Latest / Strictly Business / The 5 o' Clock Shadow with Schalk Louw
Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock shadow.
- 0:08And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skullclo, Portfolio Manager at PSG Wealth
- 0:15Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:17Skullclo, if I had said to you about three, four years ago, I said, look,
- 0:20I'm not doing anything in the market at the moment because I'm waiting for the
- 0:25results from NVIDIA.
- 0:27You'd probably say, what are you talking about?
- 0:27What's NVIDIA, first of all?
- 0:28And secondly, why are the results so important?
- 0:32You may have been away for quite a while.
- 0:33Let me put it like that.
- 0:35And you came back and I said that to you after three years of being away.
- 0:38Isn't it funny how things change so quickly these days?
- 0:43It is unbelievable.
- 0:44No, it is crazy to look at these, let's call it semiconductor,
- 0:51AR-related stocks.
- 0:53It's just...
- 0:54what they've done, how they've pretty much disrupt the world.
- 0:59I mean, are you playing around with AI yet, Lindsay?
- 1:04I fiddled a little bit and then I get discouraged because I'm not doing it
- 1:08properly.
- 1:08I mean, I'll go to one of them, chat GPT or Grok or Claude or there's another one
- 1:15called something.
- 1:17I don't know.
- 1:19I've got a whole load of them and I say, can you do this?
- 1:21And then they say, no, I'm sorry.
- 1:23Sorry, that's a public figure.
- 1:25You can't be.
- 1:27We don't do that to public figures.
- 1:29So I think, oh, blast.
- 1:32That was not so typically you.
- 1:34Then I try and do something else.
- 1:36And I find it really, really useful.
- 1:38I mean, I look for things that just pop into my head and I write down the most
- 1:45obscure
- 1:47nonsense and it rationalises it and it comes up with all the answers that I was
- 1:49looking for.
- 1:49Yes, I think it's absolutely brilliant.
- 1:52I'm, I'm...
- 1:52I'm scraping the surface with what I do.
- 1:55You probably do about three,
- 1:58four times the more sophisticated activities with AI than I do.
- 2:03And even you are nowhere near what the potential is.
- 2:08Yeah, I'm not even scratching the surface yet.
- 2:13So it is mind-boggling, mind-boggling to see what this does.
- 2:20And.
- 2:21Scary to a certain extent as well, because it's, you know, where are we going?
- 2:26It's just, I want to encourage you while I'm talking,
- 2:30I want to encourage you to go and listen to a or watch a YouTube clip.
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:39By a gentleman.
- 2:40He actually, we were privileged to have him at our annual PSG conference.
- 2:47He came and gave a...
- 2:50a full presentation there.
- 2:51It's a gentleman called Mo, I'm going to really stuff up his surname.
- 2:56It's G-A-W-D-A-T, Gowdat.
- 3:00Yes.
- 3:01Mo Gowdat.
- 3:02Where's he from?
- 3:03And he, I think he's from Egypt, if I'm not mistaken, but he was a, he's an
- 3:09ex-Google exec.
- 3:11So he's high up in companies like Google and he's very much in the
- 3:16forefront of uh, well, where AI is going, what is it doing.
- 3:21And, I mean, just go and Google it.
- 3:26I mean, go to YouTube.
- 3:27There's a few very, very nice presentations.
- 3:30And I'm going to say again, it's Mo, M-O, and then G-A-W-D-O.
- 3:33I'll have a look.
- 3:36And you say, it's ex-Google.
- 3:37Is the YouTube clip that you refer to the presentation he gave at your conference,
- 3:43or is it something different?
- 3:45Very similar.
- 3:47Very similar.
- 3:49And it was about a it's got a 45-minute presentation and some of these clips are
- 3:50also that.
- 3:52But I mean, in essence, he said people tend to think that...
- 3:58We tend to say, Lindsay, you know what?
- 4:00In five to ten years' time, this is going to be a total disruptor.
