- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Having trouble connecting?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, we're live.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't have been the first person to support.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Let's wait until we have about 50 people in.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Wow, that didn't take long at all.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Welcome, everyone.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Shuffle in.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Take your seats.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We're just about to kick off.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Yes, wow.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: A lot of people.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: It's always in these things you realize how bad your posture is.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I lean over a drawing board all day.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: All right, let's kick off.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: We're only going to be here for 35 odd minutes today.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: So we're going to get started.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Welcome, everyone.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: This is our official virtual Substack book launch.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: We did it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: We birthed a book.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: It's a book called You're Not a Real Parent Until.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: It's out today.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Buy from all good book retailers.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: And a few bad ones.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: A few bad ones, actually.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: There's some very rude stuff.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: You'll get past that.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: We're going to share
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: with you today.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: We're going to be giving away a free copy of the book to one lucky viewer,
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: but also we're going to be talking about the process of the book
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: and something interesting that we're doing with it today.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, this has been a long time coming.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I'm Scott.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, by the way, I'm Jason.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I guess we made a book together.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Just before we start, Jason and I have had a podcast for however many years now.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Never once have we had a rundown.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: This is the most incredible quality paper.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: I feel like.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I'm a nerd for this.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: It's real.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Like.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it feels like you're a newscast.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Doesn't it?
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: On a desk going, we'll be right back.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: More
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: after this.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: As things develop, we'll give you more information.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm a demon for a good piece of paper.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: It changes everything.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Has anyone ever had a paper cut so bad that it requires stitches?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I bet they have.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I bet they have.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Because you know when you're opening like Amazon boxes?
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I've heard of it.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: I imagine that's a workplace injury.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what we've got right there.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: These are the injuries that you get as a cartoonist that no one really talks about.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I read some about footballers.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Everyone knows about Caitlin Clark's hamstring.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: What about Jason got a paper cut once?
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: And his skin is so soft, it left a single callous.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Now, today, the book is out.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: This book took a long time to write.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I know what you're thinking.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I'm not a parent, so how did I write a book about parenting?
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: This guy is a parent, parent of a two-year-old boy.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Who we, if you open the book, you will see it is dedicated to...
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: To Leo.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: To your son, Leo.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: To his little boy.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Technically it was for Messi, but we tell him.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I was just going through this whole Barcelona thing at the time.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: The book is a look at parenting from babies to toddlers to tweens to teens
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: to all grown up, all the whole mess.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And each of them, the format is you're not a real parent until, and then the gag is underneath.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: For instance,
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: this one,
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: A Clean Shirt is the one with the least amount of These gags we sat
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: and wrote together over the course of quite a long time.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: This was our first book.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: We did this one first.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: This was the first one.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Have you explained kind of the genesis of this series?
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Because we've also got, you know, a real dog owner.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: We've got, you know, a real New Yorker coming out at some juncture.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Next year, you're not a real New Yorker.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: This one's the best one.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: They bought this a while ago.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: This is a follow-up to the hit book, You're Not a Real Dog.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: To the award-winning.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Award-winning book,
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: You're Not a Real Dog.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: One of the saddest speeches for a comedy...
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I want to talk to you,
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: I want to talk to all of you about
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: what we're doing with this because traditionally,
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: When you put a book out,
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: you do press,
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: you do podcasts,
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: TV, radio, guest articles, you have reviews, you have people doing it.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: None of that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: We've done none of that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Before we start,
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I just want to make it clear that what we're planning on trying with this and
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: the promotion of this book isn't one of these things where people are like,
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: hey, it's always been my dream to be a New York Times bestseller.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: And this is where you come into it.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: You know those things, it's essentially GoFundMe with extra steps.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: That's exactly right.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: It's just not necessary.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: But what we've done is,
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: and we've been speaking to a whole bunch of our friends who have released books and
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: through all these different ones,
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: either with huge publishers or people that are just self-publishing
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: and printing these things themselves and stuff,
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: there is no kind of surefire marketing thing.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Like nothing, it's not that nothing's working.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: It's just that there, well, I mean, nothing's working.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Nothing's working, yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: But what we thought is because we wanted to see and then document for you,
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: should you have a book or something to promote, how effective Substack can be.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: So we're going to keep it within this walled garden, essentially.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: It will hopefully seep out because that would be a terrible marketing strategy.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Someone's trying to buy, hey, wait till you hear about this.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: If it wasn't Substack, you're not allowed.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: But yeah,
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: hopefully using the power of something like Substack,
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: which is not an algorithmically driven,
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: outside of notes, not an algorithmically driven thing.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: It's opt-in.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: It's people who signed up to hear from us about the things we're making.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: So Scott has a Substack.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: I have a Substack.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: You're watching both of them right now.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And we want to be able to just connect with humans and actually...
