- 0:00Speaker 1: But we know that there has been a very serious
- 0:04Speaker 1: incident take place in Catherine.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yesterday morning, just after.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Eleven o'clock, we had let you know that we had
- 0:11Speaker 1: certainly been receiving some information that there'd been an incident
- 0:14Speaker 1: take place about thirty kilometers away from Catherine. What we
- 0:19Speaker 1: now know is that the Northern Territory Police are maintaining
- 0:21Speaker 1: this cordon at the gates of Cuttercutter Caves after homicide
- 0:25Speaker 1: squads on Thursday took over a home in the area
- 0:28Speaker 1: following a fatal shooting. Two police officers remain stationed at
- 0:32Speaker 1: that gate. According to the Northern Territory News and Police
- 0:36Speaker 1: Detective Senior Sergeant Jackson Evans has confirmed that a thirty
- 0:39Speaker 1: six year old man was in custody and his home
- 0:43Speaker 1: has been turned into a crime scene after another man
- 0:45Speaker 1: was shot at the home. Sergeant Evans said that officers
- 0:49Speaker 1: were investigating if the thirty six year old used lethal
- 0:52Speaker 1: force to shoot at a reported intruder in the early
- 0:55Speaker 1: hours of Thursday morning. Now joining us on the line, obviously,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you know, unable to talk about what exactly has gone on,
- 1:03Speaker 1: but the feeling among the community of Catherine at the
- 1:06Speaker 1: moment is the CLPS member for Catherine, Joe Hersey.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Joe, Good.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Morning Katy, and good morning istener Joe.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I know that there is still a lot that we
- 1:17Speaker 1: do not know at this point in time, and we
- 1:19Speaker 1: certainly don't want to try and do the job of
- 1:21Speaker 1: the police and you know, release any information that we're
- 1:25Speaker 1: incorrect about all that detail that's still flowing through. But
- 1:28Speaker 1: what is the feeling in Catherine today?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks Katie. It's people that I've spoken to are
- 1:37Speaker 3: in shops that this has happened, you know, so close
- 1:40Speaker 3: to the finish of the trial we've just had. Some
- 1:44Speaker 3: people haven't actually heard about it, but the people that
- 1:48Speaker 3: I've spoken to that have, Yeah, that people are just
- 1:50Speaker 3: in shocked, but that it's happened here.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I know there is so much details still that remains unknown,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and it's so close obviously to to a tourist attraction.
- 2:02Speaker 2: They're the Cutter Cutter Caves.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, correct, Katie, And as you are probably aware, it's
- 2:08Speaker 3: a very close knit community here in Catherine. So the
- 2:12Speaker 3: fact that you know this has happened, people do know
- 2:16Speaker 3: the the the people that are involved, and you know,
- 2:21Speaker 3: my thoughts are to them and their their families. I think,
- 2:25Speaker 3: you know, with an active police going investigation going on,
- 2:29Speaker 3: it will be interesting to know and hear from the
- 2:32Speaker 3: police exactly what has happened in this situation.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And Joe, are you hearing at this point in time,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know, when there is going to be any further
- 2:40Speaker 1: detail released or or if anybody has been charged or anything.
- 2:47Speaker 3: No, No, the the uh, the person that did the
- 2:52Speaker 3: shooting is still reminded. I have been contacted by the
- 2:56Speaker 3: Catherine Police station and given a bit of a briefing
- 2:59Speaker 3: on what happened, but you know, they just said they'll
- 3:02Speaker 3: be so getting contact with me when they have more details.
- 3:05Speaker 3: But obviously this was last night I heard from them,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and you know, not much had come to light at
- 3:12Speaker 3: that point in time.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Joe, is there any concern at this point that there's
- 3:16Speaker 1: going to be unreased in the community in light of
- 3:18Speaker 1: this incident?
- 3:21Speaker 3: No, I don't think so, Katie. It was a fairly
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know, I didn't hear of anything that sort of
- 3:26Speaker 3: went on last night and the police weren't concerned that
- 3:30Speaker 3: there was going to be any unrest, so which is
- 3:33Speaker 3: a good thing for the community.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Absolutely well, Joe, we appreciate you having a chat with
- 3:37Speaker 1: us this morning. I know that both you and I
- 3:39Speaker 1: are obviously being pretty careful what we say here, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: you know I don't want to say the wrong thing,
- 3:44Speaker 1: given it is such a serious situation, but we appreciate
- 3:47Speaker 1: you letting us know how the community is going at
- 3:49Speaker 1: this point.
- 3:51Speaker 3: No worries, Katie. Great to talk to you.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Thank you.
