- 1:01Cheryl: Welcome to the parenting podcast listeners.
- 1:04Cheryl: We're glad you're here.
- 1:05Cheryl: We have DNA and Ellen and I'm Cheryl, how are y'all doing?
- 1:09Danae: Are good.
- 1:10Danae: I'm feeling a little bit as stressed.
- 1:13Danae: I'm registering for my summer classes.
- 1:17Danae: Uh, and you know, they have this little bitty window, my cohort, and I are trying to get in the same classes.
- 1:24Danae: And so
- 1:25Cheryl: Tell them, cause I know what you do, but tell them about yourself.
- 1:30Danae: Um, I'm in grad school and with the Townsend Institute, I'm getting my degree in mental health counseling.
- 1:37Danae: Online.
- 1:38Danae: Oh, it's online.
- 1:39Danae: Yeah.
- 1:40Danae: Yeah.
- 1:41Cheryl: So tell us, how has that messed with your life after Sage now or the students.
- 1:49Cheryl: 20 something or do they tend to be a little older or Um,
- 1:55Danae: So I'm in a cohort with five others and they're all in their twenties.
- 1:59Danae: I think the oldest is 30.
- 2:01Danae: And I had mentioned in another podcast, I think the one on friendship that I had reached out to another classmate that was around my age.
- 2:10Danae: So we could sit and talk about how it is for us.
- 2:12Danae: But the funny thing is.
- 2:14Danae: Is now I have finally given in that I need readers.
- 2:18Danae: And so they're all over my house.
- 2:21Danae: And I also just bought a stand it's a portable stand, so I can put my big, heavy text book in it and it will stand up because I was holding it and getting a cricket line.
- 2:35Danae: And because they're so heavy, I don't know how many.
- 2:38Danae: 30 pounds or something.
- 2:40Danae: Um, so I'm have my readers on, I have my text book standing up and I have to get up and make sure my lower back.
- 2:47Danae: Oh man, I'm sounding really fat.
- 2:51Danae: The one great benefit to going to this degree at this time in my life is I realized I have a lot of experience in life versus someone younger, you know, to be a counselor.
- 3:07Ellen: You've experienced a lot of the different things you're learning about, or, you know, someone who's gone through something like that.
- 3:14Ellen: Whereas when you're still in your twenties, it's all, um, theory.
- 3:18Ellen: Thank you.
- 3:18Ellen: That was lucky for us.
- 3:20Danae: Yes.
- 3:21Danae: I really enjoy what I'm learning.
- 3:23Cheryl: That's fantastic.
- 3:25Cheryl: What's something that you've learned recently that you could share with us.
- 3:31Danae: I don't know if you want to know this actually he's got bumped in my mind is, you know, a lot of our population in America struggles with depression, with anxiety.
- 3:40Danae: It's about 20%.
- 3:42Danae: Wow.
- 3:43Cheryl: not just being a little depressed, but actually it's true.
- 3:45Danae: Like a depressive mood disorder, anxiety disorder.
- 3:49Danae: And
- 3:49Ellen: of course all the lockdown and COVID yes.
- 3:52Ellen: Anybody who had a little bit of anxiety now has a lot of anxiety.
- 3:56Ellen: Absolutely.
- 3:57Cheryl: So for our dear listeners, people that are here, would you encourage them to go get help?
- 4:03Danae: Absolutely.
- 4:04Danae: Absolutely.
- 4:05Danae: Go to counseling.
- 4:07Danae: Going to counseling.
- 4:08Danae: Five years ago really changed my life and finding the support and having someone with a professional counselor that had the insight into what I needed.
- 4:22Danae: You know, a mom as a woman, it's a daughter, uh, yeah.
- 4:26Danae: Really
- 4:27Cheryl: changed my life.
- 4:27Cheryl: That's good.
- 4:28Cheryl: Also at a minimum, go to your doctor and just find out if there's anything off and listen to them.
- 4:36Cheryl: If you're not going to get into counseling, at least speak to someone that might be able to give you some perspective like that.
