- 0:33Speaker 2: And thank you very much for being with us in
- 0:35Speaker 2: the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network as
- 0:37Speaker 2: we celebrate, I don't know if it's a victory donut Tuesday.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I guess we just have to forego. You know that
- 0:44Speaker 2: Max Stark's had some beignets or probably. Oh, Max has got, no,
- 0:47Speaker 2: Max has got a, it's like a cruller of some sort.
- 0:50Speaker 3: There, Max.
- 0:52Speaker 4: That's a victory croissant Tuesday, my friend.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Oh, okay, all right.
- 0:56Speaker 3: That is a croissant.
- 0:59Speaker 4: We are still in the Parisian lifestyle. and regaling the
- 1:05Speaker 4: joyous victory over at Stade de France. So I am
- 1:09Speaker 4: having a victory croissant this Tuesday. So that is my
- 1:12Speaker 4: pastry of choice.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I love it. I love it. Willie, I hope you're
- 1:16Speaker 2: doing well on this Tuesday and that you enjoyed this
- 1:20Speaker 2: year's victory in Paris on Sunday. We're leaning in.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I think he did. He did.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:34Speaker 2: We're going to say he did.
- 1:36Speaker 3: We're going to say he did.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Uh, by the way, uh, one of the biggest reveals
- 1:42Speaker 2: of the trip should mention this right out of the shoot.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Chris Hoke's fluency in French. So Hokey spent a couple
- 1:50Speaker 2: of years in France on a mission trip. That was
- 1:53Speaker 2: his BYU or, uh, BYU for Hokey.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah. BYU. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And, uh, Didn't spend a whole lot of time in Paris,
- 2:02Speaker 2: but spent some time in some outer regions and was
- 2:04Speaker 2: fluent in French. And so it was– you know, when
- 2:08Speaker 2: we really needed him was yesterday at the airport when
- 2:11Speaker 2: we were trying to use the kiosks. Will be no
- 2:16Speaker 2: surprise to anybody who knows me well, and I think
- 2:20Speaker 2: I can include Max in this now that we've worked
- 2:23Speaker 2: together for a while, that technology– Not really good at it.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I'm the last guy to get that passport figured out
- 2:30Speaker 2: and get through those automated passports they have at the
- 2:33Speaker 2: airport now. But they were having problems with it. It
- 2:37Speaker 2: wasn't just me, which I was happy about. By the way,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I can never get the water, the automated water, like
- 2:43Speaker 2: a little soap in the water. Then I'll move to
- 2:46Speaker 2: another faucet, and then some guy will step up, and
- 2:50Speaker 2: the faucet that I was at will work. Now I've
- 2:52Speaker 2: got soap on my hands. I'm going back and forth.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'm hopeless. I'm hopeless when it comes to technology. But
- 2:57Speaker 2: we were all hopeless. We were all looking around, and
- 3:00Speaker 2: here comes Chris Hoke stepping up, leading us through like
- 3:04Speaker 2: Moses to the promised land, man. Got us through the airport.
- 3:07Speaker 2: If it wasn't for Hokey, we might still be in
- 3:09Speaker 2: Paris right now.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so I was with Hokey for a flag football
- 3:17Speaker 4: event at the Eiffel Tower, and I actually reposted it
- 3:20Speaker 4: on my ex-account, MaxDark78.
- 3:22Speaker 3: If anybody wants to know.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I do.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And– And it was showing that, and Hokie was talking
- 3:29Speaker 4: in French on it as we were talking to all
- 3:31Speaker 4: these young flag football youth. And Hokie was in his element.
- 3:36Speaker 4: He was yelling at the kids. He was egging them on,
- 3:39Speaker 4: and then he was cheering them on and getting into
- 3:41Speaker 4: it and just speaking to the moderator. They were talking
- 3:46Speaker 4: in French, and I was just like, whatever Hokie says,
- 3:49Speaker 4: I'm following it. So I just said that, and of course,
- 3:52Speaker 4: He also led me to an amazing boulanger that was
- 3:56Speaker 4: there across from our hotel.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And we had the most amazing pastries.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I had this ham and Swiss quiche and this stuffed
- 4:06Speaker 4: croissant that were just absolutely phenomenal.
- 4:09Speaker 3: He's like, no, you got to go there.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I talked to her on Thursday and she said she
- 4:13Speaker 4: was going to close on Friday because they were baking
- 4:16Speaker 4: all the stuff fresh for Saturday.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I was like, what?
- 4:19Speaker 4: And he goes in there and he's like, Bonjour, bonsoir, bonjour, bonjour.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I was like, I'm with him.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So through the grapevine, that got passed to me. So
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's hard to get a bad meal in France. You
- 4:37Speaker 2: could say that in Paris, I mean. You could say
- 4:39Speaker 2: that about New York City, too. You could say that
- 4:41Speaker 2: about a lot.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Of big cities.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's hard to get a bad meal. There's competitions too fierce.
- 4:45Speaker 2: They just can't stay in business. But the boulangerie deal...
- 4:49Speaker 2: So we went out. We went to a place across
- 4:51Speaker 2: the street. It was fine. It wasn't unbelievable. It was fine.
- 4:54Speaker 2: But I got two hokey recommended places. So the boulangerie
- 4:58Speaker 2: came down to me via the long group chat that
- 5:03Speaker 2: we all have, the radio group together. And so Saturday night,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm working, and it's raining out, and I'm watching my tape,
- 5:11Speaker 2: and I'm getting my notes together, and it's getting to
- 5:14Speaker 2: be like 8 o'clock, and I'm like, I haven't eaten.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I've got to get something to eat. And that boulangerie
- 5:19Speaker 2: was open until 9. That's what I had for dinner.
- 5:22Speaker 2: That long croissant. It wasn't a croissant. Flat French bread. Baguette.
- 5:29Speaker 2: With a little bit of ham and cheese. Not too much.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Not overwhelming.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I housed it. It was phenomenal. And by the way,
- 5:36Speaker 2: our esteemed producer Dan Quinlan and his wife Lauren, we
- 5:39Speaker 2: were walking around on Friday night. That was a work
- 5:42Speaker 2: during the day. Go out Friday, went to Notre Dame
- 5:45Speaker 2: and walked around a little bit to take in some
- 5:47Speaker 2: of the sights. he got a, like a foot long,
- 5:53Speaker 2: but the foot long is on French bread, which is
- 5:56Speaker 2: incredible and stuffed with chicken and tomatoes and mozzarella. Five 50,
- 6:05Speaker 2: five 50. Okay. Let's translate euros into dollars. Six, six bucks.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Six bucks. Um, and you can get yourself filled. You
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't have to, go to the elite French restaurants to
- 6:19Speaker 2: get a great meal there. You know what they do
- 6:22Speaker 2: over there, Willie and Max? Food is important to them.
