- 0:00Speaker 1: Happy Tuesday, everybody!
- 0:02Speaker 2: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Fun show lined up
- 0:30Speaker 1: for you today.
- 0:31Speaker 3: We've got NBA season starting, and Gordy Chiesa will talk
- 0:36Speaker 3: with us about that. We've got a little red and blue.
- 0:40Speaker 3: That one might not be fun for the Utah fans
- 0:42Speaker 3: in the building. Jerem Jordan will certainly have some words
- 0:47Speaker 3: about a massive win for BYU over the weekend against
- 0:50Speaker 3: Notre Dame. A jam-packed daily dump. Jeff Schwartz at 1 o'clock.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Some nickelback tickets to give away at the end of
- 0:59Speaker 3: the show today. The Morgan Scali Coaches Show tonight at
- 1:03Speaker 3: 6 p.m.
- 1:04Speaker 1: On your home of the Utes.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Some point during the show today, we'll tell you which
- 1:08Speaker 3: players will be joining Morgan Scali on the Coaches Show.
- 1:14Speaker 3: We're at the halfway point of the college football season
- 1:17Speaker 3: for the University of Utah, and most teams in the country,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I think, have already played six. Plenty have played seven.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I wonder how many teams are out there that have
- 1:28Speaker 3: only played five games. I don't know that there's many.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I think pretty much everyone has had their bye week.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Already.
- 1:36Speaker 1: In the Big.
- 1:36Speaker 3: 12 Conference, looks like everyone has played at least six games.
- 1:44Speaker 3: West Virginia has played seven. So West Virginia and Houston, they're... Oh, yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 3: so those are the ones that haven't had their bye. Obviously,
- 1:58Speaker 3: everyone else, I got that backwards. So Houston and West
- 2:03Speaker 3: Virginia have not had their bye yet. Seven games played
- 2:07Speaker 3: in the college football world, six by most teams. Six
- 2:13Speaker 3: undefeated teams remaining in the college football world, some of
- 2:16Speaker 3: them quite surprising.
- 2:18Speaker 1: UCLA, I think, is.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Uh, the, the most surprising of those, I don't think
- 2:23Speaker 3: there was anyone in big 12 or big 10 or
- 2:26Speaker 3: sec or any land that was like, you know, who's
- 2:30Speaker 3: going to be a top, the, the big 10 standings
- 2:32Speaker 3: halfway through the season.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's going to be the UCLA Bruins. You'll notice.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I didn't say a top, the rankings, a top, a top,
- 2:40Speaker 3: the standings though, a four and a record in conference
- 2:45Speaker 3: for UCLA, but some bad news for them this week.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So, uh, we won't talk too much about the Bruins.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Halfway through the season, I want to hear from you
- 2:54Speaker 3: on the text line, 877-353-0700. On the tweet machine at
- 2:59Speaker 3: Real OC Sports, you can call us if you want.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I put a question out on Twitter about the superlatives, right?
- 3:06Speaker 3: Pretend that this is the yearbook. Defensive MVP, offensive MVP,
- 3:16Speaker 3: newcomer of the year, coach of the year, the team MVP.
- 3:21Speaker 3: maybe the disappointing things for you, maybe the guys that
- 3:27Speaker 3: you thought were going to break out and didn't the, Hey,
- 3:30Speaker 3: where the heck did that guy go?
- 3:31Speaker 1: LVPs, if you will. Oh, LVPs, DLVPs. Let's go an
- 3:36Speaker 1: offensive lease, valuable play.
- 3:38Speaker 5: No, we don't have to skew that negative, but yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 5: you can give some discipline.
- 3:43Speaker 3: There have been some kind of like head scratchers at
- 3:45Speaker 3: the very least. I we're just, we're, we're, it's a
- 3:48Speaker 3: state of the union. State of the program kind of
- 3:52Speaker 3: thing here, but we're going to keep a fun slant
- 3:55Speaker 3: on it. Your offensive MVP, your defensive MVP, your coach
- 3:59Speaker 3: of the year, your newcomer of the year, any assortment.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You could throw your own in there. You know what
- 4:05Speaker 1: I mean?
- 4:05Speaker 3: Like there's always the most likely to in your high
- 4:10Speaker 3: school yearbook. And then there's a couple that had strange
- 4:13Speaker 3: ones in there. Most likely to become an incarcerated person.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Did you see Darius's text? He's got a Halloween costume
- 4:24Speaker 5: idea for you. I think you could nail it. I
- 4:30Speaker 5: could picture you.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So Darius, I'm, I love that you texted us. I
- 4:35Speaker 3: also would like to know there was no where this
- 4:38Speaker 3: came from.
- 4:39Speaker 5: I think it, I think it might be a Darius
- 4:41Speaker 5: can confirm for us.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He might be a Big Spence check.
- 4:45Speaker 5: It's fan Spence has been soliciting Halloween costume ideas for
- 4:49Speaker 5: he and Porter as like a costume duo.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Oh yeah.
- 4:53Speaker 5: And so maybe he's trying to cross that over into
- 4:58Speaker 5: the Sean O'Connell show too, which we are, we are
- 5:00Speaker 5: not against that. Go ahead and give us some Halloween
- 5:03Speaker 5: costume ideas.
- 5:04Speaker 7: Great.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Uh, he said I should dress up as Rex from
- 5:06Speaker 3: Rex Quando from Napoleon dynamite that I think he's got
- 5:10Speaker 3: you pegged OC.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I think you.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Carry a picture of Darla around with me. Is that,
- 5:15Speaker 3: that was his, the wife's name, right?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Is that what her name is? Rex Fondo's wife, his name,
- 5:19Speaker 1: something like that.
- 5:20Speaker 8: Forget it.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Just say, forget about it. Does he even say that?
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, he says, he's doing a spiel and he says,
- 5:28Speaker 5: you think you can, you think you can take someone
- 5:30Speaker 5: like me?
- 5:31Speaker 1: Forget about it. I don't remember the exact line, obviously.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Bow to your sensei is what I'll be telling everybody.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Bow to your sensei, yeah. Let's see here. Key details
- 5:42Speaker 3: from the movie. Eight-week self-defense course costing $ 300 promises to
- 5:46Speaker 3: give the strength of the grizzly, reflexes of a puma,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and the wisdom of a man.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Break the wrist, walk away, buddy system. And, yeah, okay. Well,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know what? I'll take it into consideration. 877-353-0700.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I actually don't want you to get distracted. I don't
- 6:06Speaker 3: want you to take your eye off the ball. We'll
- 6:08Speaker 3: do Halloween costumes another day.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We can do it another time.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I want this to be... It's Diedrich Bader, by the way.
- 6:14Speaker 5: The legend is the one who... who plays Rex Quando.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Speaker 2, Speaker 0 1 of drew carries good friends. Anyway,
- 6:21Speaker 5: I think it got him started. Thank you, James, for
- 6:23Speaker 5: let's get our eyes on the ball here.
- 6:25Speaker 8: Okay.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Come on now. D railing that as quickly as possible.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I just, I hope offensive MVP, defensive MVP, assistant coach
- 6:34Speaker 3: of the year, newcomer of the year. And if you
- 6:38Speaker 3: want any of like the, Hey, where are you of
- 6:41Speaker 3: the year? We mentioned a guy yesterday that I thought
- 6:46Speaker 3: we'd be talking about quite a bit this year. I
- 6:48Speaker 3: think I even put him in my who's going to
- 6:51Speaker 3: lead the Utes in receiving this season. I think I
- 6:54Speaker 3: put Kyrie Scholes as one of the options, and he
- 6:58Speaker 3: has one catch for 11 yards. He has not been
- 7:01Speaker 3: a factor for this University of Utah football team.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I don't think we've seen him appearing on the injury report.
- 7:07Speaker 3: So we have not, he had like 750 yards on
- 7:12Speaker 3: 50 something catches last year and has not been, he's
- 7:16Speaker 3: not cracked the lineup for the university of Utah. Now
- 7:21Speaker 3: we'll have to do some digging and figure out why
- 7:23Speaker 3: it was sort of an out of sight, out of
- 7:25Speaker 3: the mind thing for me, but bring in your superlatives,
- 7:29Speaker 3: offensive MVP, defensive MVP, whatever you want. So this is
- 7:36Speaker 3: coming in on the, twitter at real oc sports defensive
- 7:40Speaker 3: mvp rabbit evans offensive mvp way sean parker newcomer of
- 7:47Speaker 3: the year braden pagan i don't think that anyone is
- 7:50Speaker 3: really gonna outpace him uh but we'll see what people
- 7:55Speaker 3: think a coach of the year so far best coach
- 7:59Speaker 3: he says coach bump uh team mvp overall team mvp
- 8:05Speaker 3: he says way sean or i would accept devin dampier
- 8:09Speaker 3: The biggest disappointment, he says, many feel the pass rush,
- 8:14Speaker 3: but much of that is quick throws and game plan.
- 8:16Speaker 3: He'll go with the secondary. They're in position a lot,
- 8:19Speaker 3: but not making the plays. I think their pass efficiency defense, though,
- 8:23Speaker 3: I think they're one of the highest graded secondaries out there. Now,
- 8:27Speaker 3: we almost, as we're doing these superlatives, you almost have
- 8:30Speaker 3: to take the Colorado game out because it's going to
- 8:32Speaker 3: make you feel bad about a lot of things that
- 8:34Speaker 3: you felt good about previous to.
- 8:37Speaker 1: That game, but.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Big Daddy says, it's baffling to me how soft we
- 8:43Speaker 3: are playing, especially when we have this nasty corner room.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Okay. There's a little bit of a debate happening on
- 8:54Speaker 1: the Twitter here.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Based on what Morgan Scali told us, the QB is
- 8:58Speaker 3: getting the ball out quickly, and so we're not allowed
- 9:01Speaker 3: to be disappointed in the pass rush.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That's a, we'll see a defense rabbit offense.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Way. Sean Parker, newcomer, Braden Pagan coach of the year,
- 9:19Speaker 3: Mac G team MVP, the whole team, the culture sticking
- 9:23Speaker 3: together through adversity.
- 9:25Speaker 8: All right.
- 9:25Speaker 3: That's now it's interesting because in season, this team has
- 9:29Speaker 3: not faced a ton of adversity yet. I think if
- 9:31Speaker 3: there's any mention of adversity, you have to talk about
- 9:35Speaker 3: it being, you.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Know, the.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Unsettled positioning of the coaching staff and of certain player
- 9:44Speaker 3: personnel when Kyle Whittingham left or was ushered out or whatever,
- 9:51Speaker 3: whatever way you want to characterize that. I mean, the
- 9:53Speaker 3: most impressive thing for me is that this team, that stayed,
- 9:59Speaker 3: the guys that are still here really didn't blink and
- 10:04Speaker 3: went about their business. And that includes the coaches that
- 10:06Speaker 3: came in and the coaches that were retained on staff.
- 10:09Speaker 3: And that's something, by the way, that we don't talk
- 10:14Speaker 3: about enough or I haven't talked about enough at least.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Morgan Scali was always going to be the head man
- 10:24Speaker 3: when Kyle Whittingham left, whenever that happened.
- 10:27Speaker 9: Right.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And knowing that we all knew it. So of course,
- 10:31Speaker 3: up in the building, they knew it to a higher,
- 10:34Speaker 3: more certain degree. So guys like Luther Ellis probably had
- 10:40Speaker 3: to make that decision over the course of a couple
- 10:42Speaker 3: of years.
- 10:44Speaker 1: When the time comes, will I also be moving on?
- 10:48Speaker 3: Whether it's into retirement or whether I want to stay
- 10:50Speaker 3: with Morgan Scali or whether I want to move on
- 10:53Speaker 3: to a different program. Do I follow Kyle Whittingham? None
- 10:56Speaker 3: of us thought that Kyle Whittingham was going to take
- 10:58Speaker 3: a different job. So I think it changed the calculus
- 11:00Speaker 3: for a lot of people. But Sharif Shah, right? Colton Swan.
- 11:07Speaker 3: All of these guys had to kind of be like,
- 11:09Speaker 3: all right, am I going to stay or am I
- 11:11Speaker 3: going to move on? Am I going to try to
- 11:15Speaker 3: elevate my position within this program, or am I going
- 11:18Speaker 3: to figure out whether or not there's a better place
- 11:21Speaker 3: for me? Am I going to look over the fence
- 11:23Speaker 3: and see if the grass is greener somewhere else?
- 11:28Speaker 1: And the core that stayed, Mark Attawaya, right?
- 11:31Speaker 3: The core that decided to stick around and be part
- 11:35Speaker 3: of the succession plan are just as big a part
- 11:41Speaker 3: of and probably more a big part of 6-0 start
- 11:48Speaker 3: than even the great newcomers. Kevin McGibbon, we love him.
- 11:53Speaker 3: He deserves a ton of credit. Colorado was in his
- 11:55Speaker 3: best game, but let's not throw the baby out with
- 11:57Speaker 3: the bathwater.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He's been really good. And you look at it and
- 12:01Speaker 1: you say, wow. You're awesome.
- 12:04Speaker 3: But Colton Swan elevating himself to defensive coordinator and this
- 12:09Speaker 3: being the top scoring defense in the Big 12 conference
- 12:13Speaker 3: for five weeks is and still a top three scoring
- 12:15Speaker 3: defense in the big 12 and a top 20 scoring
- 12:20Speaker 3: defense in the nation and all these things. When he
- 12:22Speaker 3: is a first time power for coordinator, he was a
- 12:24Speaker 3: coordinator at Weber state when they had some really good teams,
- 12:28Speaker 3: but it's a different animal in this scenario, right?
- 12:31Speaker 1: So the guys that stayed.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Are being overlooked a little bit because the newcomers are
- 12:37Speaker 3: more exciting to talk about. And I I'm glad someone
- 12:40Speaker 3: mentioned that the sticking together and being part of the
- 12:43Speaker 3: rebuild is, That's a hard thing to do. A fresh
- 12:46Speaker 3: start is actually a heck of a lot easier in
- 12:50Speaker 3: some cases. And for Sharif Shah and for Colton Swan
- 12:56Speaker 3: and for Mark Ottawaya and for Luther Ellis, they decided
- 13:02Speaker 3: to hitch their wagon to Morgan Scali and to say, yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 3: I believe in what you're going to do. I believe
- 13:07Speaker 3: in your vision for this program. And some of those guys,
- 13:12Speaker 3: got phone calls from Kyle Whittingham. Some of those guys
- 13:15Speaker 3: got phone calls from other places and all of them
- 13:18Speaker 3: are still here at the university of Utah. And that
- 13:21Speaker 3: is a key part of the culture being maintained and
- 13:25Speaker 3: the culture being, you know, kind of surviving a turnover
- 13:30Speaker 3: as drastic as the one that we watched in the
- 13:32Speaker 3: off season.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So that's a great tweet from Adam.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I think you can, in a different way, you can
- 13:39Speaker 5: include coach bump this in there, Chad bump this in
- 13:42Speaker 5: there because he's a guy who wasn't on the staff
- 13:44Speaker 5: last season, but he's been on Kyle Whittingham staffs. Now
- 13:47Speaker 5: this is a third stint at Utah, right? Two other
- 13:50Speaker 5: times with, with Kyle Whittingham. So that's a guy who
- 13:53Speaker 5: has known the culture who has worked at least on
- 13:57Speaker 5: the same coaching staff as Morgan Scali, not on the
- 13:59Speaker 5: same side of the ball, of course, him being a
- 14:02Speaker 5: wide receivers coach, um, But that's a guy that has
- 14:05Speaker 5: probably helped a ton in that regard, too, because he's
- 14:08Speaker 5: someone that wasn't here last year but has been on
- 14:10Speaker 5: the staff before.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Another tweet. naming rabbit as the defensive MVP. I thought
- 14:16Speaker 3: we were going to get some variation on, on this
- 14:19Speaker 3: so far. Everyone that's responded has said rabbit Evans is
- 14:21Speaker 3: their defensive MVP way. Sean offensive MVP, pagan newcomer of
- 14:26Speaker 3: the year McGiven being the best coach so far dev
- 14:30Speaker 3: being the overall team MVP. This is from Joseph on
- 14:34Speaker 3: the tweet machine and says that Creed Whittemore will have 100,
- 14:40Speaker 3: 100 yard games and multiple touchdown games. In the next
- 14:45Speaker 3: six games, maybe multiple of those.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Look, Creed Whittemore showed his value.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Not that we, I don't think any of us really
- 14:52Speaker 3: doubted his value, but he showed his value in that
- 14:55Speaker 3: Colorado game in a very, very important juncture of the game.
- 15:00Speaker 3: A couple of plays. If you take those plays off
- 15:04Speaker 3: the board, Utah loses that football game. Creed Whittemore made
- 15:08Speaker 3: some big catches, did some, including a one-hander like Again,
- 15:13Speaker 3: I don't think any of us really doubted his credentials
- 15:15Speaker 3: or thought that he was an important part of this team,
- 15:18Speaker 3: but it probably was important that he had the breakout
- 15:22Speaker 3: or the semi-breakout that he did. Jake on Twitter says,
- 15:29Speaker 3: best coach so far, Jordan Gross, offensive MVP, Way Sean Parker,
- 15:33Speaker 3: newcomer of the year, Jai Moy, defensive MVP, Rabbit Evans.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Jai's a good call for newcomer or defensive MVP for quite.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Frankly, he's been awesome. Rabbit probably has made more plays consistently.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Jai has had some huge impact games, a couple of
- 15:51Speaker 3: huge impact games. I'd like to see that be more
- 15:54Speaker 3: of a consistent thing for him. I know that sometimes
- 15:56Speaker 3: it's opponent scheme, their blocking scheme and whether or not
- 15:59Speaker 3: they're running his direction, right. Being, being right there in
- 16:03Speaker 3: the heat of all the traffic. It's hard to be
- 16:04Speaker 3: a big time playmaker at defensive tackle.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I mean, I think, Guys that have been.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Through this program, the Star-Lo to the Lays of the
- 16:12Speaker 3: world and the Steve Fafitas of the world and in
- 16:15Speaker 3: the NFL when people get used to the Chris Joneses
- 16:18Speaker 3: and Aaron Donald, you get this idea that it's normal
- 16:24Speaker 3: for interior defensive linemen to be these big-time disruptive playmakers,
- 16:28Speaker 3: and it's just not how things usually go. So shout-out
- 16:33Speaker 3: to all those guys, and shout-out to, I think, the
- 16:35Speaker 3: recognition that people are understanding that Jai– fills his role
- 16:41Speaker 3: very successfully, but then he also plays above and beyond.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He goes up outside of that role pretty significantly. And
- 16:48Speaker 3: that's why he's one of the emerging stars on this team.
- 16:51Speaker 3: And at least one person's vote for the newcomer of
- 16:53Speaker 3: the year. Although pagan is running away with that offensive MVP.
- 16:57Speaker 3: This is from Cal on the text line, offensive MVP, way,
- 16:59Speaker 3: Sean Parker, rabbit Evans is your defensive MVP. The where
- 17:03Speaker 3: are you award? And I, there are plenty of guys who,
- 17:06Speaker 3: Nate Johnson. Where is Nate Johnson? We saw, I mean,
- 17:10Speaker 3: I get it. There's too many weapons to try to
- 17:11Speaker 3: keep happy, but very few of the weapons you're trying
- 17:15Speaker 3: to keep happy have.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Elite, elite, elite speed. Like we know he does. I mean,
- 17:21Speaker 5: what are we calling the, uh, did we come up
- 17:24Speaker 5: with the name? Did Mac G tell us the name
- 17:26Speaker 5: of the formation where they're all just in a line?
- 17:29Speaker 5: Like Nate Johnson could be a huge weapon in that,
- 17:32Speaker 5: in that wonky formation that we, that we've seen them
- 17:36Speaker 5: do at least once a game.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Speaker 0 1, a newcomer of the year here, Ricky
- 17:42Speaker 3: Johnson getting the Ricky, the newcomer of the year award
- 17:44Speaker 3: from Cal coach of the year.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So far, Jordan grows.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I like, I like Cal characterizing it this way, the
- 17:52Speaker 3: grievance of the season so far.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That's good for the theme of the show. No defensive
- 17:58Speaker 1: end sacks.
- 17:58Speaker 8: I'm sorry.
- 17:59Speaker 5: You have to save that for the last Friday of
- 18:01Speaker 5: the football season. I'm very sorry.
- 18:03Speaker 3: We will do that now. You just gave me an idea.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I'm going to have to send you, send you like
- 18:07Speaker 3: a gift card or something. It's the last Friday that
- 18:10Speaker 3: we just have to decide. It's the last Friday of
- 18:11Speaker 3: the season, the black, the day of the black Friday game,
- 18:14Speaker 3: which we probably won't have a show for come to
- 18:17Speaker 3: think of it because of the name of the, because
- 18:18Speaker 3: it's a game day.
- 18:19Speaker 1: The grievance of the.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Season, or is it against West Virginia or is it
- 18:23Speaker 5: the day of the big 12 championship game, which is
- 18:26Speaker 5: on a Friday or do we do it before it
- 18:30Speaker 5: on a Friday at the end of the post season?
- 18:31Speaker 1: We'll have to figure that out.
- 18:33Speaker 8: Okay.
- 18:33Speaker 1: This one from 63 51.
- 18:36Speaker 3: He's definitely not the biggest disappointment for me, but I'm
- 18:38Speaker 3: a little disappointed in dev the last few games. He
- 18:42Speaker 3: he's been extremely indecisive in the pocket. There's been too
- 18:45Speaker 3: many under and overthrows on deep shots. It's more disappointment
- 18:49Speaker 3: in knowing he can be that much better. I am
- 18:52Speaker 3: not disappointed in Devin Dampier at all right now. Devin
- 18:55Speaker 3: has been, he was inconsistent against Colorado. I think he's
- 19:00Speaker 3: been pretty darn good in every other game. And this
- 19:02Speaker 3: is an undefeated team that absolutely would not be an
- 19:06Speaker 3: undefeated team if he was playing below a certain standard. Now,
- 19:12Speaker 3: maybe he's not the number one quarterback in the big 12,
- 19:15Speaker 3: and maybe that was your preseason expectation for him. I
- 19:18Speaker 3: think that he hasn't run nearly as much as I
- 19:22Speaker 3: expected him to, but my expectations are going all the
- 19:25Speaker 3: way back to New Mexico when his feet were such
- 19:28Speaker 3: a necessity for them to do anything offensively. And it's
- 19:32Speaker 3: really not the case this year for the University of Utah.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And I think there's a strategic element to this coaching
- 19:37Speaker 3: staff saying like, look, we love Bird Ficklin, but we
- 19:40Speaker 3: don't want him to be our starter right now. So
- 19:43Speaker 3: we're not just going to risk you, Devin. And I
- 19:45Speaker 3: want you to be smart. And, you know, we've talked
- 19:47Speaker 3: to him about this in addition with Dev. Being hurt
- 19:52Speaker 3: like he was last year changed his mentality when he
- 19:56Speaker 3: runs the football. He is now a lot more apt
- 20:00Speaker 3: to dive. He's a lot more apt to get out
- 20:02Speaker 3: of bounds. He's just willing to live to fight another
- 20:07Speaker 3: down and another game than he used to be. And
- 20:10Speaker 3: we love that gritty quarterback who's going to sacrifice his body,
- 20:14Speaker 3: but not against the soft part of your schedule.
