- 0:22Speaker 2: This year, I'll go one on one with Cam Taylor

- 0:28Speaker 2: far season, and in our NOA Faux segment, we'll find

- 1:10Speaker 2: the greatest thing since the Marty Brenneman Statue. This Saturday,
- 1:16Speaker 2: the Cincinnati Reds will honor legendary broadcaster Marty Brenneman with
- 1:20Speaker 2: the unveiling of his bronze statue outside of Great American Ballpark.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I've said before that Marty is responsible for one of
- 1:28Speaker 2: the greatest streaks in sports history. Over forty six years
- 1:33Speaker 2: and more than seven thousand games, he never botched a
- 1:37Speaker 2: big call as the voice of the Reds, whether it
- 1:40Speaker 2: was the final out of the World Series, a perfect
- 1:43Speaker 2: game by Tom Browning, or hit number forty one ninety
- 1:47Speaker 2: two by Pete Rose. There was never a stumble, wrong
- 1:51Speaker 2: name or incorrect detail. The words and the tone were
- 1:56Speaker 2: always perfect. Take it from somebody who tries to do
- 1:59Speaker 2: the same thing for a living.
- 2:01Speaker 1: That is nothing.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Short of miraculous. As a play by play announcer of
- 2:05Speaker 2: live sporting events, you work without an eraser or backspace key.
- 2:11Speaker 2: You have one chance to get the moment right, and
- 2:14Speaker 2: Marty did for nearly half a century. I look forward
- 2:18Speaker 2: to seeing the statue of one of bye broadcasting heroes.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Now let's get to my first guest. My friend Adam
- 2:25Speaker 2: Shine is a busy man every weekday from nine to noon.
- 2:29Speaker 2: He hosts Shine on Sports on Sirius XM Radio. He
- 2:34Speaker 2: is the host of the Rise and Shine podcast. And
- 2:37Speaker 2: now you are going to be seeing him frequently when
- 2:40Speaker 2: you watch the NFL on CBS. When you watch the
- 2:45Speaker 2: Bengals on CBS this year and they go to the
- 2:47Speaker 2: studio for highlights, the guy that will be doing them
- 2:51Speaker 2: is my buddy, Adam Shine, and he will be sensational. Adam,
- 2:56Speaker 2: congratulations on that opportunity. Let's talk Bengals. You are a
- 3:00Speaker 2: big proponent of playing Joe Burrow and the starters in
- 3:03Speaker 2: the preseason. You got your wish. Why was it so important?
- 3:07Speaker 3: Well, first of all, then it's always great to be
- 3:09Speaker 3: with you, and I appreciate the nice words. You kind
- 3:12Speaker 3: of gave me the chills as you said that, because
- 3:15Speaker 3: I'm super excited.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's it's a dream assignment.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I did it a couple of times last year and
- 3:20Speaker 3: I'm fired up to do it every single week.
- 3:22Speaker 1: For the NFL and CBS and listen.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I give Zach Taylor a lot of credit, and frankly,
- 3:28Speaker 3: I give Joe Burrow a lot of credit. Look, everyone
- 3:32Speaker 3: knows the record for the Bengals first two weeks of
- 3:34Speaker 3: a season under Zach Taylor and it's a thing, and
- 3:37Speaker 3: it's real and something had to change. And I think
- 3:41Speaker 3: the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and
- 3:44Speaker 3: over again and expecting a different result.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And for a Cincinnati Bengals.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Team where Joe Burrow last year, Jamar Chase had this
- 3:52Speaker 3: unbelievable historic campaign and Cincinnati didn't make the playoffs, look
- 3:59Speaker 3: the goals to win a champcempionship.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's that's it.
- 4:02Speaker 3: So to me, even as Bengals fans are nervous as
- 4:06Speaker 3: Joe Burrow is running backwards with you know, makeshift, it's
- 4:10Speaker 3: a line of the preseason, Zach Taylor did the right thing,
- 4:14Speaker 3: even when t Higgins and Tomorrow were on the sideline.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I think he did the right thing. And I give
- 4:18Speaker 3: Joe credit because you know this more than anyone. You
- 4:22Speaker 3: have to have buy in from the quarterback and he's
- 4:25Speaker 3: the leader of the team, and Joe has to go
- 4:28Speaker 3: along with the plan. And I just think the world
- 4:31Speaker 3: of what the Bengals did because same old, same old
- 4:34Speaker 3: was not going to cut it, not going to cut
- 4:36Speaker 3: it for the leaders, not going to cut it for
- 4:38Speaker 3: the coaching staff, not going to cut it. For the
- 4:39Speaker 3: fan base there, obviously there's an expectation.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I had T Higgins on my Serious XM radio show.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He said, look, it's about getting into the tournaments and
- 4:49Speaker 3: winning games, and that to me, for an NFL player,
- 4:53Speaker 3: I think that's the awesome appropriate response.
- 4:56Speaker 1: When I asked about preseason expectations.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Especially in the AFC this year, make the playoffs and
- 5:02Speaker 3: be There are about six teams in the AFC that
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think internally the goal is to win a couple
- 5:08Speaker 3: of playoff games. Like obviously on math that can't happen,
- 5:13Speaker 3: but Cincinnati is one of those teams. Win a couple
- 5:16Speaker 3: of playoff games, play on championship Sunday and see what transpires.
