- 0:00Happy Monday y'all, welcome to another episode, a new week.
- 0:05This is friendly and I am so grateful that you're here today.
- 0:09Whether this is your first time listening or you've been walking
- 0:12through this series on Matthew with me, I pray that this
- 0:16episode meets you right where you are and ministers to your
- 0:19heart. Over the past couple episodes, I
- 0:23intentionally broke up Matthew chapter 24, Jesus teaching about
- 0:28his return because there was so much weight in what he was
- 0:32saying and I did not want us to miss any of it.
- 0:36But I also do believe that this next passage in chapter 25 is a
- 0:41continuation of those conversations that we've seen
- 0:45now. It doesn't move away from the
- 0:47topic, it's pressing into it deeper.
- 0:50Jesus gives us a parable that is super practical, very sobering
- 0:55if we're honest, but very, very loving.
- 0:59He doesn't just tell us that he's coming back, He's showing
- 1:02us what readiness actually looks like.
- 1:06So with that, we are going to be in Matthew chapter 25 verses one
- 1:11through 13 when my coming draws near.
- 1:17Heaven's Kingdom realm can be compared to 10 maidens who took
- 1:21their oil lamps and went outside to meet the bridegroom and his
- 1:24bride. Five of them were foolish and
- 1:27ill prepared, for they took no extra oil for their lamps.
- 1:32Five of them were wise, for they took flasks of olive oil with
- 1:36their lamps. When the bridegroom didn't come
- 1:40when they expected, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep.
- 1:44Then suddenly, in the middle of the night, they were awakened by
- 1:47the shout. Get up, the bridegroom is here.
- 1:50Come out and have an encounter with him.
- 1:53So all the girls got up and trimmed their lamps, but the
- 1:56foolish ones were running out of oil.
- 1:58So they said to the five wise ones, share your oil with us
- 2:02because our lamps are going out. We can't, they replied.
- 2:06We don't have enough for all of us.
- 2:08You'll have to go and buy some for yourselves.
- 2:11While the five girls were out buying oil, the bridegroom
- 2:14appeared. Those who were ready and waiting
- 2:18were escorted inside with him in the wedding party to enjoy the
- 2:22feast. And then the door was locked.
- 2:26Later the five foolish girls came running up to the door and
- 2:29pleaded, Lord, Lord, let us come in.
- 2:32But He called back. Go away.
- 2:35Do I know you? I can assure you, I don't even
- 2:38know you. That is the reason you should
- 2:41always stay awake and be alert, because you do not know the day
- 2:45or the hour when the bridegroom will appear.
- 2:50OK, so in Matthew 24, we see Jesus describe believers in the
- 2:56end times as servants waiting for their master.
- 2:59But now he is shifting the imagery because in this chapter,
- 3:03believers are pictured as bridesmaids waiting for the
- 3:07bridegroom. And that matters because if you
- 3:10think about servants, he's emphasizing responsibility.
- 3:15But with a wedding and these maidens, these bridesmaids, he's
- 3:20emphasizing relationship now for cultural context of the wedding.
- 3:27Back then, a wedding ceremony typically happened at the
- 3:31bride's home and the groom would come to her.
- 3:34And after that, the celebration, often lasting in entire week of
- 3:38feasting, would take place at the groom's house.
- 3:42But The thing is, the groom was often delayed in coming to the
- 3:46wedding, so the bridesmaids were not told when exactly he was
- 3:50coming, only that he was coming and that he was on his way.
- 3:54Preparation mattered way more than proximity.
- 3:59Being close to the wedding did not secure a place in it.
- 4:03Being associated did not guarantee an entry.
- 4:08And it didn't matter who you were necessarily, what your
- 4:11family name, what your reputation or status was.
- 4:15And it parallels to the Kingdom of God because at the end of the
- 4:19day, that's not what matters. Our earthly titles, they do not
- 4:23last and sustain. So we know that weddings are not
- 4:29random in biblical context because Jesus's first miracle,
- 4:34turning water into wine, that happened at a wedding
- 4:37celebration. And Scripture is pointing in
- 4:41Revelation to the marriage of the lamb.