- 20:17Speaker 1: If he needs to.
- 20:20Speaker 3: John Elway helicopter at the goal line against BYU, you
- 20:25Speaker 3: better do it. but I don't need you doing it
- 20:28Speaker 3: on second and 11 against Colorado. So I'm not disappointed
- 20:33Speaker 3: in dev at all. And I'm, I'm actually surprised to see,
- 20:36Speaker 3: I understand sometimes his deep throws really leave something wanting.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I really, I understand that there's it's annoying. And neither
- 20:46Speaker 1: of us disagree with that. Absolutely.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Don't disagree with that at all. But yeah, Dev is
- 20:51Speaker 3: playing at a winning clip right now. And that's really
- 20:54Speaker 3: what you need your starting quarterback to do. I believe
- 20:59Speaker 3: that there is untapped playmaking ability for him. I believe
- 21:02Speaker 3: that there is a recognition within himself. Every time he
- 21:07Speaker 3: makes a bad throw, every time he makes a bad read,
- 21:10Speaker 3: you see that he's disappointed. You see that he kind
- 21:13Speaker 3: of beats himself up at an appropriate level. So I
- 21:16Speaker 3: appreciate the feedback. I don't necessarily agree with it.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I would say disappointing. I would say I agree with
- 21:25Speaker 5: you OC. I'm not disappointed in him. It is too
- 21:29Speaker 5: bad that his deep ball isn't better. I'll just say that.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Like that's, that's a one flaw. You can really point
- 21:37Speaker 5: out about Devin's game as a quarterback. But at this point,
- 21:40Speaker 5: like we just, we just got to accept that that's
- 21:43Speaker 5: part of who he is and the other things that
- 21:45Speaker 5: he brings is outweigh that flaw of him not having
- 21:49Speaker 5: a great deep ball. He has an inconsistent deep ball
- 21:52Speaker 5: because there are times where he drops it right in
- 21:55Speaker 5: a bucket down the sideline.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He's like, ah, there it is. Ah, do it again
- 22:00Speaker 1: every time. And it's probably unfair.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And I think it has every single thing to do
- 22:07Speaker 3: with his throwing platform, with how he sets his feet
- 22:10Speaker 3: footwork and whether or not he's anticipating that throw. or
- 22:17Speaker 3: he's making that read kind of surprising himself and being like, oh,
- 22:22Speaker 3: let me get this ball out now, and not setting
- 22:24Speaker 3: his feet and doing it the right way, and whether
- 22:26Speaker 3: he's under pressure or not. But we'd have to talk
- 22:30Speaker 3: with him a little bit more in detail about that.
- 22:32Speaker 1: If we get a chance, we will. Or Coach Gunderson.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Plenty of time to do. Thursday is the new episode
- 22:39Speaker 5: edition with Def this week.
- 22:42Speaker 1: All right.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Also, to conclude this, 6351, Braden Pagan is obviously the
- 22:49Speaker 3: best newcomer, but I will say the O-line looks noticeably
- 22:52Speaker 3: different when Obat is in there and when he's not.
- 22:55Speaker 3: We learned that with Colorado. He has been as advertised,
- 22:58Speaker 3: and that is 100% true. I'm not telling you anything
- 23:02Speaker 3: you don't know. Offensive line, true freshman. It's a really,
- 23:06Speaker 3: really hard place to become an impact player and to
- 23:10Speaker 3: not be a liability, right? there's not only the physical
- 23:14Speaker 3: maturity required, you've got to get yourself up to a
- 23:16Speaker 3: certain man strength and a certain body type to be
- 23:20Speaker 3: able to make it as a true freshman on a
- 23:21Speaker 3: starting offensive line. But the communication and all that stuff
- 23:25Speaker 3: that factors in, Calvin Obot has very clearly done the
- 23:28Speaker 3: work in every category, and he has been as advertised.
- 23:32Speaker 3: And he's not there yet, but he is going to
- 23:35Speaker 3: get there under Jordan Gross and under the tutelage of
- 23:38Speaker 3: this Utah coaching staff. And, and coach Saunders in the
- 23:42Speaker 3: weight room, he's going to be a first round NFL
- 23:44Speaker 3: draft pick.
- 23:46Speaker 1: He's got the body for it.
- 23:47Speaker 3: And he's going to be a tackle at some point
- 23:49Speaker 3: in his career. As Morgan has told us, Derek on
- 23:55Speaker 3: the text line, offensive MVP, way, Sean, defensive MVP, Carson Kalfusi.
- 23:59Speaker 1: All right. Someone besides rabbit.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Evans, newcomer, Braden Pagan, Uh, most likely to win a
- 24:07Speaker 3: fight with a grizzly bear.
- 24:09Speaker 8: Okay. I like that one.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Right in, right in category there. We love it.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Spencer, uh, overall MVP way. Sean offensive player of the year,
- 24:19Speaker 3: Devin defensive player of the year, rabbit newcomer, Braden Pagan,
- 24:24Speaker 3: assistant coach of the year coach bump. I, I love
- 24:27Speaker 3: that coach bump who has been here before and was
- 24:30Speaker 3: not talked about. We did not discuss the impact that
- 24:33Speaker 3: he had. because I think the player personnel wasn't a
- 24:36Speaker 3: hundred percent right. And the offensive scheme probably wasn't right
- 24:41Speaker 3: for a receivers coach to make a splash in any way.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I love that right now.
- 24:46Speaker 3: People are just like, Hey, coach bump must be the
- 24:49Speaker 3: difference maker because we got receivers this year. I love
- 24:52Speaker 3: that for coach bumpers. I think he's a good coach.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I don't, I don't dispute any of it.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:59Speaker 3: But The novelty of having reliable wide receivers is wearing
- 25:04Speaker 3: off on the fan base to where they want to
- 25:05Speaker 3: give some love to Coach Bump. And having an offensive
- 25:09Speaker 3: coordinator that's drawing up plays that targets the first or
- 25:14Speaker 3: second options are receivers and not tight ends when they're
- 25:17Speaker 3: passing plays is a novelty, too, that obviously Coach Bump
- 25:21Speaker 3: is getting a lot of credit for. All respect to
- 25:24Speaker 3: everyone who played the wide receiver position at the University
- 25:27Speaker 3: of Utah in the past, but whether it's a chicken
- 25:32Speaker 3: or egg problem here, player personnel at that position for
- 25:37Speaker 3: years was the issue at the university of Utah.
- 25:40Speaker 1: It just was right.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I mean, you've had your outliers like David Reed was awesome.
- 25:46Speaker 3: We love Ken and Scott, uh, Tim Patrick, obviously he's
- 25:50Speaker 3: done some really nice, nice things. Devon Valey is playing
- 25:54Speaker 3: in the NFL right now for.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Good reason, right? There's there's guys, uh, Britton Covey was
- 25:59Speaker 1: a wonderful wide receiver.
- 26:01Speaker 3: He's a truly excellent elite-level football player. Again, you're not
- 26:07Speaker 3: sticking around on Sundays at 175 pounds if you're not
- 26:11Speaker 3: an elite player. But if you were lucky, you had
- 26:18Speaker 3: one guy on the roster at wide receiver that belonged
- 26:22Speaker 3: in that conversation for years at the University of Utah.
- 26:27Speaker 3: For the longest time. And so whether it was Coach
- 26:30Speaker 3: Bump or anyone who filled that role, you were just
- 26:35Speaker 3: trying to make lemonade out of lemons.
- 26:37Speaker 1: You were, especially when you're in.
- 26:39Speaker 3: The Pac-12 and comparatively, the receivers that were at USC,
- 26:44Speaker 3: obviously the receivers that were at Oregon, obviously the receivers
- 26:49Speaker 3: that were at Washington that were at Stanford some years,
- 26:53Speaker 3: the good years, right? The wide receivers that they had
- 26:57Speaker 3: at places like Arizona state were always outpacing you. The
- 27:00Speaker 3: university of Arizona was always outpacing you in wide receiver town.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I mean, in the pack, 12 years, Utah was competing
- 27:09Speaker 3: at the highest level in that conference with most seasons,
- 27:13Speaker 3: the 10th best or worst wide receiver room. from a
- 27:17Speaker 3: talent standpoint and coaching can only do so much, especially
- 27:22Speaker 3: at a position where you just have to.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Be able to run and jump higher than the other guys, right?
- 27:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Route running is important.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Yes.
- 27:29Speaker 3: The way that you get your hands on the ball
- 27:32Speaker 3: instead of body catching and all those types of things.
- 27:34Speaker 6: Yes.
- 27:34Speaker 1: You have to coach guys up.
- 27:36Speaker 3: So they understand the offensive scheme and they're running the
- 27:39Speaker 3: right routes and they're recognizing the coverage along with the quarterback.
- 27:42Speaker 3: But there were years in the pack 12 where where
- 27:45Speaker 3: you weren't allowing your quarterback and your wide receivers to
- 27:49Speaker 3: have that autonomy. So now this whole, this brave new
- 27:53Speaker 3: world of offensive flexibility and a, and a quarterback who
- 27:57Speaker 3: can communicate with his wide receiver.
- 27:59Speaker 1: And it's a word, it's a hand signal. It's a whatever.
- 28:02Speaker 3: And that can throw basically on timing, not on recognizing
- 28:07Speaker 3: whether or not the guy's open, because he knows that
- 28:10Speaker 3: he can trust that the wide receiver is going to
- 28:11Speaker 3: be where he's supposed to be nine times out of 10.
- 28:15Speaker 1: That's how it should always have been. That's how it
- 28:17Speaker 1: is at elite college football programs.
- 28:19Speaker 3: We spent a decade plus where that was not the
- 28:21Speaker 3: case for the University of Utah. So it is lovely
- 28:24Speaker 3: to see with Mac G and what they're doing right now.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Alan Jarvis.
- 28:31Speaker 3: One more text before we take a break and come
- 28:33Speaker 3: back with Gordy Chiesa. Offensive MVP, Way Sean Parker. Defensive,
- 28:37Speaker 3: Jai Ma. Assistant coach so far, Derek Odom. Love a
- 28:41Speaker 3: shout out to Coach O because... The safeties have played
- 28:45Speaker 3: incredibly well. Best newcomer, Braden Pagan. So almost unanimous so
- 28:51Speaker 3: far from the responses that Braden Pagan deserves newcomer of
- 28:55Speaker 3: the year honors. And I don't think you're going to
- 28:59Speaker 3: find many arguments against that. Keep them coming at real
- 29:03Speaker 3: OC sports, 877-353-0700. We shift gears a little bit. We
- 29:09Speaker 3: talked some NBA basketball.
- 29:10Speaker 6: Yes.
- 29:11Speaker 3: The real season is back. Gordy Chiesa joins us next.
- 29:16Speaker 3: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Peace out.
- 29:24Speaker 7: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 29:26Speaker 7: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 29:30Speaker 7: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Let's not get crazy.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Come for the hoops talk.
- 29:34Speaker 8: Stay for his list of the day.
- 29:36Speaker 1: My list today.
- 29:37Speaker 7: Here's OC with basketball civilization. gordy chiesa on the sean
- 29:42Speaker 7: o'connell show.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Triple header to start off the nba season boston on
- 29:51Speaker 3: the road at detroit philadelphia at the defending champions new
- 29:55Speaker 3: york knicks You can get into the Madison Square Garden
- 29:59Speaker 3: for the low, low price of $ 2, 163 for the first
- 30:05Speaker 3: game of the year.
- 30:05Speaker 8: Wow.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Oklahoma City at San Antonio in a primetime game tonight.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Joining us to talk some NBA basketball, our good friend
- 30:14Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa, resident NBA guru, longtime assistant coach in the association.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Welcome back, Gordy.
- 30:20Speaker 3: How are you?
- 30:22Speaker 2: Sean, I'm doing well. Thank you.
- 30:24Speaker 3: So give me a sense of the, the anticipation felt
- 30:29Speaker 3: by real basketball people when today rolls around, when the
- 30:33Speaker 3: NBA season finally tips off, because it's, it's wildly different,
- 30:38Speaker 3: of course, than football season where you get four months
- 30:42Speaker 3: of it and it's one game a week and you
- 30:44Speaker 3: hold your breath the rest of the year. So the players,
- 30:47Speaker 3: you know, they they've got this kind of like body
- 30:50Speaker 3: calendar that goes with that.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And there's a rhythm to it.
- 30:53Speaker 3: And, and, It just feels like it's less of a
- 30:56Speaker 3: marathon and it's more of a sprint when you're talking
- 30:59Speaker 3: about football season. Basketball, very much different. Basketball is absolutely
- 31:04Speaker 3: a marathon. So the first game, how significant does it
- 31:08Speaker 3: feel for you and the other real basketball people?
- 31:12Speaker 2: There's so much anxiety. It's the first real game because
- 31:16Speaker 2: in preseason, most of the key players only played sparingly.
- 31:21Speaker 2: So now it's for real. And so there's a high
- 31:23Speaker 2: level of anxiety, including LeBron James. It sounds crazy that
- 31:28Speaker 2: 24th season for Philadelphia, he's playing tonight in the Garden.
- 31:32Speaker 2: It's the ring ceremony. Mainstays tell me that the 76ers
- 31:36Speaker 2: are going to ruin their party, Knickerbocker ring ceremony. So
- 31:40Speaker 2: there's anxiety. They're waiting for their first dunk, their first
- 31:44Speaker 2: corner three, their first steal. And there's nothing like it
- 31:47Speaker 2: where it's real now. And then as the season goes on,
- 31:51Speaker 2: it's the rhythm and tempo of playing. And it's a grind.
- 31:54Speaker 2: But within the grind, though, there's just so many ups
- 31:57Speaker 2: and downs. And that's why it's so important that you
- 32:00Speaker 2: develop a bench step throughout the season. So we're finally here.
- 32:04Speaker 2: It's the NBA's 81st season in existence tonight. And it's
- 32:09Speaker 2: really going to be a lot of fun.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Utah does not start until tomorrow night. That'll be at
- 32:14Speaker 3: Memphis for the Utah jazz to begin their regular season.
- 32:17Speaker 3: We'll stay focused on today's games. First Boston at Detroit.
- 32:22Speaker 3: You already mentioned Philadelphia at New York ring ceremony for
- 32:26Speaker 3: Knicks and their fans. That's why the, the opening night
- 32:29Speaker 3: tickets are so expensive. Probably Oklahoma city at San Antonio.
- 32:34Speaker 3: So obviously the NBA rolling out some big games with
- 32:37Speaker 3: some star players. and some big teams that expect big
- 32:41Speaker 3: things this year. Let's talk about that San Antonio, Oklahoma
- 32:44Speaker 3: city game. Injuries have changed Oklahoma city and San Antonio
- 32:50Speaker 3: was also close last year, but what's it going to
- 32:52Speaker 3: take for them to get over the hump and to
- 32:55Speaker 3: be a championship team with that roster?
- 33:00Speaker 2: Well, the Thunder right now won 64 games in 18
- 33:03Speaker 2: last season, and they lost that unbelievable game seven. And
- 33:07Speaker 2: so for the Thunder, they're right there with the Spurs.
- 33:10Speaker 2: You can debate it back and forth. And they'll eventually
- 33:13Speaker 2: probably play in the conference finals, you know, come late
- 33:18Speaker 2: May of 2027. So they're ready to go. You alluded
- 33:22Speaker 2: to Jalen Williams, who's an all-NBA performer, who I heard
- 33:26Speaker 2: during the season last year, and it set them back.
- 33:30Speaker 2: And now the question is always this, what team has
- 33:33Speaker 2: the best defense guarding each other and the bench play
- 33:38Speaker 2: of both teams, which are really solid. This first hitter,
- 33:42Speaker 2: Tobias Harris, who's a 16-year veteran, formerly of Detroit Pistons,
- 33:47Speaker 2: and he'll help them very much. And for the Oklahoma
- 33:50Speaker 2: City Thunder team, They're going to try to just hold
- 33:54Speaker 2: the course right now. But they have a really terrific team.
- 33:58Speaker 2: They need good play out of A.J. Mitchell, who came
- 34:01Speaker 2: through for them last year to continue. And there's this
- 34:03Speaker 2: young big guy from UCLA. I'll get some minutes, Sean.
- 34:07Speaker 2: He was the 12th pick of the draft via Michigan,
- 34:11Speaker 2: the NCAA champions, Adai Mara. He's 7'3, Spaniard, and he
- 34:15Speaker 2: will back up Hartenstein. and that will help Chet Holmgren
- 34:19Speaker 2: to play more as a stretch big man. So they
- 34:23Speaker 2: have these two big guys, plus Holmgren, who's really a
- 34:26Speaker 2: primitive player, to try to compensate going against Wembe Yamba.
- 34:33Speaker 3: For Victor Wimbinyama, a lot of these preseason predictions say
- 34:38Speaker 3: he'll be a league MVP this year.
- 34:40Speaker 1: He could be a defensive player of the year.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Obviously, he's already just at the very, very top superstar
- 34:47Speaker 3: in the league. What areas of his game need to
- 34:49Speaker 3: improve the most in order for him to be a
- 34:51Speaker 3: championship player?
- 34:54Speaker 2: Balance shooting. He takes way too many awkward threes. So Wimbinyama,
- 34:58Speaker 2: if I was... coaching him, is that I would try
- 35:02Speaker 2: to get him more unbalanced. You see, he's gangly. He
- 35:05Speaker 2: has those high hips, so when he gets bumped off balance,
- 35:08Speaker 2: I'm not talking on the lay, I'm talking on perimeter,
- 35:10Speaker 2: where defensive players stay in his body, and he's taking
- 35:14Speaker 2: way too many shots that are contested. So if I
- 35:18Speaker 2: was him, I would try to shoot more on balance,
- 35:22Speaker 2: keep working on my dribbling skills, that step back three,
- 35:26Speaker 2: and then if I am going to post up, There'll
- 35:28Speaker 2: be a running post up, meaning what, in motion already
- 35:31Speaker 2: versus stationary, trying to slug it out against good defense,
- 35:35Speaker 2: better physicality, where eventually, again, with that angular body, it's
- 35:41Speaker 2: a hard time against tremendous defense to stay balanced. So, again,
- 35:46Speaker 2: what you want to do is stay gravity more and
- 35:49Speaker 2: get a wider base and try to finish over the
- 35:51Speaker 2: top of the really defense trying to stop you.
- 35:57Speaker 8: All right.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Let's talk about tomorrow. More complete slate of games tomorrow.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Those three matchups today. And then pretty much everybody else
- 36:04Speaker 3: plays before Thursday, Utah starts the season on the road
- 36:10Speaker 3: at Memphis. And obviously everything is different this time around
- 36:13Speaker 3: for the Utah jazz. You know, last year was sort
- 36:16Speaker 3: of like a formality. Hey, celebrate the basketball season coming back.
- 36:21Speaker 3: let's look and see what these young players do and
- 36:23Speaker 3: how they develop. But at the end of the day,
- 36:25Speaker 3: we knew what the results were going to be. Now
- 36:28Speaker 3: it's about chasing something significant. Now it's about seeing how
- 36:32Speaker 3: these young players develop, but in wins, we hope in wins,
- 36:36Speaker 3: they start against a vulnerable Memphis team who is favorites
- 36:40Speaker 3: here in this one. What do you need to see
- 36:43Speaker 3: in game one for this Utah jazz team to make
- 36:46Speaker 3: you feel like this season is going to.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Go the way we want it to go?
- 36:52Speaker 2: Defensively trying to create turnovers and that's active defense and
- 36:57Speaker 2: being early help position. It's always talk about it. If
- 37:01Speaker 2: you're late in help, there's really no help then. You
- 37:04Speaker 2: have to be early and help. So Zach Eadie, the
- 37:07Speaker 2: very huge person that played the starting center for the
- 37:11Speaker 2: Memphis Grizzlies, he only played 11 games last year. So
- 37:14Speaker 2: people forget that he wasn't there. So the Grizzlies, like
- 37:17Speaker 2: the Jazz, they were injury-prone, but also they set guys out.
- 37:20Speaker 2: The Grizzlies didn't. They were actually more injury-related. They won
- 37:25Speaker 2: 25 games. Jazz won 22 last year, but Zach Eadie's back.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Jazz don't play tomorrow night without Yusef Nurkic, who he
- 37:31Speaker 2: knows out for the first– 14 to 16 games, and
- 37:36Speaker 2: he's physical. Nurkic is out with a plantar tear on
- 37:40Speaker 2: his second toe and his right foot, which means now
- 37:43Speaker 2: that Jackson Hayes, who's a lightweight, more bomber, a little
- 37:47Speaker 2: more stronger, and just recently acquired a Tony Bradley, formerly
- 37:53Speaker 2: drafted by the Jazz back in 2017, they've got a
- 37:57Speaker 2: battle against Zach Eady. The flip side for the Jazz
- 38:00Speaker 2: point of view is that They can score the balls.
- 38:03Speaker 2: They've got to be able to defend it. Next part
- 38:06Speaker 2: about it, Cam Boozer. So it's interesting, Sean, in game
- 38:09Speaker 2: one of the NBA season, the second pick of the draft,
- 38:13Speaker 2: Darren Peterson, who we know is a major talent as
- 38:16Speaker 2: a I'll call him a guard. He's not really a
- 38:19Speaker 2: point guard. He's a guard that can score the ball
- 38:22Speaker 2: and can pass off the dribble. Now going against, not
- 38:25Speaker 2: head up though, but going against Cam Boozer, who's his
- 38:28Speaker 2: third pick at a draft. Also adding a palace intrigue
- 38:31Speaker 2: right now, his former jazz alumni, Taylor Hendricks, who the
- 38:35Speaker 2: jazz drafted back in 2023, Sean, next pick at a draft.
- 38:39Speaker 2: And they traded with a Walter Clayton for a J
- 38:42Speaker 2: for a, Jaren Jackson Jr. will play now also against
- 38:46Speaker 2: the Jazz. So there's so many different things that are
- 38:48Speaker 2: going in this game. The most important thing, though, is
- 38:51Speaker 2: that the Jazz defense has to improve and be more physical.
- 38:55Speaker 2: So we'll see if game one, if that happens right now.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa is our guest talking all things NBA basketball.
- 39:03Speaker 3: A lot of attention is going to be focused on
- 39:05Speaker 3: Darren Peterson as we watch this professional journey begin for him.
- 39:10Speaker 3: How close to the Rookie of the Year conversation does
- 39:13Speaker 3: he need to be for the Jazz to say, yep,
- 39:16Speaker 3: that was the right guy, that's exactly what we want
- 39:19Speaker 3: from him?
- 39:23Speaker 2: Well, I mean, the contention, see, again, the Rookie of
- 39:25Speaker 2: the Year, usually speaking, it's someone that right away you're
- 39:29Speaker 2: going to, be one of the primary scorers, like from
- 39:32Speaker 2: day one. So I just described A.J. DeBonser, who's hurt
- 39:36Speaker 2: right now, ironically.
- 39:37Speaker 8: A.J.