- 5:21Speaker 3: So I know social media was set up plays when
- 5:24Speaker 3: Zach had everybody in I know, when Burrow's getting hits,
- 5:27Speaker 3: everyone gets nervous. Look, no matter what happened, it was
- 5:31Speaker 3: the right coaching decision and approach. I was very outspoken
- 5:35Speaker 3: on that, and I'm excited for Zach and the Bengals
- 5:38Speaker 3: to be rewarded for it because you know nowadays social media,
- 5:42Speaker 3: you know, talk radio, all the talking heads, there's so
- 5:45Speaker 3: much scrutiny. No matter how it played out, that was
- 5:49Speaker 3: the right move. I was happy that the sports gods
- 5:52Speaker 3: smiled on the Bengals in terms of no injury, no harm,
- 5:56Speaker 3: no foul. So I'm excited for the Bengals to start
- 6:00Speaker 3: this year in the first two weeks.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Of the season.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We like the way that sounds. Let me follow up
- 6:05Speaker 2: on your interview with t Higgins. You asked him about
- 6:07Speaker 2: the importance of a fast start. He said, I don't
- 6:11Speaker 2: really like that narrative, and the national media pounced stephen
- 6:16Speaker 2: A Smith ridiculed him for that. But I think you
- 6:19Speaker 2: got what he meant that it's more than just a
- 6:21Speaker 2: fast start. They're trying to have a great season. Is
- 6:25Speaker 2: that how you took it?
- 6:27Speaker 1: One hundred percent?
- 6:28Speaker 3: And listen, the beauty is anyone could take anything anyway.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And you know I love stephen A. He's my guy,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and you know I can appreciate anyone doing what they
- 6:38Speaker 3: do and saying and spinning anything their way.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I followed up.
- 6:43Speaker 3: On Tea's response because I found it so interesting and Dan,
- 6:48Speaker 3: the way I heard it was okay, we know the record.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Tea's lived it, Cincinnati's liveded. It's bigger than the first
- 6:58Speaker 3: two weeks. It's okay, next game, next opponent, get to
- 7:02Speaker 3: the playoffs, do some damage. Like t Higgins is foaming
- 7:06Speaker 3: at the mouth to play ball, Like leave that to
- 7:09Speaker 3: me to talk about the first two weeks. He just
- 7:12Speaker 3: wants to go out play Cleveland, get off to a
- 7:15Speaker 3: good start and win, and he wants to win week one,
- 7:18Speaker 3: week eight January and into February. So I took that
- 7:23Speaker 3: in terms of his response as let's just kick the
- 7:27Speaker 3: thing off, let's play ball. I think on the heels
- 7:29Speaker 3: of last year for team, you know, obviously with the
- 7:32Speaker 3: contract and the injury and the ambiguity, he's thrilled to
- 7:36Speaker 3: be back in Cincinnati.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I think he's gonna have a terrific season.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And I think for him it was Okay, we know
- 7:43Speaker 3: the deal, we get it, let's go play football.
- 7:48Speaker 2: The Bengals extended Jamar, they extended Tea, they were able
- 7:51Speaker 2: to work things out with Trey for this season. How
- 7:54Speaker 2: do you grade their offseason?
- 7:57Speaker 3: I think the offseason was an a you know, and
- 8:00Speaker 3: I'll even factor in Shamar Stewart's right, and even when
- 8:04Speaker 3: things were kind of going sideways here, right, you know,
- 8:08Speaker 3: where we didn't know about Trey, we didn't know about Schamar.
- 8:12Speaker 3: It all works and you know, forget about the comments
- 8:16Speaker 3: or the whold out or.
- 8:18Speaker 1: The inactivity in May.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Stewart looked great in camp from all reports, looked good
- 8:23Speaker 3: in the preseason games.
- 8:24Speaker 1: From all reports. I thought the pick was really good
- 8:28Speaker 1: at the time.
- 8:29Speaker 3: You know, Trey Hendrickson, you needed him to sign in
- 8:31Speaker 3: my opinion by a certain dates.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He did it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I think he'll be top four, top five for a
- 8:38Speaker 3: quarterback sacks. He's a terrific player, I thought, and I
- 8:42Speaker 3: love that Rumo did on defense. I thought bringing in
- 8:45Speaker 3: Al Golden again needed to make a change. You know,
- 8:49Speaker 3: I still think what coach Rumo did was was strong
- 8:51Speaker 3: for a long period of time. But I'm a big
- 8:54Speaker 3: Al Golden fan. I thought that was terrific. And Dan,
- 8:57Speaker 3: let's not bury the lead here because I think times,
- 9:01Speaker 3: you know, with the Bengals, it could be, oh, they didn't.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Do this, or they're doing that.
- 9:05Speaker 3: They signed Jamar Chase and t Higgins, and I was
- 9:08Speaker 3: pretty outspoken on that where you needed to sign both
- 9:13Speaker 3: and that sounds great if you have a microphone in
- 9:15Speaker 3: the national media.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Right, the Bengals did it. When you have Joe Burrow.
- 9:20Speaker 3: When the Colts I had Peyton Manning. You want to
- 9:23Speaker 3: give him two absolute stars at the receiver position. It
- 9:27Speaker 3: was Harrison and Wayne and now it's Chasing Higgins. You know,
- 9:31Speaker 3: some number two is historically you know, we could talk
- 9:35Speaker 3: Peerless Prize or Alvin Harper. They changed teams. You know,
- 9:38Speaker 3: t Higgins is a legit number one receiver. He just
- 9:42Speaker 3: happens to be the number two on the Cincinnati Bengals
- 9:44Speaker 3: because Jamar Chase is outstanding. So for the Bengals to
- 9:48Speaker 3: realize that that gives them the best opportunity to win
- 9:52Speaker 3: and to keep that together. And that's Look, you can
- 9:56Speaker 3: debate anything. You know, Joe Burrow's top four quarterback in
- 9:59Speaker 3: the NFL. You could tell me he's one, two, three
- 10:01Speaker 3: or four and we could have an intelligent conversation. We
- 10:04Speaker 3: know the other names of Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and
- 10:06Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes. There's no debate. Best quarterback receiver combo in
- 10:11Speaker 3: the NFL. That's Cincinnati. That's a strength and I think
- 10:16Speaker 3: the Bengals deserve a lot of credit for keeping that
- 10:19Speaker 3: band together.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Adam he tweeted recently, I want to love this team,
- 10:24Speaker 2: but so you've got some reservations.
