Speaker 1: Chapter twenty three, Pinocchio weeps upon learning that the lovely
• 0:04
Speaker 1: maiden with azure hair is dead. He meets a pigeon
• 0:08
Speaker 1: who carries him to the sea shore. He throws himself
• 0:11
Speaker 1: into the sea to go to the aid of his father.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: As soon as Pinocchio no longer felt the shameful weight
• 0:19
Speaker 1: of the dog collar around his neck, he started to
• 0:22
Speaker 1: run across the fields and meadows, and never stopped till
• 0:25
Speaker 1: he came to the main road that was to take
• 0:27
Speaker 1: him to the fairy's house. When he reached it, he
• 0:33
Speaker 1: looked into the valley far below him, and there he
• 0:35
Speaker 1: saw the wood where unluckily he had met the fox
• 0:39
Speaker 1: and the cat, and the tall oak tree where he
• 0:42
Speaker 1: had been hanged. And though he searched far and near,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: he could not see the house where the fairy with
• 0:49
Speaker 1: the azure hare lived. He became terribly frightened, and running
• 0:54
Speaker 1: as fast as he could, he finally came to the
• 0:57
Speaker 1: spot where it had once stood. The little house was
• 1:00
Speaker 1: no longer. There in its place lay a small marble
• 1:03
Speaker 1: slab which bore this sad inscription. Here lies the lovely
• 1:11
Speaker 1: fairy with azure hair, who died of grief when abandoned
• 1:16
Speaker 1: by her little brother Pinocchio. The poor Marionette was heart
• 1:22
Speaker 1: broken at reading these words. He fell to the ground, and,
• 1:27
Speaker 1: covering the cold marble with kisses, burst into bitter tears.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: He cried all night, and dawn found him still there,
• 1:37
Speaker 1: though his tears had dried, and only hard, dry sobs
• 1:42
Speaker 1: shook his wooden frame. But these were so loud that
• 1:46
Speaker 1: they could be heard by the far away hills. As
• 1:49
Speaker 1: he sobbed, he said to himself, Oh, my fairy, My
• 1:54
Speaker 1: dear dear fairy, why did you die? Why did I
• 1:59
Speaker 1: not die? Who am so bad instead of you? Who
• 2:03
Speaker 1: are so good? And my father where can he be? Please,
• 2:08
Speaker 1: dear fairy, tell me where he is, and I shall
• 2:10
Speaker 1: never never leave him again. You are not really dead,
• 2:16
Speaker 1: are you. If you love me, you will come back
• 2:19
Speaker 1: alive as before. Don't you feel sorry for me? I'm
• 2:24
Speaker 1: so lonely. If the two assassins come, they'll hang me
• 2:28
Speaker 1: again from the giant oak tree, and I will really
• 2:31
Speaker 1: die this time. What shall I do alone in the
• 2:34
Speaker 1: world now that you are dead and my father is lost?
• 2:38
Speaker 1: Where shall I eat? Where shall I sleep? Who will
• 2:42
Speaker 1: make my new clothes? Oh? I want to die? Yes,
• 2:47
Speaker 1: I want to die. Oh, oh, oh, poor Pinocchio. He
• 2:54
Speaker 1: even tried to tear his hair, but as it was
• 2:57
Speaker 1: only painted on his wooden head, he could not even
• 3:00
Speaker 1: pull it. Just then, a large pigeon flew far above him.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: Seeing the marionette, he cried to him. Tell me, little boy,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: what are you doing down there? Can't you see I'm crying?
• 3:15
Speaker 1: Cried Pinocchio, lifting his head toward the voice and rubbing
• 3:19
Speaker 1: his eyes with his sleeve. Tell me, asked the pigeon.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: Do you by chance know of a marionette Pinocchio by
• 3:27
Speaker 1: name Pinocchio? Did you say? Pinocchio replied the marionette, jumping
• 3:32
Speaker 1: to his feet, Why I am Pinocchio. At this answer,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: the pigeon flew swiftly down to the earth. He was
• 3:40
Speaker 1: much larger than a turkey. Then you know Geppetto also,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Do I know him? He's my father, my poor dear father.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: Has he perhaps spoken to you of me? Will you
• 3:53
Speaker 1: take me to him? Is he still alive? Answer me, please?
• 3:58
Speaker 1: Is he still alive? I left him three days ago
• 4:01
Speaker 1: on the shore of a large sea. What was he doing?
• 4:06
Speaker 1: He was building a little boat with which to cross
• 4:09
Speaker 1: the ocean. For the last four months, that poor man
• 4:12
Speaker 1: has been wandering around Europe looking for you, not having
• 4:16
Speaker 1: found you yet, he has made up his mind to
• 4:18
Speaker 1: look for you in the New World, far across the ocean.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: How far is it from here to the shore, asked
• 4:27
Speaker 1: Pinocchio anxiously, more than fifty miles? Fifty miles, Oh, dear pigeon,
• 4:36
Speaker 1: How I wish I had your wings. If you want
• 4:39
Speaker 1: to come, I'll take you with me. How astride my back?