- 39:38Speaker 2: 's not playing tomorrow against Milwaukee Bucks. He has a
- 39:41Speaker 2: left sprained ankle. So his NBA debut will be suddenly
- 39:46Speaker 2: delayed some. So DeBonser... Darren Peterson, they're all going to
- 39:52Speaker 2: score the ball. But part of that will be, can
- 39:54Speaker 2: I score to help our team improve dramatically? That's a
- 39:59Speaker 2: big question. If you said to me right now, rookie
- 40:02Speaker 2: of the year who could be would be either Cam Boos,
- 40:05Speaker 2: but he's going to be one of the first options offensively,
- 40:08Speaker 2: or Caleb Wilson of the Chicago Bulls should be also
- 40:14Speaker 2: right there. So the top four picks last year, all
- 40:17Speaker 2: four of them, are going to get playing time. They're
- 40:19Speaker 2: all going to start, and they're all going to be
- 40:22Speaker 2: possibly either the second option or maybe even the first
- 40:27Speaker 2: based on how it plays out.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Who else are you watching around the league in this
- 40:34Speaker 1: first week, Gordy? What other teams? Because you can't watch
- 40:36Speaker 1: the whole slate, right?
- 40:38Speaker 3: Obviously, they're rolling out the three tonight because they want
- 40:40Speaker 3: to feature those. Tomorrow, it's a crowded schedule of games.
- 40:45Speaker 3: What teams have intrigued you with what they've done in
- 40:48Speaker 3: the offseason or maybe what they did last year and
- 40:50Speaker 3: you expect a big step forward?
- 40:53Speaker 2: Mamie Heath. I'm looking to see with Giannis, who we
- 40:57Speaker 2: know is an absolute MVP candidate again, and what he
- 41:01Speaker 2: does with the Heat. They have a great system. They
- 41:04Speaker 2: used to play slower and defensive-minded. Last year, they were
- 41:08Speaker 2: first in the NBA in pace offensively. So they made
- 41:12Speaker 2: that transaction of doing it. Now they added Giannis. And
- 41:16Speaker 2: he added Klay Thompson as a shooter. So now the
- 41:22Speaker 2: question is, can Davian Mitchell, who's going to be the
- 41:25Speaker 2: starting point guard, can he hold in there against the
- 41:28Speaker 2: other starting point guards? Can Andrew Wiggins make another step?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Can Tim Hardaway off the bench score the ball for them?
- 41:37Speaker 2: But Giannis is the biggest acquisition, along with Bobby Portis
- 41:42Speaker 2: is part of that trade, and they left out purposely
- 41:44Speaker 2: the rocker Gibraltar, Bam Adebato. So the Heat could make
- 41:49Speaker 2: the biggest underrated movement in the Eastern Conference because they
- 41:53Speaker 2: are talented. They have been one of the best coaches
- 41:56Speaker 2: in the NBA and Eric Spolstrom, and no one's talking
- 41:59Speaker 2: about them. So, again, I'm following the Heat, and especially Giannis.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Can he be... mentally focused now with a new team
- 42:08Speaker 2: in South Beach, can it give them a new energy level?
- 42:12Speaker 2: You know, Sean, like any business, when you change, quote, jobs,
- 42:16Speaker 2: change teams, it gives you a second chance now, almost
- 42:19Speaker 2: like a do-over, the things they didn't like or didn't
- 42:22Speaker 2: do well based on you with the new situation. I
- 42:26Speaker 2: told you so I can still play.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Gordy, who's going to be the... League MVP, who's going
- 42:33Speaker 3: to be the defensive player of the year? Who's going
- 42:34Speaker 3: to be the coach of the year?
- 42:39Speaker 2: Let's go first. Defensive player of the year, Victor Wembe-Yomber. Absolutely.
- 42:44Speaker 2: He will be. He changes every game defensively. He can
- 42:47Speaker 2: steal the ball, and he really plays hard, which is
- 42:50Speaker 2: actually commendable. All right, MVP. I'm going to lean towards.
- 42:58Speaker 7: Giannis.
- 43:00Speaker 8: Giannis.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Giannis over Nikolai Jokic, who we all love also,
- 43:06Speaker 2: and Shea Julius Alexander. Again, all those guys are certainly worthy. Absolutely.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I'm just going to lean towards Giannis this year as
- 43:15Speaker 2: far as a rebirth. So it's going to be interesting.
- 43:19Speaker 2: You said coach of the year. Usually speaking, Sean, most
- 43:25Speaker 2: times it's a team that is a turnaround coach, you know,
- 43:28Speaker 2: where the team was struggling and then suddenly they turned
- 43:31Speaker 2: it around based on either injuries now came back, those
- 43:35Speaker 2: players came back, or it's a pop in the air
- 43:38Speaker 2: as far as just really getting better. So with that said,
- 43:48Speaker 2: I think it's going to be Quinn Snyder of the
- 43:51Speaker 2: Atlanta Hawks.
- 43:51Speaker 8: Okay.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Who has a good roster, and they did very well
- 43:56Speaker 2: last year. Sean, I have a question for you, though. Sean,
- 43:58Speaker 2: do you realize that right now the NBA is the
- 44:02Speaker 2: 81st season and that it's been so many people from
- 44:08Speaker 2: different countries. This year, Sean, to start the season right
- 44:12Speaker 2: now today, they are 125 international players in the NBA.
- 44:17Speaker 2: including 41 countries and six continents. So, Sean, here's the
- 44:22Speaker 2: question to you. Name me all the continents that NBA
- 44:27Speaker 2: players are coming from.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Well, every one of them except Antarctica sounds like it's represented, right?
- 44:34Speaker 3: North America, South America, tons from Europe. Africa has a few. Asia, obviously,
- 44:41Speaker 3: is such a massive continent.
- 44:43Speaker 1: It spans.
- 44:44Speaker 3: all of those West Asian countries. And I don't think
- 44:47Speaker 3: there's many from Southeast Asia, but every single one except
- 44:51Speaker 3: Antarctica in Australia, right?
- 44:54Speaker 2: No, the answer is you're correct.
- 44:56Speaker 7: Right.
- 44:57Speaker 2: The only continent not represented in the NBA roster is Antarctica.
- 45:02Speaker 2: And so, yeah, Australia with all the players. So this
- 45:05Speaker 2: year in the NBA, the leading country as far as
- 45:08Speaker 2: with the most players that are non-American. is France, led
- 45:12Speaker 2: by Victor Wambayama. They have 17 guys on their roster,
- 45:16Speaker 2: and Canada is second international players with 16, and Australia
- 45:21Speaker 2: is third with nine players. So, Sean, I'm impressed by
- 45:25Speaker 2: your sixth-grade geography teacher that taught you very well about Antarctica.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I'm very impressed.
- 45:31Speaker 7: Yes.
- 45:33Speaker 1: No penguins playing in the NBA, as far as we know.
- 45:37Speaker 2: But you never know, Sean. The globalization, who knows, Sean,
- 45:41Speaker 2: someday you might own that team someday, you and James Peterson.
- 45:45Speaker 3: I could see putting an NBA franchise down there just
- 45:49Speaker 3: off the coast of Patagonia, Antarctica.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 45:53Speaker 1: There we go.
- 45:53Speaker 2: And, Sean, just one quick thing about it before I
- 45:55Speaker 2: get to the list. So now is getting this NBA
- 46:00Speaker 2: season starts, but also the sadness of some guys getting cut.
- 46:05Speaker 2: So locally here, Dylan Jones, a former first-round pick of
- 46:08Speaker 2: the Thunder via Weber State, got cut by the 76ers.
- 46:13Speaker 2: So this Saturday is the G League draft. So probably
- 46:17Speaker 2: Dylan Jones will be in the draft also. And Gabe Mattson,
- 46:21Speaker 2: former Utah standout, was cut recently by the Heat. And
- 46:25Speaker 2: then cut recently... Happened yesterday by the Grizzlies was Walter Clayton,
- 46:32Speaker 2: the 18th pick of the draft. So he'll be dropping
- 46:34Speaker 2: the G League come draft day on Saturday. And also
- 46:39Speaker 2: cut was Dwight Powell, a 12-year veteran of them. Dallas
- 46:46Speaker 2: Mavericks got cut. And interesting with the Lakers, my last
- 46:49Speaker 2: one is the Lakers. Dalton Kinnick, who once scored 40
- 46:52Speaker 2: points in an NBA game versus the Jazz, who was
- 46:55Speaker 2: the 17th pick of the 2024 draft, got cut. So, Sean,
- 47:00Speaker 2: NBA basketball is very exhilarating, but also the business of
- 47:04Speaker 2: basketball sometimes is very cruel.
- 47:07Speaker 1: What's your list today, Gordy?
- 47:09Speaker 2: My list today, Sean, is based on playing the game
- 47:14Speaker 2: as far as being available. All-time franchise leaders of the
- 47:18Speaker 2: Utah Jazz, of most games played, were in Utah Jazz uniform.
- 47:23Speaker 2: This is just only playing for the Jazz career games played.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I had to join to coach eight of these players
- 47:31Speaker 2: on this list. I cut it off at 10. The
- 47:33Speaker 2: 10th most games played by a jazz player in a
- 47:36Speaker 2: jazz uniform. Number 10, Rudy Gobert. He played in 611
- 47:41Speaker 2: jazz games. Number nine, his nickname was B.
- 47:44Speaker 7: Russ.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Brian Russell played in 628 games. Number eight, nickname was D.
- 47:50Speaker 7: Fave.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Derek Favors played in 644 jazz games. Number seven, The
- 47:56Speaker 2: jazz-owned Russian comet, Andrei Karolinko, he played in a total
- 48:00Speaker 2: of 681 games. Number six, Greg Ostertag, Big O, played
- 48:05Speaker 2: in 700 jazz games. Number five, all-time, Big T, Thurl Bailey,
- 48:11Speaker 2: played in 708 jazz games. Number four, all-time, Dr. Donkenstein,
- 48:17Speaker 2: Del Griffin, played in 765 games. Number three, Mark Eaton,
- 48:22Speaker 2: played in 875 contests. Second player of all time in
- 48:27Speaker 2: jazz history with the most games played is Karl Malone
- 48:30Speaker 2: with 1,434 games. But Sean, let's add to that. He
- 48:35Speaker 2: only missed 13 games in 18 jazz career years, but
- 48:40Speaker 2: the majority of the games absentee was based on being
- 48:42Speaker 2: suspended for previous game fighting. So Carl only missed 13 games,
- 48:48Speaker 2: mostly because of fighting. And the number one player of
- 48:50Speaker 2: all time in jazz history for the most games played
- 48:54Speaker 2: is John Stockton, the Iron Man. He played in 1,504
- 48:59Speaker 2: games quickly in his 19-year-old brilliant career. 17 times he
- 49:04Speaker 2: played in every game that season. 15 times he played
- 49:08Speaker 2: in all 82 games. In the lockout year of 1999,
- 49:10Speaker 2: John played in all 50 games. So John Stockton only
- 49:15Speaker 2: missed 22 games in 19 years. Presently, the Jazz leader
- 49:21Speaker 2: right now on the roster is most games played in
- 49:23Speaker 2: Jazz uniform is Larry Malkin. He played in 218 skirmishes
- 49:31Speaker 2: as a Jazz player right now. Thus, that's my list
- 49:35Speaker 2: of today.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Gordy, you're the man. Enjoy the opening night of the
- 49:39Speaker 3: NBA season. Appreciate you, my friend.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Thanks, Sean.
- 49:42Speaker 8: Peace out.
- 49:43Speaker 3: That's Gordy Chiesa. Great stuff from Gordy every time we
- 49:46Speaker 3: get a chance to talk to him. That conversation brought
- 49:48Speaker 3: to you by Aladdin Industries, your Utah V-Lux dealer. If
- 49:52Speaker 3: you're looking for a skylight, Aladdin Industries has you covered.
- 49:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Gordy inspired me. We're going to quiz James and see
- 50:01Speaker 3: if he knows how many NBA teams have an international
- 50:06Speaker 3: player on them. That's next on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 50:09Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 50:10Speaker 10: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 50:19Speaker 10: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Jerem Jordan joins us next to talk a little red
- 50:34Speaker 3: and blue coming off of BYU's massive win over Notre
- 50:37Speaker 3: Dame on the weekend that vaulted the Cougars into the
- 50:42Speaker 3: number two ranking in the country. Kalani Satake has since
- 50:44Speaker 3: called that ranking rat poison. To quote, I believe, Nick Saban.
- 50:49Speaker 3: But we were just talking with Gordie Chiesa about the
- 50:52Speaker 3: international flavor in the NBA, which continues to grow. James Peterson,
- 50:57Speaker 3: how many NBA teams have an international player on them?
- 51:01Speaker 5: Total guests. I'm going to say 30 because that's the
- 51:08Speaker 5: international invasion. Like there's gotta be at least one on
- 51:10Speaker 5: every team. There's one on every single team.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Correct. Ding, ding, ding. You get your own James Peterson
- 51:15Speaker 1: bonus points.
- 51:17Speaker 8: Yes.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Which NBA team has the most, the highest number.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Of international most.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Just And actually there's three that all have the same number. Oh, there's,
- 51:28Speaker 3: there's three teams tied for first, tied for first place.
- 51:32Speaker 3: When it comes to international representation, if you name any
- 51:34Speaker 3: one of them, you get your own bonus points.
- 51:36Speaker 5: Again, there's a lot of pressure here. I'm, I'm just
- 51:39Speaker 5: thinking out loud a little bit and then I'll give
- 51:41Speaker 5: my answer. The jazz have been near the top for
- 51:44Speaker 5: many years. So that seems like that'd be a pretty
- 51:48Speaker 5: good guess.
- 51:50Speaker 6: Um, Yeah.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I'm going to guess that the jazz are one of them.
- 51:54Speaker 1: They're not, they're not.
- 51:57Speaker 3: Dallas, Miami and Washington each have seven international players on
- 52:01Speaker 3: the roster.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Gordy mentioned this, that that's.
- 52:05Speaker 5: Kyrie Irving count as an international player since he was
- 52:08Speaker 5: born in Australia.
- 52:10Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know if they're counting him.
- 52:12Speaker 3: I think you probably have to have citizenship. And so
- 52:15Speaker 3: if he does, I think he might have dual citizenship,
- 52:17Speaker 3: but I could be wrong. He might count then. Uh,
- 52:22Speaker 3: France does lead the way Canada is next. Then Australia
- 52:27Speaker 3: count though, since there is a different country.
- 52:29Speaker 5: I know that they're technically international, but they, they, they
- 52:34Speaker 5: grow up loving, I mean, hockey's number one, but they
- 52:37Speaker 5: grow up basketball's a big deal has always been a
- 52:40Speaker 5: big deal there too.
- 52:41Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 1: But it's a different country.
- 52:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Australia with nine Germany, Nigeria, and Serbia each have six
- 52:50Speaker 3: a piece. I was looking for, I'm trying to find
- 52:53Speaker 3: the list of, because it's 43 countries. I'm trying to
- 52:57Speaker 3: find the list of all 43. Of all 43. So
- 52:59Speaker 3: we can make fun of the ones that don't have any.
- 53:03Speaker 3: I believe Israel, Denny Avdia, I believe is Israeli. So
- 53:06Speaker 3: even Israel has some representation, which would be one that
- 53:11Speaker 3: you'd be like, I doubt if you're going to throw
- 53:13Speaker 3: out names.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Maybe Israel doesn't have one. They've got at least one
- 53:17Speaker 1: all-star at that.
- 53:18Speaker 3: You know what?
- 53:19Speaker 1: I don't want to. I'm not going to say it.
- 53:25Speaker 3: We're going to, we're going to, I'm not going to
- 53:28Speaker 3: say it because I want to do like a, I
- 53:30Speaker 3: want to, I want to do a trivia thing here
- 53:32Speaker 3: with these.
- 53:32Speaker 6: Yeah. Okay.
- 53:33Speaker 5: And I don't want to get Nickelback tickets to give
- 53:35Speaker 5: away later. Maybe that could be tough.
- 53:36Speaker 3: I don't want to have, I don't want to have
- 53:37Speaker 3: anybody Googling and influencing their knowledge base in anticipation of
- 53:43Speaker 3: a ticket giveaway. But I want to create some trivia
- 53:46Speaker 3: based on this. Cause it's fascinating to me that the NBA,
- 53:50Speaker 3: I don't know that the NBA, spoken strategy was, Hey,
- 53:55Speaker 3: let's do this dream team thing and explode this game
- 53:58Speaker 3: around the world. That obviously was a huge driver and
- 54:02Speaker 3: a part of the result.
- 54:03Speaker 5: In fact, I would say that the dream team, the
- 54:07Speaker 5: decision to field the dream team was quite the opposite.
- 54:10Speaker 5: They wanted to squash the rest of the world. And
- 54:13Speaker 5: instead they inspired the rest of the world to compete.
- 54:16Speaker 3: And now you actually have real tests for your international superstars.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Shout out to Oscar Schmidt, by the way, the leading
- 54:24Speaker 5: scorer in the history of professional basketball anywhere in the world,
- 54:28Speaker 5: almost 50,000 points. I've just recently discovered this. He might
- 54:39Speaker 5: have the biggest claim as to why the NBA went
- 54:42Speaker 5: to the Dream Team. He scored 47 points, led a
- 54:46Speaker 5: Brazilian comeback, a 26-point comeback in the second half in
- 54:51Speaker 5: the Pan American Games in 87, and led Brazil to
- 54:55Speaker 5: the gold medal over College Stars-led Team USA team after
- 55:01Speaker 5: they were up by 26 points. And then they lose
- 55:05Speaker 5: in the 88 Olympics. They lose in the gold medal
- 55:07Speaker 5: game in the 88 Olympics. And then they decide in
- 55:11Speaker 5: 92 to bring the dream team. So Oscar Schmidt and
- 55:14Speaker 5: Brazil might be the reason why.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Anyway, shout out to him.
- 55:18Speaker 3: Which league do you think has the most countries represented
- 55:22Speaker 3: on rosters? NBA, major league, baseball, NHL, NFL.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Feels like it's way behind in those.
- 55:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 55:29Speaker 5: But, but those other three leagues, at least perception is
- 55:34Speaker 5: a lot more of a global game for sure.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Uh, it's NBA or baseball. I would say I'm going
- 55:41Speaker 1: to go with NBA. All right. We'll, uh, we'll check later.
- 55:44Speaker 1: We'll check later. We'll figure it out right now. We
- 55:48Speaker 1: take a break.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Jerem Jordan comes on next, and we talk a little
- 55:51Speaker 3: red and blue. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 55:54Speaker 3: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 55:54Speaker 1: My father.
- 55:59Speaker 8: Taught me many things.
- 56:01Speaker 7: You know what they say.
- 56:02Speaker 1: He taught me, keep your friends close.
- 56:06Speaker 8: Put your enemies close.
- 56:07Speaker 7: Time to check in on the team down south.
- 56:10Speaker 1: They have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue.
- 56:13Speaker 7: This is the Red and Blue on the Sean O'Connell
- 56:15Speaker 7: Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700.
- 56:19Speaker 10: At 92.1 FM.
- 56:19Speaker 3: This ends now.
- 56:20Speaker 9: 985 West, Summit Ridge Parkway in Santa Quinn.
- 56:36Speaker 3: That's where you can find Murdoch Ford in Santa Quinn.
- 56:38Speaker 3: They bring us red and blue every single week here
- 56:41Speaker 3: on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 56:42Speaker 8: 385-521-1048.
- 56:45Speaker 3: How about right now? Synthetic blend oil change, tire rotation
- 56:52Speaker 3: and pressure check, brake inspection, vehicle checkup, fluid top off,
- 56:55Speaker 3: battery test, filter check, belts and hoses. They'll check it
- 57:00Speaker 3: all for you. It's called The Works. Tell them you
- 57:03Speaker 3: want The Works at Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn.
- 57:06Speaker 1: They'll hang out.
- 57:08Speaker 3: Jerem Jordan is kind enough to join us today from
- 57:11Speaker 3: Big 12 Basketball Media Days. He's doing double duty, talking football,
- 57:16Speaker 3: and getting ready for a college.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Basketball season right around the corner. Jerem Jordan, welcome back.
- 57:21Speaker 1: How are you?
- 57:23Speaker 6: Hey, I'm doing great. Yeah, boots on the ground, literally
- 57:25Speaker 6: on the court. Get me a ball at Big 12
- 57:28Speaker 6: Basketball Media Days. It's awesome, man. And you know, it's funny.
- 57:32Speaker 6: We didn't know whether this was going to be a
- 57:34Speaker 6: welcome distraction post-Notre Dame or just straight up distraction. It
- 57:38Speaker 6: is a distraction because all people want to talk about
- 57:40Speaker 6: is BYU beating Notre Dame in football here at Basketball
- 57:42Speaker 6: Media Days, man. Anyone wearing blue is a pretty popular
- 57:45Speaker 6: person here.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Well, look, we talked about what it would mean if
- 57:50Speaker 3: BYU was able to pull off this win and it
- 57:52Speaker 3: wasn't upset, according to Vegas.
- 57:55Speaker 1: And of course they did.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Now that it actually happened, does what you expected it
- 58:01Speaker 3: would mean and what has actually, you know, the feeling
- 58:04Speaker 3: around it, do those two things match up?
- 58:07Speaker 6: They do not. It's actually bigger than I thought. It's
- 58:10Speaker 6: better than I thought. You know, obviously certain people are
- 58:13Speaker 6: focusing on certain is the number two team in the country.
- 58:21Speaker 6: And there's conversation about BYU deserving to be number one
- 58:24Speaker 6: at this point. And a lot of that has to
- 58:25Speaker 6: do with the respect for Notre Dame, obviously the program,
- 58:29Speaker 6: who they are the last couple of years, who they
- 58:30Speaker 6: are this year. It was just awesome to see that
- 58:33Speaker 6: BYU was as physical and as fast and as good
- 58:37Speaker 6: as Notre Dame. And so it's, it's gnarly to think about,
- 58:40Speaker 6: but that was the best win in the Kalani Saki era.
- 58:42Speaker 6: You could argue it's the best win given the college
- 58:47Speaker 6: football playoffs and the rankings and kind of what you've
- 58:50Speaker 6: always gone through the last two years of kind of
- 58:51Speaker 6: not getting over the hump with some of those games,
- 58:54Speaker 6: it's awesome. And yet it's through six games. You know,
- 58:58Speaker 6: there's a lot of ball to be played. You've got
- 59:00Speaker 6: to avoid the letdown emotionally, like a bunch of teams
- 59:03Speaker 6: had last week. And, but Hey, enjoy the journey. And
- 59:07Speaker 6: so far so great.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Speaker 2 0 to wait to bring it up, but you
- 59:11Speaker 3: just said, Hey, there's a lot of people focusing on
- 59:13Speaker 3: some elements of the end of the game. And look,
- 59:16Speaker 3: I made it very clear on the show yesterday, the
- 59:19Speaker 3: only correct way to feel about it, whether you think
- 59:22Speaker 3: it should have been a PI or there should have
- 59:24Speaker 3: been another play.
- 59:25Speaker 1: Cause there's a second left.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Like the big 12 referees said there should be The
- 59:29Speaker 3: outcome does not change. It's not going to change. You
- 59:32Speaker 3: can scream at the clouds all you want. BYU won
- 59:35Speaker 3: this football game, and that's how it's going to be
- 59:39Speaker 3: from now until AI kills us all. This one goes
- 59:43Speaker 3: down in the record books as a BYU win. If
- 59:48Speaker 3: you're a BYU football fan, that's all you have to
- 59:51Speaker 3: think about. That's all you have to... You go to
- 59:53Speaker 3: the office, and there's somebody who wants to tell you
- 59:55Speaker 3: you didn't get the win. You did get the win, but...