- 4:05I mean, we're not going to do things in five to ten years' time, which we've been
- 4:12doing and how we've been doing it for many,
- 4:14many years.
- 4:16He's saying, that's nonsense.
- 4:18We're talking about six to 12 months.
- 4:20We're not talking about five to 10 years.
- 4:20That's gone.
- 4:21That's gone.
- 4:23The way the AI is now progressing, and at the speed it is progressing,
- 4:30it is frightening.
- 4:31And yes, it's going to disrupt.
- 4:33Actually, at one stage, quite controversially, this one lady asked him,
- 4:39well,
- 4:41she's got two kids in school now, what should I tell them?
- 4:45to sort of focus on one day when they want to go to university.
- 4:48Good question.
- 4:50Yes.
- 4:51And he laughed and he says, they're going to waste their time.
- 4:54There's no future.
- 4:56Things like university is not going to exist.
- 4:59It's useless.
- 5:01It's like doing all these mathematical sums and those kind of things in
- 5:08school.
- 5:08And today we pick up not even in a calculator anymore.
- 5:12We pick up our phones and we just solve these mathematical problems.
- 5:18It is crazy.
- 5:19I mean, then there was another clip that I saw of the past week.
- 5:24Anthropics CEO, they're asking, well, what?
- 5:29What is he coding lately?
- 5:30What type of things is he coding?
- 5:33And he laughs and he says, you know what?
- 5:36I haven't written a single code in the past six months.
- 5:40My clout, that basically do the coding for me.
- 5:45And that's the harsh reality.
- 5:47The harsh reality is for people like me, not people like you at the moment anyway,
- 5:54but for people like me,
- 5:56I remember seeing a program.
- 5:58that was filmed about a year ago but aired about three months ago.
- 6:00And it was about this, it was about AI and the way it's disrupting and the way it
- 6:05might disrupt in the future.
- 6:07And this woman went to see this chap in the United States of America whose mother
- 6:09had died.
- 6:11And he had recordings of her voice.
- 6:12And he just, I don't know,
- 6:15AI recreated her so he could still talk to her after her death.
- 6:20So he gets huge comfort from phoning up his mother through AI and saying, Hi, how
- 6:26are you doing?
- 6:26And she'll say something like, I'm fine.
- 6:29Isn't it a lovely day?
- 6:30I see where you are.
- 6:31It's a bit windy.
- 6:32It's four degrees in the middle of winter and everything.
- 6:34But goodness me, you look happy, son.
- 6:37And all that sort of thing with her voice.
- 6:39And I think to myself, okay, Skalk and I speak every Wednesday evening.
- 6:44They could take every single website that you look at and that I look at,
- 6:49looking at the live prices and the company results that we give, et cetera, plug them
- 6:54all in.
- 6:55Whatever they do, they've got our voices from just even just one chat, even just 10
- 7:01minutes of you and I talking.
- 7:03They can recreate the lilting, the lilting little conversational niceties that we
- 7:07have.
- 7:07You do this sometimes.
- 7:08I do that sometimes.
- 7:09We don't have to be there.
- 7:10They'll plug it in and they will have the five o'clock shadow on a Wednesday without
- 7:16us even being there.
- 7:18And I know it because it can happen because I asked someone very similar to
- 7:22the person you've described if that was the case.
- 7:24And he just went, of course it is.
- 7:27That's nothing.
- 7:28It is.
- 7:29It is.
- 7:30But I still think, and the scary part, and a lot of people listen to this as well.
- 7:34I'm done.
- 7:35I'm going to switch off now because this is scaring me.
- 7:37I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.
- 7:39It is true.
- 7:43It is.
- 7:44It is.
- 7:44But I can recall it was the 80s.
- 7:47I can still remember my dad came into the house and he brought this big box, massive
- 7:54box.