• 4:44
Speaker 1: Are you very heavy? Heavy? Not at all, I'm only
• 4:48
Speaker 1: a feather, very well. Saying nothing more, Pinocchio jumped on
• 4:53
Speaker 1: the pigeon's back, and as he settled himself, he cried out, gaily, gallupon, gallopon,
• 5:00
Speaker 1: my pretty steed. I am in a great hurry. The
• 5:03
Speaker 1: pigeon flew away, and in a few minutes he had
• 5:05
Speaker 1: reached the clouds. The marionette looked to see what was
• 5:09
Speaker 1: below him. His head swam, and he was so frightened
• 5:13
Speaker 1: that he clutched wildly at the pigeon's neck to keep
• 5:16
Speaker 1: himself from falling. They flew all day. Toward evening, the
• 5:21
Speaker 1: pigeon said, I'm very thirsty, and I'm very hungry, said Pinocchio.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: Let us stop a few minutes at that pigeon coop
• 5:31
Speaker 1: down there, then we can go on and be at
• 5:34
Speaker 1: the sea shore in the morning. They went into the
• 5:37
Speaker 1: empty coop, and there they found nothing but a bowl
• 5:40
Speaker 1: of water and a small basket filled with chickpeas. The
• 5:44
Speaker 1: marionette had always hated chickpeas. According to him, they had
• 5:49
Speaker 1: always made him sick, but that night he ate them
• 5:53
Speaker 1: with a relish. As he finished them, he turned to
• 5:56
Speaker 1: the pigeon and said, I never should have thought that
• 6:00
Speaker 1: chickpeas could be so good. You must remember, my boy,
• 6:05
Speaker 1: answered the pigeon that hunger is the best sauce. After
• 6:10
Speaker 1: resting a few minutes longer, they set out again. The
• 6:13
Speaker 1: next morning they were at the sea shore. Pinocchio jumped
• 6:17
Speaker 1: off the pigeon's back, and the pigeon, not wanting any
• 6:21
Speaker 1: thanks for a kind deed, flew away swiftly and disappeared.
• 6:27
Speaker 1: The shore was full of people shrieking and tearing their
• 6:30
Speaker 1: hair as they looked toward the sea. What has happened,
• 6:34
Speaker 1: asked Pinocchio of a little old woman. A poor old
• 6:39
Speaker 1: father lost his only son some time ago, and to
• 6:44
Speaker 1: day he built a tiny boat for himself in order
• 6:49
Speaker 1: to go in search of him across the ocean. The
• 6:53
Speaker 1: water is very rough, and we are afraid he will
• 6:57
Speaker 1: be drowned. Where is the little boat there? Straight down there,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: answered the little old woman, pointing to a tiny shadow,
• 7:08
Speaker 1: no bigger than a nutshell, floating on the sea. Pinocchio
• 7:13
Speaker 1: looked closely for a few minutes, and then gave a
• 7:16
Speaker 1: sharp cry, it's my father, it's my father. Meanwhile, the
• 7:20
Speaker 1: little boat, tossed about by the hungry waters, appeared and
• 7:24
Speaker 1: disappeared in the waves, and Pinocchio, standing on a high rock,
• 7:29
Speaker 1: tired out with searching, waved to him with hand and cap,
• 7:33
Speaker 1: and even with his nose. It looked as if Geppetto,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: though far away from the shore, recognized his son, for
• 7:40
Speaker 1: he took off his cap and waved also. He seemed
• 7:44
Speaker 1: to be trying to make everyone understand that he would
• 7:47
Speaker 1: come back if he were able, but the sea was
• 7:50
Speaker 1: so heavy that he could do nothing with his oars. Suddenly,
• 7:55
Speaker 1: a huge wave came and the boat disappeared. They waited
• 8:00
Speaker 1: and waited for it, but it was gone, poor man,
• 8:06
Speaker 1: said the fisherfolk on the shore, whispering a prayer as
• 8:09
Speaker 1: they turned to go home. Just then, a desperate cry
• 8:13
Speaker 1: was heard. Turning around. The fisherfolk saw Pinocchio dive into
• 8:18
Speaker 1: the sea and heard him cry out, I'll save him,
• 8:23
Speaker 1: I'll save my father. The marionette, being made of wood,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: floated easily along and swam like a fish in the
• 8:31
Speaker 1: rough water. Now and again he disappeared, only to reappear
• 8:34
Speaker 1: once more. In a twinkling. He was far away from land.
• 8:38
Speaker 1: At last he was completely lost to view. Poor boy,
• 8:43
Speaker 1: cried the fisherfolk on the shore, and again they mumbled
• 8:46
Speaker 1: a few prayers as they returned home. End of Chapter
• 8:51
  Speaker 1: twenty three.