- 59:58Speaker 3: There was also like a statement from the big 12. Hey,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: there should have been another play. There's an entire contingent
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: of Notre Dame fans and a lot of Utah fans
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: that suddenly became Notre Dame fans that are like, you
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: didn't really win that game.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: There's, you know, there's still something up in the air here.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: How should BYU collectively be handling that?
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: I think they've handled it. Well, in class Taki did
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: a good job yesterday of saying what was pretty obvious
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: for me, which is that he rolled out that plate
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: took four seconds or more and like, come on, they
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: didn't start the clock on time. And obviously it ends
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: with one second. So it's like, listen, was it DPI?
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: Was there a second left? Was it that, that, that
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: in the end? Yeah. Was, was it a Like all
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: of this is besides the point. I know it's Tuesday,
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: the weekend after in two or three days, this will
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: not be a conversation that Ted and, and if, if
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: national voters didn't feel like BYU actually deserved to win
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: the game, they would not have ranked them as high
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: as they did. I think that was, Oh, they respected
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: the wind and they respect Notre Dame. They only dropped
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: two spots. And so I think it's all good. Like,
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: in the end, BYU wins the game. It's a little
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: different from Michigan because Michigan had to make one more play.
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: We don't know that Notre Dame would have scored on
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: that play. If they got a DPI and if there
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: was a second lap or whatever, anyway, BYU is number two,
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: that's all in though. They're six and oh, they beat
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: Notre Dame. Like it's awesome. We'll take it. And now
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: you got to avoid what has happened to several number
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: ones this year, Texas, Georgia, and others have avoid that
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: emotional letdown game is one of the top teams in
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: the country, again, everyone's best shot. UCF never played a team,
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: you know, number two in the country at home. And
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: so two time zone, the whole thing, BYU is on,
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: on they're on high alert. Like Kalani Sake has addressed
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: his team this week and said, we haven't done anything
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: like that was an awesome win, but we got to
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: stop reading the headlines. Let's let's buy into what they've
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: been doing successfully every week, which is being mature team
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: that handles their business week to week.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: If we go, since you're at basketball media days, if
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: we go back to football media days and we take
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: a poll and say, all right, is BYU going to
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: beat Notre Dame? I think half the people in the
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: building would have said, yeah, BYU can beat Notre Dame.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: And then if I said, can BYU beat Notre Dame
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: without offensive player of the year, LJ Martin available?
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Everybody says, absolutely not.
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: And yet they did.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: I mean, that, that is an element to this game
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: that really fascinates me because you're not supposed to be
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: able to do it without, he might be your overall
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: best player. He's certainly top three of your overall best players.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: And it wasn't even.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: Really part of the conversation because of how the rest
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: of the team played, how great the defense was, et cetera.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: But it feels, it's not like he's out for the season.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: He's going to be back at some point. So I
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: BYU beat Notre Dame without being full strength.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: It is crazy.
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: I mean, like after the game, people were not saying, well, yeah,
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: without LJ, even better. Like it was almost forgotten, which
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: is crazy. BYU outrushed Notre Dame in that game. They,
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: they were as physical or, or more physical as fast
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: or faster. Like it's incredible what BYU has become in
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: terms of talent and skill and execution and what they
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: do together. I think going into the game 24, seven
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: sports put out an article that said Notre Dame had,
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: I can't remember if it was 58 or 68, four
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: and five-star players.
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: We all has 12.
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: It's like what BYU is doing with that talent, you know,
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: and obviously everyone always wants more NIL, like where BYU
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: is right now is incredible. They're building on what they've
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: done the last few years. They've taken incremental steps to
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: right now they're in competition for national championship again, six
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: weeks He was in a great spot. And they're only
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: going to add to that with LJ Martin later, perhaps
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: Andrew Gentry later as well. They're trying to get Sione
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: Mola back. Isaiah Glasker coming back, by the way. I
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: know that he was cleared and he was going to play.
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: I did not have him playing and playing as well
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: as he did coming off the injury. That was incredible.
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: I think pro football network had him as the highest
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: graded linebacker last week. He had circled that game. He
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: had talked to me and he was kind of fired
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: up that they had opted out of the pop-tarts bowl
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: and he played like it. And so, yeah, no, LJ Martin,
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: no problem. Bear Bachmeier has his plan at a Heisman
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: trophy contending level right now, number six and odds. I mean,
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: it's all clicking, but got to keep it going.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Speaker 2 People get mad at me when I say this.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: I hinted at it being a possibility in the offseason.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: This game where Bear Bachmeier accounted for four touchdowns in
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: every possible way you can on offense. This this puts
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: him I don't think he's going to win the Heisman Trophy.
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: But it puts if he continues to play this way,
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: he's in New York because now you're. the quarterback on
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: a top two team in the country and a team
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: that is, I mean, and we'll talk about this here
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: in a second is probably college football playoff bound, barring
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: wheels completely falling off. I think that this performance against
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Notre Dame and continuity from here on out puts him
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: at least, in that conversation in a very serious way.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: I'm not talking about Vegas. I'm talking about the voters.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: I'm talking about the pundits in college football, paying attention
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: to a quarterback who wears number 47 and it's not
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: always pretty, but it just makes the plays necessary when
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: his team needs it.
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: And the better passing Tebow. I mean, Urban Meyer said
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: the other day, like he's his favorite player to watch
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: in college football right now, obviously loves the Tebow comp
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: of the Florida connection, but he's Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: And to get a vote, I think people misunderstand Heisman voting.
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: They don't vote for the top 10. They vote for
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: the top three. And then they go, these guys got
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: the most votes and there's a flurry of people sometimes
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: like Zach Wilson was, you know, a top 10 guy
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: in 2020, but it's, it's, you're exactly right. Like he's,
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: is he going to win it? I mean, if BYU
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: goes undefeated and they're number one at the end of
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: the year, like he's got a chance, you know, after
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: the championship, Listen, if he's, if he's a top five
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: Heisman guy, that would be incredible. I mean, top 10
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: is incredible. Just what he's doing to make plays is awesome.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: And frankly, two weeks ago, a lot of people had
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: kind of questioned him and, and they didn't understand BYU
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: just does what it needs to do to win each game.
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: Sometimes that requires a bear to do X. Sometimes it's Y.
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: First couple of weeks, they didn't need him to do
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: a bunch. He's sitting out second half because they're beating
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: Utah tech and CSU. TCU has a very good defense
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: as we've seen. And the ball is wet, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: You know, sub one 30 total yards, whatever. They don't
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: really care. But then the last two weeks, what has
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: it required? No LJ Martin. Therefore bear has to raise
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: his game from a to a plus, right. And maybe higher.
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: So he goes, 300, 100 third view a quarterback to
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: ever do that. And then last week, as you mentioned
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: the past, the rush and the reception against the top
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: five team, those TVs, no one's done that in the
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: last 30 years in FPS quarterback. That's crazy. So it
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: keeps checking these massive boxes. And as he said in
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: his comments after the game, there was a lot of
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: kind of pent-up emotion. And he said, hey, I wasn't
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: going to lose to those guys. And he took it
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: out on Notre Dame to the benefit of BYU.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: Which, by the way, I think makes him even more
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: of a candidate because it's a storyline and college football
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: loves that little bit of a soap opera on top
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: of the on-field accomplishments. After he said that Notre Dame
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: disrespected the Bachmeier family, everyone decided to become an internet
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: sleuth and go digging as to what he meant. And
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: they kind of decided everyone decided that it was because
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: they used him as leverage to get another quarterback to commit.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: And then that commit ended up going to Auburn anyway.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: So it was kind of a wasted effort for Notre Dame. And,
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: and then that was the thing that he was salty about.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: Is that accurate to your knowledge? Is that the reason
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: that he holds a grudge against Notre Dame?
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: Yes. All the reporting and conversations I've had are, yeah, that's,
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: that's accurate. And it was funny last week, Stanford, Steve,
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: you know, I was talking to the media on Friday
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: before game day and he goes, Hey, I got, I
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: got some beef with BYU. They took Taysom Hill and
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: now bear Bachmeier. And I would add, Hey, LJ Martin
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: was a commit to Stanford too. So it was Newsy
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: town white pale. I mean, there have been several LJ
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: Martin was actually going to Stanford and 22 BYU Cardinal.
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: The next day, David Shaw says, Hey, I'm done. LJD
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: commits comes to BYU. The rest is history. I mean,
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: Stanford is the gift that keeps on giving to BYU
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: right now with football. And, and Hey, we really appreciate it.
- 1:08:32Speaker 6: Cause that battery of Bachmeier and Martin's pretty, pretty stinking good. Nice.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: Jerem Jordan is our guest here talking BYU Cougars red
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: and blue. We do it once a week here on
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: the Sean O'Connell show brought to you by Murdoch Ford,
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: Santa Quinn. You already alluded to this several times. Now
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: you got to go on the road. You got to
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: put the Notre Dame win out of your mind. You
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: got to go execute against a UCF team that you
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: absolutely should beat. You've got an Arizona State team the
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: following week, a Halloween game against them. You absolutely should
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: win that one, I think, handily. You've got the rivalry
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: game looming. Utah is a top-ten team for now. We'll
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: see what happens with them, and they've got Houston this week.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: This doesn't seem to me to be a BYU team
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: where Kalani Satake, even though he is doing it, really
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: has to remind these guys, like, hey, you haven't accomplished
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: enough yet.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Hey, you haven't really done anything yet.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: But how do they avoid the pitfalls of a potential
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: letdown win after beating Notre Dame on the road in Florida?
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: Speaker 3 0 Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: I think you're right.
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: I think they are mature enough to overcome this, but
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: not everyone is the same level of maturity. So I
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: think it's important to make sure with the whole team,
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: you kind of dig into them a little bit every
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: now and then you need like the most powerful emotion
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: to me is love.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: The second is fear.
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: I think a little bit of fear, love and fear
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: needs to be put into every one of these guys
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: to make sure they're ready. don't turn it over a bunch. Obviously,
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: you know, giving Notre Dame some special teams gaffes with
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: the muffed punt and the fake punt, like the BYU
- 1:10:02Speaker 6: defense made up for that and only allowed six. And
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: obviously they got two stops inside the five that ended
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: each half.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: That was.
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: Can really prevent anything like this where, you know, BYU
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: offense doesn't have to score a ton, a ton. And
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: they jumped out quickly last week. If you give a
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: team some hope and they're in the game in the
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: second half and you turn the ball over, that's where
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: it can get weird. But you know, I anticipate BYU
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: winning handily, but I'm, I'm just way aware. I'm just
- 1:10:29Speaker 6: BYU is awesome. Don't get me wrong, but they're not
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: so good. they can just show up and win. Right.
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: You look around and you go, wait, is BYU better
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: than into emotionally and mature Texas, Georgia, and so on
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: and so forth. The other number one's like you college football.
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: There's a lot of talent, a lot of places, Orlando's talent, rich,
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: like BYU has got to be aware. And I think
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: they BYU struggled historically in Florida, although recently they've been
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: way better. They're not playing like, you know, top 20
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: teams anymore every time they go to Florida for a
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: bowl game. But yeah, UCF, it's a big game. It's
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: the next one. And when you're number two, you're getting
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: everybody's best shot because it could be a savior season
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: kind of game for every opponent. All right.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: We did some Utah superlatives because the Utes are also
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: halfway through their season. So who is BYU's current defensive
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: player of the year?
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: I would say Kate Uluwabe. He's been an instant impact guy.
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: He's in the backfield harassing CJ car, never got home
- 1:11:27Speaker 6: for a fact, but he flushed him out a couple
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: of times. And that was BYU. His hope was kind
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: of get him off platform just to touch. He's been
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: a great leader. He's, he's putting up the numbers. He
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: he's a typical BYU guy. Like you, I has not
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: thought like, Hey, we really miss Jack Kelly. Although we
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: love Jack, like his Kate has been there. And so yeah,
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: same thing like legend, Glasgow and Kyler Casper with, with
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: chase Robertson, Parker Kingston, you miss those guys, but you go, man,
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: the production's still there. So I would say Katie, okay.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Well, he also qualifies for this other one that the
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: newcomer of the year. Is he that, or is that.
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: Probably, but I'll, I'll add someone else. I'll say Pocky Fino.
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: That BYU offense is rocking and rolling and you don't
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: notice the whole line. Like you could say Bruce Mitchell
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: at center, but Pocky Fino came from Washington where he
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: played mostly guard. He's been locking down left tackle, which
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: we know is one of the most important positions in football,
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: especially on offense. He's, he's one of the best legend.
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: Glasgow's been dynamic. You know, I've, I've loved that. Like
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: there's been a lot of dudes that have Walker lions,
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: obviously with the game winning catch, there's been a lot
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: of dudes that have come in and BYU was very
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: pinpoint with their transfers. It wasn't just a big group.
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: It was like, this guy's going to fit into this spot. Precisely.
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: You already did a great job in recruiting in the portal.
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: Speaker 0 7, Kalani is out because he's, you know,
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: he's going to be the coach of the year candidate.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: If BYU continues this success, but of his assistants, who
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: is the coach of the year so far for BYU?
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: Speaker 3 I mean, you could argue Aaron Roderick was
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: in his bag, especially Saturday in a big game. I'll
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: probably say Kelly Papanga because there was a big question.
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: Jay Hill goes to Michigan. The defense has been awesome.
- 1:13:07Speaker 6: That kind of turned this program, frankly, defense became kind
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: of top 15, top 20 that made it. So the offense,
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: you know, could kind of do its thing and not
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: have to outscore everybody by a bunch. even better. You know,
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: in terms of like yards allowed points allowed at this point,
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: they're not taking the ball away as much as they
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: did last year, although they're still positive in margin. So
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: the K-pop demon hunters continue to do their thing.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: What about the question mark of the year? There's head scratcher,
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: like the, where is this guy? We come into seasons
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: with expectations and, you know, for Utah, there was a
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: couple of individuals we thought would be, you know, taking
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: a big role in either the offense or the defense.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: And they just haven't. Is there a guy or two
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: at BYU that fits that category?
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: Speaker 4 0 You know, I don't know that there's
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: kind of a head scratcher guy. I thought Roger Sally
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: probably would be a little more involved. They try and
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: get him some, some receptions. These can, they target him.
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: He's going to have been a good blocker, but there's
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: been some injuries and certainly took some people out of
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: certain moments. Like I thought would have a big influence
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: on the year. You know, LJ Martin being out like
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: LJ is in, I think he's one of the top
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: running backs in the country. I think he still is,
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: but Yeah. Defensively, you always made up for some injuries
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: and whatnot. I think bottom will, the towel has done
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: a great job of right tackle starting Notre Dame, which
- 1:14:32Speaker 6: by the way, he got engaged over the weekend. That's
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: a congratulations, Tim.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: I don't know if there's a guy that like, Hey,
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: we're still waiting for you to show up kind of guy. No,
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: none of this. .
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: .
- 1:14:45Speaker 10: .
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: Pat McAfee reading passages from
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: the Book of Mormon on national television. How is that
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: being received? There's a way you can do that, and
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: people are going to like it. There's a way you
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: can do it, and they're going to think that it's
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: sacrilege and that you're mocking the religion. I am not
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: a member of the predominant faith here in the state.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: I thought that was a huge moment, though, and it
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: drove home why BYU Athletics is is very much a
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: missionary tool and a vehicle for exposure for the church overall,
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: but I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: So how is that being received among the grander populace?
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: I thought it was awesome.
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: I really do. And you come to find out he
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: didn't actually go up there prepared to do so. So
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: there was a video of some students who, and Pat
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: talked about it yesterday on the show, that kind of
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: threw the small Book of Mormon, as he called it,
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: a baby Book of Mormon, that hit his ankle. And
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: he turned and looked at it, and the crowd cheered.
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: And he's like, oh, should I open this up and
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: read it? And they cheered again. This is like during
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: a break. Then he's looking through it. He sees some
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: highlighted passages. He picks one. And then he chose to
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: read two different ones later, just like randomly. And the
- 1:16:07Speaker 6: crowd really reacted like, this is awesome. Honestly, I thought
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: it was a great day. You know, the Book of
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: Mormon was trending on Twitter and just like created some
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: interest in like, what is this? You know, so I
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: thought it was great overall. The church was replying to
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: people about it, you know, and on Instagram and Twitter
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: and whatnot. So I thought it was awesome. Like it
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: was just a positive day of exposure. And he did
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: a good job of, he said, I try and lean
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: into and learn about that school and what they're about.
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: And obviously the church's connection is a big.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Part of it.
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: I actually told Austin Colley, um, Saturday, cause he came
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: over to where I said, I said, little did you
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: and Ryan Smith know that like your relationship with Pat would,
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: would yield this beautiful fruit that we're seeing today of
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: just like positive exposure, whether you believe in it or not,
- 1:16:49Speaker 6: or like it or not, just to be like, Hey,
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: this is something that we, uh, we care about. And, uh,
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: here it is for the world to see. I thought
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: it was a cool moment.
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: So can we put to bed the idea And I
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: think it's an idea that's only held by a very
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: small but vocal portion of the populace that yells at
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: me every time that I bring up the idea that
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: maybe somebody at church headquarters doesn't want Kalani Satake to
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: go somewhere else. Every time I suggest something like that.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: I get responses like, you don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: They have bigger fish to fry. They're not paying attention
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: to football. And I know that's not true. I have
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: firsthand accounts from a member of the 70 who's like, no,
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: they talk about it in the office because they're BYU
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: fans also. There were six apostles at the game, I
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: was told. Can we put to bed the idea that
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: the church doesn't care about the sports?
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I believe they care. I believe it's important. I
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: believe it's a missionary tool. You know, I speak for
- 1:17:48Speaker 6: just myself, not athletics for the university. But yeah, like
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: BYU is very relevant right now. The church is more
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: relevant right now. Like when missionaries show up this week
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: in different houses around the country in the U.S., people
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: know they beat Notre Dame. It's like a talking point.
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: Jimmer for that success was very relevant. Tyler Haas told
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: me a story one time. that he was on his
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: mission in the Philippines. And the guy saw him as
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: an American and said, Oh, do you know Jim or Fredette?
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: And he's like, little, do you know? I was just
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: like literally about like three to 50 million Americans. You
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: found me.
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: Crazy story. You know what I mean? And, and it's,
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: it's all, it's all positive, you know? And it's fun
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: to see like former BYU athletes who are, 70s and
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: giving conference talks like Vice Sikahema and Gabe Reed, excuse me,
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: Elder Sikahema, Elder Reed, Brother Reed, right? A Brother Pat,
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: Elder Saban, which is really funny. I think it was
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: just a really positive, great weekend for all of that.
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: And as President Shane Reese at BYU has said, we
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: have to win to be relevant. And so there's a
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: certain amount of physical, emotional, financial investment that comes with that.
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: And right now, things are going really well.
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: I could have told you guys this many years ago.
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: All BYU needed to get over the hump and get
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: more positive exposure is have a Catholic quarterback, and then
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: you're good.
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: Listen, that's, that's like when the bell said with a
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: miracle bowl, he goes, listen, a Catholic through to a
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: Methodist for the hail Mary. And then a Mormon kicked
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: the PAT, you know, the Mormon won the game in
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: LaBelle's way. That was really funny. It, it is cool
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: because that not only is it, you know, bears, bears Catholic.
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: And by the way, I talked to bears dad over
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: the weekend, like how much did they like Notre Dame
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: and embrace that when Michael Bachmeier bears a Notre Dame is,
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: you know, a place and I, and like, I love
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: Notre Dame. Like I respect the heck out of Notre Dame.
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: If I had a chance to go to Notre Dame,
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: I might've gone there too. Like what, what a great
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: place we've seen. tail, Chris Badger, you know, from Tempe
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: a couple of years ago and others, there have been
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: members who have embraced that and said their experience was
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: so awesome. Likewise, the BYU, you have the Bachmeier's and
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: other like Trey Alexander, not a member of the church
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: from Georgia. You know, it's Ben Crittle would say double minority.
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: And he loves BYU. He loves the honor code. So
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: it's just, it's just great. It's, it's, it's representative of
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: people of faith. do they have to be the faith?
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: Not necessarily like come and ball and, and avoid certain
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: distractions from the typical college life, be about, be about
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: the game and, and represent and enjoy. And there's been
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: an awesome representative of a bunch of places like BYU
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: in the church. I.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: I, I, I was laughing because as someone who is
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: a Mormon adjacent, as I like to call myself, I
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: often find myself answering questions about the, you know, LDS
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: culture and about Mormonism to people who have no idea,
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: because I know a lot about it without being a member.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: I'm married to someone who is right. And so like,
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: I know it without being it. And I never in
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: a trillion years would have thought I would see Pat
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: McAfee sitting on, not at college game day, but sitting
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: on his own set on his own show, after being
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: in Provo and doing the same thing where like other
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: people who don't know as much as Pat knows, which
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: is wild that Pat knows anything. We're asking him questions
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: and he was like, no, it's not John Smith. It's
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: Joseph Smith. I was just, I was cracking up.
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: Because he was like, Nope, then Brigham Young. Then they moved.
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: Like he knew the history. I love that. He's like,
- 1:21:36Speaker 6: like in Ted Lasso, he talks about like be curious.
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: I think that's a great life principle. Like learn other things,
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: learn from other people in other ways. You I love
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: his curiosity.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: It was really, it was just really fascinating.
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: And it's like the Venn diagram that, that you're just
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: like a sports guy who then gets sucked into the,
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: the BYU thing and the Mormon thing. I never thought
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: it happened at that level, but it did. I, I
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: joked with, you know, a Steve Bonta, who we still
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: talk to AJ's dad. Like I call him elder D
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: Bonta because he fields questions like.
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: Out there. It's he said it's coffee and certain teas,
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: you know? And I go, yeah, that's right. I haven't
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: made an AI version of a name tag for him,
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: you know, if he needs it. So BYU has done
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: an excellent job helping spread the word of what BYU
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: is about, what the church is about, whether they are
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: a member of said church or not, they have brought
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: in different people, influencers to experience BYU. You know, obviously
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: the show that is the game, the school, I think
- 1:22:52Speaker 6: BYU has done a tremendous job from a PR standpoint
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: of bringing people in to see what it's actually about.
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: And once you see it, you understand it way better.
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: Last thing before I let you go, This win for
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: the program is huge. This win for Kalani Satake makes him, like,
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: even more bulletproof down there in my mind. And obviously
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: we had an unpleasant storyline at the beginning of the
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: season that, you know, some disagreement, some discord, and a
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: changing of the organizational structure. Now you've beat Notre Dame
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: and you're the number two team in the country. It's
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: the highest ranking in forever for the school and all
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: these things. I mean, his status has to be elevated
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: even more by this win.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Is that accurate?
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: I think so. And he's been respected nationally, but it's like, what's,
- 1:23:40Speaker 6: you know, what's your best win? Like how good is BYU?
- 1:23:44Speaker 6: They've never, they've never been better in sort of the
- 1:23:46Speaker 6: more modern context of BYU football. And just to see
- 1:23:50Speaker 6: that battle with Notre Dame on that stage, like the
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: biggest stage, arguably BYU has ever been on, you know, Hey,
- 1:23:56Speaker 6: they won the Natty holiday. Well, the technology was not
- 1:23:58Speaker 6: the same. It's just different. You have game day and
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: Google nation delivered.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: It was awesome.