- 6:26Speaker 2: It's important. So they make it well, and we get
- 6:30Speaker 2: to go over there and eat it. And that was
- 6:32Speaker 2: kind of a– we haven't talked football yet, Willie. We've
- 6:36Speaker 2: just been talking food right now. And Chris Hoke's amazing ability,
- 6:41Speaker 2: his fluency in French, getting us through the airport.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Oh, really? Yeah. Lee Chris Hoke?
- 6:47Speaker 2: The Chris Hoke. The food being good was not a surprise.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Go ahead. The food being good was not a surprise.
- 6:56Speaker 2: The Chris Hoke thing, Max, that got me. I didn't
- 6:59Speaker 2: know that was coming.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I was doing a flag football camp with Hokey and Jermani.
- 7:08Speaker 4: When I tell you, Hokey was talking to every single
- 7:10Speaker 4: human being over there in French.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Laughing and joking and yelling at people.
- 7:16Speaker 4: It was amazing to see. I mean, it was, you know, granted,
- 7:20Speaker 4: I did not know a single word he was saying.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Sure.
- 7:23Speaker 3: But everybody was laughing and was positive. So I was like,
- 7:25Speaker 3: he must be good at this.
- 7:27Speaker 5: So is Hokey, did we not know Hokey's French?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Is Hokey a French name?
- 7:32Speaker 2: No, he did two years of mission work over there.
- 7:37Speaker 3: He was in Belgium and the French region. No way. Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 5: You think he know a guy?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, you think you know a guy.
- 7:48Speaker 4: He's not only a shoky All-American, he's also a Frenchie.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Man, all this time, I thought Hoke was just some
- 7:57Speaker 6: mountain man from out in Mormon country, just living the
- 8:02Speaker 6: good life, and here he is just dropping French on
- 8:04Speaker 6: folks on a Saturday and a Friday.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:09Speaker 3: The parley boo was Franson.
- 8:11Speaker 5: There you go.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Hey, uh, Willie, what was your overall perceptions? Because obviously
- 8:17Speaker 2: we were there. And I don't know how– I don't
- 8:21Speaker 2: know if you had a chance to see much of it.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Obviously you've got your own stuff going on. But I
- 8:25Speaker 2: would be interested to know what the atmosphere and everything
- 8:29Speaker 2: looked like through the TV. And then just sort of
- 8:32Speaker 2: your general thoughts on the Steelers winning the game.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it was interesting.
- 8:37Speaker 6: So I was actually up– working out when I was
- 8:41Speaker 6: able to turn up the game. So I was able
- 8:43Speaker 6: to get a good poor chunk of the game on,
- 8:46Speaker 6: on the screen before I, you know, attended my other,
- 8:50Speaker 6: my other job.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Nevertheless, man, it looked, it looked like.
- 8:53Speaker 3: A festival, right? Like sometimes I think when.
- 8:55Speaker 6: We watch these teams go overseas to play in whatever country,
- 9:00Speaker 6: it looks like, what can you say?
- 9:03Speaker 5: It looks like, all right, this is an event that's
- 9:04Speaker 5: happening here and whatever.
- 9:06Speaker 6: But this, it felt like I was looking at a
- 9:08Speaker 6: live concert, in France, right? It just looked like a
- 9:12Speaker 6: melody of just two fan bases that both one have
- 9:16Speaker 6: the same colors to some degree. The only thing that
- 9:20Speaker 6: separated the Saints fans from the Steelers fans was obviously
- 9:22Speaker 6: the terrible towels. And seeing a sea of terrible towels
- 9:26Speaker 6: was something I was used to, but it looked.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Massive on TV. It was interesting. People who attended the game,
- 9:33Speaker 5: because I was able to talk since the game. I
- 9:35Speaker 5: was able to talk to two of my buddies. As
- 9:37Speaker 5: you know.
- 9:38Speaker 6: Down here, Mississippi where I'm currently at there's two fan
- 9:41Speaker 6: bases there's three really there's Steelers Saints and Cowboys uh
- 9:44Speaker 6: so I was fortunate enough to talk to two people
- 9:47Speaker 6: who actually went to the game and they said the
- 9:50Speaker 6: Saints fans showed up in droves as well and how
- 9:54Speaker 6: they really immersed you know, obviously the whole French culture
- 9:57Speaker 6: is immersed into the Saints culture, but it was, it
- 10:00Speaker 6: was interesting to see or hear from their eyes, how like,
- 10:04Speaker 6: it felt like one big, like a four day party.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Like the game was just kind of like the cherry
- 10:11Speaker 6: on top, but for like four, three or four days,
- 10:14Speaker 6: four to three days, it just seemed like it was
- 10:16Speaker 6: just one big party and, And the fan base got along.
- 10:19Speaker 6: On TV, it looked like I was watching those. I
- 10:22Speaker 6: don't know if there's an all-access channel where you see
- 10:24Speaker 6: those concerts out in Europe where they'd be waving the
- 10:27Speaker 6: flags in a crowd and everybody's shirtless and they're singing.
- 10:30Speaker 6: It looked like one of those things. And so it
- 10:33Speaker 6: was fun.
- 10:34Speaker 5: It was fun.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It looked like a fun event.
- 10:35Speaker 6: And it's always good when the Steelers– by the way,
- 10:37Speaker 6: I love the Steelers uniforms. I know some people have
- 10:39Speaker 6: some pushback on them.
- 10:41Speaker 5: I loved them. I thought they were great.
- 10:42Speaker 6: I loved the color combination and the fact that the
- 10:45Speaker 6: boys won with them on Just adds extra good juju. Nevertheless, man,
- 10:50Speaker 6: it looked great on TV. It was good to see
- 10:52Speaker 6: old man Rodgers use his wheels. I thought one thing
- 10:55Speaker 6: that happened that was good for the Steelers, still a
- 10:59Speaker 6: nation to see, was that the depth showed up in
- 11:03Speaker 6: this game. That the quality of our depth arose on
- 11:07Speaker 6: both sides of the ball. to see why they have
- 11:10Speaker 6: a great game, to see, you know, because we were
- 11:13Speaker 6: out there at Harmon, you know what I mean? And
- 11:15Speaker 6: we were out some guys to see our depth step up.