- 10:27Speaker 1: What are they?
- 10:29Speaker 3: I need to see the defense. I think it will
- 10:31Speaker 3: be better. I need to see it the tackling preseason.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Look, we always.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Get nuts when things are great in the preseason, and
- 10:39Speaker 3: you know, I refer to it Dan as you don't
- 10:41Speaker 3: want to get Joey Harrington's right, Like I remember Joey
- 10:44Speaker 3: Harrington looked great in a couple of preseason games.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Oh, Joey Lynn's good. I mean you don't.
- 10:49Speaker 3: So you always want to, you know, go against you know,
- 10:53Speaker 3: having something ultra positive, and then you think you're gonna
- 10:56Speaker 3: crown somebody. I think when there's something you cancerned abouts
- 11:01Speaker 3: and is on the heels of last year, is on
- 11:03Speaker 3: the heels of you know what we saw with when
- 11:06Speaker 3: Cincinnati defense did not perform well, that to me was
- 11:10Speaker 3: a little alarming in terms of the defense. I kind
- 11:14Speaker 3: of wanted the offensive line again, not on the preseason,
- 11:17Speaker 3: just maybe in terms of names and personnel and offseason to.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Feel a little bit better about it. You know. I
- 11:24Speaker 1: made my picks.
- 11:25Speaker 3: For the AFC Tuesday after Labor Day, and I took
- 11:30Speaker 3: the Bengals and I thought about taking them to win
- 11:33Speaker 3: the division.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I picked them third in the division.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I picked them seventh seed, and I honestly in the
- 11:41Speaker 3: AFC North. I struggled because I think there are three
- 11:45Speaker 3: teams that have real Super Bowl aspirations. I put Pittsburgh
- 11:48Speaker 3: in the conversation. I love Baltimore this year. I really
- 11:53Speaker 3: want to see Cincinnati playing for a Super Bowl. I
- 11:56Speaker 3: think the elements are there. I think there's a lot
- 11:59Speaker 3: of areas that are underrated. My concern is that the
- 12:03Speaker 3: other two teams in the division are just a little
- 12:07Speaker 3: bit more well rounded.
- 12:08Speaker 1: That might not matter.
- 12:10Speaker 3: And if this defense under Coach Golden, plays to the
- 12:14Speaker 3: level I think they are capable of where they can
- 12:16Speaker 3: create turnovers, get sacks, get the opposition's offense off the field,
- 12:20Speaker 3: get Joe the ball back, then I think they'll be fine.
- 12:24Speaker 3: But I just I'm concerned about the division and the
- 12:29Speaker 3: defense and how it stacks up ultimately.
- 12:31Speaker 2: In the ANC North, the Bengals open in Cleveland. The
- 12:35Speaker 2: Browns have issues, but we've learned not to take anything
- 12:38Speaker 2: for granted, especially in the AFC North. What do you
- 12:42Speaker 2: think about that Week one matchup?
- 12:44Speaker 3: So maybe this is me drinking the kool aid after
- 12:47Speaker 3: the T Higgins interview, but I can't stress enough how
- 12:53Speaker 3: much I love the Bengals, Like I think Joe Burrow
- 12:57Speaker 3: is going to absolutely explode. I think that t Higgins
- 13:01Speaker 3: and Jamar Chase will get into the end zone a
- 13:04Speaker 3: couple of times each. Like I think that because of
- 13:09Speaker 3: the history and the precedents of the slow starts since
- 13:13Speaker 3: twenty nineteen, and the expectations and the offseason, I just
- 13:19Speaker 3: think they're not taking anything for granted. You talk about
- 13:22Speaker 3: your reference obviously, my take on the genius of playing
- 13:26Speaker 3: these guys in the preseason, I think Borrow is gonna
- 13:29Speaker 3: come out firing. Like it's kind of crazy and I'm
- 13:32Speaker 3: guilty of it. We all start doing MVP rankings in September,
- 13:36Speaker 3: like there's you know, any kind of avalidity to it.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I think Joe Burrow for MVP, Jamar Chase for Offensive
- 13:43Speaker 3: Player of the Year. After the first two weeks of
- 13:46Speaker 3: the season, Like when you start seeing odds and line movement,
- 13:50Speaker 3: we're going to be talking about those guys being absolutely dominant.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I also think that Joe Flacco, while he was strong,
- 13:58Speaker 3: let's be fair, a couple of years ago playing for
- 14:01Speaker 3: Kevin Stefanski, I think the most underrated story when it
- 14:05Speaker 3: comes to Cleveland or under talked about story, Joe Flecko
- 14:10Speaker 3: did him play well last year? That's why Indianapolis moved
- 14:14Speaker 3: on from him. So my expectations for the Browns are
- 14:18Speaker 3: really low. Now, obviously they have Miles Garrett, their defense
- 14:21Speaker 3: is strong. I think Kevin Stefanski is a hell of
- 14:24Speaker 3: a coach. They will be ready. But I really think
- 14:28Speaker 3: the Bengals come out with a vengeance internally and to
- 14:32Speaker 3: kind of maybe hush some of the loud, obnoxious voices
- 14:36Speaker 3: on the outside, and I think they spank the Cleveland Browns.