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's not, it's not all altruistic.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And we do a regular podcast about coming up with ideas for cartoons.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: And we like to kind of peel back the curtain a little bit and sort of just explain
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: the back end of how we arrived at our jokes and our ideas.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: So we figured, why don't we just share that and the process of making the book?
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: We should point out that we have not cleared this with our publishers.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: This experiment may be career limiting,
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: but we want, I'm really keen to kind of document this and kind of see what happens.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: And I think Substack is, and you're way bigger.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: I'd started writing a whole bunch of stupid jokes.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: It's what you do, the
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: sizes and whatnot, yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: But you're a very active member and one of the things that I've taken out is
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: that there is a real community and like we're seeing people saying nice things here.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: So we just want to kind of see how that is and I think we're also at this good place
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: where to be real,
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: we're like lower to like middle rung kind of In terms of like,
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: you know, yeah,
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: we do stuff for the New Yorker,
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: but we're not like,
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: we don't have like 400,000 Instagram followers and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of, that's the long and the short of it.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: So, and I think the thing about it is, is that now...
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: We have friends who,
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: and I've spoken to a lot of them recently who have books out,
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: who have literally a million followers on social media,
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: on Facebook and Instagram or TikTok, whatever it is.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: And as soon as they have something to sell, the algorithm shadow bans it.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: It suppresses their posts.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Anytime they link off-site,
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: anytime they mention a book or a thing or a course that they're selling on socials.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: It's like with you when you talk about women.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I just get shadow banned and ghosted.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Hey, did you see all the bots...
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, when the Ukrainians hit the Russian bot farm.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: And have you seen the change in the comment sections and the
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: amount
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: of engagement
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: for certain people?
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: It's really interesting.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, interesting how as soon as you kill the bot,
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: certain people don't really have much engagement.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: What do you know?
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Mind you.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: I shouldn't say this because I'm married, but my girlfriend died in that explosion.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: I've been sending her money for years.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Every time she gets to the airport, something goes wrong with her car.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: So I just send her $1,500.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: She'll get the next flight.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: It's just countdown to when we talk about AR girlfriends with this guy.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: So what I wanted to do is share with you what Scott- Well, you won't draw me one.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: That's a really funny idea.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Like an analog scan where
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: you draw a beautiful lady.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Like a 1950s comic strip.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Like a Betty Page.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Like Betty Boop.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: It's like very clearly not a real person.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Betty Boop.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, can you please Venmo me?
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: So speaking of that,
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: not at all,
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: we sat down when we had to write this book,
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: we sat down and we were like,
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: all right, who is this for and how are we going to build out this idea?
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Because the whole spectrum.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: There's a threat in this book.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: We went a little above and beyond on this one.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: And by we, I mean this fucking guy.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: He truly, there's a death in the book.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: And then there's a meeting of two widows and widows and they end up getting together at the end.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: It's just through the gags as time goes on.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: But cause why not?
