this is one of those classic, like
- 8:11tough sayings of Jesus passages.
- 8:13He talks about hating your family members.
- 8:15Like, what's that about?
- 8:17But what he's saying is nothing can be
- 8:19hidden from the influence of Jesus once you
- 8:23become his disciple.
- 8:25It's not like you can follow Jesus in
- 8:2690% of your life and then keep
- 8:28your spouse or your significant other or your
- 8:30kids in that 10% and say like,
- 8:32but Jesus doesn't get to touch that.
- 8:33That's just for me.
- 8:36It's total surrender.
- 8:38It's saying, I'm taking up my cross, an
- 8:39instrument of torture and death, just like Jesus
- 8:42did.
- 8:42I'm committing to him completely.
- 8:46Okay, so Jesus says, if that's what it
- 8:49takes, you should weigh whether you can do
- 8:52that.
- 8:53You should weigh whether you're really willing to
- 8:55surrender.
- 8:56If you don't have enough money to build
- 8:59the tower, then you shouldn't try to build
- 9:01it.
- 9:01If you don't have enough soldiers to fight
- 9:02the battle, you shouldn't try to fight it.
- 9:04If you're not willing to surrender your whole
- 9:05life to Jesus, you can't be his disciple.
- 9:08This is one of Jesus's most black and
- 9:11white teachings.
- 9:11He's very extreme.
- 9:12He's using kind of hyperbolic rhetoric to help
- 9:15us grapple with what it means to really
- 9:17enter into a way of life where he
- 9:18changes who we are from the inside out.
- 9:22And so that means that somebody who's in
- 9:24the seeking stage should be weighing these things.
- 9:26We don't want somebody to rush into something
- 9:28without understanding what it means to step into
- 9:32the kingdom of God as a follower of
- 9:35Jesus.
- 9:36So what can we do to help?
- 9:38What can we do to help given that
- 9:39the stakes are so high, that the timeline
- 9:41is so finite, that the urgency is so
- 9:43great, and that it's so exciting too.
- 9:47Two things I would suggest.
- 9:48We can include people, and we can help
- 9:52people clarify their quest.
- 9:54So what do I mean by including people?
- 9:57Well, if you're like me, you have friends
- 9:59who you don't necessarily invite to church because
- 10:02you're like, I don't feel like church is
- 10:04what they need right now.
- 10:05Like they're a few steps away from like
- 10:07what my church does on a Sunday morning
- 10:09worship service being like beneficial for them.
- 10:12Maybe someday they'll be at a point where
- 10:13that would be beneficial for them.
- 10:15But that's not where they're at today, right?
- 10:17When somebody's at the seeking stage, start including
- 10:20them in the things you didn't think they
- 10:21were ready for before.
- 10:23So like if you go to a Bible
- 10:24study, even if it's not an evangelistic Bible
- 10:26study, even if it's not designed for outsiders
- 10:28or seekers, invite them to come along with
- 10:30you when they're at this stage.
- 10:32If you have a prayer time, right, invite
- 10:35them to participate in your prayer time, right?
- 10:37They might be curious like, what does prayer
- 10:38look like for you?
- 10:39If you're going on a prayer retreat, invite
- 10:41them to come on the prayer retreat, even
- 10:42though they're not a Christian yet.
- 10:44Get them inside of community and as much
- 10:48as you can, get them inside of the
- 10:51four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
- 10:54This period of time is the most fruitful
- 10:55time for somebody to read the pages of
- 10:58the Gospels, to hear Jesus's own words and
- 11:01teachings and his own voice, to see his
- 11:04miracles and his works in his own story,
- 11:08and to begin to welcome him as the
- 11:12living, breathing, resurrected, real Messiah that he is.
- 11:17When they get their mind into Scripture and
- 11:20begin dealing with Jesus there, they can begin
- 11:23to deal with Jesus in real life and
- 11:26begin to hear that call, follow me coming
- 11:29from him in the present to them.
- 11:32Okay, so include, including people by reading the
- 11:35Bible with them, by including them in Christian
- 11:38community, by praying with them, by showing them
- 11:41how your Christian life looks, those aspects that
- 11:43you might not do out in front with
- 11:46certain friends, start to do out in front
- 11:47with friends who are in the seeking stage.