- 14:41Speaker 2: All Right, you heard it from Adam Shine, This has
- 14:44Speaker 2: been great. Can't wait to see you in the studio
- 14:46Speaker 2: throughout this season on CBS. Thanks so much for joining us, Dan,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you the best, Appreciate anything for you. After t Higgins
- 14:53Speaker 2: appeared on his radio show, Adam praised his leadership, accountability
- 14:58Speaker 2: and just play ball mentality and predicted that t is
- 15:02Speaker 2: going to have a monster year. Here's hoping he's right
- 15:07Speaker 2: up next. My one on one visit with Cam Taylor
- 15:10Speaker 2: Britt last week on this podcast, I included Cam on
- 15:14Speaker 2: my list of the Bengals top five training camp standouts.
- 15:18Speaker 2: A few weeks ago, we were talking about his strong
- 15:20Speaker 2: camp and Cam mentioned that he's following a strict daily routine.
- 15:24Speaker 2: This year that begins with making his bed in the morning,
- 15:28Speaker 2: and that reminded me of one of the best speeches
- 15:31Speaker 2: I've ever heard. Several years ago, Naval Admiral William mccraven
- 15:36Speaker 2: delivered the commencement speech at the University of Texas and
- 15:39Speaker 2: shared ten lessons he learned from basic seal training. If
- 15:44Speaker 2: you've never seen it, I highly recommend looking up McRaven
- 15:48Speaker 2: commencement speech on YouTube. The first lesson he shared with
- 15:52Speaker 2: the graduates is the importance of making your bed.
- 15:56Speaker 5: If you make your bed every morning, you will have
- 15:58Speaker 5: accomplished the first task of the day. It will give
- 16:02Speaker 5: you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage
- 16:05Speaker 5: you to do another task, and another and another, and
- 16:09Speaker 5: by the end of the day that one task completed
- 16:11Speaker 5: will have turned into many task completed. Making your bed
- 16:14Speaker 5: will also reinforce the fact that the little things in
- 16:17Speaker 5: life matter. If you can't do the little things right,
- 16:21Speaker 5: you'll never be able to do the big things right.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And if, by chance, you have a miserable day, you
- 16:27Speaker 5: will come home to a bed that is made, that
- 16:31Speaker 5: you made, and a made bed gives you encouragement that
- 16:35Speaker 5: tomorrow will be better. So if you want to change
- 16:37Speaker 5: the world, start off by making your bed.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Now, here's my conversation with fourth year cornerback cam Taylor Brett.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Kem.
- 16:48Speaker 2: You were talking a few weeks ago about following a
- 16:51Speaker 2: strict routine and you said, you have to make your
- 16:53Speaker 2: bed in the morning to start the day off. Right,
- 16:57Speaker 2: there's a famous speech where Admiral will Yeah McRaven talks
- 17:01Speaker 2: about that. Are you familiar with that speech? Did a
- 17:04Speaker 2: coach or a mentor talk about the importance of beginning
- 17:07Speaker 2: the day making your better? Did you just come up
- 17:10Speaker 2: with that on your own?
- 17:11Speaker 6: Kind of been doing my whole life? Honestly, I think
- 17:14Speaker 6: that's the best way you start your day off. And
- 17:17Speaker 6: I think it's kind of plays the test of football,
- 17:19Speaker 6: you know, detailed, you know, and everything else. And think
- 17:22Speaker 6: about it. If you're not life is a miss. Your
- 17:24Speaker 6: room is a miss, you know, and that's the one
- 17:26Speaker 6: you know you don't want to live that way. And
- 17:28Speaker 6: I said, yeah, most definitely start by cleaning my room
- 17:31Speaker 6: on basically making my bed, you know, uh, the first
- 17:33Speaker 6: start all.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Right, Now, you have to watch that speech because he says,
- 17:37Speaker 2: if you want to change the world, make your bed
- 17:39Speaker 2: every morning.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Wow. Almost definitely didn't know that.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So when you talk about following a more strict routine,
- 17:49Speaker 2: how is that helping you?
- 17:52Speaker 4: Man? Thank yous planning out in my favor.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Man, Honestly, I feel like I've gotten better in every
- 17:58Speaker 6: every way, uh physically and a better football player by
- 18:05Speaker 6: cutting out some things and just putting some things in.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Something like that.
- 18:08Speaker 6: I need to do far as my body, working with
- 18:11Speaker 6: certain people, getting extra work with Chuck, you know, as
- 18:15Speaker 6: my dog. So you know, I want to be the
- 18:17Speaker 6: best I can be and he wants me to as well,
- 18:19Speaker 6: so you know, he he's always on my side to
- 18:21Speaker 6: help me. You know, anytime I want to know or
- 18:23Speaker 6: get some air strata, know this, this andess, especially with
- 18:26Speaker 6: the game's.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Coming, You're always confident. But is it at a new
- 18:30Speaker 2: level going into this season.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is. I don't know the word for it. Man.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I just want to play with.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Fire under my butt, you know, every play basically, don't
- 18:46Speaker 6: let nothing go for.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Granted, don't look back at my damn.
- 18:51Speaker 6: You could have doled for that, or could have did
- 18:53Speaker 6: this or Yeah, I don't want no fear of failure.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Basically playing out there this year, you know, want.
- 19:00Speaker 6: To be the best cam tend a brid out there
- 19:02Speaker 6: on the field for the Bengals.
- 19:03Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. That's it.
- 19:05Speaker 2: You've been asked a lot about last season, and it
- 19:07Speaker 2: was obviously an inconsistent one for you, but you always
- 19:11Speaker 2: point out that you did play all seventeen games. Why
- 19:15Speaker 2: was that so important to you?
- 19:17Speaker 6: It was very important to me, just because it doesn't
- 19:19Speaker 6: happen a lot, especially in the NFL week. The week
- 19:23Speaker 6: in these games that we do play are very crucial
- 19:26Speaker 6: on the body.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Sometimes there's short weeks. You know, you got your Monday
- 19:30Speaker 4: night games purs of night games, and your body doesn't
- 19:33Speaker 4: fully recover.