- 7:56unboxed it and here is a thing called a PC and he said son you need to learn this
- 8:01this is
- 8:03this is gonna be your new inverted toy
- 8:05I was excited you know and I said dad so what what what game is loaded on this he
- 8:12said well a very
- 8:14nice game it's a game called
- 8:16Lotus 1 2 3 now now now people listening to that podcast will suddenly
- 8:21grab their phone and try you know google a thing called lotus one two three but i'm
- 8:28gonna save you the the
- 8:30the trouble um lotus one two three is a very similar product to to what excel is
- 8:34today it's a
- 8:36sheets and um we didn't have things like excel back in
- 8:4080s and and people said you know this lotus it's going to totally kill the
- 8:47auditing
- 8:47industry accountants are not going to exist anymore
- 8:51Because this Lotus is going to totally take over the jobs and you're not going to
- 8:58need a
- 9:00accountant anymore because Lotus 1-2-3 will be doing it.
- 9:01Well, we know the end result was, yes, that the physical bootkeeping was made
- 9:07easier, it was made quicker.
- 9:09And ultimately, auditors now got different jobs.
- 9:11They look at structures, they look at tax structuring, they look at different.
- 9:17So different tasks were generated.
- 9:21through a thing like Lotus, making things quicker and faster.
- 9:25So I've got no doubt that things will.
- 9:27It's like you mentioned, you try and find something and where five years ago,
- 9:33not even five years ago, two years ago, you would have jumped on your phone and
- 9:40you would have Googled it or searched it
- 9:42on some search engine.
- 9:44Today, you climb onto some AI model, ChatGPT, Claw,
- 9:48Gemini, Grok.
- 9:51And you surf it there.
- 9:53If we turn back the clock 30 years ago, you would have needed to have gone to a
- 9:59library.
- 9:59Exactly.
- 10:00I was going to say it started with libraries, then it went to search engines,
- 10:06now it's chatbots.
- 10:08And I don't know where it will go next,
- 10:10but I do know what's going to happen is that eventually you'll be doing your work
- 10:16on Harmony and
- 10:18Goldfields and Pan-African Resources and DRD Gold and everything.
- 10:21And it'll take you a couple of days to do all that and you'll put it into your model
- 10:27and it'll spew out buy or sell.
- 10:29given the criteria that you fed it.
- 10:31But eventually you'll just go to AI and say, what about Harmony?
- 10:33And it'll come out with everything that you've spent 48 hours doing in 10 seconds.
- 10:38If it knows you, if it knows the way that you, which it will, it'll mimic your
- 10:45intelligence, I think.
- 10:47It'll mimic your investing style.
- 10:48And that scares me.
- 10:49And that should scare you as well.
- 10:51I mean, you'll be dead by then.
- 10:52You'll have made your money and you'll be looking back and thinking.
- 10:56Wait, wait, wait.
- 10:56All these people that are mating.
- 10:58Yeah, people won't have children anymore, Scalp.
- 10:59But we've got kids.
- 11:01Yeah, I know, we have.
- 11:02But in the future, people will not have children.
- 11:04They'll say, why am I bringing this thing into the world?
- 11:07What can it do?
- 11:08What's it going to do with its life?
- 11:11And that ends our discussion for today because we've just gone dark.
- 11:15No, but I'm serious.
- 11:17There will be demographic consequences to AI.
- 11:22People will not want to have children.
- 11:24I know that my children.
- 11:26I'm going to, I'm discouraging, really discouraging them to have grandchildren
- 11:30for them.
- 11:32That's for different reasons.
- 11:34I'm knocking on my door at the weekend and say, look after this for two days.
- 11:36I wouldn't know what to do with it.
- 11:37I've forgotten.
- 11:38But you know what I mean?
- 11:40You're going to be, you're going to be that grumpy, grumpy old grandpa, Oh gosh,
- 11:45yeah.
- 11:45You should have never been here.
- 11:46No, I think where I want to get you, I mean, I think,
- 11:50and what Lindsay and myself sort of reminisce is, I have a.