- 11:50The second thing you can do is help
- 11:52them clarify their quest.
- 11:54So this language again comes from inner varsity,
- 11:57just like somebody, you know, maybe in that
- 11:59meandering stage that they haven't started creating their
- 12:02search parameters on Zillow yet, so to speak,
- 12:06you can help them clarify their quest by
- 12:08helping them focus on Jesus.
- 12:10Right.
- 12:11So again, obviously that happens naturally as you're
- 12:12including them.
- 12:14But you can also ask them specific questions
- 12:16about Jesus.
- 12:17So as as they're kind of in this
- 12:19more active stage of figuring out what they
- 12:21believe, you can ask them things like, well,
- 12:23what do you think about Jesus?
- 12:25Or who who do you think Jesus is?
- 12:27Really?
- 12:28One of the confusing points here is that
- 12:32people may think that you have to have
- 12:33all the right theological answers to every intellectual
- 12:36question somebody might have.
- 12:37This is a fruitful time for intellectual questions.
- 12:40But I would say that we have to
- 12:42approach this both in terms of the heart
- 12:44and the mind together.
- 12:46So somebody may have intellectual questions like mind
- 12:48questions like how could a good God send
- 12:50people to hell or how can Jesus be
- 12:53the only way?
- 12:54Aren't other religions valid or aren't there so
- 12:57many contradictions in the Bible?
- 12:58How can the Bible be the word of
- 12:59God?
- 12:59These things that we think of as kind
- 13:00of like nuanced, difficult, challenging intellectual queries.
- 13:09But even in those queries, the heart is
- 13:12also asking a question.
- 13:13And the fundamental question that the heart is
- 13:15asking is, is Jesus trustworthy?
- 13:18Can I trust Jesus?
- 13:21Can I trust that he's real?
- 13:23Can I trust that he is who he
- 13:24said he was?
- 13:25Can I trust him with my life?
- 13:27That's a heart question.
- 13:29And so that heart question can come through
- 13:30in those intellectual questions.
- 13:31So we can honor those intellectual questions by
- 13:34trying to help somebody investigate those questions, whether
- 13:37it's reading a book together or listening to
- 13:40a podcast that addresses some of those questions,
- 13:43reading the Bible together and seeing what does
- 13:44the Bible itself say about some of those
- 13:46questions, etc.
- 13:47So we're honoring the mind, but we're aiming
- 13:49for the heart.
- 13:51And so you got to listen not just
- 13:52for the question they're asking, but maybe for
- 13:54the question behind the question, that what kind
- 13:57of view of God do they have?
- 14:00So they might ask how could God send
- 14:02people to hell?
- 14:03Well, that's a legitimate question in and of
- 14:05itself.
- 14:05That's like an intellectual question, doctrine of judgment,
- 14:08doctrine of God's wrath, etc.
- 14:10Lots of resources out there to help people
- 14:11understand that.
- 14:12But the question behind the question is, is
- 14:15God good?
- 14:17Can I trust that God is actually just
- 14:20and right and fair and understanding in the
- 14:24way that he interacts with everybody, not just
- 14:26with a select few.
- 14:28And of course, for those of us who
- 14:29follow Jesus, that may be a question we've
- 14:32personally asked in our own lives as well.
- 14:34So that's a helpful thing to do as
- 14:35well, that as you're helping people explore answers
- 14:38to intellectual questions, you don't have to be
- 14:40this flawless expert that has never had a
- 14:42doubt in your life.
- 14:44Being honest about the doubts that you've struggled
- 14:46with is actually really helpful.
- 14:47Just like in the openness stage, you're being
- 14:49open, you're being vulnerable as appropriate.
- 14:51In the seeking stage, you can explain, well,
- 14:53what is it for you that clinched the
- 14:55deal, even though you still have questions?
- 14:57And that could be like your own narrative.