- 4:43Cheryl: That's a
- 4:43Danae: great start.
- 4:44Danae: In fact, that's something I'm learning.
- 4:46Danae: To have that reciprocal relationship with your mental health counselor and a doctor.
- 4:51Danae: Oh, um, we'll start there and then really reach out to support system.
- 4:56Cheryl: Yes.
- 4:57Cheryl: A good support system.
- 4:59Cheryl: That's excellent.
- 5:00Cheryl: Yeah.
- 5:01Cheryl: We've got questions here from moms.
- 5:03Cheryl: You want to dive into that for today?
- 5:05Cheryl: Um, okay.
- 5:06Cheryl: Have a mom send us a question about her team.
- 5:09Cheryl: Okay.
- 5:10Cheryl: my team has trouble keeping her room clean.
- 5:12Cheryl: I supervised and their room was playing while they were growing up.
- 5:16Cheryl: I used to get upset every night when it was time for bed and a room was a pit.
- 5:21Cheryl: Others are telling me it will affect her life.
- 5:23Cheryl: as An adult.
- 5:24Cheryl: If a room is always a mess, how important is that?
- 5:28Cheryl: Um, It's several issues going on there.
- 5:31Danae: Well, let's just say that I am a functioning adult with a somewhat clean house and my room was In fact, my best friend is.
- 5:44Danae: We had this deal that she would come home with me and I would make her dinner and she would clean my room.
- 5:51Danae: It was
- 5:51Ellen: amazing.
- 5:53Danae: So, well, yeah, she doesn't still live with me, so that's really great.
- 6:02Cheryl: So the first thing is.
- 6:03Cheryl: The two things aren't correlated and, um, in our family, because our kids shared rooms so much.
- 6:11Cheryl: And that cause they always say the other person's a messy one.
- 6:15Cheryl: And so we find out some that we'll find out who the messy one is.
- 6:20Cheryl: Well, I
- 6:21Ellen: was going to say my, my kids are kind of rule was you don't get to do anything till your room's clean.
- 6:27Ellen: You don't get to leave the house with everything all over.
- 6:30Ellen: So I know a couple of my daughters always talk their friends into helping them clean the room so they could get out of there and get going.
- 6:37Ellen: And, you know,
- 6:38Cheryl: And, uh, talk about my role as a parent.
- 6:43Cheryl: My job was to teach them how.
- 6:45Cheryl: And to show them right.
- 6:47Cheryl: And so when they were growing up, we did practice it and they knew how to do it.
- 6:51Cheryl: We've talked about chores before, but the life skill of how to clean and to keep their room.
- 6:58Cheryl: Um, and then as hours got into teen years, bill and I felt it was part of the releasing process that at a certain age, We said, okay, you can keep your room the way you want to.
- 7:10Cheryl: You know, you're going to be an adult in a few years on your own, going to college or whatever, you have to make your decisions.
- 7:17Cheryl: And so it was just part of our releasing process.
- 7:19Cheryl: And bill told me, that's why we have doorknobs.
- 7:23Cheryl: So we couldn't close the door.
- 7:26Cheryl: And so it was left up to them with the one rules, no food, please don't let food stay in there.
- 7:31Cheryl: That would be the one problem.
- 7:33Cheryl: And then sometimes if we're having people come visit or at a certain point, we would say, okay, we need to clean it up now because we have guests coming for it to be hospitable to them.
- 7:43Cheryl: So I don't know what the child was going to
- 7:45Ellen: say.
- 7:45Ellen: I was pretty intolerant of.
- 7:48Ellen: Um, you know, that to me was really important that the house was picked up and tidy and, you know, you can come to my house now it's that way there might be dust, but it was always picked up and tidy.
- 8:00Ellen: So it was, um, it was an important thing for me to make sure that before a kid left the house, uh, like if they're going to go out with their friends or something, that their room was picked up and tidy and, um, you know, children are just born certain ways.
- 8:15Ellen: We had one kid that was, you know, probably what you would call a messy by nature.
