- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balanced Life Chiropractic. We have doctor Harley joining and s
- 0:04Speaker 1: hello doctor Harley.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hey John.
- 0:06Speaker 3: We talked last week about TMJ.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Today we're going to talk about a pelvic floor, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: you said there's maybe even a little bit of a
- 0:12Speaker 1: connection here.
- 0:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and I know that sounds kind of crazier like,
- 0:15Speaker 4: but they're completely opposite parts of my body.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Maybe, Okay, let's explain to people where they are because
- 0:19Speaker 1: I didn't know where either of these were right.
- 0:21Speaker 4: So last week talked about TMJ the jaw, so that
- 0:24Speaker 4: TMJ join is actually up underneath your ears, is where
- 0:26Speaker 4: your jaw hinge is at.
- 0:28Speaker 2: And then your pelvic floor something you might not realize.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Women. I'm sure you're a little more familiar with this
- 0:32Speaker 4: because this is really important after you have a baby,
- 0:34Speaker 4: you know, working on your pelvic floor. So it's all
- 0:37Speaker 4: the muscles down in our pelvis are hips that basically
- 0:40Speaker 4: keep our abdomen where it's at, because if we didn't
- 0:42Speaker 4: have that, you'd be falling out our pelvis.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So we're talking about stuff that's in the downstairs and
- 0:46Speaker 1: stuff that's in the upstairs.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Can you say they're connected?
- 0:48Speaker 4: They actually are connected, and it's all through fascia and
- 0:51Speaker 4: fashia is all the connective tissue in our body.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Now it might sound kind of weird. You're like, well,
- 0:56Speaker 2: that's interesting. We'll think of planner fasciities. We were talking
- 0:58Speaker 2: about this at your appointment.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I struggle with that.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, we have fashion in our hands.
- 1:02Speaker 4: It's all like the underlying connective tissue and in utero
- 1:06Speaker 4: when the baby is developing, that tongue and the jaw,
- 1:12Speaker 4: all that connective tissue and fashion are developing at the
- 1:15Speaker 4: same time as the pelvic floor. So think of our front,
- 1:18Speaker 4: you know, abdomen, All of that connective tissue in.
- 1:20Speaker 2: There is all like kind of one long connection.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Nice, So would my planter fasci itis issue that I
- 1:26Speaker 1: have that is that connected to my jaw as well.
- 1:30Speaker 2: There you can actually google this.
- 1:31Speaker 4: There are pictures showing like a dissected connective tissue, like
- 1:35Speaker 4: from the tongue all the way down to the big toe.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I thought, maybe it's because I put my foot in
- 1:38Speaker 1: my mouth so much.
- 1:40Speaker 2: You know, how do you would probably say that, yes, all.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Right, sorry, it was in my brain. I had to
- 1:45Speaker 3: shoot it out of my mouth. So that now that
- 1:47Speaker 3: I'm done with that dumb stuff.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Let's get back to the pelvic floor. Because again I've
- 1:51Speaker 1: not really heard this terminology. But I don't know if
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know this. I am not a doctor. I am
- 1:54Speaker 1: just a radio guy. So how how do I know
- 1:58Speaker 1: if I have an issue with my pelvic floor? What
- 1:59Speaker 1: are the things that I would notice in my life?
- 2:01Speaker 4: So it does tend to be more women, just as
- 2:04Speaker 4: as I said with like pregnancy. You know you have
- 2:07Speaker 4: that baby sitting on you know, pelvic floor gravity pulling
- 2:11Speaker 4: down for nine months, and then you push this watermelon
- 2:14Speaker 4: out your huha right. You know rite nice technical technical
- 2:18Speaker 4: term there, right, and you know that's going to weaken
- 2:21Speaker 4: those muscles even more. And I talked to patients now,
- 2:24Speaker 4: like the younger patients, you know, their twenties thirties, that
- 2:27Speaker 4: are having babies the first time around, they're like, oh, yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 4: I've been talking with my doctor.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I know about this.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But you know the middle aged women that had babies
- 2:33Speaker 4: twenty thirty years ago, they're like, you know, no one really.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Talked to us about post birth.
- 2:38Speaker 4: You know what we should be doing to help our
- 2:40Speaker 4: body recover or even if they were jumping you ready
- 2:43Speaker 4: to get to have another baby, you know, getting their
- 2:45Speaker 4: body ready for that next baby, because it's it's a
- 2:48Speaker 4: long haul, it's a long journey, and it's hard on
- 2:50Speaker 4: the body.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So are there things that I would be experiencing.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Maybe I don't even realize it's my pelvic floor, but
- 2:57Speaker 1: these are things that I'm experiencing that could be related
- 2:59Speaker 1: to that, right.
- 3:00Speaker 4: You tend to see you incontinence is a big one,
- 3:02Speaker 4: you know when you talk about like you peel a
- 3:04Speaker 4: little bit when you laugh, or you know, the rushing
- 3:08Speaker 4: urge need to go to the bathroom because you just
- 3:09Speaker 4: you can't hold or else you're gonna kind of dribble.