- 14:59If you came to faith as an adult,
- 15:00where like you had an intellectual questions and
- 15:02then you came to faith anyways, or even
- 15:03if you've had faith your whole life, no
- 15:06doubt, there are questions that have come up
- 15:07for you, but something has kept you as
- 15:10a disciple of Jesus.
- 15:11Well, what is that?
- 15:12And so you can say like, yeah, you
- 15:13know, it's hard for me to wrap my
- 15:15mind around the idea of hell, but I
- 15:17really believe that God is good.
- 15:20And I see that goodness in the death
- 15:22and resurrection of Jesus.
- 15:23And I experience that goodness in my life.
- 15:25And so I, I trust that he will
- 15:28make a just decision about every human being,
- 15:30even if some of that's beyond my understanding,
- 15:33right?
- 15:33Like that, that doesn't require, uh, you know,
- 15:36a PhD in apologetics or theology or philosophy
- 15:39or biblical studies, uh, in order to, to
- 15:42share at the heart level, what you've experienced
- 15:45and why you still believe it makes sense
- 15:47to be a disciple of Jesus.
- 15:49Now, if, if your friend has a super
- 15:51intellectual bent and you don't find a Christian
- 15:54friend who has a super intellectual bet and
- 15:55let the, you know, let the nerds talk
- 15:56to each other.
- 15:57Um, and that can be really fruitful.
- 15:59If you are a nerd like me and
- 16:00you, you have lots of ideas about relevant
- 16:02answers to all these questions, this is the
- 16:05time, this is the time to actually talk
- 16:07through those things with all of the intellectual
- 16:10rigor, um, that you have, again, always doing
- 16:13it gently, always pacing it to the curiosity
- 16:15and openness that person demonstrates.
- 16:17But if they're seeking, they're not looking for
- 16:19you to beat around the bush.
- 16:20They need answers.
- 16:22Okay.
- 16:22So clarify the quest.
- 16:23We want to honor the mind, but aim
- 16:25for the heart, help people answer their questions.
- 16:29And also part of clarifying the quest is
- 16:31helping them count the cost, helping them understand
- 16:34what they're signing up for.
- 16:36If they say yes to Jesus.
- 16:38So if there's any aspect of Christian life
- 16:40that like maybe hasn't come up in conversation
- 16:42yet and that's kind of controversial now is
- 16:45also the time to get really honest about
- 16:47that.
- 16:47So we might think about like Jesus's teachings
- 16:49about money, where it's like, yeah, when, when
- 16:52you commit to following Jesus, you commit to
- 16:54radical generosity and dependence on God totally countercultural.
- 16:57Jesus's teachings on sexuality.
- 16:59Oh yeah.
- 17:00When you commit to follow Jesus, you are
- 17:01surrendering your whole being, including your sexuality to
- 17:04him and his teachings, which means you say
- 17:06no to every sexual relationship that doesn't align
- 17:08with, with God's purpose for human sexuality.
- 17:11Uh, Jesus's teachings about power and servanthood.
- 17:13So, you know, you want to, um, make
- 17:16it clear that obeying Jesus is part of
- 17:19the package, right?
- 17:21That, that when you become a disciple, you're
- 17:23learning a new way of life that's going
- 17:24to touch on everything in your life.
- 17:26And so if there's any of those like
- 17:28key questions, right, about money, about sexuality, about
- 17:31power that you haven't touched on yet in
- 17:34your friendship, now is a good time to,
- 17:35to bring those up, right?
- 17:36To give them reasons not to follow Jesus,
- 17:39so to speak, so that if, and when
- 17:41they're ready to take that step of committing
- 17:42to following Jesus, it's genuine.
- 17:45They have counted the cost.
- 17:47They're ready to say yes.
- 17:51Lord Jesus, we want to keep seeking after
- 17:53you.
- 17:54Um, we know even though we've found you,
- 17:57that we've put our faith in you, that
- 17:58we're following you.
- 17:59We also want you to keep finding us.
- 18:01We want to keep seeking you more and
- 18:02more help us to do that.
- 18:04As we invite others to seek you, as
- 18:06we help them clarify their quest for you.
- 18:10Do your work in us as we do
- 18:11our work with you.
- 18:18Thanks for listening.