- 8:19Ellen: And she was probably the hardest one to help keep her, her room clean.
- 8:25Ellen: And even it spilled over into her car too, but now she's a wonderful HomeKeeper her house is always beautiful, you know, but I think Cheryl, you.
- 8:35Ellen: Hit the nail on the head.
- 8:36Ellen: We have to teach our kids the skills.
- 8:38Ellen: Yeah.
- 8:39Ellen: Because that's important.
- 8:40Ellen: cause I can remember, you know, um, as a military wife living in base housing, having some of the younger wives come over who were, you know, college educated, but they didn't even know how to wash their laundry.
- 8:51Ellen: They didn't know how to do really basic things around their home because their parents always did it for them.
- 8:58Ellen: And that puts your kid in a negative place and a place of frustration if they know how to do stuff.
- 9:04Ellen: That's what my daughters had said to me, you know, because we knew how to do things.
- 9:09Ellen: When we became wives and new moms, it wasn't as hard.
- 9:13Ellen: Yeah.
- 9:14Ellen: Because we already knew how to kind of cook.
- 9:16Ellen: We knew how to maintain a house.
- 9:17Ellen: So adding a baby to that, didn't make it that hard.
- 9:21Cheryl: And it's interesting because my kids sum up having roommates.
- 9:25Cheryl: They've been surprised what you're saying.
- 9:29Cheryl: A lot of people don't have all the skills.
- 9:31Cheryl: But, you know, it, again, it doesn't matter.
- 9:33Cheryl: They can do what they want, but they know how, so I have some that you would call messies, but if they need to, they know exactly what to do to clean.
- 9:44Cheryl: They know how to handle it.
- 9:46Cheryl: And they're gonna just give them, they're going to have to figure it out.
- 9:50Danae: Alan, can you remember back to maybe a specific story about.
- 9:56Danae: When it was harder.
- 9:57Danae: Cause right now it sounds like you had a system and it always worked perfectly like, so, you know, cause the emotions get involved.
- 10:06Danae: Right.
- 10:06Danae: Cause we get, yeah, we can get frustrated with our children.
- 10:09Danae: So can you give us a little more information
- 10:11Ellen: about how that were offered my children, tent living a few times, you know, when they go live in a tent in the backyard?
- 10:20Ellen: No, I mean there were, uh, Different children were different, but there were conflicts with the more messy children.
- 10:27Ellen: I didn't have very much tolerance for that.
- 10:29Ellen: It was like, sorry, go clean up your room.
- 10:32Ellen: And I found an old apple in there and all these other different things, but I can remember one time and I know my daughter doesn't mind me sharing this, but I can remember one time with one of our Missy kids.
- 10:43Ellen: Um, and she had her own room and, um, and in a large family, that's privileged.
- 10:49Ellen: She had a little bit, she actually had.
- 10:51Ellen: Maid's quarters in the 1920 housing that we lived in.
- 10:57Ellen: It was a little teeny tiny.
- 10:59Ellen: It was as big as the studio we're in here now, but she had this little room and it was just always a mess.
- 11:05Ellen: And I just, I had had it and I was just ready to go in there and let her know.
- 11:09Ellen: I, you know, you got your own room.
- 11:11Ellen: Why is it such a mess?
- 11:13Ellen: she wasn't home And I just remember the Lord said go in and clean up her room for her.
- 11:19Ellen: And I went in and picked up all her stuff, which I didn't normally do.
- 11:23Ellen: I usually made my kids do it and I picked everything up for her.
- 11:26Ellen: And that was a really, um, relational changing thing because I had a good attitude and she really appreciated it.
- 11:33Ellen: It was like, she saw me a little differently.
- 11:36Ellen: And as I was picking up her clothes, I was appreciative about the good things about her.
- 11:42Ellen: Even though she was messy, she had a lot of other really good qualities.
- 11:45Ellen: And that was just, you know, one of those changes in my heart.
- 11:51Ellen: It didn't change me from.
- 11:52Ellen: Wanting my kids to pick up their room, but it just put me in a different place realizing, oh, this is my child.