- 4:45It ends with a wedding. So when Jesus uses the wedding
- 4:49imagery here, he's directing us towards something bigger because
- 4:54history is moving us toward union.
- 4:58And a little side note, there was something that honestly made
- 5:02me emotional while reading and meditating on this passage.
- 5:07Because if you think about it, today, bridesmaids are usually
- 5:11the brides closest, dearest friends, the ones that she loves
- 5:15the most and trust and once closest to her on that special
- 5:19day. So that means in this parable,
- 5:24thinking about that the one shut out.
- 5:26They were not strangers, they were close.
- 5:29And that hit me hard because it reminds me that people I deeply
- 5:36care about, they can still miss the Kingdom if not personally
- 5:41prepared. And it stirred my faith in a
- 5:45fresh way because I do not want to shrink back because of fear
- 5:49of man or fear of approval. I want to love people enough to
- 5:53tell them the truth and to boldly proclaim the gospel to
- 5:57them. So going into the oil, because
- 6:02clearly that is very important in this passage, the difference
- 6:06between the wise and the foolish bridesmaids is what it came down
- 6:11to, that very substance. The oil represents the Holy
- 6:16Spirit here, His presence, His divine revelation, and His
- 6:21leading. Because all ten of these
- 6:26maidens, they were invited, all ten of them, they had lamps and
- 6:30they were waiting, but only five of them were filled.
- 6:35The wise did not just believe the groom was coming.
- 6:38They lived like he was coming. And it's pretty black and white
- 6:43whenever you read it. It does not leave middle ground
- 6:47because ultimately you're either ready or you're not.
- 6:52The door we see is either open or it's shut.
- 6:56And it sounds intense, but it's actually so merciful of the
- 7:01Father. Jesus is not being harsh.
- 7:04He's being honest because he cares and he wants to prepare us
- 7:08ahead of time so that we're saved.
- 7:11And I do want to go into just talking about how this spiritual
- 7:16preparation, one, it cannot be bought.
- 7:19You can't earn your way into the wedding.
- 7:22The oil was not what got the wise bridesmaids invited.
- 7:26It's what sustained them while they waited.
- 7:30We know we are saved by grace alone through faith.
- 7:35But our preparation, it demonstrates our faith in
- 7:40spiritual disciplines. They don't save us, they serve
- 7:44it. They serve our faith.
- 7:46So spending time in the Word daily and communicating with God
- 7:51through prayer, being surrounded by strong community and being in
- 7:55fellowship with believers, these things fan the flame.
- 8:00Paul urges Timothy, second Timothy 1/6, he says to fan and
- 8:05deflame the gift of God. And that's what spiritual
- 8:09disciplines do. They keep our faith alive.
- 8:12They keep it burning. And secondly, your spiritual
- 8:16preparation, it can't be borrowed.
- 8:19You can't borrow the oil as we see in this passage.
- 8:23It's not your parents faith. It's not your mentors, your
- 8:26friends, it's not because you were raised going to church or
- 8:31you know the right Christian things to say and respond with.
- 8:35Because every single one of us will stand individually before
- 8:39God and be held accountable for our actions and how we responded
- 8:45to the invitation. And Jesus will either say I know
- 8:49you or I don't. It is, yes, like it's heavy.
- 8:55It's real, though, and we have to consider this and intercede
- 9:00on behalf of other people who may not truly know this.
- 9:04So I want to go into the true heart of it right now.
- 9:09Do you know your bridegroom personally, not just about him?
- 9:15Do you know Him? And if you believe He's coming
- 9:18back for you, are you being faithful to Him right now?
- 9:22Does He have all of your attention and loyalty?
- 9:26Or are there other people, distractions, or habits
- 9:29competing for your devotion? Because a bride eagerly waits
- 9:34for her groom, and she does this by living expectantly, not
- 9:38distracted. And I also want to ask if the
- 9:42oil represents the Holy Spirit, are you welcoming His leading
- 9:46daily? Do you have enough oil?
- 9:50Ephesians 518 says to be filled with the Spirit.