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: And then you're on ABC Saturday night football. You got
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: the number one crew with Fallon. Her street was super cool.
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: I worked with Holly, by the way, 20 years ago
- 1:24:11Speaker 6: on true blue is a BOS show. I was a student.
- 1:24:14Speaker 6: She was the host. I learned a ton from her.
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: It's great to see her again. It was just, it
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: was just awesome. There was a moment shown in 2019
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: where BYU was struggling at the start of that year
- 1:24:24Speaker 6: and they played Boise state in the middle of the year.
- 1:24:26Speaker 6: And there was this thought that if you didn't win
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: that game or kept losing that maybe they would let
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: go of Kalani like that. The seat would be hot.
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: BYU wins that game. And it's kind of not looked
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: back since they finished 2019 strong. 2020 was awesome. 21
- 1:24:40Speaker 6: was awesome. And they've 24, 25, 26. It has taken
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: off since that point. He just won his 90th game,
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: which in his sixth game of his 11th year, Gregor
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: Bell said, LaBelle did the same exact thing. 90th win
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: sixth game of his 11th year. I was like, are
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: you kidding me? He joked that he was going to
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: be the Polynesian, the Valley wanted to do that. He is,
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: he's the perfect guy. As I've said a million times
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: from BYU right now, completely aligned with BYU and the
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: church and BYU is winning and doing it the BYU way.
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: It's just a perfect match. And it's really fun to
- 1:25:12Speaker 6: watch right now.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: Speaker 1 0 Well, enjoy it until November 7th and
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: then don't enjoy it as much.
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: And then it's on like Donkey Kong. Yeah. I can't,
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: I can't wait to embrace in the press box. and
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: just have a great competition there. It's going to be fun,
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: but yeah, big game Saturday, Utah, Houston, excited to watch
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: it because Houston feels like a very good team. Utah
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: is awesome. So that's going to be a game that
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: feels like a potential play out of the big 12
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: championship game, not playing, but like a, are you out
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: with the tiebreakers?
- 1:25:45Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: It could get complicated, but it cool for the two schools.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: Yeah, going to be a weird one.
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: We'll talk about that next week, and we'll talk about
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: basketball next week. I could pick your brain longer, but
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: we're way over clock. So thanks for your time, Jerem.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: Enjoy basketball media days, and we'll chat next week.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: John, thanks for the time, man.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: That is Jerem Jordan. Red and blue brought to you
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: by our friends at Murdoch Ford, Santa Quinn. Gosh, you
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: have to say it begrudgingly as a Utah fan. BYU
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: is really good, and they are The number two ranked
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: team in the country right now coming off of one
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: of the biggest wins anywhere of the year. One of
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: the best games that has been played so far in
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: college football this year.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: They're the winners. Plenty left. Plenty season left. Plenty could
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: go right, could go wrong.
- 1:26:34Speaker 7: Oof.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: Juggernaut right now. All right, Daily Dump is next. It's
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:26:48Speaker 10: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:26:50Speaker 7: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:26:53Speaker 7: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:26:56Speaker 7: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:26:59Speaker 7: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM, brought to you by
- 1:27:04Speaker 7: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:27:07Speaker 7: with the duck.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Plumbing, heating, cooling, air conditioning, excavation, the truck with the
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: duck can handle it all.
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: Give them a call, tell them OC sent you, or
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: go to Valleyplumbing.com, make an appointment online.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Still tell them OC sent you. You just don't have
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: to pick up a phone in that case.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: All right. There are six undefeated teams left in college football.
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: One of those, and probably the most surprising of them,
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: is the UCLA Bruins. Going to be a lot harder
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: for them to stay undefeated, although their schedule is not
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: that bad moving forward. They have USC at the end
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: of the year, of course, in a crosstown rivalry game.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: That's certainly not an easy out for UCLA. They got, like,
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: Minnesota on the schedule, but they've already played some of
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: their tougher games. Still, Bob Chesney and company are going
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: to have to do whatever they can do next without
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Nico Iamaleava.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: He is out. He's having season-ending knee surgery. Nico.
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: obviously was a big part of NIL discussions and what
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: contracts actually look like because he went to Tennessee first
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: and then he wanted more money from Tennessee and he
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: hit the open market when Tennessee said no and would
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: not be held hostage. And he probably took the same
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: money or maybe even a little bit less to go
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: play at UCLA. And at first it looked like, oh man,
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: it's such a downgrade for you.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: You're not going to be, you're playing for UCLA. Now
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: you're not going to be competing consistently.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: For the same kind of stuff that you could potentially
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: be competing for at tennessee and i was one of
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: the people who said that and i was dead wrong
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: nico and ucla are a top 10 team in the
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: country right now they have a strong chance even without
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: him to finish in the conversation for a trip to
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: the big 10 championship game. And obviously the big 10
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: is probably going to send four teams.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: To the college football playoff.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: So UCLA might be one of them, but also I
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: don't know much about the backup situation at UCLA and
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: the committee, which will start to convene and meet and
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: talk about these things in the next couple of weeks here.
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: They're aware of injured quarterbacks. And we saw this with
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: Florida state when it was still a four team playoff where,
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: what was it? Uh, their quarterback got injured. Jordan Travis, Travis,
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: Travis got injured and they just, they were still undefeated.
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: And they, the committee was just like, ah, you can't
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: win without them. And they left him out of the
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: playoff because of it.
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: They, they, they went on to win the ACC championship
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: game without him. They didn't score very much in that game,
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: but they still won the game. And yet the committee said,
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: we don't believe you can win games. Um, and it
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: was 14 playoff back then. So they would, they probably
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: would have lost the first round. But anyway, yeah, that
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: was crazy. The other thing that's funny that I think
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: is a contradiction in that same vein is that they
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: still ranked Ole Miss as high as they ranked them
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: at the end of the season when Lane Kiffin wasn't
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: their coach. So not having an Ole Miss went on
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: to prove.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: That, hey, they belong. They got to the semifinals.
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: But On the one hand, they said, if you don't
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: have your starting quarterback, we don't believe you're near as
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: good a team, but if you don't have your head coach,
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: we believe you're exactly the same team, which is, I
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: don't know, two different committees, but still kind of crazy.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens with UCLA as they move forward,
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: but they will be without their starting quarterback, Nico Yamaleava.
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: And one other thing about this, the thing that helps
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: UCLA in this regard is that they're only halfway through
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: the season. Florida State, it hurt them that I think
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: they only had one game left. So they didn't have
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: time to prove that, hey, we can show you that
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: we are as good a team or close enough to
- 1:31:04Speaker 5: as good a team without our starting quarterback.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: UCLA gets that chance.
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: The reason that bugged me, and we don't need to
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: relitigate something that happened years ago, the reason that that
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: bugged me so badly is because your team earned an
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: undefeated season and that's such a special thing in college football.
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: They earned it with the quarterback being part of it,
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: not the quarterback being the only reason they were there.
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: And I have always thought about the, the playoff or
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: the bracket being a reward for what you've already done,
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: not a projection on what you're expected to do like that.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: That to me felt like, a completely backwards analysis by
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: a committee that was like, Hey, we don't think our
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: prediction is that you will not be good. Well, I
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: don't care what your prediction is because what you should
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: be basing playoff selection on is, is what we have
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: already accomplished, what we have already done, what we have earned.
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: That was annoying back then. It would be annoying now.
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: And I think, hopefully, we've learned from it, and obviously
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: an expanded format makes a big difference. It is, for UCLA,
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: they've got Michigan State, Nevada, which is weird that they
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: have a non-conference game still, on.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: The road at Minnesota. They've got Illinois. They're on the
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: road at Michigan.
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: Which at one point was probably considered to be a
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: much more dangerous game than it is now. And then
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: they finish against USC. So Minnesota's decent. Michigan is decent.
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: USC is pretty good, but you're not looking at like
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: a super killer slate for the UCLA Bruins. And they
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: might end up being the surprise team of college football
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: this year. If they can finish it out without their
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: starting quarterback, who's having season ending knee surgery. And maybe it,
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: As far as Michigan goes, maybe they're going to be
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: much better as it seems like they have moved on
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: from Bryce Underwood as the starting quarterback. They pulled him
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: mid-game and Tommy Carr looked much more effective in Jason
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: Beck's offense. It's not like they scored a bunch of
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: points still, but he just looked a lot more comfortable.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: The offense looked like it flowed more with him. So
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: maybe Michigan will be a lot better the second half
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: of the season.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: Raise Brewers is your World Series matchup. Game one is Friday.
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: First pitch at six. And you can hear it right
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: here on your home with the Major League Baseball postseason.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: I love this.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: I love a good two teams that major league baseball
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: certainly does not want to be in the world series.
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: Like they want Dodgers Yankees and they got pretty much
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: the opposite end of that.
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: Raise brewers pair of the sports books. Don't like it either.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: Raise brewers.
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: Doesn't even look cool. Like the uniform matchup is not good.
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: I mean, there's just, and, and Tropicana field is an
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: embarrassment to major league baseball. So that's, that sucks that, that, that,
- 1:34:05Speaker 5: Stadium is hosting games, but the Rays are a good team.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: I have no problem with the Rays being there. Milwaukee
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: is favored to beat Tampa Bay. And let's see, it
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: would be the first World Series championship for both teams.
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: The Brewers, I think their franchise technically has one as
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: the Milwaukee Braves, but I don't know that for sure.
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: That was my understanding. This would be maybe the first
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: as the Brewers. Okay, so it would be the first
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: as the Brewers. We have not had a World Series
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: where both teams are chasing their first championship since 1980.
- 1:34:47Speaker 5: This is the first time since 1980 that two teams
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: that have never won.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: At all before.
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: Who was the other one? I know that was the
- 1:34:56Speaker 5: year the Phillies won their first anyway. Don't know who
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: the AL team was in that.
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: I love this because I was a young child in
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: Minnesota at the time when the 1991 Minnesota twins won
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: the world series. If Tampa Bay is able to win
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: a title, it would tie the 1991 Minnesota twins for
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: the longest preseason underdog odds to win a world series.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: They were 80 to one, according to draft Kings at
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: the beginning of the season to race were.
- 1:35:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: So the Rays were 80 to one. So this was
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: according to preseason odds. This is the 14th most likely
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: team to win a world series versus the 22nd most
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: likely team to win a world series.
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: And the Brewers, I mean, this is a team that's
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: been good the last few years. They've been near the,
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: at or near the top of the national league at
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: the end of the regular season over the past few
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: years here this year, they were the best team in
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: the national league. So there, I mean, that being top 15,
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: you're like, maybe that felt a little high to people
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: who don't follow MLB that closely, but like the brewers
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: probably deserve to be higher than that preseason, the way
- 1:36:12Speaker 5: they played the last few years. And yeah, the rays
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: being in the twenties, like that, that's would be, it's
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: wild that they're in the world series and they were
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: at the top of the AL after the regular season
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: with those kinds of, with those kinds of odds, it'd
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: be even crazier if they finish off the deal here.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: Um, I'm not sure. We'll have to look this up.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: But I want to know if there's.
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: Any preseason at 80 to 1, if there's anybody who
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: threw down some serious money on the Rays to win
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: a World Series. So this ESPN article that says Brewers
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: and Rays carry sportsbook liability in the World Series, they
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: mention the Hard Rock Bet, which is a Florida-based sportsbook.
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: They.
- 1:36:56Speaker 5: They said about 22% of their betters and futures put
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: down money for the Rays to win the World Series,
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: which makes sense in Florida. So it would be really
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: bad for them, is what they said. They said it
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: would be bad for them. I'm saying really bad for
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: them if the Rays.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: End up finishing. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Casino. You might
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: actually lose for once. Guess who doesn't feel bad?
- 1:37:21Speaker 6: All of us.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: I think bet MGM, if I'm not mistaken in the article,
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: the Brewers would be the worst outcome for them from
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: the future's perspective. So, I mean, I don't care about
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: the liability. I'm kind of smiling that this World Series
- 1:37:38Speaker 5: carries some liability for sportsbooks.
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: If you place the preseason bet on BYU to make
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: a college football playoff, are you now allowed to cash
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: that bet if they do?
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: Given what, what can you collect? I mean, it depends.
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: Are you like bear Bachmeier of BYU fandom where you're
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: not a member of the church, but you're a fan
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: of BYU.
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: If you're, how's that going to be? How's that going
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: to be handled? Well, I think we'll cross that bridge
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: when we get to it.
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: Discreetly cash that bet.
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: You know how, like if you live in, if you
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: live in Brooklyn, uh, you can, there, there's like the
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: Orthodox Jewish population there.
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: That won't even touch a light switch on the Sabbath?
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Are you aware of this?
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: I am not aware of that. Okay, it's like, you know,
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: the Hasid, the Hasidic Jews? uh yeah yeah the very
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: strict observance typically they wear the full you know they
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: got the hat they have the the side curls all
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: that kind of stuff well i know this because i
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: read the chosen in elementary school or middle school shout
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: out to haim potok great book uh also my brother
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: lived in brooklyn for like four years and he would
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: There's a name for it. And we're both friends with
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Josh Newman, who's... And Jeff Schwartz, who's joining us on
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: the show soon. But he lived in Brooklyn, and he
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: played this role for people. There's a name for it
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: in Yiddish. I forget what the word is. But if
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: you're an Orthodox Jew, you're not allowed to turn on
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: the light switch on the Sabbath. You can't turn on
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: your crock pot. You can't plug in. You can't use electricity.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: But they do, there's a loophole because of course we
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: do this with everything. There's a loophole where you have
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: like your Catholic neighbor or your Christian neighbor or whatever,
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: come over and turn the lights on for you or
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: turn the lights off for you.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: Cause you're not allowed to touch it.
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: But, and so my brother would do that for people
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: in his building when he lived in crown Heights. And
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: that that's like, It's a thing. It's a loophole. He
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: was the light switch flipper. We might have to do
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: that for our BYU, our hardcore BYU fans that maybe
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: put some bets down.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: We cash the bets for them.
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: If you need someone to take that betting slip and
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: cash in for you, I will volunteer as tribute for
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: a small fee.
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: My name's still on the records, but I don't go
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: to church anymore. I'll do that for you.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: I've got to look up what the word is, because
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: now it's needling in my brain. I should know the
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: term for it. Anyway, that's your daily dump brought to
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: you by Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling. Uh, give them
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: a call, look for the truck with the duck. And
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: while you're at it with the home improvement stuff, now's
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: the time people, it is a beautiful day here in
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: salt Lake city, unseasonably warm perhaps, but we know the
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: cold is coming. And you might have a situation like today,
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: the air conditioner is on. Tonight, you're going to need
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: the heater to be on. Your home, your furnace, your
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: air conditioner, they don't know what to do with this.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: An energy-efficient home allows you to have a lot less
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: of that going on. The temperature swings to not be
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: so crazy, to not be so wild. And one of
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: the best ways to make your home more energy-efficient is
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: to get top-quality replacement windows. Advanced Window Products, advancedwindows.com. has

- 1:42:33Speaker 3: football expert, our betting expert. Talk all things NFL and
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: college football.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: My good friend, Jeff Schwartz. Welcome back to the show,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz. How are you?
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: Good. How are you?
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Doing all right. It's a big week.
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: It was a big weekend in football here in the
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: state of Utah college football. And obviously another big one
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: coming is Utah welcomes Houston for college game day, who
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: was here in Provo last week for BYU versus Notre Dame. I,
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: I don't know if I'm being superstitious or what my
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: problem is. I actually kind of hate that after their
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: worst performance of the year against Colorado, where Utah barely
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: escaped with the victory. Now you've got a ranked Houston
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: team coming in and all the fanfare of college game
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: day and stuff.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: Am I being a baby about this?
- 1:43:22Speaker 8: You're just a little stitious?
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: Maybe not super, but just a little stitious.
- 1:43:28Speaker 8: I think I mean a baby. You mean a baby. Oh,
- 1:43:32Speaker 8: this is good for your program, right? In this situation,
- 1:43:34Speaker 8: I don't think you thought you would be it, right?
- 1:43:37Speaker 8: College game day for a Houston game? As good as
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: you thought maybe this year was go, this feels like
- 1:43:41Speaker 8: something that just you're pretty excited to be in this
- 1:43:44Speaker 8: spot where you're able to celebrate your team and your program.
- 1:43:47Speaker 8: You're one of Morgan Scali. I know the attention you
- 1:43:51Speaker 8: might not love in this situation, but that's just good
- 1:43:55Speaker 8: for the program. It means you're going in the right direction,
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: and it's a good opportunity to sell the program to
- 1:44:00Speaker 8: the masses who might not be watching Utah football so far.
- 1:44:02Speaker 8: You've had very few national TV games if they have been.
- 1:44:06Speaker 8: They've been late, right? Late in the East Coast, this
- 1:44:07Speaker 8: opportunity to sell your program to a wide audience.
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: When you have that stinker of a game, is that
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: kind of a necessary right of passage for any team? Good, bad, indifferent,
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: where like, you're going to have to have one that
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: you just don't play. Well, you don't show up the
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: way you're supposed to show up. You're not as physical
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: as you're supposed to be. The coaches are off with
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: their play calling, whatever it is. And to survive that,
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: it means like you're, you're probably better off.
- 1:44:34Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: Like every team, it seems like has one or two
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: of these and Utah had one and they somehow came
- 1:44:40Speaker 3: away without losing it.
- 1:44:42Speaker 8: Well, you'd rather win them than lose them.
- 1:44:44Speaker 6: Of course.
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: I'll tell you that. I mean, this felt like a
- 1:44:48Speaker 8: classic spot where Colorado's off a bye, right? And they've
- 1:44:52Speaker 8: heard for weeks now how bad they are and how
- 1:44:56Speaker 8: poorly they're playing. Utah has a big home game next week,
- 1:45:01Speaker 8: the week after you play Colorado. This had all the
- 1:45:05Speaker 8: fixings of a trap game, even though you guys got,
- 1:45:08Speaker 8: I think it was Europe 13-0, right?
- 1:45:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:45:10Speaker 8: Um, and just, you know, and I think this is
- 1:45:12Speaker 8: two weeks in a row, the second half defense just
- 1:45:14Speaker 8: wasn't as good as the first half defense. I think
- 1:45:16Speaker 8: that's a, something to look into as you head into
- 1:45:19Speaker 8: playing Houston here. But I mean, you know, stinkers are
- 1:45:23Speaker 8: part of the sport. Uh, they, they tend to happen
- 1:45:26Speaker 8: before big games. So to me, it's not like that
- 1:45:28Speaker 8: big of a deal, but this feels like a pretty
- 1:45:30Speaker 8: normal thing to happen for college football is you have
- 1:45:33Speaker 8: the stinker right before, but the biggest game you played
- 1:45:36Speaker 8: all season. And so that, that, you won, you know,
- 1:45:38Speaker 8: like that's in the end, you end up with a victory,
- 1:45:41Speaker 8: which is the goal anyway. So I wouldn't put much
- 1:45:43Speaker 8: stock into it. If the same things that sort of
- 1:45:45Speaker 8: plagued you in that game start happening in other games,
- 1:45:48Speaker 8: I'd maybe worry about it more, but I wouldn't worry
- 1:45:50Speaker 8: about it. Now, I mean, the second half defense, I think,
- 1:45:52Speaker 8: is two weeks in a row now. It's a little concerning, right?
- 1:45:56Speaker 8: The points and yards given up, but you'll know much
- 1:45:59Speaker 8: more about your team when you play a good Houston
- 1:46:00Speaker 8: team this weekend.
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: When you're not getting, and Morgan Scali has been kind
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: of trying to talk us off this ledge, and Colton Swan,
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: the defensive coordinator, has been trying to talk us off
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: this ledge, but it seems like, and you just mentioned
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: the third quarter defense, and it's been every third quarter,
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: and it's plagued the second half a couple of times,
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: the whole second half a couple of times.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: There is a.
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: Seeming disconnect between The quality of the man coverage in
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: the pass rush that makes it so they only have
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: to cover their man for three and a half seconds.
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: And there was, you know, Morgan scaling his press conference
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: yesterday said, it's not as simple as you guys think
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: quarterbacks are getting the ball out quickly. And that's part
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: of what the problem is here. Our pass rush is fine.
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: It doesn't look like it's fine. You got no sacks
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: from the defensive end. You had no real pressure against
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: Colorado last week. Mobile quarterbacks are obviously able to extend
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: it even longer, and then you're just not able to cover.
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: Even really great DBs can't cover for five and a
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: half seconds. Do you have to change things up if
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: you're not getting the right amount of pressure? Do you
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: have to then start to change your defensive scheme and
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: go away from some of that man?
- 1:47:11Speaker 8: Yes. So, look, the pairing of these together basically is
- 1:47:17Speaker 8: that if you play man coverage, you're a little stickier
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: to start with. to down, right? And if you're a
- 1:47:24Speaker 8: little stickier to start to down, that allows your pass
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: rush potentially to get home, right? That's sort of like
- 1:47:30Speaker 8: the genesis of that together, right? And then the longer
- 1:47:34Speaker 8: that you're in man coverage without getting the quarterback, the
- 1:47:38Speaker 8: tougher it is to continue to play man coverage, right?
- 1:47:40Speaker 8: So you sort of tie those two together. And so, yes,
- 1:47:43Speaker 8: if you're not getting quick pressure, Sean, then it really
- 1:47:45Speaker 8: negates the point of playing man coverage, right? And so...
- 1:47:50Speaker 8: you would think you would have to change things up
- 1:47:53Speaker 8: and sort of maybe play some zone coverage if you
- 1:47:55Speaker 8: can't get home on the quarterback. But the thing that
- 1:47:59Speaker 8: I always struggle with with these guys is Oregon's, over
- 1:48:01Speaker 8: the years, played a ton of man coverage, and they've
- 1:48:02Speaker 8: gone away from that a little bit as they've been
- 1:48:04Speaker 8: gassed over the years, playing so much man coverage, is
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: that if you coach man coverage all year, and then
- 1:48:13Speaker 8: it's like, actually, never mind, we're playing zone now, yeah
- 1:48:17Speaker 8: like that's hard to just play zone like but they
- 1:48:20Speaker 8: always play man what do you want them to do
- 1:48:23Speaker 8: like that's not what they do um so i think
- 1:48:26Speaker 8: it's like easier said than done like it's easy to
- 1:48:29Speaker 8: just do something different but if that's all what you
- 1:48:32Speaker 8: do and organ over the years has moved to play
- 1:48:35Speaker 8: more too high um it's it's helped out the defense
- 1:48:37Speaker 8: a lot but That took two years to do, right?
- 1:48:42Speaker 8: And so if you're a man coverage team, you're probably
- 1:48:45Speaker 8: going to play man the entire year, and then you'll
- 1:48:48Speaker 8: switch over in the offseason. Or maybe you can make
- 1:48:50Speaker 8: the mix over by a couple weeks and whatnot. You
- 1:48:52Speaker 8: mix it in. But you also don't want to end
- 1:48:54Speaker 8: up with blown coverages, right? You do hope your pass
- 1:48:56Speaker 8: rush does get home eventually, right? So you don't want
- 1:48:58Speaker 8: to give up on that altogether. But it's just hard
- 1:49:01Speaker 8: to decide to wholesale scheme change things in the middle
- 1:49:04Speaker 8: of a season, right?