- 11:59Ellen: And she knows better.
- 12:00Ellen: She knows that a cleaner room, but I'm going to clean it for her this time.
- 12:05Cheryl: I love that.
- 12:06Cheryl: Cause what you brought in, it's so much better.
- 12:09Cheryl: Grace and love and to do it and to interact with her, with grace, because to interact with rules is pretty efficient, but it doesn't build that relationship.
- 12:23Cheryl: So all the rules you ever gave your children, all that training.
- 12:28Cheryl: That didn't build the relationship the way love and grace will do
- 12:32Danae: very true.
- 12:33Danae: And I like how both of you talk about the life skills?
- 12:38Danae: You know, I think as a mom or when we're busy, we have so much going on.
- 12:44Danae: We can let our emotions roll and be like, I'm, I'm so upset because you didn't do what I told you to do to clean the house.
- 12:51Danae: And now it becomes personal.
- 12:53Danae: But when you, you can think about this is going to help my child in the future.
- 12:58Danae: If I teach them these life skills, it's not personal, it's not a personal affront when they don't clean their room, you know?
- 13:07Danae: So that can be separate of the life skills I'm teaching as part of my job.
- 13:12Danae: And then the.
- 13:14Danae: Big part of my job is to have a good relationship with my child.
- 13:19Danae: So one doesn't go out of balance.
- 13:23Cheryl: The priority is the relationship while we're doing the other stuff.
- 13:29Cheryl: well, on the funny coping mechanisms I trust died laughing, the first time I I couldn't believe it.
- 13:35Cheryl: And then I've had multiple children do it because, um, my kids who went to college.
- 13:41Cheryl: Stayed at home because they didn't want to pay somewhere else because it's mom's bed and breakfast.
- 13:47Cheryl: Okay.
- 13:48Cheryl: So they stayed home.
- 13:50Cheryl: And then Would go so long without doing laundry And I found out They would just buy more underpants and socks.
- 13:57Cheryl: Now
- 13:57Danae: I've heard
- 13:58Ellen: rumors of that.
- 14:01Cheryl: So they would just keep buying more so that they could go longer because jeans and hoodie or jeans and a t-shirt can go awhile,
- 14:10Danae: even you're well-trained.
- 14:14Cheryl: So they figure it out.
- 14:16Danae: there's No guarantee, you know, I feel like we talk about this a lot that we can do what we think is best doesn't mean it's perfect.
- 14:23Danae: It's not always right.
- 14:25Danae: And trying to help them prepare to be out in the world and to be that adult that the, mom asked about if she was going to ruin them, not cleaning their house.
- 14:35Cheryl: well deny what you're saying is our children are individuals and they're not a chemistry project and they're not.
- 14:43Cheryl: Something in a Petri dish, they're not dogs or horses that can be trained.
- 14:48Cheryl: And also so much of the training you do with those is behavior modification.
- 14:54Cheryl: And so there is a place where we do train here's where we sit.
- 14:57Cheryl: Here's how and what to do to clean., and so there's training, which does modify, but it never gets to the heart.
- 15:05Cheryl: And I want to love my children.
- 15:08Cheryl: So I care about their heart more than anything else.
- 15:12Ellen: And we used to teach our children.
- 15:14Ellen: I mean, I was raised by grandparents.
- 15:16Ellen: So these are people that were born in, you know, 1904.
- 15:20Ellen: So they raised me.
- 15:21Ellen: So it was pretty old school, but.
- 15:23Ellen: Manners, keeping your room clean.
- 15:25Ellen: We're all courtesy to other people.
- 15:27Ellen: You know, that was the way of showing appreciation to your family.
- 15:30Ellen: When the kitchen's cleaned, then it's easier to cook in it.
- 15:34Ellen: Right?
- 15:34Ellen: When the laundry's done, it's easier to go someplace because you're have clean clothes.
- 15:39Ellen: And so helping your children to also realize it's not about doing this task, that there's a bigger picture beyond this.
