- 0:01What's going on, onefjef?
- 0:04So Chris said that you weren't feeling so hot, man.
- 0:08So I just wanted to say feel better soon, and that you're awesome.
- 0:13My hope is that if you aren't feeling better by the time you get this video,
- 0:19that you feel better super soon, man, so you can get back to the good life.
- 0:24This is CDMX Dispatch numero ocho.
- 0:30Hello again, my friends, my family, my enemies, my neutral parties who I don't
- 0:41really have much of a thought about.
- 0:43All of you, hello.
- 0:46Welcome once again to onefjef, the podcast, home of top choice parasocial
- 0:52content for you and your ears.
- 0:57I've had a month.
- 0:58I think I can very easily say that I've had quite a, um, a
- 1:01difficult month here in Mexico City.
- 1:05And, you know, this is what it's about, the testing of the resilience,
- 1:09the how do you do in the hard times, the et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:13But I'm alive, and I'm starting to accept that part of this experience,
- 1:20this relocating, this restarting my life experience in a new
- 1:23country, is about letting it roll.
- 1:30Letting it roll, not getting caught up.
- 1:33Don't cling to it.
- 1:34Let it go.
- 1:35Like meditation, let the thoughts come and go.
- 1:39Just enjoy the ride.
- 1:40That's, I guess, the thing.
- 1:42I've learned to enjoy the ride.
- 1:44You have to do your best to enjoy the ride.
- 1:47Otherwise, you're going to get sick and throw up everywhere.
- 1:51I'm no longer sick.
- 1:52I was sick for two weeks.
- 1:55As I think I said in the last podcast, eventually I wasn't getting
- 1:59better with the stomach illness, so Patricia took me to a pharmacy
- 2:06where there's a doctor there, and the doctor just kind of lives next door.
- 2:10Doesn't live, but, you know, has a little office next door.
- 2:12And you go in, and they check you out, and you don't even have to pay them.
- 2:14You just-- There's a tip jar.
- 2:16Literally, there's a tip thing there.
- 2:17So you tip them, like, two or three hundred pesos or whatever, and then you go
- 2:21next door, and you get your prescriptions.
- 2:23I guess all I needed was antibiotics because the antibiotics really immediately
- 2:27was… Not immediately, but a few days later, I was finally starting
- 2:31to feel like myself again and not, you know, peeing out of my asshole.
- 2:35Sorry, sorry.
- 2:36Couldn't help it.
- 2:37So God bless modern medicine or, in this case, somewhat older medicine.
- 2:42Antibiotics have been around for a long time, but you get the idea.
- 2:45And I got my first experience with Mexican medical care, at least one
- 2:49part of it, and it was a positive one because I, I feel better.
- 2:52So hooray for that, right?
- 2:56But it was still about five days after that that I was still kind of recovering.
- 3:01But I think, like, yesterday and today is the first days I've actually felt like
- 3:04myself again, which has felt amazing.
- 3:07The first game of the World Cup was yesterday.
- 3:11I'm recording this on Friday, and it was here in Mexico City.
- 3:14I did not go to the game.
- 3:15The tickets were, of course, eight hundred dollars apiece for nosebleed seats, which
- 3:19again, FIFA is a criminal organization, but we don't need to go into that.
- 3:24I watched the beginning of it.
- 3:25I watched, like, the opening ceremony.
- 3:27The school that I'm taking Spanish classes at had a little, I don't know,
- 3:31party or gathering where they showed the opening ceremony, and they were gonna
- 3:36watch the whole game on a projected screen in one of the classrooms.
- 3:40And I hung out there for a while.
- 3:41We had pizza and stuff, and that was fun.
- 3:43But then the, uh, YouTube video, I don't know where they were getting the
- 3:46stream from, but it kept stuttering.
- 3:47Like, every five seconds it would stop and start again, and I'm thinking, "I cannot
- 3:51watch the whole game like this." Nobody else seemed to mind, but I was just, "No,
- 3:55I cannot watch the whole game like this."
- 3:58So I left right after kickoff, and since I left right after kickoff, I'm walking
- 4:03back to my apartment through, like, k- a little bit of Condesa and then into
- 4:07Roma Sur, and it was like a ghost town.
- 4:10I have never seen Mexico City quite like this.
- 4:12There was barely any traffic, and the area my school is in
- 4:16is a very busy intersection.
- 4:18But it was like it was not busy at all.
- 4:20They, they let everybody stay home from work yesterday.
- 4:22I think everybody had to work from home.
- 4:24I don't know if the kids had school.
- 4:25So there's reasons for it, but even, like, the taco stands, which are numerous, um,
- 4:30all the food stands that are numerous in that area, were all kind of dead.
- 4:34And, uh, it was kind of amazing, like, in a weird way, you know?
- 4:40They were all just not doing anything and just listening to the game or watching
- 4:43the game, and everywhere you went, all you heard was just sounds of the game,
- 4:47the broadcast of the game everywhere.
- 4:49And then you knew when there was a goal because I was walking…
- 4:52The first goal, I was walking.