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how they
- 1:49:08Speaker 3: handle it. There's also, right, where you just manufacture the pressure.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: You bring blitzes.
- 1:49:13Speaker 8: A lot of times when you blitz, you play zone
- 1:49:15Speaker 8: behind it, though. Again, if you're not doing a ton
- 1:49:19Speaker 8: of zone coverage, you're not often going to man pressure
- 1:49:22Speaker 8: unless it's like a zero pressure.
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: We'll see how they adjust because you've got to find
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: a way to make it harder on Connor Wegman than
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: you made it on Isaac Wilson.
- 1:49:31Speaker 8: He seems good on offense. Their defense is not great,
- 1:49:34Speaker 8: but their offense is, you know, I think he had
- 1:49:38Speaker 8: five touchdown passes and added like 50 yards rushing too.
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a good player, and he's going to be
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: able to adjust to, you know, whatever you're trying to hide,
- 1:49:48Speaker 3: whatever you're showing and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:49:50Speaker 8: How do you feel about the game?
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: I'm nervous for this game.
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: Uh, not because I think what we saw from Utah
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: against Colorado is who they really are, but they haven't
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: played a winning team yet.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:50:03Speaker 3: And now, so I think that the step up is
- 1:50:05Speaker 3: very significant. Uh, and you do it on a national
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: stage where, you know, you're highlighted game, although they still
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: kept it late at night, which is somewhat laughable.
- 1:50:15Speaker 8: Um, Oh, it's a late game again. Yeah. Like 10, 15, 10, 15,
- 1:50:19Speaker 8: your time.
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50:22Speaker 8: Dude, this weekend, Oregon played 11, right? And I did
- 1:50:26Speaker 8: not stay awake. But I woke up to pee at
- 1:50:29Speaker 8: like 2.30. And I looked at my phone. It was
- 1:50:32Speaker 8: 14 now, like two minutes left. So I sat in
- 1:50:34Speaker 8: my bed and watched the phone. I watched the game.
- 1:50:37Speaker 8: It sounded like the best part of our game. All
- 1:50:39Speaker 8: the Oregon fans were like jealous of me that I
- 1:50:41Speaker 8: skipped the terrible part of the football game and watched
- 1:50:43Speaker 8: the last two minutes, which was the only good part.
- 1:50:44Speaker 8: We played the whole game. I got lucky.
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: I think I fell asleep right before we actually got
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: a resolution on that game.
- 1:50:52Speaker 8: It was late. It didn't end until 2.45 Eastern. That's insane.
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: That's pretty ridiculous, honestly.
- 1:51:05Speaker 8: It's not. I mean, it's like, and I saw Oregon
- 1:51:09Speaker 8: got like, no, it was not ranked the top 25.
- 1:51:11Speaker 8: I'm not sure we totally deserve it, but how many
- 1:51:14Speaker 8: voters were awake at 2.45 watching the end of the
- 1:51:16Speaker 8: game before they submitted their ballots for the week?
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody.
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: Nobody.
- 1:51:19Speaker 6: Nobody.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Uh, BYU was able to beat Notre Dame.
- 1:51:24Speaker 8: Yeah. Shocking. Shock. I was shocked. Okay.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: Um, what is the correct football outcome for that final
- 1:51:32Speaker 3: play where there was an extra second, but they didn't
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: realize that till after the fact, uh, there was a
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: lot of contact on the coverage. A lot of folks
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: thought the, you know, the rules officials and the rules
- 1:51:45Speaker 3: expert were just like, yeah, that's past interference. Kirk herb street.
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: It's out on the broadcast. That's past interference. Uh, Or,
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: of course, the third option is no. Like, you let
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: them play it out down at that end of the field,
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: and Notre Dame didn't deserve an extra play, and they
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: didn't make the play they needed to, so BYU wins.
- 1:52:02Speaker 3: What is the objective correct football outcome for that scenario?
- 1:52:07Speaker 8: Well, use something that I think is kind of silly, though.
- 1:52:09Speaker 8: You just said that Notre Dame doesn't deserve one more second. No,
- 1:52:13Speaker 8: there was one second left on the clock. We can
- 1:52:16Speaker 8: debate pass interference, holding, like some of these, like, you know,
- 1:52:20Speaker 8: calls that are just subjective, right? Human opinion, right? Did
- 1:52:24Speaker 8: it happen? Did it not happen? I saw with my
- 1:52:26Speaker 8: eyes this. We debate those all day, Sean. Was it
- 1:52:29Speaker 8: pass interference? Probably. Do they call a lot of times
- 1:52:32Speaker 8: in a situation at a game? No, but I think
- 1:52:35Speaker 8: if they would have called it, you would have been like, okay,
- 1:52:37Speaker 8: I see the pass interference. You can't mess up the clock, man.
- 1:52:40Speaker 8: There was one second left. If you have to call
- 1:52:45Speaker 8: the National Guard to take the people off the field,
- 1:52:47Speaker 8: take the people off the field. I saw someone claim
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: that they think Steve Young ran the field first because
- 1:52:54Speaker 8: he knew there was a second left. He wanted there
- 1:52:56Speaker 8: to be a big mob on the field to not
- 1:52:58Speaker 8: have that happen. But there was a second left. You
- 1:53:02Speaker 8: have to administer that correctly. We cannot have procedural issues.
- 1:53:08Speaker 8: We've talked about this for years with the Pac-12. I
- 1:53:12Speaker 8: had the same take for years now. You cannot have
- 1:53:16Speaker 8: procedural issues like this in college football. Again, opinions on
- 1:53:21Speaker 8: holding pass interference, fine. I think it's a holding. Whatever, man.
- 1:53:25Speaker 8: But you can't mess this up, man. You just can't
- 1:53:28Speaker 8: mess this up. There was a second left. No one's
- 1:53:30Speaker 8: even arguing there wasn't. Everyone's like, yeah, there was a
- 1:53:32Speaker 8: second left. We just didn't. The game ended. To me,
- 1:53:36Speaker 8: you just can't make those errors, Sean. That's not acceptable.
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: The argument from the bluest of bluebloods down here in
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: Provo is that they delayed the start of the clock
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: to favor Notre Dame, and so... It actually, when you
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: play out.
- 1:53:52Speaker 7: Oh, boy.
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: When you let the game play, it actually took the
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: full four seconds or whatever when you put a stopwatch
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: next to it. But the thing is, we could debate it,
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: and there's no reason to.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: BYU won. The result in the record book is that
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: BYU won.
- 1:54:10Speaker 8: They played better than Notre Dame. They deserve to win,
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: but the fact is Notre Dame had one second left.
- 1:54:15Speaker 8: It doesn't mean that they scored in that play, but
- 1:54:18Speaker 8: There was a second left on the clock, and it
- 1:54:19Speaker 8: wasn't administered correctly, and that's unfortunate because you don't want
- 1:54:22Speaker 8: games to end with situations like this where you're like, hey,
- 1:54:27Speaker 8: there's one second left. What happened here?
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: Weird deal.
- 1:54:32Speaker 3: Did that win get BYU into the college football playoff?
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: Even if they lose to Utah, even if they don't
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: play in the Big 12 championship game, or they do
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: and they lose the Big 12 championship game, was that
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: enough to get BYU in most likely?
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:54:47Speaker 8: So we're saying 11-1, no Big Ten Championship, no Big
- 1:54:50Speaker 8: 12 Championship game, right? Yeah. Or like 10-2, no Big
- 1:54:55Speaker 8: 12 Championship, or obviously they play in the game at 11-1,
- 1:54:57Speaker 8: I think they're in no matter what.
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: Yeah, like 11-1 or 11-2, like you somehow play in
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: the Big 12 Championship game, but you lose it, yeah.
- 1:55:11Speaker 8: Yes, because who else is going to be in the
- 1:55:14Speaker 8: playoff right now? Like... You have Ohio State, maybe, right?
- 1:55:20Speaker 8: But now they have a quarterback injury, right? So that's
- 1:55:22Speaker 8: a maybe, right? You have, I think Indiana's probably in. Oregon,
- 1:55:28Speaker 8: unlikely unless they win out. It's kind of a bummer
- 1:55:31Speaker 8: because our defense is playing so good right now. USC,
- 1:55:34Speaker 8: I guess, but USC's got to sort of navigate Ohio State,
- 1:55:38Speaker 8: Indiana still. plus they have a couple other, you know,
- 1:55:41Speaker 8: they got the Bruins still. Dude, the Bruins are only
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: a three-point, I mean, a three-point favorite, excuse me, USC's
- 1:55:48Speaker 8: only a three-point favorite on the road to Wisconsin this weekend. Like,
- 1:55:50Speaker 8: there's no gimme this weekend for USC. ACC's got one team.
- 1:55:55Speaker 8: SEC's got Georgia, Bama probably, Ole Miss maybe. Like, there's
- 1:55:59Speaker 8: not a lot of teams, man. Like, who's going to
- 1:56:02Speaker 8: be in the, who's in?
- 1:56:04Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:56:05Speaker 8: I think the Big 12 is, have three possible spots
- 1:56:11Speaker 8: in the playoff at the moment.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw someone write an article making the case
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: for that, that you have BYU missing the game by
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: losing to Utah, Utah being in the game and losing it,
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: and then whoever wins the game being in it.
- 1:56:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:56:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:56:31Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe. Right?
- 1:56:33Speaker 8: That's certainly possible.
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: Yeah, looks like this is the last year we have
- 1:56:36Speaker 3: to make a 12-team debate to the pleasure of absolutely
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: nobody around college football. This came out Wednesday night, and
- 1:56:45Speaker 3: I didn't do a Thursday or Friday show last week
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: because I was in Chicago for the PFL, and I
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: was just yelling at the clouds about how dumb this is.
- 1:56:53Speaker 8: Just taking days off, I'm not surprised.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: Yes, that's right.
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: But I know you don't like it. Articulate for me
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: why this is not in the best interest of college football.
- 1:57:04Speaker 8: I just think that the goal of any tournament like
- 1:57:09Speaker 8: this is to pick a champion, right? To find a champion.
- 1:57:12Speaker 8: And I think that we have enough space available to
- 1:57:14Speaker 8: find a champion. And this just, to me, turns into
- 1:57:17Speaker 8: a participation tournament, right? Where we have eight and four
- 1:57:20Speaker 8: teams making... making a championship. And to me, that's just
- 1:57:24Speaker 8: a playoff, which is I get, Oh, the FCS does it. Okay.
- 1:57:27Speaker 8: Who cares? But they also, this is also schedules around this, right?
- 1:57:31Speaker 8: Like no one's going to change their scheduling and it's
- 1:57:33Speaker 8: going to, it's going to, it's going to guarantee that
- 1:57:36Speaker 8: we're going to have teams that just don't schedule hard
- 1:57:40Speaker 8: that know they're better than the rest of the teams
- 1:57:42Speaker 8: in their conference. And even if they lose two games
- 1:57:44Speaker 8: in the conference to go 10 and two or nine
- 1:57:46Speaker 8: and three, even they're going to be a playoff team, Sean, right? Like,
- 1:57:48Speaker 8: I don't know how this really makes the sport that
- 1:57:50Speaker 8: much better, but, You could argue, well, a team like Oregon, right?
- 1:57:53Speaker 8: Let's say we lost to Oklahoma State, we lose to
- 1:57:56Speaker 8: UCLA playing a third-string quarterback, and let's say we finish 9-3. Okay, well,
- 1:58:03Speaker 8: should they be a playoff team 9-3? That doesn't feel
- 1:58:05Speaker 8: like a season that we should be a playoff team with, right?
- 1:58:08Speaker 8: I just don't see the value in this. And then also, too,
- 1:58:12Speaker 8: what frustrates me is, so we decided to be greedy, right,
- 1:58:16Speaker 8: and do this. It's for the money. So why don't
- 1:58:20Speaker 8: we be all the way greedy and just make as
- 1:58:22Speaker 8: much money as possible and bid this out to all
- 1:58:24Speaker 8: the networks? They give it to ESPN.
- 1:58:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:58:26Speaker 8: Like, just be greedy. Just make as much money as possible.
- 1:58:30Speaker 8: And I just, I know people make the argument that
- 1:58:35Speaker 8: the World Series games won't matter as much. That's probably true.
- 1:58:40Speaker 8: It won't matter as much. They're still going to matter.
- 1:58:43Speaker 8: You won't feel the sting as a fan. Like, when
- 1:58:45Speaker 8: we lost Oklahoma State, I was like, here we go.
- 1:58:47Speaker 8: Season's over. And now I probably won't feel that way.
- 1:58:51Speaker 8: I'll just be like, oh, well, we lost one. We'll
- 1:58:54Speaker 8: be fine.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: Which I don't love.
- 1:58:59Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think that's good for college football to,
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: to not, I mean, part of the unique nature of
- 1:59:06Speaker 3: college football, part of the thing that separates it from
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: the NFL is that you, you have to care about
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: that week four matchup against a team you never thought
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: was going to be able to beat you. And, you know,
- 1:59:16Speaker 3: in the NFL, you could skip those because you, you
- 1:59:19Speaker 3: got four built-in losses every year before you have to
- 1:59:21Speaker 3: worry about it. And now like, If you're a big-time program,
- 1:59:26Speaker 3: if you're a famous program, you have three built-in losses
- 1:59:30Speaker 3: a year, probably?
- 1:59:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:59:32Speaker 8: Yeah, probably, yeah. Yeah, I mean, just... Is that what
- 1:59:37Speaker 8: you want? I mean, it's fine if that's what you want,
- 1:59:39Speaker 8: but I don't think the sport needs it. The sport,
- 1:59:42Speaker 8: what makes the sport so unique is obviously the urgency, right?
- 1:59:46Speaker 8: The sense of urgency and how important every game feels.
- 1:59:49Speaker 8: And while teams are going to win every game, of course,
- 1:59:52Speaker 8: it's not going to feel... every loss won't feel, it'll
- 1:59:55Speaker 8: feel like the NFL where your favorite team loses. And
- 1:59:57Speaker 8: you're like, okay, well get them next week. We, you know,
- 2:00:00Speaker 8: we're allowed six losses basically.
- 2:00:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:00:01Speaker 8: If you want to be a playoff team, most time
- 2:00:03Speaker 8: you can lose six games and be a playoff team
- 2:00:05Speaker 8: or seven games now with, uh, with a 17 game
- 2:00:08Speaker 8: schedule and you lose seven games and you're just like, okay, well,
- 2:00:12Speaker 8: all right. We lost, we lost again. Like we'll be fine.
- 2:00:15Speaker 8: College football, you know, clearly has never felt that way.
- 2:00:17Speaker 8: Now it's going to feel that way. And again, we're
- 2:00:18Speaker 8: not going to get any new champions. We're not going
- 2:00:21Speaker 8: to get a, you know, a dark horse winning a
- 2:00:25Speaker 8: championship because they're the 23 seed now. You know, it's
- 2:00:28Speaker 8: not going to happen. And then, too, I see these
- 2:00:31Speaker 8: things when we have these new playoff seedings. People put
- 2:00:34Speaker 8: out a list of, like, here's who would have made
- 2:00:37Speaker 8: the playoff in 2022, right? Let's just say random year. Guys,
- 2:00:42Speaker 8: we do realize that the committee is going to rank
- 2:00:45Speaker 8: teams differently knowing that all 24 are in, right? Like,
- 2:00:48Speaker 8: we get that, right? Like, they're going to pull a
- 2:00:50Speaker 8: little more care into who ranks 20th versus when you
- 2:00:52Speaker 8: have a 12 team playoff. And it probably doesn't matter
- 2:00:54Speaker 8: as much who ranks 20th or 22nd or 25th. Like
- 2:00:57Speaker 8: they're not going to let so many group of six
- 2:00:59Speaker 8: teams in. They're going to change. They're going to, the
- 2:01:01Speaker 8: rings will be different. Why, why, why do we not
- 2:01:03Speaker 8: get that? I don't get why people make this argument
- 2:01:04Speaker 8: of like, see in 2021, there would have been five
- 2:01:08Speaker 8: group of five teams in. Well, not, no, they would,
- 2:01:11Speaker 8: they would, they'd break them differently.
- 2:01:12Speaker 3: Uh, there was a bunch of top 10 teams, a
- 2:01:17Speaker 3: bunch of top 25 teams that lost this last weekend. Who,
- 2:01:22Speaker 3: whose loss hurt them the most? Whose loss took them
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: out of the college football playoff? Cause even with 12 teams, there's, there's,
- 2:01:27Speaker 3: you know, several of those squads, like Georgia's not out
- 2:01:30Speaker 3: of it because they lost one game. So who, who
- 2:01:33Speaker 3: eliminated themselves mid season with that loss in week seven?
- 2:01:37Speaker 8: Um, I mean, Texas feels like they're circling the drain.
- 2:01:40Speaker 8: Don't they? They do with their schedule still. Um, I
- 2:01:45Speaker 8: would probably say they did. Indiana should be fine. Ohio
- 2:01:51Speaker 8: State won but lost their quarterback. That's not a great
- 2:01:54Speaker 8: spot for them. I would probably say Texas is probably
- 2:01:57Speaker 8: the one who's in the most trouble.
- 2:02:01Speaker 3: I saw someone put up a big graphic about Texas
- 2:02:04Speaker 3: and the fact that Arch Manning was paid all this
- 2:02:08Speaker 3: money and he was the number one overall recruit and
- 2:02:10Speaker 3: so was Quinn Ewers and In both cases, they maybe
- 2:02:13Speaker 3: didn't get what they should have out of either of
- 2:02:16Speaker 3: those guys. And I don't know if Arch Manning ever
- 2:02:20Speaker 3: should have been the number one overall recruit. I don't
- 2:02:22Speaker 3: do the recruiting stuff. I don't do high school player evaluations. But,
- 2:02:26Speaker 3: you know, he's been good, not great. And obviously that's
- 2:02:30Speaker 3: different when you're at Texas, and it's a heck of
- 2:02:32Speaker 3: a lot different when there's Manning on the back of
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: your jersey. And, you know, Steve Sarkeesian in the span
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: of one week said, If his name was Joe Smith,
- 2:02:41Speaker 3: you'd be praising him, and then this week he said, yeah,
- 2:02:45Speaker 3: we're going to give the freshmen some more reps. So, like,
- 2:02:49Speaker 3: where do we actually stand on Arch Manning?
- 2:02:53Speaker 8: It just feels very mismanaged, doesn't it?
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:02:58Speaker 8: And, you know, the thing about Arch is, like, I've
- 2:03:02Speaker 8: said this for a while, you never just see, like,
- 2:03:05Speaker 8: a 60-minute game. Like, when's the last game you're like, man,
- 2:03:07Speaker 8: that's the Arch Manning game? Like, that's the game where
- 2:03:12Speaker 8: he showed he's in the top of the draft. Now,
- 2:03:14Speaker 8: a draft pick is different, you know, than where is
- 2:03:19Speaker 8: a college quarterback. Because, you know, in the draft, they
- 2:03:21Speaker 8: do a lot of trade drafting, right, Sean? So I
- 2:03:24Speaker 8: don't know what his NFL future is going to be.
- 2:03:25Speaker 8: I just know that Texas is not working. They're not,
- 2:03:29Speaker 8: you know, they're not completing enough passes down the field.
- 2:03:31Speaker 8: They're not using the weapons they have. The offense tries
- 2:03:33Speaker 8: out way too much. The offensive line is not really.
- 2:03:36Speaker 8: gone better. There's just not a lot of those wild
- 2:03:37Speaker 8: moments that Arch has, and the turnovers are brutal. So,
- 2:03:40Speaker 8: I don't know. I mean, look, the freshmen getting reps,
- 2:03:43Speaker 8: not a good sign for Arch. It does feel like they're,
- 2:03:46Speaker 8: you know, starting to have to make quarterback change, which
- 2:03:48Speaker 8: is crazy. You know, sooner than later, it feels like, right?
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: I think, but who knows?
- 2:03:55Speaker 3: Jeff Schwartz is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 2:03:57Speaker 3: talking all things college football. six undefeated teams left as
- 2:04:02Speaker 3: we have already talked about this week. One of those
- 2:04:05Speaker 3: is UCLA who, uh, lost their starting quarterback. How sustainable
- 2:04:10Speaker 3: is it for UCLA? Yeah, I don't, they've got a decent,
- 2:04:14Speaker 3: when I say decent, I mean a relatively easy schedule
- 2:04:16Speaker 3: ahead of them, but is, is this one going to
- 2:04:19Speaker 3: drop off a cliff because Nico's out?
- 2:04:22Speaker 8: I don't think the Bruins are that good, man. I,
- 2:04:24Speaker 8: I just, they're, they're a good team. Um, They beat Oregon,
- 2:04:30Speaker 8: who had the worst EPA. I mean, Oregon turned the
- 2:04:33Speaker 8: ball over six times, right? And they beat them by two.
- 2:04:36Speaker 8: And they beat Wisconsin in a game that just was
- 2:04:38Speaker 8: horrendously officiated. And Wisconsin just, I mean, just everything went
- 2:04:42Speaker 8: UCLA's way. And it's going to probably go their way
- 2:04:44Speaker 8: this weekend against Michigan State. And they're probably going to
- 2:04:48Speaker 8: be a playoff team. They're going to lose a playoff
- 2:04:50Speaker 8: game by multiple touchdowns. Chelsea's doing a really good job.
- 2:04:53Speaker 8: It's just they sort of have had things break their
- 2:04:56Speaker 8: way so far this year, which you need in a
- 2:04:57Speaker 8: given year. But I don't view them as a threat, really.
- 2:05:01Speaker 8: They scored 17 points two straight weeks and won games.
- 2:05:04Speaker 8: How often does that happen in college football? I don't know.
- 2:05:10Speaker 8: I argue not a lot.
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: Miami, BYU, UCLA, Texas Tech, Utah.
- 2:05:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:05:20Speaker 3: All undefeated still. Which one of those teams finishes with
- 2:05:24Speaker 3: the worst record?
- 2:05:26Speaker 8: Say them again.
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: Miami, BYU, Texas Tech, UCLA, Utah.
- 2:05:36Speaker 8: The problem is UCLA's schedule is so easy. They're going
- 2:05:40Speaker 8: to be a favorite to win nearly every game down
- 2:05:42Speaker 8: the stretch. Texas Tech's schedule is super easy too, right?
- 2:05:47Speaker 8: They don't get BYU or Utah.
- 2:05:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:05:52Speaker 3: Texas Tech's schedule, now Arizona's ranked, so they have... Ranked
- 2:05:57Speaker 3: Arizona on Halloween, and then they've got a road game
- 2:06:01Speaker 3: against Oklahoma State, a road game against Baylor, and they
- 2:06:04Speaker 3: finish the year with TCU.
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: Baylor's decent.
- 2:06:07Speaker 8: How many games are you guys losing? Geez. I'll say
- 2:06:13Speaker 8: BYU just to make your fans happy. All right. BYU.
- 2:06:20Speaker 8: Fair enough. Yeah, BYU it is.
- 2:06:24Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:06:25Speaker 3: In the NFL, my San Francisco 49ers remain undefeated and
- 2:06:29Speaker 3: are the very obvious Super Bowl champions. Can we shut
- 2:06:32Speaker 3: down the season now?
- 2:06:37Speaker 8: I don't know how to keep doing it, Sean. They're
- 2:06:40Speaker 8: so injured. Mike Evans has an Achilles problem now, which
- 2:06:43Speaker 8: sounds like it's one wrong move away from Achilles injury, right?