- 15:46Ellen: That, you know, you can help other people if you're not having to spend two hours cleaning your room because you don't want to take 10 minutes every day and just pick up.
- 15:55Ellen: So just, you know, helping them see the practical sides that, you know, it makes your life easier.
- 16:00Ellen: If you get your stuff.
- 16:01Ellen: And we had it that each of our kids had laundry day when they got old enough that they could run the washer and dryer.
- 16:07Ellen: I stopped washing kids clothes, but if you missed your laundry day, you had to negotiate with your brothers and sister.
- 16:14Ellen: Oh, you had to make me go buy some So I have a question for both of you.
- 16:21Ellen: Do you make your bed
- 16:23Danae: every single day?
- 16:26Cheryl: I have decided Yes I'm a naturally make your bed type person.
- 16:31Cheryl: Okay I have been intentional about it being widowed and living by myself.
- 16:36Cheryl: But I'm not like the hospital.
- 16:40Cheryl: Straight everything corners.
- 16:42Cheryl: I just kind of, if it looks nice, I'm good.
- 16:44Cheryl: And bill was different.
- 16:46Cheryl: Cause he would say, we're just going to get back into it tonight.
- 16:49Cheryl: You
- 16:49Danae: know, I'd like him,
- 16:52Cheryl: but if he made it, it was made perfectly, he would strip everything back and make everything straight.
- 16:57Cheryl: And I go, no wonder you don't want to make it every day.
- 17:01Cheryl: So I just get through, but I decided it's a healthy thing for me living by myself.
- 17:07Cheryl: If It sounds a little silly, but it kind of shows respect to me.
- 17:12Cheryl: Okay.
- 17:12Cheryl: It's the same thing.
- 17:13Cheryl: Like eating at the table, eating a dinner.
- 17:15Cheryl: Sometimes I'll do candles, but sitting down and using everything for a real meal sitting at the table.
- 17:22Cheryl: Again, I don't do it all the time, it brings a sort of a, normalcy to say, this is.
- 17:29Cheryl: Equality life worth treating with respect.
- 17:33Cheryl: If that makes any sense, it may be crazy, but I think it's healthier for me.
- 17:43Danae: Oh, I didn't want you to ask.
- 17:46Danae: Um, a lot of times in the morning, I still have a big king bed and, um, I do have the pretty pillows in the backs of sometimes I'll just, the covers will just have been peeled and sometimes I'll leave it.
- 17:59Danae: I don't know.
- 18:00Danae: Maybe I'm a little bit of the opposite right now in my life where I'm like, I don't have to make the bed.
- 18:04Danae: If I know one.
- 18:06Danae: And then it, most days, a little later in the day, when then I've had my coffee and done some things around the house I'll, um, come back and then make it, and it feels the same Sheryl where it's like, I enjoy this room looking pretty.
- 18:22Danae: I've spent a lot of time to make my room a Haven.
- 18:25Danae: All my favorite colors, I have shells.
- 18:28Danae: And so for me to do that for myself, I think maybe it shows me the days that if I've gone several days without making my bed, and maybe I'm not caring for myself very
- 18:36Ellen: well.
- 18:37Ellen: It's really good.
- 18:38Ellen: It's almost like you haven't gotten dressed in the morning.
- 18:40Ellen: If that's how I feel.
- 18:41Ellen: If I don't make my Bo
- 18:45Danae: maybe that's a problem.
- 18:46Danae: I did my pajamas a
- 18:47Ellen: few hours and I've always been like this.
- 18:49Ellen: I mean, my mother would show my room.
- 18:51Ellen: Oh, because I had a color coordinated closet as a teenager on purpose.
- 18:58Ellen: Yeah.
- 18:59Ellen: And so, um, Mike said he was, he came into my room, which was pretty rare.
- 19:03Ellen: He wasn't usually out in my bedroom.
- 19:05Ellen: It
- 19:05Cheryl: was when they were
- 19:07Ellen: teenagers, it was like 17.
- 19:09Ellen: So he came back in the bedroom.