- 4:54I was almost to my apartment, and I knew exactly when the first goal happened
- 4:57because then you suddenly h-heard horns honking and the sound of people cheering
- 5:01from some apartment, whatever it was.
- 5:03It's pretty neat.
- 5:04It's pretty neat.
- 5:06So then I met up with my friend Shauna at a cantina here that we've gone to before.
- 5:12It's about equidistant between our apartments, and we went there once before.
- 5:16And cantinas are, uh, like- Basically old-timey Mexican bars.
- 5:22I guess that's the only way to put it.
- 5:24I think they used to be men only, but they're not anymore obviously.
- 5:27But it's just like an old-timey Mexican bar.
- 5:29It's like a traditional Mexican bar.
- 5:32This one's not as old-timey as others, but it's definitely got a vibe to it.
- 5:36And so we went there, but as I was walking over there, like every single
- 5:40restaurant and bar, y- you can just peek in 'cause they've all got open fronts
- 5:43'cause the weather here is amazing, and they've all got the game on.
- 5:46You can watch the game and, you know.
- 5:48It was fun.
- 5:48The entire city was kinda like unifying.
- 5:51So we went to the Ultramin- Ultramarina Cantina it's called actually, here in, I
- 5:57think it's Roma Sur, but maybe Roma Norte.
- 5:59And they're always wonderful too.
- 6:00The both times we've been there they've been just w- so wonderful,
- 6:03and we're always the only, you know, white people in there.
- 6:07We sat on the patio, watched the game on a little TV.
- 6:10It was a beautiful day, and everybody walking by was in a good
- 6:14mood with wearing the, you know, the, the jerseys and everything.
- 6:17I don't really care that much about sports, but it always makes me happy when
- 6:19a sport thing brings together a giant population of people under one umbrella.
- 6:24Like everybody likes each other, and that's always nice.
- 6:26Not that people get, don't get along and don't like each other here in
- 6:28Mexico City, but you know what I mean.
- 6:30So they won the game, of course, and every time there was a goal, I caught some of it
- 6:35on a, uh, or maybe Shauna did, on a video
- 6:45And then after they won the game, a guy, one of the, you know, the guys
- 6:48who works there comes around and gives free shots of tequila to everybody.
- 6:52And then we were still on the porch, and then it started to rain.
- 6:55And this, uh, torrential rainfall came in, which happens quite a bit
- 6:59here, but it was torrential, you know?
- 7:01And we're under this umbrella on the, on the patio, and it was
- 7:04just kind of beautiful, really.
- 7:05It was really fun.
- 7:07There's people going by cheering, people honking their horns.
- 7:10At one point, there was a guy with a giant Mexican flag in the rain just
- 7:14waving this Mexican flag determinedly.
- 7:17You know, determinedly?
- 7:18I think that's a word.
- 7:20Everybody was in a good mood.
- 7:21I didn't know that I was gonna do anything for the World Cup,
- 7:23but I'm really glad that I did.
- 7:25I'll go watch the next game too Another announcement is that I am
- 7:30moving to a new apartment next month.
- 7:34I'm going back to the US for about two, two and a half weeks in about two
- 7:39weeks to see the family and to enjoy the kickass 250th birthday of America.
- 7:46Bam!
- 7:47Hell yeah, bro.
- 7:49How can I miss the 250th birthday of America?
- 7:51It might be the end.
- 7:52It might be the end, and if it is the end, it's the most perfect ending of all time.
- 7:56You could not write a book or a movie or anything better than the story of
- 8:00America that ends with Donald J. Trump.
- 8:02You could not.
- 8:03Anyway, when I leave for the States, I am going to be moving out of this apartment.
- 8:07I'm leaving a bunch of my stuff over at my friend's house, and then when I come back,
- 8:12I will be moving right into the new place.
- 8:14Why are you moving, you ask?
- 8:16Well, I'm moving because when I was sick for two weeks, I realized that
- 8:19this apartment, which is mostly an Airbnb that has been… They got
- 8:23sick of Airbnb-ing it, and they just decided to rent it long term.
- 8:27When I was sick here for two weeks, I realized, I looked around 'cause
- 8:29there's, I mean, there's so much of his stuff, the guy who owns the apartment.
- 8:31It's all over the apartment.
- 8:33There's his books.
- 8:34There's his stuff on the wall.
- 8:36It's really… I feel like a stranger, like, in this house.
- 8:39I feel like if it was just an Airbnb that I was renting for, like, a month, and I
- 8:41knew I was leaving, that would be fine.
- 8:43But, like, being here for, like, three more months, it's hard enough doing
- 8:48what I'm doing here while also feeling like I'm a stranger, like I'm a guest
- 8:52in this apartment that is supposedly supposed to be mine, you know?
- 8:55And also, there's been a, there was a ton of noise when I was sick for those two
- 8:59weeks, and it drove me a little crazy.
- 9:02And the street is also very noisy.
- 9:04As I've lived here longer, I've realized that I don't need
- 9:07to live on this busy street.
- 9:08It's very, very noisy at night, and I can't really have my windows open.