- 11:18Speaker 6: And me and Max talked about this all the time.
- 11:20Speaker 6: You know, it's good to see your stars and your
- 11:22Speaker 6: ones play well because they get paid to do so
- 11:24Speaker 6: and they're starters for a reason. But when you see
- 11:26Speaker 6: the quality of depth step up and have an impact
- 11:29Speaker 6: in the game, um I was I was happy to
- 11:31Speaker 6: see that and it was good to see our defensive
- 11:33Speaker 6: line step.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Up too um in a major way and really own
- 11:37Speaker 5: a line.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Of scrimmage I thought both sides of the line our
- 11:39Speaker 6: interior line showed up I thought I often for Tano
- 11:41Speaker 6: and and Max kind of had a little bit of
- 11:43Speaker 6: a spotty day you know sometimes that happens but I
- 11:47Speaker 6: thought our interior of our offensive line played really well
- 11:49Speaker 6: and I thought our defensive line led by Cam Haywood
- 11:52Speaker 6: played really well as well so I was I was
- 11:54Speaker 6: happy with that man and you can't talk enough about
- 11:57Speaker 6: Peyton Wilson. You can't talk about Patrick Wayne had a
- 11:59Speaker 6: big day defensively. And it was good to see, um,
- 12:03Speaker 6: I defense from this standpoint, just like, so I felt
- 12:06Speaker 6: like this, I thought the saints only were able to
- 12:08Speaker 6: capitalize on us when they attacked our structure. It wasn't
- 12:12Speaker 6: guys getting beat one-on-one.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:14Speaker 5: Does that make sense?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Um, and so that was, that was, that was good
- 12:19Speaker 6: to see, but overall, man, offensively, I feel like we
- 12:22Speaker 6: did what we need to do. It was good to
- 12:23Speaker 6: see DK have some big catches, um, And.
- 12:28Speaker 5: For a game, it was weird.
- 12:30Speaker 6: The Steelers only won by six, but it felt like
- 12:32Speaker 6: they won by more watching it. But overall, man, it
- 12:36Speaker 6: was great momentum because I can't tell you, I say
- 12:38Speaker 6: this with every breath in my body, I want the Browns.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I want the Browns. I want the Browns. I want
- 12:44Speaker 6: the Browns. And I hope every man in the Steelers
- 12:47Speaker 6: helmet feels the same way. Serve me the Browns on
- 12:50Speaker 6: a silver plate with all the gravy because.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I'm ready to eat.
- 12:54Speaker 5: And that's how they should feel going into this week.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I love it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: So here's what we're going to do. We're going to
- 12:59Speaker 2: take a break now. Sorry we got started just a
- 13:01Speaker 2: little bit late. We still want to talk, I think
- 13:03Speaker 2: Max and I particularly, but I was so glad to
- 13:06Speaker 2: hear what Willie had to say about it. We'll just
- 13:08Speaker 2: kind of wrap up the atmosphere there because it was
- 13:10Speaker 2: an historic game. It was the first game ever played
- 13:14Speaker 2: in the country of France in an NFL game. And
- 13:17Speaker 2: the Steelers have now been part of history twice. I mean,
- 13:19Speaker 2: they were the first ever regular season game in Dublin
- 13:21Speaker 2: last year. They were the first ever NFL game in
- 13:25Speaker 2: the country of France this year. And there's some things
- 13:28Speaker 2: to get to. But we also want to talk about
- 13:30Speaker 2: some of the things Willie just laid out as far
- 13:32Speaker 2: as the fine performances. And obviously, we're going to be
- 13:35Speaker 2: spending a lot of time this week getting you ready
- 13:37Speaker 2: for the Cleveland Browns. So more still to come. We
- 13:39Speaker 2: continue in the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 13:49Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio, brought to you
- 13:56Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 14:00Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 14:08Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 14:12Speaker 2: And welcome back inside the locker room. And we thank
- 14:15Speaker 2: you very much for being with us. Hope all is well.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And hope you guys are having a great day. We
- 14:20Speaker 2: wanted to talk a little bit about our experience in Paris.
- 14:24Speaker 2: And kind of the analogy that we talked about on
- 14:28Speaker 2: Friday during the show, Max, was that it was, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 2: Dublin's kind of like Pittsburgh. It's smaller. And so, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 2: it's a student's game is an event. Not saying a
- 14:39Speaker 2: Giants game isn't an event in New York City, but
- 14:42Speaker 2: there's so much else going on. It's so much bigger.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And that feeling of excitement you get from the entire
- 14:49Speaker 2: city in a Steelers game felt that way in Dublin.
- 14:52Speaker 2: It didn't really feel that way in Parrish because it's
- 14:55Speaker 2: just such a massive city. But I thought the atmosphere
- 14:58Speaker 2: was fabulous. The speakers in that joint were incredible. I mean,
- 15:02Speaker 2: the sound system, the music they had, the entertainment beforehand.
- 15:07Speaker 2: the anthems for the two countries, everything they did in
- 15:12Speaker 2: that regard, right down to some kind of rodent in
- 15:15Speaker 2: a beret during a commercial breakup on the big screen.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I had no idea what that was all about. But
- 15:21Speaker 2: there was just a lot to– I just thought that
- 15:23Speaker 2: the presentation of the game in stadium was absolutely fantastic.
- 15:29Speaker 3: No, it was an amazing– oh, sorry. No, no, no.
- 15:33Speaker 5: I apologize.
- 15:34Speaker 6: I just want to ask a question for both of
- 15:35Speaker 6: you because I know we kind of walk around in this,
- 15:37Speaker 6: rightfully so, but I just want to be a little
- 15:40Speaker 6: bit of a naughty boy, if you will. Was there
- 15:43Speaker 6: any sights of the riots? Did you guys ever feel
- 15:45Speaker 6: in danger of your lives during that process?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Nope. Let me just say this one more time. It
- 15:52Speaker 2: is a massive city.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Very, very big. Even when.
- 16:01Speaker 2: You know, like if there are riots in smaller cities,
- 16:04Speaker 2: you probably feel it more. If they're downtown and they're
- 16:07Speaker 2: looting and wrecking things, you know, don't go there, right?
- 16:12Speaker 2: That's harder when it's a smaller city. But a big
- 16:14Speaker 2: city like that, first of all, they tell you where
- 16:17Speaker 2: they're going to have their demonstrations. So on Thursday, they
- 16:21Speaker 2: were in the Bastille area. That's where they do it.