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Um, So we kind of built out these characters, gave them names, figured out who their kids were.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: And this whole book was done by hand.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: We drew every single thing, pencil, pen, like pen and ink, dip pen and ink, and then colored it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: We did hire a colorist on this book, Naya Mohika, fantastic colorist.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: If you ever want a colorist, I'm an idiot.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: It's the first time I've ever used a colorist in my life.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: And I'm so grateful that I found Naya because she's incredible.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Well, this is an example of the Substack thing as well.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: If you're a colorist, get in touch.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: We've got another book coming out, which is going to be black and white, admittedly.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: It's got to cover, though.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Prove us wrong.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: It's got to cover.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: So the whole process of building these
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: gags out, building out the ideas,
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: building out the families,
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: and this is one of the press proofs that we get speaking of good paper.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Make sure color is really good and sort of is reflective.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Can you explain
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: just what these things are?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: So the cyan,
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: magenta,
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: yellow and black that the printing is done on, these are the inks that are used.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: So these are the mixes of the inks and what the CMYK breakdown is of each one,
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: as well as any spot colors.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: We used a matte finish paper because it sort of...
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: It doesn't,
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: it's not too reflective and it still makes the colour pop without looking too shiny
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: or, you know, sort of glossy and weird.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: It feels like an art book is what it feels like.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: And so we were really, really happy.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Wazala printed this book.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Wazala is an American company, I believe.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: But yeah,
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: we really went above and beyond to sort of try and make sure that the quality
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: the book.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Do we get to say that?
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I think we do.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: I think we do.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: So like after giving like a loved one a gift, I went above and beyond on this one.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: We did.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: We did.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Put the socks on.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: This is one.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: You're not a real parent until despite all evidence to the contrary,
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: you're convinced your child has above average intelligence.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: That's me.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: That is 100% me.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Because you have a kid that, you know, you have been withdrawn a lot of experience from this.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: Scott's kid is actually in the book.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Scott and his wife and his kid are in this book.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: You can see them in there.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: There are several gags.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: I'm the guy that dies.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's the guy that dies.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Because why not?
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Because why not do that?
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: But so what's this one?
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: You're not a real parent until you remember when hearing someone say,
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: it's your turn and something good was about to happen.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: Turn in bed.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Was that one of
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: the ones?
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: We had a couple that the publisher...
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: So when you do these things, you hand in like the thing you like.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: We start off with a spreadsheet of where I will write like 300,
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: 400 jokes about with all the same premise, the same setup.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: You're not a real parent until... And then I write the punchline.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: One of the rods for our back was...
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Um, not having everyone start with the word you,
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: you're not a real whatever until you, and it just becomes a bit samey.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: So that was one of the things.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: And then we would sit down and have a conversation and we'd have a series
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: of meetings, um,
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: at various
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: bars around Manhattan about,
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: okay, so here's the joke, let's do the wording.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: What do we think the image should look like?
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: And so I think that was, there was two that,
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they pushed back
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: on.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: One of them was the nipple latching or something.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, something about latching.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: No problem with nipple latching.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we had to change something.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: It was a bit nipply.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: It was a bit nipply.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Speaking of nipply.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, go on.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: It's a place in Italy.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Go on.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Friends, like a rerun of Friends.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Just pay attention to how nipply that show is.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, my God.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: It is quite a stark kind of thing.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: We've already gone to nipples on this show, which is, it's a record for us, I think.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Some of the ones that, so we've seen there.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: How many fake Jennifer Aniston's got blown up?
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: A Ukrainian drone story.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Unless you fake Jennifer Aniston.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I can't, but.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: It's weird.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Once he gets onto a topic, that's it.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Especially if it's Jennifer Aniston's lip.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Truly.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So we sent out a whole bunch of these books to real parents a while back, got feedback.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: We never really know what's going to hit.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: We put a whole bunch of jokes out.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: We hope that they hit.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: We never know which one's going to resonate the most with people.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: This one in particular,
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: you're not a real parent until the longest thing you can do is listen
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: to your child's quick story.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: For some reason, a lot of people are coming and saying, that's me.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: That is 100% me.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Do you think there's a part of it that is like,
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: I would love to be able to say that to my kid, but I don't want to damage them.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Thank goodness you have, because that was the
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: boringest thing ever.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: A lot of unsaid things.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: So we had to change this one.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: No latching trouble for her.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I was just about to say, your relationship with Nipples has taken a dramatic turn.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: We played with different wording, the word breast.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: The imagery was
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: interesting as well.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I remember we did a number of,
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: like I didn't even ask you to, but you did a lot of topless women drawings.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: True.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Listen, I do my research.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: This is how that gag ended up in the book, by the way.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: When hearing someone say, it's your turn in bed, meant something good was about to happen.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: I love the detail you've got in this.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: And any parent will probably attest to this.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: There's just always something.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: I've gotten to the point now in my house where I will walk past stuff that's just on the floor.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: You know that I am the standard of...