- 19:34Speaker 6: But I feel like that's one thing I took a
- 19:36Speaker 6: step in lest year, was trying to make sure my
- 19:38Speaker 6: body was always right, and I think it kind of
- 19:40Speaker 6: played out into my favor and towards the end of
- 19:43Speaker 6: the season. You know, but that is a great thing
- 19:45Speaker 6: to play a full season of football.
- 19:47Speaker 2: You've got new defensive coordinator and Al Golton. Did that
- 19:50Speaker 2: give you a fresh start?
- 19:52Speaker 6: I would say so, yeah, you can honestly put it
- 19:56Speaker 6: in those words, as you know, like you said, the
- 19:59Speaker 6: year ahead, Uh, it's like a fresh everything, you know, uh,
- 20:04Speaker 6: And and just coming into the building with a new
- 20:06Speaker 6: mindset as with the defense.
- 20:08Speaker 4: And everybody's all aboard on it. It's been great.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Did you feel like lou Ana Roumo lost faith in you?
- 20:15Speaker 6: I wouldn't say I feel like he lost faith. I
- 20:17Speaker 6: think one thing he always tried to do is getting
- 20:19Speaker 6: me back to where I was.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Honestly, in a way, I don't.
- 20:23Speaker 6: I know, it's a business at the end of the day,
- 20:25Speaker 6: and if you're you're messing up out there, you don't
- 20:27Speaker 6: belong out there. And that's what it was in the sense,
- 20:29Speaker 6: So I don't. I wouldn't say that. He's always pushed
- 20:32Speaker 6: me and you know, been behind me and in ways
- 20:34Speaker 6: that I probably wouldn't even know behind closed doors.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Chuck Burks is in your corner. Describe your relationship with
- 20:41Speaker 2: your cornerbacks coach.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Father figure away from you know, a home.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Basically, I don't. You don't have to go and look
- 20:49Speaker 6: for a search or anything. When I got you know,
- 20:51Speaker 6: chick right there, you know, uh for basically you know
- 20:53Speaker 6: all my answers. I can speak to him, you know,
- 20:55Speaker 6: not just about football, but you know outside of the building,
- 20:58Speaker 6: you know, my life. Want us to know about your
- 21:01Speaker 6: mental and how are you not just the football player?
- 21:06Speaker 4: But Cam celebrate.
- 21:09Speaker 2: This is a contract year. The top cornerbacks in the
- 21:12Speaker 2: NFL are making more than twenty million dollars a year.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Do you have to put that in the back of
- 21:17Speaker 2: your mind at the start of a season.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Yeah, just go ball, do my job. The ball will
- 21:23Speaker 6: find me. It's simple as that. Just continue to do
- 21:27Speaker 6: what I do and don't don't veer away from the light,
- 21:32Speaker 6: you know, to shine that.
- 21:34Speaker 4: I put out there already on.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Myself, gonna shy away from you know, take take everything,
- 21:40Speaker 6: simple as it.
- 21:42Speaker 2: We're visiting with Cam Taylor Brett. You open against the
- 21:44Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns with forty year old Joe Flaccoyd quarterback. He
- 21:48Speaker 2: played his first NFL game when you were eight years old.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Can you fool a guy like that? Or do you
- 21:55Speaker 2: beat him with a good pass rush and forcing him
- 21:58Speaker 2: to make throws that he'd do want to make?
- 22:01Speaker 6: I think that's sacod answer is probably the busines answer.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Uh yeah, not much fooling. You would say, what has
- 22:07Speaker 6: he seen? But we can play harder than him, We
- 22:12Speaker 6: can play we can we can you know, rest the
- 22:14Speaker 6: quarterback a lot faster, you know, make him make a
- 22:16Speaker 6: decision a lot faster. Uh, dis ripped the time in
- 22:20Speaker 6: on the outside of receivers. Yeah, I wouldn't say. You know,
- 22:25Speaker 6: there's not much you could do with my Joe. Man,
- 22:27Speaker 6: he's he's a season vent for sure. And you know,
- 22:30Speaker 6: we just gotta go out there and play our game.
- 22:31Speaker 4: You know. Uh, whatever our calls, we run it and execute.
- 22:35Speaker 2: It's your fourth NFL season, the Bengals have never won
- 22:39Speaker 2: in Week one. How sick are you of all of
- 22:42Speaker 2: the fast start conversation?
- 22:45Speaker 6: He pissed me off. Man, I feel like, you know,
- 22:46Speaker 6: at the end of the day, we just need to
- 22:47Speaker 6: go out there and go do it. And I played
- 22:49Speaker 6: a huge factor in that. So, you know, we just
- 22:51Speaker 6: gotta go out there and do it. None knows to
- 22:53Speaker 6: be said.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Final thing for Cam Taylor Brett, your alma mater. Nebraska
- 22:58Speaker 2: open this season with a victory over the University of
- 23:00Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bearcats. Safe to assume you watch the game and
- 23:03Speaker 2: what did you think?
- 23:05Speaker 4: Yes?
- 23:05Speaker 6: I did watch the game, Man, go big Red. That
- 23:07Speaker 6: was a lovely win, especially in the arrow. But uh,
- 23:11Speaker 6: you know, I do think the Husters can make a
- 23:14Speaker 6: run for it, you know, I think, of course, there's
- 23:16Speaker 6: some bumpser bruises along the game.
- 23:18Speaker 4: First game of the season Jitters.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Also, you know they're playing at the NFL stadium, so
- 23:23Speaker 6: I know some of those kids very in all. But
- 23:25Speaker 6: uh right, the kid Dealer, he's very smooth too. Man
- 23:29Speaker 6: like how he plays at a running back over there.