- 16:25Speaker 2: And if the police don't want you to do it,
- 16:27Speaker 2: they say, you can't do it. And then they say, okay, well,
- 16:29Speaker 2: we'll go do it somewhere else. Where can we have
- 16:31Speaker 2: our demonstration? There's give and take on it. I mean,
- 16:34Speaker 2: it's not as spontaneous as it is in America. And
- 16:38Speaker 2: I think if you're in that area and they're looting
- 16:43Speaker 2: and they're doing things like that, sure, you're worried. Your
- 16:47Speaker 2: storefront's getting smashed.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You're worried.
- 16:49Speaker 2: You're concerned it's going to spill over to you. But
- 16:52Speaker 2: by and large, I think it was... And then, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 2: on top of that, you know, there's not going to
- 16:58Speaker 2: be as much gun violence and that sort of thing.
- 17:01Speaker 2: So you're not as worried from that perspective, perhaps, in
- 17:05Speaker 2: a country like that because there aren't as many firearms
- 17:08Speaker 2: and that sort of stuff if you're somebody that worries
- 17:11Speaker 2: about that kind of thing. But largely, Willie, they tell
- 17:13Speaker 2: you where they're going to do it and everybody acts accordingly. So,
- 17:17Speaker 2: for example, some of the sites, some of the big
- 17:21Speaker 2: sites were closed because Like I think Notre Dame was
- 17:25Speaker 2: closed on Saturday because that's where the demonstration was. So
- 17:29Speaker 2: if you wanted to go to Notre Dame, you do
- 17:30Speaker 2: it on Friday. They just close it, you know. So
- 17:33Speaker 2: you just simply avoid it, you know. Like, I mean,
- 17:37Speaker 2: you're from New York. If there's a demonstration going on
- 17:40Speaker 2: in Brooklyn, it doesn't affect you. In Queens, it doesn't
- 17:42Speaker 2: affect you. In lower Manhattan, it doesn't affect you. In
- 17:45Speaker 2: the Bronx, you know, that's just the way it is.
- 17:47Speaker 2: It's a big city like that. And then let's face it.
- 17:50Speaker 2: You know, we've seen some unrest in our country, and
- 17:53Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit fresh for us. And also,
- 17:56Speaker 2: you know, look, I'm a defender of the media because
- 18:00Speaker 2: I'm in the media or have been for my whole
- 18:02Speaker 2: career and believe it's very important. But what they're going
- 18:05Speaker 2: to show you is going to make it look like
- 18:08Speaker 2: the whole city is being put to the torch, you know?
- 18:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And that's not accurate either. So there's a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 2: things involved. I didn't feel unsafe going over there. And
- 18:19Speaker 2: I never felt unsafe for one second.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I was there.
- 18:22Speaker 6: Well, you know, yeah, I think it was good for
- 18:24Speaker 6: our viewers to hear that side from you and Max,
- 18:27Speaker 6: because I think going into this game, there was so
- 18:29Speaker 6: much talk about, you know, the safety, the unrest, what
- 18:33Speaker 6: does the city look like, the conditions, the political atmosphere,
- 18:37Speaker 6: how bad was it? There were so many questions diving
- 18:39Speaker 6: into this game and the NFL itself was put into
- 18:41Speaker 6: question on like, how are you sending our boys to,
- 18:44Speaker 6: you know, historic teams to some degree, um, on center
- 18:48Speaker 6: stage when the city, you know, through the TV, through
- 18:51Speaker 6: the television screen looks like the, you know, France is
- 18:54Speaker 6: on fire.
- 18:55Speaker 5: So it was good. It's good to hear that side
- 18:56Speaker 5: of it. And it's good to hear. Like I said,
- 18:58Speaker 5: I've talked to people.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Who attended game who attended the game and they said,
- 19:03Speaker 6: you know, it was, it was fine.
- 19:04Speaker 5: They didn't really see or hear anything or, or felt
- 19:07Speaker 5: like they, you know, there was trouble that was lurking close.
- 19:11Speaker 6: So it was good to hear that all as well,
- 19:13Speaker 6: considering that Roger Goodell since the game has said he
- 19:15Speaker 6: wants to expand, into other countries.
- 19:18Speaker 5: So it's good that things are going well overseas.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Max, do you feel the same way? Just not, it never,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and you know, look, I've traveled a lot too. I've
- 19:28Speaker 2: been fortunate enough to travel a lot. It's something that's
- 19:30Speaker 2: important to me to travel. And for anybody that's traveling
- 19:34Speaker 2: anywhere internationally, if you haven't traveled a lot, use your head.
- 19:39Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like, you have more, this
- 19:43Speaker 2: isn't a guarantee of success, but you have more concerns
- 19:48Speaker 2: at two o'clock in the morning than you do at
- 19:50Speaker 2: two o'clock in the afternoon.
- 19:52Speaker 3: You do.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You have more concerns around tourist areas. Watch yourself. A
- 19:57Speaker 2: lot of pickpocketing and things like that going on in
- 20:01Speaker 2: a lot of these sites in European countries. You have
- 20:04Speaker 2: to be very careful. Have your head in a swivel,
- 20:07Speaker 2: that sort of thing. I'm not saying that any city,
- 20:09Speaker 2: New York City, you go in the wrong place. Even
- 20:11Speaker 2: if you don't go in the wrong place. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 2: any city, there could be issues. Just be cognizant of
- 20:18Speaker 2: those issues if you're traveling. But I've traveled enough that
- 20:21Speaker 2: I just wasn't, it didn't, I wasn't concerned about it
- 20:24Speaker 2: going over. And I never saw anything that would have
- 20:27Speaker 2: concerned me while I was there.
- 20:31Speaker 4: I sat at the Trocadero, top of the stairs, robbed.
- 20:39Speaker 3: At about 12.30 a.m. the night before our game, staring
- 20:43Speaker 3: at the Eiffel Tower. No issues. Like, that's the epitome
- 20:49Speaker 3: of it. I mean, there was not a single thing.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I know that at one point when I was.
- 20:54Speaker 4: On the train, because I took the train right from
- 20:58Speaker 4: where we were in.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Etoile all the way out to Val d'Europe to.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Varney Chessie to park Disneyland, right? Which is Disneyland Paris.