- 3:12Speaker 4: You know, men can have it, that is possible, but
- 3:14Speaker 4: it is a lot more common in women. And you
- 3:17Speaker 4: asked last week about TMJ. With age, we see a
- 3:19Speaker 4: lot more with pelvic floor and age. As you get older,
- 3:22Speaker 4: you know, we start seeing more of that incontinence or
- 3:24Speaker 4: inability to hold because those muscles are continually getting weaker
- 3:28Speaker 4: and weaker and weaker.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So if somebody does have an issue with that where
- 3:32Speaker 1: they tinkle a little bit when they laugh, that's something
- 3:34Speaker 1: that chiropractic might be able to help.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we can actually help with that. Think of you know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: one of those muscles.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Those muscles have nerve innervations, and those nerves are communicating
- 3:42Speaker 4: with your brain. So if there's a misalignment, and usually
- 3:45Speaker 4: it's kind of in the lower part of our back,
- 3:46Speaker 4: of that lumbar spine, those nerves go to all of
- 3:49Speaker 4: our digestive organs, reproductive organs, as well as the muscles
- 3:53Speaker 4: in our lower body. So making sure that that brain
- 3:56Speaker 4: connection is strong there's going to help with those muscles.
- 3:59Speaker 4: And some of it too, is those we talk about
- 4:00Speaker 4: muscles being really weak, Well it's not because they're loose.
- 4:03Speaker 4: They're actually really tight. They're very you know, they're they're
- 4:07Speaker 4: clenching too hard, and you know, like women, I was like, oh,
- 4:09Speaker 4: I gotta hold it in, squeeze it in. We do keegeles,
- 4:11Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff to restrengthen it. But the
- 4:14Speaker 4: problem is we had to figure out why they're weak
- 4:16Speaker 4: in the first place, and a lot of times it's
- 4:17Speaker 4: because they're so tight. And I heard this at a
- 4:20Speaker 4: seminar I was at a couple of weeks ago where
- 4:22Speaker 4: the speaker was talking about this TMJ pelvic floor and like,
- 4:26Speaker 4: you know, a lot of times I just tell my patients,
- 4:28Speaker 4: it's okay to relax, relax your pelvic floor, and that's
- 4:31Speaker 4: mind blowing to some people, Like, but we're always tolding
- 4:33Speaker 4: you how to like, you know, you know, clench it.
- 4:35Speaker 4: You talking about those keegels, So relaxing it can actually
- 4:40Speaker 4: help with that loosening of those muscles so they're not
- 4:42Speaker 4: quite so weak anymore.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yeah, last week was TMJ, this week is TMI.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I'm over here thinking of all this stuff where this
- 4:49Speaker 1: might be the first time we've said some of these
- 4:51Speaker 1: words on.
- 4:51Speaker 3: This program.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Talking about who has and anyway, if somebody listening, because again,
- 4:59Speaker 1: in all seriousness, this is something people deal with. And
- 5:01Speaker 1: I know I've had weird conversations because who would say
- 5:05Speaker 1: something like that to me? But I've literally had people
- 5:07Speaker 1: say because I made them laugh and They're like you
- 5:09Speaker 1: just made me pee a little bit, And I'm like, okay,
- 5:11Speaker 1: that is TMI. But if this is something you deal with, like,
- 5:14Speaker 1: there are people who may maybe they don't realize that
- 5:16Speaker 1: there's a way to fix this if they're just dealing
- 5:19Speaker 1: with it, you know, there's maybe a better way to
- 5:21Speaker 1: deal with it.
- 5:21Speaker 3: How do you do that?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Right?
- 5:22Speaker 4: There are actually you know a lot of kind of
- 5:24Speaker 4: misinformation out there, and the seminar went to really kind
- 5:26Speaker 4: of open eyes because we do talk a lot about
- 5:28Speaker 4: you know, tightening and strengthening versus it actually needs to
- 5:31Speaker 4: be relaxed. And that is part of the problem is
- 5:34Speaker 4: we hold on to tightly. We're so you know, between
- 5:36Speaker 4: the TMJ and the peloplar, like, we just need to
- 5:38Speaker 4: learn to relax more.
- 5:40Speaker 1: If somebody would like some assistance with this and you
- 5:43Speaker 1: can walk them through and without all my silly comments,
- 5:47Speaker 1: how do they connect with you?
- 5:48Speaker 3: What is the best first step?
- 5:49Speaker 4: If this is something that you're learning about, you're like,
- 5:52Speaker 4: I didn't, I didn't all this was not normal for me.
- 5:55Speaker 4: You know, we always talk about that as you know,
- 5:57Speaker 4: all those things that we talked about, this is part
- 5:59Speaker 4: of life. Chiropractic can help with you know, those issues.