- 23:32Speaker 6: I gotta get his name and he went for like
- 23:34Speaker 6: one twenty.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Five Ammitt Johnson.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Yeah, he's nice, man. I love the way he runs
- 23:38Speaker 4: very hard.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Marque's Bruefort on defense, Malcolm Hartzog on defense.
- 23:44Speaker 4: They're looking good, man.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I think they could do some big Congrats on that win.
- 23:48Speaker 2: More importantly, get one against Cleveland.
- 23:50Speaker 6: Most definitely who the that's Camp Taylor Brett.
- 23:54Speaker 2: The first depth chart of the year, Cam Taylor Brett
- 23:56Speaker 2: and DJ Turner are listed as the starting outside corners,
- 24:00Speaker 2: with Dax Hill penciled in as the starter at slot corner.

- 24:07Speaker 2: Proud to be the Bengals official HR software provider, by

- 24:22Speaker 2: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time for
- 24:26Speaker 2: this week's Know the Faux segment. After winning eleven games
- 24:30Speaker 2: and going to the playoffs two years ago, the browns
- 24:32Speaker 2: fortunes plummeted last season as Cleveland went three to fourteen.
- 24:38Speaker 2: As a result, the Browns appear to have moved on
- 24:41Speaker 2: from the two hundred and thirty million dollar mistake by
- 24:44Speaker 2: the Lake quarterback to Shawn Watson and started another rebuild
- 24:49Speaker 2: built around the league's best defensive player, Miles Garrett and
- 24:52Speaker 2: a bunch of draft picks. Zach Jackson, who covers the
- 24:56Speaker 2: Browns for The Athletic, joined Dave Lapham and me on
- 24:59Speaker 2: the Bengals Game Planned show this week and I asked
- 25:02Speaker 2: him what success looks like for the Browns in twenty
- 25:06Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 25:09Speaker 7: Well, I think it means getting some clarity on some things,
- 25:12Speaker 7: and even if that's not quarterback, you know, I think
- 25:15Speaker 7: they have to know that they were right to recommit
- 25:17Speaker 7: smile Garrett. I think they have to know that they
- 25:20Speaker 7: had a good draft class, which they think they do,
- 25:23Speaker 7: and they need to know if they have the right
- 25:25Speaker 7: guys in charge. Frankly, and I think these are smart guys.
- 25:28Speaker 7: I think they've done a good job in spots and
- 25:30Speaker 7: bad spots. Bad job in others, But I don't know
- 25:33Speaker 7: that the greatest front office in the world could recover
- 25:35Speaker 7: from the Deshaun Watson mistake. I really mean that. And
- 25:39Speaker 7: it's gonna haunt this team. It's gonna hurt their salary tap,
- 25:42Speaker 7: it's hurt how they're perceived, right, and the roster is
- 25:46Speaker 7: not awful, but it's pretty thin. So we're just starting
- 25:49Speaker 7: a long journey here, and I don't know what the
- 25:52Speaker 7: roster is going to look like or what the record
- 25:53Speaker 7: is going to look like, you know, three months from now.
- 25:57Speaker 7: I got a feeling the Browns are going to be
- 25:58Speaker 7: really hard to play against, if this makes sense, But
- 26:01Speaker 7: I'm not sure how many games they're gonna win. So
- 26:03Speaker 7: that's the hell of a question you've asked there.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and a very interesting answer.
- 26:07Speaker 8: I mean, I think the biggest concern that I would
- 26:11Speaker 8: have as a as a Cleveland Browns fan is the
- 26:14Speaker 8: quarterback position. You mentioned Joe Flacco. Is Joe Flacco got
- 26:18Speaker 8: anything left? Is he got something in the tank? I
- 26:21Speaker 8: think Cleveld's gonna score some points. I think they'll score
- 26:24Speaker 8: some points. My question is will the Bengals be able
- 26:27Speaker 8: to score points against the Cleveland Browns? Defensive football team.
- 26:31Speaker 8: And do the Cleveland Browns defensive football team have any
- 26:34Speaker 8: weaknesses anywhere that you're that concern you going into this opener?
- 26:40Speaker 7: Yeah, a corner. They're really thin and you don't want
- 26:42Speaker 7: to be that against the Bengals. Right, they're finant linebacker.
- 26:46Speaker 7: Now the rookie, the second round rookie Carson Sweatsyer. I
- 26:48Speaker 7: want you guys to circle that name because he is
- 26:50Speaker 7: off to an amazing start. And I think they got
- 26:52Speaker 7: one right there. We'll see, yeah, Lap, I think Flaco's
- 26:56Speaker 7: in great shape. I know we can still sling it.
- 26:58Speaker 7: I know they're going to have a good plan on right.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Can they avoid the turnovers?
- 27:03Speaker 1: You know?
- 27:03Speaker 7: Can they get up enough to really put pressure on Burrow?
- 27:06Speaker 7: The Browns offensive line should be a strength. They have
- 27:09Speaker 7: four guys back who've been there a long time. The
- 27:12Speaker 7: problem is none of the four are under contract for
- 27:14Speaker 7: next year. You know, Joel Atonio's had a borderline Hall
- 27:16Speaker 7: of Fame career. We don't know if he's going to
- 27:18Speaker 7: play anymore after this year. So it's a top heavy team.
- 27:22Speaker 7: It's a team that has good players in most spots,
- 27:25Speaker 7: that's completely unproven depths and has questions across the offense,
- 27:28Speaker 7: and then you know, we know that September in the
- 27:31Speaker 7: NFL is strange. But in this game, you have a
- 27:33Speaker 7: clear elite offense in the Bengals and a really good
- 27:36Speaker 7: to elite defense in the Browns. The other side step
- 27:39Speaker 7: question marks. So I think we see this game more
- 27:41Speaker 7: clearly than you see a lot of early season games.