- 21:12Speaker 3: No issues. One stop got skipped. The Charles de Gaulle
- 21:15Speaker 3: stop got, got skipped. That was it. Like I didn't,
- 21:19Speaker 3: I didn't see anything. I didn't feel anything.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I know that the demonstrations on Saturday were about six
- 21:25Speaker 4: miles South of where we were. And yes, it was
- 21:28Speaker 4: a hundred thousand people, but once again, You know, if
- 21:33Speaker 4: you if you know, because it's preplanned, you have to
- 21:36Speaker 4: get accepted by the city council where you could demonstrate
- 21:39Speaker 4: like you explained. The police and the city council say
- 21:42Speaker 4: yes or no, where you are allowed to go and
- 21:44Speaker 4: where you're not allowed to go. It's not V for
- 21:46Speaker 4: Vendetta popping up like people just show up in masks
- 21:50Speaker 4: and all of a sudden start looting and rioting.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So, yeah, it was just it was it was a non-issue.
- 21:58Speaker 3: the entire time I was there, you know, and I
- 22:01Speaker 3: felt him.
- 22:02Speaker 4: We walked around, you know, together, and, yeah, I didn't
- 22:05Speaker 4: feel it, didn't even sense it.
- 22:08Speaker 2: So I got to tell you guys something. So last
- 22:09Speaker 2: year after the game in Dublin at Croke Park, my
- 22:12Speaker 2: family was over there. And so it was my, sorry, Schaefer,
- 22:19Speaker 2: junior club reporter for the locker room was not there.
- 22:22Speaker 2: But my daughter was there. She flew over from Scotland.
- 22:24Speaker 2: My wife was there. My wife's sister was there. So
- 22:26Speaker 2: we left Croke Park. And we're following their on-foot directions
- 22:29Speaker 2: to walk back into the city. And we're going to
- 22:32Speaker 2: go out and we're going to go out to dinner.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And they took us through this little neighborhood. And my
- 22:37Speaker 2: antenna went up immediately. I'm like, this is not the
- 22:41Speaker 2: part of Dublin we want to be in at all.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And my daughter's looking around. Oh, look at this. I'm like, Cooper,
- 22:47Speaker 2: keep your head down and keep walking. So we walked through.
- 22:50Speaker 2: It was only like three blocks. But I'm like, let's go, people.
- 22:53Speaker 2: This is a bad. We got bad directions here. So
- 22:56Speaker 2: that night we're in a cab and we're talking to
- 22:57Speaker 2: the cabbie about, hey, where do you, you know, where
- 23:01Speaker 2: are the places that you would avoid, you know? And,
- 23:03Speaker 2: you know, Temple Bar late at night, you know, that
- 23:05Speaker 2: kind of thing. And he goes, yeah, there's this one
- 23:07Speaker 2: little place, you know, there's this bar called Nocturse. And
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm like, man, we walked right by, right by that place, man.
- 23:14Speaker 2: And we just kept on going. We hit the one
- 23:16Speaker 2: area that you couldn't go to. We walked right down
- 23:20Speaker 2: the middle of it.
- 23:20Speaker 3: So.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You know, again, if you're going, man, just be careful
- 23:23Speaker 2: and be cognizant of where you're going and what you're doing.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I will say this, just to get back, and thank
- 23:31Speaker 2: you for asking, Willie. And I know a lot of
- 23:33Speaker 2: people are concerned about that, and there was a lot
- 23:35Speaker 2: of attention on the NFL for that. But, Max, the entertainment,
- 23:39Speaker 2: the sound systems, like I said, the anthems, everything they
- 23:43Speaker 2: did in stadium. That sound system was rocking, man. Whoa.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Everything they did within the stadium was absolutely amazing. first class,
- 23:51Speaker 2: as far as the presentation of the game itself. That's
- 23:54Speaker 2: the way it felt to me, Max.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it was a world-class stadium.
- 23:58Speaker 3: I mean, you see why that stadium was.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Built for World Cup, and it's a national stadium, and
- 24:06Speaker 4: it was just phenomenal. I mean, the entrance, the egress,
- 24:11Speaker 4: everything was smooth, beautiful venue, and like you said, I mean,
- 24:16Speaker 4: that sound system, it was like piping to the top,
- 24:18Speaker 4: so it actually reminded me When we were at Highmark,
- 24:21Speaker 4: remember Buffalo, when Buffalo opened?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 3: We were up there for the preseason game.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Similar sound system where the speakers are all right up there,
- 24:30Speaker 4: capping those canopies, cover just the seating area, and then
- 24:35Speaker 4: it opens up for the field. And they had the
- 24:38Speaker 4: speakers lined around the top, so everything was just right there.
- 24:42Speaker 4: The sound penetrated. You felt like you were immersed in
- 24:45Speaker 4: the stadium. And then, of course, like you said, having, like,
- 24:49Speaker 4: A second line band and a jazz band from New
- 24:52Speaker 4: Orleans playing in there gave you the party festival atmosphere.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Their DJ that they brought in from New Orleans had
- 25:00Speaker 4: the tunes rocking. I was singing every single song because
- 25:04Speaker 4: it was all of my era.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Willie, you would have been proud.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I mean, they was playing every type of 90s to
- 25:11Speaker 4: early 2000s cash money, no.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Limit records hits.
- 25:16Speaker 4: In there, I was like, man, I was bobbing my head,
- 25:18Speaker 4: dancing up and down the steps. I had the ESPN
- 25:21Speaker 4: guys yelling at me, like, hey, Max, man, watch your step, man.
- 25:23Speaker 3: We don't want you to fall. I'm like, nah, I
- 25:25Speaker 3: got this. I got this.
- 25:27Speaker 5: You ain't going to stop.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Me from rocking Juvenile right now and Mystical.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:34Speaker 6: So it sounds like we're in alignment. I'm telling you,
- 25:36Speaker 6: on TV, it looked like a big, big party. It
- 25:39Speaker 6: looked like a festival. Like I said, so it's good
- 25:42Speaker 6: that you're saying it, and I saw it in the
- 25:44Speaker 6: same frame, because I think if you're starting to expand
- 25:49Speaker 6: the game internationally, you have to give the fans something
- 25:53Speaker 6: to say, you know what, I want to be a
- 25:54Speaker 6: part of that. Because, yeah, the game, and that's good.
- 25:58Speaker 6: You want to go support your respective team. But you
- 26:02Speaker 6: also want to be a part of something that you say, man,
- 26:05Speaker 6: I was in Tokyo when the Bills played the Niners
- 26:08Speaker 6: and the game was da-da-da-da-da. But, you know, the city
- 26:11Speaker 6: itself was rocking. You want the experience to be bigger
- 26:15Speaker 6: than the game. And that's the way it looked like
- 26:17Speaker 6: on TV, and it's good that you guys We're able
- 26:20Speaker 6: to share those same memories and thoughts.