- 11:55for the past five to six minutes.
- 11:58Twelve.
- 11:58Yes, it's a total, yeah, okay.
- 12:01It's a total disruptor.
- 12:03But that we see in the process.
- 12:05I mean, you're talking about NVIDIA.
- 12:07We know what NVIDIA has done over the past.
- 12:09I mean, I'm going to ask you, Intel, do you want to take a wild, wild guess?
- 12:16Now, Intel, we know is also in chess, but we struggled because it was sort of in the
- 12:22shadows of...
- 12:24the likes of the NVIDIAs, the AMDs, the ASMLs, you know, those companies.
- 12:28It struggled.
- 12:29And yes, it had the change of God.
- 12:31And you want to take a guess, year to date, since the 1st of January up to now,
- 12:37what did Intel do?
- 12:39I know exactly what it did when Donald Trump was having intimate discussions with
- 12:45the CEO and was
- 12:47given insider information on what Intel was up to and what it might do.
- 12:49So Trump and his administration, mainly Trump.
- 12:52It'll all go to the Trump family.
- 12:54That's another story invested in Intel when it was around
- 12:58$19, $20 per share.
- 13:01I saw it the other day at $60, and I don't know where it is now, Skunk.
- 13:05I think I saw it at $60.
- 13:07I see your $60, and I'll raise it by another $60 because it's trading now at
- 13:14$170.
- 13:16No, Don't say that.
- 13:18It's gone up six times since Trump bought it.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:20So this year alone.
- 13:21It's up now 220%.
- 13:24So this is just this year alone, because what you're referring to was a sort of
- 13:31mid-latter part,
- 13:33and it had a run already in the latter part of 2025.
- 13:36This year alone, 220%, 200% of that price.
- 13:38That share price was distressed and a massive, massive amount of pressure.
- 13:44And yeah, there we go.
- 13:46$117 per share.
- 13:48And that...
- 13:49Ladies and gentlemen, is our intro to why...
- 13:54All I asked was about NVIDIA, and now we're talking about demographics, not
- 13:59having children,
- 14:01me locking the door and moving country so I don't have to look after my
- 14:04grandchildren should they come,
- 14:06which I'm trying to discourage them not to because of everything we've spoken about.
- 14:08And it just goes on and on, and that's the thing.
- 14:10I can't grasp it, Skunk.
- 14:12My tiny mind cannot grasp it because in every aspect of life I can see some
- 14:18impact.
- 14:20And then I have to say, I'm sorry,
- 14:21I'm just going to watch a football match or something or watch some soap opera just
- 14:28to clear my mind
- 14:30of the potential chaos that is going to ensue.
- 14:34And it will be chaos.
- 14:35It'll be bedlam.
- 14:36We're humans.
- 14:37We don't understand how to deal with it, I don't think.
- 14:41No, it's going to be a disruptor.
- 14:43And I mean, to what extent?
- 14:49I don't know.
- 14:50I can't tell you where this will end.
- 14:51I would definitely encourage you to go and listen to Mo's interview because he
- 14:58mentioned it's going to be a
- 15:00very, very...
- 15:02dark period.
- 15:03In human history.
- 15:05Maybe the future humans will learn how to work with it and embrace it.
- 15:09That's the thing.
- 15:10He called it utopia after that.
- 15:12He called it utopia after that.
- 15:14Because, funny enough, and maybe this is where I disagree, but he said, you know,
- 15:19us humans,
- 15:21it was never built to work.
- 15:21You know, we were supposed to lay on the tree every day and if we get hungry, we,
- 15:28okay.
- 15:29Once a week, we get up and go and hunt for some huge buck or something like that, put
- 15:35it back to the camp,
- 15:37eat, and for the next five days lay under the tree again.
- 15:40We were never built to work this hard.
- 15:45And AI is just going to help us go back to that space where we don't work as hard as
- 15:50we do.