- 27:43Speaker 7: But what's going to happen? I don't know. I think
- 27:46Speaker 7: it's going to be wild come Sunday afternoons.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Zach Jackson covers the Browns for the athletic Miles
- 27:52Speaker 2: Garrett demanded a trade early in the offseason. Browns gave
- 27:56Speaker 2: him one hundred and sixty million dollars to change his
- 27:58Speaker 2: mind after seeing what the Cowboys got in exchange for Parsons.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Should the Browns have traded Miles Garrett?
- 28:10Speaker 7: No, even though I thought mostly they should have. I'm
- 28:13Speaker 7: glad you've stramed it that way, Dan, because it's like this,
- 28:16Speaker 7: you would have had to have get gotten a real
- 28:18Speaker 7: offer that was almost double that for the Browns to
- 28:21Speaker 7: entertain it. They think he's that good, right, and you
- 28:23Speaker 7: can we can talk for hours about how they just
- 28:25Speaker 7: throw money to fix their problems, and we could talk
- 28:28Speaker 7: for hours about whether Miles Garrett's going to give you
- 28:30Speaker 7: full buy in or whether he's still going to be
- 28:32Speaker 7: great the next time that you're good. But they couldn't
- 28:35Speaker 7: be the front office that traded four to Shaun Watson
- 28:38Speaker 7: and traded away Miles Garrett for one and for two.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Even though they're pretty walking, pretty close to admitting they're
- 28:44Speaker 7: in a rebuild, they think Miles is so generationally good
- 28:48Speaker 7: and has so much left in the tank that they
- 28:50Speaker 7: weren't going to watch him walk away. And I think
- 28:52Speaker 7: this summer he and Denzel Ward have both been phenomenal.
- 28:55Speaker 7: That's part of the reason, along with that rookie linebacker
- 28:58Speaker 7: that I think the defense gives them a chance. And
- 29:00Speaker 7: like I said, this is going to be a really
- 29:02Speaker 7: hard team to play against. I don't know about the
- 29:05Speaker 7: offensive cohesion, I don't know about the depth. You know,
- 29:09Speaker 7: you never know with injuries. But it is a team
- 29:12Speaker 7: in a really weird spot because their best players are
- 29:14Speaker 7: either thirty or near thirty and make a lot of money,
- 29:17Speaker 7: and there's not a ton of young players there and
- 29:19Speaker 7: there's certainly no long term answer at quarterback.
- 29:24Speaker 8: Did Dallas get enough? When you talk to people in
- 29:26Speaker 8: the Cleveland Browns organization. You said, Miles Garrett, you know
- 29:30Speaker 8: they would have they would have commanded twice as much.
- 29:33Speaker 8: He's when the Dallas Cowboys got What did does Cleveland
- 29:36Speaker 8: do that? People look in the front office in Cleveland
- 29:38Speaker 8: think that Dallas kind of enough.
- 29:41Speaker 7: No, I don't think anyone does. And it's just, you know,
- 29:43Speaker 7: they were just not realistically ever going to get enough
- 29:45Speaker 7: to trade the guy right. So they went out and
- 29:47Speaker 7: they paid ten million to a veteran in Elie Collins
- 29:50Speaker 7: to play next to him, and they went and they
- 29:52Speaker 7: got the number five pick in the draft, Mason Graham,
- 29:54Speaker 7: who's going to be a going up against the new
- 29:56Speaker 7: right guard. And they hope that those guys can only
- 29:58Speaker 7: share it. And they hope that Garrett, I think thirteen
- 30:01Speaker 7: sacks in twelve games against the Bengals, they're hoping he
- 30:03Speaker 7: has about five of them on Sunday.
- 30:07Speaker 2: A couple more questions for our guests, Zach Jackson, who
- 30:09Speaker 2: covers the Browns for the Athletic. There are a lot
- 30:12Speaker 2: of Ohio State fans, obviously in the Cincinnati area, and
- 30:16Speaker 2: anybody that watched Quinn Seawan Judkins played for the Buck
- 30:19Speaker 2: guys last year, particularly in the National Championship Game. I
- 30:22Speaker 2: wouldn't want to face him. I mean, he is an
- 30:25Speaker 2: angry runner, but he's been out of training camp because
- 30:30Speaker 2: of a contract battle. Is he gonna play on Sunday
- 30:33Speaker 2: or do the Bengals get to avoid him in week one?
- 30:36Speaker 7: He had no chance even if he signs. And I
- 30:38Speaker 7: really don't know what's going on exactly with that, but
- 30:41Speaker 7: you know, he's missed all a training camp, so he
- 30:43Speaker 7: has really put I don't want to say it here
- 30:45Speaker 7: in the first week of September that he's put his
- 30:47Speaker 7: entire rookie season in danger. But when you're a running
- 30:50Speaker 7: back and you missed training camp, it's going to be
- 30:51Speaker 7: awfully hard to gain the trust of the staff. And
- 30:54Speaker 7: they picked him over Trayvon Henderson, his Ohio State teammate,
- 30:57Speaker 7: because they thought he was the better stylistic fit for
- 31:00Speaker 7: what they needed and what they want to do, and
- 31:02Speaker 7: to not have him leave a running game that was
- 31:04Speaker 7: completely broken last year with two intriguing backs in Ford
- 31:08Speaker 7: and Stampson. But they're smaller backs and neither one of
- 31:11Speaker 7: them as talented as he is. So it is a blow.
- 31:13Speaker 7: And it is one of these things that you look
- 31:15Speaker 7: and you say every year it's something with this team,
- 31:17Speaker 7: and this year it's the number thirty six pick in
- 31:20Speaker 7: the draft not having a contract four days before the
- 31:23Speaker 7: season starts.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Boy, I'll tell you that's that's interesting. What offensively Cleveland's
- 31:31Speaker 8: got Joe Flackhall. You mentioned that Joe Flaccoll looks really good.