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: And so I've got a thing where if I have to step up like I'm getting up on a gutter,
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: then I've got to pick it up.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: But anything else, if it's a pen, that stays there.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it stays there.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: It's just going to end up back there anyway.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: That's where that lives now.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: This is why you've done the math and you're certain you could afford a Ferrari
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: if you were childless.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: That was a fun one to draw.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: That was a fun one to draw.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: We tried to figure out how we were going to show that idea.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: One of the ones that really hit,
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: and this is,
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Jermaine,
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: to what you were talking about just now,
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: someone having a tidy house has become a personal attack.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: I 100% subscribe to that.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: This is one of the ones that everyone who picks up the book is going,
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: yeah, absolutely, then snaps it shut and buys two copies for everyone.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: If you want to buy a copy,
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: by the way,
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: we probably should have said this,
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: yourenotareal.com, as in Y-O-U-R-E, yourenotareal.com is where you can pick it up.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: There's one which is Y-O-U-R, not a real, but that's for dum-dum.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: It's just all the pictures where you got rid of the words because you don't know it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: There's no more terrifying sound in the world than Silence was this game.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: I've got a new one for that now,
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: which is,
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: so my kid's now at the age where he,
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: like we leave him in a place to play by himself,
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: but we kind of keep checking,
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: but we like to give him his own space because he's got this like imagination.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: And one of the things that is just this,
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: just bone chilling is just,
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: you'll just hear like a thump
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: and then just apropos of nothing.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: And then.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I'm okay.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: That's so great.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Dear viewer, he is never okay.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: I'm okay.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Or just out of nowhere, you only hear a noise sometimes.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: I'm all right.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Wait, what happened to me?
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: I didn't ask you.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Why was that an option, not being
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: all right?
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Is this one that you've noticed as well?
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: So I think this was, you can't remember what it's like being alone in the bathroom.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: This is the ink sketch on this one.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: And this is how it turned out in the book.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: This is another one that a lot of people seem to relate to, which is, yeah, just...
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: In the spirit of just openness here as we're going to launch this experiment
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: where we promote this book exclusively on Substack and all that stuff,
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I'm going to let you in.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I now pee sitting down.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Because my son is potty training and he will barge into the room.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: And he saw me peeing in the traditional, what
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: we call stand-up.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you know peeing like we do.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: You're a stand-up peer.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: I'm a stand-up peer.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: And he thought, I should have a go at that.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Well, let me tell you.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: I've seen.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: It was like a fireman that just had too much choice.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Right, right, right.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: That's very funny.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: That's very funny.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: This is my favorite joke.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: This is my favorite image in the book.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: This is the aforementioned death in the book.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: You're not a real parent until it's easier to let them dress themselves and explain dress codes.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: We've got a little boy in the Spider-Man costume at a funeral.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: So this is the character who died.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, no spoilers.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and this is the husband over here who will come back later on as a widower.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: She's making a move.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: She's like Janice in The
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Sopranos.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: When Poppy Vaclavar's wife died.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Again, spoiler alert.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, she's going to bring some ZD over later.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, don't even get me started when she had thawed out that bloody ZD.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: She really did.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: So we built out these characters and the kids, this is the widower Todd here.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: This is the poor old widower.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And this is Dominic and Karen's boy, Sid.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: We built out the characters so that They kind of fit the different parents,
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: the different styles of parenting because everyone has a different way of parenting.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: But the overarching thing of the book is there is no one hard and fast way to be a parent.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: There's no correct for everything, for every scenario.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So it's the guilt about not doing something right or doing something the way
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: that it is now expected to be done.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: We wanted to kind of give everyone the feeling that A,
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: they're not alone and B, it's okay if you don't do everything perfectly.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Everyone's just figuring this out as they go.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: And not everyone's like a perfect parent.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: You don't have to be a perfect parent.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: You can try your best.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: But yeah, this is the overarching ethos of the book that we had.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Would you say?