- 19:10Ellen: When I went back there to get something and he picked up something on my shelf.
- 19:14Ellen: And I guess he didn't put it in the right spot.
- 19:16Ellen: And I went behind him and I didn't even know I did it and I straightened it out and he said, oh yeah, I filed that away as
- 19:23Cheryl: scary.
- 19:24Cheryl: Okay.
- 19:25Cheryl: But like we were talking about the two of us as single women trying to treat ourselves better.
- 19:34Cheryl: Ellen.
- 19:34Cheryl: Cause I know her so well, her keeping her room.
- 19:37Cheryl: Was it just a natural.
- 19:40Cheryl: Predisposition.
- 19:41Cheryl: So share a little bit about that, about your relationship to your mom, and because we are so complicated, because if any of you that are regular listeners, you hear.
- 19:53Cheryl: Ellen has a tinier life than what I've had.
- 19:57Cheryl: Her home was run a tighter ship, but in this case, that's where we have to take the time to think of everybody as individuals and realize they have a whole life and they have hurts and they have dreams and all of this and not to make a big deal of it, but sort of Ellen, what was a little bit behind your color coordinated closet and your.
- 20:19Cheryl: Perfectly don't move anything rum.
- 20:22Cheryl: Well,
- 20:22Ellen: my mother was very controlling, so for me, that was a way I could have a control.
- 20:29Ellen: Over my own stuff.
- 20:30Ellen: Is that what you were thinking?
- 20:31Ellen: Yeah.
- 20:31Ellen: And that was a lot of the reasons that I kept my things very controlled.
- 20:36Ellen: Cause that was the one space I had control of in my life.
- 20:40Ellen: And so, um, of course my mother liked it because she never had to nag me to keep it clean.
- 20:46Ellen: Cause I, that would be just something I would never think not to be tidy about.
- 20:50Ellen: But um, sometimes for me making my bed.
- 20:55Ellen: Is changed because now my husband works from home.
- 20:58Ellen: And so he works in the office for the first time ever is in our bedroom.
- 21:03Ellen: One of his many offices, he has three, but, um, I realize.
- 21:09Ellen: I used to get up and instantly make the bed.
- 21:12Ellen: But then as I've gotten a little bit older, I'm just going, oh, look, I could get some coffee first.
- 21:16Ellen: Well, then I realized, oh, it was bugging him because I wasn't making the bed because I come back in and the bed would be totally made.
- 21:23Ellen: Now we don't put all the 20 pillows on, but the basic thing.
- 21:26Ellen: So then I realized, oh, I need to be more cognizant of that because Mike's working in there.
- 21:31Ellen: Sometimes he doesn't want to look at at 10 o'clock the bed still not made.
- 21:34Ellen: So sometimes that's just a courtesy, but I mean, in all.
- 21:38Ellen: We've all had the three of us have had large families making bed is such a minor thing.
- 21:43Ellen: Yeah.
- 21:44Cheryl: But the deeper issue all of this just reminds me.
- 21:48Cheryl: Listeners life is complicated we're complicated Life is challenging and that's why we need to take the time, slow down for us as believers, our relationship with God is so important And get good people speaking into our lives Get the help you need to process it.
- 22:09Danae: and drying.
- 22:11Cheryl: this weekend, I was struggling with something and someone I'm very close to spoke into my situation and helped me see what I was really struggling with was the fantasy ideal in something rather than reality.
- 22:26Cheryl: life just takes a long time.
- 22:28Cheryl: and people matter.
- 22:29Ellen: And, and we live in troubled times.
- 22:31Danae: We've talked about a couple of hard things
- 22:34Ellen: I mean, there's trouble everywhere, right?
- 22:36Ellen: And it's in, it's heavy trouble, you know, whether it's in our personal lives or in the world, but let's find places where we can have joy and just enjoy things because there is a lot to still enjoy, you know, and, and you know, that wonderful cup of coffee in the morning that just tastes so good or looking out and seeing the flowers are starting to come out and the grass has grown.
- 22:57Ellen: I mean, just the simple pleasures.
