Latest / STR Unpacked / Vienna Just Raised Its Tourist Tax 56% Overnight
Transcript
- Ben: Good morning and welcome to your short term mental bulletin on the fourteenth of July. So Vienna just got more expensive and I think it's a preview really of where we might see Europe go over the next few years. So here's what's going on. So on the first of July, Vienna's tourist tax jumped from three point two percent to five percent. So it's a fifty six percent increase overnight, and it climbs again to eight percent next summer, making it Europe's second highest after Amsterdam. The city is also now enforcing a 90-day cap on short-term lats in residential zones with fines up to 50,000 euros. And Vienna isn't alone. Spain wants a 21% VAT on tourist rentals in a decree expected this month, and Norway in Tromoso just approved the country's first tourist tax at 3% from 2027. So why does all this matter, right? Bans hit some operators. Taxes hit all of them. This is now a margin game and it levies the land on your rates, whether you're licensed or not. So when cities can't cap supply, they tax it and price your 2027 rates for the levy now. So that's your briefing. I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for watching.