- 26:22Speaker 2: So I got to go back about 40 years before
- 26:25Speaker 2: Max on the music front. But if I could sum
- 26:29Speaker 2: up quickly my– and this is not universal, of course.
- 26:34Speaker 2: You like what you like, right? But the difference between, like,
- 26:39Speaker 2: R & B and funk is, to me, the difference
- 26:44Speaker 2: between Hey Pocky Way by the Neville Brothers– and Hey
- 26:50Speaker 2: Pocky Way by the Wild Chapatulas. A couple of the
- 26:53Speaker 2: Neville brothers were in the Wild Chapatulas, and they played
- 26:56Speaker 2: the Wild Chapatulas. I was a happy guy. They played
- 27:00Speaker 2: the Wild Chapatulas version of Hey Pocky Way. So that's it.
- 27:04Speaker 2: So Max was happy. I was happy. Everybody was happy.
- 27:08Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 27:09Speaker 5: I'm glad.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Yeah, they had.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Something for everybody in between. So, yeah, and I'll say this, Willie. Yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 4: it created– I'm.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Glad because it felt like a FOMO type of deal, right,
- 27:18Speaker 3: when I was talking to people.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Like, man, you're over there, you know, and then even
- 27:22Speaker 4: just coming back, like, um, my daughter's had a volleyball
- 27:26Speaker 4: clinic and I had some of my Paris gear on
- 27:29Speaker 4: because I was a walking zombie yesterday.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Cause it was, it was, you know, it was an
- 27:35Speaker 3: eight hour time zone difference.
- 27:36Speaker 4: And I was, I was, I was, I was traveling
- 27:39Speaker 4: for 14 hours.
- 27:40Speaker 3: So I was, I was a whole, I was like,
- 27:42Speaker 3: this is the only thing I have. I know that's clean.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Cause I'm still wearing it.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Um, Oh, my God, man, we saw it because they
- 27:50Speaker 4: had it on because, you know, it was on at
- 27:52Speaker 4: 630 a.m. You know, local time in Arizona and they
- 27:56Speaker 4: had it on in the gym.
- 27:57Speaker 3: There was it, man.
- 27:58Speaker 4: It looked like a party over there. So what you're
- 28:00Speaker 4: saying was truly true about that. Man, I wish I
- 28:04Speaker 4: would have been there. Like it created that FOMO. So
- 28:06Speaker 4: like you said, opening new venues, you want to create
- 28:11Speaker 4: that environment.
- 28:11Speaker 3: You want to.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Encapsulate that like what we had in Ireland. how that
- 28:15Speaker 4: was just a big affair. And you felt like if
- 28:17Speaker 4: you were a Steeler fan, you missed out because you weren't.
- 28:20Speaker 3: In Ireland because everybody else was there in Ireland, it
- 28:22Speaker 3: felt like. And the same thing here in Paris. So
- 28:25Speaker 3: two years in a row you have that FOMO type
- 28:28Speaker 3: of atmosphere.
- 28:28Speaker 4: So I think it makes it even more of a
- 28:32Speaker 4: fun time to make sure that you're just like, okay,
- 28:34Speaker 4: we've got to get there next year.
- 28:36Speaker 2: From what I could tell, Saints fans and Steelers fans
- 28:40Speaker 2: got along great. I thought the Saints fans were fabulous.
- 28:42Speaker 2: There was a bunch of them in our hotel. And
- 28:44Speaker 2: by the way, our buddy Matt Williamson has a lot
- 28:48Speaker 2: of good things to say about Tyler Shuck. And watching
- 28:50Speaker 2: him on video, you can see why. If he can
- 28:52Speaker 2: limit the mistakes a little bit, he's got all the
- 28:55Speaker 2: talent he needs. I'll tell you what. I think I'm
- 28:59Speaker 2: going to go on early record. The Browns are my
- 29:02Speaker 2: comeback team this year. I'm going on early record and
- 29:06Speaker 2: saying if they make a couple of moves, the Saints
- 29:11Speaker 2: are going to be a handful next year. They're going
- 29:13Speaker 2: to get their left tackle back. They're going to get
- 29:15Speaker 2: two other starting offensive linemen back. They're going to get
- 29:18Speaker 2: A-Chan back at running back. They're going to get Jordan
- 29:21Speaker 2: Tyson at wide receiver. They shore up, maybe give me
- 29:24Speaker 2: one offensive lineman in the middle, and then you've got
- 29:27Speaker 2: to do something about that defense. But if you could
- 29:29Speaker 2: get one guy in the middle of that offensive line
- 29:31Speaker 2: and then go out on free agency and sign three
- 29:34Speaker 2: or four guys, I think the Saints could be– I
- 29:37Speaker 2: think they could be a handful next year.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 29:40Speaker 6: I don't think anybody is going to second guess or
- 29:43Speaker 6: challenge that thought process at all because I said that
- 29:47Speaker 6: watching them last year when they were down in the
- 29:49Speaker 6: dumps and how they responded the last five years of
- 29:51Speaker 6: the season going into this season, going into Baltimore and
- 29:54Speaker 6: winning in Baltimore in the fashion they wanted in a
- 29:57Speaker 6: scrappy fashion.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Showing up in the fourth quarter of that game.
- 30:00Speaker 6: And then, yes, as of late, they've just been in
- 30:03Speaker 6: some dogfights, and to your point, they've lost because of
- 30:07Speaker 6: some self-inflicted wounds. But when you look at the skeleton
- 30:10Speaker 6: of how that team's built and the fact that nobody
- 30:12Speaker 6: knew who the hell Tyler Shuck was, and not only
- 30:15Speaker 6: do people feel they have, like he's the guy for
- 30:18Speaker 6: the job, you can see the ceiling, right?
- 30:20Speaker 5: You know there's a high ceiling with this dude.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I agree.
- 30:22Speaker 6: Now you start building around him.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Now you're saying hold up.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Oh, there you go.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You're back, Willie. We lost you for a second.
- 30:30Speaker 5: I'm sorry. Overall, you start to look at this team differently.
- 30:36Speaker 6: I think it starts with the quarterback. I know there's
- 30:38Speaker 6: been some rumblings about Kellen Moore, if he's the guy,
- 30:41Speaker 6: if he's not the guy.