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm very new to it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: It's funny.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: The people that are the most outspoken about what bad parenting looks like,
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: in my experience, don't
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: have children.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, of course.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: And it's like getting advice.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Like everyone stacks the dishwasher wrong compared to you.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: But if someone who didn't own a dishwasher started telling me where to put
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: the spoons,
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: You're like, all right.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: It's a little going.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: That's a perfect analogy.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Dishwashing, having a dishwasher, and a child.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Those are the exact same.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: I also suggest if you have a child, get a dishwasher.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe I should do parenting tips.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: You should do parenting tips.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: But it's just really like just dumb.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Don't let them drown.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: That's the whole thing.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: It's like a PSA.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: See you next week, America.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Don't let them drown.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: We'll see you.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: How's this guy come up with this stuff?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: So we wanted to kind of throw it over to you guys because there is,
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: where's Scott's black tee is a question.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: You call me fat, darling?
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: It's spy versus spy over here.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: This is the uniform.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: I normally
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: wear the
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: black.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: So we want to throw it over to you.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: We want to get some real parenting examples,
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: like you're not a real parent until,
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: and then have you fill out in the chat right now some of these very,
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: very specific things.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: And if you would like to,
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: this isn't mandatory,
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: if you would like to,
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: and you're wearing pants and you're not naked,
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: we can add you to the stream as well, live, to talk about this.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: And for the best one, we are going to send you a free signed copy of the book.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: So in the chat right now, the prompt is, You're not a real parent until what?
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: We did this with you're not a real New Yorker until... Well, you do it in stand-up.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: I'm still doing it on stage.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Didn't you have one really specific, which was almost a catalyst for the whole series?
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: What was it?
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: You're not a real New Yorker until you see an NYU student get hit by a car.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: She was
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: like, is that... Is that one?
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: That's a crime.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: That's a crime.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: She's the one who...
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: She goes, hey, just be
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: quiet about the car thing.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: I was driving.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: I don't know why I keep telling people this.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: We, there was a girl after the show saying,
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: you know, it was after the building nearly fell down in Midtown.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: There was like.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, my God.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: It was so crazy.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: That just building really collapsed.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: That just doesn't happen here.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: And I just kind of went quiet for a minute.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that's kind of the only place that happens.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: That's kind of a thing.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: She was new to town.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, please don't say that to anyone else.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: So we got in the chat.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: Imagine that was one of, like, there was a city.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: It's like, yeah, it's great, but the building's always full.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: If you can tolerate that, you're going to love it.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Rent is cheap.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: I'll give you that.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: So do we have,
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: by the way,
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: if I just show hands,
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: who in the chat, we've got a big bunch of people here, 72 people watching.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: What is, how many people aren't parents?
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Just by a show of,
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: just say me or something,
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: or how many kids you've got in chat so that we can sort of see,
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: get a sense of who's here.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Samantha Dion Baker, hi, I see you.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Bucky Jones, I know you've got two kids.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: And Sam, I know you've got kids.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: And Amy and Derek, John.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: We're getting into children's television.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: And I see Derek.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: I see you.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: We're, yeah.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: So we are, by the way, this is a, this was another one.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: This too shall pass has been said in reference to something a child has swallowed.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: That was another one actually that they pushed back
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: on a little bit.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: They're like, that's right.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: It's a poo joke.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: But you know.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Darlene, you have three daughters and now three grandchildren.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Congratulations.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a lot.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: That's a lot of work.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Three daughters and three grandchildren.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: So you must have been in the all grown up section.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: You must have been through the...
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: They'll come to you for advice that will be completely ignored.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: That is the parents of all grown up children.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: This is the all grown up section.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: The graduates over here.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: So, Darlene, you're not a real parent until what?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: And stop talking about Scott's black t-shirt.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: I can get a black t-shirt sponsorship.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: By the way,
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: speaking of loading dishwashers,
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: you realize you will never stop being impressed by them doing things.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: That's my mom.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: That's loading a dishwasher correctly.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: My mom is just so impressed when I'm like, yeah, so I had to...