- 15:50Well, I don't know about that, but I'll tell you one thing, another thing
- 15:56completely the antithesis of AI,
- 15:58and that is Warren Buffett.
- 16:00Now, I just read something on LinkedIn, and I don't know if someone's made this
- 16:01up,
- 16:01but he apparently gave a speech which was rather disturbing about what he's seeing
- 16:08with Trump
- 16:10and the complete destruction of democracy in the United States of America and
- 16:15authoritarianism and all that sort of thing.
- 16:17But he put it in a nice way, and I don't know if you can confirm that.
- 16:20I don't know if you're a buffeter, but if you are...
- 16:26then you might have seen the speech at his recent AGM of Bolkjah.
- 16:30I don't know.
- 16:32I just read this thing and I thought, that doesn't sound like him.
- 16:36It sounds as though someone's made that up via AI.
- 16:39But we've got another thing to worry about,
- 16:41and that is Trump taking away the right to vote and completely hijacking the
- 16:48midterms.
- 16:50And the scary thing is what the rest of the world does if he does it.
- 16:54Do they cut off America? Do they dump bonds even more?
- 16:59My personal view is that people are dumping bonds not just because of
- 17:02inflation,
- 17:02but because of the United States and the administration that is in charge.
- 17:06And they're just saying, I don't want anything to do with this country, so I can
- 17:13get out and go elsewhere and buy European bonds, whatever,
- 17:15Australian, New Zealand, Canada, but not the United States.
- 17:17There's something more going on with the US bond market than just oil and
- 17:22inflation, Skunk.
- 17:24Yeah, I mean, there's so many things that you just mentioned.
- 17:30I think first point, yes, I mean,
- 17:36this is absolute dumping of bonds.
- 17:40So that's a definite, definite worry.
- 17:44I mean, but Kevin Walsh or Mr.
- 17:51The new Fed chair.
- 17:53Yeah.
- 17:54Did you know, just by the way, did you know his, what do you call it,
- 18:00his grandmother-in-law
- 18:11is the lord of?
- 18:13Oh, really?
- 18:14The billionaires that recently died?
- 18:16Yes.
- 18:17His wife is still.
- 18:19I mean, he's married.
- 18:20I don't know what's it, but they said they mislawed him.
- 18:23So that's why he's looking as young as he does.
- 18:25Because I looked at him when I look at Kevin. Now, just interesting factoids.
- 18:32When he was appointed as a Fed governor, that was 2006.
- 18:37He was the youngest ever Fed governor.
- 18:41He was 36 at that stage.
- 18:43Youngest Fed governor of all time.
- 18:45So just interesting factoids.
- 18:48But when I saw him the first time a few months ago, I looked at this gentleman and
- 18:54I went like, no.
- 18:55This guy's young.
- 18:58And then I went to Google.
- 19:00Are you trying to get to the point that he's slapping Estee Lauder on his face
- 19:04every day?
- 19:06Oh, yes.
- 19:08I mean, you're not going to have a...
- 19:10A grandmother-in-law of Estee Lauder, I think his wife goes to him every day.
- 19:11Maybe he's just eating healthily.
- 19:13Maybe he's eating a lot of fruit and vegetables every day, and he's got one of
- 19:16those
- 19:17Korean guasha pieces of jade,
- 19:21and he sculpts his face every day with tea tree oil or whatever it is.
- 19:27Rose hip oil, I think, is the best one to do.
- 19:29Maybe he's doing that sculpt.
- 19:30Maybe it's not Estee Lauder.
- 19:31Maybe he's got good genes.
- 19:33Nothing aids you as quickly as stress.
- 19:36Now, when you start a job and you're a big, big, big boss, I mean,
- 19:41when we talk about the boss's boss, say, well, you know what?
- 19:45If you don't do what I say, I'm not just going to fire you.
- 19:50I'm going to sue you.