- 30:42Speaker 5: Everybody breathe.
- 30:44Speaker 6: Can we stop with being in this It's different here.
- 30:47Speaker 6: It's different in New York because there's legitimate questions about
- 30:50Speaker 6: Aaron Glenn. But around the league, anytime a coach or
- 30:52Speaker 6: a team goes through a dry spell, meaning they're not
- 30:55Speaker 6: winning games consistently, but they're still competitive, it's not a
- 30:59Speaker 6: calling to fire a head coach.
- 31:00Speaker 5: You get what I'm saying? Football is a hard game
- 31:03Speaker 5: to be successful at. It's a tough team sport. You
- 31:06Speaker 5: watched the Eagles and Cowboys last year. Excuse me. I apologize.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Last night.
- 31:11Speaker 6: And you look at the Eagles injury report. It was
- 31:15Speaker 6: as long as the, as a damn Denny's menu.
- 31:17Speaker 5: So you have to, you have to, we have to like,
- 31:21Speaker 5: I don't know where this came from or when it
- 31:24Speaker 5: started that every time a.
- 31:25Speaker 6: Team goes through a patch where it's just bad football.
- 31:28Speaker 6: And then sometimes you're just going to go against an
- 31:30Speaker 6: opposition that's better than you. But when you look at
- 31:32Speaker 6: a team fighting and scrapping and getting mature and growing
- 31:35Speaker 6: maturity gas games go on and, You start to see
- 31:38Speaker 6: positive things.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Support the team and support the coach. Stop dumping coaches
- 31:42Speaker 5: thinking a new one is going to save the day.
- 31:43Speaker 5: It's not always the case. Does it happen?
- 31:45Speaker 3: Sure.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Not everybody's Ben Johnson, by the way. Just not.
- 31:50Speaker 6: I hate that we, in the sports media world, we
- 31:54Speaker 6: see a coach that don't have early success.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Fire him.
- 31:58Speaker 6: Let's get a new guy in there. It's hard to
- 32:00Speaker 6: get a new coach and a new coach who's right
- 32:02Speaker 6: for the job and for the city. So we've got
- 32:04Speaker 6: to breathe a little bit. So I think Kellen Moore
- 32:06Speaker 6: is going to be fine. I hope he's fine down there.
- 32:08Speaker 2: For every Vince Lombardi that comes in and makes– or
- 32:10Speaker 2: Ben Johnson that makes an immediate impact, there's also a
- 32:13Speaker 2: Bill Parcells and a Jimmy Johnson, a couple guys who
- 32:16Speaker 2: are in Canton who had early struggles in their careers.
- 32:18Speaker 2: So well put, Max.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Correct, correct.
- 32:20Speaker 2: All right, stick around. We have Willie.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I beg your pardon. Well put, Willie.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I think Max and I are still a little dazed.
- 32:27Speaker 5: From our trip overseas.
- 32:29Speaker 2: We'll be back at full speed tomorrow, but we have
- 32:32Speaker 2: much to talk about. I think Willie laid out a
- 32:35Speaker 2: really good idea of who we want to talk about
- 32:37Speaker 2: in this game. We're going to get to that when
- 32:39Speaker 2: we continue in the locker room here on the Steelers
- 32:41Speaker 2: Audio Network. We'll be right back.
- 32:49Speaker 1: This is in the locker room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 32:54Speaker 1: and Willie Cologne on Steelers nation radio brought to you
- 32:57Speaker 1: in part by a Steelers pro shop. Get it direct
- 33:00Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers pro shop at shop.steelers.com
- 33:05Speaker 1: and by your neighborhood Ford store. The F one 50
- 33:08Speaker 1: is the official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 33:13Speaker 2: And welcome back inside the locker room. You know, um,
- 33:17Speaker 2: You've got to admire. Sometimes you just have to give
- 33:19Speaker 2: a shout-out. This one goes to the aforementioned junior cub reporter,
- 33:24Speaker 2: Schaefer King, not part of the Ireland trip last year,
- 33:28Speaker 2: but unselfishly bringing to my attention the fact that Quentin
- 33:33Speaker 2: Nelson has been traded from the Colts to the Seahawks.
- 33:37Speaker 2: That is a big move. Yeah. How about that?
- 33:41Speaker 4: Wild.
- 33:44Speaker 2: That's a big trade.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 4: I mean, when you think about this, think about where
- 33:48Speaker 4: they were a year ago and all the picks they
- 33:50Speaker 4: traded to the Jets for Sauce.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Gardner, right? They were all in.
- 33:55Speaker 4: And now you get to the midpoint of a year later,
- 34:00Speaker 4: similar timeframe, and you're unloading, I mean, essentially your best
- 34:06Speaker 4: offensive lineman and sending them to the defending Super Bowl
- 34:10Speaker 4: champions who just had a resounding victory in beat the
- 34:14Speaker 4: crap out of the kansas city chiefs.
- 34:18Speaker 3: The rich got richer and indianapolis has thrown up the
- 34:21Speaker 3: white flag once.
- 34:22Speaker 6: Again well the where the reality of it is they
- 34:26Speaker 6: realize the only form of offense they have is sam
- 34:30Speaker 6: donald to jsn and what helped them win that super
- 34:33Speaker 6: bowl last year wasn't Valley, he was an impact player,
- 34:37Speaker 6: and he was absolutely outstanding. But what stabilized that offense
- 34:41Speaker 6: was the run game with Kenneth Walker. They've struggled to
- 34:44Speaker 6: run the ball, and part of that offensive line is they've.
- 34:49Speaker 5: Had their issues.
- 34:50Speaker 6: So getting a consistent run game as you start to
- 34:53Speaker 6: build momentum into these later months, man, they don't want
- 34:58Speaker 6: Sam Donald throwing.
- 34:58Speaker 5: The ball 40.
- 34:59Speaker 6: He's capable of it, right, but they understand– Some of
- 35:03Speaker 6: his recent turnovers or the fact that he's been able
- 35:06Speaker 6: to turn over the ball consecutively in back to back
- 35:08Speaker 6: games is the fact they don't have a run game
- 35:10Speaker 6: that can propel the offense. And so so much of
- 35:13Speaker 6: him sitting in the well, having to dictate and decide
- 35:16Speaker 6: where to put the football. And they realize, like, man,
- 35:19Speaker 6: we got to take some of those bricks off his shoulders.
- 35:21Speaker 6: If we plan on getting back, we have a championship.