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: I had to get a connecting.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: You got a connecting flight.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Tom, come here.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: So proud of you.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Come here, listen to this.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, my God.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Stop what you're doing, Tom.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: So you got off the plane and then got on another plane?
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Went to a whole different airport.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Wild.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Here's one.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Sorry, we're going.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: You're not a real parent until you've reduced the time it takes to get dressed in
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: the morning from an hour to 10 minutes.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: This is the parent who is having to just obviously decide what they're going to wear.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: When ahead of time.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: That's a really good one.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: And that also falls into when leading the house,
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: multiple distractions are more important than keys.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: That's one of the other problems.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: What if the twist on that?
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: I really like that.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Everyone else, put yours in the chat as well.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: You're not a real parent until what?
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Put them in the chat.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: I love that insight.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: But I wonder if there's a twist to it, which is along the lines of like...
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: You know how musicians like Katy Perry and Lilia,
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: like those big,
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: super big pop stars like Taylor Swift, they have very quick costume changes.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Is there something in that being more relatable now because you only have... That's pretty good.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Like offstage costume changes.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Offstage costume.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: And is it something like the image could be something along the lines of like,
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: I'm just trying to think of like,
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Like, Vogue era Madonna was probably a good example of that, or Michael Jackson or something.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: And they're, like, looking really impressed at this parent who's getting ready for work.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Amazingly, yeah.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Like, one of those big sort of productions,
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: and the parent is just like... Like,
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: and Katy Perry is just mind-blown by how quickly this person can get into
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: a different set of clothes.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Katy Perry.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: This is my Katy Perry, by the way.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: She's still in her space helmet.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Got a flower.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Could you have ever predicted – I'm always interested in,
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: like, the media managers for these people.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Like, where
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: – because there
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: is a –
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: there's got to be, like,
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: a risk-reward thing for everything they do because they're so high-profile
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: and stuff like that, isn't it?
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: No.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Would you have ever imagined, like, hey, do you want to go to space?
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: It'd be a free trip.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: That'd be great.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Amazing.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: That would be such a wild experience.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: And then they sit down and,
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: okay, so, look, you could look a bit out of touch, but you're not paying for it.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's good.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: We could promote this song.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: Beautiful.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Honestly, the only people that are going to be watching it are already interested in this stuff.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: So you're not really going to alienate, pun intended.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And then you cut.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: So she goes off.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: She comes back.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Wild experience.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I don't care what you think about this.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: She went to space.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: She went to space.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: That's an incredible thing to do.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: And you come back down and the entire world is just like,
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: no, I can tell you who else was on that ship.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: It's just getting married.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: That's funny.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: I haven't really thought
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: of it.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: No, but you, yeah.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, they definitely got fired.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: They didn't get fired.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: 100% I go find them.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: Another thing I wanted to ask,
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: and this is
- 28:24again got nothing to do with our book, but
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: do you remember when at least once or twice a week someone would be breaking
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: the record as to how many bees would cover them?
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: No.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: What is your algorithm?
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Beards of bees
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: in the 90s.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Beards of bees?
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, you know what?
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: I do remember this.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: This is on the news.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: It was always on the news.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: At least once a year.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: A true story
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: about bees.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: And a man in Wollongong has set the record for most bees in the year or whatever.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: That's not a bio.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: This is... 2016 most bees.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: This is what global warming's taken from us.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: You know, when the bee beard men disappear, then the ecosystem is really in trouble.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: First they came for the men with
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: beard beards made out of bees.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: And I said nothing.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Actually, we said quite a lot.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: We literally put them on the news.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: We have said more about this topic
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: than any other
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: cartooning duo in the world.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: I'm conscious of time.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: I've only got four minutes left.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Here we go.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Rhonda has three kids,
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: two grandkids,
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: and you're not a real parent until you're perfectly fine with
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: the three-year-old's fashion choice of undies on her head as long
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: as it keeps her ears warm.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: That's wonderful.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: What's the other one there?