- 9:12Anyway, many reasons that I wanna leave, and there's also a complicated
- 9:16story about how the guy's not giving me my deposit back, blah, blah, blah.
- 9:19But I don't really wanna go into that because it's not fun.
- 9:23The apartment I'm moving into is, uh, much smaller, but this apartment
- 9:26is, is just too big for me, honestly.
- 9:28It's two bedrooms.
- 9:29One of the bedrooms I'm just using for storage.
- 9:31And then when the, when the, when the cleaning women come, every time
- 9:35they come, I can't find something.
- 9:39Like, it's where did they put this?
- 9:40Where did they put this?
- 9:41Like, they always are rearranging things, and it drives me insane But
- 9:47then they also, like, occasionally fold my underwear in a very nice way, and
- 9:52that actually makes me forgive them.
- 9:54So… And I've tried to fold my underwear in the same way, but I'm unable to.
- 9:58It's like origami, something like that.
- 10:01So granted, I haven't spent a lot of time trying to figure out how
- 10:05they fold the underwear, but I've spent, you know, five to 10 minutes,
- 10:11five to 10 minutes, I'd say.
- 10:12The next place is just a one-bedroom, but it's, like, more modern.
- 10:15It's on the top floor of a five-story building, and it has a, like a patio that
- 10:20you can see the mountains around the city.
- 10:22I can watch the storms roll in.
- 10:24That was kind of the selling point.
- 10:25The patio was a big part of it.
- 10:27Also, it's just a cool… Like, it's, it's not big, but it's a cute little place.
- 10:31The street is also quiet, and there's a garbage room, so I don't have to chase
- 10:34down the dinging bell to take my garbage out, which honestly will be wonderful.
- 10:40So that's what's happening, and in a way it feels kind of like a reset, you know?
- 10:46Like a starting over.
- 10:47You know, I did round one with Mexico City.
- 10:50I'll be leaving, then I'm coming back, and then I start round two, and I've
- 10:53got this next apartment for seven months and I can always extend, so.
- 10:56So yeah, I'm excited.
- 10:57I'm excited for a change of location.
- 10:59You know, I did like this apartment quite a bit at first, but the
- 11:01longer I've been here, the more the, the issues with it have started
- 11:04to kind of become more apparent.
- 11:08And then I just kind of really lucked on this other apartment.
- 11:11I was one of the first people to message on Facebook, and I think that's
- 11:14a big part of the reason I got it.
- 11:15And it's cheaper than this place too, which also helps.
- 11:18So, so that's happening and I'm excited.
- 11:22And there's also a screen on the bedroom window which, if you know, you know
- 11:26because the mosquitoes here are a thing.
- 11:28They're not crazy bad, but if you leave your window open without a screen on
- 11:31it at night you're gonna get a mosquito in there, and that mosquito is going to
- 11:34drive you to the edge of your sanity.
- 11:37It is going to drive you to the very edge of your sanity But if there's a
- 11:44screen, they can't come in, so bing bong.
- 11:47In case you're wondering, there will be new feature length episodes
- 11:51coming soon with interviews from expats and so forth, and Mexicans.
- 11:56Uh, I've got a bunch of them in the can.
- 11:58In the can is lingo for I've already recorded them.
- 12:01And, uh, I just have to double down and start to cut these things
- 12:04down and start releasing them.
- 12:05But believe you me, in the next week or two I'll start to get those out.
- 12:08Um, I've also been working quite a bit.
- 12:09I'm still taking Spanish for six hours a day.
- 12:11I'm not making excuses, I'm just explaining.
- 12:14But next week is my last week for a while of, of all these Spanish
- 12:18classes because it is exhausting.
- 12:20Like, I didn't realize how much energy it takes to just think hard for six hours.
- 12:28I'm not moving, I'm just thinking, and by the end of the six hours I'm exhausted.
- 12:32My brain is just like leaking out of my ears.
- 12:35So I'm gonna do one more week because I really do enjoy some of
- 12:38the people in some of the classes.
- 12:39Some of the teachers are great, and I'm learning a lot, and they're giving me
- 12:43a 10% discount, which is also nice, so.
- 12:46So yeah, one more week of that, and then, then I go to Cleveland the next week, and
- 12:50then, uh, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 12:53I wanna give a shout-out to our newest Patreon subscriber.

- 15:56I know.
- 15:57I appreciate you, but just give me one moment, and we will find it.
- 16:03Let's see.
- 16:05Ah, here's a good one.
- 16:06A poem by Rumi, the Sufi poet from whatever century he was in.
- 16:14It was a long time ago.
- 16:15When was he in?
- 16:1613th century Sufi poet.
- 16:19I think Rumi is short for Rumiford.
- 16:21Here's the poem: "Keep walking, though there's no place to get to.
- 16:25Don't try to see through the distances.
- 16:27That's not for human beings.
- 16:29Move within, but don't move the way fear makes you move.
- 16:33Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened Don't open the
- 16:39door to the study and begin reading.
- 16:41Take down a musical instrument.
- 16:43Let the beauty we love be what we do.
- 16:46There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
- 16:51I'll see you next week.
- 16:52Very good, Jeffrey