- 31:35Speaker 8: I mean he probably throws the ball. Joe Barlow was
- 31:37Speaker 8: talking about him today, saying that he's a natural.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Thrower of the football.
- 31:42Speaker 8: The ball comes out of Joe Flacco's hand about as
- 31:44Speaker 8: well as he's ever seen. Who are his main weapons
- 31:49Speaker 8: or is it just a collection of a little bit
- 31:51Speaker 8: from everybody.
- 31:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I think Jerry Duty is no doubt the number
- 31:55Speaker 7: one guy. They're going to utilize David Najoku, and they're
- 31:59Speaker 7: also going to utilize as the rookie tight end Harold Fannon,
- 32:02Speaker 7: who's gonna kind of eventually take over from the Joku,
- 32:05Speaker 7: maybe as soon as this month, but we'll see. But
- 32:07Speaker 7: it's Jerry, Judy Speed, It's Cedric Tillman size, it's the
- 32:11Speaker 7: new rookie Isaiah Bond, who I think will get some
- 32:13Speaker 7: gadget plays and maybe a bomb or two. I mean,
- 32:16Speaker 7: there's a lot that went right back in twenty three
- 32:19Speaker 7: when Flacco came off the couch and led the Browns
- 32:21Speaker 7: to the playoffs flat. But when you watch those games,
- 32:23Speaker 7: there are many times that you see you look and
- 32:26Speaker 7: you say, well, the safety was out a position or
- 32:27Speaker 7: somebody got fooled there, and that's not really the case.
- 32:30Speaker 7: It's that Flacco throws it so much further than almost
- 32:32Speaker 7: every other quarterback does that guys were not believing that
- 32:35Speaker 7: he would actually do that. So if he hits a
- 32:37Speaker 7: couple of those Sunday and the stadium goes nuts, the
- 32:39Speaker 7: Browns can get some momentum. If he throws it to
- 32:41Speaker 7: the other team, which he's been known to do, then
- 32:43Speaker 7: the Bengals might run away with it. I think it's
- 32:45Speaker 7: going to be a close game. I think the ball
- 32:47Speaker 7: is going to be in Burrough's hands late and the
- 32:48Speaker 7: game is going to be very much undecided.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Final question for me, Zach. They drafted two quarterbacks, Dylan
- 32:55Speaker 2: Gabriel and Shador Sanders. You would think at some point
- 32:59Speaker 2: this year, I want to know what they have. Did
- 33:02Speaker 2: either guy look like you would be able to start
- 33:04Speaker 2: relatively soon.
- 33:06Speaker 7: I don't believe that, at least not effectively. You know,
- 33:09Speaker 7: Gabriel was a six year college player. They drafted him
- 33:12Speaker 7: because they feel like that he was able to pick
- 33:14Speaker 7: things up in process and make a better transition. I
- 33:17Speaker 7: don't know that he'll ever have the ability, right, but
- 33:19Speaker 7: I would say then they're both going to play. When
- 33:22Speaker 7: we see you guys in January again, one of them
- 33:24Speaker 7: is going to be playing. They're probably both going to
- 33:26Speaker 7: play before that. You know, they would love, obviously for
- 33:30Speaker 7: one to be the answer. And maybe the only way
- 33:33Speaker 7: out of this Watson thing is to find your own
- 33:34Speaker 7: Brock Purty, right, a quarterback drafted late, comes out of
- 33:38Speaker 7: nowhere who doesn't cost anything and becomes that guy. Shador
- 33:41Speaker 7: is intriguing. He's miles away from that. Dylan Gabriel is
- 33:44Speaker 7: a fast processor and a pretty accurate thrower. I don't
- 33:47Speaker 7: know that he'll ever have this physical ability to be
- 33:49Speaker 7: a starting quarterback here. But the one prediction I have
- 33:53Speaker 7: for this season is, I think eleven times since ninety nine,
- 33:57Speaker 7: the Browns have had at least three different starting quarterbacks
- 33:59Speaker 7: in a season. Write me down for number twelve and
- 34:01Speaker 7: twenty twenty five.
- 34:02Speaker 4: That's incredible.
- 34:03Speaker 8: What a stat that is the coaching staff? How safe
- 34:07Speaker 8: is everybody is? Kevin Stefanski. Is he in good shape
- 34:11Speaker 8: with the general manager, with ownership, with everybody.
- 34:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I think Kevin's held in high regard. I think
- 34:17Speaker 7: Kevin's going to have him really ready to play on Sunday.
- 34:20Speaker 7: And I don't think they want to move on. But
- 34:21Speaker 7: I think the answer to that question lies in what
- 34:24Speaker 7: kind of season is it?
- 34:25Speaker 4: Right?
- 34:25Speaker 7: Do they continue to have more judkins off the field incidents?
- 34:28Speaker 7: Do they have incidents where guys are loafings, or do
- 34:31Speaker 7: they come out and they compete and they're prepared and
- 34:33Speaker 7: sometimes they just turn out of talent. I think we
- 34:35Speaker 7: have to see that. I know that ownership does not
- 34:38Speaker 7: want to move on from the coach or the GM,
- 34:40Speaker 7: and I know that everybody's driven to make up for
- 34:43Speaker 7: this Watson mistake and to kind of hang their hats
- 34:46Speaker 7: on this rookie class that looks really good before a
- 34:49Speaker 7: real snap has ever played. But the reality is, when
- 34:51Speaker 7: you go from eleven wins in the playoffs the three wins,
- 34:54Speaker 7: I don't care who you are, You're on the hot
- 34:55Speaker 7: seats next year. So let's check back in a couple
- 34:57Speaker 7: months to see where that's stands.