- 19:53This is actually what Trump said two or three weeks ago.
- 19:56He said, And they actually asked, a CNN interviewer, they asked him, well,
- 20:03we're sitting in an uncomfortable scenario with inflation, et cetera, et cetera.
- 20:11We don't think that Kevin will be able to cut rates.
- 20:16And he literally turned around and said, well, if Kevin Walsh don't cut rates, I
- 20:21will sue him.
- 20:21And I know he had a sort of a grin on his face.
- 20:23And it was most probably, but yeah, that's.
- 20:27In sort of one sentence, summed up why I feel, in my opinion,
- 20:33why we see the pressure on the U.S.
- 20:35bonds.
- 20:36Because you're sitting with a governor that needs to protect
- 20:44these assets.
- 20:46They need to protect it.
- 20:47And they do that by making sure that inflation don't become a problem.
- 20:53If you're going to be in a scenario, which we are.
- 20:56I mean, the war is not over yet.
- 20:59I mean, every day, and make no mistake, Trump now looks at this and says,
- 21:05we need this war now to be over.
- 21:07I mean, this is now getting really late in the day.
- 21:12November feels like forever, but it's not forever anymore.
- 21:15It's around the corner.
- 21:16And if we're going to go into the midterms, yes, you're right.
- 21:20They might have ways and means to not wreck.
- 21:26the voters, but sort of just get a better playing field.
- 21:31He's not a popular president anymore.
- 21:34Not at all.
- 21:35No, and he doesn't want to be a popular president.
- 21:37He's already said that.
- 21:38He said quite clearly he doesn't care about the finances of the people that
- 21:43voted for him.
- 21:45He said that as he was getting onto Marine One or wherever he was going.
- 21:48Incidentally, he's golfed 111 times in his second term.
- 21:54out of just, I think, 408 days in power.
- 21:57So 20% of the time that he has been in power for the second time, he's been
- 22:03golfing.
- 22:05Yeah, that's crazy.
- 22:06I saw that.
- 22:07Again, thanks for introducing me to Jimmy Kimmel.
- 22:14Did you see last night's show?
- 22:16Did you see it this morning?
- 22:17It was extraordinary, wasn't it?
- 22:20He's actually got it.
- 22:21Again, another YouTube clip which the listeners should go and follow.
- 22:26But what Lindsay is referring, he's actually now got a poll.
- 22:30And it's literally, it must be the, and remember, he actually showed it last night
- 22:37where he said, well,
- 22:39he had this thing about Obama. Where he said, this is happening.
- 22:45And what is Obama doing?
- 22:46He's on the golf course.
- 22:49That was a.
- 22:50back when he was president.
- 22:52And literally 21% of every day,
- 22:57all the days that he's been president, 21% of those...
- 23:00He's been golfing.
- 23:01He's been on a golf course.
- 23:02Yeah, he's been golfing.
- 23:03I want to have that job.
- 23:04Shall we talk about the markets?
- 23:06We've talked about golf and Estee Lauder and Warren Buffett and his views on what's
- 23:12going to happen,
- 23:12the destruction of America as the world's leading democracy, all that sort of thing.
- 23:16But what we haven't spoken about is the market.
- 23:18I looked at the Stock Exchange News Service.
- 23:20Wasn't really much that intrigued me today.
- 23:23Did you find anything?
- 23:24Have you found anything since we last spoke?
- 23:27Yeah, let's just have a quick rundown.
- 23:29I think news today was the inflation numbers that came out at 4%.
- 23:35Let me just tell you what that was.
- 23:37In April, the year-on-year CPI inflation in South Africa, consumer price inflation,
- 23:44rose to 4%, up from 3.1%
- 23:46in March.
- 23:48The core inflation...
- 23:50went from 3.2% in March to 3.6%.
- 23:52And it's almost now cast in stone.
- 23:54It's written in the stars that there will be a 25 basis point increase in South
- 23:58African interest rates.