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: You're not a real parent until you're forced to take your two-year-old to your gynecologist.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I keep being like,
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: In the stirrups and the kid there and the mum is saying, you know, this is your fault.
- 29:59Yes.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Well, this is...
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: I don't really like that joke.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I think it's a bit, it's inherently sexist.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: This is a pair of Y-fronts on a kid.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: But of course, with the Y-fronts, because of where the holes are, the ears stick out.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: So they're going to be cold.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: That's the thing that's going to be the problem with wearing Y-fronts on your head.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: It's not... You're more a boxer guy.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Imagine, yeah, oh,
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: if you have the boxer briefs that way,
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: it's actually all going to get covered and it can be okay.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: That's pretty good, actually.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: That works.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Get in the car.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: You'll look fine.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: You just want to hope that they're... Is there something in the... That they're a clean pair.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Is there... Those skid marks.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: Is there something in, like...
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: There's two kids with that, and the posh kid is wearing Calvins on their head.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Must be nice.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, must be nice.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Always rubbing it in our faces.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Literally.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, rich dad, poor dad.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's funny.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Draw me a bee, says Tracy.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Make me a bicycle clown.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is a bee.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: This is my bee.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: I have perfected the B across decades.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: That's my B.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: That's, I mean, that's as good as it gets.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: That's a B minus.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: It's just turned into a B movie.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: What's in your water?
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: This is straight gin.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: These are great solutions.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: I have an announcement to make.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: I didn't even check with Scott.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: All three of you are getting a copy of this book.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Darlene, Rhonda, and Tell MC, you're all getting a copy of Your Not A Word.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Congratulations.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: The book is yours.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: I'm going to reach out to you individually to get your postal address or PO box,
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: whatever you're comfortable sharing with a couple of strange men who draw children
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: with underwear on there.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: We now know where you live.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: If you would like to pick up the book,
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: we obviously wherever you pick up a bookshop.org is the best because
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: that supports your local bookstores and not the giant evil conglomerates.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: But however, if you do want to go to them, please do it.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: You can go to space.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: You will be hated when you're there.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: You will be hated.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Just warning you now, you will be hated.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: You're Bob Karub Mayer.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: So congratulations, Rhonda and Darlene.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And I should get, I will get the name of Tel MC as well.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: Thank you for tuning in.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: This is going to be an ongoing experiment.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, should we do this more often?
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: So my Substack, you will notice, has been quite adornment.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: But in my defense, I've been, yeah, and I've had other writing things on it.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: We'll document it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: So if you've got a Substack and you want us to come on and have a chat,
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: we will do it and we'll document it and hopefully have something.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: Should we make this like a bit of a regular thing?
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: We can make it a regular thing, yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: And also as time goes on,
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I'm going to kind of be doing some posts on Substack about the back end
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: of how we kind of started to even...
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Come up with the idea, the genesis of the idea.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: Scott and I sat down and did a bit of a fireside chat style thing a while ago
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: about each of the things about how did we come up with the idea,
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: how did we turn it into a book,
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: parenting being such a fraught and controversial sort If you have a lot
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: of unprotected sex, you might need this at one point.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Get a copy of the book, you're not a real.com.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Sorry, that got a bit shameless.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: That did get a little bit shameless.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what's this, SNL?
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Come on, what are we doing?
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: So, thank you.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: So, not just catch the ends.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, Tracy, we will definitely put a notice out exactly when we're doing these.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Thank you for coming in at the end.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: If you do want to watch the replay of this,
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: we will be posting it tomorrow with a bit of a recap and some...
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: It's all slow motion, though.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: It's our nod to
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: the sport.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's true.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Just a slow motion replay.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Two and a half hours of us very slowly.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Thank you to everyone who tuned in.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And yeah,
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: we're going to continue this experiment,
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: see how it goes and just see if we can sell this book by sharing the process of it.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: And yeah, and that's what we're doing.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: We are.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: We are.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: And listen to our podcast.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Is there something in this?
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: We're doing that as well.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: We don't really stop, do we?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: We should probably take a vacation at some point.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, you've seen what we're putting out.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: It's pretty easy.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: See everybody.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Bye.