- 2:06:46Speaker 8: You know, just... I think I was doing my pockets earlier.
- 2:06:51Speaker 8: I think it's 23 of 29 targets have gone. Last
- 2:06:54Speaker 8: night went to three guys, right? McCaffrey, Kittle, and Mike Evans.
- 2:07:00Speaker 8: They're rushing the passer somehow, which they haven't done for
- 2:07:02Speaker 8: years now. I don't know how they keep it going,
- 2:07:05Speaker 8: but they certainly are, and they're playing good football. I mean,
- 2:07:08Speaker 8: let's just go show you Shanahan, right, man? Like, Shanahan
- 2:07:10Speaker 8: is an incredible coach. This team is prepared to play
- 2:07:13Speaker 8: each and every week. It's striking when they play teams
- 2:07:16Speaker 8: like Washington last night who just isn't coached as well
- 2:07:18Speaker 8: as Shanahan. And a Shanahan team. It's pretty remarkable to
- 2:07:22Speaker 8: see the difference in those.
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: Where is Jim Harbaugh coaching next year?
- 2:07:28Speaker 8: He's a special assistant for the New York Giants with
- 2:07:30Speaker 8: his brother. He can't go to college football. I would
- 2:07:35Speaker 8: have said USC, but he can't coach USC. And USC
- 2:07:37Speaker 8: might be a playoff team. So funny. USC is like
- 2:07:41Speaker 8: 123rd in the country in points per drive on defense.
- 2:07:45Speaker 8: It's just insanely bad. Did you know, by the way,
- 2:07:48Speaker 8: the NBA is on right now at the first game
- 2:07:50Speaker 8: of the regular season? It started at 3 p.m. Eastern
- 2:07:53Speaker 8: on Tuesday.
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: I'm watching it right now. 21-18 Detroit on top of
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: Boston with 2.5 points. minutes left in the first. Yeah.
- 2:08:04Speaker 8: That's insane. I don't know how. I don't know why
- 2:08:07Speaker 8: they did that.
- 2:08:11Speaker 3: James is telling me in my ear that they gave
- 2:08:13Speaker 3: all the tip-off day games to NBC and So they
- 2:08:17Speaker 3: had to all be, you know, they've got three games
- 2:08:19Speaker 3: they've got to play today.
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: So they had to put one early.
- 2:08:22Speaker 8: Okay. Interesting.
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: Utah's on, this is like the fourth straight night game.
- 2:08:31Speaker 8: As a fan, as an East Coast person, I hate the,
- 2:08:35Speaker 8: I can never watch you guys. You're so late at night.
- 2:08:37Speaker 8: I did watch your film, obviously, last week, but like
- 2:08:39Speaker 8: so late at night.
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: The fan base is starting to get a little restless
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: about it.
- 2:08:43Speaker 3: I like the night games because I can kind of like,
- 2:08:46Speaker 3: be with the kids all day, put them to bed-ish.
- 2:08:49Speaker 8: It's 9 o'clock, though.
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: It's not 11. Not everyone has little kids that are
- 2:08:55Speaker 3: going to bed at 7.30 either. There's a lot of
- 2:09:00Speaker 3: people who are bothered by the idea that they've got
- 2:09:02Speaker 3: to stay out until 1 a.m.
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: In order to see a Utah football game.
- 2:09:06Speaker 8: I think my son goes to bed after us some nights.
- 2:09:08Speaker 8: I think last night was one of them. I went
- 2:09:10Speaker 8: to bed at halftime last night. I think he was
- 2:09:11Speaker 8: still awake. He just walked in our room. He's like,
- 2:09:14Speaker 8: good night. I was like, good night. When Norman's on
- 2:09:17Speaker 8: the bed now, like at 1030 on a school night.
- 2:09:19Speaker 8: That a boy.
- 2:09:20Speaker 1: He just is up.
- 2:09:21Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 2:09:21Speaker 8: What are you going to do about it?
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: His season's over, right?
- 2:09:25Speaker 6: Alex?
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: His baseball season?
- 2:09:27Speaker 8: No, he's got two more games. Okay. Thunderbats, an 8-1 Thunderbats.
- 2:09:31Speaker 8: We're going to be the second place out of 28 teams,
- 2:09:33Speaker 8: I think. Nice.
- 2:09:34Speaker 6: Softball.
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: Do they have playoffs?
- 2:09:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:09:37Speaker 8: We're going to buy.
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: Let's go. Let's go.
- 2:09:39Speaker 8: Dude, I'm Emmy this week, buddy. Holy heck. She went
- 2:09:45Speaker 8: to the tournament Sunday. Girls good at softball. How's Utah's program?
- 2:09:51Speaker 8: Can you guys recruit her?
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: Yes, we'll make a phone call.
- 2:09:55Speaker 8: She wants to play Oregon. I was like, that's too
- 2:09:57Speaker 8: far away.
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Utah's a lot closer.
- 2:10:01Speaker 8: It certainly is. Perfect.
- 2:10:04Speaker 3: Last thing before we let you go, there's a problem.
- 2:10:08Speaker 3: We were talking betting in the last segment.
- 2:10:10Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:10:11Speaker 3: There's a potential problem for all the BYU fans that
- 2:10:14Speaker 3: maybe put money on their team before the season started.
- 2:10:17Speaker 8: Oh, what's the problem?
- 2:10:18Speaker 3: Well, in the most recent general conference, the leadership of
- 2:10:26Speaker 3: the actual religion said, hey, we don't want you betting anymore.
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: So people have to kind of back off the betting stuff.
- 2:10:33Speaker 8: That's out.
- 2:10:35Speaker 3: Now maybe they can't cash their bets. So I brought
- 2:10:38Speaker 3: up the tradition that exists with, you know, sometimes the goy,
- 2:10:43Speaker 3: the Shabbos goy, helping out an Orthodox Jewish family by
- 2:10:48Speaker 3: turning on the stove or the lights or whatever. And
- 2:10:52Speaker 3: we could serve that role for the BYU fans.
- 2:10:56Speaker 8: So we go in their account and cash their money
- 2:10:58Speaker 8: for them?
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 2:10:59Speaker 8: Or they can sell their ticket to somebody.
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: Well, there you go. You just solved the problem for us.
- 2:11:05Speaker 8: There's websites that you can put your ticket on there
- 2:11:08Speaker 8: and people will buy it for you.
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: You can sell your winning ticket on there and someone
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: can buy it at a discount, I imagine?
- 2:11:11Speaker 8: No, no, no. So let's say you took BYU to
- 2:11:15Speaker 8: win the Big 12 whenever it was 10-1 before the season.
- 2:11:18Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:11:18Speaker 8: You put $ 100 on it. It's probably worth, I don't know,
- 2:11:22Speaker 8: $ 300 now. Nice. So you sell it for like $ 300. Okay.
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: So you get a profit. I didn't know about that. See?
- 2:11:27Speaker 8: And then they take your ticket over. Perfect.
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: We solved the problem.
- 2:11:31Speaker 8: That'd be great.
- 2:11:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:11:33Speaker 8: The church was like, no more gambling.
- 2:11:36Speaker 3: I think that there's a recognition that everyone's losing money
- 2:11:41Speaker 3: doing these prediction markets and stuff. Do you have prediction
- 2:11:44Speaker 3: markets in Utah? Yeah, they do have prediction markets here.
- 2:11:48Speaker 3: It's like strictly not legal, but how do you enforce it?
- 2:11:51Speaker 3: Because it's just on people's phones.
- 2:11:53Speaker 8: I love how PMs, they're absolutely gambling, but they somehow
- 2:11:57Speaker 8: get to avoid the regulation of gambling because of prediction markets. 100%.
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 2:12:00Speaker 8: I mean, like.
- 2:12:03Speaker 3: My wife showed me on the Robinhood stock trading app.
- 2:12:07Speaker 3: They have a prediction market section there. So you're just like,
- 2:12:11Speaker 3: it's right. It's just in your palm.
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: I love it.
- 2:12:13Speaker 8: It is. I haven't heard Robinhood in six years since
- 2:12:15Speaker 8: we were trading AMC stocks and COVID. Your wife checking
- 2:12:22Speaker 8: Robinhood often?
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: Dude, my wife is a shark on the Robinhood app.
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: She bets everything.
- 2:12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, we went to fights the other night, and then
- 2:12:32Speaker 3: she went to the BYU game with her family, and
- 2:12:36Speaker 3: she called me celebrating not because BYU had won, but
- 2:12:41Speaker 3: because she had placed a bet on BYU.
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: A prediction.
- 2:12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, she did a money line, like 5-1 on the
- 2:12:50Speaker 3: prediction market money line.
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: So she's like, where are the money? I was like,
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: what is wrong with you, degenerate?
- 2:12:56Speaker 8: So I'm sure she's giving that money to you.
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: Oh, for sure.
- 2:13:02Speaker 8: Yes. I have so many Meredith stories. I know we
- 2:13:05Speaker 8: don't have time for Meredith stories, but she actually came
- 2:13:07Speaker 8: to Emmy softball this weekend, and it was a Meredith experience.
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: Was she playing the ponies at the.
- 2:13:15Speaker 8: Kid's softball game? No, but her cousin might have been
- 2:13:18Speaker 8: asked to leave by the umpire for yelling at the umpire.
- 2:13:23Speaker 8: Fun times, Schwartz household.
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: I love it so much.
- 2:13:26Speaker 8: The umpire, to be fair, was a little bit sensitive.
- 2:13:28Speaker 8: He missed a very bad call, and everyone was yelling
- 2:13:30Speaker 8: at him. He was like, someone's got to leave from
- 2:13:32Speaker 8: the fans. And Charity was like, I didn't want to
- 2:13:35Speaker 8: leave anyway. They were like, fine, I'll just go. I
- 2:13:38Speaker 8: think a lot of parents said something to the umpire.
- 2:13:40Speaker 8: It was one of those where it was an easy
- 2:13:43Speaker 8: rule thing, and he just didn't see it. He actually
- 2:13:46Speaker 8: said to our coach, I didn't see it. It's probably
- 2:13:49Speaker 8: a bad answer.
- 2:13:50Speaker 3: I'm bothered that you deprived us of her on Real
- 2:13:52Speaker 3: Housewives of Charlotte.
- 2:13:54Speaker 8: Oh, I'm not. She's a good job. Let's hope she
- 2:13:57Speaker 8: keeps it.
- 2:13:59Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Talk to you next week.
- 2:14:00Speaker 8: Take care, buddy. Talk to you. Enjoy staying up this weekend. Yes.
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: That's Jeff Schwartz. And we will be staying up this weekend,
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: by the way. It is a blackout game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 2:14:11Speaker 3: 8-15 kickoff, which really is more like an 8-30 kickoff
- 2:14:15Speaker 3: because they wait a little bit to see if the
- 2:14:17Speaker 3: game before is going to end so you don't have
- 2:14:19Speaker 3: to start on ESPN News. They push it until about 8-30,
- 2:14:23Speaker 3: and then you've got to kick off.
- 2:14:25Speaker 5: And more importantly, he gave us another solution so we
- 2:14:29Speaker 5: don't have to do the reverse Shalva Skoy, but he
- 2:14:31Speaker 5: said he's willing to do the reverse Shalva Skoy for
- 2:14:35Speaker 5: you members of the church. It takes a lot of
- 2:14:37Speaker 5: the fun out of it. Who may have put a
- 2:14:40Speaker 5: futures bet on BYU to win the Big 12. It
- 2:14:42Speaker 5: takes some of the fun out of it than just
- 2:14:44Speaker 5: being able to handle it directly.
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: All right. I asked the question at the top of
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: the show.
- 2:14:50Speaker 3: The mid season superlatives, the, your offensive player of the year,
- 2:14:53Speaker 3: your defensive player of the year, your newcomer of the year,
- 2:14:56Speaker 3: best coach.
- 2:14:58Speaker 1: I don't think you could say Morgan. I think you
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: got it.
- 2:15:00Speaker 3: We'll make it assistant coaches, your team MVP overall. And
- 2:15:04Speaker 3: if you have any superlatives on the negative side, your
- 2:15:07Speaker 3: biggest disappointment, your where the heck is this guy?
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: What happened to him?
- 2:15:10Speaker 3: 8 7 7 3 5 3 0 700 at real
- 2:15:13Speaker 3: OC sports. We're going to give away nickelback tickets at
- 2:15:17Speaker 3: the end of the show. Want your input next. It's
- 2:15:20Speaker 3: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:15:26Speaker 7: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:15:29Speaker 7: best inside.
- 2:15:30Speaker 8: Of your youth.
- 2:15:31Speaker 7: Let's get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio
- 2:15:34Speaker 7: of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:15:35Speaker 8: 877-353-0700 at RealOCSports.com.
- 2:15:48Speaker 3: Your defensive MVP, your offensive MVP, your overall team MVP,
- 2:15:54Speaker 3: your newcomer of the year, your best coach for this
- 2:15:57Speaker 3: Utah football team. We had a couple more responses we
- 2:15:59Speaker 3: didn't get to. The boss man on Twitter says, defensive MVP,
- 2:16:05Speaker 3: Rabbit Evans.
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: Rabbit has been, I.
- 2:16:08Speaker 3: Don't want to say surprising, because we knew he was
- 2:16:11Speaker 3: a good player when healthy, but.
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: The fact that he is getting.
- 2:16:15Speaker 3: 99% of the responses for defensive MVP as his name,
- 2:16:21Speaker 3: I think is pretty telling here. The boss man says
- 2:16:25Speaker 3: zero way. Williams has been the offensive MVP. I don't
- 2:16:28Speaker 3: know if I would go that far with zero way,
- 2:16:30Speaker 3: but I am very impressed with the way that he
- 2:16:32Speaker 3: and the whole offensive line have played. You're going to
- 2:16:35Speaker 3: have to step that up against Houston. You're going to
- 2:16:37Speaker 3: have to look way better against BYU than you've looked
- 2:16:40Speaker 3: all year. If you want to stop what they are
- 2:16:42Speaker 3: able to do defensively, but The offensive line and Zerway
- 2:16:47Speaker 3: have done great. Newcomer of the year, once again, Braden Pagan,
- 2:16:51Speaker 3: and coach of the year for a lot of people
- 2:16:53Speaker 3: right now, including Bossman, is Jordan Gross.
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: We came into the season with a lot.
- 2:16:58Speaker 3: Of worry, a lot of trepidation, a lot of questions
- 2:17:01Speaker 3: about whether or not this Utah offensive line was going
- 2:17:04Speaker 3: to be able to keep up with the talent you
- 2:17:07Speaker 3: have in these other position rooms. And Jordan Gross has
- 2:17:14Speaker 3: led us to a place where You don't have to
- 2:17:16Speaker 3: ask those questions anymore. You don't feel that nervousness anymore.
- 2:17:22Speaker 3: Overall team MVP. According to this tweet is a way.
- 2:17:26Speaker 3: Sean Parker, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 2:17:29Speaker 3: If you want to weigh in with your superlatives Hayden
- 2:17:33Speaker 3: on the tweet machine also said defensive MVP, rabbit Evans,
- 2:17:36Speaker 3: offensive MVP, way. Sean Parker pagan is newcomer of the
- 2:17:40Speaker 3: year and overall team MVP is way. Sean said his
- 2:17:44Speaker 3: disappointment because giving us a new perspective because the defensive
- 2:17:50Speaker 3: ends have been mentioned multiple times. He said, Larry Simmons
- 2:17:53Speaker 3: has been the disappointment. Larry Simmons has been fine when
- 2:17:56Speaker 3: he's targeted. And I think that this is a place
- 2:18:01Speaker 3: we have to be kind of careful because like for me,
- 2:18:03Speaker 3: I Hunter Andrews has been kind of a disappointment, not
- 2:18:08Speaker 3: because he's played poorly, but because they just haven't gotten
- 2:18:11Speaker 3: him involved the way that I thought. I thought he
- 2:18:14Speaker 3: was one of those guys we were going to say, wow,
- 2:18:15Speaker 3: look what this kid is capable of. Look what he
- 2:18:17Speaker 3: could do. I don't think he's played poorly at all.
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: I don't think he's making mistakes. I hear good things
- 2:18:23Speaker 3: about the way that he's practicing, but the ball just
- 2:18:28Speaker 3: can't find it into everyone's hands 10 times a game.
- 2:18:32Speaker 3: And actually, I want less of the distribution around. I
- 2:18:36Speaker 3: want the butter to be handed to Way Sean Parker,
- 2:18:40Speaker 3: not to Hunter Andrews or to Larry Simmons or to
- 2:18:46Speaker 3: Kyrie Scholes.
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: Like, where did he go?
- 2:18:49Speaker 6: Right?
- 2:18:54Speaker 3: Hayden also says a potential breakout could still be coming
- 2:18:57Speaker 3: from Creed Whittemore, who is, by the way, One of
- 2:19:02Speaker 3: the guests on the coaches show tonight, which of course
- 2:19:06Speaker 3: you can listen to after Spencer's show right here on
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. That is Bobo Chenault and
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: Creed Whittemore. Chenault had a good game until he didn't
- 2:19:28Speaker 3: know what the defensive play was coming in. And then
- 2:19:31Speaker 3: he gave up a touchdown as he was looking to
- 2:19:33Speaker 3: the sideline. But that'll be a fascinating point of conversation
- 2:19:37Speaker 3: for Bill Riley and Sly and everyone else involved in
- 2:19:40Speaker 3: the coaches show tonight.
- 2:19:44Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: Put this number in your phone before we take a break.
- 2:19:47Speaker 6: 801-355-5550.
- 2:19:47Speaker 3: You can also go to Utah advocates.com. All you're looking
- 2:19:54Speaker 3: for right now is a no-cost consultation. You probably don't
- 2:19:57Speaker 3: know whether or not you have a case. Maybe you've
- 2:20:00Speaker 3: been in a car accident. Maybe there was a slip-and-fall
- 2:20:02Speaker 3: situation at work. Maybe something fell off a high shelf
- 2:20:05Speaker 3: and you had to get some stitches, or maybe there's
- 2:20:07Speaker 3: a concussion, heaven forbid. Maybe you were walking your dog
- 2:20:11Speaker 3: and there was something wrong with the neighbor's sidewalk, and
- 2:20:15Speaker 3: the city needs to come out and figure out what's
- 2:20:17Speaker 3: going on with those things. If you don't know if
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: you have a case, this is the number you got
- 2:20:23Speaker 3: to call.
- 2:20:23Speaker 8: 801-355-5550.
- 2:20:24Speaker 3: If you're sure you have a case and you're ready
- 2:20:28Speaker 3: to start pursuing it, save that number in your phone
- 2:20:31Speaker 3: and call the advocates, personal injury attorneys that work in
- 2:20:36Speaker 3: partnership with you.
- 2:20:37Speaker 1: They are award winning.
- 2:20:38Speaker 3: They've got this long, incredible track record of making sure
- 2:20:41Speaker 3: people get the money that they deserve. And the most
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: important thing is you don't have to come out of pocket.
- 2:20:46Speaker 3: You never pay a dime while they work on the
- 2:20:49Speaker 3: case because You pay when the case is won. So
- 2:20:53Speaker 3: if you've been injured while you were jogging or while
- 2:20:55Speaker 3: you were walking or while you were backpedaling or while
- 2:20:57Speaker 3: you were scootering or while you were riding a bike
- 2:21:00Speaker 3: or you were driving your car or you're on your motorcycle,
- 2:21:04Speaker 3: call the advocates at 801-355-5550. You did not deserve to
- 2:21:09Speaker 3: get in an accident. You do deserve to have an
- 2:21:11Speaker 3: advocate working for your rights. Celtics leading the Pistons in
- 2:21:17Speaker 3: the first game of the NBA season. 35 34 in
- 2:21:21Speaker 3: the second quarter final segment of the show coming and
- 2:21:25Speaker 3: we have two tickets to nickelback that's right we'll answer
- 2:21:32Speaker 3: we'll ask a little trivia question for you two tickets
- 2:21:34Speaker 3: to nickelback coming april 22nd to the delta center a
- 2:21:39Speaker 3: little cross talk we'll have some fun to finish off
- 2:21:42Speaker 3: the show cspn 700 and 92.1.
- 2:21:43Speaker 7: Fm You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source
- 2:21:56Speaker 7: for the best youth football coverage.
- 2:21:58Speaker 8: Here's O.C.
- 2:21:58Speaker 7: From the Murdoch Hyundai.
- 2:22:00Speaker 8: Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:22:01Speaker 7: Just listen to the glorious lyrics.
- 2:22:24Speaker 3: If you want to be there at the Delta Center,
- 2:22:27Speaker 3: April 22nd, when Nickelback comes to town, 877-353-0700. I've got
- 2:22:32Speaker 3: a pair of tickets for you. If you could tell
- 2:22:35Speaker 3: me as the NBA season opens today, which foreign country
- 2:22:43Speaker 3: has the greatest number of NBA players on opening day rosters?
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: Not the United States. Which foreign country?
- 2:22:54Speaker 3: Has placed the highest number of NBA players on opening
- 2:22:58Speaker 3: day rosters in 2026. We talked about it with Gordy
- 2:23:02Speaker 3: Chiesa earlier, 877-353-0700. James sent the full list of foreign-born
- 2:23:18Speaker 3: NBA players, and it's fascinating. I actually, I looked up,
- 2:23:22Speaker 3: around the NFL and major league baseball and the NHL,
- 2:23:26Speaker 3: 18 countries represented in the NHL, 43 countries represented in
- 2:23:34Speaker 3: the NBA, 15 countries represented in major league baseball. And
- 2:23:41Speaker 3: I thought, Oh, you know what? The NFL is going
- 2:23:43Speaker 3: to have the lowest number here. The NFL is maybe
- 2:23:49Speaker 3: there's a, you know, Maybe there's a half dozen countries.
- 2:23:53Speaker 3: You got a few guys from Canada.
- 2:23:55Speaker 1: You got Simone's and Tongans.
- 2:24:02Speaker 3: Guess how many foreign nations are represented on NFL rosters
- 2:24:06Speaker 3: in the 2026 season?
- 2:24:07Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:24:07Speaker 1: So 43 and 43 in the NBA. How many are
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: you baseball? 15 in baseball, 18 in the NHL.
- 2:24:10Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: I didn't realize baseball was that low. I would have
- 2:24:17Speaker 1: guessed more.
- 2:24:18Speaker 3: It's like Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, uh, a couple of
- 2:24:23Speaker 3: Caribbean nations.
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: South and Central America. Hey, for sure.
- 2:24:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:24:27Speaker 3: There's no, there's like, there's nobody from Switzerland on a baseball.
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: That's true.
- 2:24:32Speaker 5: You're, they have not, they've not had Europeans infiltrate the game. Uh,
- 2:24:38Speaker 5: like they have an NBA and of course soccer. Um,
- 2:24:44Speaker 5: So how many in the, in the NFL? I'm going
- 2:24:51Speaker 5: to say six, 38, 38.
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: Isn't that wild?
- 2:24:53Speaker 5: The percentage is way. And I guess maybe it's because
- 2:24:57Speaker 5: more volume of players.
- 2:24:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:24:59Speaker 1: Low percentage can still be a lot of countries.
- 2:25:02Speaker 3: There's a huge number of players from different countries, but
- 2:25:06Speaker 3: it's a small percentage because they're big.