- 24:00What a turnaround in a four-month period.
- 24:00It was going to be cut, Now it's going to be rise, rise, hike, hike, possibly.
- 24:06The market is saying possibly 100 basis points this year.
- 24:10What do you think, Skulk?
- 24:11That's, you know, if you've got...
- 24:15the Reserve Bank governor that said, well, we're going to aim to keep inflation at
- 24:213%.
- 24:21That's hard and fast.
- 24:23It was always bans.
- 24:25Today, it's a fixed 3%.
- 24:28And you're on your inflation come out at 4%.
- 24:31I'm sorry, but I don't need to agree with it.
- 24:35But that's what the Reserve Bank will be doing.
- 24:39So yes, that'll happen.
- 24:40The problem is when you look at this 4%,
- 24:43when you look at this four percent um and you've got one portion of of that let's
- 24:50call it
- 24:50inflation basket that that increases by 5.5 percent month on month not we're not
- 24:57talking about 5.5 percent year on year, we're talking about 5.5%
- 25:03month on month, namely transport.
- 25:07If transport increases 5.5%, I'm so sorry,
- 25:10there's just no way we're going to be able to contain inflation at that 3% levels.
- 25:15And we just mentioned, the war is not done yet.
- 25:19Iran is sitting and they know
- 25:24Trump wants this war to be done now.
- 25:27And they...
- 25:29They're clearly not in too much of a rush to get any, let's call it,
- 25:36deal done, et cetera, et cetera.
- 25:38So I think the listeners out there, yes,
- 25:41I agree with Lindsay and I agree with currently a lot of the economists are
- 25:47saying we will most probably on the 28th
- 25:49of May not see any reaction yet.
- 25:53Okay.
- 25:54We'll see.
- 25:56I know a lot of people that are saying exactly the opposite.
- 25:59But the South African bond yield will come to you in a moment.
- 26:05Let me give you a couple of numbers, by the way.
- 26:08I'm going to start with commodities today because they are very interesting indeed.
- 26:12Because just in the last half hour since we've been speaking, Skull, the oil price
- 26:19has really started to tumble quite significantly.
- 26:21Brent crude oil was $11.50 yesterday.
- 26:22It's now $106.44.
- 26:25And on the day, it's down 4.3%, we'll call it.
- 26:29West Texas crude is below 100, $99.62, which is down
- 26:344.4%. The gold price has rallied from being on the, you know,
- 26:40it got to our target scale, 44.50, and it's now 45.30, which is up around about a
- 26:47percent.
- 26:47The copper price doing well, up 1.75% to $6.27 and a half per pound.
- 26:54What else am I looking at here?
- 26:57The S&P 500 futures.
- 26:59Nice.
- 26:5974.41 for the June futures.
- 27:03Up just under 1%.
- 27:05The US 10-year bond yield.
- 27:07It's still pretty stalky.
- 27:08It's 4.59%.
- 27:10But that is 8 basis points down for the yield.
- 27:15So it was around.
- 27:16It got close to 4.70 yesterday.
- 27:19What else am I looking at?
- 27:20South African 10-year bond yield.
- 27:228.715%.
- 27:24It has fallen by 21.5 basis points.
- 27:27The day's range, 8.715, which is where it's closed.
- 27:32On the low of the day yield-wise, the high today, after the figure came out, 8.93%.
- 27:37So people are saying, so what?
- 27:39It was already baked into the market.
- 27:42And what else can I give you?
- 27:44I can give you Bitcoin if you're interested because it is
- 27:4777,538 up 1.4%.
- 27:52That bulletin was brought to you by Estee Lauder, a re-nutrient cream.
- 27:56For €230, you can get the ultimate diamond transformative brilliance soft cream,
- 28:0315mm age reversal eye cream, rich foam cleanser, intensive smoothing hand cream,
- 28:09sumptuous excremed mascara,
- 28:11all for €230.