- 35:25Speaker 6: We have a championship defense and we have championship DNA
- 35:27Speaker 6: on this team. JSN is an outstanding player, but he
- 35:30Speaker 6: can't be the end-all, be-all.
- 35:32Speaker 5: For that Seahawks offense. So they realize, hey, man, we
- 35:34Speaker 5: got to attack the line.
- 35:35Speaker 6: We got to add some more beef, some high-quality beef, and.
- 35:39Speaker 5: We got to figure out how we can.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Run the ball.
- 35:41Speaker 6: Because they're also preying on Zach Charbonnet to get back
- 35:44Speaker 6: to what he was.
- 35:45Speaker 3: That's right.
- 35:46Speaker 6: Obviously, he's coming off of ACL. And then the kid,
- 35:49Speaker 6: Darion Price, I think he's dinged up as well. So
- 35:52Speaker 6: they realize, like, man, we got to show up this
- 35:55Speaker 6: office line. We got to get our run game back.
- 35:56Speaker 6: We got to take some of these bricks off Sam
- 35:57Speaker 6: Donald's shoulders, still feed GSN, but we need more balance
- 36:01Speaker 6: on this offense. So Quentin Nelson obviously adds that, uh,
- 36:05Speaker 6: I can't, I can't, I can't, I'm a little disturbed because,
- 36:08Speaker 6: you know, part of my Jets heart was hoping that
- 36:10Speaker 6: he could have landed on the Jets, uh, and help
- 36:13Speaker 6: that office in line. But nevertheless, man, good for Quentin Nelson.
- 36:16Speaker 6: He's going to a winner. Um, and he deserves it.
- 36:19Speaker 6: He's been playing on a high level for a long time.
- 36:21Speaker 2: So I, let me, um, uh, As Max is well aware, Willie,
- 36:28Speaker 2: the term draft capital is banned in the locker room.
- 36:31Speaker 2: They're draft picks, man. They're draft picks. God, that just
- 36:35Speaker 2: drives me bananas, man.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Draft capital. Come on, man.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Draft picks. They get a third and a fifth. A
- 36:43Speaker 2: third next year and a fifth the following year for
- 36:46Speaker 2: a guy who is, I think he's headed to the
- 36:48Speaker 2: Hall of Fame.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Max, agreed? Yeah, agreed. Agreed.
- 36:53Speaker 4: I think he's put together a hell of a career. And,
- 36:57Speaker 4: you know, he could have a nice capstone in Seattle. And,
- 37:01Speaker 4: you know, for third, for next year, and then, like
- 37:04Speaker 4: you said, the following year, that's nothing at this point
- 37:08Speaker 4: in the year to get a guy.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Of his ilk. Yep.
- 37:12Speaker 2: That's a big pickup. Which kind of leads me to
- 37:15Speaker 2: one of the subjects that I wanted to ask you
- 37:17Speaker 2: guys about. You know, you see this coming sometimes. And
- 37:21Speaker 2: it's fun when it's one of your guys. Wait a minute.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Can I make a quick aside here before this preamble?
- 37:29Speaker 2: What's wrong with inside linebacker? Why do we have to
- 37:33Speaker 2: call them off-ball linebackers?
- 37:37Speaker 3: Why is that?
- 37:37Speaker 5: I'm so happy you said that. I don't know, Rob.
- 37:40Speaker 5: And I'm glad.
- 37:42Speaker 6: You called it out because we have grown to really
- 37:47Speaker 6: rephrase and kind of I don't know if– and, Max,
- 37:50Speaker 6: maybe you're more in-depth in it.
- 37:52Speaker 5: I don't know if that affects the contract for a guy,
- 37:56Speaker 5: you know.
- 37:56Speaker 6: Because, you know, some guys– I remember the biggest thing
- 37:59Speaker 6: was going from defensive end to edge rusher was a
- 38:01Speaker 6: big thing compared to how you– you know what I mean?
- 38:05Speaker 6: So I don't know if that's a thing. Because at
- 38:08Speaker 6: the end of the day, it's an inside linebacker.
- 38:11Speaker 5: It's not an off-ball linebacker. It's an inside linebacker.
- 38:13Speaker 3: That's right.
- 38:14Speaker 5: I'm glad you called that out, bro.
- 38:16Speaker 2: That one bugs me. I got a few of them
- 38:20Speaker 2: that drive me nuts. Draft capital, the draft picks are fine.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Should we banish off-ball linebacker from the locker room? We
- 38:30Speaker 2: have a triumvirate right now. Should we agree right now?
- 38:32Speaker 3: I'm fine with banishing it.
- 38:34Speaker 4: It's more of a combine thing, separator, because, like you said,
- 38:40Speaker 4: you made the designation of the outside linebackers down edge rusher, right?
- 38:44Speaker 3: But that's in 3-4.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Because an outside linebacker is still your Sam and your
- 38:49Speaker 4: Wills in a 4-3 structure. But obviously we don't see
- 38:52Speaker 4: as much 4-3. So now to distinguish the on-the-ball outside
- 38:58Speaker 4: linebacker versus the off-the-ball outside linebacker, 3-4 versus 4-3, that's
- 39:04Speaker 4: why they're just trying to make it dumber or easier
- 39:07Speaker 4: when it comes to combine metrics, which then said, oh,
- 39:11Speaker 4: if we're going to change it at the combine– Let's
- 39:13Speaker 4: change it in the negotiating language of a contract.
- 39:17Speaker 3: The guy who plays closer to the line of scrimmage.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Makes more versus the guy that plays further from the
- 39:21Speaker 4: line of scrimmage.
- 39:22Speaker 3: Okay. Yeah, that's a good point. So that's where you
- 39:25Speaker 3: got it.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Are we tabling the vote or are we ready to vote?
- 39:29Speaker 2: Want to table it?
- 39:30Speaker 3: No, we're ready to vote. Okay.
- 39:32Speaker 2: All in favor of banishing off-the-ball linebacker inside the locker room,
- 39:38Speaker 2: say aye.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Aye. Aye.
- 39:41Speaker 5: Okay.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Banished. Finished.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Draft capital, off-the-ball linebacker, out.
- 39:49Speaker 3: In?
- 39:50Speaker 2: A guy who's getting attention as maybe one of the
- 39:52Speaker 2: best at his position in the NFL. We're going to
- 39:54Speaker 2: talk about that when we continue in the locker room
- 39:56Speaker 2: here on the Steelers Audio Network.