- 2:25:08Speaker 1: They're big rosters.
- 2:25:09Speaker 3: 53 man rosters.
- 2:25:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:25:12Speaker 3: But it's like, your Pacific nations, there's guys from Australia,
- 2:25:15Speaker 3: there's guys from New Zealand, there's guys from Canada, there's
- 2:25:18Speaker 3: guys from Germany. There's several, several African countries now represented
- 2:25:23Speaker 3: Cameroon and Nigeria, a lot of West African nations.
- 2:25:26Speaker 5: Now that you like say it, I'm like, well, there's
- 2:25:29Speaker 5: like six Pacific Islander country. Like six is a ridiculous
- 2:25:33Speaker 5: number for me to guess, but it, but, It's because
- 2:25:36Speaker 5: the percentage was so low. I'm like, well, it's got
- 2:25:38Speaker 5: to be a single digit number.
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: That's crazy. That's right. But you think about it.
- 2:25:42Speaker 3: And I was just like, yeah, it's like it's such
- 2:25:44Speaker 3: a unique American sport.
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: But there's a lot. There's a lot of people from
- 2:25:50Speaker 1: different nations.
- 2:25:50Speaker 3: So the NBA highest 43 countries represented on NBA rosters,
- 2:25:55Speaker 3: 38 on NFL rosters and the NHL and Major League
- 2:26:00Speaker 3: Baseball is the lowest.
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: I would have guessed MLB had more than 25. That's
- 2:26:06Speaker 1: what I would have guessed.
- 2:26:07Speaker 3: I would have guessed there would be kind of a lot.
- 2:26:10Speaker 3: In the NBA, you've got some places that only have
- 2:26:15Speaker 3: one player. Portugal's got one who happens to have ties.
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: Here to the state of Utah. Oh, who is the
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: Portuguese player? Nemeus Keita. Oh, yeah, yeah, of course. He's Portuguese-born.
- 2:26:30Speaker 1: Playing right now for the Celtics.
- 2:26:35Speaker 3: Sweden's got one player also ties to the state of
- 2:26:37Speaker 3: Utah here. Former Ute Pella Larson is the only Swedish
- 2:26:44Speaker 3: player on an NBA roster. Ukraine, one player on an
- 2:26:49Speaker 3: NBA roster. Jazzman, Shvi, Mikhailuk. So there's a bunch of
- 2:26:57Speaker 3: countries that just have the one guy. Serbia has six.
- 2:27:04Speaker 3: By the way, the correct answer to win the Nickelback
- 2:27:07Speaker 3: tickets has not yet been texted in.
- 2:27:10Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 2:27:11Speaker 3: Which foreign nation has the highest number of active players
- 2:27:15Speaker 3: on NBA rosters outside of the United States?
- 2:27:18Speaker 1: Oh, I just had to refresh. It's actually been texted
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: in a bunch of times. France.
- 2:27:23Speaker 3: France has 17 guys on NBA rosters. Canada is second
- 2:27:29Speaker 3: with 16. Australia has nine.
- 2:27:32Speaker 1: Germany.
- 2:27:34Speaker 3: Serbia following up with six. Spence Jackets in the... drive
- 2:27:40Speaker 3: are next. You can listen to him from two to
- 2:27:43Speaker 3: six right here every single day. Then after that is
- 2:27:46Speaker 3: going to be the Morgan Scali coaches show with Creed
- 2:27:49Speaker 3: Whittemore and Bobo Chanel.
- 2:27:52Speaker 1: Hi Spence.
- 2:27:52Speaker 4: Hello, Sean.
- 2:27:53Speaker 8: How are you?
- 2:27:54Speaker 4: I'm well, how are you?
- 2:27:55Speaker 1: Great.
- 2:27:55Speaker 8: It's a beautiful day.
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: It's a wonderful day.
- 2:27:57Speaker 4: Are you going to get outside after the show?
- 2:27:59Speaker 1: I probably will. I have to walk outside after the show.
- 2:28:03Speaker 4: Well, I mean, outside of walking to your vehicle.
- 2:28:05Speaker 11: Do you have some fun outdoor plans this evening? I
- 2:28:08Speaker 11: didn't have any plans, but, you know. Maybe a fire
- 2:28:11Speaker 11: pit out in back of the O'Connell household?
- 2:28:14Speaker 3: We do have an outdoor little, you know, just the
- 2:28:17Speaker 3: one that's got the fire table. It has the tank
- 2:28:20Speaker 3: hidden underneath it.
- 2:28:21Speaker 8: That's all you need.
- 2:28:22Speaker 1: That's all you need.
- 2:28:22Speaker 4: Can you cook s'mores on it?
- 2:28:24Speaker 1: That's what we do. It's the only thing we use
- 2:28:25Speaker 1: it for.
- 2:28:26Speaker 4: What's your preferred s'mores recipe?
- 2:28:31Speaker 8: What else?
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: Marshmallows.
- 2:28:33Speaker 8: And?
- 2:28:35Speaker 3: You use the Ghirardelli Squares caramel chocolate.
- 2:28:38Speaker 11: See, I knew there was going to be something. I
- 2:28:39Speaker 11: knew you weren't just going to say chocolate. Yeah.
- 2:28:41Speaker 4: I knew it was going to be some sort of
- 2:28:43Speaker 4: fine type of chocolate.
- 2:28:44Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:28:45Speaker 1: It's like you use the caramel one, though. So that's
- 2:28:47Speaker 1: a caramel s'more.
- 2:28:50Speaker 4: So we found out what Sean is willing to spend
- 2:28:52Speaker 4: money on.
- 2:28:52Speaker 11: Because you get like the regular Hershey's chocolate, but if
- 2:28:56Speaker 11: you're getting the nice stuff, then you're throwing cash down.
- 2:28:59Speaker 1: You know? It's probably the only place I'm willing to
- 2:29:02Speaker 1: spend a little bit of money is on food.
- 2:29:04Speaker 4: Anything for the kiddos, though, right?
- 2:29:05Speaker 1: I don't know, man. They're unappreciative of such fine things.
- 2:29:09Speaker 8: How are they hanging in?
- 2:29:10Speaker 6: Great.
- 2:29:11Speaker 1: You doing all right? They're the best.
- 2:29:12Speaker 4: There are three of them, right?
- 2:29:13Speaker 1: There's three.
- 2:29:14Speaker 4: Oldest is?
- 2:29:16Speaker 1: Second grader. Seven and a half.
- 2:29:18Speaker 4: Can you say her name?
- 2:29:19Speaker 6: Yeah. Rowan. Rowan.
- 2:29:21Speaker 4: Give me one adjective to describe Rowan.
- 2:29:24Speaker 1: Hilarious. Okay.
- 2:29:25Speaker 8: Second?
- 2:29:27Speaker 1: Cameron.
- 2:29:27Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:29:28Speaker 4: Give me one for Cameron.
- 2:29:30Speaker 6: Oh, man.
- 2:29:31Speaker 1: High maintenance. She's high maintenance.
- 2:29:33Speaker 8: And the youngest? Spicy.
- 2:29:35Speaker 1: We'll call her spicy.
- 2:29:36Speaker 4: We got spicy, high maintenance, and hilarious.
- 2:29:38Speaker 8: Yes.
- 2:29:39Speaker 4: What about Kendall?
- 2:29:40Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 2:29:43Speaker 11: Well, I mean, outside of just reducing her to her looks,
- 2:29:46Speaker 11: how about who.
- 2:29:46Speaker 4: She is as a person?
- 2:29:50Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, you're right.
- 2:29:52Speaker 4: I'm just trying to help you.
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: No, I appreciate that.
- 2:29:55Speaker 4: She is a very beautiful woman.
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: I get to use one? You know what?
- 2:29:59Speaker 8: Let's open it up.
- 2:30:00Speaker 4: But let's talk about the main one as a person.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: The main character trait of my wife. Caring.
- 2:30:08Speaker 8: Caring.
- 2:30:08Speaker 1: She's a caring person.
- 2:30:09Speaker 4: Okay, now we can expand it.
- 2:30:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:30:12Speaker 1: She cares about everything and everybody except me.
- 2:30:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that sounds right.
- 2:30:16Speaker 1: Just kidding.
- 2:30:17Speaker 11: Okay, outside carrying, what else is she? She's adventurous. It's
- 2:30:21Speaker 11: actually really crazy. My wife is like a weird daredevil.
- 2:30:24Speaker 8: I like that.
- 2:30:25Speaker 3: To the point where I'm like, stop doing that kind
- 2:30:28Speaker 3: of stuff, because you're going to get yourself hurt. If
- 2:30:32Speaker 3: you go skiing with my wife, you're not just going
- 2:30:36Speaker 3: to ski and enjoy the slopes. She's going to take
- 2:30:38Speaker 3: you down some double black diamond backcountry run.
- 2:30:41Speaker 1: She's a bit of an adrenaline junk.
- 2:30:43Speaker 8: Interesting.
- 2:30:43Speaker 1: It's really fascinating.
- 2:30:44Speaker 3: And so are you in a way, right? People would
- 2:30:47Speaker 3: think because of like what I used to do for work.
- 2:30:50Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:30:50Speaker 3: That my personality is more geared towards some of that because,
- 2:30:53Speaker 3: you know, physical combat is something that a lot of
- 2:30:56Speaker 3: people shy away from, but I'm like, no, I'm cool.
- 2:30:59Speaker 3: Just like enjoying this. Like we're going, we're going for
- 2:31:02Speaker 3: a little ride. She's like, let's drag race instead.
- 2:31:04Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 2:31:05Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: Wild card. I like that.
- 2:31:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:31:07Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 2:31:08Speaker 4: One thing about her you wish you could change.
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: Spending habits.
- 2:31:13Speaker 4: But not like who she is as a person.
- 2:31:15Speaker 1: Spending habits.
- 2:31:19Speaker 4: What would she say about you?
- 2:31:20Speaker 1: Oh, I don't even want to know.
- 2:31:23Speaker 4: What would she say your best character trait is?
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: You got to talk to her, man.
- 2:31:28Speaker 4: Why do you think she married you?
- 2:31:31Speaker 1: I think that she was impressed by my abs.
- 2:31:36Speaker 4: Well, we all know that's not the case.
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we know that's not the case.
- 2:31:39Speaker 4: Do you think it's going to last?
- 2:31:41Speaker 8: Yeah. I'm just kidding.
- 2:31:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:31:44Speaker 1: I'm betting on it.
- 2:31:44Speaker 8: I'm just kidding. How was the show, man? It was good.
- 2:31:47Speaker 4: Caught a little bit of it here or there as
- 2:31:49Speaker 4: I was driving around.
- 2:31:50Speaker 3: Have you ever done a s'more by dipping a Reese's
- 2:31:52Speaker 3: peanut butter cup in marshmallow fluff and.
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: Then roasting it?
- 2:31:55Speaker 4: Ooh, that sounds awesome.
- 2:31:56Speaker 3: The marshmallow fluff feels like cheating because you're trying to
- 2:32:00Speaker 3: turn the marshmallow itself into fluff. That's why you're applying heat.
- 2:32:05Speaker 4: And there is an art to it.
- 2:32:06Speaker 1: And you want... I want a good char, right?
- 2:32:09Speaker 4: You like a good char.
- 2:32:09Speaker 1: I like it to be a little burnt on the outside.
- 2:32:11Speaker 8: But just a little.
- 2:32:12Speaker 1: Yeah, not a ton. You're not immolating the thing.
- 2:32:15Speaker 4: Yeah, the masochists that just burn it right away. Like,
- 2:32:17Speaker 4: come on. We're doing a thing here. Participate.
- 2:32:19Speaker 1: Yeah, like, don't... You gotta be an artiste about it.
- 2:32:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:32:23Speaker 1: You gotta try to get the right crust on there.
- 2:32:26Speaker 11: Have the girls decided on their Halloween costumes?
- 2:32:28Speaker 6: Not yet.
- 2:32:29Speaker 1: You guys... We're a family of procrastinators, so.
- 2:32:32Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:32:33Speaker 3: Day before Halloween, we'll be picking through some bargain bin...
- 2:32:36Speaker 3: For a terrible costume.
- 2:32:38Speaker 11: Well, it makes sense if Kendall's out skydiving while the
- 2:32:40Speaker 11: kids are in school or something.
- 2:32:42Speaker 1: That's right. She's probably dirt bike racing at the moment.
- 2:32:45Speaker 4: Do you trick-or-treat in your neighborhood?
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: We do now, yeah.
- 2:32:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good spot to trick-or-treat.
- 2:32:52Speaker 3: It wasn't always, but there's a bit of unfortunate turnover
- 2:32:57Speaker 3: happening right now with the age demographic.
- 2:32:59Speaker 1: Of our neighborhood.
- 2:33:01Speaker 4: The boomers are dying off?
- 2:33:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:33:03Speaker 3: The slightly older boomers are moving out, we hope. That's
- 2:33:07Speaker 3: why their houses are for sale.
- 2:33:09Speaker 11: Have you identified the houses that go full candy bar
- 2:33:12Speaker 11: as opposed to the ones that scrimp?
- 2:33:15Speaker 1: We're not in that nice of a neighborhood. Yeah, it's
- 2:33:18Speaker 1: a pretty.
- 2:33:18Speaker 4: Nice spot, man.
- 2:33:19Speaker 1: Full candy bar?
- 2:33:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, full candy bar. You got to go
- 2:33:23Speaker 4: full candy bar.
- 2:33:23Speaker 1: What is this, Pepperwood? Wait, what do you give out? Nothing.
- 2:33:27Speaker 4: You give out nothing?
- 2:33:28Speaker 1: No, I'm just kidding.
- 2:33:29Speaker 3: We're an airhead house. Or actually, I saw this, you know,
- 2:33:34Speaker 3: the caramel apple pop? Ooh, love the caramel apple pop.
- 2:33:36Speaker 1: Caramel apple sucker. Saw a bag of those.
- 2:33:38Speaker 3: If they make it all the way till Halloween, because
- 2:33:40Speaker 3: that's another thing about my beautiful wife.
- 2:33:43Speaker 1: She loves herself a treat. She might eat all those.
- 2:33:45Speaker 1: A little bit of sweet tooth. Yeah, she might eat
- 2:33:47Speaker 1: all those before Halloween rolls around.
- 2:33:48Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:33:49Speaker 11: No, that's a nice neighborhood. It's a walkable neighborhood. It's
- 2:33:52Speaker 11: a good trick-or-treating neighborhood.
- 2:33:55Speaker 8: It's great.
- 2:33:57Speaker 1: Superlatives for the team.
- 2:33:59Speaker 3: Are we talking about Utah football? Utah football is halfway
- 2:34:02Speaker 3: through their season. Offensive MVP so far. Defensive MVP so far.
- 2:34:07Speaker 1: Coach of the year so far. You can't say Morgan.
- 2:34:10Speaker 1: Newcomer of the year.
- 2:34:12Speaker 4: Way Sean.
- 2:34:13Speaker 1: Offense.
- 2:34:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:34:16Speaker 4: Jackson Benny defense.
- 2:34:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:34:20Speaker 8: McGiven.
- 2:34:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:34:21Speaker 4: Coach of the year.
- 2:34:22Speaker 1: Mac G.
- 2:34:23Speaker 4: Newcomer pagan.
- 2:34:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:34:25Speaker 1: That's kind of the layups, right?
- 2:34:27Speaker 3: Well, rabbit Evans has been getting the bulk of the
- 2:34:30Speaker 3: defensive player of the year nods, which I appreciate.
- 2:34:33Speaker 1: He's had a great year so far.
- 2:34:35Speaker 3: Way Sean all over the place for both full team
- 2:34:38Speaker 3: MVP and offensive MVP.
- 2:34:40Speaker 1: We've had a nice assortment of coaches, right?
- 2:34:43Speaker 3: A lot of love for Jordan gross because we were
- 2:34:46Speaker 3: so worried about the offensive line.
- 2:34:47Speaker 1: They played well. Mac G certainly getting his love.
- 2:34:50Speaker 3: A couple of nods for Colton Swan as well, because
- 2:34:52Speaker 3: the defense is, barring what we saw in the second
- 2:34:55Speaker 3: half against Colorado has looked really awesome. So yeah, there's a,
- 2:34:59Speaker 3: you know, there, I wanted to, I was pretty negative
- 2:35:01Speaker 3: on the show yesterday because of that Colorado game.
- 2:35:03Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:35:03Speaker 3: But when you look at it and undefeated team halfway
- 2:35:06Speaker 3: through the season and you've had some surprises, some nice
- 2:35:09Speaker 3: little breakouts.
- 2:35:10Speaker 1: And so we went with superlatives today.
- 2:35:12Speaker 11: Well, Morgan himself, both after the game and then Monday media,
- 2:35:15Speaker 11: and we'll hear what he has to say tonight. Now
- 2:35:18Speaker 11: that they've had a couple of days to watch film,
- 2:35:20Speaker 11: I think he's been very salient in his criticism of
- 2:35:23Speaker 11: his team. And you know, look, there's nothing we can
- 2:35:26Speaker 11: say on our shows that they don't know. I mean,
- 2:35:31Speaker 11: they have to be so much better on Saturday than
- 2:35:33Speaker 11: they have been over the past two games to be Houston.
- 2:35:35Speaker 4: You know, it's interesting.
- 2:35:37Speaker 11: The kind of Wegman kid plays a little bit like,
- 2:35:39Speaker 11: but this is like a dress rehearsal for BYU in
- 2:35:42Speaker 11: a way he's like bear, but 30 pounds lighter, easier
- 2:35:46Speaker 11: to tackle.
- 2:35:47Speaker 8: Yes.
- 2:35:47Speaker 11: He's not a linebacker playing quarterback, but he's a, Pretty
- 2:35:51Speaker 11: well-built kid that likes to run.
- 2:35:52Speaker 4: He's a really good player.
- 2:35:54Speaker 11: So, you know, we've talked a lot about, are you
- 2:35:57Speaker 11: concerned about lack of sacks? And Morgan's not, so I'll
- 2:36:01Speaker 11: concede to him, obviously. But Bear Bachmeier is a problem.
- 2:36:08Speaker 4: And this is a good.
- 2:36:09Speaker 11: Dress rehearsal for Utah's defense to prepare themselves for the seventh.
- 2:36:12Speaker 8: Yeah, fair.
- 2:36:14Speaker 3: Last thing before I get out of here. Gordy came
- 2:36:17Speaker 3: on and we were talking about the international flavor of
- 2:36:19Speaker 3: the NBA.
- 2:36:20Speaker 1: 43 countries represented on NBA rosters.
- 2:36:23Speaker 3: I don't know if you heard right before you were
- 2:36:24Speaker 3: walking in when we did the breakdown on the countries
- 2:36:27Speaker 3: for Major League Baseball, the NHL, and NFL football. Does
- 2:36:33Speaker 3: that surprise you that that many countries are represented in
- 2:36:36Speaker 3: the NFL? I thought it was just like an American
- 2:36:38Speaker 3: sport with an occasional Canadian player.
- 2:36:40Speaker 1: And are, of course, Polynesians.
- 2:36:42Speaker 4: What was the number?
- 2:36:43Speaker 11: 38 countries. No part of me would have guessed that.
- 2:36:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:36:48Speaker 11: Yeah, that's stunning. I probably would have guessed like five.
- 2:36:51Speaker 11: I mean, I thought they were dead last.
- 2:36:55Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:36:55Speaker 1: And they're second behind the NBA.
- 2:36:57Speaker 4: That's interesting.
- 2:36:58Speaker 1: The NHL is last. It will be.
- 2:37:00Speaker 11: I mean, I've talked for years about the NFL's desire.
- 2:37:07Speaker 11: to permeate through Europe and international markets.
- 2:37:11Speaker 4: It just doesn't, I don't know.
- 2:37:13Speaker 11: Every time I watch an NFL London game, it doesn't
- 2:37:15Speaker 11: feel like the crowds all that into it. I mean,
- 2:37:18Speaker 11: the NBA as a result of the dream team in 92,
- 2:37:22Speaker 11: of course, Gordy would tell you more, more than anybody
- 2:37:24Speaker 11: has created this cultural footprint that almost allows them to
- 2:37:29Speaker 11: ignore their domestic issues, which irritates me. If I just
- 2:37:34Speaker 11: don't know that American football moves the needle internationally, but
- 2:37:39Speaker 11: it's surprising that that many international players have put in
- 2:37:42Speaker 11: the league, you know, it would change it. If some
- 2:37:43Speaker 11: like Brit became an awesome quarterback.
- 2:37:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:37:46Speaker 8: Right.
- 2:37:47Speaker 3: You know, I, it's, I think that one thing that
- 2:37:49Speaker 3: the NFL probably, probably won't get the kind of viewership
- 2:37:56Speaker 3: they won't, they won't get the money from foreign countries.
- 2:38:01Speaker 1: I think they're going to get the players though.
- 2:38:03Speaker 3: I think that the talent pipeline, when you go to
- 2:38:07Speaker 3: some of these, you know, far flung nations, when you
- 2:38:10Speaker 3: go to Eastern Europe and you get those guys and
- 2:38:12Speaker 3: you're just like, look, man, I know you wanted to
- 2:38:14Speaker 3: be an Olympian and water polo, but you're six foot
- 2:38:17Speaker 3: seven and 235 pounds and you're 14 years old.
- 2:38:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:38:21Speaker 3: Come to the United States. Let us teach you how
- 2:38:23Speaker 3: to be a tight end and watch what happens for you.
- 2:38:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:38:26Speaker 3: I think you're going to get a lot of that.
- 2:38:27Speaker 3: I think that they've tapped into the African market now
- 2:38:29Speaker 3: in the West African nations that have just these. Big,
- 2:38:33Speaker 3: big athletes. I mean, we're seeing the same thing in
- 2:38:35Speaker 3: combat sports. So I think that while the NFL is
- 2:38:38Speaker 3: probably going to have a hard time capturing the international dollar,
- 2:38:42Speaker 3: I think that the international talent is going to want
- 2:38:44Speaker 3: to capture the NFL dollar. And so they will develop
- 2:38:48Speaker 3: themselves into players.
- 2:38:49Speaker 11: And that could change the whole ecosystem because Yao Ming
- 2:38:53Speaker 11: changed everything for the NBA in their relationship with China.
- 2:38:56Speaker 11: Ask Daryl Morey. They're so protective of the revenue stream
- 2:39:01Speaker 11: that China is. As a result of them all being
- 2:39:04Speaker 11: big basketball fans, that never would have happened if Yao
- 2:39:06Speaker 11: was a Yao.
- 2:39:08Speaker 1: Only one Chinese player on an NBA roster this.
- 2:39:11Speaker 11: Year so far. Surprising that we didn't see more of
- 2:39:14Speaker 11: an influx after Yao Ming. But yeah, the Yao thing.
- 2:39:18Speaker 11: And there's an interesting documentary on the NBA Africa project
- 2:39:22Speaker 11: right now where coaches are like, there are 12 LeBron
- 2:39:25Speaker 11: James in this league. Just 6'8, 250, massive athletes.
- 2:39:30Speaker 4: We'll see if that... translates into skill sets.
- 2:39:34Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:39:34Speaker 3: Stay tuned for the drive. Thanks for listening to the
- 2:39:36Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell show. We'll do it again tomorrow on ESPN
- 2:39:38Speaker 3: 700 and 92 on FM.