- 28:13Skulk, you brought it up, not me.
- 28:17This must be my favorite part of today's podcast, by the way.
- 28:21We're not being frivolous.
- 28:23It was a good point.
- 28:24Now, tell us about the market.
- 28:25Was there any stock or in the last few days,
- 28:27any stock that has really stood out because of bad results or good results?
- 28:34Let's look at a few things that came out today.
- 28:37I think that's Bytes Technologies, that they came out with a result,
- 28:43basically a year-end result.
- 28:46It didn't look too bad.
- 28:47I mean, for the listeners, I don't know what bots do.
- 28:49I mean, they're pretty much a reseller of anything
- 28:53Microsoft. So if you want to install some server and you need Microsoft products,
- 28:59Microsoft 365,
- 29:01they're pretty much the company to help you and the security tools with them.
- 29:03But they had a horrible first half of the year where their profit margins actually,
- 29:10or profits, actually decreased.
- 29:12But it did seem like they turned around in the second half of the year and things
- 29:17look a little bit better.
- 29:19I'm looking at the graph now and I can see there's been an uptick or a little bit of
- 29:24recovery on a company that's been fairly
- 29:26distressed.
- 29:28Then I think the other one was also a smallish company.
- 29:30It's Boland Properties.
- 29:32We saw today that they, it was by a consortium, Bitco,
- 29:39made an offer.
- 29:41to basically buy the remaining tradable shares,
- 29:45which will eventually accumulate to account to about, let's call it 33.6% of
- 29:51the company,
- 29:53at 4.35.
- 29:54Now, why that's important, this is about a, let's call it a 25% premium.
- 30:01to what the share price was trading.
- 30:02That's not bad.
- 30:04Yes.
- 30:05If you look at it, 180-day VWAP, it's about 41% premium.
- 30:10I'm going to stop you there because it's a bit obscure because I'm a Luddite.
- 30:15My laptop, I haven't plugged in, so it's about to run out.
- 30:17So I'm going to give you $1 at $16.44.
- 30:20I've given you the commodities.
- 30:22Give me the indices, please, Skunk.
- 30:25Let's go.
- 30:26So the JSE today, it closed today at, oh, there goes my.
- 30:30My laptop.
- 30:32Exactly.
- 30:34I'll give you some ups and downs on the individual share price action.
- 30:40Harmony, top of the board at five and three quarters.
- 30:43Data take up nearly 4%.
- 30:44Anglo Gold up three and a third.
- 30:45Goldfields up two and two thirds.
- 30:47Grin drawed up 2.3.
- 30:48On the downside, Bytes down 3.6.
- 30:50The aforementioned Alphamind down 2.8.
- 30:53We Buy Cars after yesterday's results and really good performance, giving back 2.8%
- 30:58today.
- 31:00And, yeah, that's about it.
- 31:02Actually, scale indices, if you would.
- 31:04Yeah, so what we have is that we have the JSE Allshare close to that,
- 31:07114,634 points.
- 31:11That was up 0.86%.
- 31:14Resources definitely had a wonderful day.
- 31:18They ended the day at 2.2% in the green.
- 31:23And then we had industrials.
- 31:26That was up.
- 31:27Oh, that was down.
- 31:28Down 47 basis points.
- 31:29financials were up uh one and a quarter of a percent so in general quite a good day
- 31:36very good
- 31:38something about raul castro just uh crash crashed across my screen let me give it to
- 31:43you now there's some royalties
- 31:45because this is also important he's bored with iran so he's gonna do
- 31:47something with um with cuba uh former cuban president raul castro is indicted in
- 31:54u.s as Trump pushes for regime change in Cuba.
- 31:58that's the next thing that we won't be worried about in the future because the
- 32:02markets will shrug it off.
- 32:04Skulk, thank you very much for your time.
- 32:04Skulk Lowe is a portfolio manager at PSG Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 32:09And that was the five o'clock shadow.