- 9:55This is not a one time filling, it's a continually continual
- 9:59filling of His Spirit. So are you spiritually full or
- 10:04are you barely getting by? Because we were not made to just
- 10:08be acquainted with God. We were made to be in an
- 10:12intimate relationship. That means deep closeness in a
- 10:15shared life with Him. Y'all scripture even says First
- 10:20Corinthians 216. This verse is crazy.
- 10:25It says for who has ever intimately known the mind of the
- 10:28Lord well enough to become his counselor?
- 10:31Christ has and we possess Christ's perceptions.
- 10:38AK we have the same mind of Christ Jesus.
- 10:43That is not surface level faith, that is union with him.
- 10:48Now to round it out a little quick story.
- 10:51I was laughing the other day as I was telling my dad how I have
- 10:56been waiting until my car has been under 10 miles left before
- 11:01going to the gas station and filling it up.
- 11:04Now I thought it was funny. He did not think it was funny
- 11:07because he began to say OK, well what if there's an emergency?
- 11:11What if you need to go to the hospital and you have 5 miles of
- 11:14gas? And honestly, I realized, I know
- 11:18this is a silly parallel, but it made me think like I was just
- 11:23kind of being lazy. I didn't want to stop.
- 11:25I was procrastinating it. And on a deeper level
- 11:30spiritually, that's how I was living for a very big chunk of
- 11:35my life. Unfortunately.
- 11:37I would read my Bible a few times a week if I wasn't too
- 11:40tired at the end of the day. I would go to a small group on
- 11:44Wednesday nights. I would go to Sunday church,
- 11:47hear an incredible sermon, and think that those things would
- 11:50just carry me through. But The thing is, I was
- 11:53spiritually malnourished and I didn't even realize it.
- 11:58I wondered why I consistently felt so burnt out, why I was
- 12:03lacking purpose and what I was doing.
- 12:05Why I kept looking for fulfillment and people and
- 12:08things that never delivered or satisfied.
- 12:12But y'all everything changed when Jesus stopped being put on
- 12:17the back burner and he became the forefront of my mind in the
- 12:22center of my life. Now I live by the motto no
- 12:26Bible, no phone y'all I do. I do not open up social media,
- 12:31look at texts until I read scripture and prayer walks like
- 12:37they are so important to me every single day that I leave my
- 12:42phone behind and I go talk to my father, just me and him without
- 12:45distractions. And I'm not saying this for a
- 12:49little ego boost, like I am just simply giving y'all things that
- 12:54have helped not save me but supply me because they have kept
- 13:00my lamp burning. They have increased my awareness
- 13:04of the Spirit every single day and allowed Him to lead me step
- 13:08by step. And I just want to remind y'all,
- 13:11there's always more of God, there's always more oil, more of
- 13:15the Holy Spirit, more to seek. Matthew 77.
- 13:20Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking because the Lord wants
- 13:25to give you more of himself. So let me leave you with these
- 13:29few questions really quick. If Jesus returned today, would
- 13:33he find you faithfully waiting or spiritually running on empty?
- 13:39Are you placing confidence in someone else's faith or your own
- 13:44efforts and timing instead of God?
- 13:47What, if anything, is competing for your bridegroom's love and
- 13:52attention? So let's go ahead and finish out
- 13:57in prayer. Jesus, thank you for your
- 14:03radical love that is willing to warn us and prepare us.
- 14:10Would you show us any area of our lives where we are
- 14:13distracted? Would you fill us with just more
- 14:19of your Spirit? Allow us to be led by your
- 14:23Spirit in every single moment to not quench the Spirit, but to
- 14:27welcome You. Lord, may we live ready,
- 14:31faithful, devoted, expectant. Lord, we want to know you
- 14:39intimately. We don't want to surface level
- 14:42faith. We want to know you deeply.
- 14:46May we be found waiting when you return Jesus, whenever that is.
- 14:51We ask this all in your holy name, Jesus.
- 14:53Amen. OK, well that was a lot, but I'm
- 14:57hoping that y'all can take some things away and that it would
- 15:03encourage you to be bold ambassadors of the King and to
- 15:07prepare for his return. And praying for y'all.
- 15:10I will see y'all on the next episode.
